- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to press play, where we're going through the less
- 0:02Speaker 1: than stellar history of video game movies. I'm Drew Shulman.
- 0:05Speaker 1: With me is my beefcheek bro Jason Wynn. Now, whether
- 0:08Speaker 1: you're watching or playing along, it's time to press play.
- 0:18Speaker 1: This is again one of those weird ones, like I
- 0:19Speaker 1: know the movies more than the games. What about you?
- 0:23Speaker 2: That's fair?
- 0:24Speaker 3: I ooh, maybe this maybe the same amount. I think
- 0:30Speaker 3: we all know Laura Croft, we all know tomb Raider,
- 0:32Speaker 3: we all know she is. I know there was the
- 0:35Speaker 3: reboot series that came out that was like in the
- 0:38Speaker 3: heyday of my video game career. It was like roughly
- 0:40Speaker 3: the twenty tens was when that reboot came out. I
- 0:42Speaker 3: never got to it. I was I think I had
- 0:47Speaker 3: played it once, like the classic games once, and I
- 0:51Speaker 3: hate it.
- 0:51Speaker 1: The controls were awful. It was yeah, that was it.
- 0:55Speaker 1: That was like that that PlayStation era where like no
- 0:58Speaker 1: one really knew how to do controls right yet, so
- 1:01Speaker 1: everything felt really clunky, like I think we look back
- 1:04Speaker 1: at I did give an example Resident Evils, very tanky
- 1:07Speaker 1: ass controls and kind of go like oh, like that
- 1:09Speaker 1: was like a thing that was special. They were just bad.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Controls that we'd like look back on fondly. I think
- 1:14Speaker 1: Two Meter was in that same boat roughly, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:17Speaker 1: for sure.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And I've I've watched these movies before on TV. Did
- 1:21Speaker 3: I remember anything about them? No?
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna say I definitely saw this movie.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I don't think I saw it in theaters. I would
- 1:28Speaker 1: have been like maybe ten or eleven, but I definitely
- 1:31Speaker 1: saw it, like around the time it came out, and
- 1:33Speaker 1: maybe when it first hit like Blockbuster rentals, just to
- 1:37Speaker 1: show some of our age a little bit. But I
- 1:40Speaker 1: think the thing with the games that always kind of
- 1:42Speaker 1: got me was like a friend had it, so I'd
- 1:43Speaker 1: played like the first level or like as far as
- 1:46Speaker 1: I can get before it became too difficult for ten
- 1:48Speaker 1: year old me or whatever old I was at the time, right,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and only like recently in watching some like I think
- 1:53Speaker 1: I was like at the history of speed running or
- 1:55Speaker 1: like glitches or something, and they did a segment of
- 1:57Speaker 1: Larercraft in two Meter, and I was like, wait, if
- 2:00Speaker 1: this gets to aliens, what the fuck? I didn't know that. Yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 1: apparently the games have aliens and bullshit. I mean, like, hey,
- 2:06Speaker 1: these movies get pretty weird and whimsical at least the
- 2:09Speaker 1: first one does.
- 2:10Speaker 3: That does make sense though, because it's very evident that
- 2:13Speaker 3: Tone Raider was in the vein of Indiana Jones and
- 2:17Speaker 3: in this similar era was like the Mummy. Like there
- 2:19Speaker 3: there are these things that got inspired by Indian Indiana Jones,
- 2:23Speaker 3: which in itself was inspired by I believe fifty cerials
- 2:27Speaker 3: were what they were called, right, And so the fact
- 2:29Speaker 3: that one of these things naturally proguests to aliens like
- 2:33Speaker 3: Indiana Jones did, it makes a lot of sense, right,
- 2:37Speaker 3: Flash Gordon that kind of shtick.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of funny, it Iver, Really, it's funny,
- 2:41Speaker 1: like I always sort of draw that line, like I
- 2:42Speaker 1: always like, for some reason in my brain, there's like
- 2:45Speaker 1: when you think of sci fi, that's like I really
- 2:47Speaker 1: draw the line of like science fiction versus fantasy. And
- 2:51Speaker 1: to me, like by a Croft, while it was set
- 2:53Speaker 1: in a world that was more realistic, it was more
- 2:55Speaker 1: of like, oh, we'll go with like the fantasy element
- 2:58Speaker 1: of like Greek gods or in you know, Norse mythology
- 3:02Speaker 1: to go the other way, and I think Indiana Jones
- 3:04Speaker 1: was the same boats are going the other way was
- 3:06Speaker 1: always so jarring, and like I mean Indiana Jones tried it.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Was it successful. No, but we don't know the answer
- 3:14Speaker 1: to that. It wasn't.
- 3:17Speaker 3: It's not the worst Indiana Jones, So maybe give a
- 3:20Speaker 3: little creed, maybe give it a little slack. I will
- 3:24Speaker 3: say the one thing that is maybe the most notable
- 3:27Speaker 3: about this franchise is Angelina Jolie was the perfect pick
- 3:32Speaker 3: for Lara Croft. There is no other person that could
- 3:35Speaker 3: play this character. She was born to play no one else.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But as well, like it's a cyclical thing where I
- 3:42Speaker 3: can only imagine Laara Croft in live action as her.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it's you know you hear Like there was apparently
- 3:49Speaker 1: it's supposed to be a third movie, but she opted
- 3:51Speaker 1: out and it just never happened. And like what I
- 3:53Speaker 1: think years later, think twenty eighteen, maybe they tried rebooting
- 3:56Speaker 1: the franchise. I don't know, we're not covering those today,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but I know they Yes. I feel like even before
- 4:03Speaker 1: it was like a twinkle in anyone's eye they were
- 4:05Speaker 1: gonna do a movie. If you ask someone like, oh,
- 4:07Speaker 1: who's your dream cast for letter Craft, it was just like, oh, Angela,
- 4:10Speaker 1: Joe Lee, there's no question even ask that question.
- 4:13Speaker 2: No, I do love you.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Set before I was a twinkle on anyone else's eye
- 4:17Speaker 3: because it's like because in my mind, it's like when
- 4:19Speaker 3: they first uh, when they did the first film ever,
- 4:23Speaker 3: and it was that it's the it's the train, that
- 4:26Speaker 3: it's just the twenty second video of a train, and
- 4:29Speaker 3: everyone left the audience.
- 4:30Speaker 2: There was some schmuck who was like, you.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Know what, I could see someone named Angelina Jo't leafing
- 4:35Speaker 3: law across the tomb.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Right, that's why this is going. That's the future of
- 4:39Speaker 1: this medium. My god, your fucking action for that is
- 4:42Speaker 1: so good. I am so packed. It's so good. Well
- 4:48Speaker 1: for anyone who has not watched these films with us,
- 4:52Speaker 1: And for once, I'm gonna I'm gonna cheat it in
- 4:54Speaker 1: and say, like, for half of this, you missed out
- 4:56Speaker 1: on a good movie. Oh we'll guess. Well, we'll discuss
- 4:59Speaker 1: all of the movie, but to recap the film at
- 5:03Speaker 1: least the first film and kind of cover the second
- 5:04Speaker 1: film at the same time. This is the adventurer of
- 5:07Speaker 1: Lara Croft, exploring lost empires and discovering valuable treasure in
- 5:11Speaker 1: her daily life, but a secret from the past of
- 5:14Speaker 1: her father, a missing archaeologist, will lead her to a
- 5:16Speaker 1: more lost empires and even more valuable treasures. Lara Croft
- 5:20Speaker 1: faces off against the Illuminati to recover a magic triangle
- 5:24Speaker 1: her father warns is too powerful to fall into the
- 5:26Speaker 1: wrong hands. And I like to point out it's literally
- 5:29Speaker 1: called the triangle. It's not like just oh, it's a
- 5:32Speaker 1: triangular shape thing and it's called the something of something
- 5:35Speaker 1: or something. It's no, yeah, this is a magic triangle
- 5:38Speaker 1: that lets you travel through time.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Similarly, the mcguffin defined that said triangle was the clock,
- 5:46Speaker 3: and it's only known as the clock, I believe. Yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 3: so you know, it's just straight to the point efficient.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I mean that's I think the biggest difference
- 5:56Speaker 1: in these movies is the first movie gets like right
- 5:58Speaker 1: to the point real fast. It's like, here's the key,
- 6:02Speaker 1: this guy's gonna try to steal it from you. Uh,
- 6:04Speaker 1: we're gonna go find the two half of this triangle.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Awesome final combat with bad guy like everything video it's good,
- 6:11Speaker 1: very video gaming, very like linear video game progression levels.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And then the second movie said, why should we do
- 6:16Speaker 1: any of the stuff that worked?
- 6:18Speaker 3: Dude, it's god, should I say this now? Spoiler alert?
- 6:24Speaker 3: I think the second movie is the worst of all
- 6:26Speaker 3: the movies we've seen. Maybe maybe not objectively as a film,
- 6:31Speaker 3: but it's at the bottom for me right now.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I think I need to really do some serious pondering.
- 6:37Speaker 1: But like I am not opposed to that position for
- 6:39Speaker 1: this movie.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, It's sequels do not do well in our
- 6:44Speaker 3: impressed point.
- 6:46Speaker 1: It really feels like they they try really hard with
- 6:49Speaker 1: the first one when they do and they end up
- 6:52Speaker 1: with something like surprisingly decent that's like a nice amash
- 6:55Speaker 1: of the game. It feels right that fans enjoy and
- 6:58Speaker 1: then they go, Okay, let's just do all the trophy
- 7:02Speaker 1: bullshit that movies do and make a second one as
- 7:04Speaker 1: fast as physically possible, and even if it bombs, will
- 7:07Speaker 1: still make money because people came to see it. Right.
- 7:10Speaker 3: It's a tax fuckat we wrote off a Texas who
- 7:14Speaker 3: gives a shit about anything, just put.
- 7:16Speaker 1: It out exactly like I mean it. It's like I
- 7:20Speaker 1: really got to say, like I know, it's really far
- 7:22Speaker 1: down the road for us, but like I'm kind of
- 7:24Speaker 1: excited because I haven't seen it yet, but I've only
- 7:26Speaker 1: heard like positive things. Is the Five Nights at Freddy movie,
- 7:30Speaker 1: Oh I've yeah, yeah, that's a good one. Again. People
- 7:34Speaker 1: have told me, like, oh, like, if you're a fan
- 7:35Speaker 1: of the franchise, like they really do it justice, and
- 7:38Speaker 1: like if you're not a fan, you might be a
- 7:39Speaker 1: little bit lost for a bit, but like that's okay.
- 7:42Speaker 1: A movie doesn't need to be made for every single person.
- 7:45Speaker 1: It's okay if a movie's made for a specific audience. Yes,
- 7:49Speaker 1: you might not get as wide acceptance as other movies might,
- 7:54Speaker 1: but like the audience you want will enjoy it and
- 7:56Speaker 1: come back for more. Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, there was something I won't say special, but
- 8:03Speaker 3: there was something competent about the first film that just
- 8:07Speaker 3: became something something off. That being said, if you're more
- 8:11Speaker 3: familiar with the movies, maybe not so much the video games.
- 8:13Speaker 3: A little bit about those here debating in nineteen ninety six.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Tone Raider is an action adventure game focusing on gunplay,
- 8:22Speaker 3: puzzle solving, and platforming the best parts of nineties gaming,
- 8:26Speaker 3: and it features the British archaeologist Laura Croft. Her groundbreaking
- 8:31Speaker 3: polygons had made her one of the most iconic video
- 8:34Speaker 3: game characters of all time. We love early PlayStation graphics.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Now that being said, well, technically it's still going on.
- 8:41Speaker 3: The most recent release being the remastered collection that crazy
- 8:47Speaker 3: switch title that was mused recently. It's been shopped around
- 8:52Speaker 3: by four different studios the franchise, which I did not realize.
- 8:57Speaker 3: People might be more familiar with the reboots that we
- 9:00Speaker 3: mentioned earlier as well, but there was there was a
- 9:02Speaker 3: passing of the torch four different times here. So the
- 9:06Speaker 3: future of Tom Rader is up for debate. We'll see,
- 9:10Speaker 3: we'll see.
