- 0:01Speaker 1: Ben Casey will not be seen this evening so that
- 0:03Speaker 1: we may bring you the 37th annual awards of the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Ben Casey will
- 0:09Speaker 1: be seen next week at its regularly scheduled time over
- 0:12Speaker 1: most of these ABC television stations.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Hi, my name is Jennifer Lawrence and you're listening to
- 0:26Speaker 2: Movie Meltdown.
- 0:39Speaker 3: It's showtime. The following feature has been rated R by
- 0:42Speaker 3: the Motion Picture Association of America. It is intended for
- 0:46Speaker 3: mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 1:14Speaker 4: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites you
- 1:17Speaker 4: to be its guest at the 37th annual awards presentation.
- 1:21Speaker 2: The Meltdown Awards.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the Academy of Motion
- 1:27Speaker 4: Picture Arts and Sciences.
- 1:28Speaker 2: What's up? Welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 1:31Speaker 5: I'm Ben.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I'm Phillip. And we're coming to you live via digital
- 1:34Speaker 2: recording from the Oddity Studios Pavilion, home of this year's
- 1:38Speaker 2: Meltdown Awards. The crowd is... Look at all the celebrities.
- 1:44Speaker 2: We had seat fillers. I had the cards out there
- 1:46Speaker 2: with a big picture and Nicole Kidman. I had to
- 1:48Speaker 2: park in all the seats.
- 1:50Speaker 5: They're literally everywhere. Yeah.
- 1:51Speaker 2: They're going to start showing up, though. You just wait
- 1:54Speaker 2: any minute now. When Jennifer Lawrence comes rolling in, you'll
- 1:58Speaker 2: be like, oh, hey, have some pork.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I feel like she'd be down for some hors d'oeuvres.
- 2:04Speaker 6: She'd be down for the hors d'oeuvres.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. She knows the hometown. She knows what she's doing.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So yes, it's Oscar night. And as usual, we here
- 2:12Speaker 2: at Movie Meltdown feel that maybe the Oscars aren't the end-all,
- 2:17Speaker 2: be-all of film awards. And maybe there are some other
- 2:20Speaker 2: categories out there. And maybe some films they overlooked. They
- 2:26Speaker 2: might have missed some nominees. So we've created... The foilers,
- 2:31Speaker 2: and yes, the oh-so-coveted trophy. I know you have, Phillip.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Have you witnessed all the wonderfulness that is a foiler
- 2:41Speaker 2: in all its glory? I can't remember if you were
- 2:45Speaker 2: at one of the old ones. I was at the one.
- 2:50Speaker 2: You won't forget the foilers.
- 2:52Speaker 5: I think the last time it was before the foilers,
- 2:55Speaker 5: I want to say, because it was like, It's.
- 2:58Speaker 1: A while back.
- 2:58Speaker 2: That was a while back. So, yes, here's the foilers. Coveted, world-renowned. Plus,
- 3:07Speaker 2: you can take home leftovers. That's the real reason.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Just something that's so creepy about it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: It's creepy.
- 3:13Speaker 6: This one's staring at me. The other one is looking off.
- 3:16Speaker 5: No, just this one.
- 3:19Speaker 6: I'm just going to turn that around.
- 3:20Speaker 2: He's eyeballing you.
- 3:21Speaker 5: There we go.
- 3:23Speaker 2: So, yeah, there's many reasons I went with this as
- 3:27Speaker 2: our trophy. Because, number one, it's creepy. And it seems
- 3:30Speaker 2: fitting for us. Number two, it's shiny. It is shiny.
- 3:33Speaker 2: We all like things that are shiny.
- 3:34Speaker 5: It is shiny.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And you can take home some pork leftovers. So, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 2: coveted award. So, unlike some ceremonies, we have a host.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Three of them. So, one more reason we're a little
- 3:50Speaker 2: better than some of those other award ceremonies out there. So,
- 3:55Speaker 2: as you came in on the red carpet, do you
- 3:57Speaker 2: want to do? Normally they do, who are you wearing?
- 4:00Speaker 2: On the foilers we do, what are you wearing? Seems
- 4:04Speaker 2: a little more fitting. I have once again gone with
- 4:07Speaker 2: the Tux t-shirt. Classy, as always. With the bacon tie,
- 4:13Speaker 2: because it seems fitting. And, you know, the finest of
- 4:17Speaker 2: Levi's is, you know, spare no expense. Would you like
- 4:23Speaker 2: to plug your designers?
- 4:26Speaker 5: A blue, like, Old Navy sweater or hoodie type situation. Yeah,
- 4:37Speaker 5: not to be. Yeah, going real Red Sea here.
- 4:41Speaker 2: That's how we roll here at the Old Mountain Awards.
- 4:44Speaker 6: I am wearing a gray Amazon zip-up hoodie from 2015.
- 4:50Speaker 6: When I still work there that is covered in some
- 4:53Speaker 6: sort of stain from when I dropped my lunch on
- 4:56Speaker 6: it the other day and couldn't be bothered to clean it.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Just like the celebrities on the red carpet. And pants.
- 5:03Speaker 6: Oh, and my Black Sabbath 1978 World Tour t-shirt that
- 5:07Speaker 6: I'm very fond of.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Nice. Very nice. See, I think we kind of outdo
- 5:12Speaker 2: most celebrities on the red carpet. Black Sabbath?
- 5:16Speaker 3: Really?
- 5:19Speaker 2: So... Yes, we've brought the food out. I've added mustard
- 5:24Speaker 2: this year. Two kinds of mustard.
- 5:27Speaker 6: Don't sell yourself short.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Again, very fancy. I wouldn't go so far as to
- 5:31Speaker 2: say anybody's going to roll up in a Rolls Royce
- 5:34Speaker 2: and roll the window down, but this one's also coarse ground,
- 5:38Speaker 2: so it's very hardcore. That's how we roll here. But
- 5:42Speaker 2: we also had another potential option, and I think you'll
- 5:46Speaker 2: thank me that I scrapped it. You may have even
- 5:50Speaker 2: seen this at the grocery. They were selling these molds
- 5:52Speaker 2: that look like little pigs. No, I did not. It's
- 5:56Speaker 2: in the other room if you want to. But yeah,
- 5:58Speaker 2: it looked like little pigs. And then you could put
- 6:00Speaker 2: your little Smokies in there and then mold around it.
- 6:06Speaker 2: But the specific thing that they told you to mold
- 6:08Speaker 2: it with was pancake batter. I'm like, but those aren't
- 6:13Speaker 2: like sausage links. It's little Smokies, which is kind of
- 6:18Speaker 2: a different flavor. Now, don't get me wrong, we were
- 6:21Speaker 2: still going to eat them, but after I bought this
- 6:24Speaker 2: dumb thing, I did a continuous, for probably the last month,
- 6:28Speaker 2: I've done nothing but eat those stupid things because I
- 6:30Speaker 2: kept attempting to come up with a good way to
- 6:33Speaker 2: make it work.
- 6:34Speaker 7: It doesn't.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I've tried different times. I've tried readjusting the temperature. It
- 6:40Speaker 2: still just kind of burns the top of them, which
- 6:43Speaker 2: is hard to do in silicone. But it still finds
- 6:45Speaker 2: a weird way to burn a weird spot on their back,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and yet the whole rest of it stays kind of squishy.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And on top of that, it's little smokies with pancake batter, which, yeah, so.
- 6:57Speaker 6: I don't think that sounds terrible.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I mean, it was all right. Again, I've eaten more
- 7:01Speaker 2: than I needed to, but it's still, like, it would
- 7:04Speaker 2: work better if it was, like, sausage links, but I
- 7:06Speaker 2: can't really find those in the right size, and it's
- 7:09Speaker 2: way too much trouble to, like, make my own sausage links,
- 7:12Speaker 2: and that's a lot of work, so. Yeah, but I
- 7:15Speaker 2: think you can also freeze those silicone things, so we'll
- 7:19Speaker 2: just have pig-shaped ice cubes.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Okay.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I figured that'll work. All right. Are we ready to
- 7:26Speaker 2: roll into the categories? This one really just involves me
- 7:30Speaker 2: doing a lot of reading, which I don't like. But
- 7:33Speaker 2: I was thinking as we... Because now I just kind
- 7:36Speaker 2: of read off the winners. If you'd like for future years,
- 7:39Speaker 2: if you'd like me to put it in an envelope...
- 7:41Speaker 2: And then you could read it. And then you wouldn't
- 7:44Speaker 2: actually know the winner, so I could be Price Waterhouse.
- 7:46Speaker 2: It'd be great.
- 7:49Speaker 6: I'll do that, provided you build a podium that we
- 7:51Speaker 6: can stand behind.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Not the first podium I've had at one point. Again,
- 7:58Speaker 2: while we're telling podium stories, at the first Yeti Spaghetti
- 8:01Speaker 2: Show that Movie Meltdown put together, I did specifically request
- 8:06Speaker 2: a podium and then taped a picture of a Yeti
- 8:09Speaker 2: on the front of it. And then stood in front
- 8:11Speaker 2: of it to address the crowd of thousands, which obviously
- 8:14Speaker 2: came out. But yeah, it wasn't really necessary to have
- 8:19Speaker 2: that podium, but I requested it anyway. Yeah. All right.
- 8:26Speaker 2: So as usual, our categories are better than any other
- 8:31Speaker 2: award show. So this is one that I.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Think i made this one up and i still think
- 8:36Speaker 2: it's really i like when they stray away from the
- 8:38Speaker 2: movies and into just the business or the people's lives
- 8:43Speaker 2: in general so this one is right up that alley
- 8:47Speaker 2: the most questionable career decision made by an actor actress
- 8:50Speaker 2: or filmmaker in 2018 now I'll also, as we've gone through,
- 8:57Speaker 2: sometimes there's ones that don't even get enough votes to
- 8:59Speaker 2: be in the... Because I'll usually... I don't even bother
- 9:02Speaker 2: reading all five of them and leaving you in suspense.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I just read the other four that got votes and
- 9:07Speaker 2: then give.
- 9:08Speaker 7: You the winner.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Because why double discuss it? So, yeah. But occasionally we
- 9:14Speaker 2: also get comments from people that aren't even in the nominees.
- 9:17Speaker 2: So this one I thought was interesting because we had
- 9:19Speaker 2: someone write in. They're questioning Ben Affleck exiting the Batman.
- 9:26Speaker 2: When just two years ago on this very award show,
- 9:29Speaker 2: we had people questioning the fact that Ben Affleck was Batman.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I just thought it was funny that now they're like, dude,
- 9:35Speaker 2: what are you doing leaving? I'm like, you fans were
- 9:38Speaker 2: just complaining. Movie geeks, comic book geeks, you just can't
- 9:43Speaker 2: make them happy.
- 9:44Speaker 5: It's time to get used to them.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I know. The thing is, he wasn't bad. He's the
- 9:48Speaker 2: best thing about those movies. Certainly isn't Superman. All right,
- 9:56Speaker 2: the other one, I thought this one was just, again,
- 9:59Speaker 2: this was it. even officially a nominee i just like
- 10:02Speaker 2: the description Disney for making Christopher Robin. So Pooh and
- 10:08Speaker 2: Tigger and Piglet, they weren't just Christopher Robin's imagination as
- 10:11Speaker 2: he played with the stuffed animals as a little kid.
- 10:14Speaker 2: They were real sentient beings who other people could see
- 10:17Speaker 2: and talk to. What the hell are they? Is this
- 10:19Speaker 2: some sort of insane voodoo shit that's not going to
- 10:22Speaker 2: end well for Pooh and his friends? Are you going
- 10:25Speaker 2: to be whisked away to some lab? Where is their soul?
- 10:28Speaker 2: Can we finally prove there is a soul? What is
- 10:31Speaker 2: the nature of existence? Why am I freaking out in
- 10:33Speaker 2: the middle of this kid's movie? Thank you. Thank you
- 10:37Speaker 2: for that nominee. Yes.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Stay safe wherever you are.
- 10:40Speaker 2: They didn't quite make it into the running. Again, I
- 10:45Speaker 2: keep them all anonymous. This character will return with at
- 10:48Speaker 2: least one more rant later that I'm sure you'll recognize
- 10:51Speaker 2: the author once again.
- 10:53Speaker 7: So now.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I kind of have a feeling you might recognize him.
- 10:58Speaker 2: He's beloved to the Meltdown group.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Oh, I was thinking she.
- 11:03Speaker 2: No, no, not that. Not that one. All right, so
- 11:07Speaker 2: the actual nominees. And some of these are very good questions.
- 11:13Speaker 2: First off, Helen Mirren in Winchester. What the hell?
- 11:19Speaker 6: I watched it.
- 11:20Speaker 2: It's watchable. It's not terrible. It is well beneath Helen Mirren.
- 11:27Speaker 2: So I don't know what bet she lost, but yeah.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Helen Mirren in Winchester.
- 11:33Speaker 6: We had.
- 11:35Speaker 2: A good amount of people coming in with anybody involved
- 11:38Speaker 2: in the Happy Time murders. Specifically, what in the hell
- 11:41Speaker 2: was Melissa McCarthy thinking? I'm kind of right there with
- 11:45Speaker 2: you on that. I haven't watched that one yet. Is anybody...
- 11:49Speaker 2: I want to.
- 11:50Speaker 6: I've seen it.
- 11:51Speaker 2: We've recently discussed our thing for puppets. Yeah, I've seen it.
- 11:55Speaker 6: You know how I feel about puppetry and the Henson
- 11:59Speaker 6: Company and all of that.
- 12:01Speaker 2: And it was.
- 12:03Speaker 6: I don't want to say it was bad, but I
- 12:05Speaker 6: can't really say it was good either.
- 12:07Speaker 2: So you didn't watch it? Yeah. See, here's my thing.
- 12:09Speaker 5: It feels like a novelty thing.
- 12:11Speaker 2: And it feels like it's trying too hard. That's what
- 12:15Speaker 2: I think is almost annoying at this point. If somebody
- 12:18Speaker 2: wants to take it on themselves as seriously as Henson did,
- 12:24Speaker 2: and I don't mean that the material has to be serious,
- 12:27Speaker 2: just the level of commitment.
