- 1:05And then we'll get into the Chiefs with our guy Nick Athen
- 1:08from what the hell is Nick working now?
- 1:11He's got some chiefs blitz.com, Chiefs blitz.com.
- 1:15Nick will join us, get his thoughts.
- 1:17You know that one play by the way?
- 1:18Well, you know what, We'll get to the Chiefs in a second.
- 1:20Let's start with the here now and Monday Night Football.
- 1:22Last night really was tailed 2 games, right?
- 1:25Tailed to two quarterbacks. You're thinking, all right,
- 1:27Caleb took a step. Your one to your two.
- 1:29What a difference Ben Johnson makes.
- 1:31Then they ran out of scripted plays, damn it, and it just went
- 1:36all wrong. And then the second-half they
- 1:37got Flores. I'm sorry, Brian Flores, A
- 1:40defensive coordinator for the Vikings, is as good as there is,
- 1:42I think, in the business. And JJ McCarthy, after throwing
- 1:46the pick 6, looked like a different quarterback.
- 1:50The Vikings win somehow. Yeah, I have no idea how.
- 1:53Miss field goals in this day and age where you have, I don't
- 1:57know, 60-70 a hundred guys that can kick 60 yarders?
- 2:00Yep. Sitting on the street, the Bears
- 2:02bring back Cairo Santos that struggles to kick 45 yarders.
- 2:05Yep, when you need a ball through the end zone, can't do
- 2:07it. Can't do it because he's
- 2:08physically unable to do it. And it's just yet more of the
- 2:11ineptitude of the same old, same old crappy Bears organization.
- 2:15Here comes the new guru. Well, he looks a lot like Mark
- 2:18Tressman. He looks a lot like Not Chuck.
- 2:20Maggie. What's that idiot's name?
- 2:22The other Maggie. Matt Maggie.
- 2:24Yeah, he looks like more of the same.
- 2:25It is a bunch of pomp and circumstance and nothing behind
- 2:29it. It is the same garbage year
- 2:31after year after year. This organization sucks.
- 2:36Period kick the ball out of bounds that that didn't run
- 2:39through his head and nobody, nobody got in his head.
- 2:42First year head coach, you know his offense coordinator that
- 2:45probably wasn't. But he's the smartest guy out
- 2:47there. Well, you have to worry, but
- 2:48we're told other duties as a sign.
- 2:50That wasn't part of his time in in Detroit.
- 2:52To know that kick the ball out of bounds, you're fine.
- 2:54That 2 seconds was massive with that time out.
- 2:57With only one time out remaining.
- 2:58Absolutely, but because they've lost one in a Hawkinson a
- 3:01challenge was just ridiculous. His knee was down, he was down,
- 3:05he was down, down by contact. Knee and the hip.
- 3:08Wasted away. Smartest guy in the room though.
- 3:10Oh my God. Didn't look like it.
- 3:12He didn't. Caleb Williams missing open
- 3:14receivers. He missed a touchdown.
- 3:17He did, he did, but they scored on that drive.
- 3:20But still they'll take time off the clock, which which obviously
- 3:23comes into play and was a factor in that.
- 3:25But wide open receiver, that 4th down gamble, I think it was a
- 3:28doomsday. Open right over the middle.
- 3:31That's a window if you're an NFL quarterback you have to make.
- 3:34And going back earlier when they went four down, 4th down, don't
- 3:36get it. Kick a field goal there.
- 3:38Missed a field goal. Missed a field goal.
- 3:40Just on and on and on. And the penalties, I mean, they
- 3:43have a dozen. And what did we hear?
- 3:45Oh, the changing of the culture. There Yeah, how many pre snap
- 3:48penalties they have in that game?
- 3:49Locked in, undisciplined and disaster.
- 3:53It's again. It's the same old, same old in
- 3:55Chicago. It is.
- 3:57I couldn't wait to get up and get to work today.
- 3:59Your thoughts on JJ McCarthy? It was awful Early.
- 4:03Yep. Awful.
- 4:04Yep. Good late after the pick six of
- 4:06all things, right? And he's got the right guy, as
- 4:09you said with KOC, that he's got the right guy.
- 4:12However, I also remember who he was going up against.
- 4:17Jalen Johnson wasn't there. A lot of the defense was
- 4:20missing. But the defense was pretty good
- 4:21early in that furlough game. But they got tired.
- 4:24I don't know if Edwards is making that play, but there
- 4:29were. This was the skeleton carps
- 4:32corpse of the the Bears defense. Certainly secondary, yeah.
- 4:35And because of that, and then the guy that made the play that
- 4:37was on the Vikings practice squad, he also left the game
- 4:40with an injury and that didn't look very good, non contact
- 4:42injury when he went. Down.
- 4:44He was slamming his hands in the ground.
- 4:45So if you want to sit here and think that, you got it right.
- 4:48No, no, no, I'm just saying that from what we saw in the first
- 4:51half, Look, let me read you a text I got in the first half.
- 4:54I got a chuckle out of this one because I love fans.
- 4:57I mean, that's what's what makes our job so fun, right?
- 5:02Where is it? Donald won 14 games.
- 5:06JJ can't even get a first down. It was bad, it was bad, it was
- 5:10bad. He still finished.
- 5:12Finally threw a touchdown that was after the pick 6. 13 of 20
- 5:16for 1:40. Three, I think I saw something
- 5:18that I don't follow analytics like the 2030 forty 50 year olds
- 5:24do, right? It's not part of my game.
- 5:26Was he the highest rated quarterback yet this weekend?
- 5:29JJ McCarthy. Think so.
- 5:30I wouldn't either. He had a 98.5 traditional NFL
- 5:33rating. And and was that the highest of
- 5:35the week? I think that's the one, Trent.
- 5:38Really. 9898.5 Jaden Daniels was second.
- 5:44Well, that rating needs to be. Thrown.
- 5:45I totally agree with you. I was blown away.
- 5:48And you know what other one does?
- 5:49You know who was the 24th ranked quarterback this weekend?
- 5:52The quarterback that threw 4 touchdown passes.
