- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the I'm team series and your daily influence and you know before we get started today, I'd like to encourage you to listen to yesterday's episode if you haven't.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_01]: Greg sat down with Gretchen Google who shared an extraordinary story about navigating, profound loss through faith.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: gratitude and a commitment to serving others and it was a powerful conversation and a reminder that influence reaches far beyond business.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_01]: It shapes every part of our lives.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: Today I'd like to take an idea from that discussion and bring it into the workplace.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: Not grief, not even gratitude as an emotion, but gratitude as a leadership discipline.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: because if we believe I am the influence, then we also have to ask ourselves, what kind of environment am I creating for the people around me?
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: So let's talk about that.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: Gratitude is more than good matters.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's really a leadership choice, an individual choice at that.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: When people hear the words gratitude, they often think of saying, thank you.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: There's certainly nothing wrong with that, but for leaders, gratitude goes much deeper, gratitude is the intentional decision to notice what is working, who is contributing in what deserves to be reinforced.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: Every leader chooses where to focus, attention, some spend every conversation identifying what's wrong, others recognize progress while still holding high standards.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: Neither ignores reality, but one builds energy while the other slowly drains it.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: have been oftentimes one of those who tends to not show my gratitude for the good work our team does.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not that guy sometimes at pets people on the back and does that on a cadence that is really in tune with what we really hold here and for that I hope to get better.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: So as leaders, we influence what our teams pay attention to.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: Gratitude helps direct that focus
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: And look what we reinforce is going to become our culture.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: Culture doesn't emerge from mission statements.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_01]: It emerges from repeated behaviors.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: Think about what gets discussed in your meetings, what gets celebrated, what gets rewarded, what gets ignored.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: If the only time people hear from leadership as when something goes wrong, they eventually begin associating leadership with criticism instead of growth.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: Gratitude doesn't lower expectations.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: It reinforces the behaviors you want repeated.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's how culture is built, not through slogans but through consistent leadership practices.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: Gratitude can create amazingly strong organizations.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: One of the principles behind smart management is that systems outperform intentions.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: So the same is true with culture.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: Organizations shouldn't depend on whether a particular leader happens to be naturally encouraging.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: Gratitude should become part of the operating system.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: Here at IAA we have a gratitude group and it allows people to recognize effort,
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: Share wins, reflect on lessons learned in their personal lives and in their work lives.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: And when gratitude becomes intentional instead of occasional, people begin believing that their work matters.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: And when people believe they matter engagement, ownership, and responsibility, naturally flow and grow.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_01]: Responsible influence starts with what we choose to multiply.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's positive.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: we often ask, what are we influencing?
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: A better question might be, what are we multiplying?
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: And what are we multiplying that is positive and responsible?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: Because leaders multiply whatever they consistently reinforce.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: Fear can spread.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: Negativity can spread.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: blame, but so can gratitude.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: So can encourage them.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_01]: And so can't responsibility and positivity.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: If our mission is to build organizations where people say we are the influence, then gratitude isn't just a personality trait.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's part of the discipline that helps make that possible.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yesterday, Greg and Gretchen reminded us that gratitude can exist even during life's most difficult seasons.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: Today, I'd encourage you to think about what gratitude looks like inside your organization, inside your area of influence.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: Not as a feeling.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: Not as a once a year recognition program, but as a leadership discipline that shapes culture, strengthens relationships, and reinforces the behaviors that move organizations forward.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: Because every day, whether we realize it or not, we are influencing someone.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: The question is, what are we choosing to multiply?
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for joining me on another episode of Daily Influence.
