- 1:00Speaker 3: I has to you know, sometimes you just have to
- 1:02Speaker 3: find a way to add value. And what you said
- 1:04Speaker 3: about the toys key too, because a lot of people
- 1:06Speaker 3: want to travel.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Just being an extra like homie and not not like
- 1:09Speaker 2: you know, extra. Everybody has to you know, it has
- 1:15Speaker 2: to make sense, you know. And it's dope to want
- 1:16Speaker 2: to bring everybody and bring your people, but everybody should
- 1:20Speaker 2: have a purpose. You'll make sure everybody's doing it. No
- 1:22Speaker 2: matter what they're doing. They could be this, they could
- 1:24Speaker 2: be the barber, they could be but as long as
- 1:25Speaker 2: they're adding value so that they're not just bodies, they're
- 1:29Speaker 2: just taking up, you know, spacing.
- 1:32Speaker 3: My graduates from my school being forced bad drop drop
- 1:39Speaker 3: drop drop drop. All right, let's do it, all right, guys,
- 1:56Speaker 3: welcome back e y l we back state side. Yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 3: shout out to the you Cage, Shout out to France,
- 2:01Speaker 3: shout out to Europe. All the love that we got
- 2:02Speaker 3: over there. Man, that was a legendary run.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Shout of Germany. Germany for sure.
- 2:06Speaker 3: But now we're back state side and back doing what
- 2:09Speaker 3: we like to do as far as cover culture. If
- 2:12Speaker 3: you know Eyo, if you're Eyo history, you know, the
- 2:15Speaker 3: first tagline was the Backstories.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Of Sports and Entertainment.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Okay, so that was the actual first The first hind
- 2:23Speaker 3: of concept was to talk about finance, but talk about
- 2:26Speaker 3: like from a sports entertainments perspective. So they're like fifty
- 2:28Speaker 3: cent vitamin Waterdale, Soldier Boy, Dibsess Supreme of course, jay
- 2:34Speaker 3: Z of course, and all the different things that he's done.
- 2:36Speaker 3: So that was always the core, and then we kind
- 2:38Speaker 3: of just grew into business financial literacy. We started talking
- 2:42Speaker 3: about stocks, crypto and all that stuff, but we always
- 2:45Speaker 3: stayed true to our core of culture, music, entertaining sports.
- 2:51Speaker 2: That's kind of the stuff that we grew up with. Yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 2: so this is a dope.
- 2:55Speaker 3: This is a dope. I always liked these conversations. I
- 2:57Speaker 3: always say some of our favorite interviews Chris.
- 2:59Speaker 2: God, Yes, Dame Dash absolutely, who else fits in that moment? Joe,
- 3:05Speaker 2: but the storyteller behind the scenes.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Oh yeah, the guys that they got their stories.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah, but Joe still done too, because even though he's
- 3:15Speaker 2: an artist and he's in front, he's still it's kind
- 3:17Speaker 2: of like in the backside because he's like he's a
- 3:19Speaker 2: real fan and real historian of the culture. So the
- 3:22Speaker 2: way he tells them stories from many perspectives.
- 3:26Speaker 5: And Time Spot as a label that also good stories.
- 3:31Speaker 3: So today we got Lenny Santiago known as Lenny yespos threat, Jesus,
- 3:40Speaker 3: your boy.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I'm here to learn about financial literacy is still class.
- 3:45Speaker 2: You can call it the podcast, but this is just
- 3:47Speaker 2: my class for financial literacy.
- 3:50Speaker 4: So nothing happens before it's time. We got to start there.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Because we met before, you probably won't remember this. I'm thinking,
- 3:56Speaker 4: so this is crazy. We were at the going to
- 3:59Speaker 4: the Poto show in Brooklyn, this is like two thousand
- 4:02Speaker 4: and probably nineteen, and I tapped shot. I'm like, yo,
- 4:06Speaker 4: letting ask because we had wrote down people we're going
- 4:08Speaker 4: to sit down with.
- 4:09Speaker 2: He's like yo.
- 4:10Speaker 5: I'll at him like saying, I think you was with
- 4:13Speaker 5: your man.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I think yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 4: It was the one in Brooklyn at the Yeah, and
- 4:17Speaker 4: I walked up. I'm like, yo, tell you what we do.
- 4:19Speaker 4: We got this podcast. At the time, we were calling
- 4:21Speaker 4: that's bigger than that now, but I'm like, we got
- 4:23Speaker 4: this podcast. We're talking about behind the scenes of sports entertainment.
- 4:26Speaker 5: I love to have you on. You're kind of like
- 4:27Speaker 5: yeah yeah.
- 4:28Speaker 4: I'm like, yeah, we just did dj Evy because at
- 4:29Speaker 4: the time we had literally just did and we were
- 4:32Speaker 4: talking about the Empire Strikes Back mixtape and I was like, yo,
- 4:35Speaker 4: I need that third I noticed that he said, and
- 4:38Speaker 4: he said that he has that there's another Segle verse
- 4:40Speaker 4: third verse. Oh wow, Yeah, so you know where we
- 4:42Speaker 4: were going with shot the Kiss and he was he
- 4:46Speaker 4: was like yeah, yeah, he was like, yeah, just keep going, guys,
- 4:48Speaker 4: keep going. I'm like I went back to him, he
- 4:50Speaker 4: was like, how to go. I'm like, nothing happens.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I said nothing before time.
- 4:58Speaker 5: So this is like a full circle with me.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It's just it's really just being consistent because you gotta think,
- 5:03Speaker 2: you know, I have got want to be honest to
- 5:07Speaker 2: say dozens. But it's a lot respect I mean through
- 5:10Speaker 2: social media, through in person. If I go somewhere, like
- 5:14Speaker 2: there's a lot of just people like that kind of stuff,
- 5:16Speaker 2: Like I got there, so I got an artist, so
- 5:17Speaker 2: I gotta and it's like I want to address it
- 5:19Speaker 2: all and I really do meeting. I'm like, yo, yeah,
- 5:21Speaker 2: let's I don't have that.
- 5:24Speaker 5: We're gonna We're gonna get it. We're gonna make it happen.
- 5:26Speaker 3: One of the best things I heard was Diddy said
- 5:27Speaker 3: this on Instagram a while ago. He was like, I'm
- 5:29Speaker 3: looking at connect with Black creatives, black film director.
- 5:33Speaker 2: He was like a whole list of connect with. He
- 5:35Speaker 2: was like, find me people in the comics.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Like but I understood what he was saying, Like it's
- 5:43Speaker 3: like get to the point that where you're hot enough
- 5:46Speaker 3: where you're gonna get referred, and now it makes sense.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Soon or later, you can't deny me.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's what happened, and started coming around a
- 5:53Speaker 2: little by little, you know what I'm saying, even dated
- 5:56Speaker 2: an account. She was like, you're saying that, you're.
- 6:03Speaker 5: It.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Really I love when things come at me. And then
- 6:06Speaker 2: guys on the call. Ye, it was like, these are
- 6:09Speaker 2: my guys, and I was like, now I've been seeing
- 6:11Speaker 2: I've been watching it really dope to whatever they need,
- 6:13Speaker 2: Like whatever you whatever you need shout in the call.
- 6:17Speaker 2: She she put this together.
- 6:18Speaker 3: So Lennys legend in the entertainment game. You don't like
- 6:22Speaker 3: the word legend.
- 6:23Speaker 2: I'm not a legend, but I'm trying to do my thing.
- 6:27Speaker 3: So, yeah, this is going to be an interesting conversation.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Started at Street Team, I.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Believe right, started at the street team level doing treat
- 6:35Speaker 2: promotions and worked.
- 6:36Speaker 3: His way up to the music executive manager. Short he
- 6:40Speaker 3: manages DJ call. If you didn't know, it's.
- 6:43Speaker 2: The biggest part of the you know, the biggest was
- 6:50Speaker 2: part of.
- 6:50Speaker 3: The two biggest gens and hip hop history, easily bad
- 6:54Speaker 3: Boy at the height of it, bad Boy and then rocking.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It's like going from the Boston Celtics to the lay
- 7:07Speaker 3: Boston Celtics to the Lakers in the eighties and then
- 7:09Speaker 3: in the you know, two thousands. So this is going
- 7:12Speaker 3: to be a legendary situation. Lennys, I'm sure you probably
- 7:14Speaker 3: heard his name all throughout it. He might be one
- 7:16Speaker 3: of the most mentioned people in Jay Z's raps. He
- 7:19Speaker 3: doesn't really mention a lot of people. He mentioned him
- 7:21Speaker 3: name a lot.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I'm grateful.
- 7:25Speaker 3: So so, yeah, man, this is gonna be a dope conversation.
- 7:27Speaker 3: So first and foremost, thank you for coming. Don't think
- 7:29Speaker 3: for having me. So let's talk about it. Let's talk
- 7:31Speaker 3: about the journey. A lot of people are familiar with
- 7:33Speaker 3: you now they heard your story, but your career is
- 7:36Speaker 3: over probably twenty five.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Thirty years, yeah, twenty two decades. How did it start?
- 7:41Speaker 3: I know it started on on street promotion, which now
- 7:44Speaker 3: there is no such thing.
- 7:45Speaker 5: People are like, what is social social media?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Street?
- 7:47Speaker 5: That is it?
- 7:48Speaker 2: Right? Like, you know, what's funny though? I saw was
- 7:50Speaker 2: it All Star Weekend? I saw like quality control posters, which.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Is pretty dump.
- 7:56Speaker 2: You know I'm saying something, but you know, those are
- 7:58Speaker 2: guys coaching p they understand what that is. So it
- 8:01Speaker 2: was dope to see that, like, oh shit, it comes
- 8:03Speaker 2: like it was all over like by the hotels and everything.
- 8:05Speaker 2: So but yeah, I mean it doesn't really exist a
- 8:08Speaker 2: lot in uh lost art, but I mean, you know,
- 8:11Speaker 2: it served its purpose. At the time. There was no
- 8:13Speaker 2: social media, there was no like outlets really kind of
- 8:17Speaker 2: like yeah, you know what I'm saying. So that's what
- 8:19Speaker 2: it was. It was really putting in the footwork the
- 8:21Speaker 2: groundwhere going literally hand to hand, going outside of concerts, parties,
- 8:26Speaker 2: you know, seminars, car shows, anything where you thought, you know,
- 8:31Speaker 2: our audience was if there was a hip hop movie
- 8:35Speaker 2: opening up, you know, like Friday said anything like that.
- 8:37Speaker 2: You know, Okay, that's our audience. That's what we're gonna
- 8:39Speaker 2: go promote. And that's how we had to get the
- 8:41Speaker 2: word out.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Stickers streets. At one point you had the flat way
- 8:44Speaker 5: with a.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Flat some of the best I think roughriders might have
- 8:48Speaker 3: had the best that I've ever seen with the motorcycle bikes.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And they like because they had.
- 8:56Speaker 3: It was it was just you know, it's an interesting
- 8:58Speaker 3: business case study because it's a it's a former marketing
- 9:01Speaker 3: that is no longer around, but there's still there's still
- 9:04Speaker 3: things that you can actually implement from that era now
- 9:08Speaker 3: as far as like the Bliss promotion and the merch
- 9:12Speaker 3: and all of that stuff is still kind of relevant now,
- 9:15Speaker 3: it's just in a different form. So like when you
- 9:17Speaker 3: started working that was with bad Boy.
- 9:19Speaker 2: That was actually a little bit before then. So I
- 9:22Speaker 2: have some friends of mine who I was fortunate to
- 9:24Speaker 2: have that were in the business, so I got a
- 9:27Speaker 2: little like not to say, a cheap way of a
- 9:29Speaker 2: little head start in but again nothing official. So that
- 9:32Speaker 2: was like Showbiz and ag the Legion and Black Sheep.
- 9:36Speaker 2: You know. So Dress lived in the Bronx for a while,
- 9:38Speaker 2: so and you know, the Legion with my guys, so
- 9:41Speaker 2: I got to go out with them. And if Dress,
- 9:42Speaker 2: you know, Dress had shows, what we call it was out.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Trucee's Yours was our the biggest, was the biggest record.
