- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 0:16youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:22For those of you who are watching the video, you'll
- 0:24notice that I have a little Co host with me today.
- 0:28I came in and the High Stakes Girls had the studio set up for
- 0:32their episode and I was like, you know what?
- 0:34Let me just put Pumpkin on that chair beside me.
- 0:36Let's set up the studio a little differently because last time
- 0:39when she was on the pod, you guys loved seeing her and it's a
- 0:42lot more comfortable to have her on a separate chair than on my
- 0:45lap with my laptop as well. So she's ready to help me spill
- 0:49the tea. Pumpy, can you say hi to
- 0:51everyone on camera? Say hi.
- 0:55She's like please do not disturb my nap.
- 0:58Anyways, I hope you guys all had a great weekend.
- 1:00I had a good weekend and I'm feeling a lot better than I was
- 1:02feeling on Thursday. So thank you so much to everyone
- 1:06who was so kind to be in the comments.
- 1:08All right, let's get into the stories for today.
- 1:11OK. The first story that I have for
- 1:12you guys today is I need to talk about this K Pop Forever tribute
- 1:16concert that's going viral everywhere.
- 1:18So on Thursday night, AK Pop tribute concert took place in
- 1:22Belfast that has sparked intense backlash from some parents who
- 1:26bought tickets, who claimed that the show was boring,
- 1:30inappropriate for children and featured hardly any songs from K
- 1:34Pop Demon Hunters. So footage of the concert and
- 1:38complaints from attendees started going viral on TikTok
- 1:40this weekend, with people comparing it to Willie's
- 1:43Chocolate Experience, that flop of an event that took place in
- 1:47Glasgow in 2024. Because people felt like they
- 1:50were so duped. I am beyond disgusted by the K
- 1:55Pop performance at the SSA Arena in Belfast.
- 1:59It was not K Pop and the kids are left absolutely heartbroken
- 2:05and crying. We couldn't sing along to any of
- 2:07the songs and they only knew the songs at the end, guys.
- 2:10If you're going to Kepap, do not go.
- 2:11To Kepap and. To have to scam.
- 2:14And it's an absolute, more like a show and it's disgusting and
- 2:21it's pure. It's a pure wave.
- 2:23Do not feel it. Everybody is sleeping.
- 2:25Literally everybody who's done their kids AP.
- 2:27Purple hair. And all and to joke everybody is
- 2:32actually, we're actually at the confidence.
- 2:34K Pop and the Odyssey should be ashamed of themselves.
- 2:38I am so annoyed. Both my girls first ever concert
- 2:42and it was the worst experience. Totally was not what it was
- 2:45advertised to be. I totally understand it was not
- 2:48meant to be. Lots of people are saying about
- 2:50it. Was K pop demon hunters?
- 2:52It was AK pop genre thing advertised as this.
- 2:56What we seen and got on stage was not that half naked people,
- 3:02belly tops, hot pants, no pants on, touching the shells in
- 3:09inappropriate places, dancing inappropriately, that ways in
- 3:14which children did not need to see.
- 3:16OK, can I first just say I feel like almost nothing compares to
- 3:21Willie's chocolate experience. OK, so people comparing it to
- 3:24that, it was literally nothing like that.
- 3:27This was like an actual performance.
- 3:28If it was a good performance, I don't know, I wasn't there.
- 3:31But regardless, it seems like the event company, what they
- 3:33promised is what they delivered. There was just some type of
- 3:37miscommunication between the parents who bought tickets
- 3:40expecting something different, but that is not necessarily how
- 3:44it was marketed. So this is directly from the
- 3:47BBC. Quote.
- 3:48Caroline McGrath from North Belfast was there with her
- 3:51seven-year old daughter and said while they had a great time, the
- 3:54show was quote, not what we expected it to be.
- 3:56She told BBC Radio she was not aware that K Pop was a full
- 4:00genre. Quote I thought it was good.
- 4:03But then there was some parts that were a little bit raunchy
- 4:05and there were some things where the K pop songs that the kids
- 4:08didn't know. And there was also some parts
- 4:11that my friend's daughter felt was inappropriate and she is 7.
