- 0:00Speaker 3: I'm not a journalist.
- 0:01Speaker 1: I'm a lead singer in a rock band, but I'm
- 0:04Speaker 1: big fan and I just would just start talking.
- 0:07Speaker 3: I heard you guys are coming.
- 0:08Speaker 1: You guys are going to be over here September twenty fourth,
- 0:11Speaker 1: kicking off a tour with Rose Tattoo, which is just
- 0:14Speaker 1: absolutely massive.
- 0:17Speaker 3: What are your thoughts on that?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Oh, just like you said, it's it's going to be
- 0:22Speaker 2: very cool. You know they have They're a very historical
- 0:26Speaker 2: act and just a pleasure to be aligned with them,
- 0:30Speaker 2: and especially in Australia, you know, so it's like home
- 0:35Speaker 2: term with them.
- 0:36Speaker 1: It's like a ac DC Roase Tattoo. We're here, we're
- 0:41Speaker 1: playing with an ac DC tribute band, and so we
- 0:45Speaker 1: got to see those ac DC fans. Just like the
- 0:47Speaker 1: hardest working band out there. And Rose Tattoos, I think,
- 0:51Speaker 1: as of right now, is one of the hottest bands,
- 0:54Speaker 1: you know, I don't know, like a resurgence in awesome
- 0:58Speaker 1: rock and roll music. So the fact that you are
- 1:00Speaker 1: on tour with them, I think is like the.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Coolest thing ever.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think as far as a concertgoer is concerned,
- 1:06Speaker 2: you know, over there it's going to be you know,
- 1:09Speaker 2: a fun event. So I think everybody should should get
- 1:12Speaker 2: there and it's gonna be crazyzy and.
- 1:14Speaker 1: You guys are you guys just released Volume ten, the
- 1:18Speaker 1: new record, and I checked out all the videos a.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Good time, just like it's really cool.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And I was thinking, like, man, what am I going
- 1:26Speaker 1: to ask Josh Todd like lead singer to lead singer
- 1:29Speaker 1: like you you're ahead of me by ten to fifteen years,
- 1:33Speaker 1: but that means I came up and in like ninety nine,
- 1:37Speaker 1: I was listening to music and one lit up came out.
- 1:41Speaker 1: There was no cool music, There was no cool music.
- 1:43Speaker 1: You guys were like the only ones, like the purveyors
- 1:46Speaker 1: of a great rock and roll your great lead singer,
- 1:49Speaker 1: great guitars. And I thought, like it just took me
- 1:52Speaker 1: back to like while I was standing at a school
- 1:54Speaker 1: dance wearing a kiss T shirt, thinking, man, what are
- 1:56Speaker 1: they going to play some cool music?
- 1:58Speaker 3: And your songs come on?
- 1:59Speaker 1: So I think it's like, I think it's the most
- 2:03Speaker 1: amazing thing that you guys are just a rock and
- 2:05Speaker 1: roll band and you just stuck to your guns over
- 2:07Speaker 1: this many years.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Thanks, that's been that has worked for us sometimes
- 2:15Speaker 2: and sometimes it's worked against us. But for sure, you
- 2:18Speaker 2: know we came out when it was you know, rap
- 2:21Speaker 2: rock and what I call like what I call like
- 2:24Speaker 2: shoegazer rock, where it was like dudes with buddy Holly
- 2:26Speaker 2: glasses on looking down at their shoes, and here we
- 2:30Speaker 2: come out and there was nothing like us. And it's
- 2:33Speaker 2: funny because we were just a four on the floor
- 2:35Speaker 2: rock and roll band, you know, but like there was
- 2:38Speaker 2: nobody like us at that time, you know, and still
- 2:40Speaker 2: to this day. You know, we've been out on our
- 2:42Speaker 2: own little island and we continue to just do our
- 2:47Speaker 2: thing and we created you know, we really based our
- 2:50Speaker 2: reputation on our live show and toured a lot, and
- 2:55Speaker 2: because of that, we have this great audience and we're
- 2:58Speaker 2: having this very six assful, quiet career for twenty five
- 3:02Speaker 2: years now.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah, you guys, it's like the most respect of band
- 3:06Speaker 3: got a band. Guy. You guys just toured your asses
- 3:08Speaker 3: off and like never stopped.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And we're we're in the middle of a month long
- 3:13Speaker 1: tour right now, and you know, I know how difficult
- 3:16Speaker 1: it is.
- 3:16Speaker 3: It sucks like you miss home, but there's something like
- 3:19Speaker 3: show day and you're like all those thoughts go out
- 3:22Speaker 3: of your mind and you're like, we got to go.
