- 0:00Speaker 1: Hour number two now of the next round on sport
- 0:02Speaker 1: and state today. And we're about to talk some NFL
- 0:06Speaker 1: football a little bit later on, but we just gave
- 0:08Speaker 1: you the things you see in front of us are some,
- 0:11Speaker 1: some players that'll break out this weekend. Brown went very, very,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I mean, Who's ever heard of Cam Coleman, Lance? What
- 0:18Speaker 1: a breakout guy.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I mean, along with Jeremiah Smith and Malachi Toney, he
- 0:24Speaker 2: is your first team All-American.
- 0:30Speaker 3: You don't think some people will watch this Texas State game, right?
- 0:35Speaker 3: And they'll see this Cam Coleman performance, 212 receiving yards,
- 0:38Speaker 3: three touchdowns. And they'll say, man, where did the Auburn,
- 0:42Speaker 3: what did he do at Auburn? And they'll go look
- 0:43Speaker 3: at his Auburn stats and they'll be like, where did
- 0:45Speaker 3: this guy, I mean, what happened? Breakout star, Jim. Talk
- 0:49Speaker 3: of the nation. Talk of the nation.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It's like you buzzed in really quick on Jeopardy before
- 0:54Speaker 1: I even finished the question.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Breakout star.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I mean, the guys that you're not expecting to be stars,
- 0:58Speaker 1: you're expecting Cam Coleman. We gave you Makai Hughes, who
- 1:01Speaker 1: barely got a touch last year at Oregon.
- 1:03Speaker 3: And Dick Young.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And Richard Young, who Alabama fans probably didn't know was
- 1:08Speaker 1: at Colorado.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Trying to educate people. You gave us Cam Coleman. I
- 1:12Speaker 3: bet you Dick Young doesn't have 40 rush yards in
- 1:14Speaker 3: that game against Georgia Tech. You don't think so? Uh-uh.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I don't know. Hard Rock Bet wouldn't have a player
- 1:23Speaker 3: problem with somebody as low as Richard Young, would they?
- 1:26Speaker 2: They might.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I mean, Danny Scadero, your transfer wide receiver from San
- 1:30Speaker 2: Jose State, they'll definitely have a prop on him. Julian Lewis,
- 1:33Speaker 2: they'll have a prop on him. Maybe Richard Young.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I mean, if you look at the Thursday night card, guys,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I mean, Colorado-Georgia Tech is the marquee game.
- 1:40Speaker 3: It is, yes. I'll be watching.
- 1:41Speaker 2: And look, they ran for 290 yards last year on
- 1:45Speaker 2: this Colorado defense. It's going to be about stopping Justice Haynes,
- 1:49Speaker 2: Alberto Mendoza. That's right. They only lost by seven last
- 1:53Speaker 2: year when they gave up that kind of yardage on
- 1:55Speaker 2: the ground. I think this could be a dangerous game
- 1:57Speaker 2: for Brent Key.
- 1:58Speaker 3: It could be. Listen, you've got Juju, a quarterback. Right?
- 2:04Speaker 3: Richard Young. Richard Young at running back.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I mean, Brad, I feel like your tone of voice
- 2:09Speaker 1: makes it sound like you doubt my research on Richard Young.
- 2:11Speaker 3: No, I know Richard Young plays. I've learned today Richard
- 2:14Speaker 3: Young plays for Colorado. I'm now one hour old of
- 2:18Speaker 3: my knowledge of Richard Young at Colorado. I learned roughly
- 2:21Speaker 3: an hour ago he plays for Colorado.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Who will dress flashier in the pregame?
- 2:26Speaker 3: Will it be... The Redneck, what was it? The Ghetto Gangster?
- 2:30Speaker 2: No, the Redneck Gangster.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I just can't believe we're going to watch a game
- 2:34Speaker 1: tomorrow night. If you're an Alabama fan, you're going to
- 2:36Speaker 1: watch a game tomorrow night coming off a year when
- 2:39Speaker 1: you couldn't run the football. And in the marquee game
- 2:41Speaker 1: on Thursday night, you're going to have Justice Haynes on
- 2:43Speaker 1: one team and.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Richard Young on another team. And say both of those
- 2:47Speaker 3: used to be at Alabama. And one of them or
- 2:49Speaker 3: both of them may go for 100 yards.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't believe Bama didn't try to get Justice
- 2:53Speaker 2: Haynes back.
- 2:53Speaker 3: No, why not? Why not?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Hey, our friends at Hard Rock Bet, they've got all
- 2:57Speaker 1: the fun for you. They're partners with us here on

- 3:45Speaker 1: Hardrock.bet backslash clay. Hardrock.bet backslash clay right now with our
- 3:53Speaker 1: friends at Hardrock Bet. Speaking of Hardrock Bet, let's go
- 3:56Speaker 1: ahead and throw out our picks for the NFC South.
- 3:59Speaker 1: NFC South champion. Nope, let's go bottom up. Last place
- 4:03Speaker 1: team in the NFC. NFC South this year.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Lance, you first. Who will be dead last?
- 4:09Speaker 2: I am going to go with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Oh, I hate you. Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I don't think that they're going to fall off much.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I just think it's going to be bottlenecked again. in
- 4:20Speaker 2: the NFC South.
- 4:22Speaker 3: You're talking about probably two games separates the bottom from
- 4:25Speaker 3: the top. We're probably talking about nine wins to seven wins.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I mean, if this was a Drake song, there's not
- 4:30Speaker 3: a long way from the bottom to the top.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Just to remind people, you had three 8-9s last year
- 4:34Speaker 2: by the tiebreaker. Carolina won the division, and then the
- 4:37Speaker 2: Saints were 6-11. So I just think it's going to
- 4:40Speaker 2: shift around a little bit. I think Baker's losing just
- 4:43Speaker 2: a little bit of juice, and I think Tampa's going
- 4:45Speaker 2: to be around seven wins.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Saints are going to be bottom for me again. I
- 4:50Speaker 3: don't love their quarterback situation. I am sorry to do
- 4:54Speaker 3: this to Scott.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Oh, I agree.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Scott, they've got all the weapons they need except for
- 5:03Speaker 3: a really important weapon, and that's quarterback. You cannot suck
- 5:05Speaker 3: at quarterback. Yep, and I unfortunately think you're going to
- 5:08Speaker 3: suck at quarterback.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Yep.
- 5:10Speaker 3: That's the unfortunate. I hate it for the Falcons. I do.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I hate it for the Falcons.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Well, you had a bad injury and the Pierce suspension.
- 5:15Speaker 3: On defense, too. That's right. Yeah, I mean, that's just.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And Stefanski, poor guy, just cannot find a quarterback to
- 5:21Speaker 3: play for him as a head coach. He can't do it.
- 5:23Speaker 3: So who's your winner? I'm going to go Falcons. Who's
- 5:25Speaker 3: your division winner? I am going to take the Panthers again.
- 5:29Speaker 3: I'm going to take the Panthers.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I think Dave Canales, the rapport he is building with
- 5:33Speaker 2: Bryce Young. I think Bryce is going to be okay.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I think Tyler Shuck's going to be okay. If Shuck
- 5:37Speaker 2: can stay healthy from Oregon to Texas Tech to Louisville,
- 5:41Speaker 2: I think he's going to have a better NFL career
- 5:43Speaker 2: than he had a college career. Just watching him in
- 5:45Speaker 2: a one-game situation against the Rams last year, he's got
- 5:49Speaker 2: a lot of poise, a lot of confidence. But I
- 5:51Speaker 2: do like Carolina to win this division again.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I forgive you all. Tampa Bay will win this division.
- 5:56Speaker 3: They'll win this division by two games. By two games.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Separation this year. They'll actually have a winning record to
- 6:01Speaker 3: win the division. I'm saying something to this division.
- 6:05Speaker 1: This is the first time since the Super Bowl year
- 6:08Speaker 1: that I believe Tampa Bay is healthy tackle to tackle
- 6:11Speaker 1: at the offensive line. And they've got a really good
- 6:14Speaker 1: offensive line.
- 6:15Speaker 2: They're back.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I know no Mike Evans, but the receiving core with
- 6:21Speaker 1: Abuka out there, still very talented. Godwin out there. And
- 6:24Speaker 1: Bucky Irving running the football. I like me some Bucky Irving.
- 6:27Speaker 1: This Tampa Bay team, they got.
- 6:29Speaker 3: They got the big guy in the middle tied down
- 6:32Speaker 3: for a year on the defense, Vita Bay. The secondary
- 6:35Speaker 3: is getting better.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And who's your head coach?
- 6:38Speaker 3: Well, I mean, the guy is a great defensive coordinator.
- 6:41Speaker 3: That's right. It's all about defense, Lance. Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Our offensive coordinators have gotten slightly worse because they're both
- 6:49Speaker 1: coaching in Carolina and Jacksonville.
- 6:51Speaker 3: We've just put OCs into the NFL. Well, I tell
- 6:53Speaker 3: you what, it is– that division is– I mean, like
- 6:58Speaker 3: Stefanski is probably the biggest name in that division, even
- 7:01Speaker 3: bigger than Todd Bowles. Yeah. But, I mean, you could
- 7:03Speaker 3: do a police lineup in that division of the head coaches.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I think Kellen Moore is big just because of football fans.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Because he was with the Cowboys?
- 7:10Speaker 2: Well, because of how good he was at Boise State, too.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I just think overall football fans know who Kellen Moore is.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Because most of these coaches, their playing careers are kind
- 7:20Speaker 2: of anonymous.
