- 0:04- Hello, and welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:07I'm Olivia, here we are.
- 0:09- Shauna.
- 0:09- And as you can tell, we are back in the studio together.
- 0:12It's always a beautiful day.
- 0:14Get to see your face.
- 0:15- Your hair looks pretty.
- 0:16- Thank you.
- 0:17You're just two.
- 0:18We're actually growing long.
- 0:20We're capable of life still.
- 0:22- I know.
- 0:23- This is proof that we are still living sentient beings.
- 0:27- Yes.
- 0:28- You know, aging can't get us.
- 0:29- I got sick of my green street.
- 0:32- Okay.
- 0:33- Yeah, tell us the thought process.
- 0:34- What was going on?
- 0:35- It was just too hard to keep up with.
- 0:37And I bought like a bottle of manic panic,
- 0:39like the little temporary hair dye stuff.
- 0:41- Yeah.
- 0:42- And I made it greener, and then it washed out with it.
- 0:46A week.
- 0:47So.
- 0:48- Not to, you know, tell everyone,
- 0:50but you probably already did.
- 0:52- Oh my God.
- 0:52- And do you think it's because it's like the gray hair streak
- 0:55where it's like retaining color less?
- 0:57- How dare you out me for having an agent body?
- 1:00- Okay.
- 1:01- It's pertinent.
- 1:02- Wim's are allowed to age.
- 1:03- You are, you are.
- 1:04But like, isn't that a thing?
- 1:05- You know what, maybe.
- 1:06I think also, I was taking, okay.
- 1:08I dyed my hair green right here,
- 1:11because it had a gray streak growing
- 1:13as you just,
- 1:14- You're ugly.
- 1:15- You're ugly.
- 1:16- I don't care.
- 1:17I have a lot of grays.
- 1:18- Well, you sit in a patch.
- 1:19- You know, it was edgy.
- 1:20- Gray hairs are sick.
- 1:21And I love it.
- 1:22And I want to have a full,
- 1:23ripe head of gray hair someday.
- 1:26- It feels right.
- 1:28- It feels right to be ripe.
- 1:30I don't know, maybe that's why I didn't hold on.
- 1:32- I found the cold showers and it's still.
- 1:34- Okay.
- 1:35- I got sick of cold showers.
- 1:36You can only do so much.
- 1:37- Yeah.
- 1:38- Yeah.
- 1:39- You know.
- 1:40- You might need to take more in the morning now
- 1:41for your filthy dreams.
- 1:43(laughing)
- 1:44- I do.
- 1:45I have my filthy,
- 1:46my filthy sex dreams that I wake up
- 1:48and take a cold shower.
- 1:49- Yeah, there you go.
- 1:50- A 12 year old boy.
- 1:51- No, you look adorable.
- 1:52And I know you cut your bangs yourself,
- 1:54but at least I am.
- 1:54We are doing amazing.
- 1:57We cut our own bangs.
- 1:58Ask no follow up questions.
- 1:59- No, listen.
- 2:01The fact that you did a good job
- 2:02cutting your own bangs means that you were doing
- 2:04perfect light.
- 2:05- I'm only slightly manic.
- 2:06- I'm only slightly manic.
- 2:07- She's slightly manic.
- 2:08- There's manic and there's panic.
- 2:09(laughing)
- 2:11- I'm glad you didn't do straight across
- 2:12shot of bangs.
- 2:13If you did that,
- 2:14- I just show up single white femaleing you.
- 2:16(laughing)
- 2:19- How you do a girl?
- 2:20I would have had to fly to San Francisco
- 2:22like and see if you were doing okay.
- 2:24If you went like blunt bang by yourself.
- 2:26- No, baby bangs are for you.
- 2:28- I can't do them.
- 2:29I'm not gonna separate a carpenter track.
- 2:32Like curtain bang.
- 2:34- Oh, the curtain bang.
- 2:35- Yeah.
- 2:36- Yeah.
- 2:37- Got it, got it, got it, got it.
- 2:37- Yeah, until something worse happens.
- 2:39And I've never known.
- 2:40- Nothing worse is gonna happen to you.
- 2:41- If you're here.
- 2:43(laughing)
- 2:43- If I show up with baby bangs,
- 2:45maybe 51/50 me.
- 2:47- I am gonna convince Olivia to come
- 2:49to Phoenix for Halloween
- 2:50so that we can do a costume together.
- 2:54- Yeah, yeah.
- 2:54- So let us know your thoughts.
- 2:56- Yeah. - And all right.
- 2:56- What, we should be.
- 2:57- I think there's gonna be four of us this year
- 2:59if we do a group costume.
- 3:01- I said track, but we've already done that.
- 3:02- We've done track.
- 3:03- Yeah.
- 3:05- I still have my track costume.
- 3:06- Yeah.
- 3:07- I was dragon.
- 3:09- I was Lord Farquad.
- 3:10- It was really good.
- 3:11(laughing)
- 3:12- Slutty Lord Farquad.
- 3:13- We had a friend who was donkey
- 3:16and she committed so hard to the--
- 3:18- She wore the mask a whole time.
- 3:19- She put them in just like tits out too.
- 3:22- It was great.
- 3:23- Yeah.
- 3:23- Everything else was like kind of--
- 3:24- She got hit on a lot.
- 3:25- She did.
- 3:26And she did not take off that latex donkey mask.
- 3:29We went to the Shrek Club night
- 3:31and then we went to another bar.
- 3:32- A bar.
- 3:33- A bar which is hot in there.
- 3:34- Dancing with the latex donkey mask on.
- 3:38- She would only take it off to drink
- 3:39but she would be very sneaky about it
- 3:41so no one could see who was really under the mask.
- 3:43- That's like when I had my bald cap
- 3:44and I got hit on more that night than the night before
- 3:47when I was like fully in a undercourse with like my boobs out,
- 3:51but and then I was like, she's got a bald cap on.
- 3:54Let's go for that one.
- 3:56- That bald cap outfit was so good.
- 3:58- I still have it.
- 3:59- I'm so mad that I showed up late that night
- 4:01'cause I was slutty flow.
- 4:03I was flow from progressive
- 4:05but only with the apron on.
- 4:06- Yeah.
- 4:07- And nothing happened to me.
- 4:09- You know, we were having a time.
- 4:10- You know, we were having a time.
- 4:11- That was a time.
- 4:12- Okay.
- 4:13- So let us know what you think we should be for Halloween.
- 4:16We're taking ideas clearly.
- 4:17- Yeah, we are.
- 4:18We want group costumes.
- 4:19Maybe make it pop culture themed.
- 4:21There needs to be four of us.
- 4:22- Yeah.
- 4:23- We can happen.
