- 0:33Hamster with a blunt. Pen knife for doing quicker.
- 0:37Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt pen knife, the Doctor Who
- 0:43commentary podcast. That's how you do it boys.
- 0:45Hello, we are here today to watch and commentate on The
- 0:50Power of Crow Episode 4, an action-packed masterpiece.
- 0:54I'm here with podcaster extraordinaire Mr. Dylan Reece.
- 0:58Hello, Dylan. Hello, it's wonderful to be back
- 1:01here for the final part of the Power of.
- 1:06I'm quite sad actually. The last time you and me did a
- 1:08commentary together was on my sofa.
- 1:10That is true, we were snuggled up together, but now here we are
- 1:15divided by many a mile. Yeah, I've never been on your
- 1:19sofa. Well, yes, you're always
- 1:21invited. OK.
- 1:23It's quite far to come. Is it a casting couch, in fact?
- 1:27I promise you, you'll get the. A podcasting couch.
- 1:32Luke couldn't live further away from your sofa if you tried.
- 1:37A The hamstring spun penknife now has had over 120 guests and
- 1:42because of because of the couch, I also have 120 sex offensive
- 1:47allegations against me. That's 120 people with syphilis.
- 1:52Actually, if you've seen the state of most of the people on
- 1:54this, it's only 10. Well, you just heard the
- 1:57mellifluous voice there of Mr. Luke Malloy.
- 2:00Hello, Luke. Hello.
- 2:02Now I believe you've got that wretched tome.
- 2:05Mark Campbell's review book of Doctor Who in.
- 2:08Front of you. I think it's quite jokes, this
- 2:10book. What?
- 2:12It's that easy just to glance at it and see see what he says He.
- 2:15Gives Ghost light 15%. That's all I need to know.
- 2:19That the man's mad. Well.
- 2:21To be honest, it sounds like so far he's agreeing with
- 2:24everything we've said. Go on.
- 2:27So the verdict is the cast look board rigid, the direction is as
- 2:31flat as the horizon, and the story is uninspiring.
- 2:34But crawl looks good and the watery location is at least an
- 2:38attempt to do something different. 5 out of 10.
- 2:41I only don't think that the direction is that flat, I think
- 2:44the stuff on location is really good.
- 2:46We've not mentioned the direction really, but we have
- 2:48said the cast look bored, not the main cast.
- 2:51I think when the story moves as well, it's got some dynamism to
- 2:54it. Yeah, it's better than five out
- 2:5610. Mark at.
- 2:57Least 6. Yeah, 6.5, yeah.
- 3:02I heard you drown in Bakaki, Mark Campbell.
- 3:05Well, should we go into Episode 4?
- 3:07And as we start, I've got a question to ask a pair of you.
- 3:10All right, one counters in. 321. Like why are you always ready
- 3:19like within half a second? We said we were going to blast 3
- 3:23crawls. That's what we're doing.
- 3:25I think we've done pretty well. In fact, it's astonishing that
- 3:28nobody does that. Usually Doctor Who stories end
- 3:30with an explosion. This one doesn't.
- 3:32No. Can do if you want.
- 3:35What are you? What are you going to do?
- 3:38I wonder whether they couldn't afford to make Crawl explode.
- 3:42Oh look, the same way they could with the Chronoid, you mean?
- 3:44Oh yeah. Yeah, fair.
- 3:46They look fabulous. Now my question to you is this.
- 3:49I would like the pair of you please to rank the key to time
- 3:53season for me. Let's start with Dylan.
- 3:57Ribos Operation Tara. Stones of Blood.
- 4:02Pirate Planet Crawl. Armageddon Factor.
- 4:06Luke. Tara, Stones of Blood.
- 4:10Pirate Planet Crawl, Rebus. Armageddon Factor.
- 4:16And mine is Rebus, Operation Tara, Pirate Planet, Stones of
- 4:24Blood, Crow, Armageddon Factor. So, I mean, Rebus has just got
- 4:31that bit where the doctor slaps Van, whatever he's called with
- 4:35the glove. That is amazing.
- 4:37The graph. The graph in decay, yes.
- 4:40I I think for me it's about the dialogue and I can understand
- 4:44why if you're a kid especially, or if you're into Doctor Who for
- 4:47the monsters and you know, things like that, it might be,
- 4:50it might be a story that bores you shitless, but.
- 4:52For me, it's well, it might be that, you know, it might be that
- 4:55I've just not seen it since I was well like 1716 and just.
- 5:00Cruel. Oh yeah.
- 5:02When he puckers his lips, it gets me moist.