- 12:28Speaker 8: Okay.
- 12:29Speaker 2: But when you're trying, like to me, like making puppets
- 12:33Speaker 2: say bad words and have sex and do all this
- 12:36Speaker 2: other crap, I'm like, that's such an easy move, you know?
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'm like, it just feels cheap.
- 12:41Speaker 6: And there are times where it feels like, oh, this
- 12:44Speaker 6: is just a foul joke for a foul joke. Then
- 12:47Speaker 6: there are a couple of incredibly obscene moments where they have,
- 12:52Speaker 6: I will give them credit for not just pushing the boundaries,
- 12:56Speaker 6: but like going past the boundary and just Making the
- 12:59Speaker 6: boundary a tiny dot in the rear view mirror. And
- 13:03Speaker 6: then other moments, I felt like it just fell flat.
- 13:08Speaker 6: Like it could have gone with another run through in
- 13:11Speaker 6: the writing department.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yeah, just the trailer for me, a lot of moments
- 13:15Speaker 2: fell flat. And I'm just like, wow, I am two
- 13:18Speaker 2: minutes worth of this movie so far. And that's the
- 13:20Speaker 2: other thing, like with the push in the boundaries, I'm like,
- 13:23Speaker 2: to me, there's only one movie that did it. And, like,
- 13:28Speaker 2: once you've seen Meet the Feebles, like, you're wasting your
- 13:31Speaker 2: time trying to make a dirty movie with puppets. I'm like,
- 13:34Speaker 2: the shit that goes on in there. And, again, that's
- 13:37Speaker 2: somebody who was committed to making an insane movie that
- 13:41Speaker 2: just happened to have a bunch of puppets in it. But, like,
- 13:45Speaker 2: he would have made some weird version of that movie regardless. So, yeah,
- 13:48Speaker 2: once I've seen that, I'm just like, anytime I see
- 13:50Speaker 2: somebody trying to do an adult-themed puppet thing, I'm just like, eh.
- 13:56Speaker 2: It's going to be lightweight compared to Meet the Feebles.
- 13:58Speaker 6: Yeah, and it is. And I feel like, you know,
- 14:02Speaker 6: Meet the Feebles has a moment about the halfway point
- 14:06Speaker 6: where it sort of stalls out a little bit.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 5: But it picks back up.
- 14:12Speaker 6: Happy Time Murders kind of stalls pretty quickly. And I
- 14:18Speaker 6: recommend checking it out just to say, you know, I've
- 14:20Speaker 6: seen this. And again, the puppetry is amazing. The sets
- 14:25Speaker 6: are amazing, but the story is just really one-dimensional and
- 14:30Speaker 6: just kind of falls flat.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And I do question Melissa McCarthy, because I do think
- 14:35Speaker 2: she's amazingly talented. So this is a weird call for her.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Especially since she's got a legit movie that's kind of
- 14:44Speaker 2: getting respect this year, so that she balances it the
- 14:47Speaker 2: same year with this puppet movie.
- 14:49Speaker 6: Part of her problem in this movie is that She
- 14:52Speaker 6: plays the straight man character. And so all of her
- 14:56Speaker 6: comedic talents are pretty much wasted.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I mean, someone who goes well above and beyond the
- 15:02Speaker 2: normal pratfalls and is always there to be the joke. Yeah,
- 15:07Speaker 2: that's not the place to put her in anymore. Speaking
- 15:10Speaker 2: of things that might not be as funny as they
- 15:13Speaker 2: should be, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly reuniting to
- 15:16Speaker 2: make Holmes and Watson.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:21Speaker 2: And this one, again, several people specifically, anyone and everyone
- 15:26Speaker 2: involved in the overboard gender swap remake. Specific quote that
- 15:31Speaker 2: came with one of them was, WTF question mark. Like
- 15:36Speaker 2: that's all it said. And I'm like, all right, I
- 15:39Speaker 2: feel you. But the winner, see, this was one of
- 15:44Speaker 2: those moments when I was just like, it didn't occur
- 15:47Speaker 2: to me, even though I posed the question. And the
- 15:49Speaker 2: first one of these came in and I went, Oh yeah, no,
- 15:51Speaker 2: that's it. Like, there are no other answers. Like, no
- 15:54Speaker 2: one else, no matter what dumb movie you made, nothing
- 15:57Speaker 2: comes within miles of this. The winner is Kevin Spacey's
- 16:02Speaker 2: Let Me Be Frank video.
- 16:04Speaker 7: Ugh.
- 16:06Speaker 2: What the, what? I'm creeped out by thinking about it now.
- 16:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Especially since he put it out at Christmas. You know,
- 16:15Speaker 2: gather the kids around the internet. And, um... It's just weird.
- 16:21Speaker 2: And at a time when you'd think he'd want to
- 16:25Speaker 2: go into hiding, he puts out a weird video. He
- 16:28Speaker 2: does it mostly in character. It makes no sense. I mean,
- 16:34Speaker 2: not that we didn't know he's a weird guy anyway,
- 16:36Speaker 2: but what the fuck, Kevin Spacey?
- 16:39Speaker 6: We could ask that question a lot over the past year.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Or the entirety of his life, probably. But we just
- 16:47Speaker 2: found out recently. Although, didn't we always? We always kind
- 16:50Speaker 2: of knew he was a weird dude. That's why he
- 16:54Speaker 2: was successful. He had that level, that weird edge to
- 16:58Speaker 2: him that made you kind of feel like, something's not
- 17:01Speaker 2: right about this guy. That's why he played all those
- 17:03Speaker 2: characters so well. Sometimes it's not acting. Sometimes he's just
- 17:08Speaker 2: a weird dude.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Alright.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Next up, the most shocking moment in a 2018 film. Again,
- 17:13Speaker 2: this one The first time the winner came in, I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 17:19Speaker 2: all right. And it's funny how many, this is one
- 17:22Speaker 2: of those times when everybody meets in the same spot.
- 17:26Speaker 2: But there are a few other options. The Nicolas Cage
- 17:30Speaker 2: bathroom freakout in Mandy, which only, I think, got voted
- 17:34Speaker 2: for by this person because it came with a real
- 17:36Speaker 2: life story. When the guy in the theater directly behind
- 17:40Speaker 2: me started throwing up during that scene, it really solidified
- 17:43Speaker 2: the mood.
- 17:44Speaker 5: There you go.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Movie magic. The third act moment in Sorry to Bother You,
- 17:51Speaker 2: which if you haven't seen it, the comment is, there's
- 17:54Speaker 2: no question what that moment is when you see it.
- 17:57Speaker 2: So once you get there, you'll be like, oh yeah,
- 18:01Speaker 2: I remember. They talked about that. It got nominated for
- 18:04Speaker 2: a reason. This one I like, being a smartass. Aquaman's
- 18:10Speaker 2: box office total. What's the most shocking moment? I'm like, yeah,
- 18:16Speaker 2: I don't fully get it, but I still hear good things.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Quite a few people, and this one I do give
- 18:23Speaker 2: them credit for. Avengers Infinity War going with the full
- 18:27Speaker 2: fail ending. That is kind of amazing that a studio
- 18:31Speaker 2: movie with almost all of the biggest celebrities in the
- 18:35Speaker 2: world in this one movie with 10 years of planning...
- 18:38Speaker 2: decided to go that dark like granted we know what's
- 18:43Speaker 2: coming but it doesn't matter they still ended the movie
- 18:46Speaker 2: killing all their people spoilers i will try to put
- 18:49Speaker 2: the spoilers in which there's one coming up for the
- 18:52Speaker 2: winner here so i will try to throw out spoiler
- 18:55Speaker 2: alerts i'm assuming everybody knows the avenger deal at this
- 18:57Speaker 2: point but spoilers right now but i'll still try to
- 19:01Speaker 2: keep it as generalized as possible by a huge margin
- 19:05Speaker 2: damn near everybody that voted The winner is the decapitation
- 19:10Speaker 2: scene in Hereditary. Specifically, they're like, the decapitation followed immediately
- 19:16Speaker 2: by the smash cut is... I mean... It had an
- 19:20Speaker 2: effect on people.
- 19:21Speaker 5: I mean, that was the only time in a theater
- 19:23Speaker 5: this last year where everyone.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Was like, oh, fuck!
- 19:27Speaker 5: Like, loudly saying fuck out loud. It was pretty amazing.
- 19:32Speaker 2: You know, that's a.
- 19:33Speaker 6: Rare moment, but when it does happen... It's really satisfying.
- 19:38Speaker 5: I mean, not just one guy saying, oh, everyone, fuck!
- 19:43Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. With good reason.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Sometimes you just end up in a theater with a loud,
- 19:48Speaker 2: obnoxious person. but when everybody goes oh no you yeah
- 19:52Speaker 2: you're right you're right to scream out what the fuck
- 19:55Speaker 2: just happened yep that's that was one of those moments
- 19:59Speaker 2: that even as weird and twisted as that movie is
- 20:02Speaker 2: you still don't really see that coming and not at
- 20:04Speaker 2: that point like it's it's pretty awesome Next up, the
- 20:08Speaker 2: most miscast actor and or actress for their role in
- 20:12Speaker 2: a 2018 film. Another interesting, not even a nominee, but
- 20:17Speaker 2: sometimes I like throwing out the other options just to
- 20:19Speaker 2: kind of counterbalance these things. One of them specifically said,
- 20:24Speaker 2: kind of has a point, Michael B. Jordan in Black Panther.
- 20:28Speaker 2: That man is too charismatic. You can't cast him as
- 20:31Speaker 2: a villain unless you don't want me to care about
- 20:33Speaker 2: the hero. I'm like, he's really like by the I
- 20:38Speaker 2: mean even when we discussed it I was like he's
- 20:41Speaker 2: not really a villain I mean there's one or two
- 20:44Speaker 2: moments when he then moves into full villain mode but
- 20:47Speaker 2: for the most part of the movie you're just like
- 20:49Speaker 2: I mean he's got a point the reason he's pissed
- 20:53Speaker 2: I mean like I get it like so yeah I
- 20:56Speaker 2: think so much of that is credit to Michael B.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Jordan for being able to pull off that kind of
- 21:01Speaker 2: role so but The actual nominees. This was one of
- 21:06Speaker 2: my favorite answers of the whole thing. Michelle Williams wig
- 21:10Speaker 2: in Venom. I thought that was really funny. Another odd choice.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Michelle Williams, Oscar nominee. What do you want to make next?
- 21:21Speaker 2: Venom's girlfriend? I don't know. Very strange. More strange casting.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Oprah Winfrey in A Wrinkle in Time. Can you watch
- 21:32Speaker 2: that and not be like, Look, it's Oprah. Look, it's Oprah.
- 21:35Speaker 2: She's too big of a personality at this point. You
- 21:39Speaker 2: can't do the color purple anymore. She could pull that
- 21:42Speaker 2: off when she was a nobody, but she is one
- 21:44Speaker 2: of the biggest people in the industry. She is one
- 21:47Speaker 2: of the most recognizable people in the world. She's kind
- 21:50Speaker 2: of boxed herself out of being a regular actress anymore.
- 21:55Speaker 2: I think from the trailer day one, I was just like, look,
- 21:59Speaker 2: it's Oprah. I can't put it aside. This one hurts,
- 22:03Speaker 2: because I like her a lot. Olivia Munn in Predator.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Their comment was, It's almost a skill in and of
- 22:11Speaker 2: itself to never have chemistry with anyone in any movie ever,
- 22:16Speaker 2: but somehow she pulls it off. Damn it, I like her,
- 22:20Speaker 2: but at least in that movie he's got a point.
- 22:23Speaker 2: She just seems off the whole movie. Not that that
- 22:26Speaker 2: movie doesn't have... I like it more than most, but
- 22:30Speaker 2: we'll get back to it later. This one, again, I
- 22:33Speaker 2: like the phrasing. What's his name from Solo?
- 22:38Speaker 3: Sure.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Alden Ehrenreich? Alden, I'm sorry if that's not it. Please
- 22:47Speaker 2: come on the show. We've got your seat filler sitting
- 22:49Speaker 2: over here. I mean, just come on in whenever you
- 22:52Speaker 2: get here. You can pronounce it, of course. So, yeah, again,
- 22:55Speaker 2: I think that guy's like... As I said on the
- 22:59Speaker 2: other movie I just saw him in, he's so damn likable.
- 23:02Speaker 2: I think if anybody can kind of get close to
- 23:06Speaker 2: pulling off Harrison Ford, he did a great job. So
- 23:09Speaker 2: I disagree. But that was coming in. I just like
- 23:13Speaker 2: what's-his-name from so long. And the winner is an odd
- 23:17Speaker 2: one I did not see coming, but I guess they're right.
- 23:20Speaker 2: John Travolta in Gotti. That's a weird casting choice. And
- 23:28Speaker 2: sometimes I'm like, all right, I can see it. You
- 23:31Speaker 2: did the hair, maybe. Again, I might sit there the
- 23:34Speaker 2: whole time going, look, it's John Travolta. What's John Travolta
- 23:37Speaker 2: on trial for this time? Damn that Vinnie Barbarino. Next up,
- 23:45Speaker 2: the most impressive visuals, CG, practical, or whatever, in a
- 23:49Speaker 2: 2018 film. I like opening it up to everything. Again,
- 23:53Speaker 2: I can only hope we get puppets most of the time.
- 23:56Speaker 2: It doesn't happen all that often in happy time murders
- 23:59Speaker 2: didn't come up just spoiler first off and again most
- 24:03Speaker 2: of these i can't argue with uh avengers infinity war
- 24:07Speaker 2: yeah yeah we all know that um annihilation which they
- 24:12Speaker 2: say may be the most psychotropic movie of the year
- 24:16Speaker 2: again coming coming fighting the uh backlash mostly from me
- 24:22Speaker 2: maybe aquaman The scene where Aquaman and Mera dive into
- 24:26Speaker 2: the water with all the thresh chasing them and the
- 24:29Speaker 2: red light storm is one of the most aesthetically pleasing
- 24:32Speaker 2: scenes I have ever seen in Aquaman. So, you know,
- 24:38Speaker 2: it's good that they're delivering quality stuff for Aquaman. Next up, Mandy,
- 24:46Speaker 2: which is a pretty popular one this year. But the winner,
- 24:50Speaker 2: and again, a good margin, and rightfully so, Spider-Man Into
- 24:55Speaker 2: the Spider-Verse. Here's another one of these. Again, I'm mostly
- 25:00Speaker 2: having this just for the comments now. Like looking directly
- 25:03Speaker 2: into the sun, when I blink, I can still see
- 25:06Speaker 2: the afterglow of Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse. I need all
- 25:09Speaker 2: movies to look this good from now on.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Wow.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Kind of a poetic critical take.
