- 2:07Speaker 1: for showing up and talking to us a bit.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I'm excited to be here. I'm always loved Minnesota. I
- 2:14Speaker 2: did my last comedy special there. I always love playing
- 2:17Speaker 2: up there, and my football team has broken my heart
- 2:21Speaker 2: so much that the Vikings are You know how you
- 2:23Speaker 2: always have to have like the second team because I'm
- 2:28Speaker 2: a Falcons fan. I grew up in Atlanta. But they've
- 2:32Speaker 2: gutted me so bad that the Vikings are my fallback team.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And my youngest daughter married into a family of insane scoldiers,
- 2:43Speaker 2: so you guys are my backup team. So this, actually,
- 2:48Speaker 2: this weekend's kind of hard for me.
- 2:50Speaker 1: It's funny because you would think someone who's had their
- 2:53Speaker 1: heart broken so much would choose an organization that doesn't
- 2:58Speaker 1: constantly break their fans' hearts. You could have gone with
- 3:02Speaker 1: you could have gone with the Chiefs. You came over
- 3:04Speaker 1: to another damaged, scared fan base.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Oh dude, my son in law, his name is Brendan,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and we talk about this all the time. I'm, like
- 3:14Speaker 2: I said, next to the Falcons. You guys find a
- 3:18Speaker 2: way to lose in the most imaginative leg, and the
- 3:22Speaker 2: Vikes never lose until within the last sixty seconds. Yes,
- 3:28Speaker 2: it's creative, hey, but ten and two right now, right? Yeah?
- 3:33Speaker 1: So it's weird, it's and it's funny until you win
- 3:38Speaker 1: the big one for the first time, which neither of
- 3:40Speaker 1: us have experienced. I think you don't trust anything, and
- 3:44Speaker 1: so even at ten and two, you feel this interesting.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I was home over Thanksgiving, spending time. I was at
- 3:50Speaker 1: the game on Sunday. You feel this odd combo energy
- 3:55Speaker 1: of this is so great. Oh no, how's it going
- 3:58Speaker 1: to end? It just permeas it's through people.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Well see, I'm that way, Like I'm a Georgia Bulldogs fan.
- 4:06Speaker 2: So we we had not won the Natty since nineteen
- 4:10Speaker 2: eighty with herschel Walk, forty one years. And you know,
- 4:14Speaker 2: then we played Bamman like seventeen and they in overtime
- 4:20Speaker 2: beat us, and then the Falcons turn around twenty eight
- 4:24Speaker 2: to three and lose. I get it. It's like, so
- 4:29Speaker 2: I actually I was not going to go to the Bulldogs.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I'm like, all right, I've wasted too much money going
- 4:35Speaker 2: to these games. But in twenty one when they played
- 4:37Speaker 2: in Indianapolis, and then like the week of the game,
- 4:41Speaker 2: me and my brother and my two buddies couldn't stand it.
- 4:43Speaker 2: And so we drive up to Indianapolis and we win
- 4:46Speaker 2: the Natty and I told my I called my son
- 4:49Speaker 2: in law. I said, it's worth it for all the heartbreak,
- 4:52Speaker 2: this may be the greatest moment of my life. And
- 4:56Speaker 2: you guys, see, I'm old enough to remember as a
- 4:59Speaker 2: kid the Purple people eaters and it was like, you
- 5:03Speaker 2: guys just kept going to the Super Bowl and could
- 5:07Speaker 2: never win it, and then I was it ninety nine.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Into ninety nine when you guys, when you guys crushed
- 5:15Speaker 1: my soul as a child.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Well, we had to come up there and play you there,
- 5:21Speaker 2: and I thought, we're going to get our teeth kicked in.
- 5:24Speaker 2: There's so much better than us.
- 5:27Speaker 1: That's what. But that's what I've been telling everybody this
- 5:29Speaker 1: year when they worry that the egos are the Lions,
- 5:32Speaker 1: I go get you just never know in one game
- 5:35Speaker 1: if you're if you're some version of good, you just
- 5:38Speaker 1: never know.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah, especially you know, that's kind of what I'm going
- 5:43Speaker 2: through in college this season with Georgia, because they can
- 5:46Speaker 2: look unbeatable and they can look horrible. Because we were
- 5:50Speaker 2: talking about it and I thought, you know, the Lions
- 5:53Speaker 2: are playing so good that it's probably going to end
- 5:57Speaker 2: up being the Falcons and the Vikes in the playoffs.
- 6:04Speaker 2: In the playoffs, and so Arthur Blank invited me and
- 6:08Speaker 2: my son in law, Brendan down to watch the game.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And he's so funny because he's sitting there at the
- 6:13Speaker 2: I mean, we're in Arthur Sweet on the fifty yard
- 6:15Speaker 2: line and he's watching the bikes on his phone between
- 6:18Speaker 2: his legs, and so I'm like, dude, let's go, let's
- 6:25Speaker 2: go watch Kirk and because this is gonna end. God,
- 6:29Speaker 2: we played awful last week like the Chargers, and just
- 6:33Speaker 2: just so now I don't know the Bucks are on
- 6:36Speaker 2: a roll. So maybe you guys end up with the Bucks.
