- 1:00Welcome back, everybody. Episode 140 this evening we're
- 1:04going to be talking about load truck time, return to DU and of
- 1:11shift duties, all that good stuff.
- 1:13How was your weekend, your Thanksgiving, Josh?
- 1:17It was a week. It was pretty good on Monday, I
- 1:22guess I was delivering. I my hardship had her flag up.
- 1:27So I went and hold it out. It was in a small Amazon box
- 1:31with a card taped to it saying happy Thanksgiving mail carrier.
- 1:35OK fine, great, you know. And she usually gives me snacks
- 1:40and stuff. So I just popped the box open
- 1:43and it was this little Angel figurine in it.
- 1:47I'm like, oh that's nice, that's cool and everything.
- 1:49It wasn't until I got home and open cards and realized it was
- 1:55not from her, but from one of the, you know, a friend of hers
- 2:02who used to live in that neighborhood and moved away five
- 2:05years ago. They got there together, which
- 2:07made it even more special. Thanksgiving was good.
- 2:11It was just us, my sister-in-law and her two kids.
- 2:15We went to my father in law's house, so it was small until we
- 2:19were getting ready to sit down at the table and she realized
- 2:22that she forgot to bring the stuffing with her.
- 2:24So it was it was what it was we're getting.
- 2:28You know, we bought a rotisserie chicken and a box of stove top
- 2:32tonight to make up for it. So that was dinner tonight.
- 2:37Things are starting to settle down a little bit at the at
- 2:41work. So that's a plus.
- 2:43Meow, how was your week? My week was mostly good because
- 2:47I didn't work very much this week.
- 2:50You know, I, my kid was off of school so I, I took off Saturday
- 2:56so that I had leave in conjunction with my relief day
- 2:58so I wouldn't be mandated. So I was off Thursday, Friday,
- 3:02Saturday and then today. So not really wanting to go back
- 3:06to work tomorrow, but Monday trying to think of what happened
- 3:11Monday. It was a Monday and then the
- 3:15Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving weren't too bad.
- 3:18The parcels I think were increased.
- 3:23But then Wednesday morning, this is probably like a, the low of
- 3:27the week, you know, not years past.
- 3:31My office usually would do a like a potluck or we would do
- 3:34like a themed potluck. And a lot of the time I'm
- 3:38usually one of the ones who helps try and organize it too.
- 3:40And with my station manager, you know, just to bring on some
- 3:45camaraderie. And this year they didn't want
- 3:48to do it. So it was like whatever, OK, But
- 3:54like we clocked in and our start time is 8:30 and my morning
- 4:00supervisor calls us all for a stand up and just any including
- 4:05the rule side. Normally like they will only do
- 4:08a stand up on the City side and most like if they think that
- 4:13it's prevalent to rule, they'll call us over.
- 4:15And so this morning she called us all over that we none of us
- 4:19had grabbed any of our mail yet. So we all run over there and
- 4:23she, I know that she's talking a loud voice so that everybody can
- 4:29hear her, but the way that she speaks, it's like berating.
- 4:35So she gives us this giant stand up about how we're not doing our
- 4:44SPM scans correctly and we're missing partial scans.
- 4:50And just like just kind of it was kind of berating and it
- 4:56wasn't even like a, you know, I understand like management has
- 5:02to do that, but they're to, they have to address the issue.
- 5:06But there's still like a way to do it and not and be respect,
- 5:11I'm sorry and be respectful about how they're presenting
- 5:16that information to us. So all of us are just glazed
- 5:23over that they want us to scan the scans and not hit already
- 5:28passed and hit. What was it?
- 5:31They want us to hit no more to scan instead of already passed.
- 5:35It's their flavor of the of the last few months.
- 5:38But there was no hey, thank, thank you guys and over approach
- 5:42to peak and it's going to get crazy and I'm thankful for all
- 5:47of you. It was nothing like that.
- 5:48So like at the end of it, I, I being, I try and be a little
- 5:54jokey sometimes. And so I told, I went to tell
- 5:58like the Subs especially like, hey, I, I'm thankful for you
- 6:02guys, 'cause I 'cause I am, I'm thankful for my coworkers.
- 6:06And even though management may not tell us that and they just
- 6:10want to berate us for missing SPM scans, sorry, we didn't scan
- 6:15flats and letters, you know, you know, we us carriers look out
- 6:20for each other, You know, same on the City side, even this.
- 6:23And then the City side, they were splitting all these routes.
- 6:25So it was like, you're going to waste time telling us all this.
- 6:29And then it's just, it's just ridiculous.
- 6:32Yeah. So, but after that, I mean,
- 6:36Thanksgiving was really good. We had, I had, I was the host,
- 6:40so I had to hurry and kind of clean my house.
- 6:45And so my whole family was over here and it was kind of
- 6:48overwhelming inside my house, but I purposely took off the
- 6:52time because my, my kid was off school.
- 6:55And most of the time that I take off is usually for, for union
- 6:59events. So I, I took this time to right
- 7:03before I know it's getting into the crazy time and I won't be
- 7:07home as much. So I took off time with my kid.
- 7:10So to be with my family and my kid, you know.
- 7:13So how was your week, Kristen? Oh, it was a week.
- 7:20Oh, Monday was a 12 hour day. That that sucked really bad.
- 7:25Well, I clocked out five minutes shy of a 12 hour day, but still
- 7:30close enough. Tuesday was a 10 hour day.
- 7:34That's the heaviest Tuesday I've had in a while.
- 7:36Mail, mail, mail. But it took Wednesday off so I
- 7:39could get ready for dinner, make my pies, and prep all my food.
- 7:44And Thursday morning, my son calls to say, hey, because of
- 7:49the weather, we're not coming up.
- 7:51So it was my parents and my son did not make it.
- 7:54So it was just, you know, Ruby Kingston, Eric and I.
- 7:58And then Eric's son Logan popped in just for dinner.
- 8:01Was it wasn't too bad. It was just us.
- 8:04And then Friday actually wasn't bad.
- 8:07I, I was expecting worse. I was one of the lucky ones in
- 8:11the office. I didn't have a second trip.
- 8:13I was done under evaluation. To me it looked like like normal
- 8:20average Monday is what Friday felt like to me.
- 8:23I was kind of like going around going.
- 8:25Are you sure there's not a hamper or hamper of partials
- 8:27hiding from me somewhere? Because everybody else has
- 8:32hampers stacked of second trips and well, I still have room in
- 8:36my truck. Not complaining though.
- 8:38And then I worked my K day yesterday and it was a light
- 8:43day. I had one tray of DPS 1/2, a
- 8:46tray of pull down and 175 parcels, but which was actually
- 8:53less than I had. No, it was more than I had on
- 8:56Friday parcel wise at 230 Monday.
- 8:59So scans it was, it was a week I Ruby took my car in on Monday to
- 9:06had to get a new auxiliary and regular battery and oil change.
- 9:10And next thing I know I'm getting a phone call saying
- 9:13something's wrong with my car. She had to take it back.
- 9:16And I'm like, well, place that she goes is on my mail route.
- 9:21So they know me and that's where I normally take my car anyways.
- 9:25So when you have a 19 year old telling you stuff, you don't
- 9:28know what the Hell's going on. So I, I ended up missing a
- 9:34package on that part of the route anyway.
- 9:36So that just gave me an excuse to drive back up there and go
- 9:39see what was going on with my car.
- 9:41And it turned out my oil filter housing slash oil cooler is what
- 9:46it's called on my Jeep Compass was dented in a weird spot.
- 9:50So, but we're thinking, because I was talking to the kid
- 9:54Wednesday after it was fixed, when I went to go pick it up and
- 9:57I was talking to the one guy because when I went up there, I
- 10:00was hot. I mean, I was like, what the
- 10:02hell did they do to my car? You know, And then when I was
- 10:06talking to the guy that manages that location and it was found
- 10:10like it was pretty much I just wanted to confirm that it was
- 10:12something that was there prior to taking my car in.
- 10:17And, and so when I went pick the car up Wednesday after it was
- 10:20fixed and I was talking to the other guy because there's two
- 10:23guys in there. I trust the one I talked to
- 10:24Monday and the one I was talking to Wednesday and they and I were
- 10:28talking, I said, well, do you remember when we had that issue
- 10:31a while ago, you know, first year or so I had the car,
- 10:36whatever I said, and I left and you called me back right away to
- 10:40come back because the car, because the oil was leaking.
- 10:42He's like, yeah, I said, and the owner of the shop at the time
- 10:45was there and he was down in the pit and he didn't understand it
- 10:49either because the oil filter looked fine and whatnot.
- 10:52And he kind of he looked at me and he's like, I wonder, I said,
- 10:55I wonder if that was a manufacturer defect.
- 10:57And it finally, just because I wonder if this was a blessing in
- 11:00disguise. I said exactly.
- 11:01And he's like, you know, because that was pretty much doing the
- 11:04exact same thing. I'm not going to tell these guys
- 11:07about the previous time. I said no, no, don't do that.
- 11:11So that was an extra 200 bucks out of my pocket.
- 11:13But cars fixed cars running 2 new batteries could.
