- 0:00Welcome back to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike Christino with Dan Hurley.
- 0:04We're just wrapping up talking about the Empire Classic Coach. We were talking
- 0:08about, you know, assists and in turnovers that game Yukon eighteen and six.
- 0:14I think, if I'm reading this right, that's a heck of a
- 0:18ratio to have against Texas, and you needed it because that was a quality
- 0:22team you've beat in that title game. Yeah, and yeah, we we
- 0:26dealt with some foul trouble in that one, particularly with Cam in the first
- 0:31half. And you know, play without staff, I think is going to
- 0:36you know, prove to be a really really critically important player before it's all
- 0:41said and done. I just loved, you know, our maturity. And
- 0:46you know, let's say, you know, ball secure, job ball security
- 0:51is job security. You know the old Aaron Rodgers you know quote. So
- 0:57I listen, good guards, they rarely turned the ball over, and good
- 1:02guards make the game look easy. And I thought our guard play was really
- 1:06really good then, and two of your guys were you know, they all
- 1:08played well, but I mean two guys stood out obviously, Samson Johnson fifteen
- 1:14points, eight rebounds in that game, spectacular athleticism, played twenty eight minutes.
- 1:19And you've been talking about this when you know camp started. This guy's
- 1:23been playing well for us, he's been scoring, and we never we didn't
- 1:26get to see him, obviously because they're you know, secret scrimmages and all
- 1:30that stuff. But true to your word, this dude played one of the
- 1:33best games I've seen at the Garden by a college guy in a while.
- 1:38Yeah, tremendous. It's I think, a tremendous performance and big splash plays,
- 1:46really super athletic plays, and just I think a great compliment to Donovan
- 1:52and a guy that I think now that he's had some because he's healthy,
- 1:57he's mature, or you know, he's he's really ready to I think have
- 2:04a huge impact on the season. Him and Hassan, I think you are
- 2:07two of the most important people on the roster, if not the two most
- 2:10important people. Just to have those veterans that you can bring in off the
- 2:15bench that can either stabilize or elevate. Yeah, Samson, I had I
- 2:20had husky fans texting me, you know, freaky athleticism. They're all jacked
- 2:23up about it. It was good to see he's such a good kid.
- 2:28And the other thing was carab Ben in that game. I mean, we
- 2:30all know that he's a shot maker, and he's a clutch player, and
- 2:34he's he's got all these championship qualities, but man, he made three big
- 2:38ones in that game that if you don't get them, you might not win
- 2:42that game. Yeah, he you know. Listen, Alex hasn't overall had
- 2:46the start to the year, you know, in terms of three point shooting,
- 2:51but he's shown, you know, his versatility has improved. He's got
- 2:57more elements to his game offensively, he's been able to put on the floor
- 3:00and you know, and get some deeper two's and and then even show,
- 3:05you know, the ability to make some hard contested end of shot clock type
- 3:09of shots. And you know, when things tighten up the last six seven,
- 3:13eight minutes of the game, you know, and you've kind of you
- 3:16know, you've run a lot of your offense, and you know you've kind
- 3:21of you've run out of some tricks. You may you may hold you know,
- 3:24one or two little little things as long as you can, but at
- 3:29some point and the game situations come down to you're just having really good players
- 3:34that can that can go win a battle and go make a player a shot.
- 3:38Yeah. I mean you talk about this, and I know your players
- 3:42are like this most most every night. They're kind of fearless. And that's
- 3:46what I felt like in that game by him, is like, Okay,
- 3:49we need something here. Okay, Caravan makes a shot and he makes a
- 3:53really contested hard shot and then he does something else again like that, and
- 3:57then I mean, as as a teammate of a guy like that, you've
- 4:00got to feel good about it. Yeah, and you know he practices a
- 4:05lot, he lives in the building, so you know, it just feels
- 4:12like there's a little justice in it. There's a there's a reward for a
- 4:16person that works as hard as he can for the program and uh, you
- 4:21know, works as hard as he can to be prepared for the moment,
- 4:25and you know it's it's you know, I think Donovan or excuse me,
- 4:30I think Andre Jackson and uh Adamasonogo really came into this program as young players
- 4:35and really set a tone for uh for for a Jim rat mentality, and
- 4:42uh, you know, alex Is can kind of continuing that type of mindset.
- 4:46How much Dan do you think you rub off on these guys? In
- 4:50that in that realm. I mean they have to do the work. Obviously,
- 4:54you have to direct what's going on. But I mean do they see
- 4:57you. Do the players see you in your work out? That can go
- 5:00cheef. We can't let him out work us. I mean you're out there
- 5:02playing with these guys sometimes and I see practice. Yeah. I think that's
- 5:08the difference between you know, college and pros is I you know, I
- 5:13don't want to I think the head coach in college is is, uh is
- 5:17really important. I think the staff in general is obviously really important, but
- 5:23uh, you know, the head coach is going to be the one that
- 5:25is going to attract the people and and set the tone and create the culture,
- 5:30and create the tactics that you're going to play by, and and the
- 5:34mindset of the team and the player development. Unlike pro sports, you know,
- 5:42which especially at the NBA level, I think that the NBA game is
- 5:45about the players. It's it's a it's a player driven league. And I
- 5:50think in college, uh, yeah, the players are younger, They're they're
- 5:54not they're not professionals yet, they're they're still developing. I think that college
- 6:00sports, if you get the right head coach into your organization, they could
- 6:06create an environment that could lead to success. Dan Hoolies with us A Ukon
- 6:11men's basketball coaches show quick thought on Manhattan. We're moving ahead now getting towards
- 6:15Kansas coming up and what happened with the un h we'll talk about that too
- 6:19again. Tristan Newton three triple doubles in his career here. There were only
- 6:26eleven total in the history of Yukon basketball. This guy's got three of them.
- 6:31So impressive what he does not only boarding, but you know, finding
- 6:35teammates and he can score when he needs to. I mean, big guard,
- 6:42tremendous rebounder, I think, one of the best rebounders you know.
- 6:46And I think, listen, Tristan last year critically important, you know,
- 6:51point guard, you know, on a team that dominated the tournament, and
- 6:57his performance in the National Chairchampionship Game, and I think, yeah, in
- 7:01his mind, and there's a feeling in you by time around Tristan where you
- 7:05know, it feels like he's undervalued and isn't given the look at the NBA
- 7:10level and doesn't get the accolades he deserves. And I think, you know,
- 7:15this year is going to be plenty of opportunities for him. I think
- 7:18he's off to a great start with what he did at the Garden, you
- 7:23know, and you know, if he believes he's an All American and he
- 7:26believes he's a draftable NBA player, he's got He's got a great opportunity.
- 7:30Just went to to prove that point, and he's in the perfect system to
- 7:35do it. Yeah. Tristan Newton MVP of that Empire Classic, three triple
- 7:41doubles more than anybody in the history of Yukon basketball. Dan Hurley Wather's The
- 7:45Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We move on and we'll be talking about n