- 9:48Speaker 2: So imagine, you know, I wanted to be the music business,
- 9:51Speaker 2: already dying to be in it. And like, I got
- 9:52Speaker 2: some friends in the neighborhood who actually have a hit record.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So I'm in the music business. Not as an artist though,
- 9:58Speaker 2: oh no, no, no, no, I mean I'm I wanted to
- 10:00Speaker 2: be an artist very early on. But I came to
- 10:05Speaker 2: my senses and I was just like, you know what,
- 10:07Speaker 2: you know what's funny. I gave myself like a sort
- 10:11Speaker 2: of like an option of like if I make it
- 10:14Speaker 2: in the meaning like if I get an internship or
- 10:16Speaker 2: a job, I'm not going to be an artist, but
- 10:19Speaker 2: I'll try to be an artist up until that happens,
- 10:21Speaker 2: and whichever one comes first. And I had a partner,
- 10:24Speaker 2: God bless him past recently, but I had a hip
- 10:27Speaker 2: rap partner, and I told him the same. I was like, yo,
- 10:29Speaker 2: whichever come first. So when I got the internship at
- 10:32Speaker 2: Bad Boy, I was like, I'm I didn't want to
- 10:34Speaker 2: be the guy in the office doing that. And then
- 10:38Speaker 2: also like yo, a rap too. You know what I'm saying.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Year was a bad internship ninety five? Yeah, because I
- 10:45Speaker 2: was only that year. And I don't take any credit
- 10:47Speaker 2: at all for like you know, Rock, I've been there
- 10:49Speaker 2: from day one. I'm a part of the team, you
- 10:52Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. But Bad Boy I came in
- 10:54Speaker 2: when they were already on fire. My brother super Mario
- 10:56Speaker 2: put me on and it was an amazing year. A
- 10:59Speaker 2: year and a half of the was it was short
- 11:00Speaker 2: lived and then Rockefeller started ninety six yep, and I
- 11:04Speaker 2: was already a big J fan. I already you know,
- 11:07Speaker 2: seen him out in about My friend Ray Ray was
- 11:10Speaker 2: working with them doing radio promotions. So that was gonna
- 11:12Speaker 2: be my end. So I immediately went to rock. I
- 11:14Speaker 2: wanted to be somewhere where obviously I believed in, but
- 11:17Speaker 2: also that was starting from scratch because I wanted to
- 11:20Speaker 2: be a part of what bad Boy built. And when
- 11:22Speaker 2: I was there, I didn't feel like that because they
- 11:23Speaker 2: were you know, they was already they did their thing. Yeah,
- 11:26Speaker 2: they did the thing for years. I came into a
- 11:28Speaker 2: great team, but I didn't help build that, you know
- 11:31Speaker 2: what I'm saying. And I wanted to go somewhere to
- 11:32Speaker 2: be a part of something from the beginning. Yeah. Rockefeller
- 11:35Speaker 2: at the time, he's working on reason, he's working on it.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah wow yet Yeah, so how did you enter into
- 11:41Speaker 2: that rock? You didn't know J. I knew Jay by face,
- 11:45Speaker 2: so I knew Jan and Dane member. I was everywhere.
- 11:47Speaker 2: My whole goal from high school, go anywhere that there
- 11:51Speaker 2: is music stuff going on. If I heard about a video,
- 11:54Speaker 2: I went to the video. If I heard about a seminar,
- 11:56Speaker 2: uh in store. I don't care if Nas Leo was
- 11:59Speaker 2: signed autographs at whatever I went anything music because I
- 12:03Speaker 2: figured whatever music related was going on, it was gonna
- 12:06Speaker 2: be music related people or artists or they're I read credits,
- 12:09Speaker 2: so I knew every person, Oh, Nas is gonna be
- 12:12Speaker 2: I know Jungle, I know I don't know them, but
- 12:14Speaker 2: I know we're trying to established relationship. That's that's very important.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And it was crazy. I said this in London to
- 12:21Speaker 2: I was talking to somebody. I said, the two.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Biggest keys in business is to stay close and to
- 12:25Speaker 3: add value. And that seems like it's easy, but so
- 12:29Speaker 3: many people cannot do that. And it's like what you're
- 12:32Speaker 3: talking about, so many people fail that part of it
- 12:34Speaker 3: where it's like just be in the right place.
- 12:36Speaker 4: Yeah, how many times have we said that? Like even
- 12:39Speaker 4: every time we get on stage, I say the same thing.
- 12:40Speaker 4: It's not about being in the right place at the
- 12:42Speaker 4: right time. It's being in the right place all the time.
- 12:44Speaker 4: And you're literally studying the people, like you know all
- 12:47Speaker 4: the people. It feels like our story in a sense.
- 12:49Speaker 4: It was like I remember reading credits and I know
- 12:51Speaker 4: every producer and then I know everybody's on the team.
- 12:54Speaker 5: I'm like, this makes personal sense. I want to see
- 12:56Speaker 5: these people.
- 12:56Speaker 2: One day.
- 12:57Speaker 5: I'm gonna meet these people.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I studied that whole ship. I studied Jaye's whole crew.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I was saying with something to be highest cousin like Tata,
- 13:03Speaker 2: like and you know, you do it so familiar. They're like,
- 13:06Speaker 2: I know this, it gets done to me now, you
- 13:09Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. Like people were like, yole' bro,
- 13:11Speaker 2: you'd be good and I'm like good, Like, I'm like,
- 13:14Speaker 2: I don't know. If I know them, I'll tell you.
- 13:17Speaker 4: We ran Torre to Hop in l A. And I
- 13:21Speaker 4: was just like, yo, let's hop over there. We were walking.
- 13:23Speaker 4: They were like like, that's that's hip hop like legend.
- 13:26Speaker 5: That's right there. Like we got that's a legend.
- 13:28Speaker 4: And we actually had we sat down and had a
- 13:30Speaker 4: conversation with him and it was ironic that we could
- 13:32Speaker 4: have had beggs Bis is going to be on the
- 13:34Speaker 4: on the show that yeah, yeah, And we kind of
- 13:37Speaker 4: ran into each other at the same time. It was like, man,
- 13:40Speaker 4: you know all these people I looked.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Up to, this is incredible.
- 13:42Speaker 4: You do it all without breaking a sweat, like being

- 14:45Speaker 2: becomes that much easier, right because they're familiar with it,
- 14:47Speaker 2: or they heard about it, or their friend did the podcast,
- 14:50Speaker 2: or it's like oh.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, yeah, so all right, so you add all
- 14:55Speaker 3: of these different clubs, all these different events, everything, record signings.
- 14:59Speaker 2: And your face become familiar. Yeah, so what's what leads to.
- 15:03Speaker 3: You actually getting in the door and actually getting up
- 15:05Speaker 3: with That's what led to it, exactly what you said.
- 15:07Speaker 2: It was my face became super familiar. And the guy
- 15:11Speaker 2: super Mario, who was like a big heavy promo guy
- 15:15Speaker 2: back then, he's the one that was about to get
- 15:18Speaker 2: the job with Puff and that's when he was like yo.
- 15:21Speaker 2: He was like, yo, I see you everywhere who you
- 15:22Speaker 2: work with. And I was like, you know what to say?
- 15:24Speaker 2: I was like, I'm is out here because I didn't
- 15:27Speaker 2: really know what I'm saying. And I would get promoting
- 15:30Speaker 2: my guys Black Cheeping and the Legion. But remember that
- 15:33Speaker 2: I didn't work for the label or them. It was
- 15:35Speaker 2: just I just did something like I got to look
- 15:38Speaker 2: like I'm in this shit. So that's when he was like, yo,
- 15:41Speaker 2: you know work no way. I was like nah, he
- 15:43Speaker 2: was like bet. He was like if I get this
- 15:44Speaker 2: job a bad boy, you on like you're good, and
- 15:47Speaker 2: like two weeks later, man, he hit me three weeks
- 15:49Speaker 2: later and was like, yo, I got it, like you on.
- 15:52Speaker 2: So me I met working at this lighting company I'm
- 15:54Speaker 2: actually building lights, building electrician, Yeah, building lights, right, and
- 16:00Speaker 2: I ain't get in a music business. And I get
- 16:01Speaker 2: that call and I'm like, out, hell quick, my job
- 16:05Speaker 2: fucking like no, no, no. By the way, got to
- 16:08Speaker 2: the bad Boy and it was no pay. It was
- 16:10Speaker 2: like it was a street team, you know what I'm saying. So,
- 16:12Speaker 2: like what if I jumped out the window, but it
- 16:13Speaker 2: didn't matter, you know what I'm saying. I really it's
- 16:15Speaker 2: nothing more I wanted to do to just I used
- 16:17Speaker 2: to tell everybody. I used to have a lot of
- 16:19Speaker 2: friends that work in the business. It was this guy
- 16:21Speaker 2: named Lindsay who his family Sylvia as they owned Sylvia's Restaurant.
- 16:25Speaker 2: So I got to see those things early on, and
- 16:27Speaker 2: Lindsay worked for Death Jam. So Lindsey was bringing slick
- 16:29Speaker 2: Rick to the block eighty seven eighty eight. I mean,
- 16:32Speaker 2: I'm seeing this like this is what I wanted to do,
- 16:35Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So I used to tell
- 16:36Speaker 2: but I was ten, eleven, twelve thirteen, know what I'm saying.
- 16:39Speaker 2: I used to tell those guys like, yo, give me,
- 16:41Speaker 2: let me but you know, as a twelve thirteen year old,
- 16:43Speaker 2: they're looking at me like what like not here. Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 2: but that's how ambitious I was. And I just the
- 16:49Speaker 2: point is, I always told everybody I just need a shot,
- 16:52Speaker 2: Like if you just give me a free give me
- 16:53Speaker 2: a free shot, I'm going to prove because I really
- 16:55Speaker 2: didn't even know what you know. Post listening to You
- 16:59Speaker 2: Guys podcast with Ross, you know how Ross was talking
- 17:01Speaker 2: about how he went through the businesses and he didn't
- 17:03Speaker 2: even know about him. He just did it and learned
- 17:06Speaker 2: as he went. It was the same thing. I didn't
- 17:07Speaker 2: know what I wanted to do in music business. I
- 17:09Speaker 2: didn't know I didn't know what if there was a
- 17:10Speaker 2: retail person, a promotions person, radio person a, and R.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I didn't know any of those titles or so I
- 17:16Speaker 2: just was like, I'll figure it out as I get there.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I know that I'm hungry enough, I'm ambitious enough, and
- 17:20Speaker 2: I'm driven enough. And that said, if you tell me
- 17:23Speaker 2: this is what you gotta do. You got to call
- 17:25Speaker 2: every radio station on every retail store and make sure
- 17:28Speaker 2: that our product is there, then just give me the assignment.
- 17:31Speaker 2: That's what I did.
- 17:32Speaker 5: So you start Street Team.
- 17:34Speaker 4: You at the reasona with doubt, A reasona doubt, you know,
- 17:37Speaker 4: but how.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Did you get to Rockefeller. Rockefeller was through a friend
- 17:40Speaker 2: of mine named Ray Ray. Ray Ray was a promotion
- 17:42Speaker 2: guy as well, just like Super Mario was. And Ray
- 17:45Speaker 2: Ray used to work at like Penalty Records or something,
- 17:47Speaker 2: and he used to give me like little small bags.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I got to work with Norriy. That's how I met Norri.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Me and Nori became brothers. Way back, wild story, but anyway,
- 17:57Speaker 2: So Ray Ray left Penalty when Rockefeller starts garted and
- 18:00Speaker 2: went as the promotion guy. So office brand new nineteen
- 18:05Speaker 2: ninety five. It's only like Dame Bigg's Jay Ray Ray
- 18:09Speaker 2: and like maybe one of to Christy Clifford and like
- 18:12Speaker 2: maybe one other person. It was like Rockfeller record was
- 18:15Speaker 2: like six people, six people. So that was my end,
- 18:17Speaker 2: was like Ray Ray, So I went harassed him. He
- 18:20Speaker 2: already knew me, he knew how heart and he was like,
- 18:22Speaker 2: I got you. And then I got in a room.