- 5:05He's gorgeous, doesn't he? Also been wrote The Heretic
- 5:08Reminds me of being Levine now because I think he compared
- 5:10himself to once. Do you remember Jim Troll from
- 5:13the Vicar Dibley? I thought that was been wrote
- 5:15The Heretic for years. They sound exactly the same.
- 5:19I do think Rebos has the single best guest performance of all
- 5:22time in Doctor Who. Show, show, show what I.
- 5:25No piss off. Oh, she's fabulous.
- 5:32Is she still alive? Why is she not doing?
- 5:34Her. Well, yeah, wasn't she in?
- 5:35Wasn't she in the End of Time? Well, that can't be the same
- 5:40woman. It's not.
- 5:42That's just the same. Character burning, burning,
- 5:46burning. And you get who doing the
- 5:49similar at the beginning, don't you go he is returning.
- 5:52And they are returning and we are.
- 5:54Returning. It's like you're just making
- 5:56this up now, Ross. I mean to be fair.
- 5:58And then he came back. None of it's real Dylan.
- 6:01He's always making it up. What he He was his own prophecy.
- 6:07He is returning and they are returning.
- 6:10I'll tell you what's refreshing about episode 40, but look at
- 6:13that tentacle going through the wall.
- 6:15That's a glory hole. Crawl's glory hole glory.
- 6:22Crawl. No, where.
- 6:29They haven't quite got the scale right there, have they?
- 6:32Because you've got these big tentacles and then he's up the
- 6:34wall and it's just these tiny little floppy bits.
- 6:40Nobody wants to see that. What?
- 6:45What's great about Four right is finally you get some action on
- 6:49the rig, somebody gets shot, somebody gets javelin to death.
- 6:54The rig is literally almost taken apart by crawl.
- 6:57I'm that's really exciting. We get a little bit of location
- 6:59footage as part of the rig. Towards home, yes.
- 7:04It is literally like a jetty, isn't it?
- 7:06You see it on that documentary. Yeah, they found one little bit
- 7:09and they've gone. This is where.
- 7:10Yeah, I wish there'd been a bit more on there, but saying that,
- 7:12it does make it feel like a a grand finale to to the episode.
- 7:17It's rare as well. I think in Tom's time that for
- 7:21the climax is satisfying like this if you're.
- 7:24Yeah. No, no, it is.
- 7:26Very often it's sort of they the stories start really well,
- 7:30especially in Hinchcliffe time, and they end in a sort of drippy
- 7:34way. I'm assuming go ahead.
- 7:38Now you're gone. I'm assuming Norman Stewart
- 7:40isn't still with us because apparently he started work on
- 7:43Doctor Who's, a production assistant on The Daleks, and
- 7:46worked on various stories including The Web Planet and The
- 7:49Sabotages. That is great knowledge.
- 7:51Stories. Yeah.
- 7:52It's just been in my head and it's just come out of nowhere.
- 7:56So he was a floor assistant, wasn't it?
- 7:57Like you said? And they said he's really great
- 8:00with actors. We're gonna do Underworld, and
- 8:03it's going to require somebody who's really good at shepherding
- 8:05the actors. But fuck me, that's such a that
- 8:09requires such a technical accomplishment.
- 8:12Underworld. Why would you give it to a new
- 8:14director? Yeah, it's a really weird move.
- 8:17And I, you know, I don't, I don't blame him for not doing
- 8:21his best work on that. Was the fact about Matt Irvin
- 8:24having two houses on the infotechs as well?
- 8:27No, that's from his myth makers. You should have Trevor about
- 8:32everybody having watched all of those.
- 8:34Yeah, yeah, I should. He's just got scandalous gossip.
- 8:38It's there. Go and read that book.
- 8:41That's full of scandalous gossip.
- 8:43Oh, wonderful. That is a great look at the crow
- 8:48there. Look, he's having a wonderful
- 8:49time. Oh, who am I going to eat next?
- 8:51Joe, I'm intrigued because you've wrote a very interesting
- 8:55article, a brilliant article on yeah, on story arcs and based
- 9:02in, based a lot of your evidence on the Key to Time.
- 9:04Am I right thinking it's not out yet?
- 9:06It's not out yet, no. It's not yet, but even though
- 9:10you sort of say you don't think story arcs are right for Doctor
- 9:13in that article, the Key to Time season is one of your favorite
- 9:18seasons. So where's the where's the clash
- 9:21that? I mean, I really don't think I
- 9:24one of the linchpins of my argument in that piece is that
- 9:28this really isn't an arc in any way, shape or form the way you
- 9:31would accept it. It is a series of stories with a
- 9:35very loose connection going and I'm.
- 9:37Basically the same conclusion. The writers all basically go,
- 9:40yeah, we can't be arsed with that.
- 9:42We'll get it over and done with either at the beginning or the
- 9:44end of the story, and then we'll just tell a story.
