- 2:57and talk about a really special event that's going to be happening soon at the
- 3:01YMCA camp over in Scott Depot. It's happening on Saturday July twenty seconds,
- 3:09called Camp Menda Heart. Mike Dupay is a director of Breavement and Spiritual Care
- 3:15services at Hospice Karen. He joined us now, Mike, good morning,
- 3:16how are you, sir? Good morning Dave. Thanks for having me,
- 3:19Thank you for being there. Now, I got the title wrong. I
- 3:22think of where it's going to be. It's camp, and my pronouncements right
- 3:24high Tour, Well Camp, High Tour is the Try County YMC. Okay,
- 3:29that's what it's called. Okay, I just always called to YMS gay
- 3:30Camp. I've learned something out here on the show today. Never too old
- 3:34to learn. Welcome to the show. Let's talk about the hospice organization of
- 3:38that you're part of it as an overall to give us you overall picture.
- 3:40Well Hospice we are end of life care and we are able to take patience
- 3:46with a diagnosis of six months or less to live, and we provide a
- 3:52bunch of services to provide that quality end of life care. We have a
- 3:57medical director on staff, we have nerve, we have social workers, we
- 4:01have chaplains, we have counselors, we have CNAs. So we provide a
- 4:06holistic approach to care. And I'll say this, Mica is someone who's had
- 4:10a pair that was treated in a hospice type organization years ago. My father.
- 4:15I know firsthand the amazing work that you folks do in this whether it's
- 4:19here or where wherever it is, I mean, it's it's it's an amazing
- 4:23work you do. Yeah, thank you for that. But we try to
- 4:27get our patients as early as possible so we can get those services set up.
- 4:30And once those services are set up, we can provide the highest invest
- 4:33quality of end of life care. Let's talk about what you're going on.
- 4:36What you have going on over in Putnam County in July twenty second. July
- 4:40twenty second is known as Camp Mentehart and Camp Mentehart is a camp for greeting
- 4:45children ages five to eighteen years old, and we provide this. It's an
- 4:48annual camp. It's a one day camp. The registration begins at eight o'clock
- 4:53between eight to eight thirty and we have a lot of events, fun events,
- 4:59but also some seri events. So we provide an atmosphere of having fun
- 5:02and grief education so that children can learn how to cope and manage their feelings
- 5:06of grief. So what who are the who? Who's your target here?
- 5:12Who are these kids? I mean, what kind of kids would you be
- 5:15looking at to attend this camp? Yeah, we're looking for well not looking
- 5:18looking. Yeah, we're offering this camp. Yes, offering the camp to
- 5:25children who who've lost a loved one. So it's available to anyone, not
- 5:29just hospice families, but also to the community. So we're providing that service
- 5:33for children who've lost a loved one. So I mean we're talking to you
- 5:36know, a parent, grandparents, sibling, things of that nature. Absolutely,
- 5:41friend, sibling, m grandparent, parents, Yes, exactly. I
- 5:45think sometimes well, and again I always say on the show when I talk
- 5:48about anything related to kids, always say I'm not a parent, and I
- 5:51throw that out there. But sometimes kids, um process grief. I would
- 5:59think process grief if a whole lot differently than what adults do, depending on
- 6:03their ages. Yes, children process grief. For example, the younger ones
- 6:08when when they have questions they'll answer, They'll they'll ask the questions, and
- 6:12when those questions are satisfied, they may go out to play and go out
- 6:15and do their thing and playing and whatnot, and then later come back with
- 6:18another question. M So it's kind of that given take of just kind of
- 6:23discovery someone they have time to think about it or do all loot it or
- 6:27yes, or something to that nature. Again, we're talking with Mike Dupay
- 6:30who's the director of Bereavement and Spiritual Care Services of Hospitals CARE about this big
- 6:33camp that they're gonna be doing in over in Putnam County on Saturday, July
- 6:38second there at the YMCA camp. What ages are we looking for for the
- 6:41kids at the camp? We are looking for again, we're offering them just
- 6:45offering recruiting that we're not recruiting or we're offering ages five to eighteen years old.
- 6:50But it seems like in camps of years past we usually get between the
- 6:56ages of five to fifteen years old, but it's offered to sixteen seventeen.
- 7:00How many years has this been going on. We've been doing this for about
- 7:02fifteen years now. Wow, let's turnout been like over the years. I
- 7:05mean, we usually get between twenty and twenty five children, okay, per
- 7:10day. And what exactly goes on there at the camp, I mean,
- 7:12what what do you do? We have a lot of events scheduled. We
- 7:15have team games that we are going to offer up. We have icebreaker games
- 7:20to play, we have relay races. We have grief educational type of things
- 7:27like memory boxes, so the children will actually have a memory box. It's
- 7:30it's a white photo box and they'll decorate it to capture the spirit and memory
- 7:34of their loved one and then they can put their artifacts in their sentimental value
- 7:40valuable things in this memory box. And we're going to do some arts and
- 7:43crafts. We have memory bracelets that children will be able to put together with
- 7:46their name of their loved one and wear it around their brace are around their
- 7:49risks. We're gonna have a wave bottle part of the arts and crafts event.
- 7:55We also are going to have a swimming event. Swimming is between one
- 8:00thirty and three thirty that afternoon, and we're gonna have some therapy dogs there.