- 9:10Speaker 1: You know what. Like I have dabbled in the newer games,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I will say like they definitely caught my interest. They
- 9:16Speaker 1: looked good, The trailers had me peaked. I think I
- 9:18Speaker 1: eventually got a bunch of them for free through insert
- 9:21Speaker 1: any number of programs that give out free games every
- 9:23Speaker 1: few months. Yeah, yeah, but like genuinely they like they
- 9:27Speaker 1: feel like I've only played the first level of one
- 9:29Speaker 1: or two of them, but they were really fun feeling games,
- 9:31Speaker 1: Like they really, you know what, Like it says something
- 9:34Speaker 1: to modernize a game to meet today's standards without losing
- 9:37Speaker 1: the spirit of the original. And while I haven't played
- 9:40Speaker 1: either game fully enough to really like compare them the
- 9:44Speaker 1: right way as someone coming in very fresh to both
- 9:47Speaker 1: having just tried them as a child, the originals and
- 9:49Speaker 1: playing the new ones briefly now it's like, oh yeah,
- 9:51Speaker 1: like this still feels like what I expected to feel
- 9:54Speaker 1: in a two Rader game. For sure.
- 9:56Speaker 3: From what I understood of the Rebit series, it didn't
- 9:59Speaker 3: do anything ground by any means, but it was another
- 10:02Speaker 3: flavor of a video game that most of us were
- 10:04Speaker 3: familiar with and was competent enough to have I think
- 10:07Speaker 3: three games total, which is a good mark generally speaking.
- 10:11Speaker 3: It seemed like if you liked Uncharted, or if you
- 10:13Speaker 3: liked I don't know, Far Cry or insert any other
- 10:17Speaker 3: like action adventure game of that era, you would have
- 10:20Speaker 3: liked those games.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And I mean like people alwaysly choked that Nathan Drake
- 10:25Speaker 1: was basically there was basically dude raider. It was basically
- 10:28Speaker 1: what if Larra Kroff was a boy?
- 10:31Speaker 3: And we find out in these movies. These movies are
- 10:34Speaker 3: basically what if James Bond was a girl? That's what
- 10:38Speaker 3: my impression is, you know what the no I will
- 10:40Speaker 3: actually push back slightly on that. I think I ultimately
- 10:42Speaker 3: I think you're right, But I think the first movie
- 10:44Speaker 3: specifically in the fact they don't they don't give her
- 10:47Speaker 3: a like necessary obvious love interest, and they don't sort
- 10:50Speaker 3: of follow that angle per se. I always to me,
- 10:54Speaker 3: James Bond is always so like the sleeping around, the
- 10:58Speaker 3: being suave of the flirting is always so important. While
- 11:00Speaker 3: she definitely does some flirting, yeah, it's never like it
- 11:04Speaker 3: never it never crossed the line where it felt like, oh,
- 11:06Speaker 3: you're just the fact that she's a woman, You're using
- 11:08Speaker 3: this to make the movie more like titillating, right right,
- 11:11Speaker 3: And there was, I mean, let's get straight into it.
- 11:14Speaker 3: There are moments in the very beginning of this movie.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Ian.
- 11:16Speaker 3: The beginning of this movie sets the tone incredibly quickly.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I think we get a very two thousand. It's opening
- 11:24Speaker 3: scene where Lara's like practicing on a robot. It's a
- 11:30Speaker 3: CGI robot, there's gun fu, there's techno playing in the background.
- 11:34Speaker 3: It's very of the era, and there's lots of establishing
- 11:38Speaker 3: scenes and shots that that says Lara's a sexy woman
- 11:43Speaker 3: who's also a rich, fucking tough Yeah.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Very much so. I also have to just give like
- 11:48Speaker 1: a kudos to this movie for a moment of like
- 11:51Speaker 1: for how poor the CG is on those robots when
- 11:54Speaker 1: we later see them not in CG like the practical bills, Yeah,
- 11:58Speaker 1: they look so good, like I wish they had the
- 12:01Speaker 1: tech to make those work.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely, I think that the production value
- 12:06Speaker 3: on this film it's it's it's the most recent movie
- 12:09Speaker 3: we've reviewed obviously up to this point. But it doesn't
- 12:14Speaker 3: it looks how it should, if that makes any sense.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Sometimes you'll see a movie and you go, Wow, that
- 12:19Speaker 3: cg's really bad. Stuart Little in two thousand and one
- 12:21Speaker 3: had better CG than this twenty twenty five. The FUX
- 12:24Speaker 3: going on here, you know what I mean? Like sometimes
- 12:26Speaker 3: that happens. This movie looks very good.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Yeah, like despite how bad the CG is, Like it
- 12:32Speaker 1: feels like it feels out of place, even in the
- 12:35Speaker 1: moment because it almost feels gamy. Yeah right, But the
- 12:38Speaker 1: entire opening scene like that again, just like like you said,
- 12:41Speaker 1: it does such a good job of painting who she
- 12:43Speaker 1: is because we've literally got this, like the interaction she
- 12:46Speaker 1: has with her her techie dude, Yeah Bryce.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Is his name, I don't remember. It's so two thousands. Her,
- 12:52Speaker 3: her surrounding cast, and her villains are so two thousands.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Please, Oh yeah, they're like they're all such cliches. Like
- 12:58Speaker 1: even even the butler with like a woman's name Hillary,
- 13:01Speaker 1: it's just like, oh, is that that's that's his name. Yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 1: it's just like it's one of those things where it's
- 13:06Speaker 1: like really because it just the men in her life
- 13:09Speaker 1: are feminized. Is probably what they were going for there too,
- 13:13Speaker 1: because the nerdy guy iman Like you've watched the movie
- 13:15Speaker 1: from the early two thousands, if this guy could have
- 13:18Speaker 1: been played by Seth Green, he would have been yes,
- 13:22Speaker 1: very much. So, oh, I will give kudos to the butler.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I do love the butler fully, like, just oh, here
- 13:27Speaker 1: are ruck is downstairs, Put it on my bulletproof vest,
- 13:30Speaker 1: cock my shotgun and go shoot some bad guys, like
- 13:33Speaker 1: just like I like that. He's not in that that
- 13:35Speaker 1: he's not just like a butler. He's actually like as
- 13:37Speaker 1: much as like Lara doesn't need to be saved, he's
- 13:40Speaker 1: still like, well, I gotta pract the house and my
- 13:42Speaker 1: boss for sure.
- 13:44Speaker 3: And he's he does what a cartoonish butler should. He
- 13:47Speaker 3: always has a quip in a and a snip, doesn't.
- 13:50Speaker 1: He Oh he does? Yeah, hell he is. He is
- 13:52Speaker 1: so cartoon like image of a butler. It's amazing.
- 13:58Speaker 3: And she is supposed to be a posh British person.
- 14:03Speaker 3: That accent is rough and it never.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's it's you know what, Like, I appreciate
- 14:10Speaker 1: it's right, but it's it's not. It's not winning any awards. No, no, no, no, no no.
- 14:17Speaker 3: There's some moments where it's passable. It's passable, like one
- 14:20Speaker 3: of the more subtler moments, but there's there's a lot
- 14:23Speaker 3: of Quippi one liners in here, and it's it's not good.
- 14:26Speaker 3: That's the one mark against Angelina Joe Lee.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Uh.
- 14:30Speaker 3: She has these moments too where I'm not gonna mark
- 14:33Speaker 3: it against her. This definitely was like a director's thing
- 14:35Speaker 3: or a producer thing. Is it just me or did
- 14:39Speaker 3: they try to make her like the video game character?
- 14:41Speaker 3: She has a walk early on where her arm's at
- 14:43Speaker 3: forty five degrees. It's a very exaggerated walk.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I admit it. I'm as straight male.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Is it mere?
- 14:49Speaker 1: Like?
- 14:50Speaker 3: Is the costuming department trying to make her boobs pointier?
- 14:54Speaker 1: So they actually did? Okay, I'm not crazy. Uh yeah.
- 14:59Speaker 1: So in the video game, Larakrof's character is a thirty
- 15:03Speaker 1: six double D. Why do I have these facts? Don't
- 15:05Speaker 1: ask questions? And we didn't research my next line. Angelina
- 15:11Speaker 1: Dooley is naturally a thirty six C and was padded
- 15:14Speaker 1: to a thirty six D for the movie. They felt
- 15:18Speaker 1: that the padding anything beyond that to get to the
- 15:21Speaker 1: double d's was too unrealistic.
- 15:25Speaker 2: This was directed by a man.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, very much so, same thing. Apparently the shower
- 15:30Speaker 1: scene was supposed to be like full nudity like, so
- 15:33Speaker 1: allegedly a lot of it was cut to kind of
- 15:35Speaker 1: keep a PG thirteen rating, which obviously it did get to, right,
- 15:38Speaker 1: But I think the fact they don't sexualize her, like, yes,
- 15:42Speaker 1: she's an attractive woman, the character, the actress, Like, I'm
- 15:45Speaker 1: not arguing any of that, but they don't actively go
- 15:49Speaker 1: out of their way to put her in skimpier than
- 15:51Speaker 1: necessary outfits, like yes, kind of iconic to the character, right,
- 15:56Speaker 1: but like we never like it's literally we don't get
- 15:59Speaker 1: her in a bikini until the second movie, and even
- 16:01Speaker 1: then it feels like we just put her in a
- 16:02Speaker 1: bikini because we wanted to make her sexier.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Right Yeah, No, I and I think I want to believe,
- 16:09Speaker 3: is what I'll say that Angelina Jolie probably had some
- 16:12Speaker 3: thoughts about that, if I'm being honest, because she feels
- 16:16Speaker 3: like there are moments in this movie where she Lara
- 16:20Speaker 3: Croft specific. The character is very respectful and knowledgeable about
- 16:25Speaker 3: the different regions that she's in. She does the classic
- 16:28Speaker 3: Indiana Jones thing of like knowing every single fact. Ah,
- 16:32Speaker 3: the Illuminati in sixteen ninety two sailed the Ocean blue,
- 16:36Speaker 3: and that's what that triangle means.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Is ocean blue? See for Catwoman? Whatever? Right? That that
- 16:41Speaker 1: whole that whole shick? What is this puzzle you're unsolving?
- 16:48Speaker 3: It's a classic line from Adam West's Batman, where because
- 16:52Speaker 3: he's the world's greatest detective, he goes see in the
- 16:55Speaker 3: sea See for Catwoman. It's a It's a famous line
- 16:58Speaker 3: from the movie. Don't I remember the line? Yeah, yeah,
- 17:02Speaker 3: that's amazing.
- 17:03Speaker 2: It's just a meme.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Yeah, pretty fishy.
- 17:05Speaker 1: What happened to me on that ladder?
- 17:08Speaker 5: You mean, but there's a fish that could be a
- 17:10Speaker 5: But wait, it happened at sea see See for Catwoman.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Anyways, she does a little bit of that. But I
- 17:17Speaker 3: feel that aspect of Larakraft being respectful and knowing the
- 17:20Speaker 3: languages and so and so forth, I want to believe
- 17:23Speaker 3: that is something that Angelina Jolie chose to impartance to
- 17:27Speaker 3: the character because she is a background I believe she
- 17:30Speaker 3: was part of the Peace Corps, and we know that
- 17:33Speaker 3: she loves to pick up children in different countries, so
- 17:35Speaker 3: I imagine she's spent time in those countries.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Well, so fun time. The first child she adopted from
- 17:41Speaker 1: Cambodia was because she fell in love with Cambodia while
- 17:44Speaker 1: filming this movie. This was the start of her journey. Yes,
- 17:49Speaker 1: the East, the Eastern World.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Like Adam West's Batman, I am also the world's greatest
- 17:54Speaker 3: detective see is for Catman.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm pretty make a shark repelling joke here, and
- 17:59Speaker 1: I can't. Some days you just can't get rid of
- 18:02Speaker 1: a bomb. There you go. But yeah, so but you
- 18:05Speaker 1: actually know what you do. Make a good point. Something
- 18:06Speaker 1: I did learn in the second film while looking for
- 18:08Speaker 1: fun facts was that she actually pushed back against the
- 18:11Speaker 1: padding a second time, being like it seems so unnecessary,
- 18:14Speaker 1: and they were like, Okay, she looks better.
- 18:16Speaker 3: She looks healthier San's padding, But just in general, she
- 18:21Speaker 3: looks much more alive and vibrant and healthy in that
- 18:24Speaker 3: second film. Everything else about that second film aside, Yeah,
- 18:28Speaker 3: she looks great.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I mean, like, the amount of training she did for
- 18:31Speaker 1: this movie is like, I have some facts. Later on
- 18:34Speaker 1: that'll just like that. Even though I was like blown
- 18:35Speaker 1: away by I'm like, I understand method acting, but this
- 18:37Speaker 1: is nuts. Yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I did enjoy that as well.
- 18:41Speaker 3: About this movie, it seemed to she's rich, tough, but
- 18:47Speaker 3: it also seems to establish little world building things where
- 18:49Speaker 3: like at the end of the movie we find out
- 18:51Speaker 3: she has this picture of her with a bunch of
- 18:53Speaker 3: like seemingly sas dudes, So she isn't quote unquote Mary Sue.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I hate that term.
