Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Was Luka Doncic For Anthony Davis The Worst Trade In NBA History? | Eric Messersmith & Brian Johnson
Transcript
- 0:00All right, Brian, I wanted to turn to the world of sports.
- 0:01We had a massive NBA trade and, and I mean, this is not an
- 0:05exaggeration to say I was shocked by this.
- 0:08I wanted to lead. With this, you wanted to lead
- 0:11the show with this Luka Doncic. For those who don't know, one of
- 0:15the best players in the world, only 25 years old.
- 0:18The Dallas Mavericks traded him to the LA Lakers for Anthony
- 0:22Davis, who's a very good player but not quite a level of dodge
- 0:27and a first round pick, and Max Christie as well.
- 0:29Yeah. And they it, it it's crazy to
- 0:33see two names like this traded for each other.
- 0:36It's also I, I don't ever remember A-Team trading a guy
- 0:41who's a top five player in the league.
- 0:43I mean, he just LED this team, The Mavericks of the Finals last
- 0:47year in the prime of his career, maybe even before the prime of
- 0:50his career. He's only 25, about to be 26.
- 0:53It it just is. It was a stunning deal.
- 0:58When I, I saw this like late at night, I'm not sure what time it
- 1:01broke, but I remember waking up in the morning and actually
- 1:05thinking I was having like a fever dream And I had to go back
- 1:09to the computer early in the morning and like confirm that it
- 1:12was true. Because I seriously, I don't
- 1:15remember why I read it. It might have been Facebook.
- 1:16Someone posted something you you can't believe anything you see
- 1:19on social media. So I went to bed 'cause my first
- 1:22reaction was that no, that's fake.
- 1:26Like there's no way. For our listeners who aren't
- 1:29really into sports, I think you did a pretty good job with
- 1:32context. But there are three players in
- 1:35NBA history that averaged 28.7 rebounds and seven assists 7
- 1:39years into their career for seven seasons.
- 1:42Those are Oscar Robinson, LeBron James, and Luka Doncic.
- 1:46That's the list. Incredible.
- 1:48Yeah. 25 years old. Yeah, so it's been 3 days so
- 1:53we've had some time to sit on it and I don't want to do like
- 1:55total sports talk radio beer. But what did you think?
- 2:00Like what do you think of the trade?
- 2:02Both sides from Dallas side, from Lakers side?
- 2:05Is the GM of the Mavs the dumbest person alive?
- 2:08Is it possible? Like what happened?
- 2:11I think, look, I think the Lakers clearly won the trade.
- 2:15Anytime you get not only the best player in the trade, but a
- 2:18guy who's maybe one of the best players in the league and could
- 2:21go down as one of the best players all time you've won the
- 2:24trade. That that said, the if you read
- 2:27the reporting ESPN did and others, the reason Dallas did
- 2:31this is they thought Luco was not dedicated enough, that he
- 2:37was out of shape, that he was fat.
- 2:39Apparently he'd ballooned to like 270 lbs that was causing
- 2:42his his injury issues. He wasn't, he wasn't, he's not,
- 2:46he's a terrible defender. We saw that in the finals last
- 2:48year. I mean, he's, he's such a
- 2:50liability on that side of the floor and they felt like they
- 2:53had given him a lot of rope and he never showed them he could
- 2:57get his conditioning right. And then the other thing is the
- 2:59finances he was due to make. He was eligible for extension in
- 3:04the summer for five years and I think $350 million, so about 70
- 3:11million a. Year now, that is, it's 100
- 3:14million less. Now, right, but so Dow, he would
- 3:18have signed that deal. Dallas would have had to offer
- 3:20him that deal. That is an insane amount of
- 3:22money to give to someone. Now, I think it's worth the
- 3:24gamble with Luca. But they it is telling that the
- 3:28people that were around him and that saw him and worked with
- 3:31him, looked at, looked at his accomplishments, how good he is
- 3:35and can be the money they might owe him and said, yeah, not
- 3:40really worth it. We'd rather take our chances
- 3:42with a good defender, a great defender and a really good
- 3:45player who's only 32, like Anthony Davis.
