- 0:18Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Bars.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I feel like Chad Ryland's been better than Joey Slide.
- 0:23Speaker 1: He I wouldn't say that it's close. He has one
- 0:27Speaker 1: more make but sly hit of a live kick with
- 0:30Speaker 1: fifty seven yard of a one on.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I had the kickers overalls the down it really Yeah,
- 0:35Speaker 2: And so you still think this is an issue, Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 2: it's I put Chad Ryland on here just to mess
- 0:41Speaker 2: with you. I'm not talking about it. I don't.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So you didn't watch the kickers, You're just.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Going not even one bit no kicking yesterday and the
- 0:50Speaker 2: joint practices.
- 0:51Speaker 1: So we can't with nothing in the last two days.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Nothing the last two day. Oh yeah, I guess that's true. Yeah,
- 0:55Speaker 2: we can't critique the kickers from yesterday's joint practice with
- 0:59Speaker 2: the Eagles. We are are We have other things to
- 1:02Speaker 2: talk about that are much bigger than the kicker with
- 1:05Speaker 2: this team right now. Evan Lazar, Alex Barth Patriots Catch
- 1:08Speaker 2: twenty two with you for the next couple of hours.
- 1:10Speaker 2: We're obviously going to talk about yesterday's joint practice. We'll
- 1:13Speaker 2: get a little bit more into tomorrow night's preseason game
- 1:16Speaker 2: against the Philadelphia Eagles as well. Do three up, three down.
- 1:19Speaker 2: That's sort of the show for you today, And of
- 1:21Speaker 2: course we'll take your lovely calls and emails. Eight five
- 1:24Speaker 2: to five PATS five hundred is the phone number, and
- 1:27Speaker 2: web radio at Patriots dot com is the email address.
- 1:31Speaker 2: And before we get rolling, Hey Patriots fans, if you
- 1:33Speaker 2: want to see Toyota's best offers, including those not seen
- 1:36Speaker 2: on TV, go to buy a Toyota dot com. It's
- 1:39Speaker 2: Toyota's official website for deals for the official vehicle of
- 1:42Speaker 2: the New England Patriots, Toyota. Let's go places. And after yesterday,
- 1:47Speaker 2: alex I cracked open a nice bud Light after that practice.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It's easy to drink, it's easy to enjoy. Bud Light,
- 1:53Speaker 2: the official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots. All right,
- 1:57Speaker 2: just give me a second to get something off mych here.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Go for it.
- 2:01Speaker 2: You know how I do this, right? Yeah, I'm gonna
- 2:03Speaker 2: here's my opening monologue, my opening take of the show
- 2:06Speaker 2: about yesterday's practice for the Patriots offense. I would love
- 2:10Speaker 2: to come in here and just let it roll off
- 2:16Speaker 2: and just say, you know what, the Eagles, I look
- 2:19Speaker 2: this up. They are right now in some places have
- 2:22Speaker 2: the third best odds to win the Super Bowl this year,
- 2:25Speaker 2: third best odds in the league behind the Chiefs and
- 2:28Speaker 2: the forty nine ers to win the Super Bowl. The
- 2:29Speaker 2: Patriots are in that conversation, but for the number one
- 2:33Speaker 2: overall pick right there on the other side of the spectrum.
- 2:36Speaker 2: So there's a part of me that doesn't want to
- 2:43Speaker 2: completely kill them for what happened yesterday, because this is
- 2:46Speaker 2: two teams that are moving in very very different directions
- 2:49Speaker 2: and are in very very different places and their roster development.
- 2:53Speaker 2: The Eagles came into this practice yesterday and my first
- 2:57Speaker 2: thought as these teams were running onto the field is like,
- 3:00Speaker 2: there's Jalen Hurts, There's Aj Brown, There's Devonte Smith, Jordan Davis,
- 3:04Speaker 2: There's Saquon Bark Jordan Davis, there's Jalen Carter. Like you know,
- 3:09Speaker 2: there's all these studs on that side of the football,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and I'm like, the Patriots just don't match up well
- 3:14Speaker 2: against this team. This is a team that is very
- 3:17Speaker 2: very good against a team that's rebuilding, and there's definitely
- 3:22Speaker 2: some truth to that, but I can't completely let it go,
- 3:27Speaker 2: like I can't completely sure let the Patriots off the
- 3:29Speaker 2: hook that easily. And I also want to just put
- 3:33Speaker 2: the caveat on this by saying, this does not necessarily
- 3:38Speaker 2: mean that Drake may is going to be a bust
- 3:41Speaker 2: and Rod Mayo is going to be out of a
- 3:42Speaker 2: job in two years and all of this is terrible,
- 3:44Speaker 2: right and gonna go up in flames. It's one day.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It doesn't necessarily mean anything about the long term future
- 3:51Speaker 2: of what they're doing here. With that being said, I
- 3:53Speaker 2: want to read a few stats from you from the
- 3:55Speaker 2: charting that I did to practice yesterday, just to set
- 3:58Speaker 2: the scene what this was like for the Patriots offense yesterday,
- 4:02Speaker 2: which frankly was a bleep show, an absolute bleep show
- 4:07Speaker 2: on the offensive side of the football. And we've seen
- 4:10Speaker 2: some bad offense in summers. I don't love comparing because
- 4:14Speaker 2: it's hard, it's hard to get, but.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I gotta ask this. I don't know yesterday wasn't good.
- 4:20Speaker 1: There were days in twenty two that felt worse to me.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree, but this is yesterday was worse
- 4:29Speaker 2: than anything we saw last year. Yeah, I would agree.
- 4:31Speaker 2: You know, we were talking about after the show. Duce and
- 4:33Speaker 2: I were in Green Bay last year for the joint practices,
- 4:35Speaker 2: and we mentioned to each other, like, where this didn't
- 4:39Speaker 2: feel this bad in green Bay?
- 4:41Speaker 1: Green Bay last year was like encouraging pretty much.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah, especially on one of the days. It feels like
- 4:47Speaker 2: it felt like the Patriots were able to the offense
- 4:49Speaker 2: was able to make some plays down the field. You know,
- 4:52Speaker 2: DeVante Parker over Russell Douglas I think was like the
- 4:55Speaker 2: big play in that late portion of practice when it
- 4:59Speaker 2: was like full team will been on eleven.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Sure.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Anyways, anyways, here's some numbers for you. Give me numbers, Drake,
- 5:07Speaker 2: I almost said mac Jones because we're just talking about it.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Drake May and Jacoby Brissett drop back to pass forty
- 5:12Speaker 2: two times in practice yesterday.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Hang on, let me let me run this through the buttons.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Okay, forty two times. Yeah, they were sacked fourteen times.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Fourteen times.
- 5:24Speaker 1: You want the percentage on that, it's about a third, right,
- 5:26Speaker 1: it's exactly a third? Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's also from
- 5:30Speaker 1: what I've seen that that number might be conservative compared
- 5:32Speaker 1: to some of the other numbers I've seen.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so I had fourteen. I practice, sacks are always
- 5:39Speaker 2: a gray area. Yeah right, you're not tackling the quarterback
- 5:43Speaker 2: to the ground. So who knows if everybody greats them differently,
- 5:46Speaker 2: or Jacoby Brissett would squeak out or whatever. I had
- 5:48Speaker 2: fourteen Jacoby Brissett. Now both Now, one of them was
- 5:52Speaker 2: his fault, one of them wasn't.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And just for the record, for reference, the highest sack
- 5:56Speaker 1: rate in the league last year is just over eight percent.
- 5:58Speaker 1: The Jets in Miami were tied.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Yeah, Jacoby Brissett. One was his fault, one wasn't. Okay,
- 6:04Speaker 2: two interceptions on twenty four passes.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, one of those definitely not his fault. He hit
- 6:09Speaker 1: Austin Hooper right between the numbers. Austin Hooper caught it
- 6:12Speaker 1: like caught the ball. And then was it Nolan Davis
- 6:15Speaker 1: that hit him, not Nola Day's Nolan Smith. I think
- 6:17Speaker 1: that hit him and he just went right up in
- 6:20Speaker 1: the air. And I'm not blaming the safety. It doesn't
- 6:23Speaker 1: matter no he threw it. I'm just describing the play
- 6:25Speaker 1: so people understand what you're talking about.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Okay, this is the maybe the worst part to me
- 6:30Speaker 2: and imagine being worse than fourteen sacks on forty two
- 6:34Speaker 2: drop ACKs.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I actually don't know what you're gonna say here.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Nine penalties? Oh yeah, yeah, nine penalties?
- 6:41Speaker 1: Was it? There were three or four false starts.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Get false starts?
- 6:44Speaker 1: They had an ineligible man downfields and eligible jayvon Baker
- 6:47Speaker 1: and OPI.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Looked like a legal hands to the facer face mask
- 6:50Speaker 2: or something like that on one of the blockers.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I just remember four like there was flags ever see
- 6:57Speaker 1: dull penalties.
- 6:57Speaker 2: There was flags everywhere, and some of it, yes, was procedural,
- 7:01Speaker 2: to the point where.
- 7:02Speaker 1: No, the procedural stuff I worry more about, yeah than
- 7:05Speaker 1: the other stuff.
- 7:05Speaker 2: To the point where Gerrod Mayo at one point went
- 7:08Speaker 2: over to Alex van Pelt with his hands up in
- 7:10Speaker 2: the air like this, like what are we doing? Because
- 7:14Speaker 2: they couldn't they just like couldn't even get plays.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Off Shanhanshry Okay.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Then they also had three botch snaps exchanges, right, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 2: whether the ball just was a bad snap and the
- 7:27Speaker 2: ball just hit the ground immediately. And then there was
- 7:29Speaker 2: one with Jacoby Brissett where I think he was trying
- 7:31Speaker 2: to hand the ball off to Pop Douglas on the
- 7:32Speaker 2: Jets sweep and the ball hit the ground. Yeah, and
- 7:34Speaker 2: he had to just dive on it like a grade
- 7:36Speaker 2: and just yeah.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I think that was the case of being sped up
- 7:39Speaker 1: because the way the offensive line was looking. I don't
- 7:43Speaker 1: think he was sure he was going to have time
- 7:44Speaker 1: to hand that ball off. So fourteen sacks, yeah, two picks, yeap,
- 7:49Speaker 1: nine penalties, three botch snaps? Wait, fourteen plus two plus
- 7:54Speaker 1: nine plus five? Right?
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yes?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Okay, on how many snaps?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Forty two dropbacks?
- 8:00Speaker 1: Right, so you've encounted for thirty so far.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Correct. Then here was Drake May's last two minute. And
- 8:07Speaker 2: this this part really gets into all that kind of stuff.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Is just like, Okay, you had a bad day, you
- 8:15Speaker 2: were playing a really good team in practice, and you
- 8:16Speaker 2: got your butts kicked. All right, it happens. Okay, this
- 8:20Speaker 2: is the part where it starts to I get to
- 8:22Speaker 2: the point where these things are going to irk me
- 8:24Speaker 2: like that. Now I'm mad. Now, now I'm mad. Drake
- 8:28Speaker 2: May's final two minute in yesterday's practice, they put him
- 8:33Speaker 2: back out there on the field with the twos with
- 8:36Speaker 2: Antonio Mafi at center against the Eagles, starting defense, Yeah,
- 8:42Speaker 2: what are we trying to accomplish with that? So he
- 8:46Speaker 2: goes sacked by Nolan Smith, who goes right around Calvin
- 8:50Speaker 2: Anderson at left tackle for like at second two point
- 8:52Speaker 2: four seconds or something. Ridiculous sack by team. I wrote
- 8:57Speaker 2: team because there was multiple eagles in the backfield that
- 9:01Speaker 2: I'm not actually one hundred percent sure who.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Touched the team meeting at the quarterback.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, complete pocket collapse.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Couple of those, but a couple of those yesterday.
- 9:09Speaker 2: But an incomplete pass on a comeback round to Kaishan
- 9:11Speaker 2: Body that stood no chance. He threw the ball, you
- 9:14Speaker 2: know it was. It was wide right, but Kaishan Budi
- 9:17Speaker 2: was covered. The ball had to come out instantly. At
- 9:19Speaker 2: this point he sped up.
- 9:20Speaker 1: He put it well, I know, talking about the one
- 9:22Speaker 1: he put like well into the sideline. Yeah, yeah, that
- 9:24Speaker 1: was I call it a throwaway.
- 9:26Speaker 2: It was. It was borderline throwaway.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I thought it was a throwaway. I actually didn't even
- 9:29Speaker 1: think it was a target.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And then on the last play for Drake Mason, right
- 9:33Speaker 2: now he's over three.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, on the last.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Play he goes four and out, Nikobe Dean comes in
- 9:38Speaker 2: up the middle, blows up the running back on the
- 9:40Speaker 2: way to the quarterback and sack.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 2: So we have three sacks and four play span and
- 9:45Speaker 2: one incomplete pass against the Eagles starting defense against the
- 9:49Speaker 2: Patriots twos, which I still don't really understand. Why what
- 9:53Speaker 2: the point of that is. So my guess where I'm
- 9:56Speaker 2: getting at with this is, first of all, you know,
- 10:00Speaker 2: I have to be innocent till proven guilty. I have
- 10:03Speaker 2: to give them the benefit of the doubt, the coaching staff,
- 10:07Speaker 2: the front office that I can't come on this show
- 10:11Speaker 2: in May. Yeah, already screaming about the offensive line before.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I did that for both of us, before the pads come.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I can't.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I'm not in a position to do that. Yeah, I
- 10:21Speaker 1: have to watch it first.
- 10:21Speaker 2: I have to give them that courtesy that let's put
- 10:24Speaker 2: the pads on, let's see what it looks like.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I usually too, I usually do that too. That's how worried.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Okay, at this point, if you do, you want the truth,
- 10:33Speaker 2: the truth is I'm ordering the code read. This is
- 10:36Speaker 2: Defcon five. This is they need to get into a
- 10:39Speaker 2: meeting room with the offensive coaching staff and all of
- 10:42Speaker 2: them need to have a coming to Jesus about what
- 10:44Speaker 2: the heck they're doing. Up front. They can't block anybody. Okay,
- 10:47Speaker 2: that's the starting point. Vederian Low at left tackle is
- 10:51Speaker 2: not working. It's not working. The line looked like it
- 10:54Speaker 2: was making some early signs of hope, progress, whatever you
- 10:58Speaker 2: want to call it. When they have Caden Wallace up
- 11:01Speaker 2: with the top group at left tackle and Chooks a
- 11:02Speaker 2: Corf on the right side. That was two weeks ago.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Now it was like twelve practices ago or something like that.
- 11:08Speaker 2: They they haven't gone back to it. They they don't
- 11:12Speaker 2: seem to want to go whatever the case may be.
- 11:14Speaker 2: They don't want to go back to it. But Darien
- 11:16Speaker 2: the left tackle is not working. They need to move
- 11:19Speaker 2: away from that. Uh you finish your point. Sorry, No,
- 11:22Speaker 2: it's okay. I would also say that the one silver
- 11:27Speaker 2: lining or bright spot on the line so far has
- 11:29Speaker 2: been Laden Robinson, who I think has been decent. It
- 11:32Speaker 2: was good in the game last week on Thursday Night.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Well what about Mike on win?
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm talking about guys that you're not like
- 11:38Speaker 2: expecting to.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Carry on to surprise, So not the typical starters.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Yeah, right, Like I can't worry about David Andrews and
- 11:45Speaker 2: Mike on Win right now, right, right? Okay, So the
- 11:48Speaker 2: way I look at it, they're at they're at red alert,
- 11:50Speaker 2: they're at def Con five. They need to do something upfront.
- 11:53Speaker 2: They either need to sign somebody off the street like
- 11:54Speaker 2: a Donovan Smith and see and roll with that and
- 11:57Speaker 2: see if that works. Or they need to move it
- 12:00Speaker 2: around right, they need to reconfigure.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Yep.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So there's a couple of ways they could do it.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Maybe Leyden Robinson goes into the starting lineup and Mike
- 12:09Speaker 2: on wen who goes back out to right tackle and
- 12:11Speaker 2: choofs the core force flips back to left tackle. Maybe
- 12:16Speaker 2: you just elevate Caden Wallace up to the top group
- 12:18Speaker 2: again and he is at left tackle and everybody else
- 12:21Speaker 2: stays the same. But something has to change. You cannot
- 12:25Speaker 2: have Vedarian Lowe as a starting left tackle for this
- 12:27Speaker 2: team in week one. Yeah, and I'm not trying to
- 12:30Speaker 2: like single him out and like pick on him necessarily,
- 12:33Speaker 2: but it just the five guys that they're rolling with
- 12:35Speaker 2: right now, the combination doesn't work and four out of
- 12:37Speaker 2: five of them need to play because that's that's the plan.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Well, let me let me put it this way. It's
- 12:42Speaker 1: not to pick on on Darren Lowe. He shouldn't be
- 12:47Speaker 1: in this spot, right. He's not an NFL starter. Yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and what you're seeing on the field is just confirmation
- 12:53Speaker 1: of that. I don't think anybody was expecting to be
- 12:55Speaker 1: This isn't They're not in this spot because players are
- 12:59Speaker 1: underperforming compared to expectations. They're in this spot because players
- 13:05Speaker 1: are performing the same way they've always played with. The
- 13:08Speaker 1: tape tells us all of them, and that's there's good
- 13:11Speaker 1: and bad to that, but that's why they're in the spot.
- 13:13Speaker 1: So I do think they should change something, yea. I
- 13:17Speaker 1: you know, Mike ohen Went who out to tackle is interesting.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I do wonder if they like the group on the
- 13:21Speaker 1: interior right now and don't want to start moving pieces.
- 13:24Speaker 1: And I was on with Taylor Kyles this morning and
- 13:27Speaker 1: he brought this up, and this is something you've talked about.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Mike go and Went, who was a good tackle, but
- 13:32Speaker 1: he's a great guard. Would you agree with that assessment?
- 13:36Speaker 2: Yes?
- 13:37Speaker 1: So do they if they move Michael and Went into tackle?
- 13:42Speaker 1: Do they have any great offensive linemen?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Probably not, but it still might be the most stable,
- 13:49Speaker 2: So I know, but I wonder if it's not like
- 13:52Speaker 2: a five man.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I get what you're saying, I just wonder if that
- 13:55Speaker 1: plays into the equation. No, I think I'm knowing you
- 13:58Speaker 1: have an anchor.
- 14:00Speaker 2: What plays into the equation is that they are looking
- 14:02Speaker 2: at it and saying andrews. So that is a stagmos
- 14:07Speaker 2: of that too, like, Okay, we got the interior to work,
- 14:11Speaker 2: let's not touch that because the last thing you need
- 14:13Speaker 2: is to move Michael and winnow outside. It's a little
- 14:16Speaker 2: bit of a process for him to get back at
- 14:18Speaker 2: it at right tackle. And also maybe Leyden Robinson as
- 14:21Speaker 2: a rookie doesn't take the step with the top unit.