- 7:21Speaker 3: That is the NFC South.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You can go place those bets at Hard Rock Bets
- 7:25Speaker 1: on the future champions there. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are,
- 7:28Speaker 1: as two-thirds of our panel says, the Carolina Panthers here.
- 7:32Speaker 1: By the way, did you know the team that's won
- 7:36Speaker 1: more playoff games but has never won a Super Bowl?
- 7:39Speaker 1: This is a little trivia for you.
- 7:40Speaker 3: The team that has won the most playoff games without
- 7:42Speaker 3: winning a Super Bowl? That's got to be Buffalo. Buffalo's
- 7:44Speaker 3: actually second, tied with the Titans, who inherited the Oilers
- 7:48Speaker 3: as well. That's 22 for the Bills-Titans.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I'll go Minnesota.
- 7:52Speaker 1: The Minnesota Vikings by 10, LT. 32 playoff wins over
- 7:56Speaker 1: the year. but never a Super Bowl. They're like Buffalo, right?
- 8:00Speaker 1: Four-time Super Bowl losers?
- 8:02Speaker 2: I thought it was three.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I think it's three. No, it's four. Is it four?
- 8:06Speaker 4: They were never consecutive. They were the first franchise to
- 8:08Speaker 4: lose four Super Bowls.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I think that they are going to be sneaky good
- 8:11Speaker 2: this year. I wanted to snatch them late in our draft.
- 8:15Speaker 2: You know, their win total is eight and a half.
- 8:16Speaker 2: But I think Kyler Murray is going to be good
- 8:18Speaker 2: in Kevin O'Connell's system. You know, Brian Flores has got
- 8:21Speaker 2: that defense dialed in. Again, you said we're going to
- 8:24Speaker 2: start with the most competitive division. I agree as far
- 8:27Speaker 2: as like the the.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Space between bottom and top. That's right, yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 2: But the best is for his teams that could actually
- 8:34Speaker 2: make a deep run, maybe win a Super Bowl as
- 8:36Speaker 2: the NFC North. I do think Minnesota's going to be improved.
- 8:38Speaker 3: This happens sometimes to franchises, but I think the best
- 8:41Speaker 3: Vikings team of all time ever got to the Super Bowl. Oh, yeah.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Scott's Falcons.
- 8:45Speaker 2: 98.
- 8:46Speaker 3: That Vikings team was incredible. That missed kick. Yeah, the
- 8:49Speaker 3: missed kick. I mean, didn't miss a kick all year
- 8:51Speaker 3: until the one that mattered the most. Hate it for them.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I know you do.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Well, then when, you know, Stephon Diggs walks it off
- 8:56Speaker 2: against the Saints, they're hosting the NFC Championship game against
- 8:59Speaker 2: Nick Foles, and you're like, they've got all the momentum.
- 9:02Speaker 2: I know Case Keenum. Think about the starting quarterbacks in
- 9:04Speaker 2: that game, Case Keenum and Nick Foles. But you just
- 9:07Speaker 2: felt like that was going to be Minnesota's year.
- 9:09Speaker 1: By the way, the Chargers, after you go Vikings, Bills, Titans,
- 9:14Speaker 1: Chargers with 17– Bengals and Browns with 16. Falcons and
- 9:20Speaker 1: Lions with 14.
- 9:21Speaker 2: When's the last time the Chargers won a playoff game, though?
- 9:24Speaker 3: It's been a minute, right? Yeah, it had to be
- 9:28Speaker 3: Phillip Rivers. It was, yeah.
- 9:30Speaker 1: So just interesting, those teams have made it to the
- 9:33Speaker 1: playoffs and have yet to come up.
- 9:35Speaker 3: With a Super Bowl. So is that the entire list?
- 9:37Speaker 3: That's everybody's double digits. Everybody's double digits. Yeah, because you've
- 9:41Speaker 3: got like Jacksonville and Carolina. that have never won a
- 9:46Speaker 3: Super Bowl.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Is that all-time, Jim?
- 9:49Speaker 3: I don't know, Brooks.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I was trying to find the story. I scribbled it
- 9:52Speaker 1: down this morning when I was doing show notes.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Fair enough.
- 9:54Speaker 3: I was just curious.
- 9:55Speaker 4: That's surprising the Lions have that many playoff wins, to
- 9:57Speaker 4: be honest, unless it's all time.
- 9:59Speaker 3: I would have to say it's got to be super
- 10:00Speaker 3: bowl era so it's super bowl year it's not without
- 10:02Speaker 3: a super bowl win so yeah i mean super bowl
- 10:05Speaker 3: win so it had to start in 67 is that
- 10:07Speaker 3: when the super bowl started 67 yeah yeah that does
- 10:11Speaker 3: seem like a lot of detroit wins for a team
- 10:14Speaker 3: that rarely goes yeah yeah Anyway, that's a little NFL
- 10:18Speaker 3: talk here on the show today. Back to college football
- 10:22Speaker 3: as we get ready for this opening weekend. And one
- 10:26Speaker 3: of the things I wanted to bring up on the
- 10:28Speaker 3: show today was the honoring of past players. It is
- 10:35Speaker 3: amazing to me that at West Virginia, we're just now
- 10:40Speaker 3: getting around to retiring Pat White's jersey.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:44Speaker 1: But they're doing that this weekend. Pat White's getting his
- 10:47Speaker 1: jersey retired. For those that don't remember, Lance, remind us
- 10:50Speaker 1: just how good Pat White was at West Virginia.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I mean, he had a play away from playing for
- 10:55Speaker 2: a national championship.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Was that 2007?
- 10:56Speaker 2: One of the biggest upsets ever. Yeah, it was 2007.
- 11:00Speaker 3: 2007, yeah.
- 11:00Speaker 2: They had Steve Slayton in that backfield. I mean, that
- 11:03Speaker 2: was some really, really dominant Rich Rodriguez offenses and Pat
- 11:08Speaker 2: White in today's football, he was just a little bit
- 11:11Speaker 2: before his time.
- 11:12Speaker 3: He was.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I think he might even get as small as he
- 11:14Speaker 2: was just because of guys like Kyler Murray. Maybe he
- 11:16Speaker 2: even gets looks in the NFL.
- 11:18Speaker 3: To your point, by the way.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I think he played for your Dolphins for a minute, right?
- 11:20Speaker 2: He did.
- 11:21Speaker 3: He was on the team. A lot of guys play
- 11:23Speaker 3: quarterback for the Dolphins. But, I mean, to Jim's point,
- 11:26Speaker 3: we're approaching 20 years since that season, and it's not
- 11:30Speaker 3: like Pat White has been tied up in the NFL
- 11:32Speaker 3: and can't get back to Morgantown. That's right. He's been
- 11:35Speaker 3: out of the league a while. Like, why did it
- 11:37Speaker 3: take 20 years to do this?
- 11:38Speaker 4: He has a stat that I think will never be
- 11:41Speaker 4: touched again, especially in this NIL transfer portal era. He's
- 11:44Speaker 4: the only quarterback to start and win four bowl games.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, you'll never see that again.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Wow. Wow. So he started and won four bowl games.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Because he started as a freshman.
- 11:55Speaker 3: 4-0 in bowl games. Correct.
- 11:57Speaker 4: He won his freshman year the Sugar Bowl against Georgia.
- 12:00Speaker 4: It had been relocated because of Katrina. It was in
- 12:03Speaker 4: the Georgia Dome. And he was a freshman then and
- 12:05Speaker 4: won his next three bowl games too.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Lance has Julian Sane approaching that record perhaps. Maybe he'll
- 12:11Speaker 3: be 5. He'll be the first to start. He'll go
- 12:13Speaker 3: 5 for 5.
- 12:15Speaker 2: He's never really in bowl games. I mean, like technically
- 12:17Speaker 2: it's playoffs.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you got to twist the rules a
- 12:19Speaker 3: little bit.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Wait, wait, didn't they just lose to Miami?
- 12:22Speaker 3: He lost the bowl game. So he's 0-1.
- 12:24Speaker 4: He's 0-1.
- 12:24Speaker 2: But I think West Virginia, I think what happened back
- 12:26Speaker 2: to the original question was Bill Stewart takes the program over.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Help me out, Neil Brown was there. Who else is–
- 12:33Speaker 2: you've just– The guy that went to Houston that got fired.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Yeah, Holgerson.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Dana Holgerson. You've had a lot of fluctuation there,
- 12:39Speaker 2: and I think now Rich Rod gets back. He wants
- 12:42Speaker 2: to instill– west virginia tradition yeah he's big on this.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Right he probably got back he's like we never honored
- 12:48Speaker 3: pat white after i left and went to michigan and
- 12:50Speaker 3: left the program i.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Had dry and truthfully it probably didn't happen because they
- 12:54Speaker 1: got so pissed off at rich rod for leaving that's
- 12:57Speaker 1: right he was tied to rich that they didn't honor
- 12:59Speaker 1: those great teams that rich rod had so rich rod's
- 13:01Speaker 1: back now and he's like we're gonna we're gonna make
- 13:03Speaker 1: this right.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I would just say if you say brown named the
- 13:05Speaker 3: greatest football player in west virginia history i go pat
- 13:09Speaker 3: white yeah i mean that's that's I think what most
- 13:11Speaker 3: people would say.
- 13:12Speaker 1: By the way, 11 a.m. Central, 12 Eastern on TNT. So,
- 13:17Speaker 1: I mean, football broadcasts are all over the place now.
- 13:20Speaker 1: TNT for that game, Coastal and West Virginia, 11 a.m.