- 4:15She explained the main songs from the K Pop Demon Hunters
- 4:18were not on until the end when it hit the interval.
- 4:21I seen so many children crying and people leaving.
- 4:24I'm sorry I saw so many children crying.
- 4:26I'm not laughing at children crying but this is this is on
- 4:31the parents. I'm sorry this is not how the
- 4:33performance or the concert I mean was marketed.
- 4:35It was not marketed as AK pop Demon Hunter concert.
- 4:40Just because you don't know that K pop is a full genre as you
- 4:44just said, doesn't mean that it was the event's fault.
- 4:47I'm not a parent, so you can disagree with me, but I believe
- 4:50if you're going to spend money on an experience for your
- 4:53family, you should be at least across your children's media
- 4:58diet enough so you understand and what you're attending, what
- 5:01you're consuming and how that fits into culture.
- 5:04I feel like a lot of these issues that we're seeing on
- 5:06social media around this concert could have been avoided if the
- 5:08parents understood that K Pop is not exclusive to K Pop Demon
- 5:13Hunters. Now the organizers of the event
- 5:15and tons of users on social media have come out defending it
- 5:18because again, despite what these parents are saying, it was
- 5:22not AK pop Demon Hunters concert.
- 5:25It was AK pop genre tribute concert.
- 5:28K Pop is just like any other genre, right?
- 5:31It's like a pop genre. So it's like if you're going to
- 5:34a pop performance or a tribute concert for, I don't know, some
- 5:37type of pop star, you know it. It's not necessarily going to be
- 5:41kid friendly if you're taking your kids to Sabrina Carpenter.
- 5:43That was like a huge topic of conversation a couple years ago
- 5:46with her short and sweet twirling.
- 5:47Just because Sabrina Carpenter was a Disney kid and has this
- 5:49kind of like, you know, sweet kitchy little stick going on
- 5:53right now doesn't mean that she is made for kids.
- 5:56So the BBC actually did speak to a parent who was not offended by
- 6:00the show. She said, quote, it's no
- 6:02different to if you went to a Katy Perry concert, if you went
- 6:05to a Beyoncé concert. Yes, the girls were wearing wee
- 6:07belly tops or wee bras, but they had tops over them and they had
- 6:10rips in their jeans. So the arena where it took
- 6:13place, SSE Arena, its website described the show as featuring
- 6:17quote fully live performances of smash hits from Blackpink, BTS
- 6:21twice, soda pop golden and more, calling it the ultimate non-stop
- 6:25party for all ages. So I guess the all ages part of
- 6:28it, maybe, I mean, but it was I, I, I don't know, I wasn't there
- 6:31again. But I mean, according to people,
- 6:33some people who were there who are kind of defending it, like
- 6:35they're saying it wasn't inappropriate.
- 6:37It was obviously just not what these parents expected.
- 6:39And right on the website of where you buy the tickets, it
- 6:43says the names of all of these different K pop bands where
- 6:46they're doing tribute songs for. So in a statement released on
- 6:49Thursday night, Aiken Promotions and the SSE Arena said that they
- 6:53were quote, aware of some feedback following the Belfast
- 6:55show. They added that the performance
- 6:57is part of a global tour and was designed to celebrate the K pop
- 7:00genre as a whole hole, not just demon hunters.
- 7:03OK, the next story that I have for you guys today is that Cat's
- 7:06Eye's Mano announces her hiatus. And now the father of a fellow
- 7:12Cat's Eye member, Daniela, he's in the comments section
- 7:17basically being so rude about Manol.
- 7:19So if you're unfamiliar with Cat's Eye, I feel like maybe
- 7:23I've spoken about them. I don't know.
- 7:24Annabelle is constantly trying to get me to talk about Cat's
- 7:27Eye on the pod, she loves Cat's Eye.
- 7:29I do like some of their songs. I listen to them at the gym.
- 7:32So if you're unfamiliar with Cat's Eye, they are a girl
- 7:34group. They were created by Highbee and
- 7:36Geffen, basically testing out whether the K pop method should
- 7:39work on an international scale. The girl group was put together
- 7:42through a survival show with around 20 candidates and ended
- 7:45up with six members Sofia, Laura, Megan, Daniella, Yuncha,
- 7:50and of course, Minnow. The selection was not without
- 7:52criticism. Many of the viewers were rooting
- 7:55for different combinations or specific girls to debut.