- 5:54Oh really? Yes, Aaron Rodgers was the 24.
- 5:57What I hate analytics. Well, that, that's the, I mean
- 6:01that quarterback rating's been around for decades.
- 6:02Yeah, but you know what? It's just it's one of those
- 6:04stats that seem to get pick up more steam with Twitter and you
- 6:08and you can find it easier, right?
- 6:10We watched sports before we knew who's good and who sucked right
- 6:14back in the day. JJ McCarthy, Jerry's out to be
- 6:17determined. Right, But you know what?
- 6:19I here's what I'll say. If you're a Vikings fan today,
- 6:22obviously the first half, you think you're a good God.
- 6:24More this you at least hit the pillow last night with hope.
- 6:29With hope, yes. Right.
- 6:30Caleb Williams, on the other hand, you hit the pillow, man of
- 6:33God. It's the same thing.
- 6:34It kind of felt like that and it didn't early.
- 6:37I'll say this about Caleb Williams.
- 6:39He's a tough SOB to get on the ground.
- 6:41Some of his better plays last night when he's running the
- 6:43football and and these Vikings, they'll get after you.
- 6:46This is a really good defense. And they went away from it they
- 6:49in the second-half. When they're just up the middle.
- 6:51The smartest guy in the world couldn't figure out to move him
- 6:55to get him outside. They made him a pocket passer
- 6:59and with pressure off the middle and Gordon against Flores,
- 7:02where's a drag or something across the middle something
- 7:04quick, get it out quickly. Nope. 5 seven step drops and
- 7:07hope and pray with your God awful tackles because the Bears
- 7:10going to be OK. Because the Bears have
- 7:12receivers. They've got receivers, yeah.
- 7:14They've got 2 tight ends. They got 2 tight ends.
- 7:17I agree. It's not weapons they have a
- 7:18fine running. Back they do.
- 7:20It's awful tackle play, awful play calling, and an inability
- 7:24to realize that you need to use maybe Caleb Williams greatest
- 7:27asset, his legs more than they were willing to do.
- 7:31The Lions or the Bears? One of those teams will be on 2
- 7:34after this week. Ought to be the Bears.
- 7:36Ben Johnson going back to DEET. Oh yeah.
- 7:40Survivor play for you, baby. I don't like playing divisional
- 7:43games. But this one might be on your
- 7:45list. This one seems that now the
- 7:46Lions of course, playing. Wow, who do they?
- 7:49Who do they have? Their Thanksgiving game is
- 7:52against the Packers at. Home saving the Packers.
- 7:55Got to say both of them. Got to do, got to do.
- 7:58Although this week, the night game on, on Thanksgiving.
- 8:02I, I love the fact we're one week into it, right and we're
- 8:04puffing on our chest. We got this all figured out.
- 8:07We've never seen October. I didn't year 1 you.
- 8:10Didn't year one year what the first week of October?
- 8:13Yes, we're already saving teams. But do you want to win it?
- 8:16It's not about making it to week.
- 8:17No, I know it's not about waking it making it to Week 9.
- 8:20It's about winning the thing. And that's what.
- 8:21You have to do. Do you blow Baltimore this week?
- 8:23No, too early. Why?
- 8:26They're a cinch, right? You move from Week 2 to Week 3.
- 8:29If you use Baltimore, they're not losing, they're not going.
- 8:31To I'm not in this to survive to Week 7.
- 8:34I'm here to win it. If I'm going to invest the
- 8:36money, I'm going to do it to try to win the contest.
- 8:38And this will be a good one for Mike Palmway joins us on Friday.
- 8:40Will more people look to get out of their tickets because of the
- 8:43pools, 18,000,000 this year, $18,786,000, something like
- 8:50that. That's crazy.
- 8:51Last year we thought it was bananas and it was when it when
- 8:54it touched past 14,000,000. It's almost 19,000,000 this
- 8:59year. I think more people will be
- 9:00looking to sell their tickets if they get to, you know, middle of
- 9:03October, maybe November, keep a little piece of it and sell it
- 9:06to some of the syndicates out there that buy these things up.
- 9:09And maybe pay for my next 5 or something.
- 9:11That's just it, right? Right, my next 5 donations into
- 9:15the the pool that I'll I'm sure be doing the next few years.
- 9:18So can I go back to the point about when I've introduced that
- 9:21Nick Athens could be on the program?
- 9:22You know what I fear is going to happen when it comes to the
- 9:26Kansas City Chiefs? Did you see much of the Chiefs
- 9:28game? You.
- 9:28I knew you were working. You had a high school football
- 9:31game. Yeah.
- 9:31Just I mean the end, so. You didn't see him.
- 9:34Did you see him scramble and run out of the And normally what's
- 9:40the quarterback going to do? He's going to run out of bounds.
- 9:41Yeah. And he laid a hit on the DB that
- 9:45came up and the next DB that comes up's got to have that
- 9:48planted in his mind that I got to be ready for this because
- 9:51this a hole. And he is, when you do that,
- 9:53Just tried to lay me out. Well, how are the officials
- 9:56going to handle that? Because they look at him
- 9:57differently, Trent. Well, he's not alone.
- 9:59Oh I know, but he's probably at the head of the class.
- 10:02They looked at 15 differently because he is one of the bell
- 10:05cows of the league. As they should.
- 10:07OK, but what will they do? Because this guy, no, you can no
- 10:11longer take for granted that Mahomes is a going to go out of
- 10:14bounds because we've seen that before.
- 10:16When he fakes to go out of bounds, DB lays off.
- 10:18There was last year because he doesn't want to get flagged and
- 10:22all of a sudden Mahomes said I'm going to stay in and get another
- 10:2410 yards. Well, this time he's an inch
- 10:26away from going out of bounds. He lays out the DB.
- 10:29If you're ADB, what are you going to do?
- 10:31Hit him? Hit him?
- 10:32Yeah. What are the what are the
- 10:33officials going to do? Flag him.
- 10:35If it's in bounds though. No quarterback got to protect
- 10:38him. You just said it, just said it.