- 8:03So a lot of interaction and that's our goal of this campus to have
- 8:07the children interact with each other so they can receive the pure support and pure
- 8:11validation that they're not alone on their grief. Sure, and that's what kind
- 8:13of wanted to want to get into next, Mike, and that is I
- 8:16would think it is just as an outsider looking in that when you have kids,
- 8:22young adults that are meeting people that have gone through the same thing.
- 8:28You know, I was someone who had that age. I don't recall losing
- 8:33anyone close to me, but I would think that if I did, or
- 8:35if you did, or whatever, that having someone because nobody, you mean,
- 8:39you may have that feeling that nobody understands what I'm going through right now.
- 8:43But when you meet your peers, somebody who's the same age as you,
- 8:46or same interest as you or whatever, and say, hey, you
- 8:48know I lost I lost my dad too, I lost my mom too,
- 8:50I would think that that would be a good thing to be able to interact
- 8:54with that person. A very powerful thing. Children being able to look at
- 8:58another of their age and say, you know, you're on the same journey
- 9:01I'm on, and yeah, you're getting through it and I'm going to get
- 9:05through it, and so we can do this together. But that puer validation
- 9:09and pure support is vital, and we offer that at the camp along with
- 9:13you know, positive interaction with adults, well trained grief counselors, and we
- 9:18just believe Dave that if you show people that you care, great things can
- 9:22happen. How do you go We've used the word recruiting, that's not the
- 9:26right word, but offer. But how do you go about offering? How
- 9:30are you going about getting the word out? I know you're doing this show,
- 9:31but what else are you doing? What other services or organizations do you
- 9:35work with so people would know about this well. Earlier on in the year,
- 9:39I sent out an email to the Canall County School Systems and Putnam County
- 9:41School Systems so that we are offering through the school systems when we're getting a
- 9:46lot of referrals that way, where we also have flowers that are circulating throughout
- 9:52the community. I did a TV show yesterday with Jim Strawn. It'll be
- 9:58on Sorry to hear that, I'm kidding Jim James my buddy, He'll be
- 10:01on the show tomorrow, but go ahead, he says, Hi, Yeah,
- 10:03he'll be here tomorrow. So that's gonna be on Channel seventeen, I
- 10:07believe, starting on Monday at eight thirty morning and eight thirty in the evening,
- 10:11so we are promoting it that way. So yeah, we're just circulating
- 10:15it through our Facebook page at hospice and through emails and through exposure like this.
- 10:20We appreciate the opportunity absolutely. Five duly presented in part by Travis Willard.
- 10:24You're Edward Jones Financial Advisor, just off the Day's Valley Act. To
- 10:26learn how Travis and the team can help you reach your financial goals is at
- 10:31Edward Jones dot com or called Travis Willard today three oh four, three nine,
- 10:33seven, fifty five and fifty three for You're Edward Jones, Financial Advisor,
- 10:37Travis Willard, Edward Jones Member SIPCC. Now there is a registration deadline
- 10:43though, because obviously anytime you're planning an event like this, Mike, you
- 10:46gotta you gotta get make sure that you got enough stuff to go around.
- 10:48So what is the registration deadline? Well, the registration deadline is really right
- 10:52up to that camp day July twenty first, Okay, that Friday, So
- 10:56we prefer to have everybody signed up July twentieth, that would be ideal.
- 11:00But the earlier the better. I was earlier the better, Yes, And
- 11:01we have about twenty children signed up right now, and so we probably have
- 11:07about ten more slots open, at least ten to twelve more slots, okay,
- 11:11And where can people learn more about them? They can call us at
- 11:13our hospice number three oh four seven six eight eight five two three and just
- 11:18ask for the brevement department and we can inform them about the camp registration,
- 11:22about the camp events. And go to our Facebook page at Hospicecare WV dot
- 11:30org how to text to the show here. I want to read this for
- 11:31you, Mike says, like you, Dave, My father was in hospice
- 11:35care. They were wonderful caregivers, not only to him but to us as
- 11:39well. My only regret is not calling them sooner. There are many support
- 11:43service that they provide addition to end of life care. Yeah, we touched
- 11:46on that earlier in the conversation. So the sooner though, we can get
- 11:48patients the better level of care that we can provide. And by offering again
- 11:54the holistic approach to care with our medical staff, our nursing staff, our
- 11:58social workers, counselor's chaps, cennas, and we get those services in,
- 12:03we can calm the situation down and provide a lot of emotional and spiritual and
- 12:07physical support for families. Had also another text of the show, does Hospitals
- 12:11Care offer other grief and lost services in the community. Yes, we do,
- 12:16We sure do. Every Tuesday, we have a support group that meets
- 12:18at ten thirty in the morning and that goes from ten thirty to twelve thirty
- 12:22every Tuesday. And then on every Thursday, we have a group that meets
- 12:26from six o'clock to eight o'clock. And then on every Friday, we have
- 12:30another support group that's targeting those folks that have lost individuals to a drug overdose
- 12:35or to alcohol addiction, and those are every Friday from twelve to two.
- 12:41Yeah, I would think you we'll wrap it up with this, Mike.
- 12:43I would think that, I mean, loss is lost. You know,
- 12:46whether you whether you lose someone or you're about to lose someone, as you
- 12:48said, through addiction or an auto accident or or just an illness, you
- 12:54know your loss is lost. But I would think that the grief process is
- 12:58different if it is a sudden loss or if it's something like what you consider.
