- 2:07Speaker 3: a sad note, as we've been telling you throughout the morning.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Kenny Bass, longtime television journalists, most recently with WCCHS Television
- 2:15Speaker 3: here in the Charleston Huntington market. Of course, WSAZ for
- 2:18Speaker 3: number of years, also worked for the Justice Administration. Kenny
- 2:21Speaker 3: Bass has passed away. Statement coming out from his family
- 2:24Speaker 3: late last night, Kenny died at the age of sixty
- 2:27Speaker 3: two after a battle with cancer. His family released that
- 2:31Speaker 3: information again via social media this morning. We'll have more
- 2:33Speaker 3: on that coming up a little bit later on. Also,
- 2:36Speaker 3: the talk line boys are going to cover it, and
- 2:38Speaker 3: we'll have more on it on midday as well. And
- 2:40Speaker 3: I'll have more on reflections of Kenny Bass coming up
- 2:43Speaker 3: a little bit later on. But he certainly certainly was
- 2:45Speaker 3: good at what he did. Millie Snyder, who's also good
- 2:48Speaker 3: at what she does, is with us right now. How
- 2:49Speaker 3: are you, miss Millie? I'm wonderful. How are you? I
- 2:51Speaker 3: am fine?
- 2:52Speaker 5: Good.
- 2:52Speaker 6: I asked you when I came in if your real
- 2:54Speaker 6: name was David, and you confirm that it is, they
- 2:58Speaker 6: I'll tell you what David Allen.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Someday I'll tell you what my real last name is.
- 3:02Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 3:03Speaker 6: I can't know.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Now nobody in radio uses their real names, you know.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Oh so I mean now I had thank you, thank
- 3:11Speaker 6: you giving me well.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Did you think Steve Animal's real last name was Animal?
- 3:15Speaker 3: I mean, come on, come on, Allan's my middle name.
- 3:18Speaker 6: Actually, Alan's your middle name. And I don't know you're
- 3:22Speaker 6: leaving me out of doubt.
- 3:24Speaker 3: It's not a it's not a secret. My my my
- 3:27Speaker 3: real last name is Gilpen g I L P I N.
- 3:29Speaker 5: I like that.
- 3:30Speaker 3: It's uh well. And the reason that I was given
- 3:33Speaker 3: the name Dave Allen is when I was seventeen years
- 3:35Speaker 3: old and I started my career. The general manager who
- 3:39Speaker 3: hired me, I was in high school, and he said
- 3:42Speaker 3: Gilpin and he said, what's your what's your middle name?
- 3:44Speaker 3: I said Alan. He said you're Dave Allen. So there
- 3:46Speaker 3: you go. Been Dave Allen. Wasn't always Dave Allen. When
- 3:49Speaker 3: I was in Ohio was Dave Daniels. That's the name
- 3:51Speaker 3: they gave me when I was in Ohio. I don't
- 3:53Speaker 3: know why it was Dave Daniels.
- 3:54Speaker 6: When I was in youth, had a variety of names.
- 3:57Speaker 6: And I'm sure some people along the way about in
- 3:59Speaker 6: their own.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Two Yeah, to talk to my wife, uh uh, Mike
- 4:03Speaker 3: Johnny Fever you know, and w k RP and Cincinnati
- 4:06Speaker 3: when he had a coffee cup that had all of
- 4:07Speaker 3: his different last names and aliases he'd used a different
- 4:10Speaker 3: radios that that's pretty funny now and now I've never
- 4:13Speaker 3: never and it was really I'll tell you, it was
- 4:15Speaker 3: kind of a source a sore spot with my late
- 4:18Speaker 3: father because he saw it as you know, you're ashamed
- 4:21Speaker 3: of the family name and so and it was nothing
- 4:23Speaker 3: like that. It's just the name that they gave me.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Because back in back in the early days of radio,
- 4:29Speaker 3: people generally speaking, uh, it was an old radio rule
- 4:32Speaker 3: that you had to have two first names. That's why
- 4:34Speaker 3: there's people named Randy Michaels and uh and Steve Adams
- 4:38Speaker 3: not to be confused with the journalist Steve Adams and
- 4:40Speaker 3: names like that, because it was easy to remember, and
- 4:43Speaker 3: that's why people everybody used these, you know, easy, easy names.
- 4:48Speaker 6: So well, I'm glad my real name is not easy
- 4:51Speaker 6: to remember because people know me as Milly. My real
- 4:55Speaker 6: name is Mildred, Mildred okay, and I'm not a Mildred no, yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 6: i am a mill.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Millifits by the way, happy belated birthday, Thank you very much.
- 5:05Speaker 3: When was the big days?
- 5:06Speaker 6: Sunday?
- 5:06Speaker 3: Sunday, Sunday, Thank you very much.
- 5:09Speaker 6: I got some wonderful cards from my family, some friends,
- 5:12Speaker 6: and one friend send me a card. She said, I'm
- 5:15Speaker 6: all these lovely things and then on the inside it
- 5:18Speaker 6: said We're so much alike. It's frightening.
- 5:22Speaker 2: It was fabulous.
- 5:23Speaker 3: You got to have you got to have good friends.
- 5:24Speaker 3: How old are you? Do you care to say? You
- 5:26Speaker 3: don't have to say, you don't want to?
