Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / EP 41 - The Prison of Perfection
Transcript
- 0:00There's a kind of prison that doesn't look like one at all.
- 0:03It doesn't have bars, It doesn't have guards.
- 0:07It doesn't have locked doors. From the outside, it looks
- 0:12impressive. It looks responsible, It looks
- 0:16admirable. But on the inside, it's
- 0:20exhausting. It's the prison of perfection.
- 0:25It's the pressure to always be OK, the need to have all the
- 0:31right answers, the fear of letting people see you struggle,
- 0:36the belief that growth means flawlessness and faith means
- 0:42never falling apart. And the cruel irony is that the
- 0:48very thing that we think makes us strong is often the thing
- 0:52that's keeping us stuck. Today we're talking about
- 0:56perfection. Not the kind that inspires
- 0:59excellence, but the kind that suffocates honesty.
- 1:03The kind that convinces us that we must perform instead of be
- 1:08present. The kind that turns faith into
- 1:11image management and healing into something that we postpone.
- 1:18Welcome to Unmasked, the podcast where we take off the filters we
- 1:21hide behind and step in the kind of honesty that leads to real
- 1:25freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:28Farnsworth. This is episode 2 of our
- 1:31miniseries From Hiding to Helping.
- 1:33And today we're talking about something that traps more people
- 1:37than they realize the the prison, prison of perfection.
- 1:45Last episode, we talked about the fear of being found out.
- 1:49Today we're naming one of the biggest reasons that fear stays
- 1:52alive, the belief that we have to keep it all together in order
- 1:57to be accepted, trusted, or used by God.
- 2:02Let's talk about how perfection becomes a cage, why does it feel
- 2:08safer than honesty, and how God does His deepest work when we
- 2:14finally stop performing. You see, perfection is sneaky
- 2:20because it rarely announces itself as a problem.
- 2:23It often shows up disguised as discipline, responsibility,
- 2:27maturity, or spiritual commitment.
- 2:30It sounds like wanting to do the right thing.
- 2:33It feels like striving for excellence.
- 2:36And on the surface, it looks like something God would
- 2:38applaud. But freedom, when rooted in fear
- 2:42instead of freedom, becomes something else entirely.
- 2:47It becomes a mask when perfection takes hold.
- 2:52You stop asking honest questions.
- 2:54You stop admitting uncertainty, You stop sharing struggles until
- 3:00they're already resolved. You stop letting people see the
- 3:04process, and you only show them the outcome.
- 3:08Slowly, subtly, your life turns into a highlight reel curated to
- 3:14protect your reputation. And the dangerous thing about
- 3:18that is this You can look spiritually healthy while being
- 3:24emotionally exhausted. Perfectionism teaches us that
- 3:29being valued requires being impressive, that being respected
- 3:34requires being composed, that being trusted requires being
- 3:40consistent without cracks. So we work harder, we try
- 3:45longer, we pray quieter, and we struggle privately.
- 3:52We learn how to manage perception instead of inviting
- 3:55transformation. Many people don't realize this,
- 3:59but perfectionism and hiding are deeply connected.
- 4:05When you believe that you have to be flawless, honesty becomes
- 4:09risky. Vulnerability feels
- 4:12irresponsible. Admitting weakness feels like
- 4:16failure. And so you don't just hide your
- 4:19sin, you hide your humanity. You hide doubt.
- 4:24You hide fear. You hide fatigue.
- 4:29You hide disappointment, You hide grief, you hide confusion.
- 4:37You do this not because you don't want help, but because you
- 4:41believe that needing help disqualifies you.
- 4:45And over time, that belief builds walls.
- 4:49You may still serve, you may still lead, you still show up.
- 4:55But inside, something begins to shrink.
- 5:00The presence of perfection is built brick by brick with
- 5:04expectations, some placed on us by others, but many are placed
- 5:09on us by ourselves. Expectations that say you should
- 5:13know better by now, You should be stronger by now, you
- 5:18shouldn't still be struggling with this, You should not need
- 5:23help at this stage of your faith.
- 5:27Sound familiar? Those expectations don't come
- 5:33from God, but they masquerade as spiritual maturity.
- 5:38Scripture paints a very different picture.
- 5:41The Apostle Paul, one of the most influential leaders in the
- 5:45early church, openly admitted his weaknesses.
- 5:49He didn't hide it. He didn't minimize it.
- 5:53He didn't pretend that it didn't exist.
- 5:56Instead, he talked about it openly and honestly and
- 6:00repeatedly. He said that God's power is made
- 6:04perfect not in strength, but in weakness.
- 6:09That's not poetic language. That's a direct contradiction to
- 6:13perfectionism. See, God does not wait for you
- 6:17to be flawless before he works. He works in the middle of your
- 6:21flaws. He doesn't need your
- 6:24performance. He wants your surrender.
- 6:29But perfectionism tells us the opposite.
- 6:32It tells us that we need to clean ourselves up before coming
- 6:35to God. It tells us that we need to fix
- 6:38the mess before anyone else sees it.
- 6:43It tells us that our value is tied to how well we manage our
- 6:46image. And then you believe that
- 6:50ministry. And when you believe that
- 6:54ministry becomes exhausting. You feel pressure to represent
- 6:59something instead of simply reflect God's grace.
- 7:04You feel responsible not just for your behavior, but for
- 7:08everyone's perception of your faith.
- 7:11You begin to feel failure, not because it hurts, but because it
- 7:16might expose you. And that fear keeps you from
- 7:21being honest. Let me speak generally, but
- 7:26truthfully at the same time from my own experience.