- 19:00Speaker 3: But the reason Lara Croft is able to survive the
- 19:03Speaker 3: things that we see in this movie is because she
- 19:04Speaker 3: has assumed military training of some sort on top of
- 19:09Speaker 3: being an archaeologist. So it's like Indiana Jones got through
- 19:12Speaker 3: the things he did through sheer luck and will she
- 19:16Speaker 3: has military training.
- 19:17Speaker 1: If that makes any sense. That's necessary. Yeah, they didn't have.
- 19:20Speaker 1: But I think that's one of the biggest points for
- 19:22Speaker 1: this movie, like one of my number one like gold
- 19:24Speaker 1: stars for this film. Yeah, she is genuinely a talented
- 19:29Speaker 1: archaeologist and talented in combat and talented marksman. I think
- 19:33Speaker 1: it's in the second movie we get the scene where
- 19:35Speaker 1: she's doing the like, uh target range on horseback. Yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 1: which again is like what a bizarre scene, but like again,
- 19:44Speaker 1: it paints a picture of like, this is someone who
- 19:46Speaker 1: is trained and knows what they're doing. It isn't just
- 19:48Speaker 1: getting lucky like Indiana Jones kind of is like he
- 19:51Speaker 1: is just an archaeologist who happens to stumble into the
- 19:54Speaker 1: right answer sometimes.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Yeah right right right yeah. Now that all being said,
- 19:59Speaker 3: her opposite number of this movie less Indiana Jones, more
- 20:03Speaker 3: so James Bond. Here we get this introduction to a
- 20:07Speaker 3: young Jorra mormont Ian Glenn so thin, so so dark
- 20:14Speaker 3: and brooding.
- 20:16Speaker 1: My god, he's looking great in this movie. Oh he
- 20:18Speaker 1: really does. Genuinely, I couldn't figure out why I recognized him,
- 20:22Speaker 1: and I think I did pop up and I am
- 20:23Speaker 1: to be in like scroll that I just must have
- 20:25Speaker 1: not gotten far enough to catch Game of Thrones. As
- 20:28Speaker 1: soon as your notes came up, I was like, right,
- 20:30Speaker 1: that's why I know this asshole. Yep, yep.
- 20:33Speaker 3: I think he played a live action Batman at one point,
- 20:36Speaker 3: and I think that casting director's inspiration was this movie,
- 20:40Speaker 3: because he's he's hamming it up, he's he's a dick,
- 20:42Speaker 3: he's rich, he's got a sniveling henchman, which I love yes,
- 20:47Speaker 3: the background every now and then going yeah or Mormon.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a there's a recurring joke I always see,
- 20:53Speaker 1: which is like, how do you make sure that the
- 20:54Speaker 1: audience knows how evil your bad guy is?
- 20:57Speaker 4: Uh?
- 20:58Speaker 1: And they did such a good job here, I think
- 21:00Speaker 1: the entire time we see him, especially when they're trying
- 21:03Speaker 1: to tear down that like door to the temple m hm,
- 21:06Speaker 1: where he's just like sitting on this like lovely plush
- 21:08Speaker 1: red velvet stelf with like an assortment of fruit, not
- 21:12Speaker 1: even watching the work happen, like his back turned to
- 21:15Speaker 1: them as they're like heaving, and even Daniel Craig joins
- 21:19Speaker 1: in on the heaving and trying to pulp pull the
- 21:20Speaker 1: dance ring at a time, right right, The timing in
- 21:23Speaker 1: this movie, I swear to God, is my biggest gripe.
- 21:26Speaker 3: But also you mentioned Daniel Craig a young yeah thin
- 21:33Speaker 3: dam not yet James Bond. It's oh my note here
- 21:39Speaker 3: was Laura Croft and James Bond were ex lovers?
- 21:43Speaker 1: How amazing? How amazing? This again one of those like
- 21:47Speaker 1: I can't remember a single Daniel Craig roll before Casino Royale.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And again I'd seen this movie way younger, so none
- 21:56Speaker 1: of it really stuck. But lerra Croft, so to see
- 21:59Speaker 1: him in this I was like, there was a moment
- 22:00Speaker 1: I was like, oh, that looks just like is it Craig?
- 22:05Speaker 1: Am I just equating random hot British man.
- 22:09Speaker 3: First we had a a tight Door Marmott, Now a
- 22:12Speaker 3: tight James Bond.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah. And there was a moment in this movie
- 22:16Speaker 1: where I almost like wanted to kind of go like, ugh,
- 22:18Speaker 1: like way to ruin something was after all this badass
- 22:21Speaker 1: like Lara Croft stuff to just have like random shower
- 22:25Speaker 1: scene which we learned was supposed to be more revealing
- 22:28Speaker 1: and like sexual, right, but obviously cut And then we
- 22:32Speaker 1: equal opportunity we get Daniel Craig's much more revealing shower
- 22:36Speaker 1: scene tight like literally the Austin Powers just covering the
- 22:41Speaker 1: junk with setting.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Yeah, a phrase we used often in this show is tight. Also,
- 22:48Speaker 3: it was it was in this scene where I began
- 22:50Speaker 3: to question, we need an American man to balance the
- 22:52Speaker 3: obviously British Laura Cross. Who are we gonna get Daniel
- 22:58Speaker 3: fucking Greg James goddamn Bond? Uh famously Welsh?
- 23:02Speaker 1: I believe it?
- 23:02Speaker 3: No, that's that's Pierce Brasen Yeah, he's he's really hamming
- 23:06Speaker 3: up the American too.
- 23:07Speaker 1: He's really got the nasal down.
- 23:09Speaker 3: It's it's really crazy for them to swap accents.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Yes, I love the What was I gonna call it
- 23:16Speaker 1: was the foreign exchange accents.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Foreign exchange accents is great.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I just think this is where he started working on
- 23:23Speaker 1: his his American accent. And look where we've gotten today
- 23:26Speaker 1: with knives out. That's true, that's true.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Thinking back on the movie, actually there is a moment.
- 23:32Speaker 3: It's it's that thing that you're talking about where he
- 23:33Speaker 3: joins in on the laborers and Ian Glenn doesn't to
- 23:37Speaker 3: show like the characters.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yeah, uh he there's a.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Phrase that said he's like, all right, so we got
- 23:43Speaker 3: to get faster, and then Daniel Craig like pulls up
- 23:45Speaker 3: in the scene and starts moving it. I didn't realize
- 23:48Speaker 3: that was him saying that, which is I thought someone
- 23:53Speaker 3: in the background had said that, and then like Daniel
- 23:55Speaker 3: Craig rolled up.
- 23:57Speaker 2: But yeah, he's he's he's great.
- 23:59Speaker 3: He plays the double triple crossing ex lover trope and
- 24:04Speaker 3: he's very good in that role.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie to you. They do the love
- 24:07Speaker 1: interest where it's like we have some history, there could
- 24:10Speaker 1: be a future, but it doesn't need to be a
- 24:12Speaker 1: defining part of her character or like a major plot point.
- 24:15Speaker 1: It can just be they're humans who live in this world.
- 24:19Speaker 1: It doesn't need to be relevant to the plot kind
- 24:21Speaker 1: of thing, like, yes, she wants to save an old
- 24:22Speaker 1: friend of hers, that's fine for sure.
- 24:26Speaker 3: One up this movie has over James Bond is treating
- 24:28Speaker 3: the quote unquote villainous romantic interest with some dimension and
- 24:33Speaker 3: allowing that relationship to have some dimension as well. But
- 24:37Speaker 3: also I call this movie James Bond because I've never
- 24:40Speaker 3: watched any of the Pierce Brosnan and James Bond movies.
- 24:43Speaker 3: This is how I imagine.
- 24:44Speaker 2: It would go.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Because when Lara, the first time we see Lara Croft
- 24:48Speaker 3: get up and go towards the adventure, that aspect of
- 24:51Speaker 3: the hero's journey right to Leave. She passes by her
- 24:55Speaker 3: mansion and she chooses a motorcycle and there's a shot.
- 25:00Speaker 3: It happens in five seconds. She gets off on a
- 25:02Speaker 3: motorcycle which zooms past her Assen Martin casually parked in
- 25:08Speaker 3: her mansion, and then she zooms past the Tower Bridge
- 25:11Speaker 3: in London. Yeah, and it was like, hey, we're British.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Yeah. It was just like, let's just let's remind you
- 25:20Speaker 1: how British we are real quick.
- 25:22Speaker 3: I felt Matt's voice in my ear go Jesus fucking Christ,
- 25:27Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Before we leave her mansion, we do need to touch
- 25:31Speaker 1: on probably the most bizarre scene in this movie in
- 25:34Speaker 1: my opinion, and that is before bedtime, in her like pajamas, oh,
- 25:40Speaker 1: doing an aerialist workout session. Yesh yeah yeah yeah. Then
- 25:44Speaker 1: pivots into the home invasion attack, which is just, yeah,
- 25:49Speaker 1: another cliche. I did love your note about that, where
- 25:52Speaker 1: you were like, this is casual for her. I actually
- 25:54Speaker 1: have the same thought.
- 25:54Speaker 3: I just didn't write it down that she sets herself
- 25:57Speaker 3: up for like Ariel Acrobat. Before bedtime, her butler passes
- 26:02Speaker 3: by her and he's like, have a good night, miss Croft,
- 26:05Speaker 3: don't try to hurt yourself or whatever. And I love
- 26:07Speaker 3: the nonchalant attitude he has about it, because I think
- 26:10Speaker 3: he's like, fuck these rich tops. I think his attitude
- 26:14Speaker 3: about it like it's so weird.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I mean yes, I think that's definitely the attitude he
- 26:18Speaker 1: has of just like it's kind of like the like
- 26:21Speaker 1: if you're so rich and you have so much time,
- 26:23Speaker 1: like the idea that you just sort of pick up
- 26:25Speaker 1: new hobbies that get more and more eclectic and bizarre
- 26:28Speaker 1: and niche because you have the time and money. Yeah,
- 26:31Speaker 1: and for her, it's also this level of athleticism and like,
- 26:36Speaker 1: you know, aerobics to it that is still like it's
- 26:38Speaker 1: not just like for her, we see it translates into
- 26:42Speaker 1: her fighting style and actually becomes part of the fight,
- 26:46Speaker 1: which I think is an amazing Like again, it's super
- 26:48Speaker 1: like a very obvious setup for a scene in a movie.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But the idea that, like, as someone who adventures and
- 26:55Speaker 1: his encountered fights like this before, clearly why not have
- 26:59Speaker 1: this set of skills case you will find yourself swinging
- 27:01Speaker 1: around fighting things, which we actually do kind of see
- 27:04Speaker 1: her do in the first tune, now that I say it.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Out loud, Yeah, yeah, yeah, No, I think you're absolutely right.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I think you've gotten to the head of the director
- 27:12Speaker 3: and everyone who's trying.
- 27:12Speaker 1: To build up this world.
- 27:14Speaker 3: And I'm still stuck in the butler's head because in
- 27:17Speaker 3: his brain, he's like, this fucking rich girl she went
- 27:20Speaker 3: to she went to Cambodia once, and now she's come back.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Like this, Oh my god.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I thinks she can speak the language.
- 27:28Speaker 3: He thinks she could just pick up kids anytime she
- 27:30Speaker 3: wants an aero acrobatics God.
- 27:33Speaker 1: In my mind, I think like, as we're watching the movie,
- 27:35Speaker 1: it's like Angelina Jolian Lara Croft are becoming one person.
- 27:39Speaker 3: Well, one specific aspect of that is in the film
- 27:45Speaker 3: she has a distant father as her Obi Wan Kenobi
- 27:51Speaker 3: as her as her old mentor. He comes in her
- 27:53Speaker 3: envisions as a ghost right and her father has played
- 27:57Speaker 3: none other by John Voight, who is Angelina Joe's real father, who.
- 28:02Speaker 2: She hates infamously, like infamously hates. What the hell happened there?
- 28:07Speaker 1: I don't know, I I will be honest. I didn't
- 28:10Speaker 1: go two into it, so I figured that could be
- 28:11Speaker 1: a whole other thing we don't need to get into
- 28:13Speaker 1: on our show, sure, right, but like I could even
- 28:16Speaker 1: find like a reference of like when their animosity began.
- 28:19Speaker 1: So I don't know if it was before the filming
- 28:23Speaker 1: of this movie, but based on something in your notes,
- 28:27Speaker 1: what if you mentioned the one time they have a
- 28:29Speaker 1: scene together, it feels like they're clearly not in the room.