- 13:05I know I'm totally butchery not using the right technology the right terminology here,
- 13:09but if you lose someone to cancer, which is about my father died
- 13:11of or something like, when it was not it was it was not unexpected.
- 13:16When he passed, we knew it was coming, as opposed to losing
- 13:20someone suddenly in some sort of an accident, overdose, or something to that
- 13:24effects. Yeah, before I answer that question, I would also want to
- 13:26reiterate that these support groups that we offer are not just for hospice families,
- 13:31there for the community as well. Okay, so I want to get that
- 13:33word out that this is offered to the community. Getting back to your question,
- 13:37Yeah, liking it too. When you know someone has cancer, for
- 13:43example, and the death is coming, you can see it coming. So
- 13:46it's like you see that person holding the baseball bat and he's coming at you,
- 13:50but you can see him from a distance. When someone dies, suddenly
- 13:52that baseball that person holding the baseball bat hits you from behind and you find
- 13:56yourself on the ground like wondering how did I get on the ground, reorienting
- 14:01yourself, and it's a quick blow that you just don't see coming. So
- 14:03there's a lot of confusion, a lot of feelings that come up, and
- 14:07just a lot of chaos within that grief process. Well, you've brought up
- 14:11some really good points here today. I'd like to have you back on the
- 14:13show at another point, you know, to talk about some other services that
- 14:16you offer. Mike du Pays, a director of a brievement and spiritual care
- 14:18services at Hospice Care. Again, give us all the details on the camp
- 14:24July twenty second at Camp High Tour again. That's off at North Poplar Fork
- 14:28MTA's Valley and then you turn right on Church Camp Road and follow it all
- 14:31the way out that I'll run you right into the camp. July twenty second
- 14:35is that date. The registration begins at eight o'clock to eight thirty. Please
- 14:39call three oh four seven six eight eight five two three and ask for the
- 14:43Brievement Department to register your child. Mike's been pleasure having you on the show

- 18:17this Regotta update is brought to you by Selango Law results matter called Selano Law,
- 18:22Charleston's personal injury law firm. Want to bring in Sean Hill from Kart
- 18:26Sean, good morning, how are you sir? And wearing Dave, Thanks
- 18:27for having me on, Thank you for being here. Over two hundred thousand
- 18:32people came into Charleston last year for regatta, and I would imagine Sean,
- 18:36it's very difficult getting everyone from place to place. Talk about krt's role in
- 18:41this exactly. So KRT is excited for the second year in a row to
- 18:44play a major role as far as facilitating the transportation. So when individuals come
- 18:48to Charleston, they say, well, how do I get to the actual
- 18:51event? Where do I park? And the Regatta Commission has done a fantastic
- 18:53job with planning out parking locations and Kart's proud to offer that shuttle service.
- 18:59And what we're doing actually is every thirty minutes starting tomorrow. So tomorrow we're
- 19:03gonna operate from eleven am to eleven pm, and then on the weekends we're
- 19:07gonna operate from nine am to eleven pm, and then again on Monday and
- 19:11Tuesday from eleven am to eleven pm. This shuttle service every thirty minutes,
- 19:15and we're running two different routes, and I'd love to tell you about it.
- 19:18Tell us about the routes. Sure, So we got two different options.
- 19:22So if you're coming in from the east end of Charleston, you can
- 19:25park your car at Lately you're gonna run down Quarrier Street. This year we
- 19:29made an adjustment. We're actually going to swing up Morris Street to Smith so
- 19:32that we can pick up individuals at the ballpark there. So if the Dirty
- 19:34Birds are playing all weekend long, I think they're the Charleston Wheelers from one
- 19:37night this weekend. Also, I want to find out Aten Douglas is going
- 19:41to be my next guest, so we'll find out for exactly. And so
- 19:42then that's gonna come down and drop folks off at the city Center where I
- 19:45know there are plenty of festivities going on. So that's the East End Option
- 19:49Park at Lateley Park, at the Ballpark. We'll get you downtown, we'll
- 19:52get you to the city Center, and then if you're coming from the west
- 19:55side of Charleston, or if you're coming from South Charleston, South Hills,
- 19:57etc. Offha Patrick's there. That Big Lots parking lot is where we're gonna
- 20:02stage cars. We're gonna pick them up there. We're gonna run down Canal
- 20:04Boulevard. We'll drop you off at Magic Island and then make our way to
- 20:07City Center and back and we're gonna run that again all through the weekend.
- 20:11It's a completely free shuttle and we're really excited to be a part. Well,
- 20:15and what did you learn from last year? Because you know, last
- 20:18year was the first time since O nine that Rigatta was back, and of
- 20:21course it's a totally different world between O nine and twenty twenty two, So
- 20:25what did you learn what were the things last year you said, Okay,
- 20:27we need to improve on this. This worked, this was stellar, This
- 20:32needs a little work, this totally didn't work. What would you take away
- 20:33from last year? Yeah, I think the main thing we took away again
- 20:37making that change that we're trying to get to more parking, So going up
- 20:41Morris to Smith and having access to that big lot there beside the ballpark is
- 20:45is huge for us and for the city. Obviously that that was a big
- 20:49change from the map, but otherwise, you know, if it's if it's
- 20:52not broke, don't fix it. And we had really positive feedback from individuals
- 20:56who had never been on a KRT bus and we were excited to get him
- 20:59on there because that's part of it. You vote for the safety level,
- 21:00you expect us to be there when we have these public events, and we're
- 21:03really proud that we're able to make it happen. And we were all guilty
- 21:07of this, and Sean, I know you are and I have been guilty
- 21:08of this as well. You know, everybody wants to be to do the
- 21:11things in the most convenient way to them, and they always want to you
- 21:15know, park right up front. But if you are planning on coming to
- 21:17the regarded this really is the best option. If you're coming to the concerts,
- 21:21or you get the kids with you, whatever, this is really the
- 21:22best option is to park away and get on the busy hop on the bus.
