- 0:01Coming up on this week's episode of hip Hop Now podcast, Mob Deep and
- 0:07the Stove, Sample on Shook One's Part two, Childish Gambino and that Drake
- 0:13this record and my thoughts on the Ransom and Nicholas Craven Project Director's Cut four.
- 0:23He did it Again, Let's do it. Welcome to hip Hop Now
- 0:30Podcast. As if you're from the future, You're going to do show as
- 0:37out of don't disrespect the leg hip hop and say this dadum, let's get
- 0:47right into the business. What up, y'all? I am your host Vegas
- 0:51and this is hip Hop Now Podcast, a podcast specifically designed to keep you
- 0:58caught up on all things hip hop, music, game culture that happened throughout
- 1:02the week. Big shout out to the supporters over at patreon dot com slash

- 1:22see the logo in the background. I got hoodies, I got T shirts.
- 1:26I have stickers for your laptop. Whatever you need, we got them.
- 1:30The link to that description is also well the link to the merch is
- 1:38in the description of this episode. That's what I meant to say. Big
- 1:44shout out to all hip hop dot com, hip Hop Dax dot com,
- 1:49the source magazine dot com, double x sell threads. Let's talk about that
- 1:59really quick. So if you don't know, and you frequent the Internet or
- 2:05the Internet's shout out rescipiece to combat Jack, you know or you don't know
- 2:13that Twitter has been a very crazy place. I once did a podcast called
- 2:20hip Hop Twitter where I took well, actually you're gonna get it tasted that
- 2:25a little bit later today, but I would I would basically take takes from
- 2:35hip hop Twitter with my homie Yins and react to him. Right, it's
- 2:43a whole podcast, is about two or three seasons or whatever some would guess.
- 2:47Blah blah blah, and hip hop Twitter is a thing, just like
- 2:52black Twitter is a thing. It's like a group of individuals on Twitter who
- 3:00really only talk about hip hop. That's what they tweet about, that's what
- 3:02they listen to, that's what they debate. They do spaces hip hop Twitter.
- 3:07It's like an unofficial community. Well, Elon Musk bought Twitter, and
- 3:13as you know, things have happened where a lot of people are unhappy,
- 3:16some people left, blah blah blah. But over this past weekend and view
- 3:20from the future, you know, to get your ass out of here.
- 3:22But during the July fourth weekend, we had a couple of competitors Series Competitors
- 3:30Challenge Twitter one being spilled which black Twitter kind of rushed that joint. But
- 3:37it's very different from Twitter, somewhere in between Twitter and Instagram right in its
- 3:42style and it's kind of fun. But right now it's in beta form,
- 3:46so it's only available on iPhone and invite only, But that's just so the
- 3:51app will work for the people are using it. That's what beta means.
- 3:53It's a testing phase. But the other app that was ready when it launched,
- 4:01well ready, just not a beta but ready as in its operational is
- 4:09a joint call Threads, and it's made by Meta, the organization or the
- 4:15company that owns Facebook and Instagram. It is a direct link to Instagram.
- 4:20So if you have an Instagram account and followers, you can instantly move your
- 4:28profile or attach your profile to Threads and kind of retain all your followers and
- 4:33use it like Twitter. It's more like Twitter, right, So you know,
- 4:39the hip hop heads aheaded there, so we don't know what's going to
- 4:42happen, but for you and for now, we are including a feature on
- 4:47this show that used to be a part of my other podcast, Hip Hop
- 4:53Twitter Later, stay tuned for that. And let me just make sure that
- 4:58you know we all set up for that. We set up, We set
- 5:00up, Yeah, we set up. Okay, cool. So with that
- 5:04being said, let's get right into the business. Mob Deep and the stove
- 5:13sample. Now, this is on hip Hop dx dot com. Havoc debunks
- 5:19Mob Deep Shook Ones Part two stove sample myth. Now, if you don't
- 5:25know, and you're like, well, what is the myth? What are
- 5:27you talking about? What is this? If you know the song Shook Ones
- 5:31right to all the Killers and one hundred dollar billars that one. When it
- 5:38starts, there's a ticking sound and according to Havoc, it's a project ghetto
- 5:46stove ticking sound. That said what he described it as. But it's a
- 5:49stove ticking sound. You know, when you're gonna light the gas stove and
- 5:54it ticks before the flames hit. That sound that tick. Wow. The
- 6:00myth is that that was a stove in the crib and he exampled it.
