Speaker 1: Let us pray. And they were instant with loud voices,
• 0:06
Speaker 1: requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of
• 0:10
Speaker 1: them and of the chief priests prevailed. Luke 23.23 With
• 0:17
Speaker 1: every breath I take today, I am in awe at
• 0:21
Speaker 1: the abuse you suffered on my behalf, Jesus. When I
• 0:27
Speaker 1: was knee-deep in my sin and far from you, You
• 0:31
Speaker 1: saw my face, and you knew my name. As the
• 0:36
Speaker 1: nine tails whip rip through your flesh, I am forever
• 0:40
Speaker 1: grateful that with each stripe placed on your body, it
• 0:45
Speaker 1: represented the sin that you would free me from. I
• 0:50
Speaker 1: praise you, because it was through your pain and betrayal
• 0:54
Speaker 1: that I now live a life free from the chains
• 0:57
Speaker 1: and bondage of Satan. when life begins to deal me
• 1:01
Speaker 1: hard blows, let me look to you, Jesus, as the
• 1:06
Speaker 1: encouragement to my faith. Let me look to you, Jesus,
• 1:10
Speaker 1: to remind me that my pain and troubles are only
• 1:14
Speaker 1: momentary and that they will pale in comparison to the
• 1:18
Speaker 1: glory that awaits me. Thank you for standing trial so
• 1:24
Speaker 1: that I can stand in my new life free from
• 1:27
Speaker 1: Satan and free from the sting of death. In Jesus' name.
• 1:36
  Speaker 2: Amen.
• 1:36
  Speaker 1: Jesus on.
• 1:38
Speaker 2: Trial. In our last story, Jesus was taken to the
• 2:04
Speaker 2: chief priests to be questioned. Jesus was beaten, spat upon,
• 2:09
Speaker 2: yelled at, and denied by his closest follower, Peter. Handed
• 2:14
Speaker 2: over to Pilate, Jesus now stands on trial to be killed.
• 2:18
Speaker 2: Pilate is to decide whether Jesus of Nazareth should be
• 2:21
Speaker 2: put to death, as inspired by the Gospels.
• 2:27

• 3:16
Speaker 3: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In our last time together, we heard
• 3:24
Speaker 3: how Jesus was beaten, cursed, and mocked before he appeared
• 3:27
Speaker 3: before the Jewish Sanhedrin. He was asked if he claimed
• 3:30
Speaker 3: to be the Christ, the Messiah, and though he knew
• 3:33
Speaker 3: his words would cost him, he did not walk away
• 3:36
Speaker 3: from the truth. Jesus is, in fact, and claimed to
• 3:39
Speaker 3: be the Savior, the Son of God, the world's Messiah,
• 3:43
Speaker 3: the Jewish Messiah and the Savior of the world. This
• 3:47
Speaker 3: was the very thing that the Jewish leaders needed to
• 3:49
Speaker 3: hand him over to the Romans for execution. This, in
• 3:53
Speaker 3: their minds, was blasphemy, that he claimed to be God.
• 3:57
Speaker 3: We also learned that Peter denied the Lord three times,
• 4:00
Speaker 3: just as Jesus had predicted. And we learned how Judas,
• 4:04
Speaker 3: filled with shame and sin, made a tragic decision to
• 4:08
Speaker 3: end his own life and to end up in hell
• 4:11
Speaker 3: as the son of perdition. Today we'll hear about the
• 4:14
Speaker 3: trial of Jesus before Pilate. The Roman ruler seems reluctant
• 4:19
Speaker 3: to put Jesus to death, but the religious leaders and
• 4:22
Speaker 3: the crowds cry out for his death while demanding a
• 4:26
Speaker 3: murderer to be released. And while Jesus is clearly innocent,
• 4:31
Speaker 3: there's now no stopping what is about to happen, that
• 4:35
Speaker 3: our Lord would be condemned to die on a cross,
• 4:37
Speaker 3: a brutal, vicious death, an excruciating death for the sins
• 4:41
Speaker 3: of the world. Let's listen now to the reading of
• 4:45
Speaker 3: the Word of God.
