- 1:45Speaker 3: winter storm Blair. Now you knew it was coming, by golly,
- 1:48Speaker 3: it's here. We've had snow, freezing rain, sleeked, just plain
- 1:54Speaker 3: old rain, ice, and now they tell us more snow
- 1:57Speaker 3: is on the way. I will say this, if you
- 1:59Speaker 3: do not have to be on the road today and
- 2:02Speaker 3: probably tomorrow, don't be there because right now and here
- 2:08Speaker 3: in the Charleston area we've had a little bit of
- 2:09Speaker 3: a lull in things been kind of quiet, but that's
- 2:12Speaker 3: about the change in the next hour or two, as
- 2:15Speaker 3: we're gonna have more snow. So we've had as well
- 2:17Speaker 3: as you know, we had the snow, and then late
- 2:19Speaker 3: last night the freezing rain of a sleet rain in
- 2:22Speaker 3: certain areas washed away a little bit of the snow,
- 2:25Speaker 3: but then freezing rain. Now we're gonna add in the
- 2:27Speaker 3: depend on where you live, another one to three inches
- 2:29Speaker 3: of snow on top of that. So if your driveway
- 2:33Speaker 3: and your your walkway near where you live happened to
- 2:37Speaker 3: be cleared, if you went out there and you shoveled it,
- 2:39Speaker 3: good on you for doing that. But you're gonna get
- 2:41Speaker 3: to do it all again here in a couple of hours.
- 2:44Speaker 3: So we're going to talk a lot about the weather.
- 2:46Speaker 3: As you may imagine. Of course, the city of Charleston,
- 2:48Speaker 3: the most of the not only the city of Charleston,
- 2:52Speaker 3: but the government offices are closed. The governor's issued a
- 2:55Speaker 3: state of emergency for the state of West Virginia. If
- 2:58Speaker 3: you've got an appointment somewhere to day, ninety nine percent
- 3:02Speaker 3: chance it's been canceled. I don't know. You may want
- 3:04Speaker 3: to call ahead just before you go, so we're gonna.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Have Charleston may or maybe you should a good book
- 3:08Speaker 5: on the show. Come up a little bit later on.
- 3:11Speaker 5: She is scarpus to be here anyway, so I talk
- 3:13Speaker 5: to her about the weather. We'll also talk to her
- 3:14Speaker 5: about some other things that are going on as well.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Of course, Charlston City Council scheduled to meet tonight. We'll
- 3:20Speaker 3: get the status of that from her coming up a
- 3:22Speaker 3: little bit later on. Today is also the dawning of
- 3:25Speaker 3: a new era in the world of WVRC Media and
- 3:28Speaker 3: Metro News. As a hoppy kerchival heads off into retirement.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Dave Wilson and TJ. Meadows will take over one half
- 3:34Speaker 3: of that duo. TJ Meadows, my new officemate, is here
- 3:37Speaker 3: in the building. We'll talk to him about what we
- 3:39Speaker 3: can expect on talk Line today. Plus back to the
- 3:41Speaker 3: Weather Media. Rileig is Brian Hughes from Storm Tracker thirteen.
- 3:43Speaker 3: For the third consecutive day we'll be on the show.
- 3:47Speaker 3: We are going to take a little bit of a
- 3:48Speaker 3: break from the weather though, just for a moment, and
- 3:52Speaker 3: I think we could stand to get our collective minds
- 3:54Speaker 3: off the weather for a moment. There is a new
- 3:56Speaker 3: film out that from what I am told, will will
- 4:00Speaker 3: really and sadly hit home for those of us who
- 4:03Speaker 3: live through the pill scourge here in Appalachia. The film
- 4:07Speaker 3: is called Hazard, and we originally had like an entire
- 4:11Speaker 3: crew of people scheduled to be here, the actors and
- 4:14Speaker 3: so on and so forth. Unfortunately, flying right now from
- 4:17Speaker 3: California and then I think into Chicago into West Virginia
- 4:20Speaker 3: not very conducive with his weather. So we do have
- 4:23Speaker 3: Eddie Menzer, who directed and wrote the screenplays. He's here
- 4:27Speaker 3: right now, Eddie, Good morning, welcome to the show.
- 4:28Speaker 6: Good morning, Thank you for having me.
- 4:30Speaker 3: And thank you for being the guy who actually could
- 4:32Speaker 3: be here today because the rest of them are probably
- 4:34Speaker 3: are they are?
- 4:34Speaker 2: They?
- 4:35Speaker 3: Are they in California right now?
- 4:36Speaker 6: Yeah, they're in California. I had the ability of walking
- 4:39Speaker 6: from the embassy.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Now, you're a native West Virginia though, yes, sir, give
- 4:44Speaker 3: us some of your background about who you are, what
- 4:47Speaker 3: you've done in the past, and about where are you
- 4:48Speaker 3: from in West Virginia.
- 4:49Speaker 6: I'm originally from a small town in New Martinsville, West Virginia,
- 4:53Speaker 6: the northern panhandle in the state. Currently live in Atlanta, Georgia,
- 4:58Speaker 6: and I love telling Balachian stories.
- 5:02Speaker 3: And you've done these sorts of projects in the past.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Talk about some of the other projects you've done.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Yes, Or My previous film was called Mine nine. It
- 5:09Speaker 6: was a coal mine disaster movie that came out in
- 5:12Speaker 6: twenty nineteen, and we did the same path. We opened
- 5:14Speaker 6: an Appalachia then expanded to the coast, and that's what
- 5:18Speaker 6: we're gonna do with this one, all these Appalachian stories.
- 5:22Speaker 6: If you're going to tell stories about the region, it's
- 5:24Speaker 6: really great to open them in the region so the
- 5:27Speaker 6: people can be the judge and the jury, and then
- 5:29Speaker 6: we can expand out to New York, LA and beyond.
- 5:33Speaker 3: And you being from here, you know, it kind of
- 5:36Speaker 3: gives it a little bit of extra because you know,
- 5:38Speaker 3: anybody could tell a story, but you know this area,
- 5:41Speaker 3: you know the people, you know West Virginia and on
- 5:43Speaker 3: on into Kentucky and so on and so forth, So
- 5:46Speaker 3: who better to tell the story?
- 5:47Speaker 7: Yes?
- 5:48Speaker 6: Or all my stories that are come from a really
- 5:50Speaker 6: personal point of view of some like life that I've
- 5:53Speaker 6: experienced or loved ones that have experienced it.