- 11:17Have been a lot. Worse, Yeah, I mean, because I
- 11:20they were changing filters and it was spraying and they
- 11:23couldn't figure out and they, it was something on the inside that
- 11:28housing that was dented or whatever.
- 11:31Because I even asked him, I said where is that actually located?
- 11:34Is it something that, you know, something could have hit it, you
- 11:37know, up off the road or run over something or whatever.
- 11:41And he's like, not really. I mean, he was worried about it
- 11:44when they were telling him because he wasn't there Monday.
- 11:46He was worried about which engine is that because some of
- 11:48them they screw, right, the oil filter screws right into the
- 11:51engine block. He's like, guys engine block,
- 11:54you know, And then when they told me he's like, oh, good,
- 11:56that's just the cooler. That's 2 bolts, not a big deal.
- 12:00And so that, you know, we got lucky on that.
- 12:03But yeah, so even the he, he and I agreed that was more like a
- 12:07blessing in disguise because they even put the premium filter
- 12:10on and it sprayed worse than the cheaper ones.
- 12:14And then they went back and they felt and they went back and
- 12:16looked at the original filter that they took off to the car
- 12:19and they could see where the sleek seal was about ready to
- 12:21slip. So I said sound like most likely
- 12:24a manager defect that just overtime got worse.
- 12:28He's like that's I wouldn't doubt it.
- 12:31So thankfully we got that taken care of because they all know
- 12:34how much I drive my car so. Yeah, Oh my gosh.
- 12:38Yep. I said yeah, because the last
- 12:39time I got the oil changes wouldn't like the day before I
- 12:42left for Florida, they're like, Oh yeah, remember you were
- 12:44talking about you're going to Orlando the next morning.
- 12:46I said yeah. And last year I went to Reno and
- 12:48back, so we got that. I need.
- 12:50It and then Tuesday when I got. It I said 200, better than two
- 12:56grand if it yeah, down the road. Exactly.
- 13:01So thankfully, because you know, I've only had this car for 2 1/2
- 13:05years now, so thankfully it wasn't major.
- 13:08It was 600 bucks we dumped into it between Monday and Wednesday
- 13:12but Oh well. And then Tuesday when I got off
- 13:16the route, my supervisor was so happy.
- 13:19I mean she was holding herself back from texting me or calling
- 13:21me on the route to let me know that district finally approved
- 13:25for the use of the LLV in the Christmas parade on Saturday the
- 13:296th. So we've already decided we're
- 13:32going to do all hands on deck and since it is the first day of
- 13:36Christmas overtime period, I said if my route gets slammed
- 13:40with packages please call me. I will come in and run packages
- 13:43so we can get everybody back. So as of right now, I have my K
- 13:46day off for Saturday. So but I did offer, I said I'll
- 13:50have no problems coming in and running packages in my car just
- 13:53so we can get people done because parade lineup starts at
- 13:575:15. So but I did, I got a six foot
- 14:00tall light up Santa hat that says Merry Christmas on it to
- 14:04put on top of the LLV. Postmasters offered to get
- 14:07lights for it, but I've already got all that covered.
- 14:10So yeah, we're gonna, whoever volunteers to come walk
- 14:16alongside with the LLV. I just put a Facebook blast out
- 14:20in our local groups that we're going to be picking up Santa
- 14:24letters along the parade route as well.
- 14:27I know. And even my postmaster said
- 14:30she'd buy pizza for everybody afterwards and we'll just have
- 14:34to go pick it up when we get done so.
- 14:37Help with that? Yeah, so, but yeah, yeah, it'll
- 14:41be fun. I finally it, I've had this idea
- 14:43of wanting to do it for a few years and we finally put it in
- 14:46motion. Kind of cool.
- 14:48And then I got my national conventions proceedings in the
- 14:51mail yesterday too. So I was kind of shocked because
- 14:54I walked in from loading the truck and envelope sitting at my
- 14:57case. I'm like, oh, take care, you
- 14:59dropped it off to my case. I wasn't expecting that, but
- 15:01cool. Thanks.
- 15:03Well, that's even better. Oh, I know.
- 15:06I'm like, what is this? And then I saw and I was like,
- 15:09oh, that's my, oh, I know what this is.
- 15:15Yeah. There's some gems in there.
- 15:17It's a good book. It's a good read.
- 15:19I haven't, I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I,
- 15:23you know, dealing with the fact that I have, I've been out of my
- 15:27allergy medication since Tuesday.
- 15:29My allergy and sinus stuff that I have to take year round.
- 15:32It's horrible trust me. So I've been out since Tuesday
- 15:37and it is now catching up with me.
- 15:39So today has been completely rough.
- 15:41So I apologize guys. I'm probably going to mute
- 15:45myself quite a bit so y'all don't have to listen to me
- 15:47blowing my nose and sneezing constantly right now as it's
- 15:52been all day fun. Tomorrow's going to stop.
- 15:56Fun times. I guess I'll have to find the
- 15:58one of the empty bottles and give it to Ruby and the
- 16:02boyfriend so they can go get me more tomorrow because
- 16:05unfortunately it's one of those off brands that only Walmart
- 16:09sells. I haven't been able to and it's
- 16:11the only one that works for me. So yeah.
- 16:13Do you guys have any Walmarts in your in your town?
- 16:16No, my closest Walmart is 15 miles away.
- 16:19Oh geez, there's like one on my way home from work.
- 16:23Yeah, no, no, we, no, no Walmart with it.
- 16:27You know, it's a 20 minute drive to Walmart, so anything else is
- 16:31an hour to two hours away for us, unfortunately.
- 16:34And that's the only stuff that works for me.
- 16:35So I am suffering what is? But you know, we push through it
- 16:39all. Yeah, we're rule carriers.
- 16:42We push through it. Yeah.
- 16:45I've worked through pneumonia a couple times.
- 16:48I you know, I'm not going to mention how many times of COVID,
- 16:52Yeah, you know, it happens. So.
- 16:56Yep, we do. We do punch through we do.
- 16:59Male pregnant. I never did.
- 17:02That I. Never did that but I have I I
- 17:06have worked with my knee in an immobilizer when I injured it on
- 17:12my left leg. That was fun.
- 17:15No, that was I left or my right I don't remember.
- 17:19That was fun, trying to drive the POV straddling.
- 17:24But yeah, I mean, we do. We push through it.
- 17:26So I'm going to be pushing through it tomorrow and let's
- 17:29just hope somebody doesn't say something to me in the wrong.
- 17:31Don't. I need my allergy medicine.
- 17:36Leave me alone, the claws will come out since best you just
- 17:41don't talk to me, OK? Got it.
- 17:44When you do like a infomercial, we're rule carriers.
- 17:47We do it, we push through it. Make it a cheer, you know.
- 17:53Yeah, but we enough is enough. We'll carry your splash through
- 17:59it. I.
- 18:04I did get one of my new holiday T-shirts in to where that the
- 18:08one that says I, I. I think I'll just Jingle part or
- 18:13some of the way. I'm tired.
- 18:16It's got Christmas lights. We got our.
- 18:22We got our first big snowfall last night today, and it's the
- 18:29heavy, wet stuff because it's still kind of warm out there and
- 18:32it sucks, so tomorrow's going to suck even more.
- 18:36But yeah. Slushy.
- 18:38Yeah, yeah. So guys, let's.
- 18:41Get this. Rolling What was that, Josh?
- 18:44Supposed to be wet here for most of the week and I don't like it.
- 18:48Yeah, well, I'll, I'll trade you.
- 18:50Eat that ugly white stuff. I don't want the ugly white.
- 18:54Stuff, at least where you're at, people almost know how to drive
- 18:57and they know how to clear the roads well, but people tend to
- 19:01you're they talk about. That and people don't remember
- 19:04how to drive in it and they just.
- 19:06Amnesia. Well, this is true.
- 19:09Yeah. Amnesia.
- 19:10You're driving in the snow. They talk about, they talk about
- 19:13it, and the city shuts down for a week.
- 19:17Right. You see a snowflake in the air
- 19:19and everything shuts down. Yeah, You see, we, we, you know,
- 19:23I, I laugh when you guys say we got snow and it's like this
- 19:27dusting and I'm going. That looks like frost to me.
- 19:31It ain't snow, but yeah. OK, well, let's get this going.
- 19:38I should say what at least what real snow looks like.
- 19:42You're originally from Penn? Yeah, as I said, I'm from
- 19:46Philly. I know what real snow looks
- 19:48like. But you've forgotten over time,
- 19:53Slowly, I. I was just looking at the snow
- 19:55reports from where I used to live, where my original office
- 19:59was when I first started in Gaylord and some of the areas
- 20:02they got anywhere between above to 24 inches over Thanksgiving
- 20:06and I just keep thinking to myself I do not miss the winters
- 20:10there because I learned to deliver mail in Blizzard
- 20:13conditions. Yeah.
- 20:16I learned how to straddle APOV in Blizzard conditions so I'm
- 20:22glad I don't get it. You got like the the parcel in
- 20:24your arms and you're just like, like chucking through the
- 20:29there's no shovel driveway yet. Oh yeah, I I've gone and seen a
- 20:34mailbox get taken out by a plow and mail is strewn across the
- 20:38ditch in waist deep snow. And yes, I have.