- 25:18Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. That's how you know you got
- 25:22Speaker 2: a good movie and You've got good people out there
- 25:24Speaker 2: that come up with these comments. So, to counterbalance those
- 25:29Speaker 2: good visuals, the most obnoxious use of CGI in a
- 25:33Speaker 2: 2018 film. That's one I like, and yeah, I felt
- 25:37Speaker 2: this way the whole movie. The unnecessary creepy smiles in
- 25:41Speaker 2: Truth or Dare. It's not a great movie anyway, but
- 25:44Speaker 2: adding those didn't help. It's watchable. It's sort of fun-ish.
- 25:52Speaker 5: Okay, I actually didn't know about this movie, but I'm
- 25:54Speaker 5: going to guess it's a horror movie, but it's about,
- 25:58Speaker 5: get this, the very popular party game Truth or Dare.
- 26:04Speaker 5: How did you see that?
- 26:06Speaker 2: Are you a screenwriter? Wait a minute. What's funny is
- 26:10Speaker 2: there's like 48 movies called Truth or Dare. I mean,
- 26:15Speaker 2: there was another one that came out that same year
- 26:18Speaker 2: that was like another weird indie film version of that
- 26:22Speaker 2: idea that I heard was way better. So again, you're
- 26:25Speaker 2: already dealing with an unoriginal idea, more or less, a
- 26:29Speaker 2: title that's out there 47 times and Madonna coming up
- 26:32Speaker 2: on your heels.
- 26:33Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:35Speaker 2: All right, next up, Black Panther. Now, they specifically on
- 26:40Speaker 2: several occasions, the rhinos were mentioned. All right, I'll give
- 26:44Speaker 2: you that. And I'm not going to argue the final fight.
- 26:48Speaker 2: It's a big video game scene. That whole falling, both
- 26:51Speaker 2: of them fighting each. It's very video game-y. So, yeah,
- 26:56Speaker 2: I'll give you that one. There's a lot of good
- 26:57Speaker 2: stuff in Black Panther, but that final fight's not really it.
- 27:02Speaker 2: This one, I just like the phrasing. The Silver Surfer
- 27:05Speaker 2: cop-out ending of Annihilation. I don't totally agree, but I
- 27:10Speaker 2: like the phrasing. Almost as much as the next one,
- 27:16Speaker 2: the entire nomination was worded as Shut Up, I Like Venom.
- 27:24Speaker 2: I just thought it was funny that they outed themselves
- 27:28Speaker 2: even in the nomination of it and yet, Shut Up,
- 27:31Speaker 2: I Like Venom. But, Once again, a good amount came
- 27:36Speaker 2: in specifically for Ready Player One. A lot of people
- 27:41Speaker 2: did not take to that in the geek world. For
- 27:44Speaker 2: something that was that steeped in geekdom, I think that
- 27:48Speaker 2: was it. The deck was already stacked against them.
- 27:52Speaker 6: Everyone I've talked to who read the book hated the movie.
- 27:57Speaker 6: Just absolutely hated it.
- 27:58Speaker 2: It's got some good things about it. The visuals... are
- 28:03Speaker 2: hit and miss. It's like there's ones that I'm like, no,
- 28:05Speaker 2: this is awesome. This is trying really hard. You haven't
- 28:10Speaker 2: seen it, though?
- 28:10Speaker 5: Mm-mm. I saw... Well, I saw enough. I saw the...
- 28:18Speaker 5: There's a clip. Spoiler alert.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I was going to say, did you see the good part?
- 28:21Speaker 2: Because the most interesting part involves the shining.
- 28:25Speaker 5: Well, I was going to say, that's what turned me
- 28:26Speaker 5: off if I wanted to see it.
- 28:28Speaker 8: No, that.
- 28:28Speaker 7: I mean.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Truthfully, that's the most impressive part.
- 28:31Speaker 7: Really?
- 28:32Speaker 2: Yeah. For me, only because I kind of like any
- 28:35Speaker 2: time you have a chance to sort of revisit a property,
- 28:41Speaker 2: which rarely happens in film. So the fact that there's
- 28:45Speaker 2: a weird shining tie-in thing that, again, I think you
- 28:49Speaker 2: like The Shining. So, Philip, I'd say watch it just
- 28:52Speaker 2: to get your take on that because it's not terrible.
- 28:54Speaker 2: It's just.
- 28:56Speaker 6: not.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Overly original in a lot of aspects that's that was
- 29:00Speaker 2: kind of the way people made it sound yeah but
- 29:03Speaker 2: that part in the middle which again is probably something
- 29:06Speaker 2: that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way but
- 29:07Speaker 2: i i thought it was an interesting moment in the
- 29:10Speaker 2: movie more so than a lot of the other regular
- 29:13Speaker 2: stuff so now this category has become problematic and i
- 29:20Speaker 2: tried to clarify and it Didn't really fix it this year.
- 29:23Speaker 2: So we're going to have to reword things moving forward.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Because I remember last year, we came up with this
- 29:30Speaker 2: category specifically because a certain member of the staff used
- 29:33Speaker 2: to always be like, he kills good. So it became like,
- 29:37Speaker 2: to me, it was like the Jason kind of kid.
- 29:40Speaker 2: it was like oh my god you just smashed him
- 29:41Speaker 2: into a tree in a sleeping bag that's the most
- 29:44Speaker 2: awesome kill ever so originally it was like most horrific
- 29:48Speaker 2: kill you know best horrific kill like and then people
- 29:52Speaker 2: started like voting for like super serious deaths and Like,
- 29:57Speaker 2: last year, I guess spoilers for Logan, but, I mean, like,
- 30:00Speaker 2: the big send-off of several beloved characters were getting lumped
- 30:05Speaker 2: in with the, like, and then he slashed him with
- 30:08Speaker 2: a butcher knife. You know, I'm just like, those are
- 30:10Speaker 2: two different types of moments. Like, we need to, so
- 30:13Speaker 2: this year I did, like, A and B. I did subsections,
- 30:16Speaker 2: but I guess, again, I tried to word the other
- 30:20Speaker 2: one as most, like, epic death scene, and still people
- 30:23Speaker 2: were just going, like, And the funniest part was... I'm like, okay, wait,
- 30:26Speaker 2: this isn't working. So there were only a few that
- 30:29Speaker 2: came in that actually fit the bill of epic death scenes.
- 30:32Speaker 2: So basically that became the winner. And everything else just
- 30:35Speaker 2: went up to the best horrific kill category. So here
- 30:39Speaker 2: are the nominees. The contortion dance and or the killing
- 30:45Speaker 2: dance scene from Suspiria. There were some exploding heads mentioned.
- 30:51Speaker 5: Um.
- 30:52Speaker 2: The two guys that get shivved with a broken and
- 30:54Speaker 2: half cow femur in the butcher shop fight from The
- 30:57Speaker 2: Night Comes for Us, which I don't think I'd heard
- 31:00Speaker 2: much about. And then after seeing several nominees, I went
- 31:03Speaker 2: and found the trailer. I was like, holy shit, why
- 31:05Speaker 2: am I not watching this right now? So, yeah, I'm
- 31:09Speaker 2: on board already. I heard broken cow femur. I was
- 31:11Speaker 2: on board.
- 31:12Speaker 5: That whole fight sequence is nuts.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Everything about it looks pretty impressive as lots of action
- 31:20Speaker 2: fighting kind of stuff goes. This one, again, it depends
- 31:25Speaker 2: on the level of geek that you are, whether you
- 31:27Speaker 2: appreciate this nominee. The death of the red dress girl
- 31:31Speaker 2: in Rampage. Cathartic on so many levels. There was a
- 31:38Speaker 2: moment watching it where I was like, but, oh man,
- 31:40Speaker 2: that's taking me back, y'all. Next up, X-Force parachuting from
- 31:49Speaker 2: Deadpool 2. I won't go any further into that, but
- 31:52Speaker 2: the whole parachuting escapade, let's, let's leave it at that.
- 31:58Speaker 2: But the winner is again, spoilers, the decapitation in hereditary.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Obviously people were just not ready for that moment. It
- 32:09Speaker 2: took both categories. So I, I don't know what else
- 32:12Speaker 2: to do. So yeah, again, next year for the other
- 32:15Speaker 2: half of this, we'll have to reword it and put
- 32:18Speaker 2: in there like, funny dead serious dead because the only
- 32:23Speaker 2: thing that got any nominations that like actually kind of
- 32:25Speaker 2: fit the bill were from infinity war so infinity war
- 32:30Speaker 2: is the winner i mean basically they're just like the
- 32:32Speaker 2: last 10 minutes of infinity war specifically parker the death
- 32:36Speaker 2: of vision like everything going on in that last battle
- 32:41Speaker 2: is pretty epic and depressing really so yeah that one
- 32:46Speaker 2: fits as like a That's the level of heroic send-off
- 32:50Speaker 2: we're talking about more so than me. And then he
- 32:53Speaker 2: got stabbed in the head. Don't get me wrong. Those
- 32:57Speaker 2: can be great. All right. Next up, best villain in
- 33:00Speaker 2: a 2018 film. The nominees. That tells you the kind
- 33:05Speaker 2: of year we're having. The nominee, not the winner, Thanos.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:11Speaker 2: In any other year. I mean, arguably one of the
- 33:14Speaker 2: best villains and arguably not even the villain of that
- 33:17Speaker 2: movie is not only not the winner, it didn't really
- 33:22Speaker 2: get that many votes. Maybe because he's so much our
- 33:26Speaker 2: main character in that film and kind of our full-on
- 33:29Speaker 2: protagonist at times. But yeah, that was one of the
- 33:34Speaker 2: random nominees. I thought that said a lot about this year.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Michael Myers. Still kind of coming through. People hit or miss.
- 33:43Speaker 6: That was the winner?
- 33:43Speaker 2: No, no. That's just the fact that it's still getting votes.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Like this far in, any new Michael Myers movie, people
- 33:50Speaker 2: are still like, nope, he still works for me. He's
- 33:52Speaker 2: still a thing. Again, another random choice. Michael Gaston in
- 33:59Speaker 2: First Reformed. So we kind of counterbalance it. We got
- 34:05Speaker 2: weird creepy priest movies and superhero movies.
- 34:08Speaker 5: It's all good.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Along those lines, Erik Killmonger in Black Panther. Again, in
- 34:15Speaker 2: a year with Killmonger, I mean, it's Marvel fixing their
- 34:20Speaker 2: villain problem. You know, the fact that this past year
- 34:23Speaker 2: we had both of those in the same year when
- 34:26Speaker 2: they'd had some pretty weak villains going on. But yeah,
- 34:30Speaker 2: they fixed that problem. And yet still, you can't compete.
- 34:34Speaker 2: And the winner is, as one voter put it, that
- 34:37Speaker 2: crazy guy in Mandy. Which is Jeremiah Sand, played by
- 34:43Speaker 2: Linus Roche. People love Mandy.
- 34:47Speaker 6: I have not seen Mandy.
- 34:49Speaker 5: It's a pretty great villain.
- 34:51Speaker 6: I feel like I need to.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and we've had it thrown out that we need
- 34:54Speaker 2: to do... In fact, several people have suggested we need
- 34:57Speaker 2: to do an episode.
- 34:58Speaker 5: That shit needs to play on rotation in theaters every year.
- 35:00Speaker 2: That hit played so well.
- 35:03Speaker 6: Whenever you say freak out scene.
- 35:05Speaker 5: In the bathroom.
- 35:07Speaker 6: And this person behind me vomited.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Well, also, here's our comment for this one. Jeremiah Sand,
- 35:14Speaker 2: the cult leader guy in Mandy, making people listen to
- 35:17Speaker 2: his crappy music like that dastardly. So that tells you
- 35:21Speaker 2: it's kind of bastard that we're dealing with here that
- 35:24Speaker 2: wins best villain. Next up, best monster in a 2018 film.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Every year we get people thinking they're real clever, voting
- 35:35Speaker 2: for things that aren't really monsters, but they, well, that's
- 35:38Speaker 2: a monster. The racist white lady in Black Klansman. Yeah,
- 35:43Speaker 2: all right. She's a horrible person. I get it. She's
- 35:45Speaker 2: not going to win. Dick Cheney from Vice. Yeah, I
- 35:49Speaker 2: see what you're doing there.
- 35:50Speaker 5: There are prosthetics involved on that one, so maybe we can.
- 35:56Speaker 2: A certain president from Fahrenheit 11.9 got a vote or two.
- 36:00Speaker 2: But those aren't the nominees. You guys think you're real cute.
- 36:04Speaker 2: I get it.
- 36:07Speaker 5: Dick Taney's just a giant Stan Winston creation.
- 36:10Speaker 2: He's a puppet. Somewhere there's somebody working his arms right now.
- 36:16Speaker 2: So the nominees are The Kaiju from Pacific Rim Uprising.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Like the movie or not, Kaiju, that's a monster. That
- 36:23Speaker 2: is a monster. That is a monster. give you that
- 36:27Speaker 2: next up venom obviously from the favorite i just thought
- 36:33Speaker 2: it was stupid to put venom from venom so i
- 36:35Speaker 2: yeah take take a wild guess what movie he's from
- 36:38Speaker 2: i liked inserting him into the favorite helena marcos which
- 36:44Speaker 2: i believe is tilda swinton from uh suspiria maybe one
- 36:48Speaker 2: of her many roles yeah who.
- 36:51Speaker 5: Knows unofficially five other people.
