- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm just seeing if I need to plan another trip to Lubbock, because maybe we're the uh lucky charms.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: We're the reason.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: We're the reason we won.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: At this moment, we are on this podcast speaking and we are winners.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: We have defeated the Baylor Bears in an utterly dominant performance.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Did you say we won?
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Did we we won?
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: We we so oh so do we have to play we have to play something, don't we?
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: We it's time to play the song.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: We gotta play the song.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Play the song.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Play the song, baby.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech has defeated Baylor 24 to 23 in Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: We move to three and five on the air and two and five in conference.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Uh ignore that part, but we beat the Bears, and that's all that really matters, right?
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: I'm just wondering why we're not ranked.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, I just I'm trying, I need I need to add the AP poll rank us, you cowards, because it's about time they they gave us the respect we deserve after an utterly the dominant performance.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the the problem is they don't rank many three and five teams.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: It's a it's a shame, but uh yeah, it it's tough out there.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Hey, hey, I I just want to kick this off with some good good vibes besides us just winning.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Now there's basically no possible way we can finish last in the Big 12.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: No, that's technically not true because you said basically it's not true because we could lose to Kansas and they could beat UT this week, and then we could be tied for last.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: So almost.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: I'm just trying to keep the the the happiness going, and all I know is Matt Wells is undefeated against Oklahoma State.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna go ahead and write that in as a W.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: I don't know about you.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: It's it's a W in my book, so there's no need to even preview it, but we won't preview it until next week because tech does have a bye this weekend.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, just enjoy your weekend of techless football, where we definitely won't lose.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So, but Tristan, why don't we get into our game day experience since we were there?
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: We were in Lubbock this weekend, we had a great time.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: We had uh we were joined by a couple of our friends, Logan and Clay, uh, and we just had a ball, man.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: It was it was like being back in college again.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, we realize how old we are trying to go hard two days in a row now, and uh the drive back was brutal.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: I'm still feeling the aftermath.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: I I hope the treasure listeners can't hear how much my voice is still gone.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Like my girl, my girlfriend has been calling me a smoker for these past two days just because I've I completely lost my voice screaming and hooting and hollering, whether it was in the Jones or in the bars.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: So uh my I don't know if our bodies can take these uh extended soda-induced weekends anymore.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: No, we had way too many sodas.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Um Texas Teas does have soda in it, has a little bit of coke in it.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: So uh those ruined my life this weekend, but I'm getting there.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: I'm getting a little better.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: It is Tuesday.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: We're we decided to record on Tuesday this week, uh, just so we could give us an extra day of recovery.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Um, but let's talk about the the game day experience at the Jones uh itself.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: It was it was weird, uh probably for me.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: No, super weird.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: I've never seen the Jones that empty in all of my times of being there.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, what was even I feel like what were the weirdest part was not even just sitting in the stands, it was like going down to the concession areas, you know, under the bleachers.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: It was weird how empty it was down there because you know, that's usually wall to wall, you can barely walk, you know, where you're trying, you know, trying to go down and get your hot dog and soda.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: Um, but there was just no one there.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was kind of nice that there was no lines, but uh at the same time, it's it was kind of spooky to be in this enormous structure that's usually packed, but no one's in there.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was a little eerie at first.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, you kind of walk in and you're just like, oh my god, this is just sad.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And the pumped in crowd noise, it's weird.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: I think it's not like the more I think about it, the more I think it's necessary.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, it kind of gets, I don't know, a false, a false sense of everyone getting hyped up.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: But there were moments, I mean, like the schooler to Eccle, there was like a big ooh, like in the stadium, which was cool.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: I I I just thought like it was more of kind of a high school game feel, uh, to it.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it just and and not like big time high school Texas football or whatever that we experience, but like probably like a mid, you know, 3A school game where there's you know just cheers and woo, you know.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: But um I'm I'm really happy that uh the the band was there.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: I feel like if the band wasn't there, then it would have been extra layers of weird.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: But see, I have like a weird thing because they didn't perform at halftime, they neither did the cheer squad, they never performed, but they pre-recorded a performance and put it up on the jumbotron.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Well, I I don't understand how you can still have the performance, but you don't do it in the stadium.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: I I I don't get the I don't get the restriction there.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: What's what's the difference between doing it pre-recorded and then doing it actually in the stadium?