- 20:41I was at RCA that got out and picked all that mail up.
- 20:48Oh yeah. You know, got to protect the
- 20:50integrity of. The mail from the snow.
- 20:53Oh. Yeah.
- 20:54So, OK guys, So what are we going to start with first load
- 20:59truck start load in I would do, I thought we would do the.
- 21:04Express deviation first, because yes, it's the easiest of them.
- 21:08Yes, that. Is so just to kind of.
- 21:11Do you want to do that or do you want to just follow the I'm
- 21:14sorry, I said you want to do that or just follow the day as
- 21:17it would go? No, I wanted to do this one
- 21:20first because this one there's not a lot and I, I think that
- 21:23there's a lot of more. There's, there's more confusion
- 21:26with express deviation, I think than the others, maybe because
- 21:30and the other stuff I think is more straightforward than that
- 21:33what this is. But So what we're basically
- 21:37going to be talking about is your actual time events that
- 21:41happen each day on your route and in the office.
- 21:47So when the engineers and even in the old mail count system,
- 21:51there were certain times that it used to be called, was it column
- 21:55seventeen time was what it was called for the load time, right
- 21:59And so like. Load 17 was miscellaneous,
- 22:03forget which, you know what. Was the load.
- 22:04Time I I forget what column number that was, but it was it
- 22:07was the load time. OK.
- 22:10They would say they come out there with you, they would have
- 22:13a counter, come out there with a stopwatch and they would time
- 22:17you and watch you load your vehicle so you put the
- 22:20conveyance back to where it belongs.
- 22:22Yeah. So thankfully with RX we don't
- 22:26have to have that happen because I know the counters would have
- 22:29to sit there with you for the two weeks of the count or
- 22:32however long the count was and follow you, you have to go, I
- 22:36need a counter to go with me to load.
- 22:39But so when the engineers were designing RX and they were doing
- 22:44the the study and seeing the different miscellaneous things
- 22:49that we do as rule carriers, they determined that there is
- 22:54certain activities that it's, it's you can't really put a
- 22:59standard to. And so, and those three things
- 23:04are the end of shift times, the load time and the express
- 23:08deviation. And so all your other things
- 23:12that you do have a set amount that a standard, standard
- 23:17minutes that are you're evaluated for based off of how
- 23:22many times or how many items you have and even even your foot
- 23:28measurements. So what they said in the
- 23:32comprehensive guide, and I'm going to this is page 19 of the
- 23:36of the NRLCA comprehensive guide to RREX revised to four 2025,
- 23:42because that was the last time it was revised, which it wasn't
- 23:45revised very much, but that's a whole nother.
- 23:47Sorry, sorry, so the end of shift period is also very
- 23:51difficult to measure. Many possible activities can
- 23:53occur in the office at the end of the day.
- 23:56Different activities are performed on different routes,
- 23:58and different activities are performed on the same route on
- 24:02different days. Once again, the Panel concluded
- 24:04that it would be impractical and expensive to develop to develop
- 24:09engineered standards and data capture procedures for many of
- 24:12the short activities performed during this period.
- 24:15Deviation for express mail delivery is a relatively rare
- 24:19event. Many express mail deliveries are
- 24:22full, are fully integrated with mail delivery, and do not
- 24:25require any deviation from the basic route and normal direct
- 24:29delivery door deliveries. When deviation is required,
- 24:33there is no set procedure governing how it occurs.
- 24:36That is, no standardization of where the carrier departs from
- 24:41and returns to the basic route, and no uniformity and whether
- 24:45the deviation is made on foot or by a combination of driving and
- 24:49walking. Capturing and assigning time to
- 24:51irregular traffic travel patterns of this sort is
- 24:55extremely difficult with GPS technology.
- 24:58Given the great difficulty of using the engineered standards
- 25:01in this context and the relatively small contribution to
- 25:04the activity makes to the overall route evaluation, the
- 25:08panel opted to direct opted for direct measurement of actual
- 25:13time. So express deviation let me pull
- 25:17up. Sorry, I thought I had
- 25:19everything up and I do not. I'm pulling up the RX activity
- 25:25scan. I'm sorry, I thought I had it
- 25:27all the way up and a shift coverage.
- 25:31So express deviation on the RX activity scans is activity scan
- 25:39F which is start deviation and it states upon leaving the
- 25:43official line of travel to deliver priority mail express.
- 25:47This is the this is only. This is used only when required
- 25:50to deviate to make committed delivery time for priority mail
- 25:54express. No other types of deviation are
- 25:57covered under this selection. And then end deviation, which is
- 26:01G, is upon returning to the official line of travel from
- 26:05delivering Priority mail expressed.
- 26:08This is used only when required to deviate to make committed
- 26:11delivery time for Priority Mail Express.
- 26:14No other types of deviation are covered under this section.
- 26:18And what's different with this RX scan compared to the other
- 26:21ones of your of your, your timed ones that you'll have it'll have
- 26:27a start and an end to your RX scan menu will only leave that
- 26:30up. This one does not.
- 26:33So you'll have to remember to hit the end if you've started
- 26:36it. So the most common that I'm
- 26:42going to use because this is also express deviation is kind
- 26:46of changed since a lot of this information was all written and
- 26:51came out. They changed the express time
- 26:54from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. So it's been a lot easier for us
- 26:59as rural carriers who get the express to its to its delivery
- 27:04point in that time frame. But that is not always the case.
- 27:09So like, let's say you know, Friday, Friday was the day after
- 27:12Thanksgiving and you knew you weren't going to leave the
- 27:16office until like 2:00 and you had an express and you were
- 27:21going to come back to the office till probably like 7.
- 27:24We'll just say that if you can't make that express by 6:00 PM,
- 27:30you're going to get as close as you can to like that point in
- 27:35the route before that time. And then you're going to hit
- 27:39start deviation on your scan scanner, on the RX scan and then
- 27:44you're going to go deliver the express.
- 27:46And then you're going to get back to that point in your line
- 27:49of travel. And then you'll hit end
- 27:50deviation. If another scenario that could
- 27:55happen is, and this is also, I'm going to face all of this by
- 28:01saying it's, this is management also requiring you to do this.
- 28:05So if you know that you haven't expressed that you're not going
- 28:09to make it by 6:00 PM, I would communicate that with
- 28:12management, be like, hey, like I'm not going to leave till
- 28:152:00. I'm going to have to use my
- 28:16express deviation just so that you have it up front with them
- 28:20if you are on your route. And I going to preface this by
- 28:25also saying management shouldn't be texting you on the scanners,
- 28:30shouldn't really be texting you at all.
- 28:32But I know that this is happening.
- 28:35So I'm going to provide you with this information.
- 28:38If management is requiring you at some point in your route to
- 28:43deviate and come back to the office for an express piece of
- 28:47mail. The moment that you leave your
- 28:51line of travel to come back for the Express and then go deliver
- 28:55it or, or if, if you're just going to that point, sorry, I'm
- 29:02going to get real meta here. If you're just going back to
- 29:05that point because you're going to make the Express before 6:00
- 29:08PM, that's when you would hit end deviation.
- 29:11Does that make sense, Josh? They lose everybody.
- 29:14No, it makes sense to me. OK.
- 29:17OK. No, it and it and it is
- 29:21explicitly for express mail. Yes.
- 29:25So let's say in that scenario, management wants you to come
- 29:29back for an Express and where you leave off and you start that
- 29:34deviations. If that express was for a spot
- 29:37already on a part of the mail route you've already passed, you
- 29:41would stay under the start deviation until you deliver it.
- 29:46And then when you get back to the point where you left off to
- 29:49go retrieve it is when you would end it.
- 29:52Yes. So if yeah, Yep, those are yeah.
- 29:56That that's the other scenario that it would work in.
- 30:00I and I said it to Josh. Oh, Josh is going to come back
- 30:03in because he's I know that he's done this more so my office does
- 30:08not require us to come back. And so our expresses are
- 30:12typically done under second trip, which is a whole nother
- 30:17Side Story that I could go into. And we we went over it in
- 30:20another thing. If management also sorry also to
- 30:25perface this, if management is requiring you to go back, you
- 30:30also need to be doing that load time for you loading a parcel
- 30:34into the vehicle or however many express you're delivery.
- 30:38Because the deviation based off of the stuff that I just read
- 30:42out of the comprehensive guide is for that part of you
- 30:47deviating out of your line of travel.
- 30:49Hello. Hello, we can hear you good.
- 30:51OK, yeah, I was trying to reply but apparently that microphone
- 30:56didn't like long period of time. Yeah.
- 31:00Want me to Yeah, I would say if if you and I missed what you
- 31:04said, so if I'm repeating what you said, I apologize.
- 31:07If you leave your line of travel for whatever reason, enforce
- 31:14whether it be to go back to the office and pick it up or to
- 31:17deliver, make sure it gets delivered by that 6:00 PM cut
- 31:20off, you would delete or the deviate deviation start and end.
- 31:27And the reason that it doesn't lock you out like start and end
- 31:31load for that is because in theory you're going to deliver
- 31:35an express. So you need to be able to get to
- 31:41the option whether it's delivery attempted.
