- 0:40Welcome back to our Hamster with a Blump Pen Knife, the Doctor
- 0:43Who Commentary Podcast. Now last week we yesterday we
- 0:48didn't have much commentary but we had a lot of fun.
- 0:51Today I'm going to open up instantly with a question which
- 0:54will stimulate your brain cells. How exciting.
- 0:57And deliver conversation. I'm here still with the
- 1:02magnificent Dylan Reece. Hello.
- 1:06I want to talk to you about over the top Doctor Who villains.
- 1:09OK, please. Because I feel that Professor
- 1:12Zarov ranks. Yeah.
- 1:14And I'd like you now, please, to name your top five like madly
- 1:20melodramatic villains or whether you like that sort.
- 1:22Of thing. I do like that sort of thing.
- 1:24Soul deed. Oh, of.
- 1:26Course. This isn't This is a top five,
- 1:27but I don't know whether I've got the Order Alan Cumming in
- 1:32the new series in The Witch Finders.
- 1:35My Nubian Prince. Oh, who else?
- 1:45The Ronnie the. Ronnie is sort of there.
- 1:50Go to 17, Season 17. You'll be all right.
- 1:52Yeah, I know. But the Ronnie's there.
- 1:53But I'm also thinking both John SIM and Sasha Dewan.
- 1:59If we're talking about Doctor Who actors, John Levine, but.
- 2:03He's not villain, unless you can't in a Yeti.
- 2:05Scene. Are you sure?
- 2:07He's a villain in real life. If you're a paedophile, he's a
- 2:10villain. Who else I'm?
- 2:15I mean the the the list is endless, but I can only think of
- 2:17four for some reason. The trouble is in a new series.
- 2:21Oh, so, Sarah Diplos. Oh, agree.
- 2:24Yeah, but there's many more. The the new series has got a few
- 2:29I think. But it's less so, I think.
- 2:31I think the acting has become a bit more, a bit more.
- 2:34A bit more nuanced, but I feel like they go the other way.
- 2:38Go on. Like, too boring.
- 2:40Like, you know, what's his face in the power of 3?
- 2:43He's given it such. He's given it such an earnest
- 2:46performance that it's almost laughable.
- 2:47And I didn't. Want to be there, Of course.
- 2:49Of. Course well.
- 2:50Look at Keely Hawes in Time Heist.
- 2:52That should have been madly over the top.
- 2:54Yeah, but she's playing it a little I.
- 2:56Don't remember a thing about. It I know it's a cliche, but
- 2:59Keely Hawes as the Ronnie should have happened by now.
- 3:02I know what Jesus every single middle-aged woman.
- 3:06That's cast. Everybody goes at the Ronnie,
- 3:09yeah. So let's just make it the Ronnie
- 3:11and get it over and done with. We're never.
- 3:12Going to see the Ronnie. There's a reason big finished
- 3:14own user. It's because the estate of Pip
- 3:17and Jane Baker, and indeed Pip and Jane Baker didn't really
- 3:19like the Ronnie being used. Then there was a brief moment
- 3:22when it just Pip was live, that they used the rally twice, and
- 3:27then when Pip died and the estate reverted to their kids or
- 3:29whoever it was. Oh, I didn't know that because.
- 3:31Jane didn't want them being. Oh, that's my understanding,
- 3:34anyway. She.
- 3:35Definitely ruled the roost. She did, but they they
- 3:38definitely. But they let bill Bags use her.
- 3:41What for? Rani Reaps?
- 3:42The world, the whirlwind. Have you heard that?
- 3:44I've heard it several times. I need to do it.
- 3:46Have you? Covered it.
- 3:47No I need to do it at some point.
- 3:49That fellow player in the tetrap is incredible.
- 3:51I need I I I do need to do that at some point, so maybe you'll
- 3:55get the invite. I'll play.
- 3:56Yeah. I'm always there for you.
- 3:58All right. Anything you invite me to do,
- 3:59I'm there. Maybe we could do a Rani special
- 4:02with a two big Finnish outings and that.
- 4:05OK, we're there. I don't.
- 4:07Know whether the universe can handle that.
- 4:11And how does Zaraf rank? He's fairly high up there, but I
- 4:14don't think he's quite as over top as people think he is.
- 4:17I think this is quite an over the top story and I think the
- 4:20priest, the camp priest is more over the top.