- 5:27Speaker 6: Well, I always, I always, you know, counter that with
- 5:30Speaker 6: how old do I look?
- 5:32Speaker 3: Thirty five?
- 5:33Speaker 6: Oh, my goodness, you are. You are beyond a gentleman.
- 5:38Speaker 6: On Sunday at five thirty, I was the eighty three.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Eighty three, and I know I don't look at you
- 5:46Speaker 3: do not look eighty three.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Thank you, And I don't act like I'm eighty three.
- 5:51Speaker 6: I don't know what eighty three feels like because this
- 5:53Speaker 6: is the first time I'm at eighty three. But I
- 5:55Speaker 6: do credit my looking good and feeling good to a
- 6:00Speaker 6: way that I eat. And that's what I want people
- 6:03Speaker 6: to understand. That food is medicine, and the sooner people
- 6:08Speaker 6: find that out and visit us at our Mediterranean Group.
- 6:12Speaker 6: We meet at Trinity Lutheran Episcopal over on the Boulevard
- 6:18Speaker 6: at Elizabeth Street every Thursday at ten am and five
- 6:23Speaker 6: point thirty in the evening, and we're having an open
- 6:26Speaker 6: meeting two of them on Thursday, November sixth. Now, an
- 6:31Speaker 6: open meeting comes from the world that I lived in
- 6:34Speaker 6: for forty seven years, which was weight Watchers, and whenever
- 6:38Speaker 6: we had an open meeting, that means anyone can come
- 6:42Speaker 6: to find out what we're about, what we do, pick
- 6:45Speaker 6: up a lot of the wonderful handouts that we make
- 6:47Speaker 6: available every week, and find out for yourself what Mediterranean,
- 6:52Speaker 6: what Mediterranean eating is all about. Now, I spoke to
- 6:56Speaker 6: someone earlier this morning. They said, you know, if I
- 6:59Speaker 6: was going to have have my last meal, it would
- 7:02Speaker 6: be a feast of Mediterranean foods. She says, everything that
- 7:07Speaker 6: is Mediterranean is delicious. And that's what I want people
- 7:11Speaker 6: to know. I'm not wanting people to come and think
- 7:16Speaker 6: that they're going on a diet, because Mediterranean is not
- 7:19Speaker 6: a diet. It's a lifestyle. And the food is fresh,
- 7:23Speaker 6: clean and unbelievably healthy and.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Somewhat affordable. And I say that very much affordable. I'll
- 7:34Speaker 3: change that because people always think, well, in order to
- 7:36Speaker 3: eat healthy, I've got to spend now a lot of money,
- 7:40Speaker 3: and you don't with Mediterranean eating, and.
- 7:43Speaker 6: With what's coming down where a lot of people are
- 7:46Speaker 6: going to have, you know, less money to work with,
- 7:49Speaker 6: I have to say that Mediterranean it can be frozen,
- 7:52Speaker 6: it can be canned, it can be unfancy, but as
- 7:56Speaker 6: long as it doesn't have chemicals in it, then enjoy it,
- 7:59Speaker 6: because that's the way peple. By the way, the Mediterranean
- 8:02Speaker 6: population on the other side of the pond is about
- 8:06Speaker 6: one hundred and twelve million people, and so it's not
- 8:10Speaker 6: just a clatch of five or ten people who created this, right.
- 8:14Speaker 6: This is a way of life.
- 8:15Speaker 3: That is, there's not a much a scientist in a
- 8:17Speaker 3: lab that came up with this. In other words, absolutely not.
- 8:20Speaker 3: I mean this is something that.
- 8:21Speaker 6: These are and if God better, every day, every week,
- 8:24Speaker 6: every month because people eat together and by being with
- 8:28Speaker 6: others who are doing the same thing, it strengthens the
- 8:32Speaker 6: way you feel about yourself and you have a more
- 8:35Speaker 6: comfortable resolve. Mediterranean is the.
- 8:38Speaker 7: Way to go.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Now, if some you mentioned the Mediterranean feast, okay, what
- 8:42Speaker 3: would be on Millie Snyder's Mediterranean feast. It's not your
- 8:46Speaker 3: last meal, by the way, We're not going there, and
- 8:48Speaker 3: I'm just saying, I'm just saying, if you were to
- 8:51Speaker 3: make a Mediterranean feast, what would it be?
- 8:54Speaker 6: Okay, Well, first of all, I would have an unbelievably
- 8:57Speaker 6: beautiful salad that would have every vegetable in it. I
- 9:01Speaker 6: would season it with the best olive oil, and then
- 9:04Speaker 6: I would use lemon juice. Sometimes I use cider vinegar,
- 9:09Speaker 6: but it would definitely have olive oil. And then after
- 9:12Speaker 6: this gorgeous salad, I'd probably have some whole grain bread
- 9:16Speaker 6: with it, maybe a slice, and one of the meats
- 9:20Speaker 6: that I love and we actually want people to experience
- 9:24Speaker 6: on Mediterranean is Lamb chops or leg of lamb. Potatoes,
- 9:29Speaker 6: by the way, are not a carbohydrate. Potatoes are a vegetable,
- 9:34Speaker 6: and you can have potatoes the many, many ways that
- 9:38Speaker 6: we fix them. You know, for years they've we've blamed
- 9:41Speaker 6: potatoes as being fattening, but they're not fattening. They're a vegetable.
