- 1:42J. Malone. We now present The Amazing Mister Malone, an exciting have
- 1:53hour of mystery and suspense starring John Saul as the lawyer we practiced before.
- 1:59Every type of barr has become a legend. Allow Carl is the City of
- 2:07New York, the time, the present, and the hero of these weekly
- 2:13adventures, the amazing mister Malone. Malone's the name John J. Malone,
- 2:38Attorney and counselor at law. And one of the things this business has made
- 2:42me is an expert on cliches. Take the one that goes money never made
- 2:46anyone happy. Geral Norman would get a big laugh out of that. Mister
- 2:50Norman is the sleek looking GM gliding down the corridor of the Wainwright Building.
- 2:53He's known around New York as a sharpshooter, will do anything for a buck,
- 2:58and so great is his rush to make one this morning that when he
- 3:00comes to a doormarked Walter Blake Investments, he doesn't even stop to knock,
- 3:05but enters will out an invitation. Hi, missus Blake, who's that?
- 3:09Joll Norman? And I told you on the phone I'd be right over.
- 3:14Yeah, but I don't remember your knocking. Norman, Huh, it's customary,
- 3:17you know. I suppose you try it again. You're kidding, am
- 3:23I? Well? What makes you happy? No? From the outside,
- 3:30Oh, you cut the car, I said, from the outside, Norman,
- 3:32Okay, who's there? You'll Norman, come in, that's much better.
- 3:47Yeah, you're probably wondering why I did that. Well, I just
- 3:53wanted you to know I allow no familiarity from people I employ or I'm about
- 3:55to imply. Is that understood? Yeah, saddan. He said something on
- 4:03the phone about the What about a proposition that might interest me? Uh?
- 4:08What would it be worth to you if I got poor Manfred out of your
- 4:12hair? What makes you think it'd be worth anything? Well, you,
- 4:15Manfreedo and Dude Kendall run practically the whole time. So I figured if I
- 4:20could get Manfred out of the way, you'd have a clear feel. You
- 4:24admit there are three of us. What about Dude Kendle. Maybe it could
- 4:26even be arranged for dude to take the rap. M Well, I think
- 4:31I can lead Manfredo into a trap. You won't go anywhere without a bodyguard,
- 4:36you would if I promised him a shot at you. What do you
- 4:41mean, Norman, suppose I phoned even said that I was setting up a
- 4:44trap for you. Only when he gets there we spring it onund here,
- 4:47that's the idea. What do you think it might? Of course it will?
- 4:53Is it worth five? Or? Come on? Blake? I'm taking
- 4:57quite a chance to five thousand, Norman, and not a penny. Well,
- 5:00if that's the best you can do, that's the fast I can do.
- 5:03Okay, I'll phone Manfred and set it up. Hello, Yes,
- 5:21Joe Norman here, I was just to see our friend, mister Blake.
- 5:25How did you make up? He went for a hooked line? What did
- 5:30you tell him before we agreed on we would ambush you and see du Kendle
- 5:33got the credit. That's very nice, Norman. Not quite. You're not
- 5:42exactly what I would call it trust worthy type Norman. How can I assume
- 5:46myself I won't the double cross? You've got my word, mister man that's
- 5:51they I asked the question. Well, Blake promised me fifteen grandson's job.
- 5:57Yes you no, I miss your turn. Well, I thought it would
- 6:01be worth an extra tend of you for the insurance angle. That way you
- 6:05know you can depend on you'd sell out your own mother, wouldn't you know?
- 6:14Man have to be right? So that's DESI the point? What about
- 6:16Blake? The level here? Had the stooped your letter placet to re stopped
- 6:20you late the time? What do we want? Quite about your feet?
- 6:40Just a second wearing the money this scat. We got a lot of things
- 6:46in Yes, mister Blake, if you don't mind, i'd rather an athlete
- 6:50my name. It's a little idiosyncrasy of mine. I'm sorry my husband isn't
- 6:55here. Oh it's funny. I was supposed to pick him over at age
- 6:59thirty. What you think could have happened? Oh hi, mister Blake,
- 7:01you're just saying you were hot. Well, darling, I didn't know you
- 7:06were expecting company, didn't I thought I mentioned it at dinner. I must
- 7:13have forgotten, Barbara. If there's one thing I can't tolerate, it's an
- 7:17interfering. I'm sure I won't have cause to remind you again, will I?
