Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB Week 1 Postgame Show: Did The Eagles IMPRESS In Tight Win Over Commanders?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, welcome to the Inside the Birds postgame show. First
- 0:13Speaker 1: one of the 2022 season, I'm sorry, 2026 season. The
- 0:18Speaker 1: Eagles come out with a win. They just barely get by.
- 0:21Speaker 1: They beat the Washington Commanders 24 to 22. And Adam,
- 0:26Speaker 1: it takes a big two-point conversion stop there at the end.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I believe Mauro Jomo makes the big tackle. It turns
- 0:33Speaker 1: out to be the big play of the game, and
- 0:36Speaker 1: that's what gets the Eagles off to their 1-0 start.
- 0:38Speaker 1: So there's a lot to talk about between the new offense,
- 0:42Speaker 1: some of the leaky defense, and obviously special teams was
- 0:44Speaker 1: huge in this game in a variety of ways. What
- 0:47Speaker 1: are your initial thoughts of this game?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Well, it's a win. Barely a win, but they did win.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Nick Ciorani now 6-0 as the Eagles head coach in
- 0:58Speaker 2: season openers. It's called a survivor and advance game. They
- 1:02Speaker 2: didn't play well. I thought Devontae Smith said it very
- 1:04Speaker 2: well on offense. A lot of good, a lot of bad.
- 1:07Speaker 2: But they have to stop shooting themselves in the foot.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Stop getting behind the sticks is what he said. Well,
- 1:12Speaker 2: to that degree, I don't know how this is– I
- 1:15Speaker 2: don't know. I guessed at this, and I looked it up.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm right. I can't believe it. They had
- 1:19Speaker 2: the lowest amount of first downs in the National Football
- 1:21Speaker 2: League on Sunday. Ten.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Wow. Ten first downs.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I didn't even realize that. I knew it was bad.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I'm like, when is the last time they got a
- 1:30Speaker 2: first down? You know, watching. And they got ten.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Ten. I think the Bears had ten after their second drive. Oh,
- 1:38Speaker 1: my God. Oh, my God.
- 1:40Speaker 2: There were five games that had over 60 points on Sunday.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 1:44Speaker 2: But even the Titans had more. They played next week.
- 1:47Speaker 2: They had 11. But that's bad. That tells you a lot,
- 1:50Speaker 2: despite how many points they put up. it was really
- 1:54Speaker 2: misleading 24 points, but yeah, I mean, they did score
- 1:57Speaker 2: 14 in the first half, a couple of big plays,
- 1:59Speaker 2: but other than that, the running game was horrendous. One
- 2:03Speaker 2: big play, one big play. Then, then Barkley's 14 for 41.
- 2:07Speaker 2: That's not good. Like there, I, there's so much, I mean,
- 2:10Speaker 2: we could do two hours on this thing. We're so
- 2:11Speaker 2: much bad in the game, but they won. That's the key.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I mean, our job, we're not Eagles fans, folks. We
- 2:16Speaker 2: tell the truth here.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And I cannot wait till we do the inside of
- 2:19Speaker 2: the tape show with Greg Cosell. Um, They've got some
- 2:22Speaker 2: offensive line problems, which we'll get to once we get
- 2:24Speaker 2: through the tape. But there's certain things we could see.
- 2:28Speaker 2: But there were some encouraging signs. In the first half
- 2:31Speaker 2: with Dontavion Wicks, they isolated him and Mike Sanderstroll. Love
- 2:35Speaker 2: that Sean Mannion did that. That was a big problem
- 2:38Speaker 2: I had with Kevin Petullo. When Jalen was given enough time,
- 2:42Speaker 2: he delivered in the first half. The bomb was phenomenal.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Protection was phenomenal. Throw was great. And then the first
- 2:50Speaker 2: one to Goddard, That was a five-step drop. One and
- 2:55Speaker 2: a half, two hitches. Ball's out. Led Goddard. The ball
- 2:58Speaker 2: was out there. He was halfway through his route. Great throw.
- 3:00Speaker 2: That's encouraging. Now, was there a lot of slapiness? We're
- 3:03Speaker 2: going to have to learn, was it the lack of
- 3:05Speaker 2: receivers getting open? Was Jalen holding the ball too long?
- 3:07Speaker 2: You know, which has been the case for many years.
- 3:10Speaker 2: We don't know that yet. We're going to look at
- 3:11Speaker 2: the tape. We're going to find out. We're going to
- 3:12Speaker 2: get that answer. But then there was just so many
- 3:16Speaker 2: problems in the run game. Missed blocks. Pass protection. Barkley
- 3:21Speaker 2: had one where he stoned the guy. Then he got
- 3:23Speaker 2: blown up on one. He actually missed two blocks. That
- 3:26Speaker 2: was disappointing. Makai Lemon, I mean, I know they forced
- 3:31Speaker 2: him on the field. He's not ready. That's kind of
- 3:32Speaker 2: what we thought. But to be honest with you, he's
- 3:35Speaker 2: not a separator. That's his problem. That showed up in
- 3:38Speaker 2: the game. But you know what? That's a scheme thing.
- 3:40Speaker 2: You got to get him open. That's on Sean Mannion.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Got to get him open by formation. They did reduce receivers,
- 3:49Speaker 2: which is totally what I expected that came in. Wicks
- 3:51Speaker 2: is reduced. Lemon, of course, was. They ran your four
- 3:57Speaker 2: verts as you texted me. Of course, I knew that
- 3:59Speaker 2: was coming. We knew that. We put it through the
- 4:02Speaker 2: four verts.
- 4:03Speaker 1: That was Goddard's first touchdown, and he bent inside the
- 4:06Speaker 1: corner in the safety.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I saw one crosser that Jalen hit over the middle
- 4:09Speaker 2: in the first half. I'm looking at my notes here.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I'm looking at one check down, not enough. They need more.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I know Hurts scrambled. It seemed like they were all
- 4:19Speaker 2: scrambles with Wes, Greg, how these guys at NFL films
- 4:22Speaker 2: graded it. It didn't look like anything was designed. Could
- 4:26Speaker 2: be wrong. Maybe one was, but I didn't see that.