- 9:46Speaker 6: And what we do here in our country is we
- 9:49Speaker 6: load them up with bacon, butter or sour cream cheese.
- 9:54Speaker 6: I'm trying to think of some of the other things
- 9:56Speaker 6: chives don't count. Nobody that I know ever got fat
- 9:59Speaker 6: from chibe, but we blame the potato, and the potato
- 10:03Speaker 6: is one of the healthiest things you can eat.
- 10:05Speaker 3: One of the things that my that my wife and
- 10:07Speaker 3: I well, I wash the dishes that my wife is
- 10:10Speaker 3: just a thing that my wife makes that we do
- 10:13Speaker 3: it with a lot of meals. Is we buy these
- 10:15Speaker 3: little potatoes. Yes, and olive oil, yes and uh and
- 10:20Speaker 3: yours of right. You know you can put them in
- 10:22Speaker 3: an air fryer, or you can put them in the oven.
- 10:24Speaker 3: It's a parchment paper or whatever. Absolutely delicious.
- 10:26Speaker 6: Absolutely you can have them. You can have them whenever.
- 10:29Speaker 6: They can be a snack. But the nice thing is
- 10:31Speaker 6: that using a good quality olive oil. Don't buy an
- 10:35Speaker 6: olive oil that's five ninety nine because that's not a
- 10:38Speaker 6: pure olive oil. But you want to spend a little
- 10:40Speaker 6: bit for your olive oil. I recommend to trap Ando
- 10:44Speaker 6: because it's a beautiful product and it actually is run
- 10:47Speaker 6: by the Entrappaneau family. They have a vineyard in Sweezy,
- 10:51Speaker 6: Italy and then they send the finished product over here.
- 10:54Speaker 6: It's a high quality product. But olive oil can save
- 10:58Speaker 6: your life. It can clear your arm, and don't take
- 11:01Speaker 6: my word for it. Ask your doctor. If your doctor
- 11:05Speaker 6: is in the know as far as nutrition, ask his
- 11:08Speaker 6: opinion about Mediterranean And then a new recommendation that started
- 11:12Speaker 6: about five six months ago, is right before you go
- 11:15Speaker 6: to bed, take one teaspoon of olive oil and just
- 11:19Speaker 6: swallow it. And while you're sleeping, that olive oil is
- 11:23Speaker 6: doing wonders inside your body to keep things running the
- 11:27Speaker 6: way they should.
- 11:28Speaker 3: As long as they don't run while you're sleeping.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Your fine.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Well, I didn't want to actually take this into that area.
- 11:35Speaker 6: I will, I don't care, but obviously, thank you.
- 11:39Speaker 3: I want to tell you a quick story. I thought
- 11:40Speaker 3: of you the other day, thank you. There was an
- 11:42Speaker 3: article in the Wall Street Journal about a woman who
- 11:45Speaker 3: recently passed. She passed away at the age of one
- 11:48Speaker 3: hundred and seventeen. That did not make me think of you, Okay,
- 11:51Speaker 3: did you say? What made me think of you was
- 11:53Speaker 3: the fact that she lived the biggest part of her
- 11:56Speaker 3: life doing the Mediterranean diet. Now she did do it
- 12:00Speaker 3: as a diet, that's just where she lived.
- 12:03Speaker 1: You know.
- 12:03Speaker 3: She had ties to America, but eventually had moved to Spain.
- 12:07Speaker 3: But you know, and I lived other places, but they
- 12:10Speaker 3: was the Mediterranean diet and they were studying her, and
- 12:14Speaker 3: they she had given them permission at like age at
- 12:17Speaker 3: you know, like age ninety, you know, do whatever you
- 12:19Speaker 3: want to be, study me, you know, do what and
- 12:21Speaker 3: they did it until the time she passed at one
- 12:24Speaker 3: hundred and seventeen. And a couple of the things that
- 12:27Speaker 3: that she did was again, she didn't do the Mediterranean diet.
- 12:32Speaker 3: It's just that was just food, you know, that was
- 12:35Speaker 3: just what the word diet what she ate, I mean,
- 12:37Speaker 3: and it was natural. That's one of the things that
- 12:39Speaker 3: she did. They said that she and they can't They
- 12:41Speaker 3: weren't trying to link the two things necessarily together, but
- 12:44Speaker 3: they said there but but the fact that she had
- 12:48Speaker 3: the body makeup on the inside of like a sixty
- 12:54Speaker 3: year old and a sixty five and they don't know
- 12:56Speaker 3: why they could not figure it out. And and so
- 12:59Speaker 3: it's starting to point toward well, maybe it was the
- 13:02Speaker 3: diet or the lifestyle, I should say.
- 13:04Speaker 6: And when you welcomed me this morning, I said, food
- 13:08Speaker 6: is medicine. And the more that people hear that and
- 13:11Speaker 6: recognize it and eat food that doesn't have chemicals and preservatives,
- 13:16Speaker 6: you know, If you buy mashed potatoes in the grocery store,
- 13:21Speaker 6: they make sure that it's gonna be good still in
- 13:24Speaker 6: fourteen days because they have to load it up with
- 13:26Speaker 6: chemicals and preservatives. If you make mashed potatoes in your
- 13:30Speaker 6: own kitchen, I mean you can eat them, you know,
- 13:33Speaker 6: one meal, two meals, five meals, whatever, But you don't
- 13:37Speaker 6: have to eat foods that are adulterated and hurting your body.