- 10:41I am so anxious to see. What do you want to have?
- 10:43I want him to play like step out of bounds, not have two sets of
- 10:47rules for #15 in red. But that's not what it is.
- 10:51You're a fan. You're being too much of a fan.
- 10:53No, it drives me crazy with this guy.
- 10:56They give him their own set of rules.
- 10:58Nope. We got to do it differently from
- 11:00home. We can't get him hurt, but then
- 11:01when he tries to hurt somebody because he's pulling up because
- 11:04he doesn't want to get a flag, he tries to lay him out.
- 11:07That was a Bush league play. Josh Allen.
- 11:10Josh Allen will knock his Josh Allen doesn't need that kind of
- 11:13attention. He doesn't.
- 11:14Huh. He's 6 foot six, 240 lbs.
- 11:16He should be a Bronco. John Elwick, physical runner,
- 11:20right. He lay a hit on a linebacker.
- 11:24Too, the rules were different back then.
- 11:26The quarterbacks didn't have this their own set of rules.
- 11:29They were a football player. So Patrick Mahomes isn't a
- 11:33meanwhile. That he is, but then when they
- 11:34get near the sidelines got to protect them.
- 11:37I don't know where to go with this.
- 11:39I'm anxious to see what happens because I know damn well what's
- 11:42going to happen and I think 99% of the listening audience that
- 11:46doesn't go to bed in their chiefs pyjamas feels the same
- 11:49way I do about this. I think you feel this way
- 11:52because. I hate the Chiefs.
- 11:53Yeah, I hate the Chiefs. I used to hate the Chiefs.
- 11:56That's. Why you feel this way?
- 11:58This is. They've won the division nine
- 12:00straight years, right? I'm 66 years old, right?
- 12:07Yeah, it's it's kind of overdue that this team is not
- 12:10representing the AFC West. And I'm here to tell you that
- 12:14they're not this year because I think there's a new sheriff in
- 12:16town after this weekend. What we saw the team that beat
- 12:20the Chiefs. Oh yeah, it's happening this
- 12:23year. Well, did you see the Chargers
- 12:24play? They looked really good.
- 12:25And, you know, in particular, it looked really good.
- 12:28Herbert. Yeah, we've seen Herbert.
- 12:30Looking before, Yep. Let's see it for a full season.
- 12:33Let's see it in a big game. Let's see the.
- 12:34Players look good. His offensive line looked good.
- 12:37The defense has always been adequate.
- 12:39They've got a kicker. They've got a head coach.
- 12:42This might be the year for the Chargers, not maybe to win a
- 12:45Super Bowl, because I still think it's Baltimore or Buffalo,
- 12:48one of the bees in the AFC. But the Chargers team looks like
- 12:52they're ready to, you know, take a step.
- 12:55Did you buy any chargers before the year?
- 12:57How do? You know, every year.
- 12:59Them and the Bengals. I I've heard for the last, well,
- 13:03eight years that happened with the Chiefs.
- 13:05I've heard that this is going to be the Chargers time.
- 13:07I've heard these all before. Behave the Holmes, I've heard it
- 13:10all. And I just hate the way that he
- 13:12gets it. He, he, there's a Owens, there's
- 13:14a patch of my home set of rules and then there's the other 31
- 13:16starting quarterbacks. But it's not that way.
- 13:18Seems like it is. I see quarterbacks all the time
- 13:22get protected. It's not just Patrick Mahomes.
- 13:24It's because they're in private spots.
- 13:26Well, that could be, yes. You see them a lot more.
- 13:28That could be than anybody else. That's true.
- 13:30And the protections are there. And on top of it, you're seeing
- 13:32red, literally and figuratively, because it's the team that you
- 13:36despise. Scream and get them anyways.
- 13:40We'll see, because it's going to come up.
- 13:41You know damn well that's going to do that.
- 13:43Who do they have? Oh, they've got Philadelphia.
- 13:45Absolutely. My God.
- 13:47Owen 2 hole. What's happening?
- 13:4902 hole? What's the number on that game?
- 13:53Have you seen as Chiefs? 1 1/2.
- 13:55Are they're favoured? They are.
- 13:58That's kind of surprising to me. Is it?
- 14:00Yeah. You were that impressed by
- 14:01Philadelphia? Not really.
- 14:03But I wasn't, I wasn't impressed by the by the Chiefs.
- 14:08And if traps Kelsey takes an extra step on that ball, we can
- 14:11be talking completely different about that game.
- 14:13Too. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:14Inside the table. Yep.
- 14:15Nope, You're right, You're right.
- 14:17Is is there a game this week that just stands out to you from
- 14:20a betting perspective? Because I think I've.
- 14:21Got one the, I believe, overreaction.
- 14:25Yeah, it was there beforehand, right?
- 14:27Atlanta getting 4 1/2 in Minnesota seems like a lot.
- 14:29That seems like a ton in that game that I think is going to be
- 14:32a really good one that comes down the wire.
- 14:34That's one of my that's one of nuts on my list.
- 14:37Was a little bit surprised not to see the Steelers north of a
- 14:40field goal. They host Seattle.
- 14:43I thought that thing would be a tick higher in that 3 1/2 range.
- 14:46It's inside of that. Seattle taking the long trip
- 14:49after losing the divisional game in a tough one against San
- 14:52Francisco. That was a little bit of a
- 14:53surprise and the team that you saw a lot on Sunday afternoon.
- 14:57That's where I'm going, Trent. The Titans, with that defense,
- 15:01they're good at home, getting 5 1/2.
- 15:03They're good. Now we'll see about camp.
- 15:06You were impressed even though the stats didn't, I thought.
- 15:09He was the best quarterback on the field.
- 15:11And the Rams team talk about an escape.
- 15:13Yep, Yep, Texans are driving with the ball inside the 30.
- 15:17Because of the fact that it's the Rams and the country still
- 15:20thinks the Titans stink, might that number go to six?
