- 0:26Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:29Only guest in the first hour will be toward the bottom of the
- 0:31hour. A friend, Adam Emmenecker, will
- 0:33join us. We will preview.
- 0:36The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament gets underway on
- 0:38Thursday with two of the Iowa teams in action on Thursday.
- 0:42Eminecker will be in Saint Louis and will pick his brain on what
- 0:46he thinks is going to happen over the Thursday, Friday,
- 0:49Saturday, in the championship game on Sunday with Adam
- 0:52Eminecker, former player of the year in the Valley, coming up
- 0:54here at 12:30. Doko Pizza, a couple of
- 0:57locations, the original on Forest Ave. just a stone's throw
- 1:00from the Knapp Center and also in Ankeny, the Shops at Prairie
- 1:05Trail. Hour number two, Scott
- 1:07Dockerman, he is back from Indianapolis.
- 1:09We will do some combine stuff with Doc.
- 1:12We're also going to talk about his lengthy piece that published
- 1:15yesterday as he put his college basketball knowledge back to the
- 1:20test yesterday, ranking the top 50 rivalries in college
- 1:24basketball. Of course, Duke, Carolina and
- 1:26numero Uno, but he went through the other 40 nines, so we'll do
- 1:29that with Doc. A couple of other things as
- 1:31well. Look forward to catching up with
- 1:32Scott Dockerman. Haven't been able to do that in
- 1:35the last couple of weeks. And then Bill Bender will put a
- 1:37bow on the show Bill by writes for The Sporting News.
- 1:40We'll do both with Bill. We'll do football, we'll do
- 1:43basketball. Trent will make some picks on a
- 1:45much more broader version of men's basketball schedule
- 1:49tonight and see how he can do with that Circus sports
- 1:54sponsors. That comes up about 10 minutes
- 1:56before too Well, what started out to be a very, you know,
- 1:59promising night going into at 8:00 big spot, big Monday Duke
- 2:03game was over. Not going to push it back in the
- 2:04late 20. Tried to search for the game on
- 2:07the ESPN app, whatever the hell that is.
- 2:10Started on time eight O 7 tip and went downhill from there
- 2:13early. Both teams just couldn't hit the
- 2:15broadside of the barn. But but Iowa State falls got
- 2:18embarrassed again second time in what, 48 hours that this team
- 2:22has fallen. They are not the playing their
- 2:23best basketball, putting it mildly.
- 2:25And I believe it's fatigue as we talk about this team every
- 2:29single year. The March collapse that we see,
- 2:32sure, they put it back together. But when you're starting to see
- 2:36year after year after year, this team seemingly wears down.
- 2:39And guest after guest after guest, this team practice is
- 2:43harder than I've ever seen. You should come to practice and
- 2:46watch how Steam practices. Maybe you ought to, you know,
- 2:49pull back the range just to. I'm not saying it happens every
- 2:52day, but just maybe that's part and parcel of the reason for
- 2:56these collapses. Am I nuts?
- 2:58You're not nuts at all. And right at the top of my notes
- 3:01from the game. Tired, they're legs.
- 3:06How many times have I brought up this year when we're talking
- 3:09about why this season can be different, why this is going to
- 3:12be the team that does breakthrough, that gets to an
- 3:14Elite 8, maybe even a Final Four when we talked about it because
- 3:18of the depth that they use throughout the course of the
- 3:19season. But yet again, even playing more
- 3:22guys, more minutes off the bench, we're still seeing once
- 3:25again, a very tired basketball team.
- 3:28And outside of the year 2 years ago, the Sweet 16 lost to
- 3:31Illinois. That is the only season that
- 3:34they haven't had pretty significant either February's or
- 3:36Marches where they have really struggled down the stretch and
- 3:39it's the same thing. It is a team that looks dead
- 3:42tired. Last night they looked awful.
- 3:44There was no lift from the. Arizona's good.
- 3:46No way. Right?
- 3:47Arizona's good. Let's put.
- 3:48That there, yes, yes, right. They're not just good, they're
- 3:50great. Yeah, that is a great basketball
- 3:52team. One of.
- 3:53Three or four that that you. Could make a case they can cut
- 3:56down the. Nets, absolutely.
- 3:57They are that talented, that good.
- 3:59But we were also talking about Iowa State.
- 4:01If it would have, should have. Everything goes way.
- 4:03Maybe they're one of those teams.
- 4:04Well, not anymore. I would be surprised if this
- 4:06team gets on the first weekend. This team has that look to me.
- 4:09They look like the team that lost Ole Miss and got blown out
- 4:12of the building last year. It is a very similar one.
- 4:15The good news is you got time. You got a cakewalk, you would
- 4:17think against Arizona State get right.
- 4:20Who knows what happens in Kansas City?
- 4:22Hopefully you get knocked out early.
- 4:24Right, and you're not alone. And Ivan, I had two different
- 4:26Cyclone friends in my life say the exact same thing last night.
- 4:30I hope they want and done in Casey now.
- 4:32One and done means losing to a kind of bad team.
- 4:34I don't know if you want to quite do that.
- 4:36So who would it? Be at this point, is it Central
- 4:39Central Florida on the bottom part of the bracket?
- 4:41UCF down there? Who would be up top?
- 4:44So let me bring up the Big 12 here quickly and get that in
- 4:49front to die. Here we go.
- 4:51So if everything projects out, they would play the winner of
- 4:54Baylor, Arizona State. OK, so probably advance the
- 4:57bears one would assume. And that's not a great loss.
- 5:00You know Baylor's better than the record is, I think.
- 5:04They've had a bad year, they've had it down here.
- 5:06That I don't know if it's going to be a seed loss, but if it's
- 5:08on the fringes it's certainly not going to help.
- 5:10Well, do you think there are two, see here today, as we said,
- 5:13I don't either. No, no.
- 5:14I think they're clinging two or three at this point.
- 5:16I would think so too. And you know the the problem
- 5:18with bracket matrix is I do wish they had a way.
- 5:22Update the damn thing. Well, because not everybody
- 5:24updates because they have all the bracketologist, the hundred
- 5:26hundred and something that are not their fault.
- 5:28You're right, it's the bracketologist.
- 5:29It's the bracketologist that don't have it updated every day.
- 5:32And because of that, I wish there was a way to sort it, the
- 5:34ones that have updated a day later, because looking through
- 5:37here, almost everybody is from yesterday before the game
- 5:40happened where Iowa State was the last #2 seed going into last
- 5:43night. Now Rd. loss to Arizona should
- 5:45not disqualify, you know, as as a number two seed, even as ugly
- 5:48as things were for a while last night.
- 5:50But you look at the teams that are behind them at this point,
- 5:53Michigan State, Nebraska, Purdue, Texas Tech, all those
- 5:56teams certainly have opportunities to pass them.
- 6:00And if it would end in that a loss to say Baylor in the first
- 6:03round, then I think that's what we're talking about a three
- 6:05seats still the overall resume, they're in good shape there.
