- 0:09Speaker 1: Mark 10 is the words of Jesus, verses 8 and 9.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Jesus quotes Genesis 2.24.
- 0:18Speaker 2: For Jesus, this.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Verse was the most fundamental verse about marriage in all
- 0:24Speaker 1: of the Bible. This is Jesus' foundation stone for the
- 0:27Speaker 1: beginning of all of his teachings about marriage.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Verse 8. Mark 10.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Mark 10. The two shall become one flesh. So, Jesus says,
- 0:44Speaker 1: they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore
- 0:51Speaker 1: God has joined together, let no man separate.
- 1:05Speaker 2: That's huge.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Do you feel the weight of that?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Engaged couples. Married couples. When a couple speaks their vows
- 1:23Speaker 1: and consummates their vows with sexual union, it is not man, woman, pastor,
- 1:31Speaker 1: parent who's the main actor.
- 1:37Speaker 2: God is.
- 1:41Speaker 1: God joins a husband and a wife in one flesh.
- 1:47Speaker 1: God does that. God does that. From which Jesus draws
- 1:55Speaker 1: the awesome conclusion. What God has joined, no man may separate.
- 2:07Speaker 2: God does.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Will bring you into a relationship with someone. Most of
- 2:12Speaker 4: the time. Who is not only not compatible with you.
- 2:18Speaker 2: But is weak.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Tremendously weak in the very areas where you would most
- 2:25Speaker 4: want them to be strong. Now, why does he do that?
- 2:34Speaker 2: I'll tell you why.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Remember our text, Romans 8, 28 and 29. What is
- 2:42Speaker 4: the goal of everything God does in His providence for
- 2:46Speaker 4: His children? To conform them to the image of Christ. Now,
- 2:53Speaker 4: when you think of the image of Christ, what are
- 2:57Speaker 4: some characteristics that just automatically spring to the forefront?
- 3:02Speaker 2: Well, for me, three. Unconditional love. mercy and grace.
- 3:16Speaker 4: If I could pick out three things in which they
- 3:18Speaker 4: told me, you can imitate Christ in these. That's what
- 3:22Speaker 4: I think about. Unconditional love, mercy and grace. Now, I
- 3:30Speaker 4: have some things here I want to just go ahead
- 3:32Speaker 4: and read that I've written out so I get them right.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Let me ask you a few questions. How would you ever....
- 3:41Speaker 4: Unconditional love. If you were married to someone who met
- 3:45Speaker 4: all the conditions.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Question. How would you ever learn mercy? Patience. Long suffering.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Heartfelt compassion. If you were.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Married to someone who never failed you. Who was never
- 4:06Speaker 4: difficult with you. Who never sinned against you. who was
- 4:10Speaker 4: never slow to acknowledge their sin or ask for forgiveness.
- 4:16Speaker 4: How would you ever learn grace to pour out your
- 4:19Speaker 4: favor on someone who did not deserve it if you
- 4:23Speaker 4: were married to someone who was always deserving of.
- 4:26Speaker 2: All good things? Do you see that? Listen to me.
- 4:32Speaker 2: The main purpose of marriage is that through your marriage.
- 4:38Speaker 4: You become conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. Marriage,
- 4:45Speaker 4: I believe, is the greatest instrument of sanctification. You are
- 4:52Speaker 4: married to a person who does not meet all the
- 4:54Speaker 4: conditions so that you might learn unconditional love. You are
- 5:01Speaker 4: married to a person who needs mercy so that you
- 5:04Speaker 4: learn to give it.
- 5:08Speaker 2: You are married to.
- 5:09Speaker 4: A person who does not deserve so that you learn
- 5:12Speaker 4: to pour lavishly yourself out on a person who does
- 5:15Speaker 4: not respond appropriately and thus.
- 5:17Speaker 2: You become like the God you worship.
- 5:22Speaker 5: You see, you worship God for these things, but you
- 5:24Speaker 5: don't want to give them to others.
- 5:28Speaker 2: You worship God for grace, but you demand that your
- 5:32Speaker 2: wife live in such a way that she not be
- 5:33Speaker 2: in need of it.
- 5:34Speaker 5: You worship God for unconditional love, but you get mad
- 5:38Speaker 5: at your own wife when she doesn't meet the conditions.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Do you see? God joins individuals together in marriage. Man
- 5:49Speaker 3: cannot unjoin what God has joined. Okay? The one flesh
- 5:55Speaker 3: union created in marriage is permanent until death. By the way,
- 6:01Speaker 3: that's why in our vows, what do we say? And
- 6:05Speaker 3: here's why, if I weren't a permanence view guy, I'd
- 6:07Speaker 3: have to find a way to change wedding vows. Because
- 6:10Speaker 3: the wedding vows are permanence view vows. For richer, for poorer.
- 6:16Speaker 3: In sickness and health. For better or worse. Let me
- 6:22Speaker 3: ask you something. Is adultery better or worse? It's worse.
- 6:26Speaker 3: And it's covered in the marriage vow. Forsaking all others.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Until when? Until when? Until my partner doesn't do this.
- 6:38Speaker 2: No.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Until we are parted by death. That's the marriage vow, folks.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Now instead of one broken, sinful individual who's walking out
- 6:52Speaker 3: this Christian life with the power that raised Christ from
- 6:55Speaker 3: the dead in me, there is another broken, sinful individual
- 6:59Speaker 3: with the power that raised Christ from the dead in
- 7:02Speaker 3: them as well. God has made the two into one.
- 7:13Speaker 3: And He's given us the unbelievable privilege of representing before
- 7:18Speaker 3: a lost and hurting and dying world this relationship between
- 7:23Speaker 3: Jesus Christ and His church. And it is awesome in
- 7:29Speaker 3: the true sense of the word. We are absolutely not
- 7:33Speaker 3: up to the job. But praise God He is able.
- 7:43Speaker 3: And here's what I want you to see. Am I
- 7:46Speaker 3: most like Christ when my bride is meeting all of
- 7:51Speaker 3: my needs and satisfying all of my desires and I
- 7:54Speaker 3: am really not having to do much sacrificing or enduring
- 7:58Speaker 3: at all? Or am I more like Christ on the
- 8:05Speaker 3: hard days? when I'm having to dig deep, those are
- 8:12Speaker 3: the days when I realize how utterly dependent I am
- 8:20Speaker 3: on the power of Christ to do and be what
- 8:23Speaker 3: He's called me to do and be. Especially when I
- 8:26Speaker 3: realize that the overwhelming majority of the times what I'm
- 8:30Speaker 3: having difficulty with is my own failures bearing fruit. Amen, somebody.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Hang in there. By the power of Christ. Hang in there.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Thank you.