- 28:31Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, it's photoshopped.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Is that the so this he comes to her in
- 28:35Speaker 3: flashbacks or like secret messages. He's like narrating a letter
- 28:40Speaker 3: or something like that. And so they at the very
- 28:42Speaker 3: end of the movie they finally have like a scene together,
- 28:44Speaker 3: and it's so evident that they're not in the same
- 28:48Speaker 3: room at all. Like it's not behind the shoulder shots,
- 28:51Speaker 3: it's just basse shots. And then there is a moment
- 28:54Speaker 3: where they like touch or interact, but it's split down
- 28:57Speaker 3: the middle of the of the fucking screen. So it's
- 28:59Speaker 3: a very evident that they've green screened each other in
- 29:02Speaker 3: or comped it in. And it's like whatever the animosity
- 29:07Speaker 3: started it, it had to have been around this movie, right,
- 29:10Speaker 3: I do need.
- 29:11Speaker 1: To share with you that was not green screen That's
- 29:13Speaker 1: the only scene they did together.
- 29:15Speaker 5: That's wild because like I watched it, assuming they were
- 29:19Speaker 5: in the same room, and like knowing you obviously don't
- 29:21Speaker 5: like each other, and I'm like, like, it's clear how
- 29:23Speaker 5: little they want to be doing this together kind of
- 29:25Speaker 5: thing like that, Yeah, they even.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Both agreed to do this movie, Like what was that
- 29:28Speaker 1: I need the story? I need to give me that
- 29:30Speaker 1: like that deep dive into the history of this one,
- 29:32Speaker 1: But like, no, that's just how little they wanted to
- 29:35Speaker 1: be near each other.
- 29:36Speaker 2: That's wild.
- 29:37Speaker 1: That's wild.
- 29:37Speaker 2: I think you.
- 29:38Speaker 3: I think if you were to go back to two
- 29:40Speaker 3: thousand and one and you and me were alive, you
- 29:42Speaker 3: could have picked either of us to be Angelina and
- 29:44Speaker 3: Jolie's father, and we would have had better chemistry. I
- 29:47Speaker 3: would have sat there and I've been like, come on, man,
- 29:50Speaker 3: I'm worried about you. He went to Cambodia once.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I understand, but.
- 29:57Speaker 2: I need you to get a job, be fatherly.
- 30:00Speaker 1: You know, yeah, I can see it. I can see
- 30:02Speaker 1: to you. But we we do. We do leave the mansion,
- 30:12Speaker 1: as you said, We get our nice little uh showing
- 30:14Speaker 1: off a British we are moment, and we dive right
- 30:17Speaker 1: into tube rating. Fuck.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's uh, it's it's almost instantaneous, and it's
- 30:22Speaker 3: and it's light, right, I guess it's light in a sense.
- 30:25Speaker 3: It's I think the situation from memory the first two
- 30:28Speaker 3: is it's a bunch of goons.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Laura's like, she's cheeky.
- 30:32Speaker 3: She's like, you're about to do the thing wrong, and
- 30:34Speaker 3: they're like, what are you talking about? And she's she
- 30:37Speaker 3: doesn't come into it. Guns blazing and murders fifty dudes.
- 30:41Speaker 3: She gets out of it through wit and her superior
- 30:45Speaker 3: intellect on the subject matter at hands. And I only
- 30:48Speaker 3: am notating that right now because I specifically want to
- 30:50Speaker 3: say that that does not happen in the second movie
- 30:53Speaker 3: at all.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Yeah, so fun, another little fun fact that I just
- 30:57Speaker 1: thought of it I remembered right now. In this film,
- 30:59Speaker 1: she does not shoot anyone. Wow, there is not a
- 31:04Speaker 1: single death by gun. The closest we get I think
- 31:07Speaker 1: she knocks out a goon with the butt of her
- 31:08Speaker 1: gun during the home invasion, right, the robot shoots, the
- 31:13Speaker 1: robots shoots the statues, seven magazines and a statue's fucking fake? Gotcha?
- 31:19Speaker 3: Okay, that is a fun fact. That's a good one.
- 31:22Speaker 3: That's a good one.
- 31:23Speaker 1: And I like that though, because I think, like again,
- 31:25Speaker 1: like I'm not gonna sit here and say like, oh, like,
- 31:26Speaker 1: let's compare it in The Jones again, who clearly does
- 31:28Speaker 1: use a gun and does kill somebody, Like, oh, he's
- 31:30Speaker 1: not as good? Like whatever, Right, every movie, every character
- 31:33Speaker 1: has their own motives, their own acts, their own what
- 31:35Speaker 1: rules work in their universe? Punches Bonds, how many guys
- 31:38Speaker 1: is James Bond kill? And we're all just like cool,
- 31:40Speaker 1: yeah right women, But yeah, yeah, exactly, like you know,
- 31:44Speaker 1: everyone's metrics are different. But the fact they took the
- 31:47Speaker 1: time to like not have her and again, maybe it
- 31:50Speaker 1: was for the age rating. Maybe it was a deliberate decision.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I like it.
- 31:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, points for that one. It's not a necessary
- 31:59Speaker 3: at all. Tree Again, I don't think that's necessary. But
- 32:01Speaker 3: the fact that they made that decision is a really
- 32:04Speaker 3: cool decision. And the fact that they don't make it
- 32:06Speaker 3: like pedantic. It's not like, it's not like John voids.
- 32:11Speaker 3: It's not like John Voyd's like Laura, with great responsibility
- 32:14Speaker 3: comes great power.
- 32:17Speaker 1: No guns, I am batchmen. Yeah, but after giving this
- 32:23Speaker 1: movie and it's another little gold Star, I do need
- 32:25Speaker 1: to rip it to shreds a tiny bit, may I
- 32:28Speaker 1: please do? Okay, So the fucking Illuminati has been around
- 32:31Speaker 1: for seemingly forever. Let's just say specifically, this artifact and
- 32:36Speaker 1: planned thing has been known about since Lara's dad was killed.
- 32:40Speaker 1: We find out later that it was the villain of
- 32:41Speaker 1: the movie who killed him and stole the locket, which
- 32:44Speaker 1: means he has been dead or missing since nineteen sixty five. So,
- 32:48Speaker 1: assuming this movie takes place in the year two thousand
- 32:50Speaker 1: when it was released two thousand and one. That's at
- 32:52Speaker 1: least thirty five years. So they've had thirty five years
- 32:54Speaker 1: to find this key and are only seriously looking into
- 32:58Speaker 1: it now. A week before this whole convergence bullshit following this,
- 33:03Speaker 1: her father is fully aware the clock is going to
- 33:05Speaker 1: start ticking about a week before because he times the
- 33:08Speaker 1: letter to show up a day later. He couldn't have
- 33:10Speaker 1: sent to the letter a few weeks earlier, a month earlier,
- 33:14Speaker 1: like clearly she knows, but all this shit and isn't
- 33:16Speaker 1: like it wasn't like one of those things where it's
- 33:18Speaker 1: like I need you to see it first to realize
- 33:20Speaker 1: that it isn't mumbo jumbo before you believe my letter. No, no,
- 33:23Speaker 1: it's just she believes that it phades out because she
- 33:24Speaker 1: trusts her father, So the letter normally shows up late,
- 33:29Speaker 1: so she doesn't know what it is and by this
- 33:30Speaker 1: point it has had it stolen or lost or whatever
- 33:31Speaker 1: the bullshit could have could have happened, but did right.
- 33:34Speaker 1: But also she now has fifteen freaking hours to get
- 33:38Speaker 1: to this first temple, get back the key, and solve
- 33:41Speaker 1: this thing, and then to which she does. She does,
- 33:44Speaker 1: because of course movie. Yeah, But also they keep saying
- 33:48Speaker 1: how like there's a time limit to get this first
- 33:50Speaker 1: piece of the triangle because of the alignment, But like
- 33:54Speaker 1: that's not how alignments work. The alignments is all the
- 33:56Speaker 1: planets line up at a specific point. So is there
- 33:59Speaker 1: just an arbitrary point X number of hours or days
- 34:02Speaker 1: before the alignment. That's also like a pseudo mini alignment
- 34:05Speaker 1: that they just don't talk about, but is at.
- 34:08Speaker 3: Ye, it's part of the it's part of the puzzles
- 34:10Speaker 3: and all this other stuff. And they say it often
- 34:12Speaker 3: in this movie. I mean to to to further your point,
- 34:15Speaker 3: they say in the movie very often, you want to
- 34:18Speaker 3: wait another five thousand years before this happens.
- 34:21Speaker 1: That's a shit.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Ton of fucking time to prep some stuff. Gang, you
- 34:25Speaker 3: have so much time to get rolling on this beforehand.
- 34:28Speaker 3: But also the first temple that we talked about, it's
- 34:31Speaker 3: very imperative that they get to do what they need
- 34:34Speaker 3: to do on the exact millisecond apparently, Yeah, but even seconds.
- 34:40Speaker 3: I just want to say, like, so they're like stressing,
- 34:43Speaker 3: and they're like they're not like, oh, we should try
- 34:45Speaker 3: one method and then if your method doesn't work, we
- 34:47Speaker 3: should try another method. Uh, but no, we have to
- 34:50Speaker 3: do this one method on the fucking millisecond of planets aligning,
- 34:55Speaker 3: which take.
- 34:56Speaker 1: I don't know, you probably got a good hour. Yeah,
- 34:58Speaker 1: and the alignment is what happens to the second temple
- 35:00Speaker 1: when they get the second half of the triangle. So
- 35:02Speaker 1: it was this alignment, right, You're right. It's like that's
- 35:06Speaker 1: what I can't figure out. It's like, what, like, Okay,
- 35:09Speaker 1: we have this thing, this spatial thing that we can
- 35:11Speaker 1: physically time that we know is gonna happen in an
- 35:14Speaker 1: exact time, but then there's this other thing that is
- 35:17Speaker 1: never really mentioned but happens at an exact time also
- 35:20Speaker 1: a week early, that we need to do. Also. It's
- 35:23Speaker 1: just it's very like it's very written off in a
- 35:26Speaker 1: video gaming way that's kind of just like here's your mission,
- 35:29Speaker 1: get it done in time, right. Yeah. Like so again,
- 35:32Speaker 1: like I'm not gonna I complain about more the planning
- 35:36Speaker 1: and logistics of the Illuminati having minimum thirty five years
- 35:39Speaker 1: to do this and never thinking, well, we killed the
- 35:42Speaker 1: guy who had the key, and his daughter is now
- 35:45Speaker 1: a rich explorer in this giant mansion he built for her,
- 35:48Speaker 1: should we maybe break in and try to see if
- 35:50Speaker 1: he has the key in there somewhere. No, no, wait,
- 35:52Speaker 1: wait till she finds the key with like an hour
- 35:55Speaker 1: or two despair, then reveal it to us hopefully, and
- 35:58Speaker 1: then break in and steal it. That's the point.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Yeah, no, this movie is bad, but it's not like
- 36:06Speaker 3: objectively in all the grand scheme of movies, like, if
- 36:09Speaker 3: you have to compare this to like, I don't know,
- 36:10Speaker 3: Schindler's List, it's it's not a good movie all the.
- 36:20Speaker 2: What do you want me to compare this to the
- 36:21Speaker 2: Muppet Movie?
- 36:23Speaker 1: No, nothing compares to the umpt movie.
- 36:26Speaker 3: My top three movies for anyone who wants to know
- 36:28Speaker 3: is Schindler's List, the Muppet Movie, and Stuart Little in
- 36:32Speaker 3: that order. Oh my god, I can't I can't think.
- 36:37Speaker 3: I can't say the next thing.
- 36:38Speaker 1: It was just so.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Oh, this movie is good compared to what we've it's
- 36:43Speaker 3: it's maybe objectively the best movie we've seen of these movies. No, no, no
- 36:49Speaker 3: Pokemon the first movie. Okay, minus Pokemon, the first movie,
- 36:51Speaker 3: it's the best movie we've seen. Like looks wise, it
- 36:55Speaker 3: it Yes, it has plots or it has holes in
- 36:58Speaker 3: its plot, but.
- 36:59Speaker 1: It holds a lot that like at the end of
- 37:02Speaker 1: the day. Yes, Like the plot still holds together if
- 37:04Speaker 1: you ignored these weird little discrepancies that aren't really discussed
- 37:07Speaker 1: for the sake of like getting to the major plot. Yeah.
