- 0:00Welcome to Extra Innings on the sports Card clubhouse with the
- 0:04hit list, Jake, and that's Matt. What's going on, Matt?
- 0:08From Providence, I mean, come on.
- 0:09Providence, MO. You were.
- 0:10Matthew, you've been. Matthew, you've been.
- 0:12Matt from Providence, you've been.
- 0:14Yes, we're here. I'm not sure exactly when you're
- 0:17going to hear this. I know that the The Odd Couple
- 0:19will be making their extra innings debut.
- 0:21It's nice to can't. Believe we got.
- 0:22Bumped other duos in the stable I.
- 0:24Thought we were doing a good job.
- 0:26We are doing a good job. They're going to keep they're,
- 0:27we're going to keep keep being on there.
- 0:29It's just, it's a big tent. It's a big there's.
- 0:31It's that southern Texas drawl he's got.
- 0:33Texas. That was Matt who said that, by
- 0:37the way. I.
- 0:38Always say that. I always say Texas.
- 0:40Oh boy. All right, well, I we got some
- 0:43stuff to talk about. I have an, I have another
- 0:45hypothetical format and this is, I promise that this is more of
- 0:48a, this will be less of a, of a strange hypothetical, like half
- 0:55real, half not hypothetical that we've done on the hit list in
- 0:58the past. The question I'm going to ask
- 1:00Matt, and I'm going to ask the question 1st and then I'm going
- 1:02to kind of set up the situation that I'm thinking about is, is
- 1:06it ever OK to trim a card? Now this we're not just talking
- 1:11about and we can get into like altering cards, but trimming
- 1:14cards. I'm just curious about your
- 1:15thoughts. So let me set this up.
- 1:17There's a card that I'm interested in buying.
- 1:18And again, I'm, I'm, I'm not going to say what the card is
- 1:21exactly because I don't want other people to want, it's a,
- 1:25it's a bit of a rare card and I don't want other people to like
- 1:28know what it is 'cause I don't want other people to buy it.
- 1:29Just being selfish. So it's a, it's a strip card
- 1:33from the 20s that I'm interested in buying.
- 1:34I'm not usually a strip card guy, but this is one that I
- 1:36really like and that I think is interesting.
- 1:38This is one that's on eBay right now that's in APSA authentic
- 1:41slab. And the issue with the and it's,
- 1:44it's a card that I think I can get at a decent price.
- 1:47And the reason why is because it was cut very strangely from the
- 1:51strip. Basically there's like it's,
- 1:54it's jagged the, the way that the card was cut.
- 1:56Like basically there's part that juts out where you see the line
- 2:00and then there's more on the outside of the line and then it
- 2:02cuts juts back in like into the actual card itself and then juts
- 2:06back out. And it it does that on both
- 2:09sides, like on the other side too, it's jagged, cuts out.
- 2:12You see the outside of the line where you would cut it and it
- 2:15comes back like into the card. My thought was that if I buy
- 2:19this card, I would crack it out of the slab and in order to get
- 2:25it to either fit better because right now it's in the PSA slab
- 2:28that like it, it's floating around, it's in the baggie.
- 2:31It like floats around. It looks bad, looks terrible.
- 2:33My thought was I buy the card, I crack it out and I cut the
- 2:39outside. Like I basically cut along where
- 2:42you can still see the lines on the card to get it to get it
- 2:46into at again, because it's still going to be jagged because
- 2:49the because it is like cut inside the normal part of the
- 2:52card. But at least that way if I cut,
- 2:55if I cut off the sides of it, it would fit nicely in a nice and
- 2:59this is not a paid advertisement, but a nice one of
- 3:01those nice penny sleever magnetic holders that has that
- 3:05can fit like the smaller pre war cards like a tobacco card or
- 3:08that kind of thing. Or I could possibly send it to
- 3:11SGC. Now here's the thing.
- 3:13It would still get authentic. It would not change the grade of
- 3:16the card. It would still be authentic
- 3:18because of the fact that part of the actual card inside the line
- 3:20is missing. The thing is, is that it would
- 3:24improve the I appeal of the card to me.
- 3:27And again, this my long term plan would be not to sell it,
- 3:30but I would I would keep it. I would hold it.
- 3:33So my question to you is, is anything I've outlined to you
- 3:36unethical? No, but there's still problems,
- 3:44you know. So because because someone
- 3:48outside of your family, someday outside of my family is going to
- 3:51inherit my collection, they're not going to know the info on
- 3:54this card. And someday someone will receive
- 3:56the card and they won't know that you altered it more or
- 4:00altered it or, and then another thing.
- 4:03So you you're going to take a car that's been altered and
- 4:06you're going to alter it more, but the same category, right?
- 4:11So you're going to take a trimmed card, trim it more, no
- 4:15problem, right? What about if you take a trimmed
- 4:18card and you're? Yeah, you're holding.
- 4:20It crack it out trimmed card right now.
- 4:22I'm I'm sorry. Yeah.