- 15:24Six. Because that's a big number if
- 15:26you can get 6 opposed to 5 1/2. Is that going to be a survivor
- 15:30play? The Tennessee Titans.
- 15:32No, no, no, the Rams. Well, I hope so me.
- 15:34Too. I really do because I think the
- 15:36Tennessee's got a chance to pick them off.
- 15:38Because yeah, a ton of people will be on the Ravens for sure
- 15:40at home against Cleveland. I think we're going to split in
- 15:42both of our picks. Both of them, Yeah.
- 15:44I'm trying to talk the group into it.
- 15:45Split in between the two. Just go in Baltimore, Both of
- 15:48them. Baltimore, Baltimore.
- 15:49Baltimore. Baltimore.
- 15:50What do the Ravens have? Play Thanksgiving.
- 15:53They play Thanksgiving. Against the Bengals.
- 15:56So you're going to cut it down then to only five teams
- 16:00available and you don't love the Lions, what you saw in Week 1?
- 16:04I don't like the Packers on the road.
- 16:06Packers. So the Packers and the Lions
- 16:12played last Thanksgiving, didn't they?
- 16:14I can't remember. Who did The Who did what did the
- 16:17Packers? Was that two years ago when the
- 16:19Packers are really bad and they beat the Lions on Thanksgiving?
- 16:25Let's see, 2024. No, it was last year.
- 16:29It was Lions, Bears, Cowboys, Giants, Packers.
- 16:33Did the Bears beat the Packers last year on Thanksgiving?
- 16:36Well, they would have played the Lions.
- 16:39I don't know. I I remember the I I thought the
- 16:41Packers upset somebody. No, you don't remember.
- 16:46All right. So Green Bay, Detroit, Kansas
- 16:49City, Dallas. Sensi Bolt.
- 16:54I don't know. We'll see.
- 16:55Long way to go. I got to get there first, all
- 16:57right? Baseball for what the What are
- 16:59you seeing in MLB as Tuesdays and Wednesdays are for baseball
- 17:02after all. Awful start last night from
- 17:05Imanaka gets blown up in the 1st.
- 17:07What happened? I saw they were down 3.
- 17:09Nothing very early. Yes, gave up an early one did.
- 17:12Anybody in Chicago notice? No, probably not.
- 17:15No, Twins got a win last night. Oh boy.
- 17:18Yeah, didn't, didn't watch a pitch.
- 17:21Trent, they've now moved to 12 games back in the wild card.
- 17:24Oh nice, yet to be eliminated. Oh, still alive?
- 17:27Still, mathematically, the only team that's been eliminated in
- 17:31the American League, the White Sox.
- 17:33Meanwhile, in the National League, the Rockies have
- 17:36officially helped. Are we?
- 17:37Going to get Yankees, Red Sox in the first round.
- 17:39That's what I'm hoping for. Wild card round.
- 17:43No, because I don't think that I think the Jays are going to
- 17:45follow the wild card. You do.
- 17:46I do. Bullpens bad.
- 17:48Yeah, bullpens. I think the Yankees will.
- 17:50I think the Yankees will prevail.
- 17:52But I would love to see Yankees and Red Sox, one of those two
- 17:54teams obviously get knocked out early in this bad boy.
- 17:57All right. Dame Mazatani next.
- 17:58He covers the Vikings. twincities.com, Saint Paul
- 18:01Pioneer Press will get his thoughts.
- 18:03I wonder if he had started his column already and had to
- 18:06restart it at any point. Oh, I'm sure we'll ask him about
- 18:10that as the Vikings win on Monday.
- 18:12Sunday Night Football. Miller and Condon underweights
- 18:14Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 18:18Network. I'm Hillary Condon.
- 18:26Welcome back Iowa sports radio network.
- 18:28Trenton Ken with you until 2O clock at that time off the
- 18:32bench, Sean Roberts Lucas trained 2 until 5 working on
- 18:36Dane Mazatani travelling back from Chicago.
- 18:40Hopefully will be able to run him down, but potentially travel
- 18:42plans of throwing a monkey wrench in the thing.
- 18:45If not today, tomorrow we will talk to Dane at some point.
- 18:49The 49ers, who have their own injury troubles have also
- 18:53released their kicker Jake Moody.
- 18:55Surprised actually it took this long.
- 18:57I mean, he's he has not been good for them and then to you
- 19:01know to have the troubles that he had.
- 19:02Did you see much of that game? I did not.
- 19:04I just saw that Purdy's finally, I guess there.
- 19:07I mean, it was a touchdown and how it was a touchdown.
- 19:10He got really lucky. I thought Seattle seemingly had
- 19:13a chance to win that game, but they didn't give the Niners full
- 19:16credit for going on the road. Where are you on that team?
- 19:19Got to be healthy and when the McCaffrey thing popped up on
- 19:22Thursday last week. Could you believe it?
- 19:23Oh my God, after not being on it all week, right?
- 19:26And all of a sudden that pops up and then Friday, I'll be fine.
- 19:29I'll be fine and he looked good. I mean the the clips that I saw,
- 19:32he looked fine out there. But the Purdy injury, the Kittle
- 19:35injury, which sounds pretty significant, I'll play.
- 19:38Him on the IR, so he's going to miss at least four weeks.
- 19:40This is a team that had to pay guys.
- 19:42They don't have the same depth that they had, you know, 2-3
- 19:45years ago. And with that, you get really
- 19:47concerned quickly, as we saw a year ago, when injuries start to
- 19:49pile up, when you don't have the same kind of depth, it happens
- 19:53really, really fast. So I would be pretty concerned
- 19:56right now if I was a Niners fan. Is there a team that that you
- 20:01not necessarily because look, they're they're Owen one if it's
- 20:03if they got off to a bad start. So clearly everything is fine
- 20:06except for the Dolphins. And that's not fine, no.
- 20:10But is there a team that you. Oh boy, maybe I missed on this
- 20:14one. I wish I didn't have all these
- 20:15futures on X because they look nowhere near like I thought that
- 20:19they were going. To be well, it's not really a
- 20:20futures thing, but when we did our picks, I took Atlanta to win
- 20:24the South and I don't feel awful about it.
