Transcript
- 0:32Speaker 1: What is happening everybody, this is Dave Croft, and welcome back to another Q review where I feature a Q written by you, a member of the 52 Qs community, and I provide feedback like you might get from a potential library or a music supervisor.
- 0:47Speaker 1: So today we are checking out an orchestral sports Q called Rising to the Top by Mike Breitigam, so we're going to take a listen to it and then talk about it on the other side.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Alright, that was Rising to the Top by Mike Breitigam.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Again, mike, thank you so much for sending this along.
- 2:19Speaker 1: This was sent along during our week 38 weekly feedback threads and I do like this.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Some really good orchestral programming here and some really solid thematic work.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Now you had mentioned that you were looking to going for an epic orchestral sports Q and in my mind when I think epic, I think either more trailery and a little bit more, maybe in a minor key, you know, more kind of Marvel movie vibe to it and, just in my experience, in kind of the sports Qs, this feels maybe a little too magical, maybe a little bit too.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It almost feels like opening credits for a fantasy movie or like a like like Spy Kids or World of Tomorrow or, you know that kind of Disney kind of, and I think it's actually you know what it sounds like.
- 3:25Speaker 1: It sounds like music I would hear at Epcot and that's.
- 3:30Speaker 1: That's not a bag, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, that's, that's not a pejorative there.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I mean that's some amazingly orchestrated music and and I think it might be a little too, might be a little too stop and starty for for sports Qs and it might not just have enough to do with you know what I mean, to be kind of, to be kind of epic.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I like it.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I'm just not sure, like I'm trying to think of, of how it could find a home and I think maybe if we kind of bent it into trailer shape a little bit, where we have really kind of clearly defined three act structures or four act Depending, where we have kind of an act one where we set the stage and act two where we increase the energy, good, strong edit point, and then an act three where it really really kind of gets big, which we kind of have.
- 4:39Speaker 1: So it's a little short.
- 4:42Speaker 1: You know, usually trailer cues are gonna run closer to two to two and a half minutes, minute thirty, and I do know that this is a revision and I think, and I think we we sped up the tempo and so with that, with that in mind, we might, we might need to extend this a little bit more.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like, I feel like I could totally hear this in a theme park as a, as a thing, you know, like welcome to the Welcome to the world of tomorrow pavilion, sponsored by, ironically, an oil company, that's.
- 5:24Speaker 1: That's true, that's a true story.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Oh and, and your button.
- 5:31Speaker 1: We need a much more pronounced button or something like that Kind of goes out on a, on a whimper here, a little squeak kind of with your piccolo or trumpet, and so I think we need a much more pronounced Button here.
- 5:52Speaker 1: So at the end of the day, I think we have something good here.
- 5:56Speaker 1: It feels a little too thematic.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I'm not sure how it would work in sports.
- 5:59Speaker 1: It doesn't give me epic vibes when it's, it's, I don't know, epic music t tends to be a little bit more minor, possibly more kind of Uplifting and and and if we were going to go in that direction, then maybe bend it more into trailer shape and I can actually kind of show you a trailer.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Here is a cue that I wrote, called who will rise, just to kind of show you Kind of how, how like these uplifting trailers would go and even this is still in kind of a minor key here then we add more energy, then we build Big edit point, which you have some really good edit points in yours, but then yeah, right and so.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So I think we're gonna need a little bit more of that type of energy to really pull off epic.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And it may be about strings, it may be about needing more string, ostinatos, but this feels more like a flying type of a montage, type of a cube, so I'm not sure if it will get any love in the sports arena.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Another thing to keep in mind our loudness is getting a little.
- 7:31Speaker 1: We're getting a little loud here.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Overall, the mix is pretty good.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I would watch some of the lows if we were to look.
- 7:48Speaker 1: We're getting a lot of rumble down around.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You know 50 Hertz and below, which is the low end rumble, from some of the percussion, specifically the percussion going into the reverb.
- 8:05Speaker 1: So I think we need to be careful, careful with that.
- 8:13Speaker 1: But other than that, the mix itself is pretty good.
- 8:17Speaker 1: As far as the title, I think the title is spot on, rising to the top 100%.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I really, really dig that.
- 8:25Speaker 1: So thank you so much, mike, for sending this along.
- 8:29Speaker 1: As I mentioned, this was sent along during our week 38 weekly feedback threads and we put weekly feedback threads together every single week and currently we are collecting for a week 39.
- 8:40Speaker 1: And so if you would like to have your cube featured over here on the YouTube on the 52 Cues YouTube channel and the podcast, then you can submit yours.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And if you found that feedback helpful and you would like feedback on your own cues, then you can head over to 52Cuescom slash coaching and order up your own feedback video where I would unpack everything just like I did for Mike here today, but otherwise that's gonna do it for me.