- 5:56Speaker 3: How did you get into filmmaking to begin with? That's
- 5:58Speaker 3: the one question I always want to ask people any
- 6:00Speaker 3: career path that's a little bit different. What was it
- 6:02Speaker 3: that made you want to do this? Not the project,
- 6:05Speaker 3: but I mean filmmaking in general.
- 6:07Speaker 6: I was at West Virginia University and I took an
- 6:10Speaker 6: advertising class and Professor Shai was my teacher, and he said,
- 6:15Speaker 6: you're not writing ads, you're writing short films and told
- 6:19Speaker 6: me about a film camp that I should go to
- 6:21Speaker 6: and experience. And I loved it and I got hooked.
- 6:24Speaker 6: But it was a West Virginia University, good old WVU.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Now I have a trailer for the film posted on
- 6:31Speaker 3: my social media. It's on Dave Island Radio on Facebook.
- 6:33Speaker 3: So if you get a chance, go and check it out,
- 6:36Speaker 3: as I did last week. When you're when your folks
- 6:37Speaker 3: reached out to me about having you on the show,
- 6:41Speaker 3: I will say the the lead actor in this story, now,
- 6:45Speaker 3: he's a British guy, right, Yes, sir, he nailed the
- 6:47Speaker 3: Appalachian accent, he really did.
- 6:50Speaker 6: He came here one month in advance. We filmed in Harlan, Kentucky,
- 6:55Speaker 6: and he came a one month in advance and learned
- 6:58Speaker 6: the dialect and went to a lot of recovery meetings
- 7:01Speaker 6: and a lot of people in recovery helped us make
- 7:03Speaker 6: the movie, so he really engulfed himself into the environment.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Tell us the synopsis of the movie. What's it about.
- 7:10Speaker 6: It's about a young couple who are both going through addiction,
- 7:14Speaker 6: and it's really just a story about love. It's what
- 7:17Speaker 6: your parents have to deal with, Like they have a
- 7:19Speaker 6: child of their own. His father's also on drugs and
- 7:24Speaker 6: he's been kicked out of his south. So it's just
- 7:26Speaker 6: that messed up, messy family dynamic of addiction.
- 7:31Speaker 3: And so many of us from this part of the
- 7:33Speaker 3: world can certainly can relate to that, and particularly when
- 7:37Speaker 3: you get into areas like down into Kentucky and so
- 7:40Speaker 3: on and so forth, because the people that found themselves
- 7:43Speaker 3: back in the day, many of them who found themselves
- 7:45Speaker 3: addicted to various whether it's oxy conton or whatever the
- 7:48Speaker 3: case may be. I don't know about this particular film,
- 7:50Speaker 3: but many of them started out with legitimate reasons to
- 7:54Speaker 3: have said medications, you know, an injury work because we
- 7:58Speaker 3: work our rear ends off in this part of the world,
- 8:00Speaker 3: and it's strenuous work, whether it's in the coal mines
- 8:02Speaker 3: or whether it's in the chemical plants or whatever, and
- 8:05Speaker 3: it lends itself to injuries and in many cases, this
- 8:08Speaker 3: is where some of this addiction came from.
- 8:11Speaker 6: Yes, sir, And that's a prominent storyline in the movie
- 8:15Speaker 6: is the father was a coal miner who got prescribed.
- 8:18Speaker 6: But what we try to do is not talk about
- 8:21Speaker 6: the pharmaceutical companies. We only try to talk about like
- 8:24Speaker 6: what us Appalachians see in front of our face. So
- 8:27Speaker 6: we don't know anything about the pharmaceutical companies or the
- 8:30Speaker 6: sales reps or anything more, just about what do we
- 8:34Speaker 6: see in front of our face from the people being
- 8:36Speaker 6: prescribed to medicine.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Well, it's a fascinating tale. And again it's somebody who
- 8:42Speaker 3: spend a lot of time. I mean it obviously it
- 8:45Speaker 3: affected the Charleston aary too. But I'm a southern West
- 8:47Speaker 3: Virginia guy, and my father worked for many, many years
- 8:50Speaker 3: in the coal mines in Kentucky and we certainly saw
- 8:53Speaker 3: a lot of that there. And unfortunately, you know, the
- 8:57Speaker 3: pill issue seems to have gotten a lot better. However,
- 9:00Speaker 3: when you take away that addiction, many people just trade
- 9:04Speaker 3: it for other addictions.
- 9:06Speaker 6: That's the problem with it. Like once somebody, you know,
- 9:10Speaker 6: Purdue Far like some of these opioid companies like they
- 9:13Speaker 6: targeted Appalachia because of lower economic work related injuries, so
- 9:18Speaker 6: we were like a prime target for them. So once
- 9:20Speaker 6: somebody is addicted, it's they're always going to try to
- 9:22Speaker 6: replace it with something else, even though they can pull
- 9:25Speaker 6: the pills away, but they got to find something.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Talk about the filming of the of the of the
- 9:31Speaker 3: picture where you said was in Harlan, Kentucky. Is that right?
- 9:34Speaker 8: Or yes?
- 9:35Speaker 3: But you filmed in some other places as well as that, right?
- 9:37Speaker 3: Or was it all in Harlan.
- 9:38Speaker 6: Now we filmed all in the tri city area of
- 9:40Speaker 6: Harlan of Harland County, a little town called Cumberland. But
- 9:45Speaker 6: we filmed fifteen days in July of twenty twenty two.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Okay, what was the reception like from the town when
- 9:53Speaker 3: you folks rolled into town.
- 9:54Speaker 6: So, being in Appalachian, I knew how to handle this.
- 9:57Speaker 6: I started going to Harlan and January of that year,
- 10:01Speaker 6: and it took me from January to about May for
- 10:04Speaker 6: the community to trust me. And once they trusted me,
- 10:08Speaker 6: we filmed in July. That's when, like between May and July,
- 10:12Speaker 6: all the cast and crews started to come in and
- 10:15Speaker 6: the community opened their hearts up to us, Like from
- 10:18Speaker 6: the police to the mayor to you name it. The
- 10:22Speaker 6: people of Harlan County open their hearts up.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And I think sometimes again, you hit the nail on
- 10:27Speaker 3: the head, Eddie. You being an Appalachian, you can speak
- 10:31Speaker 3: the language, you can put your arm around him and no, look,
- 10:33Speaker 3: here's what we're doing here. Because so many times people
- 10:36Speaker 3: and this is not unique to Appalachia. It happens in
- 10:40Speaker 3: other areas too. People come in big out of town
- 10:42Speaker 3: folks to tell the story of Appalachia, or they going
- 10:45Speaker 3: to tell the story of an inner city in Los Angeles,
- 10:47Speaker 3: or whatever the case may be. They don't speak the language,
- 10:51Speaker 3: they don't know how to relate to people. And I
- 10:54Speaker 3: think sometimes we tend to be in this part of
- 10:56Speaker 3: the world a little bit fearful about someone else telling
- 10:59Speaker 3: our stories. But it sounds like you were able to
- 11:01Speaker 3: gain the trust of the community in order to tell
- 11:03Speaker 3: what was a very real story.