- 20:27Still. What?
- 20:28Kind of game did Penix have. He was pretty solid.
- 20:30Now they were awful inside the red zone and they were aided and
- 20:33he died for the end zone at one point.
- 20:34Is he a better? Is he?
- 20:35More of a threat to run than to throw at this point in his
- 20:37career, no. No, he's not a good runner.
- 20:39Athleticism's never been. Certainly one of the strengths
- 20:42for him. I thought he was OK.
- 20:44Yeah, the numbers paint that he was great.
- 20:45He wasn't great, but I thought he was OK against that Tampa
- 20:48team. They got some dude they'll come
- 20:49after. You too.
- 20:49I think Tampa's gonna be a major factor in the NFC.
- 20:52Absolutely, Anabuka. On the weapon, yeah.
- 20:55Godwin will be back here pretty quick and that team's scary.
- 20:58I hope Godwin takes his time because rookie rookie of the
- 21:01year tickets like 28 to one on him and he right, he looks like
- 21:05he absolutely belongs. They're going to be a they're
- 21:07going to be a factor, especially in that division, right?
- 21:09Saints are God awful, Panthers are terrible.
- 21:12It seemed like it was going to be a two team race going into
- 21:14it. It seems like it's still going
- 21:16to be a two team race and obviously Tampa has the leg up
- 21:20with the winner on that. I want to say one more thing
- 21:22about the Monday night game last night and I was going to save it
- 21:26for Dane. But when we get Dane later on, I
- 21:29don't want to forget because there was a lot of social media
- 21:33about this. Jim Carnellison, the anthem
- 21:36singer. I mean, it's as good of a
- 21:39national anthem as as I believe that there is out there, right?
- 21:41And as a hockey fan, I've heard him do dozens of them.
- 21:45Because he does all the Blackhawk.
- 21:46Sure. And when The Jets are playing in
- 21:48the United Center, of course I get to hear it.
- 21:51And then when they were making the runs through the cups and
- 21:53what was it, 911 and 13 or 1113 and 15, whatever those 3 cups
- 21:59were to begin that decade of the teens, we got a lot of Jim
- 22:02Cornellis. But my God, could.
- 22:04What a set of pipe. Strength.
- 22:06Yes, what a set of pipe. It's different than, I think
- 22:08what we're kind of used to for a lot of people when it comes to
- 22:11the anthem. But he does it a different.
- 22:13Way he just starts out just right.
- 22:14There's no build up no to this thing.
- 22:16He just 100 miles an hour off the bat.
- 22:19He he's done playoff games for the Bears before.
- 22:22You mentioned the Indy 500 before.
- 22:23We did do that, right? He he sings back home again in
- 22:26Indiana. The song that they play, yeah,
- 22:29preceding it. He's tremendous.
- 22:31It really gets you revved up. It really does, but I I found
- 22:35out last night that not a lot of well, people imagine say that
- 22:38it's hard to gauge, but people found found him for the first
- 22:41time just blown away as I think I probably was the first time I
- 22:44ever heard him sing the national anthem anthem.
- 22:48What a treat, Jack. Thanks for being patient, Jack.
- 22:50How are you? What's on your mind?
- 22:53Boys, how are you this morning? Well, well.
- 22:54Well, thank you. Good, good.
- 22:57I want to talk a little smack to your partner, Mr. Condon.
- 23:01We are playing this week in KXNOS.
- 23:06Fantasy. Football.
- 23:07Trench are going down Rock star O and 1.
- 23:12You know, I'm hoping to whoop you.
- 23:14Listen, I turned 50 in November. I'm going to let you guys know
- 23:18that the 1st 3/4 of that game last night might have been the
- 23:21worst quarterback play I have ever seen ever.
- 23:27If McCarthy didn't have JJ, Justin Jefferson to throw to,
- 23:32you'd still be looking. You'd be looking.
- 23:35At that, he caught the two point conversion.
- 23:36Oh, that's right, he did. Yep, that was it.
- 23:38Yep, Yep. Am I wrong?
- 23:41Kenny I mean, no, it was bad. It was bad.
- 23:44It was it was bad. Aaron Jones led the team with
- 23:47receiving, I think because he had that one long win.
- 23:50Against the Yeah. But yeah, you know, it was bad.
- 23:53So what? But when the game was over, what
- 23:55did you come away with? Thinking about JJ.
- 23:57Jack, are you there? I guess he's not.
- 24:02I guess he's gone. Thanks for the call, Jack.
- 24:03Appreciate it. I, I think that look, I don't
- 24:05disagree with what he was not terrible.
- 24:07It was terrible early. I mean this, this is a guy that
- 24:09saw Tommy Kramer and Wade Wilson and a lot of in between.
- 24:13Those guys fit into in between, don't they?
- 24:15Very much. They really do.
- 24:17And it was awful. Who was flat out suck for the
- 24:21ponder? Oh yeah, Ponder would be in the
- 24:24conversation as when the flat out stinks.
- 24:28Who else did they have that was just God awful?
- 24:32Well, they've had the the couple of guys recently that came in
- 24:35there, Josh Dobbs. The rocket scientist.
- 24:39Nick Mullins. Yeah.
- 24:41Can I interest you in a little Tavarius Jackson?
- 24:45My wife still has a Tavarius Jackson.
- 24:46Wasn't. He a high draft pick.
- 24:48Higher than round maybe. Yeah, second, third, something
- 24:51like that. And did he find?
- 24:52Did he wind up in Seattle? Maybe he.
- 24:53Did yeah, Yeah. Started some games there.
- 24:56Gus Farrott started a couple of games.
- 24:57How about a little Todd Bowman for you?
- 24:59The sun's at South Dakota. His son.
- 25:00This is a South Dakota. Oh, Sean.
- 25:03Salisbury. See, I like Sean Salisbury.
- 25:06You do? No, I'll tell you why I like
- 25:08Sean Salisbury. You're the one.
- 25:09Well, it's not good stuff for that.