- 4:28Speaker 2: There are issues, but they did score enough to win.
- 4:33Speaker 2: They did score 24 points, but it didn't seem like
- 4:36Speaker 2: it based on the game looks, but you take it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I mean, but the thing is your coaches will tell
- 4:41Speaker 2: you that it's all about corrections. Even if they scored
- 4:44Speaker 2: 50 and play great, the fine stuff, the correct, There's
- 4:47Speaker 2: stuff they don't have to find. They're going to find it.
- 4:49Speaker 2: It's going to show up on tape. Overall, it's a
- 4:53Speaker 2: performance situation. We're only talking offense here. We'll talk defense
- 4:55Speaker 2: in a minute. You just feel like, okay, they left
- 4:57Speaker 2: a lot of meat on the bone. Devontae talked about it.
- 5:01Speaker 2: A lot of bad execution errors, a ton of them.
- 5:04Speaker 2: But you like that Wicks showed up. I know in
- 5:06Speaker 2: the second half he didn't do anything, but those are
- 5:07Speaker 2: two big plays. And it's the trust that Hurts has
- 5:11Speaker 2: with Wicks. We talked about it in training camp. Wicks
- 5:13Speaker 2: is seemingly almost always where he's supposed to be. by route,
- 5:17Speaker 2: by the route combination, and with the timing of the
- 5:19Speaker 2: passing game and the offense and the progression, it's really good. Now,
- 5:24Speaker 2: the issue that we have to bring up, as much
- 5:27Speaker 2: as a lot of fans hate A.J. Brown for what
- 5:29Speaker 2: happened last season and we won it out and all that,
- 5:32Speaker 2: it showed up today in this game not having A.J. Brown,
- 5:34Speaker 2: but it did show up.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Devontae needs help. Yeah, I thought he would get targeted
- 5:42Speaker 1: a whole lot more, but the passing game, as you're mentioning,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and for a variety of different reasons, just was not
- 5:47Speaker 1: like poetry in motion. We'll get to that in a minute.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I think that it's fair to have a 10,000 foot
- 5:53Speaker 1: view of this thing and say it's week one. So
- 5:55Speaker 1: you expect not everything is going to be perfect, especially
- 5:58Speaker 1: with the offense.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And it's a win against a division foe that played
- 6:05Speaker 1: all right. Not great. they made a couple of mistakes
- 6:08Speaker 1: that really hurt them, but they could have won the game. Okay.
- 6:10Speaker 1: So they played well enough to come into hostile territory
- 6:13Speaker 1: and almost steal the game there in the fourth quarter.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So you get that win, you get some wrinkles ironed out.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I think, and I talked to some guys in the
- 6:23Speaker 1: locker room after this on defense, certainly not having any
- 6:27Speaker 1: tape on what David Blau is yet. Just knowing where
- 6:29Speaker 1: he comes from was a little tricky for them on
- 6:31Speaker 1: some certain routes. And you saw Antonio Williams had a
- 6:33Speaker 1: really nice, nice game and Cooper Eugene struggled, but, So
- 6:37Speaker 1: you can take this 10,000-foot view and say it's truly
- 6:40Speaker 1: a cliche, but it is very true because you see
- 6:42Speaker 1: upsets all the time, and there were some in week one.
- 6:45Speaker 1: It's tough to win. So now they're 1-0. They've beaten
- 6:48Speaker 1: division opponent, and you're getting through your rough period of
- 6:53Speaker 1: finding yourself by getting victories. If you had lost this game,
- 6:55Speaker 1: imagine what we'd be saying because the difference between winning
- 6:58Speaker 1: and losing this game was honestly Jalen Carter blocking a PAT,
- 7:04Speaker 1: a very questionable– penalty called on Stefan Diggs for a
- 7:08Speaker 1: celebration that made them not be able to.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Go for it. You can't do that. That's it.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I didn't think it was the goalpost.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You can't do that.
- 7:17Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like I don't know what
- 7:19Speaker 1: it is and isn't anymore. Cause I saw some stuff
- 7:21Speaker 1: going on earlier in the day. That was what I
- 7:23Speaker 1: thought was excessive, but I was fine with that.
- 7:25Speaker 2: That's that was put in years ago because they weren't
- 7:28Speaker 2: calling it. And a bunch of players are doing this.
- 7:30Speaker 2: It's enough for taking it out.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Right. Yeah. Okay, so take the questionable out of it.
- 7:34Speaker 1: The fact that it happened, it made them not be
- 7:36Speaker 1: able to go for the two-point conversion there when they
- 7:39Speaker 1: had a lot of momentum going on.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yeah, no.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And when you're talking about your punter being your MVP again,
- 7:47Speaker 1: it's not where you want to be. So, yes, there
- 7:50Speaker 1: are all the positives that I mentioned that you can
- 7:52Speaker 1: take from this. And by the way, Zach Vaughn played
- 7:55Speaker 1: like a man-possessed.
- 7:55Speaker 2: He's unreal, man.
- 7:57Speaker 1: He was unbelievable. I don't know if they win without
- 7:59Speaker 1: him because he made about seven– important stops, whether third
- 8:02Speaker 1: downs or pass breakups altogether. He was incredible.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:06Speaker 1: But if you want to be, if you want to
- 8:08Speaker 1: look at it and say, Hey, I was really looking
- 8:11Speaker 1: forward to seeing some development from last year, especially offensive.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I was really looking forward to interior offensive line health
- 8:19Speaker 1: being a good thing and getting the run game going.
- 8:22Speaker 1: And then that in turn, marrying a good pass game.
