Wichita’s northeast neighborhood around 29th and Grove is finally getting serious cleanup after decades of hidden contamination from a 1970s railroad spill. Union Pacific, working since 2005, now has KDHE’s approval to expand groundwater treatment facilities—adding two new sites and upgrading the existing one—to protect residents long-term. The city council greenlit the expansion last fall, and construction bids are soon to follow.
