Transcript
- 0:16Hello, and welcome to episode seven of Cards and Categories. Looking at that,
- 0:19we're almost getting up to double digits. I'm Mike Coulard from Razball.
- 0:24I'm joined as always by Jeremy Brewer from Razball as well. So Jeremy,
- 0:29how are you doing this evening? Doing good? How about yourself having a
- 0:33good evening? Yeah, it's a it's a different vibe today in Chicago now
- 0:37that just a few hours ago Ricon and Kenny Williams were released from their duties
- 0:44as President and GM of the Socks. So it's I don't think anything's actually
- 0:50gonna change, as we've seen recently with Jerry being Jerry and threatening to move
- 0:56the team for the tenth time after he was never able to make good on
- 1:00the especially more infamous kind of time he tried to move to Tampa in the
- 1:06nineties. But yeah, I'm enjoying myself from that perspective of seeing a new
- 1:11day, new era in the White Sox. But I think it's going to
- 1:17be a little bit more same old, same old, as Patrol Group Fall
- 1:19seems to be coming back, and Jerry's going to put in another Tony LaRussa
- 1:23like figurehead at president. I think I have two fun fun phosphy. First
- 1:29of all, why do we say they were relieved of their duties? They
- 1:32were fired. I'm trying to be nice about it. I mean that's what
- 1:38they announced in the This was like, oh, they just relieved, Like,
- 1:41man, it's been a lot of work, so we're just gonna give
- 1:44him a break. Like, no, you weren't doing any anything, so
- 1:48we need to we need to move on. I mean, honestly, based
- 1:51on the team that they put together this year, I don't know what duties
- 1:53they actually were performing, but that's that's don't How how long can you hold
- 2:01on to your World series when from years ago? And how long can you
- 2:07ride that out with the sunset? Apparently almost twenty years is the is?
- 2:12The is the number? They yeah, almost got there eighteen. But the
- 2:17that World Series still feels like such a flash in the pan, partly because
- 2:23the team just kind of steamrolled the Astros in that World Series in two thousand
- 2:28and five, that it was a sweep end. That White Sox team just
- 2:32got that World Series over in such a tidy fashion. I mean, I'll
- 2:38never forget it because I went to school at Valparaiso and there's plenty of socks
- 2:43fans there and my freshman year dorm. That's when that happened. When the
- 2:47White Sox won the World Series. Many several people on my floor got noise
- 2:52violations that night because they were running through just like going bananas when the Sox
- 2:58finally won the World Series. But yeah, it's gonna be I don't know,
- 3:02Like it's with Jerry threatening to move the team, like it almost does
- 3:07feel a little bit of like come on, bring it on, old man,
- 3:10like he's eighty seven years old, like the least expires in six years.
- 3:15I don't know if he's going to have quite the will to do this.
- 3:20It feels like Jerry C's the A's being the A's and the Royals demanding
- 3:25their new stadium and saying, hey, I want a piece of that public
- 3:30financing money too, like let me in on the action, and trying to
- 3:34just do something to really screw over the city of Chicago one last time before
- 3:38he can really put us all to piece. Well, to me, it
- 3:43feels like a total deflection. It's like there's nothing to do with the city
- 3:47of Chicago and showing up to games when you're putting a good product on the
- 3:52field, So letting, letting go, you know, you're top two guys
- 3:57and saying okay, we're resetting and thinking about moving, like the total reflections
- 4:02saying well, clearly it's not me. Uh clearly, I have nothing to
- 4:05do with the leadership of this club and it's everything. But so to me
- 4:10that that feels, like I said, total deflection, it feels like something
- 4:14the Milwaukee Brewers would do, which I think they did with like two three
- 4:16weeks ago when they were threatening to leave Milwaukee. Yeah. I think all
- 4:20teams threatening to leave leave their cities when they're doing just fine and they're who
- 4:26loved in the cities. I get the Oakland A's because there's nobody showing up
- 4:29for that ballpark. That ballpark is special, there's a lot to be desired
- 4:33at out of the coliseum. They're they're in Oakland, but I the White
- 4:40Sox aren't going anywhere. That's grandstanding and nothing more than that. Yeah,
- 4:45it does just feel like they're trying to leverage the city into giving them a
- 4:49bunch of money to be able stick around or make improvements to the stadium.
- 4:54But I do wonder a little bit if it is, because in baseball it
- 4:58is a very monkey se monkey do sort of industry where whenever a team succeeds
- 5:05another, every other GM tries to follow their path. In terms of if
- 5:10you think about like Moneyball, the Kansas City Royals teams that like won those
- 5:15games with defense and speed and relief pitching. Last year with the Guardians,
- 5:19everyone's like, oh, the Guardians makes so much contact, maybe we should
- 5:23all make contact the Dodgers. The Mets trying to copy the Dodgers. Now,
- 5:29Then I kind of wonder if because Atlanta is just so successful what they
- 5:32do, and I think a lot of it is also generated from the fact
- 5:36that they did get that really nice package from Cobb County to move out of
- 5:43downtown Atlanta and move that stadium up into the North side of Atlanta with all
- 5:47those financial incentives that made it easy for the owners, and the owners got
- 5:53all their real estate like paid off by you know, the taxpayers there.
- 5:57That like, every team is kind of trying to monkey see monkey do that
- 6:00in terms of saying, hey, like the Braves are successful because they were
- 6:04able to leverage uh this, you know, tax incentives in all sorts of
- 6:10other financing out of the people that like, maybe that's the route that these
- 6:15teams are trying to go and I mean, at the end of the day,
- 6:16like greedy billionaires are going to be greedy billionaires, you know, Yeah,
- 6:23And I don't I don't know what the White Sox payrolls off the top
- 6:26of my head right now, but you know, they're they have spent a
- 6:30lot of money. It just doesn't feel like they've spent it wisely. And
- 6:34so I can see maybe a little bit of the reeling that they're that they're
- 6:38going through. But you have to think that with all the moves they made,
- 6:42at least some of that's coming off the books. The question is how
- 6:45much of that's coming back on for them is as they go into in the
- 6:47next year. I would even argue they haven't spent that much. I mean,
- 6:51Andrew been attendee is the large contract they've ever signed in franchise history,
- 6:56and like that is really sad, especially considering they thought that they would be
- 7:02in on that Mani Machado free agency and they talked about being in on it
- 7:08and they just never followed through. And you can kind of tell with the
- 7:12Benintendee contract that they had no intention of ever doing it. I guess maybe
- 7:16it goes a little bit back to what we were saying. I guess it
- 7:19was two weeks ago that things blew up, right, that the clubhouse culture
- 7:25really came to forefront. And you do wonder if like that has a little
- 7:29bit of a sway too, that free agency, how dysfunctional the socks are
- 7:33and just stay away. Yeah, And I was actually surprised. So I
- 7:39pulled up the payroll over on fang Graphs and their twenty three payroll was was
- 7:45estimated at one hundred and seventy seven million, and a lot of that's coming
- 7:49from guys like Yas Monti, Grandal, Liam Hendrix, Jean Macada, Eloy,
- 7:57like the guys Tom Anderson. Somehow they're paying three million dollars to Elvis
- 8:01Andrews, who actually has been probably worth the three yeahs at this point.
- 8:05Yeah, at this point, and there's just like looking at the guys that
- 8:09aren't even on the team, like Larie Garcia. So you know, but
- 8:15going to twenty four, they've got under one hundred million, you know,
- 8:16accounting four at this point. So it's it's gonna it's gonna open up with
- 8:20a lot of what they've done. And they've got a lot of guys that
- 8:24are pre arm to take advantage of two. Yeah, exactly, Well,
- 8:28we'll get away from this kind of darkness that the Socks involved and get to
- 8:33something a little fun for the weekend. I want to talk again about Julio
- 8:37Rodriguez because I think he's the number one story of the past week. Over
- 8:43the weekend, he set a record for most hits you know, four games,
- 8:48which I mean it's a very well known record, you know, and
- 8:52so uh it would a weird thing like when I saw that kind of being
- 8:56scrolled across bottom lines and it will be network and everywhere. But he put
- 9:00up seventeen hits and four games, which set a record, and he is
- 9:03hotter than the Magma. Right now is the Mariners have stormed their way back
- 9:07into the wild card race, and I'm here for it. That Like,
- 9:11I love this Mariners team a lot like the Orioles team. They're young,
- 9:16they're fun, They've got a superstar that really makes the TV light up in
- 9:20Julio. So I'm all board this Mariners come back train. Yeah, and
- 9:26to your point of breaking the infamous record held by milk Stock of the Brooklyn
- 9:31Robbins from nineteen twenty five, So we're really digging deep here. It's like
- 9:37it's all those statistics that you always hear on a scroll bar on ESPN or
- 9:41it will be network of Hey, you know this, he broke the record
- 9:45for games played in the Twilight in the seventh ending playing left field and hit
- 9:50two singles, Like It's like who kept the stat who was actually tracking that?
- 9:56So you can create a record for any thing. But I think what's
- 10:01most interesting to me about this is, uh, you know, kind of
- 10:05reading his comments and the talk about that four game stretch, is it coincided
- 10:11with its change in his stance that he made. It wasn't just that he
- 10:15got hot. It coincided with an actual change in his approach, which is,
- 10:20you know, always what you want to see is you're, you know,
- 10:22considering is this real? Is this luck? What it is? And
- 10:26we know who the Rodriguez is incredibly talented, So there's I'm not questioning that,
- 10:33but it's it's an interesting thing that he has. I'm gonna say struggled
- 10:35to a degree this year. Has he lived up to full expectations? I
- 10:39think his expectations were incredibly high, but for him to adjust the stance with
- 10:46more kind of a wider base to start, I think is kind of what
- 10:50it makes me think a little bit more of a Wan Soto approach, not
- 10:54to the same degree, but having that more wide stance and give you a
- 10:58little bit less motion in the swing control a little bit more. So the
- 11:03question is that he just unlocks something and figure something out. And if he's
- 11:07done what he has to this point not figuring things out, that's scary.
- 11:11Yeah, And I mean, I think it was kind of marching on to
- 11:16be maybe a disappointing season if you had drafted Julio Rodriguez in the first round
- 11:20of your fantasy drafts this past spring. But now at this point he's hitting
- 11:26two eight seventy eight three thirty six, four sixty two. That's good for
- 11:31one twenty four w r C plus, which is it's all right, like
- 11:35you're not gonna be mad about that, but the counting stats are right where
- 11:37you want them to be. All along. He's at twenty one homers with
- 11:41thirty three stolen bases, seventy six runs, seventy nine RBI. That is
- 11:46a first round player, easy. So I think that like it's going to
- 11:50be an interesting narrative for him going to the off season. And I was
- 11:54obviously setting up the seg here because what we're going to do for the rest
- 12:00of the show is do a twenty twenty four mock first round, and so
- 12:07Jeremy before we kind of set that up. Do you have anything else that
- 12:09you wanted to add on Julio or the Mariners here? No. I do
- 12:13one thing I would comment on Julios is you look at his season line.
- 12:18I think it's really interesting that last year he came I would say, didn't
- 12:22come out of nowhere. He didn't come out of nowhere, but he would
- 12:24he got hot, and he had an incredible season, and I think the
- 12:26thought process was, if he can just do this across a full season,
- 12:31what would that look like? And if you look at his line this year
- 12:33compared to last year, he's played about ten less games this year compared to
- 12:37last year. His stats were remarkably similar. He's got a few more steals
- 12:43less year, a few less home runs less. This you know, this
- 12:46year, but I mean his walk rates within point three points of where he
- 12:50was, his strikeout rates within point seven you know, average was within six
- 12:56points. Like he's the same guy, he's listen crow, I mean that,
- 13:01Yeah, the hot street helps don't get me wrong to put him in
- 13:03that spot, but yeah, you that's kind of what you hope going to
- 13:07the season. And then if you kind of fell asleep early and when he
- 13:09had a little bit of a learning curve and he made a league adjusted,
- 13:11he adjusted. It looks like he's adjusting back. And you've got to be
- 13:16happy at this point as a fantasy fantasy owner, probably especially a dynasty owner,
- 13:20having having Julio Rodriguez because he looks, you know, still at twenty
- 13:24two years old, he's still learning and he's only going to get better.