- 8:25Speaker 1: You didn't, what you saw was basically the same, Run, run,
- 8:29Speaker 1: run into brick wall offense and then pop a few
- 8:31Speaker 1: big pass plays or a few big Jalen Hurts runs.
- 8:33Speaker 1: That's Eagles from the past. You did not see what
- 8:37Speaker 1: you were hoping to see. But again, it's week one.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I know they got to work on it, but you
- 8:40Speaker 1: were at least hoping to see a step in that
- 8:42Speaker 1: direction and you didn't. And that part, probably won't make
- 8:47Speaker 1: people feel good until maybe week three or week four.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Cause they may be to Titans this way next week also,
- 8:52Speaker 1: but people want to see that the offense is for
- 8:55Speaker 1: real and that the changes that they make will work.
- 8:58Speaker 1: But I don't think they could see that yet. And
- 8:59Speaker 1: it really does. I worry about the offensive line. Oh,
- 9:03Speaker 1: Landon Dickerson in particular.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Dickerson boy, he fell down. He just didn't look right. Um,
- 9:10Speaker 2: we'll see what the tape looks like. Looking forward to
- 9:12Speaker 2: watching that and talking to Greg, who's so about it. Um,
- 9:16Speaker 2: The run blocking was poor. I was very surprised. They
- 9:19Speaker 2: had one great run by Barkley. Barkley also made it
- 9:22Speaker 2: some yards on the 14 for 41. Trust me, it
- 9:25Speaker 2: looked like 14 for 25. It's just he had trouble
- 9:28Speaker 2: getting out of the zone way. What they did is,
- 9:32Speaker 2: because they didn't respect the Eagles receivers, I'm just telling
- 9:35Speaker 2: you what it looked very clear to me. They loaded
- 9:38Speaker 2: up that box.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 9:40Speaker 2: They loaded it up, and I noticed it early game.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I'm looking at my notes here. No A.J. Brown showing up,
- 9:45Speaker 2: showing up, showing up because you're not worried about anyone.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I know Wicks, he made two big plays. No question.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I would throw in, I think it was a lot.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I agree with you. They were not afraid of Eagles receivers.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Not at all.
- 9:56Speaker 1: And they they believe that they could either a overpower
- 10:00Speaker 1: the interior of that offensive line or B or B,
- 10:04Speaker 1: which also happened, break down protection schemes to get some
- 10:08Speaker 1: free rides, which they also got. So they showed a
- 10:12Speaker 1: lack of respect. You could say the same way for,
- 10:14Speaker 1: Chris Cooper's ability to have the answers in the middle
- 10:17Speaker 1: of a game, especially in the second half. Sonny Stiles,
- 10:19Speaker 1: you mentioned he started coming. Lou Vu goes out with
- 10:22Speaker 1: a groin injury. You think everything's good, but no. They
- 10:24Speaker 1: just play five or six guys at the line of scrimmage.
- 10:27Speaker 1: They drop some. They send some. That really forced a
- 10:30Speaker 1: lot of rushed and hurried plays from the offense and
- 10:33Speaker 1: from Jalen Hurts. Football is finally back, and PrizePix is

- 12:18Speaker 1: Prize picks run your game. Hey, I'm somebody who likes
- 12:21Speaker 1: to work out. I get to the gym at least
- 12:23Speaker 1: three times a week. I try to focus on certain
- 12:25Speaker 1: muscle groups, my arms, my legs. And it used to
- 12:28Speaker 1: be really frustrating for me to find jeans that fit
- 12:31Speaker 1: someone like myself who likes to work out. Sometimes those
- 12:34Speaker 1: jeans can be awkward and tight and you're sitting in
- 12:37Speaker 1: a chair and you're constantly pulling it. your jeans trying
- 12:40Speaker 1: to get them to fit you. Sometimes it feels like
- 12:42Speaker 1: you have to buy jeans that make you choose between
- 12:45Speaker 1: your waist or your thighs. But thankfully, I found the
- 12:49Speaker 1: perfect jean. It's different from all other jean companies, especially
- 12:53Speaker 1: for guys with athletic builds. They actually let me move
- 12:56Speaker 1: like a normal human being. I can bend down and
- 12:58Speaker 1: tie my shoes. I can squat to pick up something
- 13:01Speaker 1: without feeling restricted. I can actually do a full squat,
- 13:04Speaker 1: you know, bending down to pick something up. without feeling
- 13:07Speaker 1: like I'm about to blow a scene. You know, the
- 13:09Speaker 1: old standard jean sizing, it wasn't designed to fit guys
- 13:12Speaker 1: who squat or deadlift, play sports, or just do anything
- 13:15Speaker 1: that actually builds your legs, but the Perfect Jeans is
- 13:18Speaker 1: designed for just that, for guys like me. Perfect Jeans
- 13:22Speaker 1: has six fits. It includes the athletic fit, the slim,
- 13:25Speaker 1: the thick, and the thick thick, specifically built around the
- 13:27Speaker 1: reality that legs and waist don't always scale together. Right now,
- 13:31Speaker 1: our listeners get 15% off their first order plus free

- 13:44Speaker 1: That's 15% off first order plus free shipping at the
- 13:47Speaker 1: perfect gene dot NYC, or just Google the perfect gene
- 13:50Speaker 1: and use code birds 15 for 15% off.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Yeah, really not much to add. I mean, it just, uh,
- 13:56Speaker 2: they crowded the box. Um, Communication at certain times was
- 14:00Speaker 2: not great. It was tough to watch, to be honest
- 14:04Speaker 2: with you.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Because they didn't play in the preseason. We saw them
- 14:09Speaker 2: against New England in the joint practice. Andrew and I
- 14:11Speaker 2: were there, and we liked what we saw. Again, it's
- 14:13Speaker 2: not a real game, but it's physical contact from another team.