- 25:11It's now, you know, I'm not going to tell you because it
- 25:13means it's neither here. OK, I've gone too far, but
- 25:17you're really going to be disappointed by what I'm going
- 25:18to tell you. I like him because Winnipeg went
- 25:21through like a 25 year period without winning a Grey Cup.
- 25:24He finally. Won a Grey Cup?
- 25:26Oh really? OK.
- 25:27So that's why, and I was still home.
- 25:29I was still in Canada. So that's fine, right?
- 25:31Yes. That Spurgeon Win started Birch
- 25:35and win started two games in 2001.
- 25:38So Jack just said that's as bad as he seen.
- 25:40And I just named, I don't know, a half dozen quarterbacks on the
- 25:43surface were pretty bad in their own right.
- 25:46And that's how bad it was for 3/4 last year.
- 25:48It was terrible. Now we had this conversation
- 25:50last year and when you look at this Vikings team and what they
- 25:53have set up, not just with KOC, who's tremendous, his record of
- 25:571 score games year one was I dynamite set back in year 2.
- 26:01Last year was great again and got another one.
- 26:03Want to know this year. But you couple it with who you
- 26:06talked about Flores, of course he's not getting another job.
- 26:09I don't. Think he is Trent.
- 26:10I don't think he, I don't think he will.
- 26:11And that's why I said a year ago, this organization is set up
- 26:15for the future, maybe as well as anybody.
- 26:17Did he interview this last job cycle?
- 26:19I don't remember. If he did, he didn't have a ton.
- 26:22And I'm with you, I don't think he's going to get.
- 26:23It's going to be a while. Yes, Yep, yes, set up in a way
- 26:29where you got your play caller and head coach who seems to get
- 26:31it. Yes.
- 26:33Beloved easy guy nose offense? Check.
- 26:38Great stadium, great. Stadium fan base that's going to
- 26:42support you. Radio.
- 26:43Play by play guy. Not that that matters, but we're
- 26:45big PA fans. And then you go to the other
- 26:48side and you look, these last two years with Flores there,
- 26:51they haven't had a ton of pieces they've had to adjust on the fly
- 26:57and he's made chicken salad on. The chicken, Oh my God, more
- 26:59often than not. And now he's got some dudes, Yes
- 27:02he does. He's got his kind of yes, he
- 27:03does on the outside. Grenard's been was unbelievable.
- 27:07The middle of that defense against a beer.
- 27:10Who's the guy that I'd never heard of last night?
- 27:12They. Oh yeah, they came and made the
- 27:13play. The young guy they were, they
- 27:14were raving about, he came and made a play.
- 27:17They're they're deep, they're talented and they have a guy
- 27:20that will get it. And he certainly does.
- 27:23Yep, I agree. They are so.
- 27:25Kicker hit from what, 58 or 5959?
- 27:28Reichardt, I sold your field. That's got that's not easy.
- 27:32That's Kyra Santos. Right.
- 27:35That's not easy. No, not at all.
- 27:37This organization is set up incredibly well.
- 27:39And if JJ McCarthy isn't great? But if he's OK, if he's better
- 27:45than league average, he is consistently the 12th through
- 27:4916th best quarterback in the league.
- 27:51If he does that, you're in really good shape.
- 27:54And then if you sneak into the into the top 10 some, I'm not
- 27:57saying top five because that those spots are taken.
- 28:00I mean, think about the quarterbacks in this league to
- 28:02try to be, if you're going to just name five of them, think of
- 28:04a couple of dudes you're going to have to leave out of any
- 28:07conversation. But yeah, you're right.
- 28:09If he's 12 to 1516 with the rest of this roster, with a defensive
- 28:13coordinator, with the offensive minded head coach, you're going
- 28:16to you're going to do some damage in the playoffs.
- 28:18And they did it last night with no pair of saw.
- 28:20Nope, they did it last. Night.
- 28:23Yes, with no Harrison Smith. It was still made.
- 28:26Skulty or skulky or something that came in?
- 28:28He had some issues, but Darasaw's going to be back and
- 28:32now you kind of look big picture.
- 28:34The running game really didn't get going, but it's going to be
- 28:36there with those two running backs.
- 28:38Mason's legit. And with Darasaw back then in
- 28:40the run game, you feel really good about it.
- 28:44This division's going to be good, is it?
- 28:46I think so. At the top or one through 4.
- 28:49I think it's going to be solid throughout.
- 28:50Look, my bears are my bears. No, look, I'm not.
- 28:53I'm not killing you bears, you know I'm killing.
- 28:54I'm killing lions. Yeah.
- 28:57Is it fair to kill them though? I mean, isn't there too much
- 28:59talent? What's killing them that they
- 29:01fall back to 9 and eight, 8-9, something like that?
- 29:04Well, yeah, that I should have used a different word.
- 29:06Yeah, they're, they're going to be, they're going to be a good
- 29:08team. And that's where I'm going.
- 29:10But they're not. Going to be the what?
- 29:11What were they last year? 15 and two, yeah, they're not.
- 29:1415 and two, they're 9:00 and 8:00.
- 29:15Maybe that's still a good team that's.
- 29:17Still a good team, you know, if they hang around, maybe in
- 29:19contention for a for a wild card.
- 29:21They got too much talent there, but the Packers blew them away.
- 29:24Right. The Packers were unbelievable
- 29:28and I went into this year thinking, I mean, I wish I had
- 29:30Green. All the Detroit tickets I had, I
- 29:33wish they said Green Bay. Jordan Love didn't have to do
- 29:36much either. He didn't.
- 29:39Got a defence. They've got a defence.
- 29:41Got a running game, you know I like Jacobs coming into this
- 29:43year, you know it's going to be a good division.
- 29:46I agree. The Bears now 3 and 17 in their
- 29:49last 20 divisional games. What worries me about Caleb
- 29:52Williams and where I think I might be wrong on on my opinion
- 29:56on him. And again, they were really good
- 29:58through the scripted plays, his accuracy down the field, Trent,
- 30:04I mean, that's that's alarming. He's.