- 6:08That's the other component is we fall into this victimhood of
- 6:12well, and the latest is what happens.
- 6:15We're told it's not. I think that's a lie.
- 6:18We're still, we have a committee of people that put these
- 6:21brackets together and I go back to a dozen years ago, 2014 Iowa,
- 6:26their resume was not a team that should have been shipped to
- 6:28Dayton. There is not one thing that you
- 6:30can point to to say yes, that team showed up when he looked at
- 6:32the totality double. Overtime.
- 6:35No, just single, single overtime.
- 6:36They didn't even cover. Lost my 12 in overtime against
- 6:39Ted to see it. I think they were like a 2 1/2
- 6:41point underdog. But when you look at the Iowa
- 6:43State resume in comparison to those 3 four teams that I just
- 6:46mentioned, they're still in really good.
- 6:48Yeah, they're in good. Shape they're fine, but I mean
- 6:51Andy cast today has them at least starting in Saint Louis.
- 6:53They've been but they've been shipped S to Saint Louis where
- 6:56there'll be a three seed Uconn's the one Iowa actually is in is
- 7:01in the same region. They would they're nine seed
- 7:03against Miami. But if cats prediction is even
- 7:06close to being right, there would be a three seed.
- 7:09The six seed is Tennessee. The two seed would be Illinois.
- 7:13So that that seems like a a spot that you wouldn't mind being and
- 7:16that would other than the fact you don't get Chicago, you'll
- 7:19get Houston. But I just think that they're
- 7:20retired group Trent and you when you take a look at the shooting
- 7:24woes that this team has currently.
- 7:27I mean, Jefferson was awful last.
- 7:28Night. Let's not sure go to he was God
- 7:31awful other than the free throws which he made, which he does
- 7:35crazy, right? I mean, if they if you're
- 7:36looking for a positive in the game, they were 12 of 13 from
- 7:39the charity stripe last night. But Jefferson 2 of 17.
- 7:43Manchilovich was two of eight. Let me get my glasses.
- 7:47And then you drop down to Nate Heisey, who if he's on the
- 7:49floor, yes, he plays some defense.
- 7:51What? But yet when he's got an
- 7:52opportunity to shoot the basketball, make the shots, you
- 7:55know he's missing. He he can't miss those shots.
- 7:58Bateman's going to fire up a bunch of them, and that's OK.
- 8:00He's a shooter. But.
- 8:02But started what? O for five.
- 8:04He did as as they finally made one and.
- 8:07Had that second one then shortly after and he was like 2 or 7 and
- 8:11all right still curate. Is a liability offensively
- 8:17Munchilovich puts put somebody in his face.
- 8:21It's not going to normally it's not going to end well with
- 8:23length, with length, right, of course, yeah, with length.
- 8:26The ball goes down inside to Buchanan.
- 8:28He's looking to pass it out. I just I like Buchanan's game.
- 8:32It's just I don't know what it is.
- 8:34I think it's I think it's a big reason is just how they must be
- 8:38exhausted. I think here's the good news.
- 8:41They don't play till Saturday, right?
- 8:43That's a tough turn around, tough turn around. 2 upper
- 8:46echelon teams in the Big 12 in Texas Tech and in Arizona in 48
- 8:50hours and a long road trip to be thrown in there.
- 8:53I know they're on coming. Off a long a long road trip too.
- 8:56That's true. The UConn or the the Utah rather
- 8:59trip. All right, let's take a few
- 9:01calls in here. Love to hear what you have to
- 9:02say. If you're so inclined, we will
- 9:04line you up right now to do so. How do you feel?
- 9:06What did what's wrong with this team?
- 9:08Can you pinpoint or is there nothing wrong in your mind?
- 9:11This is the a product of a back loaded Big 12 and there's no
- 9:15denying that that schedule has been back loaded.
- 9:19But I think that's great. I mean it's not just Iowa State
- 9:21that's playing in these. You know, the tougher, the
- 9:23tougher teams on their schedule are in the final cups, a couple
- 9:27of weeks of the regular season. This is a conference thing and I
- 9:30think it's great for the conference to play these
- 9:33unbelievable games late in the year.
- 9:34Let's take Mike 1st and we'll go through and clear them all out
- 9:38here. Hello Mike, How are you?
- 9:39What did you see last night? Is the sky falling?
- 9:44Yeah, well, it is. Welcome back, honey.
- 9:46One and done in the NCAA Tournament.
- 9:48You know why? Because these guys are run down
- 9:51their legs. You know, their legs are tired.
- 9:53They can't shoot, you know, and he does that every year.
- 9:57He goes to an 8 man rotation. If you're going to play that
- 10:00hard and practice play that, that defense during the game,
- 10:05you got to go to a 10 man rotation.
- 10:07Where's that one guy that he hasn't played all year?
- 10:10He got in, He made a couple baskets when he got in.
- 10:13I mean, Lipsy, if he's, I mean Jefferson is our point guard and
- 10:18you know, he's going one against five, you know, and we're
- 10:22turning the ball over. We're throwing up the shots at
- 10:24the basket against the seven foot eight guy and you're not
- 10:28going to make these shots. And we got to if you have to put
- 10:31four guys screening below Savitch, you got to do it and
- 10:35the and the other guy bait. But you got to have these guys
- 10:39shoot 53 pointers because they keep trying to go inside.
- 10:43You can't go inside. You're going to get the ball
- 10:45stolen and because they don't call reaching in anymore.
- 10:49And when you got a guy guy that's 73 in the middle, you're
- 10:52not going to get a lay up there. What do you guys think?
- 10:55I think that's a very good call, Mike.
- 10:56Appreciate it. And you get back to us.
- 10:58Yeah, good to hear. From you one and done, says Mike
- 11:00in Waterloo. I never thought I'd hear the
- 11:02name. No, that's a great point.
- 11:03Right. This guy's as optimistic as any
- 11:05of our callers, less slash listeners over the years.
- 11:09I, I, I would be shocked if they make it to the second weekend.
- 11:12Look, it's great for business if they do.
- 11:13And I hope like hell one of them does.
- 11:16You know, one of the teams in our state does.
- 11:17But it's a man. Oh man, I'm not sure it's the
- 11:19one from Story County at this point or any of them.
- 11:22Jeff, welcome to the show. How are you?
- 11:24What's going on? Nothing much.
- 11:26It's going to be hard to follow up that call, but I'll do my
- 11:29best. You know, last night, you know,
- 11:32I don't want to say it's it's fatigue again.
- 11:35I think that's could that be a part?
- 11:36Absolutely. But let's let's start with the
- 11:40positives. You touched on free throws, You
- 11:42know, I touched on rebounding and, and you know, they were,
- 11:45you could tell it was, it was a point of ethicist last night to
- 11:48get on the glass. You know, offensive rebounds,
- 11:51yeah, which was great. Which they which what they did.