• 4:49
Speaker 2: Jesus was placed before Pontius Pilate with an angry mob
• 4:52
Speaker 2: behind him. The Jewish officials had riled up the crowds
• 4:56
Speaker 2: to accuse Jesus and demand his death. Jesus stood before Pilate,
• 5:01
Speaker 2: looking into the crowd. Some of the same crowd that
• 5:04
Speaker 2: had once shouted, Hosanna in the highest, to the son
• 5:08
Speaker 2: of David, was now calling for the ending of his life. Pilate,
• 5:13
Speaker 2: irked by the crowd, asked, What charges do you bring
• 5:16
Speaker 2: against this man? In visceral anger, they replied, He is
• 5:21
Speaker 2: a criminal worthy of death. He claims to be king
• 5:25
Speaker 2: of the Jews and the promised savior. Pilate took Jesus
• 5:30
Speaker 2: back into the palace away from the mob to question him. So,
• 5:34
Speaker 2: is it as they say, he said. Underneath Pilate's regal
• 5:38
Speaker 2: and mocking tone was genuine curiosity. Who truly is this man,
• 5:44
Speaker 2: he thought. Are you king of the Jews, he asked.
• 5:48
Speaker 2: Did you say this because you were curious or because
• 5:51
Speaker 2: somebody told you? Jesus replied. Am I a Jew? Pilate answered.
• 5:58
Speaker 2: You people have your own nation, priests, and way of
• 6:01
Speaker 2: doing things. Yet they brought you here to me to
• 6:04
Speaker 2: have you killed. What did you do to make them
• 6:07
Speaker 2: so angry? Jesus looked at Pilate the same way he
• 6:10
Speaker 2: looked at many people, with an intensity intermingled with great
• 6:14
Speaker 2: compassion and love. My kingdom is not of this world,
• 6:20
Speaker 2: he said. If my kingdom were of this world, my
• 6:23
Speaker 2: servants would be fighting in the streets on my behalf,
• 6:26
Speaker 2: rather than cry out for my death. But my kingdom
• 6:30
Speaker 2: is not of this world. So you are a king,
• 6:35
Speaker 2: Pilate asked again, this time with more genuine intrigue in
• 6:39
Speaker 2: his voice. Jesus answered again, You say that I am
• 6:43
Speaker 2: a king. For this purpose I was born, to testify
• 6:48
Speaker 2: to the truth. Those who hear the truth hear me too. Pilate,
• 6:54
Speaker 2: confused yet deeply engaged, asked Jesus another question. What is truth?
• 7:01
Speaker 2: Yet this was a question he was actually asking himself.
• 7:05
Speaker 2: After this, he went back out to the crowd of
• 7:07
Speaker 2: Jews and said to them, I find no charges against
• 7:11
Speaker 2: this man. Not satisfied until they saw the streets painted
• 7:15
Speaker 2: red with Jesus' blood, the crowd continued in their uproar.
• 7:20
Speaker 2: Pilate sent Jesus to Herod, the governor over the land,
• 7:24
Speaker 2: to help judge him. Herod, entertained by the idea of Jesus,
• 7:29
Speaker 2: asked him to do tricks for him. Herod demanded signs
• 7:33
Speaker 2: as proof of Jesus' deity. Jesus remained silent, in solidarity
• 7:39
Speaker 2: towards what was about to take place. Herod and his
• 7:42
Speaker 2: soldiers mocked Jesus, dressing him up like a king. Pilate
• 7:47
Speaker 2: lobbied for Jesus' innocence, yet the outcry for his murder
• 7:51
Speaker 2: was too great to simply ignore. Pilate then brought forth
• 7:56
Speaker 2: a choice before the people. During the Passover festival, the
• 8:00
Speaker 2: governor was supposed to release a prisoner that was chosen
• 8:03
Speaker 2: by the people. He figured this was the best chance
• 8:06
Speaker 2: to release Jesus. He took Jesus, who was bruised from
• 8:10
Speaker 2: Herod's teasing, and brought him in front of the people.