- 13:42Speaker 6: Your body doesn't know what to do with those preservatives
- 13:46Speaker 6: in those chemicals, and that's where problems are caused. Mediterranean
- 13:51Speaker 6: eating doesn't introduce those other additives. That's why it's healthy.
- 13:57Speaker 6: And I love hearing about this woman who made it
- 13:59Speaker 6: to a one hundred and seventeen hundred and seventeen. Now
- 14:02Speaker 6: I don't know that I want to go to one seventeen,
- 14:03Speaker 6: but I don't.
- 14:04Speaker 3: If it's a good one hundred and seventeen. If it
- 14:06Speaker 3: is fine, right, but you know, if I.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Got a check and I want to be able to
- 14:09Speaker 6: drive so I can go where I need to go. Yeah,
- 14:11Speaker 6: My point that I want to make is that it's
- 14:13Speaker 6: great information. More people that are listening near need to
- 14:17Speaker 6: hear that. The open meeting that we're planning is so
- 14:21Speaker 6: that people can come and learn about what we do
- 14:24Speaker 6: and meet other people who are successful with this and
- 14:28Speaker 6: having good health and improved health. And they're losing weight
- 14:32Speaker 6: as well.
- 14:33Speaker 3: All right, real quick, we only get about a minute left.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Next week is trick or treat time? What advice would
- 14:38Speaker 3: you give to parents? Because I mean, it's natural they're
- 14:41Speaker 3: going to want to trick or treat. It's on a
- 14:43Speaker 3: Friday night this year, they're going to want to go
- 14:44Speaker 3: out and get the snickers and so on. You know
- 14:47Speaker 3: you're not, I mean, you're not an absolutist about this thing,
- 14:50Speaker 3: but of course not. I want what advice would you
- 14:52Speaker 3: give to parents or grandparents with their kids on trigger treating?
- 14:54Speaker 6: If they're going to give out candy and you're going
- 14:56Speaker 6: to have some leftover everything, in my mind, have one,
- 15:01Speaker 6: have two. Don't take the bag away from the children
- 15:05Speaker 6: and hide it so that you can eat it. My
- 15:09Speaker 6: point is that say to your child, if there's a
- 15:11Speaker 6: lot left over, let's make it last overtime. Because the
- 15:15Speaker 6: sugar content isn't good for the kids either, but let's
- 15:19Speaker 6: have some overtime. What kind of answer were you looking for?
- 15:23Speaker 3: I knew what answer you'd give me.
- 15:25Speaker 2: That's good.
- 15:25Speaker 6: I wanted you to get it out there to people
- 15:27Speaker 6: because moderation. You know, if somebody like I celebrated my
- 15:32Speaker 6: birthday and I wasn't in town. I was actually in
- 15:34Speaker 6: Maryland visiting with friends, and the group of people that
- 15:38Speaker 6: I was with had a little birthday party for me
- 15:40Speaker 6: on Sunday and they had a little cake and I
- 15:43Speaker 6: had a little taste and it was good, and I
- 15:45Speaker 6: am alive.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Moderation, moderation, all right, give me the details on the
- 15:50Speaker 3: classes again.
- 15:51Speaker 6: November sixth, we're having an open meeting. We meet at
- 15:54Speaker 6: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Canau Boulevard and Elizabeth Street ten
- 16:00Speaker 6: o'clock in the morning and also five thirty in the evening.
- 16:03Speaker 3: What day of the week is that on the episode Thursday?
- 16:05Speaker 3: Hey Ron, Ron, Colonel Ron Hughes, why don't we try
- 16:08Speaker 3: to have Milly on because she's on with us once
- 16:10Speaker 3: a month. Let's try to have you on. Move you
- 16:12Speaker 3: up a little bit next month before then, Oh good,
- 16:14Speaker 3: let's do it the day before. All right, Ron, you
- 16:16Speaker 3: got that? All right? Colonel ronhe is gonna take care.
- 16:18Speaker 6: When did he become a current time?
- 16:20Speaker 3: Sometime during the Civil War? All right? All right, Melie,
- 16:24Speaker 3: I appreciate you being here.
- 16:25Speaker 6: Thank you, Dave.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Thanks Alma.
- 16:27Speaker 6: Certainly my condolence is about the loss that you mentioned earlier.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Kenny Bass Are you do him?

- 19:07Speaker 3: posted about this this morning Wcchsnetwork dot com. The City
- 19:10Speaker 3: of Charleston to getting a bit of a spreued up,
- 19:12Speaker 3: a spruce up, as the story says, one tree at
- 19:14Speaker 3: a time. Lois Crichton is the vice chair of the
- 19:17Speaker 3: Beautification Commission for the City of Charleston, and she joins
- 19:20Speaker 3: us now, good morning.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Welcome to the show, Good morning, thanks for having me.
- 19:23Speaker 3: You have to follow up Millie Snyder. It's kind of
- 19:25Speaker 3: hard to do sometimes.
- 19:26Speaker 2: She's a tough active the follow but I'm gonna try
- 19:28Speaker 2: my vest.