- 11:53And I thought the same thing. And then, you know, Seth
- 11:55Greenberg said the same thing at halftime.
- 11:57OK, So what, you get offensive rebounds?
- 11:59What do you doing with it? They didn't do nothing.
- 12:01With well in two year point, Sean Roberts just left the left
- 12:04the studio, he said. You got 15 offensive rebounds
- 12:06but only 5 putbacks. Points off second voice.
- 12:10Thanks. Second, yeah, second chance
- 12:11points. And that's my, that's, that's
- 12:12the point. What did, what did you do with
- 12:14it? Now, you know, Mike touched on
- 12:17this, they, you know, they, they try to run as much as they can
- 12:21for Montsilovich. Now, again, you guys watch
- 12:24Cyclone fans watch a lot of people watch when they run a
- 12:26highball screen and they have Tetra or Buchanan up there.
- 12:30You could tell they were just sagging all the way into the
- 12:33point, into the paint. There's nothing there.
- 12:35And they never got out of that action.
- 12:37They stayed in that action all night long.
- 12:41Now when you have Torre in there with Buchanan and Heise there,
- 12:46there's there's no driving light 0.
- 12:49So then you can't get downhill. The shooters are getting stuck
- 12:52on and then you're trying to mix and match things that it's just
- 12:56it's not there. So I don't think it's fatigue
- 12:58when you're watching that last night and you're thinking, OK,
- 13:01if they're in the tournament, you're going to have some tight
- 13:03rims, you're going to have some some lower.
- 13:06It's not going to be Hilton. Now, I'm not going to come on
- 13:08here and say there it's a one and done opportunity.
- 13:11But when you watch this team again defensively, you know,
- 13:15when they're when they're getting a aggressive and there's
- 13:17guys that are just they're easy blow by.
- 13:19You know, Machilovich was getting blown by.
- 13:21When you put Bateman in, he's getting blown by even, You know,
- 13:25you're even watching their best defenders.
- 13:26And then with the turnovers, yes, it wasn't the best game for
- 13:29them, but it didn't start with Arizona.
- 13:32This has been going on. We've been watching this.
- 13:34This happened at TCU. This happened at Cincinnati.
- 13:37This is the woes they've had on the road.
- 13:40Not again, not just this season, but for a long, long time now
- 13:43moving forward. Yeah, they get Arizona and I, I
- 13:46watched on this yesterday. I don't really care what they do
- 13:49in the Big 12 tournament. I don't know where they're set
- 13:51up, if they're going to play Kansas that second game and if
- 13:54they would. OK, so you get Kansas that
- 13:57second game and then Arizona. That does not mean nothing to
- 14:01me. I don't care if they win.
- 14:02That means nothing to me. It's getting in the tournament,
- 14:05hopefully getting a good draw. And how about kind of like Iowa?
- 14:09How about getting off to a hot start?
- 14:11How about getting getting a coach to call a time out within
- 14:13the first TV time out? That's what Iowa and Iowa State
- 14:17needs. They need to get off to a hot
- 14:18start and let someone ride them to the finish line.
- 14:21You guys have a good. Day.
- 14:22Thank you, Jeff. Appreciate the passion as
- 14:24always. Ben, how are you, Ben?
- 14:28Are you there only once lost, Ben?
- 14:34No big deal, we will try to get him back on.
- 14:36Maybe he had a bad line there. He wants to a call back.
- 14:39Did you see much of the Duke game?
- 14:41I did a little bit, not much because when I turned it on it
- 14:45was just. His team is.
- 14:46Unbelievable. So I truly are.
- 14:48I mean, I watched probably like a 8 minute stretch.
- 14:50They're so connected on the defensive end.
- 14:52I mean they are just at such a high level over there.
- 14:55And we saw what they did against Michigan.
- 14:57The ACC is not very good. It doesn't matter.
- 14:59This is an elite team. Over under #1 seeds in the Final
- 15:04Four at the Condon Casino, would you set it at 2 1/2 or 3 1/2?
- 15:09That's where we'd set the numbers 2 1/2, but we'd probably
- 15:12have to play around with the juice.
- 15:13Because I think everybody's going to take the over.
- 15:15It is those three teams are separating themselves, Duke,
- 15:19Michigan, Arizona. We both love Florida.
- 15:22And out of that next year, who who are you confident with right
- 15:25now? Illinois.
- 15:26Nope, Houston. No Purdue, certainly not Sparty,
- 15:32no Iowa State. God, no UConn.
- 15:35Maybe, maybe that's the top ten. We have two other teams that we
- 15:40like 2. Yeah.
- 15:43That you're confident can, yes, I think this team absolutely,
- 15:46even regardless of draw, can make a run.
- 15:48I so I tried to find this today because I think you, I thought
- 15:50you said that it's out there somewhere, maybe FanDuel or
- 15:53something. Arizona, Michigan versus the
- 15:57field or Arizona, Michigan and Arizona versus the field.
- 16:01Could you find that price anywhere?
- 16:02And the reason I'm asking is I'm not going to bet it, but I'm
- 16:04going to use it in our Mediacom show.
- 16:06Oh, gotcha. I don't have it handy.
- 16:09I'll look around maybe during the process and at this.
- 16:11Point it, it just seems, I get it, it's a sporting event.
- 16:16You got to win six games. It's it's a one and done.
- 16:18There's all of those things working, but I just can't see
- 16:21anybody other than Ducor, Michigan, and I think there's a
- 16:25gap to Arizona Believe. It or not?
- 16:27Yeah, I'm. I'm with you.
- 16:28Not a huge gap by any means, but a gap to #3 and I think Arizona
- 16:32is #3. I put you those two together,
- 16:34Arizona on their own tier. Yes, and then?
- 16:37Florida, yeah, Yukon, probably. Maybe that's another tier.
- 16:43And then you get into the flawed teams, you get into the teams
- 16:46that are talented enough. The Houstons, the Texas Techs,
- 16:50The. You know, fill in the blanks,
- 16:53Illinois. Bracket opens up those kind of
- 16:56things, team versus field. That is just Arizona.
- 16:59I saw that, yeah, I've seen that.
- 17:01I haven't seen when you put them together, if you can just get
- 17:04and I'm sure somebody's got it out there and if somebody does,
- 17:06I'd be interested in knowing that what that price is because
- 17:09man, oh man, Duke is on a different level.
- 17:11Michigan watching them on Friday night.
- 17:14Just destroy Illinois that. Building was lit.
- 17:18To welcome the Wolverines. And the Wolverines quieted that
- 17:20building in a blink of an eye. Disappointing effort last night
- 17:25for for the Cyclones, it really was.
- 17:26And they kind of got that ugly start.
- 17:28I mean, they weren't going to just go out and outscore that
- 17:30team. They kind of got the start that
- 17:32they needed. Yeah, then both teams were
- 17:34struggling to shoot the ball. Snap of a finger.