- 7:30Mister Blake, you'll oblige me Norman by minding your own business. You
- 7:33got me wrong, friend, I was just thinking you might want to save
- 7:35your strength. We've got a long ride ahead of us, and I wouldn't
- 7:38want to see you knock yourself out on her. Shall we go? How
- 7:50much further is a Norman? About a quarter of a mile off the road?
- 7:54You know where the Phoenix bridges? Yeah, it's just the side of
- 7:57it. What tournomen could get the ten thirty. I thought i'd give you
- 8:01plenty of time to look around. Why I told you I'd take care of
- 8:05every day. Have you figured out yet how dude Kensa is going to get
- 8:09the credits? Yeah? You know, the dude has everything he wears custom
- 8:13tailored. Well, well, I scatted around and found out who makes his
- 8:16gloves. I thought it might be a nice touch if they discovered one rights
- 8:20next to man Fleet's body. Have you got it? Yeah, right here,
- 8:24it's a little gray suede number. I must have cost him at least
- 8:28forty or fifty bucks for the payer. How did you get it? You
- 8:30know me? I got connections everywhere. Well, you better slow down.
- 8:35We're there. Uh huh. See those bushes? Yeah, well park your
- 8:41car in there so it won't be won't be spotted from the road. How's
- 8:50this fine? Hey? Will you listen to those frogs? They bother you?
- 8:58No a crook? Sometimes very funny. I guess. Suppose we get
- 9:03out on the stretch. Wait, I'm make sure I've got my gun.
- 9:07Don't bother mister Blake Andry. May I suggest you'd take Norman's advice get out
- 9:15and spray and see it from my side? Mister Blake. A guy's gotta
- 9:24look out for himself. And yes, you can't blame him Blake. The
- 9:28Normans are very messed on. Now, if you'll forgive me for rushing you,
- 9:41Yes, that does. Perhaps you got to do Kendle's flock. Suppose
- 9:45we drop it right off here. Mm hmmm, Well that takes care of
- 9:50mister Kendall. That takes care of mister I suppose you take care of me.
- 9:54You're leaving yourself right open there. No, I'm talking about the twenty
- 10:00grand you promised me. I was referring to something else I know, but
- 10:03you forget it, Manfred. Why it sounds like a wonderful idea, I
- 10:09faced Lucan, so do I. That's why I let the letter with a
- 10:13friend of mine addressed to the District Attorney's office. I'm not back by twelve
- 10:18o'clock. You'd go to Mayland. I'm sorry. I und estimated you.
- 10:24You'll get you on Monday good night. Three hours later, the police discovered
- 10:35the body of Walder Blake on the small dirt road twelve miles out of New
- 10:37York. But the first I know of it was the following morning, when
- 10:41I was awakened out of a deep sleep through half closed eyes. I peered
- 10:45at the alarm clock. It was five a m. There was no good
- 10:48reason why I couldn't turn around grab another couple of hours of shut eye.
- 10:52No good reason except two fellas with two awfully big guns, and they had
- 10:56a main right between my eyes. Counselor, Hey, Cherry is awake.
- 11:03I see, well, you got a load of those pajamas. It looks
- 11:07like you're sleeping in a rainbow. Yeah, I'm very dreams in technicolor.
- 11:11No, no, no, no, don't tell me you boys are rapping
- 11:13in costello. Huh. That's good, all right, Malon, get dressed.
- 11:18What for we're going placing on me? I say you are a friend
- 11:24of us wants to see it. You know what's the name of his friend?
- 11:26You'll find out soon enough. We're letting from my office for an appointment.
- 11:31Now, if you will be good enough to leave without slamming the door,
- 11:33I'll go back to where I was, I sip up, I wouldn't
- 11:39do that again this day. Then, don't give me any cost to animus
- 11:45pants Terry, Yeah, hmm, they could, they can stand up pressing.
