- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another tiny Spanish lesson? Luna: Absolutely. Last time we did telling time on the hour. That was fun. Lucas: It was. And you were great with 'Es la una' and 'Son las dos.' Luna: Thanks. But what if it's not exactly on the hour? Like one fifteen or two thirty? Lucas: Good question. That's exactly what we're doing today. We'll add quarter and half hours. Luna: Oh, I love that. Let's do it. Lucas: First phrase: Es la una y cuarto. It means 'It's one fifteen' or 'quarter past one.' Luna: Es la una y cuarto. Es la una y cuarto. Lucas: Perfect. Notice 'y cuarto' means 'and a quarter.' So one o'clock and a quarter. Luna: That makes sense. So if I say it's one fifteen, I say Es la una y cuarto. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's hear it slowly again. Es la una y cuarto. Luna: Es la una y cuarto. Lucas: Now let's try half past two. Son las dos y media. 'Media' means half. Luna: Son las dos y media. Son las dos y media. That's two thirty, right? Lucas: You got it. And for two o'clock we use 'son' because it's plural. Luna: Right. So if it's two thirty, I say Son las dos y media. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a quarter to three. Son las tres menos cuarto. Luna: Son las tres menos cuarto. Hmm, 'menos' means minus, so three minus a quarter. Lucas: Exactly. So it's a quarter to three, or two forty-five. Luna: Oh, that's clever. Son las tres menos cuarto. Lucas: Nice. Now let's put them in a little scene. What time is our lunch? Luna: Maybe at one fifteen? Es la una y cuarto. Lucas: Sure. Or we could meet at two thirty. Son las dos y media. Luna: But I have a class at two forty-five. Son las tres menos cuarto. Lucas: Ah, ok. Then let's do one fifteen. Es la una y cuarto. Luna: Perfect. See, these are useful. Lucas: Definitely. Now let's learn how to ask 'At what time?' That's ¿A qué hora? Luna: ¿A qué hora? ¿A qué hora? So if I ask 'At what time is the movie?' I say ¿A qué hora es la película? Lucas: Exactly. And to answer, you say 'At five' — A las cinco. Luna: A las cinco. A las cinco. So if the movie is at five, I say A las cinco. Lucas: Yes, and for one o'clock you say A la una, because it's singular. Luna: Ah, so A la una. That's a nice detail. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice with a mini dialogue. I'll ask you, ¿A qué hora es la cena? Luna: Hmm, maybe A las siete. Wait, we haven't learned seven yet. But I know the pattern. Lucas: You do. A las siete. Perfect. You're doing great. Luna: Thanks. So these phrases are all about telling time with quarters and halves. Lucas: Yes. And remember, for 'quarter past' we say y cuarto, for 'half past' y media, and for 'quarter to' menos cuarto. Luna: Got it. Let's review them all. Es la una y cuarto. Son las dos y media. Son las tres menos cuarto. ¿A qué hora? A las cinco. Lucas: That's five phrases. And you said them all perfectly. I'm impressed. Luna: Well, I had a good teacher. And it helps that we practice a lot. Lucas: That's the key. Repetition makes it stick. And speaking of sticking with it, you know what I love about this show? Luna: What's that? Lucas: We keep it totally ad-free. No annoying interruptions, just us learning together. There's a little link at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it helps us keep making these episodes without ads. Lucas: No pressure, but if you can, it's appreciated. Now, back to time. Let's try another scene. Luna: Ok. What time do we meet for the bus? Lucas: Let's say at eight fifteen. Es la una y cuarto? No, that's wrong. It's Son las ocho y cuarto. Luna: Oh, I see. Because it's plural. Son las ocho y cuarto. Lucas: Perfect. And if we meet at eight forty-five, we say Son las nueve menos cuarto. Luna: So quarter to nine. Son las nueve menos cuarto. That's a bit tricky but I think I got it. Lucas: You're doing great. Let's do one more quick review. How do you say 'at what time'? Luna: ¿A qué hora? Lucas: And 'at five'? Luna: A las cinco. Lucas: Beautiful. And 'it's one fifteen'? Luna: Es la una y cuarto. Lucas: Excellent. You're ready to tell time in Spanish for real. Luna: I think so. These phrases are going to be so useful. Lucas: Totally. And whether you're meeting friends or catching a train, you'll know what to say. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. This was another great episode. Lucas: You're welcome. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time.
