- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody? Welcome into another edition of
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Czech Odally Andrew decheco here Eagles beat reporter friendsidethebirds
- 0:17Speaker 1: dot Com. Sunday morning, it was announced that the Eagles
- 0:20Speaker 1: and special teams coordinator Michael Clay agreed to a reunion.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Michael Clay had an expiring contract. He interviewed earlier in
- 0:28Speaker 1: the week with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the same job,
- 0:32Speaker 1: but he will remain in Philadelphia. Good news there because
- 0:35Speaker 1: Michael Clay is a respected coach who I believe gets
- 0:38Speaker 1: the most out of the players that he's working with
- 0:41Speaker 1: at a position, as at a unit that generally has
- 0:45Speaker 1: yearly turnover, I think he's done a really good job
- 0:48Speaker 1: of maximizing the players at his disposal. Two players this
- 0:52Speaker 1: season won Special Teams Player of the Week for the
- 0:55Speaker 1: NFC for the Eagles, Jordan Davis, Jalen Carr, and I
- 1:01Speaker 1: think when you look at the season that Braydon Man had,
- 1:05Speaker 1: the season that Sidney Brown, Key Lee Ringo, Jeremiah Trotter,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Junior Kylin Grants and will Shipley cam Latsu had. From
- 1:12Speaker 1: a coverage standpoint, yeah, I mean you can't necessarily look
- 1:17Speaker 1: at the kicking deficiencies and directly place that at the
- 1:21Speaker 1: feet of Michael Clay. I mean, I think there's too
- 1:24Speaker 1: often blurred lines when it comes to on field execution
- 1:28Speaker 1: and coaching. And that's not exclusive solely to Philadelphia, but
- 1:33Speaker 1: it's something that I've seen across the NFL, and I
- 1:36Speaker 1: think he's done a really good job bouncing back after
- 1:38Speaker 1: that twenty twenty two season that I know many on
- 1:42Speaker 1: the outside were clamoring for a replacement there, but credit
- 1:46Speaker 1: the Eagles and their belief in Michael Clay for allowing
- 1:50Speaker 1: him to see it through. And that kind of goes
- 1:52Speaker 1: to my point where you got to sometimes exercise some
- 1:55Speaker 1: patience when it comes to coaches. Everybody wants to swap
- 1:59Speaker 1: someone out after one year if it doesn't work. Certain
- 2:02Speaker 1: not everything is created equal. There are certain times where
- 2:06Speaker 1: that's warranted. But if you're seeing something from the coach
- 2:10Speaker 1: behind the scenes, and maybe you're looking at some executional
- 2:14Speaker 1: errors and maybe you're not placing all of that at
- 2:17Speaker 1: the you know, at the feet of the coach, there's
- 2:21Speaker 1: reasons for optimism or at least bringing him back, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: the Eagles were able to allow him to see it through,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and credit them for for having that kind of patience
- 2:31Speaker 1: to to not necessarily cast him aside and try to
- 2:35Speaker 1: find the next person. At what I've noticed, and this
- 2:39Speaker 1: isn't something that has struck me this season, coaches around
- 2:45Speaker 1: the NFL are unfairly chastised, unfairly blamed. A lot of
- 2:51Speaker 1: times you scroll social media and you see a lot
- 2:54Speaker 1: of you know this coach that coach, when I mean
- 2:58Speaker 1: you have to look at on field execution as well.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Because a kicker misses his kicks, let's say that's not
- 3:04Speaker 1: on the coordinator. If there's turnovers in a game, that's
- 3:10Speaker 1: not on the offensive coordinator, that's not on the head coach.
- 3:13Speaker 1: That's on the player because they're not out there doing it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It sounds simple enough, but you'd be surprised about how
- 3:19Speaker 1: much nonsense I see on social media, really just putting
- 3:24Speaker 1: coaches under the microscope. Sometimes that's fair, sometimes that is warranted.
