Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI SCROLL: Brat x Kamala Harris fan edits, TrishCrave is the new PopCrave + Poppi Cosmetics allegedly "ghosts" intern
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:09through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19Thank you guys so much for all of your love and listens on Let
- 0:23the Girls Game. The final episode went live
- 0:26yesterday. It was such a successful series.
- 0:29I had the best time doing it and it was really exciting for that
- 0:32topic to specifically to be our first, I guess, foray into
- 0:37miniseries. But I am excited to get back to
- 0:41regular schedule where I'm doing Mini Scroll every day including
- 0:45Wednesdays. But with that being said, let's
- 0:47just get right into the stories 'cause I have three stories for
- 0:51you guys and one of them is pretty big.
- 0:55OK, so the first story that I have for you guys is that TikTok
- 1:01and Twitter is being overrun with Kamala Harris ex brat fan
- 1:07edits. So after President Joe Biden's
- 1:10recent performance in the presidential debate, many Gen.
- 1:13Z voters are calling for him to step down, James Charles
- 1:17included. We covered that earlier this
- 1:19week as discussions continue about who should take Biden's
- 1:22place if he were to step down. Gen.
- 1:25Z is rallying around Vice President Kamala Harris, not
- 1:29necessarily for her policy positions, but more so for her
- 1:33overall vibe. And they are calling themselves
- 1:37the K Hive. So over the past week, X has
- 1:42come a light with post videos and fan edits about Kamala
- 1:46Harris. As more of these posts start to
- 1:48circulate, a few fan favorite quotes have begun to emerge.
- 1:52So people are taking these quotes of her that she said in
- 1:55different speeches and things like that and like overlaying
- 1:59them with a brat filter and like with brat in the background,
- 2:03like different songs from brat. It's so funny.
- 2:07So the one that is like the most viral is from a 2023 speech.
- 2:12She quoted her mother with this line quote.
- 2:14You think you just fell out of a coconut tree.
- 2:18She was emphasizing the importance of learning from
- 2:20history, but out of context, obviously that quote is kind of
- 2:24insane. And so people are like loving
- 2:26it. And I think so the first one
- 2:27that I saw was her with that quote and it was mashed together
- 2:32with apple from Brat. So I feel like that makes sense.
- 2:36Like to me, that actually kind of aligns because apple is all
- 2:40about generational trauma. Like the apple doesn't fall far
- 2:43from the tree. Talking about falling out of a
- 2:45coconut tree. Coconut tree?
- 2:47Yeah, you just fall out of a coconut tree anyways.
- 2:51So I feel like that kind of like, goes together.
- 2:53But another favorite quote that is circulating is one that she
- 2:57actually repeats very often, which is quote what can be
- 3:00unburdened by what has been. And then they're like mixing
- 3:03these quotes and these brat filters and songs, like with
- 3:08clips of her dancing and just being like, funny.
- 3:12I don't know. It's actually the most insane
- 3:14thing. I can't describe it.
- 3:15Like it's actually almost impossible to describe in
- 3:18sentences out loud because you just have to see it.
- 3:22But if you are online at all, especially if you're on Twitter,
- 3:25you have absolutely seen at least one of these in the last
- 3:29few days. It is everywhere.
- 3:30So I actually think if you are a brand that has access to, I
- 3:36guess commercial sounds, because that's part of the problem is
- 3:38like so many brands, if you're verified, you don't have access
- 3:42to like the regular sounds. But if you're not verified or if
- 3:45you just have access to brat in general, you should make the
- 3:49like a fan at it like this. But instead of Kamala Harris,
- 3:51obviously, you should make it like, you know, your product,
- 3:54your service, your team, something that's like relevant
- 3:56to your brand, Like put the filters over, make like a fan
- 3:59edit a brat fan edit in the style of these Kamala Harris
- 4:02edits. It would be so funny and I feel
- 4:04like it would pop off the next story that I have for you guys.
- 4:07Speaking of accent popping off, Trish Crave is the latest pop
- 4:12culture update account which is specifically dedicated to
- 4:16updates about Trisha Paytas. OK, Annabelle found this
- 4:21account. When she found it, it had like
- 4:23800 followers. It was so new.
- 4:25It was so underground. And only in the last like 24
- 4:28hours has it really popped off. And it's still like very niche.
- 4:32It doesn't even have 10,000 followers yet, but it's about to
- 4:35blow up for sure. And she was like, I literally
- 4:38can't believe you did not start this first.
- 4:40I can't believe someone else started this.
- 4:43OK so Trish Crave launched on Twitter in mid June, but it
- 4:46started getting more traction just this week.