- 31:45The only thing I would add to what you were saying was is, is
- 31:49and I don't know if it just cut out because I couldn't really
- 31:51hear you all the way is that if you're leaving your line of
- 31:56travel for an express specifically, it can't be for
- 32:02whatever reason. But if management is requiring
- 32:05you to deliver it for a by by 6:00 PM to come back to the
- 32:10office for what it it's, it is only like Kristen had said
- 32:15earlier, it is specifically only to express.
- 32:20The other part that I did also want to add because this was
- 32:25brought to my attention and I was like when I was a regular
- 32:29and I and this is a Section 342 of the PO6O3 which is the real
- 32:38carrier duties and responsibilities and it is
- 32:41specifically about express mail and it says dismount delivery.
- 32:47All express mail must be delivered to the residents or
- 32:51business. Try to get the customer to come
- 32:54to the vehicle by sounding the horn or by giving some other
- 32:59signal. If there is no response or if
- 33:02the customer requests you to do so, dismount to to deliver any
- 33:08residence or business that is on the line of travel or within 1/2
- 33:12mile of the route and has a password leading to it in order
- 33:15to meet requirements. Delivery times Management may
- 33:17require a carrier during the course of normal delivery of the
- 33:20route to deviate from the established line of travel to
- 33:23deliver express mail and will provide additional compensation
- 33:27as appropriate, IE express deviation, RX hands or second
- 33:32trip later on if you're doing it at the end of the day.
- 33:35However, a carrier who traverses both sides of the road is is
- 33:40expected to deliver express mail to a residence or business on
- 33:44the opposite side of the roadway in order to meet an established
- 33:47delivery time when it is anticipated that the carrier
- 33:50will not transverse the opposite side of the road until the
- 33:53required delivery time for the express mail piece.
- 33:56In those circumstances where divided highways, limited access
- 34:00roads, hazardous conditions or other unusual situations exist
- 34:04that may encumber delivery to the opposite side of the
- 34:06roadway, management may require the carrier to deviate and the
- 34:09carrier will receive additional compensation as appropriate.
- 34:12So let's say you're delivering to one side of the highway, your
- 34:15express is for the other. Again, this might be another
- 34:18event and you're not going to be on that other side of the
- 34:20highway until after 6:00 PM. That be an event that you're
- 34:25using the express deviation and regular roll carriers covered
- 34:30under the FLSA or leave replacements when compensated on
- 34:34the evaluation of a regular auxiliary route served and when
- 34:38actual hours do not exceed 40. Oh, never mind.
- 34:41Sorry. I don't know why it cut off
- 34:43there, but that's not relevant. So I think I covered it mostly
- 34:47for the Express. Does that make sense?
- 34:49Do you have anything else to add for that, Josh?
- 34:51Yes. Fun fact, Express mail is the
- 34:55only type mail that gets attempted for no no male
- 35:01receptacle. Yes, and it has to go to the
- 35:03front door based on what I just read.
- 35:05Yes. OK, so the second thing we're
- 35:08going to. I was just going to say that I
- 35:10think that pretty much covers that in its entirety.
- 35:13So on to number next. Number next, so loading a
- 35:18vehicle. So the second thing that the
- 35:21engineers also made as an actual timed event which was the same
- 35:28as it was in the in the past mail system was the start and
- 35:33the end load vehicle. Now hold on, sorry one more
- 35:37second. I was trying to pull it up
- 35:40before I got there. And.
- 35:43Then I just forgot what I was looking up.
- 35:45Oh my God I'm so sorry. Yes, but I also wanted to
- 35:52include that there. It's in the comprehensive guide
- 35:58and I thought I had it up the drive speed.
- 36:01Nope, Nope. So there's certain events like
- 36:05the express deviation, sorry, that out of these three events
- 36:09that I'm going through express deviation and loading the
- 36:13vehicle also has a personal fatigue and delay percentage
- 36:18that is added to them. And that percentage is that's
- 36:24what I was looking at is like 1.3%.
- 36:28I can't remember exactly. So you'll, you'll see it on
- 36:32your, on your 4241 M when you get your evaluations
- 36:37specifically on load vehicle and express deviation, it'll say
- 36:41actual time plus personal fatigue and delay because you're
- 36:45not going to load the vehicle the same each day.
- 36:49There might, like I, I was, I've said before in another episode,
- 36:53you maybe went to a concert the night before and you're real
- 36:56tired. Or you might have a, a sub who
- 37:00you know is a little bit slower and, or they this day they were
- 37:05quicker. So it, it just depends on
- 37:08there's a lot of other factors that play into it.
- 37:10So just keep that in mind with your load time in that
- 37:15fluctuation. Also, just been doing any task
- 37:19after a period of time you're going to slow down even if it's
- 37:22just slightly. Yeah, it just depends on the day
- 37:25that you're like on the day that you come back from being on
- 37:31leave or the day that you came back from from being off.
- 37:35You might load faster than you do when you've worked 10 days in
- 37:40a row. You know, it's just, it's kind
- 37:43of, it varies from person to person.
- 37:46I mean the size and the weight of your packages too.
- 37:50I mean, if you're loading up the small stuff 1st and you're
- 37:53quicker at it, by the time you get to the heavier stuff it's a
- 37:56little bit more draining, yes. Right.
- 37:59Or even vice versa. You load the heavy stuff in the
- 38:02truck first just to get it in there and out of the way and
- 38:06place it. You've drained yourself even for
- 38:08the smaller ones, which you can move quicker with those, but you
- 38:13might not be moving as quick if it as if you did not have the
- 38:16big ones. Yeah, so the RX scan for start
- 38:21load vehicle. The RX activity guide states
- 38:26select start load vehicle and moving loaded conveyance from
- 38:29work area to begin loading vehicle for delivery Carrier may
- 38:32have multiple start load vehicle selections in a day of
- 38:36additional trips are additional trips to load are required.
- 38:40Ensure this keystroke is followed by end load.
- 38:42Once loading is complete, there is no change to previously
- 38:46established loading procedures and then End Load Vehicle.
- 38:50Select End Load Vehicle when returning MD conveyance to
- 38:53designated location After vehicle loading is complete.
- 38:57Carrier may have multiple end load vehicle selections in a day
- 39:00if additional trips to load are required now.
- 39:04M38, which is management's managing management of rural
- 39:11delivery services, says loading the mail must be loaded in the
- 39:16vehicle in order of delivery. It's essential that the carrier
- 39:20maintain the delivery sequence of mail in the vehicle.
- 39:23This permits ready identification and retrieval of
- 39:27the mail to be delivered and contributes to an efficient
- 39:30delivery operation. Safety is an important factor
- 39:34and the task of replenishing mail or obtaining the next
- 39:37parcel for delivery is only done when the vehicle is stopped.
- 39:40So each person loads their vehicle differently.
- 39:43And I, I mean, management really doesn't have, that's, that's
- 39:48what it says for loading. Now, just be safe while you're
- 39:53doing it. And I'm not saying like be
- 39:55meticulous in how you're loading your vehicle, but each person's
- 39:58going to load their vehicle a little bit differently.
- 40:01So keep that in mind while you're while you're loading.
- 40:06And then the other part, sorry, loading of vehicles, thought I
- 40:11had it up PO6O3 section 262 states load all mail in the
- 40:17vehicle so that it is in sequence of delivery to ensure
- 40:20that no time is lost on the route searching for the proper
- 40:23bundles and parcels or containers.
- 40:27And then if and I, I will also say it should be an if final
- 40:32withdrawal, make final withdrawal of preferential mail
- 40:36from the designated distribution case immediately prior to
- 40:39leaving the office. Place this mail in sequence of
- 40:42delivery and deliver with the other mail.
- 40:46I know my office had an issue where they weren't going to
- 40:48measure us an additional time around the hot case because they
- 40:54said that that final withdrawal would be on load time while
- 40:57you're loading. And then the other part of this
- 41:02is if the clerks are placing like large parcels or let's say
- 41:10you have a full coverage and they're placing a bunch of items
- 41:16for you to like load into a conveyance to deliver to take to
- 41:20the vehicle, you also can be on load time for that.
- 41:25And then the other part of this is I'll let you say what you're
- 41:33going to say, Josh, I'm sorry. I'm going to say yeah, if if the
- 41:36clerks sort parcels to your case on the floor, you can when you
- 41:43move them to put them in a conveyance to take them out to
- 41:45load, you can include that in your load time.
- 41:48Yes. And it always be from you
- 41:51leaving your case to push that conveyance or wherever you're
- 41:56sorting your parcels that I should say as some people move
- 41:59to other areas. But the way that it's
- 42:02generalized is the moment you just start pushing it until you
- 42:06have taken that hamper back to its designated location or
- 42:11conveyance. The other part of this that gets
- 42:14a little bit more complicated. And I, I know that we are rule
- 42:18carriers and we aren't all required to do this.
- 42:22There is what is called the load truck feature on the scanner.
- 42:27And over the last couple years I've seen more rule carriers are
- 42:33using it. And I'm going to read the Step 4
- 42:36grievance settlement from 2019 and it hasn't been altered yet.
