- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew McGivern for October 7th.
- 0:12Today is You are Beautiful day and if you're rolling your eyes
- 0:17thinking this is just another feel good holiday with no
- 0:20substance, hear me out. Its observance was created to
- 0:24combat that constant stream of negative self talk and
- 0:27unrealistic beauty standards bombard us daily through media,
- 0:31advertising and social comparison.
- 0:34You Are a Beautiful Day encourages people to recognize
- 0:37and celebrate their unique beauty.
- 0:40Not that filtered, photoshopped, culturally dictated version of
- 0:43beauty, but authentic beauty that comes from being genuinely
- 0:48yourself. This day promotes positive body
- 0:52image, self acceptance, and the radical idea that beauty isn't
- 0:56something to achieve or attain, it's something you've already
- 1:00possess. What makes This Day meaningful
- 1:03is its counterculture message In a world that profits from making
- 1:08us feel inadequate, You Are Beautiful Day is a gentle
- 1:13rebellion, a reminder that you don't need to change, improve,
- 1:18or fix yourself to be worthy of love and appreciation.
- 1:23Today's quote comes from author and activist Audrey Lord, who
- 1:28once said if I didn't define myself for myself, I would be
- 1:34crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten
- 1:38alive. Lord's powerful statement
- 1:42captures exactly what you are Beautiful Day is fighting
- 1:45against. When we allow others, whether
- 1:49it's advertisers, social media influencers, magazine editors,
- 1:53or even well meaning friends and family, to define our beauty and
- 1:58worth, we lose something essential.
- 2:02We become smaller, diminished, crunched into shapes that don't
- 2:07fit who we actually are. Think about how much mental
- 2:11energy we spend comparing ourselves to impossible
- 2:14standards. How much time we waste wishing
- 2:19we looked different, younger, thinner, taller, different, and
- 2:25countless ways. This isn't accidental.
- 2:29Entire industries depend on keeping us dissatisfied with
- 2:33ourselves, so we'll keep buying products that are promising
- 2:38transformation. Lord understood that self
- 2:41definition is an act of resistance and survival.
- 2:45When you define yourself. When you decide that you are
- 2:49beautiful not despite your perceived flaws, but including
- 2:54them, you reclaim power that others have tried to take away
- 2:58from you. You step out of the fantasy that
- 3:02others have constructed and into your own authentic reality.
- 3:07You Are a Beautiful Day asks us to practice what Lord preached
- 3:11to define ourselves or ourselves, to recognize that
- 3:16beauty is diverse, subjective, and already present in each of
- 3:20us. As you head into your day,
- 3:22embrace the spirit of You Are a Beautiful Day and Lord's wisdom
- 3:26about self definition. Look in the mirror today in
- 3:30practice defining yourself for yourself, not according to
- 3:33magazine, social media, or cultural beauty standards.
- 3:37Maybe it's noticing something about your appearance you
- 3:40usually criticize and choosing to see it differently.
- 3:44Maybe it's complimenting yourself the way you would
- 3:46compliment a friend. Maybe it's simply acknowledging
- 3:50that you are enough, exactly as you are right now.
- 3:56Beauty isn't something you need to earn or achieve.
- 3:59It's already yours. The only question is whether
- 4:02you'll claim it for yourself or let others define it away from
- 4:05you. That's going to do it for today.
- 4:09Thanks for listening. I'm Anna Mcgibbon, signing off
- 4:12for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:18Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
