- 0:19Bhi, guys, this is then, would hear from Palace of the King.
- 0:23We've got our brand new single, Tear It Down out right now,
- 0:27and our album's coming out December fourteen, and we're touring in December, so
- 0:31we've got heaps of stuff going on and it's great to be here, beautiful.
- 0:36Thanks for joining us today, brother, Thanks for having me. Chris,
- 0:40my pleasure. So as you say, man POLISI King ever released your
- 0:43new single Chair Down just today, So I know it hasn't been long,
- 0:47mate, but how's the earlier resupposed to been. Yeah, it's been great
- 0:50because it's quite a pretty full on riffy song. So I've been trying to
- 0:58We've been I don't know if you've noticed, You've been putting a new song
- 1:00out pretty much every eight weeks for months now, and I've been trying to
- 1:07mix it up. So the last one was a bit more of a cruisy
- 1:10American black crosy kind of thing, and this one's much more fast, rifty,
- 1:17kind of Stevanies tinged coins of the Stone Age kind of thing. So
- 1:23yeah, I've been trying to mix it up. So every time I put
- 1:26you know, a new post saying here's a new single. The fans of
- 1:30the band are all like, what, I wasn't expecting this a banger.
- 1:38I like to say, she's a very up tempo rock song, mate,
- 1:40So what's it actually about. Well, it's really about you know, sort
- 1:48of looking at a situation or a relationship or a person or you know,
- 1:56it can be sort of directed anyway where you just kind of so frustrating you
- 2:04just want to tear it all down and just go screw this, I need
- 2:08to start again. You know. It's one of those kind of it's that
- 2:12kind of situation. Yeah, And of course the song is taken from your
- 2:15new album Friends in Low Places, which is due out of December four the
- 2:19end. So you said you've sort of released a few different songs made,
- 2:22but is this one of good sonic representation or what do we expect? Yeah,
- 2:25we had I produced album myself, and then it's taken time. We've
- 2:35kind of been going in and out of the studio and then we've had a
- 2:37lot of different mixes, mix mix different songs. So tear It Down was
- 2:44mixed by Steve James, who you probably know from the Screaming Jets. So
- 2:50it's been it's from the screaming jets. You know, he's a producer of
- 2:55most of their records. It's been had different mixes coming every now and then.
- 3:01Ricky Ray mixed most of the album. Ricky Ray, who does a
- 3:07lot of the stuff with the Baby Animals. So it's been we've had a
- 3:12few different mixes actually, but sonically I feel like it's very got a sound
- 3:19about it, because the band's got a sound about it. You know,
- 3:21when I say I produce the records, I'm basically the guy who's the conduit
- 3:25for the band. I record the band live and then I go away and
- 3:30do all the vocals and all that sort of stuff. The new single is
- 3:34a fast up tenpo one. We've got cruisy ones, We've got songs that
- 3:38are more bluesy, but ultimately it all it's sort of like a guitar orientated
- 3:43heavy rock band, you know, that's what we're about. Tell us a
- 3:46bit more about the album from a musical point of view, made like,
- 3:49did you sit down with the focus in mind of where you go or did
- 3:53you let me dictate the direction we knin'd of What we basically do is we
- 3:58get everyone sort of comes to the table with ideas a lot of the musical
- 4:02ideas come from Shawnee Johnson, a keyboard player in Palace. He's been with
- 4:08the band since the start. So but everyone comes to the table with ideas,
- 4:12so some other people get involved as well, Cam Cameron mcglinchy, the
- 4:15drummer who also plays with Skimming Jets. You know, Anthony and I wrote
- 4:21Children of the Evolution. Lee Madden has come back to the band. So
- 4:28ultimately we get together and we record everyone's musical ideas in the studio and then
- 4:35some songs make it and some don't. So work through the songs. We
- 4:42might have twenty songs. We'll start getting things closer to finished, and then
- 4:46someone might put their hand up and say, hey, this fits. You
- 4:51know, I don't know if this sounds like us or things like that.
- 4:55Usually it's Shawne that I'll bounce things off. I trust his instincts, and
- 5:00if he says, look, man, I think it's really good, but
- 5:02I don't think it's a Palace song. So then that's how the album finds.
- 5:06It's found and get sort of honed down. It's like, you know,
- 5:14it's like we're polishing a diamond and sort of slowly but surely things get
- 5:17cut away, and then in the end we usually end up with ten songs
- 5:23that sound like a congruent sort of album, all all of the same kind
- 5:27of of the same time, you know, and then the other songs get
- 5:30put to the side and you never know they something might come with them one
- 5:34day. We've got a lot of stuff on hard drives, live recordings,
- 5:40songs, we've never released songs with guest singers, not There's all sorts of
- 5:45stuff. And you mentioned before, but you produce and record everything on the
- 5:49album. So what are some of the pros and tons to start having someone
- 5:54in house form that role. Well, a big pro is that any money
- 6:02and I've got a great studio space, so we get to use that without
- 6:08having to spend a lot of money as well, and so that's a big
- 6:14pro. I think. Also, we've been in the band since it started.