- 36:52Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Again, in a year where this came out, the fact
- 36:58Speaker 2: that it's not the winner, the monsters from A Quiet Place,
- 37:01Speaker 2: those are pretty cool. So the fact that, again, a
- 37:07Speaker 2: lot of votes coming in. You can't compete with Skull
- 37:11Speaker 2: Bear Pig from Annihilation. Oh, shit.
- 37:14Speaker 5: Why didn't I?
- 37:15Speaker 2: That should have been my vote. Again, the comment is
- 37:19Speaker 2: maybe the scariest scene this year. I just like that
- 37:24Speaker 2: that's how it was billed by someone. It was also
- 37:27Speaker 2: called Death Voice Bear. Or just The Bear from Annihilation.
- 37:34Speaker 5: It's just something about a giant animal whose skin is
- 37:39Speaker 5: rotting off. And Bean is weird.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Again, not to spoil anything, but there's some weirdness going
- 37:47Speaker 2: on with that bear. Yeah.
- 37:49Speaker 5: Yeah, it's some other things. Yeah, for sure.
- 37:52Speaker 2: It's pretty badass.
- 37:53Speaker 6: It's pretty.
- 37:56Speaker 9: Badass.
- 38:22Speaker 6: The Academy Award for the best coffee in a gift
- 38:25Speaker 6: bag goes to.
- 38:27Speaker 2: It's Honey Brothers. Because... Of the few good things that
- 38:31Speaker 2: have happened in life ever, we're now sponsored by Heine
- 38:34Speaker 2: Brothers Coffee. Oh, my God.
- 38:35Speaker 8: Thank God, because I am sponsored by Heine Brothers Coffee
- 38:38Speaker 8: in general.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Well, we all should be, because Heine Brothers is awesome. Actually,
- 38:41Speaker 2: it really is. I'm drinking Heine Brothers Coffee right now.

- 39:54Speaker 3: Once a year on a spring evening, Hollywood expresses its
- 39:57Speaker 3: love for itself in the form of a statuette.
- 40:01Speaker 7: The Foilers!
- 40:02Speaker 3: It costs $ 250, but can be worth millions in fame, prestige,
- 40:07Speaker 3: and hard cash at the box office. It is awarded
- 40:11Speaker 3: by a tough jury, one's colleagues and competitors. Many factors
- 40:15Speaker 3: can sway their decisions. Emotion, popularity, high-pressure publicity, and most important,
- 40:22Speaker 3: recognition of outstanding achievement. But whatever the reason, this faceless
- 40:28Speaker 3: figure is a goal of all who work in motion.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Don't you guys like horror?
- 40:42Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Don't you think everybody should join the Meltketeer Horror Club?
- 40:47Speaker 3: Yes.
- 40:47Speaker 2: I think you should go to MovieMeltdown.com right now and
- 40:51Speaker 2: just click on the Patreon link and join up. And

- 41:00Speaker 2: try to keep it so everybody can join in. So
- 41:03Speaker 2: you can throw more money at us if you want.
- 41:05Speaker 2: But mostly, as long as you kick in a couple
- 41:09Speaker 2: of bucks, you can always listen to to the horror
- 41:11Speaker 2: episodes and experience the horror with us. So join the
- 41:17Speaker 2: club now.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:18Speaker 5: Don't you want to be cool? Yeah.
- 41:20Speaker 2: I mean, really don't you want to be cool? All
- 41:22Speaker 2: the cool kids are doing it.
- 41:24Speaker 7: Okay.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Wait, just by being a movie geek, you're already not
- 41:27Speaker 2: a cool kid and neither are we. So all the
- 41:30Speaker 2: geeks are doing it. Join the club now. Cool is
- 41:34Speaker 2: a relative term anyway. Certainly is today. So yeah, get
- 41:40Speaker 2: on board. Join right now and you can partake in
- 41:43Speaker 2: that and all of our other ridiculous discussions about horror.
- 41:47Speaker 6: What is the minimum again? Two bucks.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Two dollars. Two dollars. Two dollars. That's all you need
- 41:53Speaker 2: to listen to the episodes. So, I mean, it kind
- 41:56Speaker 2: of keeps us alive. I was discussing the horrible situation
- 42:01Speaker 2: it's been to try to keep things going earlier to
- 42:03Speaker 2: these poor bastards. Like, yeah, it's not just like, hey,
- 42:08Speaker 2: I'm rich and I want your money anyway. It's, It
- 42:10Speaker 2: really does keep the show going to the level that
- 42:13Speaker 2: people don't realize. It's kind of the only way it's
- 42:16Speaker 2: survived this last year and a half or so since
- 42:18Speaker 2: we started this. Yeah. So it is not only greatly appreciated,
- 42:24Speaker 2: but it gives us kind of a good way to
- 42:27Speaker 2: come up with something specific to put out there just
- 42:30Speaker 2: for these people that we don't. no actually care enough
- 42:33Speaker 2: to kick in.
- 42:34Speaker 6: So you get a lot of great stuff for that too.
- 42:36Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. I like, I like being able
- 42:38Speaker 2: to craft something for a very special group. So you
- 42:41Speaker 2: guys are super cool. And then you get these awesome episodes.
- 42:44Speaker 2: So one more reason, go join up now. So go
- 42:48Speaker 2: to our Patreon page, join the meltdown club, become a
- 42:51Speaker 2: milk a tear. You get cool stuff and you can
- 42:54Speaker 2: help us keep the meltdown rolling. Damn the man, save
- 42:58Speaker 2: the meltdown.
- 43:00Speaker 6: All right, this is Louis Gossett Jr.
- 43:08Speaker 2: This is Movie Meltdown.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Hey!
- 43:12Speaker 9: One man, one goal One mission, one heart, one soul.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Even in lives that are filled with fame and riches,
- 43:41Speaker 3: this is a moment to be cherished. For an entire
- 43:45Speaker 3: industry has said, this year, you are the best.
- 44:30Speaker 2: We're well into the ceremony. I guess you'd probably assume
- 44:33Speaker 2: now it's time for the dead people montage. Oh, but no,
- 44:37Speaker 2: because we already did that. So if, if you need that,
- 44:39Speaker 2: if you're one of those people that needs to look
- 44:41Speaker 2: back and go, Oh, just go back to episode four 72.
- 44:46Speaker 2: It's entitled straight dead talk. And we have a loving
- 44:49Speaker 2: tribute to several people that passed away last year. Several,
- 44:53Speaker 2: which also happened to be on the show. So not
- 44:56Speaker 2: that day, not like while they were dying, like, previous
- 44:59Speaker 2: guest of the show that have passed on i feel like.
- 45:03Speaker 6: If we could make that happen though it'd be pretty
- 45:06Speaker 6: cool i think that would boost our ratings.
- 45:07Speaker 2: I mean if we could reanimate her some stuff and
- 45:10Speaker 2: like i feel like if it also turns out kind
- 45:13Speaker 2: of like they do there it won't go well but
- 45:16Speaker 2: still be cool we can get some photo ops pose
- 45:18Speaker 2: with them a few times before you know anyway.
- 45:21Speaker 6: I don't have any pictures of me with any dead
- 45:24Speaker 6: celebrities Other than standing on Elvis' grave. Apart from that, no.
- 45:28Speaker 2: Directly on it. Like, sir, get down, please.
- 45:32Speaker 5: Right there.
- 45:33Speaker 2: And wait, I believe I was there for that. Have
- 45:36Speaker 2: you been back since then?
- 45:37Speaker 5: Yes, yes I have.
- 45:38Speaker 2: I thought you had.
- 45:38Speaker 6: It's exactly the same.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I have not made it back again. He hasn't moved anywhere?
- 45:41Speaker 2: He hasn't gone anywhere?
- 45:42Speaker 6: No, I haven't gone anywhere. They are planning on remodeling
- 45:47Speaker 6: the entryway of the guest center because right now it
- 45:51Speaker 6: looks like a Las Vegas casino. lobby as it kind
- 45:55Speaker 6: of should as it should and uh apparently they're planning
- 45:58Speaker 6: on spending something crazy like 46 million dollars on that
- 46:02Speaker 6: or something i could have just made that number up
- 46:04Speaker 6: but more more monies than i have is.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Stop taking lisa marie's money she doesn't have much yeah
- 46:11Speaker 2: i hear she's not doing so great financially so stop
- 46:14Speaker 2: wasting it and give her some It was the jungle room, right?
- 46:18Speaker 2: That's the badass one.
- 46:19Speaker 5: That's the badass one.
- 46:20Speaker 2: That's the shag carpeting, beanbag chairs.
- 46:24Speaker 6: The rest of it is kind of just like an
- 46:28Speaker 6: old person's house. Because every room looks like that room
- 46:33Speaker 6: in your grandma's house you're not allowed to go into.
- 46:35Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 46:35Speaker 2: With vinyl on the couch.
- 46:36Speaker 6: Yeah, with the really expensive but really dated furniture. Then
- 46:41Speaker 6: you go in the jungle room where there's the green
- 46:44Speaker 6: shag carpeting on the ceiling and walls and stuff. waterfall
- 46:48Speaker 6: and it's fantastic.
- 46:49Speaker 2: That was a fun road trip so i'm glad we
- 46:52Speaker 2: shared in that experience ben we can go next time
- 46:54Speaker 2: i'm always up for road trips so plus then we
- 46:59Speaker 2: could do like episodes we could just sit there and
- 47:01Speaker 2: talk about weird elvis movies which we'd have no shortage
- 47:04Speaker 2: of so no all right back to the action literally
- 47:09Speaker 2: best action sequence in a 2018 film the bathtub scene
- 47:14Speaker 2: and or the, we had several votes for this movie,
- 47:17Speaker 2: the bridge scene from the beginning in A Quiet Place. Again,
- 47:22Speaker 2: more tension than action in some of the moments, but
- 47:26Speaker 2: those are some pretty effective scenes, both of them, so
- 47:29Speaker 2: I will give you worth a nominee. The, again, X-Force
- 47:34Speaker 2: jumping out of the plane in Deadpool 2. Again, I'm
- 47:37Speaker 2: not sure if that's action exactly. It's entertaining. But, It's
- 47:43Speaker 2: a different kind of action. The canyon chase scene in Revenge,
- 47:48Speaker 2: which the more I keep watching that trailer now, I
- 47:51Speaker 2: wish it was on a service that I already had
- 47:53Speaker 2: because I haven't gotten around to it yet. But Revenge
- 47:56Speaker 2: looks pretty badass.
- 47:57Speaker 5: Oh, it's so good. It's on Shudder and Voodoo, I think,
- 48:01Speaker 5: are the two.
- 48:02Speaker 2: They should give me it.
- 48:03Speaker 5: It's like six bucks on Blu-ray.
- 48:05Speaker 2: I don't have that kind of cash.
- 48:09Speaker 7: Anyway.
- 48:11Speaker 2: This one I thought had it. They kept coming in,
- 48:14Speaker 2: but it didn't quite, by the end, it didn't make
- 48:17Speaker 2: it through, but rightfully needed the nominations because the helicopter
- 48:22Speaker 2: chase from Mission Impossible Fallout, as one person put it,
- 48:26Speaker 2: Tom Cruise is a problematic individual, but the man does
- 48:29Speaker 2: make a good action flick. Can't argue. I mean, as
- 48:33Speaker 2: much as he's a weird dude, as we've stated, there's
- 48:36Speaker 2: a lot of weird dudes in Hollywood, but I keep
- 48:39Speaker 2: watching those Mission Impossible movies, and every time I'm like,
- 48:42Speaker 2: damn it, this is really good for that kind of movie.
- 48:45Speaker 2: It's so entertaining. The action scenes are ridiculous. He's going
- 48:49Speaker 2: to kill himself eventually. Every time he does one of those,
- 48:53Speaker 2: he has to be like, now how can I one-up
- 48:55Speaker 2: it from last time? I jumped out of a plane
- 48:59Speaker 2: without a parachute. Oh, no, wait, that was a different one.
- 49:02Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't know. It is very entertaining. The
- 49:06Speaker 2: links that he will go to to one up himself
- 49:08Speaker 2: every dumb Mission Impossible movie. So dumb or not, they
- 49:12Speaker 2: are quite entertaining and good action movies. So still not
- 49:16Speaker 2: enough to again, it's this kind of year. the winner
- 49:20Speaker 2: is the entire third act of the Avengers and I'm
- 49:23Speaker 2: like you know I can't I can't you know any
- 49:26Speaker 2: other year Mission Impossible probably should have gotten it but
- 49:29Speaker 2: that whole like pretty much from the halfway point or
- 49:33Speaker 2: all of it I mean shit I love that first
- 49:35Speaker 2: fight scene when they first like the other guys land
- 49:39Speaker 2: on earth that's amazing the whole like star lord iron
- 49:43Speaker 2: man like fight scene in the middle is amazing like
- 49:47Speaker 2: arguably as good as the finale so again it's the
- 49:53Speaker 2: avengers like you can't fight the right all right so
- 49:59Speaker 2: speaking of problematic categories this one had to already be
- 50:02Speaker 2: readjusted because in the world we live in it would
- 50:07Speaker 2: not be really PC'd. It'd be like the hottest actress
- 50:12Speaker 2: or actor. So we would never want to do something
- 50:16Speaker 2: like that. That's not our style. So what if we
- 50:19Speaker 2: make it really wordy? Performer that you feel is aesthetically
- 50:23Speaker 2: pleasing while also having an amazing charisma that you are
- 50:27Speaker 2: inexplicably drawn to, but if you were ever in their
- 50:30Speaker 2: presence in the real world, you would be completely respectable
- 50:33Speaker 2: and not at all creepy toward them in a 2018 film. Yeah, there, see,
- 50:37Speaker 2: that covers all our races. So, I've given everyone free
- 50:42Speaker 2: reign to vote for whoever they want. It is interesting,
- 50:44Speaker 2: sometimes without that prompting, they vote for the side of
- 50:48Speaker 2: the dividing line I didn't think they were going to
- 50:50Speaker 2: vote for. So, more power to you. So, I just
- 50:52Speaker 2: divided them up as the boy type person and girl
- 50:54Speaker 2: type person. The first one in the boys is, and
- 50:59Speaker 2: I do like the phrasing, Ryan Reynolds, but only as Deadpool. Okay.