- 13:28Yeah, And I mean it's combined one thirty five w RC plus over the
- 13:31two years, So I mean, that's a fantastic hitter. If it's coming
- 13:35with around you know, seventy to eighty homers and stolen bases combined, you
- 13:39cannot ever discount that. So yeah, like I said, we're gonna go
- 13:46through today and the rest of the show by setting up twenty twenty four and
- 13:48kind of looking forward. It's been it. I think it's more kind of
- 13:52like the dog days of August right now. And my Waverwire article this weekend
- 13:56I called the loll because like there's a company nation of Baseball is a huge
- 14:03volume game, and at this point there's been lots of it, but the
- 14:07teams are starting to kind of settle, and like the wildcard races aren't like
- 14:11totally getting quite as hot as they will in late September. Plus most fantasy
- 14:16leagues, you're starting to really separate into halves and have nots, and you
- 14:20know, it's really narrowing down to five or six teams that are trying to
- 14:22win your leagues. So because of that, as well as like news just
- 14:26being a little bit slower, we're gonna do a mock of the twenty twenty
- 14:31four first round of fantasy drafts. We're going to do just back and forth,
- 14:35twelve picks a twelve teamer, and we're also going to analyze some of
- 14:41our favorite cards of those players. So stick around here. We're gonna take
- 14:45a short break, and then we're gonna come back by deciding who gets to
- 14:48pick first and go into the draft. Hi, Mike here. Obviously we
- 15:03recorded these segments before news of Shohei Otani's torn ligament in his elbow broke on
- 15:09late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, So we took him in a draft pretty
- 15:16high and had some pretty glowing things to say about his cards. I think
- 15:20the card value will still hold pretty well just because of who Otani is.
- 15:22But take the comments on his draft value for twenty twenty four with a little
- 15:28grain of salt. But I think the rest of the analysis still holds.
- 15:31So hopefully you enjoy these segments. And here we go. Okay, welcome
- 15:48back everybody. Like I said, we're going to do a draft of the
- 15:52first round of twenty twenty four for Fantasy Baseball, going through and just doing
- 15:56like a twelve teamer back and forth to decide who's going to go first.
- 16:00I figured we'd have a little game a little more fun than a coin flip,
- 16:04because I think one of our tropes that I'm starting to develop is how
- 16:10fast is that is that guy on stat caste I can tell Luke releague and
- 16:17aren't we well, I mean, you know his sprint speed by heart now,
- 16:19so I'm not going to ask you. The sprint speed I have pulled
- 16:26up is for Shay Langleiers, so I want you to percolate on that a
- 16:30little bit, and I'll let other people look up his stat cast page because
- 16:33it is one of the funnier stat cast pages it's he's got a one first
- 16:38percentile on XBA, which is not something you've ever want to see. So
- 16:45that's how much of a struggle it's been for Shay Langliers this year. I'm
- 16:49gonna do just an over under. If you get it right, it's like
- 16:52a true false, you get the first pick. If you get it wrong,
- 16:56you do not get the first pick. So Jeremy over under eighty and
- 17:02a half for the sprint speed percentile for Shay Lengle years eighty and a half.
- 17:10Oh she's not. I feel like this is a trick question. So,
- 17:15oh man, the percentile, I mean, it's is it? This
- 17:18is within within position we're talking here. No, it's all of the league,
- 17:23all league, We're all up. I mean I have to go under.
- 17:30I have to go under. How can the world can JS be that
- 17:33fast? He does not steal bases? I don't. I don't know how
- 17:36many he has this year. But I feel like I feel like I'm being
- 17:40baited into this one. So tell me I'm wrong. It's gonna be over,
- 17:44But I'm sticking with under. It is over. It's eighty second percentile.
- 17:48He's the highest ring to catch her. So I a feeling that,
- 17:52like I had a feeling that you were baiting me into this one. To
- 17:56that is you're making a sagas sharn. Obviously I had to pick the the
- 18:00other the over because it was so ridiculous and I'm like, no, I'm
- 18:03gonna feel like an idiot. I say, Leers one of the fastest guys
- 18:07in the league. So new appreciation for shadling of leaders as well. So
- 18:12you get the first pick, I'm really really on the edge of my seat
- 18:17trying to figure out who you are taking. Yeah, it's gonna be a
- 18:19tough one. I know it's gonna be a tough one. And actually,
- 18:22I have a good sake for this because when I was scrolling through and debating
- 18:26who to ask you about the sprint speed question, our boy Jake Burger has
- 18:30a faster sprint speed than my number one pick. Actually on percentiles, my
- 18:34number one pick is Ronald Acuna. I don't think that there's really any questions
- 18:40across the board when you're looking at a guy who's on pace for I don't
- 18:45even what's it pacing out to right now. You're you're probably more aware of
- 18:49it because you have him in the CBS League we're in and CBS always puts
- 18:52it up, but he said he was close to pacing the forties. Seventy
- 18:56was roughly where he was at. So yeah, he's at fifty six stone
- 19:02basis now. I think seventy seventy five is probably where he's gonna end up.
- 19:07Forty homers might be a little bit of a push, but I mean
- 19:10he's hitting three thirty two, four, seventeen, five, sixty seven.
- 19:15I don't It doesn't get better five by five Rodo categories than Ronald Lacuna,
- 19:21and the counting stats are gonna be absurd again next year because that Braves team
- 19:26isn't going to go anywhere famously, they're all locked up and it's a great
- 19:30team. So I'm going Ronald Dacunia with my first pick. Well that was
- 19:36that was a tough one, and I'm gonna you're you're gonna laugh because Ronald
- 19:42Lacuni was not first on my board. No wait, are you serious?
- 19:45Ronald Lacuni is not first on my board. So we were both joking before
- 19:49the pod. Uh, this is just you know, gimme, whoever gets
- 19:52the first pick is just it's inevitable who we're picking. We were both talking
- 19:56about different guys. That's funny with with the second pick of the this very
- 20:02official draft, I'm going to show, hey, I was otaniky and you
- 20:07know the reason being, why do I take Why would have? Would I
- 20:10have taken him over Ronald Acuna is solely for the fact that I feel like
- 20:15I'm getting a guy that could chant challenge a Kunia stats to a degree.
- 20:21He's he's not in the same league. Well, he's in the same league
- 20:23from a stats protective that he's I mean, the guy's already has forty three
- 20:27homers and seventeen steals, hitting three oh six. I mean, he's still
- 20:30incredible what he's doing with with the bat. But he's an ace pitcher.
- 20:37It's like it's a it's a two for one, and so I think that's
- 20:41really for me. While what's what's driving this one is, uh, it's
- 20:45so hard to find good pitching and if you can pick, take one pick
- 20:49and you can get a top five hitter, which I think there's no question
- 20:53Akuna is a top five hitter. Uh, And you could argue he's a
- 20:57top five or ten pitcher and the league. And so I'm going for the
- 21:00two fur h that I get a starting pitcher and a solid bat off off
- 21:07the off the page here, Sokuni is number one of my book going into
- 21:11twenty four. At this point, I'm sorry, I say you did.
- 21:17That's Freudian flub there. But Latani is number one in my book and I
- 21:21have mover Kunya. Okay, Wow, I could have sworn you were talking
- 21:26about it, Kunya. So that is I think their neck and neck.
- 21:29I don't think that there's going to be many drafts next year where the first
- 21:33pick isn't one of those two guys. I mean, barring like obviously injury
- 21:37down the stretch here, or like Otani signing with the A's. Yeah,
- 21:42except for there's something draft outs where there's all the guys from New York and
- 21:47Aaron Judges number one of the board. Again, that could have all the
- 21:51home all the home leagues. So all right, third, third overall pick?
- 21:55Who do you have? Uh? Okay? So this is where I
- 21:59think it's going to start getting interesting here. I mean, after these,
- 22:02I think the first two is a big tier, but I think third,
- 22:07I'm gonna go with Mookie Bets. I do like taking floor this high just
- 22:12and that is a lot of what Mookie's gonna give you. Muki is just
- 22:18a monster in terms of counting categories, just like a Kunya sitting at the
- 22:22top of the order for another just absurd. Dodgers lineup for next year,
- 22:29you know that they're going to be great, and who knows, honestly,
- 22:32it might be Otani hitting right behind him next year. And the bigger distinguishing
- 22:38factor here for Muki going forward is he's gonna have triple eligibility most likely.
- 22:45I think there are gonna be some leagues he might be a little bit short
- 22:48on shortstop because he's only at last time I checked, I think it was
- 22:52sixteen games. Let me confirm it it is, but it's twelve games started.
- 22:56There's lots of leagues that it might be a twenty game played or ten
- 23:00games started threshold. So he should qualify at second, short and outfield,
- 23:07which gives you just great ability to work through the rest of your draft in
- 23:11terms of filling in where you need, where you need spots, and managing
- 23:15your team throughout twenty twenty four. You can slide him around those three different
- 23:19spots. It's really clutch. I mean, I think if you're taking Mooki,
- 23:23I would be using him at second base and being able to just kind
- 23:27of pick up more and more outfielders going forward. He's kind of a perennial
- 23:33thirty five homer, fifteen stolen base guy with like a two eighty is sh
- 23:37average, so just really really solid and you can't you're just gonna count on
- 23:42it. He just plays and plays in place. I love the pick.
- 23:47Bets was number three on my board. The only thing that you didn't mention
- 23:51is that the lineup he's in, he's a lock for one hundred maybe one
- 23:53hundred and twenty runs in that lineup, and that's that's with everything else that
- 24:00he does. And I agree, I think the tiebreaker with him and the
- 24:03next few guys, may that be that positional flexibility at that point in the
- 24:07draft. I love what that what that can do for for a team.
- 24:11Okay, who's your second pick? Well, I think this is this is
- 24:15where it starts to get tight. For me, I was pretty confident number
- 24:18three in Bets, and I think the next I'd say, next two guys
- 24:22to me, maybe next four. You could all make arguments for and in
- 24:26any order that you want to go. But but for me and probably not
- 24:30a guy that I was too terribly hot in going into twenty twenty three.
- 24:34But I am going with Bobby Witt Jr. In the fourth overall pick,
- 24:40and the reason being, uh, you know, with it could go to
- 24:44what you've mentioned is floor looking at floor with has has really been consistent with
- 24:51what he's done. He's shown growth this year and his handling the strike zone
- 24:55and what he can do. And you know, he's very very likely gonna
- 25:00have a thirty forty five season, maybe thirty fifty depending on wherehere he ends
- 25:07up here. And you know, he he's not had luck this year,
- 25:11Like if you look at his numbers, there's not it's like inflated all by
- 25:14any luck. It's it's really driven his holy pie, his performance. And
- 25:18he's had a, like I said, a pretty gosh starting consistent year from
- 25:23from everything that I would consider. You know, So, I think having
- 25:30a guy that can lay in the infield and not clog up here outfield picks
- 25:36early and I can deliver forty or fifty steels, thirty home runs and he's
- 25:41gonna, you know, gonna be delivering a decent amount of counting stats.