- 4:49Trish Crave is basically the exact same as Pop Crave down to
- 4:53like the branding, the style of post, the way that they write
- 4:56their captions. Like it sounds like it's right
- 4:58from the team of Pop Crave, but I feel like if it was, they
- 5:01would say that in the bio. Like it would say from the team,
- 5:04like from Pop Crave or whatever, but it doesn't say anything.
- 5:07I think it's just like a fan. So the pinned tweet at the top
- 5:11says this page is committed to delivering updates on all things
- 5:14surrounding the queen of the Internet, Trisha Paytas.
- 5:17Follow for coverage of breaking news from the famous Just Trish
- 5:20podcast. We will also be covering content
- 5:22from Trisha's friends and family.
- 5:24OK, so like an example of one of the tweets that they've posted.
- 5:28So one hour ago, they tweeted Katy Perry enthusiastically
- 5:31comments on Trisha Paytas new video quote.
- 5:34Oh my God, I'm going to send you the song.
- 5:35Please do a reaction vid. And it's like a screenshot of
- 5:38Katy Perry commenting this on Tricia pages, TikTok, I believe.
- 5:42So it like it looks exactly like Pop Crave.
- 5:44It's so funny. And you guys know, I mean, if
- 5:46you listen to this podcast, you know about Pop Crave.
- 5:49But for anyone that somehow does not Pop, Crave is like one of
- 5:52the most popular Twitter accounts right now, at least
- 5:54popular in the sense of like the zeitgeist, like it actually
- 5:58makes a difference to culture. And they just post these like,
- 6:01rogue celebrity updates. And, you know, and a celebrity
- 6:05like Camila Cabello will like, post a new selfie on Instagram
- 6:07and they'll put that on Twitter and be like, Camila Cabello
- 6:10stuns in new photo. Like they're just such mindless
- 6:16pop culture updates. But it's so funny.
- 6:18And every once in a while, they do break news.
- 6:20And I know that a lot of music managers and record labels and
- 6:23artists send information or tips or press releases to Pop Crave
- 6:28because they want them to tweet about, you know, when this new
- 6:32artist releases a single or whatever.
- 6:34Because like, they're actually quite influential.
- 6:35They have so many followers and they're one of the only Twitter
- 6:38accounts. I feel like now, especially
- 6:39after Elon Musk like destroyed the platform that is still like
- 6:43incredibly relevant. Like they're actually super
- 6:45successful. So I think it's going to blow up
- 6:48because Annabelle found this literally yesterday.
- 6:50It had like 800 followers and now they have almost 7000
- 6:54followers and Trisha and Moses both followed the account
- 6:58yesterday. So now that they followed it and
- 7:00if they start like retweeting it or reposting them or whatever,
- 7:03like they're just going to blow up.
- 7:04So ground floor right now go follow Trish Crave if you want
- 7:09to be one of the first, OK, And the last story that I have for
- 7:11you guys, this is the kind of big one.
- 7:13So I don't know if any of you guys have seen this.
- 7:16It only came up for me yesterday on my For You page but it is now
- 7:21like blowing up like crazy. So Tik Toker has called out the
- 7:24beauty brand Oy Cosmetics for ghosting her in the middle of
- 7:28her internship. O creator, I got dumb bitch.
- 7:31Itis, whose real name is Olivia on TikTok, went viral earlier
- 7:35this week when she made a video about how she was ghosted while
- 7:38interning for Poppy Cosmetics. Poppy Cosmetics is not
- 7:42affiliated to Poppy, the soda brand.
- 7:45Just to let you know. There was a lot of people in the
- 7:46comments who were confused about that.
- 7:48So Poppy was created by a woman named Nikki Naman and they sell
- 7:52colored cosmetics. In Olivia's video, she said she
- 7:56started interning for them in March but a couple days ago she
- 8:00quote UN quote. And this is presumed to be Nikki
- 8:03because she does mention Nikki later, but she doesn't mention
- 8:07her by name yet, but she just keeps referring to like she so
- 8:10presumably Nikki but could have been someone else on the team.
- 8:12She said she took Olivia out of the group Slack chat.
- 8:16So Olivia said she texted her asking what's going on and she
- 8:20didn't get an answer and then Olivia sent a second text after
- 8:24a few hours and she realized that she was blocked on
- 8:27iMessage. Olivia said she then sent her an
- 8:29e-mail and this is when she started getting worried because
- 8:32she was doing this internship for college credits and she was
- 8:35like, I won't graduate on time if I don't get these credits.
