- 0:28Did you all end up with George Jones' bus?
- 0:33This is angelcarsusa.org.
- 0:35So Okay.
- 0:35Bus.
- 0:36So Michael Jan is the founder.
- 0:37He's the owner of the bus.
- 0:38He's had it for a few years.
- 0:40We were fortunate enough that needed some it needs some service Yeah.
- 0:44On the mechanical parts.
- 0:45And I get to be the guy to kinda be the liaison in that process.
- 0:50Right?
- 0:50So yeah.
- 0:51Go ahead.
- 0:51Walk through and take a look, man.
- 0:52I'm gonna follow you with one of the cameras here and let you get a live reaction.
- 0:59Yeah.
- 1:00So this is a 1995.
- 1:01So obviously at the end of George's career, right, or towards the towards the back end, I
- 1:06would say.
- 1:06The man kept playing until he done.
- 1:09They're really built to be his personal space on the road and just a custom one of one.
- 1:17There's not another one on the planet like this as you can tell.
- 1:22Yeah.
- 1:23Back in the back in the nineties, Tanya Tucker had me on a bus.
- 1:29It was a loner.
- 1:30She hated it.
- 1:31She's like, this is not mine.
- 1:33Put Right.
- 1:33In the mess.
- 1:34This thing is terrible.
- 1:35Right.
- 1:35This is, this is probably what she wanted, what she was used to.
- 1:43Well, welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 1:46I'm your host Bubba Starts, and we're here for our special series on the bus.
- 1:50With me today is Mike Custer.
- 1:51Mike, welcome to the show, man.
- 1:53Thanks a lot.
- 1:53Thanks for
- 1:54having me.
- 1:54Yeah.
- 1:54This is amazing.
- 1:56This is awesome.
- 1:56Pretty awesome.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:57I I couldn't agree more.
- 2:00It's been an awesome, awesome weekend here at the Josie's as well hanging out at the Grand
- 2:05Ole Opry.
- 2:06We got to meet on the red carpet.
- 2:07Yeah.
- 2:07Yeah.
- 2:08You picked up a couple of nominations this year.
- 2:10Yeah.
- 2:10Yeah.
- 2:11Best country male artist, I think is what it was called, and male country song of the year.
- 2:16Didn't win, but Right. It
- 2:18It was my first time.
- 2:19Yeah.
- 2:19You know, when when I heard how many nominations there were and how many
- 2:22submissions, over 86,000 submissions, right, just to get a nomination is a huge deal.
- 2:27Yeah.
- 2:27Yeah.
- 2:27To be a winner is obviously an amazing accomplishment and a feat, but just to be
- 2:32nominated is something.
- 2:33And that's
- 2:34what I trying to tell, you know, a good friend of mine, Tyler Herwig, as well as, look, buddy.
- 2:37I know you're disappointed, but still a pretty big deal.
- 2:40Oh, yeah.
- 2:40Yeah.
- 2:41Pretty huge deal.
- 2:41And to pick I mean, I think he had five nominations.
- 2:44Yeah.
- 2:44That means something.
- 2:45Right.
- 2:45So, Mike, where are you from?
- 2:46I am from Frederick, Maryland.
- 2:48There you go.
- 2:48Not a lot of cowboys in Maryland, I imagine.
- 2:50Well, we're a lot of horses, but not a lot of cowboys.
- 2:54A lot of race horses.
- 2:55Right.
- 2:56But, yeah, my my dad and I grew up cutting horses and Incredible.
- 3:02Yeah.
- 3:02So we would break
- 3:03horses.
- 3:03Race horsing scene?
- 3:05Yeah.
- 3:05No.
- 3:06We were not race horses.
- 3:07We were Right.
- 3:07We were cutting horses and rodeo stuff.
- 3:09So we were on the outliers, but we would green break horses for people.
- 3:12So there's a lot of people that have pleasure horses in Maryland.
- 3:15And so we would break them.
- 3:17Yeah.
- 3:17I don't think a lot of people would think of Maryland as horse country.
- 3:21Yeah.
- 3:21We actually have the second largest population of horses in The US.
- 3:25Incredible.
- 3:25Yeah.
- 3:25Second to who?
- 3:26Kentucky, of course.
- 3:27Of course.
- 3:28Of course.
- 3:29Yeah.