- 4:22Zaraf is he's just the famous cliffhanger that I think,
- 4:26really. I think this episode is to blame
- 4:28for people thinking he's madly over the top, but one because of
- 4:30the Cliffhanger 2. This is where he's sort of
- 4:32running around going, ha ha ha, you know.
- 4:35And the clips that when you got clips from classic Doctor Who in
- 4:39the 90s and they wanted to show how shit it was like be it
- 4:43resistance is useless or 30 years in the tardo so like it
- 4:47would always be from this episode.
- 4:49The cliffhanger. The cliffhanger and also Bah
- 4:51Doctor does that seem? He blows.
- 4:54He blows the pepper in his face. Yeah, exactly.
- 4:57Order and all of that. So that that's headed to show up
- 4:59a lot, and while it is indicative of the story, I think
- 5:03it's probably the most over the top it gets.
- 5:05And then you throw in the dance of the fish people.
- 5:09I mean, I've never made any secret of the fact that I have a
- 5:12bit of a ponge on for camp over the top Doctor Who now you've
- 5:17recently twice I believe podcasted about dragon fire.
- 5:22Which is? Quite camp and over the top.
- 5:25I I do like camp over the top Doctor Who, but I like it in
- 5:28classic Doctor Who. I think it the the new series
- 5:32very rarely pulls it off. That doesn't mean that it can't.
- 5:35I just think a lot of the time it comes across as silly do.
- 5:39You know, the one that I always go to is Voyage of the Damned
- 5:42and that guy at the end. Voyage of the Damned is what
- 5:45happens if you give gay men too much power.
- 5:49Why are you looking? At me when you say that.
- 5:53Not not. Have no power at all.
- 5:56It's it's the most. I mean, it's great fun, but it's
- 5:59the most self indulgent camp bit of madness that's ever been
- 6:02aired in the name of Doctor Who. It will be being released in six
- 6:06months time. I can actually, in fact, reveal
- 6:09The Voyage of the Damned 1, my Christmas specials, straight,
- 6:14but I think it's just because of its mass appeal.
- 6:16Yeah, rather than. It's got a little known star of
- 6:19neighbours in called Kylie Minogue.
- 6:21Who Kylie Minogue, but the lesser famous sister of Dani
- 6:25Minogue? How of X Factor?
- 6:27And QVCS, Dani Minogue. What on that note shall we skip
- 6:32into Part 3? Let's do it.
- 6:34OK, so this is. This is the most seen bit of
- 6:40Underwater Venice episode 3, because it has it's the one
- 6:43that's existed for the longest amount of time.
- 6:45I. Thought you meant the title
- 6:46seat? No.
- 6:47You mean the episode? Yes.
- 6:49Yeah, this was on the Lost in Time box set.
- 6:52It was on that, but it was first released on VHS in the The
- 6:57Missing Years, so I I feel like the set contained The Reign of
- 7:02Terror on one VHS and then this The Missing Years.
- 7:07No, The Missing Years documentaries on the Ice
- 7:08Warriors. The other VHS contained episode
- 7:113 of this episode, one of The Web Affair and the two episodes
- 7:14of The Faceless Ones and Came. In a little box I remember.
- 7:17You got a little 40th anniversary badge?
- 7:19Do. You remember when the only way
- 7:21you could I never got a badge. Oh.
- 7:24Well, you fucked it, mate. You owed 1 Cent.
- 7:27Take it back to Wally's. How far do you think I'll get?
- 7:31Oh, no, they're still going in Belgium.
- 7:33I'll go all the way over. There you go.
- 7:34Perfect. Do you remember when the single
- 7:39episodes that survived were on the early years, and the trout
- 7:44and years are those types. I love pertwis.
- 7:48You know many British films, including Of The Wicked Lady,
- 7:51You know, that sort of stuff. Oh dear.
- 7:56I love those tapes. The Daleks, the early years, and
- 7:58the Simon and the early years were the best ones.
- 8:02The Daleks was the Daleks master plan, wasn't it?
- 8:04Two episodes of Daleks Master Plan, an episode of Evil and the
- 8:07Daleks. I think that's it.
- 8:09I loved the Shroud one. Do you know why?
- 8:11Because to this day, I love Space Parks Episode 2.
- 8:14Me too. We are going to be too late
- 8:17again. I can't wait for them to animate
- 8:20the space pirates and everyone to fucking love.