- 25:45I like him there. I was very surprised as I was putting my ordering
- 25:51together where he where he fell. But as as the more and more I
- 25:55looked at it, he's just been consistent all year long. He just are
- 26:00a little slow, but be beyond that he's been he's been money. So
- 26:03Bobby with Junior for me in that fourth pick, Yeah, and I don't
- 26:10think you're out of balance. Actually, beat On and Grave we're talking on
- 26:14their podcast earlier this week that they think that Wit is a lock for a
- 26:19top five pick. I'll disclose that I actually I had a ninth unlike my
- 26:23list of like what we're going through. But I do think that like four
- 26:27through nine or ten is it's a little bit more of kind of finding your
- 26:33preference. And for me, the nits on Bobby Wit are like the strikeout
- 26:41rate he has dropped, but I don't like that he's not walking enough still,
- 26:45Like it's still a little bit of a low walk rate for me,
- 26:48and I'm still concerned that like that strike rate could creep back. And then
- 26:53after that it's just playing in Kansas City, having that Royals lineup around him
- 26:57that I think most of these other guys that we're talking about will just be
- 27:02in more solid lineups. So I have no qualms with that, but I
- 27:06just had him rated a little bit lower. All right, who do you
- 27:10got? Who do you got? Number five? So for number five,
- 27:15I'm gonna take I'm doing Freddie Freeman. I think it is a little aggressive,
- 27:21but I think when it goes back a little bit to what we're saying
- 27:23in terms of floor and tune, with a three thirty batting average is right
- 27:30the floor pretty much, and I don't see that ever going down anytime soon
- 27:36with the shift rules going away. That you can see the jump in his
- 27:40babbit this year to three seventy one, and that's not a fluke like he's
- 27:45always run high babbips because he can just hit, hit, hit, And
- 27:48it's gonna say that how that high because he can find the gaps. Now,
- 27:55obviously the actual homers and art and stolen bases are a little bit lower
- 27:59than these other guys were talking about. But when you're talking somebody who's hitting
- 28:04for that high of a batting average, that gives you so big of an
- 28:10advantage in that category. It can be hard to pull yourself out of a
- 28:12batting average roll. And if you're getting work put in from Freddy Freeman at
- 28:19the three twenty plus clip, like it adds up because again, this is
- 28:23a guy that just plays. He's played pretty much every game since two seventeen.
- 28:32He's at one hundred and sixty two hundred and fifty eight sixty in the
- 28:34COVID season one fifty nine, one fifty nine on pace again for playing in
- 28:40just about every game this year. So it's just steady contributions. You can
- 28:45set him and forget him at first base and really be able to focus on
- 28:49taking higher risk kind of in the second, third, and fourth rounds.
- 28:55Yeah, I'm kind of like you with you the Freddie Freeman. It is
- 28:57almost perplexing to me. And in this as I look at the first round,
- 29:02you're going for high, high floor and you want speed. Uh that's
- 29:07kind of my opinion is what you want and you don't want somebody's gonna drain
- 29:10your batting average. And what I struggle with freemanut is I just as you
- 29:12look at him, I just like he doesn't have the speed, doesn't have
- 29:15the speed, like the guy's got seventeen stolen bases this year. Yeah,
- 29:18exactly, which I think is surprising. And so I definitely struggled with where
- 29:22to put him. To your point, the batting average. It's not like
- 29:26he's gotten lucky. You know, his his ex batting average over the last
- 29:30four years, the lowis he's had was three thirteen. Yeah, so you
- 29:34know the guy can just flat out hit so a guy I had a little
- 29:40bit lower, and but I haven't clearly in the first round. But I
- 29:44think it goes back to your point where you know, after the first few
- 29:45guys, there's probably the next seven or eight guys that you can make up
- 29:51any argument for and in any order that you want and be pretty gosh darn't
- 29:56happy with with what you got. So yeah, I like your Freeman pick.
- 30:00I think it gives a very solid floor and the flexibility you have later
- 30:03to take anybody that's gonna put a drain on the average is something you actually
- 30:08wouldstand, whereas a lot of others won't be able to. Yeah, so
- 30:11who are you taking it at number six? Then? Well, number six,
- 30:17I am going back to I'm gonna keep going on the youth train here
- 30:21and I'm going back to what we open the show with Julio Rodriguez. I'm
- 30:25going with Julio and I'm very thrilled to be partnering him with Mobby Witt,
- 30:32with that power speed upside. To your point, neither of them the the
- 30:38average. I don't think either of them is gonna ever be a two forty
- 30:41two fifty hitter. But you know, I think we comfortably. You know,
- 30:45it's a two eighty maybe a two ninety type of guy, So they're
- 30:49gonna be solid there. But both of those guys, you know, pairing
- 30:53them together a good good chance for eighty steals between the two of them,
- 31:00and those those counting stats are going to be to be there. So I
- 31:04like Julio. He The only only concern I have with Julio is durability.
- 31:11And it's not like he's missed time. It's just his playing style. He
- 31:17is all out player and it, you know, it kind of reminds me,
- 31:22and I say this a little tongue in cheek, but it reminds me
- 31:26of a Mike Trout when he first came up. That he was just all
- 31:29over the place, running in the wall in center field, making every play.
- 31:32And eventually it's caught up with Trout. Now, it took years for
- 31:37it to catch up, but it all it takes is when you play that
- 31:40way, for just one little thing to nag and to cause problems, so
- 31:44I don't think that's happening anytime soon. So I'm pretty confident with that floor
- 31:48that I have. So I said Julio Rodriguez, I am very very happy
- 31:53to have him at number six. Yeah. No, I think that's a
- 31:56great pick for all the things that you've listed overall. And I mean he's
- 32:01also like one of those guys that you can start dreaming on just more things
- 32:06being added to the repertoire just because he is only twenty two, and I
- 32:10mean the sky is really the limit because he's kind of entering those peak years.
- 32:15I'm a little jealous of the cars that you get to pick because it's
- 32:20gonna be some fun ones between Otani, Bobby Wit and Julio Rodriguez there.
- 32:24Yeah, I don't even think about that part of our draft because this is
- 32:28gonna be the fun part. There's gonna be some real quality there. I
- 32:30don't think Freddie Freeman unless you're going logo fractor on us or something as anything
- 32:36too too overly exciting. Oh yeah, I'll find something good. I'll take
- 32:39through it. Okay. So with the seventh pick, now, I'm gonna
- 32:45have to go with Fernando Tatiques Jr. I think he's right in the same
- 32:52kind of quality of Julio and Akunya in terms of and Bobby Witt in terms
- 32:58of the be power combo. And this year the power is down a little
- 33:05bit. Like he entered the year with a career I saw that was up
- 33:12above three hundred at three h three, but it's dropped at two oh three
- 33:15this year. And you can tell he's still kind of working himself back into
- 33:19shape after missing all twenty two from the injuries and the suspension. But I
- 33:25mean, in his hundred games so far, he has twenty homers and twenty
- 33:30three steals, and he's been playing a really supreme right field, so he
- 33:35looks really comfortable out there. I think he's gonna be ultimately, you know,
- 33:39a top five outfielder when it's all said and done by the end of
- 33:43twenty twenty four. And you just kind of have to hope that the shoulder
- 33:46and the risk keep healing more and more in the off season and he can
- 33:51become a really really elite version of himself like he was in twenty twenty one
- 33:55again, but even still like you're going to get it. At this point,
- 34:00he's pacing for about a thirty thirty season in one hundred and thirty one
- 34:05hundred and twenty five games. So you can't complain if you took him this
- 34:08year pretty high in your draft, because at at this point, yeah,
- 34:13if you're getting a thirty thirty season out of anybody in your first round pick,
- 34:16you're gonna be happy. Yeah, you know. The only the reason
- 34:21I had Tatties lower my list is what exactly what I said with Hulu reever
- 34:23you gets a few months ago, is the injury concerns. And he's actually
- 34:28shown a little bit here and there injury and off the field. Maybe uh
- 34:32concerns with Tattis, but on a per game basis, per bat basis,
- 34:37whatever you want to look at it, he is riding that verge of the
- 34:42top five five pick, and so I can't fault it. Probably not a
- 34:45guy that I'm going to own a whole lot Latin next year. Maybe it's
- 34:50the West Coast later start times. I don't know what it is. I
- 34:53mean, I just took Kulu, so I can't. I can't use that
- 34:55that excuse. But you know, I think for me, there's a little
- 35:00bit more risk and Tatis that I'm willing to take on at that point in
- 35:05the draft. But the numbers speak, the numbers speak for himself, so
- 35:08I definitely see why why you're leaning in there too. Fernando Tatiss Jr.
- 35:15Yeah, So who are you going to take with number eight? All right,
- 35:20well, number eight, I'm going to continue taking guys that I just
- 35:24absolutely love because I'm at this point, I'm just going to straight down my
- 35:28list. You are not interrupting my role at all as far as taking the
- 35:32guys that I want. I'm gonna go with Kyle Tucker. Okay, at
- 35:37number eight, Kyle Tucker. And it's part numbers of what he's done,
- 35:44but part of I think Kyle Tucker is better than what he showed. I
- 35:49think he is. You know, the Astros for a few years just messed
- 35:52around with him. They could not commit to him, wouldn't give him the
- 35:55chance that the guy who was going thirty thirty in the minors like it was
- 35:58nothing. And this year he's he's very very likely going to have a thirty
- 36:04thirty season. He's gonna hit just about three hundred and that lineup, the
- 36:08counting stats are right there. He already has ninety two ribbies for the season.
- 36:15He's only got sixty nine runs, which I think is more of a
- 36:19fluke than anything at this point in time. So you know, he is
- 36:22a guy that bats right in the middle the order of the majority of the
- 36:27time he's batting clean up or five. So the fact that he doesn't have
- 36:30more runs a little a little surprising with his speed, so I think that
- 36:34that does come back. So I think pairing him with the guys I've already
- 36:37taken off the board and getting a little bit more average help on there.
- 36:42Like I said, I think that Kyle Tucker has a forty forty season in
- 36:45him, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that, you know, happening
- 36:49next year. As you know, he goes into what would be his twenty
- 36:52seven year old season, and for folks that follow aging twenty seven is typically
- 36:58the peak of a player's career. So I think he's got incredible upside next
- 37:05year, and for whatever reason, just not being a flashy player, people
- 37:08sleep on him. So love and Kyle Tucker at number eight. No,
- 37:13Yeah, I think that's a great pick. I mean I had him right
- 37:16in my top ten item ten, but the average is great to see that
- 37:22bounce back this year after it dipped to two fifty seven last year. It's
- 37:25back up to tween ninety seven, two ninety four and twenty twenty one.
- 37:29So that is really huge because when you can just block that average and you
- 37:36can do a lot of cooler things later in the draft, you know,
- 37:39all right, So I will come up with number nine, and I feel
- 37:45like this is gonna He's gonna fall a lot, but this is gonna be
- 37:51I think it a little sneaky for people, is Aaron Drudge, Like I
- 37:57can't believe he's kind of fallen to this point because I mean, at this
- 38:00point in the year, I know that you've been knocking the injury stuff,
- 38:05and I would have agreed if Aaron Judge had been out with some sort of
- 38:08soft tissue hammy, calf, oblique, but the fluky right field in Dodger
- 38:16Stadium is what caused his season to be derailed with that toe injury. If
- 38:22you just at this point take his season line, he's got seventy games,
- 38:25three hundred plate appearances, you double it. You would be at forty eight
- 38:31bombs, one hundred and four runs, ninety six RBI, six stolen bases
- 38:37with a two seventy six average. And like that even feels light because he
- 38:43didn't get to hit in July and most of August for just getting that you
- 38:47know, bouncy ball up into the heated up air during the summer. So
- 38:52I think, like Aaron Judge could be a really good block for fifty plus
- 38:59homers next year, looking at something like a two eighty average chipping in.