- 4:24- Yeah, isn't that every Halloween costume though?
- 4:25- What's the pop culture themed?
- 4:28- Yeah, I guess.
- 4:29- Yeah.
- 4:29- Yeah.
- 4:30- Well, it's like fun.
- 4:31- Oh, speaking of the time.
- 4:32- At a while, I'm stupid.
- 4:33- Unless it's a pop culture clown.
- 4:34- Did you see what target released in there?
- 4:36- Literally.
- 4:38- Wow.
- 4:39- While we were just hanging out,
- 4:40like before we started recording,
- 4:42you went to the bathroom.
- 4:42- You know, you went outside.
- 4:43- No, you went to the bathroom.
- 4:44- I went to the bathroom
- 4:45and I did some unholy things in the bathroom.
- 4:48And actually, you know, I did.
- 4:49I read it while I was taking the browns to the Super Bowl
- 4:52at the Hula's Modern Tiki.
- 4:53And it'd be an exterior zone.
- 4:55- A.
- 4:55(laughing)
- 4:58- But yes, I saw that they released like a...
- 5:01- So to update you, today they released their children's line
- 5:06of Halloween costumes.
- 5:08There was a clown.
- 5:11And if you're audio listening only,
- 5:13you'll see the area quotes around clown.
- 5:16- It is very much like a black face clown.
- 5:20- Like a menstrual.
- 5:21- A menstrual clown.
- 5:22- Yes.
- 5:23And they even have a black boy model.
- 5:28- And they have him posing in the same way
- 5:31and menstrual clown would.
- 5:33- And it's got the big red lips and like the smile.
- 5:35Who passes these things?
- 5:38Do you not have a single?
- 5:39- That went through so much for you.
- 5:40- Person of color is single black person,
- 5:42like working at Target.
- 5:44- No.
- 5:45- Maybe not in corporate.
- 5:46- I'm not that unfortunate.
- 5:47- Yeah.
- 5:48- No, actually insane.
- 5:49- What?
- 5:50They're doing so?
- 5:52- Yeah.
- 5:53The only reason I saw that is 'cause I followed Target
- 5:54on Instagram for some God for a Saken reason.
- 5:57- Okay.
- 5:58- Or like,
- 5:58- 'Cause they're not not like.
- 5:59- I know, I really tend to follow them.
- 6:00But it was like, we are so sorry.
- 6:02We dropped the ball like an apology thing.
- 6:05- Oh.
- 6:06- And so I like Doug was like,
- 6:07"What did they do?"
- 6:09- Yeah.
- 6:09- Yeah, so, Target downhill.
- 6:12Also, that was a joke.
- 6:14John is an ally.
- 6:15- I need to apologize.
- 6:17- The most politically inclined of the two of us.
- 6:20- And I was thinking we had to argue with you
- 6:22because I was like,
- 6:22"I am as an ally."
- 6:24- But no, don't dress as racist carotimes.
- 6:29- For all the way.
- 6:31- Yeah, so let's try put our children in that.
- 6:34- Be a slutty clown instead.
- 6:35- Yeah.
- 6:36Or just no clowns.
- 6:37I think we're good on clown.
- 6:39- Yeah, that's true.
- 6:39- Okay, so no group clown costumes.
- 6:42- No clown costumes.
- 6:43- So let's sit it out this year, Target.
- 6:45- Maybe next year.
- 6:46- You too.
- 6:47- Yeah, okay.
- 6:48And so, as we just mentioned,
- 6:50it's not easy being a human in this world
- 6:53and there are some challenges that affect women
- 6:55more physically, socially, and often at work.
- 6:59And one of those things is aging.
- 7:01- Like my gray hair.
- 7:02- Like, Sean is gray hair on being unable
- 7:05to hold manic panic die.
- 7:07So it's hard to miss the message
- 7:09that a woman's value lies in her looks.
- 7:11We've done quite a bit of episodes
- 7:14over the last few months just about what it's like
- 7:16to be a woman in this hellscape.
- 7:19And we wanted to talk a little bit more
- 7:22about how there is no escaping the implication
- 7:24that older women are less beautiful than younger women
- 7:28and less valuable.
- 7:30Anti-Asian cosmetics and treatment messages
- 7:33about women hitting a wall after a certain age
- 7:36on social media.
- 7:37And what we see on our screens is undeniable.
- 7:41We have women who are 30 playing 18 year olds.
- 7:46It's crazy.
- 7:50We have women who are over the age of 40 playing 65.
- 7:55- Literally, you know what always cracks me up too?
- 7:58Is within the past year, now that Hillary Duff
- 8:00is having like a career resurgence and going on tour.
- 8:04And this woman is phenomenally like fit, right?
- 8:07- Yeah, she looks amazing.
- 8:09- She looks incredible.
- 8:10Like I saw her show, you went to her show too, right?
- 8:13- No, it was the same night as Olivia D.
- 8:15- That's right.
- 8:16- It was a great show.
- 8:17- And she looks hot as hell, right?
- 8:19- She looks so good at that.
- 8:21- But people were like all these headlines that
- 8:23Hillary Duff looks incredible for 38.
- 8:26Like the suggestion that 38 or maybe 39,
- 8:31she's either 38 or 39, but like she looks great for that age.
- 8:36And I'm like, I'm gonna hold your hand while I say this to you.
- 8:39- That's not old.
- 8:41- Yeah, well even this week, like Camerendia's
- 8:43did a cover with Benji, her husband.
- 8:46And it's like Camerendia's favorite thing in her 50s
- 8:50is to get dressed up and wear red lipstick.
- 8:53- Oh my God, that's so brave.
- 8:55- Even her to do that in her 50s.
- 8:58- But what is her husband's favorite thing to do in his 50s?
- 9:00- To look at her, hopefully, 'cause she looked amazing.
- 9:03- And she looks so good.
- 9:05- She's aging very gracefully too.
- 9:06I mean, and we'll talk about that the term of aging gracefully.
- 9:10- Gracefully.
- 9:11- Her husband's like having, you know, oh she's,
- 9:13you see a woman who's had work done, right?
- 9:16And you think, oh God, she looks terrible.
- 9:19Like she's had way too much done.
- 9:21She looks plastic.
- 9:22She looks so full of billers.
- 9:24And then you juxtapose that to a woman who is aging gracefully
- 9:27or naturally and you're like, oh God, she looks old.
- 9:30- Yeah.
- 9:31- She looks so winning.
- 9:32- Yeah, there's nothing.
- 9:33There's nothing you can do unless you are very wealthy,
- 9:38like Jennifer Anna Stan or something.
- 9:40And they're like, yeah.
- 9:41- She's aging so nicely.
