Transcript
- 0:00The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network. Welcome to another
- 0:05episode of Techtbok Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Seanward, I'm Matt Jones,
- 0:11and I'm justin leme. All right. We are the show that talks
- 0:14about computers, technology, and the Internet. But wait a second. Yeah,
- 0:18there's a new there's a new voice in here. Matt Jones. That's
- 0:25a great name. That's like a secret agent name. Are you double eight?
- 0:32So I was. I was in this class my freshman year of college
- 0:37in like two thousand and six, before like geolocation everything like came into social
- 0:41media. And I had a professor who goes, who doesn't think they have
- 0:45to hide their online activity? And I'm the only person who raised my hand,
- 0:48and he goes, why not? And I was like, I'm a
- 0:50nondescript five foot ten white guy and my name is Matt Jones in America.
- 0:57Okay, anyone besides John Smith and the over there him for anonymity and we
- 1:06all know what he's gonna do when he grows up. So yeah, anyone
- 1:08else who doesn't want to destroy the point that I was just trying to make.
- 1:11All right, Man, I got we gotta ask it, like,
- 1:15so, what got you into technology? Probably when I was When I was
- 1:18a kid, we we had computer lab and everything, and I loved it.
- 1:22But when we got our first computer in the house, I definitely had
- 1:26a lot of fun playing with it. But what it really was was when
- 1:29it died and my my dad was in the navy, and you got a
- 1:34buddy who was big into technology, and he brought a new computer into the
- 1:37house and got everything set up. I was like, what are we doing
- 1:38with the old one? They were like, we have no plans with it,
- 1:42and I just pulled out like a screwdriver, a power drill, and
- 1:46I broke that thing down into its very basics. Since then I was just
- 1:51like, Nope, this is it for me. That's the best way for
- 1:53the kids to learn is to actually do it. That's why I like those
- 1:56kids. Have you guys ever seen those kids that they make for kids where
- 2:00they can build their own computer. It's raspberry you know, but Raspberry pies.
- 2:04Yeah yeah, yeah, Well that's a great idea. There's there's another
- 2:07not not necessarily a computer per se, but like, uh, you guys
- 2:13a'll probably know. Mark rober on YouTube, famous engineer used to work for
- 2:17NASA, built the Mars rover, and now he does a YouTube channel.
- 2:21Are you serious, Andy, You don't know who Mark Robber is? No?
- 2:23I don't. Oh wow, Mark Rober is amazing. He's an amazing
- 2:27youtubeer. He does some amazing engineering videos on YouTube. I love his channel.
- 2:32He's the guy that did the glitter bomb when what the people that are
- 2:36stealing packages? See everybody knows the glitter bomb. Now I know him,
- 2:39yes, yeah, yeah, he's the guy that engineered four of that.
- 2:43Now oh well he he I think he did V four and then he just
- 2:46stopped. He was like, look, we're done with the glitter Bomb.
- 2:47We're gonna move on to other things. But anyway, he has another company
- 2:52called crunch Labs and they provide a monthly subscription box where you can build some
- 3:00of a toy and it can be a lot of Every month is different.
- 3:04But also it includes an exclusive YouTube video that is not public that you can
- 3:08watch and you're and it basically it's Mark Robert walking your kid through how to
- 3:14build this crunch Labs box and what it can be used for, and so
- 3:17it teaches your kids engineering. It's it's it's strictly stem So if you're if
- 3:23your kids are into STEM, uh science, technology, engineering, math,
- 3:27If you don't know, it's a great little thing. And I'm I'm kind
- 3:30of thinking of getting that for Eric for Christmas. That's a good idea.
- 3:35I was gonna ask you guys, because you have kids, Sean Justin.
- 3:38I'm not sure about Matt, but oh he's got dogs. Dogs you can
- 3:43teach them. I mean, can you teach dog STEM? I wonder?
- 3:47But but I mean, you guys have kids, would you like entertain the
- 3:52idea of getting them into STEM as soon as you could? Absolutely? Yeah?
- 3:59I mean serious world of technology. That's the world we live in,
- 4:01right. It's we would put our kids at such a disadvantage if we don't
- 4:04encourage them to adopt technology. Right. But that isn't saying don't learn other
- 4:10things. But technology is going to be the forefront of well are but the
- 4:15next ten years of our life in the future? Right? Yeah. But
- 4:17see, that's the thing is that you're when you say technology, Sean,
- 4:20you're only talking about one fourth of what STEM stands for, you know.
- 4:26So STEM is teaching you, Science is teaching you, technology is teaching you
- 4:30engineering, and it is teaching new mathematics. All four of those topics are
- 4:33extremely important in today's society. We don't necessarily need French or home economics,
- 4:42which I don't even think they teach that anymore, to be honest, But
- 4:45like, I don't they need STEM. I disagree. I'm I'm with you
- 4:49on that one, Andy, I I do disagree. I think that home
- 4:53ech, wood shop, metal shop, things like that. I you know,
- 4:57I did that when I was in middle school. And I also think
- 4:59it's thing that we need to continue. And it's it's kind of two fold.
- 5:05So when you're like, we don't need French, the place that I
- 5:10went to school, I want to say about five years ago, they actually
- 5:13adopted a change to the language requirement could now include coding languages instead of just
- 5:18yes, oh yeah. I thought that was awesome. But I know this
- 5:25is tech talk radio. But I think we also do a mild disservice to
- 5:30the future generations by saying you need to do STEM, you need to be
- 5:33in technology, you need to go to college. We are also in the
- 5:38US facing a massive decline in our skilled trade workforce because we keep telling them
- 5:43you have to go to college to be successful. You need to go get
- 5:46a four year degree and get the debt equivalent of a small crew with you
- 5:50to be successful. And I think we need to put those things back in
- 5:55school for home economics, wood shop, metal shop, autoshop, because there
- 5:59are people who are not going to be technology oriented, but they might have
- 6:04an innate talent to do welding or carpenterers. And I think that's something that
- 6:09Germany actually does very well. Is part of your education. You actually have
- 6:14to go do a small apprenticeship in a trade. You have to work inside
- 6:17that workforce, and I think that's something we're definitely missing. So absolutely,
- 6:23I don't completely agree with the remove it, but I do think we need
- 6:28to increase the focus as well as the traditional trade style jobs, but also
- 6:34do things like the school district did where hey, you prove proficient proficiency in
- 6:41Python Java. Those those complete your language requirements because you are still technically learning
- 6:48a new language. Right, we can we just agree on one thing?
