Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Vincent McAviney: UK Correspondent on the sentencing of Axel Rudakubana for the killing of three children at a Taylor Swift themed dance class
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Joined now by Vincent Makerviny, our UK and Europe correspondent.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Good morning, Vincent, Good morning. The Southport killer has been sentenced.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Yeah, in the past hour he's been sentenced. This is
- 0:12Speaker 2: Axel Ruda Cabana, who you might remember last July killed
- 0:16Speaker 2: three young girls and attempted to murder ten other people
- 0:20Speaker 2: and injured many when he attacked a tailors themed dance
- 0:24Speaker 2: class just at the start of the school summer holidays.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It was due to be a long trial, but when
- 0:29Speaker 2: he appeared in court for the first day earlier in
- 0:32Speaker 2: the week, he changed his plea to guilty and today
- 0:36Speaker 2: there has been the sentencing of this now. He himself
- 0:39Speaker 2: acted out in court this morning, yelling saying that he
- 0:42Speaker 2: was unwell and that he wasn't being looked after. He
- 0:45Speaker 2: was taken out of court for the disruption and it
- 0:47Speaker 2: was felt he couldn't be brought back in for the
- 0:49Speaker 2: reading of the sentences. But he is received. Because of
- 0:52Speaker 2: his age, he cannot be given a whole life sentence,
- 0:55Speaker 2: the most strict category in the UK. He was just
- 0:58Speaker 2: under eighteen, but he's been given a minimum of fifty
- 1:01Speaker 2: two years in jail, which is the longest jail sentence
- 1:05Speaker 2: for someone under the age of eighteen, we think that
- 1:07Speaker 2: has ever been handed down at that point. He would,
- 1:10Speaker 2: you know, face potentially getting to a parole hearing, but
- 1:14Speaker 2: the judge has indicated it's incredibly unlikely he will ever
- 1:17Speaker 2: be released.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Vincent. How is the US responding to President Trump suggesting
- 1:22Speaker 1: that Europe needs to focus on increasing its defense to
- 1:26Speaker 1: deal with.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Pousan Well, as we speak right now, Donald Trump is
- 1:29Speaker 2: addressing the World Economic Forum in Davas, and he has
- 1:33Speaker 2: been reading Europe somewhat of a riot act, saying that
- 1:35Speaker 2: they're still not contributing enough to NATO, that they've got
- 1:40Speaker 2: too many tariffs, that they need to start making their
- 1:42Speaker 2: products in the United States, and sort of saying that
- 1:46Speaker 2: they've gone after too many US companies, too much regulation,
- 1:48Speaker 2: particularly citing the tech companies, of course, which he has
- 1:51Speaker 2: a close relationship with. But the other thing that he's
- 1:54Speaker 2: said is that he is blaming. He seems to accept
- 1:59Speaker 2: that Vladimir Puton is to blame for the war in Ukraine,
- 2:02Speaker 2: that illegal invasion. He's warned him that Russia could face
- 2:05Speaker 2: more tariffs and it's plutin to de escalate it. So
- 2:08Speaker 2: it does seem like some of the overtures that Vladimis
- 2:12Speaker 2: Lensky has made over the past couple of years to
- 2:14Speaker 2: Donald Trump have worked to secure his favor, and the
- 2:17Speaker 2: Kremlin has responded saying they're ready for a quote mutually
- 2:20Speaker 2: respectful dialogue on the issue of Ukraine. So we do
- 2:24Speaker 2: believe that behind the scenes, the White House and the
- 2:27Speaker 2: Kremlin are working on some sort of summit between Trump
- 2:30Speaker 2: and Putin, But we might say as well, we might
- 2:34Speaker 2: well also expect some proper dialogue later this year, perhaps
- 2:38Speaker 2: a conference or meeting of the three leaders as they
- 2:41Speaker 2: try to negotiate a ceasefire settlement.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Vincent macavenny, thank you so much for your time. For