- 6:39Speaker 2: But what do you guys have won like five straight.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I really like this football team and I like Darno.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You know, when Matt Ryan when we were going through
- 6:50Speaker 2: all that and he was kind of the guy. I
- 6:53Speaker 2: always thought, this guy hasn't shown what he can do.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I think he's better. Uh, and obviously he is.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I mean, well and we've you know, the interesting thing
- 7:05Speaker 1: that's happened is with you know, now Daniel Jones has
- 7:09Speaker 1: come to Minnesota and you this when he signed. You
- 7:13Speaker 1: saw these former players and analysts do this thing where
- 7:17Speaker 1: they all go, oh, they were commending Daniel Jones on
- 7:20Speaker 1: the right choice. And to me, what that felt like
- 7:25Speaker 1: was this coach, this Kevin O'Connell, has created an environment
- 7:31Speaker 1: and has a reputation where if players want to be
- 7:34Speaker 1: I mean, you know, this is a Bulldog fan where
- 7:36Speaker 1: it's such a heavily you're you're in the You're you're
- 7:38Speaker 1: in a recruiting competition as much as you are in
- 7:41Speaker 1: a football competition. And if players want to be in
- 7:44Speaker 1: your culture and in your environment, you know, so to
- 7:47Speaker 1: see Sam succeed the way he is and then see
- 7:49Speaker 1: another guy who got a raw deal somewhere people you know,
- 7:52Speaker 1: he thinks try to come here, I think that's an
- 7:56Speaker 1: If you're a fan, you look at that and you
- 7:57Speaker 1: get pretty excited about that. As weird as it sounds.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I mean, Koc is like a such a good quarterback,
- 8:04Speaker 2: and so when Sam went to you guys, I thought, well,
- 8:08Speaker 2: at least he's going to get a fair shot with
- 8:10Speaker 2: a good team to see if And I think he's
- 8:14Speaker 2: been fabulous this year, absolutely, you know, when you look
- 8:18Speaker 2: at what it did for y'all, freeing all the cap
- 8:21Speaker 2: space when Kirk left, and then you put it on defense,
- 8:25Speaker 2: and now all of a sudden, you're suffocating quarterbacks. And
- 8:29Speaker 2: I'm like, and I've always liked Kirk. I put Brendan
- 8:36Speaker 2: told me years ago, he said, do you know Kirk Cousins.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Every year his wife buys him a you might be
- 8:41Speaker 2: a redneck if page a day calendar. That's his one
- 8:46Speaker 2: thing that he has to have in his Christmas stocking.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And so I always like Kirk because of that. But
- 8:55Speaker 2: we spend a lot of money, you know, and what
- 8:59Speaker 2: Sam's like ten MILLI a year and I think Kirk
- 9:02Speaker 2: like thirty five or something.
- 9:05Speaker 1: So yeah, uh, it's ultimately as much as you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: you want sports to be about the competition, and it is,
- 9:13Speaker 1: but you also have this piece of you that goes
- 9:15Speaker 1: It's kind of an interesting math equation. You know, how
- 9:19Speaker 1: much how much better do you guys perform than what
- 9:22Speaker 1: you pay them? And you get a rookie on a
- 9:24Speaker 1: rookie day. It's really it really that's where you start going, Oh,
- 9:27Speaker 1: some of these gms, either they're lucky or they're good,
- 9:30Speaker 1: but when they hit on the math equation, it gets
- 9:32Speaker 1: really fun.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Well, and then you have the thing because I know,
- 9:37Speaker 2: both of us sweat out draft night because we're both
- 9:42Speaker 2: notorious for blowing draft dames. And yeah, so then so
- 9:50Speaker 2: we signed Kirk for a bazillion dollars and then instead
- 9:55Speaker 2: of taking Brock Bowers, we go ahead and draft Michael Pennix.
- 9:59Speaker 1: It was my thought it was the most interesting thing
- 10:01Speaker 1: coming into the season in the whole league.
- 10:03Speaker 2: What You're like, what because I knew from watching I'm like,
- 10:08Speaker 2: bron Bowers is going to be one of the best
- 10:11Speaker 2: players in the NFL, and damn ify.
- 10:13Speaker 1: And I think to see what he's doing. I don't
- 10:17Speaker 1: think people quite understand how the tight end position is
- 10:22Speaker 1: probably the most difficult other than left tackle, the most
- 10:25Speaker 1: difficult non quarterback transition on the offense to the pros.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So much blocking, so much route running. You never see
- 10:32Speaker 1: these guys break out in their first year. You certainly
- 10:34Speaker 1: don't see him breakout on bad teams, and you damn
- 10:37Speaker 1: sure don't see him breakout with a carousel of below
- 10:41Speaker 1: average quarterbacks. It doesn't seem to matter who's throwing the
- 10:43Speaker 1: ball like he's got I might end up being the
- 10:46Speaker 1: greatest tight end to ever play football energy in his
- 10:49Speaker 1: rookie season.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Oh and we saw it at Georgia that the cat
- 10:52Speaker 2: was just different, you know. And I mean, but you guys,
- 10:56Speaker 2: you know, Hockinson, you guys got a great tight end.
- 10:59Speaker 2: You always You're Minnesota does something that I'm always jealous
- 11:04Speaker 2: of is like you always have a pair of really
- 11:08Speaker 2: good receivers. Yeah, in the Falcons. I mean, maybe like
- 11:13Speaker 2: Julio and Roddy White for a couple of years, but
- 11:18Speaker 2: we never seem to be I mean, we got Drake
- 11:20Speaker 2: London now, and Drake's good, but you guys always seem
- 11:24Speaker 2: like you have a pair of them.
- 11:26Speaker 1: So I think about that a lot, because there are
- 11:29Speaker 1: things I don't know how it happens or why it happens,
- 11:32Speaker 1: but organizations and areas kind of you're right becomes synonymous.
- 11:37Speaker 1: The Vikings had Moss and Carter feeling and digs, and
- 11:41Speaker 1: now they have Jefferson asked, yeah, you go to Chicago,
- 11:46Speaker 1: It's like it's like there's a banner in their building
- 11:50Speaker 1: that says, we must have a middle linebacker right your
- 11:54Speaker 1: braves teams for that whole run in the nineties, it's
- 11:57Speaker 1: like we're gonna have essentially two to three aces constantly
- 12:02Speaker 1: right all the way up through. So I don't know
- 12:05Speaker 1: why or how like that happens. Somebody explained it, I think.