- 18:24Speaker 2: He was like, you just got to talk to Dame
- 18:25Speaker 2: and Jay just so you know. And when I got
- 18:27Speaker 2: in the room, I got shitted onout that.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:32Speaker 2: When I got in the room, they immediately knew me
- 18:34Speaker 2: from the street and they knew me from the bad
- 18:37Speaker 2: Boy promotion. So they knew me as a bad Boy promoter,
- 18:40Speaker 2: and then they were both like nah, no, nah, he's
- 18:42Speaker 2: a bad boy, Like we don't want we want Rockefeller,
- 18:45Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. The team and I was
- 18:46Speaker 2: like no, no, no, not quit And it was like noah,
- 18:48Speaker 2: Nah were good. And I'm like, no, I actually left
- 18:51Speaker 2: bad Boy to come here. Nah, we're good. So they
- 18:56Speaker 2: didn't put me on cool. I told Ray Ray to
- 18:59Speaker 2: give me any product that he will receive and just
- 19:01Speaker 2: let me know everywhere j and Dame Biggs were gonna be.
- 19:04Speaker 2: So if he had a little club date, if he had,
- 19:05Speaker 2: I just got the schedule and I showed up everywhere.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Me and my man Burt showed up everywhere. Just you
- 19:10Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. When every time they come out,
- 19:11Speaker 2: they see it, they know he don't have no street
- 19:13Speaker 2: team and they don't have those staff, so it's like
- 19:15Speaker 2: who's putting this up? So I made sure they saw
- 19:17Speaker 2: every time until after a few months it was just like,
- 19:20Speaker 2: I but what made you? What made you leave bad
- 19:24Speaker 2: Boy at its peak?
- 19:25Speaker 3: Because bad boys on fire at that time, that boy's
- 19:28Speaker 3: on fuego and take a chance with up and coming
- 19:32Speaker 3: relatively like it's a risk at that point in time.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Big risk. But I thought, I honestly, I swear to God,
- 19:37Speaker 2: I'm gonna be honest. I didn't know Jay was gonna
- 19:39Speaker 2: be this big, But I knew j was gonna be
- 19:41Speaker 2: the biggest. It's just he was just too good. He
- 19:44Speaker 2: was too prolific, he was too profound, he was too
- 19:48Speaker 2: and I didn't know him personally at that time. I'm
- 19:50Speaker 2: just saying as a fan of the music, listening to
- 19:52Speaker 2: him on Big D he came listening to him on
- 19:54Speaker 2: and this is before the first album. This is before
- 19:56Speaker 2: the first album. This is in my lifetime. You can't
- 19:58Speaker 2: listen in my lifetime and watch the that video that
- 20:00Speaker 2: they funded and not think this guy is like.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Well, it's interesting because around that time, like I was young,
- 20:07Speaker 3: but I was heavily inter.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Rap at that time. And I remember when Jay first
- 20:11Speaker 2: came out.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Even after the album came out, people still wasn't really
- 20:15Speaker 3: fully respective.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Like I remember, like I was telling my cousin, I'm like, yo,
- 20:19Speaker 2: this kid jay Z, like he's dope, and he's like
- 20:21Speaker 2: jay Z he like who as.
- 20:23Speaker 3: I'm like no, Like as I'm like no, jay Z Brooklyn,
- 20:31Speaker 3: he got this song like he's dope, Like it's this
- 20:34Speaker 3: whole album. The whole album is dope. So I say
- 20:36Speaker 3: that to say, that's even before that. So for you
- 20:39Speaker 3: to say that you knew he was gonna be the biggest,
- 20:41Speaker 3: that's a lot because big was around.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Yeahan was around, Nas was around. Let's look at this
- 20:46Speaker 2: was killing. This is a small, small example, but like
- 20:50Speaker 2: even stuff like at the time everybody was wearing Asaci.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Everybody from Biggie to everybody talked about ASACEI Jay didn't
- 20:56Speaker 2: say Asaki. Jay said, the Medusa had turned me to stone,
- 20:59Speaker 2: like what describe VERSACEI like that where everybody else is
- 21:05Speaker 2: like the Rissachi I got the the Meduca turned stone
- 21:09Speaker 2: like he was just like he just had a different
- 21:11Speaker 2: perspective to me. And again I didn't. I wasn't with
- 21:15Speaker 2: them in the street. But listening to it, you felt,
- 21:17Speaker 2: you felt, how really was you know what I'm saying.
- 21:19Speaker 4: No, we forgot to mention at that time, we only
- 21:21Speaker 4: think in the East coast, but at that time got popped.
- 21:24Speaker 4: You got just dominating, completely dominating. But I want to
- 21:28Speaker 4: go back to something because it's pretty big and this
- 21:31Speaker 4: can relate to business. Is that value add even though
- 21:35Speaker 4: they told you no right, because most people won't do that.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Get turned down and say all right, let me go
- 21:39Speaker 4: find another opportunity. You got turned down and said, nah,
- 21:42Speaker 4: let me still add value, let me just help.
- 21:45Speaker 5: And it led to that. So like for free, for free,
- 21:48Speaker 5: people don't even like the.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Fact that determination, that that grit, Like where.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Where did it come from?
- 21:57Speaker 2: There's nothing else I wanted to do. I don't like
- 22:00Speaker 2: found redundant or like cheesy. Like I had to be
- 22:03Speaker 2: in the music business, and I had to be in
- 22:05Speaker 2: the music business with somebody that I really loved, you
- 22:08Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, Like if right, if we were
- 22:09Speaker 2: in these times, I would have you know, O vo
- 22:13Speaker 2: or something, it would have There's you know what I'm saying,
- 22:14Speaker 2: there's certain people that I love or respect, or a
- 22:17Speaker 2: team or a crew or I gotta be in that
- 22:20Speaker 2: organization because this is what I love, is what I
- 22:23Speaker 2: believe in, and I believe that I can add value
- 22:26Speaker 2: to what they're doing, you know what I'm saying. So
- 22:27Speaker 2: rock Ja to me was like, this is a guy.
- 22:30Speaker 2: This is the guy.
- 22:32Speaker 4: So at what point do they say after like they've
- 22:35Speaker 4: turned you down but you're still showing up.
- 22:37Speaker 5: They're like, you know what yeah.
- 22:40Speaker 2: It was a few months later and it was just like,
- 22:43Speaker 2: all right, the decision was yeah, Jane Bigs was always
- 22:47Speaker 2: quiet like Biggs obviously made decisions them. But I didn't
- 22:49Speaker 2: have no relationship with Biggs. Like Dame was the CEO,
- 22:53Speaker 2: obviously super talkative, you know, he was all spoken. So
- 22:56Speaker 2: you know, Jay was obviously you know who he is
- 22:59Speaker 2: is just more nerved and chill. But I got to
- 23:01Speaker 2: develop my relationship with Jay because of the studio because
- 23:04Speaker 2: when I so, when I transitioned from Street Team to
- 23:09Speaker 2: A and R, I was able to be in the
- 23:10Speaker 2: studio and hip hop was the A and R only
- 23:12Speaker 2: A and R at the time, And again I found
- 23:14Speaker 2: my way in. I was like, Okay, I want to
- 23:16Speaker 2: be in A and R, but I don't have Yeah,
- 23:19Speaker 2: I don't have an R experience. I've never signed an artist,
- 23:21Speaker 2: I've never signed a producer. I don't have A and
- 23:24Speaker 2: R experience. I think I can figure it out. But
- 23:26Speaker 2: so anyway, the way I figured it out was hip
- 23:29Speaker 2: hop was only an R at the time. N R
- 23:31Speaker 2: comes with creative direction and then it also comes with
- 23:34Speaker 2: administrative work. It has to be both. You have to
- 23:37Speaker 2: clear samples and through paperworking. But you also have to
- 23:40Speaker 2: find beats and find artists and find producers and find writers.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Hip hop only liked the creative side, so I was like, woo,
- 23:47Speaker 2: I'll do that administrative side. You know what I mean
- 23:49Speaker 2: because that was my way in. And day was like, ool,
- 23:51Speaker 2: you go handle out the hip hop and I was
- 23:53Speaker 2: like with leisure and that got me in the studio
- 23:56Speaker 2: every day.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Well, what you're saying is so vital as far as business,
- 23:59Speaker 3: Like I don't even know if you fully understand it,
- 24:01Speaker 3: because this is things that we speak about, Like, this
- 24:03Speaker 3: is the things that we speak about like seminar and
- 24:05Speaker 3: stuff like that, as far as the find find where
- 24:08Speaker 3: you can add value even if you don't necessarily like it.
- 24:11Speaker 3: You said, like you saw the opening where it's like,
- 24:13Speaker 3: all right, administrative work is something that he's not interested in.
- 24:16Speaker 2: You probably wasn't over there. Yeah, I'm not saying like
- 24:18Speaker 2: I didn't want to be.
- 24:18Speaker 5: I don't know what I was going to do, but
- 24:20Speaker 5: you saw that that's a value.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Another thing.
- 24:23Speaker 3: So we got a partner that we work with called
- 24:24Speaker 3: MG the mortgage God shot out to him and his
- 24:27Speaker 3: I love his story because how he approached me. It
- 24:29Speaker 3: wasn't like YO can I get on. It was like, yo,
- 24:32Speaker 3: I got clients for you, how can I add value
- 24:34Speaker 3: to me? And he was doing it for months for
- 24:36Speaker 3: free and never asks for anything. And then that just
- 24:39Speaker 3: led to like, okay, come on, and now we're just
- 24:42Speaker 3: develop the relationship now with business partners. And that's what
- 24:44Speaker 3: you did as far as even you took a step further,
- 24:46Speaker 3: even when they turned you down, you still added value
- 24:49Speaker 3: for free four months and then it's only a matter
- 24:53Speaker 3: of time before and so many people lose that, like
- 24:56Speaker 3: you can go to have an NBA from Harvard and
- 24:59Speaker 3: not understand and those principles and it's not gonna work
- 25:01Speaker 3: out for you because most people network from a selfish standpoint.
- 25:04Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, what king, how can you help me?
- 25:08Speaker 2: What can I do for you? Exactly great point, by
- 25:11Speaker 2: the way, And also I was gonna say, like I
- 25:15Speaker 2: also always try to be self aware. Again, I don't
- 25:18Speaker 2: know if I acknowledge that or realized that back then,
- 25:21Speaker 2: Like I didn't. I didn't probably even know what self
- 25:22Speaker 2: aware was right back then. But I mean, like my
- 25:25Speaker 2: mentality has always been that it's like, all right, these
- 25:27Speaker 2: guys don't know me, so they're not gonna just be
- 25:29Speaker 2: like yeah, fine, come on, cool, you're on. You know
- 25:31Speaker 2: what I mean. So you have to look at the
- 25:32Speaker 2: things from other people's side, like why why would they
- 25:35Speaker 2: want to hire me? Why would they want to put
- 25:36Speaker 2: me on? What's the just because they saw me around
- 25:38Speaker 2: a little bit and you know at clubs or at
- 25:41Speaker 2: concerts and what I'm saying. So I always figure, like,
- 25:43Speaker 2: let me put in, try to add my value to
- 25:46Speaker 2: the company for free, to prove to you that I'm
- 25:49Speaker 2: worth a shot. And by the way, I wasn't even
- 25:51Speaker 2: looking for a job. I was looking for a shot
- 25:53Speaker 2: at a job. So it's like whatever that was gonna
- 25:56Speaker 2: take it. Then once I was in, like I said
- 25:58Speaker 2: it was, I could tell you every transition. I'll give
- 26:02Speaker 2: you another example, and this was a good friend of mine,
- 26:04Speaker 2: Shaka Pilgrims, one of the most brilliant people. And yeah,
- 26:08Speaker 2: the business to so Shaka, there was a time where
- 26:13Speaker 2: they was about to go on tour. And remember I'm
- 26:14Speaker 2: in the A and R, but I want to go
- 26:16Speaker 2: on tour, Like I want to go on tour, but
- 26:18Speaker 2: I have no purpose on tour. Zero, The A and
- 26:21Speaker 2: R has no purpose on tour. But all the artists
- 26:23Speaker 2: were going so A and R. You know, I helped
- 26:25Speaker 2: with jay uh An R with Bleak being seeing all
- 26:29Speaker 2: of them were going to the tour, which is it
- 26:31Speaker 2: knocked life right, so I don't have Yeah, I don't
- 26:35Speaker 2: have no meanings to go. I don't have no reason
- 26:37Speaker 2: to go on tour. And then they were about to
- 26:39Speaker 2: hire a videographer, and I remember I always took photography
- 26:43Speaker 2: as a hobby, and and we had to work on
- 26:46Speaker 2: two albums. So Shaka was like, dang, you're gonna hire
- 26:49Speaker 2: this fucking dumba's photographer that I don't know instead of
- 26:52Speaker 2: just using Lenny. And I didn't. By the way, I
- 26:54Speaker 2: didn't even think of that, you know what I'm saying.