- 6:53What would that be? Can we can we just please get rid of common
- 6:56core math? Oh? God, yes, it's like that thing from The
- 7:00Incredible Math is math. Here's here's one of the one of the things I
- 7:05don't like about this. You see the ads on television for services like chime,
- 7:11and you see these others where they're trying they're trying to get the youth
- 7:15to understand, Hey, you can get in advance on your paycheck, live
- 7:19without your meat, live beyond your means, but don't worry. We're gonna
- 7:23front you two hundred bucks and then we'll take it. It will take a
- 7:25small fee out of that. And that's the worst kind of economics to think
- 7:30about it, Like we need well with homech I remember you learned how to
- 7:33balance a checkbook, make a budget? Do I never got that in home
- 7:39X see I did, and I thought that in civics, yeah, yeah,
- 7:43or to understand, you know, finances and how they work. The
- 7:46problem is, no, I don't think the kids learn that unless the parents
- 7:49sit down and teach them. But you've got these ads now social media directing
- 7:55them to go ahead and you know, hey, live live beyond your got
- 7:58a credit card when you're eighteen exactly, And that scares me. It's because
- 8:03all of this education at this point is not driven to teach. You are
- 8:09driven to perform on test scores, and ever since we adopted that where the
- 8:13metric of how well you're doing is how well you do on a test.
- 8:18Shockingly, not everybody's a good test taker. And with that we one or
- 8:24two people in here who are like that because you know, I know,
- 8:28justin. But we need to go back to actually educating, teaching financial literacy,
- 8:35teaching basic life skills. You know, people don't know how to yeah,
- 8:39people don't know how to balance a checkbook anymore because no one really carries
- 8:43a check book, true, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah,
- 8:45to create a bounce a budget, yeah, how to find your means,
- 8:48how to live inside of those means. We need basic life skills. Here's
- 8:52how you do taxes, because God, that's all God, figure out what
- 8:58you're an adult for the first time. You don't think that's gonna go away.
- 9:03There are certain things that are guaranteed life, death and taxes. Yes,
- 9:07we need to go back to truly educating. As you know, here's
- 9:11here's basic life skills that we just don't teach them. I mean, I
- 9:16remember going to college and walking into the launder room and there was this girl
- 9:20just staring utterly confused at the washer and dryer and she was like, I've
- 9:24tried to draw my clothes like four times and it won't dry. And I
- 9:28pull out the link trap and outcomes like a link claude, like the size
- 9:33of Encyclopedia Britannica. I'm like, it's not drying because there's no air going
- 9:37to the dryer. And when the building burns down, this is gonna be
- 9:41the cause. That's the cause. Yes, there's so many life skills that
- 9:45we just don't teach anymore, and you got to figure it out through YouTube.
- 9:50I mean there's a YouTube channel that is this guy who is just being
- 9:54a dad and he's like yeah. It was like, it's like I know
- 9:56that channel. He's like, hey, it's dad. He you're in today,
- 10:00I'm gonna teach you how to I'm like, we should. We are
- 10:03failing utterly as a society for not teaching those basic life skills to these kids.
- 10:09If you need a YouTube channel on on what from your from your virtual
- 10:13dad, that's how bad we are right now. Yeah, yeah, well
- 10:18awry When it comes to technology, though, what do you guys think about
- 10:20this? And I've thought about this. I've got and this is my argument
- 10:24for having so many old computers in the garage, right because I've been asked
- 10:28about them and I said, I'm saving them for August. August is my
- 10:31grandson, because one day I'm gonna show him how to build a system.
- 10:37Well, those aren't gonna be there's there's nothing to it. But and I
- 10:41said, but then to learn the basics, to learn from the start hard
- 10:45drive, motherboard, CPU, memory, video card case, and how to
- 10:50like install it even and Shi, it's not even gonna be in use anymore.
- 10:54You know, I was gonna say, none of that's going to be
- 10:56around us. Ye, he's three, he's there or two right now,
- 11:00so you know, in ten years when he's ready to start learning, probably
- 11:03it's gonna be just a glowing cube. Like it's just it's like it's gonna
- 11:09be all AI infused. I mean, that's my excuse right now too for
- 11:13all the computers I have, is that I gotta teach Max how to build
- 11:16computers at some point. Yeah, Matt, what is I don't have a
- 11:20kid, so I don't have an excuse when my wife's like, why do
- 11:22we still have all these computers? I'm like, uhh reasons. Yeah,
- 11:28It's like it's like that big box of tangled cables. It's because one day
- 11:31I might need it. And as soon as you get rid of that box
- 11:35of cables. You're gonna find a cable that you need. I found a
- 11:37cable the other day. I have no clue what it goes to. It's
- 11:41a USB USB cable, but on the end of it you've got the you
- 11:46know, USB and then the other end is a phono plug, Like you
- 11:50mean like the plug three five millimeters. Yeah, but I have no idea
- 11:54what it would what I've used, what I would have used it for.
- 11:56If memory serves and we're going back to to uh the dark times, which
- 12:01is what I referred to when I worked for Best Buy. Yeah, those
- 12:05cables were usually used like the the USBO going your computer, the PHONEO,
- 12:09We're going to like uh uh walk something like that, and it would be
- 12:16used to help record the analog into digital. Ah, there you go.
