Transcript
- 0:04Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:07Monday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:09Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours here to talk
- 0:13sports with you. Thank you for starting your
- 0:15afternoon with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:18program at the bottom of our number one, We will talk to our
- 0:21friend Scott Dockerman. He was in Madison at Camp
- 0:24Randall yesterday or yesterday, Saturday for that butt kicking,
- 0:28Iowa, Wisconsin. We'll recap that with Doc.
- 0:31He's got his latest College Football Playoff rankings.
- 0:34They published those this morning at the Athletics.
- 0:37So we'll see if there's any movement on how Doc forecast the
- 0:40College Football Playoff after this past week.
- 0:42Have to assume that there will be, especially with Indiana
- 0:45doing what they did. My God, so Scott Dockerman,
- 0:49we'll start things off then Bama Bob, Trent and I will talk
- 0:51college football. Look forward to doing that with
- 0:54our buddy Bama Bob and then Bill Seals will recap the Colorado
- 0:58loss. Take a look at the basketball is
- 1:01the men's basketball has a date over in Omaha against Creighton
- 1:05on Friday night. Mr. Monday night will be here.
- 1:08He's got a 2 pack of games to opine upon couple of baseball
- 1:12games if those float Mr. Monday night's boat.
- 1:15But All in all, a pretty darn a good day of sports lies ahead
- 1:20off a pretty good weekend of sports.
- 1:22Unless you're a Cubs fan. They went down in flames.
- 1:24Too bad, but I think the right team won.
- 1:26The better team won anyways. How are you TC?
- 1:29Not great. Got a headache.
- 1:30Now I'm feeling a little under the weather.
- 1:32One of our guests that we were going to have on today, Jeff
- 1:34Hughes, he's feeling the same out in New York.
- 1:36So I don't think they're related.
- 1:37Probably different. Yeah, I've had a headache and.
- 1:40I don't know. I don't have headaches very
- 1:41often, which is weird. I didn't very very rare, maybe
- 1:46outside of a a late night, but didn't have any of those this
- 1:48weekend so not sure what it is. But we will persevere and we got
- 1:52plenty to talk. About yeah, we really do
- 1:55football wise, college football is unbelievable.
- 1:57James Franklin is out. The NFL was really, really bad
- 1:59during the day, but then just when you think they're out here
- 2:03they come again. I'm I got to learn my lesson.
- 2:05I got to quit. I really do.
- 2:06They, they, they're taking years off my life.
- 2:10I'm just going to let them be them and not got all excited
- 2:13that it's finally over because it's not Anyways, I'm talking
- 2:16about Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, of course.
- 2:18Let's. I thought about you last night
- 2:20and I wondered what your game plan was because you hate watch
- 2:25the Chiefs. You hate watching that?
- 2:26I do you. You do not miss, no, if there's
- 2:28if the Broncos are playing, you don't miss a snap of the Chiefs.
- 2:31No, because I want them to lose. Right, so I knew you were locked
- 2:34in there. Yet the Blue Jays are playing,
- 2:36so we know what. It was like, it was like and I
- 2:38turned my phone off, OK. It was like I when I was state
- 2:41playing at the same time. That's what you did.
- 2:43Them both and watch some of it and catch up on the other one
- 2:46and go back and forth and I hate doing that but I don't want to
- 2:48know the score and I want to watch it both.
- 2:51So you were back and forth. That had to be a frustrating
- 2:53evening in both. Cases, yes, in both cases,
- 2:57that's for sure. Anyways, but yeah, give give the
- 2:59Chiefs full credit. They pasted the Detroit Lions, a
- 3:02team that I thought was pretty darn good coming into that one.
- 3:05I still think they're good. But the Chiefs just again, when
- 3:07you think it's over, it's not over.
- 3:09Let's let's go back to Saturday. Let's start with the winners,
- 3:13first of all, and that was the Hawkeye.
- 3:15Did Haiden Large catch the ball? Yeah, he did, didn't he?
- 3:18Didn't he bitch 'cause that's what, that's what, that's what
- 3:23makes me wonder. And yes, why didn't they even?
- 3:26Like put at the sidelines. In the grand scheme of things,
- 3:29if he's absolutely nothing other than for the kid in a 37 game,
- 3:35it would have been a highlight maybe.
- 3:36Who knows what he's going to go on to do, right?
- 3:39But that was going to be a hell of a catch on one of the most
- 3:43unlikely guys that's going to be down the field catching that
- 3:46length of pass. I thought he caught the
- 3:48football. I really did.
- 3:49That aside, my takeaways are a couple of them.
- 3:51How bad Wisconsin is? Oh, this is an awful football
- 3:55team. You know, that's one.
- 3:56I was dead wrong. I said the record wouldn't show
- 3:58it, but I thought they were going to be improved.
- 4:00And I know they've had injuries, but.
- 4:02That's bad trend. They're awful, awful.
- 4:04That's that's one of the worst Big 10 teams that have.
- 4:08That's not like the awful Northwest, Northwest or.
- 4:11Illinois and Indiana back in the day.
- 4:13This drags for a team that has some cache behind them.
- 4:17They're so bad they're supposed to be good against the run.
- 4:21That that was the one I would put.
- 4:22And those are my, that's my other takeaways.
- 4:24Williams and McNeil, yes, absolutely.
- 4:27I mean, we knew Moulton was good, but the other two, I mean,
- 4:29this Williams guy, you know, there's a lot of McNeil love out
- 4:32there. I get it.
- 4:33This McNeil, this Williams got some.
- 4:35There's a lot of things to like about him too.
- 4:38And I love the fact that Kaden Weejun's getting more involved
- 4:40in the offense now. God, he runs hard.
- 4:43He really does. You're ready for the Mark
- 4:45Gronowski conversation. Should he or shouldn't be
- 4:48playing? There were three different
- 4:51instances when I went back and watched it last night where he
- 4:55just stumbles running, rolling out, just stumbles.
