Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Vincent McAviney: UK Correspondent on Ukraine, UK riots
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Our UK europe correspondent is Vincent Mekavinni. He's with US
- 0:03Speaker 1: live this morning. A state of emergency has been declared
- 0:06Speaker 1: in the Kursk region in Russia. Vincent, Yes, that's right.
- 0:10Speaker 2: This is a surprise attack that the Ukrainians have mounted.
- 0:15Speaker 2: We think about a thousand or so Ukrainian troops, supported
- 0:19Speaker 2: by tanks and armored vehicles, crossed the border from Ukraine
- 0:23Speaker 2: into Russia on Tuesday, and some three thousand people have
- 0:28Speaker 2: been evacuated due to ongoing military altercations that have killed
- 0:33Speaker 2: at least for people. According to this Russian region's governor,
- 0:37Speaker 2: this has come as a surprise to the Kreminine. It
- 0:39Speaker 2: is highly embarrassing to Vladimir Pusin. Of course, two and
- 0:41Speaker 2: a half years ago he told his country that this
- 0:44Speaker 2: would be a limited, small operation in Ukraine, it would
- 0:46Speaker 2: be over quickly, and we're still here fighting and now
- 0:51Speaker 2: his own country is being invaded in a surprise attack
- 0:54Speaker 2: from Ukrainian troops. So quite a display of gumption and
- 0:59Speaker 2: ambition from the Ukraine. Uses.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Certainly, is Taylor swith these concerts that have been canceled,
- 1:04Speaker 1: sounds like these suspicted attackers were very serious.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yes, that's right. A nineteen year old who was arrested
- 1:12Speaker 2: on Wednesday apparently was planning to kill a large crowd
- 1:16Speaker 2: of people in a suicide attack at one of the
- 1:18Speaker 2: three concerts taking place in Vienna this weekend. Taylor Swift
- 1:22Speaker 2: was meant to be playing to one hundred and ninety
- 1:23Speaker 2: five thousand people over the three days. Those concerts have
- 1:26Speaker 2: all been canceled. Local media is reporting that the suspect
- 1:31Speaker 2: had stolen chemicals from his formal workplace, that he was
- 1:34Speaker 2: in the process of building a bomb, had materials to
- 1:38Speaker 2: that effect, that he was going to potentially use this device,
- 1:41Speaker 2: but also drive a car into crowds and potentially go
- 1:44Speaker 2: on a stabbing spree as well, so it would have
- 1:47Speaker 2: been horrific. It's very similar to the Ariana Grande attack
- 1:50Speaker 2: that took place here in the UK back in twenty seventeen,
- 1:53Speaker 2: where someone detonated a bomb at that concert venue as
- 1:58Speaker 2: young young woman and their parents were leaving, and would
- 2:02Speaker 2: have been a pretty horrific event. But so far, Taylor
- 2:05Speaker 2: Swift keeping the rest of the era's tok going. She'll
- 2:08Speaker 2: be back in the UK next week being Wembley. She's
- 2:10Speaker 2: got a record eight nights are sold out at Wembley
- 2:13Speaker 2: this summer, so she's coming back to do the rest
- 2:15Speaker 2: of those.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty frightening there and you can see why the
- 2:19Speaker 1: authorities have moved to close the concerts down. Thank you
- 2:21Speaker 1: so much for your time, Vincent. Vincent mcavannie are UK
- 2:23Speaker 1: and Europe correspondent.