- 11:05Speaker 6: Absolutely, I knew that that was the first thing I
- 11:07Speaker 6: had to do, Like, if the community doesn't trust me,
- 11:09Speaker 6: then we're not going to accomplish what we're there to do.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Now, you had a series of events planned, like I said,
- 11:18Speaker 3: we had the actors planned to be here. You got
- 11:19Speaker 3: to town a little bit early. You actually walked here
- 11:22Speaker 3: this morning from the Embassy suites because of the situation
- 11:25Speaker 3: I think with the parking there. So we appreciate your dedication.
- 11:29Speaker 3: What kind of other things once this weather breaks, do
- 11:31Speaker 3: you have planned to get this out to talk to
- 11:34Speaker 3: people and do in new screenings and whatnot.
- 11:36Speaker 6: Yeah, So we open in theaters on January the tenth
- 11:39Speaker 6: all over, so please check us out from that standpoint.
- 11:44Speaker 6: But on the eighth, we're going to be in Harlan,
- 11:46Speaker 6: Kentucky doing a community screening, and then we're going to
- 11:49Speaker 6: go into Hazzard, Kentucky to do a community screening in
- 11:51Speaker 6: the ninth. Then on the tenth we're going to do
- 11:53Speaker 6: a premiere in Louisville, Kentucky. And then after the tenth,
- 11:57Speaker 6: eleventh through the fourteenth, I'm backtracking to come back here
- 12:01Speaker 6: to West Virginia to pick up everything that we never
- 12:03Speaker 6: got to do now and uh.
- 12:06Speaker 3: So, as I said, the trailer for the for the movie,
- 12:09Speaker 3: which is absolutely fantastic. I when when your folks sent
- 12:12Speaker 3: it to me, I showed it to the people I
- 12:14Speaker 3: was sharing office with upstairs, and they were all gathered
- 12:16Speaker 3: around like people like, wow, this is this looks like
- 12:18Speaker 3: it's really really good stuff. And and once you get
- 12:22Speaker 3: through all the initial screenings and so on and so forth,
- 12:24Speaker 3: where will people be able to see the.
- 12:26Speaker 6: Movie all over Appalachia. If you go to www. Dot
- 12:31Speaker 6: hazard themovie dot com, you can see all of our
- 12:35Speaker 6: locations we're playing at. So we're all throughout West Virginia, Kentucky. Uh,
- 12:40Speaker 6: we'll be in branching out into Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and
- 12:43Speaker 6: then we're going to go out to the cities.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And this is and this is a story again that
- 12:47Speaker 3: even though it's set down in that part of Kentucky,
- 12:50Speaker 3: we can all certainly relate to Eddie. I appreciate you
- 12:53Speaker 3: being under under difficult circumstances, as I told you off
- 12:56Speaker 3: the air, when you plan things as you well know.
- 12:58Speaker 3: In Appalachia in January this time, a couple of weeks ago,
- 13:00Speaker 3: we had temperatures on the six season and low seventies
- 13:03Speaker 3: and we were battling windstorms. Now it's been snow and ice.
- 13:05Speaker 3: You never know what you're gonna get with Mountain Mama.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Gotta love it.
- 13:09Speaker 3: You gotta love that. I appreciate you being here, man.

- 16:09Speaker 3: The guy that's responsible for all this, meteorologist Brian Hughes
- 16:12Speaker 3: from Storm Tracker thirteen. How are you, man?
- 16:15Speaker 8: Oh, you know, it's been a busy number of days already.
- 16:19Speaker 3: You know this is the third straight day that you
- 16:22Speaker 3: have been on our show. Third straight. You want to
- 16:25Speaker 3: make it? Let me get four tomorrow and five. I
- 16:28Speaker 3: don't just this, Just come on in here full time.
- 16:29Speaker 3: You're an old radio guy anyway, right, exactly.
- 16:32Speaker 8: Listen, I've done radio all my life, so I'm totally
- 16:36Speaker 8: used to it. But also, hey, listen, we got a
- 16:37Speaker 8: storm coming Friday into Saturday. To that one.
- 16:40Speaker 3: All right, weather boy, let's just take one at a time, okay,
- 16:43Speaker 3: just so we'll worry about that later. All right. So
- 16:45Speaker 3: we've been talking about this storm for well over a
- 16:49Speaker 3: week in your opinion, and there's no way to say this.
- 16:52Speaker 3: I just kind of want to kind of get your
- 16:53Speaker 3: take on it. Was it all it was cracked up
- 16:57Speaker 3: to be? I mean, obviously there are issues you don't know.
- 17:01Speaker 3: No one gets it one hundred percent right, because you
- 17:03Speaker 3: are dealing with mother nature. But it's pretty much what
- 17:05Speaker 3: you guys expected it would be, right right.
- 17:08Speaker 8: You know. I think the only thing was we probably
- 17:10Speaker 8: undersold the amount of snow is the canal valley down
- 17:14Speaker 8: into the cold fields and the ice element. You know,
- 17:18Speaker 8: if you're looking like last week, the ice element was
- 17:21Speaker 8: not as prevalent as it is right now. I mean,
- 17:24Speaker 8: we knew we were gonna have an ice storm, but
- 17:26Speaker 8: you know to what extent. I mean, Listen, I just
- 17:29Speaker 8: talked to Rod Blackstone. His pine tree fell into his out.
- 17:33Speaker 8: Oh yeah, so he's got part of the Yeah, so
- 17:36Speaker 8: he's got part of the roof damage there. So and
- 17:39Speaker 8: I'm looking at the MANGOI tree out front of our
- 17:41Speaker 8: TV station. It's sagging, you know. So you know, I
- 17:45Speaker 8: think we I think we nailed the majority of it.
- 17:48Speaker 8: I'm I'm like a probably as seventy five percent we
- 17:51Speaker 8: nailed this. But you know, there's just some things that
- 17:53Speaker 8: you'll always have been perfections on and that you have
- 17:55Speaker 8: to go back and look, Okay, what we have done
- 17:58Speaker 8: better or seem better, and really that it just bowls
- 18:01Speaker 8: down to you know, trusting your gut on a lot
- 18:03Speaker 8: of this. And we trust our gut on a lot
- 18:04Speaker 8: of it, and we got most of it here.