- 4:59Brace. I don't think it's a brace.
- 5:01I think it's because the knee isn't secure.
- 5:03Yeah, just. Wonky, yes, I I think that's
- 5:05what it is. I mean when you can't play it
- 5:07and throw and then you look at the passing chart, it's not the
- 5:10now the field. Well, it's the large.
- 5:11It's the large. I wonder if a part of it is he
- 5:16wants to get the ball out quick knowing that mean take a hit,
- 5:18he's going to be taken. And yet, late the football game,
- 5:21there he is going around the left side running the football.
- 5:24What are you doing? Look at the scoreboard.
- 5:26And why he was still in there, that's a great question.
- 5:27As long as he was. And then who replaced him?
- 5:30Well, that's a story too. Another story.
- 5:32We'll get to that momentarily. But there were three different
- 5:34instances, him just in the pocket or rolling a little bit
- 5:38and you could just see kind of stumbles because of that knee.
- 5:41I mean, that's hugely concerning when you just can't even roll
- 5:45correctly because of instability in that knee.
- 5:48No, I saw people less to be well, he looks 7580%.
- 5:51I didn't think it's close. No, I don't think it's all.
- 5:53And if they need him quarterback draw in 3rd and four.
- 5:57No. Can you do it?
- 5:58I don't know. I was shocked that they had him
- 6:01sneak at the 1 yard line after the Aaron Gray's up.
- 6:04You know, Trent, I'm glad you brought the I seldom get out of
- 6:07my chair for either Iowa or Iowa State, right?
- 6:10I I just. You're a hardened.
- 6:12Veteran that and yeah, I mean I was out of my chair.
- 6:16I wanted him to score in the worst way.
- 6:18AI mean how does a defensive tackle, you know, pick the ball
- 6:22off the way he does? He was supposed to have contain,
- 6:25he said after the game. That's what he said.
- 6:26His assignment on that play was contained.
- 6:29He went out a little bit further than he was supposed to and look
- 6:31what I found. Look what I found to the oh God,
- 6:34I wish he would have scored. That would have been that would
- 6:36have been icing on the. Cam I mean just a great a kid
- 6:38that was playing a player football.
- 6:40Yeah, we hear about him. He graduates as a junior from
- 6:42high school. He'd already had his a a degree
- 6:45before he'd even graduated high school.
- 6:47He's played an 8 player, yet he's got offers from like
- 6:49Michigan and the like. I mean, how often does?
- 6:51And he's the best player on defense this year for Iowa.
- 6:53He stays home. We see him early on, he's
- 6:55playing a little bit and what he's developed into, yeah, that
- 6:58would have been icing on the cake.
- 7:00Bryce Hawthorne said that that was the first interception of
- 7:03his career. Was and that's the ball or the
- 7:07grace? First interception or.
- 7:09Hawthorne, the one that was deflected up pace.
- 7:11Deflected, I think. No, Is Brian Allen.
- 7:13Brian Allen got his hand in there that popped it up in the
- 7:16air. Bryce Hawthorne didn't have one
- 7:18at South Dakota State, didn't have one in high school, didn't
- 7:20even have one in pee wee football.
- 7:22First interception he has ever had in his career.
- 7:25I mean, when your defensive lineman are becoming the dough
- 7:26boys, it's pretty good. Yeah, I know.
- 7:28I'll say that was really good. Lots of things to get excited.
- 7:32Should we talk about Hecklinski? I mean, that's it's weird, isn't
- 7:36it? He wasn't the guy two weeks ago,
- 7:38right? Wasn't the next man in?
- 7:41Is it what they saw against Indiana from Hank Brown?
- 7:44Or that the one screen pass, that's that's the play there
- 7:47with that the one play. They're five and one right now.
- 7:49They complete a screen pass through five and one right now
- 7:51and nobody can dissuade me from that opinion.
- 7:53No, no, they, I'm, I'm with you. He was all he had, two offensive
- 7:57lineman in front of him. You throw that in the right
- 7:59spot, if he doesn't score, he's got the first down easily.
- 8:04Chip shot field goal. Iowa walks it off against
- 8:06Indiana. But here we are.
- 8:08So here's my theory on Heklinski.
- 8:11What we've seen the last two years now with Tim Lester at the
- 8:14helm is Iowa works a whole lot better their offense when they
- 8:18have a mobile quarterback. It's not that Hank Brown is
- 8:21Spencer Petrus, but he's it's more about the arm talent with
- 8:25him at Klinsky. He's got that wiggle, he's got
- 8:27that juice, he's got that mobility that I think they're
- 8:30looking for and it's. Been high on him since he got on
- 8:32campus. Absolutely.
- 8:33And then if it's close, and it obviously sounds like it is, and
- 8:36Kurt made went out of his way to mention that afterwards, but if
- 8:40it is close, they're going to go more with the guy that Lester
- 8:44wants. Yeah, the guy that can move
- 8:46around, the guy that has a little bit more athleticism.
- 8:49If it's close like it is, we saw Brendan Sullivan, what he was
- 8:51able to do, obviously Gronowski, when healthy, what he's been
- 8:54able to do. This offense works a whole lot
- 8:56better with the mobile quarterback.
- 8:58And I think that is why Hecklinski got the edge and is
- 9:01now the backup. Do you remember as we look
- 9:03forward to next week, what the look ahead line was?
- 9:06Penn State, Iowa. I do this summer it was 10 1/2.
- 9:08It was 10 at Penn State favorite 10 1/2, and it was now favored 3
- 9:121/2. I remember at the time, man,
- 9:14that's too many. I got 1.
- 9:15I think it's FanDuel. I had a line that I grabbed the
- 9:17tent at the summer. Yeah.
- 9:19And now do I try to middle it? No.
- 9:22No, just. Don't push your luck.
- 9:24Walk away happy that I got that in the back pocket and take that
- 9:27one. But what a absolute change.