- 7:30You see, there was a season where I knew exactly how to help
- 7:33others. I had the right words to say.
- 7:36I had the right encouragement. I had insight to share.
- 7:41I had compassion. And yet there were parts of my
- 7:44own life that I had kept hidden because I believed that
- 7:48admitting struggle would undermine my credibility.
- 7:53I didn't want to disappoint people who trusted me.
- 7:57I didn't want to appear inconsistent.
- 8:00I didn't want to give anyone a reason to doubt my faith or my
- 8:04leadership. And so I kept pushing forward,
- 8:09telling myself that once I got past the struggle, then I could
- 8:12talk about it. But healing doesn't happen on
- 8:15the other side of silence. It happens on the other side of
- 8:19honesty. Perfectionism delays healing
- 8:25because it insists that transformation must be tidy.
- 8:30And transformation is not a tidy thing, because God does his best
- 8:36work in the middle of the mess. He meets us while we're still
- 8:42figuring things out. He uses people who are in
- 8:46process, not people who pretend that they're finished.
- 8:53Jesus didn't call perfect disciples, He called imperfect
- 8:57people and transformed them over time.
- 9:02He didn't wait for Peter to stop failing before trusting him with
- 9:06responsibility. He didn't remove Thomas from the
- 9:12group because he doubted. He didn't shame people into
- 9:16growth. He invited them into
- 9:19relationship. Perfectionism, on the other
- 9:26hand, isolates. It keeps you from asking for
- 9:30help because you think that you should already have it figured
- 9:33out. It keeps you from community
- 9:36because you're afraid of being exposed.
- 9:39It keeps you from healing because you believe that healing
- 9:42must come before honesty instead of after it.
- 9:48And the result is often burnout. Burnout doesn't always come from
- 9:54doing too much. Sometimes it comes from hiding
- 9:57too much, From carrying the weight of being OK all the time,
- 10:04from pretending that you're stronger than you are, from
- 10:08believing your weakness is a liability instead of a doorway,
- 10:15from saying you're fine when you're really not.
- 10:19I encourage you to drop that 4 letter word from your
- 10:22vocabulary. Stop saying you're fine.
- 10:30Admit that you're struggling. Admit that you're not OK.
- 10:36Take the mask off because eventually the prison of
- 10:40perfection becomes uncomfortable enough that something has to
- 10:45give. You're either numb to yourself,
- 10:50you withdraw, you disengage, or you finally admit the truth.
- 10:56And that moment, the moment that you realize that you can't keep
- 11:00performing, is not failure. It's an invitation.
- 11:06An invitation to freedom. It's God saying that you don't
- 11:11have to live like this. Jesus tells us that God gives
- 11:18grace to the humble. Humility isn't self hatred, it's
- 11:24honesty. It's agreeing with reality.
- 11:29It's saying I don't have it all together and I don't have to
- 11:33pretend that I do. Grace flows where honesty
- 11:39exists. Perfection blocks grace because
- 11:43it insists on self-reliance. Humility invites grace because
- 11:49it admits it. So the question becomes this.
- 11:56What would happen if you stopped managing your image and started
- 12:00telling the truth? What would happen if you allowed
- 12:05people to see you in the process instead of only after the
- 12:10breakthrough? What would happen if your faith
- 12:14became something that you lived honestly instead of something
- 12:18that you maintained carefully? You don't lose influence when
- 12:25you admit weakness. You gain credibility.
- 12:30You don't lose respect when you stop pretending.
- 12:33You gain trust. You don't lose purpose when you
- 12:38acknowledge struggle. You make room for God's power.
- 12:43The prison of perfection tells you that your weakness
- 12:47disqualifies you, but the gospel tells you that your weakness is
- 12:53where God meets you. And the path out of that prison
- 12:57isn't dramatic. It's simple.
- 13:01It starts with a shift in posture.
- 13:05Instead of asking, how do I look?
- 13:08You ask, am I being honest? Instead of asking, what will
- 13:13people think, you ask, what is God inviting me into?
- 13:19Instead of asking, how do I maintain this image, you ask
- 13:24where do I need grace? And that shift changes
- 13:29everything. You don't have to confess
- 13:30everything to everyone. That's not wisdom.
- 13:35But you do have to stop pretending somewhere.
- 13:39You do have to let somebody see the real you.
- 13:44You do have to give God access to the parts that you've been
- 13:49managing instead of surrendering.
- 13:52Because perfection doesn't produce transformation, honesty
- 13:58does. As we close today, I want to
- 14:02invite you into a gentle but courageous practice this week.
- 14:08Pay attention to where perfection shows up in your
- 14:11life. Notice where you feel pressured
- 14:14to perform, to have answers, to appear strong, to hide struggle.
- 14:21And when you notice it, don't shame yourself, Just acknowledge
- 14:25it. And then I want you to ask this
- 14:28simple question. What would honesty look like
- 14:31here? Maybe it's an honest prayer.
- 14:37Maybe it's an honest conversation.
- 14:39Maybe it's simply admitting to yourself that you're tired of
- 14:44pretending you don't have to break out of the prison all at
- 14:48once, you just have to unlock the door.
- 14:53Next time, we're going to talk about what happens when honesty
- 14:56starts to feel costly. When God doesn't just invite us
- 15:01to stop hiding, but calls us to speak, to share, to step
- 15:07forward, and to let our story serve someone else.
- 15:13Our next episode is called The Call to Courage.
- 15:18Until then, remember this. God is not asking you to be
- 15:22perfect. He's asking you to be honest.
- 15:26And the moment that you stop performing is often the moment
- 15:32the real transformation begins. So take off the mask and start
- 15:37living. God bless you.