- 8:39Olivia woke up the next morning, her e-mail was unanswered and
- 8:43she noticed she had been blocked on TikTok, blocked on Instagram
- 8:47and the company account also blocked other associated
- 8:50accounts to Olivia's. So like when you block someone
- 8:52on Instagram, it will block them and all the other accounts that
- 8:56they own or like manage. But she said they also blocked
- 9:00her like college equestrian account.
- 9:02And that wasn't like, it's not like her account.
- 9:04It's like the college is equestrian account that she does
- 9:07have access to. But she was like, I don't know
- 9:08how they would know that. I don't know.
- 9:10I'm sure it's just like some Instagram like Thai thing.
- 9:12And then she also said she noticed she was locked out of
- 9:15the company TikTok account the day before.
- 9:17But I guess I'm presuming that she noticed that the password
- 9:21had changed to the TikTok before the slack chat said like before
- 9:24everything happened. And she was like, I just kind of
- 9:26thought, well, maybe there's like a new intern.
- 9:28We needed to change the e-mail, like whatever.
- 9:30So Olivia was like, I've been ghosted and blocked on
- 9:33everything. I don't know how to get a hold
- 9:35of anyone. Olivia said she's yeah, been
- 9:37ghosted and blocked on everything.
- 9:39And so the only way that she kind of knew how to get their
- 9:42attention was she tried leaving a bunch of one star reviews on
- 9:47their Amazon page. And she also said that the day
- 9:50before she got blocked on everything, Nikki, who she did
- 9:53name this time, texted her at 4:00 PM asking Olivia if she
- 9:57could make some content. Olivia said she could later in
- 9:59the week. And then Nikki said, oh, yeah,
- 10:01that's great. Totally.
- 10:02OK. So, you know, there was no
- 10:03indication that was like the last communications that she had
- 10:06with her and then she was just blocked on everything.
- 10:08So like I said, this video blew up.
- 10:11It has 4.5 million views. And Poppy, social media
- 10:15understandably was flooded with comments about it.
- 10:18So the brand turned comments off.
- 10:20And I saw on Reddit, some people said that they removed all the
- 10:25content that featured Olivia as well on TikTok.
- 10:28I wasn't able to like Fact Check that, but that is what I read.
- 10:31And then they issued a response on TikTok yesterday in two text
- 10:35slides. So it says some of you may have
- 10:37seen recent TikTok posts from a now former intern about the
- 10:40former interns brief tenure with the company.
- 10:43Unbeknownst to the company at the time, the former intern
- 10:46interviewed for, commenced and engaged in the internship.
- 10:49The former intern was seeking university credits for the
- 10:51internship, which was not disclosed to the company until
- 10:54May. In May, the company was also
- 10:57advised by the former intern that the university required the
- 11:00former intern to complete a document demonstrating that the
- 11:03former intern complied with the University's requirements to
- 11:06receive internship credits. The Former Intern, however,
- 11:10advised the Company that the Former Intern failed to comply
- 11:13with the University's requirements for receiving
- 11:16internship credits, specifically the number of hours required by
- 11:19the University each week. Notwithstanding the Former
- 11:22Intern's failure to comply with the University's requirement,
- 11:26the Former Intern requested that the Company execute the document
- 11:29and to misrepresent to the University that the Former
- 11:32Intern complied with the University's requirements for
- 11:35credits, something that the Company would not do.
- 11:39As a result of the Former Intern's recent posts and under
- 11:41a full reservation of the Company's rights and remedies,
- 11:44the Company reported the Former Intern and provided documentary
- 11:47evidence to the University. With the Company's full
- 11:49cooperation, this matter is now being handled and investigated
- 11:52by the Former Interns University.
- 11:54The Company has been happy to cooperate with and fully
- 11:57supports the investigation. As a result of the ongoing
- 12:00investigation into the former intern by the University, the
- 12:03Company will not provide any further public comment until
- 12:06such time as the investigation has concluded.
- 12:08The company, however, was compelled to make the statement
- 12:11to correct the public record. The Company appreciates your
- 12:14understanding. Thank you.
- 12:15OK, so essentially what they're saying is that Olivia took the
- 12:20internship, didn't tell them that she needed college credit.
- 12:23That's actually happened to US one time before.
- 12:25But I mean, it's usually fine. Like it's just it's just like a
- 12:29number of hours thing. I mean, I don't know, maybe it's
- 12:31different at in the States, maybe it's different at her
- 12:33university. We were just like, OK, we can
- 12:34just make sure that you intern for X amount of hours every week
- 12:37for X amount of months. Like that was all it took for us
- 12:39to like meet that requirement. But I understand feeling a bit
- 12:43blindsided for sure. And I understand not wanting to
- 12:46go through with the internship if Olivia was not able to
- 12:49complete those hours. And so, you know, you as a
- 12:51company don't feel comfortable lying to the university.