- 14:17Speaker 2: It's not my first game, but remember what we said
- 14:19Speaker 2: in the pregame show. Washington has completely revamped their offensive line.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Excuse me, defensive line. They changed the scheme totally, and
- 14:25Speaker 2: they've added so much talent in the front seven. But
- 14:27Speaker 2: their front seven was terrible last season. Oldest defense in
- 14:29Speaker 2: the National Football League. That's no longer the case. They
- 14:32Speaker 2: still have some older players that are still under contract,
- 14:34Speaker 2: so they couldn't get rid of them. But they look fresh.
- 14:38Speaker 2: They did a good job. What Washington has a problem with,
- 14:43Speaker 2: we talked about this pregame. Mike Sanders is still really
- 14:46Speaker 2: not a corner.
- 14:46Speaker 1: He's a nickel.
- 14:47Speaker 2: He was phenomenal two years ago. Struggled a bit playing
- 14:50Speaker 2: corner last season. Struggled a bit. The Eagles went after
- 14:53Speaker 2: Russell Douglas a little bit. He got them. They got him. Um,
- 14:57Speaker 2: but I say all this, it's only game one. Yep.
- 15:00Speaker 2: They're going to make a lot of corrections. They're playing
- 15:02Speaker 2: Tennessee who was looked awful. Tennessee didn't have any injuries
- 15:05Speaker 2: in the game. I, I got the transcript. So I
- 15:07Speaker 2: got an early word. They didn't have anything, but they
- 15:08Speaker 2: were terrible against the jets. They're a bad team. Eagle
- 15:12Speaker 2: should not struggle. Sirianni, Sterkley's really good on the road.
- 15:15Speaker 2: So you feel good about that. And we'll get the
- 15:16Speaker 2: defense at a second, finish up offense, but they have
- 15:19Speaker 2: a lot to correct. They should feel fortunate. They scored 24.
- 15:21Speaker 2: They did. Okay. It's a fact, but as you said,
- 15:24Speaker 2: brain and man can't be the all-star. I mean, 10
- 15:27Speaker 2: first downs is unbelievably embarrassing. I agree.
- 15:32Speaker 1: He's great, but he can't be your best player at times.
- 15:37Speaker 1: What did you think of the Goddard touchdown that won
- 15:40Speaker 1: the game for the U of the 42 yarder? I
- 15:42Speaker 1: thought he might not be completely set because I've watched
- 15:47Speaker 1: it slowly. He kind of does this hop and his
- 15:50Speaker 1: right leg is still in the air as the ball
- 15:52Speaker 1: is being snapped. So it looked like, and that also
- 15:54Speaker 1: looked like my a lot of, kind of flinched back.
- 15:56Speaker 1: So I feel like they got away with one, but hey,
- 15:58Speaker 1: it wasn't called. So maybe that was a creative way
- 16:01Speaker 1: of Sean Mannion. Just, I don't know what kind of,
- 16:03Speaker 1: that's not burst motion. That's like hop motion, right?
- 16:05Speaker 2: No, it wasn't. But I, I wonder if they have
- 16:09Speaker 2: a pool report asking the ref if, if there was that,
- 16:12Speaker 2: because usually there's going to be a pool report anyway. Yeah.
- 16:16Speaker 2: There's gotta be something they could, they could ask him about.
- 16:18Speaker 2: That's a play I would ask about just to get clarification,
- 16:20Speaker 2: but I found it interesting. I don't, maybe the folks
- 16:22Speaker 2: who are looking at YouTube, Maybe you guys heard it,
- 16:25Speaker 2: but I don't remember them going to Mike Pereira for Fox. Yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Because Kevin Burkhart and Brady, they went over the play,
- 16:33Speaker 2: but they didn't say that he wasn't set. So I'm like, okay.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Because usually you know. Usually it's obvious. It was questionable,
- 16:42Speaker 2: but they would usually go to Mike Pereira. They didn't, surprisingly. Yeah.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Yeah, well, the edge– I think it was O.A. It
- 16:48Speaker 1: was one of the edge defenders for Washington was pointing
- 16:51Speaker 1: as soon as it happened and stopped running. And that's
- 16:53Speaker 1: his fault. You got to play until you hear a whistle, right?
- 16:56Speaker 1: But they stopped. And everybody in the press box, just
- 16:59Speaker 1: to give people an idea what it was like, it
- 17:00Speaker 1: was a very objective place, no cheering, no nothing. There's
- 17:03Speaker 1: Commander's media. There's Eagle's media. As soon as that ball
- 17:06Speaker 1: got snapped, there was noise. Everybody made a noise like, huh?
- 17:09Speaker 1: Because it looked not set. Like it didn't look right.
- 17:14Speaker 1: So– We'll talk to Greg about it. We'll break it down.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I'll be able to have some footage of it. But
- 17:19Speaker 1: it becomes controversial because if they don't score there, I mean,
- 17:22Speaker 1: who knows?
- 17:23Speaker 2: I'd like to get clarification. By the way, usually the
- 17:27Speaker 2: opposing team has some of their personnel staff in the
- 17:31Speaker 2: press box.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And I remember, this is really funny, so the 2010
- 17:36Speaker 2: game in Washington when our friend Clay Harbor had the
- 17:39Speaker 2: block for Vic on the bomb to D-Jack. Mm-hmm. I
- 17:45Speaker 2: think it was 2010. It, it was insane because the
- 17:51Speaker 2: Eagles had some of the personnel staff in there. And,
- 17:53Speaker 2: and of course, you know, they have to be careful.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Like they're like this, this, but they're not saying anything.
- 17:58Speaker 2: It was really funny.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Cause they know they can't do it.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Can't share the press box.
- 18:01Speaker 1: There you go.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 18:03Speaker 1: All right. So that's, that's pretty much, I mean, I don't, again, we'll,
- 18:07Speaker 1: we're really going to go through it on inside the tape.