- 42:42And then I'm going to talk about my my understanding of this
- 42:45after the issue in this grievance concerns rule carriers
- 42:49utilizing the load truck feature when loading an employer
- 42:53provided vehicle. After the this reviewing this
- 42:56matter, we mutually agree that no national interpretive issue
- 42:59is fairly presented in this case.
- 43:02PO6O3 Section 223.23 is instructive regarding how rule
- 43:07carriers handle parcels that do not fit in the case separation.
- 43:10Specifically, a letter may be reversed or some other method
- 43:14may be used to alert carriers as a parcel, yada yada yada.
- 43:17The parties agree that management may require rule
- 43:20carrier rule craft employees who are being compensated hourly to
- 43:24use the load truck feature. This settlement should be
- 43:28applied to grievances that are currently being held provided
- 43:31pending the outcome of this dispute yada yada yada.
- 43:35So this was like in our old mail count system.
- 43:40My understanding of this now is that if management is requiring
- 43:45you to use the load truck feature that is on the scanner,
- 43:50you can be using it under load time.
- 43:54Now the other part of this is that regardless if you're in
- 43:59office, that management has not required you to do this.
- 44:03You're sorting your parcels like you've always done it before.
- 44:06RX does give you credit for you handling the parcel in the
- 44:11office and we have talked about that in that 4241 M episode.
- 44:16It's based off of where you're delivering it.
- 44:18You're getting credit to sort small or medium sized parcel and
- 44:22if it's in a mailbox or in a parcel locker and then you're
- 44:26getting credit to sort a large parcel if it was delivered to
- 44:28front door on the scanner in. If you are loading your vehicle,
- 44:36you can switch over. The only option that you're
- 44:41actually have the ability to do during load loading your vehicle
- 44:46is the load truck option. So I don't know if that's going
- 44:50to become a requirement for us here on out.
- 44:54That's out of my wheelhouse and I'm not the person who
- 44:58determines that. I know it's, there's some
- 45:02benefit to it, especially to the Subs that do not know their, the
- 45:08routes that they're doing, because it gives you the
- 45:10sequence number based off of your, the AMS edit book number.
- 45:15And then it also gives you the section of the route that it's
- 45:18in. And then if management is ever
- 45:22questioning you of whether you're not or not you had a
- 45:25parcel, now you have that as a resource to go, hey, I never
- 45:29loaded this in my vehicle even though it's on my package to
- 45:33look ahead. And I'm trying to think of is
- 45:35there anything else with that part of that?
- 45:37No. I can't.
- 45:39I'm I'm one of those meticulous truckloaders, so.
- 45:45Yeah, to eat their own, I mean. It is, it is.
- 45:49And I, I just see some of these carriers that just load packages
- 45:53Willy nilly and I'm just like ow, but I also don't mark
- 45:57packages, I don't write on them. I, you know, I load meticulously
- 46:02basically. And I, I see some, even some
- 46:06regular carriers that write the house number on the parcel
- 46:10marker. They, they, they mark it, write
- 46:13the house number or on, on the, on the package.
- 46:17And it's just tossed Willy nilly in the truck.
- 46:20And I'm thinking, how do you work efficiently doing that?
- 46:23But that's just I'm. Yeah.
- 46:25I, I I. I'm not an OCD person but when
- 46:28it comes to my mail and delivering I'm OCD or.
- 46:32My curbside, I have them lined up in order and I, you know, I
- 46:37do mark them because what we've talked about before, I miss them
- 46:41when I mark them. You know, what makes you think
- 46:43I'll get it right if I don't mark them exactly?
- 46:46But for all my, I separate my, all my different CBU stops,
- 46:52which is the bulk of my round. I just kind of throw them in
- 46:55there in different sections of the truck because I actually
- 46:58sort them when I get to that location for delivery, if that
- 47:03makes sense. Yeah, I think it does.
- 47:06And and maybe I should have used, I should have used
- 47:08probably a different set of words.
- 47:10But like there's I've seen people where it wasn't, I
- 47:14wouldn't say I would call it meticulous, but they were
- 47:16organizing it to be what what I actually think is going to be
- 47:20most efficient for them on the street.
- 47:22But I've also seen it where somebody like overthought it
- 47:25like that was like a newer sub and they didn't realize that it
- 47:30was like harming them essentially.
- 47:32So you just have to load however works for you, that's going to
- 47:36be the safest and most efficient for you.
- 47:39But and if management really feels like micromanaging it,
- 47:43like, I mean, you know, the manager I was talking about
- 47:46earlier today, she she's never delivered mail and never had to
- 47:51deal with an SPM. So, you know, some of these
- 47:54managers ever had to deal with that either.
- 47:56So kind of keep that in mind. So the other thing with the load
- 48:01truck is that it does mark those parcels as out for delivery.
- 48:05So if the if it's it's like a customer service kind of a
- 48:11thing. And I don't know if management,
- 48:14the higher ups are going to make us do it from here on out with
- 48:17that and using that. I, I know personally, like I
- 48:23don't flag anything, but I do mark like right on some of my
- 48:26parcels for like the for my key box stops.
- 48:30And there was this one guy I used to work with that would he
- 48:34would literate like his he had worked, he started in the 80s
- 48:40and he would just look at and he was on APOV route and he would
- 48:42just look at a parcel and just like his arm, like he had like
- 48:46visual memory of it. And he would just like look on
- 48:49it and then like put it in the vehicle and he had them all in
- 48:52these spots. And it was just like it looked
- 48:55like no rhyme or reason to me. And I still like to this day
- 49:00don't know how he did it, but it just blew my mind just watching
- 49:05him load. Just go look at it and go boom,
- 49:08boom. Like just place them where they
- 49:10go. What?
- 49:12I do in my LLV, but yeah, I I get it as a being APOV driver.
- 49:16That was the one thing is I marked everything in APOV, but,
- 49:20but I was meticulous on how I loaded that too, as much as
- 49:23possible. Yeah, I, I, I get it.
- 49:25I, I worked with an old regular that would, he would circle the
- 49:29address instead of marking it and then he would know what he
- 49:33had and he wouldn't mark everything.
- 49:34I remember having to go take over the route 'cause he got
- 49:37sick out on the route or something one day and nothing is
- 49:40marked. And I was just like, OK, let's
- 49:43do this. Yeah.
- 49:45And also if, if I and if I'm mistaken in this in, in my
- 49:51understanding of the load truck, because I know different offices
- 49:54kind of have been doing different things, but my
- 49:56understanding of it is that it's been altered now that they're
- 49:59going to let you use the load the load truck feature on load
- 50:04time in regulars and RCA's. But unless that's changed, yeah,
- 50:08the the parties agree that management may require real
- 50:12craft employees who are being compensated hourly to use the
- 50:15low truck feature. But the RCA are always using
- 50:18aren't always hourly. It may be over 40.
- 50:23So if that's if I get other information on that I, I will
- 50:28correct myself on that too. But.
- 50:29I only say or regulars in their first year that choose hourly
- 50:34they can require them. New RC as in within their first
- 50:39five pay periods? Oh yeah, they would be.
- 50:41Initially what it was about was the newer RC as in their first
- 50:48five pay periods. Yeah, all of why they were
- 50:51making them and, and I I think that it's I've, I've noticed
- 50:56that there's some Subs that it they crutch on it pretty heavily
- 51:04and there's others that have used it as a tool, but they
- 51:08still like know the route. And there's going to be some
- 51:11parcels that, you know, I know we're kind of going off on the
- 51:15load load truck feature, but there's going to be some parcels
- 51:19that don't scheme correctly. And other side little note on
- 51:25this too, because I've seen this happen before and it has not
- 51:30really ever been talked about very often, but I've witnesses
- 51:34happen if a route is scheduled to be adjusted and there is a
- 51:40firm date of when that's going to happen.
- 51:43Typically the pay period before the adjustment happens, the edit
- 51:47book sequence numbers have already started change and so
- 51:52the load truck feature will not work 100% correctly, especially
- 51:57if they've just completely like gutted and changed a route.
- 52:00So load truck and package look ahead will not work that pay
- 52:05period prior to the adjustment going into effect.
- 52:08So. Also.
- 52:10Keep that in mind. Load truck will not scan
- 52:13packages in if the clerks have not scanned the dispatch up scan
- 52:19after sorting. So if they're loading by clerks
- 52:23are still sorting packages as this happens in our office daily
- 52:28and they're trying to use load truck, it will not always it
- 52:31more. 9 times out of 10 does not register that package until
- 52:35after clerks have scanned the dispatch scan.
- 52:38And fun fact I found out the hard way, if you hit load truck
- 52:43after the delivery scan, it will cancel the delivery scan.
- 52:47Oh yeah, yeah. Because I scanned them delivered
- 52:50at the apartment when I got there and, you know, sorted them
- 52:53to where they're going to go, like at the on the ground
- 52:56underneath this CBU that it's supposed to be at.
- 52:59And there was one that I relooked at it and couldn't tell
- 53:02because it's dim lighting in in the one section.
- 53:05I couldn't tell. So I scanned it load truck to
- 53:08see to verify the apartment number.
