Transcript
- 0:04Hey guys, it's July 8th and I got Parrish up here.
- 0:07He's host and I'm co-host.
- 0:09And today is freedom that opens outward.
- 0:13The stone.
- 0:14Freedom grows when I move out of myself and toward God and others.
- 0:20Ripple One Practical.
- 0:21Today I will look for ways to be useful instead of self-focused.
- 0:26I will not stay trapped in my own thoughts and concerns.
- 0:29Even small acts of service help shift my perspective and bring clarity.
- 0:35Ripple to spiritual.
- 0:37The Father works in me through humility.
- 0:39Jesus shows me a life poured out of others for others.
- 0:44The Holy Spirit helps me step aside outside of myself and live with purpose.
- 0:49As I surrender what blocks me, I find a deeper freedom,
- 0:55One that allows me to live clean, useful, and at peace in God's hands.
- 1:01When I read this, I think about what is of use in God's hands and all this stuff.
- 1:08And on page 124 of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, it says,
- 1:14Henry Ford once made a wise remark to the effect that experience is the thing of supreme value in life.
- 1:22that is truly only if one is willing to turn the past to good account.
- 1:28We grow by our willingness to face and rectify errors and convert them into assets.
- 1:35The alcoholic's past thus becomes the principal asset of the family,
- 1:40and frequently it is almost the only one.
- 1:44A little bit down in that paragraph, it says,
- 1:46Clean to the thought that in God's hands the dark past is the greatest possession you have.
- 1:51The key, I think key's a big word, right?
- 1:54That's an important thing.
- 1:56The key to life and happiness for others.
- 1:59With it, you can avert death and misery for them.
- 2:02So when I think about that and I think about my life today,
- 2:07I might have talked a little bit about this before,
- 2:09but my dad, man, he was a good dude.
- 2:12Like, you know, I never heard a bad thing talked about my dad.
- 2:18Besides for me, when I was trying to, you know, present something to somebody and make
- 2:21him look bad because I wouldn't want to look bad myself, but it was always me.
- 2:26And so I think about that.
- 2:27And, you know, my dad had a very, uh, he helped a lot of people in his life and didn't have
- 2:32to go through these tragic things and all these, you know, hurt all these people and be this
- 2:38person.
- 2:39But for me, man, you know, I, I, I came to this place and, you know, I had, I did that
- 2:44stuff.
- 2:44But God put me in a position to be able to be in service to other people through all the things I put myself through that were self-made.
- 2:53I did that.
- 2:55And so on page 18, it kind of reflects that as well.
- 2:59It says, and this is like in special letters too, right?
- 3:02The squiggly letters.
- 3:04It says, but the ex-problem drinker.
- 3:06So I'm not a problem drinker anymore.
- 3:08And I think it might hurt some people's feelings, but it says ex-problem drinker, right?
- 3:13Because everybody's like, I'm a bad guy.
- 3:15Anyways.
- 3:16But anyways, who has found this solution,
- 3:19who is promptly armed with facts about himself.
- 3:21Why am I promptly armed with facts about myself?
- 3:24Probably because I went through this work.
- 3:27Can generally win the entire confidence of another alcoholic in a few hours.
- 3:31That's a long time.
- 3:33A few hours?
- 3:34Man, you give me 10, 20 minutes with a dude,
- 3:37and, you know, man, we come to some understanding
- 3:39that I know what I'm talking about.
- 3:42Until such an understanding is reached, little or nothing can be accomplished.
- 3:46And I think the next sentence is important, too, because it talks about this love and how we be of service.
- 3:50That the man who's making the approach, so I'm making the approach, has had the same difficulty in that he obviously knows what he is talking about.
- 3:59That his whole department shouts to the new prospect that he is a man with a real answer.
- 4:03I didn't think I was supposed to have any answers.
- 4:06That he has no attitude of holier than thou, nothing whatever except the sincere desire to be helpful.
- 4:12That there are no fees to pay, no access to grind, no people to please.
- 4:17And I'm not here to please people, man.
- 4:20I'm here to help God's kids.
- 4:22No lectures to be endured.
- 4:23And maybe sometimes I come off as a lecturer because I'm reading out of the book so much, but I'm not trying to be because I found this is where the answer is, Paris.
- 4:31These are the conditions we found most effective.
- 4:35After such an approach, here's that word again.
- 4:38I have in one of my books, everywhere it says approach, I have highlighted in orange.
- 4:43After such an approach, many may take up their beds and walk again.
- 4:47That's a lot of cool stuff.
- 4:49But anyways, when I was reading that and thinking about how it could be useful, and that's how
- 4:55I can be useful, and that's the, you know, it talks about, you know, that's in the fifth
- 4:59tradition as well, to carry this message to the alcoholic who still suffers, right?