- 13:24Speaker 1: TNT Central time.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Are they just going by Coastal now? I see it
- 13:28Speaker 2: on our sheet.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Coastal Carolina doesn't fit into our sheet.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I'm just wondering because I saw Miley Cyrus is dropping
- 13:34Speaker 2: her last name. She's supposed to be Miley. So I
- 13:36Speaker 2: thought maybe Coastal's doing this.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I could put Sea Carolina. No, I like Coastal.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I just know Coastal because I figured we all know
- 13:42Speaker 1: who is good. Coastal in West Virginia, 11 a.m.
- 13:45Speaker 3: On TNT.
- 13:46Speaker 1: If you do look at our sheet, some games are
- 13:48Speaker 1: not on the front, but they are on the back.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And that's where you find Coastal in West Virginia on
- 13:54Speaker 1: our sheet there. Speaking of TV windows this weekend, I mean,
- 13:57Speaker 1: week zero worked out really well. Early window, afternoon window,
- 14:02Speaker 1: prime window, late night window. The early window, we're struggling
- 14:07Speaker 1: for good contests.
- 14:08Speaker 3: It's tough. It's tough. I mean, where we are, I'll
- 14:10Speaker 3: have Bama, East Carolina on the main.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Yeah, 12 Eastern, 11 Central on ABC with East Carolina, Alabama.
- 14:18Speaker 2: There's Alabama ties all over the place because you've got, obviously,
- 14:22Speaker 2: Sig at Indiana.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that's another.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Jamarcus Shepard's taking over Oregon State.
- 14:27Speaker 3: That's right, Oregon State, former Bama assistant. That's another game,
- 14:30Speaker 3: you know, I want to watch that Indiana game early
- 14:32Speaker 3: on Fox, Jim, just to see Josh Hoover. Okay, okay. No,
- 14:37Speaker 3: I mean, I don't think it's going to be a
- 14:38Speaker 3: good game. I just want to see Josh Hoover in
- 14:40Speaker 3: action and see if it looks a little bit like
- 14:42Speaker 3: Mendoza from last year. Listen, I know you killed the
- 14:44Speaker 3: CW broadcast. It was not good. Yesterday? Not good.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I've got a feeling Miami of Ohio and Pitt 1130
- 14:51Speaker 1: on CW in that first window could be interesting.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Boy, Narduzzi better hope it's not. I mean, I don't
- 14:58Speaker 3: know point spread on that game at Hard Rock Bet,
- 15:00Speaker 3: but that's an upset. Because I think Pitt fans probably think,
- 15:06Speaker 3: why not us? I mean, if Miami's going to win
- 15:09Speaker 3: the league, why can't we be the team that plays
- 15:11Speaker 3: them in the championship game? And listen, if you just
- 15:13Speaker 3: like good competitive football, if you're not just looking for
- 15:15Speaker 3: brand names, ESPNU in that early window, Liberty versus James Madison,
- 15:21Speaker 3: Billy Napier now the coach of James Madison, That will
- 15:24Speaker 3: be a competitive football game.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Oh, I agree. And I think Jamie Caldwell's got an
- 15:29Speaker 2: improved Liberty team coming back this year. And I don't
- 15:32Speaker 2: know what to expect from JMU. I mean, you've had
- 15:34Speaker 2: your last two head coaches ripped away from you and
- 15:36Speaker 2: Kirk Cignetti and Bob Chesney. JMU coming off a perfect
- 15:40Speaker 2: 12-0 last year, goes to a college football playoff. They
- 15:42Speaker 2: get blown out, but they're six-and-a-half-point favorites against the Flames.
- 15:45Speaker 2: I think it'll be a really good game. By the way,
- 15:47Speaker 2: Pittsburgh's 16-and-a-half.
- 15:49Speaker 3: 16-and-a-half. Okay, all right, Jim, maybe it is a little closer.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I would have thought that's a bigger number.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Afternoon window, Baylor and Auburn, of course, is the marquee
- 15:55Speaker 1: game on ABC. Some interest to me on Fox with
- 15:59Speaker 1: Boston College and Cincinnati. Can Boston College be a little
- 16:04Speaker 1: bit better, and how bad is Cincinnati going to be
- 16:06Speaker 1: in the Big 12? Some people think Cincinnati– could be
- 16:10Speaker 1: only above Iowa State in the Big 12 race. I
- 16:12Speaker 1: think Satt's got to be on the hot seat there
- 16:14Speaker 1: at Cincinnati.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I think the loser of that game. Bill O'Brien, people
- 16:17Speaker 2: are already talking about how bad Boston College has been.
- 16:20Speaker 3: I don't know what they want up there. I mean,
- 16:22Speaker 3: I don't know what's going to make that a good program.
- 16:24Speaker 3: But yeah, you're probably right. Satterfield or O'Brien probably leaves
- 16:28Speaker 3: this game fighting for their job the rest of the year.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Afternoon window on FS1, Marshall and Penn State. It'll be
- 16:34Speaker 1: interesting just to see what Penn State looks like under
- 16:36Speaker 1: Matt Campbell. Yeah, they're going to be obviously a heavy
- 16:39Speaker 1: favorite in this game against Marshall, but.
- 16:42Speaker 3: I want to see Rocco Becht in that uniform, and
- 16:45Speaker 3: I want to see if it looks like Penn State
- 16:47Speaker 3: or if it looks like Iowa State playing Penn State
- 16:49Speaker 3: football or Penn State uniforms.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I mean, when you've got 24 transfers coming in from Ames,
- 16:53Speaker 2: I mean, it might look like that. But, you know,
- 16:55Speaker 2: we saw Iowa State not last year, but. Two years ago,
- 16:59Speaker 2: played for a Big 12 championship and really a half
- 17:01Speaker 2: away from getting into a college football playoff with a
- 17:03Speaker 2: lot of those guys.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I know Drew Aller is fighting for him. I can't
- 17:07Speaker 3: remember where it ended up with him in Pittsburgh. I
- 17:08Speaker 3: don't know if he's the backup to Aaron Rodgers. They
- 17:10Speaker 3: have four teams. I don't know if he's going to
- 17:13Speaker 3: be the backup is what I'm saying.
- 17:14Speaker 2: He is number four.
- 17:15Speaker 3: He's number four.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, then Drew Aller.
- 17:20Speaker 3: I mean, that's an upgraded quarterback to me, Rocco Beck
- 17:23Speaker 3: replacing Drew Aller. I would agree the way Aller played.
- 17:25Speaker 3: The way Aller played at Penn State. On the college level,
- 17:28Speaker 3: not with the same NFL expectations. I'm not talking about NFL. Yeah,
- 17:31Speaker 3: I'm just talking about on the collegiate level, I think
- 17:33Speaker 3: Penn State has upgraded a quarterback going from Aller to Beck.
- 17:35Speaker 2: But no Katron Allen and Nick Singleton. And those guys,
- 17:38Speaker 2: much like Notre Dame running the ball so effectively last year,
- 17:42Speaker 2: is Penn State going to be able to run the
- 17:43Speaker 2: ball at that level?
- 17:45Speaker 1: Afternoon window, you'll peek in to see Boise State-Oregon to
- 17:47Speaker 1: see if the brand Boise can make that game interesting. ESPNU,
- 17:51Speaker 1: you'll sneak in to see what Mestemaker looks like for
- 17:55Speaker 1: Oklahoma State in Tulsa as they play Tulsa. And then
- 17:59Speaker 1: the most competitive game on paper should be Tulane and
- 18:02Speaker 1: Duke afternoon window on the ACC network, though Tulane won't
- 18:05Speaker 1: be as good as they were last year and Duke
- 18:07Speaker 1: won't be as good as they were last year. they
- 18:09Speaker 1: will be close in talent level. Yeah, I'm interested actually
- 18:12Speaker 1: in that 245 ESPNU kick just to see Mastemaker at
- 18:15Speaker 1: Oklahoma State because that's a team that has become a
- 18:17Speaker 1: sexy pick to ruin it for somebody. Maybe not play
- 18:20Speaker 1: for the Big 12, but to maybe sneak in the
- 18:23Speaker 1: bottom of the top 25 at the end of the year.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Well, that offense was so dominant last year. It was
- 18:27Speaker 2: the number one offense. They lead the FBS in first-year transfers.
- 18:34Speaker 2: So Caleb Hawkins, Drew Mestemaker, I think the offense is
- 18:36Speaker 2: going to be really good. I stole them late last night.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I think there's six wins.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I was going to say, I think you get
- 18:42Speaker 3: six or seven wins out of them if you have
- 18:43Speaker 3: them in some sort of fantasy pool.
- 18:45Speaker 1: In that prime window, Clemson and LSU on ABC is
- 18:48Speaker 1: by far the best. We'll look in on the SEC
- 18:51Speaker 1: Network to see John Summerall's debut at Florida to see
- 18:55Speaker 1: what that looks like. NBC, can Western Michigan pull an
- 18:59Speaker 1: Appalachian State and go into the big house and beat Michigan?
- 19:02Speaker 1: Sexy upset pick for some people around the country. Other
- 19:04Speaker 1: than that, not a ton of good games, except maybe
- 19:07Speaker 1: on ESPN +. Arkansas State and Memphis, LT thinks we
- 19:10Speaker 1: could see an upset there.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, you could, yeah. And I think with Mississippi State,
- 19:15Speaker 3: just see a little Camario Taylor.
- 19:17Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I think I'll watch some of that with ULM at
- 19:20Speaker 3: 630 on ESPNU, just see him play a little bit.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yep, and then late night, that UCLA-California game on ESPN
- 19:26Speaker 1: will be fun watching late.
- 19:28Speaker 2: And UNLV can get death-nailed.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, if they lose to Hawaii. I mean, they're
- 19:33Speaker 3: two and a.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Half point favorites right now.