• 8:14
Speaker 2: He also brought forth a man named Barabbas, a convicted
• 8:17
Speaker 2: terrorist and murderer. Pilate then gave the crowd a choice.
• 8:22
Speaker 2: Save the life of Jesus or Barabbas? Swiftly, as if
• 8:27
Speaker 2: the kindness and miracles of Jesus were wiped from their memory,
• 8:31
Speaker 2: they chose Barabbas. He was the first person Jesus took
• 8:35
Speaker 2: the place of. Barabbas was released and a call for
• 8:39
Speaker 2: death wailed from the audience. Pilate Knowing he could not
• 8:43
Speaker 2: convince the crowd of Jesus' innocence, poured water and washed
• 8:47
Speaker 2: his hands clean, refusing to be responsible for Jesus' death.
• 8:52
Speaker 2: The crowd, possessed by a similar hatred that once gripped
• 8:56
Speaker 2: the heart of Cain in ancient times, sought to spill
• 8:59
Speaker 2: the blood of the righteous. Jesus was taken into the
• 9:03
Speaker 2: courtyard to be beaten. Stripped and tied to a pillar
• 9:07
Speaker 2: stained from the dried blood of past criminals, Jesus knelt
• 9:10
Speaker 2: before the crowd, A man slowly approached the naked and
• 9:15
Speaker 2: vulnerable Jesus with a cord of nine tails in his
• 9:18
Speaker 2: right hand, a whip with nine leather cords, attached with
• 9:22
Speaker 2: shards of glass and bone. The first blow was a
• 9:26
Speaker 2: direct hit, sending pain up Jesus' spine and to his head.
• 9:32
Speaker 2: The second ripping his flesh open and exposed. The third
• 9:36
Speaker 2: tearing the muscle beneath. The fourth going down all the
• 9:40
Speaker 2: way to bone, whip to him. Jesus' blood was sprayed
• 9:46
Speaker 2: against the courtyard walls. Drenched in his own blood, Jesus
• 9:50
Speaker 2: knelt silently. The ancient words of Isaiah echoed in his
• 9:54
Speaker 2: mind with a silent reminder of what he was here
• 9:57
Speaker 2: to do. He was oppressed and beaten, yet he did
• 10:01
Speaker 2: not open his mouth. He was led like a lamb
• 10:05
Speaker 2: to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers,
• 10:08
Speaker 2: he was silent and did not open his mouth. After
• 10:13
Speaker 2: the whipping, Jesus was taken back with the soldiers. where
• 10:16
Speaker 2: they dressed him in a royal robe and adorned him
• 10:19
Speaker 2: with a crown of thorns. They teased him, taking a
• 10:23
Speaker 2: reed and hammering the thorns into his temple. They bowed
• 10:27
Speaker 2: to him in mockery and spat in his face, yet
• 10:30
Speaker 2: Jesus remained silent. The one who spoke the cosmos into
• 10:34
Speaker 2: existence and breathed life into mankind remained silent. Then Pilate
• 10:41
Speaker 2: took Jesus back before the crowds.' Have you had enough?'
• 10:45
Speaker 2: he yelled. I find no more guilt in him. Behold
• 10:49
Speaker 2: this man! When the crowd saw him again, they began
• 10:53
Speaker 2: yelling back, Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him! Pilate, beginning
• 11:01
Speaker 2: to grow sick of this, yelled back, Take him yourselves
• 11:05
Speaker 2: and crucify him. I find no guilt in him. The
• 11:09
Speaker 2: Jews answered back to him and said, By our law
• 11:13
Speaker 2: he should be killed. He has called himself God. Pilate
• 11:18
Speaker 2: took Jesus again away from the crowds. Desperately, Pilate asked,
• 11:23
Speaker 2: Where are you from? Jesus was silent. Why aren't you speaking?