- 5:04And I'm best useful where I've been down in.
- 5:07I can't go evangelize the whole world,
- 5:10but I can help a dude that has an ankle monitor on
- 5:14and that has 15 felonies racked up
- 5:17and that's I've been where he's been.
- 5:19But I'm not going to be useful to the dude that robbed a bank
- 5:23because I've never robbed a bank before, Paris.
- 5:26I got something on there, man.
- 5:28You talk about being useful.
- 5:32You know, on page 15, you know, I like page 15 as well because it talks about their usefulness to others.
- 5:40You know, it says, but I soon found that when all other measures fail, work with another alcoholic, what's said today?
- 5:47And you talk about approaching, you know.
- 5:51I'd have been in the times, I remember the times where I was down and I was feeling sad and everything like that.
- 5:57But I call you, I call someone, and we read a couple words in this book of AA,
- 6:03and it's like, man, you get a sense of feeling different.
- 6:07And it keeps talking about this on even working with others.
- 6:12On page 89, it says,
- 6:13Life will take on new meanings to watch people recover, to see them help others,
- 6:18to watch loneliness vanish, and to see a fellowship grow about you,
- 6:23to have a host of friends.
- 6:25This and this fear is you must not miss.
- 6:27and when I was reading it,
- 6:29you know, and I think I heard you say
- 6:31something about me being a host and you co-host
- 6:33and all that, and I was like, huh?
- 6:35You know, it didn't make any sense, but
- 6:37you know, just to piggyback on it.
- 6:39I was like, okay, you know, that's the
- 6:41type of love that we have for one
- 6:43another, not to step on no one's toes.
- 6:45Not to over try to
- 6:47do the things that, you know, we
- 6:49normally used to do.
- 6:51Oh, who can get drunker? Who can get more
- 6:53messed up? You know what I mean? Drunker,
- 6:55is that a word? I believe that's a word.
- 6:57But anyway, we get these things of the ego and their pride, and it talks about the pride again.
- 7:04I like going back toward the pride.
- 7:06You talk about talking out the book a lot.
- 7:08I think you got me on it too, man.
- 7:10You're not the only one.
- 7:11See, when I was looking at that on the practical part, I would not stay struck in my own thoughts and concerns.
- 7:20See, that's the thing that I used to do back in the day.
- 7:23I used to let my thoughts hold me down.
- 7:25Oh, now what meditation has done is let me sit down and be still so I can sit in that peace.
- 7:33And when I sit in that peace today, I understand that, okay, working on your breathing, working on your mind, you know.
- 7:41So when things do creep up, because they say it's not if, it's when.
- 7:45You know, see, we go through this thing day to day and the part called life.
- 7:50You know what I mean?
- 7:50Like life still happens to us all.
- 7:54You know, you're still going to have death in the family.
- 7:56You're still going to have people around you that cut you out.
- 7:59You know, you might get in the car somebody to cut you off.
- 8:03But your reactions is what will dictate it.
- 8:07You know, see how I react to things now than what I used to?
- 8:11I used to get mad.
- 8:12I had a story one time about, you know, I was staying with my mom and dad, right?
- 8:19And I got mad because they smoked in the house.
- 8:22So when I came downstairs, I'm going to tell them to stop smoking in the house.
- 8:26But this is their house, right?
- 8:28So who am I to go down there and tell them what to do in their own place?
- 8:32See, that's the thing that's now that I have to practice in everything else.
- 8:39But, yeah, what you got else?
- 8:40You got spiritual?
- 8:41Man, I think that when it says on the practical,
- 8:46It says, even small acts of service help shift my perspective and bring clarity.
- 8:56And I think it's interesting, you know, in the fourth step and on to this book,
- 9:01but there's some important things.
- 9:03Like on page 67, it tells me, when a person offended, we said to ourselves,
- 9:08this is a sick man, how can I be helpful to him?
- 9:11So that's an act of love.
- 9:13God saved me from being angry.
- 9:14So I brought God into it and I'm showing love.
- 9:17Well, on page 68, we talked about it not too long ago.
- 9:23We ask him to remove our fear and direct our attention to what he would have us be.
- 9:27I would imagine God would have me be a service and love.
- 9:30And then on page 70, so these are the three points of the fourth step, right, Paris?
- 9:35It says, if sex is very troublesome, we throw ourselves the harder into helping others.
- 9:40We think of their needs and work for them.
- 9:42Maybe that's showing love too.
- 9:44So, you know, when I think about that and I'd hop over to page 84, and I like this connection because on page 84, when we continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear, and when these crop up, we ask God to remove them, just like we did over there and that.
- 9:59And then we discuss them with someone immediately.
- 10:01And I've never looked at it in this position, but, you know, me and my buddy were talking about this.