- 11:50Huh. Give me a child, Cherry, Okay, yep, what's
- 11:56the idea of tearing him? We're going to blindfold You mean you woke me
- 12:01up at five o'clock to take one of those cigarette tests. Why this guy
- 12:05really cooks with gas. You'll have to forgive me girls. I'm not at
- 12:09my best at this hour. What was the big idea, Malone? Oh?
- 12:26I generally start my day was setting up exercises. That's funny. So
- 12:33there's one thing I can't stand. It's a I want to break your neck
- 12:48for this ben. I try to be nice though. That's terry. He
- 12:52just wouldn't listen to give him another drink tom on pow. This is good
- 12:58for what ails. You let me alone. I'm sorry, Malone. Huh
- 13:03believe me. I wouldn't have had this happen for the world. You who,
- 13:07dude, candle, isn't it? That's right? Well? These two
- 13:11punks working for you, Yes, but they were over zealous. Oh,
- 13:16somebody's gonna pay for this. Don't worry, they will. Oh, don't
- 13:18let up. I wanted to talk to you, Malone. You could have
- 13:22come to my arm No, no, no, not very well. The
- 13:26police are looking for me. Walter Blake was murdered last night Blake. Yes,
- 13:31I want you to represent me. Oh that's very flattering, dude,
- 13:33but I'm not into it. I didn't kill him alone, then who did
- 13:37I have no idea? Why did the police nominate you for the honor?
- 13:41I didn't wait to inquire. All right, dude, you mean you're going
- 13:46to handle my case on one condition you give yourself up. Oh no,
- 13:52and it's no dice. I wait a minute, Malone. I'll tell you
- 13:54what I'll do. Scot around for a while, I'll see what you can
- 13:58find. I'll give you Ben's phone number, call him at noon, and
- 14:03supposing I haven't let anything by then, I'll still surrender to the car.
- 14:07Well why not do it now? Because I believe in hunches, and I
- 14:11got one that says you will have this all cleaned up in no time.
- 14:16And if I don't, I've never welched yet on a bed. If you
- 14:20don't, I'll pay off just the same. Before returning to the amazing mister
- 14:35Malerne, a few words from your an answer, and now back to the
- 14:43amazing mister Malone. Yes, missus Blake, buddy want. My name is
- 15:03John J. Malone. I hate the body you now, but it's extremely
- 15:07important. I've got nothing to say. Well, I'm not a reporter,
- 15:09missus Blake, I'm an attorney. I still have nothing to say. Well,
- 15:11can't I come in for a few minutes? No, I'm going on.
- 15:15Well maybe I can give you a left. No thanks, I'll manage.
- 15:18I doubted missus Blake. You're the careless type. What do you mean
- 15:22your purse is open? Oh it's an ugly looking gun you got there?
- 15:28What did you intend doing with us? That's none of your business. It
- 15:31couldn't be. You have an idea who murdered your husband and you're going to
- 15:35take the lore into your own hand. But give me back that purse.
- 15:39Sure, as soon as I remove that I want that gun, Malone.
- 15:41First, listen to me. I want that gun. Give it back to
- 15:45you. If you answer a couple of questions, you're wasting your time.
- 15:48What do you got to lose? Sixty seconds more or less won't make any
- 15:50difference. Luck, I'm working for a man named Dude Kendall. You know
- 15:54him? Supposing I do? Was he the one who picked up your husband
- 15:58last night? No? Who was it? Man? I never saw before?
- 16:03What did he look like? Why should I tell you? Well?
- 16:04It's obvious. You don't know his name. Maybe if I had a description,
- 16:08I could help you out. Huh, Well, he would swim about
- 16:12five feet eight. He was obviously proud of his hair. He'd gets panning
- 16:17it done in place that could fit a million people. Wasn't there anything different
- 16:21about him? No, come on, missus Blake, think well. It
- 16:26seemed to me that the little finger on his right hand was steered. Sounds
- 16:30like Joe Norman Norman obviously at registers. No, No, I was thinking
- 16:33of someone else. You're lying, sweetheart. I tell you his name wasn't
- 16:37Norman. Now may I have my gun? If you don't mind, missus
- 16:40Blake. I think i'll keep it for a little while you promised me.