- 17:36It just completely goes. What was it, a 12?
- 17:38Two, No 15, three run to end the first half.
- 17:41Is that what it was? 15 Three run at the end of the
- 17:44first half and they could never recover.
- 17:45From that, they got it to seven at one point there with what
- 17:49maybe 8 minutes left, I can't remember the time when they got
- 17:51it to seven and boom, just right again.
- 17:54Arizona team Bradley had an answer.
- 17:55He was really good. It was good to hear him, you
- 17:57know. What Bradley did play well,
- 17:59Yeah, Yep. They're a team that is difficult
- 18:01to say, well, this team should be, this guy should be the MVP
- 18:05of the Big 12, right? He should be player of the year
- 18:07because they're just so deep and there's so many different guys.
- 18:10Would Bradley be the guy though, that you point to for Arizona?
- 18:13Man, I like breweries a lot too, but Bradley's they they've got
- 18:17they've got some options. Even the big fella crevice in
- 18:20the middle, Awaka off the bench. What a game he had last night in
- 18:25his 25. Not saying player of the year,
- 18:27but Trent's point they got they're so damn depth or so damn
- 18:30deep, rather. Delorso, Awaka.
- 18:36They're they're a pain in the you know what?
- 18:38Arizona's a pain in the you know what to whoever comes up against
- 18:41them as we move on through March.
- 18:43Hello, Devin. Welcome to the program.
- 18:45Devin, how are you? Doing good gentlemen.
- 18:47Happy Tuesday. Kenny, you said you said Story
- 18:51County reminded me of a rant you went on a couple months ago
- 18:53about left lane campers on in the Interstate.
- 18:56Well, I got another one for you. How about when when I get over
- 18:59in the left lane on the Interstate to let someone merge
- 19:02over, that person should not be matching my speed in my work
- 19:06fan. It tops off at 70 and so I
- 19:08cannot sit in the left lane and just hold up traffic.
- 19:11And that just absolutely sends me over the edge.
- 19:12And it made me think. And the people behind you.
- 19:16And then another thing in more, I guess basketball related or
- 19:19NIL related in the world of NIL, Ken Miller, how much do we got
- 19:23to pay you to keep you around at least one more year?
- 19:26You got to go one more, man. You got to go one more.
- 19:28Thank you, Devin. Appreciate the call.
- 19:30You bet, you bet. I don't think you have to talk
- 19:32Ken into it. That's not me.
- 19:35That's not going to happen. She's not going for.
- 19:37It no, it's not happening. Sadly, yeah, very sadly, no. 30
- 19:41years is enough too, but it's it's I've had my turn anyways.
- 19:47Devin's a good photographer by. The way yes, he is I.
- 19:49Saw some of his work in fact I I think you know you nobody sees
- 19:52your likes anymore, right When you like something on Twitter.
- 19:55I think that stays. When I used to like stuff, it
- 19:58used to show up on other. People's feeds, right?
- 20:00Yes, and I think that's changed now.
- 20:02Yes, Devin's a hell of a photographer.
- 20:03He posted some Drake photos of his time.
- 20:06Is he graduating or something because he said he enjoyed his
- 20:09time there in the tweet that I saw.
- 20:11Boy, he's a good photographer. Good dude too.
- 20:13Yeah, is he? You met him.
- 20:14Met him up at the KXNO video game thing that he.
- 20:17Participated. I'm not even, I can't remember
- 20:20if he was in the league or just showed up.
- 20:21But yeah, having a good dude. So is this a yearly thing you
- 20:24guys? Are going to continue forward
- 20:25this. I think so.
- 20:26I mean, it's, we're two years in and it's been fun and I get
- 20:29trounced. And I mean, you have those elite
- 20:31level guys that know that all the cheater codes and, and know
- 20:33the certain plays that are gonna work every single time and
- 20:35there's nothing you can do. And I just throw my controller
- 20:37down and get it all frustrated. But, and I found out something.
- 20:41So my little guy Jack, he's starting to get into the college
- 20:44football video game and he's got some of the same anger problems
- 20:47Dad gets every once in a while. Well a couple nights ago he was
- 20:51hollered at the TV the Hawkeyes were not playing well and it
- 20:53went down there and he had missed 4 field goals.
- 20:55Take him off Twitter. He was.
- 20:57He was not. Pleased.
- 20:58No, it doesn't go. It doesn't go.
- 20:59Good for Dad right now. The Hawkeyes get an embarrassing
- 21:02loss. All right, one more, one more
- 21:03topic before we go to break. DraftKings has this available.
- 21:08Max Crosby's next team Did you see who's favored to be the
- 21:13where Max Crosby plies his trade and gets his mail next year?
- 21:16I. Didn't, but the way that you
- 21:18frame it make me believe that it's the choice of course.
- 21:21They are two to one, the two to one choice.
- 21:24Max Crosby on the Chicago Bears on that defensive line.
- 21:29My God, talk about an area of need.
- 21:32How good would that be? What are you giving up?
- 21:35Well, obviously you're going to have to it's, it's going to be a
- 21:38lot. Couple first rounders.
- 21:39Probably he's not a quarterback, but he's a health player.
- 21:42Yeah, they did this with Khalil Mack.
- 21:44And what did they give up for Khalil Mack?
- 21:47Great question. I think it was a couple of
- 21:49first. Rounders, I believe you are
- 21:50correct. What we do know, it was too much
- 21:52because bears trade Khalil Mack. Let's see what they gave up for
- 21:57that one. Not as much.
- 22:01They gave up a second round pick and a sixth round pick.
- 22:05What for Kalu Mack? That can't be right.
- 22:08Well, it's AI, so it's probably wrong, right?
- 22:10I don't. Know two first round picks?
- 22:11Yeah, there it is. Come on, AI.
- 22:13AI sucks. Two first round picks for Kalu
- 22:16Mack and this guy's in that same kind of, I think a talent range.
- 22:21Kalu Mack also rumored to be going back to your squad.
- 22:24Oh, really? Yeah.
- 22:25You know, we'll see as they try to build that, that line and
- 22:28what I think is going to be just a fascinating division.
- 22:30It's going to be great. It is.
- 22:32So what does? David Montgomery?
- 22:34We talked about it briefly yesterday.
- 22:35What? What does him?
- 22:36Going to Houston mean as far as Houston's chances.
- 22:40Nothing, because they've. Still got CJ Strouded
- 22:42quarterback. Is that where you're going?
- 22:43I was going to start with the offensive.
- 22:45Line. Well, that's bad too, yes.
- 22:47Not a good combination. A quarterback that looks lost.
- 22:50Trent, I haven't seen a quarterback play that poorly.
- 22:53Now I did watch Stidham. That's true, but he's a backup.
- 22:56Different circumstances. Yes.
- 23:00I have no idea. And to regress the way he did.
- 23:03It and as quickly as it happened, yes, he went.