- 9:30This Penn State team in two weeks spent as much money as
- 9:33anybody. Not just what they did on the
- 9:35roster and getting the running backs back and aller to come
- 9:37back and on and on and on. What they did in the portal,
- 9:40going out and getting 2 pretty good receivers and another one
- 9:43that certainly other programs wanted.
- 9:45I mean that is expensive. People called this the most
- 9:47expensive roster in college football history.
- 9:50But not only that, they also go out.
- 9:52They get Knowles. That wasn't cheap.
- 9:55Couldn't have been. Be one of the highest paid
- 9:56assistant coaches to be their defensive coordinator and you
- 10:00get slapped in the mouth by Northwestern at home.
- 10:03The week after you get slapped by UCUCL.
- 10:05A and the UCLA was weird and goofy and it's.
- 10:08Northwestern was at home. You but to lose that one at
- 10:11home, to get bullied by Northwestern in the UCLA game,
- 10:16You can come up with reasons or excuses, whatever terminology
- 10:19you want to use. This one, there's nothing.
- 10:21There's nothing. And then Franklin gets his
- 10:23walking paper. $49 million buyout yesterday.
- 10:25I was so disappointed. You wanted to.
- 10:27Get Oh, I want to see James Franklin with his tail between
- 10:30his legs so bad. He is the one of the most
- 10:31unlikable figures in college football.
- 10:34You know my disdain for him and to see that.
- 10:38But he walks away with a $49 million parachute.
- 10:41Yeah, good for him. The schadenfreude that I would
- 10:43have been able to have with James Franklin having to come in
- 10:46here. But doesn't he get that he's
- 10:47making 20 grand a day, every day, not just during the season,
- 10:51every. Doesn't he kind of get the last
- 10:53laugh? Well, it depends.
- 10:56I mean, where does Penn State go?
- 10:58I mean, if they go out and they win a national championship,
- 10:59Penn State gets the last. He's making 20 grand a day,
- 11:02Yeah. He's in good shape.
- 11:03Yeah, I'll say unbelievable. All right, Iowa State, Obviously
- 11:06the play that everybody talks about was the was the flag that
- 11:09was picked up. Why did they?
- 11:12Pick it up, I don't know the answer what?
- 11:14Is the question for the reason? Well, a, it was uncatchable.
- 11:19Was it was the ball? I don't think the ball was
- 11:21intercepted prior to the incident.
- 11:22But here's my problem with the incident.
- 11:25That's offensive pass interference too.
- 11:27You're not entitled to run through a guy.
- 11:29He stood his ground. Now he did reach his arms out
- 11:34and grab Bramer and grab, but was he falling back because
- 11:37Bramer was about to run through? Bramer can't do that right?
- 11:40That's initially what I thought the flag was going to be, OPI,
- 11:44offensive pass interference, right?
- 11:47And then when they come back now it's going to be defense.
- 11:49Oh, we're just going to pick up the flag, right?
- 11:52Would it have been better for this officiating crew to get
- 11:54together and say that was offensive pass interference?
- 11:58Or holding right, defensive holding.
- 12:01Well, defensive holding gets taken off the board, but yeah,
- 12:04to pick the flag up, though, there was something there.
- 12:08Yes, we bought. We all saw something.
- 12:10There was some we saw there. Bramer initiate the contract and
- 12:12contact the DB, grab out and pull him to the ground which he
- 12:16clearly did. The ball was picked off.
- 12:19Terrible throw, but rushed to our own with Rocco Beck, it's
- 12:22you know what you mentioned. Was it a time to have the the
- 12:25Gronowski conversation? Is it a time to have the Rocco
- 12:27Beck conversation? Because now it's his.
- 12:29Accuracy or his inaccuracy? Which has always been history.
- 12:33Yes, he is sailing balls. He is missing easy completions.
- 12:37Those are the passes you're just not used to.
- 12:39No, Rocco is not he's. Gonna have there was a couple of
- 12:42drops. It's not like, you know, every
- 12:43one of his incompletions was on him.
- 12:45It wasn't. But you knew with Rocco Beck,
- 12:47though, he doesn't have an elite arm.
- 12:49He's not going to wow the scouts or anything like that.
- 12:52It was the accuracy, and not just accuracy, getting the ball
- 12:55to the receiver, getting into the right spot, and that does
- 12:58not look like the same guy. This.
- 12:59Last, I mean, he still makes a few of those throws, but few and
- 13:02far between, right? Abu Sama was terrific.
- 13:04Yes, he was he. Was really good.
- 13:06There's RB-1. There's RB-1 now.
- 13:08Now it's, that's an interesting point when they come back from
- 13:11there by I think he's, I think he did enough yesterday or or
- 13:14Saturday to earn that with Hanson.
- 13:18I'm going to continue to beat this drum.
- 13:21Xavier Townsend needs more touches.
- 13:23They need to. He had that one drive where he
- 13:24had what, back-to-back catches, I think it was or two out of
- 13:27three plays, whatever it was. He had the little jet sweep
- 13:30thing that they got to carry on, but outside of that, get that
- 13:33guy involved. Eli Green was involved on that
- 13:35play on the sidelines. He been a hell of a catch.
- 13:37That was a good throw. I think I think Xavier Townsend
- 13:40needs to be a bigger part of this offense.
- 13:42I think a guy with that kind of speed, that kind of ability.
- 13:44I mean, we saw with Jalen Noel what what he was able to unlock
- 13:47with this offense and they're just missing it.
- 13:49As good as those tight ends are, we know it's so well, minimum is
- 13:53solid, you know, a solid receiver.
- 13:55I'm with you. I think the missing dynamic here
- 13:57is somebody, that slot guy that can do some things.
- 14:00And I think it's Townsend that needs to be more.
- 14:01Involved. Eskelson had a couple of drops.
- 14:03It's not like him. How about you got to feel for
- 14:05River Peppers? First touch.
- 14:07One touch. And now he's done for the year.