- 51:04Speaker 2: I don't want him any other way.
- 51:07Speaker 5: Strict proviso at the end there.
- 51:08Speaker 2: I like him looking like burnt chicken. Or with the
- 51:12Speaker 2: mask on. I don't want to have to look at
- 51:13Speaker 2: his pretty face. No thank you. Adam Driver. I'm assuming
- 51:19Speaker 2: Black Klansman. He's pretty damn good in Black Klansman, if
- 51:22Speaker 2: you haven't seen. This one, I mean, I saw it coming.
- 51:26Speaker 2: I assumed he was coming into this category. The phrasing
- 51:30Speaker 2: makes me a little uncomfortable. Hmm. This is literally how
- 51:33Speaker 2: they put it on the card. Jason, so wet Momoa.
- 51:42Speaker 2: I don't know what to do with it. Which way
- 51:45Speaker 2: are we to take that? No, I don't want to
- 51:47Speaker 2: go down that road.
- 51:48Speaker 5: He's Aquaman, of course.
- 51:50Speaker 2: That's one way? We'll go with that way.
- 51:53Speaker 5: That's the only... Of course that's what they mean.
- 51:55Speaker 2: He's wet because he's Aquaman. He's in the ocean the
- 51:58Speaker 2: whole damn movie.
- 52:00Speaker 6: Aquas right there in.
- 52:01Speaker 2: The That's what we're going with. Jason Momoa.
- 52:08Speaker 9: So wet.
- 52:08Speaker 6: I don't think I'm going to be able to refer
- 52:10Speaker 6: to him in any other way from now on.
- 52:13Speaker 2: You're welcome. This show has enriched your life.
- 52:18Speaker 6: He could play the Human Torch, which is the opposite
- 52:21Speaker 6: of being so wet, but he will still always be
- 52:23Speaker 6: so wet.
- 52:24Speaker 2: Jason So Wet Human Torch Momoa. Nice.
- 52:30Speaker 3: Again.
- 52:31Speaker 2: A year or two ago, I wouldn't have believed you
- 52:33Speaker 2: had he ended up in this category. But this year
- 52:35Speaker 2: has been quite a year for him. And I will
- 52:38Speaker 2: mess up his name. Is it Rami Malek?
- 52:42Speaker 6: I believe.
- 52:44Speaker 5: I believe so.
- 52:45Speaker 6: Again, he can come on the show and he can
- 52:46Speaker 6: let us know.
- 52:47Speaker 2: He should clarify when he comes on the show. Again,
- 52:49Speaker 2: your seat's right over there, dude. What are you doing?
- 52:51Speaker 2: Get over here. But again, the weird guy from the
- 52:55Speaker 2: robot show, I would have been surprised had that popped up.
- 53:00Speaker 2: when you're being like the most awesome rock star ever
- 53:04Speaker 2: that everyone kind of thought was sexy, even though he
- 53:06Speaker 2: was a weird dude too, like it all worked. Like,
- 53:10Speaker 2: you know, it's like something weird about Freddie Mercury that just,
- 53:14Speaker 2: he's so alluring. Right, right. Because again, if you broke
- 53:17Speaker 2: it down, he was kind of a weird looking guy.
- 53:19Speaker 2: He's a weird looking guy. He has big teeth. There's
- 53:21Speaker 2: something about his, yeah, his charisma is just like overpowering
- 53:25Speaker 2: to the point of like, Nope, he's hot.
- 53:27Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 53:28Speaker 2: I can't fight it. Again, the fact that you have
- 53:30Speaker 2: to step into those shoes, that's a hard role for
- 53:33Speaker 2: this dude.
- 53:34Speaker 6: Which maybe we need more people like that.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Hot, weird people.
- 53:38Speaker 5: That's what we're looking for.
- 53:40Speaker 2: I think we can hook you up. But the winner is, again,
- 53:46Speaker 2: can't argue, Michael B. Jordan. I like that the option
- 53:50Speaker 2: was Black Panther, Creed II. Take your pick.
- 53:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:54Speaker 2: He's hot in everything.
- 53:58Speaker 6: I saw somewhere, I don't remember if it was on
- 54:01Speaker 6: TV or what it was, but I saw someone refer
- 54:03Speaker 6: to him as the Michael Jordan of basketball of acting.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Sorry, I was distracted in the middle. I thought you
- 54:14Speaker 2: were going to say Michael B. Sowet Jordan, which all
- 54:18Speaker 2: of a sudden maybe needs to be inserted in everyone's name.
- 54:22Speaker 5: Could be.
- 54:22Speaker 2: I feel like that's going to go badly. Yeah. Again,
- 54:25Speaker 2: for a category we're trying not to creep people out.
- 54:28Speaker 2: It's turned down that road. Oh, it's, yeah. But hey,
- 54:33Speaker 2: I mean, you know.
- 54:34Speaker 6: Well, we're not really what you'd call tactful people. I
- 54:36Speaker 6: don't know what you're talking about.
- 54:37Speaker 2: We're very classy. I'm wearing a tux. Thank you.
- 54:40Speaker 6: This is true.
- 54:42Speaker 2: A bacon tux. All right. So, dude is, I mean,
- 54:47Speaker 2: his whole look in Black Panther, specifically with the weird scarification,
- 54:52Speaker 2: kind of made him a little hotter. Like, I don't
- 54:54Speaker 2: know what's going on there, but I was just like, dude,
- 54:56Speaker 2: I get it. Like, Can't argue.
- 54:58Speaker 6: I will admit, not a fan of the haircut.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Yeah, the hair's not cool, but again, you look at him.
- 55:03Speaker 6: I also feel like that was a very 90s haircut
- 55:06Speaker 6: for that character, but.
- 55:08Speaker 2: Kind of thing. Black Panther might have had a big
- 55:10Speaker 2: surge in the 90s. Maybe they were trying to pull
- 55:12Speaker 2: in that 90s crowd of comic book fans.
- 55:15Speaker 6: But aside from that, he was very dreamy.
- 55:18Speaker 2: One, then watching, again, I saw Creed II not too
- 55:21Speaker 2: long ago, and the amount of shape he has to
- 55:24Speaker 2: get into for these roles... specifically when you're like because
- 55:28Speaker 2: when you're playing a boxer like that's one of those
- 55:30Speaker 2: things they do so many boxing movies but i'm like
- 55:33Speaker 2: so many guys in hollywood even when they're massively in
- 55:36Speaker 2: shape aren't boxer level shape like yeah there's a level
- 55:41Speaker 2: of no matter how cut you are and how pretty
- 55:43Speaker 2: you look like boxing will beat the life out like
- 55:47Speaker 2: they will just take your soul from you so like
- 55:51Speaker 2: there's a level so again like looking at the other
- 55:53Speaker 2: dude that he's Pitt it against him, Creed, too. It's
- 55:56Speaker 2: just like, that dude is just a wall. Like, he
- 55:59Speaker 2: is just a fighter. And so Michael B. Jordan, like,
- 56:02Speaker 2: has to be convincing for him to even step foot
- 56:05Speaker 2: in the ring there.
- 56:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 56:07Speaker 2: So it's... Yeah, it says something that he's, like, willing
- 56:11Speaker 2: to put that much work and effort into, you know,
- 56:14Speaker 2: just to be in these roles, specifically something like Creed, so...
- 56:19Speaker 2: All right. Girl type, people. We'll try to contain ourselves, but...
- 56:24Speaker 2: It's hard to do with Scarlett Johansson because she's here
- 56:27Speaker 2: kind of every year. I mean, Infinity War. I do
- 56:30Speaker 2: like that they let her change her look almost every movie.
- 56:33Speaker 2: She has a totally different look in Infinity War because
- 56:36Speaker 2: it's been a few years. The girl wants to change
- 56:38Speaker 2: her hair. What are you going to do? Matilda Lutz
- 56:41Speaker 2: for Revenge. Again, an odd movie for a hot recommendation,
- 56:45Speaker 2: but they're coming in. What are you going to do?
- 56:48Speaker 2: She's an attractive gal. This one, again... Before this movie,
- 56:53Speaker 2: I might have argued it. I'm totally on board having
- 56:57Speaker 2: just seen A Star is Born, Lady Gaga. Have you seen?
- 57:01Speaker 2: Have either of you seen it? It sells me in
- 57:05Speaker 2: a way that I didn't think I was ever going to.
- 57:08Speaker 2: I think because I'm so used to her being way
- 57:12Speaker 2: over the top and kind of ridiculous and overdoing costumes
- 57:17Speaker 2: and even her persona on stage and in videos and
- 57:21Speaker 2: everything is like dialed to 11. So the fact that
- 57:24Speaker 2: we get such a normal version of her in this
- 57:27Speaker 2: movie is like kind of amazing. And like, I sort
- 57:33Speaker 2: of got on board. I was like, Oh, okay. Now
- 57:34Speaker 2: I see why not only like, would anybody, you know,
- 57:38Speaker 2: be on board with this, but specifically why this guy
- 57:41Speaker 2: sees her and immediately like, legitimately you feel a connection
- 57:45Speaker 2: between those two like it is a better movie than
- 57:47Speaker 2: you would expect that.
- 57:48Speaker 5: To be yeah um i haven't seen it yet but
- 57:52Speaker 5: i do get the impression from like the trailers that
- 57:56Speaker 5: it's you can definitely like when you watch it like
- 57:58Speaker 5: oh like it's not gonna be like lady gaga is
- 58:01Speaker 5: like just shoved into this movie it's like oh it's
- 58:03Speaker 5: like that you know like they just they pare her
- 58:06Speaker 5: down to like a normal real person yeah like a
- 58:10Speaker 5: real person you know um you can definitely separate her
- 58:13Speaker 5: from that persona.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Which again i don't think i would have like even
- 58:17Speaker 2: like two years ago like i don't know if i
- 58:19Speaker 2: would have even bought that when they were trying to
- 58:20Speaker 2: sell it and even when they announced it i'm like
- 58:23Speaker 2: okay yeah she's the the level of rock star that
- 58:26Speaker 2: you need to sort of work the casting end of
- 58:28Speaker 2: it but like i don't know if it's going to
- 58:30Speaker 2: work on screen and surprisingly it works on screen. Like
- 58:35Speaker 2: in a way I did not see coming. She is
- 58:37Speaker 2: so real world likable and just, uh, again, almost this
- 58:42Speaker 2: girl next door level of attractiveness that I don't think
- 58:44Speaker 2: I've ever seen in her before because she's always in
- 58:47Speaker 2: a ridiculous costume and a meat suit or whatever the
- 58:49Speaker 2: hell she's wearing. And like, so seeing her as a
- 58:52Speaker 2: real person is kind of refreshing. I gotta say, I
- 58:56Speaker 2: was surprised by that. All right. This next, um, This
- 59:03Speaker 2: next nominee, I think you'll recognize the, again, no names,
- 59:07Speaker 2: but you'll probably recognize. the nominator. There's nothing wrong with
- 59:13Speaker 2: thinking that SheVenom is hot. There's nothing wrong with having
- 59:15Speaker 2: a sketchbook full of SheVenom drawings. There's nothing wrong with
- 59:19Speaker 2: working on a SheVenom fan fiction where she thinks I'm
- 59:22Speaker 2: super cool and we talk on the phone until three
- 59:24Speaker 2: in the morning. There's nothing wrong with it. So I
- 59:28Speaker 2: suppose She-Venom is the nominee after all that.
- 59:32Speaker 5: She-Venom.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Again, this is our people. People who dream about She-Venom.
- 59:40Speaker 2: These are the milketeers.
- 59:44Speaker 5: I think we found our Oscars host.
- 59:46Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. But the winner is, and I'm right there
- 59:51Speaker 2: with you. I watched the movie and went, who the
- 59:54Speaker 2: hell is that? Zazie Beetz. from that would be domino
- 59:59Speaker 2: in deadpool 2 huh i again that was my takeaway
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: from that movie like i didn't i don't i don't
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: think there's anything wrong with either deadpool movie but they
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: don't like blow me away i'm not like a massive
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: you know putting everything in my house is nothing but
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: deadpool memorabilia now like they're fine like they're fun but
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: that was watching deadpool 2 like there's a lot of
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: fun moments in it but the whole time i'm just
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: like where did she come from like this is like
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: all the other people just fall to the wayside no
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: really But by the end, you spend so much time
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: with Domino that I'm like, this chick is awesome. So now, again,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: I didn't know. She's in Atlanta. She has this whole
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: career that I hadn't been paying attention to. But after Domino,
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: I'm like, nope, on board. Zazie beats.
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: Yeah, she's in the new Soderbergh basketball movie.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: And she was really good.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: She seems pretty solid overall. acting-wise, so I do want
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: to see where she turns up next. Again, I already
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: wanted to get around to Atlanta. That just pushes it
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: up a little more. I still don't have time to
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: watch it. I don't have time for any shows.
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: Too many shows.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: I don't have time for any shows. It's not your fault.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: It's not your fault, Childish Gambino. I want to watch
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: your show. I want to watch it. Alright, next up,
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: the 2018 movie you expected to hate but ended up enjoying...
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: The return to this specific movie because it came up
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: and we had opposite ends of the scale here. So
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: this is the first one, this minority opinion. The comment is,
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: the Predator, believe in the power of splosions. Now, in
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: a minute, we're going to have someone on the other
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: end of that scale. But for now, the Predator. But still,
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: not even official. The actual nominees for this movie.
- 1:01:52Speaker 6: What category was this again?
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: This is the movies you expected to hate but ended
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: up enjoying. Aquaman probably needs to be on there. People
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: seem to like it. I heard that from a lot
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: of people. I also heard that a lot about The Meg.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Everybody assumed it was going to be dumb and it's
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: entertainingly dumb. I concur.
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: I rented that movie thinking it was going to be
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: just like like not good and uh it was it
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: was solid as hell like it was maybe my favorite
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: like just like shark attack movie since deep blue sea
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: deep blue sea yeah i mean like yeah literally like
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: that was the last one that i can like remember
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: like enjoying well did.
