Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: In 2007, leaping his way onto the silver screen, the
- 0:06Speaker 1: greatest hero in American history. I forgot what I was
- 0:11Speaker 1: supposed to say.
- 0:13Speaker 2: The Simpsons movie, opening worldwide, July 27th, 2007.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Uh-oh, we better get started. Four-finger discount, dude.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Hey guys, welcome to Four Finger Discount, a very special
- 0:41Speaker 2: episode of Four Finger Discount where this week we're going
- 0:43Speaker 2: to be touching on our favourite memories of the Simpsons
- 0:45Speaker 2: movie and I'm joined right now by Chris Stanley, how
- 0:47Speaker 2: are you sir?
- 0:48Speaker 1: Dando, thank you very much for having me mate, always
- 0:50Speaker 1: a pleasure.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Always a pleasure to have you on the show. So
- 0:53Speaker 2: another Simpsons movie is coming out 20 years in between.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Can you believe it?
- 0:57Speaker 1: No, and I'm not okay with it. It was my,
- 1:00Speaker 1: what year did you graduate high school?
- 1:01Speaker 2: It was 2006. So it was the year after I
- 1:03Speaker 2: graduated that it came out.
- 1:04Speaker 1: But you're the same as me. I'm a 06 graduate.
- 1:07Speaker 1: So it was a big deal, like huge deal. And
- 1:10Speaker 1: it took them long enough. But now we're at like
- 1:12Speaker 1: 20 years and obviously D23s just happened. We got a
- 1:15Speaker 1: bit to talk about. We do.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I remember when it first came out, it felt like
- 1:19Speaker 2: a big deal to me. but not really to my
- 1:21Speaker 2: friends because my friends had sort of stopped watching The Simpsons,
- 1:24Speaker 2: but I was still known as like The Simpsons guy
- 1:25Speaker 2: in my friendship group. But I feel like it was
- 1:28Speaker 2: close enough to like peak Simpsons era where people still
- 1:32Speaker 2: cared enough about The Simpsons. This one here, I was
- 1:36Speaker 2: a bit concerned about. Even like three or four years
- 1:37Speaker 2: ago when they announced there's a new Simpsons movie coming out,
- 1:39Speaker 2: I'm thinking, who's going to care? I mean, I'm going
- 1:42Speaker 2: to care, but are people really going to care? And
- 1:45Speaker 2: I thought more and more about it. And I think
- 1:46Speaker 2: right now is almost the perfect time because... You and I,
- 1:50Speaker 2: we grew up in the 90s watching The Simpsons. It
- 1:52Speaker 2: was just what everybody did. It was the show, right?
- 1:55Speaker 2: We're now old enough to have grown up and had
- 1:58Speaker 2: our own kids. And now our kids are being introduced
- 2:01Speaker 2: to the show by us. So now they're essentially two
- 2:04Speaker 2: generations of Simpsons fans. Where when we were growing up,
- 2:08Speaker 2: adults watched The Simpsons, but it wasn't a show for adults.
- 2:11Speaker 2: It was basically the kids' generation show. Now we've got
- 2:15Speaker 2: the adults who grew up watching the show and our
- 2:17Speaker 2: kids watching the show. So there's two generations of fans...
- 2:20Speaker 2: The kids are going to want to go see it
- 2:21Speaker 2: and we're going to want to go watch it with them. So,
- 2:23Speaker 2: I think now is a really perfect time to release
- 2:25Speaker 2: another Simpsons movie.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I think, yeah, you're spot on. And I think when
- 2:30Speaker 1: the first one came out, obviously, it did very, very well.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And I think, personally, that's the best Simpsons movie we
- 2:38Speaker 1: could have got at the time.
- 2:40Speaker 2: You reckon?
- 2:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I wasn't the hugest fan of it. I just remember
- 2:44Speaker 2: feeling like walking out going, I enjoyed it because it
- 2:47Speaker 2: was The Simpsons. But I think my expectations- I think
- 2:50Speaker 2: it's my own fault. You're probably right. You probably are
- 2:52Speaker 2: actually right. But me, myself, you know when you're a
- 2:55Speaker 2: massive- like a Star Wars nerd or a Simpsons nerd
- 2:57Speaker 2: or whatever, and you go into these movies of what
- 2:59Speaker 2: you think the movie should be, and it's not that.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And automatically, you think, well, it's not good. It's like, no,
- 3:02Speaker 2: it's not that it's not good. It's just not what
- 3:04Speaker 2: you wanted. Yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 1: But when you care so much about a franchise, movies, characters, whatever, obviously,
- 3:12Speaker 1: it just means you just care so much and you
- 3:15Speaker 1: just want it to do good. But I think as well,
- 3:17Speaker 1: I think my mates and I, because opposite of you,
- 3:20Speaker 1: like me and my mates were still obsessed with The Simpsons.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And when it came out, it was like, this was
- 3:25Speaker 1: huge for us. This was massive. So I think we
- 3:28Speaker 1: went in tapering our expectations because we felt so much
- 3:31Speaker 1: time had passed since they announced it. I remember Cheese TV,
- 3:34Speaker 1: the fellows on Cheese TV were like, yep, new Simpsons
- 3:37Speaker 1: movie in development. I remember reading Disney Adventures in the
- 3:41Speaker 1: 90s and they go, Simpsons movie in development. So it
- 3:43Speaker 1: took that long. And I feel like I don't know
- 3:47Speaker 1: if you, like the incubation of when the seed was planted,
- 3:50Speaker 1: when they first started planning the movie, like was it
- 3:52Speaker 1: the early 90s?
- 3:54Speaker 2: So it was 2001 when they, I think it was
- 3:56Speaker 2: when they were having disagreements with the voice cast and
- 3:59Speaker 2: they were threatening to leave because they wanted more pay
- 4:02Speaker 2: or something like that. And eventually they settled that. And
- 4:04Speaker 2: once they settled that, they eventually, part of that negotiation
- 4:08Speaker 2: was a movie. So I think it was about 2001
- 4:11Speaker 2: when they finally settled it. So Cheese TV ended about 2003.
- 4:13Speaker 2: So you're right in that wheelhouse. Yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think as well, like we walked out
- 4:20Speaker 1: of the film and I was like, it wasn't perfect,
- 4:23Speaker 1: but I didn't hate it at all. I really enjoyed it.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I'm like, it could have been a train wreck, like
- 4:29Speaker 1: an absolute train wreck. I think because Schwarzwalder came back
- 4:34Speaker 1: and Schwarzwalder did come back for that one, didn't he?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Think so i know they got a lot of the
- 4:39Speaker 2: original cast i'll just look it up i think that's.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Why because they got a lot of the original writers back.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah and david silverman directed it and yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah they they just knew how to do the jokes
- 4:50Speaker 1: and the jokes just always landed on if it had
- 4:52Speaker 1: been like the more modern day writers and it's not
- 4:54Speaker 1: to say that see i haven't really caught up with
- 4:57Speaker 1: brand new simpsons at the moment but it's had this
- 4:59Speaker 1: renaissance where like you know i'll listen to you and
- 5:02Speaker 1: guy and i'm like maybe i really should just give
- 5:04Speaker 1: these new ones a crack because you guys especially like
- 5:07Speaker 1: you you say. They're good. They're not as terrible as
- 5:11Speaker 1: people say they are.