- 14:10And you knew right away, I mean, when you go down in a heap like
- 14:12that, a non contact injury. Yep, it's rolling up the back of
- 14:15his calf or something. We're sports doctors, we're not
- 14:17real doctors. And that one I think we all knew
- 14:20right away. This isn't good.
- 14:21That thing's torn. Yeah, this is not good. 3rd 4th
- 14:26straight year now for Iowa State.
- 14:27Lose their first game of the season.
- 14:30Come back a week later on the road as favorites and lose
- 14:33back-to-back games 4 consecutive years.
- 14:36That's right. You brought that up on Friday.
- 14:38Yeah. That I don't know if there's a
- 14:41reason or explanation, but something deflates this team.
- 14:44So where does the team go from here?
- 14:47I think they're cooked. As far as the Big 12 champions?
- 14:50Yeah, I mean in contention. Well, look, Texas Tech looks
- 14:53like they're on a different level.
- 14:55Yeah, absolutely. Utah looks like they're on a
- 14:56different level to me. Arizona State, they they just
- 15:00took, they took Arizona State to the woodshed.
- 15:02Look, BYUI watched some of the BYU Arizona game until the
- 15:05delay. We saw Arizona there.
- 15:10BYU's kind of, you know, there's that there's a whole bunch of
- 15:13teams in the middle. We thought, I thought Iowa State
- 15:15was on that second tier. I'm not sure there is a second
- 15:18tier, right? I think there's maybe the second
- 15:20tier is Utah, right? And then there's the other tier
- 15:24of everybody else not named Oklahoma State or West Virginia,
- 15:28But look, they took out all of Iowa State's air, quote, tougher
- 15:34games. Well, maybe TCU is tough, but I
- 15:37was surprised TCU got beat. Arizona State's at home.
- 15:39BYU is at home. Kansas is at home.
- 15:44I, I, I, I still think that there's seven and 58 and 14.
- 15:48Right where they were pre season projections.
- 15:50But I don't think that they're going to make them.
- 15:52I don't think they're going to get back to the conference
- 15:55championship. And you know what, Cyclone fans,
- 15:57if that's the case, that's going to take one of your options off
- 16:01the board. It's going to make it easy for
- 16:02you to turn on and watch Iowa State play for two at the same
- 16:05time as the Big 12 championship game.
- 16:07Yes, right. Makes it easier for you don't
- 16:09have to watch the football game because you're going to, you're
- 16:11going to see your squad go up against the number one team in
- 16:14the country. Speaking of, that preseason AP
- 16:17poll is out for men's basketball.
- 16:18The Cyclones check in at #16 How many?
- 16:21Big 12 teams. Let's see Houston, BYU, Texas
- 16:29Tech, Arizona, Iowa State. So 4 ahead of Iowa State.
- 16:35Yep, Kansas at 19. That's weird to me, Kansas,
- 16:38that. Far down and that's it.
- 16:40That's it. Out of I mean all.
- 16:41Right. Give me the Big 10 schools.
- 16:43The Big 10, you have Purdue #1 #1, Purdue, Michigan at #7 you
- 16:49have UCLA at #12 I like that UCLA team.
- 16:53Hopefully Cronin is not bitching about his travel this year.
- 16:55No, they always. Do I know Illinois at #17
- 17:00Michigan State at 22, Wisconsin at 24, Others receiving votes.
- 17:05The Iowa Hawkeyes received 6 votes.
- 17:08I think like 11 teams in front of them, something like that.
- 17:10So 36, if you will, in the preseason poll.
- 17:13Is there a Valley team on the list?
- 17:15Probably not, no. I wouldn't be surprised.
- 17:18I'm going through others receiving votes.
- 17:20Anything there? Nobody.
- 17:22Nope. All right, we've got Scott
- 17:24Docherman. We'll get to him at the bottom
- 17:26of our number one, which is in like 11 minutes or so.
- 17:29We'll get Doc in here. I'll do a couple of minutes on
- 17:31the NFL. Either we'll do that prior to
- 17:34Doc or after Doc. I thought the NFL slated games
- 17:37yesterday during during the day was as bad as we've seen in a
- 17:41long, long time. Just just, they were just bad
- 17:44games. Maybe the best match up would
- 17:48have been San Francisco and Tampa Bay.
- 17:51That was a relatively good. Game and Baker doing it.
- 17:55Is he the MVP at this point of the year?
- 17:57Same for two weeks. He has to be, doesn't he, With
- 18:01an office? He was back.
- 18:02In the conversation though. Mahomes, of course, yeah.
- 18:05Did he ever leave? No.
- 18:06No, maybe in the middle of the household, but at other places,
- 18:10not so much. Baker doing it now with an
- 18:12offensive line. That was so I was watching what?
- 18:16Excuse me, the the 4th guard of the season right guard came in
- 18:20for the Buccaneers and the commentator said I don't even
- 18:23know who's going to come in. Like it's at that point is that
- 18:26laughable? They're to their 4th right guard
- 18:28of. Like Iowa states kicker the six
- 18:31foot 8300 and get it off. What was the kids name that came
- 18:35in to kick? I don't.
- 18:36Is it Dylan? He's a kid from up there.
- 18:39He's a small kid, town kid from up there, Offensive lineman in
- 18:42there. 6-8 is that what he is? He's big dude, Big dude coming
- 18:46in to kick. Three bills plus, I mean, it
- 18:48looked like a high school game where he had.
- 18:49He did kick off once. He did kick off once and the
- 18:52ball went didn't get any height to it.
- 18:54He was getting kicking 30 yarders in pregame.
- 18:56I think Alec maybe had that. I saw one of the commentators
- 18:59had that before the game. But you know, back to the
- 19:02Buccaneers now. You do it, you lose a Buca.
- 19:06In the middle of the game. Hamstring, yeah.
- 19:08And did you see the was it Tez Johnson, the kid that had caught
- 19:11the big pass for them? He's we're sort of like their
- 19:13six wide receiver after the game.
- 19:16He's watching Green Bay until late in late in the day.