- 12:09Speaker 1: On the show last week about the Bears, his name
- 12:13Speaker 1: good comic named Daniel van Kirk. He said, maybe it's
- 12:17Speaker 1: the when you come into a place that has history
- 12:20Speaker 1: like that, you know, like if you come into like
- 12:24Speaker 1: in Georgia, when you walk into the building and you
- 12:27Speaker 1: see a bunch of pictures of the bulldogs of herschel Walker.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Everybody goes, hey, man, you gotta there's some stuff to
- 12:34Speaker 1: live up to here. But if you walk in at
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know, a different position, that's maybe just the aura
- 12:40Speaker 1: of the previous people creates that. I don't know, but
- 12:44Speaker 1: it is weird that it kind of repeats itself historically.
- 12:46Speaker 2: And you guys just I mean, when I think of
- 12:49Speaker 2: the Vikings, I always think of like great wide receivers.
- 12:54Speaker 2: It was funny because like, all right, i'mmist trying to
- 12:58Speaker 2: flip my screen around.
- 13:00Speaker 1: You can see my wall of like oh sure, yeah.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Remember being stuff. So I'm trying to do that for
- 13:07Speaker 2: my son in law. So every year I buy him,
- 13:11Speaker 2: it's it's usually a Vike to put in his office.
- 13:16Speaker 2: And so I wanted to get him with Jefferson, and
- 13:18Speaker 2: he would not allow me to do it until he
- 13:21Speaker 2: signed his second contract. He's like, no, he's gonna break
- 13:25Speaker 2: my heart. He's gonna go somewhere else. And so so
- 13:29Speaker 2: I did finally get a sign Jefferson for him in there.
- 13:33Speaker 1: But now is he so is your son? Is he
- 13:35Speaker 1: from Minnesota originally? Or is he one of these places
- 13:38Speaker 1: that his family was? And then they grew up somewhere else.
- 13:41Speaker 2: He and his forty five cousins, all of their aunts
- 13:44Speaker 2: and uncles are from Minnesota.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I'm catching strays with that one. Jeff as a man
- 13:49Speaker 1: who's got a mom with eight brothers and sisters, and
- 13:51Speaker 1: I have a but you you hit it on the head.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Is he Swedish too? Is he a giant Nordic Swedish person?
- 13:56Speaker 2: Now he's Irish poorly. But they're all they're all Minnesota people.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I mean they're Twins fans, they're Vikes fans. He's taught
- 14:08Speaker 2: my grandson. He's three now, but I found him last year.
- 14:11Speaker 2: He's two years old, two years old, down at my
- 14:15Speaker 2: farm in the middle of a field, and I videotaped
- 14:17Speaker 2: him singing the Vikings fight song two years old, every
- 14:21Speaker 2: word of it, at the top of his lungs with it.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Because we had to negotiate because he was a Vikings
- 14:28Speaker 2: and a Notre Dame fan. Another one that would break
- 14:31Speaker 2: your heart. And I was a Bulldogs and a Falcons fan,
- 14:34Speaker 2: so two more that would break your heart. So before
- 14:36Speaker 2: he was born, we had serious negotiations and who was
- 14:42Speaker 2: going to get the college team and one was going
- 14:44Speaker 2: to get pro and one was going to get caught,
- 14:47Speaker 2: and so I ended up I took the Bulldogs because
- 14:51Speaker 2: the twenty eight to three. I never trust the Falcons anymore.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I mean I root for them, I follow them, but
- 14:58Speaker 2: it's like it's like day a hooker, you know, It's
- 15:01Speaker 2: like every year, you're like, you're not gonna cheat on me. Right,
- 15:04Speaker 2: You're not gonna break You're not gonna break my heart again.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Right if I get if I get all invested again,
- 15:10Speaker 2: You're You're not gonna break my heart. Oh no, I'm
- 15:13Speaker 2: not gonna break your heart. And then you get invested
- 15:15Speaker 2: and then they break your heart. And so I went
- 15:18Speaker 2: with the Bulldogs and he took the he took the Vikes.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Especially given the state of what's happening in college football
- 15:25Speaker 1: and the elevation of the SEC, I think that was
- 15:28Speaker 1: the right call. I think you made the right decision.
- 15:31Speaker 2: I think I did too. But now, like in pro
- 15:34Speaker 2: the NFC North is like the SEC, and in the
- 15:39Speaker 2: NFC South it's kind of like the Sun Belt.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Now, yeah, there's a little easier nobody Wolves to win
- 15:45Speaker 1: the conference. Uh are they down? Are they near you
- 15:49Speaker 1: in Atlanta?
- 15:50Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah?
- 15:51Speaker 1: What is the what is the game day ritual, So
- 15:53Speaker 1: let's go pro not college. Are they coming over? Are
- 15:57Speaker 1: you get like I have my nephew comes over. I
- 15:59Speaker 1: have an adult because I've got a big hillbilly family
- 16:02Speaker 1: where somehow I've got a nephew two years younger than me,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you know, and so he'll come over. We have you know,
- 16:09Speaker 1: we've got the multiple TVs for the multiple people rooting
- 16:12Speaker 1: for multiple teams. There's just curse words coming from different angles.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Do you guys get together or do you commiserate afterwards?
- 16:20Speaker 2: It depends on how big the game is, because he's like,
- 16:24Speaker 2: if it's a really big one, he'll go into a shell.
- 16:28Speaker 2: And he's got a one year old and a three
- 16:29Speaker 2: year old, So I allow them to come over here
- 16:33Speaker 2: while I kind of clear space for him. I'm running
- 16:38Speaker 2: like his wing and he'll tell me, first of the wait,
- 16:40Speaker 2: look Sunday, I gotta have I gotta be all it.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Can you take the kids?
- 16:46Speaker 1: You're his NFL babysitter wing man?