- 19:35Speaker 3: On the island?
- 19:35Speaker 2: On the island. I think Hawaii does. I mean, look,
- 19:37Speaker 2: that was devastating. The one turnover led to the scoop
- 19:41Speaker 2: and score, but Hawaii played much better in the second half.
- 19:44Speaker 3: I know Hawaii had to travel just as far as
- 19:46Speaker 3: UNLV did to get back to the island. That feels
- 19:48Speaker 3: like a bad setup, though, for you. UNLV having to
- 19:51Speaker 3: play late that Saturday and the emotional loss to Memphis
- 19:56Speaker 3: on a big stage for them. It was a big
- 19:57Speaker 3: game for them. Yeah. and then have to travel to
- 19:59Speaker 3: Hawaii to play, that's a tough spot for them. I
- 20:01Speaker 3: agree with Lance.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Mostly just a letdown of thinking we're about to be
- 20:05Speaker 1: the group of six and now facing an uphill battle
- 20:08Speaker 1: to be that.
- 20:08Speaker 3: And I was in an environment where people were doing
- 20:10Speaker 3: the wave at the wrong time. Now you're going to
- 20:11Speaker 3: go play in that little high school stadium at Hawaii? Yeah.
- 20:14Speaker 3: That's going to be a weird game for them.
- 20:16Speaker 1: That's the TV windows this weekend. Some of the games
- 20:18Speaker 1: that we're watching, you can have a lot of fun
- 20:20Speaker 1: with them with our friends at Hard Rock Bets if
- 20:23Speaker 1: you download the app. When we come back, That conversation
- 20:27Speaker 1: piece on get up and first take all the time
- 20:30Speaker 1: that seems to be continually bringing up Kalen DeBoer in Alabama.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Are they wasting airtime? Our thoughts on that when we
- 20:37Speaker 1: come back next on the next round presented by Hard
- 20:40Speaker 1: Rock Bets here on Sporting State.
- 20:42Speaker 3: By the way, if you can go to nextround.store.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Nextround.store, and you can download the soundtrack of Sporting State
- 20:49Speaker 1: there and enjoy that music.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Bed all you want. I'm kidding.
- 20:51Speaker 1: It's not available in the store, but we have a
- 20:53Speaker 1: lot of gear. you can go and get nextround.store. Here's
- 20:57Speaker 1: Kalen DeVore, Alabama's head coach, on how he's preparing his
- 21:01Speaker 1: young quarterback, Kalen Russell, for the stage, the atmosphere, not
- 21:06Speaker 1: only in Brian Denny, but when they go on the
- 21:08Speaker 1: road the following week to Kentucky.
- 21:10Speaker 5: How do you prepare Kalen Russell for the atmosphere as going.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Into his first year?
- 21:17Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's where it's nice that he's been here
- 21:19Speaker 5: for a year. Kalen having been here You know, last season,
- 21:23Speaker 5: being a part of it, you know, there's a little
- 21:26Speaker 5: bit of piece of that. But until you're really in it,
- 21:28Speaker 5: I think there's always a part that, you know, you
- 21:32Speaker 5: learn on the run. But this is a great way
- 21:35Speaker 5: to get him started here playing at home. And, you know,
- 21:39Speaker 5: there's kind of kind of a I think a way
- 21:43Speaker 5: as far as him being familiar with with everything. Our offense,
- 21:46Speaker 5: he obviously knows.
- 21:47Speaker 2: That being here, too.
- 21:49Speaker 5: His players, his personnel around him. He's pretty comfortable with
- 21:54Speaker 5: a lot of guys that we have returning. And then
- 21:57Speaker 5: the scheme and his growth there, I think, shows up.
- 21:59Speaker 5: And so the next step are those things that you're
- 22:02Speaker 5: referring to. And that's the environments. That's the defenses that
- 22:05Speaker 5: he's going to face. And that, again, you know, you
- 22:09Speaker 5: take those as they come each and every week.
- 22:11Speaker 1: More on Kalen DeBoer and his job status coming up momentarily.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Let me remind you that our friends at Crockett Coffee
- 22:17Speaker 1: brings you part of the Next round on Sporting State,
- 22:20Speaker 1: that's the coffee company that was started by Clay Travis,
- 22:23Speaker 1: Buck Sexton, and Buck's brother Mason.
- 22:25Speaker 3: It's named after.

- 23:15Speaker 1: It's good coffee made in America doing great things. CrockettCoffee.com.
- 23:20Speaker 1: That's C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, CrockettCoffee.com. Very popular for the last month, almost
- 23:30Speaker 1: three times a week. Feinbaum a big part of it
- 23:34Speaker 1: on First Take and Get Up. Debating hot seat for
- 23:37Speaker 1: Kalen DeBoer, the future of Kalen DeBoer, all of this
- 23:41Speaker 1: of Kalen DeBoer. I think we've all said this all
- 23:44Speaker 1: summer long. Kalen DeBoer ain't losing his job this year
- 23:48Speaker 1: in Tuscaloosa. It would take five and seven, four and
- 23:51Speaker 1: eight for him to lose his job.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Or something crazy off field, which you never worry about
- 23:55Speaker 2: with Kalen DeBoer.
- 23:56Speaker 1: He got a new contract, Jimmy Sexton negotiated, for $ 87 million.
- 24:02Speaker 1: And there's no mitigation. It runs through 2033. No mitigation, Brownie,
- 24:08Speaker 1: means what? It means Alabama owes him $ 87 million.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Even if he takes another job. That's right. That's what
- 24:15Speaker 3: no mitigation means is if he takes another job, the
- 24:18Speaker 3: salary of that job does not work against what Alabama's
- 24:20Speaker 3: buying out. So you pay the whole amount regardless. That's right.
- 24:23Speaker 1: You're going to pay him $ 87 million if you get
- 24:26Speaker 1: rid of him regardless. And I personally don't think Alabama
- 24:30Speaker 1: has that kind of money, and I don't think it'd
- 24:31Speaker 1: be smart. barring just a total disaster, to make that move.
- 24:36Speaker 1: So this whole discussion on the networks in the morning
- 24:40Speaker 1: about his job future is really a waste of airtime,
- 24:45Speaker 1: in my opinion. But staff changes are a different thing.
- 24:49Speaker 1: You touched on this yesterday. The hottest seat in Tuscaloosa
- 24:52Speaker 1: is not Kalen DeBoer.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's Ryan Grubb, and I think he got magnified
- 24:56Speaker 2: last year when you saw Mike McDonald and the Seattle
- 24:58Speaker 2: Seahawks win a Super Bowl. and your Super Bowl MVP
- 25:02Speaker 2: was Kenneth Walker, a running back, and they could not
- 25:04Speaker 2: run the football. I think they were 31-32 in the
- 25:06Speaker 2: NFL two years ago. Ryan Grubb comes into Tuscaloosa. They
- 25:11Speaker 2: cannot run the football. Alabama fans hated to see that.
- 25:14Speaker 2: We know head coaches. The scapegoat is typically one of
- 25:17Speaker 2: the coordinators, sometimes both of the coordinators. I think what's fascinating, though,
- 25:21Speaker 2: if Alabama went 9-3 back to Kalen DeBoer's first year,
- 25:26Speaker 2: they missed the college football playoff. USC goes 7-5, they
- 25:30Speaker 2: fire Lincoln Riley, USC offers Kayla DeBoer. Is it kind
- 25:33Speaker 2: of a mutual decision at that point where Alabama fans
- 25:37Speaker 2: are like, I did an okay job, but we don't
- 25:39Speaker 2: have a problem with him leaving, and USC fans are
- 25:41Speaker 2: kind of excited about him coming back West Coast?
- 25:44Speaker 1: I think that was the scenario that was unfolding last
- 25:46Speaker 1: year until Alabama ended up with Michigan until Alabama ended up.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Coming back and winning the Iron Bowl, holding on that
- 25:53Speaker 1: big fourth down play, Ty Simpson to the end zone.
- 25:55Speaker 1: If that gets knocked down and Alabama loses the Iron Bowl,
- 25:58Speaker 1: I would not be surprised at all if Kalen DeBoer
- 26:01Speaker 1: was the head coach of Michigan.
- 26:03Speaker 3: Certainly, Jimmy Sexton convinced Alabama that was going to be
- 26:05Speaker 3: the case.
- 26:06Speaker 2: But it's going to be devastating for Alabama fans if
- 26:08Speaker 2: they go 9-3 and miss a college football playoff.
- 26:10Speaker 3: No matter who the coach is, Kalen DeBoer.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I know, but Kalen DeBoer is going to be like, damn,
- 26:14Speaker 2: I've been winning a lot of games here, and it's
- 26:16Speaker 2: just not good enough. So I could see a scenario
- 26:18Speaker 2: like that possibly play out. I think Alabama's going to
- 26:21Speaker 2: be better than 9-3. I think they're going to be 10-2. Again,
- 26:23Speaker 2: I think we've all got them in the college football playoff.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I know I do, yeah. I do.
- 26:27Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 26:28Speaker 3: I think Alabama's going to play for the SEC championship.
- 26:30Speaker 3: I think they're going to be that good. I do
- 26:33Speaker 3: think it is silly to talk about him getting fired,
- 26:35Speaker 3: if nothing else, for the money. That's right. I mean,
- 26:38Speaker 3: if nothing else, just start with the money. First of all,
- 26:41Speaker 3: Alabama paid the biggest buyout on record to hire a
- 26:45Speaker 3: coach away from the school. Not to fire a coach.