- 7:58Minnow was a fan favorite but was also a colorizing figure.
- 8:02Now, over the weekend, it was announced that Menaul would be
- 8:05going on a hiatus from the group.
- 8:07Hybee and Geffen first issued a statement which read quote
- 8:10hello. After open and thoughtful
- 8:11conversations together, we are sharing that Menaul will be
- 8:14taking a temporary hiatus from group activities to focus on her
- 8:18health and well-being. We fully support this decision.
- 8:21Katzai remains committed to showing up for one another and
- 8:23for the fans who mean everything to us.
- 8:26The group will continue scheduled activities during this
- 8:28time, and we look forward to being together again when the
- 8:31time is right. Many fans were shocked by this
- 8:33announcement. However, MENA has also been very
- 8:36vocal about her health and mental health before, so it
- 8:39wasn't like a totally unprecedented reason.
- 8:42And then MENA also issued her own statement via Weaver's
- 8:46quote. Hi friends, I want you to hear
- 8:47this from me. I'm healthy, I'm OK, and I'm
- 8:49taking care of myself. Thank you for checking in.
- 8:51Sometimes things unfold in ways we don't fully control, but I'm
- 8:55trusting the bigger picture. Thank you for standing by me.
- 8:59I love you endlessly and I can't wait to see you again.
- 9:02So obviously that is a pretty different statement to what the
- 9:08management released. Her decision to lead with the
- 9:11fact that she is healthy and taking care of herself raised
- 9:14eyebrows. And then of course people were
- 9:16confused about her commentary around the bigger picture.
- 9:19So after this conspiracy theories really kicked off, many
- 9:22Cat's Eye fans were convinced that Menaul was being forcibly
- 9:25put on hiatus, and there are a couple theories floating around
- 9:28online as to why that may have been.
- 9:31The 1st is people speculating that she broke her contract due
- 9:34to various personal activities. Many fans are claiming that this
- 9:37may be a result of Menaul taking part in short films with her
- 9:40friends. Others are speculating whether
- 9:42it's because she went viral earlier this year after shouting
- 9:45Free Palestine while leaving the artist for AIDS benefit concert.
- 9:50Neither of these reasons are confirmed, just recounting
- 9:53speculation here. The second theory is that Hybee
- 9:55was always planning on reducing Cats Eye to five girls as
- 9:58opposed to six. Many fans have pointed out that
- 10:01it seems like Hybee has taken moments to test how fans would
- 10:04respond to A5 girl group, and there are a couple of examples.
- 10:08One was when Cats Eye collaborated with Glossier.
- 10:11The girls, minus MENA took a picture in front of the
- 10:14Billboard. Another was when Cats Eye
- 10:15performed alongside Lavee. MENA was actually not there for
- 10:19that performance either. However, perhaps the most
- 10:22significant example is the Gabriella performance video Mana
- 10:26was also not into. Mana was also not there due to
- 10:30injury. That being said, there are other
- 10:31instances where one member was not there for a performance or a
- 10:34shoot. It's not just Mana, but it's
- 10:36definitely a little bit sass. Her wording versus theirs and
- 10:40all of these instances. Plus, social media users have
- 10:43also noted this is not the first time that Hybee has cut a girl
- 10:46from a group. This speculation only
- 10:47intensified when an alleged confidential document leaked
- 10:51from High B that said Mana would be quote phased out of the
- 10:54group. There is no confirmation that
- 10:57this document was real, but social media has really run with
- 11:01it and it's giving delusional conspiracy theory believing
- 11:06everything we see on TikTok. Please, we need to bring back
- 11:09media literacy. So all of this has LED social
- 11:12media users and fans to believe that Hybee is treating MENA
- 11:15unfairly. And of course, in this instance,
- 11:18we also cannot ignore that MENA is the only black woman in the
- 11:21group. And now Daniella's dad Rafael
- 11:23has reportedly been leaving a series of comments under a post
- 11:27by Paddy Pop Culture about the situation.