- 53:10And I had to talking to you the next day about that.
- 53:15You can also, if you're under the scan barcode screen, the
- 53:20little magnifying lens down on the left hand corner at the
- 53:23bottom. If you hit that, it will pop up
- 53:26to do an address verification to scan in.
- 53:29Oh, I did not know that. Yeah, it'll turn, screen will
- 53:32turn yellow and it'll ask for address verification and then
- 53:35you can scan it that way to look.
- 53:37Up. I've seen the yellow screen
- 53:39before. Address look up.
- 53:41Didn't know how I got to it, but I've seen that yellow screen
- 53:44before. OK.
- 53:45Somebody asked does it work for letters too?
- 53:48I don't know. I've never tried it on letters,
- 53:51but I've done it on packages usually, like if an Amazon
- 53:55label's been ripped off and it only works once the dispatch
- 53:59scan has been done after, after the clerks, after sorting and
- 54:03everything's done and they do their upload scan.
- 54:06That's the only time it will work.
- 54:08Yeah, I probably, I don't think it would work on letters because
- 54:12it's just showing what the parcels scans are I think in the
- 54:16system, but I don't know. I'll test that out.
- 54:19Also the other thing too that I've noticed now, because I know
- 54:23the scanners just recently updated and now you'll have the
- 54:27package look ahead with the scan menu and you can toggle between
- 54:31the two of them, which I think is amazing because like I
- 54:35sometimes forget parcels I have in the way, way back because I
- 54:38have a Metris and I don't want to go pull over, turn the
- 54:41vehicle off, go, you know, go look in the back.
- 54:45I sometimes will look on my scanner and go oh OK I do have a
- 54:49parcel for them. And you scan scan from that
- 54:52package look ahead screen too. That's what I Yep, that's what I
- 54:55was just about to say. Yeah.
- 54:57Which was like, whoa, I don't, I could just leave that menu up
- 55:00and then scan from there. Which is that's actually.
- 55:02Or you'd have to toggle back over to it.
- 55:04Yeah, once you scanned it, but yeah, so but if you have, if
- 55:11you're in office, I will say this also at the end of this,
- 55:15there is no sorry to say this for all of these events, there
- 55:20is no set time based off of what I read those engineers, there is
- 55:26no set time for these events because there's so many like I
- 55:30said, there's so many variables that that's why there is no set
- 55:35standard here. Like it's going to take what
- 55:38it'll take and management can't be benchmarking your time for
- 55:45what these things are going to be.
- 55:48And I know the express deviation, they're not really as
- 55:53harping on. It's, it's this next one that's
- 55:56going to be the it's a load time.
- 55:58And then this next one, I'm going to go over here in a
- 56:00second, which is the end of shift time there.
- 56:03Like I said, there's there's no set time.
- 56:06So end of shift duties, which a lot of people in the beginning
- 56:12of RX didn't realize we had is the moment that you hit RX scan
- 56:20J, which is returned to DU, it says select return it to you
- 56:25after returning the office, stopping the vehicle by turning
- 56:28off the key. After all route delivery is
- 56:30complete. This begins timing of end of
- 56:32shift duties and until you either hit L, which is RX scan
- 56:38L, which is clock out or if you hit PM casing that timer for
- 56:44that end of shift time is going and it's important.
- 56:50And I'm going to preface this again, even if you're sub, make
- 56:54sure you've turned off that vehicle, you've parked it.
- 56:57If you need to go to the dock to start unloading things and
- 57:01you've turned off the vehicle, the next thing you should be
- 57:03doing is grabbing that scanner and hitting return to DU The
- 57:08other day. I, I think I was talking to, I
- 57:13was talking to Josh the other day and I said, do you when I
- 57:17leave my house, I'm so like, I have this so ingrained in me now
- 57:20is that like when I leave my house sometimes to go to work, I
- 57:23want to hit depart to route or when I leave work, depart to
- 57:28route, you know? Yes Sir, what she's smoking and
- 57:32why she wasn't sharing. Depart to route.
- 57:40Yeah. And I wish there was a scan for
- 57:42the mapping, but so the union came up with and this is also
- 57:51like some of this information is in the PO per the PO6O3.
- 57:55But like loading time, the time required friend of shift duty is
- 58:01recorded daily on the MDD and the average weekly time over 52
- 58:06weeks is included in the evaluation.
- 58:08The time begins when the carrier enters returned to you on the
- 58:13MVD and ends when they hit PM casing or clock out.
- 58:18Either event signals the end time of the four end of shift
- 58:23signed of shift activities recorded as actual time are And
- 58:27then I'm going to also prophase this by saying not all will be
- 58:30applicable at every office. 1 is gather accepted and collected
- 58:37mail. Empty mail trays, turn in the
- 58:40scanner personal items and exit the vehicle.
- 58:45Grabbing all that stuff and then taking it into the office.
- 58:49Obtaining A conveyance hamper using the restroom.
- 58:53Disposal of ordinary mail collected and accepted on route.
- 58:57Dispose like if you have to fix stamps on unstamped mail when
- 59:01the customer has left sufficient postage.
- 59:03Face and deposit mail and designated location case or
- 59:07dispose of undeliverable ordinary mail and there's a
- 59:10reference to the PO6O3 section 4.21 dispose of carrier pickup
- 59:16items collected on the route and that also includes if you need
- 59:21to hit that prepaid acceptance. If the if management is
- 59:25requiring you to do that prepaid acceptance scan for the parcels
- 59:29over the five placing undeliverable parcels in a
- 59:33designated location, Dispose of special service mail collected,
- 59:38accepted on route, registered mail, certified mail, insured
- 59:41mail, Cods, express money orders.
- 59:46You know all that stuff. Clear and dispose of accountable
- 59:51items. You're registered your certified
- 59:53express mail, Cods, postage, dues, customs duties, mail and
- 59:58wait while items are cleared and completed paperwork at your like
- 1:00:02accountable cage or if management clears you.
- 1:00:05Return keys and the gas cards, their credit cards.
- 1:00:09Dispose of signed forms for numbered insured mail.
- 1:00:14Dispose of undeliverable and ordinary and insured parcels.
- 1:00:18Place returned empty mail traced in designated storage locations.
- 1:00:23Move vehicle from own loading location to regular parking
- 1:00:27location where applicable. So if you're unloading at the
- 1:00:30dock because you're where you park to be closed so far away or
- 1:00:35you have bought loads of parcels that you picked up on your route
- 1:00:39and you need to unload them at the dock rule reach.
- 1:00:43So replenish the lead cards and the brochures that you need.
- 1:00:48Stamp stock. Replenish stamp stock and turn
- 1:00:50in cash from previous sales. Participate in audit of stamp
- 1:00:54stock sales trip report. Complete afternoon entries on
- 1:00:58Form 4240. Report vehicle problems and
- 1:01:02write up your vehicle. Like let's say you were
- 1:01:04delivering and all of a sudden your turn signal light went out
- 1:01:07and you need to write it up. Or like what happens to me all
- 1:01:10the time because I'm parked under a tree that has a lot of
- 1:01:14SAP. I go through windshield wiper
- 1:01:16fluid a lot. Windshield wiper fluid.
- 1:01:20Yeah. And if I didn't, I'd write up
- 1:01:23and if I didn't, I'd write a 1767 because it freezes here.
- 1:01:27It is 15° outside right now so to hell I'd better have someone
- 1:01:33show I perform so report vehicle problems.
- 1:01:39Perform required updates in AMS edit book.
- 1:01:43So when you're working on your edit books, this is when you
- 1:01:47should be doing it so that your route is receiving credit, your
- 1:01:51DPM and LTM updates. Now management can do this in
- 1:01:57the morning and pay you 8127 time, but the preferred method
- 1:02:02for this to be built into your route is on end of shift time,
- 1:02:07perform Saturday clearance activities.
- 1:02:10So like let's say you know, some offices, they clean the floors
- 1:02:16on the weekends. I know my office, they have a
- 1:02:18company during like holiday weekends will come in and we'll
- 1:02:24add wax, buffer the floors because our floors have asbestos
- 1:02:27in them. And so if we have to move all of
- 1:02:30our mats and all that kind of stuff, maintain case
- 1:02:34configuration, replace labels as needed.
- 1:02:37So if you're doing labels on your route and it's not because
- 1:02:40your line of travel changed or, and I, I, it's not based off of
- 1:02:48like let's say that you had a route adjustment.
- 1:02:51That's going to be a whole nother topic.
- 1:02:53This is like if your labels are old, you need to change a row
- 1:03:00out, you know, try to at least change a row every every month,
- 1:03:04you know, do do some maintenance on them.
- 1:03:07Labels waive rate and a fixed postage to parcels received on
- 1:03:13route. Emptying out and returning mail
- 1:03:15from full boxes held that case where the customer never came to
- 1:03:19retrieve. So let's say you got somebody on
- 1:03:2210 day hold and it's been the 10 days and they haven't return
- 1:03:26that mail, put a bar in there and and get that, get that
- 1:03:32rolling, returning three M mail, the three M mail, forward mail,
- 1:03:38etcetera to its designated location.
- 1:03:40Retrieve hold mail for the next delivery day.