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah. And then but it's somewhat like if he
- 16:53Speaker 2: comes to our house, he has every TV in the
- 16:56Speaker 2: house on and he's he can't sit down. I've got
- 17:01Speaker 2: footage of him like when the Vikings win in the
- 17:05Speaker 2: last second. Well, I was with him in the car
- 17:07Speaker 2: the other day when he lost his mind. But this
- 17:12Speaker 2: dude like rips his shirt off, is out in the
- 17:15Speaker 2: front yard beatings, screaming skull. He loses his mind and
- 17:24Speaker 2: then like in was it eighteen? He eighteen? I can't
- 17:30Speaker 2: remember who they lost to. But he announced he was
- 17:33Speaker 2: going on a hunger strike. He was as down as
- 17:36Speaker 2: I've ever so, I literally, I mean, he's got a
- 17:41Speaker 2: bad Viking problem. So I went, this is how good
- 17:44Speaker 2: of a son in law. I went to Honey Baked
- 17:47Speaker 2: Ham and got him a Honey Baked Ham sandwich and
- 17:49Speaker 2: soup and took it over there.
- 17:51Speaker 1: So he was sick.
- 17:52Speaker 2: So yeah, like he has pneumonia because the Vikings lost,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and I'm in there like, dude, you got to eat
- 18:00Speaker 2: you got it.
- 18:03Speaker 1: It's I remember I've told this probably on this show.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I've told it to other people. I was doing so
- 18:09Speaker 1: the one that got me ninety eight, I was so.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I was young. I was fifteen, And you think that
- 18:15Speaker 1: was such a special team. You remember them, You thought
- 18:16Speaker 1: you were gonna get blown out. I think everybody thought
- 18:19Speaker 1: this was the start. They didn't realize it was their
- 18:21Speaker 1: best chance at the mountaintop. You thought we're about to
- 18:24Speaker 1: go into ten years of Randy Moss mania. And so
- 18:28Speaker 1: that one hurt. But the one that like truly.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Hurt Barvan, New Orleans.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Barvan, New Orleans. It was farv and and I'm a
- 18:37Speaker 1: broken record, but I remember when he hit Sidney Rice
- 18:41Speaker 1: on a pattern up the middle and he crossed the
- 18:43Speaker 1: fifty yard line. I thought, I let myself believe it. Jeff,
- 18:47Speaker 1: I thought to myself, and I bet you've heard your
- 18:49Speaker 1: son in Las Ades ex actors. I thought to myself,
- 18:52Speaker 1: oh my god, we're going to the super Bowl. And
- 18:55Speaker 1: then when he missed that kick, I remember the next week.
- 18:58Speaker 1: You know, you remember from back in your club days.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I know the landscape has changed immensely, but there are
- 19:04Speaker 1: comedy clubs and then there are a few of those
- 19:06Speaker 1: clubs where you're like, I wait all year to perform
- 19:09Speaker 1: at this club, and one of them is Comedy on
- 19:13Speaker 1: State in Madison. So I have Comedy on State the
- 19:17Speaker 1: next week, and I go there and I felt like
- 19:22Speaker 1: someone broke up with me. That's how pathetic that I
- 19:25Speaker 1: felt like. I felt like my heart it's to this day,
- 19:28Speaker 1: it's my least fun comedy week at one of the
- 19:30Speaker 1: best clubs. But I just I didn't enjoy a thing.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I was miserable. Same thing. Pathetic, a pathetic excuse of
- 19:37Speaker 1: a person.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Well, when the Falcons twenty eight to three, and my
- 19:42Speaker 2: daughter looks at me this is the fourth quarter and
- 19:44Speaker 2: looks at me and says, start of the fourth quarter,
- 19:47Speaker 2: Oh my god, Dad, we're gonna win the Super Bowl.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Oh no.
- 19:52Speaker 2: And then the Patriots come storming back. But then Ryan
- 19:56Speaker 2: connects with Julio Jones and we're now we're in field
- 20:01Speaker 2: goal range. Great, Julio catch. All we have to do
- 20:06Speaker 2: is run it three times and kick the field go backwards,
- 20:10Speaker 2: just don't go backwards. We pass it three straight downs
- 20:14Speaker 2: and he gets sacked twice, and you're like, all we
- 20:17Speaker 2: had to do was run the ball up the middle
- 20:21Speaker 2: three times in a row and kick the field goal.
- 20:23Speaker 2: So I and dude the next day, because you're probably
- 20:29Speaker 2: like me, if I'm in the car truck, I'm listening,
- 20:31Speaker 2: I got sports talking, and I've never seen anything like this.
- 20:37Speaker 2: This whole city was like it was dead. Like the
- 20:42Speaker 2: guy would come on and go, I don't have anything
- 20:45Speaker 2: to say. If anybody wants to call in, you can
- 20:47Speaker 2: call in and it would just be like dead air.
- 20:53Speaker 2: But yo, were I mean that year you guys, you
- 20:57Speaker 2: guys were the best team in the NFL that year.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yep, I think that's I think that's kind of
- 21:04Speaker 1: the travesty of some stuff. And I actually think this
- 21:06Speaker 1: about your ninety one Braves team. Now, you guys went
- 21:09Speaker 1: on to win a win a championship with one of
- 21:11Speaker 1: those nineties Braves teams. What was it ninety six? You
- 21:13Speaker 1: guys got one ninety.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Five, ninety five against the Indians. But but, and as
- 21:18Speaker 2: a lifelong baseball fan, I still say the ninety one
- 21:22Speaker 2: World Series is World Series of all time, best World
- 21:24Speaker 2: Series ever?
- 21:25Speaker 1: What I don't and somebody who I fell off on baseball,
- 21:29Speaker 1: like I could write a ted talk about my frustrations
- 21:34Speaker 1: in the uh you know, but it looks like the
- 21:37Speaker 1: Twins are gonna have new owners. Like we're like, we're
- 21:39Speaker 1: heading a good direction again. But you're a little cute
- 21:41Speaker 1: who grows up with Kirby Puckett saying hop on my
- 21:44Speaker 1: back and hits that homer in six. But I don't.