- 9:43And you know she's having stuff done.
- 9:45- Yeah, that's what I mean.
- 9:46- Yeah.
- 9:46- It's like, oh, it's just like not obvious to like the plebs.
- 9:49- Mm-hmm.
- 9:50- Where it's like, oh, you have to be both rich
- 9:53and investing in these things that like the masses
- 9:56haven't caught on to in order to be like acceptable.
- 9:59- But the masses can afford like a private chef,
- 10:01a personal trainer, weekly appeals,
- 10:05- Blood transfusions.
- 10:06- Blood transfusions.
- 10:07- Yeah.
- 10:08- What is that guy?
- 10:10- Brian Johnson.
- 10:11- Oh my God.
- 10:12- Okay.
- 10:12- Okay, actually.
- 10:14So not to like squirrel us off here,
- 10:16but I do think that--
- 10:17- You've never squirreled us off in an episode ever.
- 10:19- But Brian Johnson is actually a really interesting part
- 10:23of this, right?
- 10:23He's not a woman, but he is obsessed with like reversing
- 10:28his age.
- 10:29So he is a CEO, he has this company called Blueprint,
- 10:33which in all fairness, I did do Blueprint meals
- 10:37for a long time and I did lose like 40 pounds.
- 10:40So there is some validity to his diet
- 10:43and what he coaches, but he's obsessed with reversing his age
- 10:46and like moving back the clock essentially.
- 10:50And so him and Peter Teal are the two people
- 10:55who have kind of gone on record within Silicon Valley
- 10:58and said that they do these like weekly plasma transfusions.
- 11:02- Do you have, have you watched his documentary?
- 11:04It's called Don't Die.
- 11:06- I haven't seen all of it, but I've seen clips of it.
- 11:08- Yeah, it's really interesting, the weird things
- 11:10that he does 'cause he wants to age backwards,
- 11:13but the average human can't afford this.
- 11:16- So what's actually pretty crazy is like,
- 11:18he did a little different, he's taking it all from his son,
- 11:20which is like your son's your blood bag.
- 11:22- Yeah.
- 11:23- And then weird and then all so--
- 11:25- It's sticking to straw.
- 11:26- Yeah, it's a young, fertile son.
- 11:27- Oh, Jesus.
- 11:29- Recently he was just diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.
- 11:33So everything he's done isn't working too well.
- 11:36And then also he like publicly tweeted
- 11:39that he made a clone of himself.
- 11:41- And he's like building this clone, these are the words,
- 11:45so we can harvest the organs.
- 11:47- That is, wait, there's movies about this.
- 11:50- Yeah, it's called The Island.
- 11:52- It's a great movie.
- 11:53- It's a great movie.
- 11:54- I'm gonna watch that movie this weekend.
- 11:56- Right, Johnson thought that went, they're onto something.
- 11:59- He's like, wait, this isn't inhumated in the slightest.
- 12:02- Yeah, and you know what,
- 12:03if Hollywood execs could do it to women, they would.
- 12:06- 100%.
- 12:07- You know, we have actually seen this,
- 12:09not just show up kind of within our reality
- 12:12and you know, existing as a woman, but Martha Lausanne,
- 12:16she's the executive director for the Center
- 12:19for the Study of Women in Television and Film
- 12:22at San Diego State.
- 12:23- The Higher Meal, my God,
- 12:25is incredible.
- 12:27- Analyzed women's and men's roles,
- 12:29both in broadcast and streaming television in 2024 and 2025.
- 12:34She found that once actors hit 40,
- 12:37men were far more likely to get roles than women.
- 12:40The majority of major female characters
- 12:43in broadcast and streaming television
- 12:45were in their 20s and 30s, about 60% made up that group.
- 12:50Whereas the majority of male characters
- 12:52were in their 30s and 40s.
- 12:55And let's re-emphasize that these studies were done
- 12:58in 2024 and 2025.
- 13:00'Cause I feel like a lot of people think,
- 13:02well, this doesn't happen anymore.
- 13:03There's roles for older women, like not really, honestly.
- 13:08And even like, I'm a huge Marvel fan girl, right?
- 13:12We've talked about this a lot.
- 13:14A lot of the main Avengers are men in like,
- 13:19they're 40s, 50s and 60s.
- 13:22- And it's like men, it's like always getting salt
- 13:23and pepper is getting hotter.
- 13:25And women, it's like, she has a gray, put her out.
- 13:27- Yeah, yeah. - Put her out, yeah.
- 13:28- And like the female Avengers, I mean,
- 13:31Brelarsen who plays Captain Marvel, I think is my age.
- 13:35I think she's like 37.
- 13:36Scarlett Johansson, oh God.
- 13:39(laughing)
- 13:41Scarlett Johansson is also around my age,
- 13:45but like she was killed off in those movies.
- 13:48So it's in, you know, they keep--
- 13:50- How old would she have been the killer?
- 13:51- Like as an actor?
- 13:53I think she's a little older than me maybe.
- 13:56Scarlett Johansson is maybe like 40.
- 13:59So maybe like, yeah, 36 or something.
- 14:01- So you could be a superhero, but you can't be 40.
- 14:03- Yeah, listen, you're gonna die.
- 14:04Then you can play Aunt May.
- 14:06(laughing)
- 14:09- Then you can be in the movies, but you're gonna be Aunt May.
- 14:11- They're gonna put a horrible white hair wig on you, okay?
- 14:15- I'll say like Peggy Carter.
- 14:16I'm not saying there's no female superheroes
- 14:19in like 30s and 40s.
- 14:20- Yeah. - But when compared to,
- 14:21I mean Paul Bettany's playing Vision.
- 14:24And he's like in his 50s, I think.
- 14:26Elizabeth Olson is playing Wanda,
- 14:28but we don't know if we're ever gonna see her again.
- 14:30She died.
- 14:32- Okay.
- 14:32- So I don't know.
- 14:33And Robert Downey Jr.
- 14:34is getting his second dose of life in the MCU
- 14:37and his 60s, I believe, on Doctor Doom.
- 14:40So it's just, with the older you get, those roles
- 14:43just keep coming if you're a guy.
- 14:45- Yeah, and we see it even as these actresses
- 14:50can survive that 40 curse,
- 14:52that the fewer roles become available to her.
- 14:55While 41% of female characters were in their 30s,
- 14:59only 16% were in their 40s.
- 15:02For men, like we mentioned that,
- 15:04that goes quite opposite.
- 15:05And in fact, more than half of the major male characters
- 15:09and streaming and broadcast television
- 15:11are older than 40.
- 15:13- That does not surprise me.
- 15:15We just had our episode come out about James Bond.