- 3:29So we have Pimlico Race Course and Okay.
- 3:33Yeah.
- 3:33I'm not a big race horse.
- 3:34Obviously, no big derby.
- 3:36Crown races.
- 3:37Yeah.
- 3:37We are we are the second of the triple crown.
- 3:39Yeah.
- 3:39Incredible.
- 3:41What a so obviously, that kinda raises you in country music most of your life, I would
- 3:45imagine.
- 3:45Yeah.
- 3:46Country folk.
- 3:47Yep.
- 3:47I grew up cleaning stalls and listening to country music on the radio in the barn.
- 3:54Good times, man.
- 3:55Good times.
- 3:56So when did you start playing music?
- 3:58Oh, when I was when I was a real little kid, my dad had a friend who had a band called Benny
- 4:04Dean and the Black Jacks.
- 4:06And he played at my dad's best friend's wedding, and I I must have been three, maybe
- 4:11four, but I just remember watching this fiddle player up there and Benny Dean singing.
- 4:16And I said, that's what I wanna do.
- 4:17I wanna I wanna play the fiddle and sing.
- 4:20So as soon as I could, I went to school and said, I wanna learn to play the fiddle.
- 4:25And they said, well, we'll teach you to play the violin.
- 4:29So that's when I started.
- 4:30And, of course, I started singing in the choir at church, like so many people do.
- 4:34So Yeah.
- 4:35My parents drug me to choir rehearsals and practices practices and and listened to me
- 4:40squeaking away on the violin.
- 4:43And
- 4:43A really great instrument when done right, but I imagine those early years, right, are hard
- 4:49for any parent to kinda get through.
- 4:51But, obviously, they saw some potential and saw your passion for it at an early age.
- 4:56Yeah.
- 4:56Yeah.
- 4:56And I started writing music when I was six or seven.
- 5:00So it was just in you?
- 5:01Yeah.
- 5:02It
- 5:02was in you.
- 5:02Incredible.
- 5:04Yeah.
- 5:04So
- 5:04And now here we are just a few short years
- 5:06now.
- 5:06Right.
- 5:06Just a few years later.
- 5:08Yeah.
- 5:08When I was when I was 18, I was in a band, and then my now wife, who was my girlfriend at the
- 5:13time, we decided we're not going to go to Nashville because everybody we met and knew
- 5:19that came down here was getting divorced.
- 5:20They never saw their kids.
- 5:22It was just I said, wanna be with you and be with the kids.
- 5:25So I stayed at home and made a life in Frederick, Maryland.
- 5:29And when the pandemic hit, my kids were listening to the music because I was sitting at
- 5:35home just playing music all the time.
- 5:36I said, why don't you release any of this?
- 5:38This is really good.
- 5:39So
- 5:40Very cool.
- 5:41I did.
- 5:41Shout out to the kids for giving you a push.
- 5:43That's incredible.
- 5:44My kids are great.
- 5:45They're now they're 23 and 21.
- 5:47And
- 5:48Right.
- 5:48So out of the house now, you may be probably have a little more time
- 5:51on your hands.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:52Well,
- 5:52at least they
- 5:53can feed themselves.
- 5:54Right?
- 5:54Right.
- 5:55Right.
- 5:55Probably still coaching them into doing their own laundry.
- 5:57But
- 5:58Yes.
- 6:00No.
- 6:00They're great.
- 6:01And they they come to a lot of shows and
- 6:03Incredible.
- 6:04Listen
- 6:05to my music and give me feedback.
- 6:06To you to have the kids there with you
- 6:08and really
- 6:09pushing you along and and providing that motivation to not just, you know, do it, but to
- 6:13keep doing it.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:15And I I had really put all that music behind me for years.
- 6:18And when they were pushing me, I'd found a it was COVID, so I was going through all this
- 6:23crap.
- 6:24I couldn't do anything else.
- 6:24So I found a a little box that I had that was locked, and I couldn't believe.
- 6:30I remember the combination.
- 6:31I opened it up, and it was full of letters that my wife and I had sent to each other when we
- 6:34were in high school.
- 6:35Know?
- 6:36Really?
- 6:36Passing notes.
- 6:37And there was one in there I opened up and read, and it said, I know you're gonna make it
- 6:42in Nashville, and you're gonna take me on tour with you when you go.
- 6:45And I said, I think she's talking to me thirty years later.