- 3:29Speaker 1: But a lot of the times, without knowing the details
- 3:34Speaker 1: of the play or without knowing what they do behind
- 3:37Speaker 1: the scenes, I think a lot of it is misinformed.
- 3:41Speaker 1: But anyway, I want to get into some Eagles free
- 3:45Speaker 1: agents and kind of where I see it as we
- 3:48Speaker 1: stand right now. We'll start with Dallas Goddard, who's thirty
- 3:52Speaker 1: one years old, had a career season, broke a sixty
- 3:55Speaker 1: year Eagles record for most receiving touchdowns by a tight
- 3:58Speaker 1: end in Eagles history in a single seat, that would
- 4:00Speaker 1: be Pete Retz laugh Goddard had eleven receiving touchdowns, had
- 4:05Speaker 1: a clear rapport with Jalen Hurts, and has had a
- 4:08Speaker 1: clear rapport with Jayalen Hurts dating back to training camps.
- 4:11Speaker 1: And I mentioned in particular this training camp that a
- 4:15Speaker 1: lot of Jalen Hurts's passes were going to Dallas Goddard,
- 4:18Speaker 1: which to me suggested that there was going to be
- 4:21Speaker 1: more of an emphasis on involving the tight end and
- 4:23Speaker 1: the short to intermediate levels of the field. And credit
- 4:26Speaker 1: Kevin Petullo, that's right, Kevin Petullo for finding different ways
- 4:31Speaker 1: to get the football to Dallas Goddard in the red zone,
- 4:34Speaker 1: be it creatively on handoffs or shovel passes, or just
- 4:39Speaker 1: utilizing his frame and getting him more in the mix
- 4:44Speaker 1: because he's been largely absent from the Eagles red zone
- 4:47Speaker 1: plans in recent years. And I thought for all of
- 4:50Speaker 1: the all of the shortcomings, if you will, that you
- 4:53Speaker 1: want to place on the shoulders of Kevin Battullo. He
- 4:57Speaker 1: got more out of Dallas Goddard than any coordinator has,
- 5:00Speaker 1: So that's something that you have to check off that
- 5:03Speaker 1: box and give him credit for that. All that being said,
- 5:06Speaker 1: he's thirty one years old. It's hard to see a
- 5:08Speaker 1: team being willing to dole out a lot of money
- 5:12Speaker 1: to bring him in, the money that he may be
- 5:14Speaker 1: looking for coming off a career season, and the Eagles
- 5:17Speaker 1: have three tight ends we're going to get to all
- 5:19Speaker 1: of them, including Dallas Goddter, who are going to be
- 5:22Speaker 1: free agents. Then if you don't bring him back, that
- 5:25Speaker 1: really puts you in a bind where you're now trying
- 5:28Speaker 1: to get a budget free agent to patch it together
- 5:31Speaker 1: as a stop gap, or you're trying to draft a player.
- 5:35Speaker 1: You're really confining yourself to drafting a player to be
- 5:39Speaker 1: your starter, and that would have to be in the
- 5:41Speaker 1: first or second round in all likelihood. So I think
- 5:44Speaker 1: he will be back on a modest deal much like
- 5:48Speaker 1: last season and the Eagles. This is just my prediction.
- 5:52Speaker 1: The Eagles will draft his successor and the draft and
- 5:56Speaker 1: have him learn under god it for a year. I
- 5:59Speaker 1: just think because of all the things surrounding that position.
- 6:01Speaker 1: They don't have a lot of players there aside from EJ. Jenkins.
- 6:05Speaker 1: There isn't a tight end under contract going into free agency.