- 1:03:43If kept away from your case and prepare for delivery.
- 1:03:46I actually will retrieve retrieve my hold mail for the
- 1:03:49next delivery day and get it set up for the next day so that I
- 1:03:53just throw it in with my small parcels later on and my spurt
- 1:03:58like spur trays and stuff. If you need to have discussions
- 1:04:03with management, like let's say you needed to file a grievance
- 1:04:07or manage like something's wrong with your pay and management
- 1:04:11still hasn't corrected it, that can be on return to EU time
- 1:04:15replenish supplies. So like you're 3840 nines, 4050
- 1:04:19sixes, 4560. What are 4560 fives?
- 1:04:22That is a good question and I don't know.
- 1:04:26Let's see and 4232. 65 yeah vehicle.
- 1:04:31Right anyways. That that that's your fix it
- 1:04:33slip for the truck. Oh.
- 1:04:34OK, OK OK I know I was like Oh my gosh I think but complete PS
- 1:04:42Form 3575 which is change of address if required.
- 1:04:46Complete PS Form 3971 leave requests if you want to do your
- 1:04:50leave requests on return to DU time, handling money order
- 1:04:53transactions, which I've never done, and then returning a
- 1:04:57conveyance to its designated location.
- 1:05:00So these are just, that's like a 31 item list of things that can
- 1:05:06be happening on return to DU. And I'm sure there's other
- 1:05:10things, you know. So I've what was one of the
- 1:05:13things I did, I haven't done this in a long time because I've
- 1:05:16not had enough time to do it. I've like dusted the inside of
- 1:05:21the my mattress on the on the dashboard one time just 'cause
- 1:05:27it was disgusting. I'll put, I'll put my hold if I
- 1:05:32have future pars, labels and hold cards that are up there for
- 1:05:37future dates. I'll put those up if they're
- 1:05:39going up for the next day as well as our holds are are kept
- 1:05:45at our cases. We have racks for those.
- 1:05:47But yeah, I'll pull my holds. I'll try if I can remember.
- 1:05:51Yeah. Anything that you know you're
- 1:05:53preparing for the next day would be included under that too, so.
- 1:05:57Yeah, some of the things that won't be included in this is if
- 1:06:01your case, like if you're casing mail that you brought back from
- 1:06:06the route, like management has allowed you to not have to like
- 1:06:11leave it uncased. It depends on the office, but it
- 1:06:14was a black box or some of the DPS that you had was miss
- 1:06:18sequenced and they you know, it's it's you're handling that
- 1:06:22day's stuff. But if you're essentially PM
- 1:06:26casing or casing like a a full coverage for the next day, that
- 1:06:30would be under PM casing that would not be on.
- 1:06:33Or like when I come back Tuesday evening, Tuesday after the row
- 1:06:37and newspapers for Wednesdays are sitting there, I wanted to
- 1:06:40case them up for Wednesday. That would go under PM casing
- 1:06:43usually, yeah. And I'm also kind of blind, so I
- 1:06:48when I write my I actually, cuz you know how like they'll have
- 1:06:51the hold papers they give us or even the yellow cards and they
- 1:06:55have like the tiny font that's on the bottom.
- 1:06:57I write it bigger in Sharpie so that I can see it.
- 1:07:02And then I'll even write like the day of the week that it says
- 1:07:04that it ends plus the date or if it's a pick up, I just write PU
- 1:07:08real big so that I just so that it's it's just organized and
- 1:07:13that you it's just easier to see it.
- 1:07:17I already know I'm going to have like three holes that the guy
- 1:07:20who delivered my route Friday did not probably deliver, but
- 1:07:24that's tomorrow's problem. The the other thing with it is,
- 1:07:33I know like Josh the other day was talking about the red line
- 1:07:36policy and there's SNDCS and I think some offices have started
- 1:07:41doing this. There's going to be I don't
- 1:07:44think there's still provisions of what is contractually
- 1:07:49appropriate and management can't be again benchmarking and
- 1:07:54limiting the end of shift time to 5 minutes because the
- 1:07:59engineers determined is that there is no set standard.
- 1:08:04So granted, they may have, you know, maybe they put the three M
- 1:08:10case and like an area for the album and the area for the holds
- 1:08:16in a different location so that it's not them going all the way
- 1:08:20back to their case per SE. But they still have to allow
- 1:08:25them to do their case labels and the route maintenance that has
- 1:08:29to happen because there is no other way for us to get the
- 1:08:33credit for it. And granted, you're not going to
- 1:08:37be doing your edit book every single day unless your growth
- 1:08:40route, which would be kind of crazy, but I'm a growth route
- 1:08:43and I'm not doing my edit book every day.
- 1:08:45But you still have to be able to get paid and compensated for
- 1:08:48doing these sorts of things. And that's why a lot of this is
- 1:08:52just blanketed under the return to DU time.
- 1:08:55So don't let management bully you into thinking you can only
- 1:08:58have 5 minutes of return to DU time.
- 1:09:01And if if they are, yeah, well and even.
- 1:09:05Like get the nerve. To leave the truck now the other
- 1:09:11thing that I talked about was that personal fatigue and delay
- 1:09:16and this is in the comprehensive guide the return to DU time is
- 1:09:20going to be what it is. It does not have that personal
- 1:09:23fatigue and delay buffer added to it because the engineers know
- 1:09:29that you're fatigued from the route already.
- 1:09:32So the time it it, it's kind of already treated like a break
- 1:09:37because sometimes people, you know, are just going to the bath
- 1:09:41like you, some people like you park the vehicle, turn it off,
- 1:09:44hit return to DU and run to go to the bathroom.
- 1:09:48Like like, I want to know what the return to DU time is for
- 1:09:51that route that's like 180 miles.
- 1:09:55Like did you pee out there on the route?
- 1:09:57Like like where did you have bathroom stops?
- 1:10:03That would be me on a Saturday or anytime that my Township
- 1:10:08office is closed because it's about halfway and there are days
- 1:10:13where they love me when I bring their mail in because I'm using
- 1:10:16the restroom. Like, guys, I got to go potty,
- 1:10:21yeah. Pretty much.
- 1:10:22I'm here, be back in a minute. Well, and sometimes like I get
- 1:10:26back to the office and a lot of the city carriers get back
- 1:10:30around between like 4:00 and 4:30, I've noticed.
- 1:10:33And if I get back, when the city carriers get back, it's going to
- 1:10:36take me longer because they're all like all their vehicles are
- 1:10:41in the way and like I'm having to run around them.
- 1:10:45It's, it's just different, you know, and I know as rule
- 1:10:48carriers, we try to be as efficient as possible because
- 1:10:51we're on an evaluated system, but just, I don't know, I had to
- 1:10:55start doing this like mentality with saving some things to, for
- 1:11:02return to DU time just so that I knew that I was getting proper
- 1:11:05credit for it. And granted, there's certain
- 1:11:07items like, you know, that we have measurements, we, we do
- 1:11:10have credit for, you know, the three M mail were measured over
- 1:11:14there. But I mean, the management's,
- 1:11:19the one that says DPS is designed so that it's supposed
- 1:11:21to go to the streets. So obviously that DPS better be
- 1:11:25pristine, but it's not. I'm going to have.
- 1:11:28Mistakes we started on Monday. There was a reason I had a 12
- 1:11:32hour day and 11 inches of DPS I brought back that was miss
- 1:11:39sequenced. So last night I had AI had a
- 1:11:43nightmare that I got to this to like the beginning of this one
- 1:11:48neighborhood that I have really bad.
- 1:11:49My DPS turned to a tray of raw and I was like, Oh my God, this
- 1:11:52is a nightmare. Why am I I can stream about
- 1:11:55messed up DPS society post office dreams.
- 1:12:02So yeah, can't wait for the for the manager to be like you need
- 1:12:06to handle you need to be out in 5 minutes.
- 1:12:08Cool. Then what are you going to do
- 1:12:09with all this? You're going to pay me 127 time
- 1:12:12tomorrow to handle all this play route cleanup?
- 1:12:17Yeah, there there is no benchmarking and if management's
- 1:12:20trying to benchmark. Well, you need to contact your
- 1:12:24appropriate as Yeah. And we've, I've I've seen an
- 1:12:27influx of. I guess it comes in waves
- 1:12:31there's and right before we started this episode too, we had
- 1:12:34somebody who posted and said management is trying to limit us
- 1:12:39to only 5 minutes of return to DU time and falsify if they're
- 1:12:44changing your 40 to 40 after you leave for.
- 1:12:47The Today to reflect that 5 minutes that is falsifying a
- 1:12:51time record and yeah, you definitely do contact somebody
- 1:12:55about that. Yeah.
- 1:12:56Oh my gosh, I would. Yeah.
- 1:12:59And. Even and the other thing, yeah,
- 1:13:00I'd be all they'd be running scared from me if I caught them
- 1:13:05doing. That yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:09Well, and and I've. I've I've actually caught it.
- 1:13:12On my own route. Where the sub hit clock out and
- 1:13:15returned it to you in the same minute and I'm like it takes a
- 1:13:17minute for you to just more than a minute for you to walk from
- 1:13:21where my parking. Spot is.