• 11:28
Speaker 2: Don't you know that I hold the power to make
• 11:30
Speaker 2: you live or die? Jesus, peering through the crowd of thorns,
• 11:35
Speaker 2: still placed on his head and said, You have no
• 11:38
Speaker 2: authority over me. Whoever delivers me to you is in
• 11:42
Speaker 2: greater sin. Pilate could hear the yells of the crowd outside.
• 11:48
Speaker 2: If you release him, you are no friend of Caesar's.
• 11:52
Speaker 2: Afraid of these words and that rumors of disloyalty to
• 11:55
Speaker 2: Caesar would spread, Pilate took Jesus before the people again. Then,
• 12:01
Speaker 2: after his torn flesh had begun healing and attaching to
• 12:05
Speaker 2: the fabric, they tore off the robe and sent him
• 12:08
Speaker 2: back to the crowds to be crucified.
• 12:15
Speaker 3: As we begin today's scripture, Pilate is asking the crowds
• 12:18
Speaker 3: why they brought Jesus before him. He had to have
• 12:21
Speaker 3: a good reason to send the Lord to his death.
• 12:24
Speaker 3: The angry crowd yelled that Jesus claimed to be a
• 12:27
Speaker 3: king and savior of the Jews. But they also made
• 12:31
Speaker 3: false accusations, saying Jesus told them not to pay tribute
• 12:34
Speaker 3: to Caesar. Just as Satan the deceiver always does in
• 12:38
Speaker 3: twisting the truth, the crowds are now twisting the truth
• 12:42
Speaker 3: and misrepresenting what the Lord had said. A claim to
• 12:45
Speaker 3: be king over Caesar would have been a threat against
• 12:48
Speaker 3: the Roman Empire, punishable by death. Pilate was not convinced
• 12:53
Speaker 3: that Jesus was worthy of being put to death, so
• 12:56
Speaker 3: he asked Jesus if he was really the king. Jesus
• 13:00
Speaker 3: asked Pilate if this was his own ideas or if
• 13:03
Speaker 3: others had put him up to it. Pilate pressed further
• 13:07
Speaker 3: because he wasn't a Jew and he didn't know what
• 13:09
Speaker 3: Jesus could possibly have done to anger these people. And
• 13:12
Speaker 3: patient and as loving as ever, Jesus replied by explaining
• 13:17
Speaker 3: the nature of the kingdom of God. The kingdom of
• 13:20
Speaker 3: Jesus was not a kingdom that would overthrow the earthly
• 13:24
Speaker 3: rule of Rome. It was a different kind of kingdom,
• 13:27
Speaker 3: not of this world. It was the kingdom of eternal life,
• 13:31
Speaker 3: the kingdom of God. He was telling Pilate that his
• 13:35
Speaker 3: authority did not come from the world and the governments
• 13:38
Speaker 3: of this world, but in the authority of God himself.
• 13:42
Speaker 3: His truthfulness and gentleness and boldness certainly intrigued, even confused, Pilate.
• 13:48
Speaker 3: Jesus continued and said it was for this reason that
• 13:52
Speaker 3: he came to the world. His purpose was to testify
• 13:55
Speaker 3: to the truth. Pilate responds with a question that many
• 13:58
Speaker 3: are still asking today. What is truth? We do not
• 14:03
Speaker 3: know if Pilate was genuine in his search for truth
• 14:06
Speaker 3: or if he also, like the crowd, was simply mocking Jesus.
• 14:10
Speaker 3: But we do know that he saw no fault in
• 14:12
Speaker 3: Christ and told the crowds there was nothing for which
• 14:15
Speaker 3: he could charge or crucify this man. This is an
• 14:19
Speaker 3: important point to remember. Jesus had done nothing wrong. He
• 14:23
Speaker 3: was sinless. He had never broken God's law or man's law.
• 14:27
Speaker 3: He was completely innocent as he stood before the crowd.