- 18:09Speaker 1: We're going to go sell this week, but I counted myself.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Cause I was, Hey, I'm in the press box. I
- 18:13Speaker 1: have a really good view here. where I sit, of
- 18:16Speaker 1: when the Eagles are going from the north end zone
- 18:19Speaker 1: to the south end zone. Or vice versa, actually. And
- 18:23Speaker 1: there were a lot of times locked in on the
- 18:26Speaker 1: run game. And Landon Dickerson, to me, looked like he
- 18:30Speaker 1: was either immobile or could not put his hands up
- 18:33Speaker 1: in time. I want to go back to one thing
- 18:35Speaker 1: I told you. I was at the last practice. Before
- 18:40Speaker 1: the preseason game. The last practice, everybody, it was a
- 18:43Speaker 1: light practice, but all the first-teamers, Mekhi Lemon was practicing.
- 18:46Speaker 1: They were subbing out Dickerson occasionally and subbing in Drew Kendall.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And I've already taken a look at a couple of,
- 18:54Speaker 1: because you can see you don't need all 22 to
- 18:56Speaker 1: see offensive line play. I've already taken a look at
- 18:58Speaker 1: a few of the pressures that commanders have gotten. And
- 19:01Speaker 1: there are times where Landon is just, it's almost like
- 19:05Speaker 1: he's not competing anymore. The sack on Hurts, it almost
- 19:10Speaker 1: looked like a stunt on the left side where he
- 19:12Speaker 1: just lets Luvu get right past him and then Luvu
- 19:16Speaker 1: bull rushes Mailata and just drops Hurts. There was like
- 19:20Speaker 1: four or five, there were a couple of run blitzes
- 19:21Speaker 1: where they just come right at him. And it's sad
- 19:25Speaker 1: because he's a great guy and he's a three-time Pro
- 19:26Speaker 1: Bowler and he went and had all these surgeries, which
- 19:28Speaker 1: is unfortunate. But I don't want to overreact to week one,
- 19:32Speaker 1: but if that's what you're getting going forward, he might
- 19:36Speaker 1: not be able to play.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Oh, I mean, it's only day one and it's week one,
- 19:40Speaker 2: but if we're talking, if we keep saying this for
- 19:42Speaker 2: six weeks, that's when you've got to start talking about
- 19:44Speaker 2: getting Drew Kendall ready.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Who theoretically would be his replacement. Yeah, I don't think
- 19:49Speaker 2: it would be Willie Lampkin.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And by the way, everybody on the line, even Lane
- 19:55Speaker 1: had a few... I mean, it was... And that's where
- 19:58Speaker 1: I put it on Cooper being his first year and
- 20:00Speaker 1: Mannion first year. These guys have to get together and
- 20:03Speaker 1: figure things out in the game, especially we talked about
- 20:06Speaker 1: this in the pregame. You're facing a Brian Flores disciple defense.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know they're going to put six and seven guys,
- 20:12Speaker 1: and it could be any six or seven guys, on
- 20:13Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage. They're going to make it seem
- 20:15Speaker 1: like they're all coming. They're going to drop two, drop three,
- 20:18Speaker 1: rush six sometimes. And they did that. And I thought
- 20:20Speaker 1: Durante was really calling a good game once it got
- 20:23Speaker 1: to the third quarter. early fourth before that Goddard touchdown
- 20:26Speaker 1: kind of broke the back a little bit. He was,
- 20:28Speaker 1: he had, he had the offense confused and hurts bailed
- 20:31Speaker 1: them out with some, some important runs. But again, you
- 20:34Speaker 1: were looking for more in the rhythm and timing passing game.
- 20:36Speaker 1: And it's not there yet.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Not there.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I mean, but which is hard to be when you're
- 20:40Speaker 1: behind the sticks though. I got, I can't put it
- 20:42Speaker 1: all on the offense. Yeah.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I it's, it's hard to pick cause we don't have
- 20:46Speaker 2: access to the tape. So I'm just trying to, cause
- 20:49Speaker 2: I'd like to know if there were some, cause there
- 20:51Speaker 2: were some plays where just hurts us, Rolled out and
- 20:54Speaker 2: just threw it out of bounds and whatever. You saw
- 20:56Speaker 2: him go to the sideline. Because we've seen this in
- 20:59Speaker 2: the past when we point out this ball should have
- 21:00Speaker 2: been out. The guy was open. Within the progression, the
- 21:03Speaker 2: guy was opening to throw it. But don't know that yet. Yeah.
- 21:06Speaker 2: So we're going to learn. Actually, we're taping tomorrow, so
- 21:09Speaker 2: I can't wait. Before we move to defense, here's the thing.
- 21:15Speaker 2: They scored 24. Yeah. They should not be happy with
- 21:17Speaker 2: the way that their offense performed. Really. But here's the
- 21:20Speaker 2: great thing. They didn't turn it over. Jalen had three
- 21:21Speaker 2: touchdown passes. Like right now for the, for the Hertz haters,
- 21:28Speaker 2: he didn't turn it over too bad. He didn't turn
- 21:30Speaker 2: it over and he had three touchdown passes. So, and,
- 21:34Speaker 2: and two of them were terrific. I mean, they're great throws.
- 21:36Speaker 2: The first got our touchdown. And the, obviously the one
- 21:40Speaker 2: to Wix was, it was, I mean, that, I mean, that,
- 21:43Speaker 2: that was now that was great protection, but he delivered.
- 21:45Speaker 2: He is as Durante Jones said in his transcript before
- 21:49Speaker 2: the game, And it got him. He said he's one
- 21:53Speaker 2: of the best deep passers I've been against. Yep.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Oh, the ball to Devontae Smith was so beautiful. Yeah,
- 21:58Speaker 1: that was another one.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And, okay, I really do want to address this. I
- 22:03Speaker 1: think Nick Sirianni, you know, game management, decision-making, he hurried
- 22:07Speaker 1: to the line of scrimmage right after that catch, and
- 22:09Speaker 1: they ran a play immediately, and it was a terrible play,
- 22:12Speaker 1: and it put him behind the sticks, and they wound
- 22:13Speaker 1: up settling for a field goal. From my vantage point,
- 22:16Speaker 1: and I had– I had the action coming right to me.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I don't think there was a question that he was inbounds.