- 14:24Speaker 1: You think, now now it's a real fire drill. And
- 14:27Speaker 1: I'm not saying that would happen, but I think that's
- 14:28Speaker 1: part of the equation. And that's why. And this is
- 14:30Speaker 1: what I was gonna say, Evan when I almost cut
- 14:31Speaker 1: you off. They should change it. I don't think they're
- 14:36Speaker 1: going to before week one because they're simply out of time.
- 14:40Speaker 1: And if you start moving pieces now, you're not gonna
- 14:44Speaker 1: be able to get guys ready for week one. Gerrod
- 14:46Speaker 1: Mao a couple of times this summer, when asked about
- 14:48Speaker 1: finalizing the offensive line, had given this second preseason game
- 14:52Speaker 1: is kind of the.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Cutoff point and said, we want to know if they're
- 14:55Speaker 2: they're just beyond that point.
- 14:56Speaker 1: But but listen, but let me let me finish the point.
- 14:59Speaker 1: After that second preseason game is when they want to know.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And there's a reason for that because after the second
- 15:05Speaker 1: preseason game, it's not really training camp anymore. You're sort
- 15:10Speaker 1: of done with the testing and evaluation and player development stage.
- 15:13Speaker 1: You're starting to get ready for Week one. And you
- 15:16Speaker 1: can't do that if you're rotating the offensive line. And
- 15:19Speaker 1: this is why it's so frustrating to me that they
- 15:22Speaker 1: stuck with this Vaderian Low group as long as they
- 15:25Speaker 1: mean to pick on him. But that's the big change.
- 15:27Speaker 1: That's what's so frustrating about them sticking with the Vaderian
- 15:29Speaker 1: Low group as long as they did. Remember I said
- 15:31Speaker 1: before the Panthers game, Evan, all right, you gave them
- 15:33Speaker 1: a week. You're gonna give them the game. Let's see
- 15:35Speaker 1: what it looks like. And they did that, and that
- 15:36Speaker 1: was fine. You gave him a full week. You let
- 15:38Speaker 1: them build some continuity. It clearly wasn't working after that game.
- 15:42Speaker 1: This would have been the week to go back into
- 15:44Speaker 1: the lab, can reconfigure things again, experiment, change things and
- 15:48Speaker 1: see what works. But they're at that cutoff point, which
- 15:52Speaker 1: is objectively a logical cutoff point. Now, I think they
- 15:55Speaker 1: kind of have to roll with this at least three
- 15:57Speaker 1: weeks one and two and then reevaluate and when you
- 16:00Speaker 1: get into the season, maybe move some things around. And
- 16:02Speaker 1: it's probably a situation like it was last year, like
- 16:04Speaker 1: it was the year before that, that it's gonna be
- 16:06Speaker 1: week five, six seven, and mic wh Win, who's gonna
- 16:09Speaker 1: move out to tackle and things will settle down and
- 16:11Speaker 1: you'll have some more time to work with Laden Robinson,
- 16:13Speaker 1: get him ready there. So I don't disagree with anything
- 16:16Speaker 1: you said. I just think the damage is done. Like
- 16:20Speaker 1: they're not going to get that time back that they
- 16:22Speaker 1: spent on this line. And at a certain point you
- 16:24Speaker 1: got to dance with hubrungya. And if they start moving
- 16:27Speaker 1: pieces around now, you're risking I know people think it
- 16:31Speaker 1: can't get worse, but you're risking a real disaster come
- 16:34Speaker 1: week one because at the very least, at the very least,
- 16:38Speaker 1: the one thing this group has is continuity, and you're
- 16:42Speaker 1: risking the same quality product without continuity if you start
- 16:45Speaker 1: moving pieces around now. And I know that sounds a
- 16:47Speaker 1: little hypocritical. What's the difference between changing now versus changing
- 16:50Speaker 1: weeks four or five. You don't Bill would do this.
- 16:55Speaker 1: They would rotate the tackles week one, and you can
- 16:58Speaker 1: do some of that, and you can are moving pieces
- 17:00Speaker 1: around within the games and see what things look like
- 17:03Speaker 1: in the games. But you don't want to not have
- 17:06Speaker 1: a line set. You don't want to go into week
- 17:09Speaker 1: one with a line that hasn't spent significant time together.
- 17:12Speaker 1: That's just asking for trouble.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Okay, So I agree with everything you said. That's the
- 17:18Speaker 2: short term panic button of what's going on right now.
- 17:22Speaker 2: That's the week one conversation. That's September twenty twenty. Let
- 17:25Speaker 2: me get to it.
- 17:26Speaker 1: It's a little longer, Okay, go ahead.
- 17:27Speaker 2: My bigger concern about what's going on right now is
- 17:30Speaker 2: what's going on with Drake May. Yeah, because that's the
- 17:34Speaker 2: franchise right there. Like, I really don't care too much
- 17:37Speaker 2: about September twenty twenty four. I just don't like I
- 17:40Speaker 2: want them to be competitive. I want it to be
- 17:42Speaker 2: a watchable product. It's more fun for us if it's
- 17:44Speaker 2: watchable and it's competitive and all that kind of stuff.
- 17:47Speaker 2: But it's not my biggest.
- 17:48Speaker 1: So sorry to backtrack real quick before you get into
- 17:50Speaker 1: Drake may Than, because someone's to asking you said, you're
- 17:52Speaker 1: into the idea of them signing a veteran.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Now, if what we're seeing is truly accurate, like if
- 17:59Speaker 2: they're watching the film back of practice and it truly
- 18:01Speaker 2: looks as bad on the film as it looks watching live,
- 18:04Speaker 2: then then I at this point they might have to
- 18:07Speaker 2: consider it.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I think it has to be DJ Humphries, if you
- 18:09Speaker 1: go that way, I think he's the Charles Leno's healthy,
- 18:12Speaker 1: Charles Leno's coming off hip surgery in March.
- 18:14Speaker 2: DJ Humphries is coming off an injury too.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's an ACL, and I know that sounds bad,
- 18:18Speaker 1: and none of the there's a reason all these guys
- 18:19Speaker 1: are available. Yeah, ACL is relatively recoverable now, especially for alignment.
- 18:25Speaker 1: How do you feel about a guy and and he
- 18:26Speaker 1: tore his ACL in December? How you feel about about
- 18:29Speaker 1: a guy that had hip surgery in March? Yeah, and
- 18:31Speaker 1: that would be Charles Leonel Leno. David Bactiari can't get
- 18:34Speaker 1: on that he has been in field three years. Donovan
- 18:37Speaker 1: Smith is healthy, but you go back and you look
- 18:40Speaker 1: at the way he played last year, if he takes
- 18:42Speaker 1: another drop off like he did from twenty two to
- 18:44Speaker 1: twenty three, I actually don't think he's an upgrade.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not totally. This is again where I don't
- 18:51Speaker 2: feel like those guys are upgrades necessarily. So I'm not
- 18:54Speaker 2: like I think. I think Humphreys has the best chance
- 18:57Speaker 2: to be a marginal upgrade. But I'm with you, I'm
- 18:59Speaker 2: not pounding the day. But this is where, again you
- 19:01Speaker 2: talk about the time they've already spent. Yeah, they brought
- 19:03Speaker 2: one of these guys in at the end of July
- 19:05Speaker 2: or at the beginning of August, you'd have a better idea. Yeah.
- 19:08Speaker 2: So my biggest concern right now is what's going on
- 19:11Speaker 2: with Drake may because it's not so much that I
- 19:16Speaker 2: I don't know where he's at. I honestly don't know.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I couldn't tell you where he's at because he played
- 19:22Speaker 2: six naps in the preseason game last week. We haven't
- 19:24Speaker 2: had a show since then. I know that that's kind
- 19:26Speaker 2: of water under the bridge at this point. But he
- 19:28Speaker 2: didn't play in the preseason game last week. For all
- 19:30Speaker 2: intents and purposes. He gets into the practice yesterday and
- 19:35Speaker 2: his line is just completely overwhelmed with what the Eagles
- 19:37Speaker 2: are doing upfront, and he really just didn't have a
- 19:39Speaker 2: ton of chances. So for me to sit here and say,
- 19:43Speaker 2: how is he mentally progressing, you know, going through reading coverage,
- 19:47Speaker 2: going through progressions like timing rhythm, I don't know, And
- 19:51Speaker 2: that's terrifying. That's terrifying that we can't. This is what
- 19:55Speaker 2: all of us had fear feared about putting him in
- 19:59Speaker 2: during the sea.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Don't say all of us you wanted to start in
- 20:02Speaker 1: week one and we went back and people got mad
- 20:05Speaker 1: in the YouTube comments we were arguing, okay, so much.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Sure, whatever, I'm just saying. The point is is that
- 20:12Speaker 2: we don't know where Drake lay is at because he's
- 20:15Speaker 2: not given a chance out there right now. And I
- 20:18Speaker 2: know everybody's gonna hear that and say, well, why don't
- 20:20Speaker 2: they just put him in front of the ones, And Okay,
- 20:22Speaker 2: I hear you all on that. But to say sit
- 20:26Speaker 2: here and say he's he's so far away, like he's
- 20:29Speaker 2: he's not even close to playing yet, I just don't
- 20:31Speaker 2: know how you could say that, because does he even
- 20:34Speaker 2: have a chance to go through a progression right now?
- 20:37Speaker 2: Like could he really have a chance at going one, two, three,
- 20:40Speaker 2: and like hitting a backside dig route right now.
- 20:42Speaker 1: The few times he's done he's the few times he's
- 20:45Speaker 1: had that, he has done it. Yeah, but it's just
- 20:47Speaker 1: so few and far between that you don't know if
- 20:49Speaker 1: it's a consistency thing or why.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I am sure that there are things pre snap and
- 20:56Speaker 2: within the first couple beats of plays where he needs
- 20:59Speaker 2: to be found master or if he's not quite there
- 21:01Speaker 2: yet mentally in terms of configuring things and setting mike
- 21:05Speaker 2: points and all that kind I'm sure there's a bunch
- 21:07Speaker 2: of that kind of stuff going on where if he
- 21:11Speaker 2: was a little bit further along in that capacity, maybe
- 21:14Speaker 2: he would be able to get them into better positions
- 21:16Speaker 2: to run plays more successfully. I am allowing for that completely,
- 21:20Speaker 2: but that's hard to ask for a rookie quarterback like that.
- 21:23Speaker 2: That's not gonna happen from ninety nine percent of rookie quarterbacks.
- 21:27Speaker 2: What I'm seeing out of him in practice right now
- 21:29Speaker 2: is that it's incomplete, like it's I don't know what
- 21:33Speaker 2: he is. I'm hoping that we're going to see a
- 21:35Speaker 2: little bit more tomorrow night, and maybe that will give
- 21:37Speaker 2: us an indication of where he's at. But right now.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I just mentioned the hurry up, like that hurry up
- 21:45Speaker 2: was worthless, like it didn't teach us anything, he didn't
- 21:49Speaker 2: get anything out of it. And that part, to me,
- 21:52Speaker 2: is even more worrisome than the fact that it might
- 21:57Speaker 2: not be great upfront for the first you know, for
- 21:59Speaker 2: this season, or even the entire year. Maybe I was
- 22:02Speaker 2: gonna say September, but maybe even in the entire year.
- 22:05Speaker 2: He's at a point now where the conditions, the environment
- 22:10Speaker 2: is just not conducive for him to be developed in
- 22:12Speaker 2: a way that we can come out tangibly and say
- 22:16Speaker 2: when people ask me, where's Drake May at right, I
- 22:19Speaker 2: honestly couldn't tell you.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Yeah, so I got to ask. I did a mail
- 22:22Speaker 1: bag last night on ninety eight five the sports sub
- 22:24Speaker 1: dot com, and I was asked, I'm trying to find
- 22:26Speaker 1: the exact question, is Drake May's future in trouble since
- 22:30Speaker 1: the offensive line is struggling, And I said, it doesn't
- 22:33Speaker 1: have to be. It doesn't have to be because this
- 22:37Speaker 1: should not be Drake May's offensive line, like they should
- 22:40Speaker 1: go out and improve it. I'm talking long term. I'm
- 22:43Speaker 1: not talking about DJ Humphries. I'm talking about after this
- 22:46Speaker 1: year now, his timeline may be delayed, which I think,
- 22:49Speaker 1: Evan is what you're talking about, that we're not going
- 22:52Speaker 1: to get an answer on him. We're not going to
- 22:53Speaker 1: get a referendum on him as soon as we maybe
- 22:55Speaker 1: otherwise would because the offensive line doesn't allow that. But
- 23:00Speaker 1: if they handle this correctly, and I don't love the
- 23:02Speaker 1: spot they've put Drake Man to begin with, I think
- 23:04Speaker 1: it's very clear where I stand on that in terms
- 23:07Speaker 1: of the investments they made in the offensive line this
- 23:09Speaker 1: offseason or lack thereof, they can still go out and
- 23:13Speaker 1: make those investments and get them a line and put
- 23:15Speaker 1: them in a position to succeed. But that also comes
- 23:18Speaker 1: with delaying the timeline, and that means dealing with pressure
- 23:21Speaker 1: from the media, from the fans, perhaps inside the building
- 23:24Speaker 1: to get Drake made going because if they put him
- 23:27Speaker 1: behind this offensive line, I don't think it's gonna look
- 23:29Speaker 1: good now, and I think it's gonna hurt him. So
- 23:31Speaker 1: it is tough that you don't know right now, and
- 23:33Speaker 1: the reality is, at least as I see it, we're
- 23:36Speaker 1: probably gonna have to go through maybe an entire year
- 23:40Speaker 1: that we just don't know that we can't say whether
- 23:43Speaker 1: or not he's good or bad, because we're not going
- 23:46Speaker 1: to get the full picture. And if he goes in
- 23:50Speaker 1: early and struggles, then you look at, well, is this
- 23:52Speaker 1: doing lasting damage? So what you're saying, yeah, it's tough,
- 23:57Speaker 1: and you might go into next off season with quarterbacks
- 24:00Speaker 1: still essentially an unknown. I don't think you can go
- 24:02Speaker 1: out and at a guy but well, or are we
- 24:06Speaker 1: building this is Drake May the guy we can build
- 24:08Speaker 1: this around, like you might go in with that because
- 24:10Speaker 1: of where the offensive line is at.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it just it feels to me as though there's
- 24:15Speaker 2: one thing coming from the team right now about Drake May.
- 24:18Speaker 2: And we had Alex Van Pelt addressed the season ticket
- 24:22Speaker 2: holders on Sunday and I was there asking him questions.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Mike Reeves tweeted out the exact quote, and he was
- 24:29Speaker 2: very complimentary of Drake May's said that, you know, they've
- 24:31Speaker 2: cleaned up his footwork, he's going through progressions a lot
- 24:35Speaker 2: faster than maybe they expected, like all these kinds of things.
- 24:38Speaker 2: And I'm not calling him a liar. I'm just saying
- 24:43Speaker 2: I don't know how you could tell. And they obviously
- 24:46Speaker 2: have a knowledge of the game and a knowledge of
- 24:48Speaker 2: what's going on out there. That's double that of the
- 24:52Speaker 2: people in this room, right right. But the point of
- 24:54Speaker 2: being is that he is at a point now where, well,
- 24:58Speaker 2: first of all, they're asking him to play within the
- 25:01Speaker 2: pocket in practice. I asked him this about I asked
- 25:03Speaker 2: him about this yesterday, and he said, in practice, you
- 25:07Speaker 2: can't really simulate all the off script improvisational stuff like
- 25:11Speaker 2: I'm not gonna break out of the pocket, spin move
- 25:15Speaker 2: a sack and then get out on the perimeter and
- 25:17Speaker 2: start making things happen with my legs, Like that's not
- 25:20Speaker 2: really what we're the goal of practices, Like, that's not
- 25:23Speaker 2: what we're really trying to do in practice. So they're
- 25:25Speaker 2: already making him play a little bit left handed and
- 25:28Speaker 2: work on things he's not necessarily good at yet or
- 25:30Speaker 2: not necessarily all the way there yet with so it
- 25:33Speaker 2: was always going to be bumpy as he kind of
- 25:35Speaker 2: goes through this developmental phase of his career. But they
- 25:38Speaker 2: also are putting him in an environment where the people
- 25:40Speaker 2: in front of him can't block for him, and frankly,
- 25:43Speaker 2: like the receivers haven't really been giving him a ton
- 25:45Speaker 2: of separation either, because their best receiver in terms of
- 25:49Speaker 2: separation all that is pop obviously he gets all of
- 25:52Speaker 2: his reps with Jakobe were sett and the starters. Hunter
- 25:55Speaker 2: Henry has been out there the last couple of days,
- 25:56Speaker 2: but he gets all of his reps which Kobe were
- 25:58Speaker 2: set and the starters. Those are your best pass catchers,
- 26:01Speaker 2: and Drake may doesn't throw to either of them right now.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Usually he gets a Kashawan Boody, the rookies, you know,
- 26:08Speaker 2: Polk Baker, and then maybe some combination of like Rager
- 26:11Speaker 2: Thornton will mix in there as well with him. That's
- 26:14Speaker 2: usually the guys in the that tight end. It's pet Way,
- 26:17Speaker 2: will Cox, you know, those types of players. No offense
- 26:20Speaker 2: to any of those guys. But that's not necessarily helping
- 26:23Speaker 2: him out either. So I know that people think that
- 26:25Speaker 2: I'm making excuses for him, probably you know the anti
- 26:28Speaker 2: Drake made people hear a bunch of excuses. But to me,
- 26:31Speaker 2: it's not even that I don't know if he's good
- 26:33Speaker 2: or bad, like it's incomplete, like I I wish I
- 26:36Speaker 2: could give you a judgment, like I wish I could
- 26:38Speaker 2: sit here and tell you. And this to me is
- 26:40Speaker 2: problematic because we're headed in a direction now where he's
- 26:44Speaker 2: probably gonna sit a while in his rookie season. If
- 26:48Speaker 2: he sits a while in his rookie season, once you
- 26:51Speaker 2: get in season, all those reps in practice are gonna
- 26:54Speaker 2: be going to Jcobe prisct' because he's got to getting
- 26:57Speaker 2: ready to play the game on Sunday, so they're just
- 26:59Speaker 2: not there. So these this was his opportunity to show
- 27:02Speaker 2: real development from start to finish a training camp. And
- 27:05Speaker 2: now hopefully we get to see him more, like I
- 27:08Speaker 2: keep saying in the preseason games, and then I could
- 27:10Speaker 2: get on on the film and really grate out the
- 27:12Speaker 2: film and see exactly how it looks with the ability
- 27:15Speaker 2: to watch it back. But it's disappointing. It's frustrating that
- 27:19Speaker 2: we are at such an incomplete impast this far into
- 27:22Speaker 2: camp with Drake May that we just don't really know
- 27:24Speaker 2: what he is yet. And there's you can see it
- 27:26Speaker 2: with the eyes that you know he's got physical tools,
- 27:29Speaker 2: he's got ability, he's got size, all the things we
- 27:31Speaker 2: knew already. I feel like we've learned no new information
- 27:34Speaker 2: about him, and I shouldn't be saying that like we
- 27:37Speaker 2: should have. We should have learned a lot of new
- 27:39Speaker 2: information about him, and I feel like we have none
- 27:42Speaker 2: at this point in training camp, and that to me
- 27:45Speaker 2: is even more worrisome than the fact that they can't
- 27:48Speaker 2: block the Eagles front on August thirteenth or whatever it was.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean agree with all that. I
- 27:55Speaker 1: don't know. I don't know much. Add I get it.