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: I think it's to keep any other outsiders away from the football team.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: I think that's what it is.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Like just eliminate any chance of like outside influences bringing COVID onto the field.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: I think that's probably the guy.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: But they're off the field at halftime.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Like, I guess uh I guess some are practicing.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: I think that's just weird that they would go and record it and have the performance, which was not really restrictive in any capacity, but I don't know.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: I don't know, just a thought.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: It was all in all, it was really weird.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're probably some of the loudest people there.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're just normally loud because I mean everyone else is just you know sitting there quietly watching the game, you know, while we're out up there just hooting and hollering the entire time, you know, pulling our hair out, going terrible, yeah.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Come on, come on.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Almost game.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Alan Bowman, you threw a pick six on your first pass.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, the the Alan Bo the Alan Bowman timeline is probably the the craziest of the night.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Um, him and uh our kicker.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: Um but uh that's it's it was a weird game.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: I was pulling my hair out the entire time, as I'm sure you were too.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Um but um I I'm really proud that these guys had no quitting in them, and and they just we scored every quarter.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, we we we had a scoring drive each quarter, um, while the Baylor Bears didn't, and that's what proved to be the winning in the end.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: So um a very strange game, and we'll always take a dub.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: I'm glad to get one over a rival like Baylor.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's it's where do we even begin talking about the game itself?
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Well, you got to start with Jonathan Garabay, the uh extremely good field goal kicker, apparently.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, four for four on the day.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, and he actually punted as well for the team.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, we had some COVID issues and and some uh I guess contact tracing issues where starting punter Austin McNamara couldn't play.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Trey Wolf wasn't suited up either.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: So Garabay pretty much had to do everything.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: And uh he came in and and four for four on the day on field goals.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, he hit like a 48 yarder, he hit a 41 yarder, and then the two the two in the 20s, and the game winner at the at the end of the game, the last play.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Uh Buzzer Peter, yeah, buzzer beater.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable debut for a kicker and for Mr.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Garabay.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Um, just awesome.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: I guess we have a field goal kicker now.
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, clearly the starter going forward.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: He scored half the total points for us.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: He scored 12 points out of our 24.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: And uh, I don't know if you ever expect to win games, whatever the your your special teams kicker is having to get half of them, but I'm just I'm just happy for the consistency.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: You know, that was he he nailed everyone he ended it with 100, and uh especially whenever he got whenever it came down to when it was most important because had he missed that, it would have been a no, like right then and there.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: So yeah, incredible showing.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: This kid is obviously very talented.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Not sure how he hasn't started out a program before this.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: Um, but I'm glad that this we we can feel comfortable about moving forward uh with him for at least another three years if he wants to.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, no doubt.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: I'm just happy that we got some consistency, like you said, uh getting going four for four.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, we quadrupled our field goal output for the year in one game, uh, which is crazy to think about and really tells you how bad our special teams has been this year.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think this kind of leads into uh the controversial play at the end of the game.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Uh we go down the field and and Bowman, by the way, Bowman's second half was awesome.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: He was great though pretty much the entire second half.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: He came in, kind of redeemed himself after throwing that pick six at the beginning.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: But um, so Roderick Thompson has a has a lane.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, he makes a move and has a wide open touchdown, and he decides to slide at the end of the game.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Um it was very 50-50 from what I saw on Twitter of tech fans getting extremely upset with him and extremely proud that we did that because and I'm I'm more on the proud side.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: I think I think that was a good play by him uh going going down and get not giving Baylor any opportunity.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: And I think it starts the argument for it starts with the previous games that we've seen this season where that kind of stuff has gone wrong, like the UT game.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: If Sir Rodrigue Thompson does not score that 75-yard touchdown at the end of the game, and we just you know run down the clock, we we win the game.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: And there's also other examples like Todd Gurley with the Falcons this year, when he should have gone down in the end zone, and then the Lions ended up coming back and winning the game, and then the Penn State game against Indiana.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: If that guy doesn't score, then Penn State pulls it out.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: So uh I I and the other argument is that Jonathan Garabay was three of three already on field goals.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: It was a 25-yard field goal, it was a chip shot.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, and he nailed it.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: So I it was a smart move, and and I'm not gonna get mad at Wells for you know it he probably had some influence in that.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: They probably practiced that sort of deal.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: And uh, I think I think it was a good play by Sir Roderick.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely, man.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: And it probably takes a lot of uh discipline in a player to not get those points, you know, to not feel the glory and get those stats.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: So I'm I'm really happy that he he had the discipline to go down when he did.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: I think it was the right call.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: We won, you know.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: Obviously, this was a design play, and I really like the fact that we didn't want to give the ball back to Baylor.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: Um, because it's just like you were saying before, this is we have probably the biggest issue in the Texas Tech football program, even going back to Cliff, is our inability to close out games.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: We always lose the close games every time, but not this time.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: And I think going down on the slide with Sir Roderick Thompson uh was the reason why that didn't have to happen.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying Baylor could turn it around and scores, but because they didn't score at all in the fourth quarter, huge kudos to the defense.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: But why even give them the chance when you can lock it down and just and grab your first win at home in a while?