- 19:28Speaker 3: You'll do fine. You'll do fine. First time I've had
- 19:30Speaker 3: you on the show. So nice to meet you. Talk
- 19:33Speaker 3: about the work of this commission overall. What exactly do
- 19:36Speaker 3: you do?
- 19:36Speaker 2: Wonderful.
- 19:37Speaker 12: Yeah, it's an all volunteer commission and it's made up
- 19:40Speaker 12: of twelve individuals from all over the city, different areas
- 19:44Speaker 12: of the city, different backgrounds, and we have a formal
- 19:48Speaker 12: meeting once a month appointed by the mayor. The City
- 19:54Speaker 12: Council confirms us all and we bring all of our
- 19:58Speaker 12: talents to the and it's beautifying the city. We have
- 20:02Speaker 12: responsibility for several parks, passive parks in the city, Ruffner Park,
- 20:06Speaker 12: Davis Park, those kinds of things, and then general beautification
- 20:10Speaker 12: of the city of Charleston. So lots of work gets
- 20:12Speaker 12: done outside of our meetings with very active committees.
- 20:17Speaker 3: He had a tree planning ceremony in front of the
- 20:19Speaker 3: city Hall yesterday. Talk about that.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it was super fun.
- 20:21Speaker 12: So, you know, all brought about by our Mayor Amy Goodwin,
- 20:25Speaker 12: who was just you know, full of enthusiasm and energy.
- 20:29Speaker 12: And in twenty twenty two she kind of reimagined the
- 20:32Speaker 12: commission and said, hey, we got to really get some
- 20:35Speaker 12: things done and make them happen. So she's been a
- 20:38Speaker 12: great supporter. So we had this idea back in April
- 20:42Speaker 12: of twenty twenty two. We sat around the table as
- 20:44Speaker 12: commissioners and said, we need big ideas, we need some change,
- 20:47Speaker 12: we need to shake it up here in Charleston.
- 20:49Speaker 2: And one of the ideas I got thrown on the.
- 20:51Speaker 12: Table was let's do something on the scale of Washington
- 20:55Speaker 12: TC and the cherry Blossom festival, and let's just make
- 20:59Speaker 12: our riverbank beautiful. And that was the really, Jenner, really
- 21:04Speaker 12: the beginning of the idea of planning first one thousand trees.
- 21:07Speaker 12: But I'm gonna say we got an audacious We're starting
- 21:11Speaker 12: at one thousand, but.
- 21:12Speaker 3: We want a thousand and we want more. That's a
- 21:14Speaker 3: pretty big scale when you compared to Washington d C.
- 21:16Speaker 3: So where do the trees come from?
- 21:18Speaker 12: Yeah, So we have partnered with the same group, the
- 21:22Speaker 12: nonprofit group that works with Washington d C. Their name
- 21:26Speaker 12: is Casey Tree. It's a nonprofit organization that they grow
- 21:29Speaker 12: the trees. They're in charge of the canopy for the
- 21:33Speaker 12: City of Washington. They've been with those cherry blossom trees
- 21:37Speaker 12: for years there. So we've partnered with them to get
- 21:40Speaker 12: the you know, the knowledge and the advice, and they
- 21:43Speaker 12: also supply the trees and they grow the trees.
- 21:45Speaker 2: So that's where we purchased the trees from.
- 21:47Speaker 3: So Okay, that I mean, that's I wasn't aware of
- 21:50Speaker 3: this this organization. That's that's pretty good stuff there. Yeah,
- 21:52Speaker 3: I mean, so I'm gonna ask you, like a really
- 21:55Speaker 3: dumb question, why is this so important?
- 21:58Speaker 12: Well, it's important for several reasons. So we look at
- 22:00Speaker 12: it as multi pronged. We look at it as economic development.
- 22:03Speaker 12: We want to make our city attractive so people who
- 22:08Speaker 12: live here can thrive here. We want to bring tourism
- 22:12Speaker 12: to our community. We hope, you know, one day that
- 22:14Speaker 12: we'll get the throngs of people that Washington, d c.
- 22:17Speaker 12: And Japan get to see their cherry blossoms to come
- 22:20Speaker 12: to Charleston.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It also has a lot to.
- 22:22Speaker 12: Do with quality of life and the way people feel
- 22:25Speaker 12: about living in our community. To make it wonderful for
- 22:28Speaker 12: our children has a lot to do with a tree canopy.
- 22:31Speaker 12: So while we're looking at flowering trees and beautification as
- 22:35Speaker 12: our main we're also going to do tree canopies, elms,
- 22:38Speaker 12: and other things that create shade. One of the areas
- 22:42Speaker 12: is you know, Magic Island.
- 22:44Speaker 2: It's a fun place.
- 22:45Speaker 12: We have lots of our families and children that go
- 22:47Speaker 12: out there, but there is not a speck of shade, which.
- 22:51Speaker 3: Is kind of important when we come around regatta time
- 22:53Speaker 3: for example.
- 22:54Speaker 2: That's absolutely right. And you know, trees are great, I
- 22:57Speaker 2: mean trees.
- 22:57Speaker 12: You know, you've got your bird population, your allinator population,
- 23:01Speaker 12: You've got, like I said, the shade.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And it also cleans our air. You know, we have
- 23:05Speaker 2: all these cars.
- 23:06Speaker 12: You know, it's a metro area, so we need to
- 23:09Speaker 12: bring in some you know, ability to clean the air.