- 9:48And like I said in the article, Douglas Adam comes in at the end
- 9:52of the season and goes right. Fuck these arcs.
- 9:55This is restricting us. I'm going to bring in the
- 9:57randomizer and we can go everywhere and anywhere.
- 10:01I think that's, I think that's why you can only.
- 10:03It's nice to do this occasionally, but it has to be
- 10:06occasionally, I think, otherwise there is an element of
- 10:09restricting the show. But I also think if you're
- 10:12looking at a modern audience, why would you come back to the
- 10:15show if the story's wrapped up in 45 minutes like you, you kind
- 10:20of and I think Russell C Davis 1 does that very well with his
- 10:24arcs. That gives you just enough that
- 10:26they're not they're not the flux style story.
- 10:29Also, Doctor Who being an anthology show is only really
- 10:32true of the new series because we you get 4 weeks of crawl or
- 10:35you get 6 weeks of talents of Weng Chiang.
- 10:39That's not actually an anthology.
- 10:41It's you're getting what you're actually getting is lots of mini
- 10:44serials, as they were called at the time.
- 10:46So it's not quite an anthology show in the way that's Black
- 10:50Mirrors or something. They get to have their cake and
- 10:52easy here, don't they? Because the the whole thing
- 10:54about the kids, it's such an idea that kids can get behind,
- 10:57hunt the key around the universe, right?
- 10:59And it can be anything, anywhere.
- 11:02And then the writers all do imaginative things for that
- 11:06concept, right? When power in power Kroll, it's
- 11:09the thing that's made Kroll massive in Armageddon Factor,
- 11:13it's the Princess, isn't it? So there's a.
- 11:15Model domain. It's just the.
- 11:18And there's a reason why they bring they don't bring it back.
- 11:22But in a lot of the abandoned Doctor Who movies, there's,
- 11:26there's a couple of drafts that feature the key to time or
- 11:28similar quests. Because if you're got, if you're
- 11:31trying to do Doctor Who the movie, you want to show that
- 11:34what the show can do. So a quest is the most simple
- 11:37thing. It takes you from one place to
- 11:38another place to another place to another.
- 11:41And also perhaps why Doctor Who doesn't work as a movie.
- 11:44If you were going to do a series then and you don't want to do an
- 11:48anthology series, how would you, how would you do Doctor Who
- 11:51nowadays? I think I would do it like flux.
- 11:55So it's it's sort of like 6 separate episodes, but it's
- 11:58quite heavily connected. Yeah.
- 12:00What's going on? Destroy the universe every
- 12:02season. No, you wouldn't do that.
- 12:03I mean, or I'd do something which is sort of an anthology,
- 12:07but sort of not. I think what they do with From
- 12:10the Burning onwards. You wouldn't remake that, but
- 12:12you could do something, you know, the Doctor trapped in
- 12:15linear time and living through things in.
- 12:17The series that was so. Great sort of build every time
- 12:20they do it. They sort of build their own
- 12:22world for that series, don't they?
- 12:23Like the Key to Time has a world.
- 12:25The child of the time that has a world.
- 12:27Flux has a has a has its own universe.
- 12:29The only bad side to that though, is, and I think it is a
- 12:32problem with modern television, is if you're not on board for
- 12:36that arc, yeah, you're kind of out that series.
- 12:38But I. Don't think you're in anyway.
- 12:40Like I don't think you're popping it.
- 12:42Never pop into one episode of the series randomly now.
- 12:45Yeah, I just don't. Yeah, you're right.
- 12:48I think that the issue is with a lot of modern Doctor Who, and
- 12:51I'm not just talking about the current run.
- 12:53We always end with that end of the world, end of the universe
- 12:56thing. Could we lower the stakes a
- 12:58little bit? You can do arcs, or if you're
- 13:00not doing arcs, you can do smaller stories.
- 13:02There's there's emotional stories to tell.
- 13:04You've got to find a new way to excite.
- 13:06Yeah, because it's not exciting. After Moffett destroyed the
- 13:09entire universe in the pandoric. Aerobic.
- 13:12Yeah, that's. About as big as it can get, you
- 13:14know. Yeah, I feel like that's not
- 13:16even the last time he does that. Oh no, no.
- 13:20But like, look at World enough for time and the Doctor falls.
- 13:22That's not the end of the universe, that is just the end
- 13:25of life on that ship. But it feels suitably big for a
- 13:29finale. You know, on that note, very
- 13:32quickly I've just listened to Genesis of the Cybermen, right,
- 13:35the big finish, the new Jerry Davies lost story and a load of
- 13:41ships go off at the end of that and it one of them could
- 13:44absolutely be that shoot in well nothing time.