- 8:22It I I. Would nominate space pirates to
- 8:28do for this, but the Recon. Not that it's bad, but there's
- 8:32just so little. To it's repeated footage over
- 8:35the episode one, you know where they they go in the space suit
- 8:39and they've got those film trims of them in the space suits in
- 8:42space. You just watch that again and
- 8:44again in episode one. I remember having, when I first
- 8:49met you and your other half in real life, having a long
- 8:51conversation with Mark about the Space Pirates, and it's like,
- 8:54it's great. There's a man that hides under a
- 8:55table in it. I mean, that's that's not true.
- 8:59Fans for you in it. It's the first time we meet in
- 9:01person and we end up talking about the Space Pirates, yeah.
- 9:04Exactly, yeah. Everyone said everything they
- 9:05need to say about pyramids and Mars.
- 9:07Well, clearly about the underwater menace as well.
- 9:12Oh, here's Lolum. Yeah.
- 9:13Oh, Amdo, Amdo. Oh, so the Doctor's going to be
- 9:17executed now, isn't he? Yeah.
- 9:19And and how they get him out of this?
- 9:21By going inside the great statue of Amdo.
- 9:25Going inside statues. Math.
- 9:30Always been in there as well. It's it's a big, I mean, he's a
- 9:35big camp priest, isn't he, This guy, What did you say his name
- 9:37is? Lolum.
- 9:38Lolum. I'm going to now make a
- 9:41suggestion that they are possibly making a critique on
- 9:46organised religion. Possibly, I don't think,
- 9:48Jeffrey. I'm trying, all right.
- 9:53What you mean with the closeted gay man as the priest as well?
- 9:58I love that even the way he raises arms in this is his camp
- 10:01as his character on TV. And they haven't sort of slimmed
- 10:04him up a bit. Yahoo I wonder.
- 10:10I'm I'm not going to Google it, but I wonder what other sort of
- 10:12characters that guy played. Oh, please Google it.
- 10:15All right, go on. What's his name?
- 10:17Someone. Jevons.
- 10:18Oh, I. Don't know hang.
- 10:19On you have a look and I'll talk about religion in Doctor.
- 10:22Yeah, Yeah, you. You lay a subtext that
- 10:24definitely isn't there. Oh, I don't think the statue had
- 10:30rubies for eyes either. You know the original, No?
- 10:33It just had a big black hole I. I'm supposed to be the person
- 10:38that fulfils that role in this podcast.
- 10:40No, no, no. No, no.
- 10:43No. You seen any many big black
- 10:45holes in your life? Oh, I wanted to.
- 10:47It was played by Peter Stevens. I'm just going.
- 10:52On he did play Billy Bunter. I know that.
- 10:54Did he really? Yeah, that's that's because
- 10:57that's effect. It's his character that they
- 10:59based the character on in the Celestial Toy Maker, Peter.
- 11:04Stevens, IMDb We are learning all about a lot of dead people
- 11:09here, aren't we? He was born in 1920 and died in
- 11:131972, aged 52. That is no time to die.
- 11:18That's ten years for me. Oh.
- 11:20God, I mean, yes, 12 for me. I hope I don't die the same age
- 11:24as Billy Bunter. His last appearance was in
- 11:27something called Arthur of the Britons and his.
- 11:32Wow, that is a long profile. I think most actors will be
- 11:36quite happy with a profile that long.
- 11:38And his first appearance was 1948 in something called The
- 11:41Immortal Lady, where he played the Venetian ambassador.
- 11:44Now, is there anything that I might have on DVD that I can see
- 11:47him in? Wacko?
- 11:48I don't know what that is. Armchair Theatre.
- 11:55It's all all the same shit that everybody around this.
- 11:57This time, there's Dicks in a dark green.
- 12:00It was a sort of incestuous Paul, wasn't it?
- 12:02That they they all popped up on every single show.
- 12:05The Avengers. I haven't seen the danger man.
- 12:08Danger. Man, there you go.
- 12:09I've got. That on DVD so.
- 12:11I'll just see the tomorrow, people.
- 12:13No, the treasure shakers. But that's not to say the
- 12:16Tomorrow People won't be on here.
- 12:19What do you what do you think about this intriguing power
- 12:22struggle between the political leader of Atlantis and Professor
- 12:26Zarov? Well, it's it's a weird one
- 12:32because they're they're both like, Zarov isn't technically in
- 12:37charge, is he? He is the other guy.
- 12:39Yeah. So.
