- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald, brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 0:02Speaker 1: Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight. Start with a job
- 0:05Speaker 1: and with a career. We bring in Jeff Legwald for
- 0:10Speaker 1: a bouquet of football information after Super Bowl licks. Leggy,
- 0:14Speaker 1: how you doing, man?
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'm good. How are you guys?
- 0:16Speaker 1: We're doing great, Leggy? Is it just so simple as
- 0:20Speaker 1: Vic Fangio just had better dudes than the Chiefs had.
- 0:23Speaker 1: How they get it done?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Well, it's you know, it's the same age old story
- 0:29Speaker 2: of simple as complex sometimes. But they played a very
- 0:34Speaker 2: simple schematically you know, quarters coverage, four man rush. I
- 0:39Speaker 2: mean it's classic Vic fangiou. And you know we said
- 0:44Speaker 2: on Friday, both teams had offensive line issues in whichever
- 0:49Speaker 2: team dealt with them the best, uh would have a
- 0:52Speaker 2: better day. And the Chiefs did not deal with their
- 0:55Speaker 2: offensive line issues. And the e they very counted goals,
- 1:00Speaker 2: took took advantage of it. And and you know, Fanjo
- 1:05Speaker 2: didn't didn't deter from the from the plan and didn't
- 1:08Speaker 2: have to. And they had maybe the toughest thing to do.
- 1:13Speaker 2: They had Mahomes second guessing reads against very simple coverages.
- 1:20Speaker 2: When you look at the coaches copies or the end
- 1:23Speaker 2: zone views. Uh, he's got open receivers, but no time
- 1:27Speaker 2: to get him the ball. So it was a classic
- 1:31Speaker 2: Fangio game plan. And you know, I traded text with
- 1:34Speaker 2: Vic this morning and he's obviously very happy it worked out.
- 1:38Speaker 2: But he was very complimentary of of his players.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, and his players, they just they flat out one
- 1:44Speaker 1: like he said, can my four beat year five? And
- 1:47Speaker 1: and they did? And can my seven cover your? Uh
- 1:50Speaker 1: your five that are that are in the play? Yes
- 1:53Speaker 1: they can.
- 1:54Speaker 2: So.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Looking at Kansas City, Tooney's a great player, but he
- 1:57Speaker 1: was playing on a position uh Kelly and obviously not
- 2:00Speaker 1: the answer at left guard, Greed Humphrey's very good, Juwan Taylor.
- 2:04Speaker 1: They've got to be able to do better than that
- 2:06Speaker 1: at right tackle. The offensive line upgrades. How quickly can
- 2:10Speaker 1: Brett Beach in Kansas City get this done?
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well, they've been putting it off for a couple of
- 2:15Speaker 2: years now, and they've gotten away with it, frankly because
- 2:18Speaker 2: the quarterback is so good. Yeah, and you know eventually,
- 2:23Speaker 2: you know, like, oh great, this doesn't less than anything
- 2:27Speaker 2: the Chiefs have done. I don't like the narrative that
- 2:29Speaker 2: they suddenly go to the back of the train. Now
- 2:32Speaker 2: you know that they're the thirty second best place.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Oh lady, I've been I've been waiting through the through
- 2:37Speaker 1: the two MVPs and the three Super Bowl MVPs to
- 2:40Speaker 1: finally have my mahomes as a fraud take.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Validating, and I'm ready for them to go to the
- 2:44Speaker 3: back of the train. Legate.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I feel pretty good about it today.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, no, good, good job, but no, it's you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: they've put this off for two years and I think sometimes,
- 2:55Speaker 2: in all my years doing this, I'm I'm fascinated how
- 2:58Speaker 2: many times very good teams championship teams. And we saw
- 3:03Speaker 2: with Brady a lot too in New England is that
- 3:06Speaker 2: teams do not protect their greatest investment with the zeal
- 3:11Speaker 2: they pursue a wide receiver or you know, a running
- 3:15Speaker 2: I just will never understand it. It's like they bow
- 3:18Speaker 2: to the public opinion that taking a tackle or spending
- 3:22Speaker 2: money on a tackle isn't sexy, and well this is
- 3:26Speaker 2: what it looks like when you don't. So either get
- 3:29Speaker 2: used to that or spend the resources you need to
- 3:34Speaker 2: to protect your greatest resource, which is the best quarterback
- 3:38Speaker 2: in today's era.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Okay, so I'm with you. Nobody in this room, I
- 3:42Speaker 3: think believes that the Chiefs dynasty has just abruptly ended.