- 26:56Speaker 2: And I but I will up, I'll take photos for
- 26:59Speaker 2: I mean, I'm already an employees so it's not freeze
- 27:01Speaker 2: like I'm fine, I'm there. And then also we have
- 27:04Speaker 2: to work on two albums, so we was like, yo,
- 27:05Speaker 2: why don't we just work on an album. We get
- 27:07Speaker 2: a studio bus and we work on an album on
- 27:09Speaker 2: the road. And then he was with it, so we
- 27:11Speaker 2: were doing DJ Klue album on the Yeah, it was both.
- 27:15Speaker 2: So now I had multiple reasons now to go on tour.
- 27:18Speaker 2: So again I was going to figure out because I'll
- 27:20Speaker 2: tell you what wasn't gonna happen. I wasn't gonna not
- 27:22Speaker 2: be on that tour.
- 27:24Speaker 5: And now you're in the movie.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I filmed a lot.
- 27:27Speaker 5: I was gonna say, so, like you're the one.
- 27:29Speaker 4: Obviously you're because photography is something that I admired that
- 27:32Speaker 4: you do. I won't get to that later, but it
- 27:34Speaker 4: was like, now you found a way to get on
- 27:36Speaker 4: tour value add by shooting it, but now you're they're
- 27:39Speaker 4: actually using your footage to create.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Then that's how that's how the universe turned over. They
- 27:44Speaker 2: got a bunch of professional you know, shooters, videographers, whatever
- 27:47Speaker 2: it is. I don't this is the nineties, bro, I
- 27:49Speaker 2: don't even know what a videographer is. I don't even care.
- 27:53Speaker 2: But nobody was comfortable with them, right. And the thing
- 27:56Speaker 2: I had with my photos was that I could take
- 27:58Speaker 2: a picture of anybody and where, because everybody kind of
- 28:01Speaker 2: knew me or knew of me at the time within
- 28:03Speaker 2: the family. So rough Riders knew me, you know what
- 28:05Speaker 2: I'm saying, Red and meth they kind of knew me,
- 28:08Speaker 2: So you kind of knew me already. So it was like, oh,
- 28:10Speaker 2: that's that's Lenny. It's all good things. Like so the
- 28:12Speaker 2: same thing with the filming. They were filming, and then
- 28:15Speaker 2: like beans and all of them kept like yo, get
- 28:17Speaker 2: that get that ship out of here. And then it
- 28:20Speaker 2: was just like Lenny do They're not gonna tell Lenny no.
- 28:23Speaker 2: And that's how I got to film everything.
- 28:25Speaker 5: You know.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Who else took the videographer route to get in another
- 28:29Speaker 3: one of our friends, Jimmie.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yeah, he actually did a lot. I know,
- 28:39Speaker 2: I was gonna say. I used to use him as
- 28:42Speaker 2: an example with our guys who are like you know,
- 28:44Speaker 2: guys around like bleak or around being sequer, because like
- 28:48Speaker 2: Jim would like even be an engineer, and I know
- 28:52Speaker 2: that he didn't know the engineer, but he was like,
- 28:54Speaker 2: you know what, I know the basics. And I got
- 28:57Speaker 2: an assistant that works at the studio that knows everything.
- 29:00Speaker 2: And that was another bag. And then and then so
- 29:03Speaker 2: it's just like inserting yourself like okay, I could say
- 29:05Speaker 2: with directing, he was like directing videos again, you got
- 29:09Speaker 2: a director of photography. You're literally just he's gonna actually
- 29:13Speaker 2: film it. You're just like get this this seeing this
- 29:16Speaker 2: box this hot.
- 29:17Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying yeah, because even in the
- 29:18Speaker 4: line budget, like if the label has a line budget
- 29:21Speaker 4: and you're saying like I'll take that line.
- 29:22Speaker 5: You're the artist, but now you're the director to its.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Funny things with add value. And it's like, you know,
- 29:27Speaker 3: he's a street guy. I'm sure you sure he didn't.
- 29:28Speaker 3: He didn't know anything about filming the music video, but
- 29:33Speaker 3: he told he said he was doing that engineering security cam,
- 29:37Speaker 3: anything that cam needed to what he was doing until
- 29:39Speaker 3: he now he's walking in Virgil's fashion shows later. This
- 29:42Speaker 3: is true, guy has you know, sometimes you just have
- 29:45Speaker 3: to find a way to add value. And what you
- 29:47Speaker 3: said about the tourist key too, because a lot of
- 29:49Speaker 3: people want to travel and they don't add any values.
- 29:51Speaker 2: It's like you just cost the money if you're just
- 29:53Speaker 2: traveling for no reason, just being an extra like homie
- 29:56Speaker 2: and not not. You know, it's everybody has to you know,
- 30:02Speaker 2: it has to make sense, you know, and it's dope
- 30:04Speaker 2: to want to bring everybody and bring your people, but
- 30:07Speaker 2: everybody should have a purpose. And by the way, that's
- 30:10Speaker 2: what I love about rock because that rock always like
- 30:13Speaker 2: taught that or just kind of implemented that in the
- 30:16Speaker 2: minds of like the you know, the heads of the
- 30:17Speaker 2: labels or the main artists, or it's like you don't
- 30:20Speaker 2: make sure everybody's doing it. No matter what they're doing.
- 30:22Speaker 2: They could be this, they could be the barber, they
- 30:23Speaker 2: could be but as long as they're adding value so
- 30:25Speaker 2: that they're not just bodies that are just taking up
- 30:28Speaker 2: you know, spacing.
- 30:29Speaker 4: And so from an A and R standpoint, what's what's
- 30:31Speaker 4: the because I mean I read that it's all right.
- 30:34Speaker 5: It's the first song that you yeh, the first song
- 30:36Speaker 5: that you know, So what's that like.
- 30:37Speaker 4: After you've put this song together, it's a huge success,
- 30:40Speaker 4: ended up on obviously Volume too, and then the soundtrack
- 30:43Speaker 4: as well. How you like, I'm like you feel like
- 30:46Speaker 4: you're a part of this now like I'm a little
- 30:48Speaker 4: bit and.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Again right, it was like using using, using the resources.
- 30:54Speaker 2: You know, G Robertson one of the best managers in
- 30:56Speaker 2: the game. Me and G share the desk at Rock
- 30:59Speaker 2: So it's like you G, me, G and Hop shared
- 31:02Speaker 2: the death and then after a while, you know, Hop
- 31:04Speaker 2: was like the guy. Hop got his own office and
- 31:06Speaker 2: me and G just like this every day phone calls
- 31:10Speaker 2: business every day like this. Every artist that came to
- 31:13Speaker 2: see us, they had to see me with G or
- 31:15Speaker 2: G have to see it. So anyway, G Roberson managed Mahogany,
- 31:19Speaker 2: which was the producer of It's all Right. So it
- 31:22Speaker 2: was like Bleak was already there. Jay was a given,
- 31:25Speaker 2: and it was just like yo, G producer like you
- 31:28Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, came through and J Bleak and
- 31:31Speaker 2: Mahogany it's all right, all.
- 31:34Speaker 5: Right, that's more money the trail they don't know, they
- 31:39Speaker 5: know you too well.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Shot free. Well that was my introduction into A and R.
- 31:45Speaker 3: So what exactly does an A and R do though,
- 31:48Speaker 3: because I still feel like that's one of those titles
- 31:50Speaker 3: that people still have heard about what.
- 31:52Speaker 2: It's kind of like. And then the special responsibility as
- 31:55Speaker 2: a A and R stands for artists and repertoire, you babe,
- 32:00Speaker 2: serve as a liaison and the A and R serves
- 32:02Speaker 2: as a liaison between the artists and the label and
- 32:06Speaker 2: they have to you know, ride out with the production
- 32:09Speaker 2: of an album. So the A and R helps the
- 32:12Speaker 2: artists complete their album. And that's with anything creative, anything
- 32:17Speaker 2: from coming up with you know, records, from putting you
- 32:19Speaker 2: know them with you know, good writers or good producers. Uh,
- 32:23Speaker 2: maybe if there's a feature, you guys, and the R,
- 32:26Speaker 2: I mean good A and rs. They really go through
- 32:29Speaker 2: the whole creative process with the artists and they're coming
- 32:31Speaker 2: up with these things together or they're just assisting sometimes
- 32:34Speaker 2: just assisting the artists and anything they need, like oh, man,
- 32:36Speaker 2: I think I want to put you know, you know
- 32:39Speaker 2: whatever young Dog on this joint. The A and r's
- 32:41Speaker 2: job is not to go and get young Doug and
- 32:43Speaker 2: talk to the young Doug's manager and setting the record
- 32:46Speaker 2: and try and just try to get it done. Cause remember,
- 32:48Speaker 2: sometimes like a pitch, sometimes it's not you know, when
- 32:50Speaker 2: their peers. When Gunner is hitting young Doug, that's that's family.
- 32:54Speaker 2: That's easy. But you know, if maybe this is a
- 32:56Speaker 2: new artist so on deaf Jam and we're trying to
- 32:58Speaker 2: get young Doug, it's like, you know, a lot of times,
- 33:00Speaker 2: good artists will only work with people that they like
- 33:02Speaker 2: or they admire, or they you know, they vibuate, you
- 33:04Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. So sometimes when you have to
- 33:06Speaker 2: call out to somebody blindly and get a feature, it
- 33:10Speaker 2: comes with a pitch, and it comes with you know,
- 33:11Speaker 2: proving why it's worth favorite. Yeah, So an A and
- 33:15Speaker 2: R job to get the whole album done, but also
- 33:20Speaker 2: within the finances that you're given. So if you get
- 33:23Speaker 2: five hundred thousand dollars to make an album, that's what
- 33:25Speaker 2: you have to make the album for. That's recording, that's mixing,
- 33:29Speaker 2: that's mastering, that's features, that's everything that has to do.
- 33:33Speaker 2: You guys want to travel to Atlanta and the stand
- 33:35Speaker 2: Atlanta so month, it's everything that's coming out of that budget.
- 33:38Speaker 5: So we're not getting cancer.
- 33:40Speaker 2: I mean, let's talk about that little bit.
- 33:42Speaker 3: So the music record label would advance and artists, yeah,
- 33:47Speaker 3: like advance five hundred thousand dollars for the making.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Of an album an album, correct.
- 33:52Speaker 3: And then the A and r's job or his team,
- 33:56Speaker 3: management whatever. Now they have to use that five hundred
- 33:58Speaker 3: ticket to producers yep, to make a complete album.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Wardrobe uh not wardrobe, that wardrob would coming to marketing budget.
- 34:06Speaker 2: So you get a marketing budget, you get a recording budget.
- 34:09Speaker 2: They're different budget, studio time, and yeah, produce. This is
- 34:12Speaker 2: everything it takes to make in the album. So recording, travels, features.
- 34:17Speaker 2: If I get you know whomever litt uzivert Uziver is like, yo,
- 34:21Speaker 2: I want one hundred thousands. That one hundred thousand is
- 34:24Speaker 2: coming from that budget. So you gotta be smart a
- 34:27Speaker 2: big record, if you the biggest, the biggest. If you
- 34:30Speaker 2: go over budget, then you gotta go. And you got
- 34:33Speaker 2: to ask for reforecasts, which is the worst thing a
- 34:37Speaker 2: reforecasts would be. You know, I'm at for eighty right now,
- 34:41Speaker 2: and I know I got to do three more records
- 34:44Speaker 2: and Hip Boy did one of them, and you know,
- 34:47Speaker 2: Jenikos on one and she charged me, you know fifty.
- 34:50Speaker 2: I'm just making all this up. And now I know,
- 34:52Speaker 2: like damn, I got an overage of you know, one
- 34:55Speaker 2: hundred and sixty two thousand. Now I gotta go and
- 34:58Speaker 2: get that money. I gotta go over to mind whatever CEO.