- 6:06But Havoc says, sometimes the myth is better than the truth. Let's read,
- 6:15let's see. So Havoc debunked has debunked the longstanding myths surrounding the stove
- 6:19sample of Mob Deep's classic song on Mob Deep's classic song Shook One's Part two.
- 6:28In a new interview with series Sex Radio, he had this to say,
- 6:33in our quote, you don't want a myth take a life of his
- 6:38own, takes on a life of his own, have it. Sorry?
- 6:44You just be like, effort. You don't want to hurt nobody's feelings,
- 6:47so you just agree with the myth. I'd be like, all right,
- 6:50effort. Yeah, it's from the stove. Now. He does go on
- 6:56to say, the truth of the matter is that the high hat that I
- 7:00used on the actual track of Shook Ones sounds similar to a project stove or
- 7:09just the stove, because I don't live in the projects in my stove I
- 7:13used to, but my stove in the suburbs sounds the exact same way.
- 7:17So people made a correlation thinking I used the stove for the actual track because
- 7:23in the video it's the first thing that comes along along with the record,
- 7:28and they hear the head and they hear the stove. So yeah, now
- 7:36what's crazy about that is when I first heard that song and throughout the ends,
- 7:41I never thought that sound was the sound of a stove being laid.
- 7:47Now, when you think about it, with all the cook cook coke rats
- 7:50that exist to this day, it would be dope. Like he said,
- 7:57it's actually dope when you think about it. But I also didn't think that
- 8:01was a high hat when I heard it. I don't know. I guess
- 8:05I thought it was the metro normal something. I thought it was something.
- 8:09But nevertheless it's it's not a stove. So the myth of or the legend
- 8:18of the song stove clicking sound and mob deeps shook One's part two. It's
- 8:24just that a myth. He it's a it's a legend. Probably kind of
- 8:30sucks that he dispelled it. He probably should have left that there. He
- 8:35probably should have made a song where he does sample the stove making that clicking
- 8:39sound, so then people didn't go even crazy or like yo he did.
- 8:43He did the stove thing, but all throughout the beat, I don't know,
- 8:48but it is interesting to learn that that was something people thought and for
- 8:52Havoc to point, I was just like, yo, it's just the way
- 8:56the high hat sound sound like a ticking stove. They have it. Childish
- 9:03Gambino or Donald Glover as some of y'all knowed him from Atlanta, he had
- 9:09confessed that this Is America was originally a this song towards Drake. That is
- 9:20interesting. That is really interesting. Let's see what we can fund. One
- 9:31of the headlines blast a Gambino and the twenty eighteen anthem, which the Atlanta
- 9:35created previously admitted, started out as a Drake this so started out as a
- 9:41Drake this, so let's see. I had the idea three years before,
- 9:48he explained. I told Director Hero the idea. He's like, oh wait
- 9:52a minute, So this is this is deeper than I thought. We may
- 9:56have to read this. This is also on Hip Hop dx dot com.
- 10:00So the thing is is the song by Childish Gambino was originally started out as
- 10:07a dis song towards Drake and Donald Glover or Childish Gambino revealed that recently Drake
- 10:18did a concert recently and he didn't say anything, but they had a ticker
- 10:24going across the bottom of whatever he was showing that said the song is overrated.
- 10:30Now I have a problem with that, but we'll get back to it.
- 10:35This is on Hip Hop dx dot com. Drake has shaded childish Gambinos
- 10:41This is America. During the opening night of his and twenty one savages It's
- 10:46All a Blur tour in Chicago while Drizzy performing headlines on Wednesday, news headlines
- 10:54began running on a digital ticker through the side of the United Center stage.