- 1:02:34Speaker 6: You see the guy who who directed green room is
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: doing a a big giant shark movie I think it
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: was Green Room.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: The Room?
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: Oh, Green Room.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: I think it's The Room. No, I get what you're saying. Again,
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: I'm like, he's so weird. Until it happens, I don't
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: know that I'm buying. It could just be a weird
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: story that came out. I'm sure I will want to
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: see it.
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: We've seen shark movies before. We've seen dumb shark movies before.
- 1:03:08Speaker 6: We've never really seen a big, dumb, crazy-ass shark movie.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: And we don't, I mean, nothing really, nothing movie-wise is
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: on the same level as The Room. So, like, trying
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: to work that thing into other movies, I don't know.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: I don't know what to do with it. So, we'll
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: see if it happens. And we'll probably do an episode
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: on it. Next up, and again, I heard this from
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: a lot of people, blockers. I heard a lot. I mean, again,
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: I think it's pretty gross-out comedy, but I think people
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: were expecting the worst, and there's some pretty solid stuff
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: in there as dumb comedies go. Solo, again, I feel
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: like there was a lot of weight on that one
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: coming in. But the winner is, and again, by a
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: good margin, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse. I was very... impressed with.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: The person that wrote in said, I'm a fan, so
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: I'm glad they didn't mess it up. I wasn't even like,
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: I mean, again, I'm a big Spider-Man. I mean, everybody's
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: seen Spider-Man in normal, different ways over the years. I
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: remember a ton of the cartoon stuff over the years. Obviously,
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: all the movies. I had a few of the comics,
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: but I wasn't steeped in the comics. So I don't
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: think I brought that much comic baggage to it, which
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: Once you get into the Spider-Verse stuff, there's a lot
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: to unpack in the comics end of it. So the
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: fact that they kind of draw from all that stuff
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: in the comics, but they don't adhere to it so
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: much so that they're forced to do exactly what a
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: specific comic book says. But in doing their own thing,
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: they also don't step on the toes of what everybody
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: loved about the comics. So it kind of takes... the
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: best of everything and rolls it into what is also
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: a genuinely good movie. So I think it, yeah, I
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: think it caught people off guard that they expected it
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: to be another hacky, especially because it's animated and sometimes
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: they'll slap anything together animated just because they know animated
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: stuff makes money. But yeah, this one was actually surprisingly
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: well done. This is one of my favorite categories and
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: I didn't even come up with it. It was a
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: listener request. Many years ago suggested this as a category.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: It seems very fitting for our mood on this show.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: The dreariest study of the human condition in a 2018 film.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: And here's, again, not even a nominee. This just came
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: in as one of the comments to counterbalance the splosions comment,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: I guess. The Predator. This thing was a paint-by-numbers exercise
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: in moviemaking and did the inexcusable for an action, horror, suspense,
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: whatever film. It was boring. Anytime you can tell from
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: just about the first 15 minutes of the movie who's
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: going to survive at the end and who's not going
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: to make it, it's going to be dull. You can
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: pretty much determine the order they're going to bite it in.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: It goes on excessively. I didn't have that much of
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: a problem with it, but it really seemed like it
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: rubbed people the wrong way.
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: I feel like, okay, so we're going by the standards
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: of the Predator movies. It can't be any worse than
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: the sequel.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: I was going to say, the bar is not really high.
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: At the very least, it has to be like... better
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: than everything after the first movie.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: I mean, that's what I was going to say.
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: But you know how people put attachments to things.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: And romanticize things from when I was a kid. This
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: was the most awesome movie ever, Predator.
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: It's like, you can't get your childhood back, dude. I
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: think it's about more than just the Predator.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: I feel like that's a little of it.
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: No, you're right.
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: It was like an underwhelming episode recently. I was like,
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: to me, if you're a 12-year-old kid, this movie works
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: across the board. Again, As we said in the previous category, explosions.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: There's explosions, there's violence, there's stupid things going on and
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: dumb characters. Everything going on is a lot of big
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: dumb action. If that's all you're looking for in a
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: big dumb action movie, then it delivers. Again, it is
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: dealing with the baggage of being in the Predator franchise,
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: but I'm like... it's also predator.
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: And by the time we get like at the, and
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: no spoilers, but there's like a super sized predator in it.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: I'm like, how awesome is that? Like, if you like predator,
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: this is a big predator. It's that level of ridiculous.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: I'm like, if you're okay with the dumb predator, like
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: giant story that it's become over the years, I'm like,
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: I don't know. This is just as ridiculous. Just go
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: with it. Or don't, and a lot of people didn't.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I also like this one. Again,
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: it didn't even make it to the nominees, but of
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: all the things to come up, First Man. After the
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: awesome first scene of First Man, we are punished with
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: quiet scenes of an angelic little girl getting sick and
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: dying of cancer. Why do you hate me, movie? I
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: don't know who came up with that.
- 1:08:24Speaker 7: My boy.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: I should just give this listener a writing credit at
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: this point.
- 1:08:28Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: So, the actual nominees for the dreariest study of the
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: human condition. Again, this one, it got many votes. I'm like,
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: all right, I'm not going to argue with you. Fahrenheit 11.9.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: This one, no joke, if you haven't seen it, for
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: the kind of dorks that we are and listen to
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: this show. Eighth grade is amazing.
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: Like it's it's great it's so well it hits the
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: nail on the on the just so many heads.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: So even even the person who nominates it is like
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: eighth grade and at the same time the most uplifting
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: movie of the year like it works on so many
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: levels and like kind of gets it because so many
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: people try to tell stories about kids and like it's
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: just some middle-aged white guy making it and they miss
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: the mark massively if it's amazing that this is made
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: by a grown-up because it like and a grown-up who
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: probably didn't experience this life because it's immersed in a
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: kid growing up in school now which we just on
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: a recent episode we're talking about like how different it
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: is to be even like a grade schooler now like
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: it's the same weird dynamic that we grew up with
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: kind of but when you add the massive amounts of
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: technology in there now the fact that not just the
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: constant like phone stuff and the instagrams and whatever but
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: like when you're also trying to create your identity and
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: it is all based around being online like it's how
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: you present yourself online it's what you're doing with your
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: youtube channel like it's it's a weird thing that we
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: didn't grow up with right like The fact that this
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: movie captures so much of that is, yeah. So it
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: doesn't take many prizes this year, but it should. So
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: I'm just glad when it got the nominations that it did.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: So dreary and yet uplifting is what we're taking from this.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: Next up is Hereditary. Because again, it's, yeah. Not the winner,
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: but yet it needs to be here. As does Mandy,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: our next nominee. Both of them make a lot of
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: appearances on this episode. But, the winner is Annihilation. And
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: I do like the comment, by the end, this person says,
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: we're not ready to meet aliens. Like, that's really the
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: takeaway from most sci-fi movies, but they sort of, again,
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: hitting the nail on the head. Annihilation, like, it's a
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: weird take. It seems like it shouldn't work. And I
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: think for a lot of people it doesn't, because it's
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: not like a dumb action movie, like they may have, again,
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: naming it Annihilation probably threw people off, but For being
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: smart science fiction, it's a little smarter than you would
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: even expect it to be by the end. You get
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: midway in and you're not really sure where it's going
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: to go. By the end, it's like, oh, okay, yeah, yep,
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: you got a point. This is good science fiction. So,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: now we get to the music. And this is how
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: we differ. I thought it was always unfair when they
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: would disqualify people for some weird technicality, which always seems
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: to happen in the music.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: That's so silly.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: I throw the rules out.
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: You think they would just be like, okay, this is
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: getting ridiculous.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: I'm like, favorite use of a song in a 2018 movie, period.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: Does not have to be originally created for the film.
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: And in fact, most of the time when we get nominations,
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: it's from like older songs. So it is, to me,
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: there is an artwork to taking recognizable songs and then
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: sort of weaving them into your film and making it
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: Like finding some new level between the song itself and
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: whatever this movie is that you're creating. So, yeah. I
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: don't know if that's what we get with these, but
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: here are our nominees. Another one bites the dust in
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Bohemian Rhapsody. That's the one that you actually hear. They say,
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: we saw the construction of the song and it revealed
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: character from all the band members in the process. And
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: we heard the whole thing. He was upset that they
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: kept cutting off songs. We're listening to arguably one of
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: the greatest bands in the world and they keep playing
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: little snippets of songs. You know we are here for
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: a movie about this band. It's okay to play their music.
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: This one I liked because I have a weird attachment
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: to this artist and it's from 8th grade. It's Orinoco
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Flo from Enya. oh yeah it's a weird thing to
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: work into that story and again i i remember chasing
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: people out of the video store with inya and i
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: have a a weird soft spot in my heart with
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: her because that became our closing theme we had it
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: was like a five song like ep slash videotape like
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: they took like i guess the only video she had
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: at that time and put it on a vhs And
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: every night when it was about 15 minutes to close,
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: we'd put it in. Everyone would leave. And I don't
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: mean that in a bad way, but it worked. I
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: think it's just because it makes you sleepy. And everybody's
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: just like, man, I need to go home. Thank you, Inya.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: And so, like, yeah, ever since then, like, there's just
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: a warm spot in my heart for Inya. This one, again,
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: I like when we cross over with the actual performers.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: This is I Will Go to War. by tessa thompson
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: who is in creed 2 and if you've seen creed
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: 2 she performs it within the context it's the walkout
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: music for adonis creed when he comes out to be
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: a badass for the fight and she's there performing it
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: with him so that's that's one of those sort of
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: awakenings in the last year or two for me is
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: like i don't think i knew who tessa thompson was
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: before about two years ago And now she's in so
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: many things, and I am never let down. She is
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: such a solid actress. So, yeah, Tessa Thompson, I'm on board.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: All right, we have another special nominee. Again, I can't argue.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: This is a great nomination. I don't know the song,
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: but Fred Rogers singing to the Little Wheelchair Kid in
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: Won't You Be My Neighbor... destroyed me. So much so
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: that all I could do was laugh and sob like
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: a man having a complete nervous breakdown in the middle
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: of a Sunday matinee show filled with senior citizens. I
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: never want to feel all that much at once ever again. Never, ever, ever,
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: ever again. You hear me? Writing credit, I'm telling you.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: If I had a check, I'd send it over to you.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: So yes, whatever that song is from What Would You
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: Be My Neighbor? but you can't most of the votes
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: that came in from this one album you can't fight
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: it the winner is Deadpool 2 we had a lot
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: of take your pick again that's how both the Deadpool
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: movies have gone it's just been a greatest hits usually
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: of the 80s so I personally was again sucker for
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: this level of cheesy music the fact that they actually
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: brought Celine Dion in to do an original song like
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: Ashes is pretty damn funny it's as serious as she
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: takes all of her music and yet it's completely ridiculous
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: and over the top so I guess like bonus points
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: to her for having that sense of humor to let
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: them poke foot at the fact that it's Celine Dion
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: but that's not the one that got all the votes
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: would you like to guess what got all the votes
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: what got all the votes it's from a film it's
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: from a previous film probably nominated back in its own
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: day for best songs at flash dance winner is nine
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: to five huh huh from our friend dolly part that
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: is a catchy song it is a great song so
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: i mean she just won a special lifetime achievement award
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: at the grammys like people love dolly parton so you
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: can't you can't fight can't fight it so Next up,
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: the favorite score in a 2018 film. And again, it
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: does not have to be specifically created for the film.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: Johnny Greenwood for You Were Never Really Here. Which, is
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: that good? I heard good things about the movie as
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: a whole, but.
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: It's great. Number one, because it's just.
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: Well, okay, it's like 85 minutes. It's just like it's
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: so brisk and to the point. It's one of those
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: movies where it's so good because all the bullshit is
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: trimmed away. Yeah. And it just only parts that matter.
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: So it's almost like when you watch it, it's kind
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: of this master class in editing. It gets rid of
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: so many unnecessary scenes, so it kind of becomes this like...
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: I don't know how to describe it. It's very dark.
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: It's another one that's been on my list that I
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: never get around to watching movies, sadly. All I do
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: is edit this nonsense. I was doing it this weekend.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: I'm like, but I have a movie sitting up there
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: I want to watch, but I have to get the
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: episode done.
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: It's a stupid show that I... It's probably walking Phoenix's.
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: I would say maybe his best role yet. If I,
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: I mean, I mean there's, you could pick a lot
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: of his stuff or at least several of his stuff
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: from like the last 20 years. But I feel like
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: this is like his most like human character and not
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: so much. Cause he's, He's known for going full method
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: and kind.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Of being like... He's a weird dude.
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: Like in The Master, but this is the first role
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: I feel like I've seen where I'm like, oh, he's
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: like a fully rounded human that I can sympathize with
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: and seems to be like someone you could talk to.
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: You'd be intimidated to talk to him on the street,
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: but at the same time, you would be able to
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: engage on some level, I guess.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Not since Space Camp has he been so endearing. I
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: love that movie I forgot I forgot he was in
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: it too well it's because he was Leaf that's he
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: snuck it in there you didn't know it was him
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: wow but um johnny greenwood's another one of those it's
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: oh he's funny how consistent now he is a go-to
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: yes almost every year he's gonna be there if not
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: getting an oscar nomination like delivering some of the most
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: like renowned scores being made these years.
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: And that score, especially as I feel like is really
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: good because it's, it's mostly like electronic or a lot
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: of it is electronic. I feel like, so it's like
- 1:19:15Speaker 5: Johnny Greenwood being Johnny Greenwood and kind of having these
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: like weird, like strings, but also there's like, just, there's
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: kind of like a, like a Trent Reznor, like element
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: to it as well. So it kind of makes for this, like, kind.
- 1:19:28Speaker 10: Of weird score like unofficial like yeah but um so
- 1:19:34Speaker 10: it's just i mean yeah it's a really great soundtrack
- 1:19:37Speaker 10: i would definitely buy it on vinyl if they were
- 1:19:40Speaker 10: around um.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: The next one i'm like yeah i guess and yet
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: it's kind of weird like of course and yet really
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: at the same time halloween specifically as someone put but
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: only for sentimental reasons like so i'm like do i
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: love that theme yes is the new version much different?