- 10:05He said, well, maybe discuss them with someone immediately.
- 10:08Maybe I just need to pick up the phone and talk to someone.
- 10:11Because I don't even like to.
- 10:13I would rather call you and check on you versus me call you and tell you about all my problems
- 10:20and then call someone else and can make it bigger.
- 10:23So anyways, and then make amends quickly if we've harmed anyone.
- 10:26Then we resolutely, with determination, that's what the definition of resolutely means,
- 10:31turn our thoughts to someone we can help.
- 10:33The next one, so that's fourth.
- 10:35Love and tolerance of others is our code.
- 10:38and we have ceased finding anything or anyone, even alcohol.
- 10:41So if I'm practicing all six of those things in a very good manner,
- 10:45man, that'd be crazy for me to be coming back and saying,
- 10:50well, you know, I'm just, I've just been in this recovery thing
- 10:54and I do these things to people, but I make amends after.
- 10:59No, and I've heard that.
- 11:00And I'm like, man, like, and I hear stuff about the isms.
- 11:03Man, you know, that's cool.
- 11:05If I need a reason to treat people poorly and an excuse, that's okay.
- 11:13But, you know, my sponsor tells me that I need to, you know,
- 11:16why don't you just act like a good person and treat people with respect, Corey?
- 11:21And I try to do that.
- 11:22I don't always succeed, but I try.
- 11:25And, man, you know, when I try to do these things and ask God to come into them,
- 11:28for some reason, my life's a little bit easier to do.
- 11:32Yeah.
- 11:33But anyway.
- 11:33That's true.
- 11:34But that's the thing about it, you know, when it talks about that word humility and Jesus shows me a life poured out for others, you know.
- 11:45Man, doing this thing, you know, it's a, I like on page 85 where it talks about, you know, the temp that we record from as a hot flame, you know.
- 11:59And with that, you know, with the temperament from the hot flame, it goes back on page 24, and it talks about it again, where it said there is a complete failure of this kind of defense that keeps one from putting his hands on the hot stove.
- 12:14See, when I had to learn that this was a disease for me, and when I really had to take step one, 100%, you know, with step one taking 100% meaning that this is, I am an alcoholic.
- 12:30I was talking with my friend yesterday, and she was telling me, she was like, oh, you're not an alcoholic.
- 12:36I'm like, okay, is your car in the lake?
- 12:40You know what I mean?
- 12:42Do you drink till you get oblivious?
- 12:44No, I can stop.
- 12:46Okay, then.
- 12:47See, the people of Alcoholics Anonymous,
- 12:50well, I ain't gonna say the people of Alcoholics Anonymous,
- 12:52it's other people look at us as,
- 12:56oh, an alcoholic is someone who drinks all day,
- 12:59wake up in the morning and drink.
- 13:00No, that's not the point of Ben.
- 13:02Yes, that's an alcoholic too,
- 13:03But when you can't control your decision-making and you run your life on self-will, that's when you know something's wrong.
- 13:12Or I want to end up in this conversation with you today.
- 13:15Right.
- 13:16Well, you know, since we're on the subject, I'm going to talk about it because I have some thoughts about this.
- 13:23You know, this book, Alons and Away, tells me, you know, I would say 17 through 20 war in the Big Bang.
- 13:2973, 23, I'm sorry.
- 13:31And the big bull gives me exactly what happens when I take a drink of alcohol.
- 13:37Yeah.
- 13:38Right?
- 13:39And the reason is, it's because the physical nature of that.
- 13:41Yeah.
- 13:41The physical nature says, when I take a drink, I want more.
- 13:44And that's what separates me from someone out there, right?
- 13:47But you know what?
- 13:48When me and you do crack together, guess what happens?
- 13:51We get high the same way.
- 13:52Yeah.
- 13:52Nothing's different.
- 13:53Yeah.
- 13:54And so I think it's an interesting thing because, you know, we get this thing in our head that
- 13:59up in about, oh, we're all the same.
- 14:04Well, you know, a bank robber, I've never robbed a bank.
- 14:08I can't take him through the 12 steps of alcohol or the 12 steps of the recovery room I'm in.
- 14:13But I will tell you this, you know, when I take a drink, I want more.
- 14:18Yeah.
- 14:19That's the one thing.
- 14:20The middle side, right?
- 14:22That's another, that's another quality to have.
- 14:25When I get out of certain situations, I still drink after any amount of period.
- 14:29I mean, and more about alcoholism than the chapter, it's a great example.
- 14:34A man of 30 was doing some spree drinking, right?
- 14:38And then, man, he didn't drink for 25, he bone-dried for 25 years.
- 14:46And then he retired at 55 years of age.
- 14:50Then it goes on to say he drank, you know, anyways,
- 14:54that his long period of sobriety and self-discipline qualified him to drink his other men.