- 10:58One of the head lines blasted Gambino and its twenty eighteen anthem, which the
- 11:03Atlanta creator previously admitted started out as a Drake this This is what the ticker
- 11:09said. The overrated and over awarded hit song This Is America was originally a
- 11:16Drake this interesting. Glover's provocative This is America top the Billboard Hot one hundred
- 11:28in May twenty eighteen, and it's now three times platinum. Speaking to GQ,
- 11:33Gambino touched on his icy relationship with Drake and admitted the song started out
- 11:37as a joke and Drizzy distract I had the idea three years before, he
- 11:43explained, told director whoever ever the idea, and he's like, I really
- 11:48want to do that. The idea for the song started as a joke,
- 11:52to be completely honest, this is America. That was all we had was
- 11:56that line. He continued, It started as a Drake this to be honest,
- 12:01as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like,
- 12:05the issue sounds kind of hard though, so I was like, let
- 12:09me play with it, boy, cause elsewhere we're just gonna stop. Right
- 12:18there, A couple of issues I have for this. You know, when
- 12:26you say something started out as a disc to another artist, it's going to
- 12:31be news. You know. Aubrey aka Drake is very emotional. You know,
- 12:43at some point, if he hasn't already, it's going to say something
- 12:46or do something as he did with his Taker thing, because that's who he
- 12:52is, and maybe it is a method to this madness. Now the song
- 12:58being over awarded and overrated, I think it is debatable. I don't like
- 13:09it because of what it represented at that time, right because to me to
- 13:16take a jab at a song that was originally supposed to sort of started out
- 13:22as a disc record, but it really only had one line that said,
- 13:26this is America. He hasn't said anything about you, so why would you
- 13:31be angry? I know you can be angry or upset or bothered by the
- 13:35fact that he was going to this you on a record, but he didn't.
- 13:39It turned into something else, And to downplay the success of a song
- 13:48that was along with all right, that was directly tied and connected to things
- 13:54that were going on in this country at the time, meaning black lives matter
- 14:00and the killings of innocent black men and women by police across the country.
- 14:07Right, And we know this happens across the world, but specifically at that
- 14:09time, that song represented something to somebody. And maybe and why I say
- 14:15he kind of has a point, it is only because I think visually it
- 14:20did more than it did sonically, because if you were like me, you
- 14:24saw the video first, then the song meant something different because you had the
- 14:31visuals to go with the lyrics. If you heard the song first, then
- 14:37maybe you didn't get it, maybe you didn't really like it. Maybe it
- 14:41just didn't have the same impact the video. And really is more about the
- 14:48direction of the video, right, Howard was directed. That's what was dope
- 14:52about it. It was how it was directed. Right, So the song
- 14:58was like a soundtrack to this thing, as opposed to it's this great song
- 15:01that just happens to have a great video, and sometimes people just it goes
- 15:05hand in hand because the video has now enhanced the song. You get what
- 15:09I'm saying. So I from sonically and as an artist, I get what
- 15:15Drake might be saying. But also I don't remember any Drake records that were
- 15:24synonymous with messages as it pertains to Black Lives Matter at that time when he's
- 15:31recorded all kinds of things. Kendrick did it, child Is Gambino did it,
- 15:37Joey Badass did it, Little Baby did it. A couple of couple
- 15:43of them did it. So to me, just let that headline of what
- 15:50child is getting. Beino said about a potential disrecord, let it go.
- 15:56But this is hip hop, and I don't want to see a pusher T
- 16:03versus Jim Jones Battam. But I think I want to see a childish game
- 16:10Beano versus Trade. I think I want to see that. I think I
- 16:15really want to see that because it's a lot of similarities there with those two.
- 16:18As it relates to the music. They make, the acting a singing,
- 16:23it could kind of get kind of crazy. I'm not saying they got
- 16:26to do all of this in the record I'm talking about. They're both creative
- 16:30cats, right, it would be interesting. So there you have it.