- 23:06From He's not quite there, you had these questions with him,
- 23:09wouldn't afford to start the year, whatever they were, and he
- 23:11wasn't playing well. Then he started to figure it out
- 23:14and that just completely fell off a Cliff after that,
- 23:16culminating with what we saw in the playoff game where looked
- 23:19like he was playing for the wrong team.
- 23:20I mean, that's he was awful, terrible in that game.
- 23:24So for David Montgomery, behind a bad offensive line and the
- 23:27quarterback? Get Tank Dell back, obviously
- 23:30Collins is still there, Schultz their tight ends, a nice player.
- 23:33Defence is loaded. I mean, defence is elite to
- 23:36begin with, but it's CJ Shroud. And a bad offensive.
- 23:39Line and a bad offensive line. I don't know what their cap
- 23:42space is like I don't know but if if they can fix that old line
- 23:47maybe Houston is a factor worth looking at.
- 23:49One final thing, you saw the news today from the athletic
- 23:53director at Iowa State. Gymnastics is going away for
- 23:56Iowa State. Now they.
- 23:57He earlier had suspended the remainder of this season.
- 24:01And then ultimately today the the the sport was done away
- 24:05with. Like I don't know if there'd
- 24:08been a time up until today in my 30 years that we talked about I
- 24:11state gymnastics. So I don't want to parachute in
- 24:13and RIP them for anything or question because I just don't
- 24:16know. And I feel a lot of place doing
- 24:18that. It is a sport that we don't have
- 24:22high school gymnastics here, right?
- 24:24There's no high school athletic gymnastics.
- 24:26Teams, You know what? I hadn't thought about it that
- 24:29way, but I I think you're right. They are going to bring a
- 24:32women's sport in. Probably basketball.
- 24:35I mean, probably wrestling, rather.
- 24:36I think that would be the one that makes the most sense and
- 24:38you see the growth of that sport, you see what's happening
- 24:41on the girls side. Yeah, and on the eastern side of
- 24:43the stage as well. Absolutely.
- 24:45So part of Cyhawk. That would make a whole lot of
- 24:47sense. I know people would love to have
- 24:48hockey. It's too expensive.
- 24:50It is, yeah. It's too expensive, I.
- 24:51Think I think people love to have baseball in age.
- 24:54Well, that's a men's sport, right?
- 24:55Yeah, that's a good point. You have to have a women's
- 24:57sport. Yeah, yeah.
- 24:58So we're talking about matching scholarships and Title 9 and to
- 25:00do that, it's another women's sport that is going to come in.
- 25:03I would say that wrestling is probably the easiest decision
- 25:06there and I just don't know what else makes sense, financial
- 25:08sense along with. This so help me out with this
- 25:11because you you obviously follow the high school sports and
- 25:14you're working tonight you're going to be working Thursday is
- 25:18girls wrestling in the state of Iowa taking off like a rocket
- 25:22ship. Oh.
- 25:22Absolutely. I mean, the participation
- 25:24numbers are through the roof. Every single year they're going
- 25:26up. Yes, Are they?
- 25:27The growth has been huge. We've seen already they went
- 25:30from one class when it started up now to two classes.
- 25:33The girls union is now sponsoring it.
- 25:35Something that wasn't happening early on.
- 25:36It was more kind of a club sport type of thing and it's built up
- 25:39from there here just the last couple of years, multiple
- 25:42sessions sold out over in Iowa City or Coralville at the arena
- 25:45over there. So absolutely, look at
- 25:47participation numbers. A sport that matters in the
- 25:49state of Iowa, this would be How about across?
- 25:51The country? What about Division One?
- 25:53Well, there aren't a whole lot and I was preparing for
- 25:55nationals, women's nationals. And how many teams will be
- 25:58there? I'm not sure the number of
- 26:00teams, but you look at the teams there, it's not.
- 26:02I was not facing Penn State and Ohio State and Iowa State.
- 26:06It is a bunch of D2 and D3 schools that are wrestling at
- 26:09the NCAA level for women. So there's growth potential
- 26:12there. We see it happening so.
- 26:13It's ground floor, essentially, yeah.
- 26:16And one that makes sense in the state of Iowa.
- 26:17We'll take your time out. Adam Eminecker will join Trenton
- 26:20I Next O Co sponsors. We will talk.
- 26:23Missouri Valley Conference tournament with Adam Eminecker
- 26:26on the other side. Miller and Condon.
- 26:28We're underway on our Tuesdays, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 26:35Coco Pizza now two locations serving the best New York style
- 26:38pizza in Des Moines, the original 24th and University in
- 26:41the Drake neighborhood, new location Plaza Shops Prairie
- 26:44Trail in Ankeny. Let's talk to Missouri Valley
- 26:47Conference tournament gets underway on Thursday.
- 26:49Our guy, former player of the year in the valley, Adam
- 26:52Emmenecker joins us. Preview Saint Louis where you
- 26:55will be. Adam Emmenecker, good to talk to
- 26:57you. How are you?
- 26:58Are you on your way there as we speak?
- 27:01I am not on the way as we speak. I will be tomorrow morning.
- 27:05But yeah, looking forward to a Missouri Valley Conference in
- 27:09Arch Madness. First three games on Thursday
- 27:12this year with only eleven teams and then the the quarterfinal
- 27:16Friday where we'll have a couple great matchups without question.
- 27:20Yeah, no doubt about it. You know, Trent and I were
- 27:22kicking around as we normally do at some point bet the betting
- 27:25odds for the respective tournaments etcetera.
- 27:28I was blown away that despite the fact that you and I has to
- 27:32play on Thursday and as you know, there's only been there's
- 27:35never nobody's ever got out of Thursday to cut down the Nets.
- 27:37Only I think 1 school has made it as far as the final before
- 27:41succumbing on Sunday. The Panthers are actually the
- 27:44second betting favorite in this event.
- 27:47They've got a favorable draw, one would assume, but at the
- 27:49same time, Adam, they've got that extra game.
- 27:53Yeah, yeah, You know, you look at the draw and it's pretty
- 27:56tough. I think that the whole bottom
- 27:58part of the bracket, yeah. Bradley is the two seed.
- 28:00Illinois State is the three you and I in Evansville, of course
- 28:04playing on Thursday and then Valpo against Indiana State.
- 28:07And I think when you look at those matchups, you know, of
- 28:10course you're going to look and you're going to think the first
- 28:12team that would probably be the second favorite would be the two
- 28:15seed in Bradley. Well, Bradley in their first
- 28:17Friday game would either play Valpo or Indiana State.
- 28:21Valpo Bradley split with this this year Indiana State Bradley
- 28:25won A2 overtime game in Terre Haute and then was down with
- 28:29just about a minute and a half to go before overcoming They
- 28:32were down the whole game before overcoming the sycamores.