- 21:26You don't have to think about a thing. We'll get you there,
- 21:29we'll drop you off in all the major spots, and we'll get you back
- 21:30to your car safely. And I would imagine a lot of work goes into
- 21:34working out these these routes. I mean, again, we're talking about several
- 21:37hundred thousand people. That's what you had last year, probably going to be
- 21:41more this year, because if you know, you want the event to grow,
- 21:45and it's it's growing and it and I think it's surpassed what numbers wise,
- 21:49it surpassed what everybody thought it was going to do last year. So
- 21:53I would imagine I just have this image of you Gas sitting in the planning
- 21:56session. You know, you're like like you know, with the with the
- 22:00battle maps out and you know, the whole thing. I mean a lot
- 22:02goes into this bud. You know, it's it's it's more complicated than people
- 22:06may think. And we have backup plans, we have Hey, if the
- 22:07demand is incredible, then we bump it up as far as you know,
- 22:11instead of thirty minutes, maybe it's fifteen minutes. We've made those changes in
- 22:15the past depending on demand. So we're willing and ready and able to pull
- 22:19this off, and we're excited to see how it works. Our phone calls
- 22:22to five eighty live our service of Bigley Piggly Wiggily when shopping did your Bigley
- 22:26Pigglely Wiggily. We should have joined their loyalty program. You can say big
- 22:30at the gas pumps and throughout the store with their electronic coupons and free gifts
- 22:33on Fridays just for stopping by. For farming to table. Bigglely Piggily Wiggily,
- 22:37the best kept secret in Charleston. Texting services provided by Fruit Pharmacy,
- 22:40your hometown family Pharmacy. And we're talking with Sean Hill from KRT about transportation
- 22:45as it pertains to the regatta. Did you have a situation at all last
- 22:49year or maybe do you anticipate this year where the bus is full, I
- 22:53can't get anybody else on the bus gonna make up mean? Is that something?
- 22:56I guess it's a good problem to have, but exactly that it's a
- 22:59good problem to have. And that's where last year we made we made the
- 23:00call. We had started at thirty minute schedule and we quickly pivoted to every
- 23:04fifteen minute schedule. So, thankfully, I've got a fantastic team of operators
- 23:08who are just excited to be a part of this. So I've got a
- 23:11list of individuals where if if we run in that situation where we talk to
- 23:15our drivers and they say, hey, the buses are full, we need
- 23:17more vehicles. We need to pull this off. KRT is going to be
- 23:19there for the regatta. We're gonna make it happen. How many buses are
- 23:22you gonna be utilizing your nest They'll be round three to four buses. But
- 23:27again that can that can hop up depending on demand. Yeah, picture you
- 23:30on the phone out Gome, we need more buses. Bring the buses.
- 23:34How does it impact the other KR because you know you guys do you're and
- 23:37all this are still running your normal routes with Kart. How does that work?
- 23:41Exactly? So, thankfully, the city, even with the operations going
- 23:44on in the Regatta commission, what they have going on at the City Center
- 23:47station there on lately that doesn't impact our service dramatically at all. So thankfully
- 23:52we've again back to that great team of operators we have. We have people
- 23:55who step up on their days off who say, hey, I'll drive these
- 23:56buses, so our normal service will go on without a hitch. Any passengers
- 24:00who rely on Karot can still rely on us. We're gonna be there.
- 24:06And and then the individuals who want to ride on Karote for the first time
- 24:10for this shuttle, we're gonna be there for them also. Well, and
- 24:11I would think too that there may be people that don't have it, as
- 24:15you said at the top of the same with that have never written a KRT
- 24:18bus before, and this may be their first time on the bus and they
- 24:21get on they're like, well, this is pretty nice. I should do
- 24:22this on a regular basis exactly. So so back to that the question of
- 24:26the planning, their first impressions mean a lot. So our team that are
- 24:27cleaning the buses and making sure they're in, you know, in the best
- 24:30shape possible, they recognize that also, and we don't take that lightly.
- 24:34Got a text here for you. Text says Charleston Ghost Tours will be Happy.
- 24:38Tours started at the boulevards side of the Governor's mansion. Do you know
- 24:42where the best place to park for that would be? I mean, I
- 24:45know you're you're the bus guy, not necessarily the parking guy, but any
- 24:48input there, Yeah, I mean we're gonna be running up Elizabeth, so
- 24:52um, when we run up Elizabeth towards Lately and actually when we leave Lately
- 24:56and come down Elizabeth to meet Quarrier, I mean, that would be most
- 25:00likely the closest location there to hop on the bus. And as I said,
- 25:03if you're coming into Charleston today, I hit town about seven thirty usually
- 25:07every morning off sixty four, getting off on Virginia Street there and as I
- 25:11said, Sean, it's already starting to look like Regatta. You know,
- 25:14we get some streets closed, and what you can see with all the smoke,
- 25:17that's it's a there's magic in the air and smoke in the air.