- 16:37And lastly, so not that long ago, Ransom Rapper, who've been in
- 16:45this game for a while now, put out the fourth iteration of his project,
- 16:52his series Director's Cut, this one being Director's Cut four. What's the
- 16:59full time? The Director's Cut four, Rise of the Machines right, kind
- 17:03of like a Terminator theme. It's ten tracks, thirty three minutes. Originally
- 17:11it was released on this website where you know, you could purchase it.
- 17:17It was exclusive. You could purchase it and gain access to the album,
- 17:21and you know other perks like I think, like an autograph or something like
- 17:23that. I'll leave a link to the description in this episode so you can
- 17:29get to that length. Because support hip hop, right hip hop. But
- 17:37I'm a busy man, y'all. I'm not even gonna lie. I'm an
- 17:42old I'm an older cat. I'm not the oldest guy you may know,
- 17:45but I'm old enough to need time and space in order to listen to the
- 17:51music. I like half the time I listened in the gym. I'm just
- 17:55not gonna navigate on my phone trying to work out to get to your album
- 17:59through a site I've never used before, right, so I was getting around
- 18:03to it, but never did well. Nicholas Craven and Ransom release the album
- 18:08or the project on all streaming services. I'm pretty sure it's on iTunes also,
- 18:12so you can go and buy it. That way, he'll get the
- 18:15bread. He'll get more in this other length, but he'll still get the
- 18:18bread. But it was my opportunity to finally hear it after I guess a
- 18:25week or two of it being album. And if you have been keeping score
- 18:30with this podcast and my last episode before they run the Jewels episode where I
- 18:37talked about my top five and how this top five I have of the year
- 18:42so far could be completely different. Two slots have already changed. One was
- 18:51the addition of Killer Mike's Michael. The other one now is Ransoms Directors Cut
- 18:57four features include Shade, Noir, Ty lit Quality, Nick Grant, Crooked
- 19:07Eye, among others. This man is It's one of those things I've heard
- 19:15Ransom a long time ago, you know, mixtapes and all that, and
- 19:18I always thought it was nice and I always wonder what happened to him.
- 19:22But when you talk about MC's aging well with their craft. Not many do.
- 19:32Some regrets, right, get worse. Right, they don't know how
- 19:36to find the pocket when it comes to rapping anymore, or they pick beats
- 19:41or make terrible choices, or they feel like they got to make the music
- 19:44of the kids right in order to sustain their their wealth. Some rappers celebrity
- 19:51are bigger than their pockets, right, and you see it in the moves
- 19:55they make and then specifically with their music. For Ransom Man is just this
- 20:03album. It's for those of you out there who want to hear punchlines,
- 20:11bars, quotables, whatever way you want to characterize it. If you need
- 20:17to listen to everything being said. Um, there's concepts within versus. There's
- 20:22concepts within lines, there's concepts within songs. That's concepts within the album.
- 20:30Right, Rise of the Machine terminate the theme. And every time he does
- 20:36this, whether it's the Directors Cuts albums or or the other albums he had
- 20:42that kind of had a specific theme pertaining to film or or you know,
- 20:48whatever it may be, or just pop culture in general. Just keep doing
- 20:55that, Ransom, because this, this this project, just it makes me
- 20:59proud that hip hop still exists in this way, that there is an artist
- 21:06who's not a new artist who's hungry and for attention, so artists who could
- 21:11have gave up a while ago. It's an artist who could just be happy
- 21:15with three fans and that's it. He going for it every time. For
- 21:22example, there is one song, and forgive me if I do not know
- 21:32the name. It maybe Manchurian candidate, I'm not sure, but leave the
- 21:40comment in a comment section. But he does have a song right where I'm
- 21:45sitting here working out in the gym, listening like I usually do for the
- 21:48first time, and I'm just like, yeah, this album's crazy. I'm
- 21:52feeling it, and I'm listening to this one song and he's talking about not
- 21:56taking the vaccine and playing for Duke and and all that stuff, and I'm
- 22:00like, damn, I didn't know all of that was going on with this
- 22:02man. Then at the end of the verse he said, who am I?