- 3:23Speaker 3: We got a job to do. We got to kick
- 3:24Speaker 3: some ass, and this got to do.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And I think you guys are like just it never stopped,
- 3:30Speaker 1: like you just kept going and you kept touring and
- 3:32Speaker 1: even when you had the break, but you came back
- 3:34Speaker 1: and it just like it was the working rock and
- 3:37Speaker 1: roll band, the way it's supposed to be done.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Yes, and still to this day, you know, we're still working,
- 3:44Speaker 2: uh in that way, you know. And and like you said,
- 3:47Speaker 2: you know it really it really forces you to live
- 3:50Speaker 2: in the moment, you know, because if you get too
- 3:52Speaker 2: caught up and how much time you're you're not you're
- 3:56Speaker 2: not at home, and you know, friends fall by the wayside,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and you have no home life and you have this
- 4:02Speaker 2: really strange existence that nobody really understands unless they do
- 4:06Speaker 2: it too. You know, you have to just kind of
- 4:10Speaker 2: cut yourself off from that and just live in the
- 4:11Speaker 2: moment and then, you know, and really soak up those
- 4:15Speaker 2: times on stage, you know, because that makes up for
- 4:17Speaker 2: the whole fucking rest of the day. You know.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, it's like the weird tour bubble you get
- 4:23Speaker 1: into where it's like the world ceases to exist and
- 4:26Speaker 1: all you've got is you're close to your band and
- 4:29Speaker 1: the band and nothing else really matters.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, because of it, it does eat
- 4:36Speaker 2: people alive, you know, I've seen, I've seen it get
- 4:39Speaker 2: the best of crew guys and band guys and everybody.
- 4:43Speaker 2: You have to be very, very careful.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Absolutely, And I myself have been sober for fifteen almost
- 4:51Speaker 1: sixteen years, and that's awesome. I know you're you're a
- 4:54Speaker 1: sober lead singer too, And yeah, you've talked a lot
- 4:57Speaker 1: about it. I've saw a bunch of interviews. But I
- 5:00Speaker 1: guess my question for you is being sober?
- 5:04Speaker 3: What is it?
- 5:05Speaker 1: I know what it's like to me, Like the creative process,
- 5:08Speaker 1: like it's almost even better. There's two things I equate
- 5:10Speaker 1: to it, Like I feel like I'm so much better
- 5:14Speaker 1: a frame of mind, clear headed, you know, Yes, I
- 5:17Speaker 1: can think and I can work, and I can do
- 5:19Speaker 1: the things that I need to do without being boughted
- 5:21Speaker 1: down by the demons the addictions.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yep, yes, hands down, being sober across the board, everything
- 5:31Speaker 2: is so much better, you know. You know, and that's
- 5:35Speaker 2: the bullshit that you know, addicts tell themselves, Oh, I
- 5:38Speaker 2: can only be creative if I'm so fucked up, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 2: doing X, Y, and Z and it's all bullshit, you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: like you get more accomplished. I've been sober almost thirty years.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Thirty years and November, thank you. And you know, like
- 5:55Speaker 2: I just now that I've had so much time away
- 5:58Speaker 2: from drinking and using, I just sometimes I have regret
- 6:02Speaker 2: on how much time I gave it, you know, because
- 6:06Speaker 2: I just felt like, wow, you know, I wasted so
- 6:10Speaker 2: much of my young life. Where your bulletproof, where you are,
- 6:14Speaker 2: you're you're at the top of your game, You're the
- 6:16Speaker 2: best you're ever going to be. Your body, your mind,
- 6:19Speaker 2: your you know what I mean, your instincts, your voice, everything,
- 6:23Speaker 2: you know. And I was dedicating so much of my
- 6:26Speaker 2: time to drinking and using, which I wish I wouldn't have,
- 6:29Speaker 2: but I had to do what I had to do
- 6:30Speaker 2: to get where I am today, and I got to
- 6:32Speaker 2: just stay in the moment. But yes, for sure, without it,
- 6:36Speaker 2: I hands down I'm more creative. I get more done. Yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 2: it's it's my greatest my greatest asset, my sobriety. Without it,
- 6:44Speaker 2: I have nothing.
- 6:45Speaker 1: It's like that it happened for a reason, and it
- 6:49Speaker 1: happens to get me to this point to where I
- 6:52Speaker 1: need to be to do, you know.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Like I couldn't have done it.
- 6:55Speaker 1: It's still using the other, my other thing that I
- 6:58Speaker 1: always think about and especially into like we have a
- 7:01Speaker 1: show later tonight. But I see like other bands and
- 7:03Speaker 1: they'll be sitting at the bar drinking, having a good time,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and I'm like, yeah, yeah, go ahead, I'm gonna come
- 7:09Speaker 1: out there and fucking destroy you every single night no
- 7:12Speaker 1: matter what.
- 7:13Speaker 3: You know, Like I can see it, and I'm like,
- 7:15Speaker 3: don't even fucking work about it.
- 7:18Speaker 2: That's good. That's a good mentality to have.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Keep that, you know, Yeah, absolutely so, I got sure
- 7:24Speaker 1: tons of stuff, just like a million questions.
- 7:28Speaker 3: You know.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Uh, I'm I'm gonna talk to me about There's something
- 7:34Speaker 1: about Buck Cherry and those songs that you wrote that
- 7:36Speaker 1: are so unbelievably catchy and so unbelievably relatable. I'm a
- 7:41Speaker 1: strip club DJ back in Nebraska, so I play I'm
- 7:45Speaker 1: telling you Crazy Bitch comes on every single night, and
- 7:48Speaker 1: I think it's one.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Of the greatest gus.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Ever because it crosses not only like it's a great song,
- 7:54Speaker 1: but black people, white people, old people, young people, girls, boys.