- 4:23So you're able to holding a a a portrait Walter Johnson T2O6
- 4:26trimmed, I assume trimmed. Now if I take crack this card
- 4:30out and I clean it now do we have a problem?
- 4:36Yeah. That's where it gets strange for
- 4:40me. Can I trim an already trimmed
- 4:42card? Can I clean a trimmed card?
- 4:45Can I clean a cleaned card? Lot of questions.
- 4:48I I don't know if I'm the right one to ask, but like it becomes
- 4:51a problem. It becomes a problem.
- 4:54I think you can probably trim a trimmed card.
- 4:58Yeah, you can get it that that where like that just treads.
- 5:01And if you're 100% morally correct after that, I don't
- 5:05know. Yeah, inherently, like a strip
- 5:08card is a, a card that is unless it's if it's not part of the
- 5:12panel, it. Was made to.
- 5:13Be cut. It was made to be cut.
- 5:15Same thing as a same thing as like a posterior card or a
- 5:19Wheaties card like that. Let me ask a question So so I
- 5:22think I know the answer, but you know, let's say someone does a,
- 5:25takes a hand cut from the 20s, cuts it out, cuts you outside of
- 5:30the line. Now, is it OK for you to cut it
- 5:35to the right size and then send it for grading?
- 5:38I don't know is there a time? Stamp.
- 5:39Is there a time stamp on when the card can be cut to its
- 5:43proper size? Yeah.
- 5:46You know what I mean? These are.
- 5:47These are great questions. Like honestly, it's like, what
- 5:49is the, what's the line like? What is the ethical line like
- 5:52because. Of that I mean that's kind of a
- 5:54thing that Bill Mastro says about the T2 O 6 Wagner was that
- 5:58someone cut it from an uncut sheet which is a no no I know
- 6:01that and then he and then cut it too big so he cut it to the
- 6:05right size and it's like there isn't you know there's a few a
- 6:09bunch of moral quandaries with him involved but but yeah it's
- 6:12it's interesting trimming A trimmed card or.
- 6:15Yeah, yeah, I had at the National this past year.
- 6:19I bought a blue tint Ted Williams 1948 blue tint in like
- 6:25AI think it's an SGC 2 is mine and the guy that I was buying
- 6:28those. So those were basically strip
- 6:30cards too. Like those I guess came from a,
- 6:33from a, you know, they came from a, a long strip and you'd cut
- 6:35out the cards, whatever. And this one had like, I don't
- 6:38know how SGC, like how the grading companies figure the
- 6:41grades for those 'cause this one does have, it does have like all
- 6:44the lines, like you can see all of it.
- 6:46And it, it's still got a 2. And the guy that I bought it
- 6:48from was like, you know, I've seen people crack these out and
- 6:53like 1 like this, I've seen people crack out a card like
- 6:56this. They can, they, they trim it
- 6:58more and they can get a 7. And I'm like, I'm like, I'm not
- 7:02doing that. You know, like it's, it's, it's
- 7:05wild. It's crazy to me that like that
- 7:08is and I think there's some people that I feel like think
- 7:10that's completely normal. And that's.
- 7:12Completely OK and and that. The way I think a lot of things
- 7:15are OK that aren't OK the way. The way that that guy was
- 7:18talking about it made it sound like he's like, Oh yeah, why
- 7:20wouldn't you do that? And I'm.
- 7:22Like, well, yeah, because remember, a lot of people in
- 7:24this hobby are just looking at it for money or you could make
- 7:27more money, so let's do it. They don't care about the the
- 7:30rest. They don't care about the rest.
- 7:31They don't care that the next guy or the third guy from now
- 7:34that owns this card, you know, doesn't know that it's, you
- 7:38know, trims or this or that or. So I think that, yeah, it's
- 7:42always this line of like what is OK to do to a card and what's
- 7:45not OK to do. I think we've talked about it on
- 7:47the hit list before about we talked recently, we've talked
- 7:49recently about, you know, generally speaking, if you get a
- 7:52card, if you get a card back that's graded, that's authentic
- 7:54altered, you know, you're not going to get a full explanation,
- 7:58but odds are probably that card was was soaked, that card was,
- 8:01that card was probably cleaned. Right, that's.
- 8:04Exactly right. And, you know, is that wrong?
- 8:08I I don't know, like I think, I guess in the eyes of the grading
- 8:11companies, some of them say that yes, it is like apparently PSA,
- 8:14like if they they find out they there was this whole story about
- 8:17like a guy bragged about cleaning a card and then PSA
- 8:21found out about it and they canceled the search on the card.
- 8:25So it it is you can get in, in, in or like in quote UN quote
- 8:29trouble for it. Hobby trouble.
