- 0:58second District Tournament champions Morgan County Basketball completes four game
- 1:03Suite Cougar's beat Elliott County, Lady Cougar's outlast East Carter
- 1:09in title games. Neither the Morgan County boys or girls
- 1:14basketball teams entered the sixty second District tournament as the
- 1:18one seed, but when the final horn sounded, both emerged
- 1:22as champions. Last week in Grayson, the third seeded Cougars
- 1:27led by as many as fifteen before holding off a
- 1:31late East Carter rally for seventy four to seventy win
- 1:35in the sixty second district tournament opener thanks to four
- 1:39players in double figures Eli Bradley nineteen, Aden Barker sixteen,
- 1:45Parker Trustees sixteen, Asher Gamble fifteen coach Reese Griffiths. Team
- 1:51followed with an impressive second half performance in beating top
- 1:54seeded Elliott County fifty nine to fifty one. Once again
- 2:00player scored in the double figures, led by Asher Gambles
- 2:03twenty points, along with a strong ten point eight rebound
- 2:07performance from Grayson Goose Hampton. The Cougars came into the
- 2:13tourney having dropped four of the five regular season matchups
- 2:17between the two schools zero to three versus Elliott, one
- 2:21to two versus East Carter, but one when it mattered
- 2:26most on the girls side, Morgan County b East Carter
- 2:30in the game one on the strength of the combined
- 2:33forty one points and twenty one rebounds from Emma Clinger
- 2:36and Lilly Littell. Then in the championship, Coach Derreck Young's
- 2:41squad completed the county sweep as the dynamic duo again
- 2:46led the way with the combined thirty five points and
- 2:49eighteen boards. Bella Smith added two huge threes in the
- 2:54quarter fourth quarter, while Sarah Jenkins converted a critical basket
- 2:59and won one in the final thirty seconds of the
- 3:02Lady Cougars earned the district title. For the Cougars. It
- 3:08marked the fourth consecutive pardon Me district title is Griffith
- 3:17Stay's perfect eight to zero in district tournament games in
- 3:20his tenure at Morgan County High School. As for the
- 3:23Lady Cougars, the win avenged last season sixty five to
- 3:27thirty eight blowout loss to the East in the finals.
- 3:31It's the third district for the girls since twenty twenty
- 3:35and the second championship for Young. Full game stories can
- 3:39be found on page five. Our next racle is make
- 3:44it a four peak. Cougars beat East Carter in Elliott
- 3:47County to claim district crown by David Packet for the
- 3:52first time in the program history. The Morgan County boys
- 3:55basketball team has won four yes count of four concutive
- 4:00district titles. Last week, Morgan Road Is starting five for
- 4:04a full thirty two minutes to record a well earned
- 4:07fifty nine fifty one win over arch rival Elliott County
- 4:12in Grayson. All this coming after a talented and deep
- 4:16Lions team has defeated the Cougars in each of their
- 4:19three regular season meetings sixty seven to forty eight, seventy
- 4:24to sixty five, sixty seven to sixty four. After Elliott
- 4:28beat us the third time, we all wanted another crack
- 4:32at them, head coach Reece Griffith said, They're a great
- 4:35team and they whipped us in the regular season, but
- 4:38I'm a competitor and I didn't want it to end
- 4:41like that. So to get another shot in the postseason
- 4:45was big. Basketball fans know that beating the team four
- 4:50straight times, especially a team with the talent and experience
- 4:54of Morgan County, is very difficult to do. In defending
- 4:58three time district champs, knew this and refused to surrender
- 5:02their title. I came to Morgan County with the expectation
- 5:06to win championships, head coach Rhees Griffith said, and this
- 5:11is not about me as a coach. It's about the
- 5:14hard work and dedication of four great teams. I've always
- 5:18believed that it takes great players to make a great coach.
- 5:21It takes kids that are willing to buy into what
- 5:24you're trying to get done. And these kids bought in
- 5:28every single day. I'm super proud of them. To get
- 5:33Elliott Griffith's team had to go through had to first
- 5:37go through East. Carter, the district's second seed with fifteen
- 5:40wins to its credit, including four in district play. East
- 5:45had joined its share of success, joining undefeated for a
- 5:48month of for a month January fifth through February fifth,
- 5:53including a sixty five fifty six overtime win over Morgan
- 5:57County in West Liberty. The Cougars avenged with that loss
- 6:03with a sixty eight to forty eight route in Grayson
- 6:06on February tenth. It snapped east eight game win streak.