- 21:47Speaker 1: It's not just the greatest World Series of all time
- 21:50Speaker 1: the Game seven. I watched it again as an adult.
- 21:53Speaker 1: It's greatest pitching performance, greatest game. It's it's everything.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Molts and Jack Morris in Game seven. Now, if Lonnie
- 22:03Speaker 2: Smith doesn't get deeked out at second base, we probably
- 22:09Speaker 2: win that game one to nothing.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Yep.
- 22:11Speaker 2: But Smoltz and Jack Morris were two warriors that night,
- 22:17Speaker 2: and I mean it was one of those when it ended,
- 22:21Speaker 2: I couldn't even get out of my chair. You're just like,
- 22:23Speaker 2: I'm exhausted. But it was so much fun because they
- 22:26Speaker 2: both were last place the year before.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yep, and climbed up the ranks. You know, the thing
- 22:32Speaker 1: I like about baseball, and I love minor league baseball,
- 22:37Speaker 1: but the thing I love about baseball isn't necessarily the
- 22:40Speaker 1: baseball itself. It's a little corny, but I like the
- 22:44Speaker 1: romance of it. I don't think it's a coincidence that
- 22:46Speaker 1: baseball makes the best sports movies and by leaps and
- 22:51Speaker 1: bounds like a really long ways, and I just think
- 22:54Speaker 1: because there's something Baseball is this interesting collection of individual
- 23:00Speaker 1: sports masquerading as a team sport. It's a pitcher against
- 23:03Speaker 1: a batter, right, it's a guy catching the ball. It's
- 23:05Speaker 1: it's not so much connected in the same way the
- 23:08Speaker 1: other sports are and so I think when you have
- 23:10Speaker 1: a game like that Game seven, where you have Jack
- 23:14Speaker 1: Morris going ten innings and John Smoltz going the distance
- 23:18Speaker 1: and not giving up a single run, there's just something
- 23:21Speaker 1: so this is corny but soul touching and poetic about
- 23:26Speaker 1: something like that that it's almost hard to create moments
- 23:30Speaker 1: of tension like that in other games because of how
- 23:33Speaker 1: fast they move and how much the play intertwines.
- 23:37Speaker 2: You know, I would agree, but like in football, like
- 23:43Speaker 2: you guys had one of those moments. So Cousins tears'
- 23:47Speaker 2: achilles and then it's like, what Hall's gonna start all the.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Dobbs things, you guys, Yes, And so Hall gets hurt
- 23:59Speaker 1: on the first drive, and.
- 24:01Speaker 2: They bring in Josh Dopps, who's been with Minnesota for
- 24:05Speaker 2: like ten minutes. He doesn't he doesn't even know anybody's
- 24:08Speaker 2: name in the locker room, and he couldn't have known
- 24:12Speaker 2: the playbook. No, it was pretty much like O'Connell just said,
- 24:17Speaker 2: run here, throw there, backyard football. Just yeah, And you
- 24:22Speaker 2: had to be in the huddle going go, you go
- 24:25Speaker 2: five yards and turned towards the car, you go to
- 24:28Speaker 2: the Smith's front yard into a button hook and and
- 24:33Speaker 2: leads him down the field at the end of the game,
- 24:35Speaker 2: and they so, to me, that's that's a movie.
- 24:39Speaker 1: No, that's it. That's a good point.
- 24:41Speaker 2: But baseball is much more of a individual storyline thing
- 24:47Speaker 2: than football.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Yeah you can. You are, like, I just the the
- 24:51Speaker 1: amount of affection I have for Jack Morris. It's almost
- 24:55Speaker 1: like I see this whole personality and backstory and I've
- 24:59Speaker 1: built so many narratives into a human man because of
- 25:03Speaker 1: one game I watched him pitch, as opposed to some
- 25:06Speaker 1: other sports where you just it's more about the physical
- 25:10Speaker 1: accomplishment of the moment, the mindset of what it takes
- 25:14Speaker 1: to have. In Game seven of the World Series, have
- 25:18Speaker 1: your manager be like, we're gonna send a reliever and
- 25:20Speaker 1: then you go, the hell you are, I'm going out,
- 25:24Speaker 1: and then you do it and you shut them. That's
- 25:26Speaker 1: wild to me.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Well, and John Smoltz is one of my best friends, and.
- 25:30Speaker 1: So that's cool.
- 25:32Speaker 2: And you know, he's always been honest about when he
- 25:36Speaker 2: had it and when he did and he's like, dude,
- 25:39Speaker 2: I had it that night, I had it, he said.
- 25:42Speaker 2: And then you realize, oh, hell, jack'scot it too, And
- 25:48Speaker 2: I mean that was just one for the ages It's
- 25:50Speaker 2: still my favorite World series of all time.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Does Smoltz look back. I'm always curious about because as
- 25:57Speaker 1: opposed to the Falcons loss or that Vikings fave intercept
- 26:00Speaker 1: where you feel like you did something wrong, Like when
- 26:04Speaker 1: you're that high level of an athlete, like you're one
- 26:06Speaker 1: of the greatest pitchers to ever walk out onto a
- 26:08Speaker 1: mound and you perform at your highest level and someone
- 26:12Speaker 1: just out high levels you by a Smith. Does he
- 26:15Speaker 1: walk away from that going, God, damn, I was just
- 26:18Speaker 1: a part of something special. Or does that burn in
- 26:21Speaker 1: a way that is unique?