- 25:21Went to to have to steal that. But over the next couple of days,
- 25:23you know, there are going to be road closures and I'll give them,
- 25:26you know, credit to the I think the City of Charleston and the
- 25:30uh the Regatta Facebook pages and things that nature have done a really good job
- 25:33of letting people know because you know, there's still people working in downtown Charleston.
- 25:37There's still people have to come and you know, and go to work.
- 25:40And Monday is going to be a weird day because with July fourth falling
- 25:44on a Tuesday, some people have the day off on Monday and some people
- 25:48don't. Some people will take you know, a annual leave day or whatever
- 25:52to take an extra little holiday. But there's still people working, so you
- 25:56got to kind of work around all that exactly. Uh, let me see,
- 26:00text says love KRT. Such a great public service. Fantastic. There
- 26:03you go, there you go. Where can people find the information about the
- 26:07I know, the regatta. As I said, their Facebook page and their
- 26:10website does a good job. But overall it shouldn't be too hard to find.
- 26:12If people need more information on the bus, yeah, it shouldn't be
- 26:15too tough. You can go on our Facebook page, or you can go
- 26:18to right on kart dot com. We'll have that schedule posted up there,
- 26:21right on the homepage, easy to click on, easy to see. And
- 26:22we're gonna go over those pickup points as we close out the segment here to
- 26:26capitos. But I want to switch gears totally for a moment, get away
- 26:29from Regatta for a moment. There was a meeting held yesterday with kart folks
- 26:33who want to understan Jeff Jenkins and I the newsroom. We're talking about a
- 26:36little bit earlier, and there is an app coming talk about this. Yeah,
- 26:40so we're really excited about this and careful not to overpromise there, yeah,
- 26:45to under deliver there because the timeline here is pretty spaced out. But
- 26:48we're really excited. We've been working so we have this shuttle that happens with
- 26:52the airport, so up at CRW whare individuals who come in late at night.
- 26:56They can take this shuttle to downtown hotels and historically they would call in
- 26:59to KRT and we would operate that way with our dispatch team. We've actually
- 27:03had an app now that we're really excited about. It's called Kart Plus,
- 27:07and it's going to allow individuals to download this app. They're going to request
- 27:10a ride, they're gonna pick the hotel they're going to downtown. It's going
- 27:12to take them down there and it can do the same thing in reverse.
- 27:15Essentially. Just think think rideshare. You look at the app, it's just
- 27:18like an uber or lift, but KRT background check, drug tested individuals are
- 27:23operating those vehicles. We're looking and again this is a soft launch of this
- 27:29product, but you think of scalability and what could this mean. We offer
- 27:33a pair of transit service that also is running behind the scenes on the same
- 27:36exact app. So when our pair of transit passengers want to get on historically
- 27:41they would call a day in advance and say hey, I need a ride.
- 27:44Well, now they're going to be able to get on here and use
- 27:47this app and schedule those rides. And you think long term, as we
- 27:49scale up with more vehicles and more employees to pull this off, what this
- 27:52can mean the Cana County is going to be This is the future. I
- 27:56mean apps are the future and it's happening everywhere else. I'm one that sometimes
- 28:00fights tooth and nail against technology, but this is one that you can't you
- 28:03can't fight no, this is this is one that needs to happen. This
- 28:06is one that's going to improve the service to every single citizen who votes for
- 28:10the safety levy. We're gonna get people door to door eventually. I'm not
- 28:15gonna put a date on it. It's gonna take some time to do it
- 28:17right, and we're not going to fail when we do this well. And
- 28:18sometimes you don't want to, like she said, you don't want to rush
- 28:21it. You know, let's make sure that you get it right. But
- 28:22this is, this is where it's going. That'll be a great service when
- 28:26it's when it's when it's up and running. A lot has gone into that,
- 28:27I'm sure too. Yes, it's it's it's our baby. We're really
- 28:32excited about this and we're gonna be very careful about how it rolls out.
- 28:33Well. We'll have you on again to talk about that as we get a
- 28:36little bit closer. When you're actually ready to you say, okay, we're
- 28:40full on here. All right, let's kind of recap Sean Hill again from
- 28:42kort Is with us. Let's recap the bus situation for regatta. Yep,
- 28:47so shuttles every thirty minutes. We'll pick you up at Lately, We'll pick
- 28:49you up the ballpark, we'll pick you up at Patrick Street, big lots.
- 28:52We're gonna run from eleven am to eleven pm on weekdays and from nine
- 28:56am to eleven pm week or on weekends. All right, we're excited to
- 28:59have and where's the what's the website again for karity or social media or whatever?

- 32:01Want to welcome in our good friend Eden Douglas from the Trump right on time.