- 26:48Speaker 3: That's Jimbo. But the money that you pay to another
- 26:52Speaker 3: school to hire their coach... Is a record. That's the record.
- 26:56Speaker 3: That's the most anybody that follows this says that's the
- 26:59Speaker 3: most that has ever been paid. So you're already pot
- 27:01Speaker 3: committed on what you paid to get him. You're already
- 27:03Speaker 3: in the hole because nobody came and hired Nick Saban away.
- 27:06Speaker 3: So you didn't get a buyout from another school that
- 27:08Speaker 3: you're just flipping... You paid all that out of pocket,
- 27:11Speaker 3: so you're already in for $ 10 million and whatever you
- 27:15Speaker 3: had to buy the coaches out for. And then you're
- 27:17Speaker 3: going to double down on that with a buyout on
- 27:19Speaker 3: a contract you just extended and added $ 2 million to,
- 27:22Speaker 3: which adds to the 90% buyout that he gets. You
- 27:25Speaker 3: just did that last year. It doesn't even make business
- 27:27Speaker 3: sense to do it. Now, let me just quickly say it.
- 27:30Speaker 3: I see college athletics programs all the time do stuff
- 27:33Speaker 3: that doesn't make business sense. They pay big buyouts that
- 27:35Speaker 3: you're like, what are you doing? The whole reason we
- 27:37Speaker 3: even have these big buyouts is because colleges do things
- 27:39Speaker 3: that don't make business sense.
- 27:40Speaker 1: But these numbers would be equivalent, if you got rid
- 27:42Speaker 1: of DeBoer after this year, to Jimbo Fisher's buyout.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Yeah, you'd be right there. It's the biggest buyouts of
- 27:48Speaker 3: all time, of course, Jimbo Fisher and Kayla DeBoer.
- 27:51Speaker 2: I mean, Jimbo Fisher deserved to lose his job based
- 27:53Speaker 2: on the expectation there. Back to what you said, there
- 27:56Speaker 2: is zero chance performance-wise he loses his job.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I agree. I'm with you 100% on Ryan Grubb.
- 28:04Speaker 3: They're good friends.
- 28:05Speaker 1: They've been together forever. It'd be a tough decision. But
- 28:07Speaker 1: if that offense can't run the football again this year,
- 28:10Speaker 1: I think that'd be a tough call. But DeBoer would
- 28:12Speaker 1: probably change O.C.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Saying what a dumb discussion this is but the discussion
- 28:18Speaker 3: not not because we say it should go away i'm
- 28:20Speaker 3: just saying it doesn't go away for some.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Reason well i think the reason it doesn't on uh
- 28:25Speaker 1: get up and first take is because much like the
- 28:27Speaker 1: cowboys it's the logo is good tv the logo is
- 28:32Speaker 1: good tv and the firing of the nick saban's successor
- 28:35Speaker 1: is good TV.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Well, I think more interesting would be Sark in Texas.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I mean, there is a chance Sark could get fired
- 28:42Speaker 2: performance-wise this year.
- 28:43Speaker 3: That's my bold prediction. Yeah, that they buy him out.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Texas, I'm not saying historically, but the brand is every
- 28:49Speaker 2: bit as big as Alabama right now.
- 28:50Speaker 3: It is the number one brand in college athletics. The
- 28:53Speaker 3: Athletic did a poll.
- 28:54Speaker 2: That's what's surprising. Why would you not have this discussion
- 28:57Speaker 2: more with those guys?
- 28:58Speaker 3: That's right.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Over Caleb or all you got to do is have
- 29:01Speaker 2: one guy that is, you know, got the facts and
- 29:03Speaker 2: they know what that buyout is. And everybody knows that
- 29:06Speaker 2: it's almost impossible to pay.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Well, and the buyout is 90% of DeBoer's remaining contract,
- 29:11Speaker 3: which that shrinks every day. Obviously Sark's buyout in season
- 29:15Speaker 3: is 60 million end of season is 55 million. So
- 29:18Speaker 3: it's still huge, still huge, but digestible. Yeah. As crazy
- 29:22Speaker 3: as that sounds with Texas money, 55 million is digestible,
- 29:25Speaker 3: but they're eight and four and nowhere close to the playoffs.
- 29:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Maybe you start thinking about that because you've run through
- 29:33Speaker 1: the Mannings here pretty good. I got some coaches here that,
- 29:38Speaker 1: just tell me, you think they won? one day coach
- 29:41Speaker 1: at a better job than they have right now or not, okay?
- 29:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I'll read them out to you. Better job or not
- 29:46Speaker 1: one day. In the SEC, Eli Drinkwitz, do you think
- 29:50Speaker 1: he ever leaves Missouri?
- 29:52Speaker 3: Better job or not? I think Drink's got the best
- 29:54Speaker 3: job he'll ever have.
- 29:59Speaker 2: To get a better job, I think he would have
- 30:01Speaker 2: to get to a college football playoff. I don't think
- 30:03Speaker 2: that happens this year. And maybe, I mean, he does
- 30:06Speaker 2: seem happy there. He's making a lot of money. What
- 30:08Speaker 2: is he making? Seven, eight million dollars?
- 30:09Speaker 3: Yeah, the problem is not, never making the playoffs is,
- 30:13Speaker 3: even in Missouri, that's eventually going to be like, you know,
- 30:16Speaker 3: what are we, you know, we're spinning wheels in the
- 30:17Speaker 3: mud here. Let's, let's buy him out and make a change.
- 30:20Speaker 3: Everybody wants to make a change, so.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I mean, and most people think the greatest coach in
- 30:23Speaker 2: Missouri history is Gary Pinkle. I don't think there's much
- 30:25Speaker 2: of a discussion there, so.
- 30:27Speaker 3: But he didn't do a lot, really. I mean, he
- 30:28Speaker 3: won a lot of games, but.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, playing for two SEC championships is pretty impressive.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I know people will point to the Old East.
- 30:35Speaker 3: And had them in a one-versus-two game with Kansas. I mean,
- 30:37Speaker 3: that's pretty crazy.
- 30:38Speaker 2: And had them in a two-versus-four game against Auburn.
- 30:41Speaker 3: Yeah. A winner, and he probably plays for the BCS.
- 30:44Speaker 2: With all that said, I think Drink, if he's wise–
- 30:48Speaker 2: you know, really gets, becomes a guy that the Missouri
- 30:52Speaker 2: fans love. And I think most Missouri fans really do
- 30:55Speaker 2: like him.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so.
- 30:56Speaker 2: And just stay there forever.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Clark Lee Vanderbilt.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Is he, I mean, he's, he's a Vandy guy and
- 31:01Speaker 1: he's doing great things there, but.
- 31:03Speaker 3: It's interesting. We've, we've discussed now I'll tell you, here's
- 31:06Speaker 3: a path to him doing this because we've discussed this
- 31:10Speaker 3: before that at the time, it looked like he had
- 31:12Speaker 3: the worst timing in the history of coaching decisions because
- 31:15Speaker 3: he Brian Kelly takes the LSU job the year after
- 31:18Speaker 3: Clark Lee takes the Vandy job. If Clark Lee is
- 31:20Speaker 3: still defensive coordinator at Vandy, Marcus Freeman's not your head
- 31:23Speaker 3: coach at Notre Dame. It's Clark Lee. If Marcus Freeman
- 31:27Speaker 3: ever decided to go to the NFL, and there continues
- 31:29Speaker 3: to be talk about that. He really says, no, I'm
- 31:32Speaker 3: not interested. He does, but there continues to be talk.
- 31:34Speaker 3: If he ever went to the NFL, I would think
- 31:36Speaker 3: the obvious choice for Notre Dame would be to look
- 31:39Speaker 3: at Clark Lee, a guy that head coached there and
- 31:40Speaker 3: is going to Vandy and had success. I think Kalen
- 31:42Speaker 3: DeBoer would be in the mix, too.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I would.
- 31:46Speaker 3: No disrespect to Kelly DeBoer, I'd hire Clark Lee before him.
- 31:49Speaker 3: If I'm Notre Dame. I'm not saying any job, but
- 31:51Speaker 3: if I'm Notre Dame.
- 31:52Speaker 2: If you're Clark Lee, I think he's happy at Vanderbilt,
- 31:54Speaker 2: but what you've got to figure out is, is Vanderbilt
- 31:56Speaker 2: ever going to go back to a 3-4-5 win team?
- 32:00Speaker 2: Because if they do, Clark Lee is expendable at that point.
- 32:04Speaker 3: If you're wearing the USC rollback hoodie there, if it
- 32:08Speaker 3: did go down with Lincoln Riley and they looked at
- 32:10Speaker 3: Clark Lee, would you be excited about that?
- 32:14Speaker 2: Excited, no. But the guy knows how to build a program.
- 32:18Speaker 2: I mean, the culture seems really, really good.
- 32:19Speaker 3: It's funny. I thought that's the way you would answer it.
- 32:21Speaker 3: It's like, I know he's a good coach. He knows
- 32:23Speaker 3: how to build a program. But would I be excited
- 32:25Speaker 3: to get him? No.
- 32:26Speaker 2: I'd be excited about Kalen DeBoer.
- 32:28Speaker 3: In what world do we live in, though, that the
- 32:31Speaker 3: best coach in Vanderbilt history, a guy that's actually winning
- 32:33Speaker 3: games at Vanderbilt, had him on the precipice of a
- 32:35Speaker 3: college football playoff, and you're not excited to get him?
- 32:38Speaker 2: That's kind of crazy. I don't think people give Clark
- 32:40Speaker 2: Lee the credit. They give it to Diego Pavia, right?
