- 0:01Let's talk about employee engagement in your corporate wellness program.
- 0:06And one of the biggest mistakes I see made in employee engagement.
- 0:12So think about it.
- 0:14Why have a corporate wellness program, if your team is not going to participate and what does the team want to, because if you give them things that they don't want, you know, they're not going to participate well today, I'm going to tell you a story about a big mistake that I see made in corporate wellness programs and initiatives.
- 0:38You're listening to Kathie's coaching podcast.
- 0:41I'm your host, Kathie's Owen.
- 0:43And on this channel, we talk about corporate wellness, Reality Transurfing, and more today we're talking about the biggest mistake I see made in corporate wellness programs that is employee engagement.
- 0:58So recently I worked with a company that had a party.
- 1:03They had a celebration.
- 1:06And if this sounds like your company, don't worry, it happens across the board.
- 1:11So I'm not pointing fingers at anybody.
- 1:15This company is very generous, just like your company.
- 1:18And they love to give back to their team.
- 1:22And they have contests, or maybe I shouldn't call them contests because they're not contests, but they have prizes that they give away and they give you a ticket that you put into a bag and you win a prize.
- 1:37The biggest prize of the year, or maybe it was like the second biggest prize of the year.
- 1:42Went to an intern.
- 1:45Somebody that's only at the company for two months.
- 1:49This person should not have even been allowed to participate in this contest.
- 1:55Why?
- 1:56Because.
- 1:58You had somebody over here who's been busting their tail for your business and they got nothing.
- 2:06Absolutely nothing.
- 2:09Oh, they got a free lunch, but trust me, that person did not appreciate it.
- 2:15Why?
- 2:16Because they didn't see the value.
- 2:19You see the value because you're giving it to them, but they do not see the value.
- 2:25They wanted this prize they worked hard all year for you.
- 2:28They did so much.
- 2:29In fact, this person's been with the company for five years and they still have yet to win a price.
- 2:38This happens all the time.
- 2:41And if it sounds like your company, it's not just, you.
- 2:46But there is a better way.
- 2:48And what does that have to do with corporate wellness?
- 2:50It has everything to do with corporate wellness because it starts with a survey.
- 2:58Yeah, it starts with this survey.
- 3:00You need to ask your employees what they want, what they value, what they appreciate.
- 3:08What are they going to use?
- 3:09Do you have a gym for your employees?
- 3:11Are they even using it?
- 3:13And if so, are you rewarding them for doing that?
- 3:16Oh reward Kathie's.
- 3:19There's that word again?
- 3:20I know because that reward.
- 3:25Could a go in to a rewards program.
- 3:29And I know, you know, about a rewards program.
- 3:33For example, you get bonus miles every time you use your credit card.
- 3:40Huh.
- 3:42What if we did the same thing for the company?
- 3:45What, if we did the same thing for your team, they get bonus rewards for what?
- 3:53Good performance.
- 3:55Good productivity.
- 3:57Good use of the health and wellness.
- 4:00Factors that you have inside the company.
- 4:03And not only that you can do all of that digitally, just like you get your bonus miles.
- 4:10You get your bonus points at work.
- 4:12And then from there you can easily attribute those to these prizes and therefore you eliminate the intern.
- 4:22That's only been there for two weeks.
- 4:25Getting the big prize.
- 4:27Instead you reward somebody who has been busting their tail for you.
- 4:32Who has been working overtime because all of these issues.
- 4:37Or because you made a huge sale and the team member worked overtime.
- 4:42Yes.
- 4:43You rewarded them with.
- 4:45Certain perks overtime pay.
- 4:49But maybe that's not what motivates them.
- 4:52So let's go to motivation.
- 4:54There's two types of motivation.
- 4:56There's intrinsic and extrinsic.
- 5:00When you have contests like that, your team is extrinsically motivated.
- 5:06You don't want extrinsic motivation you want intrinsic motivation.
- 5:12But how do you do that?
- 5:13It's kind of tricky because you have to find what motivates your employees and to do that, you need to do surveys.
- 5:23You need to understand.