- 26:24Speaker 2: I think probably the former is in John. It doesn't
- 26:31Speaker 2: matter what you're doing. You could be playing ping pong
- 26:33Speaker 2: or whatever. He's he's the most competitive human being I've
- 26:37Speaker 2: ever I've ever been around. But he's like you just
- 26:41Speaker 2: kind of tip your hat that night, go, you know,
- 26:45Speaker 2: and what could have been? You decliney Smith out and
- 26:48Speaker 2: we end up with the bases loaded and nobody out
- 26:51Speaker 2: and don't score. I remember that summer I was playing up.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I was playing in many apples. I can't remember which club,
- 27:02Speaker 2: and I went out because the Twins were such a
- 27:06Speaker 2: story that summer and went out to the Old and
- 27:09Speaker 2: and all I remember is new smoking in the Metrodome
- 27:16Speaker 2: uh uh. And the way they announced Kirby Pucketgerby Pucket.
- 27:27Speaker 1: It is forever cemented into every Minnesotan's brain.
- 27:32Speaker 2: And and Dan Gladden out there with the official redneck
- 27:35Speaker 2: uh hair.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Dan Gladden looks like his dad was one of your
- 27:39Speaker 1: old albums. Uh. I want to ask you one more
- 27:48Speaker 1: question about Kirk and I'll get you out of here.
- 27:50Speaker 1: We appreciate you being a part of the show. Uh.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Kirk was so interestingly, I think divisive in the fan base,
- 27:59Speaker 1: Like if you were a part of the organization, you
- 28:01Speaker 1: know I've always said and you probably know this, knowing
- 28:04Speaker 1: that you know a little bit about him now that
- 28:06Speaker 1: he's in Atlanta. First class human being, right, yeah, first
- 28:10Speaker 1: class human being and an all time accurate arm right.
- 28:15Speaker 1: And where it gets muddy for the fan base is
- 28:19Speaker 1: the argument of kind of like what you were saying earlier,
- 28:22Speaker 1: and then you add on top of that, right, how
- 28:25Speaker 1: right you need things to do versus how off schedule
- 28:28Speaker 1: and whether you should have you know, the old line
- 28:30Speaker 1: needed there just gets into this big, never ending argument
- 28:34Speaker 1: and it kind of went from Washington, it followed him
- 28:38Speaker 1: to Minnesota, and it existed there. And what I am
- 28:41Speaker 1: curious at this moment is you guys walk into this game,
- 28:43Speaker 1: which is a you're right, Tampa's playing, Well, this is
- 28:46Speaker 1: a big game for you guys. It's a big game
- 28:48Speaker 1: for him.
- 28:49Speaker 2: So let me ask you this. And I asked my
- 28:52Speaker 2: son and all of this last week. I said, is
- 28:55Speaker 2: he going to get booed when he gives back to Minnesota?
- 28:59Speaker 2: And he said, nah, Vikings fans aren't like that.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Yeah, they'll they'll they'll clap while whispering something negative in
- 29:07Speaker 1: their spouse's ear is what they will do. It's like, oh, well,
- 29:11Speaker 1: you're so great this guy is. You know, that's what
- 29:14Speaker 1: will happen. I will say, you hit it on the head.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Sam has played so well, They've built the rosters so well.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Anybody who's booing, like I think, if you didn't like Kirker,
- 29:25Speaker 1: didn't want Kirk, maybe you feel vindicated now. But anyone
- 29:29Speaker 1: who comes to boo to me, it's like, what do
- 29:31Speaker 1: you what it's like when Diggs left? But you got
- 29:34Speaker 1: justin Jefferson like let him let him go, let it,
- 29:37Speaker 1: let it, let it, let it live. So I think
- 29:39Speaker 1: you might even be surprised how warm of a welcome
- 29:42Speaker 1: he gets at the bank this weekend.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Yeah, Kirk. To me, it's and it's a little bit
- 29:50Speaker 2: like Georgia always has a pro style quarterback. I think
- 29:53Speaker 2: if Kirk probably would have had more success fifteen years
- 29:57Speaker 2: earlier because and Ai tipped my hat that he was
- 30:04Speaker 2: able to come back from the Achilles thing.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 30:06Speaker 2: But in the open but in the first game of
- 30:09Speaker 2: the season looked horrible. The whole team looked horrible. And
- 30:13Speaker 2: then I'm like, oh, it's going to be one of
- 30:16Speaker 2: these years where we're the worst team in football. And
- 30:19Speaker 2: then they kind of got it together and started playing
- 30:22Speaker 2: well and we're Okay, we're six and six. When we
- 30:26Speaker 2: lost three in a row, Hell, three weeks ago, we
- 30:28Speaker 2: were on top of the world. But same thing with Georgia.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I think football has changed and you have to be
- 30:37Speaker 2: at least semi mobile as a quarterback. And I think
- 30:41Speaker 2: back to like was friend Tarkinton forty years ahead of his.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Time, one hundred percent, because.
- 30:50Speaker 2: He's one of the players for me being a little
- 30:52Speaker 2: kid that I just remember going, dang, you can't tackle
- 30:55Speaker 2: this guy. You know, he extends plays forever. And I
- 31:00Speaker 2: think that's no pun intended Kurt's Achilles hill is he
- 31:06Speaker 2: just can't move well.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It's really interesting. History is funny. You grew up and
- 31:10Speaker 1: you saw those purple people leater teams. I think if
- 31:12Speaker 1: they win two or three of those Super Bowls, the
- 31:15Speaker 1: Vikings are considered, uh, you know, a cornerstone franchise. He's
- 31:19Speaker 1: considered one of the greatest quarterbacks. It's just funny how
- 31:22Speaker 1: that happens. But your other point, it's so interesting and correct.
- 31:28Speaker 1: You think about because I love basketball too, I'm a
- 31:31Speaker 1: big basketball guy, and I think about what if Reggie
- 31:34Speaker 1: Miller got to play in today's day and age with
- 31:36Speaker 1: the way he shot the ball back in the nineties
- 31:39Speaker 1: when they took three threes a game in that same way,
- 31:43Speaker 1: imagine if you pourted Kirk back to the Troy Aikman nineties,
- 31:48Speaker 1: where you had these big, bruising running games. You didn't
- 31:51Speaker 1: have all these motion offenses, all these college concepts that
- 31:54Speaker 1: have as the rules have changed, you know, offense has
- 31:58Speaker 1: become so dynamic and so strong. I think you're exactly right.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I think you put Kirk in the nineties and he's
- 32:04Speaker 1: probably a Jim Kelly type.