- 18:06Speaker 3: And when you think about this storm, one of the things, yeah,
- 18:09Speaker 3: I heard you say, actually I think you said this
- 18:11Speaker 3: on the air and also in social media that in
- 18:12Speaker 3: your twenty five plus years of doing this sort of thing,
- 18:15Speaker 3: you and Spencer Adkins and the folks over there that
- 18:17Speaker 3: do this, this was one of the more difficult storms
- 18:20Speaker 3: to predict because it was one, two, three, four, five
- 18:22Speaker 3: different phases. We're still not done yet, but it was
- 18:26Speaker 3: overall a very very what you tell me, a difficult
- 18:28Speaker 3: storm to predict, Brian.
- 18:31Speaker 8: It really was because you have to look at the
- 18:33Speaker 8: different elements that are involved. Like you said, we're really
- 18:36Speaker 8: at five phases, and that is you know, you had
- 18:38Speaker 8: first of all, the you know, the initial band of
- 18:41Speaker 8: snow that came in. It was right on time, exactly
- 18:43Speaker 8: what we're talking about. Then you had to switch over,
- 18:46Speaker 8: you know. Then you had the heavy snow that continued
- 18:49Speaker 8: to band over, noman over again. You had the freezing
- 18:52Speaker 8: grain that moved in and just a little bit of
- 18:54Speaker 8: sleep that's it was just temporary. Right after that, you
- 18:57Speaker 8: have that rain, Then you've got the law that we're
- 19:00Speaker 8: in now and then you're going to have the wind
- 19:03Speaker 8: and sow this afternoon that's going to take the power
- 19:05Speaker 8: lines down, that they trees down that are weighted down
- 19:08Speaker 8: too much. And then we've got the arcticare that moves
- 19:11Speaker 8: in as well, and that's going to carry us on
- 19:13Speaker 8: into the next storm.
- 19:14Speaker 3: So even though we're talking about a snow event, Brian,
- 19:18Speaker 3: from this point on, the thread of freezing rain is
- 19:21Speaker 3: going to start to subside. It doesn't mean that the
- 19:23Speaker 3: threat of power outages is going to subside.
- 19:26Speaker 8: No, because we've still got probably another three hours of
- 19:31Speaker 8: extremely light freezing rain, some freezing drizzle that'll be popping
- 19:35Speaker 8: up here and there, just spotty in nature. But then
- 19:37Speaker 8: we move to snow essentially about noontime, and it's going
- 19:41Speaker 8: to be snow for the rest of the day. But
- 19:43Speaker 8: in that snow we will have some lighteout conditions and
- 19:47Speaker 8: we're going to have, you know, the power issues because
- 19:49Speaker 8: we're have north winds going to be anywhere from ten
- 19:52Speaker 8: to fifteen easy with some guts to twenty. And that's
- 19:55Speaker 8: what you can need. I mean, you could have a
- 19:58Speaker 8: five to ten mile an hour wind and we'll take
- 20:00Speaker 8: trees and power lines down. I mean, because you know
- 20:02Speaker 8: you and I assumed you hear the crackling in the wind,
- 20:05Speaker 8: and you're going to hear a lot of that this
- 20:08Speaker 8: afternoon and the sevening, and it's going to be a
- 20:10Speaker 8: problem for us with the power out of this right now,
- 20:13Speaker 8: if you look collectively across the region, our power outage
- 20:17Speaker 8: numbers are in the tens of thousands. When you look
- 20:21Speaker 8: at southwest Virginia, western West Virginia into parts of eastern
- 20:25Speaker 8: Kentucky that we cover, you know, we're looking at thirty
- 20:29Speaker 8: thousand plus customers about.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Power well, and again we're suffering from it as well
- 20:33Speaker 3: because we have a lot of stations in this building,
- 20:35Speaker 3: and I think the majority of them are off the
- 20:37Speaker 3: terrestrial radio right now. Thank goodness for us that so
- 20:41Speaker 3: many people listen on apps, because you know, it's not
- 20:44Speaker 3: as big a deal for us as what it used
- 20:45Speaker 3: to be. We never want to, you know, shut out
- 20:47Speaker 3: any of our listeners, but especially to this show in
- 20:50Speaker 3: this station. The majority of people listen online anyway, either
- 20:53Speaker 3: on an app or on a device of some of
- 20:54Speaker 3: some kind or whatever. So at least we have that
- 20:57Speaker 3: to back. And so what about the road conditions, what
- 20:59Speaker 3: do you what are you hearing out there.
- 21:01Speaker 8: So the main roads are and I'm talking about the
- 21:05Speaker 8: main roads. We're talking about interstates and US Highways are
- 21:08Speaker 8: in pre decent shape. Just had the guys come in.
- 21:11Speaker 8: They literally just walked in the door from Palmeroy and
- 21:14Speaker 8: they'll tell you anywhere north of like fair Plane, it's
- 21:17Speaker 8: a problem even on the main roads because you're looking
- 21:20Speaker 8: at some of the snow and ice combined, and so
- 21:24Speaker 8: it's once you get to that snow line that's in
- 21:25Speaker 8: the roads get a little more tricky. But it's around
- 21:28Speaker 8: Charleston Kennell Valley. The Interstate Primary lane and also US
- 21:35Speaker 8: Roads Primary lane are in good shape. But once you
- 21:38Speaker 8: get to the city streets and listen. I was on
- 21:40Speaker 8: the phone with the mayor yesterday and Brent Webster, and
- 21:43Speaker 8: we were trying to game plan on timing and have
- 21:45Speaker 8: Disney things best time of attack, and you know they've
- 21:48Speaker 8: been doing a great job, but it is extremely difficult.
- 21:51Speaker 8: Once you get freezing random x, you can't do much
- 21:54Speaker 8: at all, and so you've got problems that Now, as
- 21:58Speaker 8: I've said about the roads, especially when you get the
- 22:01Speaker 8: intersections and such, it's chunky. Everything's chunky.
- 22:04Speaker 3: That's a good way to put it. Chunky.
- 22:06Speaker 8: Yeah. So it's got your city streets, your neighborhood streets,
- 22:11Speaker 8: I should say, your neighborhood streets are problematic. But if
- 22:14Speaker 8: you can make it to the main rudder like McCorkle,
- 22:16Speaker 8: or if you can make it to you know, uh,
- 22:18Speaker 8: your whatever it is, whatever the road numbers are nineteen nineteen,
- 22:23Speaker 8: you can make it to those, You're okay.