- 39:02You know, I don't think he's ever going to do sixteen stolen bases again
- 39:06like he did in twenty twenty two because it's kind of a contract year and
- 39:08he's shown everything he could do. But I think he could get ten stolen
- 39:12bases. But then again, we haven't seen him run too much with the
- 39:15new rules this year, so he could even push that up. So it's
- 39:21mostly just the the upper side, Like the ceiling here for Aaron Judge is
- 39:28to the moon, and so at at what am I at nine? I'm
- 39:31at nine? Nine? Yeah, at nine, Like I will take that
- 39:37in trying to see if he can have a bounce back year. You have
- 39:38to think that the Yankees will spend this offseason and try to put something around
- 39:44him because it's clearly not worked the strategy the past couple of years that they're
- 39:49going to have to go out and try to make some bigger moves and that
- 39:52should allow him to just see more pitching. That. Yeah, the dude
- 39:57slug is slugging over six hundred this year. That he's got great numbers,
- 40:01He's all the stack cast data looks great. It's just that that right field
- 40:07wall and Dodger Stadium really messed up this season. Yeah, and I think
- 40:10this will be the first and probably the only one that I'm going to really
- 40:14disagree with you on. And then you set it up perfectly because you kind
- 40:16of knew I was going to I'm not touching Aaron Judge with a ten foot
- 40:21poll. You know, it's I had him right now in the middle of
- 40:24the second round. Is the earliest I would even consider it. You know,
- 40:29if I look back, so the last six seasons and you're probably have
- 40:32his pages up right now, so you probably know. But how many seasons
- 40:37is he had of more than one hundred and fifteen games the last six years?
- 40:40And I'm including the COVID year to help my point. Yeah, yeah,
- 40:45it is three. But like I said, this is why I qualified
- 40:47it with like it was a fluke injury, which it's really been the first
- 40:52one in his career. If anything, I think that might have helped because
- 40:55it kind of gave him the year to slow down and like actually probably work
- 41:00on strengthening some of those things and not have the grind of an entire season
- 41:06on his obliques and hammies and stuff. But if it had been a off
- 41:09injury, I would totally be with you in the second round. But I
- 41:13mean, I think he can come back strong from the toe and be able
- 41:17to just put up another monster season. Yeah, I think the upside here
- 41:23is incredible. And if but where I struggle, if it's if he's my
- 41:28first pick, you know, I'm sitting here going I'm okay. If I'm
- 41:32wrong and I don't take him, I am kicking myself all year long.
- 41:37If I take him, and I'm like, I had that inkling that his
- 41:40ceiling is high, but his floor is actually kind of low in the first
- 41:45round here, and to me, there's still a few guys on the board
- 41:49that I'm a little bit more comfortable with taking and I don't feel like I
- 41:52have the level of risk. But there's there's a number of guys that I
- 41:58have a head of our judge. But if you're right you look like a
- 42:01genius. If I'm right, I just don't own him, so I guess
- 42:06it doesn't really remember. So yeah, what what pick are you gonna take
- 42:10with that? With your tenth So we've got two picks left, or I've
- 42:15got one pick. You've got two picks. But here you go, here's
- 42:17your chance for some safety. Well we're going and I'm gonna take a spin.
- 42:22Even though this is not the order I originally had to. I just
- 42:25look at my list, but I'm building the well rounded team. It's really
- 42:29what I'm looking for at this point. Is this in a team? So
- 42:32like, you know what, we're not playing this out next year. Yeah,
- 42:38man, I was going for a clubhouse. Uh you know, jelling
- 42:42here, I am going to take a starting pitcher, okay, in the
- 42:47middle of the well, towards the back of the first round, and I
- 42:51you probably can guess who it is. There's really one starting pitcher that probably
- 42:53outside of Otani who I don't think you can fully count in that in that
- 42:58ballgame. Spencer Strider. H taking Spencer Strider at number ten. And I
- 43:05will caveat this that if this if your if your league doesn't have an Indians
- 43:08cap I'd probably knock him down a little bit there, but the strikeout rate
- 43:15is just unbeatable. He's actually had had some uh some unlucky uh plays this
- 43:22year. If if I uh and I'm not not looking at his page,
- 43:25his fancraft page and see what his baby or anything like that, just from
- 43:29watching him pitch, it seems like every time that he's uh about to,
- 43:34you know, reel off a crazy game of seven Indians thirteen k's and get
- 43:38the win, that there's like a blue pit, or he walks a guy,
- 43:44there's a blue pit. Somebody misplays something and a guy steals a base
- 43:46and scores, like it's some weird scenario that like only the perfect scenario.
- 43:52The guy's scores and that happens like twice, and all of a sudden,
- 43:54like man, he can gave up to two and he only went six because
- 43:57he had a few extra pitches and or there's a few errors and so then
- 44:00he didn't goes deep in the game, so they had to get a few
- 44:01extra outs, you know. So but like I said, I think Spencer
- 44:07Strutgers the one picture outside of Otani that I feel comfortable taking them the first
- 44:12round. And I think especially if you have an Indians cap where you're really
- 44:15trying to stack up those strikeouts to finish it higher than the rest of the
- 44:20league in that category, I think he's kind of a must have if that's
- 44:22part of your strategy. I totally agree. I think he's the only picture
- 44:29I had taken the first round and so other than Otani obviously, and I
- 44:34think part of it is because the floor on the strikeouts is so great.
- 44:37Even when he's not at his sharpest on the mound, I'll just throw out
- 44:42like that that Doud against the Pirates that happened the other week where he went
- 44:46two and two thirds with three k's and gave up six But even when he's
- 44:52like bad, So he had like a game against the Mets in June where
- 44:54he had four innings and gave up eight earned, but he's still had eight
- 44:59ks. There was an outing where he was bad against the White Sox of
- 45:05all teams in last month, where he went six innings, gave up five
- 45:08earned ten k's, an outing last month against Arizona four earned in six innings,
- 45:16thirteen ks. So like that is crazy that like he can still put
- 45:22up like these double digit cas for you even when he is having a little
- 45:25bit of an off day and the homer is really the home run has really
- 45:30been biting him this year. So I think like that is something he could
- 45:34work on in the off season, and if he does, then look out.
- 45:38Yeah. And I think he's part of the reason I think it's interesting
- 45:42is it go and I go back number of years ago from a positional perspective,
- 45:46is that I think at this point he's actually eleviyed him so far past
- 45:50the number two guy that this distinct advantage of owning I go back a number
- 45:53of years ago with a catcher when a JTL real Muto was like a cheat
- 45:58code at catcher because he was so far and above the next catcher and that
- 46:00didn't last for that long. But when you had him, it's it's just
- 46:05like you were getting so much production out of the position that nobody else did.
- 46:08They just gave you so many other options. So I think there's a
- 46:10degree of that with Spencer Strider next year, with Shane McClanahan going down with
- 46:15Tommy John, you know, there's not there's not really a second guy right
- 46:20there. With Surezer and Verlander kind of showing showing their age a little bit,
- 46:24that second guy is is a step below where Spencer Strider is, and
- 46:30I think, you know, I'm he might be only the picture I'm taking
- 46:31the first two rounds. Uh yeah, I mean I'm kind of looking at
- 46:37my We can actually discuss a little bit of like our remaining lists after this,
- 46:42just to like go through if you get guys. But I would agree.
- 46:45I have another picture that I would take in the second round, but
- 46:47it's not a starter, and so I'm gonna take my six pick right here.
- 46:54There's still one left in my top ten, so I'm taking him,
- 46:58and that is Corporn Carroll from the Diamondbacks. The stats have been incredible this
- 47:05year. It's going to be a pretty breezy Rookie of the Year campaign.
- 47:08I think that he's on pace to go about twenty five five hit two seventy
- 47:15and I mean the runs and the RBI could be you know, they leave
- 47:21a little bit to be desired, but he's still going to be about one
- 47:22hundred runs and somewhere around like eighty RBI when it's all kind of wrapped up
- 47:27by the end of the season, and that'll be his age twenty two season.
- 47:30That sky is really the limit from there, so I think, especially
- 47:35as he's getting more comfortable with his stroke, you know, he could start
- 47:38pushing maybe thirty homers, But I don't know if there's going to be too
- 47:42much more beyond that. I do think that, like there's a chance that
- 47:45he could push the stolen bases up next year, but even still, like,
- 47:47I'm not going to be too greedy when a guy is going, you
- 47:51know, twenty five forty five and is putting up seventy combined stolen bases and
- 47:57RBI or stone bases and home runs along with a pre solid batting average,
- 48:01especially at a spot like the outfield, it becomes hard to fill in all
- 48:05those outfield spots. So if you can fill it in in your first round
- 48:08and kind of have a decent floor with Corborn Carroll, That's where I'm going.
- 48:14I don't I will not argue with this one at all. He was
- 48:16actually the guy that I was debating with Spencer Strider at the last pick.
- 48:20He's the guy actually leap frogged in on my list just because I wanted to
- 48:24grab that that picture. And so yeah, I'm right there with you with
- 48:29with Carol, I agree, I don't know that he has a whole lot
- 48:31left in tank. Maybe there's a little bit more speed that can be had
- 48:34there. The only thing it would be interesting is if the Diamebacks continue to
- 48:37build around him. That's I think something that actually could could do something for
- 48:40him, because it feels it seems like the diame Backs now there they've got
- 48:44a taste of winning. Depends, you know, we'll see where they actually
- 48:47end up in the season, but it seems like they were becoming a little
- 48:50bit more aggressive with looking to make moves, bring in and build around a
- 48:52guy like Carol and so I could see those those counting staffs jumping up as
- 48:58as things progress. I too hope he settles in the middle of the order
- 49:04he's been earlier in the season. He was kind of that number three hitter.
- 49:07Seems like he's been bouncing around the number two, number one bet and
- 49:10better ninth the other day. I definitely look to see those pinch hit appearance
- 49:15or or what it was. But you know it, I think that if
- 49:22he ends up settling his number three or the number four hitter, those RBIs
- 49:25jump up as well, and then he's he's looking like a the true all
- 49:30Star. Okay, his his betting ninth was a pinch hit up here,
- 49:31and so I feel better now it was last night, and I mean I
- 49:35feel good about that. The Diamondbacks they still have, Christian Walker could tell
- 49:38Mark Tay's around for a long time. Jordan Lawler should be up next year,
- 49:43and so all they need to maybe do is to add another power bat.
- 49:46And yep, even then, like they Lorda Scurriel has been okay,
- 49:52but like that's if you're upgrading on Lorda Scoriell doesn't take too much exactly.
- 49:59So yep, I'm liking where you're at with with Corbyn Carroll there, So
- 50:02all right to to wrap it up, last official pick, last official pick,
- 50:07and I'm gonna I'm gonna grab a guy that I think has fallen from
- 50:10a little bit of graces this year. And I think, you know,
- 50:14he was a guy that was considered with the top overall pick going into this
- 50:17season, and he, rightfully Stow has not turned the right for that consideration
- 50:22next year. But I'm gonna go with Trey Turner. And in this position,
- 50:28I think you know, Trey Turner definitely has had a a rough season,
- 50:32if you if you want, if you want to call it that,
- 50:35maybe certain fans out there and Philadelphia might call it something else, but he's
- 50:43he's had a little bit of a stuff go. He's definitely picks it up
- 50:45as a late but you know, he's only hitting two fifty one. He's
- 50:51uh, you know, he's probably got a good shot at a twenty twenty
- 50:53season, you know, maybe twenty thirty if he picks it up really at
- 50:58the end of the season here. But you know, this is a guy
- 51:00that's coming off of you know, four seasons in a rowbotting two ninety eight
- 51:05or better. You know, Perennial thirty or forty stolen bases, was you
- 51:10know, probably mid to low twenties home runs. He has a great potential
- 51:16and that Phillies lineup can hit. Uh, So you know he's going to
- 51:21score runs and bunches. And I think that he did have a down year.