- 27:57Speaker 1: It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just the known
- 28:00Speaker 1: as frustrating. It doesn't mean Drake May is bad. It's
- 28:03Speaker 1: just frustrating from the outside looking in, Like because I
- 28:06Speaker 1: think people hear that and think, oh, that means Drake
- 28:09Speaker 1: May isn't good. That's not necessarily case. We just we
- 28:13Speaker 1: don't know what he is. Like you said, we haven't
- 28:15Speaker 1: learned anything about him.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Is this the whole handling of Drake May in the
- 28:19Speaker 2: whole summer that this has me has me irked at
- 28:22Speaker 2: this point.
- 28:23Speaker 1: I mean I was irked about it back in March.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I'm kind of.
- 28:26Speaker 2: It's griding my gears because it's not even just about
- 28:29Speaker 2: the offensive line though, Like I'm not talking about the personnel.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I'm talking about how they've handled how they've managed his
- 28:35Speaker 2: reps and handled his routine on a day to day basis.
- 28:39Speaker 2: He doesn't play in the preseason game he got I
- 28:43Speaker 2: believe like half as many reps yesterday as Jacoby Brissett
- 28:46Speaker 2: did in a full eleven on eleven's. Yeah, he doesn't
- 28:48Speaker 2: get any opportunities with the ones. The door was never
- 28:52Speaker 2: open at all for him to make a push ever.
- 28:56Speaker 2: And I'm not even just talking about week one. I
- 28:58Speaker 2: don't know how you can look at where we're at
- 29:00Speaker 2: right now and expect him to play before Halloween like
- 29:04Speaker 2: this is now. We're at the point where it's gonna
- 29:06Speaker 2: go behind closed doors here soon and they're gonna have
- 29:08Speaker 2: to see some real progress from him and then and
- 29:11Speaker 2: behind closed doors settings, yeah, for the next couple of
- 29:14Speaker 2: weeks months that to the point where maybe he can
- 29:17Speaker 2: play in like the second half of the year, you know, right,
- 29:20Speaker 2: And that that to me did not need We didn't
- 29:22Speaker 2: need to get here, We didn't need to get to
- 29:23Speaker 2: this point.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Well, when they didn't add a tackle in the offseason,
- 29:26Speaker 1: they kind of decided it.
- 29:27Speaker 2: But I don't even think it's just about the tackle.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Like in practice, he's in a red non contact orts.
- 29:30Speaker 2: He's not gonna get hurt.
- 29:31Speaker 1: But I think some of the trepidation is in Gid
- 29:35Speaker 1: kind of talked about this after the first preseason game.
- 29:37Speaker 1: They don't they are worried about their ability to protect him,
- 29:41Speaker 1: so they're hesitant to play them. And if you know
- 29:42Speaker 1: you're hesitant to play them this year at all, why
- 29:45Speaker 1: overly drill him in practice?
- 29:47Speaker 2: Because I think you need to find out what you have.
- 29:50Speaker 2: You need to find out what you have, like, you
- 29:52Speaker 2: need to find out if this guy that you drafted
- 29:54Speaker 2: third overall really is the future.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I think they and I think they understand that. I
- 30:01Speaker 1: also think they're like, legitimately, they want to make sure
- 30:04Speaker 1: jakober Set is competitive this year. They don't want to
- 30:06Speaker 1: take anything away from Jacoby Brissett.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I think that's the wrong way to approach it, That's
- 30:09Speaker 2: all I'm saying. They why not give him any opportunities
- 30:13Speaker 2: with the ones in practice? It makes no sense, especially
- 30:16Speaker 2: when you know that the backup offensive lines of train
- 30:18Speaker 2: Wreck right now. Just to give him the opportunity to
- 30:22Speaker 2: actually go through a play at in a proper manner
- 30:27Speaker 2: consistently and like maybe strings some positive plays together, we
- 30:30Speaker 2: get into these hurry ups every single time in practice
- 30:32Speaker 2: when they put him in the two minute and he
- 30:34Speaker 2: can't move the ball.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been it's been rough.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Yeah, So like what are we getting out of that?
- 30:40Speaker 2: And I get it. You want to give jacobyber Set
- 30:42Speaker 2: opportunities to get him ready to play and all that.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Jacoby b be fine. He's made forty eight starts in
- 30:48Speaker 2: the NFL. He's thirty one years old. Like, if you
- 30:50Speaker 2: give Drake May six reps a day with the starters,
- 30:54Speaker 2: it's not going to make jacobyber Set go from Tom
- 30:57Speaker 2: Brady to Zach Wilson. Right, He's gonna be who he's
- 31:00Speaker 2: gonna be, right, And I just that to me is
- 31:04Speaker 2: the biggest thing is it's not so much about let's
- 31:06Speaker 2: open the door and let's see what it looks like
- 31:08Speaker 2: with Drake May in terms of him starting, it's mostly
- 31:11Speaker 2: just for his development. It would help his development to
- 31:15Speaker 2: actually be around pieces that function at a decent level
- 31:19Speaker 2: so that he can sit back there and actually go
- 31:21Speaker 2: through progressions and go through the offense and move the
- 31:24Speaker 2: ball and grows he have some confidence about what he's
- 31:27Speaker 2: doing out there. It's it's been going all the way
- 31:31Speaker 2: back to Thursday's preseason game. Then we can we can
- 31:33Speaker 2: move on from this going back to Thursday's preseason game
- 31:36Speaker 2: to now, all of this handling of the quarterback has
- 31:39Speaker 2: made no sense to me.
- 31:41Speaker 1: No, I look, I don't understand the plan. I don't
- 31:43Speaker 1: understand I don't I don't want to say I don't
- 31:47Speaker 1: see the plan. I do see the plan. I don't
- 31:49Speaker 1: like on all the offense line. I don't even understand
- 31:50Speaker 1: what the plan is. I guess a quarterback, I understand
- 31:52Speaker 1: what the plan is, but it doesn't I said when
- 31:56Speaker 1: they moved on for mac Jones that there's less to
- 32:00Speaker 1: be learned there. And I hope that even though it's
- 32:02Speaker 1: a new like Bill's not in charge anymore, still a
- 32:06Speaker 1: lot of the same people. I hope they learn their
- 32:08Speaker 1: lesson from the mac Jones saga. I do wonder if
- 32:12Speaker 1: this is maybe too much of an over correction.
- 32:15Speaker 2: In terms of them being so slow with it.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Just so careful, or maybe they're just being so careful.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Maybe it has nothing to do with mac Jones. Maybe
- 32:21Speaker 1: I mean pack away Aaron Rodgers sat multiple seasons Short
- 32:25Speaker 1: and Loves at multiple seasons, like maybe it's some of that,
- 32:27Speaker 1: but it just feels like they're they're handling with kid gloves,
- 32:31Speaker 1: and I think it and I I'm the one the
- 32:33Speaker 1: whole mac Jones that are pounding the table. You need
- 32:35Speaker 1: to take it, you need to make it as easy
- 32:37Speaker 1: as possible for the quarterback. Saying the quarterback needs help
- 32:40Speaker 1: is not a dirty thing. The more you help your
- 32:42Speaker 1: quarterback along, the better. And I still believe all of that,
- 32:45Speaker 1: but a certain point you got to put the kid
- 32:47Speaker 1: on the field.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I wonder my fear isn't necessarily that they're over
- 32:53Speaker 2: correcting from mac Jones. My fear is the first thing
- 32:56Speaker 2: that you said, Yeah, which is that.
- 32:58Speaker 1: The second thing I said, the packaway thing.
- 32:59Speaker 2: No, my fear is the thing that you said about
- 33:03Speaker 2: that they want Jacob Brissett to be viable this year,
- 33:06Speaker 2: and like they're more concerned about well winning games in
- 33:11Speaker 2: the short term with Jacoby Brissett as the quarterback than
- 33:14Speaker 2: they are about developing.
- 33:15Speaker 1: That could be that could so I was actually thinking
- 33:17Speaker 1: it the other way. This could be a chicken or
- 33:19Speaker 1: eg thing. Yeah, they're so set on stringing Drake may
- 33:22Speaker 1: along slowly that that's why they're more invested in Jacoby
- 33:27Speaker 1: Brissett because they know that. I didn't think of it
- 33:30Speaker 1: the way you're saying. I'm more meant it the other
- 33:33Speaker 1: way that the hesitance with Drake may maybe why they're
- 33:35Speaker 1: more invested in Jacob Breseet because they know he's going
- 33:37Speaker 1: to start at least call twelve games this year.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it just the whole handling of his reps. I'm
- 33:44Speaker 2: not in his how they're walking him through this whole thing,
- 33:48Speaker 2: like let's take all the other pieces around it off
- 33:51Speaker 2: the table, like the offensive line, all this stuff, all
- 33:54Speaker 2: the way through. How they've just handled his development, I'm not.
- 33:58Speaker 2: And I also wanted to take off like footwork and mechanics,
- 34:02Speaker 2: and because I think that some of those things have
- 34:04Speaker 2: shown some improvements. I think his footwork does look better
- 34:07Speaker 2: in some instances, and I think his motion is tightened
- 34:10Speaker 2: up a little bit. His front arm now they're having
- 34:12Speaker 2: him bring that front arm closer to his to his
- 34:16Speaker 2: body Brady's style, like Brady would put the towel underneath
- 34:19Speaker 2: his front arm and keep his arm. His mechanics are faster,
- 34:23Speaker 2: more compact. His shotgun drops actually have been a lot better,
- 34:27Speaker 2: you know, a lot more in rhythm. Like his three
- 34:29Speaker 2: step hitches right now out of shotgun is actually looks
- 34:32Speaker 2: good and looks how it should to my eye at least.
- 34:36Speaker 2: So I think that they've made progress with some of
- 34:38Speaker 2: the mechanical and technique work that they've done with him.
- 34:41Speaker 2: It's more about the handling of the reps and who
- 34:43Speaker 2: he's playing with and when he's playing in preseason games
- 34:47Speaker 2: and things like that that I just can't fully wrap
- 34:49Speaker 2: my head around, Like was that koe Brissett went out
- 34:53Speaker 2: there last Thursday night and he also played what five
- 34:56Speaker 2: to six players or something like that. Was Were those
- 34:59Speaker 2: five six plays for koe Brissett meaningful in any sort
- 35:02Speaker 2: of way? Did they help him in any sort of way?
- 35:05Speaker 2: Why not go back to last Thursday night and start
- 35:08Speaker 2: draaking May from the beginning of the game. If you
- 35:10Speaker 2: only want him to work with the top offensive line,
- 35:12Speaker 2: I get it. You don't want to put the kid
- 35:14Speaker 2: back there against a shaky offensive line and get him
- 35:17Speaker 2: killed in a preseason game. Then start him with the
- 35:20Speaker 2: ones last week, give him two series full series with
- 35:24Speaker 2: the ones, and give him those opportunities, because Brissette will
- 35:27Speaker 2: get him in the second and third preseason games, and
- 35:29Speaker 2: he got him yesterday in the joint practice. So it
- 35:32Speaker 2: just it feels like all these different things, I'm starting
- 35:36Speaker 2: to second guess a lot, and that to me is worrisome.
- 35:40Speaker 2: But I want to turn the page because we could
- 35:43Speaker 2: talk another forty five minutes about all this. So take
- 35:45Speaker 2: some of these phone calls and emails, and we got
- 35:47Speaker 2: a bunch of emails rolling in as well, and then
- 35:49Speaker 2: we have some other things we wanted to get to.
- 35:51Speaker 2: But let's get to the phone lines, because these guys
- 35:53Speaker 2: have been waiting. Jeff is in Maine. What's up, Jeff?
- 35:57Speaker 3: Hey?
- 35:57Speaker 4: How you doing? Guys good?
- 35:58Speaker 2: How are you good?
- 36:00Speaker 4: So every year I make my fantasy team name something
- 36:06Speaker 4: to do with the Patriots. This year is very niche.
- 36:09Speaker 4: It's the Manhattan Project Nice. I don't think anyone is
- 36:13Speaker 4: going to get it, because no one in my fantasy
- 36:15Speaker 4: is from is from New England. But you know, I
- 36:20Speaker 4: think that I think it's.
- 36:22Speaker 1: A good one.
- 36:23Speaker 4: I know that you guys discussed, you know, the offensive
- 36:28Speaker 4: coaches having a come to Jesus meeting about the offensive line,
- 36:32Speaker 4: and obviously that's the offensive line needs to be addressed.
- 36:37Speaker 4: But do you think that, you know, after playing the
- 36:42Speaker 4: Patriots defense every day and being able to kind of
- 36:45Speaker 4: adjust your game plan to them, and playing the Panthers
- 36:51Speaker 4: stadium maintenance workers that they trotted out there during the
- 36:54Speaker 4: preseason game, you know, after getting their butts sticked by
- 36:57Speaker 4: the Eagles and a good defense, do you think that
- 37:01Speaker 4: this is going to kind of make a VP realize
- 37:05Speaker 4: the changes that he's going to need to make, not
- 37:09Speaker 4: to like in game adjustments, but just the philosophy of
- 37:13Speaker 4: this offense and how he's going to shape game plans
- 37:16Speaker 4: right from the start rather than you know, adjusting on
- 37:20Speaker 4: the fly to a defense, but you know, the core
- 37:23Speaker 4: philosophies that he's trying to implement because of the person
- 37:26Speaker 4: that he has.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the question, Jeff, And we love the
- 37:31Speaker 2: fantasy football name. So it's a good question. It's the
- 37:34Speaker 2: game plan offense versus just trying to get yourself your
- 37:37Speaker 2: house in order, you know, to run things. You mentioned
- 37:41Speaker 2: earlier the continuity factor, and there's basically two there's a
- 37:45Speaker 2: fork in the road, and there's two ways that things go.
- 37:47Speaker 2: They can throw it all out and start putting throw
- 37:51Speaker 2: all the on the freaking floor on the and then
- 37:53Speaker 2: start putting them back up on the whiteboard. Or they
- 37:56Speaker 2: can just put their head down and say we're gonna
- 38:01Speaker 2: trust our stuff, like we're gonna trust ourselves, our coaching,
- 38:05Speaker 2: our system, and that in the coming weeks and months,
- 38:09Speaker 2: this will get better. Right if we stick stick to
- 38:11Speaker 2: the process and we stick to the plan, this would
- 38:14Speaker 2: get this will get better, and my gut tells me
- 38:17Speaker 2: that they are gonna go with the stick to the
- 38:19Speaker 2: process version at.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Least to start. It doesn't mean they're gonna start seventeen games,
- 38:23Speaker 1: but yeah, for first week or two.
- 38:25Speaker 2: My gut tells me that because if you read up
- 38:28Speaker 2: about these West Coast coaches and this offense and this
- 38:32Speaker 2: system and things like that, they'll all tell you, especially
- 38:35Speaker 2: in the run game, it takes a while for the
- 38:38Speaker 2: outside zone stuff to start to really stick and like
- 38:42Speaker 2: come to fruition because it's it's a rhythmic dance. It
- 38:46Speaker 2: needs to be drilled, it needs to be sequenced. It
- 38:48Speaker 2: all needs to be worked on over repet you know, repetition. Repetition.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Repetition is so big with this coaching tree that it
- 38:58Speaker 2: seems unrealistic me that they would just go out there
- 39:01Speaker 2: and throw it all away and say we need to
- 39:03Speaker 2: start completely from scratch, because my guess is in their
- 39:06Speaker 2: head they're saying, by a midway point this year into
- 39:11Speaker 2: year two, it'll start to come together, like it'll it'll
- 39:14Speaker 2: start to click, you know. And if you go back
- 39:16Speaker 2: and you look at some of these places, Sam Fran,
- 39:20Speaker 2: you know, Green Bay, Tennessee, even I think is a
- 39:24Speaker 2: good example when the floor was there and Tennessee as
- 39:26Speaker 2: the offensive coordinator. It takes time to run this kind
- 39:30Speaker 2: of scheme. So my guess is that they're gonna stick
- 39:32Speaker 2: their head in the dirt and just pray that it works.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I also think it doesn't help that there's not there's
- 39:40Speaker 1: not a clear fix. Yeah, if it was in some
- 39:43Speaker 1: people might say it's Mike win wint right tackle. It's
- 39:46Speaker 1: probably as clear as you get, but.
- 39:47Speaker 2: They have too many there's too many holes at this point.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Right, So you're moving one guy off position and you're
- 39:53Speaker 1: putting a rookie in the lineup. That's not even if
- 39:56Speaker 1: you think it's better, and I think it might be better,
- 39:59Speaker 1: but it's not a clear fix, you know what I
- 40:00Speaker 1: mean by that?
- 40:01Speaker 2: It has a higher ceiling.
- 40:02Speaker 1: It has a higher ceiling, but it's not there's not
- 40:04Speaker 1: an obvious all right, Well, we'll put this guy in
- 40:06Speaker 1: for this guy and we're good.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Right, And I think that makes it tougher to just
- 40:10Speaker 1: make the change like that. I'm with you. I think
- 40:13Speaker 1: this is gonna be the starting offensive line for at
- 40:15Speaker 1: least the first few weeks, and maybe there's some in
- 40:18Speaker 1: game adjustments. Again, Bill used to do this where he'd
- 40:20Speaker 1: rotate one spot during a game and you get like
- 40:23Speaker 1: a sixty to forty split. Remember Cole Strange did that
- 40:25Speaker 1: his rookie year. I remember he rotated with but yeah,
- 40:29Speaker 1: he only played like sixty sixty five percent of his
- 40:31Speaker 1: first few games, maybe something like that. But I don't
- 40:34Speaker 1: think there's gonna be sweeping change between now and week one.