- 6:09Speaker 1: E J. Jenkins signed a reserve futures deal, and the
- 6:12Speaker 1: impact that Goddard have, the connection he has with Hertz,
- 6:15Speaker 1: I think all those things line up, so it would
- 6:17Speaker 1: make sense for Godar to be back. Reed Blankenship is
- 6:20Speaker 1: an interesting one because Vic Vangiel really likes him. He
- 6:24Speaker 1: likes his ability to process and be that traffic cop
- 6:28Speaker 1: back there, if you will, smart player, fundamentally sound, all
- 6:32Speaker 1: of those things that go a long way with Vic Fangio,
- 6:34Speaker 1: especially when you look at the complexities of his defense
- 6:37Speaker 1: and how much responsibility is sort of cast on the
- 6:41Speaker 1: shoulders of the safeties and linebackers. But all that being said,
- 6:44Speaker 1: Red Blankenship did not have a good season from a
- 6:46Speaker 1: coverage standpoint. I thought there were a lot of moments
- 6:49Speaker 1: this year where he was victimized over the middle of
- 6:53Speaker 1: the field, and I think the forty nine Ers game
- 6:56Speaker 1: he'd been taking advantage of a little bit. I believe
- 6:59Speaker 1: the Eagles could use a bit of an upgrade there
- 7:04Speaker 1: from in terms of athleticism. From a coverage, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 1: from a coverage perspective, and you have Drew mccouba coming back,
- 7:11Speaker 1: so that takes care of some of that. But then
- 7:13Speaker 1: there's also another issue of not having a lot of
- 7:17Speaker 1: players there. You have Red Blankenship, you have Marcus Apps,
- 7:20Speaker 1: both players who's you know. Marcus Apps was signed to
- 7:24Speaker 1: the practice squad, he's going to be thirty years old.
- 7:28Speaker 1: You have Blankenship, you have mccouba, But then you have
- 7:30Speaker 1: Sidney Brown. You have Andre sam who was signed to
- 7:33Speaker 1: a reserve future deal. So if you don't bring back
- 7:35Speaker 1: re Blankenship, you don't have an obvious starting safety unless
- 7:38Speaker 1: you're going to roll with Marcus Apps and and kind
- 7:42Speaker 1: of go back to the well there. I think the
- 7:45Speaker 1: it's so hard to go into the draft with a
- 7:47Speaker 1: bunch of needs. But I still think that the Eagles
- 7:50Speaker 1: could find a more suitable player for the to pair
- 7:55Speaker 1: with mccouba, maybe in free agency. But Red Blankenship is
- 7:58Speaker 1: a homegrown player. It's not going to be an easy
- 8:00Speaker 1: decision for the Eagles. He wants to be in Philadelphia.
- 8:03Speaker 1: He was beside himself a little bit after the game, emotional.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I guess you could say he's struck up a really
- 8:08Speaker 1: good rapport with Cooper Degen. I think the Eagles will
- 8:12Speaker 1: do what they can to bring him back, and he's
- 8:15Speaker 1: not going to break the bank read blanket ship bet
- 8:18Speaker 1: on himself going into the season. He changed agencies, but
- 8:22Speaker 1: he didn't have the season that I'm sure he nor
- 8:24Speaker 1: the Eagles envisioned. So yes, it probably can't hurt and
- 8:27Speaker 1: it's not going to break the bank to keep him in.
- 8:30Speaker 1: But if it were me, I would try to look
- 8:32Speaker 1: for a different style of safety to give yourself some
- 8:40Speaker 1: more versatility on the back end. But I think he's
- 8:43Speaker 1: a player that when you look at the Eagles over
- 8:44Speaker 1: the past few seasons, he's been sort of taken for granted.
- 8:48Speaker 1: But I think when you're trying to advance your secondary
- 8:52Speaker 1: and you're trying to add a little bit more athleticism
- 8:55Speaker 1: on the back end, especially in a pass happy league,
- 8:58Speaker 1: especially when you just saw a team try to exploit
- 9:00Speaker 1: the middle, the deep middle of the Eagles defense. That's
- 9:04Speaker 1: gonna continue this season next season as well. So it's
- 9:08Speaker 1: not a slam dunk. It's something that they're going to
- 9:10Speaker 1: have to think about. But that's just sort of my
- 9:12Speaker 1: analysis right now. Obviously, a lot can change. Jalen Phillips
- 9:18Speaker 1: interesting and look, there's no mistake that when he arrived
- 9:23Speaker 1: the defense got better. Physical player, lengthy, sets the edge
- 9:28Speaker 1: with violence and authority. Loved being in Philadelphia, made no
- 9:32Speaker 1: mistake that this was a place that he wanted to be.