- 19:18Oh, you were hoping. No, I just.
- 19:20You're rooting against me, weren't you?
- 19:21No, I didn't want to put YouTube on.
- 19:24I see this quote from Bobby. He's talking to a teammate in
- 19:28the sideline. He's like, man, I haven't even
- 19:29done anything. They're cheating MVP at him, at
- 19:31me, Steve said. No, no, they're they're chanting
- 19:34MVP for Baker, not you. He goes, Oh yeah, that makes
- 19:37more sense. So he's got a little sense of
- 19:39humor. Yes, that was pretty good.
- 19:41This this Tampa Bay team, though, they're fun, they're
- 19:43entertaining. They.
- 19:46Are legit. Are the best team in the NFC.
- 19:52Who else would be? Who would you?
- 19:55Commanders. Packers Eagles cross them off.
- 19:59Yeah, I'm with you. I'm just trying.
- 20:02I'm not willing to cross off Seattle.
- 20:06So Sam Darnold's gonna take their team to the Super?
- 20:08If I would have said that two years ago about Baker Mayfield,
- 20:11that's true. They were both air quote busts.
- 20:15The last two games of last year are gonna linger for a long time
- 20:17for me and Sam Darnold. Yeah.
- 20:19And when it gets to that point, he can take Seattle to a
- 20:22division championship. He can take him to the playoffs.
- 20:25Yeah, but until I see it in that kind of game, what happened in
- 20:29final game of the regular season, the first game of the
- 20:31playoffs, I struggled to get there with Sam.
- 20:33Dart, I wanna put, I wanna leave the lions in the conversation.
- 20:36They they ran into a bus all. Last they did.
- 20:38They did commanders. Not yet.
- 20:42Not yet, not yet. Packers.
- 20:46Not really. Something seems off there.
- 20:48Yep, I'm with you, something, I'm with you.
- 20:50They're three, one and one. I don't like the ramps I did
- 20:53before this season. I'm not not in love with the
- 20:56Rams. The.
- 20:56Fred Warner injury for the 49ers.
- 20:58I mean, it goes on top of everything else, right?
- 21:01You're just taking it to a complete Fred Warner as a middle
- 21:04linebacker. As good as there is.
- 21:05The the depth that he gets, the ability to come up and then
- 21:08defend the pass, he is, he's just all work for the last what,
- 21:118 years? A middle linebacker just a year
- 21:13after you take that away. Good luck, Good luck.
- 21:17I'm with you. I there just aren't a whole lot
- 21:19of teams to wrap your arms around.
- 21:21I I think it's the bucket ears and then a gap.
- 21:23Do the AFC. Oh boy, OK.
- 21:27You put the Steelers on the list, They're four and one.
- 21:29No, I don't either. I don't put them in my top five.
- 21:31I don't. I'm with you Colts, that's for
- 21:34sure. That was an impressive 1.
- 21:36Arizona, Kobe percent. Whatever the reason was to find
- 21:40a way to win. Win your clunkers, right?
- 21:42That was a clunker, and they found a way to get that done.
- 21:45So do you want to put Denver in there because they won a
- 21:47clunker? They won one of the worst games
- 21:49I've ever seen in the NFL. How do you hold a team to under
- 21:52100 yards just to not get 100 yards of offense?
- 21:56And what a shoulda coulda yeah what a shoulda coulda yes yeah 9
- 22:00sacks of the game he almost loose yes it's I can't put them
- 22:04in that tier because yes the win against Eagles was nice
- 22:08impressive win, but I have my. Own I'm with you.
- 22:11I I do, too. Buffalo's on the list.
- 22:13Here's a team I'm going to ask you about.
- 22:15Patriots. Look at their schedule.
- 22:17Yes. Yeah, they're going to win.
- 22:19They're going to win a lot of games, yes, I'm with you on the
- 22:22Colts, obviously the Chiefs, Chargers.
- 22:25Chiefs are out of the playoffs right now if it started today.
- 22:28Good. Let's start today.
- 22:30Is there any chance we can? Move that not not going to
- 22:32happen. I don't think the NFL is going
- 22:33to punt the season to keep Kansas City out.
- 22:35Don't think that one's going to happen.
- 22:37But yeah, the outside looking in right now are the Caitlin.
- 22:39Clark and Taylor Swift's box last.
- 22:41Night No. Yeah, first time they showed the
- 22:44Taylor Swift's box, they Caitlin Clark was right beside her and
- 22:49Tirico pointed at home. Pointed out that might have been
- 22:52on baseball at the time, or putting the kids to bed, or
- 22:54putting in the shower or bath or whatever.
- 22:55What's you think of the baseball game last night?
- 22:57I thought it was going to be 100 and nothing.
- 22:58Toronto after Springer hit the first pitch.
- 23:01Here we go. Yeah.
- 23:03And then they got one more hit. What?
- 23:04Yeah, to hold the game. Yes.
- 23:06In the game, Miller, that was a goody performance.
- 23:09He was really, he's not a strikeout guy.
- 23:11He just found a way. I liked Seattle going into the
- 23:15game. I did too.
- 23:16I thought the layoff might have been an impactful kind of
- 23:18carrying that momentum over, but it's not a game where you had to
- 23:22go right away. You know, you didn't have to
- 23:23play the next game. They I thought that's.
- 23:25Why? I thought Seattle was going to
- 23:26be fine. Yeah.
- 23:27And obviously that they were trial and trouble.
- 23:30I mean, is it panic button time? Well, after you, you savage
- 23:34pitches today and he's due for about, I hate to say it, you
- 23:37can't be this good. Baseball's a tough game to play
- 23:41and he's owned it. What about the National League?
- 23:46You want to give Milwaukee a? Shot.
- 23:47I absolutely want to give Milwaukee a shot.
- 23:50There's something we might get Seattle in Milwaukee.
- 23:55Great for fans. It's great.
- 23:56I love. It something new.