- 16:42I guess I can't be trusted. Oh that's all right, mister Malone.
- 16:48I can always get nothing. You'll be making a big mistake. Then I
- 16:51wouldn't hang around here if I were you. You may have to pay for
- 16:55it. Hi, I'm along, and I said, don I wish you
- 17:07would. Norman. I understand you've been looking for me ever since one this
- 17:11afternoon. What did I do to wait three and a half hours of your
- 17:15time? I wanted to talk to you about Missus Blake. Missus Blake.
- 17:18Yeah, she's awfully peved that year for walking up with her husband last night,
- 17:22and I thought I might be doing her a favor. Then you were
- 17:26the man. We stopped acting like mister district attorney. Sure I was the
- 17:29guy. I admitted I picked up Blake at eight thirty and left it a
- 17:33half hour later. You're lying, Wow, just between us boys, I
- 17:37am that she never could prove it. What are you up to, Norman?
- 17:41I just want you to realize that I can be a valuable man to
- 17:45you. You think so? I know. So you're representing dude Candle,
- 17:48aren't you. Wow, Well it'll be worth twenty five grand a dude for
- 17:52me to save his high. How do you propose to do that? Well,
- 17:56suppose I got up on the stand and told us story how I arranged
- 18:00a meeting between Walter Blake and Paul Manfreed for last night. Who Manfreed?
- 18:06Go on? Actually I didn't know what Manfred had in mind. He told
- 18:10me he wanted to see Blake on a business deal. You can't imagine how
- 18:12surprised I was when the fireworks started. You'd better come with me, No,
- 18:18at your age, Malone, I was just supposing get smart now,
- 18:21deny the whole thing. But you're willing to tell that story for twenty five
- 18:25thousand. What do you say? I have to talk to my client.
- 18:27Yeah, you talk to him alone, But tell dude, it's much more
- 18:30important for me to talk. And I'm not opening my mouth until I see
- 18:34that door and whine. Hello, let me talk to dude Candle. Please,
- 18:51you got a wrong number, mister Malone. Oh, hold on a
- 18:55second, it's the great mouthpiece. I'll take it. Hello, dude,
- 19:00Yes, I want you to meet me at my office in an hour.
- 19:03What for so I can turn you over to the police. Are you out
- 19:07of your mind? I could get it. I can play you know who
- 19:11did it? Yeah, I'll tell you when I see you. You're going
- 19:15to play ball. Well this is against my better judgment, Malone, but
- 19:18I'll be there. Yeah. Come in. Good morning, lieutenant. Oh,
- 19:33I know this was gonna be one of those days. What are you
- 19:36doing at headquarters? Malone? Well, if I'm not wanted, you're not
- 19:40all right, dude, Let's go and make sure your close. Dude.
- 19:45You got dude Candle there? Yes, Malone, I love you. Come
- 19:51in gentlemen, Ah, have a seat. Thanks and to what I owe
- 20:00this unexpected pleasure. Don't look at me, lieutenant, It was all Malone's
- 20:03I did. Wow, thank you, mister Malone. That's all I brought
- 20:07to my client. And I are always happy to cooperate with the police.
- 20:11So you're representing him. That's right, as I when five o'clock this morning,
- 20:15didn't you know we were looking for it? Don't blame Malone, lieutenant.
- 20:18He wanted me to give myself up then, but I couldn't see it.
- 20:21And what made you change your mind? He claims he knows who gunned
- 20:25Walter Blake last night. Yeah, sout away, you mean Kendall here,
- 20:29That's exactly who I mean. You're crazy, lieutenant. That was the work
- 20:33of Paul Manfred. Mister Manfred. Yes, if you pick up Joe Norman,
- 20:38you can swept the whole story out of him. I got a suspicion
- 20:41that Manfred paid Norman to lead Blake into a trap and Manfred killed him.
- 20:45Yeah, why for the same motive you're ascribing to my client. Manfred was
- 20:51one of the three biggies in this town. If he killed Blake and hung
- 20:55it on dude's door. That would make him number one. He's probably left
- 21:00leave right now. I doubt it, mylon. Well, why don't you
- 21:03pick him up? We have What did he have to say for himself?