- 51:27Uh, he's looked a little bit lost at the plate to a degree,
- 51:30but like I said, he seems to have kind of picked things up
- 51:34as the season's gone along. And he's one of those guys that he's always
- 51:38been a professional hitter. So I think that there's enough floor here with enough
- 51:44ceiling that I feel comfortable the end of that first round, especially if you're
- 51:49you're staking a back to pick up somebody else that can that can hold him
- 51:52up. But I think that's worth the risks. So I like Trey Turner
- 51:55right at the end of that first round, and I don't think I'm gonna
- 52:00be disappointed, all right, well, I mean, actually I'm gonna have
- 52:05to come in and disagree in terms of like the way you did with Judge
- 52:08for me that like, I think Turner belongs a little bit more towards the
- 52:14back into the second round, maybe for next year, just because his stack
- 52:19cast page is not good, Like he's always struggled really making high quality of
- 52:25contact, and you can see that with his barrel rates and hard hit rates
- 52:30are very middling at seven point one percent and forty point eight percent. They're
- 52:37just when you're having a guy that's like getting on the other side of thirty.
- 52:43And his sprint speed is still amazing, it's still in the ninety nine
- 52:46percentile, but he's clearly already running less even though the rest of the league
- 52:51is running war. And so if he's not giving me all that extra value
- 52:55in the stolen basis, I don't think he's got the power in his bat
- 52:59to be to make up for it, and so the nice thing about him
- 53:04in the past has always been like he was a lock for forty stolen bases
- 53:07or somewhere in that range. And so if he's only going to give me
- 53:10thirty stolen bases and it's only going to come with twenty ish homers, I'm
- 53:15a little bit scared about kind of how that plays out. I think the
- 53:19k rate bumped up this year because he is just pushing and trying to live
- 53:24up to that contract he's signed to Philadelphia. But he's a great player.
- 53:29I like him, but I think I like him a little bit more towards
- 53:31the back of the second round, because honestly, he's not even in the
- 53:35list of I've made like eighteen to kind of go through this draft, and
- 53:39he didn't make that top eighteen. Well, I have to then commisserate with
- 53:44you because I told told you I had nineteen. Guess who number nineteen on
- 53:47my list is Aaron Judge. Yes, so I think we can align that
- 53:53we're we differ on some of the values. The one thing about Turner that
- 53:59the floor and the speed And if you're probably you've probably already seen it,
- 54:01but how many times he's been caught stealing this year twenty two steals? How
- 54:08many how many attempts has he made out for twenty two steals? Guessing he's
- 54:13maybe being only been caught twice. He has not been caught. He hasn't
- 54:16He has not been caught this season, And I think, to me,
- 54:22there's it's part of it's flowing over from his uh discomfort of the plate he's
- 54:25pressing, you know, and so I think that there's something to that where
- 54:30he can run more and he should be running more, but that confidence hasn't
- 54:34been there. Like I said, I think he has picked it up a
- 54:37little bit as of late, and he's had a little a few a few
- 54:39games here and there. It looks like the trade turner that they that they
- 54:43paid for. But I have to agree that there is uh is a little
- 54:47bit higher risk with that pick. But I'm only comfortable doing it at the
- 54:52end of the first round because I know I got thirteen coming back on the
- 54:54on the other side most likely, And so I'm I'm I'm I'm grabbing if
- 54:59I grabbed trade there, uh the guy I'm taking on the other side,
- 55:04Juan Soto, I'm taking another guy that can really I feel confident, high
- 55:08high ceiling, but very much a good floor. So anyway, was there
- 55:14anybody in your top twelve that didn't get drafted? Yes, since having judged
- 55:21there at number nineteen for member twelve, okay, yeah, yeah, my
- 55:24number twelve guy was Jose Ramirez. Okay, And so Jose Ramirez is definitely
- 55:31one that's he's not a little bit of an off year, but still the
- 55:35numbers are pretty gush darn strong. And so when you talk about a guy
- 55:38with a strong floors, it's gonna feel pretty much the whole stat sheet not
- 55:42really hurt you anywhere. I really liked him that value late in the first
- 55:46round. And he's also the kind of guy that you know, I think
- 55:51gets any protection, which I don't know that he's going to in in Cleveland,
- 55:54but if he has any protection, you know, he can put up
- 55:58some some crazy numbers if he just gets a little lucky or just has you
- 56:00know, a really good seasons. He's that kind of guy that can really
- 56:05go off and you wouldn't really be surprised about it. So yeah, how
- 56:07about how about you clearly you have a one or two that we we didn't
- 56:12hit on him. Well, yeah, I'll on Jose Ramirez. He was
- 56:14fifteenth for me, so right in the same range. And I think another
- 56:16thing with him is third base is gonna be a black hole again that it
- 56:22might not be a bad idea that if you've got especially on a on a
- 56:25one two turn, to take him there so that you have third base sorted
- 56:30out, you don't have to worry about it. The twelfth person I had
- 56:34on my board was Matt Olsen. Actually, he's been really incredible the past
- 56:37couple of years, and we espoused all of his virtues last week when we're
- 56:42talking about tops chrome m vps. Yeah for play hitting in that lineup and
- 56:49you want to talk about floor for power. That dude plays day in day
- 56:53out, and he's almost kind of like if you're worried about Judge and his
- 56:59ability to stay on the field and like hit for that power, you don't
- 57:01have that with Olson. And it's going to be probably a pretty easy mid
- 57:05forty tomers with one hundred and twenty rbi one hundred, one hundred runs.
- 57:09The batting average will fluctuate, but he's turned into such a better hitter that
- 57:15I'm I'm really not worried about him bodying out bottoming out my bidding average the
- 57:20way that I think I used to with Mandelson. He's really matured into a
- 57:22really great hitter. Yeah, and I'm not going to disagree with you.
- 57:27He was my fifteenth hitter. Olson was, so he was he was right
- 57:30there in the mix, and you know, the only the guys that he
- 57:34was sitting behind. I had Bryce Harper rebound there because I think that he
- 57:38has a potential to rebound, you know, getting back full, healthy,
- 57:43off season everything for him. And then Juan Soto, I just can't.
- 57:46I can't push him much further down. Yeah, just the unbelievable hitter that
- 57:52he is now he you know, and really at that at some point and
- 57:57that's really I think where where my my rankings start to to drop off is
- 58:00the power just disappears, and then you start to get what I consider the
- 58:04professional hitters, and that's where you're hitting the Soto, Olson, You're don
- 58:07you know, those kind of guys that are just unbelievable. And so yeah,
- 58:13I have nothing nothing against the Matt Olsen pick. I can't see him
- 58:16squeezing the first round for me, just because I think in that first round
- 58:21I want speed unless I'm taking Spencer Strider, But even then, I think
- 58:25it's gonna be he's gonna be later in that in that first round, just
- 58:28like where where he was taken. So anybody else on your list that that
- 58:30you want to shout out on, Yeah, And so I mean I think
- 58:34a couple of these guys will help with that speed if you do take somebody
- 58:37like a Matt Olson or a Freeman and you're kind of getting into second round.
- 58:43So other guys I kind of had into consideration for the back end of
- 58:45the first round. Ozzie Albis, He's he's a little bit of like Trade
- 58:52Turner in terms of like the bad profile stuff is not great, but like
- 58:57again, just produces in that Atlanta lineup. Finds a way to run,
- 59:00finds a way to hit for power, really takes advantage of his opportunities,
- 59:06comes out a premium position at second plate, a second base. So that's
- 59:08great Police Robert, if you want to talk, if you want to talk
- 59:15risk louse, Robert Is. It doesn't get bigger than that. You can
- 59:19see what he can do with the healthy season this year and if he can
- 59:22stay healthy again next year. I don't care how terrible the White Sox lineup
- 59:28is LuSE. Robert is so supreme at the way that he hits the ball
- 59:31with power we saw in the derby, and he's going to run that like
- 59:36he could produce first round value again the way he is this year. And
- 59:40then you mentioned a couple of the other guys You're don Juan Soto kind of
- 59:45hanging around there, but without the stolen bases, I don't I can't push
- 59:47him into the first round, and they don't hit for as much power as
- 59:51Olson. The one guy that I think could sneak in from a pitching standpoint
- 59:58is Felix spot Tista. Obviously, we talked about it the other week when
- 1:00:04I brought him up for AlSi young, but like I mean, he's starting
- 1:00:08to get to even with Josh Haider's crazy season of having a sub one Earra
- 1:00:13and sub one whip, like Felix Bautista is pushing himself into new echelons as
- 1:00:17a reliever. That the volume that he's giving you two at those rates is
- 1:00:22crazy. It's a little bit how like Andrew Miller used to be really valuable
- 1:00:28even without the saves because the ratio work from Earra, whip and K nine
- 1:00:32were just so elite that Felix Bautista is starting to push that as well.
- 1:00:37I would like if I had a pick, you know, in a twelve
- 1:00:40teamer and I was able to do like a something like let's say Kyle Tucker
- 1:00:46dropped to like that twelfth pick, and you could do like a Kyle Tucker
- 1:00:50Felix Bautista one two. That's really tempting. Yeah, I think the and
- 1:00:55I'm never gonna be one. I don't think. The earliest I've ever taking
- 1:00:59reliever is like the seventh round. It's a personal vendetta about against relievers.
- 1:01:05And you've seen some of the trades I've met made the past week. Will
- 1:01:07Smith is clearly in my crosshairs of trading for in a league that I'm going
- 1:01:14for the championship, and he has done a great job at torpedoing everything I'm
- 1:01:20trying to do. But the only one other one that uh I really I
- 1:01:24really struggle with and he made my list, but I think it's just out
- 1:01:28of He's got to be on the list somewhere and I don't know what to
- 1:01:30do with him. Next year is Mike Trout, And you know I had
- 1:01:35him on my list round seventeen. I feel like that actually might still be
- 1:01:38too high for Trout. You know, he came back, he's back in
- 1:01:44the lineup, uh, just today, and so it'll be interesting to see
- 1:01:49how he finishes up the season. Is he healthy, is he running?
- 1:01:52I mean, his numbers, you know, they have dropped off for Mike
- 1:01:57Trout, but he still has the best exible he's had in the last three
- 1:02:00years. You know, he's still got a you know, hard hit rate
- 1:02:07of fifty two percent. The stack cast looks amazing, Like the guy can
- 1:02:12still hit, you know, he's just not running. And so I kind
- 1:02:15of put him that professional hitter category with you know, the Ordans of the
- 1:02:19world. I think that he's the concern is up being the injuries. Has
- 1:02:24it all kind of caught up to him? And so what's the what's the
- 1:02:28discount rate that you get for a guy like Trout? So I'm be very
- 1:02:32interested that I would not be surprised if he slipped into the third round in
- 1:02:36drafts next year, and that just feels wrong. No, I wouldn't be
- 1:02:40surprised either, because what's that lineup in Anaheim gonna look like around him?
- 1:02:45And it's gonna be really really bad, I think. And so I mean
- 1:02:49Taylor Warre can protect you. Yeah, and Noah Shanowell and Zach Meadow and
- 1:02:54whoever else they're twenty twenty four first round pick is Yeah, I feel for
- 1:03:00the guy at this point. Yeah. I did want to bring up there
- 1:03:05is one one dude in the raz Ball Player Raider to date that's top ten
- 1:03:09that we haven't talked about it at all, and that's a Dullas Garcia.