- 23:58Baseball's not rooting for that. No, no, no, no.
- 24:02They want the Dodgers. There.
- 24:03They want honey there. Yes, absolutely.
- 24:05They want Dodgers against Seattle because they don't want
- 24:09the Canadian team in there. Doesn't matter, doesn't matter
- 24:11in the meter. We'll take a time.
- 24:13I will come back. Scott Dockerman is going to join
- 24:14us. Prior to doing that though,
- 24:16we'll let you know that the just because it's a holiday for some
- 24:19of you out there, the keyword contest marches on.
- 24:22Head to kxono.com right now. You can enter this keyword
- 24:27credit credit at kxono.com. Your chance to win $1000 in this

- 24:39Monday, Scott Dockerman. Next it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 24:42Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 24:44back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 24:46Trent Condon, Ken Miller, we are here until 2O clock.
- 24:49Let's get to our friend Scott, Doctor Mooney, he covers college
- 24:52football for The Athletic. He joins us.
- 24:54He was in Madison on Saturday night.
- 24:57We'll get to that in a second. Doc, good to speak with you.
- 25:00I appreciate you coming on as always.
- 25:02I guess we have to start with James Franklin.
- 25:04And just where does Penn State go from here?
- 25:06Why now? Why do you think they did it?
- 25:09Span of 13 days from the double overtime loss to the UCLA to
- 25:13debacle to Northwestern pushing them around at home.
- 25:18Just crazy that it could have happened this quick.
- 25:21Not saying was the wrong decision Doc, just just what
- 25:25what a difference two weeks can make.
- 25:28Yeah, they were winning in overtime against Oregon in a
- 25:31Saturday night game where you felt like, OK, if they hold on,
- 25:35they're, they're going to be the, you know, you know,
- 25:38potentially #1 or #2 and set up a one versus 2 game against Ohio
- 25:43State to lose an at UCLA and then home against Northwest.
- 25:48It's, it seems obvious to me, you know, this.
- 25:50I listened to the press conference this morning.
- 25:52And you know what, what isn't being said is it's just the
- 25:56donors are tapped out on Franklin and, and you've got to
- 26:00have that trust factor and, and he's built equity and being a
- 26:04good program, but they just can't take the next step.
- 26:08And at Penn State, you've got to take the next step once in a
- 26:10while. And every time they've come
- 26:12close or you think they're going to get to that next level, they
- 26:17fall short. And I, I point to 2017 when they
- 26:20had Saquon Barkley and they were in the top five and they never
- 26:24quite got there. And then 2021 when they came to
- 26:26Kinnick and it was a three versus 4 game and they ended up
- 26:307 and six. And, and I think this year was
- 26:33obviously shaping up to be the same, probably way more
- 26:36disappointing than even the previous two.
- 26:38So I don't know that you can convince people in today's era,
- 26:42the NIL era and then the transfer portal era that, that
- 26:45you're going to be able to, to continue to, to hop back on that
- 26:48horse the way you did kind of before everything went down.
- 26:51So it, it seems like people are starting to tap out.
- 26:54The mood was getting really surly and they they did what
- 26:58they did. On the local front, is this a
- 27:00good thing or a bad thing for Iowa to have Penn State coming
- 27:03in? We saw Happy with UCLA after
- 27:05Foster got fired, and they look like a completely different
- 27:08thing from the Hawkeye perspective.
- 27:10Is it good news that Franklin is gone or bad news?
- 27:13It's a great question. I think it comes down to how
- 27:16does Penn State compete emotionally and how do they, how
- 27:21do they prepare and compete fundamentally because they've
- 27:24been bad fundamentally. They have an incredible amount
- 27:27of talent. Their talent is way better than
- 27:28Iowa, so it's not close. However, they have been pushed
- 27:32around on both sides of the ball, offensive line, defensive
- 27:35line, and they shouldn't be doing that because they are
- 27:37really good. They have good players, I should
- 27:39say, and yet they have not really performed up to
- 27:42expectations even in those three layup games that they had in the
- 27:46non conference. I mean they didn't play very
- 27:48well. So I think you know that that's
- 27:50the thing with emotional teams. I think we saw it a little bit
- 27:53with Wisconsin on Saturday is emotionally carries you a little
- 27:56bit far. And then once you get punched in
- 27:58the mouth, how do your fundamentals react?
- 28:00And I think for Iowa, it's, you know, be aggressive early.
- 28:05And I'm not saying be aggressive like throw on 4th and five or
- 28:08anything. I just mean be very physical
- 28:10with them and power past them to the point where their their
- 28:14emotions are gone and then it's, you know, then then forget it.
- 28:18And I think that and ultimately I think it's probably a good
- 28:21thing, but I think a bigger deal is Drew Al or not being there.
- 28:24For sure, no doubt about it. Well, let's let's take a look at
- 28:28Saturday night. Obviously, Wisconsin doc I I'm
- 28:31sure that there are other examples of teams who, you know,
- 28:34once we're kind of revered as one of those teams that we're
- 28:37going to have to beat this team. And if you want to get to to
- 28:40where you want to get to, you're going to have to get through
- 28:42this team at some point. Wisconsin was always one of
- 28:44those teams, whether it be in the, you know, the division of
- 28:47the Big 10 or what have you. I can't believe how far they
- 28:50have fallen. Doc.
- 28:51That was an embarrassingly bad performance out of Wisconsin.
- 28:54I want to give Iowa more credit, I do, but it was just awful
- 28:58watching this Wisconsin team or what's was was one of the upper
- 29:02echelon teams in the conference. It's a shocker and it was a
- 29:06shocker earlier in the year when I'm watching them think play
- 29:09like Miami of Ohio and they won like 17 and nothing.
- 29:12But it was just they were lifeless on offense.
- 29:15And then the Maryland game. But coming into Iowa, they put
- 29:18every chip in that basket. You know, from January on, you
- 29:22know, 42 to 10 that we should never be beaten by Iowa, 42 to
- 29:2610. They're going to do 42 push ups
- 29:28in the preseason after every practice to get ready for this.