- 37:10Speaker 1: And I also think it's one of those things where
- 37:13Speaker 1: not having the BS extra explanations that we don't really
- 37:17Speaker 1: need to cover these things in order to get to
- 37:20Speaker 1: more tomb rating and action that is actually worth watching. Yeah,
- 37:24Speaker 1: it does kind of work in its favor.
- 37:27Speaker 3: The interesting thing about this episode is that that is
- 37:30Speaker 3: the first movie more or less in a nutshell, there's
- 37:33Speaker 3: not much else say about the second movie. Yeah, to
- 37:38Speaker 3: the point where when we did we've done a double
- 37:40Speaker 3: movie feature before with more Combat, more Combat Annihilation, and
- 37:44Speaker 3: we kind of used the segment of more Combination Annihilation
- 37:48Speaker 3: to kind of rip into it. I don't even want
- 37:49Speaker 3: to rip into this. It's so nothing. It's so boring.
- 37:54Speaker 3: If you had three notes total, I.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Believe, Yeah, like genuinely going from a movie that had
- 38:00Speaker 1: good action set pieces, a good character who like is
- 38:04Speaker 1: actually well developed, Like, I actually genuinely feel like I
- 38:07Speaker 1: understand Larakoff as a character watching this movie, from her
- 38:11Speaker 1: her upbringing to her belief system to you even said
- 38:15Speaker 1: it well, earlier. I really wanted to like just go
- 38:17Speaker 1: of go back and shine a light on that for
- 38:18Speaker 1: a second. Was the way that she has a respect
- 38:20Speaker 1: and connection to the culture she visits, like in a
- 38:25Speaker 1: way that other explorer types like. I hate to keep
- 38:28Speaker 1: going back to Adian and Jones, but I think he's
- 38:29Speaker 1: the most atypical and obvious example. Like you know, like
- 38:34Speaker 1: the scene where he's eating something a little bit weird
- 38:36Speaker 1: and like not from this northern Western culture. It's like
- 38:41Speaker 1: baffling and crazy. Whereas her she's like rolling into these
- 38:44Speaker 1: towns and she's taking part of their ceremonies and like
- 38:47Speaker 1: she's speaking to speaking their language. She knows people there,
- 38:50Speaker 1: She's made connection, she's ben roots there.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Like yeah, she is not.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Just going in raiding a tomb and leaving. She is
- 38:58Speaker 1: becoming a part of their culture. And like actually seems
- 39:00Speaker 1: like if she were to find something would not say
- 39:04Speaker 1: this belongs to the museum. She would say, this belongs
- 39:06Speaker 1: to the culture with which you were trying to steal.
- 39:08Speaker 3: It from right right one hundred percent. And I think
- 39:11Speaker 3: that continues with the second film.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Here.
- 39:13Speaker 3: One of the things I forgot to highlight about the
- 39:14Speaker 3: first film that continues in the second film is we
- 39:17Speaker 3: see principal photography in a different location and they really
- 39:22Speaker 3: highlight it. It's not the first time we've seen that.
- 39:24Speaker 3: I feel like Street Fighter definitely did it, and I
- 39:27Speaker 3: think Mortal Kombat definitely did it where it was like
- 39:30Speaker 3: evident that this was shot in a different country. But
- 39:33Speaker 3: there's this reverence and there's this focus on some really
- 39:37Speaker 3: beautiful shots of each of these locations that continues in
- 39:40Speaker 3: the second movie. That being said, the thing that really
- 39:45Speaker 3: changes for the second movie as well is we took
- 39:48Speaker 3: this techno gun Fu Matrix two thousand's vibe and it's
- 39:54Speaker 3: all clean cut washed in this second film, isn't it.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:58Speaker 3: One of the things that I highlighted that said this
- 40:02Speaker 3: movie is not really worth spending one hundred percent of
- 40:05Speaker 3: my focus on was, Yeah, Angelina Jolie has this like
- 40:08Speaker 3: fight scene. There's this goon with a sword and they
- 40:12Speaker 3: do the classic I've got a wooden weapon, You've got
- 40:15Speaker 3: a sword. The sword beats a wooden weapon. Angelina Joli
- 40:18Speaker 3: picks up in and one grand I believe is the
- 40:19Speaker 3: weapon and she kind of does like jogc like drill things.
- 40:23Speaker 2: She twirls it and sets it and the entire time.
- 40:27Speaker 1: She's able to fend him off with this.
- 40:29Speaker 2: So we go from Angelina Joel.
- 40:30Speaker 3: Lee can like run or talk her way out of
- 40:33Speaker 3: a situation or escape her way out of a situation
- 40:36Speaker 3: with aero acrobatics too. She's now so invincible that she
- 40:40Speaker 3: can do amateur JROTC drill practice moves and beat someone up.
- 40:46Speaker 3: She's invincible now, it's not there's no stakes in a
- 40:50Speaker 3: combat situation.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it almost feels like she's reached a level of
- 40:54Speaker 1: like superhuman in this one, where it's like she can
- 40:56Speaker 1: just sort of do anything she wants.
- 40:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's very that's very James Bond from one understand,
- 41:01Speaker 3: especially like some of the more cheesy maybe the Bras.
- 41:04Speaker 2: And maybe some of the Roger Mills. That's not a
- 41:07Speaker 2: guy Roger Moore, thank you.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Maybe that was like that era of like chey conversation
- 41:13Speaker 3: and stuff like that.
- 41:15Speaker 1: That was very much Roger's thing.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, okay, gotcha, gotcha. And that's fine, but it's
- 41:20Speaker 3: not interesting.
- 41:21Speaker 1: No, you know what it is? You know what, there's
- 41:23Speaker 1: a I think you're you're hitting on something really good.
- 41:25Speaker 1: I couldn't put my finger on. I think that just
- 41:27Speaker 1: sort of led me the way to go. It was
- 41:29Speaker 1: the fact that in the first film what she did
- 41:32Speaker 1: seemed believable given the skills we'd seen her learn and employ,
- 41:37Speaker 1: Like she never did something where I was like whoa,
- 41:39Speaker 1: Like even and this is gonna sound crazy. The realism
- 41:43Speaker 1: in the fight with the weird statue creatures seemed like
- 41:47Speaker 1: it seemed believable. It seemed like, yeah, like if you
- 41:51Speaker 1: put her in that scenario, the skills we saw her
- 41:54Speaker 1: employ and how she like fought them and figured it out, like, Okay,
- 41:57Speaker 1: they're made of stone, they break easily, like they're not
- 41:59Speaker 1: like super difficult. They just need to be like dodged
- 42:01Speaker 1: and parried. And even the one with the giant one
- 42:03Speaker 1: like just shooting becuse it's still it's just stone has
- 42:05Speaker 1: a face. If you destroy the stone, it's gone. So like, yes,
- 42:09Speaker 1: emtying the mag makes sense given what tools you have
- 42:11Speaker 1: at your disposal. Despite being a fantastical scenario, it was
- 42:15Speaker 1: believable versus the.
- 42:17Speaker 3: First cheeky moments like that she ends the first movie
- 42:22Speaker 3: ice skating on her boots with dogs.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Yes, but even that like that, I believe I believe
- 42:27Speaker 1: she has like water skied before or skied before, and
- 42:31Speaker 1: has had a dog sled team before and complinding those
- 42:33Speaker 1: two skills isn't ridiculous, It's it's ridiculous in vision, but
- 42:37Speaker 1: like not out of the realm of possibility for her. Right,
- 42:40Speaker 1: But then we get the first freaking major scene in
- 42:44Speaker 1: this movie second movie, where she purposely cuts herself so
- 42:48Speaker 1: she's bleeding in the water to arouse a shark that
- 42:52Speaker 1: she saw earlier, a Chekhov shark, then punches it in
- 42:55Speaker 1: the nose and rides it to the surface. Yes, like,
- 43:01Speaker 1: let's forget the fact that they've already disapproved the whole
- 43:03Speaker 1: blood with shark things like that. There's been experiments. That
- 43:05Speaker 1: isn't a real thing. It's a myth. The punching in
- 43:08Speaker 1: the nose thing. I still think that might be a
- 43:10Speaker 1: real thing, although punching underwater is really difficult, but sure,
- 43:14Speaker 1: let's say she's skilled enough to do that, right, But
- 43:16Speaker 1: that it then just runs away and lets you hold
- 43:19Speaker 1: onto it, and it decides to go up towards the
- 43:21Speaker 1: surface for a reason. It's just that moment that was like,
- 43:26Speaker 1: literally the moment I was like, oh, this is not
- 43:29Speaker 1: going to be anywhere near as good as the first movie.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Isn't. No, absolutely, and it's repeated again.
- 43:35Speaker 3: One of the few times I did tune in, there
- 43:37Speaker 3: was a huge, huge gun battle. You know, we were
- 43:40Speaker 3: talking like multitudes of henchmen with automatic rifles and she's
- 43:44Speaker 3: shooting back, and she got.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Out of it by.
- 43:47Speaker 3: Strategically sliding off of a one of those neon signs
- 43:52Speaker 3: that fell perfectly so she could slide down to her
- 43:55Speaker 3: destination get away vehicle. It's that level of ridiculous is
- 43:59Speaker 3: what we're taught about. And then on top of taking
- 44:02Speaker 3: away the stakes of action sequences, we almost I don't
- 44:09Speaker 3: want to use this term, it's kind of gross, but
- 44:11Speaker 3: it's the it's the only term I can think of.
- 44:12Speaker 3: We almost neuter her, her the bad astery of this
- 44:16Speaker 3: character by setting up with a obvious romantic partner into
- 44:21Speaker 3: our butler ten minutes into the movie, ten to fifteen
- 44:24Speaker 3: minutes into the movie. It took the will they won't
- 44:27Speaker 3: the scoundrel serious knit like, yeah, he's an excell lover,
- 44:31Speaker 3: but I got shited to do seriousness that she had
- 44:33Speaker 3: in the first movie, and it goes, well, this one's
- 44:36Speaker 3: Scottish and pretty, you know, like she like like she
- 44:39Speaker 3: has this uneasy relationship with him, but it's like you
- 44:42Speaker 3: don't need him. I don't think you're pretty capable on
- 44:45Speaker 3: your own.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Yeah, It's like I feel like if their relationship was
- 44:49Speaker 1: painted the same way the woman Daniel Craig in the
- 44:52Speaker 1: first movie was, where it's like, we have a history together,
- 44:54Speaker 1: but it's not going to get in the way of
- 44:56Speaker 1: this mission. You are simply here because I need your
- 44:58Speaker 1: expertise for and yes you'll betray me, and there'll be
- 45:01Speaker 1: a moment whatever, big wooho. But like the fact that
- 45:05Speaker 1: they like there is a moment where they do almost
- 45:07Speaker 1: sleep together, and it's only her having a realization that
- 45:09Speaker 1: stops them. Like again, it just feels like, I don't
- 45:12Speaker 1: want to make it seem like a female protagonist can
- 45:15Speaker 1: have a love interest and be like sexually attracted to somebody, right,
- 45:19Speaker 1: it doesn't take away from them. But in this instance,
- 45:22Speaker 1: it's literally undoing what we know of her from the
- 45:25Speaker 1: first movie in the way she treats.
- 45:26Speaker 3: This Perton because it's so early on, it's such a
- 45:28Speaker 3: in my opinion, it's because it's it's there like seventy
- 45:31Speaker 3: five to eighty percent of the movie. Yeah, whereas in
- 45:33Speaker 3: the last movie it was like tacked on and he
- 45:36Speaker 3: showed up every now and then I would say his
- 45:38Speaker 3: screen time was probably total thirteen fifteen minutes.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Maybe the previous guy.
- 45:43Speaker 3: Yeah this is sidekick, Yeah yeah, he was in there
- 45:46Speaker 3: a lot man and early on.
- 45:48Speaker 1: So it's like, okay, so with Flowercroft and the situation,
- 45:52Speaker 1: handsome Scottish man.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, it's it's we lose out on her
- 45:56Speaker 3: other sidekicks as well, which we liked, the nerd and
- 45:58Speaker 3: the butler. They were turned but very much in the background.
- 46:02Speaker 3: And I really like, honestly, so I'm with you. I
- 46:04Speaker 3: kind of like half paid attention by the end of
- 46:06Speaker 3: this because I was just like waiting for shit to
- 46:08Speaker 3: happen and nothing was happening.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh, And like I remember a point where like
- 46:13Speaker 1: there's a joke at the end where it's like, oh,
- 46:14Speaker 1: they're both being set up for like a marriage ritual
- 46:16Speaker 1: by this like local like indigenous culture. I'm like, when
- 46:19Speaker 1: did they get here? Why are they here? What's going on?