- 9:35Speaker 1: He has a family now and a lot of things changed.
- 9:38Speaker 1: He could be looking for some stability, but knowing that
- 9:41Speaker 1: he is twenty seven years old, he's going to command
- 9:44Speaker 1: a lot of money, and he's a pass rusher. He
- 9:47Speaker 1: does have an injury history which could factor into the
- 9:49Speaker 1: equation and sort of preclude some teams from offering him
- 9:55Speaker 1: a substantial amount of money. But we all know that
- 9:58Speaker 1: pass rushers get paid in free agents. And when you
- 10:00Speaker 1: look at all the name that the Eagles have here
- 10:03Speaker 1: and how they're going to have to start paying the
- 10:04Speaker 1: offensive side of the ball, or I should say they're
- 10:08Speaker 1: going to start paying the defensive side of the ball,
- 10:09Speaker 1: start drafting on the offensive side, They're gonna have to
- 10:12Speaker 1: make a lot of decisions. And you have Nolan Smith,
- 10:16Speaker 1: you have Jay Looks Hunt. Jalen Phillips I think would
- 10:18Speaker 1: be sort of a luxury, but his arrival unlocked Jay
- 10:23Speaker 1: Looks Hunt, Jay looks Hunt was the eagles best pass
- 10:25Speaker 1: rusher down the stretch, and I think a full season
- 10:28Speaker 1: of Phillips playing that outside linebacker role for Vic Fangio,
- 10:33Speaker 1: you're going to see a player that could have double
- 10:35Speaker 1: digit sacked potential. He only had two sacks with the Eagles,
- 10:38Speaker 1: but I encourage everybody to look beyond the box score
- 10:41Speaker 1: because his impact was far greater than that. All that
- 10:44Speaker 1: being said, I would imagine it would be difficult to
- 10:49Speaker 1: retain him, but I would try to find a way
- 10:52Speaker 1: to do that and try and try to keep the
- 10:55Speaker 1: band as together as possible. It's going to be very difficult,
- 10:59Speaker 1: as I said, because there's gonna be a lot of
- 11:00Speaker 1: players that they have to start paying Jalen Carter, Quinna, Mitchell,
- 11:04Speaker 1: Cooper dejen. I mean, you start to look across the
- 11:11Speaker 1: board there and there's a lot of the young names
- 11:14Speaker 1: that they're going to have to make a decision on.
- 11:16Speaker 1: And so that's why this is a really interesting name
- 11:21Speaker 1: there as he's Ojulari. We didn't get to see a
- 11:24Speaker 1: lot from him this year, but he was someone who
- 11:27Speaker 1: they signed along with Josh Hushe those one year prove
- 11:30Speaker 1: it deal type of players. Ojilari has been banged up
- 11:33Speaker 1: in his career when he was with the Giants. Really
- 11:35Speaker 1: great guy. I talked to him briefly earlier in the season.
- 11:38Speaker 1: He was put on injury reserve with a hamstring injury.
- 11:40Speaker 1: That he goes open up his twenty one day practice
- 11:42Speaker 1: window late in the season and for the right price,
- 11:47Speaker 1: sure it can't hurt to bring him back for training camp.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I can't imagine there's going to be a ton of
- 11:52Speaker 1: teams clamoring for his services. He hasn't. He didn't play
- 11:56Speaker 1: all that much this season. Still young though, still a
- 11:59Speaker 1: young player. But I think when you're an Eagles team
- 12:01Speaker 1: looking to fill out the depth chart and have a
- 12:04Speaker 1: cost effective veteran there that could be invaluable from a
- 12:08Speaker 1: training camp perspective. Getting someone in there is played. As
- 12:10Speaker 1: I said, a lot of football can give you some
- 12:12Speaker 1: productive reps, and if he's able to stay healthy, maybe
- 12:15Speaker 1: he's able to latch on as one of the final
- 12:17Speaker 1: edge rushers in the rotation. In twenty twenty six. Johan
- 12:22Speaker 1: Dotson he goes wide receiver is not necessarily an interesting
- 12:27Speaker 1: one because he didn't get utilized. He had under forty
- 12:30Speaker 1: receptions in the regular season over the two seasons combined
- 12:33Speaker 1: didn't have the impact that I think many were expecting.