- 13:47It's really tasty. David J Barnes, you're a genius
- 13:50with. This 5 minutes of cross.
- 13:51Question. Go back to your original
- 13:53question about the season. It's not because it's it's an
- 13:56arc base season. That's one of my favourites.
- 13:58I think it's because it's so restingly entertaining this
- 14:01season. It's mercilessly fun to watch
- 14:05all the guest characters this year.
- 14:06Well, all right, maybe Crow or Side are really fun to watch.
- 14:10Like the first four especially. I think the gags are really
- 14:14funny. Like we said, Tom Baker, he's
- 14:17like a light bulb. He glitters, you know.
- 14:20The other good thing about the key to time as a as just like an
- 14:23arc, as loose as it is, is it does force them to only go to
- 14:26earth once. Yeah, because you can.
- 14:29It would just be stupid to have more than One Piece on.
- 14:31Earth. Sorry, I just heard Loose loose
- 14:33arse then. Yeah, so you do get a series
- 14:36that's actually in time and space rather than Earth.
- 14:40I do. I do agree with you though, Joe,
- 14:42I think this is still be my favorite Tom, even if there was
- 14:45no arc just because it is the actual individual stories here
- 14:48that's sort of contradict myself of what I like, but.
- 14:50I suppose it's just nice, isn't it?
- 14:52Just enhances the the stories that there's something going on.
- 14:56Like in every other season, yeah, if you're having a shit
- 14:59day, I would come home and there'd be one or two stories I
- 15:02just wouldn't want to watch. I could put on anything in Key
- 15:05to Time if I was having a shitty day, and I'd have a riot with
- 15:08it. Yeah, and it's mostly because of
- 15:10Tom. And to be fair, Mary, for the
- 15:12most part, right? Yeah, this is, this is just
- 15:15probably Mary's worst like script that she gets.
- 15:18I think she's great in all the others.
- 15:20Tom's looking a bit post lunch in this final episode, isn't it?
- 15:23Like he all the swampies are there they've.
- 15:27Killed right? Oh my God.
- 15:30Crow is coming out right next to the rig.
- 15:33He's going wow. That's a real flow to that
- 15:36isn't? It Do you have a look?
- 15:39You know when you go to the loo. Yeah, I'm a curious guy.
- 15:43Yeah. You ever seen one like that?
- 15:46With sex recently and. You haven't.
- 15:50Stuff like that's come out. I tried to think what that bulb
- 15:54looked like afterwards. She's got a bowl.
- 15:59Did you see that? There was blood when Fena got
- 16:03javelined in the stomach, but blood spurted out.
- 16:07That's quite rare. We get blood in an old Doctor
- 16:09Who. It's new Doctor Who.
- 16:10We don't get it. And the.
- 16:11Shade isn't it due to its 8:00 AM broadcast?
- 16:13We just blow in normal holes in Bill and things like that in the
- 16:16new. Series but.
- 16:17There was no blood, no, I said. Blood.
- 16:19It was fine, yeah. I mean, it's a this reminds me a
- 16:23bit of Trial of a Tyler. Yeah, that trial set is really
- 16:26dull. And then in the last two
- 16:28episodes, it's really great. Like the dramas happening there.
- 16:31All this rig's been really dull, but now Crowell's wrapping his
- 16:34tentacles around him. That was the bit that really
- 16:36pissed me off about Romana. Why would she do that?
- 16:39It's such lazy script, right? And she's just like, I'm just
- 16:42going to go over here right by this window.
- 16:44I just want I just want to go over by the window and then the
- 16:48big tentacle. Doesn't she go, oh, it's all
- 16:49right, he won't know I'm here? It's just it's this disservice
- 16:54to to the character. It's one of those times you want
- 16:56the doctor to say, you stupid bitch.
- 17:00Shoot a gap? I probably would.
- 17:03There's a lot, honey. There's a lot of wobbly sets in
- 17:06this as well. Though, look at that.
- 17:09Look at Chrome straddling the room A.
- 17:11Bit too flimsy but that that window set wobbles earlier on
- 17:15there was a ladder that was wobbling and it's like when they
- 17:18leaned against the door that wobbled.
- 17:20Although maybe that's the architecture of the rig because
- 17:22it's in the water, so it's got a float side.
- 17:24Yeah, you'd. Expect a rig to Well, if I heard
- 17:27I'd expect a rig I'm. Going to give you an education
- 17:30now, right? Because I'm assuming you've
- 17:32never had anal sex, but I think Dylan and I might both have done
- 17:36that at some point when Crowell was straddling the rig there and
- 17:39it was all looking a bit awkward.
- 17:41And that's a bit what it's like the first time, you know,
- 17:44getting it right, it looks that's exactly what it's like.