- 3:46Speaker 3: But doesn't it feel like they've got more to do overall,
- 3:49Speaker 3: not just on the offensive line. They've got three free
- 3:52Speaker 3: agent wide receivers. You're going to make a decision on Kelsey,
- 3:55Speaker 3: you know, it feels like they do have more work
- 3:58Speaker 3: to do to get back to where they've been this
- 4:00Speaker 3: offseason than past years. Is that fair?
- 4:03Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah? I mean Andy, it's like all good erosion
- 4:06Speaker 2: gets you eventually. In the NFL, the salary cap demands it,
- 4:11Speaker 2: h age demands it. I mean, there's I don't think
- 4:13Speaker 2: there's a sport we follow anyone follows as passionately as
- 4:18Speaker 2: people do the NFL. Or the the healthy window of players,
- 4:23Speaker 2: it's so small. I mean, you're even the healthiest of
- 4:27Speaker 2: players is you know, is going to be caught by
- 4:31Speaker 2: by time. And that's what we're seeing. I mean, Kelsey
- 4:36Speaker 2: didn't look like the same player last night he he has,
- 4:39Speaker 2: you know, five years ago, because you're not going to
- 4:41Speaker 2: look like that. And then you take all the departures.
- 4:46Speaker 2: When you're a very good team and you've won as
- 4:48Speaker 2: much as they have, like all very good teams, you're
- 4:51Speaker 2: going to have more departures than arrivals. And that's that's
- 4:55Speaker 2: often the case you know of of prominent players, of
- 5:00Speaker 2: key players, and that's why the draft is so important.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I mean, we're celebrating the Eagles, but yet another draft
- 5:07Speaker 2: built team put over the top by smart free agency decisions.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah. No, they They've done a wonderful job and now
- 5:15Speaker 1: some of their guys start to become available. Let's talk
- 5:19Speaker 1: about Zach Bond first, Leggie, what what does the market
- 5:23Speaker 1: look like for Zach Bond? Like, you know, I don't
- 5:26Speaker 1: think he's getting Rokwan Smith or Fred Warner money, but
- 5:29Speaker 1: I think he's got an opportunity to do quite well
- 5:32Speaker 1: for himself. Could you see George and Sean saying let's
- 5:36Speaker 1: invest it inside linebacker? Given Bond's history with Peyton.
- 5:41Speaker 2: You know, I think I never say never with any
- 5:44Speaker 2: player with a history with Peyton for one. And you know,
- 5:49Speaker 2: I don't think price tag will influence this group of Broncos,
- 5:54Speaker 2: you know, and in anything they do moving forward, if
- 5:59Speaker 2: they want somebody, they're going to do what they want
- 6:01Speaker 2: to to get him, i'd give from a ten thousand
- 6:04Speaker 2: foot view, your only question with him is he never
- 6:09Speaker 2: started more than six games before this season. Yeah, so
- 6:13Speaker 2: you have to decide what he really might be moving forward.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And he's really the size of what a big safety
- 6:22Speaker 2: used to be. So does that fix the Broncos problems
- 6:26Speaker 2: of needing more physicality in the middle of the field.
- 6:29Speaker 2: You know, he I think he played He probably played
- 6:32Speaker 2: closer to two twenty five to twenty three this year.
- 6:37Speaker 2: That's a big safety in the eighties. So, I mean
- 6:39Speaker 2: you got to decide does he fix your problems? And
- 6:42Speaker 2: what he was this year with Dick Fangio? Could he
- 6:46Speaker 2: be that in a very different scheme?