- 23:12Speaker 2: So the enjoyment of the community is enhance.
- 23:15Speaker 3: You know, you mentioned the cherry blossoms in d C.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And again, you know there's a ortal difference between Charleston
- 23:20Speaker 3: and d C. We get that. But I got a
- 23:22Speaker 3: buddy of mine that actually lives in d C, and
- 23:24Speaker 3: a couple of times, you know, when I'm talking to
- 23:26Speaker 3: him about one thing or the other, he'll say, well,
- 23:28Speaker 3: it's cherry blossom season here, you know, meaning that you know,
- 23:30Speaker 3: the tourists and everything come in just just to look
- 23:33Speaker 3: at that. Now, it would be nice if we could
- 23:34Speaker 3: get that to Charleston, but I mean they had to
- 23:36Speaker 3: start somewhere too, right.
- 23:38Speaker 2: That is exactly right. That is exactly right.
- 23:40Speaker 12: Well, and it's interesting said that too, because you know,
- 23:42Speaker 12: we talked about this in with the commissions in twenty
- 23:45Speaker 12: twenty two, right, and so we've been planning this. We
- 23:47Speaker 12: just did a whole renovation of Ruffner Park, so we
- 23:50Speaker 12: just wrap that up and so we're ready to kind
- 23:52Speaker 12: of take on our next big thing.
- 23:54Speaker 2: And so we get this call from you know, community people,
- 23:58Speaker 2: and that's you know, I.
- 23:59Speaker 12: Always say it's like the secret sauce on anything good
- 24:02Speaker 12: in a community is to have community involvement. This is
- 24:06Speaker 12: not you know, from the top down. This is all
- 24:08Speaker 12: about all around and bringing everybody together. So we get
- 24:11Speaker 12: these folks and I'm going to tell you there, so
- 24:14Speaker 12: Reverend Jack Lippert Liphart and his daughter Lisa Red reach
- 24:19Speaker 12: out to the commissioners and say, hey, we want to
- 24:21Speaker 12: come talk to you our meetings of public meetings. Right,
- 24:23Speaker 12: anybody's welcome to come. Anybody has something they want us
- 24:26Speaker 12: to look at, think about talk about. We'll either say yep,
- 24:29Speaker 12: in our jurisdiction or no, can't help you.
- 24:31Speaker 13: You know.
- 24:32Speaker 12: So they came to our meeting and they had just
- 24:33Speaker 12: gotten back from visiting DC, and they were all excited
- 24:37Speaker 12: and jazzed up and said.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Why can't we do that here?
- 24:41Speaker 12: And I mean we have the ideal first setting right
- 24:44Speaker 12: all along the river right right, So that's a big
- 24:47Speaker 12: part of it. We're having this capital Connector project that's
- 24:51Speaker 12: happening that I'm sure your listeners are have some familiarity with.
- 24:54Speaker 12: So in line with that, we're gonna you know, we
- 24:57Speaker 12: want to see flowering, blossoming ease on both sides of
- 25:01Speaker 12: our river, right.
- 25:04Speaker 14: Uh.
- 25:04Speaker 12: With that, so we're going to scale up. And so
- 25:06Speaker 12: you say you got to start somewhere. You know, we're audacious,
- 25:10Speaker 12: right right.
- 25:11Speaker 3: You know, nobody told you you couldn't.
- 25:13Speaker 2: No what he told us we couldn't, right, Yeah.
- 25:15Speaker 12: Yeah, So last year we planted one hundred trees around
- 25:18Speaker 12: the city, right, and we're like, all right, we got this.
- 25:20Speaker 2: You know, we figured out.
- 25:21Speaker 12: What's city property, what's state property, what's private property?
- 25:24Speaker 2: Where can we play.
- 25:25Speaker 3: That's a bigger station. Explain that. I didn't mean to
- 25:27Speaker 3: interrupt you, but but explain that how do you how
- 25:33Speaker 3: do you go about that? You know, this is this
- 25:35Speaker 3: is city property, this is state property. This is a
- 25:37Speaker 3: hybrid because sometimes that happens too. Uh and uh and
- 25:41Speaker 3: and and this is private property. How do you make
- 25:43Speaker 3: that DISTINCTIONI yeah.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Well, well it's interesting.
- 25:45Speaker 12: And as I said, you know, we we end up
- 25:47Speaker 12: with commissioners that have all kinds of different backgrounds, right
- 25:50Speaker 12: and and so we have a commissioner who used to
- 25:54Speaker 12: be with the Department of Highways and Department of Transportation,
- 25:58Speaker 12: So we got a little ace in the whole there
- 26:00Speaker 12: who kind of knows how to navigate that world for
- 26:02Speaker 12: us a bit. So finding those places and understanding because
- 26:07Speaker 12: that's you know, people from the community to come back
- 26:09Speaker 12: to us and say, we don't understand.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Why does this look so bad? They were like, oh,
- 26:14Speaker 2: I wish we could help you, but we can't.
- 26:17Speaker 12: So, like I said, we've done a lot of mapping
- 26:19Speaker 12: about to figure out where can we put them, what
- 26:22Speaker 12: is private, what is city property?
- 26:24Speaker 2: Because we really can do only things on city property.
- 26:27Speaker 15: Right.
