Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcasts on the
- 0:19Speaker 1: Brink Friday, August first. Ryan Cross of Inside the Hall
- 0:24Speaker 1: this week's guest on Podcast on the Brink. Quickly, before
- 0:28Speaker 1: we get to Ryan, I just wanted to ask, if
- 0:30Speaker 1: you get a moment, please leave us a five star
- 0:32Speaker 1: rating and review over on Apple Podcasts. A five star
- 0:35Speaker 1: rating over on Spotify helps us grow the show, helps
- 0:39Speaker 1: more people find our podcast. That's our searching for IU
- 0:42Speaker 1: basketball specific content, which good chance that people will be
- 0:46Speaker 1: over the next couple of weeks as Indiana prepares for
- 0:49Speaker 1: its trip down to Puerto Rico to play three exhibition games.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Just had an open practice in Bloomington, and Ryan, welcome
- 0:56Speaker 1: back to the show. It's been a while since the spring. Obviously,
- 1:00Speaker 1: the roster has come more into focus in terms of
- 1:04Speaker 1: having now thirteen scholarship guys. With the two late editions,
- 1:07Speaker 1: we've got some resolution on Anthony Leal and Luke Goody.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But wanted to start off with just the idea that
- 1:14Speaker 1: that Indiana Basketball opened its doors to the media earlier
- 1:17Speaker 1: this week for a practice in Bloomington. I believe it's
- 1:20Speaker 1: the first time that we've had an open practice at
- 1:23Speaker 1: IU since the Tom creen, Era didn't have one in
- 1:26Speaker 1: Archie Miller, Era didn't have one under Mike Woodson. Good
- 1:29Speaker 1: opportunity for the media that was there to get a
- 1:31Speaker 1: chance to just kind of get a sense for what
- 1:33Speaker 1: they're working on, what a practice looks like, the organization,
- 1:37Speaker 1: which I wrote about on Inside the Hall. But Ryan,
- 1:40Speaker 1: you've had a chance to read what I wrote, read
- 1:42Speaker 1: some of the other coverage from around the Beat, and
- 1:45Speaker 1: just your big picture of thoughts on the fact that
- 1:48Speaker 1: we're getting for the first time in a long time,
- 1:51Speaker 1: I kind of a glimpse behind the scenes of IU basketball,
- 1:54Speaker 1: and I think with all of the turnover, the new
- 1:57Speaker 1: coaching staff, completely new roster, the opportunity to followly see
- 2:01Speaker 1: practice but talk to all these players, I think it's
- 2:03Speaker 1: been a really positive thing just in terms of the
- 2:06Speaker 1: fan base getting a little bit more familiar with this team.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think big picture wise with it all to me,
- 2:16Speaker 2: it goes back to when Dolson was looking for the
- 2:20Speaker 2: next coach and what he said in that initial press conference,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and I think what he's gotten in some sense with
- 2:25Speaker 2: Kurt Signetti is that CEO type And so when I
- 2:30Speaker 2: look at what's going on this summer with the program,
- 2:34Speaker 2: you know, not to say older regimes haven't put stuff
- 2:37Speaker 2: out on social media, but I think between some of
- 2:39Speaker 2: the social media clips in practice actually inviting team in
- 2:43Speaker 2: our media and rather to view the team. I think
- 2:48Speaker 2: when you think about that role, you know, whether I
- 2:52Speaker 2: guess people like it or not. I mean the Indiana coach,
- 2:54Speaker 2: and I think a CEO type is got to be
- 2:58Speaker 2: communicator and it's got to be a marketer. And so
- 3:00Speaker 2: I think that his ability to kind of bring everybody
- 3:05Speaker 2: in and like show off the product. You know, he
- 3:07Speaker 2: talked about it a little bit in his initial press
- 3:09Speaker 2: conference when he was initially hired. And now the doors
- 3:12Speaker 2: are actually open for people to see that high energy,
- 3:15Speaker 2: a lot of chatter going on, and you know him
- 3:18Speaker 2: talking about if there are days when some kids are
- 3:21Speaker 2: a little bit lower because everybody else has such high intensity,
- 3:24Speaker 2: has such high energy in the time that they have
- 3:26Speaker 2: that can kind of pick everybody up. And yeah, it's
- 3:28Speaker 2: about you know, being a CEO is like giving confidence
- 3:31Speaker 2: to Wall Street, giving confidence that the product that you're
- 3:34Speaker 2: selling in the direction that you're heading is is good
- 3:38Speaker 2: on its right and it's the it's the right decision,
- 3:40Speaker 2: so to speak. And I think looking at it from
- 3:42Speaker 2: that framework, I think is an interesting way to sort
- 3:45Speaker 2: of look at the decisions that have been made thus
- 3:49Speaker 2: far with how things are being communicated and marketed, and
- 3:54Speaker 2: but I think beyond that, it's a good kind of
- 3:57Speaker 2: glimpse into a brand new rock and frankly, unlike almost
- 4:02Speaker 2: any other time, maybe I guess a little bit the
- 4:06Speaker 2: very early time Green days, where things were quite different,
- 4:09Speaker 2: this is the first time in sort of this new
- 4:12Speaker 2: era as well. Something he's comfortable with doing because he
- 4:16Speaker 2: did it last year at West Virginia to pretty great success.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But this is such a new team that there's also
- 4:21Speaker 2: I think more of a hunger maybe at this point
- 4:23Speaker 2: in the season to know what's who the hell these
- 4:27Speaker 2: guys are I guess, right.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's kind of the feedback I've gotten
- 4:31Speaker 1: from some of the fan base that's responded to some
- 4:33Speaker 1: of the videos and things on social media is just
- 4:37Speaker 1: people trying to put a face with a name and
- 4:40Speaker 1: get familiar. I think the interviews, having a chance to
- 4:42Speaker 1: talk to these guys one on one was very helpful
- 4:45Speaker 1: for us getting to know a little bit about each guy, because,
- 4:48Speaker 1: as you meant, I mean, these are all these guys
- 4:50Speaker 1: are all brand new to the program and from the
- 4:54Speaker 1: practice specifically. You know, I can't claim to be someone
- 4:59Speaker 1: that's watched ton of college basketball practices. I do remember
- 5:03Speaker 1: going to a Tom Crean practice that was two and
- 5:05Speaker 1: a half to three hours long and thinking to myself,
- 5:08Speaker 1: I really wanted to come see practice, and about after
- 5:10Speaker 1: about seventy five minutes, I was like, we still have
- 5:13Speaker 1: another hour and a half to go. This is getting long.
- 5:17Speaker 1: So I was appreciative of the fact that we got
- 5:19Speaker 1: a look inside the other day, but it was just
- 5:21Speaker 1: an hour long. But to me, the thing that was
- 5:23Speaker 1: most impressive was just the organization and how things moved
- 5:29Speaker 1: within the practice. They came just to kind of give
- 5:31Speaker 1: everyone a brief overview of what it was like. You know,
- 5:35Speaker 1: they come in and the strengthen conditioning coaches out there
- 5:38Speaker 1: with his bow and as a whistle, which I guess
- 5:40Speaker 1: that's the thing. Now we've had that with Lionel Anderson,
- 5:43Speaker 1: going back to the Green era, Cliff Marshall, Ryan Horne
- 5:46Speaker 1: the strengthen conditioning coach now kind of the same thing,
- 5:48Speaker 1: kind of getting the energy in the building, but a
- 5:53Speaker 1: lot of communication between the players as they're going through stretching.