- 12:40I don't know. Yeah, I mean, I don't, I don't
- 12:43know whether it quite works. Oh, he's an Adam.
- 12:46Adamant lives. Sorry, I'm still on.
- 12:48I'm still on our mate. He isn't an episode of the
- 12:52Advent Adventures The Avengers anyway.
- 12:54Peter Stevens, we salute you and your career.
- 12:57We're sorry you died so young. Yeah, but you did a lot in that
- 13:00time. But you know, he's from a time
- 13:03where they mainly ate liver, isn't he?
- 13:06I used to eat liver when I was young and different onions.
- 13:08Yeah, that's what you did. Because me and he harm.
- 13:10Yeah. Are you sure?
- 13:14Yeah. My mind is bent because of the
- 13:15liver and onions. Professor Zaroff.
- 13:19Yeah. His plan is to destroy the whole
- 13:23of Atlantis. Yeah.
- 13:24To to be like the one scientist that managed to raise it out of
- 13:28the. Water.
- 13:29He raises it out of the water, but in doing so will destroy the
- 13:31planet. Yeah, why?
- 13:33Because, and this is down to that thing of the pulpy nature
- 13:37of the plot not being thought through.
- 13:39Because it's only a kid show. Because why not?
- 13:42It's a bonkers scheme and it doesn't make a lot of sense.
- 13:45So the only thing you can say is is because he's fucking mad.
- 13:49But like, nobody will be left alive to see his great work.
- 13:52The consequence of it I mean. No, I mean that is a flaw in his
- 13:56plan. But, and I think it is
- 13:58disgusting, this, it's sort of lightly touched over but.
- 14:02You'd have to send a boy out into space.
- 14:04That said, I did it, Professor Zarroff.
- 14:06Lots of love. With all the rubble going
- 14:08around. Yeah.
- 14:11It's a bit crazy. Oh no.
- 14:12The bits seem worried. The Doctor says to him.
- 14:14Why do you want to blow out the world?
- 14:15And he goes, You a scientist? Ask me why?
- 14:20And that's about as much depth as we get.
- 14:21What's the achievement? Trouton's arms really do?
- 14:24Change length between to see than these animations, don't
- 14:27they? They look a bit short there.
- 14:29Oh, it's worse than the fear from the day.
- 14:31It's terrible. Like somebody must have looked
- 14:34at that animation and gone you know what they are out
- 14:36proportion with his body. Well, it's because it's not
- 14:39because it's a different aspect ratio.
- 14:40They're like we need to fill the screen with something, so we'll
- 14:42just make their arms longer. That's actually, that's not a
- 14:44question I haven't asked you about actually.
- 14:46And I think it's because we're watching an animation and Oh my
- 14:49God, look at this market in the animation.
- 14:52It's massive. So much better.
- 14:53It's just a little pole in it in the original.
- 14:56I wish Polly was wearing that get up in the original as well.
- 14:59Dirty kid like, how do you write trout like?
- 15:06Is he one of your favourites? Is he one of my favourites?
- 15:09I I have real trouble writing the classic Doctors, if I'm
- 15:13perfectly honest. You love them all.
- 15:14I love them all. Even Peter Davidson.
- 15:17I don't mind, David. Your brother likes him, yeah?
- 15:20I know he does. He's my Davos, probably my least
- 15:23favorite of the classic Doctors. But then whenever I sit down to
- 15:26watch season 21 on my car, I once he's got rid of the the
- 15:31crowded kid TARDIS. I'm like, I I can get with him
- 15:34once Taylor arrives, basically. And this is fucked off I'm more
- 15:38into. Oh, it's.
- 15:40Not because of this. I just think the whole the time
- 15:42and space and you want to get back to fucking Heathrow.
- 15:46Nothing against Janet Fielding, who I think plays the role she's
- 15:49given. Great.
- 15:50I could have done with a year with Davison and Nicola Bryant.
- 15:54Yeah, me too. I think that might be.
- 15:55Quite interesting. Me too.
- 15:57Now, but yeah, I do try trouting as one of my as a kid.
- 16:02Probably not as, but in my sort of mid to late teens I would say
- 16:05trouting was my favorite at one point.
- 16:07I like the fact that he allows the Doctor to be scared.
- 16:11Yeah, with Pertwee and with Baker.
- 16:15They're always so fucking stall, aren't they?
- 16:17As I'm standing there posing on or taking the piss, whereas
- 16:20trout and dust are sort of Oh my word.