- 35:01Speaker 2: I got to go to the financial department, finance department,
- 35:04Speaker 2: and now give them reasons why. And I'll be like,
- 35:07Speaker 2: but hip Boy did this joint? Like you know what
- 35:09Speaker 2: I'm saying again, it's all like a picture because now
- 35:11Speaker 2: you're asking for you know, it's just like a business.
- 35:14Speaker 2: It's like you know, you opened up a restaurant and
- 35:15Speaker 2: you already hit your limit, but you don't have barstools. Hey,
- 35:19Speaker 2: you don't have alcohol yet. Right now you got to
- 35:22Speaker 2: go back and like, look, this is where we at
- 35:24Speaker 2: this kind of went over, so you just have to
- 35:26Speaker 2: explain why and then usually.
- 35:27Speaker 5: Hopefully it gets approved. Yeah, and now so now this
- 35:31Speaker 5: makes a lot of sense.
- 35:31Speaker 4: And now I'm thinking about the early days well, I guess
- 35:33Speaker 4: like the early two thousands of Rockefeller, because when you're.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Looking for producers, you got you knows. Yeah, and so
- 35:39Speaker 2: maybe the quite a lesson.
- 35:40Speaker 5: Right, this is like a big blessing because now you
- 35:42Speaker 5: got just and you got Kanye.
- 35:44Speaker 4: They're killing everything. Plus you've got the hottest artists at
- 35:47Speaker 4: the time, you got Leak and you've got Siegel, and
- 35:50Speaker 4: Kanye is just bubbling. So now like those fees aren't
- 35:53Speaker 4: going to I'm assuming aren't going to be as high
- 35:55Speaker 4: go outside the faily exactly.
- 35:57Speaker 2: And it's always like, right, I mean, Mickey an album,
- 36:00Speaker 2: you're going all around to all the hot people. You know,
- 36:03Speaker 2: you're gonna probably exceed hundreds and hundreds of thousands or
- 36:05Speaker 2: even you know, millions of dollars. Right, if you're going
- 36:08Speaker 2: to Pharrell, you're going to this person and that person
- 36:11Speaker 2: you know, and all these numbers are you know, pretty high.
- 36:14Speaker 2: It's always best to try to formulate that album where
- 36:17Speaker 2: it's like okay, like let's say what hit boy does
- 36:19Speaker 2: with you know, Bennie the Butcher. It's like, it's so
- 36:21Speaker 2: easier to be like, okay, I got even if you
- 36:23Speaker 2: got five hundred for this album and a hip boy's
- 36:25Speaker 2: doing every track and now obviously he's gonna give you
- 36:29Speaker 2: probably a good rate because he's doing everything and it's
- 36:31Speaker 2: like a solace. Let's just say he's like, yo, give
- 36:33Speaker 2: me two fifty for everything, which is great. Now you're
- 36:36Speaker 2: one producer, got two fifty, you still got two fifty
- 36:39Speaker 2: left or recording and stuff like. But it's good to
- 36:41Speaker 2: like make deals like that. Anybody who had in house
- 36:44Speaker 2: production was amazing because you gotta it was usually like
- 36:47Speaker 2: a cap cap rate. You know what I'm saying, what's
- 36:50Speaker 2: his name with what's his name? With dipset? That was
- 36:53Speaker 2: what ta maker or something like? You know what I'm
- 36:55Speaker 2: saying like that, Yeah you have Maker, that's all.
- 37:00Speaker 3: But yeah, oh hit make you can't say not real.
- 37:04Speaker 5: He's a real I know now he's doing this.
- 37:06Speaker 2: No I think he's saying the way it's outs. Both
- 37:09Speaker 2: they both solid, but it's always better if you if
- 37:12Speaker 2: you can have either in house production or do deals
- 37:15Speaker 2: with I would do deals with people where it's like,
- 37:16Speaker 2: if I see they're doing more than two or three songs,
- 37:18Speaker 2: I would just do like a song deal. Look, we're
- 37:20Speaker 2: already three songs, and yeah, I know you could probably
- 37:23Speaker 2: come up with two more. Let's just do a song
- 37:24Speaker 2: deal for one hundred and now maybe I'm getting somebody
- 37:27Speaker 2: who charges forty five for a track, maybe for like
- 37:31Speaker 2: twenty twenty five a track, because I'm doing a whole bundle, Like,
- 37:33Speaker 2: let me just give you a hundred bundle. Yeah, you
- 37:35Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. You can, you can, but it's happened.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Let's say I bought five tracks from this producer for
- 37:46Speaker 2: whatever being sequel, but he only used three. I can
- 37:50Speaker 2: kind of I can shift that over to another artist.
- 37:52Speaker 3: And so let me let me ask you this. As
- 37:54Speaker 3: far as the budget ding, what happens. If it goes
- 37:57Speaker 3: under budget. You have to keep that money. You get
- 37:59Speaker 3: to keep them keep that money. It's all in that
- 38:01Speaker 3: fancy the way. You got to pick it back so
- 38:04Speaker 3: or you can let the rec company keep it and
- 38:05Speaker 3: not pay it back.
- 38:06Speaker 2: So if I get five hundred, I only spend four,
- 38:09Speaker 2: you could take the four home if you want. You're
- 38:10Speaker 2: still gonna have to recoup it, but or you can
- 38:13Speaker 2: just say keep that and now you only have to
- 38:15Speaker 2: recoup four instead of recooping five. So because everything has
- 38:17Speaker 2: to be paid back, right, So let's get into that.
- 38:19Speaker 3: So all right, when the record label gives you a
- 38:22Speaker 3: budget for the marketing budget the music. But let's say
- 38:24Speaker 3: it's a million dollar budget, half a million for market
- 38:26Speaker 3: and half a million for music. Now you're a million
- 38:29Speaker 3: dollars technically like in the whole, and that goes against
- 38:32Speaker 3: your record sales.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Right, the first million.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Dollars that you see, it'll get recouped, goes back back
- 38:38Speaker 3: to the company three to sixty anything like, Yeah, any
- 38:40Speaker 3: the first million dollars you make from everything goes.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Whatever your deal is, the number of the amount, whatever
- 38:45Speaker 2: deal is made for you to spend, that money has
- 38:48Speaker 2: to be recouped before you can start anything, see anything.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Correct, And that's why artists always a lot of times
- 38:55Speaker 3: end up in the red because they might not even
- 38:56Speaker 3: make enough thief exact the record unfortunately.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Correct. Yeah, And people spend a lot, and you know
- 39:02Speaker 2: when you're spending, and it's kind of like an imaginary budget.
- 39:06Speaker 2: You know, it's different, right when you're spending. You ever
- 39:08Speaker 2: go to a restaurant or like one of those food courts,
- 39:11Speaker 2: whereas there's one in Philly, I think, and you could
- 39:14Speaker 2: go to any station you want and just keep You'll
- 39:17Speaker 2: tend to do that more because it's like, even when
- 39:19Speaker 2: you're ordering the restaurant, you'll tend to do that more
- 39:21Speaker 2: because you're not actually paying one by one, and then
- 39:23Speaker 2: when you're at the end, you're like, went hard, you
- 39:26Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. But when you're paying for stuff,
- 39:28Speaker 2: you're more conscious to like, all right, that just came
- 39:30Speaker 2: out three different times. One was seventy eight dollars, one
- 39:33Speaker 2: was sixty two, and what was you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 39:35Speaker 2: you're just more conscious. So when you're working on an album,
- 39:37Speaker 2: you're not no money is coming.
- 39:38Speaker 3: From your pocket, even though it is coming technically, but
- 39:41Speaker 3: you're not looking, but you're looking like somebody else.
- 39:43Speaker 2: That's why artists have a tendency to just spend, spend, spending,
- 39:47Speaker 2: because it's like it's coming from there, It's coming from
- 39:49Speaker 2: this imaginary record company budget that and even when you
- 39:53Speaker 2: run out, you're like, come on, let me get more.
- 39:54Speaker 2: I know there's more there. This is a multi billion
- 39:56Speaker 2: dollar company.
- 39:57Speaker 4: And then mine is like I haven't made any money, Well,
- 39:59Speaker 4: you haven't made enough money to make money, is the
- 40:02Speaker 4: real thing?
- 40:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you made yeah, right, But like I said, once
- 40:06Speaker 2: that money is recouped, then you start making the money
- 40:08Speaker 2: on top of it after that. So album comes out,
- 40:13Speaker 2: sells whatever, whatever it makes, you know, three hundred thousand
- 40:17Speaker 2: dollars or four hundred thousand dollars for the label, you
- 40:19Speaker 2: still have you know, maybe six hundred more to recoup
- 40:21Speaker 2: and then you know it's of sells. And once you're recouped,
- 40:24Speaker 2: and then you start making So that jadakiss. Why is
- 40:26Speaker 2: the record company's designed to keep the artists in debt? Yeah?
- 40:29Speaker 2: I got a bunch of questions on that, a lot
- 40:31Speaker 2: of questions, And a lot of times I feel artists,
- 40:36Speaker 2: again it's all reach his own, but they take more
- 40:39Speaker 2: money than they probably need, you know what I'm saying,
- 40:42Speaker 2: Whereas like some artists don't they only want but they need,
- 40:46Speaker 2: or they only want what you know, what they're going
- 40:48Speaker 2: to use. So again, you know, but sometimes people also
- 40:51Speaker 2: feel like, hey, it's almost probably gonna be impossible to
- 40:54Speaker 2: recoup this, so I'd rather take as much upfront as
- 40:57Speaker 2: I can.
- 40:59Speaker 3: And it's well, it's likely you're never going to treat
- 41:01Speaker 3: other people's money like your money. Like if it's your
- 41:04Speaker 3: everything we do is out of our pocket. So like
- 41:05Speaker 3: somebody asks, like what's the budget for the Like we
- 41:07Speaker 3: travel all the time, where it's like our budget is
- 41:09Speaker 3: we gotta make enough money to pay the MX bill.
- 41:12Speaker 3: It's like But if it's somebody else, then it's like.

- 44:30Speaker 4: the standpoint of you were studying photography that started filming.
- 44:34Speaker 2: No, I didn't do treatments, but I made sure that.
- 44:37Speaker 2: So I wanted to educate myself on every part of
- 44:39Speaker 2: the business, and what I thought would be the best
- 44:42Speaker 2: way was to be a part of it all. So
- 44:45Speaker 2: again I obviously attached myself to Jay. I was fortunate
- 44:48Speaker 2: enough to be with him in the studio. So you know,
- 44:50Speaker 2: those studio hours are long, you know what I mean.
- 44:52Speaker 2: So we got to develop a really great relationship all
- 44:55Speaker 2: of us that were in there whoever at the time. Right,
- 44:57Speaker 2: So now Jay's like, Okay, I gotta leave to go
- 45:00Speaker 2: to this do this radio interview at Flex. I'm gonna go,
- 45:04Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Now I can develop my
- 45:06Speaker 2: relationship with Flex. Now I can develop even though I
- 45:07Speaker 2: don't do radio, Why wouldn't I want to know Flex?
- 45:10Speaker 2: So why wouldn't I want to know you know whomever
- 45:13Speaker 2: the person was right? Same thing that he's going to
- 45:15Speaker 2: do a video, Well, I want to be on the
- 45:16Speaker 2: video set, like I want to see all his works.
- 45:18Speaker 2: I want to see and I will fuck with the
- 45:19Speaker 2: video production person who and the video commissioner who actually
- 45:23Speaker 2: puts the whole video together, which at the time was
- 45:25Speaker 2: like Margo Wainwright at Depth Jam. So stay close to Margo,
- 45:29Speaker 2: learn how to work the budget, learn how to work.
- 45:31Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, how do you hire? You know,
- 45:35Speaker 2: Hype Williams like, how do you hire these people to
- 45:37Speaker 2: do it? What's that process? So I just made sure
- 45:39Speaker 2: that I was at everything that was going on, and
- 45:41Speaker 2: I learned retail, I learned radio. I learned even if
- 45:44Speaker 2: I wasn't going to do it. I wanted just to know,
- 45:47Speaker 2: just to know. And in fact, they like, maybe one
- 45:48Speaker 2: day I'll run a record company. I never as I
- 45:51Speaker 2: got into the business. I never wanted to do it,
- 45:53Speaker 2: but I wanted to learn every dvery aspects so that
- 45:55Speaker 2: I know what was going on.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I was, because that would be my next thing,
- 45:58Speaker 4: like you learn all these days. Yeah, but that you
- 46:01Speaker 4: just said like you didn't want to run your own company.