- 1:13:23To my case, so I disputed that time.
- 1:13:29So it it was and and won that dispute and has made have I have
- 1:13:36made management very aware. Like, hey, you know, if you're a
- 1:13:41you know, there's going to be sometimes where, yeah, you are
- 1:13:43kind of throw and go or there's no the DPS is pristine.
- 1:13:49So you don't have a bunch of three M mail or you don't have
- 1:13:52people on hold. But sometimes that soup that you
- 1:13:56bring back, it's going to take a little bit for you to clean up.
- 1:14:00So it takes what it takes and don't let management benchmark
- 1:14:04you. All right.
- 1:14:06So trying to think, oh I did get my mini e-mail survey dispute
- 1:14:11back. The other day, yeah, nice.
- 1:14:14My two boxes that I disputed were added.
- 1:14:17On for a whopping. 1.7 minutes. Anything to help those standard?
- 1:14:23Hours since I was only three minutes.
- 1:14:24Over. Yeah, Every little bit helps.
- 1:14:27Seriously, Josh, have they been? Have they been telling, have
- 1:14:31they been like limiting your guys's return to you time with
- 1:14:34that red line policy? No.
- 1:14:36OK, good. I'm walking on wood right now.
- 1:14:39Don't limit it. At least they haven't said
- 1:14:42anything about limiting it. We're going taking.
- 1:14:45But I did find out that you know where Monday was a 11 and 311
- 1:14:51and three quarter hour day. Yeah.
- 1:14:53But it might actually be 12 hours and 15 minutes because the
- 1:14:58one supervisor request asked me yesterday about Monday's hours.
- 1:15:03She's like, was that you or was that the sub?
- 1:15:06You know the sub, you know, clock out at 8:45.
- 1:15:09I'm like, I'm like, what was the date?
- 1:15:11What day? It's like Monday.
- 1:15:12I'm like, that was me, OK, Because it has your name on it.
- 1:15:16But I'm like, she's like, there's no way you got back that
- 1:15:20like, like, well, first of all, it was a Monday and we had the
- 1:15:22marriage now that they made us take this take with us.
- 1:15:25Yeah. Oh, OK.
- 1:15:27It's like, so you know, I'm using what what was, you know,
- 1:15:31entering the scanner. I didn't adjust nothing, which
- 1:15:34means she's not putting in my 30 minute lunch every day, which is
- 1:15:37down. I I write it down.
- 1:15:39That means I have 15 minutes overtime.
- 1:15:42I was going to say, So you went FLSA overtime?
- 1:15:45Are you doing your clock in and out to lunch on the scanner I
- 1:15:49keep? Forgetting and I know it's two
- 1:15:52more scans. In the day, but yeah, because if
- 1:15:56you do that it automatically puts it into the time.
- 1:15:58System. Yeah, right, I know.
- 1:16:00I just keep forgetting to add, you know, to.
- 1:16:02Hit it. Yeah.
- 1:16:03And there's a spot for them. Well, they're supposed to.
- 1:16:07Enter what you have on the 2. 40 not what the scanner said you
- 1:16:11did Yeah, but I still I write 30 but sometimes I I mean I've.
- 1:16:15I've taken like 2 breaks to equal 30 usually and management
- 1:16:21can enter in or whoever is doing your time keeping an RMSS can
- 1:16:25enter that blanket number of time.
- 1:16:28Right, but they're supposed to. They're supposed to adjust it to
- 1:16:32what, you're 42? 40 says yeah, well and if
- 1:16:35management isn't entering. Your break time that also can
- 1:16:40affect 2080. It can, but when you stay under
- 1:16:44most of the. Time.
- 1:16:46Yeah, you can, but I don't know about every person.
- 1:16:49That's listening to that going to be listening to this.
- 1:16:51You know, everybody's got a different scenario if you can
- 1:16:55stay. Under most of the.
- 1:16:57Time, yeah, then. You're, you know, you're good in
- 1:17:00theory, but then again, I also like to take my time off, so
- 1:17:04yeah, that helps also. All right, guys, let's wind this
- 1:17:06down for tonight, yeah? Yeah, final thoughts, Josh,
- 1:17:12other is coming. So layer.
- 1:17:15Up. Be safe out there for whatever
- 1:17:17the road conditions are. Don't let yourself get
- 1:17:21overwhelmed if you do take a step back, take a deep breath,
- 1:17:25step back in. Have a good week time meow.
- 1:17:30Well, thank you guys, I hope that this helped some.
- 1:17:33People out there, because I like I said, we, I don't know, we
- 1:17:36usually try and see like what a lot of people are, are asking
- 1:17:39questions about too. So, so if you, if you know of
- 1:17:44somebody who's, who's needing some help, like let them like
- 1:17:48share this with them and let them know.
- 1:17:49I know we still have a lot of people who are asking about the
- 1:17:53Christmas overtime procedures and somebody wrote like, is it
- 1:17:57when is the the Christmas actual time period or something?
- 1:18:01And I was like, that's not what it is like.
- 1:18:04So be resourceful and information is invaluable.
- 1:18:13You know, there's so many different things that you have
- 1:18:17at your fingertips. You know, I have to remind
- 1:18:20myself of that too. Sometimes I'm like, ah, yes, I'm
- 1:18:22going to get off of Facebook and actually educate myself and read
- 1:18:26some stuff. So again, I will in your free
- 1:18:30time, which if you don't have any, or when you're when you're
- 1:18:35going to the bathroom, you know, go through and just start
- 1:18:38reading some random postal manuals, you know, some
- 1:18:41invigorating stuff. But no, seriously though, I
- 1:18:47hope, I hope that this does help you in some way.
- 1:18:50Speaking of the Christmas overtime, it starts this
- 1:18:53Saturday. Coming up, yes, it does.
- 1:18:55Yes, December 6th. The other thing is next Monday,
- 1:19:02again, because I was going to actually going to write this on
- 1:19:04Facebook, December 8th, it's coming up quick, is the end of
- 1:19:09the open enrollment. So if you need to do that this,
- 1:19:14you got to get that done so that you don't don't lose that.
- 1:19:19So, yeah, free time free. Yeah.
- 1:19:22I still have to be my FSA. Yeah, Light blue just reminded
- 1:19:25me. That too.
- 1:19:26So there's Lincoln light blue. For the FSA, yeah, like.
- 1:19:29Light blue said on the on the top of it it.
- 1:19:32Said if you have an FSA account, make sure you're running out of
- 1:19:36time. Like December 8th is the last
- 1:19:39day. So.
- 1:19:40But I got to figure out if I'm going to do that or not, I
- 1:19:44guess. Yeah.
- 1:19:45Yeah, but anyways. Like Josh said, don't get
- 1:19:49overwhelmed and stuff. Again, I'm going to preface this
- 1:19:52again, I know we're in Christmas time holidays.
- 1:19:58If you need help, please reach out to EAP.
- 1:20:01Their number is 1800 EAP for you and they will help you.
- 1:20:08Like let, I just want you guys to know you're not alone.
- 1:20:10I mean, we're, we like we do, we're doing this because we want
- 1:20:14to help educate people and, and let you guys know like we're,
- 1:20:18we're there for you. And the camaraderie of, of
- 1:20:22knowing like, Hey, it could get crazy.
- 1:20:25And we're we're reaching that crazy time of year.
- 1:20:30So don't be afraid to reach out to people if you need some help.
- 1:20:33So layer up also. And don't forget your headlamp
- 1:20:40if you need it, because I know this next week we're going to be
- 1:20:43delivering all of that Black Friday, Cyber Monday fun jolly
- 1:20:48time. So just please be safe, guys.
- 1:20:51So, Kristen, thanks guys. Yeah, definitely as we're.
- 1:20:56The holiday season is starting upon us.
- 1:21:01And you know, headlight, I made sure I recharged my finger light
- 1:21:06gloves the other day. You know, basically stay safe
- 1:21:10out there. I know there was a lot of wet,
- 1:21:12heavy snow that's come through some areas in the last 24 hours
- 1:21:16or so. You know, guys, take precautions
- 1:21:20and make sure that you stay safe out there.
- 1:21:24Stay hydrated as well. The weather seems to be air is
- 1:21:28drier, so you do need to still stay hydrated year round.
- 1:21:32I'll always preach that. And yeah, definitely make sure
- 1:21:37you're staying safe out there and you're taking care of each
- 1:21:39other. And as you know mentioned, if
- 1:21:43you do need that extra assistance, EAP is available for
- 1:21:47everybody. Most importantly, you gotta
- 1:21:49watch out for yourself most importantly, and get home safely
- 1:21:52to your loved ones at the end of each night.
- 1:21:54Better how long that night ends up going.
- 1:21:56As we all know, this is the time of year where we kiss our loved
- 1:22:00ones goodbye in the morning and we'll see them again on
- 1:22:02Christmas morning. But it is what it is.
- 1:22:07And you know, we push through and we we make sure everybody
- 1:22:10has their Christmases every year.
- 1:22:13So that's what we do. On that note, guys, we'll be
- 1:22:17back next week. So everybody have a safe week.
- 1:22:19Bye.