- 28:34So I think you look at Bradley and know their Friday games
- 28:37going to be a challenge, but the same is true for you and I I
- 28:41think the the betting odds are a big bet on Ben Jacobson coming
- 28:44back after last year. This team disappointed going out
- 28:47in the Friday game last year in arch madness and this this is
- 28:51going to be a hungry group. You have to assume they're in a
- 28:53pretty good position to beat Evansville and then a match up
- 28:56against an Illinois State Redbird team that you and I have
- 29:00lost both games to. So this will This will be an
- 29:02interesting match up for the Panthers but they have a tough
- 29:05Rd. You mentioned that Illinois
- 29:06State team who you and I would face with a win against
- 29:09Evansville. Talk about two great victories.
- 29:11They go on the road beat you and I.
- 29:13They were ridiculous from the field in the second-half against
- 29:15the best defense in the MVC. And then they got beat Belmont
- 29:18at home to end the regular season.
- 29:20What's gone right here recently for Illinois State and yes,
- 29:23they're the number 3 seeds, so they are a contender to cut down
- 29:26the Nets. What has changed for the red
- 29:28birds? Yeah, so the Red Birds have won
- 29:31three out of four and that goes a long way.
- 29:34You know, you look at this team was pre season #1 in the league
- 29:37and when they were sitting just a little while ago at 9:00 and
- 29:407:00 in the standings, there were people that were wondering
- 29:43is, is Ryan Peeden going to be around next year?
- 29:45Right. I mean that that's where the Red
- 29:47Bird fans were. But you see how this team has
- 29:50closed the year and it is it is consummate to the firepower that
- 29:54they have. They're really balanced.
- 29:55They have Chase Walker, who is an all league guy.
- 29:58A year ago I voted him second team.
- 30:00This year we'll see where he ends up shaking out.
- 30:02But he is one of the toughest covers in the league and you
- 30:05have a lot of perimeter shooting.
- 30:06This team's been better defensively of late.
- 30:09That's a pretty good Illinois State ballclub.
- 30:11I wouldn't be surprised to see them in a Sunday game as well.
- 30:14Well, let's go from a team that's Arrows pointing up to a
- 30:17team that lost their nine their final nine regular season game.
- 30:20What happened with Drake this year?
- 30:23Can you pinpoint it? I mean, obviously putting
- 30:25together roster, new coach etcetera.
- 30:27They've been there before and it's been successful in the
- 30:30past. This year obviously not the
- 30:32case. What happened is they, you know,
- 30:34lost their final nine games. What was the main reason for
- 30:37that? Any.
- 30:37Idea. Well, if if it was a singular
- 30:41event, I have a high amount of confidence that the coaching
- 30:44staff would have figured that out and right the right at the
- 30:46ship. You know that the team, I think
- 30:48you look mid seasons and it's six and five in the league and
- 30:51you felt OK. You felt OK about this group
- 30:53maybe being 500, maybe being a little before.
- 30:56I think part of the challenge is the league closed.
- 30:58It closed won the schedule got a little bit harder right So
- 31:02losing games to Bradley, losing to at Belmont, losing at
- 31:05Illinois State. That was three in a row that
- 31:08helped start this losing streak. And, you know, I think one of
- 31:11the things that we've seen over the course of this year, for the
- 31:13most part, this direct team's been pretty competitive, just as
- 31:16had a hard time finding the right mix, the right combination
- 31:19to close games. And in particular, it's been
- 31:22making all the little hustle plays and, and, and having the
- 31:25right level of scouting report buy in and depth on the
- 31:29defensive end. And you know, I think you look
- 31:31at the talent this group has, some talent they've just
- 31:34haven't, they've been on the wrong side of a lot of those
- 31:375050 games down the stretch. When you look at Eric Henderson,
- 31:41you're #1 here in the Valley coming from the Summit League, a
- 31:44very offensive minded league, now moving into the NBC, known
- 31:47historically as a more defensive, more rugged type of,
- 31:50of league. Is he going to have to change
- 31:52either the type of player that he's looking at in the portal
- 31:55and recruiting at the high school level and maybe even
- 31:58style of play a little bit? Because South Dakota State,
- 32:00really outside of the one year when they had Douglas Wilson,
- 32:03the, well, Hoover grad in the middle there, and they had
- 32:05Shireman, who's now in the NBA, they were never a great
- 32:08defensive team. Do you think Henderson's going
- 32:10to maybe have to go back into the toolbox and reconfigure the
- 32:13way that he coaches? Yeah.
- 32:15You know, I don't know if it's reconfigure the way you coach
- 32:18necessarily, but I think if you look at Belmont as a potential
- 32:21model, there's, there's a great corollary in that Belmont, the
- 32:25first couple years they were in the NBC, you know, they were,
- 32:27they were used to both Belmont and Murray State just pretty
- 32:30much dominating the OBC that I'm talking to.
- 32:33Some people affiliated with the programs, they would say that,
- 32:35you know, we knew we were going to start out with eight wins
- 32:37because there were four teams that weren't going to beat us
- 32:39basically, right. And then you just have to make
- 32:42sure you're up for the for the best games.
- 32:44That's not true in the Valley. How Casey Alexander has evolved
- 32:48his team is he's had a bunch of red shirts.
- 32:51So he's got a few guys that are freshmen red shirts this year
- 32:54that are making big contributions, but they've
- 32:57gotten more defensive minded. They've got more versatile on
- 33:00that end and they've gotten bigger in the middle.
- 33:02I think if you talk to coach Eric Henderson and and his staff
- 33:05and what you're thinking about as you go into the transfer
- 33:07portal, you go into recruiting next year, we're going to be
- 33:10looking to get a little bit thicker on the interior.
- 33:13And they're going to be looking for some experienced guys to try
- 33:17to build overtime, bringing some people in new that can kind of
- 33:20fit that culture. Adam Ebenecker joins us.
- 33:23Doko Pizza sponsors Adam's weekly appearance both with us
- 33:27and the boys in the afternoon. Schweiger was really good on
- 33:31Sunday in the final finale for both you and I and Drake of the
- 33:35regular season. Can you make a case that
- 33:38Northern Iowa is playing their best basketball and is about to
- 33:41go on a run here in Saint Louis? Well.
- 33:44I, I think they're, you know that they are incredibly
- 33:46capable, right? And I think when you look at
- 33:48that Panther ball club, you have 3 or 4 potential X factors and
- 33:53Ben Schweiger is is a big part of that.
- 33:55You look at you think about Schweiger, you think about Leon
- 33:58Bond and you think about the punch that occasionally Ben
- 34:01Jacobson gets from the three-point line with Wise Brode
- 34:03or Poke. You look at the balance on this
- 34:06Panther ball club and because you know they're going to be
- 34:09good on the defensive end, it's going to give you an opportunity
- 34:12to win. Really what you're looking for
- 34:14for that staff on the offensive end, you're looking for one of
- 34:17those one or two of those guys to really have that 12/15/17 in
- 34:22point outing. That's enough to carry this
- 34:25Panther offense with the consistency of Trey Campbell and
- 34:28Will Hornsteth and Tristan Smith.