- 22:25Speaker 3: And uh so you guys, and I know folks that
- 22:28Speaker 3: do weather forecasting in general, I mean you just kind
- 22:30Speaker 3: of hunkered down for this, h for this sort of thing.
- 22:33Speaker 3: I mean you this is why this is in the
- 22:35Speaker 3: words of Bill Parcells, this is why you lift all
- 22:37Speaker 3: them weights. You know, you guys kind of prepare for
- 22:40Speaker 3: these things. And I know that you spend some time
- 22:42Speaker 3: sleeping at the stations and then things of that nature.
- 22:45Speaker 3: You are lucky enough to live relatively close. But uh,
- 22:48Speaker 3: this is this is what you do to keep people informed.
- 22:51Speaker 8: Right Listen, It's fun, we love it, and it's it's
- 22:54Speaker 8: also why it's like during spring, we watch tornado coverage
- 22:58Speaker 8: in Oklahoma, Alabama where the big stuff is happening, you know,
- 23:02Speaker 8: so we sort of hone our skills. We watched the radar,
- 23:05Speaker 8: same thing with wind of storms. You're looking at these things,
- 23:07Speaker 8: the different elements, and thankfully, you know, you know, I
- 23:10Speaker 8: know I look pretty and looked young, but and.
- 23:13Speaker 3: You're so humble.
- 23:14Speaker 8: You're so humble, right, just someone, but but I'm thankfully
- 23:19Speaker 8: I've been doing this long enough that you you understand
- 23:21Speaker 8: the storms better. You understand where the belly of the
- 23:25Speaker 8: eaves once you get into it, and how things evolve.
- 23:28Speaker 8: And you're like, oh, I've seen that before. Yep, I
- 23:30Speaker 8: know what to do. So thankfully we've done very good
- 23:33Speaker 8: on this one. The next one be a little tricky,
- 23:34Speaker 8: but we're ready for.
- 23:35Speaker 3: It, and we'll get to that in a moment. Before
- 23:37Speaker 3: I'll let you go, though, what is our timeline for today?
- 23:39Speaker 3: As you said in the Charleston area when I came
- 23:41Speaker 3: in this morning, we're in kind of a lull right now,
- 23:43Speaker 3: but it ain't over.
- 23:45Speaker 8: No, it's not. So we have some light freezing drizzle
- 23:48Speaker 8: from now all the way through about the lunch hour,
- 23:50Speaker 8: about noon one at the latest, we switched back over
- 23:54Speaker 8: to snow, and about two three o'clock, after the winds
- 23:57Speaker 8: really isn't going to start to pick up out of
- 23:58Speaker 8: the north. We'll have light snowshur in additional one to
- 24:01Speaker 8: two inches, could get a couple of spots to hit three,
- 24:03Speaker 8: but additional one to two inches of snow on top
- 24:05Speaker 8: all this that makes it a mess. And then the
- 24:08Speaker 8: snow shuts off somewhere around probably eight to nine o'clock tonight,
- 24:13Speaker 8: and then we're done. We'll have some flurries of the
- 24:15Speaker 8: mountains off and on tonight we'll have some a couple
- 24:18Speaker 8: of flurries with the clouds with any cloud that pass,
- 24:20Speaker 8: but you can see a flury or two. Tomorrow Wednesday,
- 24:23Speaker 8: we have an opportunity to see some snow Lake effect
- 24:26Speaker 8: snow off of Lake Michigan here and we could get
- 24:29Speaker 8: a dusting to an inch on Wednesday, dry Thursday drive
- 24:32Speaker 8: for much of the day on Friday, Friday night into Saturday.
- 24:35Speaker 8: Storm system that comes out of the desert southwest across
- 24:38Speaker 8: Texas as an ice storm heads for us. Primarily looking
- 24:41Speaker 8: at snow with that one.
- 24:43Speaker 3: And it's way too early, I'm sure to put a
- 24:46Speaker 3: number on that, and that's what people want. Follow social
- 24:48Speaker 3: media a lot, and that's what people How many inches
- 24:50Speaker 3: are we going to have? And so on and so forth.
- 24:52Speaker 3: In this particular, if you look at the amount of
- 24:54Speaker 3: snow that we have here in the Kenal Valley. We've
- 24:56Speaker 3: certainly had a whole lot more snow in the past.
- 24:59Speaker 3: But as you and the fo there say, it's about impact.
- 25:01Speaker 3: It's not about inches, it's about impact.
- 25:04Speaker 8: Yeah, and that's the thing, you know, Listen, I think
- 25:07Speaker 8: I've probably had six inches of snow yesterday, but when
- 25:10Speaker 8: you look at the snow right now, it's down to
- 25:12Speaker 8: about two. So that's because of you know, the freezing
- 25:17Speaker 8: rain and the sleet and a little bit of sleep
- 25:18Speaker 8: that came in and compacted it. But you know, what
- 25:21Speaker 8: we're going to look at is impact for this next
- 25:24Speaker 8: one is going to be impact because the ground would
- 25:26Speaker 8: be solidly frozen. So anything that falls, whether it be
- 25:29Speaker 8: rain or freezing rain, sleet, snow, it is going to
- 25:33Speaker 8: stick just because the ground's so solidly frozen. That one
- 25:37Speaker 8: right now, just a rough estimate, it looks to be
- 25:40Speaker 8: a three anywhere from two to four inches worth of
- 25:43Speaker 8: snow with that next one Friday night and to Saturday.
- 25:46Speaker 8: If we're just shooting from the hip at this point.
- 25:48Speaker 8: But there's still a lot of things to go between now, right.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Yeah, one at a time, one a time, Ryan, I
- 25:53Speaker 3: appreciate you being here. At the bottom line is we're
- 25:56Speaker 3: going to Steven without the snow. We're going to stay
- 25:59Speaker 3: in the deep freeze for sometimes. So that snow that's
- 26:01Speaker 3: on your back decker and your backyard, it's going to
- 26:03Speaker 3: be there for a few weeks more than likely.
- 26:05Speaker 8: Right if you have not cleaned it off yet, kind of,
- 26:08Speaker 8: I guess you. I took the actual blower, those loads
- 26:10Speaker 8: big blowers, and I actually blew the snow off every
- 26:13Speaker 8: chance I got, and still I went out there this one.
- 26:16Speaker 8: I was like, well, can't blow this off now. So
- 26:19Speaker 8: but but you've got to do your best to clean
- 26:22Speaker 8: it up because if not, you know, it's just gonna stick.