- 5:13Speaker 2: But if something's not good, we'll also say that as well. Yes.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Because people won't trust you if you just say, no,
- 5:17Speaker 2: you guys know what you're talking about. It's all good. No,
- 5:20Speaker 2: that's not all good. There is good in there. There's
- 5:22Speaker 2: also shit in there.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And I think as well, for me,
- 5:27Speaker 1: the good outweighed the bad with the first film. And
- 5:30Speaker 1: I still love going back and watching it. A few
- 5:33Speaker 1: months ago, clothes like Let's watch it. And I'm like, yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 1: I haven't watched it in ages. And I was like
- 5:38Speaker 1: laughing out loud. I'm like, this is so silly. Yeah,
- 5:42Speaker 1: I'm just glad it turned out the way it did. Like,
- 5:44Speaker 1: it's a warts and all thing.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I remember it was about, I don't know, three weeks ago,
- 5:49Speaker 2: maybe a month ago. My kids wanted to watch it
- 5:51Speaker 2: because it popped up on Disney Plus because you know
- 5:52Speaker 2: how the algorithm works. They're like, you want to watch this.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, I'm not sure if you really.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And I was like, okay, sure. And they watched The
- 5:59Speaker 2: Simpsons movie before they'd seen any of the show. I
- 6:02Speaker 2: had not shown them the show until about a month ago.
- 6:04Speaker 2: And they loved The Simpsons movie. Is there another one?
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'm like, no, there's not another movie, but there's 800
- 6:10Speaker 2: episodes of the TV show you might like. And they're like, what?
- 6:16Speaker 2: And because I sort of, I showed them The Simpsons
- 6:18Speaker 2: about two years ago. So, my daughter would have been
- 6:21Speaker 2: maybe just turned four and Elliot would have been about six.
- 6:23Speaker 2: And the first thing that came on was like an
- 6:24Speaker 2: itchy and scratchy cartoon. And Nicola looked at me and
- 6:26Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, you're right. Probably a little bit
- 6:29Speaker 2: too violent. But I'm like, that's only a small part
- 6:31Speaker 2: of the show though. But still, I was like, yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 2: maybe they're not quite ready for that. But now, all
- 6:35Speaker 2: my kids watch is The Simpsons. All they want to
- 6:37Speaker 2: watch is The Simpsons. And I'm loving revisiting the show
- 6:40Speaker 2: with them. But when I re-watched that Simpsons movie, you're right,
- 6:42Speaker 2: I don't think I'd watched it in maybe 15 years.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And I felt the same way when I was sitting
- 6:49Speaker 2: in that cinema for the first time. I'd forgotten about
- 6:51Speaker 2: a lot of the jokes. And I was like, this
- 6:52Speaker 2: is actually really funny. I will say though, and I've
- 6:55Speaker 2: always stood by this, I feel like when they leave
- 6:58Speaker 2: the dome- The movie, I wouldn't say it falls off
- 7:00Speaker 2: a cliff, but it really just stagnates for me.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It feels like another film.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It was. And I felt like it didn't feel like
- 7:06Speaker 2: a Simpsons movie anymore. Because for me, I wanted it
- 7:10Speaker 2: to be in Springfield. I wanted to feel like, you know,
- 7:12Speaker 2: a big grand event in Springfield. And once they escaped
- 7:15Speaker 2: that dome, it became just another Marge and Homer marriage
- 7:18Speaker 2: in crisis story, which I'd seen a million times before. Granted,
- 7:21Speaker 2: that scene where she taped over the wedding tape. That
- 7:25Speaker 2: was almost like one of the biggest tearjerker moments I've
- 7:27Speaker 2: ever seen in a movie. So, I remember everyone in
- 7:28Speaker 2: the cinema going, whoa, why am I crying at a
- 7:30Speaker 2: Simpsons movie? But besides that though, when Homer has his
- 7:33Speaker 2: epiphany moment and things like that, I was just like,
- 7:35Speaker 2: this is just dragging. It just feels like, what is
- 7:38Speaker 2: the point? This feels like first draft stuff to me.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yeah, especially when there's the whole existential thing with Boob Lady.
- 7:44Speaker 2: That's what I'm talking about when he has his epiphany, yeah.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I feel like, was it Homer's Odyssey where
- 7:52Speaker 1: he has the coyote?
- 7:54Speaker 2: No, no, that's Mysterious Voyage of Homer. Mysterious Voyage of Homer.
- 7:59Speaker 2: The third episode where he wants to commit suicide.
- 8:01Speaker 1: So, that was another question. Have you shown Elliot and
- 8:05Speaker 1: Holly season one?
- 8:07Speaker 2: I have shown them one episode. I've seen all of
- 8:10Speaker 2: season two. I've shown them The Call of the Simpsons.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I felt The Call of the Simpsons is the most
- 8:14Speaker 2: wackiest of the first season.
- 8:15Speaker 1: It is.
- 8:15Speaker 2: You can still enjoy it despite what it looks like, right?
- 8:17Speaker 1: Not when Homer ties a rock around his feet and
- 8:20Speaker 1: goes to.
- 8:21Speaker 2: To a bridge yeah dude that first season is dark
- 8:25Speaker 2: man it is it is.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Very very dark but um yeah going back to like
- 8:29Speaker 1: that the middle of the movie it definitely feels like
- 8:32Speaker 1: a whole another movie and the whole spiritual awakening all
- 8:35Speaker 1: that stuff but when Marge tapes over the wedding tape
- 8:38Speaker 1: that is up there with do it for her it
- 8:41Speaker 1: is um like you guys were talking about the other
- 8:42Speaker 1: day with the sports episodes like lisa and bart you
- 8:45Speaker 1: know lisa on ice at the end where you know
- 8:48Speaker 1: they they realize you know they're brother and sister but
- 8:50Speaker 1: they love each other like unconditionally stuff like that i
- 8:54Speaker 1: think that's up there it's that little pocket in Another
- 8:57Speaker 1: pocket where you're like, ah, this feels like such a
- 9:00Speaker 1: detour from- Because you're right. They've left Springfield. I just
- 9:04Speaker 1: wish it could have been all contained in Springfield. Because
- 9:06Speaker 1: to me, that's- Even though it's familiar and nostalgia, that's
- 9:10Speaker 1: what gives me most comfort is because they've built this
- 9:12Speaker 1: beautiful world in Springfield. And you leave that world, you're like, ooh,
- 9:16Speaker 1: it's jarring.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Because I wanted to see my favorite characters on
- 9:21Speaker 2: the big screen for the first time. And I got
- 9:23Speaker 2: them for about half an hour- And then I didn't. Occasionally,
- 9:27Speaker 2: we'd cut back to, meanwhile, in Springfield for like 20 seconds.
- 9:32Speaker 2: And then it's back to Homer out in the wilderness
- 9:33Speaker 2: or out in Alaska or wherever it was they were.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And I was just like, I know they had to
- 9:36Speaker 2: try and tell an emotional story with the movie as well.
- 9:38Speaker 2: But I feel like this new one doesn't need it.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I don't need another Marge and Homer's marriage in crisis story.