- 11:30According to screenshots he wrote, the show must go on with
- 11:33or without a member. Cat's eye is bigger than one
- 11:35girl. And in response to someone who
- 11:37said I am the hugest girl group fan and normally OK with members
- 11:40leaving, the Cat's eye is a set six piece.
- 11:43He allegedly wrote 5 is OK too. And then he also allegedly
- 11:47commented, come back when you're ready to work as in to Manal.
- 11:51We could not verify these comments, of course, but Paddy
- 11:53pop culture has posted about this himself and the account
- 11:56that it was commented from has been deleted, which is
- 11:58definitely SUS. So that is the full breakdown
- 12:00about what is going on with Manal leaving and Daniella's dad
- 12:04allegedly leaving unhinged comments.
- 12:06All right, the next story that I have for you guys today, This is
- 12:08a quick one, but Ned Fulmer Ned Fullmer, his dating app profile
- 12:15on the dating app field has he claims been doxxed and he's
- 12:20having like a full crash out on Twitter slash X So former try
- 12:24guys star and notorious wife cheater Ned Fullmer is crashing
- 12:27out on Twitter and he was all weekend after claiming one of
- 12:30his dating profiles was doxxed. He wrote apparently somebody
- 12:33doxxed my field profile. Cool, saves me 2999 a month.
- 12:38I truly give zero fucks and invite you to roasted,
- 12:41especially Bebe Rexha. Why?
- 12:44Why bringing Bebe Rexha into this?
- 12:46The reason people think the reason why he brought Bebe Rexha
- 12:48into this for the actual context is because a few days ago Bebe
- 12:52Rexha had tweeted asking her followers to like set her up
- 12:55with a successful man, like an eligible like single successful
- 12:59man. And I I assume people were
- 13:01tagging Ned like I think that's why he's commenting this or like
- 13:04it brought her into this. But everybody's like leave Bebe
- 13:06Rexha out of this. Why is she always copping strays
- 13:09lately? OK he kept going like I said
- 13:11this was a crash out. Follow me for more divorced dad
- 13:13unhinged energy or whatever or unfollow me I don't care.
- 13:17Hope this gave you a laugh. OK so for anybody that doesn't
- 13:20know field is a dating app for quote open minded individuals
- 13:23which includes ethical non monogamy.
- 13:26So honestly you know what at least he's like learned his
- 13:28lesson from the Ariel situation. Maybe monogamy is not for him
- 13:32and he should enter into open relationships consensually.
- 13:35So we got to give him that. OK then he started posting
- 13:38screenshots of his profile where you can also see his photos and
- 13:42he's like raiding his photos of himself and you can see in his
- 13:46profile he called himself Edward.
- 13:48He says 38 man straight and in one of the screenshots you can
- 13:51see Dom leaning switch looking for a bratty sub 510 ENFJ
- 13:57athletic and currently sporting a beard.
- 14:00I'm not going to read you all of his tweets about him rating
- 14:03himself in his photos, but I'm going to say this is not a man
- 14:06who's unbothered. You know, when his first tweet,
- 14:08when he's like, whatever, I don't care.
- 14:10I literally give zero fucks or whatever he said, like follow me
- 14:13or don't like. This is a man that is deeply
- 14:16bothered. This is a man that cannot handle
- 14:18that his return to the Internet was not well received.
- 14:23And this is where I feel like Ned Fulmer just needs to read
- 14:25the room. Do I think it's right that he
- 14:27was allegedly doxed for this? Absolutely not.
- 14:30I think that's super invasive. That's super fucked up.
- 14:33But he's also like a famous Internet personality who has
- 14:35been in the news a lot the last few months, and he is still
- 14:38largely hated. I just feel like maybe he should
- 14:40have taken a beat and maybe he would say back to me like, well,
- 14:44it's because I don't care. Like, I don't care if people see
- 14:46this. I don't care if people know who
- 14:48I am, whatever. But I'm going to say, as I said,
- 14:51that these tweets are not from a man that doesn't care.
- 14:54OK. And the last story that I have
- 14:56for you guys today is I'm going to break down what could have
- 14:58turned into beef but actually didn't, which is like a nice
- 15:01change for mini scroll between the two brands.