- 32:06Speaker 2: I agree, I think he is. But like even with George,
- 32:13Speaker 2: I'm like, man, moving forward, we got to have a
- 32:15Speaker 2: quarterback that can move, you know. I mean, I don't
- 32:18Speaker 2: need him to rush for one hundred yards a game,
- 32:20Speaker 2: but he's got to be able to get outside of
- 32:23Speaker 2: the pocket and extend plays.
- 32:25Speaker 1: And you look it out of the way.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Yeah. You you look at the the franchises that that
- 32:31Speaker 2: are doing well in the NFL, that all of them
- 32:34Speaker 2: have a quarterback that's mobile.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it's uh. It is the way things have probably
- 32:40Speaker 1: permanently changed. I don't think they're going to go back
- 32:43Speaker 1: to guys who are like I'm going to stand here now.
- 32:46Speaker 2: I will tell you this as an outsider looking in Okay,
- 32:51Speaker 2: probably as a Vikings fan. It's it's a lifetime of frustration.
- 32:57Speaker 2: But I think other people look at y'all is one
- 33:00Speaker 2: of the top tier football teams because you have been
- 33:04Speaker 2: always think of the Vikings like the Vikings. Oh, the
- 33:08Speaker 2: Vikings are good. The Vikings are good. I never think
- 33:11Speaker 2: of them as a bad team. I always think of
- 33:14Speaker 2: the Vikings as being good. But it's like you get
- 33:17Speaker 2: right up to the top of the thing and then
- 33:20Speaker 2: find a way to.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Fall off the mountain. We hang out on the mountain,
- 33:23Speaker 1: but we like to fall.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you guys, you've got that falcon thing where they
- 33:31Speaker 2: know how to break your heart. Yeah, you guys are
- 33:34Speaker 2: such good fans. You'll come back the next week and
- 33:37Speaker 2: you know, be right there.
- 33:38Speaker 1: But we'll be right there cheering for Kirk. That's what
- 33:41Speaker 1: we'll be doing.
- 33:42Speaker 2: But maybe this is the year. I mean, your defense,
- 33:46Speaker 2: your defense is so much better wild and this I
- 33:50Speaker 2: think this iteration of the Vikings, this team has hard.
- 33:55Speaker 2: You know, they could have folded last week, I think.
- 33:58Speaker 2: And and to me, that's the difference in great teams
- 34:04Speaker 2: and teams that aren't is having each other's back and
- 34:10Speaker 2: having that hard.
- 34:12Speaker 1: In the belief in those moments that you're going to
- 34:14Speaker 1: figure it out.
- 34:15Speaker 2: And I think this team has that more than the
- 34:18Speaker 2: Vikings have had in recent years. It's like, do you
- 34:23Speaker 2: not agree?
- 34:24Speaker 1: I mean, I very much agree. I think I would
- 34:27Speaker 1: pair that with because I always say I think locker
- 34:31Speaker 1: rooms are sports. Locker rooms are unique places, and you
- 34:34Speaker 1: hear all these cliches and you think they're dumb, but
- 34:37Speaker 1: they actually believe them. And locker rooms take on a
- 34:41Speaker 1: personality of their own. And if you lose three close games,
- 34:43Speaker 1: next time you're in a close game and you think
- 34:45Speaker 1: that's who you are. And so I do think it's
- 34:47Speaker 1: a big deal that they have developed this persona. You know,
- 34:53Speaker 1: they blew a few teams out and now they've figured
- 34:55Speaker 1: out how to win gritty. The other thing I would
- 34:58Speaker 1: add on top of it is exactly what you said earlier.
- 35:02Speaker 1: They freed up all this money, but it's next year. Also,
- 35:05Speaker 1: this is a team that is ten and two, that
- 35:07Speaker 1: has a rookie quarterback on their roster that is a
- 35:11Speaker 1: very affordable contract that is about to walk into seventy
- 35:13Speaker 1: five million dollars of cap space. And so I'm very
- 35:17Speaker 1: very I'm enjoying every minute of the season and I'm
- 35:21Speaker 1: always the sky is falling, Jeff, But I have bought
- 35:24Speaker 1: in to I don't know a right place, right time,
- 35:28Speaker 1: right moment. We might go on a run and then
- 35:30Speaker 1: but it's gravy because I think the GM and the
- 35:33Speaker 1: organization is so strong that you use that seventy five
- 35:37Speaker 1: million bucks this offseason and you put a couple more
- 35:39Speaker 1: people on this team and we might be walking into
- 35:41Speaker 1: next year in a real big time window.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Dude, I don't think there's anybody that wouldn't take your head, coach.
- 35:49Speaker 2: I think O'Connell. I mean, what a great surprise. He's
- 35:53Speaker 2: been right, and hell I would take him today nothing again,
- 35:59Speaker 2: Raheem Morris. But I think he's going to be around
- 36:02Speaker 2: for a long time. And I I just feel like
- 36:06Speaker 2: you guys are on the on the right track.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Can I pitch you my Can I pitch you my
- 36:11Speaker 1: craziest theory because I'd be curious what you think about
- 36:13Speaker 1: this because we talked to a lot of people on
- 36:16Speaker 1: this show.
- 36:16Speaker 2: It says, Okay, you have a fan brain that has
- 36:19Speaker 2: been permanently damaged over the years. But yes, I would
- 36:24Speaker 2: like to hear the theory.