- 46:03Speaker 4: But I know, like Gene and how they created their.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Own company because they were smart early, Yeah.
- 46:08Speaker 4: They created so hip hops is nineteen seventy eight, was there?
- 46:11Speaker 4: Did you ever say like, let me maybe create my
- 46:14Speaker 4: own management after you saw the success of the guys
- 46:16Speaker 4: you literally sat across the table from.
- 46:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna be honest with you, and that's why I
- 46:20Speaker 2: love those guys. And they were smart and they did
- 46:22Speaker 2: you know, what they were supposed to I always and
- 46:25Speaker 2: please don't take this the wrong way. I mean, it's
- 46:27Speaker 2: in the best. Those guys were geniuses. Anybody who goes
- 46:30Speaker 2: to create a company of science artists are genius. I
- 46:33Speaker 2: chose my freedom over having a company, having artists, having
- 46:39Speaker 2: all that stuff. You know, it comes with work, it
- 46:42Speaker 2: comes with you're responsible for these people's lives. They were
- 46:44Speaker 2: responsible for Kanye West life just blazed life, you know
- 46:48Speaker 2: what I mean. I mean, when you help somebody sign
- 46:50Speaker 2: to your company, you know, you go hard for them.
- 46:52Speaker 2: And we went hard. And Jay was enough for me
- 46:55Speaker 2: just being involved with Jay and being and I didn't
- 46:58Speaker 2: manage him. I didn't. I just worked with him and
- 47:00Speaker 2: I was close to him, and I knew that he
- 47:02Speaker 2: was going to be the biggest, So that to me
- 47:04Speaker 2: was enough. I didn't need to run a company and
- 47:07Speaker 2: take up, you know, even more of my time. I
- 47:09Speaker 2: wanted my freedom to be able to until this day,
- 47:12Speaker 2: I do what I want when I want.
- 47:15Speaker 5: Or as a meeting to thank the captain.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm on the boat, you know what I'm
- 47:19Speaker 2: saying that, and that's what I prefer. I got the
- 47:21Speaker 2: drop of a dime, I could go to London tomorrow
- 47:23Speaker 2: and do it. And again not saying that you can't
- 47:25Speaker 2: when you have, but if you have a bunch of
- 47:26Speaker 2: client you have a company, there's staff meetings you have
- 47:29Speaker 2: to go to every week, sometimes three and four, and
- 47:31Speaker 2: there's a marketing meeting, and then there's a budget meeting,
- 47:34Speaker 2: and then there's a release state meeting, and then there's
- 47:36Speaker 2: you have to be involved in all the aspects. The
- 47:38Speaker 2: geniuses of the world, Kevin Lyles, the lew yor Cohen's,
- 47:41Speaker 2: the Jay Browns, like, that's big responsibility that comes with
- 47:46Speaker 2: big money too. I just want to be able to
- 47:49Speaker 2: do what I want.
- 47:51Speaker 5: I want and they always got to be a concert pursuit.
- 47:54Speaker 2: As long as I take care of my job.
- 47:57Speaker 3: So being at Rockefeller at the beginning stage is Volume
- 48:01Speaker 3: two comes out and everything changes and it was so crazy.
- 48:04Speaker 3: I think I was in seventh grade. Volume two.
- 48:08Speaker 2: That was in seventh grade.
- 48:10Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, maybe like eighth grade.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Maybe I was in junior high school. So I remember
- 48:18Speaker 3: when that record came out because I was a jay
- 48:20Speaker 3: Z fan before that. On the first I wasn't like
- 48:23Speaker 3: check the check the I wasn't.
- 48:28Speaker 5: He's a noge guy.
- 48:29Speaker 2: But a little little I was I can't be.
- 48:32Speaker 5: A landing on that side of the table.
- 48:34Speaker 2: We on this side.
- 48:36Speaker 3: You know what's so crazy that he I was such
- 48:40Speaker 3: a die hard NOD fan.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Let's talk about it, because about switching sides all the time.
- 48:45Speaker 4: No I love he was a fan, and that's my
- 48:47Speaker 4: favorite album all the time, No matter.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Takeover came out and he played it for me over
- 48:51Speaker 3: because I was in prep schas to play, but I
- 48:52Speaker 3: was in prep school in mass Chustters. He played it
- 48:54Speaker 3: for me over the phone. I think I might have
- 48:56Speaker 3: four before I went to Massachusetts. I was home, he caught.
- 48:59Speaker 3: He was, I would because this is I was home.
- 49:02Speaker 3: You play take Over to me over the forces, like, listen,
- 49:03Speaker 3: your man is done and you said your man is
- 49:06Speaker 3: done that You said your man said that we're not
- 49:09Speaker 3: gonna put that my life said, now I was done
- 49:12Speaker 3: and your man is done. Never they played me the
- 49:14Speaker 3: whole song and I'm listening to it on the phone.
- 49:17Speaker 3: I said that should whack.
- 49:18Speaker 5: Bro.
- 49:19Speaker 2: You did say that.
- 49:20Speaker 4: Now, you did say that. I promised, you did say
- 49:24Speaker 4: that this is whack. I was like, you buck, it
- 49:26Speaker 4: ain't whack. I never said it was based off for loyalty.
- 49:30Speaker 2: For loyalty, Yeah, but you know, in this business, we
- 49:33Speaker 2: can't be biased. Like no, no, you that's a fact.
- 49:36Speaker 2: That's like me saying it is whack. It is not whack.
- 49:38Speaker 2: That's a fact. I hated it, you.
- 49:40Speaker 4: Know what I'm saying What that felt like though at
- 49:41Speaker 4: that time, because like it was, I was just talking
- 49:45Speaker 4: about it, right, like you you die hard and you
- 49:48Speaker 4: notice records heating up New York and he's trying to
- 49:51Speaker 4: deny it. Fat Joe's like you can't deny this, Like
- 49:55Speaker 4: what's happening in the building, Like is the room shaking?
- 49:58Speaker 5: Like we just walking around like now we we're gonna get.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Him personal I speak personally, because I don't like to
- 50:03Speaker 2: speak for other people. For personally. I was like I was,
- 50:07Speaker 2: I was, I was fucked up by it.
- 50:12Speaker 4: You gotta leave me there, Okay, Okay, that's all none,
- 50:14Speaker 4: that's real, Like you said, right, that was the same passion,
- 50:18Speaker 4: the same passion that made him say Takeover was whack.
- 50:21Speaker 2: You know, it was the same passion that again I'm
- 50:24Speaker 2: not like, you know, I understood what ether was. I
- 50:26Speaker 2: didn't like it. I mean no, I mean like I
- 50:30Speaker 2: didn't like what it was. Like the record was a
- 50:32Speaker 2: great record, amazing record. I didn't like what it was
- 50:34Speaker 2: and who was going to so same thing. My passion
- 50:38Speaker 2: and my loyalty was like and you are at the
- 50:41Speaker 2: time you listen to the radio, you know, it was
- 50:43Speaker 2: all like oh Jus done, Jesus. You know how people
- 50:47Speaker 2: like you know what I'm saying, they immediately forget everything
- 50:51Speaker 2: and by the way, anything like but anyway, So being
- 50:56Speaker 2: in your city with the guy you think is the
- 50:58Speaker 2: savior of everything, the best guy, best artists in the world,
- 51:02Speaker 2: and hearing the people change and hearing the people switch sides,
- 51:05Speaker 2: and hearing the people just credit jail whatever it was
- 51:08Speaker 2: that was going on in the radio, and this I was.
- 51:11Speaker 2: I was tight. I was like you know the author
- 51:15Speaker 2: mean was I was like, whatever that is, That's what
- 51:20Speaker 2: that was me in the city, just like cringing was
- 51:24Speaker 2: what happens, right, it goes. It was necessarily it was.
- 51:28Speaker 2: And that's when I realized, like how human, how real,
- 51:33Speaker 2: and how like selfless? J was right that it was
- 51:37Speaker 2: like two ways of the time, like no, no, no,
- 51:42Speaker 2: I was like just angry, like some bullshit people New
- 51:45Speaker 2: Yorker tripping like you know, like because it was, like
- 51:47Speaker 2: I said, everybody was turning. It was like say it's
- 51:50Speaker 2: a dope record, Say it was crazy, Say oh he
- 51:52Speaker 2: got him back. Whatever. Don't say Jay's done or Jay's
- 51:56Speaker 2: dad or you know what I'm saying, even what you
- 51:58Speaker 2: doing that? You know you could be like okay, but
- 52:00Speaker 2: he's not He's not done, you know what I'm saying.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Like anyway, that was my I was. I was passionate.
- 52:04Speaker 2: I was almost had like watery eye, like from being angry,
- 52:08Speaker 2: not like in Jay. I wrote this two way sent
- 52:12Speaker 2: it to them. I don't know. I guess since a
- 52:14Speaker 2: group of like a few of us and and he
- 52:16Speaker 2: hit me. He called me this guy who's going you
- 52:18Speaker 2: know whatever, he's going through. And Jay's super calm and collective.
- 52:22Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. But I'm saying, still, you
- 52:25Speaker 2: gotta think again, right, you gotta be self aware. Can't
- 52:27Speaker 2: be selfish. This is this is his moment to figure
- 52:32Speaker 2: out or his moment to whatever. You can't be putting
- 52:34Speaker 2: your ship on. Imagine what he's going through. Imagine what
- 52:36Speaker 2: the person is going through. And here this guy goes
- 52:39Speaker 2: calling me like calming me down, you know what I mean, Like, yo,
- 52:42Speaker 2: no stress, Like we're good. This is this is part
- 52:46Speaker 2: of the journey. It is like he's calming me down
- 52:49Speaker 2: on something that he's going through. That leadership, that's leadership,
- 52:52Speaker 2: and that was that That to me was just like, man,
- 52:54Speaker 2: I'll never leave this man's side.
- 52:56Speaker 7: We got strong aft Ever, Yeah, that's auful, powerful moment,
- 53:01Speaker 7: but so that my guy.
- 53:09Speaker 2: I didn't clear. I declared what I said.
- 53:10Speaker 4: Like one of the biggest moments in hip hop was
- 53:12Speaker 4: when I saw those two on stage, just because of
- 53:13Speaker 4: what they meant to me personally, both of us.
- 53:15Speaker 2: We both did that wasn't it wasn't dead.
- 53:18Speaker 4: I bought like New York and Philly, I bought like
- 53:19Speaker 4: thirteen tickets to the show, Like it was crazy, like
- 53:22Speaker 4: to see it because it was like I thought he
- 53:25Speaker 4: was going to know and I thought he's gonna just
- 53:26Speaker 4: nois again because it was like industry. It was like
- 53:30Speaker 4: anybody who had an issue, and it kind of wasn't that.
- 53:32Speaker 4: It was kind of like a uniformity thing. And Puff
- 53:34Speaker 4: came out. I remember him being drunk on stage and
- 53:36Speaker 4: I was like, I'm just happy to witness this because
- 53:38Speaker 4: we had grown up.
- 53:39Speaker 5: We saw exactly we saw.
- 53:41Speaker 4: We didn't see pok in big yeah reconciliation.
- 53:45Speaker 2: And I wanted that so bad, Like behind the scenes,
- 53:47Speaker 2: I wanted, like, you know, we there's something that I
- 53:50Speaker 2: hope for or something that you know came up here
- 53:52Speaker 2: and there Like it was just like when the time
- 53:54Speaker 2: is right and I know it was gonna happen, when
- 53:55Speaker 2: Kanye is puttings on the record.
- 53:57Speaker 4: That's that was a sign we made it because it
- 53:59Speaker 4: came after right after that was if ever remis on
- 54:02Speaker 4: the on the.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Album that was that was a big moment.
- 54:04Speaker 3: But let me ask you, all right, Volume two comes out,
- 54:06Speaker 3: everything changes and jay Z becomes a global superstar. It
- 54:09Speaker 3: sells I think like five million records. What's that song
- 54:12Speaker 3: with Annie knocked? Like, don't try to do that?