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: I agree fully.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Um, I think it would have given them about what 50 seconds or something for them to go down and score.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: And I to be honest with you, I know our defense played awesome the whole game, but I wouldn't have been surprised if Baylor went down and scored and won the game.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: We always blow the we blow the close games, yeah.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: We blow it.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm I'm glad it worked out.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Everybody should just be happy that we won.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: I'm not mad at Matt Wells this week.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Um, there was some questionable play calling, but that kind of goes to Yoast and and and that kind of stuff.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: But um we we can talk, I think we should talk about the quarterbacks because uh we came into the game saying we were gonna play both of them, uh, which is a weird strategy, but uh Columbia started off shaky and then Bowman came in for a series and threw a pick six right away, and we were like, okay, so this is just gonna be the worst thing ever.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: This is just gonna be the this is how this game is gonna go.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: We're gonna just get blown out by a terrible Baylor team.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: But we were resilient.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: Uh tech or Baylor did go up 20 to 6 at one point, and then I think the the game kind of changed on a few different plays that you can look at.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: Um Columbia went out with a supposed elbow injury, I guess, in the second half, and Bowman kind of just wrote it from there.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure Columbia could have gone back in the game, but I'm I'm sure Wells just wanted to stick with the guy that was rolling.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: So uh but uh to be honest with you, Bowman played well that that second half, he really did, and he and he kind of redeemed himself for sure.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: And it's kind of funny.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: You and I were, you know, obviously when we're driving, we have a seven-hour drive to Lubik total, you know, we're gonna talk about a lot of tech football.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: So I'm I remember you and I talking about the the quarterback situation and um how you know Alan Bowman's probably the most talented guy on the team, he just isn't there mentally to win anymore.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: That's why we're playing Henry Columbi, who's probably a lesser talented quarterback.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: But did that turn around this game?
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: You know, did are we looking at Alan Bowman probably finishing the season as the starter and maybe even like the permanent starter, you know, like the he stays in the whole games, um, unless he starts blowing it.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: Um, and looking at next year, Alan Bowman coming back to tech and Baron Morton falling in behind him.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: And do you think we're looking at that quarter pack room now?
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Like, what do you think this says about the rest of the season and going forward?
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I don't, I don't think first off, when you're talking about Barron Morton, he's not gonna start for two years, uh, because he's a true freshman coming in next season.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: I know he's a four-star guy and he's highly touted, but I just don't see a four-star uh a freshman, true freshman quarterback starting for tech next year.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Um and and we'll see, we'll see how the next two games go.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: I think that's gonna tell a lot for Bowman.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: If he has if he goes and has a good game against Oklahoma State, uh, you know, get limits his mistakes and uh, you know, goes and takes care of business against Kansas.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: I think you I think you ride with Bowman.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: I uh Columbia hasn't shown me anything since that West Virginia game.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Uh and he just he's just not talented enough.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Like you said earlier, Bowman is far and away the more talented quarterback.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: It's just the fact of him putting it together mentally.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: And this kind of game where you come back from a 20 to 6 deficit, you're kind of in and out of the game.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: I think it shows a lot of mental capacity and and mental uh prowess for him.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Uh so I think you ride with Bowman going forward.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I don't think you if he has a terrible game against Oklahoma State, you don't put in Columbia again.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: But and maybe you maybe you work with McGyver.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: McGyver was not in he was not dressed for this game.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure why.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Uh whether he was hurt or whether he was on the COVID list or something, but um uh he wasn't available.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: So we just had to ride with these two and and we pulled it out.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I think you go with Bowman.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: I think uh I think uh Columbi's like the kind of backup quarterback you want, you know, he's serviceable.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: Um, kind of a statement you and I were talking about, you know, whenever we're recapping the game on the drive home.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: Um we don't think that Columbia is a guy that can come from behind.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Alan Bowman just proved this last game that he can.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's a talent thing.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: So uh Columbia's good at maintaining a win like he did against West Virginia.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: Um, but I don't know if he has it in him to play from behind.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: I just don't know if he has the kind of firepower to spark us back up into a game.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, every every game, I should say, you know, every Saturday.