- 17:48Thanks for the tip. You're welcome.
- 17:51That's what she said or he said. The.
- 17:53News Crawl wasn't educational. Thing.
- 17:56Yeah, I'm sorry, sorry. One of those Tom gets to go out
- 18:02now and be truly heroic, doesn't it?
- 18:04He goes right. I think I think that is nice.
- 18:06It does feel like a hero moment and it does feel like a big
- 18:09finale, even if it is just a four year old junking bloke with
- 18:15a stick waving a stick around on a rig.
- 18:17Dylan is desperate to get this point out.
- 18:21It's too late now. No, come on, We want to hear it.
- 18:25I. Was just going to say one of
- 18:26those swamp is had a really shiny face.
- 18:28That was it, No. Wait 2 minutes to hear that.
- 18:33Look, I can't always be full of exciting information called like
- 18:37the BB CS video disc is called into service again as Rankwin's
- 18:41death is recorded in reverse and played backwards.
- 18:45Oh, that's very clever. Oh, poor John Abenari is like,
- 18:47what's happened to my career. So yeah, they shot it backwards.
- 18:52That's. Interesting.
- 18:53So is this, was this meant to be a reveal the first time you
- 18:56watched it? Because I can't remember.
- 18:57Was it a surprise the very first time when crawl turns out to be
- 19:00a piece of the key to Time I? Think I was caught up in the
- 19:03story. I didn't care, really.
- 19:06Do you know why it wasn't a surprise for me?
- 19:08Because this is the clip they use on the Tom Baker years which
- 19:11came. Beforehand, he's having a great
- 19:14time watching that as well. It's actually a neat way to
- 19:17solve the monster problem as well, isn't it?
- 19:21I really like as well. There's a wonderful bit at the
- 19:23minute where a tentacle just suddenly dashes in and takes the
- 19:26tracer out of his hand and it's another really good sort of
- 19:29shock some there it is there. It's really good.
- 19:33And they just say pulls it away. I really want a replica key to
- 19:37time and they they used to be all over.
- 19:41Behind you. Used to be all over eBay for
- 19:45about £60 and I haven't seen one in years and then one showed up
- 19:47and it was £300. I'd love one as well.
- 19:50I would love 1. This is, look what they're doing
- 19:53here. They're really suggesting that
- 19:55the monster is there, aren't they?
- 19:57They've you've got horrible gunky tentacles wrapped around
- 20:00him and then they're pushing something against wherever he is
- 20:04to make it look like Crowell's Brody's sort of rocket.
- 20:07I want the tracers stuck in it as well.
- 20:09Absolutely. Do you know who's got one?
- 20:11We could do a heist, you know, like Jason Thompson's got a Key
- 20:15to time. All right, let's go get him,
- 20:17yeah. I mean, if you go down the roof
- 20:20on a wire like Lady Christina I. Often do.
- 20:25Oh, Doctor Quick. Oh no, he's.
- 20:28Given it, the old struggle, isn't he?
- 20:29It's not. It's not an easy win.
- 20:33And to be fair to Dudley, he sort of pumps in a lot of oh,
- 20:35look at Tom's face now, he looks so happy.
- 20:37Yeah, that's the. Book cover.
- 20:39That's the book cover. Yeah.
- 20:41You see that smile? He's a hero, isn't he?
- 20:47Yeah. I mean, you know, this is one of
- 20:48the stories it'll tell. Like, Once Upon a time, I was on
- 20:51this rig. This giant tentacle monster was
- 20:54coming at me. I stabbed him with the Tracer.
- 20:58Well, that's how I'll tell it anyway.
- 21:01Well, not anymore way so. Because it's been a while since
- 21:05I watched The Armageddon Factor. What what happens to Princess
- 21:10Asta when the doctor touches her with his stick and.
- 21:13She falls in love with him. Marries him.
- 21:16They fuck for about 5 months and then they don't talk on sale.
- 21:19But does she? Because right it says that crawl
- 21:22like regenerates into like 100 tiny squids or something.
- 21:26I don't remember Princess Ashta doing that.
- 21:29Oh, well, no, when the segments go back out into the universe at
- 21:33the end, don't they just. She's there, isn't she?
- 21:35She goes. Oh, Merak.
- 21:37Oh, so he found you? He puts crawl back then.
- 21:41Yeah, he just. Put the tracer in his mouth.
- 21:44He would put anything. In so crawl can come back.
- 21:47So crawl it. Yeah, crawl.
- 21:49Do you think crawl was back just?
- 21:50Said Crawl. Crawl's back.
- 21:51Will crawl. Please write the sequel to this.
- 21:55The wrath of Crawl. Oh dear, which doctors I would
- 22:00go up against? You know, crawl.