- 3:47That is, that is pretty damning. That said, the upside with Luca
- 3:52is so big. You mentioned, I mean, you
- 3:55mentioned his stats. So he was rookie of the year.
- 3:59Yeah. And then starting in Year 2
- 4:01through last year, through his sixth year, those five seasons.
- 4:05First team. He was all NBA first team every
- 4:08single Year 5 for five and if he hadn't gotten hurt this year,
- 4:13he's missed a a lot of time. He should be back soon.
- 4:15He probably would have would have done it again this year.
- 4:18SO5 all in I I just looked at this the other day.
- 4:21All time 5 Remember, he's 25 years old.
- 4:26He has five first team All NBA selections.
- 4:29That's as many as the following players, Dwight Howard, George
- 4:33Gervin, Julius Irving and Charles Barkley.
- 4:38That's right, that is more than that is more than Chris Paul,
- 4:41Steph Curry, John Havlicek, Dirk Novitsky, Moses Malone and Kevin
- 4:47Garnett have in their entire careers.
- 4:50These are mostly Hall of Famers. One more he what?
- 4:54They're all helping. One more he will tie Hakeem
- 4:58Elijah won Kevin Durant, James Harden at six all for and he you
- 5:03know he's going to get at least one more.
- 5:05He's only a few away from getting as many all NBA first
- 5:08teams as Wilt, as Shaq, as Magic, as Bird.
- 5:11That's incredible. He's 25 years old.
- 5:13So yes, the Lakers won this trade and yes, you have to do
- 5:16this because look, maybe this lights the fire under him
- 5:20because if he has been really out of shape and fat and
- 5:25struggling because of that and he's still making all NBA first
- 5:29team every single year, what could he do if he actually took
- 5:34care of himself and put down the fork and the beer and really got
- 5:38serious about diet and nutrition?
- 5:39And maybe this is what will do it.
- 5:41I mean, if a team, if you're 25 years old and an international
- 5:45superstar and widely regarded as one of the best players in the
- 5:47world and a team looks at you that you just led to the finals
- 5:52last year and says I don't want to deal with him anymore.
- 5:56I mean, if that doesn't light a fire under you to just and if
- 5:59nothing else to show them, I don't know what will.
- 6:03Yeah, I oh God, buddy. I just, I'm trying to make sense
- 6:09of it from a basketball standpoint.
- 6:11And I guess if you want to make the argument about defense and
- 6:14everything you just said, fine. Like maybe Dallas has a short
- 6:18window here with Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving.
- 6:21All right, cool. But I can't make any sense of it
- 6:24from a business perspective. I mean, he he was that city.
- 6:29He's one of those athletes that I associated with a city, you
- 6:33know what I mean? Like I associate Derek Jeter
- 6:36with the New York Yankees. I, I associate Patrick Mahomes
- 6:40with Kansas City. I associated Luka Doncic with
- 6:42Dallas. You know what I mean?
- 6:45He, he still had, he had the eighth highest selling jersey
- 6:49this year. He pretty much does every year.
- 6:52You know, that he's must see TV like he's the thing in Dallas
- 6:56when the Cowboys aren't there, you know, And now out in LA, you
- 7:01know, I think he's going to make up that $100 million in a lot of
- 7:04different ways. LA is such a larger market.
- 7:07So I think you can sell that to him.
- 7:09But I do wonder in athletics at what point money stops
- 7:14mattering. And it really just has to be
- 7:16about your desire to be the best at the thing that you do.
- 7:20Because Luca will probably make almost a billion dollars in his
- 7:23NBA career by the time he's done.
- 7:27With endorsements and everything.
- 7:28Yeah, with endorsements, his salary, everything else, he's
- 7:31probably going to make a billion dollars.
- 7:32Like we, I think we can project that out.
- 7:34Like give or take, LeBron is a billionaire.
- 7:37You know, these guys bring in so much revenue and I don't want to
- 7:40get into the thing whether they deserve it or not.
- 7:41I actually think they do given the amount of money that they
- 7:44bring in. But what I'm saying is at what
- 7:46point is it a JOB and at what point are do you want to compete
- 7:50on the highest level? I I would imagine that there's a
- 7:53conversation to be had there. Absolutely.