- 15:18- Yeah. - And like, in all of those Bond movies,
- 15:20he's in his 40s, but he's always hooking up
- 15:25with women in like their 20s.
- 15:27They're always-- - They can't have brains.
- 15:29- No, they're just need to be sex objects who die.
- 15:33As we mentioned in the episode,
- 15:35they were near a tragic young dad.
- 15:38- The shortest life span you can have is a woman
- 15:41who has sex with James Bond.
- 15:43It better be the best sex of your life girl
- 15:45'cause you're gonna die.
- 15:46- You're gonna get shot around.
- 15:47- Well, I'm gonna kill you.
- 15:50- Note Dick is worth dying for.
- 15:52- D-Dy another dick.
- 15:54(laughing)
- 15:57- I don't care.
- 16:00- Oh good, James Bond is in bed.
- 16:02You were 25 years old.
- 16:04- I don't know.
- 16:05- What does it say about me?
- 16:06Where I'm like, "I might risk it."
- 16:07- Because you kinda like older guys.
- 16:09Sorry, if I outage you.
- 16:14- That's fine.
- 16:15That's fine.
- 16:15- She does.
- 16:16- I have one to be.
- 16:19But then now they're getting a lot older
- 16:21'cause I'm getting older, you know?
- 16:22So it's like, well.
- 16:23- Oh, when does it start to go, "Woop."
- 16:25There's a bell curve.
- 16:26There's this episode of sex in the city
- 16:28where Samantha meets this man who's like 75.
- 16:32- Okay, yeah.
- 16:33- And she's talking to Carrie and she's like,
- 16:36"Oh, feels the same in the dark."
- 16:38- She's like, "What's your cutoff?"
- 16:40- And she went 50.
- 16:42And then she's like, "Well, what if he was really rich?"
- 16:45And Carrie goes, "50."
- 16:46(laughing)
- 16:49- He was a very young 72, according to Samantha.
- 16:53But I think she slept with him and then it, yeah.
- 16:55- Didn't feel the same in the dark.
- 16:57- Well, that was the--
- 16:58- Oh, he had released "Saturday Balls" or something.
- 17:00- Yeah, I don't remember.
- 17:01- That's why I didn't feel the same in the dark.
- 17:03- Oh, yeah.
- 17:04- You were talking about balls.
- 17:05- Yeah.
- 17:06- I was talking about that episode specifically.
- 17:07- Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 17:08(laughing)
- 17:11- And so, yeah, I think that, you know, over time,
- 17:14we've seen where this age has gone up, right?
- 17:16I think in our parents day and age,
- 17:19it was like, if you were over 25, like 30 at max,
- 17:24you were no longer in actress,
- 17:25or you were playing these kind of like grandmother roles.
- 17:28I think that has started to go up,
- 17:32but I think the way that we've talked about it
- 17:34has really, really changed.
- 17:35So, Shana mentioned, like, she looks great for a age.
- 17:40Like, when I first think of that,
- 17:42the first person I think of is always J-Lo.
- 17:44- Right.
- 17:45- Who?
- 17:46- Yeah.
- 17:47- First informant, we've talked a lot of shit about J-Lo
- 17:48on this podcast, but we cannot say that woman
- 17:50does not look phenomenal.
- 17:52- Oh, oh.
- 17:53- She is fucking gorgeous.
- 17:55- Yeah.
- 17:55- She's hot.
- 17:56She has great style and an incredible body.
- 17:58And you know, she works hard in the gym.
- 18:00- Yeah.
- 18:01- As she had worked on.
- 18:02- Probably.
- 18:03- Yes, I mean, she's very wealthy.
- 18:04She's had worked out.
- 18:05But like, the year average, what, 54, I think?
- 18:09- Yeah.
- 18:10- You're old woman.
- 18:11Like, who just goes to work at her nine to five
- 18:14or has, you know, is a stable mom.
- 18:15- Yeah.
- 18:16- The resources like that.
- 18:17- Look like, but even then, I feel like there are women
- 18:19who like, do and can, like, in the real world as well.
- 18:23Which I think is like interesting.
- 18:25- But it should be the expectation.
- 18:26- Yeah.
- 18:27Yes, exactly.
- 18:28Like, you were allowed to have like a smile line,
- 18:31a forehead line and things like that.
- 18:33But I do think that the conversation has changed.
- 18:36But we don't necessarily see that within all of the
- 18:39kind of romance films that we see today.
- 18:41Like, I'm thinking of that Richard Gear.
- 18:43- Richard Gear movie.
- 18:44Oh my God.
- 18:45He is 76 and I think his co-star is in her 20s.
- 18:49- Yeah.
- 18:50- Yeah, it's horrible.
- 18:52And I mean, Richard Gear is quite attractive,
- 18:55even in his old age.
- 18:57- He's a very handsome man, but like, that is just so
- 19:00- Yeah.
- 19:02- Predatory, frankly, like, it feels strange.
- 19:05And it's because if you had that reversed
- 19:08and you had a 76 year old woman with like a 20 year old man,
- 19:13people would think it was disgusting, horrifying.
- 19:16Right.
- 19:17And then you'd push back and say,
- 19:18"Well, what about that movie with Nicole Kidman?"
- 19:19And her end turn.
- 19:21Well, first of all, Nicole Kidman has had a lot of work done.
- 19:25She's trying to reverse that aging, right?
- 19:28She's had a lot of plastic surgery done
- 19:30to not look the age that you would expect her to.
- 19:33And still, Nicole Kidman isn't 76.
- 19:36Like, Richard Gear.
- 19:37- Yeah.
- 19:38- She's like, in her 50s.
- 19:39So that's a lot different than being like 70,
- 19:43having sex for the 20 year old and 50 having sex.
- 19:45- You know what I'm trying to say?
- 19:46- Yeah, they wouldn't have just a naturally aging,
- 19:4976 year old woman cast a viral.
- 19:51- So having so much fun.
- 19:53- Yeah, and I think that, you know, you look at it,
- 19:55like that is one example in a sea of movies
- 19:59that it's almost like trying to subversa
- 20:03and like that's kind of the point of baby girl.
- 20:05- Yeah, but they still have to cast a very conventionally
- 20:08attractive woman who has had work.
- 20:10- Yeah, yes.
- 20:11- Just to even be the older woman.
- 20:12- Yeah, no, that's a really good point.
- 20:14The marketable.
- 20:15- Yeah.
- 20:16Yeah, I think that what we've seen,
- 20:18and we've heard from a lot of different actresses,
- 20:20is the second they hit like a certain age range,
- 20:25they started to have to play these mother roles
- 20:28or these very unsexy women within it as well.
- 20:34So it's kind of been not just you're no longer casted,
- 20:37but then all of the roles that you are cast within
- 20:41also kind of fall into that grouping.