- 1:03:14Where where would a Dallas Garcia be in this talk for you? Because by
- 1:03:19the Player Raider, I think he's gonna be in conversations next year around the
- 1:03:24one two turn possibly that it's gonna be really hard to seeing him making it
- 1:03:30out of the second round. I think in a lot of drafts. Yeah,
- 1:03:34I think Adallas is one of those guys that really he kind of I
- 1:03:38don't think it's a bad name. It's not going to be the right term,
- 1:03:42but because of his strikeout profile, the way he kind of burst onto
- 1:03:45the scene and then he did kind of trail off a little bit, he
- 1:03:49did have some folks definitely looking at him like I don't know if it's real,
- 1:03:52but just looking at the top one hundred rankings were just the rest of
- 1:03:58the season, I have a Dallas Carcia a sixteen for all hitters, and
- 1:04:01so he was a guy that I thought about putting there. He probably would
- 1:04:05have been right in the middle of that second round. I don't see him
- 1:04:10getting out of the second round because he is one of those guys at that
- 1:04:13point that can still give you a little bit of speed. He's gonna be
- 1:04:16a drain on the average, maybe a drain, but he's he's not going
- 1:04:20to boost you up by any means on that that average. He's been better
- 1:04:26uh less you know this year. But I do like a Dallas Garcia,
- 1:04:31other guys that I think people will talk about. It's gonna be like Corey
- 1:04:35Seeger, Vladimir Gario Junior. I think those guys are gonna get some some
- 1:04:41looks. I think Pete Alonzo is gonna get talked about up there. I
- 1:04:44would I don't buy it. I'm not a Pete Alonzo guy by by any
- 1:04:47means. But and then honestly, Christian Yellich, I think Mike get some
- 1:04:54second round consideration. He definitely has had a resurgence that people just aren't talking
- 1:04:59about out So, uh, there's there's a lot of value and I think
- 1:05:03that We're gonna see a lot of a lot of variety in uh at the
- 1:05:09end of the first round through maybe like the middle of the or early third,
- 1:05:13where it's just gonna be kind of wild west of who goes where.
- 1:05:15But I'm gonna I'm grabbing as much speed and guys that won't d drain my
- 1:05:23average in that in that range. Clearly, I'm not going guys that are
- 1:05:28only speed, but I'm not drafting the hitter that doesn't steal some basses.
- 1:05:32And then first few rounds next year, Yeah, I think that makes sense,
- 1:05:35especially given how hard it has been to fill out stolen bases this year,
- 1:05:41that with the just the guide increase, there's so many guys that,
- 1:05:45especially on back ends of rosters. Your estuary rubises, you're really castro's.
- 1:05:51You're all speed dudes who can really make a difference for some teams, and
- 1:05:56so trying to balance that out, I would I'm I'm with you that,
- 1:06:00Like, there are a couple of first basemen that we talked about here that
- 1:06:03I really liked because just they give you the batting average boost that you need
- 1:06:08or the huge power just block of home runs that you want. But you've
- 1:06:14got to be hitting stolen bases pretty hard within you know, the first third
- 1:06:18of your draft. Yeah, I agree. I think the the only other
- 1:06:25guy that I think, you know, I might be able to make a
- 1:06:27case for, and he's had I'm would say he's slightly more down down the
- 1:06:31season, and he's probably a third round next year. Marcus Simeon. I
- 1:06:35think he's just doesn't get the respect he deserves. And you know, he's
- 1:06:41I have to look to see where he's at in his every other seasons and
- 1:06:44all Star season type of guy. So I'm not sure. I think he's
- 1:06:46slowly even that out over the years. But there's definitely a lot of other
- 1:06:51guys that we could go on and on about all night. But hey,
- 1:06:56I think that we had a very successful draft. We only had really two
- 1:07:00disagreements within that draft. So I think that that ship goes to show the
- 1:07:04first round. I was not gonna say pretty locked in, but you know,
- 1:07:09there's a little shuffling to do, but at least at this point that's
- 1:07:13gonna we're gonna see some consistency on who those guys are. The top ten
- 1:07:16or so, are are pretty pretty pretty locked in? Yeah, I agree,
- 1:07:21So we're gonna take another break, and then we'll be back with some
- 1:07:25of our favorite cards of some of these players. So we'll go into guys
- 1:07:29that we drafted and seeing you know, what cards might hold some value going
- 1:07:32into the future, and especially if you're trying to stash away some for this
- 1:07:36offseason to be able to bust back out for when the markets kind of jumped
- 1:07:42back up in the spring. We'll have a few suggestions for you as well
- 1:07:45as I think just some favorites, Like I know, for some of my
- 1:07:47guys, I'm gonna end up picking some that I just really enjoy the card.
- 1:07:51So we'll be back with that stick around, all right, Welcome back,
- 1:08:15everybody. We're gonna go now through the list of cards that we really
- 1:08:19like from our first round picks, and just to mix it up, we're
- 1:08:23gonna go in reverse order. So if you recall, our twelfth draft pick
- 1:08:29of the draft just a few minutes ago was trade Turner, and so Jeremy,
- 1:08:33I'll let you take over for Trade Turner saying which card you like and
- 1:08:40which one kind of stands out for you. And here in the cards section
- 1:08:44where categories and cards stay, all right, So jumping into tray Turner,
- 1:08:48when I look at trade. Turner doesn't have any really exciting like rookie cards
- 1:08:51or booming cars on something like that. But the card that sticks out to
- 1:08:56me for Tray Turner is coming off the World Baseball Classic here earlier this year,
- 1:09:00when he had just a fantastic Baseball Classic, which meant he was going
- 1:09:04to be fantastic for the twenty twenty three season, which has not transpired.
- 1:09:10They created one of those tops Now cards for him and it was the tops
- 1:09:14Now base relic. So it's the they actually make a relic out of the
- 1:09:17base from the tops Now games, and those were as hot as could be
- 1:09:23when they came out. I think they were like two hundred dollars or something
- 1:09:27like that. The problem with them is they took forever to ship. Yeah,
- 1:09:31so by the time they ship, like you bought him because you know,
- 1:09:33that's the car is gonna be so valuable because he's you know, all
- 1:09:36this pop pomp is a circumstance with the World Baseball Classic. And now I
- 1:09:42look at the prices of these things and people are like listening them on eBay
- 1:09:45for the price that it costs to get to buy the first place off tops
- 1:09:48Now. So basically you can get around two hundred dollars, probably cheaper with
- 1:09:53a best offer or something like that. But it's a really cool card and
- 1:09:57I think, you know, has some meaning just because it's coming from that
- 1:09:59crea is you World Baseball Classic some showdowns that he ran, And it's not
- 1:10:04a Phillies jersey, it's not a Dodger jersey, it's not a Nationals jersey.
- 1:10:08It's not even Tho his Pods jersey from the earlier his early days.
- 1:10:12It's a USA jersey. And so it's one of those that can transcend the
- 1:10:17team that he was on, and any collector can go after herself. Trey
- 1:10:21Turner for my first card of the reverse draft here, World Baseball Classic twenty
- 1:10:26twenty three tops now Bass Relic awesome, and I will I should have explained.
- 1:10:30I will leave links to this in the show notes for everybody, because
- 1:10:34obviously this is a good visual medium of looking at the cards, and we're
- 1:10:40famously an audio medium here in the podcast, so you will be able to
- 1:10:44pull up those if you go into the show description on wherever you're listening to
- 1:10:47this podcast. Also, fantastic pick. I was actually yeah, I mean
- 1:10:51that's because Trey Turner has bounced around so much, like he doesn't really have
- 1:10:58a team card that he sticks with, you know. So, man,
- 1:11:00that's a I'm excited for this draft because that's a great pick. I'm gonna
- 1:11:04go. So the eleventh pick in our fantasy draft was Corbyn Carroll, the
- 1:11:10Rookie of the Year candidate. So you can pick up his rookie card now
- 1:11:13if you find tops chrome on shelves and stuff. But I'm gonna go pretty
- 1:11:17basic with the first Bowman that he has from Bowman Draft Sapphire the Chrome edition,
- 1:11:26and so that card is from twenty nineteen. It's just a it's a
- 1:11:30really pretty card that like it's a it's Carol running in full sprint from second
- 1:11:34to third with the photoshopped on diamond backs jersey the way that Bowman likes to
- 1:11:40do. But the sparkle of a sapphire just looks fantastic, and it's a
- 1:11:45it's a relatively affordable card because the twenty nineteen set was pretty well printed,
- 1:11:49with Adlee Ruchman also being in that set. So you can get the raw
- 1:11:54version of this Carol card for somewhere between seventy five and eighty bucks and even
- 1:11:58a ten only goes somewhere in the one eighty range, so a pretty affordable
- 1:12:02first bowman sapphire. So I can't complain about that for somebody who's in the
- 1:12:09Rookie of the Year and if it wasn't for Kunia and MVP running. Yeah,
- 1:12:14I personally love Sapphire Cards one of my favorite sets. I've only been
- 1:12:18able to I think rip that once myself. It's not the cheapest rip to
- 1:12:23go through, but I love the Sapphire Cards. Definitely a first if you
- 1:12:28can get first sapphire, especially some of the slightly older sets like where Carol
- 1:12:32is so love that pick for Corbyn Carol there at eleven. Yeah, and
- 1:12:36I like it because the sapphire that year is more of like a rainbow shimmer
- 1:12:40sapphire. It's not like a straight blue sapphire that you see nowadays usually,
- 1:12:44so that just kind of adds to the magic, I think, as opposed
- 1:12:47to worrying about the blue looking a little weird with the Diamondbacks jersey. But
- 1:12:51Jeremy, I'll bounce it back to you for the third card. Now.
- 1:12:55It's the kind of count upwards and downwards. The tenth pick of our Fantasy
- 1:13:01Draft tenth pick was a Spencer Strider, and for since Spencer Strider, I
- 1:13:08am going with the Tops Rookie card. We're going with the twenty twenty two
- 1:13:12Top Series two Spencer Strider sp that's the one of of him batting. And
- 1:13:17as I was looking at Strider cards, it was a tough call because it
- 1:13:21either you had to find something that really displayed the mustache or something which really
- 1:13:28harkens back to Spencer Strider batting. Last opportunity for somebody batting and actually a
- 1:13:34picture of him actually doing that. So, you know, a unique card
- 1:13:39for what I would call a unique player. And just because pictures don't hit
- 1:13:43anymore, it's kind of a kind of one of the last few that you
- 1:13:45will see like that. Uh, pretty affordable cards something you can get for
- 1:13:49that sp for a for a raw card, we're talking probably seventy to ninety
- 1:13:56dollars, uh low one hundreds for you know a P say ten, So
- 1:14:00it's a pretty reachable card. But it is just kind of fun to see
- 1:14:04the picture batting in his unnatural element and you can still get a nice glimpse
- 1:14:10the facial hair. Yeah, that's great pick. I was gonna say it
- 1:14:13would have been tough to pick a good Spencer Strider card, and he does
- 1:14:15just look good in all of its pictures. I will say, yeah,
- 1:14:18it's it's just naturally comes. It's it's natural skill, natural good looks,
- 1:14:23ver s once or Strider. Yeah. So how about you. I think
- 1:14:26we're to reverse number nine? Will that be Aaron Judge? Yep, it
- 1:14:30is and not so not so easy counting down and up at the same time.
- 1:14:34I can't count on a regular day. Yeah, And so Aaron Judge,
- 1:14:39I'm gonna go with a version of his twenty seventeen Taps Chrome Ricky card.