- 7:58Speaker 1: If I know that I need to push the party
- 8:00Speaker 1: over the top, I hit, crazy, Bitch, and it's like
- 8:02Speaker 1: it's like a light strikes the club. Talk to me
- 8:05Speaker 1: a little bit about that and what it's like being
- 8:08Speaker 1: writing songs like that.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Yeah, if first and foremost, I'm I'm a fan of
- 8:15Speaker 2: music and songs and I like everything, you know. And
- 8:17Speaker 2: I grew up in Orange County, California, and at that time,
- 8:20Speaker 2: you know, I was surfing and skateboarding and you know,
- 8:23Speaker 2: listening to a lot of independent records. Before I got
- 8:26Speaker 2: into like major label rock records, I was listening to
- 8:29Speaker 2: all punk rock records, you know. Like So anyways, at
- 8:33Speaker 2: one point, you know, n WA drops straight out of Compton,
- 8:37Speaker 2: you know, and for for little skate kids in Orange County,
- 8:41Speaker 2: we were like, this shit is fucking amazing.
- 8:44Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Everybody loved these records, BC Boys and NWA, and so
- 8:49Speaker 2: I started getting into rap music back then and always
- 8:53Speaker 2: a fan of hip hop. So anyways, cut too, crazy, bitch.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I'm driving around in my car and in LA you know,
- 9:00Speaker 2: in between working and stuff, and I just started singing.
- 9:05Speaker 2: You know. You know, Kim Kardashian had just put out
- 9:08Speaker 2: a sex tape. This is right at the beginning of
- 9:11Speaker 2: before Kim Kardashian is who she is, and Paris Hilton
- 9:14Speaker 2: had dropped a sex tape, and I just started thinking, God,
- 9:17Speaker 2: it's amazing, how like somebody can launch their entertainment career
- 9:21Speaker 2: off like a homemade porn you know, like you know
- 9:23Speaker 2: what I mean, it's basically what it was. So then
- 9:26Speaker 2: I started thinking about all the crazy girls I was
- 9:28Speaker 2: with when I was in high school, and I started
- 9:31Speaker 2: singing this song, you know, this chorus, and I didn't
- 9:35Speaker 2: want to forget it, so I sang it on my
- 9:37Speaker 2: mom's answering machine. I had no cell phone or like
- 9:39Speaker 2: recording device at the time. My mom and I were tight,
- 9:42Speaker 2: you know, I said, Mom, I don't want to forget this.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I sang it down. And then when I approached Keith
- 9:46Speaker 2: with it, I said, hey, I want this to be
- 9:49Speaker 2: a rock song, but I wanted to sound like a
- 9:51Speaker 2: hip hop groove. I want it to be very simple,
- 9:55Speaker 2: you know, very simple, you know, don't overthink it, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: like two parts and you know that's it, you know.
- 10:01Speaker 2: And and so he delivered some music that was great,
- 10:05Speaker 2: and and we put it together and then it just
- 10:08Speaker 2: sat sat around for three years before I was on
- 10:11Speaker 2: a record. Yeah. Yeah, So it's just so weird how
- 10:16Speaker 2: that song is like now it's had this this life,
- 10:20Speaker 2: you know, this lifespan that's incredible. It's like, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 2: people are still talking about that song, and you know,
- 10:28Speaker 2: we just thought it was going to be a really
- 10:29Speaker 2: great fan song, you know, like because it because of
- 10:33Speaker 2: the lyrical content, it would never get on the radio.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And then it turned out to be our biggest hit,
- 10:37Speaker 2: you know, and.
- 10:38Speaker 1: We play our band it's called The Midnight Devils. Were
- 10:41Speaker 1: like a glam rock band, but it's like hyper glam,
- 10:46Speaker 1: like very very reminiscent of California of La. But like
- 10:50Speaker 1: on Push Push to eleven, you kind of grew up
- 10:54Speaker 1: your first band. I know you've talked a ton about it,
- 10:57Speaker 1: but tell me, I guess the part that intrigues me
- 11:00Speaker 1: the most is La the sunset Strip. You were like
- 11:05Speaker 1: what it was like in the early nineties out there,
- 11:08Speaker 1: Like because we've been out there with Whiskey and it's
- 11:11Speaker 1: fucking cool.
- 11:12Speaker 3: It's great, but it wasn't like it was you know,
- 11:15Speaker 3: so we're done. Yeah, Okay, we'd played the whiskey. We
- 11:17Speaker 3: don't need to do it anymore. Yeah.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm so fortunate that I got to experience the
- 11:24Speaker 2: madness that it was the Sunset Strip at that time.
- 11:27Speaker 2: We caught it right about a year before it died,
- 11:31Speaker 2: right and so it was crazy.