- 20:44- That's a good point.
- 20:45Gosh, I don't remember the films right off the top of my head,
- 20:47but Sally Fields is cast as Tom Hanks' love interest.
- 20:52And then maybe two years later, she's cast as his mom.
- 20:57That's actually horrible.
- 20:59And they are pretty roughly the same age.
- 21:03- Yeah, yeah.
- 21:03- Yeah, that old hack.
- 21:05- Yeah, yeah.
- 21:06And it reminds me, I was trying to describe this sketch
- 21:09to you before we started.
- 21:11- So Amy Schumer, we could go on a tie-run
- 21:14about a problematic she is, but she did have this show.
- 21:17- I did love that show.
- 21:18- I did too.
- 21:19- So funny, Amy Schumer show.
- 21:20- Inside Amy Schumer.
- 21:22She had this sketch and she's jogging through the woods
- 21:27and she comes across Julia Louie Dryface, Tina Fey,
- 21:31and Patricia Arthet and they're having a tea party.
- 21:34She's like, what are you guys doing?
- 21:36And they said, oh, we're celebrating Julia's last fuckable day.
- 21:40She's like, I'm sorry, her what?
- 21:42- Why?
- 21:42- Well, Julia's about to turn 45, so she's no longer fuckable.
- 21:47She's gonna be cast as Mrs. Claus from now on.
- 21:51Or yeah, Aunt May, she's gonna play the mom.
- 21:55She no longer is.
- 21:57- We're the grand mother.
- 21:58- Yeah.
- 21:59- And then Amy's like, aren't you sad?
- 22:00And she's like, no, I get to just put on the pounds,
- 22:04let my grades grow.
- 22:05Like it's so funny.
- 22:07And then in the very end, they give her a Viking funeral.
- 22:10They send her off in a boat with a tub of ice cream
- 22:13and they light a cigar.
- 22:14- Yeah, it's actually, yeah, it's idea of a barbecue list.
- 22:17This is so like accurate.
- 22:19- It's so accurate.
- 22:20You like, you hit a certain age and it's just like,
- 22:22all right, well, she ain't fuckable anymore unless she's J.Lo
- 22:28or Kim Kardashian.
- 22:30And injects a bunch of money and stuff into her face.
- 22:33And then maybe she can stretch out her fuckability
- 22:37for a little bit longer.
- 22:38But only if she does these very expensive things
- 22:41that the average woman can't.
- 22:42- Yeah.
- 22:43Yeah.
- 22:44And I think just to kind of like illustrate
- 22:46how these times have changed.
- 22:48Like some of the most famous actresses of our times
- 22:52have really felt this impact since the early days
- 22:56of Hollywood.
- 22:57So we have like Betty Davis
- 22:58and the key to successes, keep your hair clean,
- 23:01your clothes neat and your mouth shut.
- 23:03Like about being an actress.
- 23:05Like that's what was expected of you
- 23:06when you're lucky to be here.
- 23:08- Thank God that's not podcast or rules.
- 23:10We've got these screws.
- 23:11- Yeah, now that's why we go virtual most of the time.
- 23:14These studio lights.
- 23:15- I don't know.
- 23:16- They're hitting the wrinkles.
- 23:17- Why do you think I braided that year today?
- 23:19- I've been washing them in.
- 23:20- I've got too many grays coming.
- 23:22We have Joan Crawford in the 1960s saying,
- 23:24I think the thing that frightens me most about growing old
- 23:27is that'll become invisible.
- 23:29In the 1970s we have Doris Day saying,
- 23:32I don't like to think about getting older.
- 23:35I just think about getting better.
- 23:36We have Susan Sarandon in the 1980s saying,
- 23:40when I started it was over by 40.
- 23:43- Oh God.
- 23:43- And so there was truly this insane pressure.
- 23:46And we started to see a shift of that.
- 23:48Like in 2009, Merrill Strupp is quoted saying,
- 23:51I'm 60 and I'm playing the romantic lead.
- 23:53What does this look like?
- 23:54And I think there was a pushback,
- 23:57but we still saw it.
- 23:59Maggie Jellinhaugh has been quoted saying,
- 24:01I'm 37 and I was told recently I was too old
- 24:05to play the lover of a man who was 55.
- 24:07- Oh my God, that is disgusting.
- 24:10- And yeah, I mean, we see it all the time
- 24:13continuing throughout,
- 24:15but just to kind of say like things have shifted,
- 24:18but we're still so far away.
- 24:19- I agree.
- 24:20Let's take a quick break.
- 24:22And then I wanna talk about like some of the ways
- 24:25that people are afraid of dying in the media
- 24:29and afraid of aging and how we see that expressed.
- 24:31(dramatic music)
- 24:34- Welcome back before we deep dive back
- 24:38into aging in Hollywood.
- 24:40Let's talk about Patreon, something that doesn't make you
- 24:43feel older, younger, wiser.
- 24:46Those two don't go together, but you get the gist.
- 24:48We know the economy has not magically improved
- 24:50since the last time we mentioned our Patreon,
- 24:53but a small amount really does make a huge difference.
- 24:56So if you can join us at patreon.com/poppulturejunkie.
- 25:00Podcast and subscribe so you can receive
- 25:02a special members only, reward,
- 25:04like uncut early access to each episode

- 25:09You'll be glad you did because it helps us
- 25:11keep the lights on here at PCJ.
- 25:14And you know, it just helps us, yeah.
- 25:16All the more marriage.
- 25:18- Which is cool.
- 25:19- We are good at it.
- 25:19- We're getting old.
- 25:20- Yeah, since we are in person,
- 25:22now we said we were having a happy hour
- 25:25and a yappy hour because we had a little cocktail
- 25:28before this and you know, that's what keeps you young.
- 25:30- It keeps this young and yapping.
- 25:32- And you see young, too many cocktails you in the outside.
- 25:34- Yeah, you know, well, we gotta survive the horse.
- 25:37- The horse.
- 25:38- The horse.
- 25:39- So we talked about this during our live special
- 25:42at fan fusion.
- 25:43How horror movies have started to use aging
- 25:47and the elderly, especially elderly women
- 25:50as a horror trope.
- 25:51- Scary.
- 25:52- Nothing scarier than being a woman and being aging, right?
- 25:55So like you have these old women who are scary
- 25:59and chasing you through house with their
- 26:01pendulous, sagging breasts.
- 26:02- Oh, like an ax.
- 26:04- Yeah.
- 26:04- I was thinking in a barbarian.
- 26:06- A barbarian also scary.
- 26:07- But yeah, that.
- 26:08- Those titties.
- 26:09- Oh man.