- 29:32And all of that emotion mattered 0 because I was motivated too.
- 29:36It is a rivalry game after all. And, and they wanted to go and,
- 29:40and, and run him over like a Zamboni, which they did on both
- 29:43sides of the ball. But I it, it's, it's hard to
- 29:45remember A-Team that's fallen this far this fast.
- 29:48And then their future schedule, You know, they play, they only
- 29:51play #1 Ohio State this week, then they play Oregon, then
- 29:54Washington IN which may be the best team in the country right
- 29:57now, Illinois, who I still think is pretty decent.
- 30:01And then they wrap up with Minnesota.
- 30:03And I don't think the Gophers will take it easy on him either.
- 30:05And, and so I, I mean, when you look at that, I, I, I said it
- 30:09last week that I would be more surprised if they beat Iowa than
- 30:13I would if they go, oh, and nine and the big 10.
- 30:16And, and I think what it is, it's a it's a, it's a cautionary
- 30:20tale for Iowa because we know the Kirk Ference era isn't going
- 30:24to last forever. And when they do hire a new
- 30:27coach, you've got to remain true to your identity as a program.
- 30:32And no matter who's calling the plays, I mean, you can do things
- 30:35out of it that's different, but you don't want to get to a
- 30:38position to where you stray from who you are as a program.
- 30:42I think Chris Klein did an outstanding job at Kansas State
- 30:45of doing that of of maintaining, but you're doing his own tweaks,
- 30:49but maintaining the principles. Luke Fickle did a horrible job
- 30:52of that because Wisconsin was always known for outstanding
- 30:55defense and they were gap sound and their integrity was great.
- 30:59They were they were very physical and then their
- 31:02offensive line as we know was blew people off the ball and
- 31:04they had a great running back. They are none of those things
- 31:06right now. And and when you lose it, then
- 31:10you allow everybody else to fill that vacuum like like Iowa and
- 31:13the Chicagoland or Indiana across the board.
- 31:15And it is really tough to get it back now.
- 31:18They can, but it's going to take a lot of time, I think.
- 31:21And a cautionary tale for Iowa whenever Kirk Ference hangs it
- 31:24up. I definitely remember what we've
- 31:26seen out of the Badgers last week.
- 31:28He had a fun article up at the Athletic, the Beer Highway.
- 31:32Take us into that one a little bit, Doc.
- 31:33And we know that you like to imbibe and you enjoy yourself a
- 31:36a cold 1. So take us into the Beer
- 31:38Highway. Yeah, thanks.
- 31:41It was, It's an idea that I've had for a while because I just,
- 31:45you know, this the, the route, you know, from Iowa City to
- 31:48Madison is, is filled with, well, with beer.
- 31:51I mean, especially you get to Dubuque across the river and
- 31:55into the Wisconsin. And, and so I, I kind of wanted
- 31:59to, to take a take everybody through this area.
- 32:02That's a little bit different. Not not exactly a traditional
- 32:05story, but what is life like when I was football connect
- 32:08everybody and then what's, you know, how does beer kind of
- 32:12impact it? And I, I thought, you know, I
- 32:15wanted to hit as many spots as I could.
- 32:17I figured 5 was a good spot with Dubuque kind of being the
- 32:20centrally located one. But, and then there are others.
- 32:24I mean, I could have definitely throughout the course.
- 32:27Potosi, Wisconsin was one thought about.
- 32:30But overall it, it was a lot of fun to be able to do that and
- 32:34catch up with my old battery mate, Martin Morehouse.
- 32:36I figured there's nobody who I know who knows Dubuque Beer and
- 32:43I Wisconsin more than him. So I thought that was he was
- 32:46really fun to catch up with him and go around.
- 32:49And as you can imagine, I left a lot on the cutting room floor.
- 32:51But overall, it was, it was a lot of fun to be able to write
- 32:54that. And Doc, I'm one that likes to
- 32:57read the comments afterwards and just the positive comments and
- 33:00how I've been down that road. Oh, I miss it.
- 33:03That's what struck me, Doc, is how you struck a nerve with so a
- 33:06positive nerve with so many people in that piece.
- 33:10Well, that's great. And, you know, I, I, I usually
- 33:12stay away from them because I did like Bolt or CFP projections
- 33:16this weekend. And I know we come.
- 33:18So I'm like, I'm not even going to pay attention, you know.
- 33:21But with, with this one, it was, it's fun because, yeah, that's
- 33:25one thing about football that we all should understand is that I,
- 33:30I think, you know, we got 2 pretty good programs in this
- 33:32state that I don't know that either one of them is going to
- 33:35really get a chance to win a national title at, you know,
- 33:38anytime soon. But the experiences that you
- 33:41have with football and with everything that goes around with
- 33:44it is something that everybody holds dear.
- 33:46I mean, you remember your, your all day tailgate at Jack Trice
- 33:49or at at Kinnock Stadium or when the trip up to Madison or or
- 33:54whatever. And those are the things that
- 33:55stick with you, the memories even more so than the wins and
- 33:58losses. And and I hope that everybody
- 34:01kind of enjoys that aspect of it because it's certainly, you
- 34:04know, whether it's I wrote Iowa State is Bush like you about 5
- 34:07or 6 years ago. And I love that.
- 34:09And and this one was certainly fun too.
- 34:11You mentioned your article, the latest at The Athletic as you
- 34:14put together the bracket as it's currently constructed, looking
- 34:18forward, are we trending to another season?
- 34:21We're trying to figure out that nine and three team to maybe nab
- 34:23the last at large spot. Is it feel like with kind of the
- 34:26jumbled mess that is the SEC, maybe the Big 10's going to turn
- 34:29out the same way that it's going to be back arguing about a nine
- 34:32and three team getting in? Yeah, I think so.