- 9:45Speaker 2: We do not need that anymore in 2026. We don't
- 9:48Speaker 2: need a real- I know you're going to have some
- 9:50Speaker 2: sort of emotional level to it, but do that by
- 9:53Speaker 2: incorporating the entire town in some way. If you can't
- 9:56Speaker 2: incorporate the town, just don't do it.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:59Speaker 2: No, exactly.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Right and that's the thing how are they going to
- 10:02Speaker 1: approach this now and because it's is it next year
- 10:05Speaker 1: or the year after it's coming.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Out it's next year on my birthday 12 so it
- 10:08Speaker 2: comes out september 3 in the states but that's september
- 10:11Speaker 2: 4 here which is my birthday.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Oh very happy birthday in that case um That's the thing.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Are they going to make fun of things that are
- 10:18Speaker 1: relevant today, things that are a problem today? Again, going
- 10:22Speaker 1: back to what you said, I don't need to see
- 10:23Speaker 1: a rehashing of Marge and Homer, Trouble in Paradise. We've
- 10:28Speaker 1: been there, done that with them. It's like the title
- 10:32Speaker 1: as well when they announced it, the new Simpsons movie.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I was kind of like, Okay, that's kind of on
- 10:39Speaker 1: brand with the humor, but I said in a video
- 10:42Speaker 1: I did about Doomsday, and I covered a little bit
- 10:46Speaker 1: about the new Simpsons movie. I'm like, it would have
- 10:48Speaker 1: been great if it was like the Simpsons movie, but
- 10:50Speaker 1: she has a new hat, or like the Simpsons movie,
- 10:53Speaker 1: the box... I don't know.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Just... I don't know.
- 10:55Speaker 1: The news, but I like how they put it as new. Like,
- 10:59Speaker 1: it's like a flashy action figure.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Well, it's like the Malibu Stacy. Yeah, the new hat. Yeah,
- 11:03Speaker 2: but I... With the name, when I first heard it
- 11:07Speaker 2: or saw it and read it, I thought, really? All
- 11:10Speaker 2: the people in that writer's room, that's what he came
- 11:12Speaker 2: up with? And then Nicola's like, what's the new one called?
- 11:16Speaker 2: And I was like, it's called The New Simpsons Movie.
- 11:17Speaker 2: She's like, wait, so it's just called The New Simpsons Movie?
- 11:21Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah. I'm like, wait a minute though. You
- 11:22Speaker 2: just asked me what's The New Simpsons Movie called? I'm like,
- 11:25Speaker 2: that's pretty much what everyone's going to call it. Is it?
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:28Speaker 2: It's The New Simpsons Movie.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 2: The problem is when they release a third Simpsons movie,
- 11:31Speaker 2: what's that going to be called? The third Simpsons movie?
- 11:33Speaker 2: The newest Simpsons movie?
- 11:34Speaker 1: The newest.
- 11:35Speaker 2: So, I don't mind the name, the new Simpsons movie.
- 11:38Speaker 2: It does feel on brand with Simpsons humor. You're right.
- 11:41Speaker 2: But I think like the- I like that you're saying, well,
- 11:42Speaker 2: with a new hat, that kind of thing. I think
- 11:45Speaker 2: Simpsons fans would get it, but you've got to have
- 11:47Speaker 2: a title that non-fans would understand as well.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Did you see the animatic that they released?
- 11:54Speaker 1: No, because it hasn't been officially released. It's all bootleg
- 11:57Speaker 1: stuff at the moment, isn't it?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty clear though.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Okay. No, I haven't. I've read a description. They're at
- 12:02Speaker 1: a ball game. Is that correct?
- 12:03Speaker 2: Yeah. So we did like a reaction on our channel.
- 12:06Speaker 2: So I'm not sure why, but it's basically at the
- 12:09Speaker 2: baseball game and whoever can catch the baseball wins some
- 12:12Speaker 2: sort of money. I don't think they actually reveal which
- 12:14Speaker 2: amount it is. It's just you win money. And it
- 12:17Speaker 2: reminds me of the Bart skateboarding through Springfield sequence where
- 12:21Speaker 2: what happens is the ball gets hit. Homer tries to
- 12:23Speaker 2: catch it. It hits like, or Mole Man tries to
- 12:26Speaker 2: catch it. Homer tries to knock it out of his
- 12:27Speaker 2: hand and then it bounces around through the stadium. He's
- 12:30Speaker 2: getting knocked around. They're chasing after him. Then it ends
- 12:32Speaker 2: up going through the bowl of armour and through Duff Gardens.
- 12:35Speaker 2: It's going all over Springfield, basically just giving you a
- 12:37Speaker 2: reason to go visit everyone in Springfield trying to chase
- 12:40Speaker 2: this ball. It ends up back at the stadium again.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I won't reveal who it ends up with, but it's
- 12:44Speaker 2: sort of just like a chasing a ball sequence. It
- 12:47Speaker 2: goes for about two and a half minutes. I enjoyed it.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I don't know. It felt very much like a, hey,
- 12:54Speaker 2: it's all your favourite friends. They're back on the big
- 12:56Speaker 2: screen again. I hope, though, that That's not their way
- 13:00Speaker 2: of saying, well, you've seen everybody. Now we're going to
- 13:02Speaker 2: get to leaving Springfield and have another Simpsons family story.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Because that's what the first movie did. They had the
- 13:08Speaker 2: barb driving around Springfield nude. You had the mob come
- 13:11Speaker 2: to the house just as an excuse to get as
- 13:13Speaker 2: many characters on the screen as you can. And then
- 13:16Speaker 2: they left and you didn't see them anymore. So I
- 13:17Speaker 2: hope we don't do that again.
- 13:19Speaker 1: No, yeah. I don't want to see like Simpsons in space.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But also, yeah, I hope they're not like blowing their
- 13:23Speaker 1: wad all at once where these are all the characters
- 13:25Speaker 1: and this is the last time you're going to see them.
- 13:27Speaker 1: We just want to acknowledge that they're there and then
- 13:29Speaker 1: that's it to kind of entice you. I think as well,
- 13:32Speaker 1: like with the first movie, one of the most tasteful
- 13:36Speaker 1: things and one of the most clever things they did
- 13:39Speaker 1: was the 20th Century Fox logo on Ralph coming out
- 13:41Speaker 1: of the zero or the O and doing that da-da-da-da.
- 13:47Speaker 2: That's hilarious.
- 13:47Speaker 1: That just set the tone. I remember everyone just roaring
- 13:51Speaker 1: in the cinema at my local Westfield. One of my
- 13:54Speaker 1: best mates, Luke, who came with us, he worked at
- 13:58Speaker 1: Greater Union there and he had to cut the film there.
- 14:01Speaker 1: They had to specially cut it when Frank- comes on
- 14:06Speaker 1: and the thing widens and it coincides with the film
- 14:10Speaker 1: and they had to specially cut it because that then
- 14:11Speaker 1: sends the cue to the curtain to open so luke
- 14:14Speaker 1: had to do all that and he's like man he
- 14:16Speaker 1: goes we got a preview screening uh because the staff
- 14:18Speaker 1: all had to do preview screenings and he's like yeah
- 14:21Speaker 1: it's pretty good it's pretty good but i think just
- 14:23Speaker 1: seeing ralph come out and do that you kind of
- 14:25Speaker 1: like oh okay it gave me that warm fuzzy like
- 14:29Speaker 1: okay we're in for a good show like Go into
- 14:31Speaker 1: it open-minded. And like I said, I was, for the
- 14:33Speaker 1: most part, the good outweighed the bad. But again, I
- 14:37Speaker 1: just want to see things happen in Springfield. And I
- 14:40Speaker 1: don't think that's asking too much.
- 14:42Speaker 2: No, not at all. Did you know going into it
- 14:44Speaker 2: then that it was going to do the stretch out moment?
- 14:46Speaker 2: Or did your friend tell you about that after the fact?
- 14:49Speaker 1: After.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because I remember being in the cinema
- 14:52Speaker 2: and it came up as 4-3 and anyone in the
- 14:54Speaker 2: cinema panicked. They're like, wait a minute. It's not widescreen?