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Well, Alan Bowman probably does.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: It's just we keep coming back to I we think the injuries rattled his brain, and maybe this game against Baylor is a good way for him to get back into his shoes and play like he does.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree with you fully.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: Um, I I I would have liked to see McIver, uh, especially in a game like this where both quarterbacks started off really horrible.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: Um, just to just to throw him in there to see, but he wasn't dressed, so that kind of stinks.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, I wonder what's gonna happen with him.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: I I wonder if he's gonna transfer.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: I wonder, I wonder what that whole quarterback situation is going into next season.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: But uh, yeah, Bowman's the guy going forward.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: But one thing that did help Bowman out is that we finally have a fully healthy receiving and running back core around him throughout the year.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: We've been missing Vasher for a few games, uh Keyshawn Carter for a few games, Dalton Rigdon just came back.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Uh Sir Rodrick, you know, has been in and out of injuries and uh this kind of stuff, but we finally have all of our guys back, and it just gives this team a much higher ceiling when you have all of your really good players back.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Um, and they and they showed out today.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, the receivers were great, uh Sir Roderick was great.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Taj Brooks ran in two touchdowns.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: So uh I think all around, you know, could have been better offensive game, especially in that first half.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: But second half, we looked we looked pretty good out there.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Tired of these slow first halves, you know, they they've really been holding us back, it feels like.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: Um, but I I I I appreciate the coaching staffs trying to, you know, make the adjustments in the second half.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: And this team had no quitting them.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: You know, yeah, it looks like they could have just gave up, especially after that Bowman pick.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: You know, that kind of felt like air was being sucked out of us.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: Um, but we turned it around, you know, and I think the special teams play has a lot to do with that, keeping us in the game, you know, with the reliable points.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and for once we don't have to be livid with the special teams, yeah, you know, so uh great showing from uh from from the O and the special teams.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, you can't complain when you get a get a win, especially with the state our team is in.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: There's really no way you can just be unhappy with it.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Sure, it could have been better.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: But right now, we're just trying to get our wins no matter how we can, whether they're ugly or perfect.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just want us to be competitive, no more blowouts.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: That's it's it's so disappointing when we get blowouts.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: But let's talk about tech defense because tech defense, they were the real star of this game.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Uh honestly, Colin Schooler and Rico Jeffers, uh unbelievable games.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Also, my boy Zach McPherson.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Is he good, Steven?
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: I this week he's good.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Maybe next week he's not.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: I don't want to admit it.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: I know he's good.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: He's he makes he makes the good plays, but overall, throughout the entirety of the game, he makes mistakes, and that's what brings me back down.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: He doesn't he doesn't play a full game, but I'm not I'm not gonna crap on McPherson today.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: He had a great game, he made two crucial plays, one being the interception and one being being the bat down at the very end of the game to give us that last chance to drive down the field and win the game.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: So uh big huge game from Zach McPherson.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, he showed that that he's good this week.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, but Colin Schooler and Rico Jeffers, awesome games.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, 11 tackles, 11 tackles for Schooler, seven for Rico, both got a sack on on Charlie Brewer.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: And then Schooler made what was probably the play of the year.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: If not, you know, the only contender would be Zach McPherson getting the fumble recovery for the touchdown against West Virginia.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: But this hit on Charlie Brewer at the goal line that held Baylor to a field goal was awesome, dude.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, the the boom you heard, and you you heard it in that stadium because it's so empty.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: You freaking heard him just slamming Charlie Brewer to the ground.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: It was awesome.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Charlie Brewer woke up, he did not see that man coming, and like a freight train, he sent that man back.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: No touchdown for you.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: Um, but that that is, I think that was the biggest game, biggest play of our whole season.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: I think that was the most crucial moment in all in this in this football season.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: And like you said, you could absolutely feel the force of it when it happened, and it went viral.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: You know, even Barstell was talking about it, ESPN was talking about it, everyone was talking about it, and you love seeing that.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: You love to see our defense get the credit, it has deserved this whole year.