- 21:06Huh nothing. If you give me five minutes alone with him, Lieutenant,
- 21:08I can guarantee you results. That's just the trouble, dude. I think
- 21:12you already had your five minutes alone with him. All right, Lieutenant,
- 21:15let's have it. Manfred's dead alone there, Yeah, d ea, d
- 21:22as in murdered and you think, dude, I think Doud killed them both.
- 21:29That's why I'm so grateful to you for bringing him right to my door.
- 21:32I don't see how I could have managed without you. That's malone for
- 21:38you the helpful time. How many other lawyers would do for their clients what
- 21:41I did. Not only did I deliver mine to the police, but I
- 21:45even strapped him into the chair, And while Lieutenant Brooks beamed on me as
- 21:48though I was his favorite child, the dude got out of his chair and
- 21:52started for me, and the light in his eyes wasn't gratitude. I'll pitch
- 21:56you for the s Malone. I'll fix you for the last thing I know.
- 21:59I'll take it easy. You don't believe me. I had no idea.
- 22:00You had no idea, you dirty double crash to go on to lieutenant,
- 22:04tell him I knew nothing about Manfred's murder when I brought him down here.
- 22:08You think i'd believe him? I know how close you two are.
- 22:11Don't talk like a chump, Lieutenant. What makes you think, dude,
- 22:15he killed Manfred? The same kind of logic that tells me to kill Blake.
- 22:21And suppose I could prove he didn't kill Blake? How I couldn't have.
- 22:23I wasn't even in town all night. That's a lie. One of
- 22:26my men saw at the club. Not he went around eight o'clock. How
- 22:30does he know it was? Dude? That was clothes he wears give him
- 22:33away? He was a symphony and brown. They tell me, were you
- 22:37a ninety one dude? Well? Yes, but I went straight home from
- 22:40there. Yeah, does this belong to you? Where'd you got that glove?
- 22:47Then it is yours? Well, I don't try to kid us.
- 22:49We got the man who made it. Where did you find a lieutenant about
- 22:52eight feet away from Waller Blake's body? Why it's a frame? Made me
- 22:56laugh? I prove it, you clean one of you. So I'm dressed
- 23:00to kill last night, dressed to kill his right, and he was wearing
- 23:03brown so a fashion plate like the dude here would never wear gray gloves with
- 23:08a brown outfit. That's right, Yeah, crazy him alone? You expect
- 23:11to secure an acquittal on such flimsy evidence? Why not? You're using the
- 23:15same evidence to convict him. Oh that's different anyway. Why couldn't he wear
- 23:19gray gloves with a brown outfit? Why you can't have it both ways,
- 23:23lieutenant? If your man spot a dude because of the outfit he was wearing,
- 23:27you can't, in the next breath argue He's clothes don't mean anything.
- 23:32Oh came alone? Stop selling up by it? You got anything else to
- 23:36pedal? Well, I'd like to touch you on a shabby piece of merchandise
- 23:41named Joe Norman. Do you think he killed Manfred? Oh? I leave
- 23:45that to you. All I know is that Norman offered to sell Manfred down
- 23:48the river when he talked to me a couple of hours ago. And what's
- 23:52that supposed to mean? Either Norman is as brave as a lion, or
- 23:56he knew Manfred was in no position to hurt him. I'll let you take
- 24:00your choice. Yeah, good evening, mister Norman. Don't tell me I
- 24:21changed that much in twenty four hours. Oh sure, you're missus blake to
- 24:26come in. Thank you. You know, a girl like you shouldn't wear
- 24:30a blacket. Don't do a thing for you. I believe I had you
- 24:33to thank for that. I don't follow you. Honey. You let my
- 24:37husband into a crap last night. Your nuts. You'll maybe right, mister
- 24:41Norman. I won't argue the point. No, put that gun away,
- 24:45baby, You don't know how easy those things go on. Hey, what
- 24:52goes on here? Hey? When you look at that, it's Joe Norman
- 24:53isn't then? Yeah, get out of the way, dude. You better
- 24:56let me have that gun, missus blakeer, I won't need it anymore,
- 25:00all right, Norman, get up? What? Yeah, she's a lousy
- 25:03shot. I'll have to take it out of the pistol range andcy she gets
- 25:06some practice. Come on, Norman, quick, give me back that gun.