- 32:07I'm here. It was kind of funny because I walked out and I
- 32:12was like, I told Sean from Karatia, said, tell Eden to come
- 32:15on in, and then I I got no. I got no, Eden,
- 32:19but you're here. I'm here, I'm here. I ran into him
- 32:21whenever I was walking in. Okay, I kind of just figured, all
- 32:23right, uh, let me before I get to you. I gotta take
- 32:27your care of some other business here. Uh. Somebody texted the show but
- 32:30Regatta said, is there any word on the air quality level from the smoke
- 32:32during regatta? Well, doing what I do. I texted our good friend,
- 32:37the captain of the whole regatta thing, Brian Hughes Meteorologies of Brian Hughes,
- 32:40and he said, the show must go on. So that's the only
- 32:44answer I have for you. Uh, it was pretty bad here in the
- 32:47Charleston area yesterday and this morning. I mean I was driving in from Tay's
- 32:51Valley between the smoke and the fog and everything this morning, he did not
- 32:53make for ideal driving conditions this morning. But so that's kind that's kind of
- 32:58where we are. So hopefully things will start to clear up. Just but
- 33:00can you do anything about the smoke? Even I cannot. But I was
- 33:04worried yesterday. I was, and I was worried this morning. But we're
- 33:07still playing baseball well. And and that's an interesting point because I and maybe
- 33:10I'm wrong about this, but I thought that there were and again I didn't
- 33:15just just kind of hit me, but I think there was at least one,
- 33:17maybe two Major League baseball games that were possibly postponed because of the smoke.
- 33:22I'm not sure we heard about that, but a few weeks ago we
- 33:24had two teams who had to cancel a series because of the smoke. So
- 33:29we we aren't in that situation just yet. But the I think it was
- 33:32Lancaster and Staaten Island had to cancel because of because of it, So I
- 33:37don't We're not there definitely, But okay, I haven't heard about the Major
- 33:40League ties but I would be surprised because what we're seeing here being in West
- 33:45Virginia is kind of crazy. And it is kind of weird because I was
- 33:47in southern West Virginia to Beckley area yesterday when I when I left here and
- 33:52down there wasn't wasn't nearly as bad. But man, here it's it is
- 33:57kind of bad. All right. So, how did we do last night?
- 33:58Had the dirty words do last night? We didn't win last night,
- 34:00but we are eight and two in our last ten games. Our team is
- 34:05stepping up. It's it's pretty exciting. Um, We've got some new guys
- 34:08on the roster and day it is like a completely three sixty. It really
- 34:13is. It is a complete three sixty from where we were at the beginning
- 34:15of the season. I started off a little slow, Yeah, it did.
- 34:19They the energies up. The guys are really molding together. It's it's
- 34:22just all coming full circle and it's it's pretty good baseball. As Billy said
- 34:27that, our guys are good. So what's going on tonight? And as
- 34:30we head into Regatta weekend? We got a big weekend. Um, tonight
- 34:34is dollar Beer night and it is our COPA night, so they'll be planning
- 34:37as the Bahara Susio state Charles, Okay, to hold on, back up,
- 34:40I want you to pronounce this because I saw it and you and I
- 34:44talked about it when I had you on prior to the season. And I'm
- 34:46doing good to get English out let alone, try to add you trying me
- 34:51to do Spanish. So explain what the name of the team is tonight,
- 34:53Pharo Sussios Stay Charleston, which is dirty birds in Spanish. Okay, Yeah,
- 34:59I'm gonna take your word for it. Okay. So how many times
- 35:01did you have to practice that? A lot? And I still sometimes mess
- 35:05it up, but I'm on the field, all right. So that's the
- 35:07new So what's the whole reason behind that? Changing it for one night?
- 35:10Um, we're doing it for five Thursdays this season. We're splitting it up
- 35:14between our Latin identity and the Charlie's. But we really wanted to It's never
- 35:19been done before in Charleston, so we wanted to highlight that Latin heritage.
- 35:23And um, I mean, honestly, these Latin players make baseball the game
- 35:27that it is, and they made it what it was. Yeah, I
- 35:30mean that's true. I mean, if you look at it. I don't
- 35:30know what the statistics are like for the Atlantic League, but if you look
- 35:34at Major League Baseball, the majority of players are same. It's the same
- 35:38in the Atlantic League. That's why I said this yesterday too. The first
- 35:42half of the season was so slow because we were waiting on our visa guys
- 35:45to get in. And it wasn't just us, it was like all of
- 35:49these all teams were like waiting, and you just saw like a huge increase
- 35:52in how the game was being played after all these guys got here. But
- 35:57we really just wanted to show appreciation to them and for the guys on our
- 36:00team, as well as people in Charleston and just overall in the game of
- 36:04baseball. So when people come out to the ballpark tonight, I mean,
- 36:07you know, you get the different name that had anything else special going on
- 36:09to night. I mean, I know, dollar Beer, anything related to
- 36:13the Yeah, so we're doing a pregatta party. Um, we're without or
- 36:17like tie in with the Dollar Beers, and we have fireworks tonight. So
- 36:21that is gonna be fun on a Thursday night. Dollar Beer Night. We
- 36:23have fireworks. So that's one thing we moved them to tonight. We will
- 36:28not have fireworks on Saturday because we pushed the game to four of five.
- 36:31So we're gonna do another Pregada party on Saturday with Dollar Beers, which is
- 36:36gonna be fun. Um. So if people can come in pre game with
- 36:38us and then head over to the Regatta for the weekend. And I just
- 36:42had Sean Hill from KRT on talking about the the transportation situation with the bus
- 36:46eat and everything, and they're gonna be picking people up from the ballpark.
