- 0:21Speaker 1: The Lost Wife of Bealalese. One time the farmer of
- 0:25Speaker 1: Bellalese married a beautiful young wife, and they were thinking
- 0:29Speaker 1: the world of one another. But before long she disappeared.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Some persons said that she was dead, and others that
- 0:36Speaker 1: she was taken by the little people. Bales mourned for
- 0:40Speaker 1: her with a heavy heart and looked for her from
- 0:42Speaker 1: point of air to the calf, but in the end,
- 0:45Speaker 1: not finding her, he married another wife. The one was
- 0:49Speaker 1: not beautiful, but there was some money at her. Soon
- 0:54Speaker 1: after the marriage, his first wife appeared to bellale one
- 0:57Speaker 1: night and said to him, my man, my men, I
- 1:01Speaker 1: was taken away by the little people, and I lived
- 1:03Speaker 1: with them near to you. I can be set free
- 1:06Speaker 1: if you will, But do what I tell you. Tell
- 1:09Speaker 1: me quick, said Bellallees. We'll be riding through Bellilees barn
- 1:13Speaker 1: at midnight on Friday said she We'll be going in
- 1:17Speaker 1: on one door and out on another. I'll be riding
- 1:20Speaker 1: behind one of the men on horseback. You'll sweep the
- 1:23Speaker 1: barn clean, and mind there's not one straw left on
- 1:26Speaker 1: the floor. Hold of my bridle rein, hold it fast,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and I shall be free. When the night came, Bellallees
- 1:33Speaker 1: took a basom and swept the barn floor so clean
- 1:36Speaker 1: that not one's back was left on it. Then he
- 1:40Speaker 1: waited in the dark. At midnight, the barn doors opened wide.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Sweet music was heard, and in through the open door
- 1:47Speaker 1: came a fine company of little people in green jackets
- 1:51Speaker 1: and red caps, riding fine horses. On the last horse
- 1:55Speaker 1: sitting behind the little fellow, bellily saw his first wife,
- 1:59Speaker 1: as pretty as a p and as young as when
- 2:01Speaker 1: she left him. He seized hold of her bridle rein,
- 2:05Speaker 1: but she was shaken from side to side like a
- 2:07Speaker 1: leaf on a tree, and he was not able to
- 2:10Speaker 1: hold her. As she went out through the door, she
- 2:13Speaker 1: stretched out her right hand and pointed to a bushel
- 2:15Speaker 1: on the corner of the barn and called out in
- 2:17Speaker 1: a sad voice, there's been a straw put under the
- 2:21Speaker 1: bushel For that reason, you couldn't hold me, and you've
- 2:24Speaker 1: done with me for ever. The second wife had heard
- 2:28Speaker 1: what had passed, and had hidden the straw and turned
- 2:30Speaker 1: the bushel upside down so that it would not be seen.
- 2:34Speaker 1: The young wife was never heard of any more. End
- 2:39Speaker 1: of Chapter seventeen. Recording by Franciska Power