- 5:56Speaker 1: There was a loud music playing, but you can kind
- 5:58Speaker 1: of tell like it's a very scripted type of practice,
- 6:02Speaker 1: like they're gonna do the same thing to get loose
- 6:05Speaker 1: and get ready to go. But then once practice started,
- 6:07Speaker 1: there was a lot of emphasis on doing things at
- 6:10Speaker 1: game speed and repetition, doing things that were actually like
- 6:14Speaker 1: translate to a game, not just basic drills. So there
- 6:18Speaker 1: was a lot of pace, a lot of energy, a
- 6:19Speaker 1: lot of communication, a lot of guys talking. The coaches
- 6:22Speaker 1: were constantly pointing things out, not in a negative way,
- 6:27Speaker 1: but just kind of giving feedback on letting guys know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: like you know, maybe a little go a little bit
- 6:32Speaker 1: harder this way, or you missed this small detail. But
- 6:36Speaker 1: it was there was no time when anyone was not
- 6:40Speaker 1: in movement. That really impressed me, and by the end
- 6:43Speaker 1: you could tell guys were fatigued. I mean there was
- 6:44Speaker 1: short breaks in between drills for like like water, but
- 6:49Speaker 1: it was really short, like like a minute long, and
- 6:51Speaker 1: the guys were talking and constantly, and to me, that
- 6:55Speaker 1: was the most impressive thing was just the pace and
- 6:58Speaker 1: the energy that was in there. And if they're doing
- 7:00Speaker 1: that every day, that's a lot of work that they're
- 7:03Speaker 1: putting in and I was. I talked to somebody who's
- 7:06Speaker 1: been around the program for quite a while and ask
- 7:11Speaker 1: them how it compares to Mike Woodson practice. And again
- 7:14Speaker 1: this is not to disparage that regime or in any way,
- 7:18Speaker 1: but just a completely different way of doing things in
- 7:20Speaker 1: terms of the organization and the pace of everything. So
- 7:24Speaker 1: to me, you know, what's the old saying is like
- 7:27Speaker 1: you play how you practice. If that's if there's any
- 7:31Speaker 1: translation to that, you can definitely tell that this is
- 7:33Speaker 1: going to be a team that's going to be very prepared.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And I just like the organization in the structure. It
- 7:39Speaker 1: feels like there's somebody in charge that really knows what
- 7:42Speaker 1: they're doing in terms of what they're working on on
- 7:44Speaker 1: a day to day basis. That really stood out for me.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Mentioned the Woodson regime there, but I think we're still
- 7:54Speaker 2: in that period where it's kind of impossible not to
- 7:57Speaker 2: compare it back, right, So I think to that end,
- 8:02Speaker 2: a couple of things that stood out there.
- 8:04Speaker 3: I know it's kind of a that that theory of opposites.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I think last time I came on maybe I briefly
- 8:10Speaker 2: touched on and it's from Exus and Joe's Mike Weemouth
- 8:13Speaker 2: weymouth weymouth, you know, not the only pronunciation I'll probably
- 8:17Speaker 2: mess up today. But but he he talked about this
- 8:21Speaker 2: right that in looking for the next coach, sometimes you
- 8:25Speaker 2: look very differently than what you had in the past,
- 8:28Speaker 2: from the past coach to kind of just set a
- 8:31Speaker 2: new path there, so to speak.
- 8:33Speaker 3: And I think that a couple things with him.
- 8:36Speaker 2: One is you you mentioned him at the top here,
- 8:39Speaker 2: that's Nick Ryan Horn rather strength and conditioning coach.
- 8:44Speaker 3: He was with him at Drake.
- 8:46Speaker 2: He came with in the West Virginia and he is
- 8:48Speaker 2: now in Indiana. And he talked about in the press
- 8:52Speaker 2: conference this idea that he knows what I do. I
- 8:58Speaker 2: know what he does. If I put one day, he'll
- 9:01Speaker 2: tailor it back and vice versa. If he pushes, I
- 9:04Speaker 2: know that I can kind of tailor it back one day.
- 9:06Speaker 2: And there's kind of a symbiosis and a longer held
- 9:09Speaker 2: relationship there where you look back to woods End, he
- 9:12Speaker 2: inherited Cliff Marshall.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Nothing against him. I know the kids really liked him.
- 9:15Speaker 2: And for a staff that maybe especially at the head
- 9:18Speaker 2: of the staff, didn't bring a lot of energy, he
- 9:20Speaker 2: certainly was the one doing it, but it was just
- 9:23Speaker 2: somebody that was there, and you know, maybe they had
- 9:24Speaker 2: a conversation. Not that I know the intimate details of
- 9:26Speaker 2: by Cliffe Marshall stuck around for the Woodson era, but
- 9:29Speaker 2: I think that kind of shows the difference. That there's
- 9:32Speaker 2: something too with Devriesa and Horn where they have this
- 9:36Speaker 2: relationship and he has, you know, a little bit of
- 9:40Speaker 2: long relationship there.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I would also say too, another thing that stuck stuck
- 9:44Speaker 3: out to me in this regard was he is meant
- 9:47Speaker 3: he mentioned that the defense is behind the offense now,
- 9:50Speaker 3: but that as they keep going along here for their
- 9:53Speaker 3: ball stream coverages, using the term we as like as
- 9:56Speaker 3: a staff but also as the players, we're gonna keep going.
- 9:59Speaker 3: We're going to find out what works best for our
- 10:01Speaker 3: personnel and what we feel most comfortable with, and yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 3: that may need to change here and there. But I
- 10:06Speaker 3: think that's such a different philosophy than Woodson, who you know,
- 10:11Speaker 3: at times said Nail slot Rim, this is what we do.
- 10:14Speaker 3: We're never getting away from it.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Even if the personnel that they had, they didn't really
- 10:18Speaker 2: have these long rangy athletes to be able to help
- 10:20Speaker 2: one pass away and get back to the ball and
- 10:22Speaker 2: so sometimes when I say this is like feels a
- 10:26Speaker 2: little like common sense. You take what you have and
- 10:28Speaker 2: you make the best of it. But it's another one
- 10:31Speaker 2: of these where the bar is sort of at for
- 10:34Speaker 2: overall philosophy and the program and really two he just
- 10:40Speaker 2: hearing him speak, he has such like a familiarity with
- 10:44Speaker 2: like the seasons of college basketball, like what the summer
- 10:48Speaker 2: is in college basketball, and what you have to throw,
- 10:50Speaker 2: especially at a new group. All this stuff kind of
- 10:52Speaker 2: rapid fire, and they got to kind of pick it
- 10:54Speaker 2: up as they go.