- 11:34Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I was in a band called slam Hound. I was nineteen.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I moved to Hollywood. I lived right above the Whiskey
- 11:40Speaker 2: on Clark Street in an apartment, and I would take
- 11:44Speaker 2: acid and I would climb up on the roof of
- 11:47Speaker 2: the whiskey and I would just sit there and kind
- 11:51Speaker 2: of like, you know, dream about like I was tripping out,
- 11:55Speaker 2: but I would like just think about, like I just
- 11:58Speaker 2: want to conquer this fucking city. I want to be
- 11:59Speaker 2: the big is, you know, like in my head, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 2: and I want to do it fast, you know. And
- 12:05Speaker 2: so I'm a hard ass worker, even when I was
- 12:08Speaker 2: fucked up, you know. So we were. We were on
- 12:11Speaker 2: the cover of Rock City News six months after we
- 12:14Speaker 2: put together Slamhound. We really worked our ass off, and
- 12:18Speaker 2: you know, we were very close to getting signed to
- 12:20Speaker 2: Atlantic at one point, and then we got stuffled around,
- 12:23Speaker 2: And thank god, because it was really a blessing in disguise,
- 12:26Speaker 2: because we were all very fucked up. It was hell
- 12:29Speaker 2: on wheels. If we would have got any money or
- 12:32Speaker 2: any kind of notoriety in the in the you know,
- 12:35Speaker 2: commercial notoriety. I think we would have been dead by now,
- 12:37Speaker 2: you know, So maybe it was a blessed blessing in disguise.
- 12:40Speaker 2: But I really loved that band. We were together for
- 12:43Speaker 2: five years.
- 12:44Speaker 1: It was kind of a cool time because it was
- 12:45Speaker 1: like after Guns n' Roses, but before like Runge it hit.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And it's just there's that really cool style of music
- 12:54Speaker 1: that was like the early nineties glam that would like, yeah, it.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Never happened, and it only in l A and never
- 13:00Speaker 3: happened anymore.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, I was never in like glam bands.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I came from Orange County, California. I was, you know,
- 13:06Speaker 2: in like just punk rock bands. And so when I
- 13:08Speaker 2: got up to LA, I met these dudes and they
- 13:11Speaker 2: were all into that, but they were like, they had
- 13:13Speaker 2: this punk rock thing going on. So it was a
- 13:16Speaker 2: good it was a good mesh of personalities, you know.
- 13:20Speaker 2: And and that's what was really unique about that band.
- 13:23Speaker 2: But you know, when we would go out flying, you know,
- 13:26Speaker 2: you'd go out on the strip and you couldn't even
- 13:27Speaker 2: see the sidewalk. There were so many band flyers, yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 2: you know, from bands out there promoting for their shows
- 13:34Speaker 2: and it was insane. It was like the Whiskey, the
- 13:38Speaker 2: the Roxy and Gazaris at that time was going on.
- 13:43Speaker 2: You know, Gazari's is long gone, but it was that
- 13:46Speaker 2: and they were packed with bands every fucking night and
- 13:49Speaker 2: it was nuts, you know.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And it's it's like, not like that anymore and it
- 13:53Speaker 1: never will be this weird time in the place. But
- 13:57Speaker 1: speaking like that, punk rock rout never listening to your
- 14:00Speaker 1: record last night, I had the earbuds in and I'm like,
- 14:03Speaker 1: you know, listening kind of writing some stuff.
- 14:05Speaker 3: We're stuck in like a hotel in.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Melbourne, you know, and I'm just kind of righting and
- 14:09Speaker 1: you're one of the songs. Come on, I'm like, holy shit,
- 14:11Speaker 1: this is a punk rock song. This is fucking great.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Like you still kind of harken back to those punk
- 14:18Speaker 1: rock roots. And me and are my drummer, we grew
- 14:20Speaker 1: up in punk rock bands, you know, touring in a band,
- 14:23Speaker 1: in a shitty band when you're eighteen, leaving home and
- 14:26Speaker 1: you just did it.
- 14:27Speaker 3: And we've been doing it for twenty.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Years, you know, but you guys still putting out songs
- 14:32Speaker 1: and kind of showing that side of your U. I
- 14:35Speaker 1: guess your evolution that we still grew up on punk
- 14:38Speaker 1: rock music.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. And the great thing about those punk rock
- 14:43Speaker 2: bands that I grew up with, they had really great,
- 14:46Speaker 2: memorable chanting choruses, you know, because that's the only way
- 14:51Speaker 2: they were going to get people at their shows because
- 14:53Speaker 2: they didn't they didn't have a major label putting you know,
- 14:56Speaker 2: putting them on the radio or anything like that. So
- 14:58Speaker 2: they had to have a record that was full of
- 15:00Speaker 2: of catchy songs so that you know, fans that come
- 15:03Speaker 2: to the shows and sing along and slam dance and
- 15:06Speaker 2: do all that stuff. You know. So that's kind of
- 15:08Speaker 2: where I got my songwriting, you know, chops, because like
- 15:13Speaker 2: if you listen above Cherry songs, I always want to
- 15:16Speaker 2: write songs that people can remember, you know what I mean.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Like it's it's not about it's not about rock radio anymore,
- 15:23Speaker 2: you know, and it's gone back to like in the
- 15:25Speaker 2: independent days, you know. So, and I feel I feel
- 15:29Speaker 2: for all these baby bands coming up because you know,
- 15:32Speaker 2: they got it hard because now information is just spread,
- 15:36Speaker 2: you know, it's just spread wide, and you can't get
- 15:40Speaker 2: anybody to pay attention to you. You got like you got
- 15:42Speaker 2: like five seconds to get people's attention. That's it. That's
- 15:46Speaker 2: how much time you have now, you know. So it's
- 15:49Speaker 2: very tough to build a fan base and to get
- 15:51Speaker 2: all that you have to you have to be very unique.