- 6:49Right.
- 6:50Oh, what an incredible story.
- 6:51Yeah.
- 6:51It's a song right there.
- 6:53Right.
- 6:53Right.
- 6:53Yeah.
- 6:54And now here we sit on a a bus that spent plenty of time on the road, obviously, touring
- 7:01around with George.
- 7:02And Yeah.
- 7:03You know, you had the experience, not just the red carpet, but the whole show and hearing your
- 7:08name called at the Grand Ole Opry.
- 7:10Yeah.
- 7:11Yeah.
- 7:11Tell us a little bit about, you know, your your experience here because I was just covering it.
- 7:15I wasn't a nominee or anything.
- 7:16So a little bit different experience for me.
- 7:18Just as awesome.
- 7:19Right?
- 7:19Right.
- 7:20In every single way, we worked our tails off on that red
- 7:23carpet.
- 7:23Yeah.
- 7:23Talking to as many people as we could because it's important to you to get that moment.
- 7:27Right?
- 7:27I felt
- 7:28bad that there were some people that we couldn't get to at the end of the day because
- 7:32everyone deserves that time on that carpet, and this is your time to shine.
- 7:37And I think that's really what the Josie's are about is giving everyone that time to speak on
- 7:41stage, to enjoy being in that circle
- 7:44Right.
- 7:44Iconic circle, and, yeah, just just getting it done.
- 7:48So Yeah.
- 7:49Yeah.
- 7:49Awesome, Mike.
- 7:50Yeah.
- 7:50Hold on.
- 7:51I think we got another artist to get in.
- 7:52Yeah.
- 7:53This is how this rolls here.
- 7:54Alright.
- 8:05There we are.
- 8:06We're in the middle of an interview now, but step on in.
- 8:09Come on.
- 8:09You can sit up front while me and Mike are talking.
- 8:12Yeah.
- 8:12No worries.
- 8:12Close the door.
- 8:14I don't wanna interrupt.
- 8:15You're all good, man.
- 8:17Thank you.
- 8:17Hey.
- 8:18Shout out to Rudy Gunn.
- 8:20Josie, award winner.
- 8:22Nice to meet you.
- 8:23Popping in on the bus.
- 8:25I'm gonna sit over here.
- 8:26Yeah, man.
- 8:27I think you should be out of the shop most of the way there.
- 8:29That's all good.
- 8:30This is how it is on the bus.
- 8:32Right?
- 8:32We're having a traditional studio setting, so we get to kinda hang out and enjoy it.
- 8:36Thanks for the coffee, sir.
- 8:37I appreciate that.
- 8:38It was a long night.
- 8:39So for everyone watching at home, we had we had found a parking spot for this that we thought
- 8:45it was gonna be good for a few days, paid for the parking.
- 8:48And last night, I got a knock on the door about 01:30AM.
- 8:51Security, I'm going, what the hell, man?
- 8:54We weren't even partying outside of it like we were with Rudy the night before.
- 8:57And they're like, yeah, you can't sleep in here.
- 9:00You gotta get a hotel room.
- 9:01And I was like, man, your rooms are $500 a night.
- 9:03I can't afford that.
- 9:04Yeah.
- 9:05And they're like, well, actually, the hotel's full anyway, so you gotta move the bus.
- 9:08And I was like, well, I don't drive the bus.
- 9:09I didn't drive the bus here.
- 9:10I didn't drive the bus to this spot.
- 9:12Well, it's gonna get towed then.
- 9:14Well, that's not an option either.
- 9:15Right?
- 9:15So we I jumped up.
- 9:18I nutted up to the table here and got her done.
- 9:22Right?
- 9:22I didn't have to drive it far, thankfully, and I had a big parking lot to whip it around in.
- 9:26But now I can put bus driver on the resume, Mike.
- 9:29Right.
- 9:29That's right.
- 9:30You can do it.
- 9:31Well, you couldn't make this shit up, guys.
- 9:33I'm telling you.
- 9:34It's been a wild journey, and meeting you, Mike, has been a part of it as well.
- 9:39So, yeah, we were talking about your experience as a nominee of the Joe season getting out
- 9:43there and, you know, the feeling of sitting there, hearing your name called over the
- 9:47loudspeakers.