- 12:36Speaker 1: When the Eagles traded for him before the twenty twenty
- 12:39Speaker 1: four season and I talked to him McClean out. He
- 12:43Speaker 1: mentioned that he believes his best football is in front
- 12:45Speaker 1: of him, that he can help a team win a
- 12:47Speaker 1: lot of games. How he had to really tap into
- 12:51Speaker 1: his patients here in Philadelphia because everywhere he's gone he's
- 12:54Speaker 1: been a top receiver. That's not going to be the
- 12:56Speaker 1: fact that the case here in Philadelphia, and he's going
- 13:00Speaker 1: to have to always take on a cameo role. He's
- 13:03Speaker 1: a young player that I'm sure when you look around
- 13:06Speaker 1: the NFL he could definitely take on a larger role elsewhere.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That's not going to happen here in Philadelphia. The way
- 13:11Speaker 1: he was talking, it didn't sound like he expected to
- 13:14Speaker 1: come back. But we're so early into this process that
- 13:17Speaker 1: it's just so hard to navigate. But I would be
- 13:20Speaker 1: surprised if Johan Dotson's back. They have Darius Cooper there
- 13:23Speaker 1: who can fill in. They have Johnny Wilson coming back.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I would imagine they would look towards the draft to
- 13:28Speaker 1: add another receiver there, and all of a sudden becomes crowded,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and Johan Dotson wouldn't be assured to be that number
- 13:35Speaker 1: three receiver, and I imagine he's going to want to
- 13:38Speaker 1: go somewhere else for an opportunity to have much more
- 13:41Speaker 1: of a role offensively. So I don't necessarily see a
- 13:45Speaker 1: path where Johan Dotson is coming back.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying
- 13:52Speaker 2: to clean up their habits and that includes me. Honestly,

- 17:13Speaker 7: one and up.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Let's see, I'm not going to get to all of these.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I'm going to split this up, but I'll end today
- 17:21Speaker 1: with two players. We'll go braden Man and Braiden Man
- 17:25Speaker 1: punted at what I believe it was an all pro
- 17:28Speaker 1: level this season, just outstanding handling the weather. He has
- 17:32Speaker 1: a lot of experience kicking in the Northeast, of course
- 17:35Speaker 1: with the Jets for the first few seasons of his career,
- 17:38Speaker 1: kicking in Buffalo, kicking in New England, kicking in MetLife Stadium,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and then you saw that really take shape when he
- 17:45Speaker 1: had to kick in the driving rain in Buffalo in
- 17:48Speaker 1: the forty nine Ers game. He was able to alter
- 17:51Speaker 1: his punts and have more of line drive when facing
- 17:54Speaker 1: the wind. And he was just money for the Eagles
- 17:57Speaker 1: all season long, especially helping out an offense that really
- 18:00Speaker 1: struggled to move the football. I thought he did a
- 18:02Speaker 1: nice job bailing them out many times this season, helping
- 18:06Speaker 1: that field position game. Michael Clay, who the Eagles, of course,
- 18:10Speaker 1: as I mentioned, are keeping and retaining, mentioned that he
- 18:14Speaker 1: believes that Man has some of the best hands in
- 18:16Speaker 1: the NFL from the holder position. That's something that also
- 18:19Speaker 1: shouldn't be discounted. And he's just really consistent. So he
- 18:22Speaker 1: would be among the players on this list, and there
- 18:25Speaker 1: are many, he would be someone that I would look