- 15:54Speaker 2: You got to write really good songs. You got to
- 15:56Speaker 2: have something that's real that people latch onto, you know,
- 16:01Speaker 2: that gets popular and then you know, then you start
- 16:03Speaker 2: building you know, your empire.
- 16:05Speaker 1: And we just put out So we put out a
- 16:07Speaker 1: record on July fifth, and we started our Australian tour
- 16:11Speaker 1: on the fifth, so we didn't have a lot of
- 16:12Speaker 1: time to build up.
- 16:13Speaker 3: And I'm thinking to myself, like.
- 16:15Speaker 1: But to what you were saying, it's like we didn't
- 16:18Speaker 1: have time to do press or promo or anything like that.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And I'm like, in this day and age, does it
- 16:23Speaker 1: really matter?
- 16:24Speaker 3: Like the where it.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Comes the meat and potatoes is in those live shows,
- 16:28Speaker 1: I feel, and in your touring and capturing you know,
- 16:32Speaker 1: it's like you got to have those songs that fans
- 16:34Speaker 1: like are going to go I need that.
- 16:36Speaker 3: I want that in my life, Like those.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Are the yeah, you know, now, content is really important.
- 16:42Speaker 3: You know.
- 16:42Speaker 2: It's like like this and somebody will find this and
- 16:46Speaker 2: they'll be like this is cool. I didn't know he
- 16:48Speaker 2: I didn't know he did this. I don't know. I
- 16:49Speaker 2: didn't know he was like this, you know, and people
- 16:52Speaker 2: like to find that and then they get into this
- 16:54Speaker 2: and then they go check out some song you know
- 16:57Speaker 2: that they didn't know about our some record, you know
- 16:59Speaker 2: what I mean. So you need content. You need to like,
- 17:02Speaker 2: you need to make videos, low budget videos, and have
- 17:05Speaker 2: a lot of content on YouTube, and you know, build
- 17:07Speaker 2: your social media's and you need to do all that
- 17:09Speaker 2: kind of stuff and put a lot of time and
- 17:12Speaker 2: effort into that and find a good social media person.
- 17:15Speaker 2: That's where you need to put the marketing dollars if
- 17:17Speaker 2: you have them, you know what I mean, not not
- 17:20Speaker 2: like spending you know, fifty grand on a you know,
- 17:23Speaker 2: a radio campaign to push to rock radio that doesn't exist,
- 17:27Speaker 2: you know what I mean. So and streaming, for sure,
- 17:31Speaker 2: you know, that's how a lot of you know, playlists
- 17:33Speaker 2: and all that. That's how a lot of new like
- 17:35Speaker 2: we have now, our demographic at Bulk Cherry shows is
- 17:39Speaker 2: sixteen to sixty five. You know, it's insane. We have
- 17:42Speaker 2: we have people coming to our shows and we're like,
- 17:44Speaker 2: they're so young, and we're like, how did you find
- 17:46Speaker 2: out about Bulk Cherry you on a playlist. I loved
- 17:49Speaker 2: you guys, and then I started, you know, you know,
- 17:52Speaker 2: searching more and I found out you guys have all
- 17:54Speaker 2: these records, and then we just started listening and we
- 17:56Speaker 2: became huge fans. And then they come to the show,
- 17:58Speaker 2: and then they come to the show and they're like, wow, man,
- 18:00Speaker 2: this is dope, and then they go to another show,
- 18:02Speaker 2: and that's that's how it works.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's it's really that that word of mouth.
- 18:07Speaker 3: It's like the spark that lights the flame.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Almost, and you've got to like go out and touch
- 18:11Speaker 1: somebody however you uniquely touch somebody to get them interesting.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Yeah. But I remember not too long ago, a few
- 18:19Speaker 2: years ago, somebody said to me, you know what, music's
- 18:23Speaker 2: gonna be like flowing like water at some point, It's
- 18:26Speaker 2: going to be free. And I was like what. They're like, yeah,
- 18:31Speaker 2: it's gonna be free and just streaming like water, and
- 18:34Speaker 2: I was like, oh, I just it totally bummed me
- 18:37Speaker 2: out because here I have labored over songwriting and getting
- 18:42Speaker 2: to a place where I could write a good you know,
- 18:44Speaker 2: just putting out a good rock record takes years to
- 18:47Speaker 2: figure out how to do it right. You know what
- 18:49Speaker 2: I mean. Like, so when I heard those words, I
- 18:52Speaker 2: was just like, oh fuck. But you know, it's just change.