- 34:30It's one of the guys around those three that have to have a
- 34:33really good game. And I think if you look going
- 34:35through the weekend, there's three or four guys that if one
- 34:39has a good game on Friday, if they get to Friday, 1 has a good
- 34:42game on Saturday, one has a good game on Sunday, you and I could
- 34:46break that streak of being the first team that played on a
- 34:48Thursday and potentially gets the auto bid to the NCAA
- 34:51tournament. If the favorite Belmont does win
- 34:54it, they are by far the best team in the league.
- 34:56And you look at their resume, obviously what they've done this
- 34:59season, they are projected right now to be a 12 seed in the NCAA
- 35:03tournament. Does Casey Alexander squad have
- 35:05enough to pull an upset, maybe a 512 matchup and I know matchups
- 35:09are going to dictate that. And is there enough on this
- 35:12squad to win a couple of games to get to a Sweet 16?
- 35:15Yeah, I definitely, I mean, I think you look at the balance
- 35:18for this group, one of the Belmont Elite skill is their
- 35:21ability to spread the floor on the offensive end and shoot.
- 35:24And the ability to spread the floor on the offensive end and
- 35:27shoot means it can get you into a lot of games.
- 35:29Where they've gotten better, as we've talked about, is they're
- 35:31they're better with from an athleticism standpoint, they're
- 35:34better defensively and they also have pretty good depth off the
- 35:37bench. I think this Belmont team,
- 35:39unfortunately, where we sit today, I think they'd be on the
- 35:42outside looking in if they're not able to win, if they're not
- 35:46able to win the conference tournament.
- 35:48But this is definitely going to be a dangerous team and they're
- 35:51sitting around where Drake was last year in the net, so
- 35:54probably hovering around what would be an 11 or 12 seed if
- 35:57they're able to make it in. Well, last thing for me on away
- 36:00from the Valley want to ask you about Miami.
- 36:02Just your opinion on Miami. If they, you know, make it
- 36:05through the regular season, there's two games left there, 29
- 36:07and O, that would get them to 31 and O before their conference
- 36:11tournament. If should they get beat, what's
- 36:15the is the committee going to have a difficult decision or in
- 36:18your mind the body of work going 31 and O during up until your
- 36:22conference tournament, Is that enough?
- 36:24Where are you on Miami should they lose as far as hearing
- 36:27their name called on Selection Sunday?
- 36:30I mean, isn't it wild that we're talking about a team could be 31
- 36:34at one point and we're saying that they're not even a
- 36:37potential to be in the NCAA tournament?
- 36:39I mean, I think obviously you can hear what some of the
- 36:42detractors would say, right? Miami has played one quad 2
- 36:46game, 0 quad one games and 1 quad 2 game.
- 36:50But, you know, I think the challenge is when you look at
- 36:53the body of work, how do you not let a team in that has over 30
- 36:57wins in the regular season, even if they're mostly quad 3 in four
- 37:00games? I am a proponent of this team
- 37:02has shown an ability to win. They've shown an ability to win
- 37:06throughout the course of an entire season.
- 37:08This is this is a group that deserves a shot at the NCAA
- 37:11tournament, but maybe they can't lose in the first round of the
- 37:13Mack Tournament. But I, I think this Miami team
- 37:16has done enough to be in. Final thing from me, it is award
- 37:19that you won way back in 2009. It is the Larry Bird Award
- 37:23trophy. This year you have Belmont, but
- 37:25as you talked about the balance of this squad, who is your
- 37:28player of the year? Who'd you vote for the race?
- 37:30It's the season. Yeah, so I voted for Tyler
- 37:33Lundblade and and a big reason for that, I thought Jaquan
- 37:36Johnson of Bradley was pretty deserving as well.
- 37:38He was #2 you look, purely statistically and Jaquan Johnson
- 37:42leads the Valley and steals. He's in up in the top and
- 37:45points, he's up at the top and assists.
- 37:47He just does so much for that Bradley team.
- 37:49But I thought the three-game difference just in terms of how
- 37:52Belmont finished above Bradley in the overall final record.
- 37:56And you look at how much Tyler Lundblade means to that team,
- 38:00yes, he leads them in scoring, but it's more than just his
- 38:04scoring. It's ability to space the floor,
- 38:06which isn't a statistic that's easy to quantify.
- 38:09He is really important to that group and I think by far the
- 38:12most important player on a team that ran away with the league.
- 38:15That's why Tyler Lundblade got my vote.
- 38:17Good stuff. Adam Eminekar, thank you as
- 38:19always for doing this. Enjoy.
- 38:20Saint Louis appreciates coming on and thank you.
- 38:23Sounds good. Thanks guys.
- 38:24Good to talk to you, Adam Amenecker, as we check in on the
- 38:28Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
- 38:30You can make an argument also on that team, which Darnowski, the
- 38:32big guy, I mean, he's incredibly important for what they do.
- 38:35I wonder if those guys are maybe even going to split some, both
- 38:38probably will. And if that's going to be the
- 38:40the case and and if it does play out in that fashion, then Jaquan
- 38:43Johnson very well could win it. And talk about a dude that's
- 38:46going to get paid. Yeah, I guess.
- 38:48If there's a if there's a silver lining in Drake's here, most of
- 38:52the roster returns. Or is that a good thing I'm.
- 38:55Not sure, but at least at least you'll know some of the guys.
- 38:59I was looking through the Missouri Valley Player of the
- 39:02Year. Some of the names are just
- 39:04absolutely incredible. Of course, Larry Burt, you start
- 39:06there. Lewis Lloyd, we know that name
- 39:09certainly around here. Paul Pressy when he was at
- 39:10Tulsa, played in the NBA for 12 years.
- 39:13Xavier McDaniel, Hershey Hawkins, back-to-back for him.
- 39:17You go here in recent times, and these are the most recent ones,
- 39:20but it starts Tucker to Reese twice, AJ Green, Cameron
- 39:24Kretwig, AJ Green again, Marcus Towns at Loyola, Fred Van Fleet,
- 39:30Set Tuttle, Doug McDermott twice, Adam Cook, Adam M and
- 39:33Ecker. There's been some.
- 39:35Dudes and some some local ties. I mean, that's why the Valium
- 39:38started really moving the needle here.
- 39:40So you said M and Ecker wanted an 09?
- 39:41I thought it was 08. Was it 08?
- 39:43Yeah, I think it was. Yes, the yeah, 2007 eight. 7-8
- 39:47season. All right, our look at the
- 39:50Missouri Valley Conference sponsored by our friends at Doko
- 39:52Pizza. Not only offering New York style
- 39:55pizza, it's the best in the metro.
- 39:57They've also got salad wings and they cater as well.
- 39:59Dokopizza.com, dokodokodsm.com, dokodsm.com, Doko Pizza, Forest
- 40:09Ave. and in the Shops. At what do we call him?