- 34:35And, and I think this is, it's going to be tough for tougher
- 34:38for a Big 12 and an ACC team to, to breakthrough that because
- 34:42when you start to look at the SEC, there's, there's seven or
- 34:45eight teams and they're all ranked.
- 34:46And, and The thing is, they're all pretty decent.
- 34:49And I think in the Big 10, there's a cut off after the top
- 34:52three. But, but I think you've got
- 34:53about three or four teams that kind of enter that discussion or
- 34:57could enter that discussion at 9:00 and 3:00.
- 34:59You know, whether it's USC or maybe Illinois gets back into
- 35:03it, Michigan, if they went out and beat their friends from
- 35:07Columbus or, or potentially even Iowa, if, if Iowa gets on a roll
- 35:11here, I think all of them could enter that conversation.
- 35:13So it's it's something that I think that is going to happen.
- 35:18It's gonna be a trigger point. And I wonder if let's say the
- 35:236th, you know, SEC team gets in and it's a nine and three team
- 35:28and over a say 11 and 2 Georgia Tech or, you know, whoever's
- 35:33second in the Big 12. If that shifts the the thought
- 35:37process for Jim Phillips, for Brett, your mark, you know,
- 35:41maybe we need to to look at more guarantees going forward.
- 35:44And then I think that's something that's they they need
- 35:47to really consider because otherwise you're going to get
- 35:50shut down, especially with the SEC going to 9 games because
- 35:53then you might get an 8 and four team in that conversation.
- 35:56Is USC Notre Dame a playoff game this week?
- 35:58Doc Seems like it is for Notre Dame.
- 36:02It is for Notre Dame for sure. I mean, I Notre Dame has two
- 36:04quality losses, but you look at that schedule, they don't have
- 36:07any quality wins ahead of them and they could be tended to.
- 36:11And, you know, even if they beat SC, you know, 2724 doesn't
- 36:15guarantee them anything. Again, with that SEC schedule.
- 36:18And and again, some of these other teams in the Big 10, you
- 36:20know, can really enter that fray, but they'll get the
- 36:23benefit of the doubt on name recognition, but probably not
- 36:26much else. And then so, yeah, I believe
- 36:28definitely for the Irish and I think for for USC it it's their
- 36:33last gasp because then that would give them their second
- 36:35lost and then they're going to have to beat somebody like
- 36:37Oregon to make sure that they they put themselves in that
- 36:40position. Scott Dockerman joining us.
- 36:43Great stuff, Doc. I loved your piece on the the
- 36:46Beer Highway and and obviously I look forward to your College
- 36:49Football Playoff bracket each and every Monday.
- 36:51Doc. We'll talk to you next Monday if
- 36:53your schedule allows. Thank you, Scott.
- 36:54Appreciate it as always. OK.
- 36:57Have a good one guys. Thank you.
- 36:58Very much Scott Dockerman from the athletic as we take a look
- 37:01back at Wisconsin, Iowa, Big 10 and college football in general.
- 37:05We'll take a time out come back finish up our number one Bama
- 37:08bomb and Bill Seals and our number 2 and Mr. Monday night
- 37:12it's Miller and Condon on the Iowa sports Radio network.
- 37:15My final couple of minutes first hour of the program Bama Bob
- 37:18Trenton I recap the week in college football Bill Seals on
- 37:21Iowa State Mr. Monday night coming up circus sports sponsors
- 37:25that so Frank Franklin out is ruled is he the I mean, should
- 37:30he be the favorite? I believe he is the favorite.
- 37:33He's the betting favorite. Walked down to Penn State, A lot
- 37:35of connections there. His good buddies the AD
- 37:38absolutely together a temple. Yep, I mean just a whole lot of
- 37:42dots. What?
- 37:42Does that, What does that do for the fan base?
- 37:45A Penn State. Yes.
- 37:46I think they look at the reclamation projects one of
- 37:49their own I that very well could help.
- 37:52I don't have a great feel big. 10 hasn't gone well.
- 37:56For rule. For rule, there's 65 and one
- 37:59this year. This year, but.
- 38:00Overall, yeah, it was a rebuild. That program was garbage.
- 38:03Yeah. And he's pulling them out.
- 38:06I got. To a bowl game last.
- 38:07Year. Yeah.
- 38:07First time in how long? Long time, Yeah.
- 38:10I mean, we can't think of Nebraska like we think of
- 38:12Nebraska. We have to think of it.
- 38:13What the program actually? Is that's fair?
- 38:15Yep, that's fair. Matt Campbell's on the list.
- 38:18He's behind Rule and Signetti. And people nationally said
- 38:22there's only a few jobs that Matt Campbell would entertain.
- 38:25It's got to be a blue blood. And he entertained USC.
- 38:28He did it was it got to the doorstep.
- 38:31Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC, those are the kind
- 38:35of programs he's not leaving for Indiana.
- 38:38Fact, he's open if Signetti goes there.
- 38:40Who is a Pennsylvania guy, by the way?
- 38:42He's not leaving for a mini step.
- 38:44Does Signetti's age work against him at this point?
- 38:47Because rules what? 50 ish I don't think you can
- 38:50look at age. He's 63, Signetti.
- 38:53If he again, it's about delivering a national
- 38:55championship, what he's doing at Indiana.
- 38:58Are they the best team in the country?
- 39:01They have the best resume in the country.
- 39:02They do. They do.
- 39:04There's nobody that has a better win, I thought.
- 39:06Oregon would get him, I thought. Oregon would get him.
- 39:08And then Iowa wins. Looking better.
- 39:10Oh man. You mean the potential of an I
- 39:14will win? No, the four Indiana.
- 39:16Oh, I see what you say. Yeah, all of a sudden it does
- 39:18look better if they can be Penn State, too.
- 39:20Yep, man, he's he's he's miracle workers.
- 39:25What he is their? Overall roster rankings from one
- 39:28of the ranking systems 72nd in the country, Indiana, in terms
- 39:31of raw talent. God Hour 2 coming up next Des