- 8:31Yeah, hobby trouble. But you know, is it bad to do
- 8:36the pantyhose trick on cards? You know, is it bad, you know,
- 8:39is, is that wrong? I've, I've done that, you know,
- 8:42and not not necessarily even for something that I was gonna sell,
- 8:45but just like I just, you know, there's clearly there's wax and
- 8:49dirt and gunk on this card and I'm just gonna like just gonna
- 8:52take a little, take a little. From what I understand, that's
- 8:54OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:56Who made that rule by the? Way but that I don't know was
- 9:00that Levi seven O 7 cards is that did he did he come like I'm
- 9:04just thinking of some OG Bill Mastro did they decide that it
- 9:07was OK do. That Brian Gray.
- 9:09Brian Gray. Yeah, I don't know.
- 9:12These are good questions. I'm just curious about what
- 9:14people think like if you're able to leave a comment on on YouTube
- 9:18or I know that podcast is maybe a little bit tougher, but just
- 9:21let us know what you think. Like I'm, I'm very curious about
- 9:23where is the line for people Is it is, is ever altering a card
- 9:28in any way, OK Or are there certain things that you that you
- 9:31can do that are fine? So, so going back, go ahead.
- 9:36Now let's say you crack out an altered card.
- 9:38You alter it further. Yeah.
- 9:41You send it out to get encapsulated.
- 9:43It comes back with a number. Do you send that card to bottles
- 9:48and ball cards? It always comes back.
- 9:52It always comes back to the overgrading do.
- 9:56You let him handle what needs to be done from there?
- 10:01Do you send it back yourself or on the checklist?
- 10:05Do you put like authentic only? Are you that morally like I
- 10:08would imagine you can just click.
- 10:10I would never trim a trim card like you, but yeah for you.
- 10:17So you're so you're feeling so going back, I was going to ask
- 10:19you going back to my original hypothetical, you think that
- 10:22that's you think that what I described is is not that I
- 10:26shouldn't do that or that like you wouldn't do that.
- 10:29No, no, I think it's OK. OK, all right, the the.
- 10:33I think we should. I think we should reach out to
- 10:36the BIC podcast and see if we can get bottles and ball cards
- 10:40on so we can ask him. OK, All right, we can.
- 10:43Yeah, we'll, we'll find. Things in the ball.
- 10:45Though Carlos. Carlos, let us know.
- 10:48No, I would say I think, I think you can trim a trimmed card
- 10:51better because once it's trims it's trimmed.
- 10:55But if you can't send it for a number grade.
- 10:57Right. No.
- 10:58Yeah, that's authentic only. That's a good, that's a good
- 11:01idea. Is that if I was to send that in
- 11:03to get re hold to get holded by SGC or different grading company
- 11:07I would just ask them to authenticate it and not give it
- 11:10to them? I think that's fine.
- 11:12I think so too, but again, the only the only thing that is like
- 11:16giving me pause is the fact that in my view I would be improving
- 11:21the I appeal of the card artificially.
- 11:25But and does that improve? Does that?
- 11:28Is that me improving? But it goes back to.
- 11:30This like. We're opening up the Pandora's
- 11:32box of like, how is that different than me cracking a
- 11:36card from SGC and sending it to PSA because that's, it could
- 11:40possible if it gets the same grade, it's going to have higher
- 11:41value. Or this whole I appeal sticker
- 11:45thing that everyone's been talking about that's bumping up
- 11:48the value of the card too. So like, again, it goes back.
- 11:50Where's that line? The problem too is look on this
- 11:56card, I'm holding up the Walter Johnson Portugal.
- 11:57The problem is on a card is let's say this card just
- 12:00authentic. We assume it's trimmed, but
- 12:04we're just asking a third party. We don't know, you know, and he
- 12:08might be that person might be wrong.
- 12:10They get grades wrong all the time.
- 12:11They get authenticity wrong all the time.
- 12:13That person might be wrong, you know.
- 12:15So there is that, that problem with grading.
- 12:18But if you intentionally try to pull the wool, that's no good.
- 12:21Yeah, I agree. All right, well, interesting
- 12:25discussion. Again, let us know below what
- 12:27you think about this and if you feel like I'm a terrible person
- 12:31for even suggesting this or if, if if it's OK.
- 12:36Let us know what you think. We appreciate your thoughts.
- 12:38Always. All right, always.
- 12:40Anything else, Matt? That's it.
- 12:42We're just gonna. That's it.
- 12:43That's it. That's the end, That's the end.
- 12:45We got bumped and we're gonna go short.
- 12:48This isn't good. This is a we're up in 13
- 12:50minutes. We try to shoot for like 15 to.
- 12:5150 Is that what it is? Yeah, well, close enough.
- 12:55All right, all right. Well, what?
- 12:57Are we saying Matt? Sad.
- 13:01Like comment, subscribe and collect.
- 13:03I just think, I think it was a short shot.
- 13:05I think we could have we could have brought more to the table
- 13:07today. I think, you know, you had a
- 13:11rough show last time and I think I might have I might have let us
- 13:13down this week. I really got us through because
- 13:17I had some great cards. Yes, check out this lean.
- 13:20This leans more audio. So we got to we got to be
- 13:23better. We got to be better.
- 13:24I think it was fine. Let's let the people decide, all
- 13:28right? All right.