- 54:17Speaker 2: I want that so just slipped my mind. Song legends
- 54:24Speaker 2: one of the biggest records, not even the hip hop
- 54:27Speaker 2: and not that song is legend. No, no, no, that
- 54:32Speaker 2: song is legend. But like, so everything changed, Say what's
- 54:36Speaker 2: that song? What? Yeah, it's a little everything traumaticmatic.
- 54:44Speaker 5: Drillmatic, dramatic.
- 54:47Speaker 3: One of the best albums ever made. Shout out to
- 54:51Speaker 3: that vio too. That Bio two is classic. But everything
- 54:54Speaker 3: changed and Rockefeller it was never the same. So what
- 54:57Speaker 3: was it like for you being and build it and
- 54:59Speaker 3: how did the business start to change, cause I'm assuming,
- 55:01Speaker 3: like you know, that's when the business really started to
- 55:03Speaker 3: take off. So you had an inside like you know, viewpoint.
- 55:06Speaker 3: How did that change as far as like scaling up
- 55:09Speaker 3: very quickly?
- 55:10Speaker 2: It changed because like you said, right, it made it
- 55:14Speaker 2: made the world see the global icon that we knew
- 55:17Speaker 2: Jay was right. Because you know, you have something, you know,
- 55:21Speaker 2: you know how good it is, you wait for the
- 55:23Speaker 2: rest of the world to catch up. And that's what
- 55:25Speaker 2: that was for us.
- 55:26Speaker 5: You know.
- 55:26Speaker 2: I mean again, whoever was with them, they knew me
- 55:29Speaker 2: joining the team ninety five, I knew, you know what
- 55:31Speaker 2: I'm saying, the reasonable doubt through volume one through I
- 55:35Speaker 2: knew it was just like when does everybody else can
- 55:36Speaker 2: to know? And the anti I guess you know, it
- 55:38Speaker 2: was the record that broke obviously of public knowledge. But
- 55:42Speaker 2: you know, for us, it was like like I said,
- 55:44Speaker 2: even on my front, on a personal front, you know,
- 55:46Speaker 2: my mom stopped giving me applications job because she thought
- 55:50Speaker 2: it was you know what I'm saying. My family thought
- 55:52Speaker 2: music was, like you I said, a joke, but you know,
- 55:54Speaker 2: I mean, it's just not believe, It's not a real
- 55:56Speaker 2: thing that people look at it like not you know,
- 55:58Speaker 2: you know, unless you saw they went through motid and
- 56:00Speaker 2: all that they're looking at this like just so that
- 56:04Speaker 2: made it real. Having a hit record, a global hit record,
- 56:08Speaker 2: made it like real, made j Z lack of a
- 56:11Speaker 2: better a real thing for the outside world, for the
- 56:13Speaker 2: people who were outside of us, who we were waiting
- 56:16Speaker 2: to catch up, like we're waiting for y'all to catch
- 56:17Speaker 2: up to see what he is and what he can do,
- 56:20Speaker 2: and this is just an inkling of what he has.
- 56:22Speaker 2: So that changed a lot, you know what I mean.
- 56:24Speaker 2: And even with business, I just feel like how they
- 56:27Speaker 2: move forward and how they did their deals, and how
- 56:30Speaker 2: they were already businessmen in the sense you know what
- 56:33Speaker 2: I'm saying, they were already making money prior to they
- 56:36Speaker 2: were already you know, buying things and assets, and they
- 56:40Speaker 2: had cars and you know what I'm saying. So it
- 56:43Speaker 2: was just like the business was catching up to them,
- 56:45Speaker 2: you know what I mean. I don't feel like I mean,
- 56:47Speaker 2: obviously everybody learns as they go to certain things, but
- 56:50Speaker 2: I feel like those guys were super smart and they
- 56:51Speaker 2: just you know, it's like okay, now they get it.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Now we can we can activate all these things that
- 56:56Speaker 2: we wanted to you know what I'm saying. So, I mean,
- 56:59Speaker 2: and this is the toughest part.
- 57:01Speaker 4: It breaks our heart because after obviously Blueprint it was
- 57:05Speaker 4: crazy and two thousand and then he has Faded the
- 57:09Speaker 4: Black in two thousand four and we think like this
- 57:11Speaker 4: is it, You're gonna retire tomorrow.
- 57:13Speaker 2: Happens at Rockefeller break up broke up?
- 57:18Speaker 5: Well, yeah, it hurts.
- 57:21Speaker 4: So you're in this situation now you're part of this building,
- 57:24Speaker 4: like what what what is it like now that you
- 57:26Speaker 4: know we have theme kind of here with dipset movement
- 57:30Speaker 4: and we have state p well still with state property too.
- 57:33Speaker 4: But and Jay's still like the biggest artist there and
- 57:36Speaker 4: kind of still doing his own thing.
- 57:38Speaker 5: For I guess Kingdom Come comes.
- 57:39Speaker 2: What was just like, yeah, you didn't talk about Kanye.
- 57:44Speaker 5: He's still he's still beggingan Kanye at the time two
- 57:46Speaker 5: thousand four.
- 57:48Speaker 4: Yeah, because Fade the Black two thousand and four, he
- 57:51Speaker 4: was getting to like, no, let's not forget it was
- 57:55Speaker 4: Aauline told me I could buy two tickets.
- 57:59Speaker 3: No Kanye was when did Kanye become the biggest Jesus walks?
- 58:02Speaker 2: No, that's still the first for so I would probably.
- 58:05Speaker 4: Say second, I think graduation, he'd graduation, he was already
- 58:08Speaker 4: out of it. That's I think that's when he becomes
- 58:10Speaker 4: he says, I think the second happens, what happens late registration.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Not yet, not yet.
- 58:15Speaker 4: I think the Kingdom come graduation thing, and then Jay
- 58:18Speaker 4: standing next to him against fifty and that now he's
- 58:21Speaker 4: out here.
- 58:21Speaker 2: Now it's Kanye there.
- 58:23Speaker 5: You may not. I don't know what you're saying.
- 58:25Speaker 2: No, I mean the timeline will always be a little
- 58:28Speaker 2: like you know what I'm saying, But I mean you're both used.
- 58:30Speaker 2: But at that time, I think everybody was already like
- 58:33Speaker 2: you know, moving in their own purpose and moving with
- 58:36Speaker 2: who they were like moving with you know what I'm saying,
- 58:38Speaker 2: Like those things have kind of been established. It wasn't like,
- 58:41Speaker 2: you know, I know some people think like there's like
- 58:43Speaker 2: some like breakup and then in the room and people
- 58:45Speaker 2: like you going inside of you. It wasn't going this
- 58:50Speaker 2: is This was years in you know what I'm saying,
- 58:52Speaker 2: from an amazing company that they built together that you know,
- 58:55Speaker 2: and in birth so many superstars from the staff, you
- 58:59Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. Natural, So so again, it was
- 59:01Speaker 2: just at that time you you rocked with who you
- 59:04Speaker 2: rocked with, you know.
- 59:04Speaker 3: What I'm saying, But like the gave us some advice
- 59:06Speaker 3: to like not break our thing up. What did you
- 59:09Speaker 3: learn from that? Like seeing that whole situation play out
- 59:13Speaker 3: that maybe looking back on it, you could give advice.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Or like, you know what I mean. That's hard to
- 59:19Speaker 2: answer only because you know, like it's it's it's home
- 59:21Speaker 2: and it's like people go through what they go through.
- 59:25Speaker 2: You don't you know, you don't get to even me.
- 59:26Speaker 2: I don't probably even know all of the reasons, you
- 59:28Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, And I really don't. Yes, I
- 59:30Speaker 2: was on the inside, and yes I was there, but
- 59:32Speaker 2: like I also kept my head down. I also you
- 59:35Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, I was reserved. I was also
- 59:37Speaker 2: you know, I just kept my head down and I
- 59:41Speaker 2: didn't you know, I didn't involve myself with things that
- 59:43Speaker 2: weren't my you know, let's say business or so again,
- 59:47Speaker 2: I don't know what everything is about, but I just
- 59:50Speaker 2: I wrote, you know, I wrote it out, and I
- 59:52Speaker 2: wrote it out as a team player. And I always
- 59:54Speaker 2: gave one hundred percent. And I always give all three
- 59:57Speaker 2: of them credit, you know what I'm saying, Like they
- 59:59Speaker 2: all helped may make me who I am today, all
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: of them individually. Dame individually was like, yes, okay, you
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: could do the same in our ship, and Biggs supported
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: me and Jay always just he just let me rock.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: And for me it's like Jay just letting me rock
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: and do whatever. It was like, I'm not never gonna take,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: you know, advantage of this. I'm not never gonna take
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: it for granted, you know what I'm saying, and not
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: just proved the transition was smooth, and then you have Rock.
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: I was going right there with.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: It and then Rock, Well what point did you become
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: a manager? I don't want to be after death jam
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: so Rockefeller, Jay retires, well whatever he goes back when
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: he retires, I leave to go to Virgin Records for
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: a year. I didn't want to work anywhere else. But
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Jay really really wasn't doing anything, Like really was the retirement? Yeah,
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Like after that he wasn't doing He really I'm done
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: And there was no work. There was no label, there
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: was no you know what I'm saying. But I was
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: still on his like his staff, and I was just
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: like Jay, I'm getting these offers or all these labels
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: like Yo, Nias come and Jay's like no, no, no, good,
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: just stay here, and I'm like, yeah, but we're not
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: doing anything. Yeah, by the way, I did it like that,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: like I don't even want to take your money. He
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: was paying me as a staff. I didn't even want
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: to take your money if we're not He was like, no,
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: you're good, Like you know what I'm saying. He's a
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: real one, right. And then one of my mentors, which
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: is one of his really really great friends, Big John Platt, one.
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: Of the biggest publishers on the list.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: No, he's the biggest one.
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: Yeah, we watched his radar and was the biggest.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: John was doing some stuff at Virgin Records and and
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: uh and wanted me to come, uh help out as
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: an R. And then he could go to Jay directly,
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: like yo, Lenny, and then you know Jay was got
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: bet that's that's family ghead. So did that for like
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: a year, and then after that Jay took the job
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: death him, and then I got summoned over the he
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: became a manager. No, still a and R did that
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: for the whole time Jay was there, So you know,
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: I got to work with different artists Neo and Dream
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: and Rose and just everybody. What I'm saying, yeah, I don't.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: She's a part of that that she's a part of it.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: I wasn't part of like you know, a project, A project.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, she was in. And then when Jay
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: left Death Jam, that's when he went to go start
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: rock Nation. But when he left, you know, obviously the
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: whole team was going so talk to Jay Brown, just
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: all of us and La Reid asked Jay if he
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: could leave one person behind, could he leave me behind?
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: Because we had so many projects there. So he's like,
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: while you guys go get that started, can you just
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: leave Lenny here to still work here for a little
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: while so that, you know, because we had Jada, we
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: had a bunch of people that was signed kind of
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: like either through us or we're like our fami, or
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: we were like helping out on projects, and to not
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: leave them, you know what I'm saying, to not leave
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: it like this is the this is the Ross Cheesy era. Yes,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: and I love that because I got to stay not
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: under like you know, the rock shot, you know what
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: I'm saying. And while they were starting that and I
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: got to work with all those artists. The management started
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: right after that. The management started with Fabulous and talent
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: and that's what rock Nation. Yes, so all right, let's
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: talk about that.
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: So managing your first client being DJ call, that's a
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: good client. Earlier, earlier, that's another good client. So you
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: had fab first. What's the role of a man? This
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: is another thing kind of like an A and R manager.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: Is the role of man?
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: Can we always have managers managing my managers? We have
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: a manager to get what the role of a manager
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: is too?