- 5:25Oh, okay.
- 5:26I see this motivates them.
- 5:28They like having these health and wellness days.
- 5:31They like having these type of contests.
- 5:34Because.
- 5:36When they do that, they're telling you, Hey.
- 5:39This works for me, instead of you telling them this is going to work for you, and this is going to motivate you because it's not going to motivate the ones you want to motivate.
- 5:51Because what happened with that contest is.
- 5:54You motivated the wrong person.
- 5:58He's only going to be there for three months at the most.
- 6:01And be gone.
- 6:03Instead, you've got this little person over here.
- 6:06Who's been busting their tail for you.
- 6:08And been working very hard and working over time, trying to get things done, hasn't even been recognized for that.
- 6:16Maybe motivated the whole team by having a.
- 6:21Uh, luncheon for them or something like that, but that's not gonna motivate that person that you want to motivate because when you motivate this person and you recognize them for the hard work they have done, you have.
- 6:37Intrinsically motivated them.
- 6:40Does that make sense?
- 6:42I do several videos on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, but let me give you an example of extrinsic motivation from myself that maybe you can apply to you.
- 6:55I don't particularly care about waking up early in the morning to go to the gym.
- 7:01It's not like my favorite thing to do, but I am intrinsically motivated to do so, because I know it's going to make me feel better.
- 7:11I know I'm going to perform better at work.
- 7:14I know it's part of my morning routine, which helps me get motivated to go through the day.
- 7:21Oh, there's that word again?
- 7:22Motivation.
- 7:24And I also know that it's going to benefit my family, my work, my job, my team.
- 7:32It's going to benefit everybody if I do it.
- 7:36Those few minutes of waking up in the morning.
- 7:39They're not the greatest, but that's not what motivates me.
- 7:42I remind myself, oh, it's going to be a great day.
- 7:45Something great.
- 7:46It's going to happen today.
- 7:47Let's go.
- 7:48And especially if I go to the gym and I focus on my morning routine, my meditation.
- 7:55I know that's going to set intentions for my day.
- 7:59So let's go back to your team.
- 8:02What's gonna motivate them.
- 8:04And the only way you're gonna know is if you ask them.
- 8:08You ask them what motivates them.
- 8:10And when you have a corporate wellness director or you have a professional that works inside your company that works with your team.
- 8:18Perhaps you even run a questionnaire through your company.
- 8:21Oh, there's a novel idea.
- 8:23That might just give you clues.
- 8:26And those clues are what you want to work with and start working on.
- 8:32When you have somebody like myself working inside your company, I can tell you what's going to motivate them.
- 8:39When you start running a rewards program, like you get on your bonus miles for your credit card on your credit card, you get bonus miles.
- 8:51What if you ran a program that gave your team bonus points for good productivity?
- 8:59Good participation in your health and wellness days.
- 9:02Good teamwork.
- 9:03Good leadership.
- 9:05This is going to motivate your team to go, oh, I just got five points today because I did such and such.
- 9:12And those points add up and then that person gets to put more cards or more points towards the prize.
- 9:22The big prize if they want and gives them more likely a chance to win that.
- 9:27Instead of your intern.
- 9:29Who's only been there two months and is not putting in the work that this guy did.
- 9:36Yeah.
- 9:37So, this is one of the biggest mistakes I see across the board when it comes to corporate wellness programs, because motivation is a funny thing.
- 9:49And when you learn how to motivate your team and you know exactly how to intrinsically motivate them, you will find more productivity.
- 10:00More teamwork, more cohesion in your team.
- 10:04Oh, wait a second.
- 10:06Your employees are running your business.
- 10:08Like you want.
- 10:09Instead of the other way around, because what happens when they get de-motivated.
- 10:15They're going to feel unappreciated and they're going to run your business.
- 10:21The way.
- 10:22They want to run it.
- 10:24You choose.
- 10:26All right.
- 10:26That's my episode for today.
- 10:28I trust that you found it helpful.
- 10:30If you know someone who can benefit from this, please share it with them.
- 10:34And until next time I will see you next time, peace out and Namaste.