- 10:55Speaker 3: And he just.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Because he's been a college coach for so long, I
- 10:59Speaker 2: think one of this stuff is such an ingrained second
- 11:02Speaker 2: nature how he goes about everything, and he knows the
- 11:04Speaker 2: calendar very well. Well, again, if you have somebody kind
- 11:07Speaker 2: of coming in from the NBA ranks that at this
- 11:10Speaker 2: time of the year is maybe not used to having
- 11:12Speaker 2: to do anything right because it's this is kind of
- 11:15Speaker 2: the very very dead period of an NBA calendar with
- 11:19Speaker 2: I don't know, I guess some leagues wrapped at this point,
- 11:20Speaker 2: and not that head coaches are super involved there, but you.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Get what I'm saying.
- 11:23Speaker 2: So I think that those things have really stuck out
- 11:26Speaker 2: to me just in terms of again really really knowing
- 11:30Speaker 2: what your philosophy is, how you want to play, how
- 11:34Speaker 2: you run a program. That's coming across very very clear
- 11:37Speaker 2: to me and very naturally out of him in a
- 11:40Speaker 2: way that I think does contrast with Woodson.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, he's grinded his way through the ranks
- 11:46Speaker 1: of college basketball. He was a long time assistant coach
- 11:49Speaker 1: at Creyton and really had to wait for his time
- 11:52Speaker 1: to become a head coach. So it's not surprising that
- 11:58Speaker 1: he kind of understands the role of what everyone in
- 12:00Speaker 1: the gym should be doing because he was in some
- 12:02Speaker 1: of those roles that other guys on his staff are in,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and something that really resonated with what you just said,
- 12:09Speaker 1: like talking about we have to do everything. Just again,
- 12:13Speaker 1: not to harp on the woods in Earo, but it
- 12:14Speaker 1: was always in the press conferences, I got to get
- 12:16Speaker 1: these guys to do this. I got to get these
- 12:18Speaker 1: guys to figure this out. It never felt like it
- 12:21Speaker 1: was a whole staff approach, and I got the sense
- 12:24Speaker 1: that just the community of how this program is being run,
- 12:28Speaker 1: just watching that practice for an hour, everyone has a role.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Everyone in the gym is doing something there's not someone
- 12:33Speaker 1: just standing there. From student managers to the person running
- 12:36Speaker 1: the clock getting it to the next drill, to the
- 12:40Speaker 1: guys who are in there as practice players that are
- 12:42Speaker 1: doing different things. Everyone is in alignment with what's supposed
- 12:46Speaker 1: to be going on. And that's one thing that really
- 12:49Speaker 1: stood out in terms of the organization. Now, from what
- 12:51Speaker 1: I actually saw from a basketball perspective, you mentioned the
- 12:55Speaker 1: offense being far ahead of the defense. Are ahead of
- 12:58Speaker 1: the defense? I would say the offense is very ahead
- 13:00Speaker 1: of the defense right now. The last fifteen minutes or
- 13:03Speaker 1: so of practice, there was a long sequence where there
- 13:08Speaker 1: was Josh Harris, Ian Stevens, who's a walk on, and
- 13:11Speaker 1: three other guys who aren't even on the team that
- 13:13Speaker 1: were going on offense against the first team defense, and
- 13:17Speaker 1: there was several possessions in a row where they got
- 13:20Speaker 1: favorable looks and scored and you know, they had the
- 13:24Speaker 1: first team had to run back and forth. You could
- 13:25Speaker 1: tell Devies was a little bit annoyed by that, but
- 13:28Speaker 1: again it's the end of a practice, so that's kind
- 13:30Speaker 1: of when you want to work on these things from
- 13:31Speaker 1: a defensive perspective. So the other thing is they brought
- 13:35Speaker 1: in a ton of guys who have a really strong
- 13:38Speaker 1: offensive reputation read Bailey, Lamar Wilkerson, tayt and Connorway obviously
- 13:44Speaker 1: known a little bit more for his defense, but a
- 13:46Speaker 1: lot of guys with different skills offensively, So it shouldn't
- 13:49Speaker 1: be particulous surprising that that would translate quicker than learning
- 13:53Speaker 1: for a brand new defensive system for a lot of
- 13:56Speaker 1: these guys, some pack line principles. There was a lot
- 13:59Speaker 1: of emphasis on positioning and rotating and getting out the
- 14:02Speaker 1: shooters and things like that when the ball moves around
- 14:05Speaker 1: the perimeter. So a lot of detail there, But I
- 14:07Speaker 1: think it's gonna be one of those things where it's
- 14:10Speaker 1: gonna take some time for this group to get it defensively,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and that's okay because it's a brand new group. It's
- 14:14Speaker 1: a brand new system for a lot of these guys.
- 14:16Speaker 1: You could definitely tell that Tucker Devrees and Connor in
- 14:18Speaker 1: Wright were kind of at the forefront in terms of
- 14:21Speaker 1: knowing what to do defensively, so that those were from
- 14:24Speaker 1: a basketball perspective, My big takeaways from a team perspective.
- 14:28Speaker 1: But I'm excited to see the potential of what this
- 14:33Speaker 1: can be offensively because I think I made a note
- 14:37Speaker 1: with what I wrote. There's nine scholarship players that were
- 14:40Speaker 1: on the court. I think only one didn't take a
- 14:42Speaker 1: three during the practice that I saw that was Sam Beallexis.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Everyone else took a three pointer at some time. There
- 14:47Speaker 1: wasn't a lot of I mean, Lamar Wilkerson is a
- 14:50Speaker 1: guy that we've talked about this whole debate of do
- 14:53Speaker 1: you take mid range shots and do you kind of
- 14:55Speaker 1: get rid of that completely. I think he's a guy
- 14:57Speaker 1: that you're gonna just let shoot the ball from anywhere
- 14:58Speaker 1: on the court because he's a guy that can just
- 15:00Speaker 1: go get you a bucket. But a lot of the
- 15:02Speaker 1: shots from the other guys, it was like you're either
- 15:04Speaker 1: taking a three or getting something in the pain at
- 15:06Speaker 1: the rim, which is also a departure from what we've
- 15:09Speaker 1: seen in the past. So, you know, just kind of
- 15:12Speaker 1: rambling there a bit, but just kind of wanted to
- 15:13Speaker 1: expand a little bit in terms of what I saw
- 15:15Speaker 1: from an offensive defensive perspective. If you have anything to add, Ryan,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I'm curious to hear kind of what your reaction to
- 15:22Speaker 1: that is.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, in terms of what was set in the
- 15:28Speaker 2: media availability after that practice, I think that.
- 15:33Speaker 3: He was pretty.
- 15:36Speaker 2: You know, he said, these guys almost looked like they've
- 15:39Speaker 2: been playing together for a couple of years on offense,
- 15:41Speaker 2: and obviously to maybe be that connected at this point,
- 15:47Speaker 2: and again it's just the coach talking about it.