- 36:25Speaker 1: But see, we have people on the show and some
- 36:27Speaker 1: of them are fans. But you are You are a
- 36:31Speaker 1: You are clearly a deep than Oh yeah right, you
- 36:35Speaker 1: of of your Yeah, you're a I'm gonna be you
- 36:38Speaker 1: take this word however you would like. But you're a maniac.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I can see it, I can feel it, I can
- 36:44Speaker 1: sense it as one of my own. I have a
- 36:47Speaker 1: maniac radar. So I'll pitch this to you and you
- 36:51Speaker 1: won't think I'm telling you the moon landing was fake.
- 36:55Speaker 1: I have been waiting for a coach and an organization
- 37:00Speaker 1: and to break the quarterback structure in the NFL, right,
- 37:07Speaker 1: because again this is salary cap, right, the salary cap rule,
- 37:12Speaker 1: and you know quarterbacks. Now there's this thing where in
- 37:15Speaker 1: the last however many years, the only quarterbacks, the only
- 37:18Speaker 1: teams that have won a Super Bowl with a quarterback
- 37:19Speaker 1: that makes more than twelve percent was Brady one year,
- 37:23Speaker 1: and then Mahomes a couple times because he's Mahomes. That's
- 37:26Speaker 1: ever since the salary cap started. People don't they don't
- 37:28Speaker 1: realize salary cap started right around the time Tom Brady
- 37:32Speaker 1: started going. And then he took a cheap deal because
- 37:35Speaker 1: of his model wife every year and cruised with awesome rosters.
- 37:39Speaker 1: You know, tough thing about being a GM or a
- 37:43Speaker 1: head coach is you screw up, You're gone. Right, There's
- 37:46Speaker 1: not a lot of franchises like you know, the Vikings
- 37:49Speaker 1: are very supportive franchise, the Steelers, where the leash is
- 37:53Speaker 1: a little longer. I've been waiting for a coach who goes.
- 37:58Speaker 1: I don't care about having a Hall of Fame quarterback.
- 38:02Speaker 1: What I'm gonna do is either take a reclamation project
- 38:05Speaker 1: or a second, third or fourth round draft pick every
- 38:07Speaker 1: single year. And I'm such a good quarterbacks coach that
- 38:11Speaker 1: I am gonna work that guy through his cheap deal,
- 38:14Speaker 1: and then I'm gonna find another one, and I'm gonna
- 38:15Speaker 1: keep doing that. And tell I, if I get a
- 38:17Speaker 1: Mahomes someday, obviously I'm gonna keep the Mahomes or a
- 38:21Speaker 1: Josh Allen. I thought Harbaugh might do it in San
- 38:25Speaker 1: Francisco when he was cycling through guys. Kevin O'Connell, like
- 38:29Speaker 1: we're playing in the fantasy world. He is so highly
- 38:32Speaker 1: respected and so good at quarterbacks. I have the belief
- 38:37Speaker 1: that give him a good roster and give him any
- 38:39Speaker 1: quarterback he won with Josh Dobbs just saying plays into
- 38:42Speaker 1: his headset. He I don't think anyone will ever do it.
- 38:45Speaker 1: But if anyone was meant for that crazy break the
- 38:49Speaker 1: salary cap quarterback thing, it is Kevin O'Connell.
- 38:52Speaker 2: It is. But to your point, I'm not sure that's
- 38:56Speaker 2: a great thing. And you know I had a I had,
- 39:02Speaker 2: We had Michael Vick, you know, which is like one
- 39:04Speaker 2: of the first guys to break the bank. Yes, we
- 39:07Speaker 2: ended up running the team because we had no money
- 39:10Speaker 2: for anything else. But I, like, I wasn't excited when
- 39:15Speaker 2: y'all took McCarthy and then like when you started playing
- 39:21Speaker 2: exhibit and I'm like, holy cow, look what Donald has
- 39:25Speaker 2: done with McCarthy. I think that's one of the saddest
- 39:28Speaker 2: things of the year. I was excited to see what
- 39:32Speaker 2: he could have become because I think you're right. I
- 39:35Speaker 2: think if you've got and and that's O'Connell's biggest strength
- 39:41Speaker 2: is he's so good with quarterbacks. And I don't think
- 39:44Speaker 2: you need to have my homes to win it. But
- 39:47Speaker 2: because look what, all right, so you take all the
- 39:51Speaker 2: Kirk's money off the books and and look what Florida's
- 39:55Speaker 2: did with the defense. I mean, you are a much
- 40:00Speaker 2: more complete team this year than you were last year
- 40:04Speaker 2: because you freed up so much money.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I'll always put the money in uh in defense always
- 40:12Speaker 1: that is that is my dumb guy brain, give me
- 40:15Speaker 1: all the defenders.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Well, as a Georgia Bulldog fan, defense wins championships and
- 40:21Speaker 2: it still does. And if you look at twenty one
- 40:25Speaker 2: and twenty two, that's how Georgia won the Natty. Because
- 40:31Speaker 2: your offense doesn't need to score forty points a game.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Put together an offense that's good enough to score twenty
- 40:39Speaker 2: four game and you're probably gonna win most times.
- 40:42Speaker 1: And it's I always think it's easier to play offense
- 40:44Speaker 1: when the game is tilted your direction as opposed to
- 40:47Speaker 1: defense when it's tilted your direction, because they're still trying
- 40:50Speaker 1: to come back, so make it make it easier when
- 40:52Speaker 1: you do that. Jeff, you're the king. This is great now, dude, I.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Have enjoyed it. This is one of those weeks where
- 41:01Speaker 2: I can't really lose. I mean, if the Falcons win,
- 41:03Speaker 2: I'm happy because then maybe we But if the Bikes win,
- 41:07Speaker 2: my son in law is going to be so happy.
- 41:09Speaker 1: So well, I hope your son in law ends up happy.
- 41:12Speaker 1: This meant a ton to us, Jeff, this was fantastic.