- 6:49Speaker 3: You run here, all right, what about a Deebo Samuel,
- 6:53Speaker 3: He's become the new hot name. He's allowed to seek
- 6:55Speaker 3: a trade Nate and I just played the audio where
- 6:58Speaker 3: he's on a podcast or whatever, and he's talking about
- 7:00Speaker 3: Denver is an up and coming team, Sean's looking for
- 7:04Speaker 3: a joker. What about that marriage? Did that be something
- 7:07Speaker 3: you think they kicked the tires on.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Well, his deal is a little weird because the the
- 7:14Speaker 2: cap hit changes drastically, you know, depending on when you
- 7:19Speaker 2: do it. And he's got four voidable years already on
- 7:25Speaker 2: the end of his contract. That would that would cause
- 7:28Speaker 2: debt money for the team acquiring him, I believe, so don't.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I don't exactly know all of the salary cap dynamics
- 7:38Speaker 2: for him in a trade because the contract comes with you. Now,
- 7:42Speaker 2: if the forty nine ers are responsible for all that
- 7:45Speaker 2: the voidable year stuff, then it's a pretty economical set
- 7:51Speaker 2: in terms of salary cap. The question is are you gonna,
- 7:55Speaker 2: you know, where do you come down on how much
- 7:57Speaker 2: should you give up to get him? Because he's never
- 8:01Speaker 2: not once played every game in a season.
- 8:03Speaker 3: All right, so help me out here, because I've got
- 8:05Speaker 3: it pulled up and it looked like a palatable head
- 8:08Speaker 3: at seventeen million, seventeen and a half million for next year.
- 8:11Speaker 3: But like you're talking about their voidable years at four million,
- 8:14Speaker 3: four well it's pretty much five million, five million, three million,
- 8:17Speaker 3: three million. You're saying that the Niners who try to
- 8:20Speaker 3: trade those voidable years to the team acquiring him.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know the dynamic because traditionally you get
- 8:30Speaker 2: the contract as it exists. So that's the technicality. I
- 8:36Speaker 2: don't you know. I wasn't at law school the day
- 8:38Speaker 2: they taught law, So uh, it's what happens to those
- 8:43Speaker 2: four voidable years. I think would impact any team, not
- 8:46Speaker 2: just the Broncos. But you know, if the forty nine
- 8:48Speaker 2: ers are responsible for those and that's the dead money
- 8:51Speaker 2: and all of that, then that's a that's a totally
- 8:53Speaker 2: different conversation. And he does certainly he could do lots
- 8:58Speaker 2: of things for the Broncos, like a lot of guys
- 9:01Speaker 2: in this free agency class. You know, if I'm going
- 9:04Speaker 2: to pay top dollar, I want guys who are on
- 9:07Speaker 2: the field all the time. Yeah, and he's ever played
- 9:10Speaker 2: every game of the season.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Talking to Jeff Legwald here, Leggy, maybe a bigger picture
- 9:16Speaker 1: question right here is did yesterday's result, or the the
- 9:23Speaker 1: exposing of the Chiefs that happened at the hands of
- 9:25Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday, if you want to call it
- 9:28Speaker 1: such a thing, did that impact the off season plans
- 9:34Speaker 1: aggressiveness of any other franchises in the AFC. You know,
- 9:39Speaker 1: obviously Buffalo and Baltimore and Cincinnati they got their guy,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and those teams are locked and loaded and ready to go.
- 9:45Speaker 1: But for for example, for a couple of teams like
- 9:48Speaker 1: the Chargers and the Denver Broncos, does that make them
- 9:52Speaker 1: view this as Hey, maybe the Chiefs are more vulnerable
- 9:55Speaker 1: than we realized.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Well, I don't think it should take away that you
- 10:02Speaker 2: need a pretty damn well built team to beat him, right,
- 10:05Speaker 2: you know we're not The Eagles aren't just a team
- 10:08Speaker 2: that got left. That's a well built team.
- 10:10Speaker 1: HOWI Roseman's got to go to the Hall of Fame.
- 10:13Speaker 2: That's a talented team. And again, I hate to keep
- 10:17Speaker 2: saying it that I've I saw how they did business
- 10:20Speaker 2: with the New Orleans Saints for a long time. We're
- 10:23Speaker 2: talking about two draft built teams in the Super Bowl,
- 10:27Speaker 2: and you know, we can all get excited about free
- 10:30Speaker 2: agency and trades or whatever, but the bulk of your
- 10:33Speaker 2: team better be your own guys or you're never gonna
- 10:36Speaker 2: pull it off. And that's the lesson to me you
- 10:40Speaker 2: should take away because if your plan is our quarterback
- 10:43Speaker 2: will play better than him, and Jalen Hurts did play
- 10:49Speaker 2: better than him yesterday, but Jalen Hurts did it with
- 10:52Speaker 2: a much better team around him. So when he had
- 10:55Speaker 2: the day of his life, they want they want a trophy,
- 10:59Speaker 2: all right.