- 7:57And the Lakers got their franchise player again.
- 8:00They they always find a way to do this for the next 10 or 15
- 8:03years. I think he and LeBron are going
- 8:05to work really well together. People who say, well, they both
- 8:07handle the ball. I mean, come on.
- 8:09He was with Kyrie Irving last year.
- 8:10Those were two players, Luke and Kyrie that really need the ball
- 8:13in their hands and they were fine.
- 8:14LeBron, they're they're both very unselfish.
- 8:17The problem for the Lakers is they don't have any big man now.
- 8:23They've never been. They've got, they've got two
- 8:25days left. Thursday afternoon is the trade
- 8:28deadline. They need to bring in a center,
- 8:30but I think they're gonna, they're gonna be a problem for a
- 8:33lot of people. I I think the, the problem for
- 8:35the Lakers too is defensively, if they don't get a center who's
- 8:39maybe a rim protector that line up that they might put out there
- 8:43late in a game with 40 year old LeBron, who's not the defender
- 8:46he used to be, and Luca and Reeves who's become a really
- 8:51good player and, and, and really fights hard defensively, but is
- 8:54not a great defender and then no center potentially that could be
- 8:58a problem. But man, offensively they are
- 9:01going to light it up. So I'm trying to go.
- 9:05I was going to say, I think sometimes people just think when
- 9:07you put great players together that it works out.
- 9:10And you have to remember that that's not always the case.
- 9:12Like, it does take time for people to learn how to play
- 9:16together. I mean, we just assumed that
- 9:17when LeBron went to Miami, they were going to win it all with D
- 9:21Wade and Bosch. And yeah, they made it to the
- 9:22Finals, but ultimately they lost to a Mavericks team with Dirk
- 9:28Nowitzki because they just didn't have a lot of time
- 9:32playing together. And eventually, because they're
- 9:34amazing and they're great, they figured it out.
- 9:36But I think for anyone who thinks Lucas just going to show
- 9:38up in LA and now they're going to go on this run, I don't think
- 9:42that's going to happen. I also think it's going to take
- 9:44AD some time to integrate himself into Dallas.
- 9:47I think Dallas is a very good team.
- 9:50How much NBA have you watched this year?
- 9:53A decent amount, but I I only really watch the Lakers and the
- 9:56warriors. Those are the two teams.
- 9:58If they're if one of them, one of those two are on, I'll watch
- 10:02any other team and not so much, but occasionally I'll check out
- 10:05some other games. But I now that the NFL is over,
- 10:07I will start to watch more NBA because other than the NFL and
- 10:11some college football, NBA is really the only sport I watch on
- 10:14the on the regular. Especially like post All Star
- 10:18break. I'll I'll be watching more, but
- 10:20I think Dallas could be better this year than the Lakers the
- 10:22rest of the year. I, I, yeah, maybe for one year
- 10:25they may be because AD is is a guy who could dominate
- 10:29defensively. They have another, they have
- 10:31Gafford, who's really got a lot of athletic ability.
- 10:34He can play the center position. AD can play power forward.
- 10:37And then you got Kyrie still, that's a pretty good team.
- 10:40But W is going to be very the West.
- 10:42Is loaded, dude. That's what I was going to go
- 10:44down the list. There's probably going to be two
- 10:47pretty good teams that miss the playoffs.
- 10:50Like even though the Spurs just got Deer and Fox, who I really
- 10:53like, and they have Wembi, they might be on the outside looking
- 10:57in. I mean, you have teams like
- 10:58Oklahoma, right? Now they are.
- 11:00I watched the Houston Rockets play the other day.
- 11:02They are a team of Mad Men dude. They are so athletic and
- 11:07aggressive. I love watching the Houston now.
- 11:10They're super young, they're super young and I think they
- 11:14really are lacking a superstar. But I, I, I mentioned A-Team
- 11:17like that in the context of this conversation to say where does
- 11:20it like the Warriors might miss the playoffs, the Golden State
- 11:24Warriors. Of Steph.
- 11:25Curry. Might.