- 12:54Like I, I get all of that. I think where people are like,
- 12:59OK, but is that you communicate that to the employee, to the
- 13:05intern. You don't just ghost them on
- 13:07everything. So that's where there's like
- 13:08something that's not adding up. So it's really confusing because
- 13:12if this is what they did, if they just, you know, got
- 13:15uncomfortable and instead of communicating that with her and
- 13:18terminating her internship, they literally did just ghost her.
- 13:21I mean, yeah, that is like, wildly unprofessional.
- 13:24We're at this like weird place right now in professional
- 13:27corporate culture where TikTok has almost like democratized it
- 13:32in a lot of ways and given the worker, like the average worker,
- 13:36a lot of power in a way that we didn't have previous.
- 13:39And that's amazing on one hand. But on the other hand, like, I
- 13:43do worry. I just worry that there's a lot
- 13:50of Gray area in a lot of these stories that we see on TikTok,
- 13:55whether it's someone calling a brand out for, I don't know, a
- 14:00faulty product or bad customer service, or it's, you know, a
- 14:04former employee like this, which we've seen many times as well,
- 14:07calling out a former employer for something.
- 14:10I think sometimes in these stories, there can be enough
- 14:13Gray area that it's going to possibly like flip the other way
- 14:20on the person. So like that, like Olivia's
- 14:22getting a lot of praise and like a lot of support right now by
- 14:25the general public because like, obviously that is a horrible
- 14:28thing to happen. You just getting blocked and
- 14:31ghosted by your employer is horrific.
- 14:34But I can already see in her comments section tons of people
- 14:36being like, oh, the brand put out a statement and like arguing
- 14:39about like, what was actually unethical about them doing this
- 14:43if she was asking them to lie. And then other people commenting
- 14:45saying that Olivia was agreeing in some of the comments or like
- 14:48admitting in some of the comments that she had asked them
- 14:51to lie. And I didn't see those comments.
- 14:53But either way, a potential employer could see all of that,
- 14:56could look in the comments and could make an opinion about that
- 15:01person and how they will behave in the workplace based on those
- 15:05comments, even if they're not factual.
- 15:07Like I saw tons of comments saying that she had been
- 15:09admitting to it, but I never saw those comments.
- 15:11Like I never saw her admitting to that in the comments.
- 15:14It goes back, I think a lot to like our concerns around media
- 15:18literacy. I'm not concerned about people
- 15:22using TikTok as a platform to speak out about things.
- 15:26I'm concerned about the receiver, like how they are
- 15:29going to interpret that and the consequences of these people who
- 15:33are speaking out and using this platform to their advantage in a
- 15:36way that we haven't been able to in the past and how that might
- 15:40just come back and bite them in the ass even harder.
- 15:43So that's all I will say about that because I have no idea
- 15:47what's going on in this situation.
- 15:48This situation is so confusing, but I still stand by the fact
- 15:51that like if she was blocked and ghosted without any proper
- 15:55communication by her employer, that is that's horrible, that's
- 15:59horrible. But the story has already been
- 16:01twisted so many different ways in the comment section in the
- 16:05reaction videos that that's what I'm trying to say.
- 16:08Like the narrative can get away from you so quickly when
- 16:12something goes viral. And that's why sometimes I do
- 16:15feel like unless it's like absolute worst case scenario,
- 16:19like keeping it offline and trying to deal with it privately
- 16:22is sometimes the best case scenario.
- 16:24And I think because we have this platform of TikTok and we know
- 16:28that if we post things, it could go viral.
- 16:31If something like really bad happens to you, you could post
- 16:34it and it could go viral. And you know, you could have
- 16:37that chance to say your piece to get a bit of justice.
- 16:40No matter what the situation is, it can feel empowering to do
- 16:44that, but I just don't trust that the people in power are
- 16:49going to actually be affected by that all the time.
- 16:51And I don't trust that it won't just come back and like, you
- 16:56know, bite us harder in the ass is basically what I'm trying to
- 16:58say. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 17:00Mini Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 17:03Thank you so much for being so supportive of this podcast.
- 17:07I hope you liked this episode. Please remember to rate, review
- 17:10and subscribe. It means so much to me and I
- 17:13will have a deep dive for you guys tomorrow and I'll talk to
- 17:15you on Monday. OK, bye.