- 26:10But like that is just such a overused horror trope
- 26:13now is the thought of aging.
- 26:15And even to the point where we had an entire movie about it,
- 26:18what was the substance?
- 26:19- Yeah, the substance.
- 26:20- And then Ryan Murphy made a show called Beauty.
- 26:23- It was just basically the story.
- 26:24- A rip off of the substance, which is all just about
- 26:27women's fear of aging.
- 26:29And I will say that I know the substance was
- 26:32kind of making fun of it, right?
- 26:33And like it was a commentary on our fear of aging.
- 26:37- Yes.
- 26:38- Still.
- 26:39- Yeah, I think it's really interesting.
- 26:41So I would kind of put like body horror of like substance.
- 26:44Like the knee and I guess the beauty,
- 26:47but like the need to be so beautiful that you're like
- 26:50willing to destroy yourself.
- 26:52- Yeah, like death becomes her.
- 26:53I mean, that was, you know, 90s.
- 26:55- And so it's like this kind of like self-eating snake.
- 26:59Like your need to be young makes you old and die.
- 27:03- It's a waste of it.
- 27:04- It's a way at who you are.
- 27:06But then there's also just the old woman is horror herself,
- 27:11right?
- 27:12- Arbarian acts.
- 27:14And so we see a lot of like commentary in both of those.
- 27:18- Weapons.
- 27:19Yeah, there's just, there's a lot of like old women who are the scary horror monster in
- 27:25these movies recently that I've noticed.
- 27:27- Yeah, I think it's more common being brought up in Hollywood.
- 27:30But I do think that we've seen that throughout stories in all of time, right?
- 27:35- Yeah, that's.
- 27:36- mythology, you've seen it.
- 27:37Like it is a Hollywood kind of like horror mechanism now.
- 27:43- Yeah.
- 27:44- And you're totally right.
- 27:45Like that's a really good point.
- 27:46You talked about like the influence of Greek mythology and like old storytelling on like
- 27:51modern day storytelling.
- 27:52And there's always been the mother, the maiden, the crown, right?
- 27:56And so once you become the crown, you are horrifying.
- 28:00You know, one wants you.
- 28:01- Yeah.
- 28:02- No, you're not sexually desirable.
- 28:03And then you become not sexually desirable as a woman.
- 28:07You shift into horrifying.
- 28:08- Yeah.
- 28:09- Yeah.
- 28:10- Yeah.
- 28:11- You have no worth, right?
- 28:12Like you're actually like only stealing people's worth life in those.
- 28:17And I think you've seen it a lot through like witches as well.
- 28:21And like pure tanical times.
- 28:22Like these women who are so obsessed with their own beauty and vanity that they become
- 28:29evil.
- 28:30And they heart like it's succumbest, right?
- 28:33They harvest the souls.
- 28:34- They harvest the soul.
- 28:35- Yeah.
- 28:36A man to become more beautiful and trick the next man.
- 28:39And you see that through witches.
- 28:40You see that through Greek mythology.
- 28:43And then now more modernly we see that within aging women and the need to try to reverse
- 28:49that aging.
- 28:50You know, I think it's really interesting because like we mentioned within the 2000s we
- 28:55started to see a shift of that narrative of like, oh, women can be older.
- 29:02And then now and like 10 years later we see it as horrifying.
- 29:07And I think there's something to be said about like the state of the nation in the world
- 29:11when these trends come back.
- 29:13Like how aging is horrifying.
- 29:16It's thin is back in again.
- 29:18And I do think that coincides with the rise of fascism around the world and like controlling
- 29:23women and our voices and that we should just be seen as, you know, the rise of tradwife
- 29:28culture.
- 29:29We should be seen as silent young and understandable.
- 29:33Women with more life experience are like less.
- 29:37Ninety they're less invincible, valuable because they become their own person.
- 29:42And that's why you meet guys and they're like, oh, I don't date a woman who's older than
- 29:4830, right?
- 29:49Right.
- 29:50Because she has her own opinions in her own mind and her own thoughts.
- 29:53I do want to say neither of us are shitting on women who have plastic surgery, have
- 29:58or done.
- 29:59That's a great point there.
- 30:00Listen, this face is full of Botox.
- 30:03Like, and we both die our hair.
- 30:06Yeah.
- 30:07We're not immune to the pressures of society, but it's just, it's like this culture that
- 30:13tells you you have to do this in order to not look the age that you are.
- 30:18And if somebody tells us like, I wouldn't have guessed you are 37.
- 30:22Why does that mean so much to me, right?
- 30:24Yeah, when I get carted, I'm like, what?
- 30:26Yeah, like why is that so exciting?
- 30:28What's wrong with just diving?
- 30:30Yeah.
- 30:31I think it's something to unpack, right?
- 30:32Like why is being younger, like something to celebrate versus like, oh, no, I've like made
- 30:39it this far.
- 30:40Been able to take care of myself like this many years.
- 30:42Yeah, I've made it through this heartbreak and this bullshit.
- 30:45Yeah.
- 30:46I mean, I guess we could dive into like, you're closer to death than your view, your own
- 30:49mortality.
- 30:50But like, really if we're just talking about like aging and Hollywood and like pop culture,
- 30:55yeah.
- 30:56That should impact, you know, if we're not talking about aging and Hollywood and pop culture,
- 31:00then that should impact men too.
- 31:02Yeah.
- 31:03Everybody fears mortality and death.
- 31:04Yeah.
- 31:05But for some reason, when we see these women on television and in movies, they have to be
- 31:11young and fertile and beautiful.
- 31:13Or if they're not, then they have to had paid the money and made the measures to look
- 31:17that that way.
- 31:18That's a good point.
- 31:20So just to like combat the YouTube misogynist where they're like, well, it's biologics.
- 31:26Women are more fertile when they're young and that's what I'm attracted to it.
- 31:31They had to be country.
- 31:32I'm sorry.
- 31:33No, it was perfect.
- 31:34It was perfect.
- 31:35I think of like, when I just think of myself, I'm like, oh, I think I look so much better
- 31:40now than I did 10 years ago.
- 31:42Oh my God.
- 31:43I totally agree.
- 31:44Like, you know, it's funny.
- 31:46I look at pictures of myself from like when I was in my twaties and trying to figure out
- 31:50what my who I was and what I liked.
- 31:53And stuff you could see I was working on it and trying and then a certain point of just like,
- 31:58oh God, who cares?
- 31:59Like, I'm just going to die my hair black because that's what I want.
- 32:02Yeah.
- 32:03But I agree.
- 32:04I think we both are look better than we did 10 years ago.
- 32:06Yeah.
- 32:07Maybe that's because makeup got better now.
- 32:09Maybe.