- 32:42Speaker 2: A lot of them give it to Jerry Kill, too,
- 32:44Speaker 2: which is crazy.
- 32:46Speaker 3: I would say Diego Pavia, by the way, in my
- 32:48Speaker 3: algorithm this morning. Welcome.
- 32:51Speaker 2: He.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Is he not in the 5-5, by the way?
- 32:55Speaker 3: He was. Absolutely. He could be, yeah, if he wanted to.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Because he's out at Baltimore.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Diego Pavia is hinting that he may consider going down
- 33:04Speaker 1: the WWE path.
- 33:06Speaker 5: Okay.
- 33:07Speaker 3: That dude's barely 5'9. What's he got to do in
- 33:10Speaker 3: the WWE? Whatever. I mean, he would be pretty entertaining.
- 33:15Speaker 3: I guess.
- 33:16Speaker 2: I think Sporting State might have reached out to him.
- 33:18Speaker 3: Okay, good.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe.
- 33:19Speaker 3: In that case, I love Diego. Yeah. As a weekly
- 33:23Speaker 3: guest or his own show? I don't know all the details.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Okay. Hey, but I'll tell you, how good would he
- 33:29Speaker 2: be at tailgates around the SEC?
- 33:30Speaker 3: It would be really good. It would be really good.
- 33:34Speaker 3: What about Red Lashley at SMU? I think he's got
- 33:37Speaker 3: another stop in him. Now, SMU can make that an
- 33:39Speaker 3: attractive enough job to keep him. They've got the money
- 33:41Speaker 3: to do it. Dallas is a great place. He's already
- 33:44Speaker 3: been to the playoff there.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't figure this out because I would say this.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Last year I would have said Kyle Winningham is going
- 33:50Speaker 2: to be at Utah forever. I would have said Matt
- 33:52Speaker 2: Campbell is going to be in Ames forever. So like
- 33:56Speaker 2: these are really difficult questions because there's so much money
- 33:59Speaker 2: out there now. And if you get in a comfortable
- 34:00Speaker 2: situation and you have opportunities, which Matt Campbell, again, had
- 34:04Speaker 2: an opportunity to get to a college football playoff, but
- 34:07Speaker 2: decided to take a bigger, more prestigious job.
- 34:09Speaker 3: We played a soundbite earlier from a Dabo Swinney that's
- 34:12Speaker 3: tired of the way college football is. If Dabo retired,
- 34:16Speaker 3: I think Tony Elliott's your obvious choice there, but that's
- 34:18Speaker 3: the type of job I could see Rhett Lashley getting.
- 34:20Speaker 3: But is it easier to win at SMU or Clemson?
- 34:21Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 34:22Speaker 3: That's what I was about to say. You're in conference there,
- 34:24Speaker 3: and is that an obvious– I can't believe I'm about
- 34:26Speaker 3: to ask this question. Is it an obvious upgrade going
- 34:29Speaker 3: from SMU to Clemson right now?
- 34:31Speaker 1: In this era of college football, and I've told this
- 34:34Speaker 1: to people who work in coaching before, the first thing
- 34:37Speaker 1: I would look at is how easy is it to
- 34:39Speaker 1: have NIL money?
- 34:41Speaker 3: Forget the history.
- 34:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:43Speaker 1: How easy is it to have NIL money? I mean,
- 34:46Speaker 1: we're never going to beat Alabama's history.
- 34:48Speaker 3: But how easy is it to.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Get NIL money in Alabama or is it to get
- 34:52Speaker 1: NIL money in Michigan?
- 34:53Speaker 3: We live in a world when Michigan fired Sharon Moore,
- 34:56Speaker 3: if they had said, boy, this Curt Signetti guy, do
- 34:59Speaker 3: you think he obviously takes that job? No.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Well, I was going to go back to Michigan. Let's
- 35:03Speaker 2: go back to what we're saying. Let's go back to
- 35:05Speaker 2: the DeBoer scenario. Cignetti has roots to Alabama. He's coached
- 35:09Speaker 2: here before.
- 35:09Speaker 3: That's right.
- 35:10Speaker 2: DeBoer takes USC. Alabama offers the Indiana coach the head job.
- 35:15Speaker 3: I don't think he leaves. I don't think he would.
- 35:17Speaker 3: That's the world we live in. I don't know if
- 35:18Speaker 3: he would have taken the Michigan job, and I don't
- 35:21Speaker 3: know in that scenario if he takes the Bama job.
- 35:23Speaker 3: We're in an upside-down world in football. Kalani Satake at BYU.
- 35:28Speaker 3: Do you think he'll stay there? It just feels like
- 35:32Speaker 3: such a fit.
- 35:32Speaker 2: That's his school, and I think they've got money hidden somewhere.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 2: And they'll spend it on a need-to-spend basis.
- 35:40Speaker 3: And they're private, so what he gets reported as making,
- 35:43Speaker 3: is that exactly what he makes? I'm with Lance. Money's
- 35:46Speaker 3: not going to be an issue for him. He got
- 35:48Speaker 3: a new contract.
- 35:49Speaker 2: He loves Provo.
- 35:50Speaker 3: I think he loves Provo. I think they're good enough
- 35:52Speaker 3: that they can contend and win the Big 12 some
- 35:54Speaker 3: and get in the playoff. Feels like Kenny Dillingham may
- 35:56Speaker 3: have missed his window.
- 35:57Speaker 2: I agree.
- 35:59Speaker 3: I agree. I mean, I don't know what jobs he
- 36:01Speaker 3: could have gotten coming off that playoff run, but he
- 36:03Speaker 3: probably should have taken them if he wants to leave Tempe.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Yeah, but again, that's not a bad job.
- 36:07Speaker 1: No, and if he's found that guy, apparently he's found
- 36:11Speaker 1: a guy to write a big check because their NIL
- 36:13Speaker 1: spending has gone up. Maybe he's where he wants to be.
- 36:17Speaker 1: All right, one more segment to go here on our
- 36:20Speaker 1: next round version of Sport and State today brought to
- 36:22Speaker 1: you by our friends at Hard Rock Bets when we
- 36:24Speaker 1: come back. TV ratings from week zero, surprisingly a little
- 36:30Speaker 1: low in my books, but people are celebrating that. And
- 36:34Speaker 1: some more college football. It's all straight ahead here on
- 36:36Speaker 1: the next round on Hard Rock Bets Sporting State. Are
- 36:40Speaker 1: we just going to call it fifth year senior? Because,
- 36:42Speaker 1: you know, it's five for five from now on. So
- 36:46Speaker 1: you have a freshman, a sophomore, a junior and a senior.
- 36:49Speaker 1: We don't really The fifth year guys, we're going to
- 36:52Speaker 1: call them fifth year seniors? Or do we need to
- 36:54Speaker 1: go with another name to go with freshmen, sophomore, juniors,
- 36:57Speaker 1: and seniors?
- 36:57Speaker 3: Super senior? Super senior. Yeah.
- 37:01Speaker 4: They've been listing them on rosters now as GR, graduate.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Graduate. Because a super senior would be somebody who's like
- 37:08Speaker 3: repeating a grade. In high school, at least, that's what
- 37:11Speaker 3: we called those people.
- 37:12Speaker 2: You called them that? That's what they were called.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I think graduates is misleading, too, because I would believe
- 37:18Speaker 1: there are some players who don't have degrees who are
- 37:21Speaker 1: playing in their fifth year. I mean, obviously some, like
- 37:23Speaker 1: Austin Mack at Alabama already has his degree. He's graduated
- 37:28Speaker 1: before the season started, and he's got a couple of
- 37:30Speaker 1: years of eligibility left.
- 37:31Speaker 3: That's when they get to wear that badge. But I
- 37:32Speaker 3: understand what you're saying, that.
- 37:35Speaker 4: All I know is when I looked at Indiana's roster
- 37:37Speaker 4: to put that graphic together last year about all the
- 37:39Speaker 4: players they had that were super old, had like 20-something
- 37:43Speaker 4: players with GR as their class level.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Well, you know, LT makes a point about how old
- 37:47Speaker 1: this Virginia team is. They've got 13 players with seven or.
- 37:51Speaker 3: More years of experience.
- 37:53Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Six or seven? Six or seven years of experience, 13 players.
- 37:57Speaker 3: I mean, that really is crazy.
- 37:59Speaker 4: I guess they got grandfathered into the five-year-old.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Who knows? Grandfathered. It's probably a bad term.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Well, we got Nico's birthday coming up today. You brought
- 38:07Speaker 2: him up earlier in our first segment. He's 21 today.
- 38:12Speaker 2: I mean, these guys have got to be 25.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Yeah, they've got to be, just with the age of
- 38:17Speaker 1: leaving high school. More college football after Brownie tells us
- 38:20Speaker 1: about the great wear at XXXY.
- 38:22Speaker 3: It is a tee that launched a movement. XXXY is
- 38:26Speaker 3: Jennifer Say. She was the president at Levi. And rather
- 38:30Speaker 3: than say something she didn't believe in, she decided to leave.
- 38:35Speaker 3: And she launched her own brand when she left. And again,
- 38:38Speaker 3: that brand, it has led to a movement. XXXY clothing.
- 38:42Speaker 3: And you can get it for yourself right now. Online. XXXY. Athletics.
- 38:48Speaker 3: That is XXXYAthletics.com. Here's their mission. Empower female athletes and

- 39:07Speaker 3: the tees and the trucker hats there, but all the
- 39:09Speaker 3: XXXY gear is for men and women. They've got performance tops, tanks,

- 39:20Speaker 3: men's and women's clothing there at XXXY. It's worn by

- 39:39Speaker 3: I think I'm right about this.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Louisville versus Ole Miss is the only ranked versus ranked
- 39:44Speaker 1: game we have this opening weekend.