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: You know, they've they've fought their ass off, they really have this whole year, and they've kept teams to you know 30 points a game.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: And Baylor really they only scored 16 points on this defense, and that's an that's an awesome score, you know, for to give your offense a chance to win the game.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: But uh, I think the great the great thing about that play is Schooler's not that big, he's not a big guy by any means.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: He's strong, he's like he's sturdy, but he's not tall and he's not you know real big, and he's hidden behind this tight end the whole time.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: And Brewer doesn't really see him when he's coming around the tight end, and Schooler just shoves this massive tight end out of the way.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Then Charlie Brewer's the big guy.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, Charlie Brewer's like 6'5, I think.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: And he's not, I mean, he's not skinny.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: So I just a perfect form tackle, uh, made uh you know highlight reels.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: It was unbelievable.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but everybody everybody just had a solid game all around.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, Merry Weather had a great game, the the uh secondary had a great game.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: We we got to Charlie Brewer a few times, so um, and and not with the healthy, not with a fully healthy team either.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, solid solid performance from the defense.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: Hey, even even Eric Monroe had a had a pretty decent game too.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: You know, he he's he he pulled some of the stuff that makes you very upset.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: I know there's nothing that upsets you more about a tech football team is watching watching players miss tackles, but you know, yeah, he he had he had a serviceable game.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: He's just missed, he's had at least two or three plays this year where he's just completely run past the quarterback.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, Eric Monroe, what are you doing?
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: But yeah, he did.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: He had a good game.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: He had I think well, like you said, 10, 10, 11 tackles, and uh yeah, a solid outing for him.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: Um but I what does this mean going forward with tech?
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Does that you know Bowman's the starter, right?
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: And then you know, just more confidence in the field goal unit, I think, will only help us, only do us better.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: Uh defense just keep doing their thing, honestly.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, Oklahoma State's gonna be a much tougher matchup than Baylor, but uh you know, I think I I have confidence in this defense and in this linebacking core, and uh we're actually getting to the quarterback now.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: So, and we finally have everybody or most most everybody healthy on the offense.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, I think I think it's a good yeah, I think it's good going forward for tech for sure.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: And uh we're we'll be coming off a bye week coming up on this next game, and we seem to perform pretty well off of bye weeks, so and now hopefully that's that's a moment for our whole team to get healthy and back on the field because I mean we're gonna need everybody to pull out this win against the Pokes.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: I would love to get three in a row on them, that'll be amazing.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: So, um, man, I again there's there's there's just no room.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, of course, it was not a perfect game by any means.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: Like I said, I was pulling my hair out the entire game, but we got a buzzer beater win, and I am never gonna complain about grabbing a W this season, and especially against a rival like Baylor.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: Um, and we even the series, by the way, the overall series is back to uh even.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: So talk about what the one of the most even rivalries of all time.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Um, glad to get that going again.
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: And defense was a star, punting and uh kicking his back, baby.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Um, I wish we can go back to our first episode or we or uh our preview episode and say um that it's not Trey Wolf, it is most certainly Garabay.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Jonathan Garabay is gonna be the star of the team.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: We we said that earlier in the year.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: We just you know, we we thought it the whole time.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: And I'm with 23 personnel, wonderful tech podcast.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: If y'all haven't checked them out yet, um I like all day Garabay.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: I think that's my favorite nickname for him.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's good.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Uh I liked Garaboom.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: That that was fun.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: That was but they know I mean, you know, solid, solid, solid dude, solid dude, good field goal kicker.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Um, and like I said, we're gonna preview the OK State game next week.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Um, for all of y'all, they do play Oklahoma this week, so I think we'll find out a lot about this team and how good they actually are um against a rolling Oklahoma team.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: But uh, I did have a couple shouts out to end the podcast.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Um Jamayus Ramsey going in.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: We're recording this on Tuesday.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Tomorrow is the NBA draft.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, we'll see where Jamias Ramsey goes.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Um, it's kind of up in the air where uh uh it just depends on what mock draft you look at.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: He's all over the place.