- 26:25Speaker 8: It's going to stay, and then you got to walk
- 26:27Speaker 8: around it, and you get it's just more problem. So
- 26:28Speaker 8: do your best to get it done. Today virtually nobody
- 26:31Speaker 8: has to work except for just a few of it.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Yeah, TH's media types, all right, Brian, I do appreciate it, man,
- 26:38Speaker 3: Thanks a lot. You guys do a fantastic job. We'll
- 26:40Speaker 3: talk again soon, Man, thanks a lot.

- 27:29Speaker 3: your neighborhood? You know it's it's it's one of those situations.
- 27:35Speaker 3: And I said this when anytime you're talking about weather
- 27:39Speaker 3: is that I had an old radio programmer who told
- 27:41Speaker 3: me this one time. I was fresh out of college
- 27:43Speaker 3: working at a radio station in Ohio and he and
- 27:46Speaker 3: this was well before internet or you know, anything like that.
- 27:48Speaker 3: He told me. He said, people don't want to know
- 27:51Speaker 3: whether it's going to rain or snow or whatever. They
- 27:55Speaker 3: want to know if it's going to rain on them.
- 27:57Speaker 3: And then that's that's pretty that's a it's a pretty
- 28:00Speaker 3: accurate way of putting it. Now, Brian said, as you
- 28:03Speaker 3: will know that to many of you are listening to
- 28:05Speaker 3: us this morning because you're not working today, because a
- 28:08Speaker 3: great number of businesses are closed today, there are some
- 28:11Speaker 3: that are open. The governor did issue a state of
- 28:14Speaker 3: emergency for the state of West Virginia, so I would
- 28:16Speaker 3: urge you again if you do not have to be
- 28:19Speaker 3: out on the roads today, please do not. And a
- 28:22Speaker 3: lot of people will look out their window right now,
- 28:24Speaker 3: I think, well, we got the snow on the ground,
- 28:26Speaker 3: we got the ice on the ground, but there's nothing
- 28:28Speaker 3: going on right now. That's going to change, as Brian
- 28:30Speaker 3: said around lunchtime, a little bit later on, that's all
- 28:33Speaker 3: going to change, and we're going to get another band
- 28:36Speaker 3: of snow that's going to come in. And we're actually
- 28:37Speaker 3: in some areas as I speak getting some freezing rain
- 28:41Speaker 3: again on top of that, so we are not out
- 28:43Speaker 3: of the woods by any stretch of the imagination. The
- 28:47Speaker 3: tree line, the trees, and the power lines are going
- 28:49Speaker 3: to continue to snap, as many of them already have.
- 28:53Speaker 3: We got, you know, thousands and thousands upon thousands of
- 28:56Speaker 3: people without power. Thankfully this was predicted well in advance,
- 29:01Speaker 3: so hopefully people were able to make their arrangements that
- 29:04Speaker 3: I don't know about you, but I'm already I'm already
- 29:08Speaker 3: ready for spring and summer. My man Joe Stevens, I

- 29:15Speaker 3: to this as junk, it's probably you know, nation his

- 33:03Speaker 3: Ly noted as a text, Let's welcome to the show,
- 33:05Speaker 3: Charleston may Or Amy Shulder, good one, Happy winter storm,
- 33:08Speaker 3: Blair mayor good one.
- 33:11Speaker 7: Yeah, Happy Monday to you as well, sir.
- 33:14Speaker 3: And I was just talking to h Brian Hughes a
- 33:16Speaker 3: couple of moments ago. No pun intended, but this storm
- 33:19Speaker 3: has been on the radar for quite some time.
- 33:22Speaker 7: That's right, you know, And and we appreciate all of
- 33:26Speaker 7: the detail that has been given to us by our
- 33:30Speaker 7: local meteorologists and obviously the National Weather Center. We keep
- 33:33Speaker 7: our eye to the sky. I mean, when I became
- 33:36Speaker 7: mayor six years ago, it was something that I knew
- 33:38Speaker 7: that I would have to monitor, having been in government
- 33:40Speaker 7: before and processes and things that you have to do.
- 33:44Speaker 7: But as as mayor of the Capital City, we've got
- 33:47Speaker 7: seventeen salt trucks that have been working around the clock
- 33:50Speaker 7: when I'm in around the clock, Dave, I mean around
- 33:52Speaker 7: the clock. These these guys have been you know, pre
- 33:56Speaker 7: treating you know, salting scrape since uh, since early on
- 34:05Speaker 7: Friday and to Saturday and yesterday all day. We planned
- 34:09Speaker 7: for this, but you know, again we plan for this,
- 34:13Speaker 7: but it's mother nature and we live in Appalachia and
- 34:18Speaker 7: so uh, you know, snow is always an issue, but
- 34:22Speaker 7: it is the ice that snarls U traffic and causes
- 34:27Speaker 7: most of our accidents and the power outages that you see.
- 34:31Speaker 7: And as Brian Duly noted, we are getting ready for
- 34:34Speaker 7: another system to come to come through and and just
- 34:39Speaker 7: for your you know, the thing that I probably can
- 34:42Speaker 7: add that Brian didn't is you know, and I can
- 34:44Speaker 7: only speak of the thirty three square miles that are
- 34:47Speaker 7: that are Charleston. We win most snow battles, We can
- 34:52Speaker 7: win most if we retreat and stay ahead of it.
- 34:56Speaker 7: But ice is a is a different beast. I mean,
- 34:58Speaker 7: there are there are snows facilities, you know, ski resorts
- 35:01Speaker 7: in the state of West Virginia that had to shut
- 35:03Speaker 7: down because of ice, and for good reason. People lose
- 35:07Speaker 7: power and salt on ice just you know, that's a losing,
- 35:13Speaker 7: losing battle.
- 35:14Speaker 3: It is, indeed, and I'll tell you how you know
- 35:17Speaker 3: it's bad is from my part of the world. When
- 35:20Speaker 3: the coal mines close, and several of them did, they
- 35:23Speaker 3: reached out to their workers in the coal mining areas
- 35:25Speaker 3: and said no work today. That tells you something right there.
- 35:30Speaker 7: Yeah. I mean, you know, my kids they love the
- 35:33Speaker 7: ski and snowboard and when they said, oh it's closed today, Well,
- 35:36Speaker 7: it's because it's power and because it's ice. Ice is
- 35:40Speaker 7: just a totally different beast. And if we get some
- 35:42Speaker 7: of the winds and we get this you know snow
- 35:45Speaker 7: system that's going to come through the branches are going
- 35:47Speaker 7: to get heavier and oh, by the way, are through.