- 26:28Speaker 12: However, we have made some outreaches to the First Lady
- 26:33Speaker 12: of our state and she is all excited and behind
- 26:38Speaker 12: the idea of including the state Capitol grounds. So this
- 26:43Speaker 12: week we started planning thirty trees, so got to start somewhere,
- 26:47Speaker 12: as she said, yeah, so and some of those trees
- 26:50Speaker 12: we planted on the state Capitol grounds to include.
- 26:55Speaker 3: That, some somebody sent a text here one to what
- 26:57Speaker 3: type of trees.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Oh gosh, that's great. So I knew there would be
- 27:01Speaker 2: someone wonderful. He's the one to talk about the trees.
- 27:05Speaker 12: Okay, So we laugh because we have what we've described
- 27:10Speaker 12: as a tree menu. Okay, so what we're really focusing
- 27:15Speaker 12: is predominantly spring flowering trees. That's our you know, things
- 27:20Speaker 12: such as Japanese maples or excuse me, Japanese cherries, other cherries,
- 27:24Speaker 12: crab apples, plums, service berries, dogwoods, red buds, magnolias, fringe trees.
- 27:33Speaker 2: So you know, many of your.
- 27:34Speaker 12: Viewers listeners are probably aware of those. But we're also
- 27:38Speaker 12: going to focus on trees such as maples and elms
- 27:41Speaker 12: and other types of species that are important for urban canopy.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Is how we refer to it.
- 27:49Speaker 12: So, and I want your viewers or listeners to understand
- 27:53Speaker 12: that we've really carefully considered what we're going to put
- 27:55Speaker 12: where it's I'm going to tell you challenging is planting
- 27:59Speaker 12: urban trees, right because just the environment we're in, you know,
- 28:02Speaker 12: we got cars, we've got people, we got you know,
- 28:05Speaker 12: everybody's you know, the sidewalks bumple up.
- 28:08Speaker 2: I mean, we got it. We try to manage it
- 28:10Speaker 2: the very best we coult.
- 28:11Speaker 12: It's just challenging and survivability is challenging. So we're thinking
- 28:15Speaker 12: about that as well. So we've consulted with the West
- 28:19Speaker 12: Virginia Division of Forestry. Great partners from us, and can't
- 28:23Speaker 12: say enough about Chris Higgins. For those of you who
- 28:26Speaker 12: may not know, Chris Higgins is our city arborist. He
- 28:30Speaker 12: spends a lot of time at spring Hill.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Chris has been on the show in the past.
- 28:34Speaker 12: There you go spring Hill Cemetery, which is our ratch
- 28:38Speaker 12: Tree Arboretum. We have I think four you know, legendary
- 28:41Speaker 12: trees you know in the tree world that exists up there.
- 28:45Speaker 12: And this relationship with Casey Tree that I mentioned earlier
- 28:49Speaker 12: out of Washington, d C. So they really helped us
- 28:52Speaker 12: come up with that list and that tree menu. So
- 28:55Speaker 12: we will be publishing that so that you all can
- 28:58Speaker 12: see exactly, you know, what it is. And what's important
- 29:02Speaker 12: to when you think about planting trees is you don't
- 29:05Speaker 12: want a monoculture ray. You do not want to have
- 29:08Speaker 12: one species of a tree, because that is not healthy.
- 29:12Speaker 12: You have trees that you know have different, different lifespans
- 29:16Speaker 12: and different things, and you also have to be careful
- 29:18Speaker 12: about disease. And so in picking the trees, we've tried
- 29:21Speaker 12: to pick trees that you know have vitality and we
- 29:25Speaker 12: know that you know do well in environments that we're
- 29:27Speaker 12: planning them in. So happy to share that tree list
- 29:31Speaker 12: with everyone. So the people, and you know everybody has
- 29:34Speaker 12: geeks out on the Latin names and.
- 29:35Speaker 2: The botanical names. We've got all that for you.
- 29:37Speaker 3: It's all the things. Yes, sir, it is twenty three
- 29:40Speaker 3: minutes away from Tama Day Island show on five Any
- 29:42Speaker 3: Live brought to you a part by MORGANE. Morgan. If
- 29:44Speaker 3: you're injured to hire Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury
- 29:46Speaker 3: law firm. We did have a text that said, and
- 29:49Speaker 3: you already answered it, but I'll read the text. Will
- 29:51Speaker 3: there be an arborist or a tree professional taking care
- 29:54Speaker 3: of these trees? As good as a job that city
- 29:56Speaker 3: workers do. They tend to plant trees too deep and
- 29:59Speaker 3: make multi volcanoes that inhabit proper inhibit rather, i'm sorry,
- 30:04Speaker 3: proper root growth. So they answered that question though, but.
- 30:07Speaker 12: I'm delighted that people care that much and understand and
- 30:11Speaker 12: know that much. So that's fantastic. So yeah, we will
- 30:14Speaker 12: will absolutely and we're actually going to hire an outside
- 30:17Speaker 12: firm to do the planning of the trees because in
- 30:19Speaker 12: our research and our studies, what we've determined is it's
- 30:22Speaker 12: vital right, you got to get a planner correctly, right,
- 30:26Speaker 12: So we're going to go to an outside consultant, you know,
- 30:28Speaker 12: affirm to be able to do those because this is
- 30:30Speaker 12: a big undertaking you know, our city employees, while they
- 30:33Speaker 12: are fantastic, and a big shout out to Brent Webster
- 30:36Speaker 12: who does a fantastic job, you know, for caring for
- 30:41Speaker 12: our city. So but yes, we will absolutely take that
- 30:44Speaker 12: into consideration. I appreciate the feedback.