- 18:56Speaker 2: That's it changes a little. It's uncomfortable, but once you
- 19:00Speaker 2: get into the change and you start seeing, Okay, it's
- 19:03Speaker 2: new and it's weird, but there is there is ways
- 19:06Speaker 2: that it can benefit you and you can work with it,
- 19:08Speaker 2: and you know, you just got to figure it all out.
- 19:10Speaker 2: You have to be open minded.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Yeah, And so I talk to me about maybe like
- 19:14Speaker 1: your singer influences. I'll tell you when I first saw
- 19:18Speaker 1: you guys, when I was, you know, a young guy,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I looked up like this fucking tattooed lead singer with
- 19:23Speaker 1: cool hair, cool pants. I'm like, this is fucking great,
- 19:26Speaker 1: Like this is what I wanted out of.
- 19:28Speaker 3: A lead singer. And I think I think that kind
- 19:30Speaker 3: of tells tells me what I want to know.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Like it, David Lee Roth, I want to be like
- 19:34Speaker 1: Paul Stanley. I want to be like these great lead
- 19:37Speaker 1: singers that came before me that could kind of lead
- 19:39Speaker 1: a crowd and lead a party.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:43Speaker 2: You know what was important for me was I got
- 19:47Speaker 2: to tell you the only reason I do music is
- 19:49Speaker 2: for myself first and foremost, because it's the only thing
- 19:53Speaker 2: that consistently makes me happy, you know. So that's the
- 19:56Speaker 2: honest truth. That's why I do it. So then I
- 19:59Speaker 2: have to go, I have to ask the question to myself,
- 20:02Speaker 2: who do I want to be? Like what do I
- 20:04Speaker 2: want to be? You know? And I want to be unforgettable,
- 20:07Speaker 2: that's first and foremost, you know what I mean, Like
- 20:10Speaker 2: whatever that means. I want to be unique in a
- 20:13Speaker 2: way that people go away from our show and I go,
- 20:16Speaker 2: I don't know if I like it. I don't know
- 20:17Speaker 2: if I hate it. But it was fucking something I'd
- 20:20Speaker 2: never seen before and it was great. You know. That's
- 20:23Speaker 2: all I want, you know, if I can accomplish that,
- 20:25Speaker 2: because you're never going to get everybody, but you know,
- 20:28Speaker 2: you can get a big amount of people, you know.
- 20:30Speaker 2: But what I always say to myself before I walk
- 20:32Speaker 2: on stage is I first I get into gratitude. I'm
- 20:36Speaker 2: so grateful I'm here. If this is it, If this
- 20:39Speaker 2: is it, Josh, if this is the last one, then
- 20:42Speaker 2: what is it? What is it going to be? You
- 20:44Speaker 2: know what I mean? And then I get and I
- 20:46Speaker 2: get into state of mind like all right, I'm going
- 20:49Speaker 2: to you know, deliver it like it's my last one,
- 20:53Speaker 2: you know, So I get into that and then and
- 20:56Speaker 2: then I just I try to just stay in the moment,
- 21:02Speaker 2: hit my marks, stay on time, stay on key, you know. Really,
- 21:07Speaker 2: if I'm dealing with an illness or any adversity that day,
- 21:10Speaker 2: you know, just kind of going to my wheelhouse and
- 21:14Speaker 2: and give the best performance I can be, whatever that is.
- 21:16Speaker 2: If I got to dance more because I'm a little
- 21:19Speaker 2: ill and I can't hit some of the notes that
- 21:22Speaker 2: I can hit when i'm you know, one percent, then
- 21:24Speaker 2: I just work around it. And you know that's what
- 21:26Speaker 2: real entertainers do. You know. Now it's changed, I mean,
- 21:29Speaker 2: like someone someone, so many of these big rock shows, now,
- 21:33Speaker 2: these big arena rock shows, they're not even live, you
- 21:36Speaker 2: know what I mean. So most of the pop shows
- 21:39Speaker 2: are not live, you know what I mean. But Cherry's
- 21:42Speaker 2: always been live. I mean. Now, we we're throwing a
- 21:45Speaker 2: few little musical samples on, like sorry and a couple
- 21:49Speaker 2: other songs, but that's it. We don't have pre recorded
- 21:52Speaker 2: vocals or anything like that, you know. So it all
- 21:54Speaker 2: comes down to at the end of the day, like, Okay,
- 21:57Speaker 2: what do I have to work with? And that's that's
- 21:58Speaker 2: what makes you like a real entertainer, because that's when
- 22:02Speaker 2: you got to like work on a fly. You know,
- 22:04Speaker 2: you have to develop more more of your game as
- 22:07Speaker 2: far as how to command an audience, how to give
- 22:11Speaker 2: them a show when you know you're you may not
- 22:13Speaker 2: be one hundred percent all that kind of stuff.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think about that all the time too,
- 22:18Speaker 1: especially being on tour, and I write it down a lot,
- 22:20Speaker 1: like we're supposed to. We encounter these hurdles, and in
- 22:25Speaker 1: day in, day out, show day, it seems like the
- 22:28Speaker 1: hurdles are you know, they come in even bigger.
- 22:30Speaker 3: And you're like, what am I?