- 14:58Speaker 2: What's going on here? Because it had the itchy and
- 14:59Speaker 2: scratchy cartoon originally. And then it stretches out and everyone
- 15:02Speaker 2: was all like, oh, thank goodness. It was almost like
- 15:05Speaker 2: a sigh of relief. But I do also remember at
- 15:07Speaker 2: the end, as the first and only time I've ever
- 15:10Speaker 2: experienced this, people... I didn't do it because I thought
- 15:13Speaker 2: it was kind of corny, but more than half the
- 15:16Speaker 2: cinema gave the film an applause, like a standing ovation. Yeah, right.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Have you ever experienced that before in a local cinema?
- 15:23Speaker 1: You know, like... It's funny because I've got a lot
- 15:26Speaker 1: of friends in the States, obviously with what I do,
- 15:28Speaker 1: and you and Guy are probably the same. You make
- 15:30Speaker 1: a lot of friends overseas over a common interest, me, horror,
- 15:34Speaker 1: you guys, Simpsons. And have you ever been to the
- 15:37Speaker 1: movies in the States? Once.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I saw Rogue One in New York.
- 15:41Speaker 1: So- Americans get very invested, vocal, loud, and they're interacting
- 15:47Speaker 1: with the film. Whereas here, we're as quiet as church mouses.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Stop eating chips.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Stop living. Just stop breathing.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I find I'm becoming old man Dano now. I'm in
- 15:58Speaker 2: the cinema and people are talking during the trailers, and
- 16:01Speaker 2: I'm just thinking in my head, you motherfuckers. better shut
- 16:04Speaker 2: up when the movie.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Starts dude especially horror movies i don't know if it's
- 16:08Speaker 1: the same down um down out your way um horror
- 16:12Speaker 1: movies as well like teenagers i'll see a bunch of
- 16:15Speaker 1: them walk in and i'm like oh no don't ruin
- 16:19Speaker 1: it and i'm and i'm like i'm older than them
- 16:22Speaker 1: i could take them all out but i'm also like
- 16:24Speaker 1: i don't like the looks of those teenagers yeah.
- 16:28Speaker 2: It's cold out here. Let's go back inside. But the
- 16:30Speaker 2: thing is, I went and saw Disclosure Day with Nicola, right?
- 16:32Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And these two girls were doing handstands, making TikTok videos
- 16:37Speaker 2: up the back. And I'm like, I was like, because
- 16:39Speaker 2: they wouldn't shut up the whole time. And one point
- 16:41Speaker 2: I turned, I was like, guys, seriously, we're trying to
- 16:43Speaker 2: watch Disclosure Day. Okay, please shut up. It's a Spielberg film.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Shut up. Yeah. And they looked like they were about,
- 16:49Speaker 2: I don't know, 15. I'm thinking, you must have walked
- 16:51Speaker 2: into the wrong cinema because there's no way at 2.30
- 16:53Speaker 2: on a Saturday afternoon that you 15-year-old girls are going,
- 16:56Speaker 2: let's go see that Spielberg film. That's just not happening, right?
- 16:58Speaker 2: But I think they did it so they're thinking that
- 17:00Speaker 2: the film would be empty and they could film TikTok
- 17:02Speaker 2: videos in a cinema. So, they're at the back and
- 17:04Speaker 2: they're talking, blah, blah, blah. And I'm saying, guys, can
- 17:06Speaker 2: you please just be quiet? I was just like, you know, please,
- 17:09Speaker 2: as polite as possible. And then they thought, well, if
- 17:12Speaker 2: we move from the middle at the back to the
- 17:14Speaker 2: back corner, well, they won't hear us then. So, they
- 17:17Speaker 2: went to the back corner and they kept talking. And
- 17:20Speaker 2: then one other guy was just like, guys, shut up.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And then I heard something again, like a boom, boom.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I turn around and one girl's doing a handstand with
- 17:28Speaker 2: her feet up against the back wall. Another girl's filming
- 17:30Speaker 2: it with her phone. And I said to Nicola, that's it.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I stood up. I've never done it before. I stood
- 17:34Speaker 2: up and I was like, if you guys aren't going
- 17:36Speaker 2: to watch this film, get the fuck out. And they
- 17:40Speaker 2: got the fuck out. How did that?
- 17:43Speaker 1: That's so good. Because usually they'll pick up a stink
- 17:46Speaker 1: as well. Because we've got the little biker gangs now,
- 17:49Speaker 1: the e-bike biker gangs now. And they're the new Comancheros.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 1: They're like little turds. Like I said, you could easily
- 17:58Speaker 1: take them out, but you're kind of just like, I'm
- 18:00Speaker 1: cold and frightened.
- 18:01Speaker 2: They're going to film me and put it on TikTok
- 18:03Speaker 2: and make fun of me. Yeah, exactly.
- 18:06Speaker 1: But like, turds, yeah. 230 at a Spielberg film, they
- 18:10Speaker 1: are not there to watch the movie. Again, they just
- 18:11Speaker 1: wanted a space where they could do TikToks, but also,
- 18:14Speaker 1: what is wrong with you?
- 18:15Speaker 2: Why are you doing this in a cinema? Yeah. Anyway,
- 18:19Speaker 2: but yeah, cinema etiquette aside- So, you're excited for the
- 18:22Speaker 2: new Simpsons movie? Of course. I'm more excited now that
- 18:26Speaker 2: my kids are into it, I think. I think my
- 18:28Speaker 2: kids enjoying The Simpsons and being able to go back
- 18:31Speaker 2: and revisit these classics with my kids has rejuvenated my
- 18:34Speaker 2: love for the show, which sounds silly because my entire
- 18:36Speaker 2: living is based around The Simpsons and doing a Simpsons podcast,
- 18:39Speaker 2: but it's just really rejuvenated my excitement for the show.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. And like we were talking before we-
- 18:46Speaker 1: we went live. You know, my son's just over a
- 18:48Speaker 1: week old, so I've still got a little bit of
- 18:50Speaker 1: time before I can introduce him to it, but I'm excited.
- 18:53Speaker 1: And like, I want to curate how to introduce him
- 18:56Speaker 1: to certain episodes, you know, leave out the ones that
- 18:59Speaker 1: we need to wait a little bit longer just in
- 19:01Speaker 1: terms of certain jokes and stuff like that. But, you know,
- 19:04Speaker 1: I want him to be a cultured Simpson connoisseur. Like,
- 19:07Speaker 1: you know, he has to experience the finer things in
- 19:09Speaker 1: life and you know, that's the thing. Do you start
- 19:11Speaker 1: with the movie? Do you start with certain episodes? Then
- 19:13Speaker 1: be like, all right, mate, they made a movie. But
- 19:15Speaker 1: by the time, you know, we get to the movie,
- 19:18Speaker 1: it will have the new Simpsons movie as well. It
- 19:20Speaker 1: was like, mate, we've got two and there's a third
- 19:22Speaker 1: one on the way, probably like, yeah. So I'm, I'm
- 19:25Speaker 1: excited for that as well. And I can only imagine
- 19:26Speaker 1: how exciting it would have been, you know, for you
- 19:28Speaker 1: introducing Elliot and Holly to it.
- 19:31Speaker 2: See, I introduced them to the show and I was
- 19:33Speaker 2: sort of cherry picking episodes that I knew would be
- 19:35Speaker 2: good ones to watch with them. And then one day
- 19:37Speaker 2: I was like, oh, let's watch this one. They're like, no,
- 19:39Speaker 2: we've watched it. I was like, I was like, oh,
- 19:40Speaker 2: that's right. These kids live in the era of binge watching. So,
- 19:43Speaker 2: they get up in the morning and Elliot just whacks
- 19:45Speaker 2: the TV on. And I'm like, wait a minute, you've
- 19:47Speaker 2: watched all of season three, four, five, six, seven, eight already? What?