- 16:22You know what? I really like that.
- 16:24Because I think as a young man, that made me scared.
- 16:27If the doctor was scared, I was scared.
- 16:30The eras I'm most likely to revisit and classic Doctor Who
- 16:33are the 7th Doctor and the First Doctor, and then after that it's
- 16:37probably Trout and then Colin Baker.
- 16:40Why the First Doctor? I just think it's magical.
- 16:43I think it's like it's so far removed from the show we know,
- 16:47and they're sort of making it up as they go along and I just
- 16:49think it's brilliant. Oh, you know, I did a commentary
- 16:53for the Myth Makers last week and we did one to three and I
- 16:58had never really given it much consideration.
- 17:00It was a revelation how good it was.
- 17:03Bloody great, isn't it? Yeah, I mean, it's hard to
- 17:06believe it's only a season before this Sophisticated, not
- 17:11this. In the same season, you've got
- 17:13the Celestial Toy Maker, don't you?
- 17:15Which is a bag of old Dicks. Yeah, well, no, I can see what
- 17:19they're going for in Toy Maker. I just one, I can't, don't think
- 17:22they can execute you well. And two, the script went for all
- 17:25those revisions. I don't think this script went
- 17:27for any revisions at all. No, it feels like they just,
- 17:31they just did draft one who you are, make that and they
- 17:34struggle. This feels like probably don't
- 17:38do now. They're just running around.
- 17:40Chases are off, aren't. They and they they run around in
- 17:43the real version, but it just feels it feels better here
- 17:45because there's more than two sets.
- 17:48It is such a fucking This is the definition of an Episode 3.
- 17:52Runner or Business? Although it does end with Zaraf
- 17:58taking complete control and getting his guards to shoot the
- 18:02guy and shot. Oh, there it is.
- 18:03There's that scene with the Pepper.
- 18:04And he throws it through his does it through his recorder as
- 18:06well. The worst scene in this right,
- 18:09is I can't believe it made the car.
- 18:12And because we have episode 3, you can watch it as the bit
- 18:15where he goes to the the priest. Oh, I'm dying.
- 18:19Let me feel the aura of your goodness, the way of drinking
- 18:24him. Right, we're about to.
- 18:27So they're turning the fish people against everyone else to
- 18:31stop them picking the plankton. So we're about.
- 18:34To average everyday events. Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:37But it means we're about to get to everyone's one of the most
- 18:40iconic scenes and. Nothing.
- 18:41Kind of remember how it looks animated.
- 18:43Is it as good? Is it better?
- 18:45It's. Different.
- 18:46I mean, you're about to say my friend, you're about to.
- 18:47Say the original look pretty good.
- 18:49I seem to record they're just going around on Kirby Wise.
- 18:51Yeah, I like the original, but there was actual like bubbles
- 18:54you can see. Because I think what they do is
- 18:57they they're on Kirby wires in a studio, but then they put like a
- 19:00glass tank in front of it with bubbles and stuff if I remember
- 19:05correctly. These animated faces for the
- 19:07fish people look very like the prisoners that come out of the
- 19:12cells in the sharder animation. I wonder if the same people are
- 19:16doing it. You know they've.
- 19:17Just once you've drawn it, you've drawn it, haven't they?
- 19:20Yes, but shouldn't this be the companions convincing them to
- 19:24rebel? Like do we need jackals?
- 19:26No, these characters are not needed.
- 19:28Not needed at all. But it's nice to have them.
- 19:30We're already in a situation where lines are having to be
- 19:34shared between Ben and. Jamie And then you write a few
- 19:36more people. Then you add extra characters.
- 19:38I mean, that is something I've heard thrown at Chipnall before
- 19:41and I don't entirely disagree. Especially in series 12 where he
- 19:45has his huge guest casts and there ain't enough for the
- 19:48regulars to do right here. We go the banging tube, I mean.
- 20:05I'm not sure it's better than the original.
- 20:07Well, I think what is what they're doing here is like
- 20:10obviously you can't talk underwater, so it's almost like
- 20:13a sign language. In the original, the fellow
- 20:16comes down on the Kirby wire and just waves his arms to say no,
- 20:20no, stop working. What's he doing there?
- 20:23He saw a. Little dance.
- 20:25He. Gets his Dick out of the minute.