- 1:14:44I really love the card. It's just it's turning into a bit of
- 1:14:46an iconic look with him jumping up against the wall and catching the ball that
- 1:14:53I think it's just going to be a really famous card because Yankees are really
- 1:14:57big in the collecting world, and you just see this card lot as pretty
- 1:15:00big cornerstones of people's pieces of PCs overall. So the variation I'm going with
- 1:15:08though, is the negative refractor. You know, I've got a little bit
- 1:15:11of a soft spot for the negative refractor, especially for white Sox cards,
- 1:15:15because the negative refractor, if you've never seen them, they're almost like a
- 1:15:19photo negative is what they're trying to emulate, and so what I love about
- 1:15:25it for white Sox cards is that the black and the white get reversed and
- 1:15:29it looks really funky. It happens a little bit with this Yankees card where
- 1:15:32the black and the white kind of subvert what you expect this card to look
- 1:15:38like. And I it's also got the rainbow shimmer from the refractor, so
- 1:15:44I really like it. I think it's a really sharp looking card. It's
- 1:15:46a really really rare card because these negative refractors are short print case hits,
- 1:15:53so if you're opening in a whole case of tops chrome, there was only
- 1:15:58one negative refractor the entire case, and who knows who it was from your
- 1:16:02set, So I don't know what the print run on them probably was because
- 1:16:06they weren't numbered. But the last sale of one happened in a weird sale
- 1:16:11in July, went for a round one hundred and twenty dollars and it was
- 1:16:15an eight and a half from BGS. I think the card is probably more
- 1:16:20like a two to three hundred dollar card, and I think it probably moved
- 1:16:25during the lull of Aaron Judge being on the injured list, so I mean,
- 1:16:29if you find it below two hundred, I would snatch it up because
- 1:16:32it's a pretty rare card and I think it'll be a pretty big piece of
- 1:16:36kind of any Aaron Judge PC or any Aaron Judge collector's desire list, because
- 1:16:43they aren't very many of them out there. Yeah, I think Aaron Judge
- 1:16:45is also one of the easier players to make a profit off of it if
- 1:16:48you want to. There's always a huge market in New York and he is
- 1:16:51one of the i'd consider the streakiest players from a card perspective, because he's
- 1:16:57hurt here and there, then he plays, and he's amazing here and there.
- 1:17:00The he's a hero. So the card market fluctuates quite a bit for
- 1:17:03Aaron Judge. And not to say that Yankees fans are a fair weather I
- 1:17:10did not say that, but there's always a market, we'll put it that
- 1:17:13way for for Aaron Judge, and it gets hot at times. So all
- 1:17:17right, Yeah, so probably probably the hardest one of all these to look
- 1:17:25for for me. Uh. Number eight overall was Kyle Tucker. I hate
- 1:17:31to say, but Kyle Tucker has like no exciting cards there. It was
- 1:17:36for me, it was between I think it had a twenty seventeen bowman,
- 1:17:40not even his first where he looked like he was pitching. Clearly I have
- 1:17:44something for players playing out of position, but I'm gonna go with his twenty
- 1:17:48nineteen tops Stadium Chrome rookie. Just a beautiful card. Uh, nothing else
- 1:17:55exciting about it. We're talking. This is like a five dollars card.
- 1:17:58You can probably pick it up for us, probably find a dollar been somewhere,
- 1:18:01but it's a beautiful card of him. What it looks to be diving
- 1:18:05into first space was a slide, so it's like he's been backpicked. So
- 1:18:10it's even kind of an unnatural like you know, you got the guy shooting
- 1:18:14from the dugout with his big big lens capturing this one. But it is
- 1:18:17a beautiful card, great colors, and I'm always a sucker Stadium Club chrome,
- 1:18:21So going with a five dollars Stadium Club Chrome Kyle Tucker rookie from twenty
- 1:18:27nineteen. And that's even I mean that's technically a short print as well,
- 1:18:31so that's a parallel short print like the chrome version. So that's crazy that
- 1:18:36that's only five dollars. That's a hard card to hit, but I do
- 1:18:40Agreek. Kyle Tucker does have boring cards and they're relatively cheap because he gets
- 1:18:45wrapped into that trash can scandal that happened down in Houston. But I think
- 1:18:50when it's all said and done, he's gonna be kind of in the Hall
- 1:18:54of very good and if he can really play until like he's forty something,
- 1:18:58he might push some pretty crazy number. So I've been trying to stash away
- 1:19:00some Kyle Tuckers because they're pretty affordable and there's only one place to go,
- 1:19:04and that's up. Yeah. I completely agree. He just there's not a
- 1:19:09you know, Ryan the Trout argument. At times, there's not He's not
- 1:19:11a big boisicious personality. He just doesn't showboat on the field. He just
- 1:19:15goes and does his job, which I personally appreciate and love that attitude.
- 1:19:19That's that I've been there before, I've done this before attitude. I love
- 1:19:24that and a players it kind of kind of shows you up in the opposite
- 1:19:27way of showboat. He's just like, I hit another homer off you what
- 1:19:30a big deal? I do this all the time, circle of bases and
- 1:19:33let's let's get on with life. I kind of love that that kind of
- 1:19:36nasty attitude. Whether I think that's whether Tucker is trying to do that or
- 1:19:41not. I kind of appreciate that. So, yeah, I'm with you,
- 1:19:43Kyle, Tucker is cheap. It's a nice fun collecting to your point,
- 1:19:46what's gonna go wrong with a fifty cent rookie card here and there?
- 1:19:49Yeah, and really terrible sake because on the opposite end is my number seven
- 1:19:56pick from the draft, the like show Booty, a show boatman of all
- 1:20:01baseball history, Fernando Tatis Junior, And you know I had to go with
- 1:20:05a weird one here. He does have a pretty big plethora of great rookie
- 1:20:10cards, I won't deny that, and lots of great short prints that have
- 1:20:14been buried in all the base sets. He just is a very photogenic guy.
- 1:20:19But my personal favorite Fernio Tatis Junior card is from his original Bowman set,
- 1:20:26so his Bowman first is in twenty sixteen Bowman. But I actually like
- 1:20:31the family tree card of him and his father. It's a dual Fernio Tatis
- 1:20:38Junior. Fernando Tatis card Junior is on the socks because it's before he got
- 1:20:45traded for James Shields. Tatis is on the Cardinals, so it's combining my
- 1:20:47two favorite teams. Beautiful card. I love it like no notes less than
- 1:20:53five dollars. It's a perfect card, perfect card. I'm not shocked you
- 1:20:58for Tatis in the white Sox uniform. I didn't, I was. I
- 1:21:00was guessing you're going for the first first auto, but hey, I see
- 1:21:03where you're going. You got the Fernando tattoos, Senior. We're talking to
- 1:21:08grand slams, and I mean the one thing he'll be remembered for, and
- 1:21:12then his son will be remembered for lots of weird things. It feels like
- 1:21:15so okay, all right, Europe with another really fun one. So you've
- 1:21:20got Julio Rodriguez next, tell us your favorite Julio card. Yep so at
- 1:21:26number six, Julio Rodriguez. I'm going with a rookie card again, not
- 1:21:30a surprise twenty twenty two tops update, uh super short print. It is
- 1:21:35the Julio Rodriguez Ichiro super super short print. And there's a ton of crazy
- 1:21:43cool Julio cards out there, autos, all kinds of things. There's nothing
- 1:21:47really special about this one. It's basic. It's basic stock card and it's
- 1:21:54just a matter of it's just Julio being patted on the back by each row
- 1:21:58kind of looks like they're, you know, coming in from the field together.
- 1:22:01So I think it's a it's a really cool card, and I you
- 1:22:06know, I think it's unique because of the relationship they have. The thing
- 1:22:12with this one is a little bit price here. What's the price of this
- 1:22:15spine? Yeah, when we're talking uh more of a base sorry, a
- 1:22:21raw, we're talking on the eight hundred dollar range. If you're talking something
- 1:22:26graded uh ten, you're probably talking fifteen hundred on something like this. So
- 1:22:30it is a nice card. It is not easy to find. And I
- 1:22:34think it's one of those because each of being a Hall of Famer and he
- 1:22:38is, it's gonna be one of those that you kind of look back on.
- 1:22:43Uh. And I'm not gonna steal any thunder later from you with hun
- 1:22:45you hopefully the bat down as sp s sp uh, that's you're gonna kind
- 1:22:49of think about as Oh man, that's one of those wish I had him
- 1:22:53rookie cards. So yeah, absolutely, And I think you went through all
- 1:22:57the reasons. It's hard. It's really hard to get There are lots of
- 1:23:00people who just collect Japanese players between like their MLB cards, and they're NPB
- 1:23:09cards, So that's another reason too. It just is a really the Venn
- 1:23:13diagram of people who want that card is very large, so that makes it
- 1:23:16very hard to get your hands on. It worked ven Diagram into a podcast
- 1:23:20and you're welcome. We can get that in. Yeah, all right,
- 1:23:26So I've got the next pick, which is the third pick in our draft,
- 1:23:30the oldest guy in our draft, so I had to throw it way
- 1:23:32back because he's got the oldest card. I think, well, Otani might
- 1:23:36technically from Japan, but Freddy Freeman is in the two thousand and seven Bowman
- 1:23:45Draft Picks and Prospects set from when he was a first round pick and was
- 1:23:49fresh out of high school, like seventeen, eighteen years old. I went
- 1:23:54with the gold version though, because I really liked the gold version of the
- 1:23:58Bowman cards. Like Bowman kind of, I'll be honest, sucked from like
- 1:24:02two thousand to twenty twelve, and I'm still not a huge Bowman guy,
- 1:24:06but like the design was like boring as all get out, But the one
- 1:24:12fun thing was that they all had gold parallels back in the day. The
- 1:24:15way that kind of tops Gold runs. But these weren't numbered back in the
- 1:24:19day, and so I do miss that. It's kind of I think with
- 1:24:23the sky blues are now for Bowman, but Gold was just way better looking.
- 1:24:28And you can't go wrong with teenage Freddie Freeman on this card. They
- 1:24:32were running about twenty bucks nowadays, so affordable card, fun card, and
- 1:24:36I think he's a future Hall of Famer, so it could be a pretty
- 1:24:40good investment. Yeah. I think Freeman kind of just a level of the
- 1:24:44Kyle Tucker category for not that exciting of cards, but I think that is
- 1:24:47a good pick. I love the Gold borders. Those are also so hard
- 1:24:51to find clean. I don't know if I've seen a Bowman from that year
- 1:24:58in Gold it doesn't have some dinged corners or some whiting on it. Yeah,
- 1:25:01especially some of those used to be thicker back in the day too.
- 1:25:04I will have to look to see if this one was thicker or not,
- 1:25:08but it's that would lead to more dinging as well, so I'll pass it
- 1:25:15back to you another fun guy. Yep. All right, we're getting into
- 1:25:17the top here, so that into the my my second pick, but top
- 1:25:23four, fourth pick overall. Bobby Witt Jr. You know, I had
- 1:25:28to go with the two twenty twenty bow and chrome blue refractor first auto of
- 1:25:35Bobby Witt. A few reasons for it. It's the color match for the
- 1:25:39Royals, that wonderful blue on blue just looks fantastic. And then the other
- 1:25:45piece was this was one of those cards for those of us that got back
- 1:25:48into the hobby in twenty twenty. It was like one of the big cards
- 1:25:53early on of the guys that you were chasing, and so everybody was buying
- 1:25:58and left and right. It was just where to overproduce them maybe a little
- 1:26:00bit, but being numbered still can hold his value. So that's a number
- 1:26:05out of one fifty. You know, those are hard to come by.
- 1:26:11So you're talking something that's a psa ten, probably about twenty five hundred dollars
- 1:26:15on that, something that's maybe a bgs nine and a half psa nine,
- 1:26:20probably talking about fifteen hundred on that. So even though Bobby Witz first have
- 1:26:26kind of come down in price because the like said, the overproduction to a
- 1:26:29degree, that is a beautiful refractor and it's gonna hold his value over time.