- 35:51Speaker 7: You know, we're doing double time. It's not just the
- 35:54Speaker 7: seventeen trucks that have been salting and scraping. By the way,
- 35:57Speaker 7: anybody who is listening who knows anything about heavy equipment
- 36:01Speaker 7: or operations, they we all to have our mechanics in
- 36:06Speaker 7: because they've been working over time tonight as well. Because
- 36:10Speaker 7: you thought you scrape and you hit something and a
- 36:13Speaker 7: blade goes off, we got to bring it in. We've
- 36:16Speaker 7: got to fix it, repair it, whatever we need to
- 36:18Speaker 7: do to get it back on the road, and that
- 36:19Speaker 7: takes time, and sometimes that's a two hour downtime on
- 36:23Speaker 7: one truck. So, you know, priority roads making sure that
- 36:27Speaker 7: people can can keep essential services. You know this as
- 36:32Speaker 7: well as anyone we go hospitals out right, we've got
- 36:34Speaker 7: to make sure that that that pathway is clear. If
- 36:38Speaker 7: your road has not been assaulted or scraped, you know
- 36:41Speaker 7: we're going to get there. We have primary roads and
- 36:43Speaker 7: secondary roads and we're doing our best to keep ahead
- 36:48Speaker 7: of it. We had calls last night. I was on
- 36:51Speaker 7: the line with our director of Public Works until you know,
- 36:54Speaker 7: wee hours of the morning and then up again, and
- 36:57Speaker 7: those calls and texts coming in at four or five
- 36:59Speaker 7: to do a es so to say that you know,
- 37:02Speaker 7: it's it's a lot of folks in your city government
- 37:05Speaker 7: are working, and it's not just public grounds and public works.
- 37:09Speaker 7: It's your your ems, your police, your fire department. So
- 37:13Speaker 7: they're all They're all running on all of the cylinders
- 37:18Speaker 7: that we have and will continue to do so, by
- 37:20Speaker 7: the way, because this is this is Brian has said
- 37:23Speaker 7: to us, and other meteorologists from the Cross Region have
- 37:25Speaker 7: said to us, this is not just about snow. It's
- 37:28Speaker 7: about ice and the amount of time that it has
- 37:34Speaker 7: taken when we started to see some of these inches
- 37:36Speaker 7: of snow. This is going to be you know, up
- 37:40Speaker 7: until tomorrow. We're still going to have some challenges. People
- 37:42Speaker 7: are going to continue to be without power. We're going
- 37:45Speaker 7: to try to not only salt and scrape the roads,
- 37:48Speaker 7: but we're also trying to get trees out of the way.
- 37:50Speaker 7: I currently have one truck that is blocked in a
- 37:53Speaker 7: neighborhood right now because a tree is in front of them.
- 37:57Speaker 3: I don't mean to laugh about that, but if you're
- 37:59Speaker 3: a resident of that neighborhood, you might want to go
- 38:01Speaker 3: out and say, hey, you want to come in and
- 38:02Speaker 3: watch prices right with us or something, you know, because
- 38:04Speaker 3: you're not going anywhere for a while.
- 38:07Speaker 7: Well, you know, kudos to our team. This is you know,
- 38:10Speaker 7: this is not their first radio And let me just
- 38:13Speaker 7: give a shout out as well. You know this about me,
- 38:16Speaker 7: I don't, I don't. I don't like to drive in
- 38:19Speaker 7: the heck, I don't like to drive when it's sunny
- 38:21Speaker 7: in seventy five out let alone when it's raining, or
- 38:25Speaker 7: certainly when it's swing. These are folks who are very
- 38:27Speaker 7: good at what they do. We practiced these routes. By
- 38:29Speaker 7: the way, we practiced these routes almost just as you're
- 38:33Speaker 7: getting ready for a competition, because it is a high
- 38:36Speaker 7: stress time for our drivers. They're on hillsides, cliffs, welcome
- 38:43Speaker 7: to the Mountain state. So they have to be very
- 38:45Speaker 7: good at what they do. They know when to hit
- 38:47Speaker 7: the button, I've been in the trucks many many times,
- 38:50Speaker 7: when to hit the salt, when it sprays, when de scraped.
- 38:54Speaker 7: It is a process and so we do a lot
- 38:58Speaker 7: of training and they do a lot of dry run.
- 39:00Speaker 7: So when people say I saw your trucks out at sixty,
- 39:04Speaker 7: why do you have your trucks out, Well, it was
- 39:06Speaker 7: probably a training run. It was probably a time in
- 39:08Speaker 7: which we were either teaching somebody if they were going
- 39:11Speaker 7: on a new route, what roads you have to hit.
- 39:13Speaker 7: And also we take in considerations shortly when people say, oh,
- 39:17Speaker 7: bridges free, Yeah, we do. We keep an eye to
- 39:20Speaker 7: our bridges in those corners and slick spots where we
- 39:23Speaker 7: see accidents happen. There is a method to our madness.
- 39:26Speaker 7: It sometimes doesn't look pretty out there, but I promise
- 39:29Speaker 7: you these folks know what they're doing and they're working.
- 39:32Speaker 7: They're tail feathers off.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Talking to Charleston maryor Amy Schuler, Good one to Dave

- 39:47Speaker 3: I got a text for you, says why doesn't the
- 39:50Speaker 3: city ever open the Civic Center as a warming center
- 39:53Speaker 3: for those who lose power, homeless and frustrate animals. There's
- 39:55Speaker 3: plenty of room and one location people could easily volunteer.
- 40:01Speaker 7: Well, it's a great question, and let me go ahead
- 40:03Speaker 7: and say, we certainly have utilized our coliseum and convention
- 40:07Speaker 7: Center during times of need. If you recall, and I
- 40:09Speaker 7: think you were there with me on several occasions during COVID,
- 40:13Speaker 7: that was our main use of the coliseum and convention Center.