- 36:50So I mean you walk literally like walk right out of the out of the
- 36:53ballpark and get on the bus and head and head down to Regattare you excited
- 36:55about Regatta? You're a You're a Charles Stoney and at least Charles Stoney from
- 37:00the area anyway from the general area, So I'm excited. So I didn't
- 37:04have a chance to go last year because you were busy. So we were
- 37:07so busy, we were in town and our games were a little later.
- 37:08So um. But this year, that one game on Saturday is at four
- 37:13or five, so I intend on heading down there after our game on Saturday.
- 37:15Well, and some great entertainment. I mean, you know you got
- 37:17flow Rider, uh, and you got Jody Messina and you got cool in
- 37:22the Gang. I think I can better than Ezra. I think I convinced
- 37:24our entire team to go on Saturday and Sunday to see flow riding cool in
- 37:29the Gang. So if you were there at the regatta, you will see
- 37:30dirty birds there well, and that's cool. And I mean, I know
- 37:34they want to take a shower and everything after the game, but I think
- 37:35if they come downtown based you know, we're in the we're in the gear,
- 37:37I think that'd be pretty cool. People automatically know who they are.
- 37:40Yeah, we're excited, um, but we're also excited because we have fun
- 37:44things and we're trying to tie it in to allow people to have a chance
- 37:46to come to our game and then go downtown to spend time at the regatta.
- 37:51So we hope they come with us, and we hope they go to
- 37:53the regatta too. What else you got going on throughout the weekend? Um?
- 37:57Friday night, we have a giveaway. It's a military replica T shirt
- 38:00giveaway that fans can wear on our game on Monday, which is our Independence
- 38:05Day celebration. Saturday, we were playing as the Charleston Wheelers, which is
- 38:08going to be really fun to tie in with the regatta as well and the
- 38:13Dollar Beers and then heavy games Sunday, and then Monday is our Salute to
- 38:16Service Night and Independence Day celebration with super Mega Blast fireworks. Well it's kind
- 38:22of cool because you know, it's fifty fifties to whether you'll be home or
- 38:24away while this is going on, and all the other teams in the league
- 38:28they have things going on in their respective towns, you know, in relation
- 38:30to the Fourth of July as well. But to be able to have all
- 38:34these activities, you know, going on and while at the same time that
- 38:37regatta is going on pretty good stuff. It's I mean, it's interesting.
- 38:40We saw it last year like people were coming to us first and then they
- 38:44were heading over to the regatta. And we only want that to keep happening
- 38:46or they stay with us because it's still a fun environment. You need a
- 38:51break from the regatta, come to come our ballparks. So we're really pushing
- 38:54for people to come. We got a lot of fun things planning to giveaway
- 38:58fireworks, the Wheels, Dollar Beers. There's so much going on. Now
- 39:02do you frequently play as the Wheelers? I know you do. The Charlie's
- 39:06thing. But have you done the Wheelers before? We have not done the
- 39:07Wheelers. This is on one night only, Okay, all right. We
- 39:09tried to do a Wheelers night. Um it was inter last year the year
- 39:13before, but we didn't wear jerseys. So this year we ordered the original
- 39:17Wheelers jersey and that was and if that was like an early early to midnighties
- 39:22thing, I think. And I know if Rod Blacks I was listening,
- 39:24he's in a text meet. He's gonna tell me I got that wrong.
- 39:25But but I remember the Wheelers very very well. Matter of fact, I
- 39:30had a good friend from my hometown that actually played for the for the Wheelers
- 39:34for a while before they shipped him off, you know, somewhere else,
- 39:37and he was one step away from the major leagues. But that whole shoulder
- 39:39thing, man, I just got him. But that's gonna be kind of
- 39:42cool. Now. Will you have Wheelers merchandise for sale? We will not,
- 39:45So we're doing it so you may be looking at in the future.
- 39:47Uh maybe we're trying to keep it and really build the dirty Birds Burland.
- 39:53These these jerseys will be available for auction, So there are Game one jerseys
- 39:58the player will sign it and then you can and try to bid on them
- 40:00and on our live source app. They so they will be available for auction
- 40:05after the game and through next week. Well, talk about the about the
- 40:08salute to the military that you're doing, because I mean, no other state
- 40:13other than West Virginia. West Virginia has had more people per capita give their
- 40:17life for this country into military than any other state in the Union. And
- 40:21it's not even close from what I understand, So I know that's an very
- 40:23important part of what of what the dirty words do. Yeah, one one
- 40:28day, it is our Fourth of July celebration, but we're calling it Salute
- 40:30to Service Night. We'll do a recognition for the military in game where everyone
- 40:36will stand depending on what branch they were in, called the branches, and
- 40:39they'll stand, which is one of my favorite things to see people in the
- 40:43stands and like have them sin I feel disrespectful sitting when they're standing, because
- 40:47I want to like to show them that we appreciate them a lot. And
- 40:52all military members and retired and active we'll get in for free. They just
- 40:55have to get a ticket from the box office if they prison their badge or
- 40:59whatever they have, and then we'll celebrate the fourth of July, celebrate our
- 41:05freedom with super mega blast fireworks, recognize the military. I mean, it's
- 41:08it's gonna be fun. Talk with Eatan Douglas from the Dirty Birds here on
- 41:13the five eighty Live. Of course, your tickets, dirty Birds gear,
- 41:15schedules, promotions. We always say just good to a Dirty Birds baseball dot
- 41:20Com And I'm guessing now we're nearing the halfway point of the season. How
- 41:22the home crowd has been so far really good? Um, obviously your typical
- 41:28midweek games are a little slow, but Thursday through Saturday and even Sundays now
- 41:32we're like, are really picking up just because it's a good place to get
- 41:36out of the house, go somewhere like cheap and have fun. I mean
- 41:40really, we want it price to where it's reasonable for every family, and
- 41:44that's that's what we've done. And we've seen an increase in attendance this year,
- 41:47especially on Thursday nights and on Saturdays. I mean we were I don't
- 41:52want to say sold out, but we were sold out two weeks ago on
- 41:55a Saturday because of the fireworks and just everything we have going on. So
- 42:00it's definitely fun. People are showing out, especially on our social media.