- 32:10Or like I mentioned, the face.
- 32:11Yeah.
- 32:12Yeah.
- 32:13No, I'll turn it.
- 32:14So.
- 32:15Yes.
- 32:16No, I agree.
- 32:17And I think there's like, I love seeing, like, I follow a lot of counts on Instagram
- 32:23of women who are in their 60s who have tattoos and they're rocking their full gray natural
- 32:29hair.
- 32:30And it's not to say they haven't had something done.
- 32:32Maybe they've had their lips done.
- 32:33Who cares?
- 32:34Maybe not.
- 32:35But like, they're just like, this is what I wanted to wear today.
- 32:37So I'm going to wear it.
- 32:38And it's this pair of Chuck Taylor's and Bag of jeans and a lace top.
- 32:41You know what I mean?
- 32:42Yeah.
- 32:43I love those.
- 32:44Yeah.
- 32:45I think that if we go through so much as women, just like as a society, even like you
- 32:49have to be this, you have to be that.
- 32:51And I do think that we're moving through such a positive way of showing women, showing
- 32:57multi-faceted women within it.
- 32:59But I do think that we still have quite a ways to go in reminding women of any age that
- 33:05they're sexy all the time.
- 33:07And that also you don't owe sexiness to anybody.
- 33:10Yeah.
- 33:11If you don't want to be sexy, then just girl.
- 33:13Yeah.
- 33:14Fucking don't.
- 33:15Yeah.
- 33:16Like, you know what I'm trying to say?
- 33:17But like, if whatever you wear and if you feel sexy in the inside, then yes, girl,
- 33:20you're sexy.
- 33:21Exactly.
- 33:22But also you don't owe that to anybody.
- 33:23Yeah.
- 33:24When you wake up in the morning and you are gassy and bloated, you got a new zit, you got
- 33:28a new wrinkle.
- 33:29It's your, you know, 55th birthday girl.
- 33:32Yeah.
- 33:33Live your life.
- 33:34You still deserve to exist.
- 33:36I agree.
- 33:37I agree.
- 33:38I do want to see more, sorry to say it, baby girls.
- 33:42But in the climate, I want to see more, I want to see more like sexy roles in Holly
- 33:50Wood of women, older women, like getting their fuck on.
- 33:55Oh my God.
- 33:56This reminds me.
- 33:57That was the perfect, that was the perfect segue.
- 33:58I know what she mean by baby girl now.
- 34:00Did you see the trailer for Wicker?
- 34:02Oh my God.
- 34:03Okay.
- 34:04Guys.
- 34:05Yeah.
- 34:06Older woman.
- 34:07You know what?
- 34:08Even then, it's kind of like, oh, she couldn't get anyone.
- 34:11So she needs a Wicker man.
- 34:13Yeah.
- 34:14But I also love it.
- 34:15Like, it's Olivia Coleman, right?
- 34:16That's her name.
- 34:17Yeah.
- 34:18That she's not your standard beauty model.
- 34:20She doesn't look like Nicole Kimner, Charlie's Aaron.
- 34:23She looks like your mom's friend or like one of us who could just be, you know, walking down
- 34:27the street or get offy with you.
- 34:29And she is doing this trailer.
- 34:32She's not to do a trailer.
- 34:33Alexander Skars guard, which if that's the only version of Alexander Skars guard that
- 34:37I could get, hop it on.
- 34:39I have one of the splinterers.
- 34:41Well, I'm sure they figured out in the magic.
- 34:44There has to be like a Wicker man.
- 34:45I'm sure that they figured out splinterless man.
- 34:48I mean, if, yeah, I would be worried about my vaginal walls.
- 34:55And that'll do it for, and that's on aging.
- 34:58So, um, your vaginal walls matter no matter what age you are.
- 35:03You're gonna care a little.
- 35:04RISKING IT FOR Alexander Skars guard.
- 35:07RISKING MY VATCHNAL WALLS FOR Alexander Skars guard, the Olivia Rody store.
- 35:12Hey, I feel like I have talked about, like, how I let that one guy who I thought looked
- 35:17like Alexander Skars guard couldn't care if I lived or died, but talked to him for way
- 35:21too long.
- 35:22And that's what we called him.
- 35:23I don't even know that man's name to this to this judge.
- 35:26He's a judge us, but his name is Alexander Skars.
- 35:28Moving on on the pod.
- 35:29Well, poor one out.
- 35:30So many of our past scrapbook boy Alexander Skars.
- 35:36You know, that's amazing.
- 35:39Um, okay.
- 35:40Anyway, so Wicker man, so you're, you're signing up.
- 35:43You're going to the midnight showing.
- 35:45I am.
- 35:46You need to go with me.
- 35:47Okay.
- 35:48We need to meet in Yuma or something.
- 35:50I'm not taking Andrew to go see it.
- 35:53Really?
- 35:54I need to be shifting it in my seat like, can I go to, you know, Craton Barrel.
- 35:59Yeah.
- 36:00And get some baskets.
- 36:01I don't know.
- 36:02I feel like we need more storage in our house.
- 36:04How do you read decorating?
- 36:05How do you need some?
- 36:07We should get you patio furniture.
- 36:09No, but I do love it.
- 36:11I see this with you.
- 36:12Like that is such a good way to like say it.
- 36:15It's like, Hey, you can be an old lady and get your fuck on, but it's going to have to
- 36:20be with a wicker man.
- 36:21It has to be made of a wicker.
- 36:23Otherwise, you're so well.
- 36:26Literally no other actor would sign up for this.
- 36:28Or if you look like Kim Kardashian, who is terrified of aging, who looks like Wicker?
- 36:33No, I'm saying like she would, she get cast as the fuckable lady because she's, you know,
- 36:40she's really about it.
- 36:41But can you imagine her trying to act with like a wicker chair?
- 36:44It would be perfect actually, both have like the same range.
- 36:47Oh my god.
- 36:49I'm going to sit on you.
- 36:51Because you're a chair.
- 36:53No, that's actually to bring up Kim Kardashian, right?
- 36:56Like, I think she had a quote last year that was like, I would literally like eat my own
- 37:01poop if it made me like look younger.
- 37:05And like, I think that's a sad like she's held up as this like prop of like refusing to
- 37:12age.
- 37:13But even then insecurity that would have to go into that.
- 37:17And I was going to say mental illness, but that kind of feels mean.
- 37:19No, I think insecurity is absolutely that.
- 37:22Like you can't just look in the mirror and be like, you know what?
- 37:25That didn't sag like that five years ago.
- 37:28But I'm alive.
- 37:29I'm healthy.
- 37:30Yeah.
- 37:31I've made a lot of fun memories in five years.