- 19:50Speaker 2: They've binged the entire lot. I'm like, I mean, it's good.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I want to watch it with you. But the one
- 19:58Speaker 2: thing is, I said to them, You are not allowed
- 20:01Speaker 2: to watch Who Shot Mr. Burns. I am watching that
- 20:03Speaker 2: with you. And what I'm going to do with them
- 20:05Speaker 2: is we're going to do a reaction video. So, we're
- 20:07Speaker 2: going to sit there. We're going to watch it, right?
- 20:09Speaker 2: Part one. And we're going to stop. And we're going
- 20:11Speaker 2: to work. They're going to guess who they think it is.
- 20:13Speaker 2: They're going to go through the clues. We're going to
- 20:14Speaker 2: make a real thing of it. And then watch part
- 20:16Speaker 2: two and watch their faces be confused and disappointed to
- 20:18Speaker 2: find out that it was Maggie.
- 20:20Speaker 1: And then they found out it was the baby.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Because I remember at the time being like, the fuck
- 20:24Speaker 2: is this shit? Yeah.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't guess it either. I was convinced, obviously,
- 20:30Speaker 1: because we were young. And it was just the good
- 20:33Speaker 1: writing as well. We're like, oh, it was Smithers. Smithers
- 20:35Speaker 1: did it 100%. Yeah, or Homer, yeah.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Yeah, or Homer, yeah. The picture on the thumbnail is
- 20:40Speaker 2: Homer with a gun to Burns' head. So Elliot's always like,
- 20:43Speaker 2: I know who did it anyway. I've already seen it.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I've seen the picture. It's Homer. I don't care. I'm like, boy,
- 20:48Speaker 2: are you in for some disappointment, kid?
- 20:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you remember as well the episode
- 20:52Speaker 1: where Marge and Homer do the nudie run through Springfield
- 20:56Speaker 1: from the putt-putt golf and the ads leading up to that?
- 21:01Speaker 2: It was the biggest thing ever.
- 21:02Speaker 1: So much so, mum and dad were like, you're not
- 21:04Speaker 1: watching that one. I'm like, oh, come on.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I remember. It was 9.30 on a Monday night. It
- 21:09Speaker 2: was edited. Adults only time. Adults only Simpsons. And I
- 21:13Speaker 2: would have been, I think, coming out like 97, 98. So,
- 21:15Speaker 2: it would have been like 10. A little horny little, well,
- 21:18Speaker 2: not horny. I guess I was 10. But, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 2: a little downer thing and I see boobies here or something,
- 21:21Speaker 2: you know? And then you put it on and it's like, ah,
- 21:24Speaker 2: so that's all it is. That was all a big
- 21:26Speaker 2: publicity stunt. Damn it.
- 21:27Speaker 1: My parents were more like walking conundrums. Like they'd remember
- 21:31Speaker 1: the show sex life.
- 21:33Speaker 2: No, I don't.
- 21:34Speaker 1: It was like an, it was, they just let me
- 21:36Speaker 1: watch that. And like, but then also I was banned
- 21:39Speaker 1: from watching Batman returns and hook. Why Hook? I don't know.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I think it was just all the parents at the
- 21:46Speaker 1: time were like, no, Hook's pretty full on. So, mum
- 21:48Speaker 1: and dad were like, okay, well, we can't. But I
- 21:50Speaker 1: was allowed to watch The Simpsons and South Park.
- 21:53Speaker 2: See, I wasn't allowed to watch The Simpsons. I was
- 21:54Speaker 2: not allowed to watch The Simpsons until I was seven
- 21:56Speaker 2: or until I was six, I think. Yeah, six or seven. Well,
- 21:59Speaker 2: the first new episode that aired when I was allowed
- 22:01Speaker 2: to start watching it was Treehouse of Horror 6. So,
- 22:05Speaker 2: whenever that aired in Australia for the first time, that's
- 22:07Speaker 2: when I was allowed to start watching The Simpsons. I've
- 22:09Speaker 2: still got my VHS of when I was- used to
- 22:13Speaker 2: record the shows off TV. And I've still got the
- 22:15Speaker 2: first one I ever recorded. And it was the new
- 22:17Speaker 2: kid on the block where Laura Powers moves in next
- 22:19Speaker 2: door was like the old one. And then up next,
- 22:21Speaker 2: all new Simpsons. And it was the Treehouse of Horror 6.
- 22:24Speaker 2: That's my first ever real-time Simpsons experience. Which is why
- 22:28Speaker 2: I think I have such a nostalgia for that Treehouse
- 22:29Speaker 2: of Horror episode. But yeah, I wasn't allowed to watch Simpsons.
- 22:31Speaker 2: South Park, I used to sneak into my bedroom and,
- 22:34Speaker 2: you know, put SBS on at like 9.30 on a
- 22:36Speaker 2: Monday night and watch it quietly. I think like mum
- 22:39Speaker 2: knew I watched it. She wasn't happy about it. And
- 22:40Speaker 2: then when she found out there was an episode called, no, no,
- 22:43Speaker 2: We were going to the beach one night, Monday night.
- 22:45Speaker 2: That was when season two had just started. And it
- 22:48Speaker 2: was the cliffhanger for Cartman's mum's a dirty slut. And
- 22:51Speaker 2: you're going to find out who Cartman's. And I remember
- 22:55Speaker 2: being so annoyed because we were running behind. I'm like,
- 22:57Speaker 2: we've got to be back. Because it was Daylight Savings.
- 22:58Speaker 2: It was a bit lame. We're going to be back
- 22:59Speaker 2: in time for the South Park episode. And dad's like,
- 23:01Speaker 2: what is it? And I was like, it's the follow-up
- 23:04Speaker 2: to Cartman's mum's a dirty slut. And mum's like- Well,
- 23:07Speaker 2: guess what? You're not watching, Brendan, when you get home.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I'm like, no, no, I shouldn't have said it. And
- 23:12Speaker 2: then we got back and it wasn't even the part two,
- 23:14Speaker 2: they screwed with us. It was the Terrence and Philip,
- 23:16Speaker 2: not without my anus.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Oh, I love that. I love that episode. It's so funny.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Completely just screwed with us. Yeah.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Yeah. It's funny. My dad loves Itchy and Scratchy and
- 23:27Speaker 1: Terrence and Philip. And we'd quote the Terrence and Philip one.
- 23:30Speaker 1: It's just like, we're looking for treasure. Is that some
- 23:32Speaker 1: sort of a metaphor or a sense that can't be described? No,
- 23:34Speaker 1: we're searching for treasure.
- 23:36Speaker 2: See, I wouldn't quote it. I just did a vase. Yeah.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Relax, guy.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Relax, guy. But yeah, so when the Simpsons movie
- 23:45Speaker 2: came out for you, were your friends excited for it?
- 23:48Speaker 2: Who did you go see it with?
- 23:50Speaker 1: So I'm still best friends with my mates from the
- 23:53Speaker 1: first week of high school, 2001. So they've been my groomsmen.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:57Speaker 1: And I was mentioning Luke before. Luke now works in
- 24:01Speaker 1: VFX here in Sydney and he got to work on
- 24:03Speaker 1: the Odyssey, Masters of the Universe. So again, It's so
- 24:05Speaker 1: cool because when Batman Begins came out, it was what, 2005,
- 24:09Speaker 1: we were in year 11 and Luke and I were
- 24:11Speaker 1: like Nolan nerds and now he's worked on one. Now
- 24:13Speaker 1: he's got a son as well. So it's this cool evolution.