- 11:26Miss the playoffs, The the West is what they do in.
- 11:28The next two days it is right now the Warriors and I'm sorry,
- 11:32Phoenix and Sacramento are the last two.
- 11:35It's a three-way tie for the last two play on spots right now
- 11:38between Sacramento, Phoenix and Golden State.
- 11:40And then the Spurs, who as you mentioned just got to Aaron Fox.
- 11:43Normally that would be the biggest trade of the deadline.
- 11:45They're only three games back now.
- 11:47I think Phoenix losing Fox, I'm sorry, Sacramento will probably
- 11:50fall back, but those other teams aren't.
- 11:53I mean, Phoenix might get Jimmy Butler.
- 11:55That's the other big domino to fall.
- 11:56He clearly wants to go there. It's going to be wild man,
- 11:59because I think I love about the West the rest of this year in
- 12:02the play offs is you have these young teams like Oklahoma City,
- 12:05which has been the best there in the West.
- 12:06I like them the most. SGA is probably going to win the
- 12:10MVP you've got. You mentioned Houston, Memphis
- 12:13is another. Mostly just hanging around.
- 12:16They're your top three. And then behind them you've got
- 12:19these veteran, yeah, grizzled teams like Denver, who, you
- 12:24know, just one or two years ago, the Lakers, the Clippers with
- 12:27Harden. You've got now Dallas and
- 12:31Phoenix, especially if they get Butler, throw Minnesota in
- 12:34there. Yeah, that's good.
- 12:35I'm excited for the. I know the NBA people are
- 12:37saying, well, I know. Yeah.
- 12:39I, I'm still into the NBA and I think the parody, the, the weird
- 12:44thing about the NBA is it was, it was an entertaining sport and
- 12:47grew to a pretty big level. It grew to probably the second
- 12:50biggest sport in the country without much parody for a long
- 12:53time and sometimes with almost no parody.
- 12:56I mean, literally, Jordan wanted it almost every year, every a
- 12:58while. But now I we have had how many
- 13:02years in a row with a different champion?
- 13:03What are we up to now? It's like 6 or seven years in a
- 13:06row, Yeah. With a different champion.
- 13:08No, because. Golden State was lost
- 13:09back-to-back. Right, it is wide open right now
- 13:14in the West and in the East. Cleveland, another young team.
- 13:18They're they're great, they're best record league, but are they
- 13:20going to do it in the playoffs? I don't know.
- 13:21I guess Boston, but I'm I'm buying stock in the NBA right
- 13:25now for the second-half of the season, I think.
- 13:26It was great for this trade is so we agreed here.
- 13:29This trade is great for the NBA, though.
- 13:31It's an interesting conversation about parody, But my only point
- 13:34to that is for people not watching the NBA, check out a
- 13:37game. It's a dude.
- 13:39It's so different than when we were kids.
- 13:41The athleticism is off the charts when Benyama is an alien
- 13:46from another planet. Like he should be illegal.
- 13:49Did you see him block Giannis twice in like 30 seconds the
- 13:53other day? It was incredible.
- 13:55How was he allowed to play? He's like a cheat code.
- 13:57He's dude. When When Benyama figures it out
- 14:00that might be the next time that parody dies is when Lembin Yama
- 14:04just figures out how to play he's.
- 14:05Already starting to. No, I know he's really good, but
- 14:08I'm saying if I don't see how anyone's going to beat them.
- 14:13He's so good already at 21 years old or what was he 20 years?
- 14:16He's so good it's insane. He's already probably the best
- 14:19defensive player in the league and a really good offensive
- 14:22player too in his second season. And now he has another All Star
- 14:26with him and the Aaron Fox. And they might not be done
- 14:28either with the they got a ton of first round picks still that
- 14:31they could trade. They might not be done this
- 14:34before the trade deadline or in the offseason.
- 14:36So I look, I know people have been doing on the NBA a lot
- 14:39lately and I know earlier in the season the ratings were down,
- 14:43but and I know people complain about the three-point shot.
- 14:45I still find the NBA pretty entertaining and I think it's
- 14:49the parody really is making it even more so now.