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's like mid-first round to like mid-second round.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: So I I think I I feel like a lot of teams like him.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: He's a really versatile player.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Uh he's he's the body's there.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's a strong dude already at be at you know for being a one and done.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: And I think a lot of a lot of teams like him.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Um, I my prediction would probably be Utah at 23.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: If not, I know Denver at 22 is looking at him.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: So uh, and he he could even go to the Mavs, and that would be cool for him to stay in Texas and and you know, go I think he's from the Dallas area, so that would be cool for him to go to the Mavs, even though uh I am a Spurs fan and uh you know I don't want him to do good for the Mavs.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, shout out to him.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: Hopefully he finds a good spot and a good location.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: Don't go to the Knicks, please, or the or another terrible franchise like the Cavs.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Uh but yeah, Jamayas Ramsey.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: Let's see if your predictions are right.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll see.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, I like I said, I've seen him going 39th to someplace or going 18th to someplace, it's just all over the place.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: I hope it's first round.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: You know, I would love to have uh another first round pick out of tech for sure.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: And and I think I I in terms of talking about the other two guys who in recent years have gone to the NBA draft, I think Jamayas Ramsey might have the highest upside.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: He's more of an NBA player than the other two.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: I love Jared Culver, and I think he's got a lot of opportunity to grow as a player and be a good solid NBA player.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: He didn't have quite the rookie season he wanted to, but uh and Zaire Smith, man, he's just been a disappointment because of the injuries and the whole allergy thing that started off.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: He left too early.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: He did leave too early, but you can't.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, when you get when you get first round buzz like that, you probably have to go.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: You take it, you go get paid, buddy.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and unfortunately, it has not worked out for him.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: Uh on Philly.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, he gets traded out of there and finds some way to get back.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: But uh Jamais Ramsey's a better shooter and I think than Jarek Culver and Zaire Smith.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: So I think that's what's gonna put him over the top and get him some some big minutes in the NBA.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: Loving the basketball talk because we are this close.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: We are we're to the transition.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: This close the 25th.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: So, what is that?
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: Next Wednesday is gonna be the first game, gonna be on uh yes sir, ESPN Plus, it looks like against Northwestern State at 6 p.m.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: on November 25th.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: So make sure to uh get that five dollar subscription for the month so you can watch your Red Raiders, and even you might just want to get it for all basketball season.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: I know ESPN Plus utilizes Big 12 basketball, and so there's usually a game of the week, you know, that's on ESPN Plus, even when we get into conference play.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: So uh you may just want to you know splurge a little bit and get the five bucks so you can watch uh tech play basketball because we're gonna be really good, like we've said.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: So I I think my second shout out right here would be uh to Cliff, Cliff Kingsbury, who pulled out a great win against the uh uh who do they put?
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, the Bills, the Bills.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: Great win against the Bills.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Uh awesome moment for DeAndre Hopkins and Kyler Murray catching uh that Hail Mary pass to end the game.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: Uh I I feel good for Cliff every time he gets a win like this.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: I hate the talk when you know everybody when every time Cliff does good, every time a tech fan goes, Oh, we shouldn't have fired him.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: We still should have fired him.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be a great, he's gonna be a great NFL coach, he's gonna be a great coach.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: Whatever I I see, I see the LOL tech should have fired him way more so from other fans, I feel like the other Big 12 fans.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: That's true because they didn't watch it, they didn't watch when Cliff was here.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: They just see oh Mahomes was there, so why'd they fire this guy?
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: The NFL and the NCAA are two completely different beasts, and you you just you really have no grasps on what's going on if you can't differentiate the two.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: I I mean he's he's got his team put together by a GM, his recruiting was his downfall here, so he gets one of the best talent to come out of college sports, and and also what may be the NFL MVP this year in Kyler Murray, and he is a quarterback whisperer, like we said, a lot of that has to do with Cliff, probably, but uh they're fun to watch, really.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: The car and and I got Kyler Murray on my fantasy team.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: I just wrecked your I just wrecked your team this week.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: Uh it's a rebuilding year, it's a rebuilding year for Tristan's fantasy team.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: Uh he took Kenyon Drake in the first round, and it was just down the hill from there.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Are you trying to get us to lose listeners?