- 24:17Speaker 1: But the four of us, it was me, Pete, Luke, Brad,
- 24:20Speaker 1: and our friend Arif as well. We were raised on
- 24:24Speaker 1: Simpsons quotes. You asked my wife, we met on Tinder.
- 24:28Speaker 1: And in my Tinder profile bio, it was, I got
- 24:31Speaker 1: most of my education from The Simpsons. And it's true. Like,
- 24:34Speaker 1: most of my education was from The Simpsons.
- 24:37Speaker 2: So, it was.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Massive for us. It was huge. And I remember we
- 24:40Speaker 1: all took the day off during the week. And it was,
- 24:43Speaker 1: I think it was, well, you know, the lame quote,
- 24:46Speaker 1: you know, it's all about the journey, not the destination.
- 24:48Speaker 1: I remember the journey going to Westfield, getting the popcorn,
- 24:51Speaker 1: the drinks. And then you watch the movie and go
- 24:54Speaker 1: through that journey. And it was awesome. And I think
- 24:57Speaker 1: that probably helped with digesting the film as well and
- 25:01Speaker 1: having more of a positive outlook on it.
- 25:05Speaker 2: I'm excited for the tie-in merch and stuff that comes with,
- 25:09Speaker 2: in the real sort of lead up to when the
- 25:10Speaker 2: film actually comes out next year. Because last time, remember
- 25:12Speaker 2: they had like the 7-Elevens became Quickie Marts.
- 25:15Speaker 1: That's right. Yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 2: They tried to have Burger King in Australia for a
- 25:19Speaker 2: little while. So, we had Burger Kings here and they
- 25:21Speaker 2: had all the Simpsons movie toys. And I'm wondering what
- 25:24Speaker 2: they're going to do next. I feel like in the last, say,
- 25:25Speaker 2: maybe two or three years, they've really upped the game
- 25:27Speaker 2: when it comes to Simpsons merchandise. For a long while,
- 25:30Speaker 2: it was almost like Fox just didn't know what to
- 25:32Speaker 2: do with it. It was just the standard, you know,
- 25:33Speaker 2: don't have a cow, man, t-shirts, that kind of thing.
- 25:35Speaker 2: But now there's, you know, the toys that we're getting
- 25:38Speaker 2: are just like so obscure. And you're like, this is great.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Yeah, like, I think you posted a couple of them. There's, like,
- 25:43Speaker 1: the evil Krusty doll.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got the King Homer down here, the Flyboy Bart, that,
- 25:47Speaker 2: you know, the DNA machine. There's now going to be
- 25:50Speaker 2: a Stretch Dude- Stretch Armstrong coming out. Yeah.
- 25:53Speaker 1: See, stuff like that, man. It was very generic and
- 25:55Speaker 1: by the books, but yeah, I feel like, like I said,
- 25:57Speaker 1: that evil Krusty doll, like that whole line as well.
- 26:00Speaker 1: I'm like, that's cool. Like if we had had them
- 26:02Speaker 1: back in the day and we were kids, like it
- 26:04Speaker 1: would have been like, and you and I spoke about
- 26:06Speaker 1: this last time, the red rooster, their happy meal.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I put it up there.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Yeah. That's right. You've got like mint condition, like the
- 26:13Speaker 1: box and all that. That was huge.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Like that.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I remember having them and I'm like this, I've got
- 26:17Speaker 1: them all on the couch. This is the coolest thing ever.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Everyone had one, if it was in a box or somewhere,
- 26:23Speaker 2: everyone's house had at least a couple of those figurines
- 26:25Speaker 2: somewhere laying around. Plus, remember the old Nutella glasses? Yeah.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Every kitchen in Australia had a couple of them. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I remember that. Yeah, that's right. The long Nutella jar,
- 26:36Speaker 1: and you'd wash it out, and you're like, this is it.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I've got this for the rest of my life.
- 26:39Speaker 2: What a time to be alive. You can't do that.
- 26:41Speaker 2: They don't do that shit anymore.
- 26:42Speaker 1: No, it's like the Batman Forever glasses. Like, you know, honey,
- 26:45Speaker 1: break out the vagina.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Yeah, they're so good, man.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:48Speaker 2: You go to Macca's now and the kids get like
- 26:49Speaker 2: a little booklet in Happy Meal now. I'm like, bring
- 26:52Speaker 2: back the Steins. Yeah.
- 26:53Speaker 1: What is this crap?
- 26:54Speaker 2: Speaking of things that I don't want in the new
- 26:56Speaker 2: film though, also you can't touch on it earlier, like
- 26:59Speaker 2: dated references, but I don't want celeb cameos. I feel
- 27:02Speaker 2: like the first one had like the green- the Green
- 27:04Speaker 2: Day theme is cool, right? And Green Day is still
- 27:07Speaker 2: kind of relevant in 2026 to.
- 27:09Speaker 1: A particular- And then Tom Hanks.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Tom Hanks, you know, like I feel like having celeb
- 27:15Speaker 2: cameos really dates it and it- See, as soon as
- 27:18Speaker 2: this movie, the first one came out, we're now really
- 27:20Speaker 2: in that, look who we've got on the show this
- 27:23Speaker 2: week era, where it wasn't celebs voicing characters. It was
- 27:27Speaker 2: celebrities just coming onto the show. Hey, it's Britney Spears. Hey,
- 27:30Speaker 2: it's Jon Stewart. Hey, it's Lady Gaga. And it was
- 27:32Speaker 2: almost like they were just putting real life people into
- 27:34Speaker 2: the show every single week. I don't want them to
- 27:37Speaker 2: do that in this one. I want to see if
- 27:38Speaker 2: they can just generate a really compelling movie-esque story in
- 27:43Speaker 2: Springfield with just the characters of Springfield.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. And that's it. they've curated all these wonderful characters,
- 27:52Speaker 1: like each end of the spectrum. And I love that
- 27:55Speaker 1: it creates such good discourse because it's so subjective of
- 27:57Speaker 1: like who your favorite character is. And there's just like,
- 28:01Speaker 1: there's something for everyone in terms of a character that
- 28:04Speaker 1: you did not necessarily relate to, but like you find
- 28:07Speaker 1: comfort in that makes you laugh. And yeah, I think
- 28:11Speaker 1: letting them go by the wayside, like they kind of
- 28:13Speaker 1: did in the first film where they're just like a
- 28:15Speaker 1: quick cameo here and then you're like, Dr. Nick gets killed.
- 28:18Speaker 1: And then, you know, Barney and Lenny, Carl, they're there,
- 28:24Speaker 1: but they're not there. And then, I don't know, they
- 28:27Speaker 1: kind of just come and go. Whereas I feel like
- 28:29Speaker 1: if the story can be so on point, like flawless, tight,
- 28:33Speaker 1: where you've got the main bunch of, obviously the Simpsons,
- 28:37Speaker 1: but also the side characters that have had so much
- 28:40Speaker 1: screen time in the past, sometimes where they've had episodes
- 28:43Speaker 1: dedicated to them, to not let them just feel like,
- 28:46Speaker 1: a cheap cameo or just one line and they're gone
- 28:49Speaker 1: just so they can be like, see, they're there. Like, no,
- 28:52Speaker 1: give these characters a purpose because they've had such big
- 28:55Speaker 1: purposes in the past.
- 28:57Speaker 2: What was your thoughts on them bringing Russ Cargill into
- 29:00Speaker 2: the movie as the big bad?