- 39:45Speaker 3: You are right.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Aaron McClain's right, though. Clemson probably should be ranked.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Clemson and LSU is the marquee game. Here's Lane Kiffin
- 39:53Speaker 1: on being the marquee game.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Of the weekend.
- 39:58Speaker 6: It's awesome having College Game Day here. I think that
- 40:00Speaker 6: speaks a lot of where LSU is as a program
- 40:06Speaker 6: and how it's viewed. And that's really exciting. It's what
- 40:10Speaker 6: kids want. They want to be the national game of
- 40:13Speaker 6: the week and they want college game day to cover them.
- 40:15Speaker 6: So I'm really excited for that part. But again, this
- 40:19Speaker 6: will be about preparation, not hype. There's so much hype
- 40:22Speaker 6: into this game, so much excitement from our fan base
- 40:27Speaker 6: to watch us. Probably that same excitement for everybody else
- 40:30Speaker 6: in the country to root the other way against us.
- 40:34Speaker 6: And just a lot of work went into it. It's
- 40:37Speaker 6: been whatever, seven, eight months of getting to this point.
- 40:41Speaker 6: And I always look at the game really as like
- 40:43Speaker 6: a performance. And the players do all this work. The
- 40:47Speaker 6: coaches do all this work to make sure they put
- 40:49Speaker 6: the best performance out there for our people and our fans.
- 40:54Speaker 2: I think, unfortunately, for people that are pulling against Lane
- 40:56Speaker 2: in this game, I think he's going to have this
- 41:00Speaker 2: team really ready.
- 41:01Speaker 1: So you're not expecting any kind of a letdown from
- 41:04Speaker 1: LSU going into this contest?
- 41:05Speaker 2: Well, the only letdown would be if Clemson is better
- 41:09Speaker 2: than advertised, which they could be.
- 41:11Speaker 3: Which is why I'm a little high on Clemson. I
- 41:13Speaker 3: think Clemson, like we talked about with Eric, has been
- 41:16Speaker 3: laying in the weeds. Everybody's focused on LSU.
- 41:18Speaker 2: And I told you, and Dunaway will love this, I
- 41:21Speaker 2: took Clemson in our draft last night. I got them late.
- 41:23Speaker 3: I got to pull for Dabo this year.
- 41:26Speaker 2: But I actually went through their schedule multiple times. I
- 41:30Speaker 2: think they're 10-2 this year. I really do. And I
- 41:32Speaker 2: think they lose this game, but I think they end
- 41:34Speaker 2: up 10-2.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Brown and Brooks have them in the upset alert this week.
- 41:39Speaker 1: We showed you those yesterday. I sort of blame this
- 41:43Speaker 1: a little bit on the growing Kirk Cignetti effect and
- 41:48Speaker 1: the lack of college football playoff committee strength of schedule dynamic,
- 41:54Speaker 1: not putting enough into the strength of schedule. This week
- 41:58Speaker 1: one is not littered with great games. And that feels
- 42:02Speaker 1: to be, I think more and more people are going
- 42:05Speaker 1: to Cignetti plans. I mean, we've lost some games that
- 42:08Speaker 1: were supposed to be big here. They've been changed out.
- 42:12Speaker 1: You've got Alabama, who under Nick Saban usually had a
- 42:14Speaker 1: marquee opener. I would say 75% of the time they
- 42:18Speaker 1: had one of those neutral site off-campus games against a
- 42:21Speaker 1: marquee brand. You have it nowhere on the schedule except
- 42:26Speaker 1: a couple of games. Wisconsin-Notre Dame, when it was Book
- 42:31Speaker 1: to play at Lambeau Field. That was supposed to be
- 42:33Speaker 1: a big game. Yeah, I mean, you can't help the
- 42:35Speaker 1: fact Notre Dame agreed to do this. You can't help
- 42:38Speaker 1: the fact that Luke Fickle can't get it going in Wisconsin.
- 42:40Speaker 1: That's not Notre Dame's fault. But let me put this
- 42:42Speaker 1: perspective for you. Okay, let me put this perspective. If
- 42:45Speaker 1: you forgot.
- 42:46Speaker 3: That football is on anything other than ESPN, your ESPN
- 42:51Speaker 3: lineup on week one This is your ESPN lineup. It's
- 42:56Speaker 3: the state of Texas, by the way. The worldwide leader
- 42:58Speaker 3: in sports, guys. It's not Longhorn Network. It's ESPN. Oregon
- 43:02Speaker 3: State at Houston at 11. Texas State at Texas at 230.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Missouri State at Texas A & M at 6. And
- 43:13Speaker 3: the only good game in all of that, UCLA at
- 43:15Speaker 3: Cal at 930. Yeah. I mean, that is a terrible ESPN.
- 43:19Speaker 3: That sounds like, if I told you, that's ESPNU's lineup.
- 43:23Speaker 3: On week three, you'd be like, okay, that's a pretty
- 43:25Speaker 3: good ESPNU lineup. That's main ESPN.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Let me give you two games that just show you
- 43:30Speaker 1: where we are in college football. That my grandfather, even
- 43:33Speaker 1: my dad, who both have passed away now, they wouldn't
- 43:36Speaker 1: believe this if I told them. That UCLA and California
- 43:41Speaker 1: would be playing each other in Berkeley in a matchup
- 43:44Speaker 1: between the Big Ten and the ACC.
- 43:46Speaker 3: That's right.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Meanwhile, Boise State would be playing in Oregon. And the
- 43:52Speaker 1: team that's wearing the Pac-12 patch is Boise State, not Oregon,
- 43:56Speaker 1: who's wearing a Big Ten patch.
- 43:57Speaker 3: Yeah, it's confusing. Is that not ironic? Yeah. Dig up
- 44:00Speaker 3: our grandfathers or they would not know what they're watching.
- 44:02Speaker 2: I went through this, though, talking about how bad the
- 44:04Speaker 2: games are.
- 44:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:06Speaker 2: 21-plus spreads right now. How many do you think there
- 44:09Speaker 2: are on this first card? Now, again, there's a lot
- 44:12Speaker 2: of FBS, FCS.
- 44:14Speaker 3: How many games do we have? I would say it's
- 44:16Speaker 3: over 50%. Oh, it's over 50%, yeah.
- 44:18Speaker 2: I mean, the hard number I've got right now on
- 44:21Speaker 2: my count is 40.
- 44:21Speaker 5: 40?
- 44:21Speaker 3: Three touchdown or more point spreads at Hard Rock Bat. Again,
- 44:30Speaker 3: it's why.
- 44:30Speaker 2: Will we see one of these 21-point underdogs win the
- 44:33Speaker 2: game outright?
- 44:34Speaker 3: I would love for you to tell me which one.
- 44:35Speaker 3: That's why earlier in my storyline, it's a few close
- 44:38Speaker 3: games in week one. And I don't want this to
- 44:40Speaker 3: be right, but I just look at what Lance said,
- 44:42Speaker 3: and I'm like, we have got a full slate of
- 44:46Speaker 3: teams that are three touchdown favorites. You know what you
- 44:48Speaker 3: get all the time when you start talking about point spreads,
- 44:51Speaker 3: you're like, You get a lot of Appalachian State and
- 44:54Speaker 3: Michigan back in the day, but really you get Stanford
- 44:56Speaker 3: and Jim Harbaugh beating Pete Carroll's USC team. What was that, 45?
- 45:00Speaker 2: They were 41-point favorites. And I still, you know, Tevita
- 45:03Speaker 2: Pritchard was the quarterback in that game. I think he
- 45:06Speaker 2: was down to the third-string quarterback. Harbaugh was your coach.
- 45:09Speaker 3: Made no sense.
- 45:10Speaker 2: I remember, you know, we were doing the show at jocks.
- 45:13Speaker 2: I guess we weren't doing one together. You guys were
- 45:15Speaker 2: on 690. I was doing one with Ian at that point.
- 45:18Speaker 2: But I remember Harbaugh coming on the morning show before us.
- 45:22Speaker 2: That week of USC.
- 45:23Speaker 3: Oh, really? Yeah.
- 45:25Speaker 2: I mean, imagine getting Jim Harbaugh on before he plays
- 45:28Speaker 2: USC now.
- 45:30Speaker 3: There probably was not a long line. In Birmingham, Alabama.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Somebody wants to talk to the Stanford coach who's a
- 45:35Speaker 3: 45-point dog at USC.
- 45:38Speaker 2: That's still, to me, the biggest upset I've seen in
- 45:40Speaker 2: football history.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it made no sense whatsoever.
- 45:45Speaker 2: I just remember watching that game and just thinking, okay.
- 45:49Speaker 2: There's no way they're going to win. Man, this has
- 45:52Speaker 2: gotten to halftime. It's gotten to the third quarter.
- 45:55Speaker 3: So Stanford is easily covered, but USC is going to
- 45:57Speaker 3: escape with a win.
- 45:58Speaker 2: They'll find a way to win this game.
- 46:00Speaker 3: I know some of these are off-the-board games because this
- 46:03Speaker 3: was technically a 1-double-A team back then, but do you
- 46:07Speaker 3: remember what a suggested Michigan-Appalachian State point spread was that year?
- 46:12Speaker 2: I don't think it was as big as you would
- 46:13Speaker 2: think because Appalachian State had a lot of.
- 46:16Speaker 3: That was a good 1AA program. They called it 1AA
- 46:19Speaker 3: back then before it was XCS.