- 6:11It also put the Raiders in a late season skid,
- 6:14losing five of their last six games, and Morgan wasn't
- 6:18about to let East off that map. In this postseason matchup.
- 6:23The Cougars trailed East for nearly the entire opening quarter
- 6:27and faced a twenty one to sixteen deficit after one
- 6:31baskets by Asher, Gamble, Parker Trustee Aden Barker kept the
- 6:35Visitors close before Grayson Goose Hampton tied it at twenty
- 6:40five with a fade away jumper in the lane. At
- 6:44three minutes and thirty five seconds mark for the second period,
- 6:48Emli Bradley gave Morgan to leave twenty seven to twenty
- 6:52five with a bucket and the paint. Both teams traded baskets,
- 6:57but the Cougar's got the upper hand on the back
- 7:00to back threes from Trusty and Bradley, followed by Bradley
- 7:04and Hampton scoring layouts over the final one minute and
- 7:08ten seconds for a thirty seven to thirty three lead
- 7:12at intermission. Morgan refused to relinquish the lead in the
- 7:17third quarter and even expanded it. Trusty opened with a
- 7:21three pointer from the left wing before Barker scored on
- 7:25a drive and then went coast to coast for layup.
- 7:29Gamble riled all four straight, including a deep three from
- 7:32the top to make it forty nine to forty three. Gamble,
- 7:37trust Trusty, Now let me start over Gamble, Trusty and
- 7:42Bradley all tallied baskets over two minutes and forty seconds
- 7:47before Bradley capped the quarter in a spectacular fashion with
- 7:51a thirty nine foot bomb to beat the buzzer from
- 7:54just inside of half court. The shot sent Cougar Nation
- 7:59into a frenzy as Morgan took the commanding sixty eight
- 8:03to forty eight sixty to forty eight advantage heading to
- 8:07the fourth. From there, Barker delivered seven points over the
- 8:11final eight minutes as the Cougars withstood a twenty two
- 8:15to fourteen run by East. In the end, it's all
- 8:19about surviving and advancing, and the Cougars did that with
- 8:24their four point win in the title game against Elliott.
- 8:28Morgan was seeking its first win of the season against
- 8:32its big arrival and with that, the fourth consecutive district
- 8:36champion for Hedgeco's Griffiths. The Lions scored seven of the
- 8:41game's first nine points and led all but thirty seconds
- 8:45of the opening quarter to lead twenty one to fifteen
- 8:49after one, but Morgan began shipping away as Hampton and
- 8:54Gamble scored layups, followed by a Trustee three to trim
- 8:59the deficit two two two, twenty six to twenty four.
- 9:03Gamble then scored a basket and one to give his
- 9:07team a twenty seven to twenty six advantage. Barker followed
- 9:11with a three ball from the top of the key
- 9:14to put Morgan up four thirty to twenty six. The
- 9:19Lions closed the period on an eleven to seven run,
- 9:24highlighted by consecutive baskets by Lake Atkins, to give Elliott
- 9:28a thirty seven to thirty two lead. However, Morgan got
- 9:32a much needed three from Bradley and a clutch steal
- 9:36and a layup from Gamble to tithe at the game
- 9:39a thirty seven heading to four. Barker ignited Morgan with
- 9:45a bank shop and a deep three to make it
- 9:47forty two to thirty seven Elliott's inn. Griffith answered with
- 9:52a three of his own, before Elijah Faulkner drilled another
- 9:56triple as the Lions regained the advantage forty three to
- 10:00forty two, but Bradley and Barker scored twice in less
- 10:05than a minute to stake Morgan to a forty eight
- 10:08to forty four edge heading into the fourth, a lead
- 10:12it would never relinquish. Hanthon's drive for a basket and
- 10:17one got the fourth quarter, scoring started for Morgan, Hanton
- 10:22and Barker came up with a huge defensive place with
- 10:26a block, shot and rebound respectively, as time quickly began
- 10:31to wind down. Then it was about getting the basketball
- 10:34in Gamble's hands, and as a Cougar point guard, sank
- 10:38four clutch free throws in the final minute. Barker then
- 10:44put Morgan's final two points at the free throw strike
- 10:48before getting the rebound and dribbling out the clock to
- 10:51steal the eighth point win. Morgan County, the state's fifth
- 10:56best free throw shooting team at seven percent for the season,
- 11:02converted the sixteen of eighteen at the line. Gamble number
- 11:06ten in free throw of accuracy in Kentucky is eighty
- 11:11six percent hint four in final forty four seconds and
- 11:16eleven of eleven for the game. As for coach Red Griffiths,
- 11:20he improves to a perfect eight to zero over the
- 11:24last four seasons in district tournament play and marks the
- 11:28first time in the school's history that the Morgan boys
- 11:32have won four consecutive district championships. Our next article is
- 11:38sixty second District Girls basketball Tournament. Lyttroll's double double sends
- 11:43Lady Cougar's to district title win over East Carter by
- 11:47David Patrick. Nelly Littell has been Morgan County's big game
- 11:51player from day one of the twenty twenty five to
- 11:54twenty sixth season, and last Thursday in Grayson was no different.