- 12:22But there would would there have to be like some sort of a DAC in
- 12:26line, a digital analog converter or vice versa. Potentially we're going back like
- 12:31ten years at this point, so I I don't know, Man, some
- 12:33quick google fo right, what at this is it's used for? In car
- 12:41audio? In car audio, Oh yeah, it would go into the back
- 12:46of the audio deck and then come out into like your glove box and you
- 12:50plug your iPod or something into that and then it comes through your speak mail
- 12:54oox audio jack to the USB two point zero that would So they basically took
- 12:58the USB cables that are in the USB line that would be used for data
- 13:05and they just use those for analog. Ah, look at that. How
- 13:09much can I sell it? For sean seven dollars? Nice seven? A
- 13:13nice find you can get that's actually of a Starbucks coffee for the cost of
- 13:20that cable. There you go, Yeah, they gotta ship it to hey.
- 13:22But they do make USB adapters that will take in They're very small,
- 13:28right, and I have one. I have one at my desk, I
- 13:30think, but it'll take in analog audio and convert it to digital my audio
- 13:35board. It's so weird because you know, I'm in radio over thirty years
- 13:37and it used to be you know, everything was wired just a wired to
- 13:41a wire to a wire, and now it's all Ethernet. It's Ethernet to
- 13:46you know, uh, to phono too. I mean, it's just it's
- 13:48so bizarre, but that's that's how we do audio now. The new HDMI
- 13:54is how you know, if you look at the new HDMI cables or listening
- 13:56HDMI with Ethernet built into it. And speaking of you know, audio over
- 14:01Ethernet. You know, we were just talking. This is something I do
- 14:05at work, So you know, I've mentioned on the show before that I
- 14:07worked for water World, America's largest water park. And add the tag in
- 14:13there, hey, because it's true. We have an audio system that goes
- 14:20throughout the whole park, but we're using basically, all the amplifiers are up
- 14:24at one part of the park and then they just used you know, regular
- 14:28cable to take it all the way down to the bottom of the park.
- 14:31So the audio nearest to the amplifiers is nice and loud, but when you
- 14:35get to the very bottom of the park, that audio is super faint and
- 14:39kind of raspy and staticky and everything because there's signal loss because you're taking it
- 14:45so far. So actually, what we're doing now is this next season,
- 14:48we're going to be putting networked amplifiers in throughout the entire park. So we're
- 14:54gonna be putting network drops, and then that network drop will then feed and
- 15:00amplifier with the data of the audio, and then that amplifier then turns it
- 15:05into analog and feeds it out to the local speaker's nearest to the amplifier.
- 15:09That way, we get a more concise sound throughout the entire park. So
- 15:13yeah, going back to your you know what system are you using? I
- 15:16have no idea. Yeah, I mean I'm going to guess. I'm going
- 15:20to guess it's Dante. I've heard the word Dante come around. Yes,
- 15:24it might be, it might be if it's if it's audiover networking, it's
- 15:28either going to be Dante or Crestron. I was gonna say, please don't
- 15:33use Crestron. Yeah, we're not billionaires. First off. Does that mean
- 15:39I have to listen to your voice in crystal clear audio everywhere across the park?
- 15:41I'm never going yep yep. More and more companies are using this kind
- 15:46of thing now to yep to kind of send their audio. I remember Disneyland.
- 15:50It was all wired. You know. I'm wondering if they're doing it
- 15:54differently now. Oh, I'm sure they probably are. I mean you talk
- 15:56about Disney, I mean, Disney is always at the top of their game.
- 16:00To get a buddy. He specializes in av work, and you know
- 16:03he started uh he was a sound engineer major at Virginia Tech and his first
- 16:11real big job was at one of the mega churches back on the East coast,
- 16:15McClean Bible, right, And I mean they had satellite campuses all over
- 16:18the place, and he and I would be talking and all of a sudden
- 16:21you'd be like, yeah, and then we ran the eternet cable and did
- 16:23this, that and the other, and I'm like, this is it's wild
- 16:26that audio is now having that AV is having that conjunction with you know,
- 16:32general it to where he's reaching out, you know, every now and then
- 16:36you'd be like, I got a networking question. I'm like, why do
- 16:38you have a networking question for like a v And you'd send me a picture
- 16:42of his stack and I was like, oh, no, nope, that
- 16:45is not touching it. In the last six years at my job, I've
- 16:52learned more about networking than I did in the first ten years of my career.
- 16:56Yeah, because all of my work is going into the network. Well
- 16:59yeah, over network, video over network. It's it's crazy, so video
- 17:03over network that always that just mind boggles me because again you're doing like high
- 17:08quality video that is all, but it's all being done over a network connection.
- 17:15Man S. R. T is the future. I'm telling you right
- 17:17now. Wait, hold on, that begs the question. VOIPE stands for
- 17:22voice over I P. What is video over I P? Then that can
- 17:27also be called VOIPE the A V I P I don't know what there's or
- 17:33v I O I P view up. These are the things we talk about,
- 17:37Matt. I'm like googling it. I'm like video over I P.
- 17:44I mean that makes sense, right, I mean because you think everybody coined
- 17:47the term voipe for voice over I P. But now it's like, well,
- 17:49now are you talking about videover audio either a V slash I P or
- 17:56a V O I P. Yeah, that's so. I'm thinking a V
- 17:59O I avoy would be the term for that. So all right, I
- 18:04don't know that this is not really correlating to this, but I do have
- 18:07a question for you. A couple of weeks ago, we had Tableau TV
- 18:11on the show and we had you know, one of the CEOs on talking
- 18:15about what they do. And I have had a chance to experience it and
- 18:18I absolutely love it. The quality is amazing for what I've been able to
- 18:22get. My problem is I need a better antenna. Now with the Tableau
- 18:27set up, I got an antenna, but then I so I thought,
- 18:32just not cutting it. I'm getting I was getting about seventy two channels,
- 18:36but I'm missing ABC. I'm know I'm missing NBC, I'm missing Fox,
- 18:41and I'm missing a few of the other local channels. Wait with with an
- 18:45antenna? With an antenna, So, okay, have you rotated your antenna.