- 40:14Want to get the official Plaza Shops at Prairie Trail back to
- 40:17wrap up our #1 Scott Dockerman kicks off our number 2, Miller
- 40:21and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 40:23I'm Miller and Condon, welcome back final couple of minutes.
- 40:26Our number one of our program, Scott Dockman back from
- 40:28Indianapolis. Pick his brain what he saw
- 40:31there. He's also penned a piece for the
- 40:34Athletic the 50 greatest rivalries in college basketball.
- 40:39We'll bring that up with Doc as well.
- 40:40Then Bill Bender variety of topics for our buddy Bill Bender
- 40:43covers a sports for the Sporting News.
- 40:46All right, so we are in the midst of the girls state
- 40:49tournament. Boys next week you're going to
- 40:52be you're going to be calling games on Thursday on the Bulls.
- 40:55So I'll be solo Thursday, but let's spend.
- 40:57We only got a couple of. Minutes left in this segment.
- 41:00Teams to beat Who is the where? Where does the power lie?
- 41:04And is there a team that maybe not on everybody's lips that can
- 41:09win it all, but that you think that, you know, don't sell X
- 41:12team short? I I don't think so really now
- 41:16Darling has closed the gap with Johnston, but we certainly know
- 41:20what we've seen recently out of this Johnston team and just what
- 41:23a behemoth that they are and. Across all the sports, really.
- 41:25Well, the exception of football, right?
- 41:26Yes, but for girls basketball it is Johnston.
- 41:29They win title after title after title.
- 41:32They have been and they are undefeated again this season.
- 41:34But the couple of times that we've seen who pushed them, do
- 41:37you? It was Dowling, it was Dowling,
- 41:38yeah. So Dowling is the one there.
- 41:39On the other side of the bracket.
- 41:40We'll have first game Ankeny against Johnston.
- 41:43That'll be at 10 AM Thursday morning.
- 41:45And then it'll be Dowling Catholic against Waukee
- 41:47Northwest, which also should be a really good game there.
- 41:50The gap is not as big as it's been a couple of times on the
- 41:53girls side with Johnston and everybody else.
- 41:56Dowling had them on the ropes. John Sears daughter, by the way,
- 41:59is on that Darling team as a freshman.
- 42:01Yes, they got the the molar set of girls that are really, really
- 42:05good for Darling. So they've played them close
- 42:07earlier this season. Still, it's Johnston.
- 42:10They are a prohibitive favorite in 5A on the girls side.
- 42:13Shock if they got beat, right? Surprise.
- 42:17How do you? How do you?
- 42:18How do you? Beat them from what you've seen.
- 42:19I mean, is there a? It's their physicality that sets
- 42:22them apart. And they've got a they've,
- 42:24they've got a girl that's going where.
- 42:25Notre Dame, Yeah. Jennica Lewis, yeah, right.
- 42:27She's going to Notre Dame top 20 player in the country.
- 42:31She's been a stud since she was a freshman.
- 42:32And absolutely. Was it always going to be Notre
- 42:35Dame? Where any of her I I was stayed
- 42:37at least get a look. Yeah, Iowa was involved until
- 42:39the end. I think that they were a
- 42:40finalist for her, but don't know if it was spread the wings,
- 42:44whatever it was, but Notre Dame, yeah, it's Notre Dame.
- 42:46Hard to hard to say no. Worked out well for Caitlin
- 42:49Clark, but went that direction on the boys side of the big
- 42:52school class. You have the most talented team
- 42:56I still believe is Waukee Northwest.
- 42:58Now they lost to Cedar Falls, They lost to Waukee.
- 43:00They have a couple of other losses.
- 43:02They are though, when you talk about talent, I mean so.
- 43:04It sounds like it's more wide open, the boys and the girls.
- 43:06Oh absolutely, yeah, there, there's no doubt about it.
- 43:08On the boys side, it is Cedar Falls #1 as they should be
- 43:11because they have that win against Waukee Northwest and and
- 43:14what they've done over the course of this season.
- 43:16Waukee Northwest, Colin Rice on his way to Nebraska next year,
- 43:20scored fifty last time out. But what we've seen for Waukee
- 43:24Northwest and Coach Watson's teams is the going gets tough.
- 43:29They were at times more talent in the Valley over the last
- 43:31three years, but they couldn't get it done at the state
- 43:33tournament. And you just wondered.
- 43:35He doesn't play a ton of guys. It is A5 band rotation, one
- 43:39other guy that comes off the bench and that is it.
- 43:41But tight moments, they have not been able to step up.
- 43:43Raw talent, absolutely. When he got a guy going to
- 43:45Illinois and Nebraska and you're starting five in the state of
- 43:48Iowa, that doesn't happen very. Only did I hear you right.
- 43:51You only play six guys. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:53That's it. Matt Kitelin is going to be a
- 43:55college quarterback. He is a really, really good
- 43:58player. Dash Kukan is their only
- 44:00underclassmen that plays. He's a study, so fun to watch.
- 44:02They got all the pieces. Leonard Davis is going to
- 44:04Illinois. He's 6 foot 10.
- 44:06He can shoot it from the outside.
- 44:08He's incredibly skilled. Isaiah Oliver is as good as an
- 44:11athlete as you're going to find Dean Oliver, son, who's on his
- 44:13way to Iowa to play football next season.
- 44:16That's the group that they have. If it all comes together, Waukee
- 44:19Northwest should do it, but we haven't seen them be able to get
- 44:22the hump there. Walk.
- 44:24He's going to be there in the mix, I believe.
- 44:25And to get to the state tournament.
- 44:28I got a great one tonight. Roosevelt playing host to
- 44:31Johnston. By the way, the game already
- 44:33sold out. Wow, yes, at Roosevelt's gym.
- 44:36So I've got to get over there a little bit early and get set up
- 44:38before the love. Roosevelt's Gym I.
- 44:39Absolute. I'm right there with you.
- 44:41Been a couple of years since I've been over there.
- 44:43So excited to get back to do that one.
- 44:45Is the pool still? Open must be right.
- 44:47Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everything's good as far as I
- 44:49know, unless it's closed here in the last couple of years, but
- 44:51that should be a great game tonight.
- 44:52Two teams play really good basketball at the end of the
- 44:55season. Now that game, 7:00 tonight with
- 44:57the Dragons and the Rough. On the bull right. 96.9 FM.
- 45:00Good stuff. All right, our number 2 is
- 45:02coming up next. We will start things off with
- 45:05Scott. Dr. Min, our friend from the
- 45:06Athletic, Bill Bender will join us.
- 45:08He writes for the Sporty News Circus sports sponsors, Trent's
- 45:11Plays of the day, those coming up about 10 minutes or so before
- 45:152:00. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 45:17with you. One hour to go for us.
- 45:19Glad you're with us on the Iowa sports.
- 45:21It's radio network.