- 22:21Speaker 1: He caught it. He dragged his feet. He was worried,
- 22:24Speaker 1: I guess, that the commanders were going to review it.
- 22:26Speaker 1: And he got some to the line of scrimmage and
- 22:27Speaker 1: they ran a play and the Hurts winds up throwing
- 22:30Speaker 1: it away. And now they're second and 10. I didn't
- 22:31Speaker 1: think that was necessary.
- 22:33Speaker 2: By the way, great adjustment by Wicks on his nine-yard touchdown.
- 22:36Speaker 2: That was a really nice job because Taylor still lost
- 22:39Speaker 2: where he was. He made a couple beautiful moves on that.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I thought Wicks put a double move when he didn't
- 22:44Speaker 1: need to. He already had him beat on the initial cut,
- 22:46Speaker 1: and then he did another double move. He had it.
- 22:49Speaker 2: He left him in his bag, man. That was beautiful. And, again,
- 22:52Speaker 2: the bomb that they caught set things up. It was great.
- 22:55Speaker 2: But the fact that we sang all this, the only
- 22:58Speaker 2: 10 first downs, that's embarrassing. Right. But again, they're going
- 23:01Speaker 2: to make corrections, and we're going to see. Like you said,
- 23:05Speaker 2: it set this up very well. They won the game.
- 23:09Speaker 2: That's the thing. But defensively, they did a lot of good. Yes,
- 23:13Speaker 2: they got tired. Clearly, we have to check the snap counts. Yes,
- 23:17Speaker 2: they could. Daniels was Houdini with his legs. It was incredible.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Their pressure rate was good, but they just didn't wrap up.
- 23:25Speaker 2: This is where Vic, they're going to go over this,
- 23:28Speaker 2: Clint Hurt and Vic. In particular, fans who are going
- 23:31Speaker 2: to go over this, they have to do a better
- 23:33Speaker 2: job against scrambling quarterbacks. This is ridiculous. Daniels was... I
- 23:38Speaker 2: thought it was like Fran Tarkenton out there. I was like,
- 23:40Speaker 2: oh my goodness. Fran Tarkenton, for those of you who
- 23:43Speaker 2: are under 40, who's in the Hall of Fame, one
- 23:45Speaker 2: of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, one of the
- 23:47Speaker 2: best scramblers I've ever... I was young enough to... I
- 23:50Speaker 2: was old enough to remember him when I was a
- 23:52Speaker 2: very young kid, but I remember him just running around
- 23:55Speaker 2: and dodging defenders. It was just amazing. Their defense... Their
- 24:00Speaker 2: run defense wasn't great. Krosky Merritt had some good runs.
- 24:03Speaker 2: I'm looking at my notes here. David Blau, this is
- 24:10Speaker 2: where I think he struggled. First run, 11 yards, then
- 24:15Speaker 2: he pulls and puts in Rashad White. Why would you
- 24:17Speaker 2: do that? Rashad White, he slows everything down. He clogs
- 24:20Speaker 2: it up. He's a good pass protector. Okay, I get that.
- 24:24Speaker 2: He's good at shooting. Ironically, Krosky Merritt had the touchdown. Actually,
- 24:27Speaker 2: a good power run for him. He's not that powerful.
- 24:30Speaker 2: That was his bad. Krosky may not be powerful, but
- 24:34Speaker 2: he was slithery. I mean, he got through. Yep. And
- 24:37Speaker 2: then Katron Allen came in for, wait, they had enough
- 24:39Speaker 2: of Rashad White, so they put Katron Allen in. So
- 24:41Speaker 2: that was interesting. But the game should not have been
- 24:43Speaker 2: as close as it was. And the defense, although Kunyan
- 24:47Speaker 2: obviously put Terry McLaurin on the sidelines, that was unbelievable,
- 24:50Speaker 2: pretty much. Yep. I did not hear from him. Not surprising, though.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Not surprising to me. I didn't. They talked about it.
- 24:57Speaker 2: This is the first time he's been pulled maybe since
- 24:59Speaker 2: high school or if at all. But we don't know
- 25:01Speaker 2: if he was cramping. I don't know. I don't know
- 25:03Speaker 2: what happened. But I do know is they completely shut
- 25:05Speaker 2: him down. Yep. Two for 14. It was just unbelievable.
- 25:09Speaker 2: And obviously, Rick Wolin, they did an excellent job. Now,
- 25:15Speaker 2: Antonio Williams is a slot receiver by trade. Made a
- 25:18Speaker 2: couple of huge plays. I give the kid credit. Very quiet.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Then all of a sudden, he became a major factor.
- 25:22Speaker 2: The touchdown catch.
- 25:23Speaker 1: For sure.
- 25:24Speaker 2: The explanation from Dean Blandino was interesting. I get it
- 25:30Speaker 2: because his hands were on the ball. The ball's allowed
- 25:33Speaker 2: to touch the ground. It's got to be simultaneous.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Right. It never moved in his hand. He had his
- 25:37Speaker 1: fingers on it.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Unbelievable.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I thought that there would have been no reason to
- 25:40Speaker 1: overturn because not enough evidence. His hands were on the ball.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Yep.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Right. Underneath it, too.
- 25:45Speaker 2: What you just said is what Kevin Burkhardt said. There's
- 25:47Speaker 2: just not enough. At first glance, I'm like, there's no
- 25:49Speaker 2: way that's a catch. And then I saw the replay.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I'm like, wait a minute. His hands were on the ball,
- 25:53Speaker 2: on the ground. It was simultaneous and he didn't move.
- 25:56Speaker 2: I don't know how the hell he did it.