- 40:36Speaker 2: So as bad as everything wants, last year, and I'm
- 40:38Speaker 2: not trying to say that it may it fixed all
- 40:41Speaker 2: their problems or anything like that, but last year they
- 40:45Speaker 2: felt pretty good, even though it didn't work out this
- 40:47Speaker 2: one right with Trent Brown at left tackle right like
- 40:50Speaker 2: he was an NFL left tackle, So moving Mike Onnuenu
- 40:53Speaker 2: to right tackle to fix that problem made sense because
- 40:58Speaker 2: they had a guy on the left side that they
- 41:00Speaker 2: felt was okay. In this situation, bold tackle spots are
- 41:04Speaker 2: an issue. And then if you move Landon Robinson up
- 41:07Speaker 2: into the starting lineup, now you have a rookie right
- 41:09Speaker 2: guard that you're not one hundred percent certain about either.
- 41:11Speaker 2: So now you have three issues bas rightly.
- 41:13Speaker 1: And and the other one would be just putting Kane
- 41:15Speaker 1: Wallace back in at left tackle. That's what I would do.
- 41:17Speaker 1: That's what i'd move Mike Winu. That's what I would
- 41:19Speaker 1: But that's also you're putting a rookie career right tackle
- 41:23Speaker 1: in college at left tackle, and that's not a gart
- 41:26Speaker 1: that's hardly guaranteed fix either. Look, I think Caan Wallace
- 41:29Speaker 1: can be a serviceable right tackle in the NFL, like
- 41:31Speaker 1: starting caliber, I don't know about all pro, but like
- 41:34Speaker 1: a starting caliber, decent right tackle. But that's that doesn't
- 41:38Speaker 1: mean that's going to translate to the other side.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I would do too, because I I
- 41:43Speaker 2: feel like that was when they were at their best
- 41:45Speaker 2: in this camp for those couple of days. And granted
- 41:48Speaker 2: those couple of days were very fleeting and they very
- 41:50Speaker 2: long ago at this point in terms of camp days,
- 41:52Speaker 2: but those first couple of days and pads with Cad
- 41:56Speaker 2: and Wallace at left tackle, they looked okay. Yeah it
- 41:59Speaker 2: wasn't I'm not telling you it was the nineties Cowboys,
- 42:02Speaker 2: but they looked okay, and then they were serviceable. They
- 42:05Speaker 2: all of a sudden, we got back into practice after
- 42:08Speaker 2: a day off and Vederian Lowe was at left tackle
- 42:10Speaker 2: and Kayden Wallace was with the twos, and it never
- 42:12Speaker 2: went back, and I didn't understand at the time. I
- 42:17Speaker 2: didn't know what Kaden Wallas did to be essentially be
- 42:20Speaker 2: demoted at that point of the summer. Yeah, it just
- 42:23Speaker 2: it didn't make any sense then. It doesn't make much
- 42:25Speaker 2: sense now, all right, Patty is an aguam. What's up, Patty?
- 42:29Speaker 4: What is up? Guys?
- 42:30Speaker 1: Hey?
- 42:33Speaker 5: So I was thinking maybe the plan coming into the season,
- 42:37Speaker 5: and this may still be the plan. It's sort of
- 42:41Speaker 5: break man like like the Chiefs treated Patrick Mahomes, where,
- 42:44Speaker 5: you know what, We're just essentially gonna sit the kid
- 42:47Speaker 5: for the entire year. Maybe we'll give him a game
- 42:50Speaker 5: or a game or two, because you know, his rookie year.
- 42:53Speaker 5: They they were still only playing sixteen games. And I
- 42:57Speaker 5: was on record, I've been on record, I've been on
- 43:00Speaker 5: board with him starting week one. But Evan, I listened
- 43:03Speaker 5: to the whole cast yesterday and I'm starting to uh
- 43:08Speaker 5: to what I'm thinking. I'm walking that back and you know,
- 43:11Speaker 5: until they get this line settled, I mean I might,
- 43:15Speaker 5: I might be on board with him sitting almost the
- 43:18Speaker 5: whole season, you know, barring something happened to Jacobe Verssett.
- 43:22Speaker 5: But do you guys think at a point like at
- 43:23Speaker 5: a certain point where they're maybe mathematically eliminated. Well, let's
- 43:27Speaker 5: just say that that is the plan. We're sitting them
- 43:29Speaker 5: practically the whole year. But if they do get to
- 43:32Speaker 5: a point where they're mathematically eliminated, do you think they
- 43:36Speaker 5: just say through it, Let's let's get it. Let's have
- 43:39Speaker 5: him get his experience. Now, a little bit of experience,
- 43:42Speaker 5: and just cross our fingers, hold our breath and hope
- 43:45Speaker 5: the freaking kid doesn't get hurt. And I'll take it
- 43:48Speaker 5: off the here and thanks for as always.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Thanks guys, appreciate you listen yesterday.
- 43:52Speaker 1: The last thing is the key there.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I I look at I agree with everything that
- 43:58Speaker 2: he said about that piece of it, because I'm at
- 44:02Speaker 2: you mentioned it earlier. I was Drake made the doors
- 44:06Speaker 2: open for week one. I am so far from that at.
- 44:09Speaker 1: The spit told him.
- 44:11Speaker 2: They they are so not even close to ready for
- 44:14Speaker 2: him that I am now at the point where I
- 44:20Speaker 2: I probably look at it now and say, does he
- 44:23Speaker 2: start the last couple of games of this year just
- 44:25Speaker 2: to get his feet wet in the NFL and make
- 44:27Speaker 2: a couple of starts to go into year two with
- 44:29Speaker 2: some experience. I think Patty mentioned Patrick Mahomes right, he
- 44:33Speaker 2: started his last game his rookie season.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Which means, yeah, they already finished.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Yeah, so it was a Week seventeen game and now
- 44:40Speaker 2: would be a Week eighteen game for the Patriots. I'm
- 44:44Speaker 2: at the point where that that is now on the table.
- 44:47Speaker 2: But as much as I'm changing my tune on that,
- 44:51Speaker 2: I don't want it to come across that it's because
- 44:53Speaker 2: of Drake May. I'm changing my tune to that because
- 44:56Speaker 2: a because of the dumpster fire that is going on
- 45:00Speaker 2: on the offensive line right now, but B because I
- 45:04Speaker 2: feel like Dave mishandled the whole situation at this point
- 45:07Speaker 2: where he's not going to be ready any sooner than that. Yeah,
- 45:09Speaker 2: And that that's the part that I want to hold
- 45:12Speaker 2: them accountable for, is that this did not have to
- 45:15Speaker 2: get to this point like he should have been able
- 45:18Speaker 2: to start earlier on in his rookie career. He should
- 45:20Speaker 2: have he should have been able to start at some
- 45:22Speaker 2: point as a rookie and play meaningful games as a rookie.
- 45:25Speaker 2: And that's not going to happen now. I don't And
- 45:27Speaker 2: if I had to say today on August fourteenth, that's
- 45:30Speaker 2: not gonna happen.
- 45:31Speaker 1: It can change. But no, I'm I'm with you. I'm
- 45:34Speaker 1: I'm more annoyed about the line thing because I think
- 45:37Speaker 1: the lack of reps is a product of the offensive line.
- 45:41Speaker 1: I Gerdmeo said that was the least part of it,
- 45:44Speaker 1: So that's the part that bugs me. But to to
- 45:47Speaker 1: to Patty's point, there, does he just play you know,
- 45:49Speaker 1: one or two games at the end of the year,
- 45:50Speaker 1: you see where he's at. Maybe throw him in blowouts,
- 45:53Speaker 1: you know, during the season. I think I don't. I
- 45:54Speaker 1: think Mahomes played in a few other games, like where
- 45:56Speaker 1: the Chiefs were up big. And may be wrong on that,
- 45:59Speaker 1: but it all comes down to whether or not they
- 46:02Speaker 1: think they can keep them healthy. Because what would be
- 46:05Speaker 1: a true nightmare scenario, No, Mahomes only played that one game, Okay,
- 46:09Speaker 1: what would be a true nightmare scenario is you get
- 46:11Speaker 1: to that point late in the year where like, okay,
- 46:13Speaker 1: we're gonna put him in after you've already I don't
- 46:15Speaker 1: want to say stunted his development, but delayed the timeline,
- 46:18Speaker 1: and then he gets hurt, and now does he miss
- 46:21Speaker 1: time next year? And now he's just so far behind
- 46:24Speaker 1: schedule that you know you're gonna be getting to the
- 46:28Speaker 1: point where you got to decide on his fifty year option,
- 46:30Speaker 1: and you may not have a full picture of what
- 46:32Speaker 1: he is, so it it makes sense, but you have
- 46:36Speaker 1: to be able to protect him. And are they gonna
- 46:39Speaker 1: get there at some point this season? I don't know.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I just don't know.
- 46:43Speaker 2: And it should be able to for one game where
- 46:46Speaker 2: you can scheme it up and you can get the
- 46:48Speaker 2: ball out of his hands quickly, and you can move
- 46:51Speaker 2: the pocket and all these kinds of things one game
- 46:55Speaker 2: in January, when you've had seventeen weeks to try to
- 46:58Speaker 2: figure out this the offensive line to get it to
- 47:00Speaker 2: be representable. They should be able to play him for one.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Game their games in starting in December, just looking what
- 47:07Speaker 1: helps them. There aren't any real dominant pass rushes in here. Colts, Cardinals,
- 47:11Speaker 1: the Bills of a good pass rush, but that's mostly interior.
- 47:14Speaker 1: I'm assuming von Miller's Cook Chargers and then Bills again, So.
- 47:17Speaker 2: The Bills, I mean Everysso that's true. Yeah, but I
- 47:21Speaker 2: hear you, like, yeah, it's.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Well, I was just looking like I forgot if like,
- 47:25Speaker 1: for instance, the the I know most of the schedule,
- 47:31Speaker 1: but like the rams are at the end and they've
- 47:32Speaker 1: got some some dogs and pasts the Dolphins there at
- 47:35Speaker 1: the end, Guys like Jalen Phillips.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Like a week team jam against the Bills, who here
- 47:40Speaker 2: very easily could have everything locked up that they can
- 47:43Speaker 2: possibly lock up.
- 47:43Speaker 1: I don't think they will.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Okay, maybe seeding, but like they're not going out there
- 47:47Speaker 2: playing for play their lives in that game. Maybe that
- 47:53Speaker 2: that's a point where they can they can get them
- 47:56Speaker 2: in there, and it's one of the you know, those
- 47:57Speaker 2: four corner offense games for Buffalo.
- 47:59Speaker 1: That but like you said, like you said before, you
- 48:04Speaker 1: can scheme ways around it. And that's what kind of
- 48:07Speaker 1: confuses me so much about the preseason handling of it.
- 48:11Speaker 1: There's immense value in him just going out getting the
- 48:14Speaker 1: line pre snap, making the reads, making the communications, and
- 48:18Speaker 1: then you can just have him hand it.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Off, yeah, or throw a ball into the flatter screen.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Right like you don't need to call your full playbook.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Just give them the experience of going out there, and
- 48:28Speaker 1: you can certainly mitigate his chances of getting hit, rollouts,
- 48:32Speaker 1: things like that. So I understand not putting him out
- 48:34Speaker 1: there and having him run like a four he its offense. Yeah,
- 48:36Speaker 1: I totally understand that and not running some of these
- 48:39Speaker 1: more complex calls that have two even three cut routes
- 48:43Speaker 1: in them that take more time. Like, yeah, don't put
- 48:46Speaker 1: him out there and have him do that. I'm with
- 48:47Speaker 1: you on that. You can go out there and hand
- 48:49Speaker 1: it off. If he's getting hit, handing the ball off,
- 48:51Speaker 1: there's much much, much bigger problem.
- 48:54Speaker 2: And he wouldn't have because Bailey's Appy played in that
- 48:56Speaker 2: game just fine the other night for the lion's share
- 48:59Speaker 2: of it. And that's the other part that I think
- 49:01Speaker 2: is so frustrating, because I agree with you one hundred
- 49:03Speaker 2: percent about what you said that procedurally, he could get
- 49:06Speaker 2: into a game and just kind of go through the
- 49:08Speaker 2: motions of what it's like to call the play in
- 49:10Speaker 2: the huddle, to get to the line of scrimmage, make checks,
- 49:13Speaker 2: make alerts, you know, whatever the his cans, you know,
- 49:17Speaker 2: if it's a run, pass, whatever, and hand the ball
- 49:20Speaker 2: off thirty times that you can do that. The other
- 49:23Speaker 2: thing I would say is is that was there any
- 49:26Speaker 2: better team in the preseason that they'll face then the
- 49:31Speaker 2: Carolina Panthers practice squad, Right, he was gonna play a
- 49:33Speaker 2: bunch of bumps, Like if they put him in the game,
- 49:36Speaker 2: with tomorrow night against the Eagles, and the Eagles play
- 49:39Speaker 2: some of their guys, Like, he's gonna be facing a
- 49:41Speaker 2: team that's that's loaded defensively and especially on the defensive front.
- 49:46Speaker 2: So that was the opportunity. The opportunity was to play
- 49:49Speaker 2: him against the freaking Panthers, right, like the third string
- 49:52Speaker 2: defensive line. Like what, at what point, there's no Zappi
- 49:56Speaker 2: was fine? Like Zappi is pressured on like thirty percent
- 49:58Speaker 2: of his dropbacks in that game. It wasn't anything. Alarm it.
- 50:00Speaker 2: It wasn't anything. It wasn't Dallas.
- 50:02Speaker 1: Well, but they didn't know that going in. They may
- 50:04Speaker 1: have thought it was gonna be worse than that.
- 50:05Speaker 2: They thought it against Carolina's practice squad, they thought was
- 50:08Speaker 2: gonna be worse.
- 50:08Speaker 1: Well, well, here's the thing. They kept the group the same,
- 50:12Speaker 1: So maybe they were encouraged by what they saw just
- 50:14Speaker 1: just reading teaies.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Yeah all right, it's officially back to school season and
- 50:18Speaker 2: you can find everything you need to design your dream
- 50:21Speaker 2: dorm at Bob's Discount Furniture. Set up stylish study spots
- 50:24Speaker 2: with plenty of small space, friendly seating, a plus bedroom
- 50:28Speaker 2: sets and of course, smart storage made to maximize your
- 50:31Speaker 2: college HQ. So stop in and make the grade with
- 50:35Speaker 2: Bob's Discount Furniture, the official furniture store of the New
- 50:37Speaker 2: England Patriots. All right, let's get to some of these
- 50:39Speaker 2: emails and we'll do three up, three down.
- 50:41Speaker 1: We got a few more calls too.
- 50:42Speaker 2: We do have a few more calls. I'll get you
- 50:44Speaker 2: guys in a second. So this is an email from
- 50:47Speaker 2: David in Maine. First question, based off of everything that
- 50:51Speaker 2: everybody's hearing and what he's you know, listening to and
- 50:54Speaker 2: us and things like that, the offense is bad because
- 50:57Speaker 2: of the offensive line and specifically the offensive tackles. Yes,
- 51:01Speaker 2: And he's just wondering if that notion is correct that
- 51:04Speaker 2: this is all the offensive line. I wouldn't say it's
- 51:07Speaker 2: all the offensive lines ever, all one thing, right football.
- 51:10Speaker 2: I thought yesterday, you know, we haven't talked a ton
- 51:12Speaker 2: about Jacob Brisett his day.
- 51:14Speaker 1: He's had a tough couple days here.
- 51:16Speaker 2: His accuracy has been sporadic. Yeah, the last couple of days,
- 51:19Speaker 2: I thought he had some opportunities. And this is where
- 51:21Speaker 2: I kind of get fired up about not giving Drake
- 51:24Speaker 2: may some of these reps because I did think yesterday
- 51:27Speaker 2: that Jacobber said, had some clean pockets and had some
- 51:29Speaker 2: ability to push the ball down the field. He was
- 51:32Speaker 2: just missing throws. He missed a wide open Austin Hooper
- 51:35Speaker 2: for what would have been a really nice touchdown down
- 51:37Speaker 2: the field. Hooper ran like a seam splitter against his
- 51:41Speaker 2: too high structure, looked like quarters and just shot right
- 51:44Speaker 2: up the middle of the defense through the zone and
- 51:46Speaker 2: was behind the defense and was open in the end zone,
- 51:49Speaker 2: and Jacobyber said, overshot him. He threw a ball behind
- 51:52Speaker 2: Taekwon Thornton that Darius Slay ended up getting a hand
- 51:54Speaker 2: in late into the passing window or into in between
- 51:57Speaker 2: you know, the catch point, and that should have been
- 52:01Speaker 2: out in front of Taekwon Thornton and should have been caught.
- 52:03Speaker 2: He threw one to Jalen Rager in the two minute
- 52:06Speaker 2: that was complete that Rager caught but was wrong shouldered right.
- 52:09Speaker 2: He like made rigor adjusted to it. It's kind of
- 52:11Speaker 2: like the throw Zappy made to Kaishon Booty in the
- 52:14Speaker 2: preseason game last Thursday night, where it was one of
- 52:17Speaker 2: those like no no yes plays right where it was
- 52:19Speaker 2: like he threw it inside when it should have been
- 52:21Speaker 2: outside and the corner jumped it, but the corner missed
- 52:24Speaker 2: it and I couldn't break it up. There's just those
- 52:27Speaker 2: like little things there with his ball placement where it's like, yeah,
- 52:31Speaker 2: that throw was where it should have gone, the reads
- 52:34Speaker 2: are where he should be going, his eyes are and
- 52:36Speaker 2: feet are in the right place. As he's generally accurate,
- 52:39Speaker 2: but there's just times with Jakobe Brissett where I'm left
- 52:42Speaker 2: wanting a little bit more where You're just like, if
- 52:44Speaker 2: that was just a little bit of a better throw there,
- 52:47Speaker 2: then they have a big play or they have a
- 52:49Speaker 2: yards after catch opportunity. I'll give you another example. Yesterday,
- 52:53Speaker 2: they ran a I believe it was like a leaked
- 52:56Speaker 2: type of play where Austin Hooper kind of snuck out
- 52:58Speaker 2: on the wheel route and it worked like there was
- 53:02Speaker 2: it kind of was like a busted coverage for the
- 53:04Speaker 2: Eagles and he was wide open. Instead of hitting him
- 53:06Speaker 2: in stride, Austin Hooper had to go up and high
- 53:09Speaker 2: point the ball and adjust to the ball in the air,
- 53:11Speaker 2: and the safety came over and tapped him down. If
- 53:13Speaker 2: that ball hits Austin Hooper in stride, then he's up
- 53:15Speaker 2: the sideline and he's running with it. These are just
- 53:18Speaker 2: the little mini things, like minor things which Kobe Weressett
- 53:22Speaker 2: with his ball placement that if he just had a
- 53:25Speaker 2: little bit more class like it was just a little
- 53:26Speaker 2: bit better that they these plays would hit for more
- 53:30Speaker 2: explosives or bigger plays down the field and things of
- 53:33Speaker 2: that nature. So I think there's a little bit of
- 53:35Speaker 2: that going on with the first team offense right now.