- 29:01Speaker 1: It was a distraction for me at first because I'm like, well,
- 29:05Speaker 1: that's Hank Scorpio. Like, what's going on here? Because as
- 29:08Speaker 1: soon as you heard his voice and I'm like, that's
- 29:12Speaker 1: Hank Scorpio. What's going on here? I didn't have a
- 29:14Speaker 1: problem with it. I think he did a great job.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I also love the bouncing back and forth with President
- 29:18Speaker 1: Schwarzenegger and stuff like that. That was all great. Him
- 29:22Speaker 1: with Cletus as well. I didn't have a problem with it,
- 29:26Speaker 1: but also at first it was a distraction because it
- 29:28Speaker 1: was the same guy that voiced Scorpio.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Do you think the movie The New One needs a villain?
- 29:33Speaker 2: Does the story need a villain?
- 29:35Speaker 1: I don't think it needs a villain, I don't necessarily
- 29:38Speaker 1: think it needs a villain villain. Like if anything, the
- 29:40Speaker 1: villain can be conflict going on with some of the characters,
- 29:43Speaker 1: but it doesn't necessarily need to be between Homer and Marge.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Cause again, been there, done that. But I don't think
- 29:49Speaker 1: you need, like, I think because it was their first
- 29:51Speaker 1: cinematic run, they had to have something that was cinematic
- 29:55Speaker 1: and epic and, you know, put the dome over Springfield.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Russ Cargill, all that, Ipa. But then you leave Springfield
- 30:03Speaker 1: and all that existential stuff happens and they got too cinematic,
- 30:08Speaker 1: if that makes sense. Whereas I feel you can pull
- 30:11Speaker 1: in the reins but still have a really, really well
- 30:14Speaker 1: done character-driven story. Have writers been confirmed yet for this one?
- 30:20Speaker 2: Let's have a look.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Because if they got Schwartz, can you imagine if they
- 30:23Speaker 1: got Conan back as well?
- 30:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I doubt he'd do it. Yeah, yeah. No, there's
- 30:28Speaker 2: no confirmed writers yet on the wiki page anyway. Okay.
- 30:32Speaker 2: I'm assuming it's going to be a lot of the
- 30:35Speaker 2: original ones. Because a lot of the guys who did
- 30:38Speaker 2: the original Simpsons movie still work on the show as
- 30:42Speaker 2: executive producers or consultants in some way. Yeah. Yeah. But
- 30:46Speaker 2: Al Jean's just going to be relaunching The Critic with
- 30:50Speaker 2: Mike Reese soon.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Like John Lovett's The Critic? Yeah.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Really? Yeah. He confirmed it on our podcast. Yeah. Okay.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Is Lovitz going to come back?
- 31:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Lovitz is doing it. Wow.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Okay. Actually, I never really got into that. Did you?
- 31:05Speaker 2: Not at the time. And I've rewatched it now and
- 31:07Speaker 2: I've gone, wow, this show was like made for me.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Like the humor was made for me. Do you know
- 31:13Speaker 2: the concept of it?
- 31:14Speaker 1: Well, not really. Cause my introduction was the film festival episode.
- 31:18Speaker 2: And man, is there a history behind that episode? Have
- 31:20Speaker 2: you ever heard the history behind that? That's for another day. Yeah. Right.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 31:23Speaker 2: No, no, no. Mac Graney's name is not even on
- 31:25Speaker 2: the credits for that episode.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Like he just- doesn't want to be associated with it.
- 31:30Speaker 2: No, he thought, because James L. Brooks helped produce the critic,
- 31:32Speaker 2: the original one, and he felt he was, James L.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Brooks was just, and Gene and Reese were just using
- 31:37Speaker 2: the Simpsons to promote their own show.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Ah.
- 31:40Speaker 2: And there was big turmoil. Oh, right.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, no, I didn't, I thought it was just like,
- 31:46Speaker 1: you know, like a Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover.
- 31:50Speaker 2: See, I, well, I didn't think it was a crossover.
- 31:51Speaker 2: At the time, I had no idea who Jay Sherman was.
- 31:54Speaker 2: I just assumed he was a film critic in the
- 31:56Speaker 2: world of Springfield. You know, I didn't, I didn't realize
- 31:58Speaker 2: he was a character from another show or anything like that.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I think the episode works in itself like that. But
- 32:03Speaker 2: what was I talking about? Oh, the critic. Yeah, so
- 32:05Speaker 2: the way it works is like he is a film critic,
- 32:07Speaker 2: but it features almost like family guy-esque parodies of movies.
- 32:12Speaker 2: So like, for example, you know, have the alien where
- 32:14Speaker 2: it's getting closer to Ripley and things coming out, but
- 32:17Speaker 2: it kisses her on the cheek. Just things like that.
- 32:20Speaker 2: So it's like him. It's like taking the piss out
- 32:22Speaker 2: of um, out of classic movies. It's almost like done
- 32:25Speaker 2: in like a 2026 reels era where it's all like snippets,
- 32:28Speaker 2: you know? Yeah.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Okay. It's like, like family guy cutaway gags.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Just like, well, it's him saying, and here's
- 32:34Speaker 2: the latest clip from the latest movie aliens. And it's
- 32:37Speaker 2: a parody clip though. It's not an actual clip. It's
- 32:39Speaker 2: them taking the piss out of aliens.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Ah, okay. Yeah. I've, I'd see it in passing when
- 32:44Speaker 1: it was on, um, Foxtel back in the day, but
- 32:46Speaker 1: I'd never really like committed to watching it. It was just,
- 32:49Speaker 1: it was just a film festival episode. And I'm like, Assumed,
- 32:52Speaker 1: like you, that he was from Springfield. And because it
- 32:54Speaker 1: was Lovitz as well, and he's voiced so many characters,
- 32:57Speaker 1: like the art teacher as well.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Another triumph, yeah.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Even a rhombus can create an adorable little bunny rabbit.
- 33:07Speaker 2: He did the director of the play that Marge was
- 33:10Speaker 2: in with Ned Flanders.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Yes, that's right.
- 33:14Speaker 2: But the big one is Artie Ziff. That's the big
- 33:16Speaker 2: one he does.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Oh, that's right.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Artie Ziff, of course. Tell anybody about my busy hands.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Except myself.
- 33:26Speaker 1: But, yeah, look, I'm keen. Like, it's just anything Simpsons,
- 33:30Speaker 1: I'm always going to be excited for. But I'm sounding
- 33:32Speaker 1: like a bit of a hypocrite because I haven't played
- 33:34Speaker 1: Catch-Up with the latest episodes.
- 33:36Speaker 2: I don't think you have to play Catch-Up. I think
- 33:38Speaker 2: you can still be a Simpsons fan and not watch
- 33:39Speaker 2: the show anymore now. Yeah.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Like, I just go back and watch the Golden Oldies. Like,
- 33:44Speaker 1: to me, that's... But it's like what I do with
- 33:45Speaker 1: Home Improvement and Frasier. Like, it's comfort food for me. Yeah.
- 33:49Speaker 2: And there's also the... A lot of people have said
- 33:51Speaker 2: that we go back and re-watch these shows because we
- 33:54Speaker 2: know how they end. Yes. And we don't want to
- 33:57Speaker 2: be surprised anymore. We don't want to be shocked anymore.
- 34:00Speaker 2: It's like, I know how this one ends. I know
- 34:02Speaker 2: I'm going to be happy at the end of it.
- 34:03Speaker 2: I would rather just watch this, please.
- 34:05Speaker 1: There's enough uncertainty in the world, whereas we know exactly
- 34:08Speaker 1: how these go down. And it's like an ADHD thing.