- 18:51I've got one of the flat wall antennas that can go onto the wall,
- 18:56and I've got the Turk Howard and Tennis. Yeah, it's power.
- 19:02I've had that. I'm still just not getting Fox, which is what I
- 19:06want to get. So I have an idea behind that. So I had
- 19:08the same problem when I worked for Fox thirty one here in Denver. I
- 19:14could get if I had my antenna in my window, the same kind of
- 19:17thing that you're talking about, like a little flat, thin one, and
- 19:19I even had it plugged into an amplifier, like an actual coax amplifier.
- 19:25Yeah, that's what I've got. I did that, and I could not
- 19:27pick up which one was it? I could not pick up ABC in town.
- 19:33I could pick up all the other ones. And when I went and
- 19:36talked to the chief engineer at Fox thirty one. He goes, there's a
- 19:38very easy explanation explanation behind this. He's like Fox, CBS, NBC,
- 19:45They're all using vertical wave on the RF on the RF spectrum. So think
- 19:52about, uh, for those of you can't watch the video, think about
- 19:56how when you stick your car or your hand out the car window when you're
- 19:59driving down and you kind of tilt your hand up and down and your your
- 20:02hand will move up and down. Right, that's vertical wave, all right.
- 20:06Now, rotate your hand ninety degrees, so you got kind of a
- 20:10knife hand. This is what ABC is using horizontal waves. So if your
- 20:15antenna is oriented in a certain fashion, you're only going to pick up the
- 20:19vertical waves, which is what ninety percent of the TV broadcasting companies use as
- 20:26vertical wave. But there are some, due to licensing constraints or something else,
- 20:30that have to use horizontal polarization. And that's what ABC was doing.
- 20:36So when I would rotate my dish, my little antenna my window ninety degrees,
- 20:41all of a sudden, I could pick up ABC, no problem.
- 20:45But I couldn't pick up NBC, Fox or CBS. So what I ended
- 20:48up having to do, which was super stupid, is I actually had to
- 20:52rotate my dish forty five degrees and like put tape on the window to keep
- 20:57the antenna a forty five degree angle. So therefore I could pick up both
- 21:03Fox, CBS, NBC and ABC. Well, I was wondering. I've
- 21:08seen these desktop in Tennis where you can put them on your desk. They're
- 21:12powered. I'm wondering if that would be a better solution than this one you
- 21:15stick on the wall that's got powered. I mean, it's it's it's again,
- 21:19it's all about the polarization of the RF frequency because I've seen them on
- 21:25Amazon for like sixty bucks and they're saying they've got a two hundred mile radius.
- 21:29But again, that's not a difference. Is that is not gonna No,
- 21:32it's not. Now, there's a website out there, I want to
- 21:33say, and maybe Sean, you can do your Google foe because you're so
- 21:37fast at this. But it's like it's like a TV tuner or TV and
- 21:41I tried the FCC's website for DTV and didn't during the break, I'll find
- 21:48it. But there's a website you can go to and you can type in
- 21:49your area code or you in your address and it will show you a map
- 21:53of where your local TV stations transmitting towers are located, and then it will
- 22:00tell you where to aim your intenna for the best reception. Yeah, yes,
- 22:04please find that. We'll take a break. We come back with more
- 22:07of tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean Duward, I'm Matt
- 22:10Jones, and I'm Justin. Let me find us on the web at tech
- 22:14talk radio dot com. We'll be right back and now back to tech talk
- 22:18Radio. Everybody out there in radioland this is James youngk from the rock band
- 22:22Stick. If you are technically challenged, if you got trouble with that computer
- 22:25ears, because lord knows I do, you need to listen to tech talk
- 22:27Radio. So, before we jumped to something else, something that I was
- 22:33thinking about as we were talking about, you know, horizontal versus vertical waves.
- 22:37I know, you know when I when I had my first Nintenda,
- 22:40it was rabbit ears, you know, you little telescoping things that you plug
- 22:44in. Depending on the way the wind was blowing, you had to adjust.
- 22:48You know, I can't see Smallville. Tom Wellington's too fuzzy for me
- 22:52to tell what Superman's doing. I know they've gone like the panel style that's
- 22:56got a fractal design inside of it, but for that it's just a two
- 23:00D fractal. I guess it's going to pick things up better, but I'm
- 23:03really curious to see if with horizontal and vertical being in play and the evolution
- 23:10of manufacturing and micronization of technology, I'd love to see if they're not doing
- 23:15like internal three D fractals, which is going to vastly increase your reception surface
- 23:22area, but also if it's going to take care of that horizontal and vertical
- 23:26problem. There's there's one minor little thing though to that real quick is the
- 23:32introduction of ATSC three. You're now cramming what used to be in a particular
- 23:37RF band maybe a dot one, a dot two, and a dot three.
- 23:42Right, those are like the channels, like, for instance, if
- 23:45your channel was seven seven, dot one was your primary, seven dot two
- 23:49was the secondary used to maybe carry me TV uh seven Dot three would carry
- 23:55like Comet TV or whatever. Right that fit into the standard spectrum. Now
- 24:00we're talking about ATSC three, which is now taking dot one, dot two
- 24:03and dot three and expanding it to dot one to dot twenty five and you're
- 24:08fitting all those extra channels into that tiny little space using a different uh modulation
- 24:15algorithm. How is that gonna affect your reception because now it's gonna have to
- 24:19be even more precise, wouldn't it. Wow? Yeah, it's it's gonna
- 24:23be interesting. But getting back to the fractal side of it, right,
- 24:27it's just you have all these crazy designs for fractal antennas, and it's just
- 24:33a mix of different patterns and designs to help grab those radio waves and reflect
- 24:37them back into each other, so you're picking them up on their main frequency
- 24:41and then they're harmonics. Either it's polarized harmonic or it's normal harmonic. Uh.