- 22:03I feel like Jodie needs to go up against a big tentacle monster.
- 22:06I'm. Sure, she's been that week.
- 22:07And then we could fit it into Orphan 55.
- 22:11Yeah, that's it. That's it.
- 22:13What? What has that clock been in?
- 22:15What are the Doctor Who stories that countdown clock?
- 22:17Are cheap. Did you see the bit earlier
- 22:20while we were all talking, but the bit earlier where he's up
- 22:23the ladder and he's using his hammer to stop the rocket
- 22:27garage? Sort of taps it.
- 22:29When the whole wall wobbles, there's a memo in the
- 22:31documentary where they go. We were watching and we're
- 22:34appalled at how shoddy that set was.
- 22:38Try harder. Yeah, I mean, that's where the
- 22:41ladder wobbles as well as the set.
- 22:44That's not right, is it? There'd be a reshoot now, Dylan
- 22:47wouldn't there? It would be, or they'd sort it
- 22:49out with computers. Well, the First Doctor against
- 22:54Crawl would be pretty fun, yeah. I feel a bit sorry for this man
- 22:58Fenner now though, he's stuck here with these swampies.
- 23:00He's going to have a great time. They're all men.
- 23:05We don't know what what he's like.
- 23:06It's the future. It's got a swampy kink.
- 23:11Are there women swampies anywhere?
- 23:14No, I think we'd see them. So Mary Tams the only lady in
- 23:18the story. Yeah, well, it's a Robert Holmes
- 23:20script, remember? Of course, and he famously.
- 23:23Hates that when you said that I hadn't realized that was like a
- 23:26dot and bubble moment. Plot twist.
- 23:30Maybe that's why this is slightly duller than the others,
- 23:32because there's a lot of brilliant women in the case.
- 23:34Time, yeah. Yeah, and as I said that I think
- 23:37the one my real issue with Crawl apart from the boring rig scenes
- 23:42are that Roman is just constantly underserved compared
- 23:45to every other story in the season.
- 23:47And it's weird because he wrote Rebos and he wrote her up in
- 23:51Rebos. She had great, great scenes in.
- 23:52There, but again, there still aren't a lot of women in there
- 23:54do. You remember that lion?
- 23:56She goes for him in the TARDIS. You know, before I met you, I
- 23:59was even willing to be impressed.
- 24:01She's great. That's article about you, Joe.
- 24:05What's that? Before I met you, I was even
- 24:08willing to be impressed. I'm really sad now.
- 24:13I always flick between Ramana 1 and Ramana 2.
- 24:16I bet you do. That's a wonderful TARDIS shot
- 24:20in the marsh there, isn't it? Yeah.
- 24:23Great dematerialization. In the time frame.
- 24:26But we came in on a dull shot. But we went out on a on a
- 24:29brilliant shot. I'm a.
- 24:31High. When I look at that.
- 24:33Well, that's 4 episodes of the three of us insulting each other
- 24:36terribly. It's gone so quick and we've
- 24:38spoken about crawl for at least 5 minutes.
- 24:40No, we did. We did.
- 24:41We did a good 50% crawl. I think we did as well, but
- 24:45you're going to do another 2 1/2% now as you tell me you're
- 24:48free. Fabulous things to recommend The
- 24:51power of crawl, starting with Luke.
- 24:53OK, well I mean I would say it the whole time really, but the
- 24:56outside quagmire swamplands is just great ugly.
- 25:00The fact we've actually put actors there, it just makes the
- 25:04whole tale. Although, although it's got
- 25:08silly elements, it makes it feel dangerous and exciting.
- 25:12We need to go to more blogs. Yes, agreed.
- 25:17Enough about George Michael, Dylan.
- 25:20I would like to choose Tom Baker's outfit because it's his
- 25:24best one. It's his best outfit, his best
- 25:27coat. I think he looks great.
- 25:29I think he he looks fantastic running around in that swamp.
- 25:32He does some great scarf acting in there.
- 25:35So I'm choosing his costume, the definitive, do you think, Doctor
- 25:39costume. More doctors should wear
- 25:41wellies. I think they should all wear
- 25:43wellies constantly if you would. If you live the live the life
- 25:47the doctor is, you'd either be in running shoes or wear at
- 25:49least. Yeah, it's true.
- 25:52I mean, I suppose Colin had spat.
- 25:53What the hell are spats? Nobody knows.
- 25:57It's sort of weird orange cloth, isn't it?
- 25:59Oh, it's that program where the guy who dances on the burger, do
- 26:02you remember that spats sit in the burger place?
- 26:05Oh. That sounds vaguely familiar,
- 26:06yeah. It's got Ling Tai from
- 26:08Battlefield in it as the waitress.