- 15:49Speaker 3: So although you know you were there and you did
- 15:50Speaker 3: see some of it, but.
- 15:53Speaker 2: When you think beyond the shooting with this group, there
- 15:55Speaker 2: were some guys that came in that have really high
- 15:57Speaker 2: assist rates, and I think they're very good at knowing
- 16:02Speaker 2: how to find guys throw good passes in the right
- 16:05Speaker 2: spots and excel in that. And so that to me
- 16:09Speaker 2: can translate pretty immediately right on the court. Where on defense,
- 16:16Speaker 2: as he pointed out in the press conference as well,
- 16:20Speaker 2: so many different philosophies and so many different ways to
- 16:22Speaker 2: teach things, and all these guys are coming from different programs,
- 16:27Speaker 2: so that's just kind of a stickier wicket to try
- 16:29Speaker 2: to get everybody on the same page on. So, you know,
- 16:33Speaker 2: in that sense, I think I think it makes sense
- 16:35Speaker 2: in terms of where things are at. And I'm also
- 16:39Speaker 2: not surprised maybe that there's potentially a little bit more
- 16:43Speaker 2: emphasis on the offensive end, just because of his sort
- 16:46Speaker 2: of pedigree and sort of what we know of Creighton's
- 16:49Speaker 2: offense and kind of carrying that that through and I
- 16:53Speaker 2: think that was more when you started reading and watching
- 16:58Speaker 2: some film and all those not the same. West Virginia
- 17:00Speaker 2: last year was actually are elite defensive team, but I
- 17:05Speaker 2: think this was sort of an offense forward sort of
- 17:08Speaker 2: narrative coming in with them in terms of how they play,
- 17:11Speaker 2: how they share the ball, how they space the floor,
- 17:13Speaker 2: how they shoot more threes, et cetera. So it kind
- 17:16Speaker 2: of correlates, I think so far in terms of maybe
- 17:19Speaker 2: expectations in terms of where the team is at.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think also this time of year,
- 17:27Speaker 1: it's crazy to make any like big picture projections based
- 17:30Speaker 1: on what we see for in an hour practice. Again,
- 17:32Speaker 1: there was some struggles defensively, but they've been working together
- 17:35Speaker 1: for seven or eight weeks. They still haven't even started
- 17:37Speaker 1: official practice. We don't know what they've been emphasizing on
- 17:40Speaker 1: a day to day basis. So we'll see when the
- 17:42Speaker 1: actual games start. But we are going to get a
- 17:44Speaker 1: sneak peak of the season here with the games in
- 17:47Speaker 1: Puerto Rico starting out next week. Not going to be
- 17:51Speaker 1: any live video my understanding of these games, no broadcasts,
- 17:54Speaker 1: so for us that are staying at home. We're sending
- 17:57Speaker 1: Josh post from inside the hall down there, So he's
- 18:00Speaker 1: gonna be our eyes and ears down in Puerto Rico,
- 18:02Speaker 1: and he's gonna do his best to kind of relay
- 18:06Speaker 1: what he sees. But Ryan, what do you think we
- 18:11Speaker 1: can we make out of the games that are played
- 18:13Speaker 1: down in Puerto Rico? If anything? Is this just more
- 18:16Speaker 1: of a thing where I feel like we have the
- 18:20Speaker 1: tendency to you know, And I remember going up to
- 18:23Speaker 1: Montreal watching the Foreign Tour back in twenty fourteen, and
- 18:26Speaker 1: then Tyler Toshman went in twenty twenty one to the Bahamas,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and I feel like sometimes we can see stats from
- 18:32Speaker 1: these games or see something that happens and try to
- 18:35Speaker 1: project it into a regular season game. But we even
- 18:38Speaker 1: do this. I feel like with the regular season too,
- 18:40Speaker 1: Like they'll play some of these cupcake games early and
- 18:42Speaker 1: a guy will come in and have like a really
- 18:43Speaker 1: good game, and we're like, well, this guy might be
- 18:45Speaker 1: a part of the rotation. Then by the time big
- 18:46Speaker 1: tim play hits, he's the eighth man and barely playing.
- 18:50Speaker 1: So I feel like sometimes we can over emphasize what
- 18:56Speaker 1: happens on these trips but I think from just a
- 19:01Speaker 1: perspective of lineups and kind of seeing who starts and
- 19:05Speaker 1: maybe who's doing what, I think that's maybe the biggest
- 19:08Speaker 1: things we're gonna be able to take away from this.
- 19:10Speaker 1: But also at the same time, you have to remember
- 19:13Speaker 1: that I think he's gonna want to get guys as
- 19:15Speaker 1: many minutes as possible, maybe get some of the younger guys,
- 19:17Speaker 1: which is just Trent Sisley. But we'll see what happens
- 19:20Speaker 1: with the newcomers in terms of the international players if
- 19:25Speaker 1: they get a chance to play down there. But you know,
- 19:27Speaker 1: I think it's a valuable experience from the standpoint of
- 19:31Speaker 1: it's a brand new team and get a chance to
- 19:32Speaker 1: play some games. But I also don't want to go
- 19:36Speaker 1: too far in terms of just making any grand conclusions
- 19:41Speaker 1: from three exhibition games in early August out in Puerto Rico.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Yeah, at the end of the day, it's almost more
- 19:48Speaker 2: for the team and the program and to try to
- 19:51Speaker 2: just get some more wraps and get some more sort
- 19:53Speaker 2: of quote unquote like real world live wraps in a
- 19:55Speaker 2: game that I think it is for the observers of
- 19:58Speaker 2: the program. Remembering Bahamas, I feel like Tamar Bates really
- 20:03Speaker 2: stuck out and he.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Was gonna he was gonna be a first round pick
- 20:07Speaker 1: after a freshman or something freshman year, right, maybe something
- 20:09Speaker 1: like that.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Now, he went on to have a pretty good college
- 20:13Speaker 2: career at.
- 20:13Speaker 3: A at the Zoo.
- 20:15Speaker 2: But uh, in terms of an Indiana uniform, that didn't
- 20:17Speaker 2: quite work out, And yeah, you're right, it's it's a
- 20:20Speaker 2: small sample size. It's in a different environment than a
- 20:25Speaker 2: kind of different class of teams than they're gonna see
- 20:29Speaker 2: during the regular season. So it's more I think about
- 20:32Speaker 2: seeing this scalf the sort of the scaffolding in the
- 20:35Speaker 2: architecture of the program and how things are run on
- 20:39Speaker 2: the floor and maybe those sorts of things, than it
- 20:43Speaker 2: is the kind of drilling in on one player or
- 20:47Speaker 2: one guy that might pop off and say, okay, well
- 20:49Speaker 2: this is this is gonna be how it is, because yeah,
- 20:51Speaker 2: it's just it's just a different environment.
- 20:53Speaker 3: It's gonna be early August.