- 34:11Speaker 1: You're just like, I know exactly how it's going to
- 34:13Speaker 1: go down. I can fall asleep to it. I'm not
- 34:15Speaker 1: going to miss a thing.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Yes. Well, I think that I'm just about to do it.
- 34:18Speaker 2: I know you're going to get back to daddy duties.
- 34:20Speaker 2: You're a new dad. I can't believe it. I am.
- 34:22Speaker 2: I am.
- 34:22Speaker 1: And like we were talking before, like eventually I'm going
- 34:24Speaker 1: to be introducing my boy to all this stuff. So,
- 34:27Speaker 1: it's exciting.
- 34:28Speaker 2: What's the episode you feel like you're really excited to
- 34:30Speaker 2: show your kids? What's the one for you that you
- 34:33Speaker 2: have the most nostalgia for?
- 34:35Speaker 1: Man, probably the Stonecutters.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 34:37Speaker 1: Stonecutters. Probably Lisa on Ice as well.
- 34:41Speaker 2: My kids gravitate towards that one. They like it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I think as well- That's hard. It's just like, you know,
- 34:49Speaker 1: naming your favorite movie. It's hard. But there are a few.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Do It For Her.
- 34:54Speaker 2: My kids love the, they call it the one where
- 34:56Speaker 2: Homer gets fat.
- 34:58Speaker 1: The one where Homer gets fat. Also, I love the
- 35:03Speaker 1: camping one where they go on the raft.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Yeah. That's a big little doodle. Yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 1: A fine vessel she be. I'll take it.
- 35:13Speaker 2: They rewatched, my kids watched the New Kid on the
- 35:16Speaker 2: Block yesterday, Laura Powers, written by Conan O'Brien. Yeah, right.
- 35:20Speaker 2: And I completely forgot that Captain McAllister wasn't a real captain.
- 35:25Speaker 2: He wasn't, that was his first ever appearance. That's right.
- 35:29Speaker 2: He wasn't intended to be a genuine sea captain. And
- 35:31Speaker 2: then he just evolved into a sea captain who's just,
- 35:34Speaker 2: you know, oh, many stories from back in the day
- 35:37Speaker 2: out on the seas. And it's like, no, no, he
- 35:38Speaker 2: was just a guy that opened up a fucking all-you-can-eat
- 35:40Speaker 2: seafood buffet. That's what he was. He pretended to be
- 35:43Speaker 2: a sea captain as a gimmick. But no, they just
- 35:45Speaker 2: turned him into a sea captain.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Tis no man. Tis a remorseless eating machine.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Still my favorite Homer B plot of all time. That
- 35:52Speaker 2: could be me.
- 35:53Speaker 1: And I love, that's the same episode as well where
- 35:56Speaker 1: Lionel Hutz is like, but you are the greatest hero
- 36:00Speaker 1: in American history. Yes. Is that also when Skinner comes
- 36:06Speaker 1: in and he's like, Orange Julius, and he's like, I've
- 36:08Speaker 1: got one, it's half drunk. And he's like, why don't
- 36:09Speaker 1: I just drink out of a toilet? And he's like,
- 36:11Speaker 1: he'll be back.
- 36:12Speaker 2: He'll be back. I think it might be the one,
- 36:14Speaker 2: I think the one where they're suing him for, Mr.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Burns for sexual harassment. Oh, yeah. It might be that one.
- 36:20Speaker 2: But I remember, like, I was in here doing some
- 36:22Speaker 2: work and Alec was out there watching New Kid on
- 36:24Speaker 2: the Block. And Alec runs in and he goes, Dad,
- 36:26Speaker 2: you won't believe it. So, Homer got kicked out of
- 36:28Speaker 2: a place that has all you can eat, but he
- 36:30Speaker 2: wasn't allowed to eat all you can eat. And it
- 36:32Speaker 2: was like all fish and stuff. And when he couldn't
- 36:35Speaker 2: eat any more fish, he went fishing.
- 36:39Speaker 1: See, that's cool. See, that's what I'm looking forward to,
- 36:42Speaker 1: like certain plot points that mean so much to you
- 36:45Speaker 1: and I, seeing your kids' reaction. Like that's going to
- 36:48Speaker 1: be like, and you kind of, you're probably the same
- 36:51Speaker 1: with Elliot and Holly. You're kind of like, like, waiting, like,
- 36:54Speaker 1: how are they going to react to certain things? And, yeah,
- 36:57Speaker 1: I'm excited.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I'm so glad I was able to capture on video
- 37:01Speaker 2: Elliot watching the end of Empire Strikes Back for the
- 37:03Speaker 2: first time, not knowing what happened.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Because I realized that The Simpsons spoiled that. I'm so
- 37:10Speaker 2: glad I showed him that because he watched the first
- 37:13Speaker 2: Star Wars about, you know, six months ago, and we
- 37:15Speaker 2: only watched Empire about a month ago. But had he
- 37:17Speaker 2: watched The Simpsons before Empire, it would have been spoiled
- 37:20Speaker 2: because Homer spoils it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, but things
- 37:23Speaker 2: like that, like, you know, the Darth Vader moment and
- 37:26Speaker 2: just real sort of twists and turns. It's great being
- 37:28Speaker 2: able to sort of experience it with someone who has never...
- 37:31Speaker 2: Because everyone knows the Vader angle. But your kids don't.
- 37:35Speaker 1: No.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Why would they? No, exactly. You've got a lot to
- 37:37Speaker 2: look forward to being a dad.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Seeing that... Pardon me. Seeing that penny drop
- 37:41Speaker 1: with Vader and Luke, that's one for the books.
- 37:45Speaker 2: It is indeed. But thank you again, man. Plug all
- 37:47Speaker 2: your socials in your new YouTube channel and whatnot before
- 37:49Speaker 2: you go.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Yeah, awesome, man. So, like, last time.
- 37:52Speaker 1: I was on here. I was doing the Cosplay Chris thing.
- 37:55Speaker 1: But now you've got the Chris Stanley YouTube channel, which
- 37:57Speaker 1: is like my main jam. So like movie reviews, entertainment news,
- 38:00Speaker 1: do a lot of like coverage on screen news props.
- 38:03Speaker 1: So yesterday was Texas Chainsaw Massacre Day. So I did
- 38:05Speaker 1: a video covering some of the screen news props and like,
- 38:08Speaker 1: where are they now?
- 38:09Speaker 2: It has its own day? Yeah.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Texas Chainsaw Massacre Day was yesterday. Everything has a day.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it does, doesn't it? Yeah, it's Avocado Day. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Like, my wife will be like, oh, it's International Chocolate
- 38:22Speaker 1: Mud Cake Day. I'm like, isn't that every day? Yeah,
- 38:28Speaker 1: and then on the Instagrams, it's just Chris Stanley Official.
- 38:32Speaker 1: And yeah, I have an Etsy store, Props by Chris,
- 38:34Speaker 1: where I do a lot of horror props. Like, Stuff
- 38:37Speaker 1: back here is from fellow artist friends. I love collecting
- 38:41Speaker 1: their work, but I do a lot of Freddy stuff.
- 38:44Speaker 1: And that's another thing. I've got to introduce my boy
- 38:46Speaker 1: to the horror stuff as well, slowly.
- 38:48Speaker 2: What's Baby's first horror? Like the Goosebumps TV series?
- 38:51Speaker 1: Oh, God, yeah. And Are You Afraid of the Dark?
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I think.
- 38:55Speaker 2: My kids love Goosebumps. So, yeah, that's a good one.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Good one to start with.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 38:59Speaker 2: It's been a pleasure, man. Talk to you soon.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Dando, thank you so much, mate.