- 11:58The junior forward turned in a dominant performance of eighteen points,
- 12:03ten rebounds, two steals, and blocked a shot to lead
- 12:07the Lady Cougars to a fifty three to fifty win
- 12:12over East Carter in the championship game of the sixty
- 12:15second district tournament. It's always a special feeling when you
- 12:19can bring home a district title. Hedgecoch Derek Young said,
- 12:24this group has been fortunate to win three and it's
- 12:27crazy to think we only have nine district titles in
- 12:30the program's history and a third of those who have
- 12:33been in the last few years. Littroll scored the team's
- 12:37first and lands basket of the opening quarter. Em Mclinger
- 12:41added a pair of field goals while Sarah Jenkins knocked
- 12:45down a three pointer from the right wing. But East
- 12:49had the upper hand with a nineteen to twelve lead
- 12:52after one. However, the Lady Cougar defense stiffened up in
- 12:57the quarter, too, limiting the host to thee only one
- 13:02basket all literal. Jenkins and Clinger each scored individual buckets
- 13:07to trim the deficit to three twenty two to nineteen
- 13:11at break. The team's traded field goals for the majority
- 13:15of the third period, with Littoral's basket and one and
- 13:20consecutive scores by Clinger pulling Morgan within four. East followed
- 13:26with a five to zero run, but Little accounted for
- 13:30five points late in the quarter to give her team
- 13:34its first lead since early in the opening period, pardoning
- 13:42The Lady Cougars led thirty six to thirty five, heading
- 13:45it to the fourth, and Morgan saved its best basketball
- 13:49for the final eight minutes. Bella Smith opened the frame
- 13:52by banking in a pointer from the left side of
- 13:56the seven minute ten second mark for a forty to
- 14:00thirty seven lead. Nearly three minutes later, East regained the
- 14:05advantage when Brinley Walker banked in a three of her own,
- 14:11this from the top of the key. East led forty
- 14:15two to forty one, and the Cleaner then delivered back
- 14:18to back layups to give Morgan a forty five to
- 14:21forty four advantage East. Joshlyn Rudd counted with a three
- 14:25pointer to put East up too, but Smith followed with
- 14:28a pair of pivotal plays, the first coming with an
- 14:32assist to Literal for layup, followed by her second three
- 14:35ball of the period, this one from the left corner
- 14:39with a one minute and seventeen second remaining. With it,
- 14:42Morgan led fifty to forty eight and would not trail again.
- 14:46East tied it fifty all and Walker's lay up the
- 14:51final minute, but Klinger pulled a big defensive rebound with
- 14:55a possession later, and Sheenkins hit the biggest shot of
- 14:58her verirsty career with a basket and one with only
- 15:02twenty nine seconds remaining for a fifty three to fifty lead.
- 15:08The Lady Raiders would then have all three shots at
- 15:11the basket, all three pointers in the final seconds, but
- 15:15the last miss was rebounded by Literal as time expired
- 15:19to give Lady Cougar's then coveted sixty second district title.
