Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / How to Acquire Knowledge of the Action of Vital and Mental Beings and Forces Upon our Lives
Transcript
- 0:01Since we cannot easily observe vital beings or mental beings
- 0:05operating on their respective planes to influence actions in
- 0:09our existence, and since we maintain a skeptical attitude
- 0:14about things which cannot be observed or measured, we find it
- 0:17difficult to accept the existence of conscious, vital or
- 0:21mental beings or entities who either work to aid or oppose our
- 0:26existence, growth, and development.
- 0:30It is also a well recognized truth that the senses and the
- 0:34mind have a very limited frame of action, so that things that
- 0:38occur above or below our field of perception, while still
- 0:42existent, are not perceived or understood.
- 0:46Thus, the sense organs and the mind are not the proper
- 0:50instruments to explore and understand the vital and mental
- 0:54realms outside the frame of their normal active capacity.
- 0:59This brings us to the question of how we know what we know.
- 1:03We trust our external senses, but it has now been decisively
- 1:08proven that the senses, as well as our interpretation of
- 1:12perceptions of those senses, can be faulty, misled, or outright
- 1:18wrong. Multiple people observing the
- 1:21same event from different angles frequently report different
- 1:24perceptions with AI deep fakes. In today's world and with
- 1:30programs such as Photoshop, what we believe is real is often
- 1:34simply a manipulated or falsified version of facts.
- 1:40Knowledge based on the external sense organs is therefore
- 1:43subject to question in the life divine.
- 1:47Shri Robindo describes the different ways of knowing with
- 1:51the reliance on the outer sense organs as being incomplete due
- 1:55to it being knowledge of what appears to be separate objects.
- 2:01Separate of knowledge is always incomplete, inadequate, and
- 2:06limited. If we rely solely on the
- 2:09testimony of others, we are still subject to their
- 2:13potentially faulty observation or interpretation.
- 2:17To the extent that we appreciate the bona fides and intelligence
- 2:21of individuals who have deeply immersed themselves in a
- 2:25subject, we have a greater degree of confidence,
- 2:28potentially, than simply relying on the random interpretations of
- 2:33untrained individuals. Even there, we frequently ask
- 2:38for some kind of proof or evidence, and as scientists have
- 2:42developed the scientific method of knowledge, we expect that
- 2:46repeated observations should be not only verifiable and
- 2:50measurable, but also reproducible.
- 2:55We then come to knowledge obtained through inference of an
- 2:58effect that must have a 'cause. We treat invisible energy such
- 3:02as radiation, electricity, et cetera, by judging the effect
- 3:07and then developing tools to measure the force that is at
- 3:11work. Thus we believe in invisible
- 3:15things that can be identified through their impact and which
- 3:18yield measurable results. All of this is preparatory to
- 3:24the ultimate form of knowledge, which is knowledge by identity.
- 3:29In the end, we must find a way to rely on what we experience to
- 3:33filter out the effect of dogma, propaganda, and the influence of
- 3:38desire or fear, or other factors which can distort the perception
- 3:44or the interpretation. We come then to the science of
- 3:49inner psychological study and growth.
- 3:52Swami Vivekananda, in his Lectures on Raja Yoga, provides
- 3:57one method for gaining knowledge inwardly, and that is to bring
- 4:01the mind stuff to a level of stillness that we can observe
- 4:05closely. This discipline starts with
- 4:08gaining mastery over various psychological reactive states
- 4:13through control of desire in any of its forms and through
- 4:17development of a quiet, harmless and balanced seat.
- 4:22When ripples in the mind stuff arise, we can observe where they
- 4:27came from, what impact they are having, and what they try to do
- 4:31within us. Thus we turn the mind itself
- 4:35into a sensitive measuring device for the action of
- 4:39external energies that impact us.
- 4:43When we match up our inward experience through some process
- 4:46such as this, with the force and its impact that is reaching us,
- 4:51it becomes easier to develop a reliable sense of what is taking
- 4:55place behind the scenes, so to speak.
- 4:58When we then correlate our own experience with that of others
- 5:02who are otherwise trusted guides or leaders, we have a higher
- 5:06degree of certitude which we can apply to an understanding of the
- 5:11beings and forces trying to influence us for good.
- 5:15Or I'll It is at such a stage that we can begin to fit
- 5:20together the pieces of the puzzle that is our incapacity to
- 5:25grasp the fact of our consciousness and the general
- 5:28human aspiration with the apparently inconceant nature
- 5:34within which we exist. Sri Aurobindo writes, quote.
- 5:40This is certain that when we go back into ourselves, very deep
- 5:44away from the surface appearance, we find that the
- 5:48mind, heart and sensational being of man are moved by forces
- 5:53not under his own control, and that he can become an instrument
- 5:57in the hands of energies of a cosmic character without knowing
- 6:02the origin of his actions. It is by stepping back from the
- 6:06physical surface into his inner being and subliminal
- 6:10consciousness that he becomes directly aware of them and is
- 6:14able to know directly and deal with their action upon him.
- 6:19He grows aware of interventions which seek to lead him in One
- 6:22Direction or another of suggestions and impulsions which
- 6:27had got disguised themselves as original movements of his own
- 6:31mind, and against which he had to battle.
- 6:35He can realize that he is not a conscious creature, inexplicably
- 6:39produced in an unconscious world out of a seed of inconscient
- 6:43matter, and moving about in an obscure self ignorance, but an
- 6:48embodied soul through whose action cosmic nature is seeking
- 6:53to fulfill itself. The living ground of a vast
- 6:57debate between a darkness of ignorance, out of which it
- 7:01emerges here, and a light of knowledge which is growing
- 7:05upwards towards an unforeseen termination.
- 7:09The forces which seek to move him and among them the forces of
- 7:13good and evil, present themselves as powers of
- 7:17universal nature, but they seem to belong not only to the
- 7:21physical universe, but to planes of life and mind beyond it.