- 6:18I really know how everyone works, and I know when to give someone
- 6:23some space and when to push someone and when to encourage someone. You know,
- 6:28sometimes I have to encourage some of the quieter guys to bring their ideas.
- 6:33So I think I just know I've got a great relationship with everyone in
- 6:38the band. I really know what I'm after and then as we go along,
- 6:45I have to sort of, you know, cross reference and make sure
- 6:46everyone agrees we're on the same path. So I think there's a lot of
- 6:50pros I don't I think the only negative, mind is that I would love
- 6:57to just sit back, write the songs, sing the songs, and sit
- 7:03back and let someone else do everything else. But I don't know if that
- 7:09would end up being a pro because a lot of times you can end up
- 7:14with a producer who just wants to make their records so they run away with
- 7:17something, you know, and that as we both know, as you know,
- 7:21that that can be a great thing. I mean, look at what
- 7:26mart Lane did was back in Black, you know, so that was he
- 7:29you know, and Bob Rock with the Metallic Black album. You know.
- 7:32Whether you like those albums or not, they basically part of the band,
- 7:38those guys in that situation, and they made two of the biggest rock albums
- 7:41of all time. So who knows. I mean, we got the studio
- 7:45with mart Lang, he might make an amazing record. That's our best record
- 7:48ever. At this point though, I feel like we're cruising along really nicely
- 7:55and we're making great records, and I know, be inner working is better
- 7:59than anyone and I feel really good about it the way we work, and
- 8:03you're hitting the raid in Decembers from the album made, so where's that going
- 8:07to take out? Well, So it's been a bit hard to tour since
- 8:11the pandemic. When we were coming out of the pandemic, Cam and Sewne
- 8:16and myself all got offered really good gigs because everyone suddenly went back out on
- 8:24the road and suddenly started putting new members in their bands and and got really,
- 8:31really busy. So I was asked to play John Stevens, Cam was
- 8:37asked to play drums and join the Screaming Jets. Shawne was asked to play
- 8:41keyboards with James Rain. So of course I said to everyone, you know,
- 8:46they didn't need my permission, but it was we would have been after
- 8:50two years of no work. I think that was. They were great opportunities.
- 8:54So I just said, look, let's just focus on new music and
- 8:56we'll work out touring around these guys, which we've done. So December comes
- 9:01about. It comes about because the Jets, James and John are all off
- 9:09the road and we're going to do an East coast run. So we're going
- 9:13to do. We're going to rehearse infiron. We've got a gig on the
- 9:18December fourteenth at Moe's on the Gold Coast and then or Burly Heads and then
- 9:26Friday at Kingsley in Brisbane and then Saturday at The Duke in Sydney and the
- 9:35Sunday at the Basement in Canberra and Monday at Shopkickers in Melbourne. So it's
- 9:39just an East Coast run at this point because we had to sort of squeeze
- 9:43it in before Christmas. Yeah, and what can fans expect from Palace the
- 9:46King on those shows, mate, Well, it's going to be a whole
- 9:50new thing because we've got a whole new album. So we're trying to learn
- 9:54the new songs as we see and the ones that feel best will put them
- 9:58in the set with a bunch of classics from the olds. I mean,
- 10:05we've got two EPs and three albums to draw from before this new album,
- 10:11so there's a lot of material. So I hope that people you come along
- 10:16and there's a song you want to hear from a classic Palace album over the
- 10:20last ten years, you know, by all means, give me a yell
- 10:24or send us a message and let us know if there's a song you really
- 10:26want to hear, and we'll do our best to do it at the gigs.
- 10:28But what you can expect is a full on, you know, hardcore
- 10:37bluesy rock band playing sort of you know, in a seventies slash current style.
- 10:43You know, it's lots of great musicianship. The boys are all amazing
- 10:46at their at their instruments, and I'll just get up the front and screen
- 10:54good. Thanks very much for your time to I've brot been a pleasure speaking
- 10:58with you. Tear it Down is out Rinds of Low Places out December fourth,
- 11:01the eighth, and the troll kicks off around say Tim saying good amongst
- 11:05it. Yeah, thank you night. Thanks for having us, and thanks
- 11:07for the support. We really appreciate it. I'm sending you that's up your