- 46:23Speaker 3: The tone of their relationship is very Fool's Gold, which
- 46:26Speaker 3: I know came later and is a good movie. I
- 46:29Speaker 3: remember watching the movie and thinking it was a good
- 46:31Speaker 3: rom com. That premise doesn't work in this movie. Having
- 46:35Speaker 3: fools Gold in the middle of a of this movie,
- 46:38Speaker 3: whatever it is, doesn't work because we're also talking about
- 46:41Speaker 3: Pandora's Box. We're talking about the origin of man and
- 46:46Speaker 3: a secret disease. Like Fool's Gold doesn't work in that context.
- 46:51Speaker 3: I wouldn't mind the Fools Gold with guns. I think
- 46:53Speaker 3: Fools Gold did have guns. I'm talking too much about
- 46:56Speaker 3: Fool's Gold right now.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Honestly, I don't even know the movie. I have to
- 46:58Speaker 1: look it up now.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Oh, it's Matthew McConaughey and uh I forgot our name,
- 47:04Speaker 3: but they're a classic rom com duo and they're looking
- 47:06Speaker 3: for treasure.
- 47:07Speaker 1: So it's it's this movie essentially. It's just there you go.
- 47:11Speaker 1: I wonder how it compared too bad. I didn't watch it.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Could have used this another comparison portance times. Yeah, I'm sorry,
- 47:18Speaker 1: it's gonna bother me. It's no. It's Matthew mcconaughe and
- 47:20Speaker 1: Kate Hudson. Is where you go? This movie just sort
- 47:23Speaker 1: of like it trailed off. Like really there's like the
- 47:26Speaker 1: one tomb esque rating scene in the very beginning, which
- 47:29Speaker 1: like I kind of like the idea that like this
- 47:31Speaker 1: other team shows up and like catches her off guard
- 47:34Speaker 1: and actually like puts up a fight and makes you
- 47:36Speaker 1: go like, oh, this is gonna be a challenge for her,
- 47:39Speaker 1: and then none of them were ever a challenge for her.
- 47:42Speaker 3: I'm glad you mentioned that because I did have a
- 47:43Speaker 3: note where I was like, hey, where's the tombs and.
- 47:49Speaker 1: I forgot the Beard office building, science lab under mall.
- 47:54Speaker 3: Lots of cities. We we feature a lot of cities.
- 47:57Speaker 3: So there is a tomb in the very beginning. Thank
- 47:59Speaker 3: you for letting me know that. And that's one very
- 48:02Speaker 3: very end. Oh that's barely a tune. That's a cave,
- 48:04Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying. Yeah, it's it's like when I
- 48:07Speaker 3: think of twomb on top of that, I want booby traps,
- 48:10Speaker 3: I want statues coming. There's a terra Cotta warrior scene
- 48:13Speaker 3: in that first tone. I am remembering it now, But
- 48:15Speaker 3: the Terracotta warriors don't wake up. This is a trope.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Yeah, Like again, like they set up like they're like
- 48:23Speaker 1: there are these crazy thieves, Like I'd love to see
- 48:25Speaker 1: their hideout. That's like this crazy cave full of treasures
- 48:27Speaker 1: from other stolen cultures would have been so cool. Yeah,
- 48:31Speaker 1: the Final Temple being an actual like Greek pantheon esque
- 48:35Speaker 1: temple that would you know, be fitting to Pandora's Box
- 48:39Speaker 1: being laiden with some traps and some actual like getting there.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Instead we just get these weird like the gargoyle esque things.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I think they were also statue esque, but they're like
- 48:50Speaker 1: great dive into statues or something. I was like, I
- 48:53Speaker 1: don't know what these things are.
- 48:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great note and a great change, because
- 48:56Speaker 3: that is something else that is missing from the second movie.
- 48:58Speaker 3: The first movie fell like a proto and I say
- 49:02Speaker 3: this because I don't know movies very well, but it
- 49:04Speaker 3: felt like a proto National Treasure, a proto Angels and
- 49:07Speaker 3: Demons or did da Vinci code right? These mystery they
- 49:10Speaker 3: are thrillers that are like, hey, by knowing this and this,
- 49:15Speaker 3: uh and picking up the statue of liberty, torture or
- 49:20Speaker 3: some shit, we find a secret key. Like it did
- 49:23Speaker 3: that in the first movie, which I think I expect
- 49:25Speaker 3: out of something called Tune Raider and looking at the
- 49:27Speaker 3: mysteries of ancient civilizations and so on and so forth.
- 49:30Speaker 1: This one.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Had some of that because they were figuring out, like this,
- 49:36Speaker 3: the mystery of Pandora's Box, but it I didn't catch
- 49:39Speaker 3: much of it.
- 49:40Speaker 2: It didn't have the progression.
- 49:42Speaker 3: It didn't have the progression of going from point A
- 49:43Speaker 3: to point B for this reason, to get to point
- 49:46Speaker 3: C to point D.
- 49:47Speaker 1: As much as the first movie kind of was just
- 49:49Speaker 1: like Temple one, Temple two, Temple three were done, there
- 49:53Speaker 1: was a through line of like but there was a
- 49:55Speaker 1: through line of like, Okay, we have the key, the
- 49:58Speaker 1: key requires to be used a certain the way to
- 50:00Speaker 1: solve this puzzle. And then there's like a combat scenario
- 50:02Speaker 1: like it felt video gaming, but the way you want
- 50:04Speaker 1: to be rewarding, whereas this one was just we found
- 50:08Speaker 1: ORB that is a map, we figured out how to
- 50:10Speaker 1: decipher ORB or what brings us to place. There's the
- 50:14Speaker 1: thing we want there exactly, and then there's conversation. There's
- 50:18Speaker 1: like philosophical conversations from memory on what is in Pandora's box,
- 50:23Speaker 1: But that's not what I want. Is we opened up
- 50:25Speaker 1: Pandora's box and inside is nothing because the secret all along,
- 50:30Speaker 1: you know, like this was what I was was the
- 50:31Speaker 1: friends we made along the way, as she actually kills
- 50:35Speaker 1: her one friend she made along the way, which also
- 50:38Speaker 1: was just such a cheat, like again like you know
- 50:40Speaker 1: what I will choose killing Gerard Butler over just like
- 50:42Speaker 1: you know, taking him home. Uh in this in the
- 50:45Speaker 1: context of this film, but it just felt very like,
- 50:48Speaker 1: this is what you were setting up the whole time,
- 50:50Speaker 1: is you were gonna have to betray he was going
- 50:51Speaker 1: to betray you. Eventually you have to kill him and
- 50:54Speaker 1: you do the end big woop. Like there was no
- 50:56Speaker 1: attachment to him. There was no like, oh I'm surprised. Yeah, yeah,
- 51:00Speaker 1: so we are the end of these two films. We
- 51:03Speaker 1: need to rate them. How rating the first film, the
- 51:07Speaker 1: first Tom.
- 51:08Speaker 3: Rader film, I think, uh, not knowing too much about
- 51:12Speaker 3: the video game series, I have to believe that it
- 51:14Speaker 3: is a good adaptation. She's British, she's Angelina Jolie, she
- 51:19Speaker 3: raids tombs. We got that bar. I think that's worthy
- 51:24Speaker 3: of two triangle boobies, right, Yes, yeah, I say that
- 51:32Speaker 3: in twenty twenty five, can I say that?
- 51:33Speaker 1: Yeah? I think that's yes. I think at this point
- 51:35Speaker 1: it's it's reads like meme culture. We're not like sexualizing it.
- 51:38Speaker 1: We're making fun of the fact that it was sexualized
- 51:40Speaker 1: at some point.
- 51:41Speaker 2: You're not sexualizing it, I am.
- 51:45Speaker 1: But I will side with you on this one. I
- 51:47Speaker 1: definitely think this movie checks all the boxes I wanted
- 51:50Speaker 1: from a letracraft two major film. It has action, it
- 51:53Speaker 1: has a good heroin, it has tombs being rated, it
- 51:57Speaker 1: has treasures, it has some level of misses them. It
- 52:00Speaker 1: has cool set pieces. I definitely want to give this
- 52:06Speaker 1: I can't. I think a good system here the two
- 52:08Speaker 1: polygon moves is too powerful and can't beat it. We
- 52:12Speaker 1: just do it again, which is I'm gonna give it
- 52:14Speaker 1: two more polygon moobs like that a psp ad. They
- 52:16Speaker 1: had four boobs in.
- 52:17Speaker 2: It, four boobs. So so pretty good film.
- 52:21Speaker 3: I mean, if we really had to talk about it,
- 52:23Speaker 3: the film is as good as any James Bond film
- 52:25Speaker 3: you've ever seen. But pretty good film, pretty good adaptation
- 52:28Speaker 3: for the first movie. Hey, that's a win in our
- 52:31Speaker 3: book for sure.
- 52:32Speaker 1: One hundred. That is that is a thumbs up. That
- 52:35Speaker 1: is a goal star. That is a sound effective approval.
- 52:38Speaker 1: This was this was a good video game adaptation movie.
- 52:42Speaker 1: I feel like at some point we also have to
- 52:43Speaker 1: start putting like a little note, like a little asterisk
- 52:45Speaker 1: on our list of like good rating, but also it's
- 52:48Speaker 1: a good video game movie, like not just a good movie.
- 52:50Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, now the second the second on that you
- 52:57Speaker 3: take the rains on.
- 52:57Speaker 1: That, oh the second movie is if it wasn't made
- 53:01Speaker 1: clear up until now, it's a shit show. It's bad.
- 53:03Speaker 1: It really does feel like just a cash grab of
- 53:06Speaker 1: a film, Like I understand why Angelina Joe turned down
- 53:11Speaker 1: a second a third film in the franchise after this one, right,
- 53:15Speaker 1: and it very much. It feels formulaic in the way
- 53:18Speaker 1: where it really just was like, here's the puzzle pieces
- 53:21Speaker 1: to make a generic action movie with all the things
- 53:24Speaker 1: that generic people like, unless just slap this existing character,
- 53:27Speaker 1: enfranchise onto it and do nothing with it. Yeah, no,
- 53:31Speaker 1: this this is getting a should have stayed in the tube. Yeah.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Oh that's a good one. That's a good one.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:38Speaker 3: I can't imagine that. It's very close to two rater
- 53:42Speaker 3: movies outside of generically having Laura Croft pick up a
- 53:46Speaker 3: thing as a film.
- 53:48Speaker 2: It's the most boring. We ripped a part.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Wing Commander, we hate, We really did not like Moral
- 53:55Speaker 3: Combat Annihilation, maybe because it's more so just a nothing
- 53:59Speaker 3: film that I could not have any comments on. I
- 54:01Speaker 3: think it's at the bottom tier for me of all
- 54:03Speaker 3: the movies we've seen.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Yeah, like I will go back and say like Wing
- 54:07Speaker 1: Commander as much as we ripped into it. That is
- 54:09Speaker 1: a movie I would put on for my friends while
- 54:11Speaker 1: getting drunk because it's funny.
- 54:13Speaker 3: How bad it is? Yeah right, this is nothing. This
- 54:16Speaker 3: would lose you friends, people would not come back.
- 54:20Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a nothing burger of This is the
- 54:22Speaker 1: plain white, untoasted bread of a film.
- 54:26Speaker 3: And for that reason, I'm rating this film a John
- 54:28Speaker 3: Voight out of Angelina Jolie. It's a John Voight. Take
- 54:37Speaker 3: that way.
- 54:37Speaker 1: You will welcome back everyone to the mini game segment
- 54:48Speaker 1: of press play. Of course, Jason and I can't play
- 54:51Speaker 1: games on our own, although we no, wait, we do.
- 54:54Speaker 1: We do a lot of gaming on our own. What
- 54:55Speaker 1: am I talking about? Yeah, but it's not nearly as fun.
- 54:58Speaker 1: Although you can check out a ocasional random live streams.
- 55:01Speaker 1: We're gonna start trying to do once in a while
- 55:02Speaker 1: for these things for fun. Sometimes when we have time
- 55:04Speaker 1: and we figure out how streaming works properly. There's a
- 55:07Speaker 1: there is a there is like an hour long Pokemon
- 55:10Speaker 1: one somewhere on the Gatelyapers YouTube channel from our testing
- 55:13Speaker 1: that records.
- 55:14Speaker 2: I didn't know that recorded that recorded and.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Uploaded and showed my feed the next day, and I
- 55:18Speaker 1: was like, oh shit, Anyways, enough about us, We're bored
- 55:20Speaker 1: you hear us all the damn time. I want to
- 55:22Speaker 1: introduce some guests. So from this very feed, a woman
- 55:26Speaker 1: of stem comedy and podcasting to extend an acronym to STEMP.