- 30:05Sloppy. He's just what?
- 30:08You just can't miss those dudes at that level.
- 30:10He's sloppy with his footwork, he's sloppy with all the things
- 30:13that you need to do. And it's the same things that we
- 30:15heard all offseason and the Cappy came in here.
- 30:17Oh, it's just people blowing smoke in it.
- 30:20There's nothing to it. It looks like there's something.
- 30:23To it, I mean, go back to Twitter from like 7:30 to 8:30
- 30:26last night and and everybody, you know, building up Caleb
- 30:31Williams, like next stop Canton. Meanwhile, JJ McCarthy is going
- 30:36to be in Canada, his next stop and the change around and I'm, I
- 30:39don't know, I'm anxious to see what JJ McCarthy does this week
- 30:43against Atlanta, who's got a pretty good defense, you know,
- 30:46does he build on that fourth quarter?
- 30:48Is there steps if he wins? He did, he wins.
- 30:53Got to give him credit for that. Elliot Clough next will catch up
- 30:57with him. He's met with some of the
- 30:59Hawkeye players that were made available and prior to Kirk
- 31:02Ference will get his take on Massachusetts.
- 31:05Just when we thought Albany might be the worst team to ever
- 31:08play Kinnick, there might be a new leader in the clubhouse
- 31:10after this week. Miller and Condon and Iowa
- 31:12Sports Radio Network. I'm Mary Condon, welcome back
- 31:22about 12 fourty 5 or so. Trent and I take you until 2O
- 31:27clock kicking off our number two.
- 31:29We will talk baseball with Matt tonight and right now we're
- 31:31going to talk Hawks. Elliot Kluss been busy this
- 31:34morning as he's been listening some of the players they've met
- 31:37with the media, at least a handful of them.
- 31:39Kirk Ference coming up in about an hour from right now.
- 31:42So Elliot, then folks at Hawkeye Insider will have that one
- 31:44covered for you. Elliot Trenton, Ken, thank you
- 31:46for coming on. Good to speak with you as
- 31:49always. We appreciate you doing this for
- 31:50us on a Tuesday. Who did you meet today?
- 31:53And maybe a take away or two from from what you heard
- 31:57earlier, Are they over the the game on Saturday and looking
- 32:01ahead or is there still some lingering after effects?
- 32:04Yeah, I talked with quite a few guys today, Ken Kaden, Wegen,
- 32:07Ethan Herket, DJ Hall Group. You know, I think they reflect
- 32:13Kirk Ference pretty, pretty well.
- 32:15Kirk is has kind of been known as a coach that can galvanized
- 32:19the guys after a loss and and not let a season spiral.
- 32:22And I mean, you just get that feel from the guys, right?
- 32:24Like they they talked about the Iowa State game.
- 32:26Of course, they talked about their mistakes.
- 32:28They talked about how they can improve going forward.
- 32:30But really, I mean, what we hear a lot from these guys after a
- 32:34bad play or, or, or after a tough loss is flush it.
- 32:38And that's pretty much the the thought from the guys right now
- 32:41is, is flush it and move on. Talk with Kaden Wegen about, you
- 32:45know, some of his returns and then flipping on that pic and,
- 32:48and Mark talked about how he can go through his reads a little
- 32:52bit quicker and, and he felt like he played a lot better this
- 32:55this weekend, stayed a little bit more calm, ready to go.
- 32:58But yeah, not, not a ton to take away, especially going into to a
- 33:02game like UMass, there's just not a whole lot to talk about
- 33:05when it comes to the Minutemen. Not, not a stellar program that
- 33:09they're playing this weekend. So yeah, it's, it's, it's tough
- 33:14right now in just a few days separated from that loss.
- 33:16But they do, they do have that 24 hour rule and, and they stick
- 33:19to it. They they flush it and move on.
- 33:21There was a lot of talk and some of the things that I see that
- 33:24you've compiled over a Hawkeye insider about the slow mesh
- 33:27talking with Gronowski. I think also Ortworth talked a
- 33:30little bit about it, the slow mesh we saw for a couple of
- 33:32plays, it was intriguing. At the very least, take us a
- 33:35little bit deeper in is this going to be a a building block
- 33:40and and a pretty major 10 of what Iowa does going forward.
- 33:43That's a good question. Of course, you know, they don't
- 33:46want to give us everything regarding their their plan or
- 33:48their game plans going forward. But yeah, it it sounds like it's
- 33:52something that they want to do and added wrinkle for the
- 33:54offense and to keep opposing defenses guessing a little bit.
- 33:59It's it's definitely fun for us, right.
- 34:01Like we don't usually get to see new wrinkles in an Iowa offense.
- 34:05But yeah, one thing that Mark said is, is keeping the date
- 34:07defense guessing, forcing them to, you know, commit to a run or
- 34:11a pass before the plays even really started.
- 34:14Yeah, I I think it's something that that really interested the
- 34:17staff when when they were looking at bringing on Warren
- 34:20Ruggiero. And to see it already in Week 2
- 34:22is it was kind of surprising. But and actually one thing that
- 34:26Mark said is I think it was the run that that he took off
- 34:29himself. They kind of lucked out.
- 34:30I would state defense kind of lucked out with the coverage
- 34:33they ran because they were expecting to have a big play
- 34:35over the top. But the coverage that Iowa State
- 34:38ran didn't didn't quite allow him to do it.
- 34:40So that was kind of an interesting note to take away.
- 34:42So not just the the big play action that that they missed on
- 34:46or sorry, the the pass interference that was called
- 34:49with with Seth Anderson on on the deep shot.
- 34:52They were looking to do it again at another point just didn't
- 34:54work out. So kind of an interesting note
- 34:57from today. But yeah, I would not surprise
- 34:59me if they at least continue to riot.
- 35:01Run it a couple times, probably. Again, probably not this
- 35:03weekend. Again, UMass, where they're not
- 35:05going to want to be showing a lot.