- 24:47There's a lot of fractal antennas in HAM radio because it's easier to do
- 24:52fractal antennas with HF bands because the wave links are bigger. But it it
- 25:00is. It looks like they are miniaturizing it, right, It's just based
- 25:03on my quick Google food. There are some di wise for HGTV fractal antennas
- 25:10and it it kind of looks like bow ties. Yeah yeah, I've seen
- 25:15those, yeah, and star shapes and some other weird looking shapes just using
- 25:21copper so it'd be interesting to see what somebody with a three D modeler that
- 25:26could three D model in metal could do. Or I kind of wonder,
- 25:30do you I remember growing up, you know, in Orange County, California,
- 25:33and we had the old style roof antenna, you know that thing went
- 25:38up. I kind of went, would that be still be a better situation
- 25:42to have that? Yeah, So you could get a yagy. Those are
- 25:45called Yagi's right, it's multi beam but depending on you know, it's UHF
- 25:49or VHF, right, but they make multi beam yagis for both VHF and
- 25:55UHF. I have one for my Ham radio stuff, which I that's how
- 25:57I used to talk. That's what I used to talk to the space stations.
- 26:02But yeah, you could get one of those, but it depends on
- 26:06all of your Those are very directional, oh they are. So are all
- 26:10of your TV stations near the same spot, Like the Grand Rapids Market where
- 26:15I did most of my career at the beginning of my career in all of
- 26:18the antennas are in the same three tower section near whalesm Michigan with Denver,
- 26:25meaning I could swing my antenna straight south from my apartment and pick up all
- 26:29the stations because they were all radiating from that same location. Got it.
- 26:33But then if I wanted to get the stations in northern Michigan, I could
- 26:36just rotate it one hundred and eighty degrees the points straight north. And yes,
- 26:40the bottom edge of northern Michigan regis the TV stations. So this is
- 26:45this is how most most cities are designed this way, where the transmitting towers
- 26:51from your TV stations are usually on top of the same mountain, usually the
- 26:56highest point. But then when you get into things like Los Angeles, New
- 27:00York, Chicago, that's when you're going to have to have You're going to
- 27:06have TV stations coming from every different direction because you have so many different places
- 27:11you can place a transmitting tower. Right. I remember when on TV came
- 27:18to California that that changed. That changed the game, and we went from
- 27:22an antenna to suddenly you had something that came into your house and you were
- 27:26able to pick it up and you have this long string for your remote and
- 27:30they are long cord, and that that's how you change the channel. I
- 27:33mean, it was amazing. And I know we've talked about this before,
- 27:36right, and we talked about the reduction of AM radios and cars. Right,
- 27:40we talked about this halfu of months ago. We are going to I
- 27:42this is my opinion. I believe we are going to see a reduction in
- 27:48broadcast television. You think so wow. I completely agree with Sean on that.
- 27:53As the as the broadband Internet spectrum grows and grows and grows and grows,
- 28:00and the FCC gives more of the radio wave bandwidths to cell phone manufacturers,
- 28:08there's going to be a desire to squeeze out those bandwidths well that TV
- 28:14stations are using. That's why they move to ATSC three, is to fit
- 28:18more content within a smaller bandwidth. I just the money is not going to
- 28:23be there. The money is going to be in broadband and streaming. There's
- 28:29not going to be an incentive to do traditional over the air television anymore.
- 28:34Now. Granted it's gonna be there, it's going to continue to be there.
- 28:37Always kind of mandated by the federal government, isn't it? It is?
- 28:41It is, But there's no requirement to put content there. Right,
- 28:47There's requirement to do emergency services, there's requirement to do public access. There's
- 28:52no requirement from NBC, CBS, ABC to actually put content on the air.
- 29:00So are you saying that our local Fox station could eventually just lose its
- 29:08Fox license and therefore they could not show any more Fox content. I'm just
- 29:14giving Fox as an example. They could not show any more Fox content.
- 29:18So basically now they're just down to public access basically. Okay, a little
- 29:23bit. You might be able to understand this a little bit more in terms
- 29:26of relativity to the location. KUSI. They're just a normal news station that
- 29:33has no affiliate, that's true, but they do out of San Diego.
- 29:37Yeah, it's the San Diego station. There are a lot of other stations
- 29:41that are like that. Right. The government is giving money to Fox to
- 29:45have the license to the space. They give them the space for free and
- 29:48say use this space. But there's nothing that's stopping them from putting not putting
- 29:55good quality content there and forcing subscribers to move on to a paid premium place
- 30:02to get the content they want to watch. I do know that we're starting
- 30:07to see some of our local channel. I'm starting to see more news broadcasts.
- 30:11Yes, I was just going to we're you know where Normally you've got
- 30:15maybe a block a half an hour or a half an hour and uh,
- 30:18and that then it was you know, your national news or NBC their they're
- 30:22big program Today show, et cetera. But you're starting to see now they're
- 30:26extending that we have like for KLD, which starts early four thirty in the
- 30:32morning and we'll go on and now they've added they've bumped one show and they've
- 30:36added an hour news block. There. The reason why, and some people
- 30:40have asked, is, yeah, they're providing for the community, but also
- 30:44that's where they make their money. They're making their ad dollars and they're not
- 30:48having to I mean other than having to pay for the talent and uh to
- 30:52be a part of that. That's really that's it. And they can recycle
- 30:56that news. Yeah, local local, local news. When I was working
- 31:00in the news industry, local content, whether it be your local newscast or
- 31:04like a local variety show or something that was local to your community. That's
- 31:10where they could sell one hundred percent of their advertising and make one hundred percent
- 31:15of that revenue. Whereas when you're in primetime, when you're doing Fox,
- 31:22CBS, ABC, NBC, whatever, even morning primetime, which is like
- 31:26Good Morning America, Today's Show, whatever it is, right, you're splitting
- 31:32that revenue with your your main carrier, like your CBS, your ABC or
- 31:37NBC, Fox, whatever. So when they do that, and I've noticed,
- 31:41yes, you're right, I've noticed even our local one they start at
- 31:44four thirty am. They used to go to ten. Now they're going to
- 31:48one pm. Wow, And then they have a two pm broadcast from two
- 31:52to three, and then they have their four thirty till seven broadcasts. And
- 31:57that's the thing that they can recycle those elements. They've already shot them,
- 32:01they've already put them together in packages. Then you can recycle it pretty easy.