- 11:00Speaker 3: It was interesting because I know Ryan Clark made the
- 11:02Speaker 3: statement on Sports Center today, thinks this is the start
- 11:05Speaker 3: of a Hall of Fame career for Jalen Hurts. How
- 11:08Speaker 3: do you think history now remembers Jalen? I mean, what
- 11:10Speaker 3: I think is wild as that we've got that statement
- 11:12Speaker 3: coming out on TV. Jalen played great yesterday, no doubt
- 11:15Speaker 3: about it. He had a very good playoff run. But
- 11:18Speaker 3: there were questions towards the end of the year, both
- 11:20Speaker 3: last year and even some this year about what's going
- 11:22Speaker 3: on with the Eagles passing game? Why is it right
- 11:24Speaker 3: AJ Brown's getting upset? What do you make of this
- 11:28Speaker 3: kind of wild little turn in the Jalen Hurts story.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Well, it's never been a wild turn for may. I
- 11:35Speaker 2: liked him coming into the league. I've liked his composure,
- 11:38Speaker 2: I like his attitude. Everyone I know who has been
- 11:43Speaker 2: around him and been a teammate or coached him, Everybody
- 11:47Speaker 2: I know who's been in that position, can't say enough
- 11:50Speaker 2: good things about the guy. So it's not been a
- 11:53Speaker 2: narrative for me. But overall, you should never listen to
- 11:57Speaker 2: what receivers say. They're always unhappy, and to me, that's
- 12:03Speaker 2: not a gauge of where things are for a guy
- 12:06Speaker 2: in his career, you know. I mean Aj Brown was
- 12:10Speaker 2: complaining to the head coach during the game and they're
- 12:13Speaker 2: up like twenty, so you know, do you want to
- 12:17Speaker 2: win or do you want the ball all the time?
- 12:19Speaker 2: And you know whatever, But I mean receivers. Griping is
- 12:24Speaker 2: as old as time itself in football. But I think
- 12:28Speaker 2: hurts anytime he went at the trophy. You know, people
- 12:33Speaker 2: can say whatever they want about you now, but they
- 12:36Speaker 2: can't take your ring away from you. And I think
- 12:41Speaker 2: it only helps him. And I think he's still got
- 12:43Speaker 2: tons of great football ahead of him because he plays
- 12:47Speaker 2: for an organization that obviously knows how to build a
- 12:51Speaker 2: team because they were back again, you know, after a disappointment,
- 12:56Speaker 2: they built a better team and won. All right.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I got one of our Texters asses and I thought
- 13:02Speaker 3: the same thing last night.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Is that the.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Earliest gatorade shower we've seen in a while. It was,
- 13:08Speaker 3: it was it was not going to affect things, But
- 13:11Speaker 3: I was like, that feels a little early to be
- 13:13Speaker 3: doubtsing the man I was.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I told that coach I know who texted me right
- 13:19Speaker 2: after it that you have to take all of the
- 13:23Speaker 2: things that were going on. Kenny Pickett's in the game. Yeah, yeah, quarterback.
- 13:28Speaker 2: They have backups all over the place on the field,
- 13:33Speaker 2: and the gatorade shower all before like the three minute mark.
- 13:39Speaker 2: I mean that is that's an epic. That's if you
- 13:43Speaker 2: look up beatdown in the dictionary, those three pictures are
- 13:46Speaker 2: right there.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a thirty four to nothing game, forty
- 13:51Speaker 1: to twenty two, but we know it wasn't even actually
- 13:53Speaker 1: that close. Hell, Kelsey didn't even have his first catch
- 13:56Speaker 1: in that game until the third quarter. He was completely
- 13:58Speaker 1: taken out of things. Eagles smacked him pretty good. Jeff Legwald, everybody,
- 14:03Speaker 1: ESPN read his stuff right there, Jeff Legwald, brought to
- 14:07Speaker 1: you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local
- 14:10Speaker 1: sixty eight. Start with a job and with a career,
- 14:12Speaker 1: Jeff leg waldwill done as always.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Man, Thanks Pollas. Let's see it