- 53:37Speaker 2: That his ball placement's been kind of sporadic over the
- 53:40Speaker 2: last couple of days, and it was in the preseason game,
- 53:42Speaker 2: I felt like a little bit too. And then the
- 53:44Speaker 2: other thing was outside of Pop Douglas, their receivers, I
- 53:49Speaker 2: don't think we're uncovering all that consistently.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Most of their catches were contested catches.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Hooper was getting open a little bit, and I think
- 53:57Speaker 2: that speaks to the tight end in this offense viable
- 54:00Speaker 2: option and Hunter Henry should be a viable option. And
- 54:04Speaker 2: Pop came alive in the in Jacoby Brissett's two minutes
- 54:08Speaker 2: and his hurry up at the end of practice. Pop
- 54:10Speaker 2: made a few catches to get them down the field
- 54:12Speaker 2: in that instance, But other than that, it does it
- 54:14Speaker 2: still doesn't feel like there's a ton of explosives down
- 54:18Speaker 2: the field, like deep opportunities. A lot of it is
- 54:20Speaker 2: underneath stuff and check downs and passes into the flat
- 54:24Speaker 2: or quick outs or whatever.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, yeah, I agree. I would just say to
- 54:28Speaker 1: the original question, like how much of this is the tackles.
- 54:31Speaker 1: Everything's always a little bit of everything, but like the
- 54:34Speaker 1: tackles are the biggest issue, I would also say, I
- 54:36Speaker 1: think some of these other issues the offense, you know,
- 54:38Speaker 1: the quarterback and the receivers. You can't develop timing if
- 54:41Speaker 1: you can't get the play set up. Yeah, and we
- 54:43Speaker 1: saw them handle this last year in past years by
- 54:46Speaker 1: running more seven on seven's in practice and taking the
- 54:49Speaker 1: line out of it. They haven't necessarily done that this year.
- 54:52Speaker 1: I think they want to drill the offensive line as
- 54:54Speaker 1: much as possible to try to get it figured out.
- 54:57Speaker 1: But ultimately, what it comes down to is there's not
- 54:59Speaker 1: as the I've been as many opportunities to develop chemistry
- 55:03Speaker 1: in the passing game, and you're seeing that.
- 55:05Speaker 2: Yeah. The second part of David's question is about all
- 55:09Speaker 2: the cap space that they have. The Patriots are about
- 55:11Speaker 2: forty two million dollars right now under the cap, which
- 55:14Speaker 2: I believe is number one in the league. He's just
- 55:17Speaker 2: asking if it rolls over, and yes, one hundred percent
- 55:19Speaker 2: of the cap space rolls over year to year, so
- 55:22Speaker 2: they will be able to roll over all this space
- 55:24Speaker 2: into next off season. So he said, you know, they
- 55:28Speaker 2: paid you on, they obviously can pay jud On if
- 55:30Speaker 2: they want to pay Youdon. Yeah, but the biggest thing
- 55:33Speaker 2: to me with the cap space is that once they
- 55:36Speaker 2: missed out on Calvin Ridley, and it didn't seem like
- 55:39Speaker 2: they loved the rest of the free agent market this offseason.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Right.
- 55:43Speaker 2: It seemed to me as though they said, instead of
- 55:46Speaker 2: overpaying in free agency for like C plus talent, let's
- 55:50Speaker 2: just keep the war chest and we'll keep the cap space,
- 55:54Speaker 2: will roll it into next off season and then hopefully
- 55:57Speaker 2: in twenty twenty five we make some splashes.
- 55:59Speaker 1: DK met Calf.
- 56:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I actually don't mind the approach because we learned
- 56:03Speaker 2: our lesson in twenty twenty one, where you go out
- 56:05Speaker 2: and you pay like overpay for guys you know, Johnny Smith,
- 56:09Speaker 2: Nelson Aguilar, like those players, and then you're like stuck
- 56:12Speaker 2: with that core for like two or three years cap wise,
- 56:16Speaker 2: and then that puts you into a tight spot.
- 56:19Speaker 1: It would bother me less if they just paid Judon. Yeah,
- 56:22Speaker 1: just game him through this year. Just put a band
- 56:24Speaker 1: aid on a game through this year and then you
- 56:25Speaker 1: can part ways. But meanwhile, he was awesome in practice
- 56:28Speaker 1: yesterday and he's going one hundred and ten percent. He's
- 56:31Speaker 1: totally bought in. He's giving them every reason to pay him.
- 56:34Speaker 1: Yeah for whatever, that's that's totally fair.
- 56:36Speaker 2: They probably should pay Jude On and hopefully will here
- 56:40Speaker 2: soon and they can do that with their cap space
- 56:41Speaker 2: and all that. But just lasting on the cap space
- 56:44Speaker 2: like it obviously didn't work out with Brandon Nyuk, but
- 56:46Speaker 2: that's a great example of Brandon Nyuk all of a
- 56:49Speaker 2: sudden becomes available potentially via trade in the middle of August,
- 56:54Speaker 2: which almost never happens, but it did happen in this instance,
- 56:57Speaker 2: and now suddenly they had It's so easy for the
- 57:00Speaker 2: Patriots now to just cut the check and acquire Brandon.
- 57:02Speaker 2: I you it isn't a problem. Whereas if they were
- 57:06Speaker 2: up against the cap because they spent all this money
- 57:08Speaker 2: in free agency and you know, got rid of all
- 57:12Speaker 2: of it, all the cap space, then all of a sudden,
- 57:14Speaker 2: now we're in a conversation about how do you move
- 57:16Speaker 2: the cap space around and how do you figure it
- 57:18Speaker 2: out to get him on the roster. Same could be
- 57:20Speaker 2: true if it's at the deadline or something like that.
- 57:22Speaker 2: That a you know, CD Land DK, that Calf you're
- 57:25Speaker 2: one of your guys, comes available at the deadline. Now
- 57:27Speaker 2: you have some wiggle room. So I don't mind that
- 57:30Speaker 2: they they they held serve with the cap space because
- 57:33Speaker 2: I feel like they will be better used in future management.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Regardless of you know, what happens this year, It'll be
- 57:41Speaker 2: better used in future times. All right, let's see here, Uh, okay,
- 57:48Speaker 2: a lot of questions about the offensive line and how
- 57:50Speaker 2: bad it is. Obviously, so I'm trying to read these
- 57:56Speaker 2: emails while hosting the show, which is not good radio.
- 57:59Speaker 1: Take the call and well we're answering the call. You
- 58:02Speaker 1: can read the emails and figure out which one.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Okay, that's a good idea. All right, Brad is in Ohio.
- 58:06Speaker 2: What's up, Brad? Brad you're on the air. O. Hey,
- 58:13Speaker 2: how's it going, Brad?
- 58:15Speaker 6: How you got doing today?
- 58:17Speaker 2: Good?
- 58:18Speaker 1: Good?
- 58:20Speaker 6: I was wondering. I agree with you guys so much.
- 58:23Speaker 6: I just think that Drake's being not used properly. I mean,
- 58:27Speaker 6: we've got to get this guy some reps. I mean
- 58:30Speaker 6: He's got the throwing ability that Jacoby Marys just doesn't
- 58:35Speaker 6: or Jacoby Bursett I'm sorry, doesn't have. And you know,
- 58:40Speaker 6: I mean proving this in practice, he's out playing him.
- 58:43Speaker 6: So what what on earth are we We're actually gonna
- 58:47Speaker 6: sit him on the bench. I mean, I know, the
- 58:49Speaker 6: offensive line is the trocious and we don't have tackles.
- 58:53Speaker 6: And Kyden Wallace shouldn't be on the left side. He
- 58:56Speaker 6: proved that in the preseason game. But on the right
- 59:00Speaker 6: side he looked good and Landon Roberts did, so we
- 59:02Speaker 6: got three really effective right guards. And you know, I'm
- 59:08Speaker 6: just really confused about our offensive line, and you guys
- 59:10Speaker 6: are so on to the you know, the fact about it.
- 59:15Speaker 6: What do you think I mean? And who's the better
- 59:18Speaker 6: receiver Thornton or reagor running Rowls hands. I mean, there's
- 59:24Speaker 6: so many problems. I just thought, you know, at first,
- 59:26Speaker 6: I was optimistic. Now I'm kind of looking at the
- 59:29Speaker 6: season and the future, like what's Jared Mayo doing. I'm confused.
- 59:35Speaker 6: I guess maybe any insight.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Thank you, thanks Bratt, thanks for the call. I understand
- 59:41Speaker 2: I understand all your everybody that's a Patriots fan. I
- 59:44Speaker 2: totally understand all your frustrations with what's being told to you,
- 59:48Speaker 2: and we're just telling you what we see. We're not
- 59:50Speaker 2: trying to kill anybody. We're not trying to be negative.
- 59:53Speaker 2: If we could come out here and say they had
- 59:55Speaker 2: a great day yesterday against Eagles, we would we would,
- 59:59Speaker 2: you know. With the with the offensive line, I feel
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: like we've beaten that drum a little bit to death
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: at this point. I still feel like that the best
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: thing to do at this point with their offensive line
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: is to elevate Kid and Wallace to left tackle with
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: the top group and just sink or swim with with
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: some of the younger players that they have in this roster.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: You know, city so second year guy Caden Wallace at
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: right or left tackle, excuse me, just let the rookie
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: kind of learn on the fly, trial by fire, and
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: he's gonna have bumps in the road and it's not
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: gonna be pretty at times, I'm sure, but it also
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: is not gonna be pretty. Evederian Lowe is the starting
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: left tackle either, So I'd rather go with the guy
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: that has developmental upside and that you're invested in as
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: the future. Enter the Raiger Thornton question. Yeah, I think
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: this is a really interesting one because not to hype
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: up either player, like either one of them is anything
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: special necessarily, but it's interesting to be because they seem
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: to be fighting for the same role in the offense
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: and sort of the same roster spots result. So I
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: had them both on my last fifty three man roster
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: projection and I had Booty as the oddoan out, so
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: you can go that direction. But either way, only one
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: of those guys is actually gonna see real playing time
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: in games. It seems to the seesaw to me like
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: which one looks better in terms of playing receiver. Obviously
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: we know Rager can return, but in terms of actual
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: receiver play, there's Rager days and there's Thornton days, and
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: it kind of just goes back and forth a little bit.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: But isn't that the tiebreaker? What else can you do?
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: And I thought Jalen Rager looked really good as a
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: kick returner yesterday against the Eagles.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: So.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I still think Rager has the edge. I still have
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: Booty on because he gives you something different, and I
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: know there's some overlap with Jalen Polk, but if they
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: want to ease the rookie, and especially if Kendrick Bourne
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: is going to start on PUP, I just think it
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: makes sense to have Booty on the roster.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that was the biggest reason why I had him off.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Was more stylistically. I always think I used this analogy
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: a lot, but I always think of receivers and cornerback rooms.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Like basketball teams. You know, you have one through five,
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: and you want to have a point guard, shooting guard,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: small forward, power forward, center. You don't want five centers, right,
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: you didn't, but you also don't want five point guards.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: So you want to have different types of skill sets
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: and different types of body types, you know, inside outside guys,
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: you know, different skill sets in general, and to me,
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: kish on Booty, it has the same exact skill set
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: as Bourne, Osbourne, Polk Baker, like all those guys kind
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: of play the game the same way. Similar build, similar
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: you know, inside outside versatility, similar route tree, like all
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: of it. So he's the fifth receiver if you keep him,
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: he's the fifth receiver on the team that plays that way.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: And you have Borne, who when he's healthy, is going
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: to play well.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: So I put Booty on, but with the idea that
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I don't remember if I exactly wrote this, But you're
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: going to have to open up a roster spot form
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: when he comes off pup.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: Yeah, mat right, But you're gonna have just for the
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: long term, yeah, because Bourne's gonna play at some point.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: So you have Bourne who's gonna play, yeah, you have
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: Osborne who is gonna play, yeah, and then you have
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: the Bolt the rookies who are also going to play.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: So we're keeping Kaishan Boudi on the roster to be
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: a game day scratch.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: I mean he's basically he's just giving I basically kept
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: him because I think he's the best depth option until
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Kendrick Born comes back. Okay, you're saying long term, when
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Kendrick Borne comes back. I mean, if somebody else gets hurt,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: maybe you keep me, keep a bunch of wide receivers.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: But the idea would be like, he's just keeping that
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: spot warm Untilkendrick Born.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Comes Okay, fair enough, Yeah, it could go either way.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: They would. I would say, if I had to lean
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: one direction with Raager and Thorton, I would read slight
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: Rager right now. The returnability is there, and I do
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: think that he's a little bit more consistent in practice
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: in terms of his receiver play taekwons is his speed
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: plays more like Taekwon's a faster guy, and he his
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: vertical like his third level speed is better than Jalenragers
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: to actually get down the field and make those plays happen.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: But Rager it seems to me like a little bit
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: more consistent and well rounded. So I'd go slight lean
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: towards Rager on that one. I wanted before we do
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: three up, three down and talk about Thursday night, I
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: want to do talk about the defense a little bit
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: from yesterday because I realized we got into an hour
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: into the show of me screaming about the offense podcast
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: and I didn't talk at all about the defense full disclosure,
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: do just to watch the defense, and I watched the offense.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I watched the defense perfect.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: So I'm going to react mostly to what you're telling me.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: But what I saw out of the defense, at least
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: on the whole when I was able to kind of
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: look over there, was that they were definitely holding their
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: own more than the Patriots offense was, and it kind
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: of went exactly how you would expect this to go. Now,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: with that being said, I looked over a couple of times,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: and Jalen Hurts was throwing dimes to AJ Brown down
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: the field, where I was like, yeah, those two guys
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: are still really damn good and that's gonna happen every
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: once in a while. But I was wasn't looking over
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: there and seeing play, you know, tons and tons of
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: plays down the field for the Eagles. But he threw
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: one to AJ Brown that I did catch into like
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: the honey hole in his zone coverage where he just
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: like feathered it over Alex Austin and dropped it in
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: a bucket to AJ Brown like an in stride to
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: AJ Brown, where I just was like, holy hell, like
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: that that right there is like a Pro Bowl caliber
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: quarterback and one of the best receivers in the league
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: just being too good, like you can't defend that, you know,
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: type of thing. But in general, what you know, who
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: stood out on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: So I thought Matthew Judon had a really good practice.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: He was Hurts his pressure quite a bit, some of
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: those stories he made he made under duress. I thought
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Patriot's pass rush was good, Judon was good, Gonzalez was better.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: He was really good against AJ Brown in one on ones,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: which stood out, and then they put him more on
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: DeVonta Smith in team Yeah, and he was solid. I
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: thought he had a definitely that not if he'd had
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: that day going up against the Patriots receivers, I'd be
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: a little more worried. But to have the day he
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: had against a J. Brown Defontet Smith, you feel pretty
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: good about it. I thought BYL. Peppers had a pretty
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: good day. You know, he was going up against Dallas Goddard,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: had a couple of really physical pass breakups. So you know,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: three of the best players on the defense obviously, no duh.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I'd say the one guy under the radar Marco Wilson. Yeah,
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: was competitive throughout the day, and he's one of the favorites.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: I think he might be the favorite at this point
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: for that second boundary spot as long as Jonathan Jones
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: out opposite Christian Zalez, and that obviously still a roster
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: spot even when Jones comes back. So I those were
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: the guys that mainly stood out to me. You know,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: a couple others in there here or there, but but
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: Judon was a force, and I thought the defensive front
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: as a whole represented well. There were just some times
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: that they got pressure and Jalen Hurts made a play anyway,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: and I know that, Like, I think the number was
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: like twenty four to twenty seven or something for Jalen Hurts,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: and people say, how did the defense look so good?
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: When he completed that many passes? A lot of those
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: were like two yard checkdowns. Yeah, a lot of those
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: were him just getting the ball out to get the
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: ball out. And that's the difference between him and a
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: guy like Kober Sat or Drake May. He's under pressure,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: he was able to then handle it and make something
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: happen because that's what goold quarterbacks do, even if that's
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: something wasn't exciting, but they pressured him a ton yesterday.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that was my biggest takeaways as there was a
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: lot of heat on the quarterback.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: And it kind of reminds me. Sorry, you remember the
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Week one game last year where he played decent even
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: though like they were in his face the whole game. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: it was kind of like that.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he's I think Jalen Hurts are really good.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: I think Jalen hurt is going to bounce back this year.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: And he looked like he was going in that. It
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: looks like he's on his way to that based off
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: of what we saw yesterday. The other thing I would
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: just say about what I saw defensively, I agree with
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: you with Christian Gonzalez, and I know this is becoming
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: a storyline with Christian Gonzalez. He is so far down
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: the list of the people I'm worried about with this team,
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: and I understand that people are just trying to be objective,
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: and he has given up more catches in this camp
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: than I feel like he did as a rookie last year.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: But then I went back and looked at my notes
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: from the Green Bay joint practice yesterday, and he gave
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: up some plays to Christian Watson in those practices in
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Green Bay. Yeah, so maybe I'm just misremembering him so
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: not completely, but like overrated his rookie camp just maybe
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: a little bit in my eye, in my top of mind.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: And then they got into the regular season and he's
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: going toe to toe with AJ Brown and Tyreek Hill
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: and Garrett Wilson and he's the rookie of the month. Right, Yeah,
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: so I get that. Yes, I agree that he's probably
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: given up more catches in this camp than I was expecting.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: And I would also say I totally understand that people
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: don't want to crown him yet off of four games
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: or really three and a half games from his rookie season.
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: But to me, he's one of those guys where when
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: the lights turn on for real, like he'll turn on
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: for real and right now in practice, he just kind
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: of goes to the motions a little bit at times,
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: which I don't love, but like it just is his
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: personality and he's just not one of these he doesn't
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: he's not necessarily like one of those tie law type
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: of corners where it's like nobody ever completes a pass
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: on me ever, right, Like, he's not necessarily his demeanor.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: So I thought that yesterday he showed well against those
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: two receivers, and if that's the type of guy that
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: you're getting in game, and when I say show well,
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: I feel like he also turned it up maybe a
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: notch because he was going up against AJ Brown and
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: DeVante Smith and he was like, Okay, I'm gonna treat
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: this like it's live, like this is real, and it
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: felt like he turned it up a little bit, and
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: I thought he was pretty decent. What did you see
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: and what have you thought of Keon White?