- 1:26:34Yeah, I'm actually surprised it's that low that. I mean, I
- 1:26:38think if he's getting some MVP down ballot MVP votes this year, we could
- 1:26:43see a bump there. Yeah, I think so, I think that he
- 1:26:46could get get a bump, and I think he deserves it. So all
- 1:26:50right, who do you got. We've got three guys left. I believe
- 1:26:55you have Mookie Betts. I do so he was the third overall pick.
- 1:27:00And I'm also going to go color match here. So Muki's rookie card is
- 1:27:03from twenty fourteen TOPS update. It's just a great shot of Mookie standing in
- 1:27:10the box getting ready to take a pitch that's coming in. And so I'm
- 1:27:15going with the color match the red foil variation. So the twenty fourteen TOPS
- 1:27:19sets had red foil parallels that function like the rainbow foil parallels due nowadays where
- 1:27:28they were an unnumbered short print, and so I'm not totally sure how many
- 1:27:31are out there. And this one is a little bit pricey because it does
- 1:27:35look great, like the foil on the front of the card is like a
- 1:27:41mini diamond pattern, so it's got a little bit of texture to it,
- 1:27:44just adds a little extra flare. So this card will run you three to
- 1:27:47four hundred bucks raw, so it fluctuates, and I think it'll just only
- 1:27:51keep going up because again, this is another dude on a Hall of Fame
- 1:27:56track, and it's just a really sharp card. A hard card to also
- 1:28:00find in really great condition, because the foil cards just sometimes don't get cut
- 1:28:05right and they'll flake and stuff. So if you find a really sharp one,
- 1:28:10I think I'd hold on to it because it's going to be really valuable
- 1:28:13in the future if you're looking for something a little cheaper. Though that's a
- 1:28:15color match of Mookie Bets. There's the Red Tops parallel from back in twenty
- 1:28:20fourteen as well, and so that one will go a little cheaper and you
- 1:28:25can kind of find prices all over the place, because again those will be
- 1:28:29in different conditions because when you have a red border, doesn't take much to
- 1:28:33for that border to get nicked and show the whiting underneath. Yeah, to
- 1:28:38me, I love the red border of that series, and being a Cardinals
- 1:28:42fan, that's a fun sets collecting the red as well. But I think
- 1:28:45with the Mookie Bets, if I'm if I'm picking that one, I'm I'm
- 1:28:47looking for like a low grade, so hopefully centered and hopefully the damage is
- 1:28:51on the back to be to be able to pick that one up, So
- 1:28:56yeah, I do. The red foils are very like a low key great
- 1:29:00card if you're looking for color matches on. One of my favorite cards was
- 1:29:03from that set. It's an AJ Pierzynski Cardinals red foil that I have and
- 1:29:08it's just really funny because it's like from the half season that Aj Persinski was
- 1:29:11on the Cardinals. Yeah, I think it's like, now I look like
- 1:29:14John Lester Cards one of the Cardinals. He just doesn't feel right. Aj
- 1:29:15Persinski on the Cardinals cardin doesn't feel right. So no, not at all.
- 1:29:20So okay, I'm going to bounce it back to you for who was
- 1:29:24your number one overall pick, but it was number two overall in our draft
- 1:29:28to show Heyotani. Yeah, so show Heyotani. Probably the most fun card
- 1:29:31of all the ones that I picked out here, and probably not a surprise
- 1:29:35because he is super collectible. I'm going with a rare one twenty eighteen Bowman
- 1:29:41Chrome Rookie Autographs blue refractor with the Kanji signature. There's only known to be
- 1:29:47one of these cards that exist, so for those that don't know the kind
- 1:29:53of the backstory of this one. Otani doesn't have a first bowman, you
- 1:29:58know, kind of he has a first uh. First addition, I camera
- 1:30:01what was called over in the BBM in the Japanese League, so he kind
- 1:30:05of has his first over the Japanese, but he didn't have a first bowman,
- 1:30:09so his his only bowman is in the rookie is this first one over
- 1:30:15in the United States? And UH in a break back in twenty eighteen,
- 1:30:18somebody pulled this one out in the Blue Refractor and he signed it in kanji
- 1:30:24versus you know, in script, and it is the only one known that's
- 1:30:31ever been pulled of that he has signed other cards in kanji. And I
- 1:30:36think I was looking and there was one of those his Rookie Exquisite autographs,
- 1:30:42which is a little bit more popular basketball cards that he UH signed and sold
- 1:30:46earlier this year for fifty one thousand dollars. And so I don't know if
- 1:30:53this one's ever sold. I've not been able to find something, but I
- 1:30:56have to think, being you know, his Rookie of one of the most
- 1:31:00popular cards that he has out there number to one fifty, this thing's got
- 1:31:05to be easy six figures right now. If beyond, way beyond there.
- 1:31:11So it is a beautiful card and just that very unique signature, and I
- 1:31:15don't you know, Tops has never comment on it, you know, was
- 1:31:19it his choice just to sign one of those? We don't know. Is
- 1:31:23there more out there? It's just makes an incredibly rare, cool card that
- 1:31:29some lucky collector got and hopefully they held on to it. Probably not,
- 1:31:33because I mean we all everybody's selling everything. But I love that card is
- 1:31:40a crazy one with a crazy story. Yeah, I agree, great pick.
- 1:31:44I do think that that is gonna be above the million dollar mark easy
- 1:31:47if it where ever to move, just because I mean, even just like
- 1:31:51the orange versions of that card are pushing north of fifty k now and really
- 1:31:58skyrocketing towards one hundred k. That everything Otani is through the roof that,
- 1:32:03I mean, it's pretty evident why he's probably the greatest baseball player that ever
- 1:32:09has lived, just being able to do both things that like he might not
- 1:32:14put up like the longevity in numbers of Baby Bruth, but you can't deny
- 1:32:16that, like in a single season, he's the greatest player that ever lived.
- 1:32:20So it's gonna be a huge piece of everybody's collection is having Otani rookies,
- 1:32:27and there's lots of them, but they all constantly just kind of are
- 1:32:31always in demand. Yeah, and due to your point, just the the
- 1:32:36regular signature otani that they're selling for almost thirty thousand dollars, just the regular
- 1:32:43signature and the Kanji signature kind of makes it a one of one, yeah
- 1:32:47to a degree. And I would argue maybe more sought after than than the
- 1:32:53one of one. So to your point, I can't imagine if that if
- 1:32:57that thing goes up, well, what it could fetch. It's it would
- 1:33:00be life changing for anybody. Yeah, And he doesn't sign in kanji.
- 1:33:04And he even like he switched his signature just a couple of years ago from
- 1:33:10when he's signing cards, so cards that are dated before like twenty twenty one
- 1:33:14are also more valuable of his signature, just because he switched his signature just
- 1:33:19to be able to sign things faster, I think. And you'll see I
- 1:33:24see sometimes like on Reddit and stuff, like some of his kanji cards come
- 1:33:28up because people get like in personados and like you'll just see like tops gallery
- 1:33:33rookie cards with kanji's on them, and like move man, they're just gorgeous.
- 1:33:39Yeah, I think the most common Kanji was with his up project Goodwin
- 1:33:45the Gutas Has which those I mean, they're just terribly ugly cards and they
- 1:33:51sell for like twenty grand. So yeah, it's so anyway, all right,
- 1:33:57let's get to number one overall. Pick Ronald Lacuna Junior, and you
- 1:34:01have a plus or to pick from from here. So I'm curious where you're
- 1:34:04gonna go with this one. Yeah, it took me a long time to
- 1:34:08like find the picture of this one that I wanted on TCDB, which is
- 1:34:12Trading card database, because there's so many rookie cards of his. But I'm
- 1:34:16gonna go with the twenty eighteen Top Series two short print. It's classic,
- 1:34:23the Ronald Lacuna back down. I think it's the Ken Griffey junior upper deck
- 1:34:28card of this generation, if not rare, because it is a short print.
- 1:34:32And actually, I thought you might pick this card for Bobby Wit.
- 1:34:35Bobby Witt had a card like this in twenty twenty two Top Series two and
- 1:34:41Soda Tulio where they put in short print parallels of just really hot rookies,
- 1:34:46And so Ronald Kunia is base rookie card is actually in twenty eighteen Tops Update,
- 1:34:53but this short print comes out of the twenty eighteen Top Series two,
- 1:34:57so that makes it error. And it's just funny because his normal base rookie
- 1:35:03card from Update is a photo from the same swing. It's just the bats
- 1:35:09in a different position. So the bat down version where the bat head is
- 1:35:14kind of like down by his butt, is the one that's worth more money.
- 1:35:17It's running around three hundred to three fifty raw right now, and I
- 1:35:21think a lot like these other cards that we've been talking about, if he
- 1:35:27pulls off this MVP, that thing's only going to go further through the roof.
- 1:35:30So I think it's height. Honestly, it was trading out more.
- 1:35:34It's probably more than the four hundred to five hundred range, and I think
- 1:35:38you'll probably go back there kind of at the end of the season if he
- 1:35:41does win that MVP. Yeah, and I love that pick. And I'm
- 1:35:45gonna say I didn't notice since I was I was just looking at that,
- 1:35:47but you said, you know, it's basically the same picture on both cards,
- 1:35:51just a different point in the swing. Did you realize it's the exact
- 1:35:54same swing, Like yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, the same
- 1:35:59guys in the stands the same like it is literally the same swing that they
- 1:36:03took two pictures in and one's the base, one's the sp and I think
- 1:36:06that's just the coolest thing. So yeah, I think that's a great pick
- 1:36:10for for a Kunia there. And you're right. It's when you can say
- 1:36:14kun you a bat down and everybody knows which cards you're talking about. That's
- 1:36:17exactly means is iconic to a degree. So and great, great pick if
- 1:36:21you're looking for a cheaper version of this the holiday version from twenty eighteen,
- 1:36:26the twenty eighteen Tops Holiday uses the back down photo, but it has the
- 1:36:30holiday snowflakes on it, and so that one will run you, I don't
- 1:36:33know somewhere between five to fifteen. You can haggle for that one at card
- 1:36:38shows or try to win a cheap eBay eBay auction. And so if you
- 1:36:43want the flavor of the back down card but you don't want to pay the
- 1:36:45full freight, the holiday version is the way to go. It's it's got
- 1:36:49the goopy snowflakes, but it still has the bat down photo. Don't you
- 1:36:54love Tops? So they can just take such a cool card and they're like
- 1:36:56and we're gonna put snowflakes on it? Would I would? It would be
- 1:37:00great if we could interview the person who designed some of the holiday set stuff,
- 1:37:03because like they've got to be just the goopiest dude or woman, I
- 1:37:09mean, the goopiest person. So we're just gonna we're gonna take the best
- 1:37:12bet and we're gonna wrap it in the at least like a barber shop style,
- 1:37:16rapping them with the red and the white, or we're gonna put a
- 1:37:19Santa hat on Pete Alonzo. Right, It's just like that guy's gonna have
- 1:37:25the most fun jobs, Like how can we look make uh uh, you
- 1:37:28know Won Soto look funny with Santa's belt, Like it's like it's not even
- 1:37:32good photoshop. It's like more photo shops. It's the purpose though. It's
- 1:37:38so funny. And uh yeah, speaking of I just saw that I'm watching
- 1:37:42a MLB network right now. My boy Aaron Judge three home runs tonight,
- 1:37:45so blasting his way into the first round. I never thought i'd be an
- 1:37:48Aaron Judge. Stan, you're trying to prove me wrong still yea, but