- 15:04Can I have a sleepover and mode mischief.
- 15:06So at the end of last week, Australian based small business
- 15:09Can I have a sleepover posted a video of a tote bag that had
- 15:13been in development for quite a while.
- 15:14The bag was denim and has this like polka dot pattern bikini
- 15:18top and bottom detail stitched on.
- 15:20And in the TikTok, the brand's founder Jazz holds up the bag
- 15:23while saying I swear I didn't copy you Mode mischief,
- 15:26referencing a popular Aussie based clothing brand.
- 15:29I swear I didn't copy you mode Mischief.
- 15:34I don't know whether I should put this bag into production
- 15:36now. So I recently started showing
- 15:38this bag on my socials and asking whether people would be
- 15:41interested in it to put it into production.
- 15:43It's this gorgeous denim tote bag, but the most amazing
- 15:47Australian brand, Mog Mischief, a brand that I really look up to
- 15:51that I am obsessed with, just released a bag that's kind of
- 15:55similar like last week and I'm like crushed.
- 15:59I don't know whether I should go forward and put it into
- 16:03production or whether people will think I copied even though
- 16:06I have been posting this on my socials.
- 16:08Mode Mischief has seen so much growth over the past few years
- 16:12and tons of it. Girls are wearing their clothes
- 16:14all the time like Emma Chamberlain, Hailey Bieber and
- 16:17over the past month, Mode Mischief's founder Mia has been
- 16:20teasing the launch of a new tote bag that also has a bikini
- 16:24design. So both of the tote bags
- 16:26basically show like a bikini chop and then the handles are
- 16:30like the bikini halter parts. Obviously, the tote bags are
- 16:33different, but the concepts are very similar.
- 16:37So Jazz took to TikTok to share her side of the story and
- 16:41basically plead with the algorithm and Mode Mischief and
- 16:45users who are going to come across her content to be like,
- 16:47please, I promise. Like I did not copy them.
- 16:50And Mode Mischief's brand account ended up responding to
- 16:53the video and they wrote it's super cute.
- 16:55Thank you for the love for our brand.
- 16:56We don't think it's similar. Wishing you a successful launch
- 16:59and now after this positive response, can I have a sleepover
- 17:03announce that the bag was officially open for pre-order
- 17:06Now while the brands have been supportive of each other, social
- 17:09media users have not necessarily been as supportive.
- 17:13If you look at the comments section of these videos, people
- 17:16are talking about like which bag is better, which one they like
- 17:19more. And honestly that's just exactly
- 17:21why Jazz made this video to begin with.
- 17:23Because I believe what she's saying that this was in
- 17:25production before she saw Mode Mischief's bag.
- 17:28And if she had released it, nobody would have believed that
- 17:31her comments section would have been slammed.
- 17:33There would have been drama videos made about how like, you
- 17:36know, they ripped off Mode Mischief and all this stuff.
- 17:38Like it would have just been this huge issue for her.
- 17:40Even though I would say in general, TikTok users tend to
- 17:44support small businesses, of course, over like bigger, more
- 17:47successful brands. But like I said, Mode Mischief
- 17:50is super culty right now and it could have come across as a RIP
- 17:53off if you didn't know the story.
- 17:55So I mean, that is why she tried to get in front of it, you know,
- 17:58and I think that was probably the right move.
- 18:00And now not only are people going to to hopefully understand
- 18:03her side of the story, but also I think she has so many more
- 18:06eyes now on her. I'm so happy that mode Mischief
- 18:10came back like this and they were so like understanding about
- 18:13everything and like, it just is going to become like a non issue
- 18:16for them hopefully. And I love that.
- 18:18We love that in a world where we are seeing so many like small
- 18:23businesses just get ripped off all over online and fashion is
- 18:27so notorious for that. Like it's just such a savage
- 18:30industry when it comes to copycats and stuff.
- 18:33And you know, people are suing each other all the time for
- 18:35things like this. And I just like love this.
- 18:37Like this is a really nice interaction and I hope that jazz
- 18:40makes a lot of money on this. All right, guys, Well, that's it
- 18:42for mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 18:45I love you guys. Please remember to rate review