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: So far didn't stand out as much. I mean, he
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: was part of the pressure, but didn't I wouldn't say
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: he took over like maybe you were waiting for him
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: to do that wasn't bad, But I wouldn't. It wasn't
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: doesn't like immediately come to mind when I think of
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: the best players.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: Yeah, he's He's someone that I'm is a little bit
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: on my radar because I hear a lot of you know,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: the people in the media tent saying that he's had
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: this great summer. And I'll fully admit that we take
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: an approach with us with us coverage wise that I
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: watch the offense most of the time for most of practice.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: But he is someone that I'm still waiting to see
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: some of that finesse out of. And he can go
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: through blocks, and I have no doubt about that, he
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: can press blocks. I have no doubt about, you know,
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: standing up guys and things like that. I just don't
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: see him get off blocks a ton.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: You're you're still really on this take. I just I
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: don't think anybody's saying he's going to be a top
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: five pass rusher in the league.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I just like I'm on the take because in
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: order for him to take this leap that I keep
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: hearing about, you can't just be a pure like it's
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: you can't just be a power rusher, like. He has
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: to have other tools in his tool belt for him
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: to be as good of a player as I hear
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: some people think that he's going to be if even
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: if like you know, I think last week we mentioned
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: like Trey Flowers. Yeah, like even to get to trade flowers,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: He's gonna have to be more actually tangibly productive than
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: what I've seen in practice. Like I just I feel
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: like he's a linear athlete, and those types of guys
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: that don't move well laterally and don't have a ton
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: of wiggle or finesse or whatever you want to call
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: it or fluidity with their movements, those are guys that
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: get eat up a lot by blocks. Like you're just
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: gonna get kind of run into the line of scrimmage
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: and he just kind of gets swallowed, you know. Half
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: the time, I'm just not there with Keon White. I
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: don't know. I hear a lot of hype about him.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: I want to be there. I want to see it.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: I want to be like this guy is gonna take
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: over for Judaan and like make Judon expendable and just
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: trade out.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think he's like a takeover for Judon guy.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: I don't think they have that guy. I guess ideally
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: be joshu Ja. For me, it's like Tetrikwi's a little
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: bit older, contracts almost up, Like it's more that role
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: for me, Like he's more of that kind of player.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: Fair enough, all right, Corey is in Charlotte. What's up? Corey? Hey?
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: How you doing?
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: A good question? What do you guys think about? Like
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: just I know you mentioned Drake may is like it's
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: an incomplete grade on and I agree with that. I
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: think because he's just not surrounded by better players, like
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: just just starting with the ones on the old line,
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: starting with the ones with the wire Receiven tight ends
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: and just let's let's just see what we got, because
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: I mean, we know what we know what PRIs set is,
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: we know what Bailey is. Like, I'm still shot Bailey
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: is still on it on the roster after that game
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: against the Panther, playing against guys who's gonna work at Walmart,
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: Like that's been unacceptable. And also because of Joe Joe
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: milsaying his skill set like put him I want to
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: see him with the one wide receivers in old line,
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: just see what we got, because I I do believe
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: some players really just shine when they already surrounded by
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: just better players.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: And what do you.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: Guys think about the d overall against the Eagles one yesterday?
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: And I go there.
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: All right, thanks to Corey, thanks for the call. Look,
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: I I you're preaching the choir about Drake Bay getting
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: some reps with the Ones, and I want to reiterate
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: that to me, him getting reps with the Ones has
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: nothing to do with him starting Week one, Like we're
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: not We're right, we're too far past that point the
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: door never you said this earlier about like the offensive line,
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: and we're kind of at that point. We're at the
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: point now where Drake May starting early on in the
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: season or week one is off the table, Like it's
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: too late. He is not playing Week one against against Cincinnati.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: What I'm more looking at it now is, okay, you
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: know he's been in here since May, since the draft
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: rooking Mini camp ota is mini camp, training camp, preseason game.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: Where's he at?
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Can we just get a barometer of a met stick
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: to try to like measure up of where is he
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: is he only is he not even close? Is he
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: seventy five percent? There is the eighty ninety whatever? I
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: don't know because of who he's working with and what's
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: going on around him. So if you can get him
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: some reps in practice with the ones towards the end
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: of training camp here and going into the regular season
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: before they really need to give everything to Jacoe Brissett
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: because he's gonna be playing in the games. Let's give
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: him some opportunities now. Again, not to even talk about
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: him starting, but just to get to a point where
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: we can feel like we have some information about where
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: he's at. Maybe they're looking at the preseason games as that,
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: and maybe you know, this week, tomorrow and next Thursday,
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: we'll get like a really good look at him in
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: the preseason. He'll play thirty snaps or something like that,
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: and that's where we'll go. But you're preaching to the
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: choir with that want to do three up, three down?
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Well go one, we're calling up.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Well, we'll get down in a second. Let's do three up,
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: three down. We'll do the ups first and then we'll
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: take some of these other calls that are coming in
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: and then we'll go go to the downs. This is
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: sort of like a for me, this is kind of
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: like going back to the last like week, right, Like
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: I don't want to base it off of just one
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: practice or whatever. It's obviously the preseason game too, but
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: so let's call it the last like week of Patriots. Okay, football.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: I weighed the last couple of days a little more,
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: but that's fine.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: My number one up, Pop Douglas. Yep, I think the
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Pop Douglas has come alive. No more red non contact jersey.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: He's been At times he's been literally unguardable, like like
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: just especially in the slot on like the quick hitting
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: stuff over the middle. He's been truly a breath of
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: fresh air, like actually explosive, energetic receiver and has been
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: opened a ton and and Kobe Brissett just continues to
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: feed him like he's like, all right, this is obvious
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: that I'm going where I'm going with the football here.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: I really excited what I've seen. How to pop. I
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: still think that the two biggest things though with him
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: not to make everything all, you know, constantly go negative
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: on everything. What's his early down roll? Yeah, first and
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: ten from the twenty five and they want to run
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: the ball, Like, what, how does he get on the field?
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: What's how does he factor into a twelve personnel? Is
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: it just we're gonna put him out in the field
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: and we're gonna have him run jet sweeps and things
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: like that, and that's how we're gonna avoid him having
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: to block anybody for real? Or that's fine, But what's
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: his early down roll and how do you feed him
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: and keep him healthy? Right? Like that does that's a
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: big thing too. But in terms of actually on the
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: field with these with the production on the field in practice,
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Pop Douglas has been on the rise for sure.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, he's been excellent. Matt Dolff had a great line
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: that he's no longer wearing on contact jersey, but it
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: doesn't really matter because nobody can touch him anyway. Yeah,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: the way he's running routes, he's been excellent. It's just
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: how he gets on the field and how he stays
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: on the field, that's the only question. If he stays healthy,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: he can be a thousand yard receiver. But he's gonna
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: stay healthy.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: Yep, all right, who's number two?
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna say so, I'm gonna replace Pop in mind
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: because I had like a fourth, So we'll can't pop
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: for you. Okay, I'm gonna say Matthew Judo, Okay. I've
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: been really impressed with him. He's been good. He's had
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: a couple of good practices at good practice yesterday. He's
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: clearly very involved, very engaged. He's playing with a ton
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: of effort for a guy that's in his situation. I mean,
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: you wouldn't know it. You would think the way he's
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: practicing right now. The contract situation was solved, and from
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: where we were three weeks ago, that's something. Now, what
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: this ultimately turns into in terms of his future, I
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: don't know, but boys, he had a good week and
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: a half of camp. Just objectively as a football player,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: he's done everything you want to say.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I really like his energy that he is coming back,
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: Like I feel like when the contract stuff, really when
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: s really hit the fan with all that, he didn't
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: feel or seemed like Matthew judont to me in terms
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: of his energy and what he was bringing to the
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: table and that respect looks like he's back into that mindset.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: Almost makes you wonder if there is something that's been
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: agreed to in handshake agreement about.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: It We've been saying that for weeks, like maybe it's
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: coming at.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: The end of camp or something. I don't know, Like
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: it's just odd that all of a sudden he just
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: is on board, you know, Like, yeah, I still know
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: if he's fully on board, Like sometimes I look at
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: him and I still feel like a little bit of
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: trepidation from him. But he's certainly much much better. His
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: attitude is much better than where it was the beginning
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: of camp. So that's Number one for you is Judon, Yeah, okay,
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: Number two for me is Jeremiah Farms. I just wanted
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: to give him a shout out for the game last week.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: Mostly Yeah, five quarterback pressures, awes sack, two stuffs, two
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: drawn holds on back to back plays in that game.
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: He was everywhere. He was the best player on the
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: field for the Patriots defense in a game where they
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: dominated defensively. He was excellent. He's on the team. I
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: don't think that's the question. Yeah, he's gonna make the team,
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: and maybe they have something with him there. He can play.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: I wouldn't necessarily put him over the nose all the time.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: I think he's more better stuited to play three technique
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: and the type of scheme that they want to run.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: But I was really impressed with him on film and
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: during the game live too, and I just feel like
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: he's he's a menace, Like he's really stepped up. We'll
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: see what it looks like in the regular season. And
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: I'm not trying to tell you that it's one for one. Oh,
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: don't worry about Christian Barmore. Now, it's fine, But I
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: do feel like they needed somebody to come out of
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: the woodwork a little bit step up for Christian Barmore,
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: and Jeremiah Farms has taken that opportunity.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: All right. So this one mine's basically based off of
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: practice yesterday. Yeah, kickoff unit. They gave the Eagles hell
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: and and look this rule. So you this rule is
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: too new for me to know if this is more
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: the Eagles being bad at it or the Patriots being
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: good at it. But they had what six kickoffs during
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: that period? Yeap one ray Kwon Ricmillan comes down the
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: field force as a fumble. They had another didn't like
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: that too much where they well get to that. They
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: had another where they like line drives squibbed it and
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: the the way the ball is spinning and where it
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: landed relative the returners. The returner was so disoriented he
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: picked up the ball and along the sideline. His next
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: step was out of bounds at the two yard line,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: so you set the defense up at the two, and
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: then they had another squib kick that looked like it
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: was gonna do the same thing, and I think the
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: Eagles just the frustration boiled over because he got a
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: little bit of a shoving match there. Chapping happened right
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: in front of Robert Kraft while he was live on
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: the Sports Hub, which made for good radio. But yeah,
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: it was they. I think they threw some things that
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: the Eagles that the Eagles weren't expecting, and that's encouraging.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: And even on kick return too, ray Quan McMillan did
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: a big block. Jamichael Hasey laid somebody out, which he's
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: not a big guy.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what it seemed to me like the Eagles
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: were reacting to. Is ray Kwan McMillan leveled somebody and
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: it was maybe he was maybe at one percent and
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: everybody else was at one hundred. Fine, yeah, no, I'm
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: gonna say it's a bad thing. I'm I think that's why.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: No, But then you had that other one where it
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: was like a perfectly placed squib kick, because some people
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: will say, well, why not just let it roll out
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: of bounds if it's that close to the sideline. One
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: those low kicks, you don't have as much time to
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: react and you maybe lose track of where you are
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: on the field. Yeah, the other thing that's important to remember,
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: if the ball goes into like directly into the end
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: zone or through the end zone, it's a touch back
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: to the thirty. If the ball lands in the landing
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: zone then goes into the end zone and you kneel
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: on it or whatever, the touchback only goes to the twenty.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: So where the ball was rolling, it wasn't necessarily going
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: to roll out of bounds. It was probably going to
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: roll into the end zone just inside the pipeline. So
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: you probably want to feel that because you don't want
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: to start all the way back at the twenty. But again,
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: I don't think the guy knew where he was on
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: the field because the ball got to him so quick
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: and he's running, sprinting to get there that he steps
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: out of bounds. So Patriots kickoff unit came ready yesterday.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: They were good.
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: Jeremy Springer up. Sure sounds like some of those things
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: where maybe things that they wanted to try out schematically, right,
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: like squid kicks and things like that. That's not something
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: you did. The players are just doing on the flyout.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: They've been that. That's that's a call. Yeah, and it's
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: They're not the only team that's tried that. I mean,
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: this is We've seen a lot of teams try these things.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: But it just I thought the execution was really good yesterday.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: Okay, there you go, Jemy Springer up. I love it.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: My third is Leyden Robinson. Okay, I think Laban Robinson
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: has been the best of the rest, if you want
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: to call him that. I hate to call it that way,
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: but like, yeah, take Andrews and on WHENU and like
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: you know, you know this the stal warts out of it, right,
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: like the the entrenched starters out of it, looking at
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: that next wave of offensive linemen of who might be
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: able to step up and push for playing time and
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: uh maybe make this thing better. Yeah, Leyden Robinson, I
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: thought it was great in the game last Thursday night.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: Really showed well, very physical, played through the whistle, finished
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: blocks in the run game, held up well in pass
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: pro gave up just a hurry and pass protection and
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: a lot of snaps. He actually played I think the
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: most snaps out of anybody on the team offensively last week.
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: And then it was okay yesterday, won a couple reps
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: in one on ones against the Eagles, who kind of
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: dominated the one on ones and two v twos. I
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: thought Leyden Robinson was was solid. It's hard to tell
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: with the second unit in practice because there's a lot
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: going on around him that's not very good. But he's
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: been okay so far. And I know I didn't put
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: him on the downs list, but cityso has been a
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: little bit on my radar. I didn't think he was
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: great in the game last week, kind of was playing
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: a little out of control and just missed some blocks
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: and things like that. And it wasn't great yesterday either.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: I didn't feel like against the Eagles. So, whether it's
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: on Window going out to right tackle, whether it's Leyden
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: Robinson starting to compete more levely, you know, So has
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: kind of been entrenched there at left guard since day one.
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: Maybe Leyden Robinson starts to push him a little bit.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: Maybe that, you know, makes both guys better, right, Hopefully,
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: iron sharp and iron. So I've liked what I've seen
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: from Laydon Robinson. I think they may have found it's
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: easier to find interior guys later in the draft, like
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: on when he was a sixth round pick, Dave Anders undrafted, like,
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: it's easy to do that. So maybe they found something
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: with Laydon Robinson as a fourth round pick.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he's he's shown some progress, and then the
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: question is just when and how do you get him
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: in the lineup because the interior has been fine? And
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: are you moving Michael and Wennu what happens when Cole
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: Strange comes back? It's just moving pieces. But he looks
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: like a guy that will probably get some run at
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: some point this year.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: Yep, all right, who's your third?
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: My third, Romandro Stevenson.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think he's.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: Moving really well. Anybody who watches this show or any
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: of my shows knows one of my big pet peeves
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: with the team. One of my biggest pet peeves with
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: the team the last few years was the over usage
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: of Vermandra Stevenson. And I don't mean that to say
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: he's a bad player, because he's not. But any of
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: these running but you look at these running back dominant teams.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: They always fall off late in the year because in
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: the modern NFL it's just so hard to maintain that level.
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: And Stevenson was top ten in touches two years ago.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: He was top ten in touches last year before he
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: got hurt. And he told us at the end of
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: the twenty twenty two season that it was getting to him,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: like physically, the workload was impacting him. And you know,
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: he missed what month month and a half at the
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: end of last year, with so a little extra time
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: to kind of heal up, take care of his body
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: things like that. I think he said he didn't lose weight,
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: but redistributed it less body fat, more muscle, whatever it is.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: He looks a little more lean, and he's just getting
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: in and out of cuts a little quicker. Things like that.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: He's got a little extra something in his step. He
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: just looks healthy again. And I think that's good because
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I think you're gonna see a better version. I've said
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: this before. If it's one hundred and eighty touches versus
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: two fifty, and I'm just using round numbers here, but
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: like it's not that necessarily I want him touching the
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: ball less because I think he's bad, but I think
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: you get more bang for your buck. I think ultimately
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: those one hundred and eighty or two hundred touches have
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: more value than two fifty the four to five touches
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: a game that could maybe go to another running back.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Those add up by the time you get to like
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: Thanksgiving in December and into January. They have Antonio Gibson now,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: who I think is a strong second option who I
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: think the coaching staff will be willing to use. So
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: I think they're in a better position to manage his
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: workload better. I still think he's gonna be an important
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: part of the offense. I still think he's gonna be
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: very involved. But you know, I go back to the
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: Bailey's Appy game in twenty twenty two against the Lions
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: where they were up three scores with like three or
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: four minutes to go. Game's over, yeah, and they're just
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: running half back dive or duo or whatever it was
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: with Ramondre Stevenson, and he's taking big hits, and it's like,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: can Kevin Harris not do this? Like he doesn't need
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: to be taking these big hits and the game is over.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: I feel like He's gotten a good chance to heal
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: up after two very rough years, and I think that
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: bodes well for him this season.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: Yeah, he's looked good, and I feel like Antonio Gibson
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: has looked as advertising.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: He's looked pretty good too.
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: Yeah. Yes, I think both those guys are trending in
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: the right direction for the season. And Ramano Stevenson to
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: me just looks a little bit more like he was
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: a couple of years ago breaking tackles. You know, in
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: that preseason game, he bounces one outside, breaks the tackle
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: eleven yards, Like those were the types of runs that
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: he was making two years ago, you know, in twenty
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: two at the beginning, and then in twenty one even
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: when he was getting those opportunities, and then last year
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: his yards after contact numbers plummeted. They were just terrible,
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: like a full yard less than what it was the year.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: And I think it was just physically he was worn down.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know some of that was like he
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: was getting contacted earlier in the play. And I have
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: all the fancy next gen stats that I could probably
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: like rid him a blame of everything from last year,
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: right with his production, but his yards per his yards
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: per carry average. Ye, just the raw number was one
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: yard less exactly, and then his yards after contact was
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: one yard less exist So there you go. He wasn't
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: breaking tackles the last year. He wasn't finishing runs last year,
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: and I hopefully he's getting back to that way.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: I think you might see him He had a good
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: stiff arm in the in the preseason game. But I
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: think you might see him start running around guys more
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: as much as through them, just because he looks a
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: little quicker and it keeps you healthier.
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: So yeah, see, I love it. All right, let's do downs,
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: then we'll answer the calls and we'll talk about tomorrow night.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: My number one down uh to me? Right now, the
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: three most important figures in the Patriots organization are all down.