- 25:58Speaker 1: As I've gotten older, I've really tried to concentrate on
- 26:01Speaker 1: my physical health, my body, making sure I'm putting the
- 26:04Speaker 1: right things in and the healthiest things in. I've always
- 26:07Speaker 1: heard about creatine, but I wasn't really sure about using
- 26:10Speaker 1: creatine supplements until I did the research to find out
- 26:13Speaker 1: what it was really all about. That's when I found Momentus,
- 26:17Speaker 1: which created Signature Spec Creatine, their most advanced creatine ever,
- 26:22Speaker 1: setting a new standard for creatine quality. It's one of
- 26:26Speaker 1: the only creatines to be manufactured in a pharmaceutical facility

- 26:51Speaker 1: and be smooth. The benefits of creatine are very real.
- 26:54Speaker 1: It supports strength, power, lean muscle growth, recovery, and even
- 26:58Speaker 1: improve cognitive performance. And as I get older, all of
- 27:01Speaker 1: those things are so much more important to me than

- 29:05Speaker 2: Are you concerned with the lack of sacks? I'm not
- 29:08Speaker 2: a big– I appreciate it's very important to coaches, but
- 29:11Speaker 2: what are your thoughts on that?
- 29:12Speaker 1: I mean, yes and no. Not overly because I thought
- 29:16Speaker 1: there were a lot of– I thought Jayden Daniels was
- 29:18Speaker 1: on the run quite a bit, and he's a hard
- 29:20Speaker 1: guy to sack. But to your point, there were about
- 29:23Speaker 1: three or four plays, including one to the rookie, Williams,
- 29:28Speaker 1: on third and 14. He catches a 15-yard pass where
- 29:31Speaker 1: the four-man rush did not get home. And it's not
- 29:34Speaker 1: like they were on the field for a really long
- 29:36Speaker 1: time and Washington was running a lot of plays there
- 29:38Speaker 1: were times where I did feel like the four-man rush
- 29:43Speaker 1: didn't get home enough. I think they missed Jonathan Grenard, obviously.
- 29:48Speaker 1: There were times, and I spoke to Cooper DeGene after
- 29:51Speaker 1: the game, he was hard on himself. He felt like
- 29:53Speaker 1: he did not play a good game, and he didn't.
- 29:55Speaker 1: He had two bad penalties, legal contact penalties, and he
- 29:57Speaker 1: gave up, I think, He gave up the touchdown, right,
- 30:00Speaker 1: to Williams. He gave up the first catch that Williams
- 30:04Speaker 1: made was that 14-yarder right down to the goal line
- 30:07Speaker 1: where then they scored on the weird Merritt touchdown right
- 30:10Speaker 1: after that. But that was against Cooper to Gene also.
- 30:13Speaker 1: And then there was a third play against Koop that
- 30:16Speaker 1: they got three yards. So they were kind of targeting him,
- 30:18Speaker 1: went after him, and they got it. And that's not–
- 30:20Speaker 1: if you're the top nickelback in the league, you can't
- 30:22Speaker 1: let that happen. But it didn't help that he didn't
- 30:25Speaker 1: have a consistent, persistent pass rush.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Their defense was, by the way, the defense, I believe,
- 30:30Speaker 2: was on the field for over 20 minutes in the
- 30:32Speaker 2: second half. That's not good. No, yeah. Yeah, they were
- 30:38Speaker 2: getting gas. They were getting a little bit out of gas.
- 30:40Speaker 2: And I'm very interested to see what the snap counts.
- 30:42Speaker 2: I want to see what their rotation looked like in
- 30:44Speaker 2: terms of snaps. And Vic did say, and you know this,
- 30:48Speaker 2: you were at the game, it was humid as hell
- 30:49Speaker 2: all of a sudden. Very. In the afternoon. Really humid.
- 30:53Speaker 2: So that's a concern. It was in the 80s, and
- 30:55Speaker 2: the rain stopped late morning, early afternoon. But overall, the defense,
- 30:59Speaker 2: I'd say this, got some run fit issues, which they
- 31:03Speaker 2: got to clean up. It wasn't like they were bad
- 31:04Speaker 2: against the run, but they should have been better. They
- 31:05Speaker 2: should not have struggled. I turn out to be wrong.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I thought their defensive line would absolutely kill Washington.
- 31:13Speaker 1: See, I'm not sure if that's like one of those
- 31:15Speaker 1: things where you're concerned or you just say, hey, you
- 31:18Speaker 1: tip your cat. Washington's offensive line played better than given
- 31:22Speaker 1: credit for.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 31:23Speaker 1: They certainly did.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Brandon Coleman gave up so much pressure. But Daniels negated
- 31:27Speaker 2: it by, by scrambling, but there were times when he
- 31:30Speaker 2: had too much time and, and Brady brought it, kept,
- 31:34Speaker 2: you know, he kept pointing it out. Look, they're only
- 31:36Speaker 2: for rushers only for Vic does not want to blitz.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 31:40Speaker 2: I get it. I mean, I, you know, Greg Cosell
- 31:42Speaker 2: said on a pregame show, Greg had that study and
- 31:46Speaker 2: he goes, it's just basically it's four man pressure. It's
- 31:50Speaker 2: two deep safeties. They're not giving up big plays. They're
- 31:52Speaker 2: not giving up plays downfield. Linebackers have to cover. Now,
- 31:55Speaker 2: Zach Bond was a man. He was an absolute man.
- 31:58Speaker 2: For anyone saying that Trott's going to take his job,
- 32:00Speaker 2: I'd like to plant it on you. We love Trott.
- 32:02Speaker 2: He's been a great story as a third linebacker. Campbell,
- 32:06Speaker 2: by the way, had the sack. He lined up as
- 32:07Speaker 2: an edge rusher on that play. I definitely was able
- 32:09Speaker 2: to slow that down several times.
- 32:11Speaker 1: By the way, he didn't realize he had a sack.
- 32:12Speaker 1: We told him. We were asking him about the sack,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and me and a couple of reporters were talking to
- 32:17Speaker 1: Campbell after the game.