- 18:27Speaker 1: at and make it priority. You may not think about
- 18:30Speaker 1: the punter in the NFL and over the course of
- 18:33Speaker 1: an NFL game or even an NFL season, but you
- 18:36Speaker 1: certainly will realize when you don't have a good one,
- 18:38Speaker 1: or when you have one that you're not necessarily comfortable with,
- 18:43Speaker 1: like Aaron Sippas hate to pick on him, but go
- 18:45Speaker 1: back to the Super Bowl when he had that kind
- 18:47Speaker 1: of punt late in that game, tickedarius Tony Braydon. Man
- 18:51Speaker 1: hasn't had those type of gaffs, and when you have
- 18:53Speaker 1: someone like that, you want to do what you can
- 18:56Speaker 1: to keep him in the building. Kylon Grantson will be
- 19:00Speaker 1: the last player we discussed today, and Kylon Granson was
- 19:03Speaker 1: a player who signed a one year deal, was with
- 19:05Speaker 1: the Colts for a while, could really do anything, line
- 19:08Speaker 1: up in the backfield, lineup out wide, in line, whatever,
- 19:12Speaker 1: whether or you could look at the quality and the
- 19:15Speaker 1: production from all those different alignments. But I just think
- 19:19Speaker 1: that he's a player that when he signed and Harrison
- 19:22Speaker 1: Bryant signed, they were looked at as almost maybe competing
- 19:26Speaker 1: for the same job. I liked Granson's versatility, but where
- 19:29Speaker 1: he really made his mark this season, and I think
- 19:31Speaker 1: he only had a few catches in the regular season,
- 19:34Speaker 1: was on special teams. For much of the year. He
- 19:36Speaker 1: was among the league's leading tacklers from a special teams perspective.
- 19:41Speaker 1: He was all over the field in that regard. I
- 19:44Speaker 1: don't really see a spot for him in terms of
- 19:48Speaker 1: tight end his position to trade because I mean, I
- 19:52Speaker 1: think the Eagles may look to just retool or add
- 19:56Speaker 1: a player in the draft that could shape the the
- 20:00Speaker 1: complexion of that group. You know, depending on how much
- 20:04Speaker 1: the team values him on special teams, maybe they bring
- 20:07Speaker 1: him back. Maybe Michael Clay has a you know, has
- 20:10Speaker 1: a hand and saying hey, let's you know, he was
- 20:12Speaker 1: great for this unit. Try to find a way to
- 20:15Speaker 1: maybe bring him back into camp and then let him
- 20:17Speaker 1: battle for a roster spot. It's not going to cost
- 20:19Speaker 1: a lot of money, I can't imagine, but maybe Kylon
- 20:22Speaker 1: Granson wants to go somewhere else where he has a
- 20:24Speaker 1: chance to be utilized more as a receiver. That's just
- 20:27Speaker 1: looking at it from both perspectives, and we've always gotten through.
- 20:32Speaker 1: We've always made a dent in the half of that list.
- 20:34Speaker 1: So we'll break that into another podcast at another time,
- 20:37Speaker 1: But those are just some of my thoughts here on
- 20:40Speaker 1: a Sunday morning, as the Eagles off. As the Eagles
- 20:44Speaker 1: offseason continues to churn on, and we'll bring you all
- 20:47Speaker 1: the updates on the offensive coordinator search as that happens.
- 20:52Speaker 1: And I have an interesting podcast that I think you're
- 20:54Speaker 1: all really going to enjoy coming out on Monday, So
- 20:58Speaker 1: stay tuned for that really good insight and perspective there,
- 21:02Speaker 1: and I welcome your feedback and I hope you enjoy it.
- 21:04Speaker 1: But for now, that's going to do it for this
- 21:06Speaker 1: edition of the Czecho Daily. I'm Andrew to checko and
- 21:09Speaker 1: I'll catch you on the next one.