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: Elliot Wolf, Grod Mayo, Alex van Pelt. We gotta be better,
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: Elliot Wolf. The tackles are on you, okay. We've been
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: talking about it since March. I gave you a chance,
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: I gave you my trust. I said, I will allow
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: you to show me that chuk sikora For is going
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: to be viable, and show me that Mike on When
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: is a right tackle. I was skeptical, but I allowed
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: for it not working. Right, your plan's not working already
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: back to right tackle? On when who's already back to
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: right guard? You lied to me? Okay? I feel hurt
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: by that. Okay, down, Drod. Mayo to me is down
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: mainly because I feel like it's a little Felger and Mazzie,
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: But I kind of agree with them on this. I've
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: like stopped deflecting blame to AVP. Like he gets up
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: there and he and they ask him about the reps
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: for the quarterbacks and he's like, well, that's like an
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: AVP question.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: I think Alex van Pelt's the head coach of the offense.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: I think it's that kind of setup.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: And he said that, but like, you guys still need
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: to be on the same page. Well, like the communication
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: still needs to be there of why this is happening.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Or what I would say is, at what point, if
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: it's clearly not working, does Mayo go to Alex van
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Pelt and say, I'm the head coach? Change it? Yeah?
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: At what point? And in addition to the quarterback reps
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: with the offensive line? I wonder if there's a point
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: Mayo goes and says, I don't know what you're doing Like,
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: I've given you a chance to try this. Put Mike
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: back out at right tackle, get Lane Robinson in there,
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: get the rookie in a left tackle, or get Calum
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: Anderson and left tackle, Like you need to do something different.
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: This group isn't the answer.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it whether he wants it's fair. And I actually
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: I understand where he's coming from with the offense. He's
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: not an offensive guy, right, He's a green head coach.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: He's first year head coach. And I actually kind of
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: like that he knows his limitations, right, Like he knows
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: that he's not trying to coach offense, Like he knows
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: that that's not his side of the football. But to
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: your point, like the buck stops with him at the
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: end of the day, and when things aren't working, it
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: is his job to supervise the people that he put
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: in charge to run things. And right now I don't
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: feel like he's being a very good supervisor, if that
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: makes sense. Yeah, yeah, okay, And then AVP. I don't
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: know what's going on with the quarterbacks. I don't know
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: why Drake may is not playing in preseason games. I
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: have no idea what's going on with the offensive line.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: That's a train wreck. All of it just seems like
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: a mess right now. The procedural penalties that the nine
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: penalties I said yesterday, the bots as this is not
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: gonna cut it, this is this is not it. So
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: he's on the down most.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: Yeah, so I kind of phrased this differently. I was
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: just gonna say, like the plan, Yeah, the plan on offense,
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: going back to march, going back to free agency and
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: all of it. Yeah, the things we spend hours about
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: on the show in terms of the tackles and things
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: like that, like the personnel plan is coming up short
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: right now.
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: I have a very simple rule. Do you and I
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: spend a lot of time on this kind of stuff.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: We're probably a little bit more educated on it than most,
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: But we are not coaches and we are not general managers.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: If we can see the train and we're standing on
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: the tracks and the train is coming and we can
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: see it coming and they can't, that's a problem because
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: you and I are not general managers. We're not Elliott Wolf.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: We weren't raised by our father, who was a Hall
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: of Fame general manager and has been in the league
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: for twenty years scouting, right, and we're not Drod Mayo,
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: who is a pro bowler and then a head coach.
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: And we're not at that level. We get that here.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: Some people think we don't, but we get it. We're
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: not on their level. But so have us.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: Simpleton, you're telling me all those hours I've logged on
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: mad and mean nothing. Yes, that's fair.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: If us simple folk down here can tell you that
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: this tackle depth chart ain't gonna work in an NFL game,
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: then you should know it's not going to work. And
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: now if you're gonna sit here and tell me be patient,
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: Calvin Banks Junior's coming, Will Campbell's coming, Like that's gonna
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: be the plan. We're gonna worry about this next year.
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: I hear you. But you still need to be at
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: a point where you're functional enough at the rest of the.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: Audiene stop gap. You know who they need. Ironically, and
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: I kind of wrote this last night in my mail bag,
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: and I'm actually curious what you think of this. Yeah,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: and I know we got a couple more calls to get,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: so I'll try to be quick with this. But somebody
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: asked me, is it an organizational failure? The Patriots have
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: need at least one starting tackle since twenty nineteen and
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: refused to address it. And yes, yes, and no, I
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: don't know that they refuse to address it. I think
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: this all goes back to eighteen.
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: In eighteen, so Nate Solder leaves after the twenty seventeen season,
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: right yep. In eighteen, they draft Isaiah Win to be
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: the left tackle, and they signed Trent Brown as or
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: they trade for Trent Brown whatever it was, as an
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: insurance plan, and Isaiah Win blows out his achilles in
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: the preseason. Trent Brown gives them really good left tackle
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: play in twenty eighteen.
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: All right, they move on from Brown. We drafted Isaiah Win.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: I don't necessarily blame them for not adding another tackle
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: in that window because you used a first round pick
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: on this guy, and the goal was for him to
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: be the left tackle and they wanted to give him
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: a chance. So that's nineteen. That's twenty. They bring Trent
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: Brown back, and this is where you maybe go to
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: the organizational failure of it. Beyond the player development of
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: Isaiah Win. Trent Brown almost became a binkie. They couldn't
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: quit Trent Brown. We have Trent Brown as an option
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: in our back pocket, and I kind of understand it,
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: and I get it, and well that's going. They didn't
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: do that for nothing. They did it because they had
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: They needed to address quarterback, they need to address receiver,
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: they needed to address corner, and they basically were able
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: to continuously say, we have Trent Brown for now, we
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: have other significant needs. Let's address the other significant needs,
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: and we have Trent Brown in our back pocket. And
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: what you're seeing that they don't have a Trent Brown now.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: They continue to address other needs. Quarterback, receiver, were needs.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: They addressed those, they try to address them a receiver
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: to a bigger extent. In terms of free agency, I
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: think they went all in on Calvin Ridley and maybe
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: let some other free agents go, but there is no
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: Trent Brown to come save them. And I think that's
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: why they're in this spot now because maybe it was
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: supposed to be Riley Reef, maybe it was supposed to
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: be Calvin Anderson, the guys they signed last year. That
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: that to me is how they ended up in this spot.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: They didn't have that veteran in their back pocket. Maybe
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: the veterans they thought they were gonna have chookes of
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: corps for were never realistically going to be on that level.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a really a fair point with Trent Brown
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: because I almost couldn't quit him either, because when he's on,
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: he's When he's on, he's great. Yeah. His tape is
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: like top twenty left tackle in the NFL.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: And I think it was always there was never a
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: ton of competition because teams didn't want to deal with him. Yeah,
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: and there was always a lot like they were just
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: they were perfect for each other.
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, and he's not a bad player when when
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: he's mentally locked in and he's focused. So it is
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: you see it and you're like, okay, you know, I
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: if we can keep him on the rails, like I
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: get it the one and let me.
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: Just that's not necessarily me saying they should have resigned
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: Trent Brown. Yeah, but it's how did we get to it?
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: Because I think that that relationship was done both ways.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: It was done both sides.
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: When he went out and I think it was Dakota
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: Randall it when he was yetness and still like that.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: You can't give that interview and then come back.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: Right, yeah that, but how did we get here?
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: I think a lot of it is they Isaiahen didn't work.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: You can say they picked the wrong guy, they failed
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: to develop him. Whatever you want to call that, Isaiwen
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: didn't work. They were able to lean on Trent Brown
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: where they fixed other whole on the roster, and then
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: the clock ran out on Trent Brown before they were
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: able to actually get that next tackle in place. So
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: my one, if you want to call that mismanagement of
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: assets or you know, a lack of addressing, that's semantics.
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: At that point, I'd argue it's more of an asset
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: of mismanagement of assets than a refusal to address.
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: But sure, I guess it's not even a pushback on that.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: It's just more I agree with the philosophy or the
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: point that you and I do. Drive have been doing
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: the draft together for how long. Every single draft we've
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: ever covered together, tackle has been in need, right, every
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: single one, Because I think nineteen was probably the first
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: full draft we covered together. Yeah, and it was a need.
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: Then they drafted Yadnika just in the third round of
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: that draft. It's been a need for every single draft
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: since twenty nineteen. I'm not necessarily asking them in that
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: span to take a first round pick again after they
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: took one with Isaiah Win And we're kind of giving
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: that leash to Isaiah win but they they probably should
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: have used another top one hundred on a tackle.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: Probably, well they try again, So they tried Yadney could
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: just had injury issues, not top one hundred, but they
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: took two and twenty twenty one was Michael in the
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: sixth round. One was Mike and Winu who was never
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: going to be a left tackle, but he was a
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: guard in college, right, he's a guard? The other or
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: when did they draft Justin Huran? That was yes, so
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: because they also drafted didn't they draft William Sherman that
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: year too? Was okay? So like Justin Ran, you could
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: argue a guy maybe they gave up on too soon
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: because he was serviceable. He was probably never long term,
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: but they tried, they they and I that's that's why
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: I go back to how much do you realistically try?
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: What is the window where it's acceptable to use a
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: premium ass set on a player after using a first
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: round pick at that position? Like when does he to? Okay?
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: So fair and so I but what did they what
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: did they do in twenty two before the draft? But
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: I look at twenty two, Yeah, and you know where
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: I'm going with this?
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Cole Strange.
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: But but if they had drafted Tyler Smith instead of
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: col Strane and we're not in this mess.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: What did they do in twenty two before the draft.
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: But was their first personnel moved.
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: That offseason trading Shack Mason. No, they traded for Trent Brown. Oh,
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: I think that was twenty two, right, They.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: Traded Patform back for him. Might have been, which is
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: kind of my point. They they always they they wanted
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: to address Oh was twenty one, but they had him.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: I think they Yeah, they maybe they resigned. Yeah, So
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: March twenty first, they re signed Trent Brown to a
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: two year, fourteen million dollar deal.
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Right, And and we had talked a lot before
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: they resigned him. We thought he was gone, yeah, because
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: it hadn't gone well the year before.
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: We thought he was gone.
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: He went to the Raiders and then the Raiders cut
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: him and they brought him back.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: They they traded for him in twenty one.
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: Or they traded for him from the Raid, right, but
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: he was in.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: It was in the last year of his deal. Yeah,
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: and we thought he was gone. He was gone. He
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: was gonna go chase big money again. They wanted to
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: address guard. They wanted to address receiver Taekwon Thornton, right,
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: they wanted to address other things. So what did they do?
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: They went back out and they re signed Trent Brown.
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: The twenty two draft. That's really where it hit.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: Twenty two would have been the time. You're right, twenty
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: two would have been time to address it. But I'm
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: telling you that's what I think addressing it was was
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: trading for Trent Brown.
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: Okay, So on the same note, I guess we can.
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: I can just kind of talk about.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: This even Oh, that's right, we're doing ups and downs.
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: Yeah, second down here, just the entire offensive tackle depth chart,
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: just from top to bottom. I think A quarters four
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: has been the probably the best out of the group.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: And that's saying best very very lightly. But he's been okay.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: He's been fine at right tackle. A left tackle, whether
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: it's Vaderian Low or Calvin Anderson who's been wrapping at
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: left tackle for the most part. With this twos has
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: been terrible. They had Caden Wallace. It seemed like Kayden
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: Wallace was on a fast track and he was in
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: a good spot early on in camp. That has completely
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: that train has slowed completely down, And I don't know
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: what's going on with that? So your top four tackles
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: right now, of low a core four Anderson Wallace, I
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: can confidently say that I maybe think they have one starter, yeah,
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: in a core four, and then like one like Wallace
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: is still kind of an unknown, so I'll give him that.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: That is, I think Walls could be a starting caliber
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: level player, but only at the position that chooks a
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: core for places right, So.
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: They have no left tackle. They have no depth at
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: tackle because I don't think that Vederian lower Calvin Anderson's
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: even capable depth at this point.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: I think Calvin Anderson's a decent swing.
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: I don't think you have to see him trying to
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: block Nolan's That's fair. Uh So their tackle situation exactly,
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: I'll I'll give you guys the credit because I wasn't
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: able to on them on March exactly where all of
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: you thought it would be. On August fourteenth, their tackle
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: situation is where it is.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: You know. I mean, I couch my takes more than anybody.
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: I put more qualified and my takes and anybody give
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: myself away to weasel out of being wrong. I did
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: not do that on that take. That take, I pounded
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: the table.
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: I gotta be protect myself a little bit.
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: My second down U Chad Rown? Oh no, I just
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: I think he let Joey Slide catch up Joey Slid.
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: So Joey Sides jacked by the way Joey size Hugh
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: So we talked to Joey sly the other day. Yeah,
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: super nice guy. We spent a lot of time talking
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: about golf. Some of it out relates to kicking, but
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: just also kind of golf. Okay, don't too long on this.
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: You talked them for fourteen minutes. It was absurd, It's great.
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: We had great, We had a great.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: Cop looked over.
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: Three times and Joey Slide was still talking.
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: Yeah, he was enjoying it.
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: I think that was the longest non quarterback press conference
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: of the summer.
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: What is your problem with that? Me, Bob Socy, Brian Hines?
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: Who else was there?
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: For?
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: Good conversation with the guy?
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: So Joey Slide.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: After thirteen minutes of talking golf, yeah, somebody asked him
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: about the kickoff and he talked like, yeah, you know,
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: he compared it to golf. He was like, I used
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: to be the driver, the big leg kick it through
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: the end. Now you getta get the wedge out and
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: drop the ball in there, and it's more strategic, and
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: he kind of threw in at the end. And also,
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: I know I might be in a position tackle more.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: I'm excited for that and I'm ready for it. Didn't
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: say he's okay with it, said he's excited for it.
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: He gain big dude. I'm like, of course you're excited
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: for You're gonna take somebody's head off. Anyway, he had.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: They did this drill. Was this on Sunday?
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: Yeah, thirty more seconds.
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: They did this drill on Sunday where it was the
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: four live field goals reach kicker like they've done at
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: the end of each practice, get off your phone, listen
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: to me. Nope, but they had like the entire team
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: in a semi circle around the kicker just yelling at
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: him and like jumping up and down his face, waving
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: his arms. De Marcus Covington was really into it. Tetrika
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: was really into it, and Sly was the better kicker
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: that he's still perfect from fifty plus. Ryland I think
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: is one for three from fifty plus in this camp.
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: Ryland also had his first miss from the forty yard range.
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: He missed a forty eight yarder.
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: Okay, so just as some of miss up because I'm
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: falling asleep, Joey Sly right now, if you had to
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: call it right now, Joey SLID's your.
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: Kicker, I'd still maybe go look elsewhere. But between the
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: two of them, I'd go Joey Slide.
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm okay with rolling with the Sly guy. I'm
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: alright with it. He's got a big leg, He's gonna
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: give him some distance. Like their offense is not going
- 1:43:21Speaker 2: to be able to drive the ball consistently.
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: So what it comes down to right now between the
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: kickers to me, do you want the guy that's more
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: reliable from thirty to forty nine but that's his range,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: or do you want the guy that can step out
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: maybe give you a fifty plus?
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: What I like about Joey Sli's got a bigger leg, yep,
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: and he's got a little bit more moxie. Yeah, you know,
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: last year Ryland turned into a puddle. I saw that.
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: I don't need that again. I'll take the guy that's
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: got a little bit more moxie and has a little
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: bit more leg. All right, done, Joey Sly, I'm with
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: you all right, last one here for me, I would
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: just say that in general, the cornerback depth is something
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: that's creeped up a little bit. You know, we we've
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: had a lot of data now of no Jonathan Jones
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: and no Marcus Jones because of the injuries, and I
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: think Jonathan Jones is mostly just veteran management. But regardless,
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: we've seen a lot of Marco Wilson, Alex Austin, Isaiah
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: Bolden that next group. I was hoping that group would
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: be a little bit better. And then obviously when you
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: supplement that with Gonzo being just okay in camp and
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: not like dominant in camp, that probably doesn't help things either.
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: Marco Wilson, I'm with you. I think you mentioned this
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: earlier has probably been the best. Yeah, and I would
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: now probably have him on my roster projection, which I
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: haven't had him on yet. I think he's on for
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: me now, but I'll throw Sean Wade into that too.
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: I didn't mention him dial. You know, those guys, it
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: just feels to me like there's still a little bit
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: I'm not one hundred percent sure how deep they are anymore.
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: So I always hate doing this, but it's more of
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: a can't make the club from the top down. Yeah,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: Sean Wade missing these last few practices sucks because it
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: felt like he was making real momentum, making a towards
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: a roster spot. Now he's not out there the repping
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: Isaiah Bolden in the slot, which Wade's natural slot ability
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: was the best, like the biggest thing he had going
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: for him towards making the roster. This is just this
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: is valuable time he's missing right here, and I think
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: it's really gonna hurt his chances to make the team. Yeah,
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: he didn't do anything wrong, Like guys get hurt, it happens,
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: but that's the reality of it. If you get hurt
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: and somebody else steps up, that job might not be
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: there when he come back.
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I would. Now if I had to
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: redo my roster projection, I probably have Marco Wilson on
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: and set Wade.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: So I had I had Isaiah Bolden as the odd
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: man out of my last one, I'm gonna switch those
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: on my next one.
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: I think, Yeah, really quickly before I take these calls
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: and wrap a little bit of NFL news, JJ McCarthy
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: out for the year. Torn meniscus, all right, so that's
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: all right, full of meniscus repair, which means that he
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: is now out for the year.
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: So to relate it back to the pay and obviously,
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: you know, hoping the best for the hint for him
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: and the Viking and all that whatever. To relate it
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: back to the Patriots, because it is a Patriots show.
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: This is it is gonna be interesting to see what
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: happen with him in terms of his development. This is
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: a valuable, valuable year. He is losing. Forget not playing
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: in games, not being at practice. I'm sure he'll still
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: be around and being the meeting rooms, but it's tougher
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: to be engaged in that way. This is why you
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: have to be so careful with Drake May when it
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: comes to the offensive line.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: I didn't see the play exactly that he got hurt on.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: Did he get hurt on a contact injury or.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: It was I don't think anybody knows it was a
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: practice thing, because coming out of the game, nobody was
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: saying anything.
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: No.
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: I think it was in the game. I saw a
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: report yesterday that at some point in the game he
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: went to the sideline and said his knee felt weird. Yeah,
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: and they're like all right, we'll run test. But he
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: didn't take a big hit, he didn't get rolled up on.
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: It was a very much it's football, and that's you know,
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: you risk that with Drake May every time you put
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: him out there, and you have to take that risk
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: to when it's a cautionary tale. But I wouldn't even
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: say caution Well, I guess it is the people. There
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: are gonna be people who look at Drake May seven
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: snaps and say, we'll say this is why you don't
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: risk him. But I think it also shows you like
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: this is this has the potential to massively alter his career.