- 15:24Klinger had seventeen points eight rebounds to assist, while Jenkins
- 15:29finished with eleven points for assist and two steals. Smith
- 15:33had missed her previous three point attempts before hitting the
- 15:37two big ones in the fourth. Seventh grader KK Halson
- 15:41had a free throw and a defensive rebound. Our next

- 19:03I'm thrilled to have the nation's top law enforcement chief
- 19:06here to meet Kentucky's finest police officers and prosecutors, Rogers
- 19:11said during the event. Collaboration is a key across local, state,
- 19:16and federal levels as we work to make our region
- 19:20and our nations safer. Police work is often a thankless
- 19:24job but not today. Director Ptil and I are here

- 22:02portion of Prader Road and mid property dispute. Multiple land
- 22:07owners in contested areas address court at February twenty sixth
- 22:11regular meeting by Miranda M. Cantrell. The Morgan County Fiscal
- 22:16Court during the regular February twenty sixth meeting, voted to
- 22:19remove a portion of a road from the county road
- 22:22system amid ongoing dispute among multiple property owners. Background information.
- 22:29The landing Crater family of Morgan County had previously requested
- 22:33that eight hundred forty four feet be removed from Prader Road,
- 22:38also known as c R. DASH twelve twenty three, which
- 22:43is located off Railroad Fork in Canal City. County Attorney
- 22:48Miles Holbrook stated during the February twenty sixth meeting that
- 22:52the road ends in the middle of what he describes
- 22:55as a pasture owned by the Praters. Individuals owning land
- 22:59beyond the Prater pasture appeared before the court to oppose
- 23:03the closure of the above mentioned portion of Prater Road,
- 23:07which they stated they have historically used to access their properties.
- 23:13Primary speakers opposing the partial closure included property owners Andrea
- 23:18Whykins of West Union Ohio, who introduced herself as the
- 23:22daughter of Linda Terry and the late Philip Terry of
- 23:25West Liberty, and Jerry Mead, a civil engineer and owner
- 23:30of Meeds Civil Engineering, p LLC, whose website states the
- 23:35firm is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and its license
- 23:38in several states throughout the southeastern United States, including Kentucky.
- 23:43Additional land owners in the area beyond the Prater pasture
- 23:47joined Blackens and Need at the meeting, which included several
- 23:51impassion exchanges between Whykins, Need attorney Hal Holbrook and Judge
- 23:57Executive Jim Gazey, and Othersnal City resident. Scott Crater, the
- 24:02son of Landing Crater, was also in attendance but did
- 24:05not address the court. Andrea Watkins opened a discussion with
- 24:09prepared remarks that she also provided the career of the
- 24:14following following her address. For over the last thirty five years,
- 24:20my family and other landowners have relied on Praider Road
- 24:23for access our property. Indeed clearly establishes our rights of
- 24:28access and along the long standing continuous use of roads
- 24:33supports prescriptive rights which protect our legal ability to access
- 24:38the property, even if portions of the road are located
- 24:42on or near the adjoining land. The adjoining land owner,
- 24:46mister Prater, claimed that the closure would not affect anyone.
- 24:50This is inaccurate not only our property, but my aunts
- 24:54and my cousin's cabin and property along with other land
- 24:58owner's property. Totally five hundred and six acres depends on
- 25:03this road. Several landowners and our surveyor will provide testimony
- 25:08regarding the impact of the proposed closure. Watckens, in her
- 25:13statement also through huge claims of other access. I would
- 25:17like to also state that it was mister Prater who
- 25:20took it upon himself over thirty five years ago to
- 25:23block and down the creek that we used prior. Watkins
- 25:28says it was by his doing that we have used
- 25:32Creative Road for the past thirty five years. Our deed
- 25:35states a road twelve feet wide as it is now
- 25:39is to be reserved. That road is c R twelve
- 25:43twenty three. What Coin cited several benefits of keeping the
- 25:47portion of Creator Road in question open, including the emergency access,
- 25:52contribution to the local economy via property tax, local purchases
- 25:57and tourism, and preservation of property value. Before concluding her address,
- 26:02Wifekins asked the Court to consider the legal deed rights
- 26:06along standing use in multiple parties affected and surveyor and
- 26:11documentation evidence. The Court has opportunity to uphold the rights
- 26:16of all landowners fairly. Watkins said failing to do so
- 26:21only would harm our family and others affected landowners, but
- 26:25also threatened the property rights of anyone who owns rural
- 26:28land in the county. Decisions about the prey to road
- 26:33c R twelve twenty three should reflect the interest of
- 26:37the community, not a single individual. This concludes, exerts from
- 26:42the recent editions of the Licking Valley Courier. Your reader
- 26:46has been janis on behalf of everyone here at radio.