- 9:48Like, just take us through a little bit of your journey from, you know, showing up at the Opry
- 9:51on Sunday evening and through the the end of the night.
- 9:55Well, yeah, since it was my first time, I didn't know what to expect.
- 9:58So it it's certainly exciting to be at the Grand Ole Opry, and that is a that's an iconic
- 10:03iconic place, and it's a place that's embraced all sorts of music.
- 10:06So it was great for the Josies to be recognizing independent artists of all genres,
- 10:12and we're all there to celebrate music.
- 10:14We all love music.
- 10:15So to be there, to sit in the audience I don't come to Nashville and not go to the Grand Ole
- 10:20Opry, but to be there and actually be there to be part of it It's different.
- 10:25Yeah.
- 10:25Right.
- 10:26This is my first time in Nashville.
- 10:27Okay.
- 10:28And I've I've said for weeks now, like, somebody pinched me.
- 10:30This is
- 10:30a dream.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:31I mean, do I end up on this bus Right.
- 10:33In this building, not just here to enjoy the show, but to be part of the show.
- 10:38Yeah.
- 10:38And I think that what the scene projects brought was a big part of the show.
- 10:41Getting to do the interviews and, you know, especially collecting all the autographs.
- 10:45I thought it
- 10:45was a nice touch and idea that I had.
- 10:47And then to see it in real time being something.
- 10:50Because who doesn't like, you know, as an independent artist, not a lot of people are
- 10:53asking for your autograph.
- 10:53Right.
- 10:54You know, I think Rudy told me that it it would devalue the piece of paper that it was on, but
- 10:58I don't believe that's true because now we have over a 100 artists that have signed that piece
- 11:03of paper, and all of these people are on the rise Yeah.
- 11:06And are winning awards and are being nominated and having their name called at the Opry.
- 11:10It's just and really, it was a way for me to just keep track of how many interviews I did
- 11:14Right. Without
- 11:14Without having
- 11:15to keep tabs and keep the counter in my pocket and keep going.
- 11:18So pretty incredible experience.
- 11:20And to to be a part of it is something special.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:25Absolutely.
- 11:26Yeah.
- 11:26Yes.
- 11:26So, Mike, what's coming up for you now, man?
- 11:28I I know you had a ton of music, and you're recording more releasing.
- 11:31So what's coming up next for Mike Custer?
- 11:34I just got out of the studio.
- 11:35We just finished two new songs, so they'll come out in '26.
- 11:39We've got I'm
- 11:41gonna
- 11:41be in Richmond, Virginia in two weeks, then Harpers Ferry, West Virginia later in November,
- 11:49then we'll take a break for a few months.
- 11:50Yeah.
- 11:51So you gig pretty regularly during the summer months Yeah.
- 11:53To try to get out there while the weather's nice.
- 11:55Yes.
- 11:55I know the Northeast
- 11:56is much like the Upper Midwest that, you know, travel becomes little touch and go.
- 12:00So booking too far out through the months of December through February is a little a little
- 12:05hectic.
- 12:06I I I don't like canceling shows, so I just kind of fare better not booking a whole lot
- 12:10at that time.
- 12:11Yeah.
- 12:12Yeah.
- 12:12So we won't really get started until March, late March.
- 12:16Come down south and do a little spring break tour
- 12:18or something.
- 12:19Yeah.
- 12:21Then we're we're off every week.
- 12:23We're we're off to another place every weekend.
- 12:26Incredible, man.
- 12:27Well, I wanna thank you so much for being a part of the show on the bus here and being a
- 12:32part of the Josie's.
- 12:33It was just an incredible experience.
- 12:34It was nice to meet you out there on the red carpet.
- 12:36Why don't you tell everybody how they can find you online and how you stream your music?
- 12:40Yeah.
- 12:40I'm at Mike Custer, that's custerwithak,.instagram, Spotify, everywhere.
- 12:48YouTube.
- 12:49YouTube is youtube.com/@mikecuster.
- 12:52So Fantastic.
- 12:53Lots of videos.
- 12:54Videos of me and the band playing official music videos and all my music.
- 12:59That's great.
- 13:00Well, this is, Josie nominee, Mike Custer.
- 13:04I am Bubba Starts.
- 13:05You've been on the bus, and this is the scene projects.
- 13:08Mike, I wanna thank for being part of the scene.
- 13:10Thank you, Bubba.