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: Not really.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: Like, does it even qualify for the Oscars? I'm guessing no.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: So luckily you get nominated for the boiler. So next
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: up again, we returned to Creed two specifically because as
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: they say, the workout soundtrack is back. They really like the, the,
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: the first Creed movie almost went out of its way
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: to like, not hit you over the head with the
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Rocky theme. Like it, it, it really wanted to be
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: its own movie and it did that. And there were
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: only touches of it when you were like, Oh my God,
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: they're playing it. You know, cause you know, it's Rocky movie.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: That's what you're there for. So when they work it in,
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: it's a big deal where by now, like they've already
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: established themselves. So when they, when you get to the
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: workout montage, they're just like, fuck it, let's do it.
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: It's just old school Rocky workout montage, only it's Creed. So, Yep,
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: it's pretty awesome.
- 1:20:51Speaker 6: Hey, it worked well six times before.
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: Well, four. The other ones have issues, but mostly five.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: All right, next up. Again, I like the phrasing on
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: this one. The nomination is, I like that annihilation score.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: I feel smart when I listen to it. I feel smart.
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: I love our listeners.
- 1:21:20Speaker 6: Well, this is either one of our listeners or someone
- 1:21:23Speaker 6: who stumbled upon this page.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: I'm going to write in some stuff.
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: But the winner is, and again, this one got a
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: good amount of votes, Mandy. Hands down is what this
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: one put.
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: Great score, too.
- 1:21:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: That was a good one.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: This is the year for Mandy. Yeah.
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: It's a good final score from... His name escapes me,
- 1:21:47Speaker 5: but it was the last movie he did before he died,
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: I think.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Nicolas Cage.
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: Yes, it was Nicolas Cage.
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: Also a composer. I'm lying. That's not true. All right,
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: we're coming to the big ones here. We've got... Next
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: up is director. Most impressive director of a 2018 film. Again,
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: in a different year. Can't argue... First up is the
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: Russo brothers. As this person put it, the sheer amount
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: of moving parts in this film seems like a nightmare
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: to even think about putting together, but they managed to
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: spread the story out where no one ever got shortchanged
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: and everything made sense. This thing could have been a
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: huge mess, but they kept it together. Great art, not
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: really that kind of movie. Impressive? Hell yeah. That is
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: an impressive feat in filmmaking, if nothing else. Again, I
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: was kind of caught off guard how many people voted
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: for John Krasinski. He's directed before, but like A Quiet
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: Place really sort of put him on the map. I
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: think people really started noticing, oh, he can do this too.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: So yeah, I think it was really well done. But yeah,
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: I think it kind of helped him make his name
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: as a director. So I think we'll probably see more
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: of him more often, I would think, especially now that
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: he's Jack Ryan. You've got Jack Ryan money rolling in.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: You can back your own side projects. This one, again,
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: surprised me because it only turned up like once or
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: twice in the entire voting, but enough that it got
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: nominated for Best Director, Wes Anderson, for Isle of Dogs.
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: You know what? I would concur. I would definitely agree
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: that that was one of the better directed.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, I keep saying it, but I'm like, that
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: is the most perfect situation for me. Like, he's such
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: a controlling director. You control everything in stop motion animation.
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: But it is stop motion, too. So it's like, you're
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: not directing actors. So it's like, are you, like, what
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: is your role?
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: I mean, it changes it.
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: It's very hermetically sealed, like all of his stuff. I
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: guess that's the impression I'm getting. Again, I'm like, it's
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: the most perfect art form for him.
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: Like, it is awesome. almost devoid of humanity but at
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: the same time being the most artistic thing you can
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: do like it fits all of his weird stuff that
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: he's into like and really he's he's getting a little
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: better at again that's what i've talked about lately like
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: these last two movies are turning me like i was
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: kind of somewhere in the middle i was always impressed
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: with him but i feel like there's such a disconnect
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: with humans and like in this movie that most of
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: the cast isn't human like you still kind of care
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: about these characters. Like it, he's getting the, this one
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: in the, the, the hotel, like the, both of those
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: are like finding characters and, and finding reasons to care
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: about characters that we didn't use to get from his movies.
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: I think he's kind of getting better and better as
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: a director. So I, again, I don't argue with him
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: being on here, but I just, I heard so little
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: about that movie this year. I was surprised they got
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: the nomination that did next up. I don't even know.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: Do they pronounce it?
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: Ari?
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: Ari Aster for Hereditary?
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: I guess.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: A-R-I.
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: I think it's Ari.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: I would go with Ari. Again, seats open.
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: Come on down.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: Your sign is in your chair right now waiting for you.
- 1:25:12Speaker 7: Come fight us.
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: I don't know what you're doing.
- 1:25:14Speaker 5: If he doesn't show up funny in the episode, then
- 1:25:17Speaker 5: it's official.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: I've got baloney sitting here with your name on it.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: I mean, come on. Of course I work baloney into these.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: Of course.
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: I would have been disappointed otherwise.
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: It's the classiest of all meats. It's obvious.
- 1:25:30Speaker 6: It's even right there in the name, Bologna.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Bologna can also be your response to that.
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: That was definitely like a director, like a director movie.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: As far as like compared to say like John Krasinski,
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: which he did a fine job, but at the same time, it's,
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: it's one of those, there's a distinct like visual and
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: like sense of things being placed.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: It's very particular.
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: And, I mean, it's almost more showy. And I don't
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: mean that in a bad way, really. Because A Quiet
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: Place is really well put together, but it's all about tension.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: It's all about playing with that balance of lack of sound.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: And then how do you use that to crank up
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: the tension? And how do you use the scenario? Whereas
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: Hereditary is like.
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: It's a little bit like Wes Anderson. It's kind of
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: the hermetically sealed kind of dollhouse sensibility. Literally.
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: At moments. But on top of that, it also is
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: all playing with mood and tone. Because it almost, again,
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: almost like the Wes Anderson thing, it's almost in its
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: own weird little world. Like it almost... Yeah, like you
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: get in there and it's like it doesn't feel like
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: your reality almost, but it still sucks you in. So
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: that's something if you can do that. Like that says
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: something about the director if you can make that work.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: Because I feel like if you were trying to do
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: that and you didn't have the skill, it would really
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: fall flat. And this one doesn't.
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: But the winner is for Best Director, Panos Kazimantos.
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: For Mandy. Again, I'm not surprised.
- 1:27:10Speaker 5: I'm happy with that.
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: It is the year of Mandy. Let's give it all to.
- 1:27:13Speaker 5: Mandy, really. It was the MVP of the year, I think.
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: Most people would... I will say that's the movie that,
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: at the end of the day, no matter what wins
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: at the Oscars, I feel like more people that I
- 1:27:25Speaker 5: talk to are like, I don't know, just in conversation,
- 1:27:29Speaker 5: will remember that movie and not whatever else. Whatever bullshit.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: Again, that's kind of what I.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: Keep coming back to this four. It's like it is
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: a ridiculous amount of orchestrating to get people to get
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: votes in and all of this. But I'm like, in
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: the end, I feel like... It's a reflection. Yeah, I
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: feel like it is like a snapshot on this year.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: And it's sort of an alternate version of, you know,
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: we have the Oscars and the Oscars do what they
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: do just fine. Like, it's entertaining. It's its own group
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: of movies. But I feel like there's something... that is
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: like there's an in-between spot that it's not like it's
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: not like it's nothing but splosion movies yes we welcome
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: the predators of the world but at the same time
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: i think by the time you know all the votes
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: get in you get a pretty good quality and you
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: start getting a mixture of like yes we get a
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: lot of horrific stuff in here but there's a lot
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: of art house too and i think it's a reflection
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: of stuff that doesn't always turn up in the mainstream
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: even to the level i mean The Oscars loves to
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: be artsy, but it's not Mandy artsy. like it doesn't
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: do her a Terry artsy like doesn't know how to
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: process it's it's it's.
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: Just amazing for what the kind of movie it is
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: it's all of a piece yeah which most movies last
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: year I weren't I don't feel like I mean even
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: the ones I liked that were like I would say
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: like of quality like they kind of wavered in spots
- 1:28:52Speaker 5: or they kind of felt bloated and Mandy was just
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: like it was like like the thing like it just
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: felt like a whole like solid It's preconceived into its form. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: Like a perfectly cut out diamond of a movie. Yeah.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: All right. Well, to balance it out with the mainstream,
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: because I do like to welcome the explosion movies. So
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: but I again, it's that's what I think is almost
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: annoying about the Oscars. And even they found it frustrating
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: because that's why they added all these other dumb. You know,
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: we're going to have 10 now. Now we're going to
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: have however many we feel like the Oscars cannot make
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: a decision to save their lives in the last decade.
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: But because they're trying to pit like the biggest money-making,
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: critically acclaimed audience, beloved movies against whatever weird little art
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: house movie is out there. And I'm like, that's kind
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: of not a fair fight. Like the other one has
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: a billion dollars worth of promotion. And of course, everybody's
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: going to vote for this one. While, you know, there's
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: weird little indie movies out there that are equally a solid,
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: equally need to be viewed by people, but they just
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: don't get that window. They don't get that. time for
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: people to find them so i like breaking it up
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: so and and i also liked leaving it up to
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: the voter to decide what fell on which side of
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: the scale which backfires on them sometimes so i put
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: it as favorite what you would consider mainstream movie of
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: 2018 and i do get questionable ones or people that
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: will be voting for the same thing but on two
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: different sides so like it might have won if everybody
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: would have gotten together and decided what kind of movie
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: it was But some people think it's still indie. I
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: don't know. It is a slippery slope these days. If
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: you come up with a million dollars, you're still an
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: indie movie. But I don't have a million dollars. That's
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: a hell of a feat right there. But again, you're
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: going up against $ 200 million movies. So it's a weird thing.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: So the nominees for mainstream are Deadpool 2, Creed 2.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: These are solid options. A quiet place, which, again, needs
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: to be there. I like the phrasing on this. Spider-Verse
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: all day, every day. Specifically, they go on to say,
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: before we get to the winner, just because Spider-Verse didn't win,
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: but it does need to have its moment in the sun.
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: I had high hopes for this film based on the trailers,
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: and it blew them out of the water. For me,
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: this was pound for pound the most enjoyable film I
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: saw this year. The animation style was something new, somehow
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: harkened back to the comic book style without ever coming
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: off as distracting. The story was original, but still paid
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: tribute to the comic foundation. While it had its darkish moments,
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: it wasn't grim dark dark grim, as the fashion of
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: the day seems to be.
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: DC.
- 1:31:42Speaker 6: DC.
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: The shot of Miles, the new Spider-Man leaping off the
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: skyscraper and then the camera turning upside down to make
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: it appear as if he's actually flying instead of falling.
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: That was just great cinematography. I love this movie. So again,
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: like this is the kind of thing that you're probably
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: not going to see Spider-Verse in the Oscars, but like
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: these are the ones that like the geeks find even
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: something as mainstream as that doesn't get like, you know,
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: doesn't get the praise that it probably deserves from regular people.
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: So I like kind of, showcasing these things along the
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: way as we go not the winner but you can't
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: be i mean it's mainstream movie of the year the
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: winner is avengers infinity war like i what am i
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: gonna argue i just re-watched it recently and i'm just
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: i'm still like enthralled midway in i'm like i know
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: how this goes and i'm still like some of those
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: scenes are just so damn good and some of the
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: performances along the way the fact that we're still getting
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: such a dynamic character out of Robert Downey Jr. A
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: decade in this many movies into this same guy. And
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: he's still interesting to me. Like they're still kind of
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: unpacking whatever weirdness is going on in that, in that
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: guy and that actor, like everything about it is still
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: in like, so with all of these other aspects, adding Thanos,
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: adding Spider-Man into the mix, like all of these things,
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: like it's, It's still more than just an entertaining movie.
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: I think it is really well made. So, again, not
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: going to argue. Mainstream movie of the year, Avengers, obviously.
- 1:33:14Speaker 6: That works for me.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: But for the other side, the favorite what you would
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: consider indie movie in 2018, the nominees are Won't You
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: Be My Neighbor. Again, the kind of thing, you know,
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: you're not going to see that. upgrade got a lot
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: i'm hearing pretty good things about upgrade i felt like
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: i saw the trailer and went wait is this venom
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: it's kind of it's like it seems like the same
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: basic storyline and yet from what i'm hearing this one
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: is really well put together and no offense to shut
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: up i like venom but you know it's it's yeah
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: i feel like this was that you know it's playing
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: with that dynamic again but from what i hear this
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: is a pretty solid movie so Next up, and this
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: is one of those where I have the question mark.
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: Isle of Dogs. Is that an indie? I mean, it is.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: It's Wes Anderson. He always seems more indie, but that's
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: a pretty big.
- 1:34:13Speaker 5: I just think like, okay, who put it out? Is
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: it like, I think like Sony's indie label.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: I'm sure a studio came along and released it, yeah.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: But even like... Normal indie movies don't have the kind
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: of funding to put together stop-motion animation.
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: They could have gotten away with that with maybe 90s
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: Wes Anderson movies, but I feel like he's too much of.
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: Yeah, Bottle Rock, it's an indie movie. Isle of Dogs,
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: it's kind of hard to call.
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: It's definitely not an indie movie.
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: It's worth being nominated somewhere, but it is weird that
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: it landed on the indie side.
- 1:34:43Speaker 6: I think this goes back to what we've talked about before.
- 1:34:47Speaker 6: The lines of what is and what isn't an indie
- 1:34:49Speaker 6: movie anyway are just kind of blurred.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: It's kind of confusing. I get it. I don't know exactly.
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: That's why I leave it up to them. I don't
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: want to have to nail down this should be an
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: indie movie. I'm like, who the hell am I to say?
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: I kind of like leaving it to the viewer. Next up, Hereditary. Again,
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: you end up with a solid group of people when
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: you add all this stuff up. I think That's what
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: I think is interesting. Not the winner. Do I really
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: have to? I mean, you know what the winner is, right?
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: And the winner is Mandy. I mean, it is the
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: year of Mandy as the alternate cinema world goes. And
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: that's what I was saying before. Yeah, I was going
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: to say, these are.