- 35:06But it would not surprise me if they run it, you know, against
- 35:09Rutgers down the road or or Oregon or what have you, just to
- 35:13keep a defense guessing. The running back position, I was
- 35:16surprised that surprised, but maybe not the Terrell Washington
- 35:19still listed as the starter. There is an OR down there
- 35:22between Williams and Patterson. Boy, it sure seemed to me like
- 35:25Patterson might be the guy, at least till some of The Walking
- 35:29wounded get back. Patterson I thought was one of
- 35:32the more productive Hawks this past weekend.
- 35:33Are you surprised to see him where he is on the depth chart
- 35:36at this point? Honestly, this is not Ken.
- 35:39I think this is one of those situations where when Kirk says
- 35:43don't really pay, he doesn't really pay attention to the
- 35:45depth chart. This is exactly what this is
- 35:47exactly what he's talking about. Like like Jazz is just going to
- 35:50have to get more carries going forward.
- 35:52I think I think there is some strategy to this as well.
- 35:55Personally, I think Xavier Williams should be RB 1.
- 35:58I don't think he touched the ball enough this weekend.
- 36:01And, you know, maybe that's that's in part to a few
- 36:03different things that, you know, the way the Iowa State defense
- 36:06was running or who knows, maybe he cramped or something.
- 36:09But I thought that he should have gotten more carious this
- 36:12weekend. As far as Jazz, to tell you the
- 36:15truth, Ken, I think what they're doing right now is that they're
- 36:18allowing. They're allowing.
- 36:20Maybe you're willing to get those initial carries.
- 36:23And then Jazz is just the perfect compliment once the
- 36:25defense starts to, you know, start coughing and puffing a
- 36:27little bit and then you get punched in the mouth by a guy
- 36:30who runs just one speed. There is, there is no, there's
- 36:34no hesitancy for the way he runs the ball.
- 36:36It is straightforward 100. Percent gas, all gas, no brakes.
- 36:39And and to do that, you know, put the defense on their back
- 36:42heels a little bit, I think. And it was the program, if you
- 36:48will, Otherwise you might get knocked out.
- 36:50So I I to me, that's that's the way it looks for the first two
- 36:54games. Of course, I could change going
- 36:56forward, but that's the way it looks at me and it's urgent.
- 36:58I mean, Jazz is playing the best ball that that he played that
- 37:01Iowa. Hey, it sounds like Elliot,
- 37:03you're a little bit faint on the line here.
- 37:05Not sure exactly what happened on that.
- 37:07See if we can get you back on here.
- 37:09I don't know. Take a step to your right.
- 37:10Yeah, something inside the bowels of the Hawkeye complex,
- 37:14or maybe something happened there.
- 37:15You got us back, Elliot. Yes, I do.
- 37:17All right. How much of that did you catch?
- 37:19Perfect, perfect guys. Hey, one final thing for me.
- 37:22I let Ken wrap up with you. And on the defensive side of the
- 37:24football, there were certainly a lot of good moments early in the
- 37:27game. Holding them to 2 field goals
- 37:29feels like that. They're pretty solid.
- 37:31There is one thing that came out of today, the players talking
- 37:35about forcing turnovers. Now you want to play clean, you
- 37:37don't want to get beat over the top.
- 37:39It's difficult to do that. What do you expect to see in
- 37:42order for them to generate that kind of pressure in and to be a
- 37:45little bit more ball Hocking to force some turnovers?
- 37:49Yeah, You know, that's that's a tough call because just the way
- 37:54that I will run their defense is so much predicated on generating
- 37:59pressure and making the quarterback uncomfortable in
- 38:01order to force those turnovers. But it doesn't always result in
- 38:05its sacks. It doesn't always result in
- 38:07pressures. It doesn't always result in QB
- 38:09hits, if you will. I don't know.
- 38:11I think it might have a little bit to do with just the fact
- 38:14that, you know, we're early on in the season.
- 38:16Balls haven't been tipped the way that, you know, maybe you
- 38:18would like. I, I think TJ Hall, if there's
- 38:21anybody that I had to pick to, to end up getting, you know, one
- 38:25of those first picks of the season of those first turnovers,
- 38:28it would be him just because of the way that he's played so far
- 38:31this season. We heard a little bit about him
- 38:33taking his game to the next level this offseason.
- 38:36And, and it really looks to me like he has like, of course,
- 38:39Iowa State had a few drops this weekend, but man, I mean, he's
- 38:43just playing at such a high level, especially relative to
- 38:46what we've seen from him before. I, you know, honestly, I just
- 38:49think it's time. I think it's it's getting a
- 38:51little lucky with a, with a tip ball here and there and we'll
- 38:55see. You know, I think it'll depend
- 38:58on who they play. It would honestly like it'll,
- 39:02it'll shock me if they leave this UMass game without a
- 39:04turnover, at least one. Like they're just too many
- 39:06things that just didn't go their way this last week.
- 39:09That punch ball out by Jayden Harrell that that got recovered
- 39:12by Iowa State, the tip ball that was caught by Gabe Burkle.
- 39:15Like they're, they're going to get one of these these these
- 39:18things to go their way eventually.
- 39:20And I think if there's an opportunity for it to happen,
- 39:23it's against the Minutemen this weekend.
- 39:24Yeah, sure. Similarly would be.
- 39:26I'm with you. I thought TJ Hall played well.
- 39:27Another guy. We didn't talk about yesterday's
- 39:29Jonah Pace, so I thought he had a decent game as well.
- 39:32Listen, we're up against the clock.
- 39:33Ellie. Appreciate you doing this for
- 39:35us. We'll grab you next Tuesday if
- 39:37your schedule allows. Hopefully, for our sake, it
- 39:39does. Thank you, buddy.
- 39:40Appreciate you coming on. Sounds good.
- 39:42Thanks. Guys, good to talk to you LA

- 40:01Yeah, bring the team with them. UMass should be a laugher.
- 40:08Well, it should be all right. If you want to go to the game,
- 40:10you have to pick up the tickets. So they can't.
- 40:13You can't win them and then send Uncle Bill to get them because
- 40:16Uncle Bill, the tickets are going to be in your name.