- 20:55Speaker 2: So there is Uh, I don't of caution is the
- 20:58Speaker 2: right word, but there's certainly the idea of tempering expectations
- 21:04Speaker 2: or not taking everything as gospel with how things go
- 21:08Speaker 2: and how guys certainly looked on there. And yeah, I
- 21:10Speaker 2: mean there's a couple players right now that are injured
- 21:14Speaker 2: that aren't going to be in the mix, that might
- 21:16Speaker 2: be more strongly in the mix by the time the
- 21:18Speaker 2: fall hits. And then both of the international players, it
- 21:21Speaker 2: looks like Restick Restitch.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I'm going with Retitch Restitch is maybe did he just
- 21:29Speaker 3: maybe I saw that yesterday. He maybe just arrived or
- 21:32Speaker 3: he's about to arrive. So the fact that they're going.
- 21:35Speaker 2: To be down there in a couple of days and
- 21:36Speaker 2: he's just arriving with the team, it sounds like maybe
- 21:40Speaker 2: he'll get in, maybe he won't. And obviously he's got
- 21:44Speaker 2: to get up the speed. So and then this recent
- 21:47Speaker 2: pickup that they had earlier this week as well from Bosnia,
- 21:51Speaker 2: it's like, these guys aren't even going to be in
- 21:53Speaker 2: the mix at all in this and they could be
- 21:55Speaker 2: later in the season. So right now, it's sort of
- 21:59Speaker 2: the the guys that brought you here. I think in
- 22:02Speaker 2: terms of talker, I think in terms of en right
- 22:04Speaker 2: sort of not to say that he's going to be, uh,
- 22:07Speaker 2: you know, a key, key, key, key, key contributor, but
- 22:10Speaker 2: in terms of because he knows the program, and it
- 22:14Speaker 2: sounds like at this point those guys are kind of
- 22:16Speaker 2: running things a bit, and as other players get more
- 22:19Speaker 2: up to speed with the program and everything, things may
- 22:22Speaker 2: kind of shape shift by the time, you know, we're
- 22:24Speaker 2: sitting here in March.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and our my fly is back here that we
- 22:30Speaker 1: man the uh you know, the first take of the podcast,
- 22:33Speaker 1: we had a fly that was obviously that's on my
- 22:37Speaker 1: forehead now for those watching on video, but so we
- 22:40Speaker 1: had to We stopped after five minutes and I tried
- 22:43Speaker 1: to actually locate the fly in the room, was trying
- 22:46Speaker 1: to track it down for five minutes, couldn't find it.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Thought it had left.
- 22:49Speaker 2: So now why we should have just kept it rolling
- 22:54Speaker 2: this You know, we could have first taked it because
- 22:56Speaker 2: this this flies back.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Oh yeah, so those watching them video are getting some
- 23:01Speaker 1: entertainment from this fly clearly annoying me by continuously landing
- 23:06Speaker 1: on my head and flying in front of my face.
- 23:08Speaker 1: But moving on the other thing. Just talking to people
- 23:12Speaker 1: around the program, one thing that is being really emphasized
- 23:15Speaker 1: about this trip is it's not just about the basketball.
- 23:18Speaker 1: It's about the team building off the court. They're gonna
- 23:21Speaker 1: be down there for a week, They're only playing three games.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I don't think there's gonna be like a ton of
- 23:25Speaker 1: prep work before each game in terms of like scouting reports.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I don't think they're breaking down film of this Puerto
- 23:32Speaker 1: Rico team that they're gonna pay. I don't even know
- 23:33Speaker 1: if they know who's gonna be on it on a game,
- 23:36Speaker 1: you know, for the first game, and I know the
- 23:38Speaker 1: team that they're gonna play from Serbia. There's probably not
- 23:41Speaker 1: a lot of prep work going into that as well.
- 23:43Speaker 1: So I think a lot of what they're gonna be
- 23:46Speaker 1: doing is off the court things in terms of just
- 23:49Speaker 1: spending time together. And I think from a team building perspective,
- 23:52Speaker 1: that was something else that I just wanted to mention.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I think is a big part of this trip that
- 23:56Speaker 1: they could I felt like with Cream when he did
- 23:58Speaker 1: this trip, it was definitely about the basketball, because I
- 24:01Speaker 1: remember we went to Montreal, it was like six days,
- 24:03Speaker 1: he played five games. I was like, this guy's like
- 24:06Speaker 1: clearly like trying to get like a ton out of
- 24:09Speaker 1: this from a basketball perspective. But Derees is almost like, Yeah,
- 24:12Speaker 1: We're going down there to play some games, but I'm
- 24:14Speaker 1: not too worried about the results of the games or
- 24:17Speaker 1: what actually happens in the games. I'm going down there
- 24:19Speaker 1: more for the experience of getting these guys together, getting
- 24:21Speaker 1: them to the bomb, which I think is a good thing.
- 24:23Speaker 1: This is like a perfect time to take one of
- 24:24Speaker 1: these trips. It's you got a brand new roster, you
- 24:26Speaker 1: got a brand new coach. You get down there, you
- 24:30Speaker 1: have the opportunity to to spend some time and do
- 24:34Speaker 1: some bonding and all that I think is a great thing.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I wanted to ask you Ryan. We haven't had you
- 24:37Speaker 1: on the show since they've had these two international additions
- 24:40Speaker 1: to the roster. The Serbian guard Alexa Resticho, we've had
- 24:44Speaker 1: a chance to see some video of, at least recently
- 24:48Speaker 1: from his play in the Foba event, and then the
- 24:51Speaker 1: more recent edition was the Bosnian big man Andre I
- 24:56Speaker 1: don't even want to just call him Andre. You can uh,
- 25:01Speaker 1: We'll wait for an official pronunciation from the IU folks
- 25:04Speaker 1: when that happens. Just just curious. Do you have any
- 25:06Speaker 1: thoughts on those guys? And I don't think we we'll
- 25:10Speaker 1: see a ton of them on this trip, if anything,
- 25:12Speaker 1: but they seem like more long term development pieces other
- 25:17Speaker 1: than guys that can make a huge impact. I feel
- 25:19Speaker 1: like research has a chance to maybe play more, if
- 25:22Speaker 1: at all, of these two guys as a freshman.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think based on Research's skill set, he to
- 25:31Speaker 2: me seems pretty intriguing.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Getting this late start here and coming in.
- 25:38Speaker 2: When he's coming in, We'll see how long it might
- 25:40Speaker 2: take him to come along.
- 25:41Speaker 3: But uh, in terms of.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Asimovic, I'm just gonna we'll just we'll just throw it
- 25:48Speaker 2: out there. I think the biggest critique, and honestly one
- 25:53Speaker 2: of the biggest narratives going around the last couple of
- 25:55Speaker 2: months in terms of the online chatter with this program,
- 25:58Speaker 2: is where's the rim protector? Where's room protect Everyone says, oh, well,
- 26:02Speaker 2: they got shooting, and they got passing, and they got this,
- 26:04Speaker 2: they got that.
- 26:04Speaker 3: But there is no quote unquote true big on this team.