- 26:10Great, my I'll do a podcast on that soon.
- 26:15Well, my first thing I can't believe either of you didn't go
- 26:17for it is obviously Crowell himself, the great momentous
- 26:20beast, with his enormous pulsating sticky tentacles
- 26:24dragging people off into the swamp to be murdered.
- 26:27A genuinely ambitious attempt to bring a Bahir Moth monster to
- 26:34the screen. And I think for the most part
- 26:37it's delightful. Joe I.
- 26:39Think it is because with every other big monster like the
- 26:43Cranoid, they're just sort of personality less and even though
- 26:46Crawl should be, he's not, he's like.
- 26:49Chatty bastard. It might just, it might just be
- 26:51because he's got the name Crawl, but it makes him feel a bit of a
- 26:55lad. But he just wants to eat people,
- 26:58right? I mean, I get it.
- 27:01Yeah, yeah, I've got an insatiable hunger sometimes.
- 27:06Sometimes you just need a rum dust in your life, you know?
- 27:09Does your tentacle emerge when you get hungry?
- 27:12Not so much anymore. I'm 41.
- 27:15I'm 40. 5:00 I've got no hope, Luke, what's your second thing?
- 27:20Well, instead, the invention of the Doctor's best superpower
- 27:24that we never see again. We I love that.
- 27:31It's great. I like you and the Doctor has a
- 27:32weird superpower, but not one that can really be used outside
- 27:36of one or two situations. So all of them in every story,
- 27:41isn't it? Yeah, Robert Holmes is quite
- 27:43good for that, isn't it? For giving him something like oh
- 27:46we can survive this for 10 minutes and bloody bar.
- 27:49You know when McCoy brandishes his finger and takes Patterson,
- 27:54there are so many times in his era when that would have come in
- 27:57really, really useful. Yeah, and I she goes and finger
- 28:01anyone. Jonathan.
- 28:03Graf, Jonathan Graf. Excuse me, Dylan, what's your
- 28:08second? We're going to get a bit slim
- 28:10pickings now go on I'm. Going to go for an obvious one,
- 28:12but then we go for Mary Tam and I know it may not be her best
- 28:15story, but she's fucking great. I think she's, I wish she'd done
- 28:19more. I wish she'd done more Big
- 28:20Finish. I think she is effortlessly
- 28:25glamorous, funny, sardonic, like she's just brilliant and more
- 28:30merry time in our lives, please. I mean, the iPlayer has skipped
- 28:35to where I was last in the Armageddon factor.
- 28:39Now power of Crawl has ended. Yeah.
- 28:40And Mary Tam is in a beautiful white dress with a lot of
- 28:44cleavage on display, her hair flowing down.
- 28:47I mean, is it as close? Tell me if I'm mad.
- 28:49Is it as close to like a a movie start that we've had in Doctor
- 28:53Who, The sort of visually cool movie actress?
- 28:58Yeah, I think visually no one comes close as that sort of
- 29:01classic beauty. You know her husband died pretty
- 29:06much straight after. Her.
- 29:08It's really sad, isn't it? She passed away and then
- 29:11literally 2 days later he did as well.
- 29:14Just like grief. Is it possible to die of a
- 29:17broken heart? Apparently so.
- 29:20It's very sad. Don't either of you go anywhere,
- 29:22all right? Because it will.
- 29:24Happen. We'll, we'll all go together.
- 29:28Over a Cliff or something, Thelma and Louise style.
- 29:33Into a bog, yeah. No, that's your biggest fear,
- 29:36isn't it? My second thing, then, is going
- 29:40to be, because I'm getting a bit desperate now, the fact that
- 29:47episode 4 is the most exciting episode of the story, and that
- 29:50the action ramps up, and that the very last set piece of crawl
- 29:54attacking that oil rig, which is utterly fucking absurd, manages
- 29:59to be quite exciting. Oh.
- 30:03God, I think. Alone your load, haven't you?
- 30:07What I, what I alluded to in that, like the idea of I'm
- 30:10watching crawl where I could be watching something else.
- 30:13I think there's a reliability in the power of crawl in that I've
- 30:19watched it like maybe six or seven times and every single
- 30:23time it's not worse than I remember and it's not better
- 30:27than I remember. It's exactly how I remember.
- 30:30And it's just like a reliable constant from bit of Doctor Who
- 30:36that is never going to make you angry.
- 30:39It's never going to make you ecstatic.
- 30:41It's just going to make you reasonably happy, and actually,
- 30:45that's great. And in this modern world,
- 30:48reasonably happy is a bonus. Yeah, wow.
- 30:50As as surprising as it may be, you may have just made a very
- 30:54profound for there, Luke, because, sorry, I don't mean to
- 30:58insult you, because I do think there's something in that.