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Uh, help create, situate, maintain, you know, every aspect of
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: your career. Right, that's from you know, revenue to the
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: brand deals to the right you know, pr looks to
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: helping build your brand, to any and everything that has
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: to do with your career and helping it elevate and
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: evolve and become successful. You know. And it's really it's
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: a full time job. And it's as you know, you're
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: dealing with the artists. And then this doesn't come with
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: just the artists, right, It comes with the artist family,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: It comes with the artists friends, it comes with the
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: artists entre, it comes with the artists, comes with everything.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: And it's like, you know, it's a real time consuming,
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: you know, but if you're passionate about your client, and
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: you're passionate about what you guys have. It never really
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: feels like work. Every job is stressful here and there,
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: But I mean, I just love being able to control,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: you know, the destiny together. I love, you know, being
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: with a client or being with the artists, or being
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: with whatever, whoever, whoever you manage, and being able to
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: sit down, put those plays together, put a plan together,
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: and execute them. You know what I'm saying in any
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: kind of different way. Oh, we want to deal with
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: these five companies, woom, Let's try to reach out and
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: maybe we just get three of them, but still it's
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: like we didn't have any of them. Or let's try
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: to put this tour together with these artists. That would
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: be amazing going on and reaching out to the people
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: and getting them and getting the money and getting the
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: funds and getting them. Like being able to do these
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: things from scratch for me is like so for feeling.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: So how I got into management was I was still
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: in the an R at the time, but like I
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: told you from the beginning, I was so heavily involved
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: with everything that was going on with an artist. So
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: if I ain't d an artist, I didn't think that
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: was enough, right, because yeah, we're doing an album, but
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: I don't My life or my job with you doesn't
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: stop when we leave the studio. Now, I want to
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: make sure your video is crazy, so I'm gonna check
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: out the treatment. I want to make sure your your
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: touring is crazy. I heard remever, you know t I
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: was going on tour. I gonna get you on that tour.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: So I was doing all of these managerial duties without realizing,
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: and that's how it happened with Fave. It was just
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: like you already did this, this, that and that. You
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: know what I mean, Those are like five things a
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: manager would do, and you just my handle, like just
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: manage me, you know what I'm saying. And that's how
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: because at first, which I love to tell people to
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: inspire them to not be scared, right, to not be scared,
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: to take a chance and not be I was scared
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: a lot of the time, and you know, fearful of failure.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: I just don't want to fail, and I would turn
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: things down because I can't manage you. I'm not a manager.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: I didn't go to business school. I can't be you know,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: I can't tell you about business I didn't go to
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: But again, you know. Fortunately in our culture we get
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: to learn things right hands on. How many people we
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: see shooting videos and shooting movies that they didn't go
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: to film school. They didn't go you know what I'm saying.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: So it's like with everything and we always figure it out.
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: So that's how I made the transition into management. It
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: was like I'm already doing shocka pilgrim again, and some
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: of my peers like, what, like you already you're doing
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: it now, like beyond, you're doing more than there. They're
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: not him. But I'm saying to some other people like
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: you're doing more than their managers doing it by to
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: look at it like that. I look at it as
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: like I want to win. I never looked at all
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: the things I did for the artists I work with
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: as like yeah, I'm doing I'm manager.
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: No.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: I looked at it like we gotta win. I put
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Fab on the jay Z tour one time because it
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: was like Jay's going out. He needed a little you know,
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: he wanted a little support, and it was like him
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: Fab him, Fab Sierra and it was like ooh, I
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: hooked it up and I spoke to Jay and it
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: was like cool, like I want my artists to win.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: So I want them to be on the best tour.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: I wanted them to be the best brand, deals, the
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: best everything, you know, at the best.
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: Very selfless of you, it's very very selfish.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you take a percent. Managers get a percentage. Yeah,
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: it's like what's the percentage. The percentage could be anything
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: that you negotiate. It's anything from five percent to twenty
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: twenty five. It's just that's all on you and what
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: you negotiate with your client. You know, sometimes people come
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: and they have two managers, maybe they split it ten
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: and ten, or sometimes people come in they have a
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: road they have a role manager. But a road manager
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: is just that's more like a no, it's more like
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: a it's a position. I mean all positions. But a
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: manager would get twenty percent of a deal. Like a
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: role manager may not necessarily get twenty percent of a show.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: They can if that's what they work out with the artists,
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: but they could just be paid as an employee, you know,
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: weekly or by a wayly for that service. Role manager
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: is essentially everything that a manager does, but only for traveling,
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: for traveling purposes. So my role manager, make sure that
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: you know our itinerary is in place that we are
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: the hotels locked in, maybe advancing and getting there first
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: and making sure our keys is riders, just setting up
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: everything on the road literally to this restaurant, making sure,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: maybe sending security over to get a little you know,
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: to advance and make sure it's good, and just they
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: manage the things in the road, so you know, necessarily
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: wouldn't get a percentage from that. Some do. Some role
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: managers also book shows, so it's like I'm booking your
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: show in North Carolina and I'm taking you and making
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: sure you're good as your role manager, and they may
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: collect off of that booking.
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: But so at this pe, so you have fab and
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: you had calent. These are early on.
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: Did you try to take on more clients or did
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: you realize, let me just focus on these two. Then
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: I guess the other part is that is that since
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: you're so entrenched taking on so many tasks role that
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: they have on your personal life, right because it sounds
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: like it's super time.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: I never took on a lot of clients because I
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: didn't want you know, Calm and five alone were enough.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: You know, that occupied most of my time, and I
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: I always got a lot of offers. I always got
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: a lot of new rem people coming at me like
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: I want you to manage me. You know, big artists,
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: artists that are you know, signed and doing well, or
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: new artists that have super potential. But I don't want
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: to take anybody on and not be able to be
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: there for them like I would want to. So I
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: turned down a lot of stuff. I helped make some
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: management plays happen, whereas like maybe I can't do it,
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: but then I still, you know, suggest them or bring
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: them into Rock Nation, and because we have a whole
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: team of fifteen twenty managers or whatever, you know what
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: I'm saying. So I could be like, hey, you know,
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: money back Yo is looking for management. We'll bring them in,
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: we'll start it, get it going, and then he'll go
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: and then like Mike Brinkley will take it over or
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: Mike Brinkley will you know what I'm saying. So I've
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: done that sometimes too, Like necessarily I can't take it
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: off for myself, but I could bring it on into
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: the company and make sure that they're situated and then
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: we move forward. That's very important, espcially in our situation.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: I never really realized the important to a manager until
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: we actually got one, and so much stuff from you know,
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: answering emails and working out deals and booking hotels and
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: make sure the car service is there. So much stuff
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: that you don't fully realize, and then especially you start
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: to scale, takes.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: A load off of you. You know what I'm saying,
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: And that's what we're there for.
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: So when you said the rock Nation thing, I'm like,
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: all right, that makes a lot of sense now because
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: you always I always hear people getting signed the Rock Nation.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: Yeah. So rock Nation is a full entertainment company, publishing, label, management,
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: streaming service, sports agency, et cetera, et cetera. You know,
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: spirit a lot of people own the management.
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: So when you see like we saw result of go
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: up there and.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Meg Khaled Joe, I mean so many is soon.
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: Yeah, let me ask you before we before we wrap,
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: we can't leave without talking about one of the biggest
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: people have ever come through the Rockefeller system, Kanye West. So, Kanye,
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: when you when you was there, obviously when he first came.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Through, you said you saw a Jay you knew Jay.
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: Was going to be the biggest. Did you know Kanye
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: was going to be the biggest? Like, what was your
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: impression he was always dope did there was no doubt.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: I mean even obviously from his tracks, from what he
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: was doing even before a rap, it was no doubt.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Like this guy was a prodigy. He was was special.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: You can't make stuff like he was making and making
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: those tracks and coming up with those hooks and coming
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: up and not think that he wasn't going to be special.
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: But I wasn't involved in all of that, Like I mean, so,
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: I mean people are watching the doc now, I haven't
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: seen yet, but yeah, but I mean like it's coloring, yeah,
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: but I wasn't. Yeah, I just I always stuck with
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Jay and I kept say that, yeah, so, and it
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: had nothing to do with nobody else, you know what
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: I'm saying. Like that's why even in the doc, you
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: don't see me rng close to j J. Was that
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: bad decision to make no for everything, i'n't care he
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: had an interview you at Double XL like I was there.
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: I'll be waiting in the car a lot of times
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: going to meetings and I'll wait in the car just
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: to you know what I'm saying, hold like a driver,
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: like almost like it didn't matter whatever, But yeah, man,
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: And like I said, that's how we developed, you know,
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: a really great, an amazing relationship. And you know, at
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: the same time I was shooting, so you know, and
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: I looked at Jay like how back in the day,
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: how I would look at photos and look at like,
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: you know, Marvin Gabe photo in front of you know, Motown,
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: or how I would look at a Sam Cook photo
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: with Malcolm X. And you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: That's how I looked at Jay. Was like, damn, I'm
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: I'm taking these pictures there. Way he goes this ship
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: maybe twenty years might be crazy, Like this is Jay
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: talking to DMX. So this is Jay, you know, talking
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: to doctor Dre about something and I'm just capturing these things.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: So that's how I looked at it.
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: So you have a time capsule of history. So I
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: know you you were talking. I mean there was maybe

- 1:15:46Speaker 2: To be shocked at in America. She ended up not
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: showing up. But when I got us the ticket because
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: she's the best person, who's like a mystery and like.
- 1:15:56Speaker 4: We spoke though for like the hours, I was like,
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: this is this is this is positive Bryant a legend.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, the season with us at fifteen. Yeah,
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: and she's the president now. Yes.

- 1:16:25Speaker 2: see the hat.
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: And I know you guys talking literacy and we have
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: to and I know obviously the last memory we have
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: of him is the higher video and I know you
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: were there.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: I actually got the video.
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: I actually the picture you took, Steve, the picture you
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: took of him in the blue sat and I actually
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: posted that went on March thirty first, Oh, when it happened.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: I have ever captured. We had a good conversation about
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: that with Steve.
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: Yeah, your your relationship, your thoughts on obviously just brilliant,
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: brilliant man that.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Is brilliant who just was ahead of his time. Who
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: you know what you guys are doing and what you
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: guys are teaching. Imagine him having that foresight and having
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: that mind state from a youngster, from a team, I'm saying,
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: and him and his whole team and the whole team
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: is just incredible, man, And the way they've been carrying
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: on the legacy, it's been amazing. They're working on a
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: whole bunch of really dope stuff, the Puma obviously capital stuff.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: You know, Lauren does just everything like that whole team is.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: You know, that relationship came through We all knew him individually,
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: but it really came through Emory. Emory developed a really
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: amazing relationship with him, and that's how we all got
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: tired with him. And I mean that guy man was
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: the best. He was the best because I also like
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: he did little things that like that. Also, like j
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: would do where it's like you know, and for me,
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: for somebody who loved photography, you know, there's times where
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: you know, Jay might be somewhere and then Nip would
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: do this often and like actually see what I'm seeing
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: and then kind of pressure me and asks me, like
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: to catch it, you know, I mean, so that day
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: with the car, you know what I'm saying, we on
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: the side, were on the break and the blue the
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: blue cars there and you know they're they're switching film
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: or whatever, and I'm looking at it and I look
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: at him and I'm in my head, I'm literally like, damn,
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: I should captah to catch him on this, you know
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: what I'm saying. But I'm like he had just got there.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: I didn't want to, like, you know, bother him too quick.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: And he looked at me. He was like, you want
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: that ship, nigga, And I was like, like he knew
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: what I was. I was like, I was like right,
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: and he was like, come on, nigga, let's get it.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. He went up against that
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: car and I swear I took like three or four.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: I usually if they let me keep going, I'm I
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: keep going. But I took three or four and he
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: was like, you got it. And I was like I
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: got it. And he was like you want to take
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: some more? And I was like, nip, I got it,
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: like I saw it right away, took like three four
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: pictures and but but but but again, just that thing,
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: that interaction he would always do it. Man. Him and
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: Lauren were my favorite to also catch together. You know
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: what I'm saying, Like I see them mountain about and
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: he'd be like, come on, well, I don't even want
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: to get this, you know what I'm saying, Like, and
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: I love capturing them man, you.
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: Know, just listening to you talk man, just the humility right,
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: Like it's just like, yo, I'm a fan of this too,
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: Like yeah, I am, I am.
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: I'm doing what I'm doing, but like I'm still a
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: fan of this.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: First, that's dope fan first. So the fact that these
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: people even let me allow me to have this kind
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: of like you know what I'm saying, relationship with them,
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: and they allowed me to be in their lives and
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: they more than anything, like they trust me, you know
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: what I'm saying, And I'll never violate that trust. Man,
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: I'm twenty five years in. I ain't never have no
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: weird shiting, you know what I'm saying, Like, I'll never
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: violate that trust.

- 1:19:33Speaker 3: chance to do it. Anything, Thank you, thank you anything,