- 32:05Sean, you were in the industry, you know, you go out
- 32:07and you shoot a package that's going to air throughout the day, maybe even
- 32:10later on in the week. Well, and if you haven't seen them on
- 32:15the internet, just google it and look for that. The stories that are
- 32:20told on every major market news station, because a lot of that stuff is
- 32:25a subscription that companies pay for to get the news that's generated for them.
- 32:30And Sinclair, all these large corporations that own the majority of the news stations
- 32:37pass this along. We should all have their subsister stations and they have to
- 32:40air the content. And the content is the same. Yeah, So they
- 32:45have their corporate offices, they do these news segments and they just get pushed
- 32:50down on the server. You download it, you run it. There is
- 32:54a and it's funny because on k Weld there is another tech guy. And
- 33:00I remember when when I saw it for the first time, I said a
- 33:05note to to Andrew Capasso, who I will say has announced that he is
- 33:08going to be leaving k Weld and Chemi sp a great guy. I just
- 33:14I love working with him. When I said in a note and go,
- 33:15hey, I'm I being bumped out and he says that, No, he
- 33:17says, it's the corporate thing. So they're doing it corporate, this tech
- 33:22segment. And again it's like you said, it's being pushed to all the
- 33:25gray stations or all the stations, and that's sold as a package. So
- 33:30again they just produce it one time and it's just it's all over the place.
- 33:35Well look at look at what's his name, rich on Tech? Right,
- 33:37Yeah, rich rich Demiro. Rich Demiro. He used to be based
- 33:42out of KTLA. Is he the guy that took over Filio too? Yep,
- 33:45That's where I was going with this, is he was just a KTLA
- 33:49guy. Now. Now, granted, KTLA is a massive station, even
- 33:52though it's not one of the top four like in terms of the big broadcasters.
- 33:57It's a CW affiliate. Yeah, but KTLA News is one of the
- 34:01highest rated news programs in the Los Angeles market. And this guy does the
- 34:07text of me and all of a sudden, now he's doing it for San
- 34:09Diego. When I was working there, he did it for like a bunch
- 34:13of other stations. And now look at him. He's now taken over for
- 34:16Leo Laporte, the tech guy. It is now Rich on Tech. He
- 34:21does a good job, he really does. He's not He's no Leo,
- 34:23though he's uh, well, Leo had a certain way of doing it.
- 34:27Leo's been on the show, and I you know, I have a lot
- 34:30of respect for him. He did a good job. And I think his
- 34:32wife still runs the whole thing, right and uh, Lisa, and I
- 34:37think Rich. I don't know, Rich is a part of that. So
- 34:38I don't know, I don't know how they're working that, but yeah,
- 34:40I mean that's the whole thing is again, it's we're seeing them stretch it
- 34:45because that's where their dollar comes in. And it's all about making money.
- 34:49But let's face it, when you get ready for work in the morning,
- 34:52you turn on the local, don't. I don't turn on CNN, I
- 34:54don't turn on Fox or MSNBC, you know. I'll turn on the local,
- 35:00know, Fox eleven or KOLD, you know, and see what's going
- 35:02on. And I think that's that's the habits for most people. They want
- 35:07to know what's happening right there in their community. Well, I mean weather.
- 35:09Weather is a big draw. Weather is a big draw to local news
- 35:14because people are looking at what their weather's going to be like for their day
- 35:19or their week or whatever it is, and that's what they want to see.
- 35:22So when you tune into the morning news, there's a reason why they
- 35:24have weather jeckins every ten minutes or ten to fifteen minutes. Yeah, is
- 35:30because that's what the normal person's news cycle is. They've got ten or fifteen
- 35:34minutes while they get their coffee and their breakfast, get the kids out the
- 35:37door, and get ready for work. That's how much time they've got.
- 35:40So they want to hear the latest news and then the weather. That's it.
- 35:45Yeah, that's and that's why I see what was it meant? And
- 35:49I was gonna say, and it's it's interesting that you make the point of
- 35:52like local versus national, because you know, I'm I'm a corn cutter.
- 35:55I don't. I don't have broadcast TV in my house anymore, haven't in
- 36:00you know, ten years or so. But if I want to wake up,
- 36:07I can wake up. And I'm not actually gonna say the company name,
- 36:10but it rhymes with uh loogle because like eight devices will go off in
- 36:15my office if I do. But if I say, you know, like
- 36:19okay, Loogle, good morning, it'll tell me the weather, my itinerary,
- 36:24and then like the top five news stories of the day. But it's
- 36:28all national or global news. I don't get any of that local information unless
- 36:34I find some way to dial into a local news source. Yep, yeah,
- 36:37it'll get me my traffic update, but that's from Google Maps. I
- 36:40don't have somebody. You know. Hey, this is Johnny from the helicopter
- 36:44taking a look. And we see a jackknife trailer on I twenty five.
- 36:47Looks like the drivers slowly climbing out of the cab doesn't make So there's a
- 36:52workless voice that's like your drive will take fifteen minutes. So there was a
- 36:58big push for a while where you could tie in local news stations to Alexa's,
- 37:05Google's or whatever, so you could say, hey, give me my
- 37:08local news from Fox, and it would actually read and scrape the information from
- 37:14the local news stations and give it to you as if you were getting your
- 37:16local news instead. But Google stripped those APIs away, then that kind of
- 37:23just crumbled because it was ad revenue that was being taken away from other places.