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: And people point to Joe Burrow. Burrow plaid three months
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: before he tours ACL or before got hurt as a
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: rookie towards ACL. That was his rookie, right, he played
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: three months. He got enough data that you know, missing
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: as much time as JJ McCarthy's gonna miss like he's
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: behind now he's behind his development. This is another guy
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: like Drake May that is a project and it it
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: it'll be interesting to see how this impacts and moving forward.
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: Also good chance for Sam Darnold, who Minnesota's had a
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: decent summer.
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: Okay, just my quick thing on JJ McCarthy. And this
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: is not an Andrew Luck moment. Okay, I'm not rooting
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: for injuries. I'm not happy that he's hurt.
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: Well, according to you, Andrew Luck didn't retire because of jury.
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: You know what I'm trying to say. I'm not trying
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: to like be an a hole about this, right, I'm
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: not rooting for injuries. I'm not happy he's hurt, none
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: of those types of things. But a part of me
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: is a little bit okay with the fact that he's
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: not gonna play this year. Because we said it on
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: during the draft, I can pull the receipts. I remember
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: saying this during right after the draft that because he's
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: playing in Kevin o'c donald's offense with Justin Jefferson and
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: Jordan Addison, if JJ McCarthy got on the field early on,
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: he was going to look better than Drake Man. Oh yeah,
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: it was gonna be kind of like a Mac Jones situation,
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: right and uh, and now, just if JJ, if Drake
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: May was sitting and holding the clipboard for the entire year,
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: JJ McCarthy is having a good rookie season in Minnesota.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: As you like to say sometimes Alex, that would not
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: have been good for the brand, all right, that would
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: not have been ever said, yes, yeah, that would not
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: have been good for the brand. That that would have
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: been tough deal well, and so selfishly.
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: I guess I we would have just had a deal
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: with people that don't understand how Oh yeah, you throw
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: at Justin Jefferson, you're gonna look pretty good. The Patriots
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: don't have Justin Jefferson.
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: All right, let's take these calls. Jake is in Lemonster.
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: What's up, Jake? Jake? You're there going once? All right?
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: Call us back, Jake and we'll get you on the air.
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: Sean is in Vancouver, what's up? Sean?
- 1:48:56Speaker 7: Hey, Alex thought I was with you from the beginning
- 1:48:59Speaker 7: about with the offensive line being a disaster preventing trick
- 1:49:04Speaker 7: me from playing right away. And you know, but I
- 1:49:07Speaker 7: don't see this as a team that's going to make
- 1:49:10Speaker 7: the playoffs. So I don't think you have to wait
- 1:49:12Speaker 7: till the last week of the season. If they could
- 1:49:15Speaker 7: just get this offensive line sorted out, you know, be
- 1:49:18Speaker 7: a week five, week six, whatever they do, that's when
- 1:49:21Speaker 7: they should play May because that's that's really the priority.
- 1:49:24Speaker 7: We want to see. If May is the future, because
- 1:49:26Speaker 7: this team isn't about now, it's about the future, and
- 1:49:28Speaker 7: we need we need to find that out. So we
- 1:49:30Speaker 7: need to find out if this guy is real. I
- 1:49:32Speaker 7: do have a question for you the guys though, how
- 1:49:35Speaker 7: is Antonio Gibson looked in pass blocking because he's going
- 1:49:38Speaker 7: to be needed as a passing down back. I'll take
- 1:49:41Speaker 7: it off the air, I think, good question.
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: Good questions on the first point, just real quick. Yeah,
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: that's where I've been right. Once the offensive line set,
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: that's what trick may and the problem is might take
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: more than five or six weeks to figure this thing
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: out at.
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: This point, right I think that's where we're at.
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: It might take you three months.
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: Yeah, as I like to do with you know, the
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: first point that he made about kind of they're not
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: gonna be playing We know they're not probably not gonna
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: be a playoff team. Like it's not gonna do with wins, right,
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: it was. It was more about protecting him and keeping
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: him healthy and giving him a chance back there to
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: succeed and all that kind of stuff. And right now,
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: it's hard to envision the offensive line coming together in
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: the short term to make that happen. By week five
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: or week six, like he was saying in terms of
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: bit blitz pick up. For Antonio Gibson, I do feel
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: like he's been used the route a lot more than
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: blitz pick up. Yeah, And I wonder if that's something
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: that a VP in this offense is gonna be a
- 1:50:36Speaker 2: little bit different than they're The old guard was one.
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: I don't know if it's gonna be. Bax didn't play
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: under Belichick until they understood pass protection, right, they were
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: not allowed on the field, especially in passing situations. Uh
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: number two. The Patriots would use the back a lot
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: more than some other teams and blitz pick up, especially
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: recently once like James White retired and stuff. So a
- 1:51:01Speaker 2: lot of teams, you know, especially in this West Coach tree,
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: they want to reset things so that the back can
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: get into the pattern. Like whatever you have to do
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: to release the back and not force the back to
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: stay in and blitz pick up, whether it's remiking, you know,
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: whatever like to do that. We don't want the back
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: to be in the backfield and blitz pick up as
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: much as we can prevent that. Reid is huge and
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: he reads huge on that is the running backs in
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: Kansas City hardly ever pass block. They're always in the pattern,
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: So I don't know how much they're gonna use him
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: in that, But I haven't necessarily watched specifically how he's
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: picked up blitzes and how he's looked in that regard,
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: but it hasn't been noticeably a problem either. I guess
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: this is the other way to put it.
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I would agree with you. I don't know that
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: he's had any like wow moments in pass pro, but
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: there haven't been many times I've seen him totally blown
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: aside me either, Like he's been serviceable, but he hasn't
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: done in the ton Like you said, it feels like
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: he's mostly been out in the pattern, and I think
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: that's how they're gonna use him. And realistically, if they
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: reach a point where they're like, all right, we need
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: the running back to be a part of pass pro.
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: Ramondra Stevens is one of the better pass blocking running
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: backs in the league, they'll probably just put him on
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: the field more at that point.
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Gibson and I actually really like that. So just
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: we only have a couple more minutes. I don't want
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: to get two bogged down in the next as the nose,
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: but when you think about it's a numbers game, right,
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: It's always a numbers game. And if the back is
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: releasing in the pattern, then somebody has to account for
- 1:52:26Speaker 2: him in coverage, like there's a there has to be
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: a player for player in coverage. So in theory, if
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: you always were releasing the back out of the backfield,
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: then the backs guy cannot blitz all the time. Otherwise
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: that's where you're just gonna go with the ball. It's
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: gonna be easy to right. So that's how these other
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: teams operate, is that if you're gonna blitz and we're
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: gonna release the back, well, then we're gonna have five
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: in the in the pattern, and you're only gonna have
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: six guys in coverage, and there's gonna be somebody open, right,
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: And so we'll devise away that with hot routes and
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: things like that that somebody's got to be open at
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: that point. So in theory, you shouldn't have to have
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: the back pass protect all the time. Now, there's going
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: to be certain protections that they will, and you know
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: there's certain instances where they will, but in general, a
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: lot of these teams, you know, like the Floor I know,
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: for a Fact and Shanahan are two guys that they
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: want the quarterback in the center to figure out a
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: way to get the back into the pattern at all times,
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: Like just remight get it, Atlanta, Slide the protection this way,
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: slide it that way, whatever you gotta do. We don't
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: want the back just sitting back there and picking up
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: linebackers like it just doesn't help us as an offense.
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: So I feel like AVP is going to be in
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: more of that school. But we'll see. It's a good
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: question and we'll see. But I hope to an extent
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: that the days of Pierre Strong is just never going
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: to get on the field because they can't pick up
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: a freaking linebacker and blitz pick up or Kevin Harris,
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: like you're mentioning the Lions game a couple of years ago,
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: Ormandre is still in the game when they're up thirty points, Like,
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: I hope those days are gone because I think that
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: was a little an instinct, you know, archaic way of
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: looking at it. I want to talk just to wrap
- 1:54:07Speaker 2: up the show. I know you have one more call
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: and we'll get to it, but I do want to
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: give our takes on Tomorrow night really quickly. So what
- 1:54:13Speaker 2: are you looking forward to tomorrow night? What are you
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: expecting to see in terms of Drake May's participation.
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: So this is the big question because Garrod Mayo at
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: the beginning of the week said he's gonna play more,
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: He's gonna play more, He's gonna play more, and then
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: the offensive line happened, and I wonder if that's a recalculation.
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: I don't know that anything would surprise me at this
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: point in terms of valid him not playing, I guess
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: would surprise me him not playing at all, not playing
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: a single snap. Beyond that, I'm kind of ready for anything.
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: I like that you're kind of ready for anything.
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: Yeah, he could play five snaps, he could play forty.
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: Both would make sense to me at this point.
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't think he's gonna play a high volume
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: like forty, you know, JJ McCarthy. I know it's a
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: bad example now that with the injury, but I think
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: he played like thirty thirty three. Yeah, I think he
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: was the most with thirty three out of the rookie quarterbacks.
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: I don't expect him to play that much, but I
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: do expect him to play enough that we have some
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: tape to like dig into and I say we, I
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: really mean them, yeah and you yeah, obviously me too,
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: But yeah, I expect to have come away from this
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: where we have like, okay, we have ten to twelve
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: dropbacks of real dropbacks, not screens you know, or like
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: third and ten dump offs into the flat, like actual
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: quarterback plays. Last week we got one. We got one
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: play action drop that went through Jalen Riger's hands. I
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: think that they will try to get to about ten, twelve,
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: fifteen of those this week. But I was dead wrong
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: about how they were going to use the quarterbacks last week,
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: so I couldn't. I don't. Maybe don't take my word
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: for it, but that's what my gut tells me. The
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: other thing, I just really quickly, I want to mention
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: I didn't think that the rookie receivers look great on
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: film with their route running last week. It's just something
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: that I texted you about it. I'm not like, well,
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: I said def Con five earlier, red alert by the
- 1:55:58Speaker 2: offensive line. This is like one or two, like def
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: Con one or two. It's not something I'm like crazy
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: worried about, right, But I just feel like Jalen Polk
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: in particular, Jalen Polk's gonna have to have a PhD
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: in route running right, Like he's gonna have to be
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: an expert technician in order to uh to thrive in
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: the league. Things like getting defenders off their leverage, eating
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: up cushion against off coverage efficientcyy efficiency through the top
- 1:56:24Speaker 2: of the route. Like I didn't love those elements of
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: his game last week. It looked like it was moving
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: a little fast for him the first time out, So
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: maybe that slows down for him eventually. But he's got
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: to think the game, like if he's got a corner
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: that's eight yards off, he's got to eat up the space.
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: Like you gotta come out of the blocks, man, Like
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: you gotta come out of the blocks like Noah Lyles, right,
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: you gotta get up on him. And then you got
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: a maybe bad example because he did. He had to.
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: He had to flying twenty in that one hundred meter,
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: not the not the first, not the ten yard split.
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: But you gotta come out of the blocks, and uh,
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: you got to eat up the cushion, and then you
- 1:57:04Speaker 2: want to get up on the toes right, and then
- 1:57:05Speaker 2: you you make the brake happen at the top of
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: the route. But if you don't get the defender to
- 1:57:10Speaker 2: even think for a second that you might run by him.
- 1:57:13Speaker 2: Then your toast like you gotta make the defender think like, Okay,
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: this guy's got you gotta get him back on his heels.
- 1:57:18Speaker 2: Yeah's and I'm either in my pedal or on back
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: of my heels or my hips are opening up to
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: the field like something has to happen there from the defender. Similarly,
- 1:57:26Speaker 2: he ran a route a little quick out that the
- 1:57:28Speaker 2: defender had outside leverage on him. He's like, you know,
- 1:57:30Speaker 2: right shaded outside leverage, and he just ran right into
- 1:57:33Speaker 2: the leverage. And I'm not saying that he should have
- 1:57:35Speaker 2: optioned routed it or anything, but if you know that
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: you're gonna run it out and you're locked into a
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: route and you have outside leverage corner, you have to
- 1:57:41Speaker 2: make a move at the line of scrimmage in your
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: release to get him off the leverage right, like give
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: a little fake to the inside or stem it up
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: to the inside quickly and then come back to the outside.
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: You gotta think the game. And I didn't really see
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: that from him in that game in that film, and
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: Javon Baker a little bit to that extent too, But
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: I didn't necessarily expect Javon Baker to be at that level.
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: Jalen Polk's gonna have to be at that level. You know,
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: Jacobe Myers was at that level, is at that level.
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: The other comparison, Tyler Boyd, like Keenan Allen, like some
- 1:58:10Speaker 2: of the other names people throw out, Like, those guys
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: are at that level, So I gotta see a little
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: bit more they're out of Jalen Polk. I'm so torn
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: on Jalen Polk. Like all the things that we talk
- 1:58:22Speaker 2: about during draft season when it comes to receivers, this
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: one's like really giving me up at night. I'm so
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: torn about what to think about him because you know,
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: my typical preferences are separation, ability, speed, like all the
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: Like Zay Flowers is like my guy, right, Like that's
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: the type of receiver I look at and say, that
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: guy's gonna translate, that guy's gonna be good in the league.
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: Jalen Polk does all the other things well, he catches
- 1:58:46Speaker 2: the ball, well, he's physical, he's got some Alpha in him,
- 1:58:50Speaker 2: and he's got kind of that a little bit of
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: attitude to him. But he doesn't separate and normally I'm
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: out on those types of guys, but I do see
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: it with Jalen Polk, like how he could build himself
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: into a good NFL receiver, but he's gonna have to
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: refine his route running and be like an expert expert
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: route runner in or to make that happen. So those
- 1:59:08Speaker 2: are a couple of things. Is there anybody else other
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: than the quarterbacks that you're looking out for.
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: That third string tight end battle? But we can take
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: this call. I won't run it down third thing.
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: Third string tight end is more important than the caller.
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: Nowchic tachical? All right, all right, John, You're more important
- 1:59:24Speaker 2: than the third string tight end? What do you got?
- 1:59:28Speaker 8: I was actually kind of digging in here waiting to
- 1:59:29Speaker 8: see what parts was gonna say. Huge fan of both
- 1:59:32Speaker 8: of you guys. I think my wife's sick of hearing
- 1:59:34Speaker 8: both your voices at this point. But I think kind
- 1:59:38Speaker 8: of like my biggest takeaway from listening to your guys
- 1:59:40Speaker 8: a show and the coverage and like the whole Drake
- 1:59:42Speaker 8: may experience and not to beat like Bill Belichick again
- 1:59:46Speaker 8: because we've done that, but I just think it shows you,
- 1:59:48Speaker 8: like how many years and how many years I've listened
- 1:59:51Speaker 8: to you guys talk about where they just never addressed,
- 1:59:54Speaker 8: like like glaring holes on offense, whether it's tackle, offensive
- 1:59:59Speaker 8: line depth, receiver deaf like topping receiver talent. And I
- 2:00:02Speaker 8: think it's like years and years and years of this
- 2:00:06Speaker 8: like accruing and to the point where now you can't
- 2:00:08Speaker 8: even get Drake May out in a preseason game because
- 2:00:11Speaker 8: he's going to get his head ripped off. And like
- 2:00:12Speaker 8: we saw in the joint practice yesterday, like you put
- 2:00:15Speaker 8: him out there with twos, even against another team's number twos,
- 2:00:17Speaker 8: Like it's not competitive. So I think people need to
- 2:00:21Speaker 8: like I think you guys have done a good job
- 2:00:22Speaker 8: of this. I can't listen to ninety five anymore, but
- 2:00:25Speaker 8: like you need to pump the brakes and like, let
- 2:00:27Speaker 8: Drake May develop so that way in two years we're
- 2:00:30Speaker 8: not sitting around being like what happened to Drake May?
- 2:00:32Speaker 4: You sees ghosts?
- 2:00:33Speaker 8: He's leaning off his back foot, Like we just need
- 2:00:36Speaker 8: to calm down. But thank you guys, love listen.
- 2:00:37Speaker 4: To your show.
- 2:00:38Speaker 2: Thanks John, thanks for the call. Well said, that's exactly.
- 2:00:40Speaker 2: That's a great way to end my first thirty five
- 2:00:43Speaker 2: minutes of standing on the ledge at the Tobin Bridge
- 2:00:46Speaker 2: that that's exactly where it's at right now, is patients
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: like we are now yesterday. To me, first of all,
- 2:00:53Speaker 2: just really quickly, I know we have to end. Yeah,
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: but I listened to Badard on the way home last night.
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: He like saw ghosts, like looks. It was like he
- 2:01:00Speaker 2: saw a dead person the way he was talking about
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: practice yesterday. And I think it was genuine like he
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: was Jenny.
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: Was rattled by the ducks and horses question, but okay.
- 2:01:08Speaker 2: Yeah, he was genuinely rattled, and I was not quite
- 2:01:13Speaker 2: that far, but I was in this. I think we're
- 2:01:15Speaker 2: all in a similar place where yesterday was a real
- 2:01:19Speaker 2: wake up call to the fact that this team's got
- 2:01:23Speaker 2: a ways to go. And we watched a team in
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: the Eagles, who I mentioned at the top of the show,
- 2:01:29Speaker 2: have the third best odds in some places to win
- 2:01:31Speaker 2: Super Bowl fifty nine. Are one of those teams eight
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: to ten teams, let's call it that that has a
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl. And you saw
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: what that looked like, and then you saw what the
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: Patriots offense looked like, and all of a sudden, it's like,
- 2:01:43Speaker 2: we need to take a big step back, right we've
- 2:01:46Speaker 2: been in the campgrind. We've been at every practice. It's
- 2:01:49Speaker 2: been a couple of weeks of this every single day,
- 2:01:52Speaker 2: almost being out there watching for two hours. I think
- 2:01:55Speaker 2: we all need to take a deep breath. We need
- 2:01:57Speaker 2: to take a big step back, and we need to
- 2:01:59Speaker 2: realize that this is gonna this is gonna be a while.
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: Are we going to, uh do Will Campbell check ins
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: on the show this year?
- 2:02:06Speaker 2: We might have to, and Luther Burden and we'll Travis Hunter,
- 2:02:11Speaker 2: Will Campbell cal we all need to. This was a
- 2:02:14Speaker 2: wake up call yesterday and that and that's the great
- 2:02:17Speaker 2: way at the end of the show. So, uh, we'll
- 2:02:19Speaker 2: be back next week, probably the same day, same time, roughly.
- 2:02:24Speaker 2: I would say this is kind of we're not sure
- 2:02:27Speaker 2: exactly when we'll be on during the regular season. We
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: still got to work out what their the football schedule
- 2:02:32Speaker 2: is and all that kind of stuff. But for now,
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: this is uh, this has been good. Uh, So we'll
- 2:02:36Speaker 2: probably be back next week around the same time, really quickly.