- 26:08Speaker 2: And I think a lot of people were sort of
- 26:11Speaker 2: kept banging that drum, maybe to a degree that didn't
- 26:16Speaker 2: need to be banged, because you know, you can some
- 26:18Speaker 2: people point to, well, there's other ways you can kind
- 26:20Speaker 2: of go about defending a team, if you put some
- 26:23Speaker 2: more ball pressure up front, et cetera. But this, at
- 26:27Speaker 2: least this pickup to me is we had a need
- 26:30Speaker 2: for a shot blocker, and we are bringing in a
- 26:36Speaker 2: player that has a skill set of blocking shots. I think,
- 26:42Speaker 2: I mean, what somebody of that stuff? Some many of
- 26:45Speaker 2: these guys like, Okay, here's a two minute highlight reel
- 26:48Speaker 2: and what can you really gather from that?
- 26:49Speaker 3: To me, offensively, he looks a little a little slow
- 26:55Speaker 3: getting into his moves.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I don't think he's hyper athletic, but just like so
- 27:00Speaker 2: many other players on this team, to me, his passing
- 27:03Speaker 2: stood out. I was like, oh, this this is another
- 27:05Speaker 2: big that can pass the ball.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Well.
- 27:07Speaker 2: He ran the floor pretty well too. I think the
- 27:09Speaker 2: timing on his some of the couple of shot blocks
- 27:14Speaker 2: they had at the very end of that video look
- 27:17Speaker 2: pretty pretty strong as well. So I'm not sure how
- 27:23Speaker 2: much of a rotation player he might be at all
- 27:28Speaker 2: this year. But if they were really trying to just
- 27:31Speaker 2: find somebody to fill a need and I don't know
- 27:35Speaker 2: rolling the dice on it, this to me, these fills
- 27:38Speaker 2: that need in a way that a lot of the
- 27:40Speaker 2: other you know.
- 27:41Speaker 3: No, Sam Alexis. That's another one where.
- 27:44Speaker 2: We talk about the idea of well he's only six
- 27:48Speaker 2: to nine, but he plays a little bit taller right
- 27:50Speaker 2: and against Some people are kind of graping on that that,
- 27:52Speaker 2: oh he's really not that big, Although I would say
- 27:54Speaker 2: tray Jackson Davis was a pretty good shot blocker and
- 27:57Speaker 2: not being a seven foot or too right, so I
- 27:59Speaker 2: it can be done at various sizes. But so yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 2: that's kind of where I see why I guess he
- 28:08Speaker 2: was brought in. But whether that's gonna actually be a
- 28:12Speaker 2: key cog in the rotation to really shore that rimp
- 28:15Speaker 2: production up, I'm not sure I see that right now.
- 28:18Speaker 1: At least, yeah, I agree with you. And the other
- 28:20Speaker 1: thing is we have to realize, like all of these
- 28:24Speaker 1: deals now on college basketball is a year to year basis.
- 28:26Speaker 1: So if somebody comes in and whatever reason doesn't get
- 28:29Speaker 1: the playing time that they want or the program feels
- 28:31Speaker 1: like it's not the right fit, then you know, we
- 28:34Speaker 1: kind of know how these situations and up there there's
- 28:36Speaker 1: movement every year in college bast I'm not saying that's
- 28:38Speaker 1: the case with either of these players, but there's no
- 28:40Speaker 1: reason not to fill your spots and take a chance
- 28:43Speaker 1: on somebody if you think there's potential, and who knows,
- 28:46Speaker 1: this guy, he may come in for a year and
- 28:49Speaker 1: not play at all and develop a lot over the season.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Then next offseason he's someone that maybe next year you
- 28:53Speaker 1: can put him in and play him ten to twelve minutes.
- 28:55Speaker 1: But I do think from watching practice again, it was
- 28:59Speaker 1: just an hour. I want to caveat this, but I
- 29:01Speaker 1: do think that was my biggest concern with this group defensively,
- 29:04Speaker 1: was there was I mentioned that stretch at the end
- 29:08Speaker 1: of practice where the kind of the walk Ons and
- 29:11Speaker 1: a couple of managers and another support staff guy were
- 29:14Speaker 1: playing against the first team, and when they got past
- 29:17Speaker 1: that first line of defense and got the ball on
- 29:19Speaker 1: the paint, there wasn't There's not a rim protector. So
- 29:22Speaker 1: this is really gonna have to be a team effort
- 29:25Speaker 1: in terms of how they're gonna guard the post. There's
- 29:26Speaker 1: gonna be some Knights in the Big Ten where it's
- 29:28Speaker 1: it's not gonna be great in terms of stopping teams
- 29:31Speaker 1: at the rim. I mean, you look at Michigan what
- 29:33Speaker 1: they have. Morris Johnson came over from Illinois and de
- 29:35Speaker 1: mar came over from UCLA. They've got the transfer from you.
- 29:39Speaker 1: I mean again, elite team, projected top five preseason. Same
- 29:43Speaker 1: thing with Purdue. They're gonna have a really good front court.
- 29:45Speaker 1: There's gonna be some nights in the Big Ten where
- 29:47Speaker 1: it's gonna be difficult, But I do think that it's
- 29:51Speaker 1: you know, it's a it's a it's a it's a
- 29:54Speaker 1: clear need for the program to get to bring some
- 29:56Speaker 1: additional size in the front court and to find someone
- 29:58Speaker 1: that can potentially develop into someone that can help protect
- 30:01Speaker 1: the rim. And it's again, you're not bringing this guy
- 30:05Speaker 1: in to be the starter. You're bringing him in to
- 30:06Speaker 1: be the twelve or thirteen man. Same thing with kind
- 30:09Speaker 1: of research, It's like, if you can develop these guys
- 30:12Speaker 1: over the course of the year and make them into
- 30:15Speaker 1: productive college players, I think that's also a good way
- 30:20Speaker 1: to kind of tap into this international market. Maybe you
- 30:22Speaker 1: can find some other players that you can point to
- 30:26Speaker 1: these guys and say, hey, we brought this guy in,
- 30:28Speaker 1: he didn't have a ton of options, and we developed
- 30:31Speaker 1: him into, you know, a guy that can contribute in
- 30:33Speaker 1: the Big ten level. I think it can only help.
- 30:35Speaker 1: And I do think it's also smart to just kind
- 30:37Speaker 1: of go international looking for players and talent because basketball
- 30:43Speaker 1: is a global game at this point, and you look
- 30:46Speaker 1: at what Illinois is doing, you're looking at what all
- 30:48Speaker 1: these other programs are doing. Indiana has never really done that,
- 30:51Speaker 1: and with the resources that they have and the fact
- 30:53Speaker 1: that they can pretty much go anywhere to scout guys
- 30:56Speaker 1: and look at guys. I think it's smart to kind
- 30:58Speaker 1: of open open this door and see what's out there,
- 31:02Speaker 1: and you know, who knows, maybe it leads to other
- 31:04Speaker 1: opportunities in the future. If you know that there could
- 31:06Speaker 1: be a coach or an Asian or somebody that that
- 31:10Speaker 1: looks at this and says, Indiana did a really good
- 31:12Speaker 1: job at this player, we want to send our guy there.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Well, that's just how college sports and really, you know,
- 31:18Speaker 2: drilling down the college basketball is now that because there
- 31:22Speaker 2: players are getting paid, there is a much bigger, more
- 31:26Speaker 2: robust international market for players to come in. And I
- 31:29Speaker 2: think some teams have been more advantageous with that and
- 31:33Speaker 2: have gone after that.