- 25:11Whoa sweetheart? We only allow one chance to a customer and my next
- 25:17take it easy to the law gets first cracked? All right, Norman?
- 25:21Where were you at four thirty this aftern when Manfred got himself bumped. I
- 25:25don't remember. Oh that's good, that's very good. Yeah, well where
- 25:29were you, missus Blake? Well you're not penning this on me. She
- 25:33had the best motive in the world to kill Manfred. Why he murdered her
- 25:36husband? And how would you know that? I was there, asked Malone.
- 25:40I told him how it happened. I thought it was with a business
- 25:41dude. I'll bet you gotta believe me, Lieutenant, I didn't even know
- 25:45Manfred was dead. Didn't you tell me you'd be willing to testify against him?
- 25:49Sure? I wasn't worried. I knew they'd get a conviction and put
- 25:52him away. But you don't remember what you were doing when Manfred was killed.
- 25:56Well, give me a little time think, or someone throw that question
- 26:03you, I'd answer, I was with Malone, that is O. Wait,
- 26:04I got it. Yeah, I was in Charlie. You can ask
- 26:07Jane Rogers he was with me. You're lying, Norman, you couldn't have
- 26:11been. Can you approve that Malone positively? And he killed Manfrey? Oh?
- 26:15I didn't say that. I just said he wasn't a Charlie's As far
- 26:19as mister Manfred's murder is concerned. We've got dude to thank for that.
- 26:23What are you babbling on? And there's no reason to be angry. Dude,
- 26:27A close conscious boy like you love it at Sing Sing Waiting. You
- 26:30see the styles they're showing, strike hands with a slip down the side.
- 26:36They tell me. The affect you get is positively electrifying. Hey alone,
- 26:51tell me something, anything, Lieutenant. Well, I can see why dude
- 26:56knocked off Manfred. That made him the number one point in tom. He
- 27:00figured it was safe enough when I phoned and told him I could clear him
- 27:03of Blake's murder. That gave him the green light. Yeah, and he
- 27:06almost made it. He figured when we found he wasn't guilty of Blake's murder,
- 27:10we'd also believe he menicent of Manfred's because both of them seemed tied up.
- 27:14And what convinced you otherwise Norman's alibi? But you said he was lying.
- 27:18You claim Norman wasn't that, Charlie. No, he wasn't. He
- 27:22was at the Hawk Club with me. What sure? He was so rattled
- 27:26he forgot it. And if Norman was with you, then dude couldn't possibly
- 27:30be well, aren't you? It certainly will, Lieutenant well, what are
- 27:36you so down on them? Out the box? You did all right?
- 27:38Did I? I wish you'd show me where First of all, I find
- 27:42my own client guilty, and if that's not enough, I wind up across
- 27:45the table looking at you. And what's wrong with that? Ah? The
- 27:48same thing that's wrong with living at the YMCA. What no girls? Good
- 27:53night, lieutenant, and now once again back to the Amazing mister Malone.
- 28:21Pick me up at my office of this time next week and I'll unfold another
- 28:25of my grizzly stories to then good night. The Amazing Mister Malone is a
- 28:37Grace Gipton Radio production starring John Fall as John J. Malone and directed by
- 28:41Lawrence H. Cecil. Welcome back. Well. I warned about the violent
- 28:57parts of the Zampa set, and this was one where I think some of
- 29:00it was just gratuitous in terms of actual plant though this is one we've heard
- 29:08before, with the twist of it turning out that the client, initially innocent
- 29:15of the murdering question, commits another murder just because they can. The time
- 29:22of twist is clever once repeated doesn't work as well. I should say that
- 29:29the content issues on the show are not the fault of the Australians. These
- 29:33were actually ABC scripts appeared in the United States. They were just reenacting them.
- 29:41Next week is actually our last week of this series, and then coming
- 29:45in two weeks will be Mister Chameleon. But I'll do it for today.