• 14:32
Speaker 3: And yet his innocence was of no consequence to the
• 14:35
Speaker 3: people who would not relent until he was dead. So Pilate,
• 14:41
Speaker 3: hoping to get out of the situation, sent him to Herod,
• 14:43
Speaker 3: the Jewish governor of Galilee. Herod showed no interest in
• 14:47
Speaker 3: discerning the truth. He just wanted to see Jesus perform
• 14:51
Speaker 3: signs and wonders that he had been told about. Jesus
• 14:54
Speaker 3: would not perform for him, of course. So Herod mocked
• 14:57
Speaker 3: Jesus and then had him dressed up like a king
• 15:00
Speaker 3: and sent him back to Pilate. Pilate still did not
• 15:03
Speaker 3: see a reason to sentence Jesus to death. and hoped
• 15:06
Speaker 3: to release him by offering a pardon as was customary
• 15:09
Speaker 3: to the Roman governor to do during the Passover. So
• 15:13
Speaker 3: he brought two men before the crowds. One was Jesus,
• 15:16
Speaker 3: the innocent man with no faults. The other was a
• 15:19
Speaker 3: man named Barabbas, a criminal, an insurrectionist, and a murderer.
• 15:24
Speaker 3: He gave the crowds the choice to release one of
• 15:26
Speaker 3: the men. Do you choose Jesus or do you choose Barabbas,
• 15:30
Speaker 3: Pilate said. And the crowd made their choice. Give us Barabbas.
• 15:36
Speaker 3: In some ways, Barabbas, the insurrectionists who fought against Rome,
• 15:41
Speaker 3: represent what they really wanted Jesus to be, one who
• 15:44
Speaker 3: would set them free from oppression. What they didn't understand
• 15:49
Speaker 3: is that the death to which Jesus would die, the
• 15:52
Speaker 3: true Messiah, would free them from a much greater grip,
• 15:56
Speaker 3: the grip of sin and death. We then heard how
• 15:59
Speaker 3: our Lord endured beatings and lashings and his body is
• 16:02
Speaker 3: torn apart violently and viciously, without mercy. The physical pain,
• 16:08
Speaker 3: of course, is excruciating. Yet Jesus endures it silently, fulfilling
• 16:13
Speaker 3: the prophecy of Isaiah that said the Messiah would stand
• 16:16
Speaker 3: like a lamb led to the slaughter, not opening his mouth.
• 16:21
Speaker 3: Pilate tries one more time to spare the life of Jesus.
• 16:25
  Speaker 3: He says in Luke 23, verses 22 and 23, A
• 16:29
Speaker 3: third time he said to them, Why? What evil has
• 16:31
Speaker 3: he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death.
• 16:35
Speaker 3: I will therefore punish and then release him. But they
• 16:38
Speaker 3: were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified.
• 16:43
Speaker 3: And their voices prevailed. Finally, Pilate gave in to the
• 16:47
Speaker 3: will of the people and sentenced Jesus to death, although
• 16:50
Speaker 3: he knew that the one who stood before him was innocent.
• 16:54
Speaker 3: Jesus endured all of this, including the cross, because of
• 16:57
Speaker 3: God's unending and measurable love for us. This was the
• 17:01
Speaker 3: cup of suffering and pain that he cried out and
• 17:04
Speaker 3: asked the Father to take from him. And yet he
• 17:07
Speaker 3: submitted himself to the will of God, the perfect will,
• 17:11
Speaker 3: and the Lamb of God is slain. The Savior of
• 17:14
Speaker 3: the world is given as sacrifice so that we can
• 17:17
Speaker 3: have a relationship with God. You can have this relationship
• 17:21
Speaker 3: with God through Jesus Christ by believing in him, that
• 17:25
Speaker 3: he died for you and rose again so that you
• 17:27
Speaker 3: can have eternal life. Let's pray together. Lord, we thank
• 17:32
Speaker 3: you for your love for us. Thank you for Jesus,
• 17:35
Speaker 3: who gave your life on the cross, Lord, for us,
• 17:38
Speaker 3: that we might be saved and given eternal life. Thank
• 17:43
Speaker 3: you for what you did for us in dying that
• 17:46
Speaker 3: we might live. And we pray this in your saving name. Amen.