- 31:35Speaker 3: In the last year or two.
- 31:37Speaker 2: And late in the game in terms of when these
- 31:41Speaker 2: pickups happened, the Indiana staff identified a couple of players
- 31:45Speaker 2: as well, and I yeah, I think as time goes
- 31:49Speaker 2: along here, there's going to be probably even more of it,
- 31:52Speaker 2: because it's it's almost one of those I mean, there's
- 31:57Speaker 2: two things with it. I think it just expands the
- 32:00Speaker 2: Allen pool and you can get a better team if
- 32:02Speaker 2: you're really out there looking internationally instead of just in
- 32:05Speaker 2: the high school ranks or you know, in the transfer
- 32:09Speaker 2: portal for players, but the way some international wow, I mean,
- 32:17Speaker 2: I don't know if I should say all. But there's
- 32:20Speaker 2: also the different philosophy of how these players are learning
- 32:24Speaker 2: and being taught the game as opposed to American players.
- 32:27Speaker 2: And I think if you look at at least in
- 32:31Speaker 2: the professional ranks in terms of the NBA, and you
- 32:33Speaker 2: see some of these players that are are really you know,
- 32:36Speaker 2: playing well in the league, and some of the top
- 32:38Speaker 2: five players in the league, you say, you know, between
- 32:41Speaker 2: Yokichen and Luka doncis I mean, they're arguably two of
- 32:46Speaker 2: the top three or two of the top five.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Best players in the league. And they're international players.
- 32:50Speaker 2: So I think there's and I believe too now in
- 32:55Speaker 2: the NBA, like percentage of international players is just about
- 32:58Speaker 2: as high as it's ever been. I think, I don't know,
- 33:01Speaker 2: maybe they need to look that up after the pods
- 33:02Speaker 2: of we'll get our factor check here on that.
- 33:04Speaker 1: But you know, no, that's that's right. I mean. The
- 33:06Speaker 1: other the other thing, just not to interrupt you, is no,
- 33:09Speaker 1: go with the the way now that players can make
- 33:12Speaker 1: money in college basketball like they're they might be a
- 33:17Speaker 1: lot of these guys might be able to make more
- 33:19Speaker 1: coming to the US playing for their team and whatever
- 33:24Speaker 1: it is, uh, you know, Bosnia or Serbia. So that
- 33:28Speaker 1: that's another thing. And I think probably some of these
- 33:31Speaker 1: international teams don't don't like this, but it's just the
- 33:34Speaker 1: reality of the new system. So I think that can actually,
- 33:37Speaker 1: I think I actually can make the game better in
- 33:39Speaker 1: college basketball if some of these guys, more of these
- 33:41Speaker 1: guys are coming over to play, because we've kind of
- 33:43Speaker 1: seen that with the NBA, right, I mean thirty years ago,
- 33:45Speaker 1: there wasn't there weren't these many, this many international guys
- 33:49Speaker 1: playing in the NBA. You mentioned Jokic, don Giannis. I mean,
- 33:54Speaker 1: it's just the list goes on of great players. And
- 33:58Speaker 1: again it's it's a global game. So I think I
- 34:01Speaker 1: think it's smart for ending Her to tap into this
- 34:03Speaker 1: market and try to, you know, bring over players that
- 34:10Speaker 1: fit kind of what they want to do. And you know,
- 34:13Speaker 1: I think it can only be a good thing for
- 34:15Speaker 1: the health of college basketball. Yeah.
- 34:17Speaker 2: And it goes the other way too, right, because the
- 34:20Speaker 2: US players that maybe are trying to leave after their
- 34:24Speaker 2: sophomore year or they're looking to get paid internationally, they
- 34:29Speaker 2: can stay longer in college and get paid, or they're
- 34:32Speaker 2: trying to test the draft. Maybe I can be a
- 34:34Speaker 2: second round pick, maybe I can hook on somewhere, or
- 34:36Speaker 2: even I mean it's possible that even you know, first
- 34:40Speaker 2: rounders would be more apt to sticking around in college
- 34:43Speaker 2: potentially for another year.
- 34:44Speaker 3: So I think.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Between basically the money is making the product better. I
- 34:49Speaker 2: think there's a pretty big narrative that obviously the transfer
- 34:52Speaker 2: portal and guys moving around so much that this is
- 34:55Speaker 2: bad for the game, and like you know, and sometimes
- 34:57Speaker 2: I get that there's the lack of continuity and people
- 35:03Speaker 2: sort of bemoaning how it used to be and how
- 35:04Speaker 2: it is now.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 35:06Speaker 1: I just feel like this is a coach just complaining
- 35:08Speaker 1: about that, like no one from like from from my perspective,
- 35:13Speaker 1: Like I get like having wanting some continuity, But at
- 35:16Speaker 1: the same time, it's also like it's made the sport
- 35:21Speaker 1: more of a year round sport, right, I mean, we
- 35:24Speaker 1: have now we're talking about college basketball more days out
- 35:29Speaker 1: of the year than we ever did before. Because think
- 35:31Speaker 1: about like before the portal, like your team was pretty
- 35:33Speaker 1: much set, maybe you got a couple of spring recruiter too,
- 35:36Speaker 1: and then it was basically like April and May, we're
- 35:39Speaker 1: pretty quiet, and then you look to July for recruiting information.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Who coaches are watching that now, it's like the opposite
- 35:46Speaker 1: in terms of high school kids are kind of taking
- 35:49Speaker 1: a little bit of a backseat, and the portal is
- 35:52Speaker 1: we can we can to see it from the interest
- 35:53Speaker 1: in the website, right, I mean the portal the last
- 35:56Speaker 1: couple of years, there's more interest in that at times,
- 35:59Speaker 1: and there's actual game. So I think, you know, I
- 36:04Speaker 1: don't necessarily agree that it's I don't disagree that it's
- 36:08Speaker 1: a bad thing in some situations, but also I don't
- 36:11Speaker 1: think we're going to get back to the way it was.
- 36:13Speaker 1: So you just have to embrace the new era and
- 36:14Speaker 1: it is what it is.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Agree that's that's that's life. That that's the way the
- 36:20Speaker 3: world moves.
- 36:21Speaker 2: You know, some things change, and uh, especially if you're
- 36:25Speaker 2: going to be a coach and you're going to try
- 36:26Speaker 2: to be successful in this modern era, you got to adapt.
- 36:29Speaker 3: So you have to.
- 36:32Speaker 1: If you don't, if you're gonna complain about it, I mean,
- 36:34Speaker 1: then you're you've got one one foot out the door.