- 46:20Speaker 2: I want to recall it was like 27.5. I mean,
- 46:21Speaker 2: that's still pretty crazy.
- 46:23Speaker 3: It's still big, yeah. Especially when it's two different divisions.
- 46:25Speaker 2: I think Michigan was number three.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, yeah. It was the– I'll just never forget
- 46:30Speaker 3: the fact it was the first game ever on the
- 46:32Speaker 3: Big Ten Network, and a lot of people were not
- 46:34Speaker 3: getting the Big Ten Network then. So you were wholly
- 46:37Speaker 3: dependent on the cut-ins– to see how this thing was
- 46:40Speaker 3: going down. Is the Big Ten Network that old? Yeah,
- 46:44Speaker 3: that was the very first game of the Big Ten Network.
- 46:47Speaker 3: Because I can't remember the game I was actually watching.
- 46:49Speaker 3: I remember more of the game I wasn't watching. I
- 46:52Speaker 3: can't remember the game I was watching, but they cut in,
- 46:55Speaker 3: and it's like middle-late fourth quarter, and Appalachian State's got
- 46:58Speaker 3: the lead, and you're like, holy crap. How in the
- 47:01Speaker 3: world is Michigan losing to Appalachian State? And then they
- 47:03Speaker 3: do another cut in, and it's a little bit later.
- 47:05Speaker 3: It feels like I was watching a Sean McDonough game.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Could have been. Honest to goodness, cannot remember the game
- 47:10Speaker 3: I was watching. But then I remember that last cut
- 47:12Speaker 3: in when they blocked that field goal. And you could
- 47:16Speaker 3: not believe what you were watching.
- 47:17Speaker 2: And remember the dude tried to take it to the house.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Yeah, he did, rather than just go down.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Almost got there. I know our buddy Charlie Vettel, our
- 47:24Speaker 2: big Michigan fan, is loving this discussion right now.
- 47:26Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean, you watch them block that field
- 47:28Speaker 3: goal on that cut in, and you're like, What have
- 47:30Speaker 3: I just watched here?
- 47:31Speaker 1: To your point, though, Stanford and Jim Harbaugh beating Pete
- 47:34Speaker 1: Carroll's USC was technically a bigger upset.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Oh, by point spread, yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 2: I mean, that would be Arkansas losing to North Alabama
- 47:42Speaker 2: this week. Just put some of these in perspective. That's 40-and-a-half.
- 47:45Speaker 2: That would be Indiana losing to North Texas. Do you
- 47:48Speaker 2: think people would love that?
- 47:49Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, they would. It would be Missouri State beating
- 47:52Speaker 3: Texas A & M. 41-and-a-half is what I saw that.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Yeah, so, I mean, that's kind of the realm this
- 47:58Speaker 2: is in, so. I mean, those kind of upsets seem impossible.
- 48:01Speaker 3: But I think if most people, if you say, what
- 48:02Speaker 3: is the biggest upset in college history, they're going to
- 48:04Speaker 3: say Appalachian State over Michigan. Not because of the point spread,
- 48:07Speaker 3: but because of, like you said, Michigan was number three
- 48:10Speaker 3: and Appalachian State was an FCS team.
- 48:11Speaker 2: That cost USC a national championship.
- 48:15Speaker 3: Yes. Oh, the Stanford one. I know. I'm well aware
- 48:18Speaker 3: of that. But I just think perspective-wise, a lot of
- 48:21Speaker 3: people don't look at point spreads when they say that,
- 48:22Speaker 3: but perspective-wise... Just the way that whole thing went down.
- 48:26Speaker 2: You even wonder in a 12-team playoff, like, if USC
- 48:29Speaker 2: doesn't get in because of a loss like that that late.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that was a terrible loss. But see,
- 48:34Speaker 3: when was that? What part of the year was that?
- 48:36Speaker 3: Was it November? What year was that?
- 48:39Speaker 2: 2007.
- 48:39Speaker 3: So that was the year.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Because I was watching Saturday Down South last night, or
- 48:44Speaker 1: Saturday in the South, whatever the documentary is on ESPN.
- 48:47Speaker 3: It's been out for years now. But there was the
- 48:50Speaker 3: episode where the 2007 season was part of it.
- 48:55Speaker 1: And, you know, LSU had the big win over Florida
- 48:59Speaker 1: and Tim Tebow and then the National Champions. And then
- 49:01Speaker 1: they went and lost to Kentucky in triple overtime. And
- 49:04Speaker 1: then they've worked their way back into position. And then
- 49:06Speaker 1: they lose to Arkansas in triple overtime.
- 49:08Speaker 3: Last week of the season, lose to Arkansas. And they
- 49:09Speaker 3: thought everything had changed. And then they're in Atlanta.
- 49:13Speaker 1: And we all run in for that news conference that
- 49:15Speaker 1: was there before the game. Les Miles called a news
- 49:18Speaker 1: conference because Herbst I was wrong it was October okay
- 49:22Speaker 1: yeah but still it's 2007 Herb Street had said on
- 49:25Speaker 1: game day of championship Saturday that his sources were telling
- 49:29Speaker 1: him that Les Miles was going to be the next
- 49:31Speaker 1: coach at Michigan and so then Les Miles says hey
- 49:35Speaker 1: give me a news conference before We even start warm-ups.
- 49:37Speaker 1: And so everybody runs in there, sets up their cameras.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Before the SEC championship game.
- 49:41Speaker 3: It says, you know, I'm going to be the coach
- 49:44Speaker 3: at LSU.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Have a great day.
- 49:45Speaker 3: Have a great day. Have a great day.
- 49:46Speaker 1: And then they go out and they win and they
- 49:48Speaker 1: go on and get a chance to play for the
- 49:49Speaker 1: national championship. Because I think USC rallied. Didn't they end
- 49:53Speaker 1: up losing to UCLA at the end?
- 49:55Speaker 2: No, that was 2006. 2007, they lost at Oregon. So
- 50:00Speaker 2: they lost two games.
- 50:01Speaker 3: Stanford at home and at Oregon? Yeah.
- 50:03Speaker 2: This box score, I'm just looking at it. Tevita Pritchard
- 50:05Speaker 2: was 11 of 30 in the Coliseum, and they win
- 50:07Speaker 2: the game. Oh, wow. 24-23. John David Booty, four picks.
- 50:12Speaker 2: I knew he turned the ball over. I didn't know
- 50:13Speaker 2: it was that much. I mean, Stanford averaged 2.2 yards
- 50:15Speaker 2: per carry, 86 rushing yards per. Tevita Pritchard was 11
- 50:19Speaker 2: of 30, and they won the game.
- 50:21Speaker 3: How'd they win the game? How'd they score enough points?
- 50:23Speaker 2: It was the four turnovers.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Even with four turnovers. What was the final score of
- 50:28Speaker 3: that game?
- 50:29Speaker 2: 24-23.
- 50:31Speaker 3: Bring it full circle, Jim.
- 50:32Speaker 4: It was West Virginia losing to Pittsburgh that day that
- 50:35Speaker 4: got LSU into the national championship.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, yeah, full circle with a rich-rod game.
- 50:39Speaker 1: Well, I just remember everybody, because I remember staying up
- 50:42Speaker 1: at night because SportsCenter, there were coaches.
- 50:46Speaker 3: Pete Carroll was on.
- 50:48Speaker 1: There were coaches, they were getting live on phone interviews
- 50:51Speaker 1: to plea for their case, why they should be in.
- 50:54Speaker 3: You know, we should be in, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Because back then, the AP poll, the coaches poll, and
- 51:01Speaker 1: the computers made the BCS. And so coaches were basically calling,
- 51:06Speaker 1: SIDs were calling sports centers saying, hey, Pete will come
- 51:10Speaker 1: on with you guys, or Rich Rod will come on
- 51:11Speaker 1: with you guys. And they just were one coach after
- 51:14Speaker 1: the other where they were just jumping on pleading their
- 51:16Speaker 1: case on why they deserve to be in. And LSU
- 51:19Speaker 1: ended up getting there against Oklahoma, who was easily the
- 51:22Speaker 1: number one team.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Ohio State. Ohio State was number one. Jim Trestle's team, right?
- 51:27Speaker 3: What a wild season that was.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Back to Troy Smith, the last Buckeye to win.
- 51:32Speaker 3: In the playoff era, we can't have that season again.
- 51:34Speaker 3: I mean, that's the only time. we will ever have
- 51:36Speaker 3: a season like that.
- 51:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:38Speaker 3: Because in the playoff era, all those teams make the
- 51:40Speaker 3: playoffs and they just play it out on the field.
- 51:42Speaker 3: But it was a constant checkers game.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Even the bigger upset and the loss to Oregon, USC
- 51:47Speaker 1: would still comfortably be in.
- 51:48Speaker 2: Stanford 5 of 17 on third downs in that game.
- 51:51Speaker 2: The ultimate equalizer turnovers, five turnovers for USC.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Were any of those four interceptions returned to the house
- 51:58Speaker 1: where they picked sixes?
- 51:58Speaker 3: Had to be.
- 51:59Speaker 2: I don't remember that, but had to be.
- 52:02Speaker 1: That's the next round today presented by Hard Rock Bets
- 52:05Speaker 1: here on Sporting State.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Again, a new link will go out. Go check it out.
- 52:09Speaker 3: We continue over on the Next Round YouTube platform.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Two more hours of our show as we talk a
- 52:15Speaker 1: little bit more SEC football and getting ready for the
- 52:17Speaker 1: big one in Atlanta, Baylor and Auburn. Thanks for being
- 52:20Speaker 1: with us today, folks. We'll see you on the other side.