- 30:47Speaker 3: What's your timeline looking like here?
- 30:48Speaker 12: Okay, Well, like I said, we've got a thousand trees,
- 30:52Speaker 12: and we're saying over the next three years, we've like
- 30:55Speaker 12: I said, we've got thirty this week, nine hundred and
- 30:57Speaker 12: seventy to go. So what our hope is is, and
- 31:01Speaker 12: what's been really great is we've just gotten a you know,
- 31:04Speaker 12: wellspring of support for this financially, people sharing you know,
- 31:11Speaker 12: good good habits or good practices with us as well.
- 31:15Speaker 12: So our initial timeline is to do it in three years.
- 31:19Speaker 12: So you know, what we've done is, like I said,
- 31:23Speaker 12: we've set out this thousand. What we really want, we
- 31:26Speaker 12: want two to three thousand. Right that that's our that's
- 31:28Speaker 12: our big audacious.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Plan, right, that's what we want to want to do
- 31:32Speaker 2: with this.
- 31:32Speaker 12: So so right now, what we've done is we we've
- 31:35Speaker 12: set up a funding mechanism, right, We've got city money.
- 31:39Speaker 12: One of the things when the mayor kind of redid
- 31:42Speaker 12: the commission in twenty twenty two is shit, gave us
- 31:45Speaker 12: some money for goodness sakes, right, you can't just make
- 31:48Speaker 12: things beautiful without a budget, right, So we have some money,
- 31:51Speaker 12: so that's good. And then we also have some private
- 31:54Speaker 12: funders that have come in, the Jacobsen Foundation, one of
- 31:58Speaker 12: our early supporters there, the Canau Garden Club, who's again
- 32:04Speaker 12: and again supports beautification product projects across.
- 32:07Speaker 2: The city for money.
- 32:09Speaker 12: So this is our hope, is it's what we'll do
- 32:12Speaker 12: a big, big push early in the spring and hope

- 44:15Speaker 3: I had to laugh at one of the comments on

- 44:21Speaker 3: complained about the mayor and the events and said, quote,
- 44:25Speaker 3: there's nothing for people of color. That was an exact
- 44:30Speaker 3: quote from somebody on one of the TV news sites yesterday.
- 44:33Speaker 3: That may very well be the most racist thing that

- 48:25Speaker 3: a Donald Trump fan. He's a president of the United
- 48:28Speaker 3: States and I want him to succeed, But personally I'm
- 48:32Speaker 3: not necessarily a fan, but I always want the president
- 48:35Speaker 3: to do well. Anyway, this whole hooplaw over him putting
- 48:40Speaker 3: a ballroom in the White House. Here's what I say
- 48:46Speaker 3: to that. So what it's private donations And if you're
- 48:52Speaker 3: keeping score at home, Every president, every president or first
- 48:58Speaker 3: lady has made significant changes to the White House. It
- 49:02Speaker 3: comes with being president. The West Wing was very controversial
- 49:07Speaker 3: when it was first announced by Teddy Roosevelt. Harry Truman
- 49:14Speaker 3: completely rebuilt the White House. Every president and or first lady,
- 49:22Speaker 3: everyone has done something to the White House. Gerald Ford
- 49:26Speaker 3: added a pool, Lady Bird, Johnson redesigned the East garden.
- 49:33Speaker 3: Taft made the Oval office, and there's so many jokes
- 49:37Speaker 3: there that I might go in toward made it actually oval.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Uh fdr included an indoor pool for himself. Nixon added
- 49:47Speaker 3: a bowling alley, and we don't even want to talk
- 49:50Speaker 3: about what Bill Clinton did in there. So I mean,
- 49:54Speaker 3: I'm sorry to poet to quote my good friend Pastor Collins,
- 49:59Speaker 3: miss me, miss me with that outrage. I like you,
- 50:03Speaker 3: and I saw the footage on television of you know,
- 50:05Speaker 3: the cranes and what being taken to the back of
- 50:07Speaker 3: the White House. I didn't particularly care for it either,
- 50:09Speaker 3: to be honest with you. But he's the president duly
- 50:14Speaker 3: elected president, and every president and every first lady has
- 50:19Speaker 3: done something to the White House. So comes comes with
- 50:25Speaker 3: the title on the door. But Dave Island showing five

- 50:49Speaker 15: East wing off yesterday.
- 50:50Speaker 3: And if you saw this, I.
- 50:51Speaker 15: Don't care for that. Make it. I put it there
- 50:54Speaker 15: on the grounds that's fine. Just I wouldn't have altered

- 51:13Speaker 3: I'm more concerned with what's going on with governmental shutdowns. Oh, Yeah,
- 51:16Speaker 3: I'm more concerned with what's going on in Argentina than
- 51:19Speaker 3: I am whether the president puts a ballroom on there
- 51:21Speaker 3: that's going to be used by other presidents after I'm not.
- 51:27Speaker 3: I don't really care that much. Yeah, just I mean,