- 37:28Doesn't make you wonder, though, is that an opportunity for a broadcaster
- 37:31that it wants to do their own for their local market. I mean,
- 37:36I'm I mean, I get in I That's why I think radio has missed
- 37:39the mark in some big radio conglomeration corporations. And I've worked for them,
- 37:45or you know, I've worked for one of the big guys, and they
- 37:49don't They don't want time checks, they don't want weather, they don't want
- 37:52this. And the problem is I get in my car if I can tune
- 37:55to the local station and I get a DJ that's sitting in that studio that
- 38:00can tell me just like they do here at this station, but can tell
- 38:04me the weather, what's going on in the local roads, what time it
- 38:07is. I appreciate that. That's what I want. I want, that's
- 38:10the information I want, And there's only one station in Denver that does that
- 38:15right now. Everything else is tracked. There's a British guy that does the
- 38:22show. I swear to god England. He's tracking it from England. When
- 38:27I listened to this, I'm thinking, no, I swear, I'm thinking,
- 38:30hold on, is this guy doing BB one or what is it bb
- 38:32BBC one, BBC one Radio one, Radio one out of out of England?
- 38:37Like, what the heck, dude, I mean, I'm listening in
- 38:40Denver, Colorado. This guy's like, oh, you know what, I'm
- 38:44not even gonna do it. I can't. I can't do a British accent.
- 38:45I can't, I can't. But this guy's like straight up British.
- 38:49Like I'm wait, wait, hold on, what am I listening to?
- 38:52Whatever happened to Rick Lewis? Is he still in Denver? Oh? Rick
- 38:54Lewis? Yeah, Rick Lewis? And uh yeah, no, yeah,
- 39:00no Rick Lewis. And now it's Dave Logan. They do they do an
- 39:05afternoon show and then they're also the two of them are the voice of the
- 39:07Broncos. So so Rick Lewis does the color commentary and then Dave Logan does
- 39:13the play by play on the radio. Yeah, I remember it is Lewis
- 39:15and Floor Wax. They were hilarious and Rick Rick did some time in Orange
- 39:20County when I lived out there and was great. So yeah, good,
- 39:23So Rick Louis still does it. Yeah, all right, got to take
- 39:24quick break, come back more of tech Talk Radio. We've got a little
- 39:29challenge coming up a little later on. We're going to see who is the
- 39:30sharpest, coming up the fastest with the anagrams? Is that what you call
- 39:36him? Anagrams? Anagrams? Yeah, yeah, yeah, acronym. You
- 39:43send your cousin Anna, all right, Yeah, Hi Andy Taylor, I'm
- 39:46sean to hear. I'm Matt Jones and I'm justin le me. You can
- 39:50find us on Facebook at facebook dot com, forward slash tech Talker, send
- 39:54us a message. Thanks. Now back to tech Talk Radio. So it's
- 40:01not a drone, which would be surprised by because it's not a drug.
- 40:06They announced drums like once a week. All right, Yeah, it's the
- 40:08DJI pocket Osmo. All right, so what is that? What is it?
- 40:12It's not a drone. I have one of those something that you have
- 40:15a you have a pocket Osmo. So it is a palm sized camera that
- 40:20is three axis stabilized and it's made by DGI and you pair it with your
- 40:25phone and you can record clips and it's incredible. So it's been great,
- 40:30right. They first announced the Osmo back I want to say, two thousand
- 40:34and ten eleven. You pair it to your phone. It had there's this
- 40:37big bulky thing that worked out great. It worked out great, but it
- 40:39was big and bulky. Then they announced the Pocket Osmo form factor, very
- 40:45small, but it only had I think a one in one thursday inch very
- 40:47tiny sensor in it. But it actually comes with a camera, comes with
- 40:52the camera on it. Yeah, it comes with the camera. It's a
- 40:52gimbal. It's you can joystick control, pan till all the whole thing.
- 40:57Then they announced the two, which had a larger sensor. I have better
- 41:00low light performance with their their hyper smoothing or whatever they call it. I
- 41:04don't remember between GoPro and them. I can't nember keep those too straight.
- 41:07They announced a couple of weeks ago they announced their Pocket three and the biggest
- 41:10jump was they went to a one inch sensor, which is huge it's a
- 41:16big sensor. It's huge for a number of reasons. The sensor is actually
- 41:19physically big for a one in censor to be crammed into a pocket sized camera
- 41:24allows you to get really great light low light performance and a good pixel density
- 41:30which I had to look up the actual pixel density on this said, don't
- 41:34see it off the top of my head. But it's for of those people
- 41:37that don't want to take their DSLR with them to get stabilized footage on trips.
- 41:44You know, if you have a DSLR, you hand hold it,
- 41:45you're not gonna get nice smooth footage. But you can pack this in your
- 41:50bag, you can pull it out, get your nice, crispy smooth footage.
- 41:54And it's relatively inexpensive for about four ninety nine I think is for the
- 41:58pocket three Oh wow. Yeah, so just their dj I is known for
- 42:06their three acts stabilization, right, they have that's they have the road in.
- 42:09They've got a couple other stabilization systems that they have for their broadcast level
- 42:15stuff. But h three ninety nine on Amazon is what I see right now,
- 42:19three ninety nine or four ninety nine three on Amazon. Okay, because
- 42:24I have the Pocket two and I love it. I love the pocket too.
- 42:29The only gripe that I have and is this is probably me is A
- 42:32is A is an old man. But the screen, the preview screen size
- 42:39was just so small, like I had to wear my reader glasses just to
- 42:44be able to see what I'm trying to film, which then forced me to
- 42:49look at the screen and not at the surrounding what I'm actually experiencing in real
- 42:53life. I would love it to have. It's a it's a two inch
- 42:59size screen now, so the screen is larger also, that's that's nice because
- 43:02this one is like probably less than an inch screen, and it was just
- 43:07so it was nice and small. I mean, it really does fit in
- 43:09your pocket. And the stabilization and it records at four K video four K
- 43:15at sixty frames a second or ten EIGHTP at one hundred and twenty. The
- 43:20Osmo Pocket three will do four K one in sixteen by nine, So it
- 43:24doesn't use it doesn't use the full one inch censer, right, because I
- 43:28think that'd be like a I don't know what the aspect ratio and that would
- 43:30be if they use the full censor. But yeah, for if you,
- 43:35like I said, if you want nice, good, stabilized footage for a
- 43:39relatively pro sumer level budget. This is gonna be where you want to go.