- 40:16Speaker 7: We fortunately have amazing partners in the city who help
- 40:20Speaker 7: us with warming centers and warming stations. Breen is one
- 40:24Speaker 7: of our centers that we work with, the Canaw Valley Collective,
- 40:28Speaker 7: Tracy Strickland and Margaret O'Neill with the United Way, our
- 40:33Speaker 7: wonderful partners with us. We have had a warming station
- 40:37Speaker 7: open and it will continue to be because oh yeah,
- 40:41Speaker 7: by the way, this is not going away any time
- 40:45Speaker 7: anytime soon.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Now, even after I mean, you know, as Brian said,
- 40:49Speaker 3: you know, the snow was going to start to wind
- 40:50Speaker 3: down by the end of the day, but we still
- 40:52Speaker 3: got several hours of well little freezing rain and then
- 40:55Speaker 3: some snow. We got a couple more inches of snow
- 40:57Speaker 3: on the way today. But even after that is head
- 41:00Speaker 3: into let's say, the overnight hours tomorrow and over the
- 41:02Speaker 3: next couple of days before we get ready for the
- 41:04Speaker 3: next system. The big one's going to be well, the
- 41:06Speaker 3: next big one's going to be coming in this weekend,
- 41:08Speaker 3: they tell us. But it's you know, we're talking about
- 41:11Speaker 3: windshiels at zero or below high temperatures in the twenties
- 41:15Speaker 3: and many areas, So that snow, as I said earlier, Mayor,
- 41:19Speaker 3: that snow that's out there right now, you'll be looking
- 41:21Speaker 3: at it for another couple of weeks and the temperatures
- 41:23Speaker 3: aren't going up anytime soon.
- 41:25Speaker 7: Yeah, And those arming centers will be open, they will
- 41:28Speaker 7: be open. And but if you do, you know, as always,
- 41:32Speaker 7: we're you know, Mayor's office is still working today, Tina,
- 41:36Speaker 7: Andrew Matthew and I are City Manager Ben Michelle. I
- 41:39Speaker 7: have already been on the phone with Madame President Becky
- 41:42Speaker 7: Sepperley this morning. If you if you still need us,
- 41:45Speaker 7: please call and and let me also say this. We're
- 41:49Speaker 7: you know, we're getting calls and I'm getting a lot
- 41:51Speaker 7: of texts of hey, I haven't heard from my neighbor.
- 41:55Speaker 7: Hey can you if you want us to check on somebody.
- 41:58Speaker 7: Our EOC is open, Our Emergency Services Center is open
- 42:04Speaker 7: if you want to call, and you know, if it's
- 42:08Speaker 7: an emergency, by the way, please dial nine one one.
- 42:11Speaker 7: We still want you to dial. We still want you
- 42:13Speaker 7: to dial nine one one, but if you want us
- 42:15Speaker 7: to check on someone, please make sure that you reach out.
- 42:20Speaker 7: We want to do it, We're good at it, and
- 42:23Speaker 7: by the way, we want to do it for you.
- 42:26Speaker 7: We don't want people out on the room if you
- 42:28Speaker 7: don't have to be. I know that. People say way,
- 42:30Speaker 7: there's many of us who have to be. I get it,
- 42:33Speaker 7: and that's why we are working for you to make
- 42:36Speaker 7: sure our roads are clear and people stay off the
- 42:39Speaker 7: roads so you can get to your job. God all
- 42:42Speaker 7: three of my answer nurses. God bless our nurses, our physicians,
- 42:47Speaker 7: our police fire EMS team, and certainly our drivers who
- 42:53Speaker 7: have many of them are just getting a couple of
- 42:57Speaker 7: quick hours of sleep now because they're going to have
- 43:00Speaker 7: to be have to be out again.
- 43:03Speaker 3: Before I do. You know, normally we have you on
- 43:05Speaker 3: for the full twenty minutes, but I know you've got
- 43:07Speaker 3: other things to do today, so we'll cut you loose
- 43:09Speaker 3: a little bit earlier. You told me yesterday when we
- 43:11Speaker 3: were talking that you're in between weather meetings this morning,
- 43:13Speaker 3: and I do appreciate you being here. I want to
- 43:15Speaker 3: move away from the weather on a couple of things
- 43:17Speaker 3: you were scheduled to do your State of the City
- 43:21Speaker 3: addressed as part of City Council that has been postponed.
- 43:24Speaker 3: I understand until Thursday night, Is that right?
- 43:27Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right. I mean all hands on deck that
- 43:30Speaker 7: can wait. What can't wait are getting people to their homes,
- 43:35Speaker 7: offices and schools, so that takes priority. As I mentioned,
- 43:40Speaker 7: I was talking to Council President Becky separately, Matthew Sutton,
- 43:43Speaker 7: our chief of staff, was on the phone with our
- 43:46Speaker 7: Chairman of Finance, Joe Jenkins. We have postponed our meeting
- 43:50Speaker 7: until Thursday. We'll do not only our city Council, our
- 43:55Speaker 7: business we got just like federal government, state government, simple government.
- 44:01Speaker 7: We're working, we're not not working. But we're going to
- 44:05Speaker 7: postpone that seat council meeting until Thursday because we do
- 44:09Speaker 7: have action items we need to take up, and of
- 44:12Speaker 7: course our State of the City will happen at that
- 44:15Speaker 7: time as well on Thursday, but more pressing issues need
- 44:19Speaker 7: to be taken care of than that at this point.
- 44:22Speaker 3: And I do want to mention that you're going to
- 44:23Speaker 3: have an opening on City Council because Councilman Sam Minardis
- 44:26Speaker 3: has tendered his resignation quickly talk about that.
- 44:29Speaker 7: Yeah, Sam Minardi is just a star. And if anybody
- 44:33Speaker 7: knows Sam, you know that he is family and community first.
- 44:37Speaker 7: He has been such an amazing asset to the City
- 44:41Speaker 7: of Charleston, and so while I will miss working with him,
- 44:45Speaker 7: he was always the voice of reason right if you
- 44:47Speaker 7: if you wanted to question yourself and ask somebody's opinion
- 44:50Speaker 7: of what they really thought, he'd give it to you
- 44:52Speaker 7: in a calm, clear, collective voice. And he was always
- 44:58Speaker 7: on the always on the money. I am excited to
- 45:02Speaker 7: welcome in a new member of council, Shirley. And oh,
- 45:06Speaker 7: by the way, this will be my council member as
- 45:08Speaker 7: well in the ward in which in the ward in
- 45:11Speaker 7: which I live. It'll be special. We'll make that announcement
- 45:15Speaker 7: and we'll do that appointment on Sturge Day day.
- 45:17Speaker 3: All right, Mayor, a good one. I appreciate you being here.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Be safe, keep doing what you folks are doing out there,
- 45:23Speaker 3: and we will talk again soon. You'll have city council again.
- 45:26Speaker 3: That's been moved, including your State of the City address.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Wel Thursday, and I appreciate you being here. Maya, thanks a.
- 45:30Speaker 7: Lot, appreciate you Dick.