- 20:28As well. He's taking his clothes off as a
- 20:30striptease. I think it's quite elegantly
- 20:36done. I think the original might be
- 20:38better. Though it is, but you know I'm
- 20:40into this. Oh, this looks like the sort of
- 20:46thing that J&T would put on The end of The Pier at Christmas
- 20:49time, starring Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant.
- 20:55Yeah, And anybody from EastEnders, I.
- 20:57Do like the more experimental school, though, you know, I
- 21:00think Dudley can get a bit. I'm not.
- 21:04I'm not a big. Dudley Guy, I do like bits of
- 21:06it, but I just like you say it's too repetitive.
- 21:08By the time we get to the Tom Baker era, I'm really, like, I'm
- 21:11really bored of Dudley Simpson. You listen to his scores in
- 21:13Trouton's time, though. Yeah.
- 21:15So like the ice wars, is that. Sort of.
- 21:17Yeah, he's really trying. It feels like in the Tom Baker
- 21:20era, he's he's phoning it in. And then you listen to Blake
- 21:22Seven, It's like, oh, it's basically the same.
- 21:24Same music, yeah. Yeah, with this four piece of a
- 21:27band. And anything that's sort of
- 21:30done, it's it's like Douglas Adams is writing, doing
- 21:33hitchhikers and doing the Pirate Planet.
- 21:35There's overlap. It's like you listen to, oh God,
- 21:38I'm going way off now, but you listen to Dalek War and Jubilee,
- 21:43which is done exactly the same time.
- 21:45They sound very similar. They share actors, you know, I
- 21:48think, yeah, if you're doing a lot at the same time, then oh,
- 21:52here we go. Sarah off just fainted.
- 21:54Oh God, I'm having a heart attack.
- 21:58A lot of people don't have heart attacks in Doctor Who.
- 22:00It's not really the the way to dispatch people.
- 22:04I can't think of many, you know. People die of fright in the.
- 22:10She was found in the barn, paralysed with fear.
- 22:12She may have seen something. Oh, this shit you see is coming
- 22:19up in a minute. Shitty scene.
- 22:22This is Doctor Who. There are no shitty scenes.
- 22:24Dylan allowed me to feel the aura of your goodness.
- 22:28Look at the way the tentacles come down in this this animated
- 22:32version of Amdo. Yeah, Amdo before just looked a
- 22:35bit shit, but Amdo here feels like a God of the sea.
- 22:39So they're all sort of praising the set in the documentary
- 22:43really, but I think for the time for the money.
- 22:45I suppose it's a big man in the middle of a set.
- 22:48Yeah. All right, You can do a lot of
- 22:50things with a big mouth. You can.
- 22:53I wonder what did all those sets just got jumped right?
- 22:56Yeah. Even even the special wall.
- 22:59Well, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter.
- 23:01Things I kept you recently broken.
- 23:03News to me that fabulous props and things were destroyed in
- 23:07terrible fires. Yeah, those were the props
- 23:09though. That's different.
- 23:11But this I miss. But of course you wouldn't keep
- 23:12sets of what we're talking about.
- 23:13Whenever we make a set, we get rid of it and destroy it.
- 23:16Well, other productions are going to use the face of amdo.
- 23:19I don't. Know I might have.
- 23:20I might have used for it. Put it in my living room.
- 23:24Need a telly. We could just have the face of
- 23:25AMDO there. It's like that story that Barry,
- 23:27let's tell us about Agador from Monster Repelled on, isn't it?
- 23:30He kept the statue and put it outside his office.
- 23:34Yeah, it's like to ward people off and things like that.
- 23:37When they realised that they, he had a prop there, they were
- 23:40absolutely livid. Higher ups, yeah.
- 23:43Well, John Perk, we kept Bock, the model of Bock and Peter
- 23:46Purvis kept the trial logic going from.
- 23:50Oh my God. And did you hear about that?
- 23:51He he threw it away, didn't he? Yeah.
- 23:53Because he got no work and he thought it was cursed.
- 23:56Then he, years later, he's like, I'm going to wait a fucking
- 23:58fortune with that. Oh, that bit there, right where
- 24:02after the aura of your goodness where he stabbed him with the
- 24:05the spear on the screen, right. You don't see it going in, you
- 24:09just see the spear go down and then it sort of wobbles in in
- 24:13screen. It's terrible.
- 24:16It's all very theatre, isn't it? But as you say, like they
- 24:20they've got the same resources as Doug Dougie Canfield did.