- 37:33So who cares if that piece of skin is.
- 37:35Yeah.
- 37:36Three centimeters lower than it was.
- 37:38So on the Kardashians in general, Christianer got a ton of pros last year because she had a
- 37:45phenomenal facelift.
- 37:46First of all, it looked really, really good.
- 37:48But she has had a string of like eight facelifts through the time that we have known her.
- 37:53It's way too many facelifts.
- 37:54Yeah.
- 37:55Just the skin, right?
- 37:56Like, that's a lot of tightening.
- 37:59And so this doctor before Christianer had her facelift was $75,000.
- 38:07Now it's around 250K.
- 38:10Just for faceless.
- 38:11But like, can you imagine like that is like a G wagon.
- 38:15That is something that is like a whole year salary for some people just on a facelift.
- 38:21Way more than your selling.
- 38:22And these are the images that we see all the time.
- 38:24And we're told we need to strive for that.
- 38:27And we need to buy all the skin care we need to work out.
- 38:31We need to buy organic food when it's literally poisoning us.
- 38:34All of these investments that we have to make.
- 38:37And then even that, it's like, well, you still didn't spend 250K.
- 38:42It's all capitalism.
- 38:43It's you didn't get a facelift instead of a house.
- 38:45Exactly.
- 38:46Exactly.
- 38:47It's all at the end of the day, capitalism that just knows that they can make money off of
- 38:50insecurities.
- 38:51Yeah.
- 38:52Especially women's insecurities.
- 38:55Because what we are fed, especially girls on TikTok, honestly.
- 38:59Yeah.
- 39:00I feel bad for younger girls.
- 39:01I do too.
- 39:02I'm being fed that like everything that is filtered and photoshopped in AI, that's just
- 39:06what you can look like.
- 39:07You can look like this if you buy this.
- 39:09No, you're not.
- 39:10Well, even like 20 year olds getting Botox.
- 39:13Oh my god.
- 39:14It's like, it's preventative.
- 39:16It's like someone just said that to you.
- 39:18Like we haven't actually seen the impacts of that.
- 39:22Probably the best indication of like prolonged Botox, fillers, like impact to young people.
- 39:30It really is Kylie Jenner.
- 39:32She started when she was 16 years old.
- 39:35She has recently been getting a lot of comments about like, oh, like what is happening?
- 39:42Now she looks too old.
- 39:43Now she looks so old and like, yeah, it's this industry.
- 39:47Like I've said, I said this a few episodes ago, like the second I turned 30, I started getting
- 39:51Botox ads.
- 39:52Like all of these different things.
- 39:54That's when I started getting Botox.
- 39:56Yes.
- 39:57The minute I turned 30.
- 39:58Oh, I still haven't.
- 39:59I know.
- 40:00I love it.
- 40:01I love my Botox.
- 40:02Like I said, I'm not going to shit anyone who does things that makes them feel more confident.
- 40:08We all do different things.
- 40:09We all get tattoos.
- 40:11We all dye our hair.
- 40:12We all put on makeup.
- 40:15Yeah.
- 40:16Like whatever.
- 40:17But it's to the extent that you feel like you have to do this in order to keep your job,
- 40:23in order to keep your man, in order to keep your friends or your status.
- 40:29Or like being loved, you're accepted.
- 40:33That's just horrifying to me.
- 40:35Yeah.
- 40:36And this happens outside of Hollywood too, right?
- 40:38Like you, there have been studies that have talked about if you are more physically attractive
- 40:43and you interview better for roles and you move through it and women see that and men
- 40:48see that.
- 40:49If you're more eventually attractive, you're more likely to be hired.
- 40:52Yeah.
- 40:53And they've done studies about that in the workplace.
- 40:55So it's like an inherent bias, but I think what is interesting is how people have said,
- 41:02like, oh, you can't, like as a woman, you just cannot be attractive physically, like attractive
- 41:06or eventually attractive.
- 41:07If you're actually attractive.
- 41:08If you have a wrinkle, like it's actually crazy.
- 41:10No.
- 41:11And so I hate that.
- 41:12I think we see that through the actresses that we have.
- 41:16But you know, hey, if I could look like J.Lo and Cameradie is 55.
- 41:20Oh, like oh, Jimmy and they look amazing.
- 41:23I do also love seeing faces that are aging normal.
- 41:28I don't, aging normalies of messed up way to say, aging without modification, modifications
- 41:34in Hollywood because it's so rare.
- 41:36People are starting to look very homogenous.
- 41:38So Linda Hamilton, for example, was recently in the latest season of Stranger Things.
- 41:44This woman has deep set wrinkles, such a distinctive, our full face.
- 41:52The minute she came on screen, I was just like, I'm doing whatever this woman tells me.
- 41:57She tells me to do 50 push-ups and I'm doing it right now.
- 42:00I think the reason it struck me so hard is because you rarely see those types of faces,
- 42:06right?
- 42:07And this is like a very famous established actress from the Terminator movies.
- 42:11From the 80s.
- 42:12Yeah.
- 42:13And it was always a nice buff body.
- 42:15And she always kind of subverted those tropes of like, you know, big, titty bouncing ladies.
- 42:21She was like, no, I'm going to build shoulders and now I'm older and I'm going to have these
- 42:24wrinkles.
- 42:25Yeah, I love that.
- 42:26And you know, it just really, I don't know, resonated with me.
- 42:28Now I'm not saying I'm going to be that lady someday, maybe I will.
- 42:31It's going to be buff chick grandma.
- 42:33Yeah.
- 42:34Yeah.
- 42:35Yeah.
- 42:36Like, Pamela Anderson, that's a great example of like someone who was just like, I'm not
- 42:40going to do it.
- 42:41I'm not going to wear makeup on a red carpet.
- 42:42Like, I'm going to age gracefully because she already went through that.
- 42:45She already was so sexualized.
- 42:48Yeah.
- 42:49And she's like, actually, that sucked.
- 42:50Yeah.
- 42:51I'm just going to like look how I do and let you know time move in and not to say that, you
- 42:56know, she doesn't have little tweaks here and there if she wants to.
- 42:59Whatever.
- 43:00And she's Adam done before.
- 43:01But like, yeah, she has more makeup on the red carpet.
- 43:03She just, yeah.
- 43:04It will exist.
- 43:05What an icon.
- 43:06What an icon.
- 43:07I don't know why don't gorgeous.
- 43:08I love her.
- 43:09But yeah, we think that you are beautiful and you should be allowed to exist over the age
- 43:13of 40.
- 43:14Yes.
- 43:19And the 60 and 70, 80 and 90 ages above 40.
- 43:24120.
- 43:25I don't know who is blood are you saying?
- 43:28Rest babe.