- 42:04We can see that people are supporting us, and it's it's it's cool to
- 42:07see for me, because that's what we're trying to do, is just build
- 42:09the brand and tell everyone please come. It's fun. We want you to
- 42:14have fun and we want to help you and get you out of the house
- 42:15and everything. How has it worked out with the cash lest system that you
- 42:20guys announced earlier this season, because I know it was a little bit of
- 42:22a little bit of pushback on this show. Old people like me, you
- 42:24know, had had a little bit of a problem with it. But how's
- 42:28how's it worked out so far? There have been no issues. Um,
- 42:30obviously, you know, people have their opinions and things. But on our
- 42:34end, we have had no issues because we've got those cash cards where you
- 42:37can exchange your cash for a card. It's like a gift card. Um,
- 42:40you know. Our bit new business manager Ben Blum, he can't say
- 42:45enough about him. He's absolutely amazing and he has really stepped up and is
- 42:47making everything work and it's really good. Good, all right, eaton.
- 42:52It's always a pleasure to have you on the show. We'll be seeing you
- 42:53at the ballpark now again. Let's recap. Let's take us like tonight through

- 47:54Not got a couple of texts here. Text says too bad in the front
- 47:57office. Once the Dirty Bird's name, the Wheelers name and logo seems much
- 48:01more representative of Charleston. Um. You know, it's kind of interesting because
- 48:06what happens is is sometimes when there's a big splash made about things. And
- 48:08I remember, you know, the middle of the season when the Dirty Birds
- 48:12changed their name, um, you know, from From the Power to the
- 48:15Dirty Birds, And it was all the rage, and people called the show
- 48:19and I talked about it, and they text the show and so on and
- 48:21so forth. Somehow we managed to get over it. Uh. And now
- 48:24and and I understand and talking ed and I thought, you know, I
- 48:28was wondering if they were going to do any kind of a m any kind
- 48:31of sales or promotions with the with the Wheelers merchandise when he plays the Wheelers
- 48:36over the weekend. But they're really trying to push that Dirty Bird's logo out
- 48:38there and the name. And I know, not everybody likes it. Not
- 48:42everybody likes any nickname. Uh. And I get that, especially change.
- 48:45We're not big on change, especially us old people here meaning me, not
- 48:50big on change sometimes. But you know, it's been a it's been a
- 48:52success. And the merchandising is selling, and sometimes it's not just about selling
- 48:57to your hometown. It's about selling to the world online and so on and
- 49:01so forth. And the dirty Bird's logo is really taken off. And you
- 49:06know, that's kind of the future of minor league baseball is having I don't
- 49:09want to see outrageous names, but having different names other than just the Tigers
- 49:14and you know, the lions and other animals and so on and so forth.
- 49:16So is what is. I had a text to the show. Somebody
- 49:20asked about the air quality level as it in Regatta. So I text Brian
- 49:23Hughes Meteorology just Captain Brian Hughes and ask him about it, and he texts
- 49:30me back. Of course, I said the show must go on. But
- 49:31he also said the rain tonight and tomorrow will get rid of the smoke.
- 49:37So saith Meteorologies. If Brian Hughes the smoke is a thing of the past
- 49:40after the rains we have tonight and tomorrow according to meteorology, just Captain commodore
- 49:45Brian Hughes. Five Ofty Lives brought to you in part by Valley Outdoors Just

- 50:15Kanon County Prosecutor Chuck Miller said yesterday he feels that his office made the right
- 50:21decision to have the office his office removed from this lewd behavior allegation against Canon
- 50:29County Commission President Kent Carper. You'll you'll recall that Miller asked a circuit judge
- 50:35to remove his office from the case and to have a special prosecutor named.
- 50:38The judge said okay to that, and the Logan County Prosecutor David Wandling was
- 50:43appointed as a special prosecutor. Wandling then asking the state police to take over
- 50:50the investigation that was following the public release of the emails which we talked about
- 50:53that allegedly sent by Kent Carper after a police were called to Daniel Boone Park.
- 50:59Going back to the middle of Wandling is upset that the Kanaw County Commission
- 51:06or their reps his words, released information that, he says Wandling is information
- 51:12that was not made available to his office. Wandling told the Charleston Get Mail
- 51:17that on Friday. Going back to Judge Miller, he says it would be
- 51:21improper for his office to handle the case since the commission is who works with
- 51:27the office closely on budgets and whatnot. Prosecutor I should say, not judge
- 51:30prosecutors and whatnot. That saga will continue again. Jeff Jenkins with the story