- 1:35:32Speaker 5: All like arthouse, I wouldn't say independent films.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: But weird. Again, it's not the favorite end of arthouse,
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: which is its own weird movie. But that's the one
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: that kind of got elevated up to Oscar level. Whereas
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: stuff like Mandy's not going to get there. Hereditary's not
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: going to get there. You know, it's like.
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: And it's not that it shouldn't. It's just Oscar people
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: don't know how to deal with that kind of movie.
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: And that's one of the things I keep coming back to.
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: And I like having this because I feel like it is.
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: You can go back and even just the years that
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: we've been doing this, you can kind of look at
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: what won and be like, these are interesting to look
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: at because it's not the Oscar movies usually. And so
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: you're looking at like, well, are these movies that our
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: level of fans find interesting? you know, entertaining, are they
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: the ones that are going to hold up? If you
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: come back in 10 or 20 years, are you even
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: going to remember what won the Oscar that year? But
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: these movies that made their way are probably still, you're
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: still thinking about them on a daily basis sometimes. So
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: that's the kind of weird stuff that I like. Cause
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: these are, I mean, these are specifically stuff like Mandy
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: and hereditary. It's like, these are movies that fall on
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: both sides of the scale. It's like, we're cause our,
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: I mean, coming out of the stuff that we do,
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: it's like we're half drive-in theater and half art house.
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: And I'm like, well, that's both. Like those movies, like
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: neither could exist without both of those ends of cinema.
- 1:37:01Speaker 5: Upgrade two is that's exactly what it is.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Yeah, all of these. It's like these are the kind
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: of movies that fall in that little world. Yeah, it's
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: like they play on both sides. So it's all these
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: filmmakers that came up probably watching schlockier stuff that was
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: drive-in movies. And then kind of being interested in that,
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: specifically after the 90s, that arthouse thing kicked in. So
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: it's like, what if I took the smarts of an
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: arthouse movie and put it together with the shock value
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: of a schlock movie? And you get all of this
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: stuff that we keep getting. But again, the kind of
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: stuff that's not going to get recognition from super mainstream
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: Oscar kind of bullshit. So again, I like that we
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: have this list. So thank you for coming along on
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: this ride. Of course. And if you yourself disagree with
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: any of these nominees or winners, did you vote? Because,
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: I mean, that's how we got these. So, it's kind
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: of your fault if you don't like it.
- 1:38:00Speaker 6: So, how many categories did Mandy take?
- 1:38:04Speaker 5: Did you keep track of it?
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: Let's see. I mean, it was.
- 1:38:06Speaker 5: At least half.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: I mean, it's Best Indie Movie, it's Best Director, it's
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: Best Score, it's... It may have just been the big
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: ones there. Because Annihilation took a lot from it. It
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: was neck and neck on a lot of them.
- 1:38:25Speaker 6: Hereditary seemed to show up a few times as well.
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: Hereditary, Annihilation, and Mandy. Which again, these are weird. I mean,
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: at least Annihilation is kind of Oscar-ish. But at the
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: same time, it's a weird movie even for the Oscars
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: to get on board with. So, yeah. I think it
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: was just the big ones. It was just at the
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: end there. It took the main three or four there
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: at the end.
- 1:38:48Speaker 5: All three of those movies... feel like are better than
- 1:38:51Speaker 5: all the best pictures yeah i mean again if i'm
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: thinking of i don't even know what i mean i
- 1:38:56Speaker 5: know a few of what's nominated but none of them
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: were and.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: None of them were as important as the foiler winners
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: so any of you that have won or feel free
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: to come by and pick up your foil i have
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: it right here you can you can hear it right
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: there real foil.
- 1:39:15Speaker 5: It's great because like from a certain angle just looks
- 1:39:18Speaker 5: like um well it just looks like a big chunk
- 1:39:22Speaker 5: of aluminum foil but if you turn it it's like
- 1:39:23Speaker 5: oh it's magically now.
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: An Oscar you have to angle it it's like an
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: optical illusion.
- 1:39:31Speaker 6: Right now it looks like a body in a morgue
- 1:39:35Speaker 6: covered by one of those blankets that's.
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: Part of the creepiness that's what bothers me it's very
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: fitting to give the movies that one but.
- 1:39:42Speaker 6: When you turn it to the side it kind of
- 1:39:45Speaker 6: looks like a giant penis.
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: Also, kind of fitting for some of our films.
- 1:39:51Speaker 6: But yeah, please come pick up your Foiley because it
- 1:39:54Speaker 6: will look great on your shelf of other awards.
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: Yeah, you can knock that Oscar out of the way
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: and just put this Foiler right next to it. Alright, so, again,
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: thank you for voting. This has become a fight every
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: year to actually get people involved, so if you are
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: interested in this or pissed off that you didn't, you know,
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: the ones you wanted to win didn't, go ahead and
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: email us right now. Get on the list. I'll try
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: to keep track of people for next year, so get
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: involved for next year and you can kind of swing
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: the pendulum that way. There's a few of them that were,
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: came down to one vote sometimes, so you could have
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: made the change, so Get involved. Be there next year.
- 1:40:37Speaker 6: Plus, this is a good way for everybody who's always
- 1:40:40Speaker 6: complaining about the movies that they love that don't get
- 1:40:44Speaker 6: any recognition.
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: And then, yeah, you've got to get involved.
- 1:40:49Speaker 5: Make your own award.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: Help spread the word.
- 1:40:50Speaker 6: Because there were movies on here today I was not
- 1:40:53Speaker 6: familiar with that I will probably go out and watch.
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: That was my takeaway. There were two or three different
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: ones that I was like... Either just knew it by
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: title or there were a couple I didn't even know
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: the title. Right. And they kept popping up and I
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: was like, what is this? And then I went and
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: looked at the trailer. I was like, holy shit. So yeah,
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: I've added three or four just off the... the nominees
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: that came in that i was either barely aware of
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: that now have been pushed to the top of the
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: list of stuff i need to see so i think
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: this is like one of those things that you can
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: use this you know the nominees and maybe not even
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: much like the oscars it's not about winning it's just
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: an honor to be nominated but you look at this
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: list of nominees you're probably going to find some really
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: interesting movies that maybe you didn't already know about so
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: Use this list as a tool. Go out and find
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: all these movies and watch them.
- 1:41:39Speaker 6: But it is also a big honor to win a Foiler.
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: I think it is. As the creator of the Foilers,
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: I find it very prestigious. And I will gladly hand
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: you one if you win. Probably not without it, though.
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: I do think it's... There's someone I wanted to give
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: one last year, but they didn't win. And I'm like, sorry.
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: And then I wadded it up and threw it away.
- 1:42:02Speaker 7: So.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: I was like, it would have been an otter, but...
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: This is all about Foley this year. But, yeah, then
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: that's the other thing as far as getting the word out.
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: It's getting the word out about these movies as well.
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: So if you know anybody out there that likes these
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: kind of weird movies that you do and probably isn't
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: paying attention to our show, send them the link for...
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: either this episode or I'm going to put it all
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: into text form. Once this episode goes up the following week,
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: I'm going to release all of it in text form
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: on the website. So you can send them the list.
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: You can send them us rambling for this episode and
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: maybe they'll find some good movies. So help spread the
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: word that way too. And just pass the link on
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: to other people and spread the word about all of
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: these movies. Maybe they've never heard of Mandy and you'll
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: blow their mind. All right, let's round things out with
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: this year's winner. For best song. That's right. We're going
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: out with Miss Dolly Parton. Otherwise, that about does it.
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: We will return next time. Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: It's been an honor bringing you The Foilers.
- 1:43:12Speaker 5: Thanks, Dolly.
- 1:43:13Speaker 6: Bye, everybody.
- 1:43:15Speaker 8: Tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen.
- 1:43:17Speaker 11: Pour myself a cup of ambition and yawn and stretch and.
- 1:43:21Speaker 8: Try to come to life.
- 1:43:24Speaker 11: Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumping Out
- 1:43:27Speaker 11: on the streets the traffic starts jumping With folks like.
- 1:43:29Speaker 8: Me on the job from nine to five.
- 1:43:33Speaker 11: Working nine to five What a way to make a
- 1:43:37Speaker 11: living Had it getting by It's all taking and no giving.
- 1:43:42Speaker 8: They just use your mind And they never give you
- 1:43:46Speaker 8: credit It's enough to drive you crazy To fight for
- 1:43:54Speaker 8: service and devotion.
- 1:43:56Speaker 12: You would think that I would deserve a fair promotion.
- 1:44:00Speaker 8: Want to move ahead, but the boss won't seem to
- 1:44:04Speaker 8: let me.
- 1:44:05Speaker 12: I swear sometimes that man is out to get me.
- 1:44:15Speaker 8: They let you dream just to watch them shatter. You're
- 1:44:17Speaker 8: just a step on the boss man's ladder. But you've
- 1:44:20Speaker 8: got dreams he'll never take away.
- 1:44:22Speaker 11: You're on the same boat with a lot of your friends.
- 1:44:27Speaker 11: Waiting for the day your ship will come in. And
- 1:44:29Speaker 11: the tide's gonna turn.
- 1:44:30Speaker 12: And it's all gonna roll your way. Working 9 to 5,
- 1:44:35Speaker 12: what a way to make a living. Getting by, it's
- 1:44:39Speaker 12: all taking and no giving. They just use your mind
- 1:44:44Speaker 12: and you never.
- 1:44:45Speaker 8: Get the credit. It's enough to drive you crazy if
- 1:44:50Speaker 8: you let it. 9 to 5, yeah, they got you
- 1:44:54Speaker 8: where they want you.
- 1:44:56Speaker 12: There's no better life than you think about it, don't you?
- 1:45:00Speaker 8: It's okay. Rich man's game, no matter what they call
- 1:45:04Speaker 8: it And you.
- 1:45:05Speaker 9: Spend your life, throwing money in his wallet Not to.
- 1:45:11Speaker 8: Buy, but I don't pay the man for him See,
- 1:45:13Speaker 8: they're getting by, it's all taken and no giving They
- 1:45:18Speaker 8: just use your money, then they never give you credit
- 1:45:22Speaker 8: It's enough to drive you.
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: Crazy Speaking of which, I need to try some of this.
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: All right, so tell us once again what I'm trying here.
- 1:45:41Speaker 6: That is maple syrup cotton candy.
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: Which I'm all about. Granted, I actually used to work
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: in really terrible desserts as a tie-in. I would find
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: a way to put bacon on a brownie, which I
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: don't really eat. Actually, they released it. I can see
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: that being good. They released it. It was like a
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: Pillsbury or Duncan Hines. Somebody put out the ones that
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: had the normal Duncan Hines tub o-icing, and then the
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: top had a little cup on it with bacon bits
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: in it. I swear to God. I was just like, well,
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: they put it out. This isn't even my fault.
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: Chocolate and salt go amazingly well together.
- 1:46:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: The whole weird sea salt. But bacon, but meat. I
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: don't know. Bacon found a weird fan base these last
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: 10 years. I can't say anything.
- 1:46:26Speaker 5: I've had plenty of maple logs in my time.
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: Once again, maple syrup cotton candy is the way to
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: round out this episode.
- 1:46:33Speaker 6: A fun fact about this stuff. If you let one
- 1:46:36Speaker 6: of these bags sit here for about three weeks, it
- 1:46:39Speaker 6: will eventually start to dry out and shrink down and
- 1:46:44Speaker 6: it's these little chunks of sugar and my wife breaks
- 1:46:50Speaker 6: them up and puts them in her oatmeal and says
- 1:46:53Speaker 6: it's delicious. And my buddy Pat did that with his coffee,
- 1:46:57Speaker 6: which to me doesn't sound great, but he said it
- 1:47:00Speaker 6: was pretty good.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: I mean, if you leave this sitting here, I'll probably
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: shove it in some coffee tomorrow.
- 1:47:05Speaker 6: Yeah, that is yours to keep. I don't want that.
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: But that makes me think if you.
- 1:47:10Speaker 6: Feel free to take this other bag home.
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: Have you, or more specifically, I suppose, in this story now,
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: your wife tried the dinosaur eggs... Oatmeal? No. Again, I
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: don't even think it's name brand. I think it's like
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: the Kroger knockoff oatmeal. They've got one box that's specifically
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: geared for kids, and it's like dinosaur eggs. Basically, it's
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: just a chunk of sugary maple sugar, something, some sort
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: of brown sugar egg that comes out with your packet
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: of oatmeal, and then you just stir it up, and
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: it kind of mixes. brown sugar mixed in but it's
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: supposed to be.
- 1:47:49Speaker 6: A dinosaur maybe i did see that.
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: If not you can buy it and it might just
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: confuse her but i.
- 1:47:57Speaker 6: I have not been able to eat oatmeal since i
- 1:47:59Speaker 6: saw the golden child that's.
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: Quite a takeaway do you want to elaborate.
- 1:48:05Speaker 6: Well i don't know if you remember the beginning of
- 1:48:07Speaker 6: the golden child they have the bowls of oatmeal that
- 1:48:10Speaker 6: are also full of blood Sure. That's the way mine
- 1:48:14Speaker 6: is every morning. Well, there was a product when I
- 1:48:17Speaker 6: was a kid, at the same time that movie came out,
- 1:48:19Speaker 6: I think it was called.
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: Swirlers.
- 1:48:21Speaker 6: And you had your oatmeal and you heated your oatmeal
- 1:48:23Speaker 6: and it had like a little pack of jelly that
- 1:48:26Speaker 6: you could like swirl on top. Well, what I would
- 1:48:29Speaker 6: do is I would put it on, I would just
- 1:48:32Speaker 6: put it all on top of the oatmeal and then
- 1:48:35Speaker 6: stir the oatmeal up. And when you press the spoon
- 1:48:38Speaker 6: into the oatmeal... The jelly would squirt out, and that
- 1:48:42Speaker 6: was fine until there's a scene in The Golden Child
- 1:48:47Speaker 6: where Eddie Murphy presses on the oatmeal with the spoon,
- 1:48:51Speaker 6: and the strawberry-colored blood that looked exactly like the swirlers
- 1:48:59Speaker 6: that I ate every morning came squirting out, and I
- 1:49:01Speaker 6: was like, I'm done.