- 31:01I've got a handful of stories where I just know if I put them
- 31:04on, they're always going to like Planet of the Daleks to chase
- 31:07something like that. If, if I'm having a Sunday and
- 31:09it's a rainy day and I know I can put those on and my opinion
- 31:13won't change on them at all, and I know every fucking scene and
- 31:16every line and every. But I just feel good watching
- 31:19them, you know? Yeah, it's nice to have a bit of
- 31:21sturdiness in your life with your Doctor Who.
- 31:23Yeah, definitely more sturdy than that rig anyway.
- 31:26Yes, indeed, Dylan. The fact that Norman Stewart got
- 31:31given a second chance after Underworld, like because
- 31:35Underworld was, would have been a massive issue for many a
- 31:38director, being Douglas Campfield or Norman Stewart.
- 31:42And while the studio stuff isn't the most dynamic, he's working
- 31:46with some very plain sets that seem quite small.
- 31:49But the location stuff looks fabulous, so you get some
- 31:51interesting shots. And you know, I'm looking
- 31:54forward to seeing that location footage polished up when it
- 31:57eventually appears on the collection box set, because I
- 32:00think it'll look really fucking good.
- 32:03And I'll end it in typical hamster fashion and just say all
- 32:07of that lovely green flesh on display.
- 32:09I mean, I do like a nice calf and you do get to see some
- 32:12lovely calves and fires in this. Big green cock.
- 32:18I would have been on location. I would have scrubbed them all
- 32:20down afterwards. You can see how far up there are
- 32:22so that green makeup goes. Oh, no way.
- 32:26That's what got John Barrowman in trouble, wasn't it?
- 32:29Fellas, where are we heading next?
- 32:32We're going to the Pertwee era, aren't we?
- 32:34Are we doing it? What are we doing?
- 32:36We're going to do terror of the autumn.
- 32:38Yeah, yeah. Who chose this?
- 32:43I think it was you and I because I think we both have very
- 32:46differing opinions on it. Oh, you hate it then?
- 32:49I just I I don't hate it, but I have a lot of issues with the
- 32:53Pertwee era. That all starts with this story.
- 32:56Well, Luke. I absolutely love tariff.
- 32:58The Autons come. On I'm sort of more in Luke's
- 33:01camp, but I do see some of Dylan's things.
- 33:05So this is great. We're going to have a nice
- 33:06because we were all a bit on the same page here.
- 33:08It wasn't, were we? I thought before, you know,
- 33:12you've done a lot of commentaries, but I think the
- 33:14plan is, and I, I made this plan and neither of you agreed we
- 33:17should make sure we've done one for each doctor.
- 33:20I like that plan. That's lovely.
- 33:22We've we've done it, Jodie, we said about Orphan 55.
- 33:24We'll do that as well. Yeah, but we've done we've, I
- 33:26reckon we've done 7 or 8 doctors, so, you know, we've got
- 33:29a few more to oh God, we've got to do a gap fuck.
- 33:33Wait, wait till series 2 comes out.
- 33:35There might be something amazing in there.
- 33:37I hear episode 4 is great. Which one's that?
- 33:40Lucky day, the one without shitty gap.
- 33:43But genuinely from people in the know.
- 33:46Is that the Pete Mctighe one? Yeah, the one with the monster,
- 33:50that sort of weird gargoyle where you type monster.
- 33:54Oh. Wow, I couldn't say for.
- 33:56Certain. Lucky day and I hear Episode 5's
- 33:58a bit of a belt. Episode 5's the one I'm most
- 34:00excited about. Which one's that?
- 34:03The Juno Dawson one. No.
- 34:06I'm not watching that shit. She wrote against.
- 34:10She wrote a brilliant 13th Doctor.
- 34:12Book also she wrote Redacted which is fucking great.
- 34:15So it's not against Juno, I just, you know, I, I cannot Co
- 34:19sign the level of bullshit that I think is going to be in that
- 34:22story. I think you're going to love
- 34:24Season 2, yeah. I've got a feeling, I've got a
- 34:27feeling I might like it, but I'm just going to let it settle, get
- 34:31spoiled, and then go in where when I need to, you know why?
- 34:35Would you do it that way, you Batman?
- 34:38That's the last season, just. Watch it.
- 34:41The last season was so disappointing.
- 34:42Stop taking it so seriously. Just stop doing.
- 34:46It's just ATV show we've devoted our fucking lives to if.
- 34:50Someone had told me it was just ATV series.
- 34:52I would have. I could have changed my entire
- 34:54life. How can we end this in a crow
- 34:57sort of way? Crow, crow, crow, crow.
- 35:01Come on, Luke, Crow. I'm going to cut it.