- 43:44All right, now, you had mentioned that you can tie it to
- 43:46your smartphone, right the footage is it recorded onto the Osmo three itself or
- 43:53is it recorded onto the smartphone? Is recorded to your phone? Well wait,
- 43:59so wait, so the three doesn't have an SD card anymore because the
- 44:01Osmo two has an SD card, it says, and I haven't don't have
- 44:06it because the way the Osmo two worked was that you would use your phone
- 44:12as the controller. So you could actually plug the Osmo two into the USB
- 44:17port on the side, and then you could hold your phone and the OSMA
- 44:22would hang off the side and then you could look at your phone was a
- 44:25much bigger screen. But then you're kind of always constantly wondering is the ospco
- 44:30gonna fall out of the USB slot? So you're kind of like walk around
- 44:34with two hands. And that kind of sucked. So I quickly I was
- 44:37quickly skimming this said, did misread right? It has no built in storage,
- 44:40so you do have to supply a micro SD card. Okay, good,
- 44:44good, But it doesn't have any built in internal storage on its own.
- 44:47Yeah, so you have to provide a That's okay, that's the way.
- 44:52Yeah, that's what DJA always does. Yeah, this article made it
- 44:53seem like it didn't have any internal storage. I couldn't believe. So I
- 44:57kept scrolling through it and finally read that. But if you, if you
- 45:00I want to, you could have it a stream to your phone and then
- 45:02you could edit the video on there and then post it, I mean,
- 45:05if you're Yeah. So, actually DJI was one of the This is a
- 45:08fun fact I did this when I was at Fox is DJI was one of
- 45:12the first companies to allow you to do RTSP streaming out of the osmouh.
- 45:19So originally, and this is a whole nother level of nerd for me,
- 45:22right is I took the ASMO, connected it to the station network, put
- 45:28out an RTSPS RTM RTSP stream, had a a server running Engine X pulling
- 45:36in that RTSP stream, spinning it out a DeckLink card via FFmpeg. So
- 45:40I was taking a live stream from the OSMO over the station network and getting
- 45:46it into baseband into the switcher. Can I just say something real quick,
- 45:52I'm looking at this DGI website. This dgi ronin four D looks amazing.
- 46:00This is like Hollywood level. What is steady. It's a steady can,
- 46:06but it's like it's a full on like camera with a gimbal attached to it.
- 46:10That looks amazing. Yeah. So if you start getting into the DJI
- 46:15stuff with their with their DJI transmission and their dj ronin UH, you can
- 46:20actually do control wireless control and actually do you get You can get steering crank
- 46:25wheels and stuff for like full on cinema level quality pan tilt zoom from remote
- 46:34they did. They went very quickly from a moderate level drone company to a
- 46:40industry leading gibble uh stabilization company in in a matter of a decade. And
- 46:46it's kind of crazy how they just shot up so fast and they want one
- 46:50of these. They've been able to keep the competition away. You think about
- 46:53how competitive that got, you know, just six years ago go Pro uh
- 47:00some of those other companies they were able to really kind of fend themselves off
- 47:02because GoPro got into the drone cameras as well, and you know, just
- 47:07it failed miserably, h is what happened. Yeah, And it's funny because
- 47:12I like to bring this up every time because if I told you that GoPro
- 47:15made a drone, you wouldn't believe me. Yeah, I remember it,
- 47:17and people people listening on the radio are gonna be like, GoPro makes a
- 47:20drone. We were at c C right justin you were at CS number that,
- 47:25Yeah, and they go Pro had it locked in. They were the
- 47:32first ones to do it to where you could just take your GoPro, jam
- 47:35it into a drone and take it off and fly it and get stabilized video.
- 47:39And they just they I don't know what they did, but they missed
- 47:44it. Okay, you said you found it for three ninety nine on Amazon,
- 47:52Okay, because on the official website for Dji it's five nineteen, right,
- 47:57So why I'm gonna put Tecorador on blast? The article stinks. So
- 48:01I'm ready to tech Radar review of the Osmo Pocket three right because I was
- 48:07about to buy one until I saw that. Now this article is a mess,
- 48:12and it's got links for the Action three in here where it should be
- 48:15for the Pocket three, and it's the stinks. This article stinks, all
- 48:22right, so based but on Amazon, what did you find it for or
- 48:25you didn't nine five nine, five ninety nine. All right, so you're
- 48:30gonna spend a little more. And there's there's one thing I'm seeing on this
- 48:32that you know, we're not quite talking about. Is an eighty percent charge
- 48:38in sixteen minutes. Wow. And the Dji pocket too was an eighty percent
- 48:45charge in forty eight minutes. For as much as we use the technology and
- 48:49everything, you know, the worst thing you can imagine is the dreaded low
- 48:52battery or you know, you you know, you took a trip and you
- 48:58were out later than you you get back, you forget to plug it in.
- 49:01You wake up in the morning and you're like, ah, crap,
- 49:02now I'm stuck here for like an hour, or I gotta plug it into
- 49:07some external battery. That's you know, I got a cable coming out of
- 49:09my pocket. A sixteen minute charge to eighty percent. That's ridiculous. That
- 49:15is really hot. Yeah, yeah, right, that is actually a really
- 49:22good idea. All right, So we're gonna take another quick break. We
- 49:24come back. Somebody here on the show is gonna win themselves something, uh,
- 49:29and we're gonna see pocket Osimo three no no, uh, but well
- 49:34we'll tell you about that when we come back with more of tech Talk Radio.