- 15:00Then he decided, you know, out came his carpet slippers and a bottle.
- 15:04In two months, he was in a hospital, puzzled and humiliated.
- 15:08He tried to regulate his drinking, just like I've tried to regulate my resentments
- 15:12and all this other stuff, right?
- 15:13It never worked.
- 15:16But after making several trips to the hospital, meantime,
- 15:20then gathering all his forces, he attempted to stop altogether.
- 15:23He found he could not.
- 15:24Could not's a big word in this book.
- 15:26Every means of solving his problem, which money could buy, was at his disposal.
- 15:32Human.
- 15:33I'm beyond human aid, right?
- 15:35That's kind of the same thing is that every attempt failed.
- 15:39Though a robust man at retirement, he went to pieces quickly and was dead within four years.
- 15:44So, you know, this thing that, you know, of being an alcoholic,
- 15:50and, you know, it's important to me when I'm taking a dude through this work because I do qualify that.
- 15:56And I'm not going to spend my time with somebody that is not warranted.
- 16:01Because, you know, man, I could be helping someone that is hopeless.
- 16:04Man, you know, and that's something that I do.
- 16:08And I help them figure out.
- 16:09I don't tell them, hey, I'm not working with, but I take them through this book.
- 16:13And it's important that the first 51 pages of this book talks about this.
- 16:18And then it says, leaving aside the dream question on page 51.
- 16:21So maybe 51 pages plus the doctor's opinion is very important to take someone through because they need to figure out if this is for them or not.
- 16:30Because then they might be in this position where they are in this deal that I'm in.
- 16:36And maybe that's not freedom for them.
- 16:39Maybe freedom looks like they just go do something else and be helpful to others and live away from.
- 16:46Because, I mean, did I, you know, my sponsor says it all the time, man.
- 16:49He didn't scratch off.
- 16:50He didn't get a scratch off ticket and come into the rooms of recovery.
- 16:54Right.
- 16:55You know, it's not.
- 16:57I think it's funny when we, you know, we're like, man, I wish everybody had this.
- 17:02Man, you like people say, man, everybody needs to work a 12 step recovery.
- 17:07Well, you know, that's crazy, Paris, because most people don't have to and they live by self-propulsion.
- 17:11Because they're normal people.
- 17:13Right.
- 17:13You know, when you become normal, it's something different.
- 17:16And you don't have to follow directions like that.
- 17:19They're already knowing how to follow directions.
- 17:21See, my mind, in your mind, we need some direction.
- 17:26What it says on page 85, interaction.
- 17:29It says, if we have carefully followed directions, we begin the sense of flow of his spirit into us.
- 17:35See, that's what I have to do today.
- 17:38I got to continue to follow directions, continue to do this work, because as soon as I get out on myself,
- 17:43As soon as I think, oh, I master this.
- 17:45Oh, I can beat this.
- 17:47Oh, I can have one drink.
- 17:48I can drink like a gentleman in the day.
- 17:50That's when that stuff creeps in.
- 17:52It might not creep in that day, but it's going to progress.
- 17:56Yeah, a dude I used to listen to, man, he used to talk about this,
- 17:59and he said, you know, all we have today is decisions to be made
- 18:05and commitments to be kept.
- 18:08And I've thought about that for some years.
- 18:10So I have decisions to be made.
- 18:12And, um, so if I make my decisions based around helping others and keep those commitments,
- 18:20that's interesting.
- 18:21Cause you know, but you know, back to your point, you know, the, the, the goodness gracious,
- 18:25the delusion that we are like other people are presently, maybe has to be smacked presently.
- 18:30Maybe has is right here right now with this right now.
- 18:33And I can never get out of that.
- 18:35Cause if I do and I have right.
- 18:37Because I got in the gym working out with these dudes that drank and had fun.
- 18:44And man, like, you know, the thing about that little dude, but I was disciplined.
- 18:48I had, you know, I had this, I had, you know, my mind, you know, it talks about cunning, baffling, powerful.
- 18:54And I know we are not on the topic, but this is a good topic to talk about because once I start thinking I'm like others.
- 19:00Yeah.
- 19:02I mean, my life, I believe it.
- 19:05And all I need now is come up with a good enough life for you to believe it
- 19:09so I can do what I want to successful.
- 19:12And that's been the great obsession of every abnormal drinker.
- 19:16That's what it talks about on page 30.
- 19:18We'll end this with a prayer.
- 19:20Father God, remove what blocks me from you today.
- 19:24Through your Holy Spirit, lead me out of myself
- 19:27and into a life of service and purpose.
- 19:30Shape me through the example of Jesus.
- 19:33And help me live as someone useful in your hands.
- 19:36Amen.
- 19:37Hold on.