- 22:06And I was like, oh it, Kyrie Irving, you just described
- 22:11him. Is it something that's gonna blow you away change your life? Probably
- 22:17not, but it does raise a certain level of excitement of excitement in me
- 22:23as a hip hop head, because we just don't get people who want to
- 22:29commit to just doing the hip hop, right, everybody trying to be rich,
- 22:33everybody trying to be the ultimate drug deal at everybody trying to be the
- 22:37most popular person, trying to cross genres, you know, saying I'm gonna
- 22:41wrap over traps to the kids, like everybody doing all this other stuff.
- 22:45But what happened to just pure creativity, whatever happened to concepts that stuffing?
- 22:56I know I'm going I know, I'm going a little bit long, But
- 23:00you know, when this man was writing this stuff, you knew it.
- 23:06He knew it was going to be ill and he was writing it for the
- 23:08heads. Had to be because that's who's going to dig it, and it's
- 23:14not an exclusive club. But it's just makes so much sense, honestly.
- 23:22So again this is my impressions of this project. But again, Ransom and
- 23:30Nicholas Craven Director's Cut four Rising Machines. It's one of the best albums of
- 23:36the year, hands down, no debating it so far. Right, we'll
- 23:42see what happens, see what happens. That top five is really competitive for
- 23:47me at this point when it started off kind of slow, starting to pick
- 23:51up a little bit. So before we end the show, we're gonna do
- 23:56a little segment that will be featured probably monthly for now until Twitter disappears,
- 24:03if we gotta call it something else, but we are adding as I mentioned
- 24:08hip hop Twitter as a segment on hip Hop Down podcast. So to my
- 24:17correspondent against what a hip hop twitter heads talking about this week, High Spice
- 24:22got so many quotable lines it's insane. I might be jumping the gun a
- 24:26little bit here, but she really reminds me of a reasonable Doubt Ra Jason.
- 24:30Yeah, oh yeah. You jumped out, you jumped the guns,
- 24:33you jumped out of window, you jumped off of a speed and tro You
- 24:37need to jump into a pool of pranhas it stupid? Stop it stop stop
- 24:41stop. IM not gonna do this. This is why threads and Spill and
- 24:49Blue Sky and Master Don, this is why Twitter is gonna be sparsed and
- 24:56gone, hip hop twitters out of control. There's nothing, respectfully, there
- 25:04is nothing about Ice Spice and her music. Pick one blind folks, yourself,
- 25:12pick pick a song out right. There's nothing about her music that's even
- 25:18comparable to Reasonable Doubt and jay Z. Nothing. There's there's no Brooklyn,
- 25:26There's nothing there right, there's no there's nothing there to draw the connection at
- 25:33all, in my opinion, if you want to. I mean, there's
- 25:38barely anything there for someone like a little to have comparisons a little Kim or
- 25:42Foxy or whoever. Right, this is just a hot take. This person
- 25:49would need to give me more information as to why they would say that.
- 25:55But at the end of the day, I don't even know if this person
- 25:59knows what they're talking about. Some people just like to be the captain of
- 26:03the team, the president of the fan club of an artist just because sometimes
- 26:11they do it just because they like them. They know they're artists, but
- 26:15they don't know the artists they're comparing them too. That's the problem, right,
- 26:19They know the artists they love, so they can argue why they think
- 26:23they're great. Of course you like them, but how can you compare them
- 26:30to someone who's so different. That suggests to me that you don't even know
- 26:36the project or the artist you're comparing them too. You don't know that work,
- 26:40because if you did, you wouldn't even draw those comparisons. They were
- 26:45too different. And if you just like saying things because you think eventually they'll
- 26:51be true, you know, eventually you'll realize you don't have many friends,
- 27:00and eventually you hopefully will stop saying that. So there you have it.
- 27:06That's gonna do for me. You can follow me on Instagram, Twitter,
