- 0:02We have a strong bias in favor of accepting things that we can
- 0:05perceive with our physical senses, and we tend to
- 0:09disbelieve or discount anything that is not directly physically
- 0:13available to our experience. Yet if we reflect on the
- 0:18totality of our life experience, it becomes clear that there are
- 0:23many experiences innumerable forces and powers.
- 0:28That are not susceptible to direct sense perception, yet are
- 0:33able to be determined as real. We cannot see electricity or
- 0:38gravity, for instance, but we can experience their effects and
- 0:43we can measure their power and harness the effects.
- 0:48Similarly, there are many things which occur within us which
- 0:51cannot be perceived by the physical senses, yet are
- 0:55patently real to us. When we get a new idea or
- 1:00inspiration, when we experience an emotion, we sense them
- 1:05directly with the mind, not the external sense organs.
- 1:10They arise somehow from somewhere and thus imply a
- 1:15reality that is other than that of the physical world we are
- 1:18rooted in, whether in a state of dream or an out of body
- 1:23experience. Or some abstracted state of
- 1:27trance, or a mystical state of some sort.
- 1:30We experience things which are real and meaningful, yet which
- 1:35defy direct perception by the physical senses.
- 1:39How many times in our lives do we have such experiences and
- 1:44gain some new insight or understanding, yet discount the
- 1:48reality of those experiences in some way?
- 1:52Just as electricity and gravity can be known through their
- 1:56effects, such experiences also make themselves known through
- 2:01their effects, Sriorobindo observes Quote.
- 2:07The physical is not the only world.
- 2:09There are others that we become aware of through dream records,
- 2:13through the subtle senses, through influences and contacts,
- 2:18through imagination, intuition, and vision.
- 2:22There are worlds of a larger, subtler life than ours.
- 2:25Vital worlds, worlds in which mind builds its own forms and
- 2:30figures, mental worlds, psychic worlds which are the souls,
- 2:34home, others above, with which we have little contact.
- 2:39In each of us there is a mental plane of consciousness, A
- 2:44psychic, A vital, A subtle physical, as well as the gross
- 2:49physical and material plane. The same planes are repeated in
- 2:54the consciousness of general nature.
- 2:57It is when we enter into or contact these other planes that
- 3:02we come into connection with the worlds above the physical.
- 3:07In sleep we leave the physical body only a subconscient residue
- 3:12remaining, and enter all planes and all sorts of worlds.
- 3:17In each we see scenes. Meet beings share in happenings,
- 3:23come across formations, influences, suggestions which
- 3:28belong to these planes. Even when we are awake, part of
- 3:33us moves in these planes, but their activity goes on behind
- 3:37the veil. Our waking minds are not aware
- 3:41of it. End Quote Reference Sriorobindo