- 55:31Speaker 1: It's Audre Stevenson.
- 55:33Speaker 6: Hello, I love this new acronym. I will be making
- 55:37Speaker 6: T shirts which is just STEMP. Yes, it's just just
- 55:42Speaker 6: the old T shirts. There aren't old T shirts. And
- 55:47Speaker 6: I'll just write on the additional letters, just them on.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Like literally the scotch tape and sharpie type thing.
- 55:53Speaker 7: Yes, DIY culture is alive and.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Well, we're very aware of it. That was a great
- 55:58Speaker 1: episode of Pandemonium. Speaking of Pandemonium, all of y'all should
- 56:02Speaker 1: hopefully have just heard the amazing Live Star Wars episode,
- 56:05Speaker 1: which means you already know and love and if you
- 56:08Speaker 1: don't love him, apparently all is gonna come chase you down.
- 56:10Speaker 6: Yes.
- 56:10Speaker 1: Our second guest an improv comic by the name of
- 56:14Speaker 1: Julia boise I.
- 56:16Speaker 7: I'm Julia.
- 56:18Speaker 1: Welcome to the show, Julia, Thank.
- 56:20Speaker 7: You, Drew. I'm excited to be here.
- 56:24Speaker 4: I am already loving this little podcasting family that you
- 56:29Speaker 4: all have.
- 56:30Speaker 7: It's really fun.
- 56:31Speaker 1: I love it.
- 56:31Speaker 7: Too, and that warms my heart.
- 56:33Speaker 1: Oh they they they sucked me into this family so quick,
- 56:36Speaker 1: and I am never leaving that.
- 56:39Speaker 7: We did that, we did. We won't let you. We
- 56:43Speaker 7: would if you wanted to, we would let you.
- 56:46Speaker 1: We would let you, but we would really guilt you
- 56:48Speaker 1: a little bit like.
- 56:51Speaker 7: We would we would feel sad.
- 56:53Speaker 3: Me and Drew are in a Google doc together and
- 56:56Speaker 3: he's passive, aggressively prompting me.
- 56:59Speaker 1: I was just reminding you, letting you know where I
- 57:02Speaker 1: was in the feed, so you didn't know where it
- 57:03Speaker 1: was wondering.
- 57:04Speaker 3: I just want you guys to know that I'm stone
- 57:06Speaker 3: cold sober. It's just really fucking early for me, and
- 57:09Speaker 3: I haven't had coffee.
- 57:10Speaker 7: Oh here, you're so sorry.
- 57:15Speaker 2: I think you get my fucking life together. Hold on, boys, are.
- 57:22Speaker 7: You also a little hungover?
- 57:25Speaker 3: I've never really been hung over my life. But I
- 57:27Speaker 3: did stay up later, like I stayed up till like
- 57:29Speaker 3: two last night, just off of the energy from yesterday.
- 57:34Speaker 2: I suppose I don't.
- 57:35Speaker 7: Know sugar metabolizes.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. I don't know. And I
- 57:40Speaker 2: need to go to the gym and all this other stuff.
- 57:42Speaker 7: You know, who does go to the gym Laura Craft.
- 57:46Speaker 6: Laura, she's always at the freaking.
- 57:50Speaker 3: Gym mask to keep all that through life for that
- 57:54Speaker 3: to makes sense.
- 57:55Speaker 1: And that's no, that is peak podcasting.
- 57:59Speaker 5: Me.
- 58:00Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do that. But now we're gonna keep
- 58:02Speaker 1: it because of one little joke.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Hold on, we're taking it from the top. I cannot
- 58:07Speaker 2: do that.
- 58:07Speaker 7: Okay, we can start from the top. I'll just make
- 58:10Speaker 7: the same joke later.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Audre Julian, thank you so much for coming on in.
- 58:16Speaker 4: Uh.
- 58:17Speaker 3: Yeah, we're super stoked to do some games with you guys.
- 58:20Speaker 3: I'm also very appreciative that you guys are doing this
- 58:22Speaker 3: episode because in the Fandoms cast, we have a bunch
- 58:26Speaker 3: of volunteers who want to be part of certain video games.
- 58:29Speaker 3: It's only ever dudes whoever chat and no dude wanted
- 58:32Speaker 3: to be part of this episode. So I'm so appreciative
- 58:35Speaker 3: that you guys are here.
- 58:37Speaker 7: And I got opinions.
- 58:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it feels really right that you guys are here.
- 58:43Speaker 3: Can I ask though, because it's a big ass like,
- 58:45Speaker 3: are you guys familiar with Flahercraft obviously like one of
- 58:48Speaker 3: the most iconic female video game characters ever, movie wise
- 58:53Speaker 3: or video game wise, are you guys familiar.
- 58:55Speaker 6: I am a bit familiar, just tangentially. I watched the
- 58:59Speaker 6: movies The Angelina Jolie once. I watched those when they
- 59:04Speaker 6: came out, and then later after they came out, I
- 59:07Speaker 6: watched them again because I was like, hell, yes, they
- 59:10Speaker 6: were something my family did not want me watching. I
- 59:13Speaker 6: thought it was because of the supernatural elements. I think
- 59:16Speaker 6: they secretly just knew I was bisexual and wanted he
- 59:20Speaker 6: did not watch the movies. But here we are today,
- 59:27Speaker 6: can't stop you can't stop me.
- 59:29Speaker 1: They were worried they would worry the triangular boobs would
- 59:31Speaker 1: get to you, Audre, and.
- 59:32Speaker 6: Clearly, yeah, it clearly did. I got a pack of
- 59:36Speaker 6: like white tank tops. Obviously the styles iconic.
- 59:42Speaker 7: Oh you have enough hair.
- 59:43Speaker 4: That you could have done the really intense like uh
- 59:47Speaker 4: huh the braid.
- 59:50Speaker 7: Okay, now I know my Halloween costume.
- 59:52Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I think as playing Laircroft totally
- 59:55Speaker 1: would work.
- 59:56Speaker 2: Audri cossplaying Laircraft, Matt cosplaying Nathan Drake. Very cute, honestly.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Very couples costume, honestly cute, but you'd.
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: Have to do British accent. Does that feel comfortable for you?
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: It will feel comfortable for me. It won't feel comfortable
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: for anyone who.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Has I would have to do not a British accent,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: just like in the movies when they randomly saw everyone's
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: accents for no reason.
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: Yes, it's all, it's all coming together.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: It's only June, Julie. Are you familiar with Tom Raider?
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: So?
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: I think I even mentioned it in the Star Wars thing.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: I only know. I didn't even know it was based
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: on a video game when I saw the movies, which
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: I saw and I was like, oh, action movie. And
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: then after I realized I was bisexual, I saw them
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: and I was like, oh, young Angelina Julie. So I've
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: seen them, but not from the standpoint of like this
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: is based off video game.
- 1:00:56Speaker 7: Uh so so you're familiar with the movie?
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Though I think it's something I can think that we've
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: touched on in this podcast before, is the importance of
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: how like how these are such video game ass movies,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: but like sometimes they do break that mold and can
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: still just be good movies that people enjoy regardless of
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: whether or not they know of or play the games.
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: Good movie is a bit of a stretch.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: True good movies. Other movies.
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: Oh certainly. Oh yeah, the other other video game movies. Yeah, No,
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: in the realm of within the genre. Yeah, it's a
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: standout in the genre.
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: Yeah, it is a standout in the genre. That's true.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: So I have invited you here under some false pretenses.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: This isn't just a fun chat about the movie. I
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: am going to force you to play a little bit
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: of a game. Sort of. No, and the game is
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Jason and I will be taking the role of video
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: game tycoons. And after a scrooge esque visit from Three
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Pac Ghosts last night, we've both now seen the error
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: of our ways. Making video games just for boys is bad.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: So we've elected to solve this by asking a pair
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: of nulgeable women, too, woman, explain to us how to
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: fix video games.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: M M.
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: I don't think I ever got to tell you my
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: experience with video games as someone whose mom plays that
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: it led to violence in real life. Or I don't know,
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: maybe she just didn't want me to be less feminine.
- 1:02:26Speaker 7: It could be either.
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: So I had a GameCube later than most and the
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: two games I had were, uh, some Mario Kart, yeah
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: that's normal, and Shrek too.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: The video game tie ins the movie video game tians
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: are so good.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: And I feel like the Shrek ones weirdly have like
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: a good following like of the video game ti in
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: movies are the ones people keep telling me like, oh no,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: they're actually like decent games for the most part.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: Well as someone with like no other nothing else all
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: from it felt good.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: I liked it.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: I almost want a series now of like getting Julia
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: through the history of video games to see if we
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: can ever top Shrek two is a game? And how
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: long it?
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: Well?
- 1:03:11Speaker 7: Is it the memory of Shrek two? Or like would
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: you have me play Shrek two now?
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: Is like the actual like that would be the finale
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: of the series. We'll make a mini series out of
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: this and that'll be a finale. We'll do that. We'll
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: put them on the back order for one day.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Real, Yeah, I have.
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: I mean I've played video games as an adult, like
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: indie games and stuff. My boyfriend got me into them,
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: so I've been a little bit tainted.
- 1:03:30Speaker 6: But you know, I was so pure, And I will
- 1:03:34Speaker 6: say we had a parallel situation because I grew up
- 1:03:38Speaker 6: we had a Sega genesis, and so I grew up
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: the big three in my household was Bubbsy, which was.
- 1:03:50Speaker 7: A sonic ripoff.
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: The other one was road Rash Too, which was like
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: a pixely little like racing game on motorcycles and you
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: could have different weapons and like attack people on the road.
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: And then the third one, I think was just called
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: Exodus and it was just your Moses and it was
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: like the story of Exodus and you had to you
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: had to get the people out of Egypt.
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: Is that parents let you have it? Yeah, the Exodus.
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: Because there was a religious game and the loading screens
- 1:04:24Speaker 6: were Bible versus and so that was that was the
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: extent of gaming in my youth. So we have a
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: parallel we have a parallel situation.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think that's I think that's unfortunately echoed
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: with a lot of people. And so my question for
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: you guys, and I think you guys are experts in
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: this field, is in today's modern world, how would we
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: make gaming more inclusive or more inviting.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: To two other folks.
- 1:04:54Speaker 6: I think my opinion on this is I do really
- 1:04:59Speaker 6: enjoy gaming now, and I just try to be as
- 1:05:03Speaker 6: open and boisterous about it as possible because I think
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: like as a community, gaming has not learned how to
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: interact with anyone who is female presenting or who like
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: would be taken in that regard, and it makes it
- 1:05:24Speaker 6: less of a place that people want to be because
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: they haven't been forced to know how to deal with
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: someone who presents as a woman. So my advice is
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: for people in gaming to.
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: I don't know, meet women. Step one. Interesting.
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: I let that you took it because I was thinking
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: like game development, and I was going to say, more
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: realistic titties, Oh, but yours makes way more sense in
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: terms of like the actual like probably, no.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: No, no, let's go with this thought process. Tell me this.
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: I will say this is a comedy podcast, and I
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: went into a very non comedy space, and so I
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: just thank you.
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: I don't I don't think it's not funny to say,
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: meet real women.
- 1:06:11Speaker 7: I think that's very funny.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I but like, weirdly, like I was, I was also
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: going to go the joke out there and response to
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Julian and be like, have you seen modern video games
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: like they have? But you're right, they're not realistic. They're
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: like bombastically cartoony tits.
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: But the physics is, honestly where it is pushing more
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: women in stem That's what we need to perfect that
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: physics as well.
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: Enough polygons for tits so so more realistic tits and
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: meet some women.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: I think the two go together quite well in a
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: lot of worlds. Yes, but hey, if that's what's gonna
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: get women into gaming, and yet gaming spaces more friendly
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: to women, I'm on board with that. I'm not gonna
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: argue that one.
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: Yeah, that's that's my opinion.
- 1:07:00Speaker 6: I just think that, like, cause there are women involved
- 1:07:02Speaker 6: in gaming, so many, so so many. Like there were
- 1:07:08Speaker 6: some things in Last of Us where they're like, this
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: is horrific, like this, this part of this game is
- 1:07:12Speaker 6: so intense, like you're gonna get rid of women in
- 1:07:15Speaker 6: this space. And it was like a woman wrote that part.
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: That was her idea, and she wrote it, and then
- 1:07:24Speaker 6: like another woman did the mo cap and did the
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: voice acting like it.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Like this this was this was entirely crafted by women.
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: Like yeah, the whole part that you think is going
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: to be too intense and you're not gonna have women
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: in the space.