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: You're gonna make me think I don't know anything, which I don't, but which I do not.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: I just like tech a lot.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: You just like tech, whatever.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: So what I beat you.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: Um, but but uh third shout out to uh the Houston Rockets for completely blowing up their team and ruining what was a contender uh game.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: You're trying to get us to lose our listeners.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: I'm I don't care.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: I love our treasured listeners, maybe from Houston or Dallas, and here you are.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Hey, I give shouts out to the Dallas fans.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: I just really dislike Houston sports.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: I do, I hate them, it's not good.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: The Rockets are ruined, and I love it.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: Well, their organizations hate them too.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: So that's true.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: They they they crap on them just as much as we do.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: So uh shout out to the Rockets for blowing it.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and then last shout out for me.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: Shout out, Kansas.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Beat Texas this week.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Re revive the meme, please.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Don't let us be the last conference team you have beaten.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: That makes me sad.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: That makes us sad.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: We need this, Kansas.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: We need this.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Beat Texas, uh, because it would be so funny.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: Our boy Kyle.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's say add Kyle because he had a great tweet, and he's a Texas fan, so this was kind of wild.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: But last time Kansas beat Texas, the the famous meme game.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: Uh it was November, it was an election year.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Alabama was ranked first, the game was at Kansas, Sam Ellinger was a senior in high school.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: The Longhorns had five wins, and the Jayhawks were winless in conference play.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: So there's so many similarities to that year, and I want it to happen again.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Part two, please.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: That would be so funny.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Another, another funny development is how AM's like never gonna play a game again.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they just decided not funny in like uh the the COVID way, but funny in the they might have a good team and they just like they might not even be able to like play for anything at this point.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Can't blow it in November if you don't play in November, exactly.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: Big big time for AM.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: No, hopefully they get hopefully they get yeah, whatever.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: But no, no, no malice towards that part.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, once they get healthy, I hope they lose.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Same.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: So uh well, let's end it.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Let's do our song of the week.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Tristan, what's yours?
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: So I was in a rock and roll mood because we were pretty much doing the rock and roll lifestyle that was nothing but boozing and screaming this last weekend.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: Um, a famous Texas country band, Whiskey Myers.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go with Rolling Stone off their new album, Whiskey Myers.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Just an absolute jam, a sing along, I can never skip it.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: And I'm just always rocking and rolling in my car whenever it's on.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: I'm always just yelling with him.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: So give that a listen.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: I know it'll put you all in a better mood.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: And I hope we keep on rolling into uh Stillwater because I'm ready for another win.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Please, that's great.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: That good, good song of the week.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Um, uh we did all we did do a lot of yelling this week.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Uh my voice is still not recovered.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: We we were extremely hyped, and then when you're at the bars, you have to scream the entire time because there's a lot of people.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, that good song of the week, man.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: Um, my song of the week is gonna be something we listened to on the way up there.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: Uh it's uh End of the Line by the Traveling Wilburys.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Um, a band that I I don't think is it should be more famous, I think.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: They only did like an album or two together because it's just a group of famous musicians that are all yeah, it's just a super group that that formed.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: And I'm surprised I never heard of them before I before my dad started playing the song a few months ago.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: And uh it's it's it's a band made up of Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison from the Beatles, uh Jeff Lynn and Roy Orbison, and uh just a big time group there.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: Uh you got some you got some British flavor, you got some Texas flavor in there, and it's it's just a good folky vibe to it.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Um the song End of the Line is it's fun, man.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's just it's just a good jam.
- 34:34SPEAKER_03: Well, it's all right.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: Riding around in the freeze, well, it's alright.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: If you live the life you please, well, it's alright.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: Doing the best you can, well, it's all right.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: As long as you land at hand.
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: Good one.
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, you're just you're just you're kind of going on the roll just naming musical legends right now.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, some would say it's a cop out, but uh-uh.
- 35:05SPEAKER_02: That's not a cop out.
- 35:06SPEAKER_02: It's good.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: I don't choose, I don't, I'm not choosing like Hotel California by the Eagles or something like that.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm not gonna.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: That would be a cop-out.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that would be a cop-out.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: I'm usually doing underrated songs by famous people.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: So I like famous bands.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Sorry, so do a lot of people.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: Good no, good choice, man.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: They can't go wrong with those legends.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: So um I just said nice and easy episode for us because as we are in recovery still, yeah.
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: Steven, let's close this out.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can follow both of us on Twitter.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez, Tristan is at Tristy Mick.

- 36:05SPEAKER_01: Uh wow.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just want to congratulate Steven and Tristan on another great podcast.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: They were everything we thought they would be.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Um, we have a lot of respect for their program.

- 36:25SPEAKER_00: I want to congratulate them.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: I just want to tell Stephen and Tristan thanks for coming out.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: You know, we fed off of it.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Uh great job.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