- 22:31Speaker 2: You're a human.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I got to overcome these because I can't let the
- 22:35Speaker 1: audience know that I'm struggling on the side.
- 22:38Speaker 3: So I have to.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I have to build it up and I got to
- 22:40Speaker 1: sack up, and I got to do what I gotta
- 22:42Speaker 1: do to give this audience that paid money to see
- 22:45Speaker 1: us the best show they get heard. And I think
- 22:48Speaker 1: that's what it is, you know, it's like the show
- 22:50Speaker 1: must want no matter what.
- 22:51Speaker 3: This is what we have.
- 22:53Speaker 2: The show must go on no matter what. That's right.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, dude, thank you.
- 22:59Speaker 1: I appreciate saying that you gave me a lot of
- 23:01Speaker 1: like a lot of wisdom and encouragement and talking to
- 23:05Speaker 1: somebody that's you know, gone through it and has been
- 23:07Speaker 1: going through it as a lead singer, as an entertainer,
- 23:10Speaker 1: as a guy in a band. Uh what you said
- 23:13Speaker 1: about write you know how much it costs to stream
- 23:16Speaker 1: a song and how much time and effort that we
- 23:19Speaker 1: put into writing songs and crafting songs.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Like you're sitting in your in.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Your like and I spent uh, you know, how are
- 23:25Speaker 1: hours writing the song and somebody will stream it for nothing.
- 23:29Speaker 3: It's just crazy to me.
- 23:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, people to really take that for granted. Yeah.
- 23:33Speaker 2: And it's across the board. It's it's through, it's it's
- 23:36Speaker 2: with every genre on music. You know, people are getting
- 23:39Speaker 2: pissed musicians and hip hop artists and everybody because they
- 23:43Speaker 2: you know, when I hear a hip hop track nowadays,
- 23:46Speaker 2: you know, I'm just I'm like, I study songs, you know,
- 23:50Speaker 2: and songwriting and song and the hip hop genre is
- 23:54Speaker 2: like a different approach to songwriting, you know, and the
- 23:57Speaker 2: way they do it it's like crazy, And I'm like, man,
- 24:01Speaker 2: this shit just seems so difficult to do, and I
- 24:04Speaker 2: know it is but these guys have been practicing and
- 24:07Speaker 2: practicing and practicing and practicing and practicing the craft till
- 24:10Speaker 2: they get to a point where they get a song
- 24:11Speaker 2: that pops. Then they go, oh, this pops because I
- 24:16Speaker 2: touched on this and this and this, and then they
- 24:18Speaker 2: kind of start getting a formula and you know, it
- 24:20Speaker 2: starts working for them and they start knowing what's good
- 24:24Speaker 2: and what's not before they even put it out. And
- 24:26Speaker 2: that takes a long time. And that's the same thing
- 24:28Speaker 2: with rock artists and pop artists and and so yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 2: you know, to what you were saying, it's just people,
- 24:36Speaker 2: they just they don't understand. And that's why we get
- 24:38Speaker 2: upset when we don't get a return on that, like
- 24:41Speaker 2: like they used to back in the day, you know.
- 24:44Speaker 1: But on the other side, like there is that other
- 24:47Speaker 1: double sided coin where I feel like, I'm doing this
- 24:51Speaker 1: because I love this and I have to get these
- 24:53Speaker 1: lyrics or what I have to get exactly out of
- 24:55Speaker 1: my brain and into the universe, and if it succeeds, itceeds.
- 24:59Speaker 3: If it doesn't, it doesn't. At least I was an
- 25:00Speaker 3: artist and created it.
- 25:02Speaker 2: That's right, Yeah, that's right. Now, that's that's where the
- 25:05Speaker 2: gratitude comes in.
- 25:06Speaker 3: And you guys are just you guys are in the
- 25:07Speaker 3: States right now. You come over here. You have been
- 25:09Speaker 3: doing a bunch of shows or you did, like where
- 25:12Speaker 3: you were in the Midwest and they did the Canada,
- 25:14Speaker 3: and you're coming coming over here in September. We're clearing
- 25:18Speaker 3: the path.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, awesome. Yeah, we're We toured a lot last
- 25:23Speaker 2: year and now we're just doing weekend dates. Yeah, so
- 25:27Speaker 2: I fly out tomorrow to Toronto, do a couple of
- 25:29Speaker 2: shows and fly home on Sunday and so on until
- 25:31Speaker 2: we get to Australia. And yeah, that's what we're doing
- 25:35Speaker 2: right now.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Do you like that or do you miss the big
- 25:38Speaker 3: long runs on the tour bus and the van and
- 25:40Speaker 3: all that.
- 25:41Speaker 2: You know, it's a different dynamic. And when we started it,
- 25:45Speaker 2: I was hating it, you know, and I'm talking to
- 25:47Speaker 2: Stevie and I'm like, this is fucking exhausting. You know.