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: That's what they want in the space.
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: They want all the same range of gaming, all the
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: same range of experiences, almost as though they have equal humanity.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: I think CEO should have heard a long time ago. Yep.
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: I think that speaks to something as because to Julia's point,
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: as a man, I've never demanded better dick physics out
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: of my game, you know, Like that's not something that
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: I'm climbing at the bit for. And that's probably because
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: I've been catered to in some way, shape or form.
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: Yeah, someone that I was friends with in my youth,
- 1:08:17Speaker 6: they had like the memory cards for their PlayStation, and
- 1:08:19Speaker 6: they used to have characters on them, and one of
- 1:08:22Speaker 6: them was just like the top half of tomb Raider
- 1:08:25Speaker 6: and like the sculpted head and tits and like down
- 1:08:29Speaker 6: to the waist. And I think a good idea, let's
- 1:08:32Speaker 6: bring back memory cards and just have it be upside down.
- 1:08:36Speaker 7: Just have a man, it's just.
- 1:08:38Speaker 6: Just a memory Drake, Nathan Drake upside down.
- 1:08:45Speaker 7: Yeah, that's not gonna fix anything, guys, it's.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: Not gonna do. People to deal with USBs now where
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: it's like the back end of a dog type thing
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: in the USB. Yeah, like that for the next generation
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: of memory cards. Just like Nathan Drake's like acid legs
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: hanging down from the front of the console, like articulated legs,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: so they dangle properly.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: The legs where gateleapers have we gone where we're like,
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: oh dude, bring back the Atari, but have just a
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: deal though for the joystick.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Let me suck on my joystick while playing. That's inclusive.
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: That's you education.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: That is someone's fetish out there. I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: Yep, it already exists. We didn't invent that.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Oh I think after that game res included a literally
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: a little black square you plugged into the second controller
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: port that just vibrated in tune with the music and
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: was just called the res vibrator.
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: What.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Oh that's a real thing.
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: Not how you get women into gaming.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: No, no it is not. Although I have her choice,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: good for them.
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like people have to already be gaming
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: to know about that.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, a little on the niche side.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: Yeah I did not know.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: Well, speaking of already gaming, my turn to ask a question.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: Is there a game from your childhood that either you
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: played or knew about that you would like to see
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: like Redone today in a way that wouldn't be so
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: boys clubby If I could use.
- 1:10:11Speaker 7: The term your tech ceo tech CEOs.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: That we are, Yes, that's the role we were playing today.
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: I have a pitch for you today. I would like
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: to pitch road Rash three.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Wait wait, wait the one you played with road Rash two. Yes,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: oh there was a one way.
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: There was there was a one Come on, are you
- 1:10:32Speaker 6: even into video gaming if you don't know road Rash one,
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: two and now three? In road Rash two there was
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: one girl's bike and it was the pink bike obviously,
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: And now I I want to make this any color
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: bicycle can be for anyone.
- 1:10:54Speaker 7: That's what I want.
- 1:10:55Speaker 6: But I do want the weapons to be even more
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: violent than before.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: So gender neutral bikes, but more aggressive weaponry.
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: Yes, And that's how I think we're gonna fix video gaming.
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: I want to keep the types of things where you
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: could like use a chain to like pull someone off
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: of their bicycle, but I also want you to be
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: able to throw their mother's words at them.
- 1:11:20Speaker 7: That's what I see, and I think that's gonna if.
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: I think that's gonna make everybody feel more like equally attacked.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: Physical attack and mental.
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: Attacks, emotional psychological warfare.
- 1:11:36Speaker 6: That's what I think is going to make. I think
- 1:11:38Speaker 6: this is going to help level the playing field. Is
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: if we start using both physical and psychological damage because
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: I think that that's something that everyone across the spectrum
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: can relate to that, and so I think that if
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: that removed people from their bikes in this racing game,
- 1:11:57Speaker 6: I think that's I don't remember what the is that
- 1:12:01Speaker 6: I'm trying to get more women into gaming.
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: I forgot.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, you're making the game more inclusive. You're
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: making even the combat more inclusive.
- 1:12:08Speaker 6: I mean the prompt is whatever you want at this yes,
- 1:12:12Speaker 6: and so I think that that's gonna make gaming less
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: of a boys club.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: M I just I need to paint the mental image
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: I got in my mind when you describe this, I'm assuming,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: for some reason my head, every game's like Mario Karts.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: You're going through item boxes and the little roulette is
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: going and it's like Spiked Club Missile Launcher. Mom's guilty
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: by not coming to Christmas that one year, three years ago.
- 1:12:34Speaker 6: Mm hmm, and you just spin. It is still pixel art.
- 1:12:38Speaker 6: The it is the retro cute art style like it
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: was at the time of Road Rash too. It was
- 1:12:48Speaker 6: just the art style. But now it's gonna be retro,
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: but it's going to be in that same style. It's
- 1:12:53Speaker 6: gonna look like Stardu Valley, the Racing the violent racing game.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: I feel like throwing Starduo Valley on anything. It's just
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: like every company's attempt to bring women to gaming at
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: this point. Yes, yes, oh I love this her. Road
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: Rash three. Unfortunately road Rash three exists, so does road
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: Rash three D. Road Rash sixty four. Road Rash jail
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Break apparently was the last one. Yeah, that one was
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: from the year two thousand, in twenty five years, because
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: we've had a road Rash game, so bring it back.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: So assuming we can't use road Rash three, do you
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: have a subtitle? You give this one.
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: Instead road Rash four?
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: You know what that works? That works so well.
- 1:13:36Speaker 7: Yeah, they don't have that.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: They didn't have that.
- 1:13:41Speaker 7: Trying to come up with a pun. It wasn't coming
- 1:13:44Speaker 7: to me.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Oh no, I like that. I think even the video
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: game meenis of just like putting a four on a game.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: It hasn't been out in like thirty years. We were like, yes, one.
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: It's like when I found out that the Witcher game
- 1:13:54Speaker 6: that I had been playing was the third one.
- 1:13:57Speaker 7: I was like, oh, this is the third one, gotcha.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: And look at that, we're getting a fourth one with
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: a female protagonist that the Internet for some reason can't
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: stand because she's not perfectly hot. Fuck them, it's idiots.
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: Fuck em. I'm gonna play a day one.
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: That trailer made me cry, Fuck them, Fuck the haters.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Yeah, so, Julia, I'm curious, where are we going with
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: year round of this one?
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: Yes, you played a strip in the strip, and I'm
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: thinking one if there's like a fun mode where you
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: could play Dragon and just like stomp over everything, and
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: then that's the fun part of being Dragon.
- 1:14:39Speaker 7: Oh okay, I genuinely love this.
- 1:14:43Speaker 6: I don't know if if we're supposed to be competing
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: against each other, we're not, because.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: Your competition is the male species.
- 1:14:52Speaker 7: Unfortunately, as it always is. It's good to be in
- 1:14:55Speaker 7: familiar territory.
- 1:14:56Speaker 6: I love this because I think that the root one
- 1:14:59Speaker 6: thing that a lot of video games do is they'll
- 1:15:01Speaker 6: just be like, Okay, we'll do the like the secondary
- 1:15:06Speaker 6: character that's a woman. We'll make it the love interest
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: of the story to be like the main character. No,
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: we're doing Dragon. Dragon. Big Dragon is the main character
- 1:15:16Speaker 6: of this story. There's nothing about it that's gonna be
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: like the We're not gonna question the strength of Dragon
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: in any regard.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: I love this because I get I was very like
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: I was ready for you to just say, like you
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: plays Fiota like that seems like that would be the easy,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: stupid CEO answer. But no, no, no, you one uped us.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: I like this.
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: I want Dragon.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: I mean I feel like that was the first movie
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: slash Space where I felt like, oh, those short kings
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: are hot, Like as a very tall adolescent, that was
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: good for me to know.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: Now I just need to ask them clarification. We're ready
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: to shrek Terrytyer when you say short kings are hot
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: Donkey Okay, So I was gonna say the movie has
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: a short king in the movie. Oh I was being literal.
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: No, I was talking about the relationship between Donkey and Dragon,
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: and I love yeah. So yeah, just like you know
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: that that kind of dynamic can work.
- 1:16:18Speaker 6: And the Fiona story is very much so I'm going
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: to it has other elements, but there is the like
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: rescued princess element of it. Dragon had her own full
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: life and she continues to have her own full life
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: where she has goals and aims as well, and so
- 1:16:37Speaker 6: it's a better it's also a better character arc.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: So we get the untold story of this badass bitch
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: queen boss girl, the Dragon and her real life that
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: happens while we're busy following Trek on his adventures.
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: Yes, turns out there was a more interesting story going
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: on time. Yeah.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: I also I almost want to be like pedantic and say,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: like all the Shrek parts of the game were like
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: super complicated and unfund and then you're rewarded with a
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: really fun just like have a great time level with
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: the Dragon.
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: Yeah. Also, it's sexy armor proof.
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: It's like a character where you can't do over sexualized armor.
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: And honestly, I'm not opposed to sexy armor. I was
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: gonna say, I do think it's great, but I think
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: that there's some people who like will prioritize it.
- 1:17:31Speaker 7: And this is really about the narrative of Dragon.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: I'll make some fan ar I'll put some sexy armor
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: on that dragon that doesn't need armor to begin with.
- 1:17:38Speaker 7: I'll do it, Okay.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: That is always one of those things in like the
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: fandom spaces where it's like, let me take this character
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: that traditionally doesn't wear clothing and put close sexy clothing
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: on them to make them more sexy. It's like they're naked.
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: Yeah, they're already sexy.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: That's the sexiest thing you can wear it self.
- 1:17:58Speaker 6: It makes it would I feel armor on Dragon would
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: make her like less suitable in combat because it's like,
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: I'm not used to wearing clothes. I'm already armored, and
- 1:18:11Speaker 6: so this isn't adding more armor to me, it's just
- 1:18:14Speaker 6: reducing my physical capability in the space.
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: Dragon was evolved to be warrior. Huh, So like she's good,
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: she's good.
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: It's honestly, if she wore armor, it would only be
- 1:18:29Speaker 6: for somebody else so that they felt a certain way,
- 1:18:32Speaker 6: and so if she wears armor, it would have to
- 1:18:35Speaker 6: be for her.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: I understand this. I made the r already and I apologize.
- 1:18:40Speaker 7: They see we need.
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: That's something else that we need in the gaming space
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: is people would be more comfortable saying when they've changed
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: their mind or just I'm sorry, yeah, sorry, like and
- 1:18:54Speaker 6: that's fine, that's good.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: Are going back to your your your road rash for
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: that's how you like avoid getting hit by certain weapons
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: you have an i'm sorry equipment, yes, just.
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: And it's just always a good thing.
- 1:19:09Speaker 6: It's like, hey, I'm sorry I did hurt you, and
- 1:19:12Speaker 6: I'm sorry.
- 1:19:14Speaker 7: It stops them dead in their tracks and you just
- 1:19:15Speaker 7: keep going.
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: Yeah. Wow, I feel so free now now my corporate
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: evil ceo mind is the crossover potential if you can
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: race as dragon.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Oh road was always in the Trek universe. It turns
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: out and nobody knew.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: Yes, oh, where's Moses in this?
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: I think Donkey is helping get people through.
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: Yeah, the rede Yeah, through the wilderness, and it's through
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: the wilderness.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Yea, the Red Sea. Yes, yes, oh my god, Well
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: the two of you, thank you for helping enlighten gaming.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: I feel like going forward, any tech ceo here's this
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: is gonna know. They need to change their ways hopefully
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: and you will be the guiding light that sends them
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: into a new writer.
- 1:20:05Speaker 7: Future meet women do jokes.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Wait, look at the art that I drew.
- 1:20:14Speaker 7: Wait is that a bikini?
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Stop?
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: Hold on, yeah, this is only for the patrons.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: As long as there's equal opportunity sexy armor, go for it.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: But like, uh huh, yeah, yeah, that's one of those jokes.
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: I'd love to see.
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: You have to draw Donkey in a speedo cod piece.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Give me nine seconds, good banana hammock on that Donkey
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: I also love the idea now of like I want
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: to see a game do that one day where they
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: have like a DLC sexy armor, but when you equip it,
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: one character at autocips to all of your characters. So like, yes,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: if you if you want to see the chicken the
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: nice bikini, you've also got to see the guy in

- 1:21:00Speaker 1: Yeah, or there's probably some people out there. I can't
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: think of any specifically. He'd be totally fine with that
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: on all their characters.
- 1:21:06Speaker 7: I can't imagine. Yeah, I can't be.