- 32:18Speaker 2: How did he not know that?
- 32:19Speaker 1: He's like, I got a sack? I don't think he
- 32:23Speaker 1: realized that Daniels was actually behind the line of scrimmage.
- 32:26Speaker 1: He was chasing him around all day. He had no idea.
- 32:29Speaker 2: It's funny because I was like, don't tell me they're
- 32:30Speaker 2: going to get a zero sack when he gets to
- 32:32Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage. It's credit for a sack, but
- 32:34Speaker 2: it's really not. But they got him about a yard
- 32:35Speaker 2: and a half behind. So don't make those corrections. They
- 32:39Speaker 2: have a very good chance to go 2-0. I expect
- 32:43Speaker 2: the Eagle fans to travel well to Nashville, go to Broadway,
- 32:45Speaker 2: Willow Broadway. Great place to get some food. But it
- 32:50Speaker 2: Like you said, they won. Defense is going to be good.
- 32:53Speaker 2: The cornerbacks were elite in this game. Cooper, as you said,
- 32:57Speaker 2: has got to be better. Bond, really good. D-line got
- 33:01Speaker 2: some pressure, no question about it. But I feel– and
- 33:05Speaker 2: we'll ask Greg this when we tape the show. Did
- 33:07Speaker 2: they look gassed? Sometimes he can't tell. Sometimes he can tell.
- 33:12Speaker 2: It's going to be on the process of finding out
- 33:15Speaker 2: what the heck happened through the tape.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, very much. So, yeah, corrections. I mean, overall,
- 33:20Speaker 1: good job. I mean, they made the big play on
- 33:22Speaker 1: the two-point conversion, or else who knows how that game
- 33:26Speaker 1: goes because they were running out of gas. I mean,
- 33:28Speaker 1: I think the defense is fine, but it's got to
- 33:31Speaker 1: pick it up a little bit. Dejean has to play better.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Baum was an animal. And then, again, once they get
- 33:36Speaker 1: Grenard back, then we can truly see if this pass
- 33:38Speaker 1: rush gets more consistent.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Did you notice, because they kept showing Jordan Davis on
- 33:44Speaker 2: the sidelines, but I couldn't tell. I don't know how
- 33:47Speaker 2: many snaps he had. Did you notice him out of
- 33:49Speaker 2: the game at all?
- 33:50Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I mean, he came out at times in
- 33:53Speaker 1: the pass rush, sure.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, which he usually does. I mean, last year
- 33:56Speaker 2: he was a little bit, and he was in nickel
- 33:58Speaker 2: way more than he'd ever been in his career.
- 34:00Speaker 1: And he might have in this game, too. Yeah, but
- 34:02Speaker 1: he's not always in nickel.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Because of the heat, because of the humidity, it was
- 34:06Speaker 2: really bad. And I was like, wow, this is going
- 34:08Speaker 2: to be interesting to see what Vic does. I cannot
- 34:09Speaker 2: wait to see the snap counts because I want to see.
- 34:12Speaker 2: Because he said he needed it because the media smartly
- 34:14Speaker 2: asked him about that. And he said, yeah– We probably
- 34:18Speaker 2: need to do it. Well, he doesn't like to do it.
- 34:19Speaker 2: He hates to do it. He doesn't like rotating at all.
- 34:22Speaker 2: But overall, they won. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. Now,
- 34:28Speaker 2: it's funny. It went over the total. It was a
- 34:30Speaker 2: lot of points.
- 34:30Speaker 1: I know. I know. I should have been Mr.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Over.
- 34:32Speaker 1: I would say it was like I expected because I'm
- 34:35Speaker 1: the one who always says these games are weird. And then,
- 34:38Speaker 1: you know, people like me on YouTube. They say I
- 34:39Speaker 1: like Washington too much. Well, guess what? They could have
- 34:43Speaker 1: won that game. People think I like Washington too much.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny. But they spelled your name right. Congrats.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Very funny. They did not. All good, man.
- 34:55Speaker 2: We'll do it up for the show. Oh, real quick.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Real quick.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Vince Papali's show, folks. You have to hear it. We
- 35:01Speaker 2: did a great special show. Vince is a friend of ours.
- 35:04Speaker 2: And all the interviews we've done in nine years, this
- 35:07Speaker 2: is our ninth season. If it's not my favorite, it's
- 35:09Speaker 2: right up there.
- 35:10Speaker 1: It was.
- 35:11Speaker 2: phenomenal on the storytelling. I mean, we did this interview
- 35:14Speaker 2: in like 25. I swear he told 50 stories.
- 35:16Speaker 1: It's crazy. Oh, I'm sure.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it was phenomenal. So it's up there if you
- 35:20Speaker 2: want to, because if you're probably listening to other 18
- 35:22Speaker 2: shows last week, that's one that we're, that'll be is
- 35:25Speaker 2: up on audio and YouTube. You'll definitely want to hear it.
- 35:28Speaker 1: And we'll get a lot more shows this week. We'll
- 35:30Speaker 1: have the debut of inside the tape, offense and defense.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Excited about that birds weekly with Gunner and Barrett Brooks
- 35:36Speaker 1: will be a special guest. So excited about that. That'll
- 35:39Speaker 1: be part of our, programming inside the data. Sam Fink
- 35:42Speaker 1: will have this thing broken down in terms of EPA
- 35:45Speaker 1: and DVOA, all those fun stats that you and I
- 35:48Speaker 1: don't really get a chance to get into immediately after
- 35:50Speaker 1: in the post-game.
- 35:50Speaker 2: DVOA is huge. Every coach that I know swears by it.
- 35:56Speaker 2: They'll poke holes in a lot of data, which I
- 35:59Speaker 2: think is not quite like Vic does, calls it fake.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Fake PFF stat.
- 36:05Speaker 2: No, but they all swear by DVOA because it's one
- 36:07Speaker 2: thing you can't shoot holes through.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