- 25:50Speaker 2: We go out and we're gone for four days, but
- 25:53Speaker 2: it feels like we're gone for a month because just
- 25:56Speaker 2: the flying and then the shows and then getting up
- 25:58Speaker 2: early and flying, you know. But now we're in the
- 26:01Speaker 2: rhythm and we get to see our family like every
- 26:03Speaker 2: week you know. So now it's like I just did
- 26:07Speaker 2: like you were saying, I did Iowa and Canada, and
- 26:09Speaker 2: then I was home on Sunday and I was in
- 26:11Speaker 2: the cific Ocean with my son surfing on Tuesday, you
- 26:15Speaker 2: know what I mean. And then I had I had
- 26:17Speaker 2: a day off yesterday, I rehearsed, and I mean today,
- 26:20Speaker 2: and then I go and fly and go to Toronto tomorrow.
- 26:23Speaker 2: You know. So it's all working.
- 26:26Speaker 3: It's very cool, and it's cool.
- 26:29Speaker 1: The idea is very cool of being able to do
- 26:32Speaker 1: that and not burn yourself out on the big long stretch.
- 26:35Speaker 1: It's like we're like I said, we're in three weeks
- 26:37Speaker 1: right now. We got one more week. We're headed to
- 26:39Speaker 1: Japan for our first time over there, and we.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Won't be that's awesome.
- 26:43Speaker 1: We won't be home till like August second, and then
- 26:46Speaker 1: we have a few weeks off when we go to
- 26:47Speaker 1: Europe after that. So it's like it's the it's the
- 26:50Speaker 1: crazy part, but we're a working band and it's what
- 26:53Speaker 1: we love and it's what we do.
- 26:54Speaker 3: It just wears on you as a I guess as
- 26:56Speaker 3: a human.
- 26:57Speaker 2: You know, yeah, you got you got a grind. When
- 27:01Speaker 2: when the grind is there, So just do it, you know, absolutely,
- 27:04Speaker 2: you go, wait till you get to Japan. You're gonna
- 27:06Speaker 2: just love it. And they're they're just amazing rock fans,
- 27:10Speaker 2: cool and you're gonna you're gonna love it. And you know,
- 27:12Speaker 2: you you start doing, you get consistent there and go
- 27:15Speaker 2: there periodically and you have a great fan base there,
- 27:18Speaker 2: you know, no matter what you know.
- 27:19Speaker 3: So yeah, and that was that was the goal. Like
- 27:22Speaker 3: as it so.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I grew up in Nebraska and as a kid from Nebraska,
- 27:26Speaker 1: like you, people don't go to Japan, especially if you're
- 27:29Speaker 1: in a rock band. So when we're talking about this tour,
- 27:31Speaker 1: I was like, man, my biggest goal, you know, live
- 27:34Speaker 1: a Buddakan all those things that those great you know
- 27:38Speaker 1: made in the East and all this, and our tour
- 27:40Speaker 1: managers like, why don't you just tag Japan onto the
- 27:43Speaker 1: end of the Australian tour. I was like that makes
- 27:45Speaker 1: all the sense and like and like it's what you said,
- 27:48Speaker 1: Like cool, if the band implodes at the end of
- 27:52Speaker 1: this month, I can say we went to jam like
- 27:54Speaker 1: I can be you know, if I'm never going to
- 27:57Speaker 1: do this again, I can I can be happy with
- 28:00Speaker 1: what we've created.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:04Speaker 3: It's very cool and I wish you all the best
- 28:05Speaker 3: of luck. Man.
- 28:06Speaker 1: It's like like one of the coolest things to talk
- 28:08Speaker 1: to you as a singer.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Guy that I like, Yeah, I like talking to you
- 28:14Speaker 2: because you're sober and that's that's Yeah, that made it
- 28:17Speaker 2: even even cooler for me.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Our whole band actually is we didn't set out to
- 28:22Speaker 1: be a sober band, but.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Like we all had extreme problems with alcohol.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great.
- 28:30Speaker 1: So we were all we all got sober and then
- 28:32Speaker 1: and then the band formed and we're like, oh, this
- 28:34Speaker 1: is really good. And I think being a sober rock
- 28:37Speaker 1: band really adds to the We can do more work
- 28:40Speaker 1: than most other bands.
- 28:41Speaker 3: We're three piece rock.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Band and like we don't get hungover.
- 28:44Speaker 3: It's really that simple.
- 28:46Speaker 2: And you have each other when you're when you're in
- 28:48Speaker 2: these places far away and it might not be a
- 28:51Speaker 2: meeting and you can like you can all like run
- 28:53Speaker 2: stuff off each other, you know, and be there for
- 28:55Speaker 2: each other. And that's that's what's great about it.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 1: And and I hope you have asked over here in Australia.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I know you guys are just gonna destroy the place,
- 29:03Speaker 1: do I Like, you can't even read off the shows.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Rosemont Hotel in Perth. That's Thursday, September twenty fourth. Prince Bandroom, Melbourne.
- 29:10Speaker 1: That's where we're at right now. Metro THEA in Sydney
- 29:13Speaker 1: and then the Triffid in Sydney. We just saw a
- 29:17Speaker 1: municipal waste there.
- 29:18Speaker 2: So yah, we're looking forward to it. It's gonna be fun.
- 29:21Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Josh, thank you so much for everything