- 36:37Speaker 1: I mean there's been there alre been some coaches that
- 36:39Speaker 1: have said we don't want to do this, We're going
- 36:41Speaker 1: to get out of there. But yeah, I think it's
- 36:45Speaker 1: I mean, it's a whole other conversation in terms of
- 36:48Speaker 1: like where this ends up. And there's so many different
- 36:51Speaker 1: moving pieces with this that I think we'll eventually get
- 36:55Speaker 1: to a place where there's a more set in stone system.
- 37:00Speaker 1: But anytime there's like this big of a disruption in
- 37:02Speaker 1: any industry, like, there's a lot of steps you have
- 37:04Speaker 1: to take along the way to get to the finished product,
- 37:07Speaker 1: and this is just kind of where we are, so
- 37:09Speaker 1: just embrace it, enjoy it. I think for Indiana it's
- 37:13Speaker 1: actually a really good thing because they're gonna be one
- 37:14Speaker 1: of the programs that's gonna have among the top resources
- 37:19Speaker 1: in the sport. And for a long time we I
- 37:22Speaker 1: think Indiana fans would complain like, well, you know, these
- 37:25Speaker 1: programs buying these guys, this guy, we can't get some
- 37:29Speaker 1: of these guys. I think Indiana now is more on
- 37:30Speaker 1: a level playing field, and I think long term and
- 37:34Speaker 1: has a chance to really up the talent level in
- 37:38Speaker 1: the program. I think in terms of what the revenue
- 37:41Speaker 1: share is going to be spent towards men's basketball and
- 37:43Speaker 1: Bloomington is going to be as high as any in
- 37:45Speaker 1: the Big Ten, and I think the nil opportunities will
- 37:47Speaker 1: we get some more clarity on how that's all going
- 37:52Speaker 1: to be all gonna work in terms of this new
- 37:56Speaker 1: commission that's going to prove the Again, I still don't
- 37:58Speaker 1: understand how this is gonna work, like when the portal
- 38:00Speaker 1: actually opens, Like, are they gonna are they gonna actually
- 38:03Speaker 1: like look at every nil deal that comes across their
- 38:06Speaker 1: desk and say, I don't know how many people are
- 38:08Speaker 1: gonna be working on this. But again, a whole other conversation.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Last thing, Ryan, before we get you out of here,
- 38:14Speaker 1: just what from just a basketball perspective, if anything, are
- 38:21Speaker 1: you gonna look for in these Puerto Rico games, Like
- 38:24Speaker 1: in terms of like the games, are you gonna be
- 38:25Speaker 1: looking for from a statistical perspective like how many threes
- 38:30Speaker 1: are taken or anything? Or is that any of that
- 38:32Speaker 1: stuff matter at all? I think.
- 38:37Speaker 3: I will be looking for I don't know if I'll
- 38:40Speaker 3: be looking for it.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I think I'll just be basking in a in an
- 38:44Speaker 2: offense that spaces the floor, that passes, that passes well,
- 38:49Speaker 2: that shoots threes, that plays a modern style and more
- 38:53Speaker 2: of a style that puts you in the mix to
- 38:55Speaker 2: win more games, and however that sort of works itself
- 38:59Speaker 2: out with in these three games, I are a couple
- 39:01Speaker 2: of games here. I'm not looking for anything specific other
- 39:05Speaker 2: than maybe just feeling that and in knowing that that's
- 39:10Speaker 2: coming down the pike for the season and that it's
- 39:12Speaker 2: going to be quite different as we wrap up with
- 39:15Speaker 2: our theory of opposites than than the last regime. And
- 39:18Speaker 2: I'm just kind of interested in actually seeing an Indiana
- 39:22Speaker 2: team play this because as we know, it's not just
- 39:24Speaker 2: the Woods scenario. We gotta have about another four years
- 39:28Speaker 2: before that as well with Archie Miller and going on
- 39:31Speaker 2: almost a decade here of I think some style of
- 39:34Speaker 2: play that has not always been the most aesthetically pleasing,
- 39:37Speaker 2: and I'm just interested to see players in an Indiana
- 39:42Speaker 2: uniform playing playing a much different style on the offensive end.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Thanks for thanks for taking the Tom Ryan, always good
- 39:52Speaker 1: to catch up with you for In terms of the
- 39:55Speaker 1: podcast moving forward, Josh was obviously going to be in
- 39:58Speaker 1: Puerto Rico, so we're gonna try. I don't know if
- 40:03Speaker 1: it's gonna be after every game or at least a
- 40:04Speaker 1: couple of times when he's down there, to have him
- 40:07Speaker 1: on the show and kind of talk through what he saw,
- 40:09Speaker 1: what he observed. He's gonna be wearing a lot of
- 40:11Speaker 1: hats down there in terms of he's gonna be the
- 40:14Speaker 1: only man on the ground, so he's gonna be trying
- 40:16Speaker 1: to pay attention to the game, maybe film some cliffs
- 40:18Speaker 1: from the game, maybe post some things on social media
- 40:22Speaker 1: during the game. So a lot of different things going on.
- 40:24Speaker 1: But he you know, talked to him earlier in the
- 40:25Speaker 1: week up and blowing him when he was at the
- 40:27Speaker 1: open practice. He's really excited to get down there and
- 40:29Speaker 1: have a chance to watch this team. I think it's
- 40:30Speaker 1: gonna be I'm interested to see just what the atmosphere
- 40:34Speaker 1: is like down there. I don't really have any sense
- 40:35Speaker 1: of how many people actually gonna be going down there.
- 40:38Speaker 1: It's from what I understand, I gonna be played in
- 40:40Speaker 1: a pretty large arena. So could there be a thousand
- 40:43Speaker 1: AU fans there, could there be three thousand. I have
- 40:45Speaker 1: no idea what to expect from that perspective. So I
- 40:49Speaker 1: don't even have a firm schedule at this point in
- 40:52Speaker 1: terms of game times, and people keep asking me I
- 40:55Speaker 1: mentioned earlier as of right now no live broadcast plan
- 40:59Speaker 1: of the game. Who knows. Maybe someone when the stands
- 41:01Speaker 1: will live stream the games on YouTube. Who knows what's
- 41:04Speaker 1: going to happen with this, So we'll be curious to
- 41:07Speaker 1: see how that all plays out, but we'll have you
- 41:09Speaker 1: covered every step of the way. Again, Ryan, thanks for
- 41:12Speaker 1: taking the time to come on the show. Really really
- 41:14Speaker 1: enjoyed the conversation.
- 41:16Speaker 3: As always, happy to be here.
- 41:19Speaker 1: As we mentioned at the top, Please if you get
- 41:21Speaker 1: a chance to leave us the rating and review over
- 41:22Speaker 1: on Apple Podcasts five star rating, preferably with a review
- 41:27Speaker 1: and a five star rating over on Spotify. I've noticed
- 41:30Speaker 1: gotten to a few of those lately, so appreciate everyone
- 41:32Speaker 1: that's taking the time to do that. And we'll be
- 41:34Speaker 1: back soon with another episode of Podcast on the Brain.