- 24:24Can I ask you a question as a, as a person that works on
- 24:27television now, do you think that performance styles have
- 24:34improved? I know they've changed because
- 24:36think this basically was theatre on the television to your
- 24:40preference how things change for the better, because I feel like
- 24:44things are a lot more naturalistic now.
- 24:46I mean, yes, I think they have, but it depends what you want
- 24:48from your entertainment, doesn't it?
- 24:50Like, I love nothing more than sitting and watching an old bit
- 24:53of 60s TV with a massive performance, but I would never
- 24:56like. I think it would be a dangerous
- 24:58thing to work on something like that now, unless it was a spoof
- 25:01like Toast of London. Or what was that inside number
- 25:0591 where they were aping 60s and 70s television Devil Devil of
- 25:09Christmas. The Graham Harper directed one.
- 25:12You see now all of this is done as comedy now isn't it?
- 25:16As a piss take. But again, and I'm sure we've
- 25:19said this before on this podcast, you show this versus
- 25:23the Pyramids of Mars to somebody now and they will think it's
- 25:26both the same style of acting. What I think they prefer this
- 25:29though. Yeah, this is a lot of fun.
- 25:30They'd have a laugh. I thought Pyramids of Mars would
- 25:33probably come across as a bit boring, to be perfectly honest.
- 25:35He's. Not keen on pyramids.
- 25:36Of Mars. Sorry, Jeremy Bentham.
- 25:38No, it's great. I'm just using it as an example
- 25:40as a classic, you know, they're like a much lauded classic from
- 25:45times gone by. I know that Jeremy Bentham, when
- 25:51he could go on Toby Halo's oh God, what's it called?
- 25:55His His commentary podcast. He chose.
- 25:58I think it was the Dialect's master plan or something like
- 26:00that. You know, proper Doctor Who, you
- 26:03know, not this new stuff. Proper Doctor Who?
- 26:06New woke stuff, won't you? This is called Black Man in it.
- 26:13Yeah, but it didn't back in the day, did it?
- 26:15Yeah, Jacko. Oh yeah.
- 26:16No, Yeah. And.
- 26:18An Irishman. It's got a gay man in it.
- 26:22Yeah, Lola the priest. Oh God, who's got so woke?
- 26:26What? What Lola the priest did to
- 26:28Ando's mouth that when the camera was down, you don't want
- 26:31to know. Oh.
- 26:32No, I do don't see it please. There isn't a huge amount of
- 26:37women in this society though, is there?
- 26:38No, there's Ara and that's it. Yeah, so the priest.
- 26:42They saw Polly and all their eyes lit up.
- 26:47Yeah, that priest probably seen a fair bit of action then.
- 26:52I think is this in the episode? I think it is, yeah.
- 26:54Plus, yeah, we've shot through this one.
- 26:56Yeah, well, it's. Oh, here we go.
- 26:58Your people, your people. They are my people.
- 27:02The accent is all over the place, but ultimately Zara's won
- 27:06the power struggle here, hasn't he?
- 27:08Yeah. Oh, for sure.
- 27:09Well, what about trouting in Enemy of the World?
- 27:13That accent was all over the place.
- 27:14As well. I mean, people are quick to
- 27:16criticize this guy, but like, it wouldn't pass today's standards,
- 27:20would it? I'd love salamander.
- 27:22Me too. You try, you fail.
- 27:23So, uh, huh. The moon doesn't fall out of the
- 27:26sky. Sit down.
- 27:28Have a drink. I used to quote that from about
- 27:31the age of 10 to people. Have you have you read the comic
- 27:35with Salamander in? Is there?
- 27:37What? Oh yeah, we covered it on Too
- 27:38Hot for TV but about 18 months ago.
- 27:41Well, I've heard all your episodes.
- 27:42How about that's? A fair doctor story?
- 27:45Fucking brilliant. So Doctor and Salamander.
- 27:47Written by Paul Cornell and it's fucking brilliant.
- 27:52Oh, here we go. Yeah.
- 27:54What a guy. Nothing in the world will stop
- 27:56him now, except possibly death by drowning.
- 27:59Yes, Which he should have foreseen coming Living in
- 28:02Atlantis, really, shouldn't he? Can I ask, are you still as
- 28:06gripped by the underwater menace?
- 28:07Oh, I've been thoroughly gripped.
- 28:11I'll let go then. He wants to be there, yeah.
